After receiving The Newsy Neighbour Best in Business Award for Best Bakery in 2016, I spoke with The Newsy Neighbour staff to thank them for what they did for my small business – creating local awareness and increased traffic. It still sounds rehearsed, and I wish people could hear what I say about it – the emotion [ just] comes out. [It] was a heartfelt thank you because you had no idea what you did for me as a small business. It meant so much to me that so many people came in to check out My Bakery Shop and then vote for us! ~ My Bakery Shop, Langdon

We Offer...

Representing and accessing over 30 of the worlds leading insurers

This June, we’re focused on one thing, and one thing only: the 4th Annual Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival! This yearly event is one we look forward to every summer, for a number of reasons. First off, it’s just plain fun. There’s nothing like spending a beautiful Saturday in June out on the town enjoying the very best that our communities have to offer. Plus, nothing makes you feel like a rock star quite like commandeering two downtown streets AND the adjacent public park to host one of the biggest, most exciting festivals of the year. More than that, though, we love the Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival because of both what it means, and the spirit that’s behind this annual event. Here at The Newsy Neighbour, we’ve always worked to put together a magazine that builds community by shining a spotlight on local businesses and bringing people together as neighbours. The annual Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival is this mandate – our driving philosophy – made manifest. Seeing so many amazing business owners, entrepreneurs, community members, artists, musicians, and families come together each June simply to enjoy each other’s company and celebrate summer on the Prairies is an amazing experience, and one we hope you’ll join us for.

So, come out to Strathmore on Saturday, June 16th, and experience the Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival firsthand. If you’ve been to one of these events in the past, expect everything to be that much bigger and better for our fourth year at the helm of this amazing celebration – and if you’ve never experienced a Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival, come prepared with a friendly smile and a warm handshake, and we bet you’ll leave having made a new friend or two in the community. There’s nothing quite like the Annual Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival – we hope to see you there!

Many people are fearful, anxious or phobic about something – a dark room, a furry cat, being on top of a tall building, or being in a small, cramped room. These fears or phobias may be exaggerated or irrational, yet they cause so much distraction and distress.

In the long list of fears known to man, perhaps one of the most difficult to bear is the condition called social anxiety disorder. This disorder refers to the constant fear of being criticized by other people. People who have this problem are so self-conscious to the point that they feel that everyone around them is looking at them. In the process, socially anxious people become afraid of the world around them. According to National Institute of Mental Health, “...social phobia is characterized by overwhelming anxiety in everyday social situations. It can be any type of situation---such as fear of speaking in formal or informal situations.” Anxiety in social situations is not felt by shy, insecure people alone. Famous people like the singer Donny Osmond (the brother of Marie Osmond) also had social anxiety. In a very intimate interview, Donny Osmond revealed that, for years, he struggled with stage freight and would experience anxiety panic attacks right before a public performance. Another famous person diagnosed with social anxiety disorder is singer-actress Barbara Streisand, who, in 1967, became so anxious that she forgot the lyrics of song in front of a large crowd. She was so embarrassed that she stayed away from performing in public for a long time after that moment of “song amnesia.” The great actor Laurence Olivier, who stunned audiences with his theatrical genius, also struggled with social phobia for five years just when he was at the peak of his career. Social anxiety disorder is not so easy to spot in a person. A person with so much insecurity and anxiety in being in the middle of a social occasion can still hide his predicament. Even with all the anxiety, that person can still act witty and gregarious. But there are some people who literally freeze whenever they face a crowd or even a small number of people. Their excessive self-consciousness somehow paralyzes them, making them unable to function well in social circles. At first glance, people with social anxiety disorder may exhibit chronic fear, sweating, trembling, stammering, and blushing whenever they stand in front of people. They are also easily embarrassed or humiliated by even the slightest hint of being at the center of attention. Social phobia affects more than five million Americans and is now the third most common disorder after depression and alcoholism. It affects all gender and ages, but usually starts in childhood or early adolescence. It is often accompanied by depression and some have fallen into the trap of substance abuse in the hope that drugs would help them cope with their anxieties. They feel distress whenever they are met with any social situation. One of the most common treatments for social anxiety disorder is called cognitive-behavioural therapy. Medication, such as antidepressant prescriptions, are used in conjunction with the said therapy. Social anxiety, as well as other forms of anxiety, can be successfully treated today if a patient works with a qualified therapist or doctor. A physician can determine whether the symptoms that alarm you are due to anxiety disorder, or if these are symptoms of another medical condition. As they say, there is nothing to fear but fear itself. Commitment and determination to face one's fears will surely lead to freedom, confidence, and a better appreciation for people and life itself. One of the most important puzzle pieces when putting together the festival each year is our community of movers, shakers, and business owners. As entrepreneurs ourselves, it makes our hearts swell with pride every time we see 2nd and 3rd Avenues lined up and down with our best and brightest local businesses. The Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival offers the unique opportunity for business owners to come together in the spirit of community and share their talents, services, and products with our prairie “neighbourhood” at large. Everyone from the biggest retailers to the smallest vendors and service providers comes out to show us what they’ve got, and the feedback we’ve received over the years has been incredible. For our society of local entrepreneurs, the Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival is an annual highlight, and accounts for much of the growth and networking that many of our independent small businesses see throughout the year. Take advantage of having all these incredible businesses at your fingertips and come out and support them!

The 4th Annual Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival

Kids: Come Out and Play!

Getting to Know the Festival This summer marks the fourth time that The Newsy Neighbour will be taking over downtown Strathmore to host the annual Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival! Over the past several years, we’ve gotten pretty good at bringing the party, and have taken pride in creating an event that has something for everyone. If you’ve yet to attend the Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival, we strongly encourage you to make your way to central Strathmore and be a part of things on Saturday, June 16. No matter your age or walk of life, we’re proud to welcome you out to the festival to explore everything Strathmore and our communities have to offer, and to get to know your neighbours! Still not convinced? Read on, and learn a little bit more about what we’ve got in store this year.

Business Owners get to Show Us Their Stuff!

Oftentimes, with locally-based festivals like these, there’s not a lot for kids to do. Sure, there might be the odd beanbag toss or hotdog stand, but generally, these sorts of community events often revolve around a cooler full of beer, a bit of fundraising, and neighbourhood gossip. Boooooooring. Here at The Newsy Neighbour, we understand the importance of family, with many of us currently raising children of our own. That’s why we always make sure the Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival is chock-full of fun activities that your kids will actually enjoy checking out! We don’t want to spoil everything that’ll be taking place this year, but suffice it to say that it’ll be bigger and better than last year, which featured such kid-friendly classics as face painting, bouncy castles, monster bubbles, sidewalk chalk challenges, box forts, delicious treats and goodies, and much, much more. So, cancel that sitter and bring the whole family out to the Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival – we guarantee that your kids will love it!

The Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival has something for everyone, but at its core, it’s about bringing people together to relax, unwind, and let their guard down long enough to connect with one another and get to know each other just a little bit better. To make that happen, we’re swinging for the fences this year. We’ll be taking over Kinsmen Park once again to bring you a huge, outdoor beer garden that provides the perfect place to kick back, crack open a cold one, and start a conversation with someone new. Our allday-long music event will also be returning this year, keeping the festival bumping late into the evening. Finally, some of the tastiest, most delicious food on four wheels can be found at our food truck gathering, also making a comeback after a triumphant debut last year. Whether you’re looking for good times, good eats, or good company, we’ve got you covered at the Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival!

The 4th Annual GTKYNF Saturday, June 16th, 2018

Four years ago in June, we had the crazy idea of holding an event meant to bring people together for a day to celebrate summer, local business, and community. If you know us, you’re aware that we don’t do anything by half-measures here at The Newsy Neighbour, which is why we weren’t content to simply set up some tables at the local community hall and invite a few people down for lemonade and a beanbag toss. Instead, we took to the

streets of Strathmore, shutting down 2nd and 3rd Avenues to host the very first Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival! This was one of the proudest accomplishments we’d achieved up to this point with The Newsy Neighbour, but we weren’t about to stop there: we’ve held two more Annual Get to Know Your Neighbour Festivals since that first one in 2015 – each bigger, more exciting, and more successful than the last – and we’re gearing up to host a fourth festival this summer! Come out to Strathmore on Saturday, June 16th to experience all sorts of summery fun, and join us in celebrating the 4th Annual Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival! We’re once again taking over 2nd and 3rd Avenues of downtown Strathmore to bring people together to celebrate the return of summer, warm weather, and good times to the Prairies. We designed the festival so that there’s truly something for everyone, so that no matter who you are, you’ll be able to come out and have a good time! The main focus of the event can be found in downtown Strathmore. Here, the streets will be lined with booths from all the best local businesses our communities have to offer. Don’t think of it as just a big outdoor mall, though. While there’s plenty of shopping to be done and innovative services to check out, these local entrepreneurs do their part in making the festival an event to remember. In the past, local landscaping companies have hosted Frolf tournaments, folks in the food industry have brought mountains of tasty treats for festival-goers to try out and sample, and realtors have made their mark by setting up an enormous, inflatable bouncy castle for kids to jump around in and burn off all that sugar! Speaking of the kids, there’s plenty to keep them entertained, as well. The entire point of the day is to bring people and community members together, so the last thing we wanted to do was create an “adults-only” event by putting together a festival that would be boring for anyone under the age of 18. With that in mind, you can bring the whole family out for fun and good times on

June 16th! Past festivals have seen all sorts of kid-friendly fun including face painting, sidewalk chalk art displays, box cities, bubble-blowing contests, the aforementioned bouncy castle (always a huge hit!), mascots, pedal car tours, and much more. There’s no shortage of family-oriented happenings at the Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival, so be sure to slather some sunscreen on those little noggins and bring the kids out for a day of fun in the sun! Looking for something that’s a bit less bouncy-castle and a bit more of a party? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered there, too. We’ll be commandeering Kinsmen Park for the second year in a row to bring you the return of Sessions in the Park, an outdoor music festival that got its start in 2017 with the goal of showcasing the best and brightest local musical talent our communities have to offer. And if you thought our lineup last year was a good time, we can’t wait for you to experience the incredible breadth of musical talent that will be taking the stage this go-around! High Steppin’ Daddy will be headlining a truly massive list of all the heaviest-hitting local acts around, and we’ve once again packed the park full of food trucks so that you’ll be able to enjoy delicious, tasty snacks all day long without missing a single note, riff, or twang. So, what are you waiting for? Mark June 16th off your calendar and make plans to spend the day out in Strathmore enjoying the sun, grooving to some great local tunes, and joining your fellow community members for fun and good times. Come out to the 4th Annual Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival, and see what all the buzz is about! ~ Kyle Penn

We’re doing something a bit unorthodox with our monthly local music spotlight this go-around, and are featuring a band we’ve showcased in this space once before: High Steppin’ Daddy.

Wait, wait, wait!

e 4 Av

What sort of a show are you in for? Well, High Steppin’ Daddy focuses primarily on the golden age of country (think Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, and their ilk), while bringing their own spin and character to the sounds and songs that people have grown to love. “We do some newer stuff, and classic rock, and all kinds of stuff – we’re all over the map,” Baker explained. “But the catalyst

“For me, when I can sing a harmony with another person,” Baker told me during an interview I had with him, “like, a three-part harmony, or something like that – that’s something that I really get a reward out of. It feels good. That, and the sharing of music. As long as the song is there, and we’re all sharing that song together, that’s the cool part for me.” It’s this positive emotion and energy that makes High Steppin’ Daddy stand out as truly exceptional musicians and entertainers. This is a band that loves nothing more than taking to the stage and simply sharing their love of music and good times with the audience. That passion has driven them to become one of the most capable, tightly-knit local acts around, and one which we are proud to have headlining our annual Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival.

Before you flip the page, know that this isn’t just a “rerun” article, but instead, offers a chance for The Newsy Neighbour community to re-familiarize itself with this raucous, talented quartet ahead of one of the most exciting local events of the year: the 4th Annual Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival. That’s right, we booked Glenn Baker and High Steppin’ Daddy to head up our Sessions in the Park live music festival this year, so if you weren’t planning on coming out to party Saturday, June 16th, we bet you are now! And if we still haven’t sold you, read on to learn a bit more about why High Steppin’ Daddy taking the stage at Kinsmen Park this month is such a big deal.

available for that show?’” Baker elucidated. “Our members have young families, jobs…so there’s probably a roster of more than five, less than ten players who can sit in at any given point. It also gives us the freedom to call different people, depending on what the gig is. If it’s a straight-ahead country gig, I always like to bring in a pedal steel guitar. I’m a keyboardist, but I’ll play bass, or I’ll play guitar, depending on who’s available.” This flexibility and fluidity not only means that High Steppin’ Daddy gets to book more shows more often (which translates into a tighter, more enjoyable set each time around for the audience), but the nature of having a standing roster of talented musicians like this also goes a long way towards making each of their shows that much more enjoyable for their audiences. Even if you’ve seen High Steppin’ Daddy before, every performance is unique, depending on who’s present, which instruments they’re playing, and what the on-stage dynamic moulds itself into on that particular evening. Each roster is built around the engagement at hand, meaning you can expect a seriously energetic and exciting performance on the evening of June 16, because High Steppin’ Daddy will undoubtedly come prepared to bring the party to our annual outdoor event!

(403) 901-1155 503 AB-1, Strathmore, AB of High Steppin’ Daddy is that particular, country style of music. For me, specifically, I find that era of music to be one in which artists honed their craft, and actually sang the notes, and played the riffs…it was real music.” Don’t expect the show to be one full of classic country crooning, though. Instead, we’d advise you to look forward to a performance closer to something in the “barn burner” category, full of energy, fun, and good times. After all, High Steppin’ Daddy’s whole mantra revolves around their philosophy of playing Real Music for Real People. This attitude is one that holds true to the gig-style nature of the band, as their efforts tend to fall in line with a group that’s more collaborative than it is exclusive. “Nowadays, basically, when I book a gig, I’ll say, ‘Who’s around? Who’s

While High Steppin’ Daddy might be playing for Real People, they themselves are some of the most unreal, talented musicians around. Having performed together for more than half a decade at huge gigs like the Big Valley Jamboree, Craven Country Jamboree, the Grey Cup Festival, Carnaval de Québec, and more, High Steppin’ Daddy have played in nearly every province in Canada. In addition, multiple members of the band have been nominated on numerous occasions for prestigious CCMA awards. This is a group with gobs of talent and loads of character to boot, and we’re proud to have them onstage at the Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival. Some of the more regular players include Baker himself, as well as Owen Ehgoetz, Matt Beatty, Mitch Jay, and Kent Macrae – but, as I’ve mentioned, these members are regularly joined or filled in for by other incredibly talented individuals, so it will be a bit of a surprise on June 16th seeing who steps on stage. Whatever players pick up their instruments that night, though, we can count on it being a fun-filled, musically-charged evening to remember! So, come out to the 4th Annual Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival on Saturday, June 16th, and experience all the country-fueled fun that High Steppin’ Daddy can muster. We’re looking forward to a great show and an incredible day connecting with community members from all over southern Alberta – hope to see you there! ~ Kyle Penn

Husband banned from Wal-Mart

He asked; She said “yes”; We shouted “FINALLY”!!!

After I retired, my wife insisted that I accompany her on her trips to Wal-Mart. Unfortunately, like most men, I found shopping boring and preferred to get in and get out. Equally unfortunate, my wife is like most women - she loves to browse. Yesterday my dear wife received the following letter from our local Wal-Mart. Dear Mrs. Samsel,

Andy and Myrna Galay of Strathmore, AB are excited to announce the engagement of their son, Travis Galay to Kaycee Hermanson Daughter of Alvin and Alanna Hermanson of Standard, AB Wedding will take place August 18, 2018 in Hussar, AB

Over the past six months, your husband has caused quite a commotion in our store. We cannot tolerate this behaviour and have been forced to ban both of you from the store. Our complaints against your husband, Mr. Samsel, are listed below and are documented by our video surveillance cameras. 1. June 15: Took 24 boxes of condoms and randomly put them in other people's carts when they weren't looking. 2. July 2: Set all the alarm clocks in the housewares department to go off at 5-minute intervals. 3. July 7: He made a trail of tomato juice on the floor leading to the women's restroom. 4. July 19: Walked up to an employee and told her in an official voice, 'Code 3 in Housewares. Get on it right away'. This caused the employee to leave her assigned station and receive a reprimand from her Supervisor that in turn resulted with a union grievance, causing management to lose time and costing the company money. 5. August 4: Went to the Service Desk and tried to put a bag of M&Ms on layaway. 6. August 14: Moved a 'CAUTION - WET FLOOR' sign to a carpeted area. 7. August 15: Set up a tent in the camping department and told the children shoppers he would invite them in if they would bring pillows and blankets from the bedding department to which twenty children obliged. 8. August 23: When a clerk asked if they could help him, he began crying and screamed, 'Why can't you people just leave me alone?' EMTs were called. 9. September 4: Looked right into the security camera and used it as a mirror while he picked his nose. 10. September 10: While handling guns in the hunting department, he asked the clerk where the antidepressants were. 11. October 3: Darted around the store suspiciously while loudly humming the 'Mission Impossible' theme. 12. October 6: In the auto department, he practiced his 'Madonna look' by using different sizes of funnels. 13. October 18: Hid in a clothing rack and when people browsed through, yelled 'PICK ME! PICK ME!' 14. October 21: When an announcement came over the loud speaker, he assumed a fetal position and screamed 'OH NO! IT'S THOSE VOICES AGAIN!' And last, but not least: 15. October 23: Went into a fitting room, shut the door, waited awhile, and then yelled very loudly, 'Hey! There's no toilet paper in here.' One of the clerks passed out.

ASK THE VET Q: We are planning to vacation in the United States, what do I need to travel with my pet? A: Excellent question! With spring FINALLY upon us, and summer just around the corner, many of our clients are making plans to travel to the USA with their pets. Whether you plan to travel by plane, train or automobile, it is important to speak to your veterinarian prior to leaving to cover a number of important points, including:

Your pet will always be treated like a part of our family at the Animal Care Centre of Strathmore We have recommendations, training information, and handouts that will help you and your pet. We provide ultimate care in a safe, comfortable environment; catered to your pet’s specific needs including: › Annual Health Examinations › Vaccination Appointments › Behavior Consultations › Isolation ward › Breeder puppy vaccinations › Travel documents › Pediatric patient exams › Geriatric patient exams › Insurance › Referrals

403.901.1800 clinic & emergency | info@animalcarecentre.ca | animalcarecentre.ca We are located north of the Trans Canada Hwy on RR 254, 2 km West of Strathmore.

• Vaccinated and Healthy – Specifically, to enter the United States, dogs and cats must be immunized against Rabies and travel with a valid Rabies vaccination certificate. The certificate must include: name + address of owner; identifying information for the dog (eg. breed, age, colour); date of rabies vaccination, vaccine product information, date the vaccination expires, and the signature of the licensed veterinarian that administered the vaccination. These requirements apply to ALL dogs and cats, including service animals and puppies/kittens. Puppies and kittens must not be vaccinated against Rabies before they’re 12 weeks old. The USA requires a mandatory 30-day waiting period following first Rabies vaccination prior to granting entry into the country. Therefore, the youngest pet that can be imported into the United States is 4 months old. Pets may be denied entry if they appear ill with a communicable disease or if proof of a valid Rabies vaccination is not provided. Exam for flying – certain airlines may require a “Fit to Fly” certificate. This requires a veterinarian to examine your pet within a specific period of time prior to flying. Please check with your airline well in advance of travel to find out if a certificate is required for your pet so we can best accommodate an appointment within the stipulated timeframe. This is not required for travel across the border unless you are flying with your pet. • Parasite prevention – Depending on your intended destination, your veterinarian will discuss Heartworm, Tick and Flea prevention with you. Ticks and Fleas are present within Alberta and may already be part of your pet’s seasonal prevention program. If not, there are a multitude of recommended products that your veterinarian can advise based on your pet’s needs and exposure level. It’s worth mentioning that these parasites can carry secondary pathogens, such as Lyme disease, carried by certain breeds of ticks. The best prevention against the bacteria that causes Lyme disease (Borrelia burgdorferi) is to prevent your pets from being exposed to ticks that transmit the bacteria with oral or topical anti-parasitic medications. As for Heartworm, luckily, we do not have this parasite in Alberta to date. It is a roundworm that can be trans-

mitted to your dog by mosquito species that live in very warm environments. This parasite can be fatal to your pet, making the inexpensive and easy prevention a no-brainer when traveling to endemic areas! • Travel anxiety – many pets suffer from travel anxiety and motion sickness. This can turn an otherwise enjoyable road trip into unnecessary torture for you and your pet. Your veterinarian can suggest the most appropriate therapy for your individual pet, including: environmental modification (eg. Adaptil or Feliway sprays to calm your pet), pre-travel conditioning (e.g., getting your pet used to a safe travel crate and practicing car rides) or as a last resort, oral medication. Wishing you all a safe and happy summer – whether you are planning a ‘staycation’ or travels to American destinations! Please don’t hesitate to contact your Veterinarian with any further questions about travel with your pet. Kate Mueller, DVM Animal Care Centre of Strathmore

403.934.3693 oxbowcountrygc.ca be worth trying, just to see if you are comfortable with it. The wind also plays a huge role in deciding with what club and with what technique you will hit your shot. If the wind it coming straight at you, you will have a different technique than if it was at your back. When the wind is coming from behind you, you will want to make a completely normal swing. However, you will have to pick a more lofted club. Grip the club with the ball positioned a little bit ahead of the center than regular. Use a mid-iron, with one of the longer lengths that are available in your club bag. If the wind is coming straight at you from the front, you will have to use a stronger club and hit the ball hard enough to make up for the wind that is coming at you. Choosing the right club in a given situation will not necessarily make your shot perfect. You will have to adjust your technique as well, and make sure that your stroke is clean and accurate. This, combined with the right club, will eventually make for the perfect shot, but it may take years and years of golf practice. Both the club choice and the technique take a long time to master, so besides reading information about them you should also go out and practice plenty so that you can really get it down. This will help better than any other guide that you could possibly find. If you don’t have constant access to a golf course, it may be a good idea to buy a membership or even find some sort of alternative way to practice. No matter what you do, you have to remember that golf is a game of patience. If you play every day and you see absolutely no improvement in your technique, you should not worry. Just do everything you can to find out more about what to do in certain situations, and you will find that this is the best way that you can see noticeable results in your abilities. Being good at golf is a great way to impress people and being good at golf takes nothing more than time and experience.

When playing golf, the most important part of the game is to pick the golf club that will work well for the particular situation that you are in.

Everything about the course will play a role in deciding what club you remove from your bag, and therefore it is important to know how all of these different factors work together. If you are looking to become more serious about your golf game, or you even want to become a professional, then it is a good idea to learn about these things. Here I will outline some of these main things to look for. You will get a very basic idea of how to choose a club, and hopefully you will practice enough to become even more knowledgeable at choosing them. When you first start out, you usually won’t have much to worry about in the way of obstacles and bends in the course, so you can stick with the larger clubs and hit the ball as far as you can. However, you want to make sure that you are comfortable hitting the ball as hard and as far as you can without making it go completely off its desired path. Many golfers choose to take a step up with the club, then take a lower grip and hit the shot as hard as they can. Having the lower grip will allow for more control over the swing and reduce the chance of a mistake, while increasing the distance that your ball flies. This strategy may not work for you, but enough golfers use it that it might

You see, my name is Gaylene and I have an insatiable weakness when it comes to greenhouses.

Wendy Zak

Some wives make their husbands nervous when near a shoe store. My husband breaks out into a cold sweat every time we enter the parking lot of a greenhouse. It isn’t that he has allergies and is anxious about the impending attack of the sneezes. He doesn’t have a phobia of perennials. No, he has a wife that can do some serious succulent shopping.

Owner

In all fairness, it isn’t my fault. No, this has been handed down for at least two generations. I remember my Grandma Taylor’s veggie garden being splattered with reds, yellows and purples. Poppies sprouted between the peas and potatoes. Bumble bees buzzed by bachelor buttons. Cone flowers danced among the carrot tops. It was a great garden, nothing grew in straight rows. It was laisse-fair gardening at its very best. Now my Mom’s garden when I was kid – well number one, it was larger than the local Hutterites’... it was huge. Number two, it was planned and plotted out with the meticulousness of a military operation. I kid you not, I vividly remember my Dad standing with a yard stick measuring the distance between each hill of potatoes my brothers and I had to plant and we hoed a heck of lot of hills of spuds. If a satellite had happened to float past the farm yard right after germination I kid you not, images would have been sent to NASA who would then have shown up to the farm in a convey of black SUV’s to offer my Mom a job coordinated the next shuttle launch. It was that precise. The main row between the root vegetables and the vines was exactly one rototiller width wide and was bordered year after year after year by coleus that had been started in our own greenhouse. I can recreate that garden in my sleep. Some kids got grounded when they got into trouble – I got weed patrol. My fingers from May to September looked like Shrek’s! Now I have a very modest veggie garden. It consists of a few raised beds that supply us with all the fixings for salads, some squash and a few hills of potatoes – that have not been measured out. My love of gardening shows up in the flower beds. I have converted half of the front lawn into a xeriscape of perennials and fruiting shrubs. My backyard is filled with peonies, lilies, irises, delphiniums, lupins, spirea and veronicas. It is so full that I had trouble finding space to plant a dozen gladiolus bulbs. I managed to squeeze them in between the fence and the pear trees. Upon seeing my struggles finding room for my new baby bulbs, Les had the nerve to ask why I bought them. Can you imagine? Twenty-two years of marriage and it’s like he doesn’t know me at all! Umm, they were on sale and had started to germinate so they need a home ASAP. The only thing sadder than sprouting bulbs in a bag of saw dust are the poor little perennials that sit alone on the shelves near the end of September. Like the last kid picked for the dodgeball team, you just can’t not help feeling sorry for them. I see it as part of my civic duty to buy these late summer bloomers and give them a loving home. It keeps them out of the landfill, provides nourishing nectar for the bees, and makes my little plot of earth just a little bit more beautiful. If it just happens to cost a dollar or two hundred every season, then so be it. After all, what’s the point of working hard if we don’t stop to smell buy the flowers? So, feel free to wander by the front yard and sniff some salvias and while you’re there pull a weed or two. Gardening is good for the soul and I would hate to deprive anyone of the peace that comes from pulling weeds. ~ Gaylene

time to time? Swedish massage is a gentle treatment involving soft, long, kneading strokes as well as a light rhythmic, tapping stroke mainly focused on the top layers of the muscles, combining with the movements of the joints, relieving muscle tension, stiffness, and even pain and resulting in a relaxing and energizing massage. You can integrate essential oils for a Raindrop Therapy massage, which boosts your immune systems both antiviral, and antibacterial, plus helps you relax to the point where you sleep deeper and longer. Hot Stone massage can also be very relaxing and soothing; using warmed stones and placing these on certain acupressure points and then massaging those areas with gentle pressure, releases stiffness, tension and pain, leaving you in a relaxed state! There is another massage that can be put into the relaxation group and that is Chair Massage. It is done with you sitting totally clothed in a special designed chair. Most sessions are only 15 – 20 minutes and have the same benefits as a regular massage, but focus on the neck, shoulders, back, arms and hands; leaving you so calm the rest of the day is a pleasure!

- Next, we have massages that go much deeper with therapeutic and neuromuscular work on trigger points, acupressure points, and the fascia (connective tissue) of the muscle systems. These treatments should only be administered by a therapist who is trained in these specific areas. Not every Massage Therapist knows all of these different types of massage, so please ask before beginning your session. Types include: Deep Tissue Massage, Neuromuscular Therapy Massage, Sports Massage, Shiatsu Massage, Thai Massage, and Reflexology Massage. Each works on different parts of the muscle, fascia, and joints to help an injured muscle heal faster and have less pain. For most of these treatments the therapist has be trained to go deeper so there will be initially a little more pain during the session. This pain will only last for a short time and should go away within minutes. Some people are more sensitive than others, but working closely with your therapist can minimize the soreness and can help them know what to do next. The benefits outweigh the discomfort by improving circulation and flexibility, relieving chronic pain patterns and help to remove energy blockages. There is overall healing for all types of physical trauma and it aids in the prevention of new injures. So gentlemen, if you suffer from back pain, headaches, poor sleep, fatigue, migraines, depression, anxiety, sore muscles, stuff joints, neck pain, high blood pressure, lower-back pain, constipation, or any injury that involves the muscles, joints, nerves, and fascia, help your body heal quicker and faster with a trained Massage Therapist to help you become a healthier and happier you! Another thing I love about my father is the priority and commitment he places on our family. I have never seen another father who is so committed to family time and to being involved in the lives of the ones he loves. Far too many fathers are consumed by work, but not my dad. Throughout my childhood, teenage years, and no into adulthood my father has been the most consistent of any parent I've seen. I appreciate that consistency so much, yet I'm not sure that I have ever expressed that to my dad. This is the year.

A third thing that I love about my father is the way he loves my mother. Everything I know about love I have learned from watching my parents love each other. I am well aware of the rare gift that is, and I cherish it closely. I want to be sure to communicate to my dad what it has meant that he has loved my mother in front of us so well for so many years.

Perhaps I feel urgent about reflecting on my father's life and impact because he is getting older and becoming more and more like an old man. I'm not sure, I just know that I feel like it is important for me at this stage of life to figure out just why I love him and then to share it with him. Being a writer, my emotions and thoughts are expressed much easier in writing than verbally, so I'm planning to make a journal of sorts about my father and to share it with him on next year's Father's Day. The very first thing that comes to mind when I think about the way I love my father is how he has always been the best teacher. He is the one that taught me how to ride my bike without training wheels and how to catch a softball in my glove. He is the one that helped me with multiplication tables when I was stuck and the one that took me out for hours of driving practice before I got my license. My father is a great teacher because he is patient, gentle and a great communicator.

I have been thinking a lot about my father. This is by no means the first time that I've ever thought about what makes my father such a special person in my life, but I have been far more intentional about reflecting on him in the past few weeks than ever before.

Periodontal Disease – Impacts Your Smile and Your Heart

Whoever would have thought that Periodontal Disease and Heart and Stroke risk would be linked together? Smoking and Heart Disease – we can see the link – but gum health and the health of body organs and systems – what’s that all about? Gum Disease and Your Body Expressions like ‘The Mouth is the Gateway to the Body’ and ‘The Mouth-Body Connection’ have been making their way through clinics, conferences and research labs for decades. But what do these expressions really mean when it comes down to the health of the mouth and impact on the body? Periodontists (specialists in treating tissue surrounding teeth) are well researched and prepped when it comes to understanding the unique connection between oral health and systemic health. Periodontal organizations such as the Canadian Academy of Periodontology and the American Academy of Periodontology have long reported on the connection between gum and oral tissue health and the increased risk of cardiovascular and respiratory disease – noting that patients who present with periodontal disease have twice the risk of having a heart attack. Why Does Periodontal Disease Impact the Health of The Body? From increasing the risk of heart disease to premature birth and low birth weight – there’s no getting around the fact that Periodontal Disease can do a real number on the body. But why – how can a disease that directly impacts oral tissues cause concern for our entire body? Bacteria, which is responsible for the destruction and inflammation of oral tissues, isn’t isolated to the mouth – but enters the blood stream and travels around the body – causing further inflammation and contributing to blood clots and fatty deposits in arteries. The more plaque build-up on teeth the greater number of bacteria present and the greater the inflammation of gum and bone. If the inflammation is not controlled, gum and bone levels recede, causing periodontal pockets where further plaque and bacteria gather, causing inflammation – and so on-and-on it goes. The Importance of Preventative Cleanings Dentists stress the importance of maintaining preventative cleanings to ensure periodontal disease is prevented or controlled if already present. Routine cleanings, along with a healthy diet, is an essential part of keeping your mouth and heart healthy. ~ Langdon Dental

We’ve already seen how Aging can lead to a reduction in some of the neu-rotransmitters that make us feel good and we’ve seen how this can lead to low mood as well as impaired cognitive function. We’ve also seen how this can be mitigated both with the right nutrient regime and with constant learn-ing and trying new things. As we’ll see, hormones also play a big role in this. But there are other factors at play here too. For example, there are the life-style factors that can lead many older people to start The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

www.strathmorefarmersmarket.ca this is described as being like the plastic tips at the end of shoelaces – designed to stop the shoelaces from fraying. What’s really going on, it that every time your cells divide and reproduce via mitosis, they end up losing a little bit of information from the ends of the DNA. Because telomeres are unneeded, they act like a ‘buffer’. They are the first things to go and it doesn’t matter because they don’t contain any information. But after a while, you’ll find your telomeres ‘run out’ and that’s when your actual DNA starts to be degraded. Guess what? Studies show that the more stressed you are, the shorter the telomeres become. And this is also true when you’re suffering from depres-sion. If you are very stressed at work, you will age faster. And if you feel lonely, isolated and frustrated in an old-people’s home, you’ll feel stressed too. The good news? As you become less stressed, you can actually end up re-storing and rejuvenating your telomeres to some extent.

How to Manage Stress

Don’t get it confused though: not all stress is bad. ‘Eustress’ is the term of-ten used to describe the good kind of stress and this is the kind of feeling you get when standing on top of a mountain about to head down on skies, or when you’re playing a computer game and you’re completely focused because you only have one life left. This is the kind of mild stress that in-creases dopamine and BDNF.

The key is to keep challenging yourself, keep subjecting yourself to new experiences and to make sure you manage the stress this brings in a healthy manner. The worst thing you can do is to sit in an old-person’s home stressing about how lonely you are, or to sit in the same office, doing the same work, every single day while being under a lot of stress. The reality is that while we can’t control our circumstances, we can control the way we react to them. When you’re lonely or bored, there are things you can do to get more meaning in your life again – even if that just means getting the internet set up or learning a new skill like painting. And if you’re stressed at work, consider quitting – after all, your health is the most im-portant thing.

Stress Management Techniques

You can also try any number of stress management techniques. Of these, the most successful and popular is probably meditation. It’s no coincidence that a lot of Buddhist monks seem to live inordinately long. To give meditation a shot, you could try downloading the popular mobile app ‘Head Space’ which will talk you through a few guided meditation ses-sions. Otherwise, you can try transcendental or mindfulness meditation on your own. The key is to calm the mind and to stop worrying about things. The big mistake we often make is to try and ‘force’ this to happen when in reality, this defies the point entirely! When you try and ‘force’ yourself to calm, you are actually anything but. Instead, you should simply sit some-where quietly, close your eyes and then see what happens. If your mind wanders, then just make a note of it and focus back on your breathing or on keeping your mind still. It takes a little practice but just 10 minutes a few times a week can start to make a major difference. Eventually, meditation will become a tool you can use to stay calm under any circumstances. Another option is to look into CBT or ‘Cognitive Behavioral Therapy’. This is a psychotherapeutic technique that teaches methods that patients can use to try and clam their thoughts and overcome a stress response. Often, it simply involves looking at your situation a little differently. For instance, ‘thought challenging’ is a type of ‘cognitive restructuring’ and this teaches you to look at the things you’re afraid of and then assess whether they’re really worth fearing or if perhaps you have blown them out of proportion. If you are someone who struggles with a lot of stress, then you might con-sider seeing a professional cognitive behavioral therapist who will teach you these tools that you can then use yourself to overcome stressful situa-tions. Chapter 4: Keeping Your Body Active and Mobile Now perhaps the most important way to protect your body and mind against Aging: working out! That’s right: body and mind. Your brain’s primary purpose is to move your body and a huge amount of your grey matter’s real estate is dedicated to exactly that job. If you want to keep learning and creating new connections in your brain, then nothing will compare to staying active and exercising. What’s more, is that exercise stimulates the release of countless necessary neurochemicals including dopamine and serotonin. It has been shown to greatly improve memory and to boost the IQ too. Meanwhile, the benefits for the body are huge. Staying active can help to improve heart health and prevent the likelihood of heart disease. It can also improve your looks, combat diabetes, prevent depression, keep your bones stronger (especially if you train outside and get lots of sun) and much more. More importantly, as we discussed in the introduction, staying active is ac-tually the best way to prevent the loss of mobility that will leave us hunched and in constant pain in old age. So the question is, how do you stay active in the right way to combat age-related health issues?

One Rule: Move!

Get up right now and stand with your feet slightly apart and toes facing for-ward. Now try to squat all the way down with your heels flat on the floor. Can’t do it? This isn’t just a problem for the older population – it’s something that 90% of guys and gals in their 20s and 30s can’t do either. But you should be able to do it. Squatting is one of the 7 primal movements – it’s a fundamental ability that we should all have. How about touching your toes? The problem is that most of us spend 8 hours a day sitting in an office in the same position. That position involves having our shoulders hunched forward, neck craned down and legs bent. This causes muscles like the quadriceps and pecs to shorten and tighten, while our hamstrings and glutes become weakened and flattened. The longer this goes on, the more serious the problem becomes.

Eventual-ly we might even develop a pelvic tilt. Is it any wonder that you can’t move at all when you’re older? So the key is not to start some ‘gentle exercise’. Rather, the key is to get really active and to push your body. It should be able to handle it but you need a trainer who can teach you to get started gently and to gradually in-crease the difficulty while keeping one eye firmly on mobility. Read books like Becoming a Supple Leopard and you’ll see that we age best when we use our body through its full range of motion and keep on doing so. Weight-lifting is actually a great choice of exercise for older individuals as it teach-es movements like the squat and the dead lift with good technique to en-sure that you have full range of motion. This is even more important if you do have a fall or accident – as this is what will very often serve as the catalyst to many more problems. If that happens, then you should see a chiropractor or physiotherapist and then follow the advice they give you to strengthen the area and prevent knock-on effects throughout your body. Of course, if you have existing complaints then you may not be up for squatting and lunging just yet. In that case, you may want to start with some gentle cardio in the meantime which will help to provide those afore-mentioned health and brain benefits in the short term. Good options include most low-impact forms of exercise, such as swimming, walking (or power walking), the recumbent bike and others that don’t involve hitting anything with force. Just make sure that the goal is always to work your way up to-ward more complex moves.

Chapter 5: Preventing Your Age From Showing Up on Your Face

Our skin is one of the most obvious indicators of our age and if you ask someone to predict how old you are it’s your skin that they’ll look to to make their estimate. For this reason, anti-aging skin care is one of the sur-est ways to look younger and healthier to make sure that there are no awkward moments when someone mistakes your sister for your daughter. Using the correct techniques, it’s possible to cut up to 25 years off your ap-pearance, maybe more and not only look better but feel better too.

Protecting Your Skin With the Right Nutrients

The first facet of anti-aging skin care is in our diet, and the more healthily we eat, the smoother and healthier our skin will be. This stands to reason when you consider that it’s our food that provides our body with the building blocks required to make look after our skin and every other tissue and muscle in the body. literally are what you eat, and if you want healthy skin you need Dr. Ashkan Hamzehi DDS • Dr. Jason Pan DDS a healthy diet. Dr. Junsoo Kim DDSabout • Dr.trying ArzytoKafrouny DDS When thinking specifically look younger, there are three main things we need in our diet – antioxidants, vitamins and fats.

Antioxidants

First of all the antioxidants, found in foods such as citrus fruits and fish, will help protect our skin cells (and every other cell) from oxidization and attack from free radicals. We’ve touched on this idea briefly already but to reiter-ate – every cell in your body is under constant attack from free radicals which damage the cell walls when they come into contact with them. Enough of these bombardments and eventually, that microscopic damage becomes macroscopic and your skin appears tired and wrinkled. Worse is that this damage can eventually penetrate through to your DNA at which point your cells will become mutated and look damaged when they divide. In the worst case scenarios, this can lead to the formation of cancerous tumors. Antioxidants manage to neutralize these free radicals so that there are less available to attack the skin. This will mean that the skin cells come under less fire and so appear healthier. At the same time this will help protect the skin and other cells against cancer by lowering the chance of the DNA behind the cell walls be-ing damaged or mutated. There are countless sources of antioxidants in your diet but the best way to make sure you’re getting plenty is just to consume a lot of fruits and vege-tables which tend to be packed with them. Antioxidants also include things like resveratrol and CoQ10. You may re-member from our section on nootropics that these enhance mitochondrial function and this makes sense, seeing as damaging oxygen is a common byproduct of the mitochondria

Vitamins meanwhile, particularly vitamin A and E, are used in rebuilding the skin and are a great way to encourage the body to heal both scars and wrinkles. These are used to help encourage the production of collagen and other important substances that give the skin its elasticity and generally, they will keep your skin looking more youthful and healthy. Again, this all comes from eating a diet high in nutrients. Fats Essential fatty acids meanwhile will provide your skin with oil to keep it sub-tle and prevent it becoming dry and flaky. Omega 3 fatty acid will act as both a source of oil for your skin and a source of antioxidants. Saturated fats in general are an important part of your diet and will help to keep your skin naturally moisturized while also encouraging the production of hormones that further help to keep your skin glowing. Fats get a lot of bad rap when it comes to your health but more recent stud-ies show that we have mistakenly made them into scapegoats. Fat does not increase LDL (bad) cholesterol, nor does it make us fat. Fat is actually an important part of our diet! Oh and eating lots of protein is also important. Protein provides the body with all the building blocks it needs to create more tissue and that includes the skin (not just muscle!).

The Best Diet for Looking and Feeling Younger

With all this in mind, what is the best diet for looking and feeling younger? Well really, there’s just one rule. That is: seek out nutrients! By extension, this also means you’re better off avoiding those sugary carbs and processed foods like chips, crisps, cake, chocolate bars, pasta and rice. These foods all spike your blood sugar and lower insulin sensitivity, thereby increasing your risk of diabetes (which you’re at increasing risk of as you get older anyway!). Meanwhile, these foods increase your caloric intake without offering any nutrients that would be able to benefit your skin, hair, teeth or nails. So why eat them? Instead, seek out fruits, vegetables, salads, meats, berries, fish, nuts and all that good stuff you would find in nature. Smoothies are great (although high in sugar). Seek out those Superfoods meanwhile! Did you know that bone broth is packed with collagen? If you’re looking for a set diet plan you can follow to make this happen, then there is no shortage of choice. The following will all help put you on the right track: The Mediterranean Diet The Paleo Diet The Slow Carb Diet And guys, don’t start this later once you start to see the signs of Aging creeping up. Start it now and you’ll be able to keep those signs at bay. Pre-vention is much better than cure!

Eat a Lot or Eat a Little?

Here’s another question: should you eat a lot, or eat a little? This is actually one of the most important questions to ask when looking younger is your aim in fact! The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

Altogether Different

On the one hand, there is a school of thought that says you should eat very little. The latter strategy is what’s called ‘Calorie Restriction’ and does ex-actly what it says on the tin. The claim here is that by restricting calories, you can actually reduce the rate of your Aging and thus stay looking younger, longer. How does this work? According to proponents, eating less means that your mitochondria work less and thus produce fewer free radicals as a result. The body is forced to rely on ketones and it becomes very energy efficient (eating a low carb diet could have a similar effect, as could intermittent fast-ing). Studies show that mice that live on very low calorie diets can extend their lifespan by as much as 30% and there are plenty of enthusiastic peo-ple online trying this strategy right now. Does it work for humans? It’s cur-rently too soon to tell. But with all that said, there are definite drawbacks to this strategy too. For one, it makes malnutrition likely. While proper calorie restriction shouldn’t lead to malnutrition, it is of course much harder to get everything your body needs while eating a very low number of calories. It’s also largely unfeasible for a lot of us and not much fun. And there’s another argument too: that actually, having a little puppy fat will help to make you look younger as you age. As we age, our skin becomes thinner and we start to carry less subcutaneous fat (fat stored beneath the skin). Thus, we start to look a lot more drawn. Compare a thin old lady to an old lady who eats a lot though and you’ll find that the latter looks young-er because their skin is smoothed out by the layer of fat beneath. Mean-while, they will usually have more color and actually be healthier. Some women claim that as they start to approach their 50s and 60s, they are forced to make a choice between ‘face’ and ‘body’. What should you do? That’s entirely your call but just make sure that what-ever method you take you are emphasizing nutrients in your diet!

Skin Care for Anti-Aging

Anti-aging skin care is also about lifestyle, and how we treat our bodies will be reflected in the appearance of our skin. While soaking up the sun will help us to look bronzed and healthy in the short run, over time it will lead to damaged skin cells which will create more wrinkles in our old age. This can lead to age spots and more problems as the UV waves of the sun damage the cell walls and cause mutations. Sun block and getting shade can help this to a great degree. Similarly, it’s important that we make sure we get lots of sleep. One of the reasons for this is that our sleep is when our body repairs damage done to our bodies throughout the day and so can rejuvenate our skin that way. One of the ways in which this works is through the release of growth hor-mone, or HGH, which is a hormone that encourages anabolism in the body making it repair wounds, rebuild muscle, replace damaged cells and en-courage growth in the muscles and bones (though the bones stop growing after puberty when the ‘growth plates’ will seal off). As well as sleep, an-other way to encourage the natural production of growth hormone (synthet-ic growth hormone is used a lot by bodybuilders and celebrities, but is un-fortunately illegal in most states and countries and very expensive in those that it is not – it also has a lot of unwanted side effects, some of which are fatal) is to exercise and to take hot showers, both of which will trigger an anabolic cycle. HGH is perhaps the closest thing there is to an elixir of youth right now, so anything you can do to stimulate it naturally should definitely be encour-aged.

Then the most obvious aspect of skin care – the use of anti-aging cream and products. These will work in multiple ways, both protecting your skin from outside attack from UV rays and environmental factors, and providing your skin with important nutrients and antioxidants applied topically. They can also hydrate the skin or even tighten it in some cases to provide instant visible benefits. You should make sure that you follow a routine and apply your face creams in the morning and in the night before bed. This routine should begin with an exfoliating cream or face wash which will remove dead skin cells (that can otherwise interfere with the mechanisms of the moisturizing creams and nutrients). Exfoliating can also make your wrinkles appear shallower by brining your skin down to the same level and it will give your skin more of a healthy glow (dead skin tends to look a little greyer). All this is instantly go-ing to make you look and feel younger. (Another way to get more of a glow is to give yourself a bit of a tan and the best way to do this without exposing yourself to sun damage is with a self-tanning moisturizer. This isn’t fake tan but rather a product that will in-crease your production of melanin naturally to give you a more glowing ap-pearance. This can help to prevent that washed out, grey-skinned look that is associated with old-age.) Continued on page 55

THE CHRONICLES OF LARRY AND ROGER: A Pair of Diabetic Feet Written by: Vicki L Myhre CPOD (I) CMP PFRP. Enlightened Soles. Internationally Certified Podologist. Registered through the Canadian Examining. Board of Health Practitioners

Hey All… Larry here. How was your May? Some crazy, terrific heat came our way after a long cold winter. Roger and I were mighty

happy to be outside getting the garden planted, and camping with our human. All is good with our world. It is so nice to be soaking up some vitamin C and D from that natural source. We have been putting our steps in on the outside and enjoying every step we take. We hope you have all been doing the same. Father’s Day is on the horizon. This is an exciting day for us, and we love to celebrate it with our Human and his Dad. We have all decided to barbeque this year. We have been searching for some great Diabetic-Friendly recipes and come across some great summer ideas on www.adwdiabetes.com. There are so many websites to support Diabetics, we are thrilled to have found this new one. We plan to make these Chicken Kabobs and accent them with a Cauliflower (Potato) Salad. The way we make our “Potato Salad” is to boil our cauliflower for five minutes, cool it in cold water and slice it like potatoes. We then add our eggs and radishes and celery and onion and a dressing made of mayonnaise and Dijon mustard and a splash of vinegar. Absolutely delish!!! We hope you will give it a try.

Thoughts on Summer BBQs www.adwdiabetes.com

The summer BBQ is not off limits but instead of the standard burgers and hot dogs with thick, saturated fat potato salad, think outside the usual. Easy, quick, fresh and delicious choices can guarantee a fun meal without the food negatives. Chicken breasts, marinated in light soy sauce, fresh pineapple juice, garlic and lemon, cut into cubes and threaded on metal skewers or bamboo (soak first) skewers cooked on the grill along with fresh corn on the cob and a

green salad can be a dinner winner. Potato salad can become a low carbohydrate/low fat treat with a few minor changes. Substitute cauliflower florets in bite size pieces and swap out half the potatoes. Use red or purple skin potatoes and keep the skin on for extra fibre. Boil the vegetables until softened and add thinly sliced red onion, hard-boiled egg, celery slices, celery seeds, Dijon mustard, red wine vinegar, pickle relish and a dash of light olive oil mayonnaise for a super side dish which is lighter on the calories, sugars and fats. Chill prior to serving. Take hummus to the next level this summer and don’t think of it as just a dip. Hummus is made from ground chick peas (carbohydrates), tahini, olive oil, lemon and a dash of salt. It has a lot of vitamins, minerals, protein, fibre and contains healthy fat. You can purchase it already made or whip up a batch in the blender. Besides using as a vegetable or pita bread dip, it can create a creamy salad dressing when added to olive oil and red wine vinegar. Fresh garlic cloves, chopped olives or basil leaves can be mixed into hummus for more flavor and antioxidants. Hummus can be used as a sandwich spread instead of nut butters or combined with light mayonnaise to give flavor and texture to a tuna or chicken salad sandwich. It can be used to baste lamb cubes or chicken thighs when added to a citrus juice or as a topping for roasted vegetables. If you don’t want to light the grill or heat the kitchen, make a simple chicken salad from cooked chicken, mashed avocado (substitute for mayonnaise), lime juice, crushed red pepper, frozen peas, scallions and parmesan cheese. Serve quinoa as a side dish. This meal has protein, carbohydrates, healthy fats and takes only a few minutes to prepare. Watch out for summer drinks, club soda does contain sodium, but seltzer does not. Most people do not realize that tonic water is full of sugar. Check flavoured sparkling waters that may have added caffeine, sodium or artificial flavours. Make your own lemonade by squeezing lemons (contain pectin) and add Stevia and ice. Lemons have soluble fibre and may increase alertness. Make your own iced tea and add flavour with orange slices and fresh mint.

Movement with a Message Shining a Spotlight on Student Mental Health

Did you know that one in every five Canadians struggles with mental illness? We

as a society are learning more and more about how to best approach mental health in our country and support those who grapple with these demons on a daily basis, but the reality is that these are complex issues that call for nuanced and multi-faceted solutions. Steps are being made on a big-picture level through nationwide mental health awareness campaigns, and the provincial government recently announced a $5 million grant to provide additional support for mental health and wellness initiatives in school – but while these efforts are certainly great to see, they’re just one part of a bigger puzzle. That’s where Steve Osmond and Connie Jakab come in. “Connie and I have known each other for a lot of years,” Osmond told me when I got the chance to chat with him about some of the great work he’s doing in our communities. “This past year,

we started talking more about how we can help. Mental health is making its way into the news headlines more and more, but it’s still mostly event-centered, like with Bell’s ‘Let’s Talk Day.’ Connie and I felt that rather than mental health being something that’s a blip on our screen from time to time that we could actually dig deeper and serve the community with real, practical tools to help them deal with the issues.” The point Osmond makes here is an important one: hosting one-day events is a great first step when it comes to raising awareness around mental health issues in our country, but what sort of concrete impact do these programs have for individuals struggling with mental illness the other 364 days of the year, when it’s not Let’s Talk Day? Osmond and Jakab are looking to help bridge the gap with an innovative approach involving dance, awareness, and laying the foundation for ongoing change and wellness. “The initiative’s called ‘Movement with a Message,’” Osmond informed me with pride. “We’re going into public high schools in Calgary, southern Alberta, and Vancouver, and we’re presenting topics that help invigorate the student body and energize teachers to have a more positive way to deal with mental health. It’s essentially a dance organization (think hip-hop and breakdancing), so that’s a big part of the presentation, but for the most part, Connie tells her own story of mental health issues within her family, and then I present on building a strategy for dealing with mental health. It comes at the issue from all different angles, and is meant to give students and teachers and peers the tools that they need to deal with mental health issues and make a lasting impact on an ongoing basis – not just for that afternoon.” By day, Steve Osmond runs a successful business coaching service (feel free to get in touch with him for seriously solid business advice at Rhapsody Strategies), and Connie Jakab got her start teaching at Decidedly Jazz Danceworks. That said, these two individuals are uniquely qualified to speak on matters of mental health and awareness – Osmond and Jakab are both parents who have experienced the trials and tribulations that come along with mental illness firsthand. The two of them have also directly worked with youth for over 20 years – Osmond as a youth pasThe Newsy Neighbour Magazine

tor, and Jakab on a grassroots-level within the dance and skating communities. “A lot of us often hope things will get better, and hope things will improve,” Osmond told me. “Rather than just having hope as a virtue or hope as an idea, my presentation is all about making hope into a plan. And it works. After our presentation, the mood in the school changes, the energy changes. Kids that were shy or introverted start to come out of their shells. It opens up the subject of mental health so that kids can talk about it. And at the end of the assembly, there are always students who come forward and say they need to talk to someone about what’s going on in their lives.” Hearing about positive results like these is absolutely incredible, but Osmond and Jakab can’t do it on their own. “Our schools are drastically underfunded when it comes to mental health,” Osmond informed me sadly. “The strain and stress on the system is strong, so we’ve come along to do what we can to strengthen the schools, to strengthen the teachers, and of course to reach the students. We seek sponsorships from courageous executives, business owners, and corporations. We ask them to sponsor an assembly, and that gives us the resources we need to do what we do.” If you or a loved one is familiar with the difficulties and struggles that come along with mental health issues, please consider donating to this extremely worthy cause. You can reach out to Movement with a Message to sponsor an assembly at www.movementwithamessage.com, or make a smaller donation to the Impacting Youth Mental Health Tour on gofundme.com. Any amount helps, and each contribution will go a long way towards helping Osmond and Jakab provide schools and students with the tools they need to help combat mental health issues and assist those struggling with mental illness to live better, happier lives.

Steven currently lives in Strathmore, but is originally from Newfoundland. At 25-years old, his passions in life are playing guitar, writing motivational stories and just writing in general. He’s a very positive and outgoing person who loves to watch football. Steven has Spina Bifida and is confined to a wheelchair, but his ultimate goal in life is to inspire people to be more positive, as positivity is one of my philosophies in life. Overall, Steven is just an average guy looking to make a difference in the world!

For as long as I can remember, I've had many people either stare at me or come up to me ask me why I'm in a wheelchair, and of course I would always answer and explain why. But as I got older, I slowly grew tired of being asked the same questions over and over again. I don't have a problem answering to little kids as they're still young and learning, but when I have people that are a little older and well educated (or should be) staring at me as if I'm "broken", it tends to get a little annoying. That's why in today's column, I'd like to talk a little bit about why schools should elaborate more about the body in health classes and bring more awareness to various disabilities and/or conditions. Speaking for myself, when I was going to school taking health class, I learned pretty much the usual topics like how the body works, hormones, etc. But I wasn't taught about much after that. And even though there's nothing wrong with that, I also feel that schools should also discuss more about various disabilities and conditions and talk about how they affect the body. Take me for example. I have Spina Bifida, which in layman's terms is a condition that basically means that my spine hasn't fully developed in the womb and I would eventually have to use a wheelchair for mobility due to complete paralysis from the waist down. Getting back to the subject, I'll admit, I don't know a whole lot about other disabilities aside from my own, but I really feel that students would really benefit from learning about disabilities of all kinds because there's so much to learn about the body! facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

Things Kids Say

When my baby granddaughter LeeAnn came home from the hospital, the aunts, uncles and cousins were there to greet her. I showed her cousin Alex the baby and told him, “This is Grandma’s girl.” Alex replied, “You are not her grandma; she doesn’t even know you.” When I told my son where milk comes from, he asked, “Mama, how do the cows sit on those little bottles?” On Easter one year, I got to see my 5-year-old granddaughter, Julia. I wore my best suit for the holiday. Julia said, “Grandpa, you look so handsome today. Did you take a shower?” A little girl climbed up onto her grandfather’s lap and asked, “Did God make me?” “Yes,” the grandpa replied. “Did he make you, too?” “Yes.” “Well,” the girl said, looking at his wrinkles and thinning hair, “He sure is doing a better job nowadays!” My 3-year-old grandson, Cruise, has always been impressed with Grandpa’s mighty machines, which include a tractor, an ATV and a snowmobile. One day his mom said to him, “Let’s go to Grandma’s to use her sewing machine.” He quickly responded, “Can I ride it?” A few months back my wife showed a picture of herself to our 3-year-old daughter. In the picture my wife is about 7 years old. “Do you know who this is?” Daughter: (gasps) “That’s me when I’m bigger!” My son when he was 6: “Dad, can we get a cat?” Me: “Your Mom is allergic to cats, so no.” My Son: “Mom can sleep outside." This morning, my wife told my 3-year-old daughter that owls were nocturnal. My daughter responded, “Yes, owls are not turtles.” Son and I are playing catch. I have a terrible throw that sails over his head. I say, “Sorry, that was a bad throw.” He stops, gives me a kind look and says, “No daddy, that was a wonderful throw.” Then takes 2 steps towards getting the ball. He stops again, turns back around and says, “When we say something nice, even when we don’t mean it at all, that’s called being polite, right?”

Strathmore, AB • Ph: 403-901-6392 I was on the phone with my wife discussing dinner plans and my 7-year-old informed us that “salad is ruining my life.” I try to make it a point to take about 10 min at the end of each evening to help my daughter straighten up her room. After a particularly rough day, I sat down on the floor of her room to help her sort thru her dolls and I had muttered “I really don’t have the juice for this tonight…” My daughter left the room and returned a few minutes later with a cup of apple juice for me. My dad has told me that when I was really young, he told me once “I don’t ever want to see you do that again.” and I responded with “okay close your eyes.”

My four-year-old son was in the bathroom with the door closed. I knocked and said, “What’s going on in there? His reply: “Nothing, it’s just me and my penis.” My little sister was at the doctor’s office for her annual check up– she had to be somewhere around 3. The nurse was asking all the standard coordination type questions–touch your nose, put your hands up, jump, etc. Being a healthy capable little devil, she’s doing everything fine. Then, the nurse says, “stand on one foot.” My little sister looks at the nurse, looks down, and hesitates. Then she walks over and stands on one of the nurse’s feet. My cousin’s daughter’s response to “I love you,” was “I love me too” for the longest time.

Life Lesson on the Golf Course… from a Non-Golfer “Golf is played mainly on a five-and-a-halfinch course… the space between your ears.” ~Bobby Jones

As I sit here with thoughts of the upcoming Women Talk going through my head, the sun is shining and I can hear the grass being cut at the condo where I am staying with a friend until my home is ready for us to move back into. As the mind often does, my thoughts begin to wander. I am thinking about the incredible Women Talk in Strathmore last month and how the stories that were shared really connected the women together and the comments they made about having learned things about themselves as they listened to the experiences of others. My mind then flitted past memories of things I have done that brought me important life lessons. Some of these were learning events, some were conversations with friends or even strangers, and some lessons came from just ‘being’ in the moment like I used to do as a teenager when I would lay on fresh cut grass and look for images in the clouds. Wandering on, I thought of the many things I have chosen to do in order to get outside my comfort zone and experience something new and the new things I have planned to do this year. As the Women Talk Founder said last month, having gumption is

believing you can do it without knowing how and in the end, you accomplish things you never have before. I thought about how I had decided to learn how to golf a few years ago and I realized that golf had taught me an important life lesson, a lesson I uncovered in that very moment. I realized that the five-and-a-half-inch course (space between my ears) had told me all kinds of reasons why golf was good but in truth, I wasn’t passionate about it like many others are… to me it felt like a chore. I realized just how important it was to make choices based on what matters to us and that takes knowing who we are. One of the Talkers last month spoke about ‘finding your person’, the one person who is always there for you with no questions asked. They give you confidence and never leave your side during good times and bad. We know that family can often play this role (thanks, dad!) but we can also play this role in our own lives for ourselves and sometimes, that takes courage. Another Talker spoke about the importance of forgiveness, forgiveness for ourselves and for others. Why we must learn to let go of the storms that come in life, let go of the fears that control us, and say yes to our lives. We all have hurts that happen, we all have decisions we wish we had not made, but through it all we always have the gift of being able to choose how we respond to life. I forgave myself for investing a lot of time and money into a sport I didn’t enjoy and instead I was grateful for what it taught me about myself. This is the beauty of Women Talk. We have stories that are entertaining, take hold of your heart, are inspiring or make you pause and think. All of them are real. Being real is something deep and meaningful. Being real means choosing what is right for you. Arnold Palmer says that “golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated” and I completely agree. I also believe that life can be the same way, but by sharing the ‘realness’ of who we are with people who support and understand us, life can be a bit less complicated. So, play golf if that’s what you enjoy. Be inspired if that’s important to you. Create connections if that brings you happiness. Experience new things outside your comfort zone. Whatever you choose, choose to be real. Women Talk Strathmore is on the third Thursday of every month at The Station. You can book your tickets online at www.womentalk.ca/events, or for those who consider themselves non-savvy with technology, call 403-934-8516 to reserve your seat. Bring a girlfriend or two and embrace the comfort of the WomenTalk community. We look forward to seeing you! We need to replace this government in 2019 and get back to common sense solutions that actually get pipelines built without public funds.

Kinder Morgan never asked for taxpayer money. They were ready to invest in this project. All they wanted was certainty from the federal government. But now taxpayers are on the hook for billions because of this government’s inability to get a pipeline built – and there’s still no guarantee that it will ever be built! The Liberals would have you believe that risking taxpayer dollars on the project was the only way to move ahead with it. This is simply not true. Under our former Conservative government, four pipelines were built without any need for nationalization schemes. The $4.5 billion the Liberals are spending is just the start. It only buys the existing pipeline. If the project is actually expanded – and that’s a big if, given that the Prime Minister still has no plan to overcome opposition – it could cost many billions more. It is inexcusable that this government’s mismanagement has taken us from billions of private sector investments in Canada to

The Liberals have also introduced a massive reform to our criminal justice system – Bill C-75. This omnibus Bill is a huge step in the wrong direction. C-75 weakens our justice system. It hybridizes indictable-only offences by adding summary conviction as a sentencing option. That means some serious crimes could be punishable by a mere fine. And some of the offences listed in the Bill are undoubtedly serious crimes. We’re talking things like: participation in a terrorist group. Impaired driving offences causing bodily harm. Kidnapping a child. Possessing stolen property. Taking part in gang activities. And many more. The Liberals are making these changes to try to deal with the backlog in our court system. But they haven’t yet taken the obvious first step of appointing more judges. As of April 1, 59 federal judicial vacancies remain. Even worse, the changes mean that the federal backlog will be downloaded onto our provincial courts, which are already dealing with their own delays. It’s going to make a bad situation that much worse. Provincial judges, courts, prisons and legal aid could all be stretched to a breaking point. We could have many more cases thrown out for taking too long. C-75 is omnibus legislation, which the Liberals promised they would not introduce. The Bill does contain some good measures that we Conservatives can support, like removing certain unconstitutional provisions from the criminal code.

Cover Up Painting & Flooring BEST WORK & REASONABLE PRICES

This is going to make our justice system more of a ‘revolving door’ than it is now and make rural crime even harder to deal with. My Opposition colleagues and I are opposed to C-75 and will be doing our best to stop this government from putting criminals before victims yet again.

10 Places You Will Never Be Able To Visit BUSINESS

Winner 2016-2017

1. Coca-Cola Recipe Vault, Georgia, USA

Recipes are always personal to those who come up with them, but for a drinks company that generates billions each year, safeguarding a winning formula can mean hiding it in a steel vault. In 2011, the most famous recipe in the world was transferred from its original vault at SunTrust Bank a few minutes up the road to the new World of Coca-Cola exhibit in Atlanta, Georgia. Monitored 24 hours a day, the majority of the vault's interior is heavily guarded, ensuring only top-level Coca-Cola executives access.

2. Area 51, Nevada, USA

Shrouded in secrecy, Area 51 is also fiercely guarded, which is probably why conspiracy theorists believe the base is more than just a testing ground. Whatever you believe, chances are you won't be able to find out what's truly behind closed doors due to armed guards surrounding the entrances. And for those daring to go beyond the limits, you won't get very far.

Only three people have ever successfully reached the bottom. All others who have tried failed to return to the surface.

6. Pripyat, Ukraine

Chernobyl, along with the nuclear disaster in Fukushima, Japan, remains the worse nuclear disaster in recorded human history. 31 people lost their lives while countless others suffered longterm defects from the radioactive particles that spread over vast swathes of Eastern Europe. Resultantly and almost expectedly, the town soon became nothing but a mirage of lost objects, broken homes and empty stretches of desolate wasteland. 3. Surtsey, Iceland

Potentially one of the youngest drylands on Earth, Surtsey in Iceland was only formed in the late 1960s following a volcanic explosion. Thus, the rural and pristine nature of the largely untouched island has no doubt drawn attention across the world but only a few scientists have ever been allowed to explore it.

4. Bank of England Vaults, London

Guarded within an inch of its life, those wanting to immerse themselves in a room full of gleaming gold bars can only do so with a 90cm long key. Don't have one? Well, tracking down someone who does will prove difficult considering employees’ names are kept secret.

What are Values? Spring is typically a time of change; a time of rebirth and growth. Today, as I look out at all of the blossoms bursting out on my trees, I’m amazed at how every spring, life quickly appears and becomes green and fresh and new again... and ALIVE!!! But what does that have to do with values? In a word, APPRECIATION. My values stem from an appreciation for certain things.

These values started along long time ago, from my hard-working parents. They taught me to appreciate things that were right in front of me, like where I live. I suggest that if you embrace where you live, in the community that you chose, it really does make a difference. People own houses and businesses in our communities. The members of our towns have invested themselves into the towns in which we ALL live. Our kids go to school here, we attend community events and sports, and we also belong to volunteer groups. Being involved in the community is so meaningful and creates a sense of pride... that sounds like a value to me, and one to live up to. I love to get out and see friends and family and new acquaintances or go grab a meal at my favourite restaurant. Of course, we all need to shop here. Having a vested interest in our communities makes us better citizens. I know that being involved helps me to be better professional and a better person. I think it’s so important to wake every morning with a passion in my heart to make today and every day, a great day; making a difference in the community where one lives, is so fulfilling. What other values did my parents instill in me? To work hard, of course, and be the best that I can be for the community. They showed me that it takes tenacity to work hard and I feel that if you want to be good at your chosen profession, you need to APPRECIATE the people who live in your community and show them that you are determined to work hard and to show you care. Be knowledgeable in your chosen field; go and talk with local

Oh, and then there is the value of taking on a challenge; reaching for something that might seem difficult at first. As a Realtor, I do see my fair share of challenges, but my dad taught me early on that you DO NOT QUIT. Look the challenge dead on and keep working until it is resolved. Whether it is my self-doubt, or even “naysayers” suggesting that something is not possible, I say push through. PROVE your worth, meet the challenge and concur it. This value also got me through a lot of long runs and bike rides, training for marathons and triathlons. The last value that I’d like to share is honour; be honourable. Bring honour to everything you do. This is a value that I asked of my own children as they were growing up. Be honourable citizens. |PRIDE |PASSION |PURPOSE

I am thrilled to be part of the Newsy Neighbour Family. While I do not have the honour of representing Strathmore residents and those of you in Wheatland County you may contact Independent MLA Derek Fildebrandt. Please connect with his office at 403-934-4400 or Strathmore.Brooks@ assembly.ab.ca.

Hello Newsy Neighbour readers! It is fascinating, at least to me, how fast our world changes around us. We notice that our loved ones grow up, graduate, get married, have children, and we have dear family members and friends pass on, leaving behind memories and hopefully books of pictures that will give our future generations insight into who we were, and why we did what we did. I genuinely want to understand what this snapshot in time in Alberta will look like to us in a few years. I wonder how often governments that are in power look at their recent history, as a snap shot and I wonder if they are able to recognize that puzzle they have created and their attempts to put all the broken pieces back together do not add up, and sometimes cause significant grief, not only to today’s Albertans, but moreover to future generations. My assumption is that every person who has been elected has good intentions, myself included. The question is for me everyday is, can I look at my family and my communities and know that I tried to do what was in their best interests? This brings me to pipelines, of course. Did you ever think in your lifetime that you would know the names of pipelines, their contents, their destination and how the success of a pipeline is tied directly to the success and prosperity of our country? The silver lining of all this discussion is that we are all a little more engaged than we once were. This alone is a win in my eyes. Our children will be better educated on this file and it (at least in my house) becomes table conversation, or lunchtime conversation with our friends at work. Those conversations become rallies and the voices of the people become impossible for governments to ignore. This in itself is amazing. The voices of the prairies, and those of the folks in BC are starting to go from a low buzz to a roar. This is truly powerful and we should never forget as the electorate how powerful our voices are. The pipelines are attacked because the negative rhetoric around them has been allowed to be the dominant voice. What will our grandchildren learn about this event, and this time in Alberta and Canada’s history? Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson believes that Canada should “get off fossil fuels”, and truly believes that our resource industry only brings in in his words “a tiny fraction of the overall economy and job count” (the Vancouver Province, Kenneth Green and Elmira Aliakbari, May 13, 2018). The voices of Canadians will soon prove this to be the wrong direction as we see increased support for pipelines in BC and in all provinces. And just to be clear, the energy industry, through direct and indirect jobs, employs almost a million people, and that includes many First Nations peoples, as well. Kenneth Green and Elmira Aliakbari go on to explain that our resource industry brought in 19 billion dollars in revenue and accounts for 18% of Canada’s exports. We here in Alberta have paid over 220 billion more to the federal governments than we have received back. This is about our prosperity, our identity as the cleanest producers in the world. Now suddenly, as the puzzle starts to take form, we see that our government is now going to use your hard-earned tax dollars to buy a pipeline that, until a month ago, was funded by the private sector with no actual cost to you and I. What motivates decisions like this? I wish I knew. Why would

both our provincial and federal governments pay for a project that simply takes the OK from our Prime Minister? Kinder Morgan has already been approved. What is going on? This is creating instability, and we are showing to the world that we are unable to keep our promises. There is no strong leadership, and so the world shrugs its shoulders and looks for somewhere else to operate, and those jurisdictions are waiting with open arms, less regulatory burden, worse environmental records, and in many cases, atrocious human rights records. This is what “carbon leakage” will buy us. Carbon leakage simply means that if we are not allowed to sell our clean, ethical, energy resources to the world somebody else will certainly do it. The views of the environmental movement and the targeting of the Oil Sands, the hiring of anti-oil activists by our own Alberta Government just over a year ago, and the Prime Minister’s desire to be seen globally as some sort of environmental savior has destroyed 2 pipelines to tideContinue reading at www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Where to start when looking for window coverings The perfect window treatment should do more than just cover a window. It can make a big difference in your home, managing its daily illumination, privacy and energy management needs and adding value and style to any room. Whether it’s for your kitchen, bedroom or living room, here are the features to keep in mind during your search. Light control. Harsh light at the window? The right window covering can transform sunlight into a wonderful soft glow and help protect your furnishings from damaging UV rays. On the other hand, if you’re looking for more light, opt for a treatment designed to help channel light deeper into your room, filling dark corners and reducing the need for electrical lighting. Energy efficiency. You can keep your rooms warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer and save on home bills with energy-efficient products. Look for products engineered with innovative cellular air pockets that can block up to 50 per cent of the heat transfer at the window. Smart home shade automation. Imagine your shades moving automatically to the exact position you prefer for the specific lighting effect you love or adjusting themselves for the optimal energy

efficiency throughout the day. For this revolutionary hands-free experience, check out the PowerView motorization system from Hunter Douglas that automatically moves your shades according to schedules you set. Beautiful, unique designs. The right window fashion can become an interior’s focal point, setting style throughout your home. Choose textures, finishes and colour combinations that complement your space in durable materials for long-term reliability. Safety. Kids and pets are innately curious about the world around them, so even basic household items like window coverings can turn into potential hazards. Look for enhanced safety features that reduce the risk of accidents, like cordless and motorized operating systems, retractable lift cords, cord tensioners and wand controls.

Crafted by Builders Who Value Community Last month, we took some time to get to know the burgeoning community of Wildflower Ranch – a friendly new neighbourhood growing by leaps and bounds on the west end of Strathmore. This vibrant development makes it a point to embody that particular brand of small-town living we all value so dearly, striking the perfect balance amongst its well-spaced lots to deliver plenty of peace and quiet while also embracing the cordial warmth and hospitality that life in our southern Alberta communities is famous for. This issue, we’re taking the opportunity to focus on the folks that make all of this possible: the builders. So, without further ado, we’re proud to highlight the teams that are responsible for making Wildflower Ranch the beautiful, welcoming development it is. Come visit sometime, and keep an eye out for these names as you drive down the streets and avenues and get a taste of what life is like in charming Wildflower Ranch.

Based right here in Strathmore, Aquilla Homes has become one of this town’s preferred homebuilders and has earned the respect of the community along the way, winning two back-toback Reader’s Choice Best in Business Awards from The Newsy Neighbour, as well as the Home Owner Mark of Excellence award for the Best Customer Experience. Since being founded in 2002, Aquilla has made it a habit to work closely with each customer in order to establish a strong builder/client relationship and deliver custom homes precisely to the make and specification each new homeowner is looking for. Quality is always second-to-none, and no detail is too small or unimportant for Aquilla when it comes to building your family’s next home.

Operating out of nearby Calgary, Loreck Homes was founded in 1978, and is celebrating 40 years of building dream homes for folks all across Alberta. This company began from humble roots: Leonard Gieck started off in the industry as a tradesman working for other builders when he decided to take a chance and open his own residential construction business. He started out with two partners, a big loan, and an even bigger dream, and Loreck Homes has been growing ever since, relying on their quality craftsmanship and exemplary customer service to quickly build a sterling reputation as one of the best, most attentive builders around, particularly within Calgary and the southern Alberta communities we call home.

BUSINESS BYTES:

Sometimes you can find yourself running your business from within an overly tight group of people – your neighbour did the website, a young cousin is supposed to be posting to your social media and there is ‘that’ friend who is always willing to tell you where you are going wrong. thenewsyneighbour.com

A healthy, growing business needs a knowledgeable team. Now you are thinking - “I can’t afford it.” Instead though, think of the money you stand to make, how much more energy and time you will have to work ‘on’ your business & for customer/clients if you have the support and experience of professional people behind you. Building a team does take a bit of time but never assume it doesn’t have to be on your terms. Hiring a part-time bookkeeper is better than no bookkeeper. Paying a social media marketer an affordable monthly flat rate will come back in customer awareness and business growth. Don’t have a website just to have a website. If you cannot pay for a properly designed one that is aesthetically pleasing, has relevant and original content plus clear site navigation you are probably better off building a thriving social media presence for the time being.

Create Your Team

The end result of free or cheap services is a website with no SEO and amateurish appearance, social media with no measurable results and you second-guessing yourself about every decision. The other scenario is you are trying to do everything yourself.

When it comes to hiring someone know what you and your business needs from them. Interview at least three persons in the field. Your company is unique they should ask questions and take the time to get to know you. You, in turn, should be prepared to listen to their suggestions with an open mind. Expertise, fresh perspectives and ideas are why you are hiring someone. Ask for a written quote for work as discussed; the right team member is intended to meet your business needs, not overextend you. The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

The Ultimate Anti-Aging Guide continued from page 37. After this you should then use a protective cream such as Protect and Per-fect from No 7, which will protect your skin from UV rays and oxidative damage. Finally, a rejuvenating moisturizer should be applied which should contain vitamins A and E – both of which are vital in skin repair and colla-gen, which will help keep the skin plum and elastic (it can be considered ‘nature’s Botox’). Some creams actually do include collagen but there is some dispute as to whether this can actually penetrate deeply enough into the lower levels of the skin in order to have any benefit. Some products, such as Bio Oil, claim to use carrier molecules and other strategies to get around this limitation. Take a look at the back of the pack when using any moisturizer and look for things like biotin (vitamin B7), retinol, green tea ex-tract, CoQ10 etc. Be wary of bold claims though and be sure to check re-views before parting with hard earned cash. There are tons of options out there – including using hemorrhoid cream around the eyes to tighten the skin and remove crows’ feet. If you want to experiment with that then go ahead – but for the most part there’s no reason to spend over the odds and any healthy moisturizer (ideally something organic, such as a deep sea mud) will do the trick. The moisturizing element will also help give the skin moisture and keep it subtle and elastic. While you apply these creams, you should use circular motions with the pads of your fingers to massage the skin and encourage blood flow in the surface which will help provide it with more vital nutrients and keep the skin tone more even. Use concentric circles moving inwards towards the center of the face – it’s also very relaxing and will help to keep the skin subtle and soft. Whatever products you choose, just make sure you are using something to exfoliate, something to protect and something to rejuvenate and moistur-ize.
