From the Publishers:
Remember when you were younger and the month of June was always the best month of the year (except December of course), why you ask, now come on – it was the last month of school before summer vacation, freedom and camping. This June Issue like all our past June Issues is packed full of Camping food, recipes and tips as well as all the swell things to do with and for your dear old dad on Father’s Day. Try maybe a new direction when it comes to dad this year and Family Page may inspire you with a few different ideas. If you have ever thought about what it is to be a real man have a gander at the light-hearted notes on Page 20 – likely to give you your laugh of the day and Randy’s view on the situation on Page 30 (Morse Code). The controversy about table scraps vs. Dog Food is explored on Page 48 and may surprise you with some little known facts about what your best friend is really eating. Derek inspires me monthly with his always interesting Book reviews and if you are looking for a book about the big picture you may want to read Derek’s review on “Job Wars”. It will give you something to ponder. Whether June or December is your favorite month, make the extra effort to enjoy each and every single day, make this Father’s Day the best ever and don’t forget to take your Newsy Neighbour with you when you head out on your first camping trip of the season and pass it along to your outdoor neighbour when your done. We like making new friends! ~ Kathryn Hartwell, Aleesha Gosling & Denise Geremia

Are you ready for some Football?
The message from Calgary Stampeders Head Coach and General Manager John Hufnagel is loud and clear: making the playoffs is just not good enough! The Stampeders have lost three straight playoff games, three seasons of disappointment and early exits, and that is not acceptable for this organization. Former all-stars Henry Burris, Joffrey Reynolds and Burke Dales are all long gone and more veterans are now on notice as another CFL season kicks off this month. Yes, the message is loud and clear at McMahon. If you are a veteran player, take nothing for granted because this is the CFL and there are younger, cheaper and very hungry players ready to step in and get noticed. As far as I’m concerned, one of most intriguing battles to watch at this year’s training camp is at receiver. Ken-Yon Rambo will be 34 this season and although he is a difference maker, injuries have plagued his production for three straight years. 32 year old Romby Byrant has never missed a game in Calgary but last season his production dropped off dramatically. Nik Lewis is only 30, but 8 seasons in the league has started to take its toll on his 5’10” frame. 25 year old Landon Talley proved last season he is ready to take a bigger role in the offense and will be given every opportunity to do so. The Stampeders also have high expectations for Texas El-Paso rookie Joe West and rookie Maurice Price out of Charleston Southern. Veteran Jabari Auther will also be pushed at this year’s camp. The Stamps beefed up their Canadian content at receiver with the free agent signing of Chris Bauman and they are hoping for improved development from Johnny Forzani and Anthony Parker. There are only so many spots on a 42 man roster. While many fans were sad to see punter Burke Dales move north to the Eskimos, it has created another must-see battle at camp. Aussie kicker Scott Crough is a neat story and has a big strong leg, but the question is will he be able to handle the heat when the lights (and pressure) come on? Former first round pick Rob Maver lost his placekicking job to Rene Paredes last year and he has been working out with kicking Guru Don Sweet. Maver could save the Stamps a roster spot if he could handle dual roles, but that is a long shot. One of these kickers will either end up on the 4 man reserve, come down with a mysterious injury, or be released. Page 12
The Newsy Neighbour
The biggest change for the Stamps this year will come on defense. Not because of personnel, because of philosophy. The less than classy departure of Defensive Coordinator Chris Jones left the team scrambling in the off season. Dave Walkowsky was promoted to DC but then weeks later he bolted for a coaching job with Georgia Tech. This opened the door for Rick Campbell. Veteran lineman Devonne Claybrooks announced his retirement and joined the coaching staff. The number one challenge for Campbell and his coaching staff is to improve the pass rush. While Jones was a fan of smaller, undersized, more athletic defenders Campbell is a little more old school. “We will have some creative formations,” says Campbell. “But we are going to give our guys a chance by rushing 4 or 5 guys more consistently.” A simpler system should allow this young group of players to excel! The Stamps will also have flexibility with their Canadian talent on the defensive line. Corey Mace is 100 percent healthy, Brian Bulke will have a full training camp under his belt, Junior Turnior is coming off a fine rookie season and don’t forget about Justin Phillips. Throw in 2012 first round pick Ameet Pall and the coaching staff will have some options. The secondary is very strong and Campbell confirms “Eric Fraser and Demetrice Morley will both have major rolls.” The linebacker battle will be the most interesting on defense. Brandon Isaac is gone but will not be missed. If newly signed veteran Joe Lobendahn can stay healthy, he will help stop the run creating an intense battle with Juwan Simpson and Robert “the Hammer” McCune. Also keep an eye on rookies Deron Mayo and Marvin White. I can’t wait for the regular season to start on July 1st vs. the Montreal Alouettes. Once again, we’ll bring you all the action on QR77. Mark Stephen and Greg Peterson are the longest serving play by play team in the CFL. This will be their 16th consecutive season. Glen Suiter, our CFL insider, is back for another season on QR. The weekly on air feature is proudly sponsored by Bryon Smith Ford in Strathmore and runs every Tuesday night starting on June 5th at 7 pm.

A woman was at work when she received a phone call that her daughter was very sick with a fever. She left her work and stopped by the pharmacy to get some medication for her daughter. When returning to her car she found that she had locked her keys in the car. She was in a hurry to get home to her sick daughter, she didn’t know what to do, so she called her home and told the baby sitter what had happened and that she did not know what to do. The baby sitter told her that her daughter was getting worse. She said, “You might find a coat hanger and use that to open the door.” The woman looked around and found an old rusty coat hanger that had been thrown down on the ground, possibly by someone else who at some time or other had locked their keys in their car. Then she looked at the hanger and said, “I don’t know how to use this.” So she bowed her head and asked God to send her some help. Within five minutes an old rusty car pulled up, with a dirty, greasy, bearded man who was wearing an old biker skull rag on his head. The woman thought, “Great God. This is what you sent to help me??” But, she was desperate, so she was also very thankful. The man got out of his car and asked her if he could help. She said “Yes, my daughter is very sick... I stopped to get her some medication and I locked my keys in my car, I must get home to her. Please, can you use this hanger to unlock my car?” “Sure,” he replied. He walked over to the car, and in less than one minute the car was opened. She hugged the man and through her tears she said, “THANK YOU SO MUCH!! You are a very nice man.” The man replied, “Lady, I am not a nice man. I just got out of prison today. I was in prison for car theft and have only been out for about an hour.” The woman hugged the man again and with sobbing tears cried out loud, “Thank you, God, for sending me a professional!”

The Smiths were unable to conceive children and decided to use a surrogate father to start their family. On the day the surrogate father was to arrive, Mr. Smith kissed his wife and said, “I’m off. The man should be here soon.” Half an hour later, just by chance a door-to-door baby photographer rang the doorbell, hoping to make a sale. “Good morning, madam. I’ve come to...” “Oh, no need to explain. I’ve been expecting you,” Mrs. Smith cut in. “Really?” the photographer asked. “Well, good. I’ve made a speciality of babies.” “That’s what my husband and I had hoped. Please come in and have a seat.” After a moment, she asked, blushing, “Well, where do we start?” “Leave everything to me. I usually try two in the bathtub, one on the couch and perhaps a couple on the bed. Sometimes the living room floor is fun too; you can really spread out!” “Bathtub, living room, and floor? No wonder it didn’t work for Harry and me.” “Well, ma’am, none of us can guarantee a good one every time. But, if we try several different positions and I shoot from six or seven different angles, I’m sure you’ll be pleased with the results.” “My, that’s a lot of...” gasped Mrs. Smith. “Madam, in my line of work, a man must take his time. I’d love to be in and out in five minutes, but you’d be disappointed with that, I’m sure.” “Don’t I know it,” Mrs. Smith said quietly. The photographer opened his briefcase and pulled out a portfolio of his baby pictures. “This was done on the top of a bus in downtown London.” “Oh my goodness!” Mrs. Smith exclaimed, tugging at her handkerchief. “And these twins turned out exceptionally well, when you consider their mother was so difficult to work with.” “She was difficult?” asked Mrs. Smith. “Yes, I’m afraid so. I finally had to take her to Hyde Park to get the job done right. People were crowding around four and five deep, pushing to get a good look.” “Four and five deep?” asked Mrs. Smith, eyes widened in amazement. “Yes,” the photographer said. “And for more than three hours too. The mother was constantly squealing and yelling. I could hardly concentrate. Then darkness approached and I began to rush my shots. Finally, when the squirrels began nibbling on my equipment, I just packed it all in.” Mrs. Smith leaned forward. “You mean squirrels actually chewed on your, um... equipment?” “That’s right. Well, madam, if you’re ready, I’ll set up my tripod so we can get to work.” “Tripod?????” “Oh yes, I have to use a tripod to rest my Canon on. It’s much too big for me to hold for very long. Ma’am? Ma’am? ... Good Lord, she’s fainted!!” www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Hola Aleesha, Kathryn and Denise
I just wanted to let you know how awesome you are for putting together The Newsy Neighbour. Let me explain........ I am originally a Cape Bretoner, who ended up in Ottawa, just retired in Sept 2011, and made the plunge and moved to a Strathmore acreage (met this really great guy... so hopefully this latest edition will come in handy - wink, wink!). So, as you can imagine, lots is happening with my life and many exciting and wonder times are in store for me. But moving and living out west can be quite a culture shock, so I was thrilled to discover the Newsy Neighbour. Why? It has helped me feel connected to my new home, and to my new community. I have used The Newsy Neighbour to find a fantastic’ hair dresser, a ‘yummy’ bakery, my ‘always knowing’ car mechanic and many other local businesses - but most importantly, these connections have also resulted in new friendships. So at least from me - thanks Newsy Neighbour for being there! I also love the great humour and the stories, so keep up the great work. Sincerely, “Thank you so much Edie. It is thanks to readers like you our magazine is so successful. We really appreciNew to Strathmore, ate you.” ~ The Newsy Neighbour. ( Edie was one of our winners of a $50 Gift Certificate. The Gift Edie Tomaso Certificate chosen was for Marks Dent Repair found on page 25.)

CAMPING GAMES
An elimination game where players try to pull others into an object. Players stand in a circle and hold hands. A trash can is in the middle of the circle. The leader says 3-2-1-go, at which point players, while holding tightly to the hands of the players next to them, try to pull the circle back so that other plays are pulled into the trashcan. If a player touches the trash can, they are out. If two players let go of each other’s hands, both of those players are out. The last one remaining wins.
Circle Dodgeball Players stand in a circle. One player starts with the ball and throws it at another player. Player must catch it and throw it at another. If the ball touches a player and they do not catch it, that player is eliminated. If a player throws it and it does not hit a player, the thrower is eliminated. Players must throw the ball with two hands and may not raise it above their head to throw. Players may not move their feet (other than to make the circle smaller when a player is eliminated). Players may not throw the ball at the person directly beside them (unless there are 4 players or fewer remaining).
Some national parks have long waiting lists for camping reservations. When you have to wait a year to sleep next to a tree, something is wrong. ~George Carlin
Camping First Aid
An easy way to think about the necessary contents of a first-aid kit is to break it up into two categories: bandages and medicine. For a bare-bones kit you want plenty of gauze, including at least one roll or package of bandages and some non-adhesive gauze. A handful of butterfly bandages, different-size bandages and an ace bandage should be included as well. As far as medication goes, Tylenol, Advil or a generic equivalent, an anti-inflammatory such as aspirin, an antihistamine such as Benadryl and diarrhea medication would be sufficient for most short-term needs. A few pairs of rubber gloves, paramedic’s scissors, alcohol pads, Neosporin, lots of duct tape and a CPR face shield should finish the kit off. A small Tupperware container can make for a cheap, waterproof carrying case.

Top 10 Foods for Family Camping You don’t have to go overboard when it comes to preparing meals on camping trips. Many of the foods that you already prepare at home make great camping meals, too. Camping is about relaxing in the great outdoors, though, so focus on meals that are easy to prepare and don’t require a great amount of cleanup afterwards. Although it may sound boring, we tend to cook the same meals on all of our camping trips. This routine helps ensure that we don’t forget anything and the meals are basic enough that they can be jazzed-up to make them a little different, if we’re in the mood. 1. Pancake mix, butter and syrup have been the quintessential camping breakfast for many years, since it is easy to prepare and cook over a fire. 2. Hamburger, buns and fries, or skirt steak and tortillas, are two traditional meals that are perfect for cooking over a fire. 3. Eggs and sausage or bacon just seems better when they’re cooked over a fire, or on a camp stove. There’s no easier way to get the kids up and out of the tent in the morning, than the smell of sausage or bacon. 4. Pasta and marinara is great for lunches and a quick dinner on Friday night, after arriving at the campground. It is quick and easy to prepare but, particularly in cold weather, is a lot more satisfying than a cold meal. 5. Peanut butter bars are a great snack food to quench the mid-day munchies and they travel well, so they make great trail snacks. 6. Marshmallows don’t have any redeeming nutritional value, but combined with graham crackers and chocolate bars they become a magical campfire treat that your kids are guaranteed to talk about at school on Monday morning. 7. Milk is great for hot cocoa on those cool camping nights, but milk and cereal are also the perfect Sunday morning breakfast when you are getting ready to pack-up and head for home. 8. Juice is essential when camping with kids and it helps keep them hydrated if they are not big water drinkers. 9. If beer is not essential for camping, then it is very close. 10. Cheese, onion and peppers are what separate a bland camping meal from something everyone will remember. Mix them with eggs in a skillet for a great breakfast, or grill onions and peppers over the fire for tasty fajitas. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

What to Bring on a Camping Trip With any luck, each camping trip proves to be a unique experience. There are many wonderful things that nature has to offer. But, no matter where you’re headed, a few things should always come with you. Below is the “short list” of camping essentials that should always be packed. • A tent, tarp, and sleeping bag – as well as a tent repair kit • Pot, pan, dishes, utensils, and fire-starting materials (preferably waterproof matches or a butane lighter) • A utility knife and length of rope • Plenty of water (get gallon sizes for cooking and cleaning) • Energy rich, easily prepared foods and snacks (think items like pasta, beans, ground beef, peanut butter, chicken, trail mix, and oatmeal). Do not forget the can opener if you have canned food • Plenty of clothing (a good rule of thumb in temperate areas is enough for two to three layers daily) • A tight-closing cooler to store your food items in • Hand sanitizer and biodegradable soap (wet wipes are always needed – especially after using an outhouse) • Optionally, outdoor gear like fishing poles and hiking equipment • Garbage bags (do not litter!) • Flashlights and/or lanterns (with extra batteries) • First Aid Kit, complete with a whistle and bear spray Page 18

Enough Truck And Tips Too often new RV owners find they have been oversold, left believing their tow vehicle will be adequate for their new RV. Unfortunately, exceeding the vehicles maximum towing capacity affects stopping ability, handling, and may cause damage to the drive train. To avoid making this mistake, it’s crucial to know the weight ratings of both the tow vehicle and trailer. Weight Ratings: GCWR (Gross Combined Weight Rating) of the tow vehicle is the maximum combined weight rating of the tow vehicle and fully loaded trailer. Note: maximum trailer weight is determined assuming driver and one passenger in tow vehicle - any additions, including optional equipment, passengers and cargo in tow vehicle must also be subtracted from maximum trailer weight. GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) is the maximum fully loaded weight as noted on VIN label of the trailer. DW (Dry Weight) is the weight of the trailer from factory. Staying within the tow vehicles GCWR is a guaranteed way not to exceed the tow vehicle’s towing capacity. Avoid being the one bogging down traffic, making it bumper-tobumper for miles by doing your homework and know your weights. Lastly, a few tips to get you RV ready to hit the open road. Always start by checking tire pressure and condition of both the tow vehicle and trailer tires. Having an under inflated tire may cause unnecessary swaying, while an over inflated tire can make for a very rough ride. Both under inflated and over inflated tires cause excessive tire wear, leading to blowouts and possible loss of control. In some instances a tire blowout can propel tire tread into the interior of the RV, causing extensive damage. A quick walk-around-check at every stop is recommended to keep you safely motoring. Inspecting trailer brakes and bearings on a yearly basis keeps you safe and prevents facing costly repairs that should have been avoided. Proper functioning brakes are a must in any RV! Relying on tow vehicle brakes alone when facing a steep grade or making a sudden stop is a situation every RV’er wants to avoid. Having a bearing blow due to lack of maintenance is a sure way to find yourself stranded on the road. Before pulling away from home, always do a light check to ensure brake, signal and clearance lights are working. Your fellow motorists, as well as traffic enforcement officers appreciate it when your lights are working. Make it a habit to check compartment/access doors/awning are secured and ready for travel. If you don’t have Maxx Air vent covers, you will want to look to see if any vent lids have been left open before hitting the road. Finally, a quick walk-around-check at every stop is recommended to keep you safely motoring. ~ Strathmore RV www.thenewsyneighbour.com

You can go to the bathroom without a support group. You don’t have to learn to spell a new last name. You can leave the motel bed unmade. You get extra credit for the slightest act of thoughtfulness. Wedding plans take care of themselves. If someone forgets to invite you to something, he or she can still be your friend. Your underwear is $10 for a three-pack. If you are 34 and single, nobody notices. You can quietly enjoy a car ride from the passenger’s seat.
You don’t have to stop and think of which way to turn a nut on a bolt. You almost never have strap problems in public. You are unable to see wrinkles in your clothes.
Three pairs of shoes are more than enough.
The same hairstyle lasts for years, maybe decades.
You don’t have to clean your apartment if the meter reader is coming.
You don’t have to shave below your neck.
Car mechanics tell you the truth. You can quietly watch a game with your buddy for hours without ever thinking: “He must be mad at me.” Gray hair and wrinkles only add character. Wedding dress - $2,000. Tuxedo rental - 75 bucks. You don’t mooch off other’s desserts. You can drop by to see a friend without having to bring a little gift. If another guy shows up at the party in the same outfit, you just might become lifelong friends. Your pals can be trusted never to trap you with: “So, notice anything different?” Your belly usually hides your big hips.

Things You Never Say to a Cop
1. Hey, you must’ve been doing about 200km/hr to keep up with me! Good job! 2. Sorry, I didn’t realize my radar detector wasn’t plugged in. 3. I thought you had to be in relatively good physical condition to be a Peace Officer. 4. “Bad Cop! No Donut!” 5. I was trying to keep up with traffic. Yes, I know there are no other cars around; that’s how far I am. 6. You’re NOT gonna check the trunk, are you? 7. Gee, officer! That’s terrific; the police officer yesterday only gave me a warning too!

403-934-5707 Sleepy Sailor
By the time the sailor pulled into a little town, every hotel room was taken. “You’ve got to have a room somewhere,” he pleaded. “Or just a bed, I don’t care where.” “Well, I do have a double room with one occupant - an Air Force guy,” admitted the manager. “And he might be glad to split the cost. But to tell you the truth, he snores so loudly that people in adjoining rooms have complained in the past. I’m not sure it’d be worth it to you.” “No problem,” the tired Navy man assured him. “I’ll take it.” The next morning the sailor came down to breakfast bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. “How’d you sleep?” asked the manager. “Never better.” The manager was impressed. “No problem with the other guy snoring?” “Nope, I shut him up in no time” said the Navy guy. “How’d you manage that?” asked the manager. “He was already in bed, snoring away, when I came in the room,” the sailor explained. “I went over, gave him a kiss on the cheek, and said, ‘Goodnight, beautiful,’ and he sat up all night watching me.” www.thenewsyneighbour.com

PASSING TIME
Three newly incarcerated convicts are discussing how they will pass their time in jail. The first one pulls out a harmonica and says “I can play all my favourite songs on this.” The second takes out a deck of cards. “I can play poker with myself with these.” The third gets out a box of tampons. “Well, it says on here that with these I can go swimming, horseback riding, cycling...”
DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH POWER YOUR TRUCK, MUSCLE CAR OR RACE CAR HAS? A chassis dynamometer, or “dyno” for short, is a treadmill for vehicles, which measures force, moment of force (torque) or power. When your car or truck is driven on the rollers, road, track or off-road, conditions can be simulated and the output and controlled loads can be measured. With the use of a dyno, a vehicle’s primary power train components, including the engine, transmission, and differential as well as vehicle components such as cooling and electrical systems, can be properly operated throughout a vehicle’s power and speed range. A vehicle in “neutral gear” at rest on the shop floor does not behave as it would “under load” on the road. It’s possible for an engine to run rich at idle and just above idle, but be dangerously lean when cruising along the road. Spark plugs, injectors, fuel pressure, carbs, fuel pumps, electronic sensors, may be fine at idle or “free revving”, but perform poorly under load. A technician can produce “hills”, “level roads” and “loads” at the flick of their fingers. If you drive your vehicle in gear and under load, you should get it tuned in gear and under load. This can only be done on a dyno. The load the dyno applies, cannot stress the engine any more, (or any less) than a hill. Deficiencies may be detected and an actual evaluation of an engine’s operating condition may be performed. There is a lot of power in small things like timing and spark. Sometimes something like timing can net another 30 horsepower. In addition, a new high performance part can also gain you more power. The dyno is the final quality test before a vehicle is put into service. Better performance equals better mileage… which results in saving you money! By Audra Blakney Muscle Motors, Strathmore

10 Rules for Dating My Daughter
Rule One: If you pull into my driveway and honk, you’d better be delivering a package, because you’re sure not picking anything up. Rule Two: You do not touch my daughter in front of me. You may glance at her, so long as you do not peer at anything below her neck. If you cannot keep your eyes or hands off of my daughter’s body, I will remove them. Rule Three: I am aware that it is considered fashionable for boys of your age to wear their trousers so loosely that they appear to be falling off their hips.I want to be fair and open minded about this issue, so I propose this compromise: you may come to the door with your underwear showing and your pants ten sizes too big, and I will not object. However, in order to ensure that your clothes do not, in fact come off during the course of your date with my daughter, I will take my electric nail gun and fasten your trousers securely in place to your waist. Rule Four: I’m sure you’ve been told that in today’s world, sex without utilizing a “barrier method of some kind can kill you. Let me elaborate, when it comes to sex, I am the barrier! Rule Five: It is usually understood that in order for us to get to know each other, we should talk about sports, politics, and other issues of the day. Please do not do this. The only information I require from you is an indication of when you expect to have my daughter safely back at my house, and the only word I need from you on this subject is: “Early. Rule Six: I have no doubt you are a popular fellow, with many opportunities to date other girls. This is fine with me as long as it is okay with my daughter. Otherwise, once you have gone out with my little girl, you will continue to date no one but her until she is finished with you. If you make her cry, I will make you cry. Rule Seven: As you stand in my front hallway, waiting for my daughter to appear, and more than an hour goes by, do not sigh and fidget. If you want to be on time for the movie, you should not be dating. My daughter is putting on her makeup, a process than can take longer than painting the Golden Gate Bridge. Instead of just standing there, why don’t you do something useful, like changing the oil in my car? Rule Eight: The following places are not appropriate for a date with my daughter: places where there are beds, sofas, or anything softer than a wooden stool. Places where there is darkness. Places where there is dancing, holding hands, or happiness. Places where the ambient temperature is warm enough to introduce my daughter to wear shorts, tank tops, midriff T-shirts, or anything other than overalls, a sweater, and a parka - zipped up to her throat. Movies with a strong romantic or sexual theme are to be avoided. Movies which feature chain saws are okay. Hockey games are okay. Old folk’s homes are better. Rule Nine: Do not lie to me. I may appear to be a potbellied, balding, middle-aged, dimwitted has-been, but on issues relating to my daughter, I am the all-knowing, merciless god of your universe. If I ask you where you are going and with whom, you have one chance to tell me the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. I have a shotgun, a shovel, and five acres behind the house. Do not trifle with me. Rule Ten: Be afraid. Be very afraid. It takes very little for me to mistake the sound of your car in the driveway for a chopper coming in Friday to Sunday, noon to 6pm over a rice paddy near Hanoi. As soon as you pull into the driveway, you should exit the car with both hands in plain sight. Speak the peHighway 817 Strathmore, AB rimeter password, announce in a clear voice that you have brought (403) 934-2749 my daughter home safely and early, and then return to your car www.fieldstonefruitwines.com there is no need for you to come inside. FAMILY PAGE - Father’s Day! In the words of Wikipedia: Father’s Day is a day to celebrate parenting, and to honour and commemorate fathers and forefathers. Father’s Day is celebrated on a variety of dates worldwide and typically involves gift-giving and special dinners dedicated to fathers - and don’t forget family-oriented activities! In recent years, retailers have adapted to the holiday by promoting greeting cards and maleoriented gifts such as electronics and tools. Schools and other children’s programs commonly have activities to make Father’s Day gifts. But, we all know that it is far more than that. We should all take the time and put in a little effort to show our dads how much we appreciate them. After all, much of who we are and what we have become is due to how we have been shaped by our fathers. It’s not about expensive gifts or extravagant gestures – most dads just like to know you love them in simple ways. Handmade crafts from the kids, or a thoughtful gesture such as cooking his favourite meal or a surprise breakfast in bed is all that it takes. Fathers are notorious for being difficult to shop for. Don’t believe me? Ask your pop what he’d like for Father’s Day this year. Odds are you’ll get an answer like, “I don’t need anything,” or, “Save your money for more important things”. That’s just the way dads are. And even though most of us will still shop around for a special gift for Father’s Day, we all know that our dads would be just as happy to hang out with us for a few hours, or maybe get together for a simple lunch or dinner date. Always practical and right to the point – it’s no wonder that fathers really are the cornerstones of our families. So, with the odds being that you’ll still get your dad a nice Father’s Day gift this year, why not combine your gift with a nice activity together? That way, you’ll feel better, knowing that you gave Dad something nice, and he’ll get what he really wants – to spend a bit of quality time with you.
1. Rent a boat and go fishing Lots of dads are big fishing enthusiasts. If your dad likes to spend the day out on the lake reeling them in, try clearing your schedule for the day, renting a boat and heading out on the water to enjoy some fun times together. Even if you don’t catch anything, you’ll both have the memory of a special Father’s Day fishing together.
2. Grill out You can probably remember lots of times over the years when your dad did the grilling for the entire family. Well, this Father’s Day you can pay him back for all those great summer time meals, by firing up your grill and having your dad over for some steaks or burgers.
3. Get some fresh air If you have fond memories of camping out or going hiking with dad, maybe the two of you could head out to a local park and do some hiking together. Times like these make for a great excuse to have some long chats, and you could even get your dad to give you some advice regarding things going on in your life. You know how fathers love to give advice, and by hitting him up for some words of wisdom, you’ll really make his day. www.thenewsyneighbour.com Page 28 The Newsy Neighbour

Is It Time to Man Up? I’ve gotten some interesting feedback lately. Specifically from a guy who feels I’m a self-important, self-absorbed egoist for having the temerity to make pronouncements on what constitutes a “real man” these days. In fairness to all concerned, this fellow hasn’t actually read my book yet (that’d be Man Up in Ten Lessons), or, as far as I know, read a blog I’ve written or a video I’ve produced. So he can’t know that my goal is to simply suggest a few ways men can go about becoming more comfortable in their own skins. Just being a man, period, would do nicely for most guys. He simply assumes, from the book’s title and cover, that I’m a pompous windbag, embarrassingly full of myself. Now I may well be a pompous windbag (God, I hope not) — but to assume there isn’t something going on with men these days, something not-so-good, to assume all’s well on the man front, is to run the risk of being laughed out of the room. Neal Gabler, writing in the Los Angeles Times (“Day of the Lout“), worries that the primary role model for young American men today is The Lout: The lout is not exactly a reversion to the old macho stereotype. He isn’t tough, muscular, steely, monosyllabic, able to build a car engine or a house single-handedly or sail around the world solo. He’s not a sophisticate either, a Dos Equis mostinteresting-man-the-world type. He doesn’t dress to the nines or know his wines or drive a Porsche, and he isn’t able to make witty cocktail party repartee. A lout is someone who is proudly stuck in a kind of adolescent parody of manhood that conflates insensitivity and machismo. “Louts luxuriate in their lack of sophistication. Louts travel in packs or just hang out with one another. Louts dress in T-shirts and jeans and eschew fashion. Louts guzzle beer rather than sip wine, and they are most likely to be spotted in bars or lounging on living room couches watching football. Louts don’t talk feelings; they talk sports and beer. Louts have few needs and no shackles. Above all, louts may ogle women and snicker Page 30
The Newsy Neighbour
about them, but women are pointedly never their top priority. At most, women are objects, just like in the old days. That’s the revenge part. Louts don’t have to make any concessions to women. Louts barely need women. Just give a lout a Bud and his buds and he’s happy.” Meanwhile, Kay Hymowitz, author of Manning Up: How the Rise of Women Has Turned Men Into Boys, describes great swaths of young North American men as “pre-adult” males, like actors in a play who only know the lines they are not to say: “[The pre-adult male] has to compete in a fierce job market, but he can’t act too bossy or self-confident. He should be sensitive but not paternalistic, smart but not cocky. To deepen his predicament, because he is single, his advisers and confidants are generally undomesticated guys just like him. “Single men have never been civilization’s most responsible actors; they continue to be more troubled and less successful than men who deliberately choose to become husbands and fathers. So we can be disgusted if some of them continue to live in rooms decorated with “Star Wars” posters and crushed beer cans and to treat women like disposable estrogen toys, but we shouldn’t be surprised. “Relatively affluent, free of family responsibilities, and entertained by an array of media devoted to his every pleasure, the single young man can live in pig heaven—and often does. Women put up with him for a while, but then in fear and disgust either give up on any idea of a husband and kids or just go to a sperm bank and get the DNA without the troublesome man. But these rational choices on the part of women only serve to legitimize men’s attachment to the sand box. Why should they grow up? No one needs them anyway. There’s nothing they have to do.” They might as well just have another beer. Clearly, I’m not making this stuff up. It’s getting confusing out there – for lots of women as well as men. Is this only an issue in big cities? Are those of you who live in rural southern Alberta reading this and asking yourselves, what planet does this guy live on? All I can say is, I live in a rural community, too, and when I speak on this subject in small towns, I get an awful lot of people (mainly women) coming up to me afterwards with some hair-raising tales. Something’s up. And it isn’t always men.

SO MANY QUESTIONS...
Today, I sent my calculus teacher a text asking if he was free tomorrow after school for extra help (he gave out his number for that very reason). I got a reply back saying ‘But if we do that, the zombies will kill us for sure.’ He quickly sent me another message saying he sent the last message to me by accident. I’ve never had so many questions.
What game are you playing? The duffer muffed his tee shot into the woods, then hit into a few trees, then proceeded to hit across the fairway into another woods. Finally, after banging away several more times, he proceeded to hit into a sand trap. All the while, he’d noticed that the club professional had been watching. “What club should I use now?” he asked the pro. “I don’t know,” the pro replied. “What game are you playing?” www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Help our friend Kathy fight the biggest battle of her life. Kathy Hadley, our friend and mother of 10, underwent aggressive chemotherapy & radiation treatments for Invasive Duct Carcinoma (Breast Cancer) in 2008-2009. Unfortunately, her cancer has metastasized into her bones, lymp nodes and lungs. Kathy has undergone 3 months of alternative therapy in Calgary with some amazing results. With your help our friend hopes to continue these treatments. These options are very costly and not covered by her insurance programs. The treatments and other cancer related expenses have created significant financial hardship on the Hadley family. Our goal is to raise enough funds to give Kathy the option of continuing these alternative treatments along with her treatments at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre.

“Your community restaurant” With a population of 15 thousand people the questions of where can we take our families to eat, often comes up. One such place that often gets missed is Bogey’s restaurant at Lakeside Golf Club. We asked Lloyd McBean, Managing Partner of Lakeside, why Bogey’s is often overlooked, (on the restaurant radar)? With a long pause he answered, “I really wish I had a better answer, but I think it still comes down to better marketing and communication. There are many hard working people with young families, who may think that Bogey’s is for the exclusive use of the members and the golfing community. Bogey’s has an open door policy toward the public and especially wants to build a local following! This has always been our biggest challenge. We need to continue to let the community know that Bogey’s welcomes the public and has great food at competitive prices.” said Lloyd. Bogey’s provides a surprisingly diverse menu offering soup, salads, appetizers, sandwiches, entrées and desserts. Bogey’s is open at 6:30 am and serves breakfast until 11am daily. Prices are very reasonable and a children’s menu is available. The atmosphere in Bogey’s is very comfortable. The views of the golf course are spectacular and the décor makes dining a casual experience with a certain refinement you would normally find at only higher end restaurants. The outdoor patio stares onto the magnificent 9th and 18th greens, where golfers are challenged to carry the large lake. Evening views offer rainbow trout breaking the water, heaters and an outdoor fireplace make cooler nights very comfortable. Bogey’s offers nightly specials to lure Chestermere residents in, such as Thursday night “Pound & Pint” which offers a pound of wings and a pint of beer for $11.95! Friday night is “Pasta Night” providing all you can eat pasta (made to order), along with 2 salads and fresh garlic bread, all for $15.95, with children’s pricing at only $7.95. Saturday night is “Bar BQ at Bogey’s” with 7 great options to pick from, bison ribs, 1/4 chicken, 8 oz. rib eye, pulled pork sandwich, buffalo burgers and Guiness bratwurst. What a great night to take the family out for a barbecue! Finally, Bogey’s Sunday Brunch, what a treat for $16.95. Enjoy the dining room setting with all the delicious items you would expect, such as eggs Benedict, carved roast beef, omelettes stations, delicious salads and much, much more! Bogey’s also offers a Happy Hour, Monday thru Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. with drink prices starting at $3.95!
If you are looking for a great place to host an office function, retirement party, anniversary or wedding function, the Dining Room at Bogey’s is the place to be! The design of the room really provides the “wow factor”. With the golf course in the background, the rock laid fireplace, dance floor, professional lighting and audio equipment you will be hard pressed to find a better venue, when accommodating groups up to 200 people. Executive Chef Bill Martin has been instrumental in the re-creation of Bogey’s. Bill’s sense of pride and determination to reach out and capture this community is really felt in the food he presents. From family style dining in the winter to barbeque in the summer, Bill’s attention to detail, food quality and consistency, will make you want to come back again and again. Martin Brice operates the front of the house and has been a member of Lakeside Golf Club for more than 20 years. Martin took over operations in August of 2011. Martin’s knowledge and long standing history made the transition seamless. Martin’s extensive food & beverage background has dramatically improved the quality of service provided at Bogey’s! The staff and management have made this restaurant a comfortable, well run operation. You can tell they want to impress the residents, they want to make you feel welcome, they want you to return and they want you to tell your neighbours about the experience you had! With all these amazing offerings, staff and great food selections it is worth giving Bogey’s a chance on your next night out. Make Bogey’s, your community restaurant!

BODY PARTS
When was the last time you actually thought about your endocrine system? No, really! You’re probably thinking to yourself, “Is she crazy? What the heck is the endocrine system anyhow?” Well, let me tell you this – it is your Pituitary, Hypothalmus, Thymus, Pineal, Thyroid, Adrenal, Parathyroid, Pancreas, Testes and the Ovaries. Whew-hoo, that’s a lot! The endocrine system is a complex group of glands that helps to control reproduction, metabolism, growth and development through substances called hormones. It also controls the way you respond to your surroundings and provides the proper amount of energy your body needs to function. Sometimes the glands of the endocrine system are impaired and can cause a hormone imbalance. This hormone imbalance (or endocrine disease/condition) can affect your health in many ways, and some endocrine system diseases/conditions are more serious than others. The endocrine system is one of the body’s main systems for communicating, controlling and coordinating the body’s work. It works with the nervous system, reproductive system, kidneys, gut, liver, pancreas and fat to help maintain and control the bodies energy levels, reproduction, growth and development, internal balance of body systems, called homeostasis, responses to surroundings and stress. The endocrine system accomplishes these tasks via a network of glands and organs that produce, store, and secrete certain types of hormones. Hormones are special chemicals that move into body fluid after they are made by one cell or a group of cells. Different types of hormones cause different effects on other cells or tissues of the body. Endocrine glands make hormones that are used inside the body. Other glands make substances like saliva, which reach the outside of the body. Endocrine glands and endocrine-related organs are like factories. They produce and store hormones and release them as needed. When the body needs these substances, the bloodstream carries the proper types of hormones to specific targets. These targets may be organs, tissues, or cells. To function normally, the body needs glands that work correctly, a blood supply that works well to move hormones through the body to their target points, receptor places on the target cells for the hormones to do their work, and a system for controlling how hormones are produced and used. What could go wrong? Endocrine system diseases and disorders happen when one or more of the endocrine systems in your body are not working well. Hormones may be released in amounts that are too great or too small for the body to work normally. These irregularities are also called a hormone imbalance. There may not be enough receptors, or binding sites, for the hormones so that they can direct the work that needs to be done. These hormone imbalances may be the result of a problem with the system regulating the hormones in the blood stream, or the body may have difficulty controlling hormone levels because of problems clearing hormones from the blood. For example, a hormone imbalance may occur if a person’s liver or kidneys are not working well, resulting in a hormone level in the bloodstream that is too high. If you or your primary care physician suspects that you have an endocrine disorder, you may need a specialist called an endocrinologist. An endocrinologist is a specially trained doctor who diagnoses and treats endocrine system diseases, which are diseases that affect your glands and hormone levels. They know how to treat conditions, which are often complex and involve many systems and structures within your body. Your regular doctor refers you to an endocrinologist when you have a problem with your endocrine system. And always remember, Health is Wealth! Kathryn Hartwell www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Staying active in the summer may seem easy but, most of us watch summer pass by while sitting in a lawn chair. Why not get up and play with the kids, have fun and get your body moving? A play ground or beach can provide the perfect opportunity to get moving and rekindle your inner child. When was the last time you tried the monkey bars or hauled water for a sand castle? Swimming, splashing, gardening or any other enjoyable activity is amazing for your mental and physical health. Picking a picnic area that you have to hike to is a great way to involve family and friends as well as creating an amazing experience. Pick an activity that is simple but fun for most age groups, this is the key to involving everyone. Playing a short game of soccer, or any out door game can liven up a BBQ and get guests out of their lawn chair. If you haven’t been active in awhile start slow to help prevent an injury. Choosing to walk, or cycle to the grocery store can be a great way to start. If you are already active on a regular basis, try something new and fun, get out of your normal. Maybe white water rafting or paddle boarding is something you’ve been dying to try....Get out there and try it! by Anndee’s Fitness Those who think they have not time for bodily exercise will sooner or later have to find time for illness. ~Edward Stanley Exercise should be regarded as tribute to the heart. ~Gene Tunney www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Why Do Men Need Care, Too? By Cynthia Barnesky
When we talk about Relaxation Massage or Reflexology Treatments, we automatically think that we are talking about women; but men need just as much care as women do. Men work hard at whatever they do, from working in the oil fields, to the corporate life or just being a Dad. They all need that extra care, looking after themselves too! There are more and more men having massage, reflexology and natural holistic treatments these days, but there are still a lot of men that are not! Here are just some quick, simple and easy ways they can do this for themselves or with some help from a family member and/or partner. Self-Massage and self-reflexology are just two great ways to help care and relax after a busy day. Just by massaging their feet, hands or shoulders before or after a bath or shower, you can help the body unwind and let go of the stress that it has built up all day. Relaxing the body, mind and soul creates a peaceful sleep, making a better morning and a healthier you! This would be a great way to help Dad or your man to unwind, so go ahead and take his feet while watching TV and just start rubbing them; he will love you for it! It does not have to be on his birthday or Father’s Day – you can do this anytime, assisting him to become a healthier and happier man. Page 36

SMOKEY JOES
Pillsbury Doughboy
It is with the saddest heart that I pass on the following. Please join me in remembering a great icon. The Pillsbury Doughboy died yesterday of a yeast infection and complications from repeated pokes in the belly. He was 71. Doughboy was buried in a lightly-greased coffin. Dozens of celebrities turned out to pay their respects, including Mrs. Butterworth, Hungry Jack, the California Raisins, Betty Crocker, the Hostess Twinkies, and Cap’n Crunch. The grave site was piled high with flours as long- time friend, Aunt Jemima, delivered the eulogy, describing Doughboy as a man who never knew how much he was kneaded. Doughboy rose quickly in show business, but his later life was filled with turnovers. He was not considered a very “smart” cookie, wasting much of his dough on half-baked schemes. Despite being a little flaky at times, he – even still, as a crusty old man - was considered a roll model for millions. Toward the end, it was thought he would rise again, but alas, he was no tart. Doughboy is survived by his wife, Play Dough; two children, John Dough and Jane Dough; plus they had one in the oven. He is also survived by his elderly father, Pop Tart. The funeral was held at 3:50 for about twenty minutes. Page 38

Calling all napkins! These are tangy, sweet, and sloppy - just the way you like them, but with a delectable hint of smokiness. 1 pound ground beef 1/2 cup chopped onion 1 clove garlic, finely chopped 1 teaspoon sweet paprika 1 teaspoon smoked paprika ¼ teaspoon chipotle powder (or 1/2 teaspoon canned chipotles) 1 cup ketchup 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 3 tablespoons brown sugar Salt to taste 4 hamburger buns In a large skillet over high heat, sauté the beef, onions, and garlic until the beef is cooked and browning, and all the liquid has boiled off (around 10 minutes). Turn the heat down to low, and then add the spices and cook, stirring, for a few seconds. Stir in the remaining ingredients, then partially cover and simmer over low heat for 30 minutes, stirring frequently to prevent scorching. Divide the mixture among the buns and serve.
OLD FASHIONED SKILLET GOULASH
This simple and old fashioned recipe is delicious and quick to make. 1 pound ground beef 2 onions, chopped 1 (10-ounce) can condensed tomato soup 2 (14-ounce) cans diced tomatoes with garlic, undrained 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar 2 teaspoons sugar 1-3 teaspoons paprika, to taste 1 teaspoon dried marjoram leaves 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon pepper 3/4 cup water 3 cups rotini pasta 1/4 cup chopped flat-leaf parsley, if desired In very large skillet, cook ground beef and onion until meat is browned and onion is tender, stirring to break up meat. Drain well. Add soup, diced tomatoes with their liquid, vinegar, sugar, paprika, marjoram, salt, pepper, and water and cook for 8-10 minutes until mixture starts to boil, stirring frequently. Add pasta and bring back to a simmer. Simmer, uncovered, stirring frequently, until pasta is tender, about 12-18 minutes. Sprinkle with fresh parsley, if using, and serve. www.thenewsyneighbour.com
Husband banned from Wal-Mart After I retired, my wife insisted that I accompany her on her trips to Wal-Mart. Unfortunately, like most men, I found shopping boring and preferred to get in and get out. Equally unfortunate, my wife is like most women - she loves to browse. Yesterday my dear wife received the following letter from our local Wal-Mart. Dear Mrs. Samsel, Over the past six months, your husband has caused quite a commotion in our store. We cannot tolerate this behaviour and have been forced to ban both of you from the store. Our complaints against your husband, Mr. Samsel, are listed below and are documented by our video surveillance cameras. 1. June 15: Took 24 boxes of condoms and randomly put them in other people’s carts when they weren’t looking. 2. July 2: Set all the alarm clocks in the housewares department to go off at 5-minute intervals. 3. July 7: He made a trail of tomato juice on the floor leading to the women’s restroom. 4. July 19: Walked up to an employee and told her in an official voice, ‘Code 3 in Housewares. Get on it right away’. This caused the employee to leave her assigned station and receive a reprimand from her Supervisor that in turn resulted with a union grievance, causing management to lose time and costing the company money. 5. August 4: Went to the Service Desk and tried to put a bag of M&Ms on layaway. 6. August 14: Moved a ‘CAUTION - WET FLOOR’ sign to a carpeted area. 7. August 15: Set up a tent in the camping department and told the children shoppers he would invite them in if they would bring pillows and blankets from the bedding department to which twenty children obliged. 8. August 23: When a clerk asked if they could help him, he began crying and screamed, ‘Why can’t you people just leave me alone?’ EMTs were called. 9. September 4: Looked right into the security camera and used it as a mirror while he picked his nose. 10. September 10: While handling guns in the hunting department, he asked the clerk where the antidepressants were. 11. October 3: Darted around the store suspiciously while loudly humming the ‘Mission Impossible’ theme. 12. October 6: In the auto department, he practiced his ‘Madonna look’ by using different sizes of funnels. 13. October 18: Hid in a clothing rack and when people browsed through, yelled ‘PICK ME! PICK ME!’ 14. October 21: When an announcement came over the loud speaker, he assumed a fetal position and screamed ‘OH NO! IT’S THOSE VOICES AGAIN!’ And last, but not least: 15. October 23: Went into a fitting room, shut the door, waited awhile, and then yelled very loudly, ‘Hey! There’s no toilet paper in here.’ One of the clerks passed out. Sincerely, Management www.thenewsyneighbour.com

This is the fifth in a series of articles on child development written to help parents and caregivers recognize and understand the ages and stages of a child’s physical, emotional, social and intellectual development during the first five years. These are only guidelines as every child is unique with their own personality, learning style and family background. There are, however, some general similarities that can help you recognize the stages of development and offer a nurturing environment where your child may develop to their full potential. Kidz 1st Network Parent Link Centre also offers developmental screening so that you can monitor and celebrate your child’s progress or access information for early intervention when this seems appropriate. The first half of your baby’s second year of life sees her becoming more independent, continually exploring her world and beginning to assert her independence. You will be amazed at how rapidly your baby is developing. The following guidelines cover a period of five months. It is important to remember that some babies will reach these developmental stages early in this period and some may reach them two or three months later. Emotionally, baby is showing a full range of feelings from sad to happy to angry to scared, and he is beginning to learn how to deal with these feelings. He is becoming more confident and will try new things, especially with your support. He enjoys being the centre of attention and will repeat an action that has made you laugh. Baby shows a specific interest in special books, music and activities. He will enjoy reading the same book or playing the same finger play game over and over again. Physically, baby is mastering the use of her small muscles and becoming more adept at manipulating small objects. She enjoys feeding herself and is able to pick up small finger foods easily. She can stack two or more blocks and turns the pages of her books. Scribbling with a large crayon and turning containers upPage 40
The Newsy Neighbour
side down to dump them are also on her list of accomplishments. She is gaining better balance and will master walking soon and crawling up stairs during this time. She loves to climb up on things such as chairs and sofas or climb out of things like cribs and high chairs so be sure baby is closely supervised at all times. Baby will squat to pick up a toy and pushes or pulls toys while walking. Intellectually, baby is developing language to the point where she will point to something she wants to show you and she uses connected sounds that sound like little stories when she talks. She uses ‘no’ correctly and will have five or more words she uses to express herself. She can point to different body parts and enjoys making the sounds of animals or other things. Baby shows her thinking skills by having an understanding of color and shapes, identifying pictures when asked a question such as “Where’s the cat?” and filling and emptying containers of sand, water or smaller toys. She exhibits memory skills by such activities as trying to insert a key in a lock, turning a screwdriver as she’s seen an adult do and knowing that it’s bath time when she hears water running in the tub. Socially, baby is learning to make friends and get along with others but he plays best on his own. He doesn’t want to share and if he offers a toy to a playmate he will want the toy back and will probably want whatever his playmate has as well. He enjoys imitating adult tasks such as sweeping, planting and fixing things. Baby will test the limits you set for him as he develops his independence. Comfort, play with and teach your child by providing the appropriate motor and sensory stimulation. Encourage your baby’s exploration and give him many opportunities to be successful in his play. Explore his feelings using toys, songs, and stories which express emotion. Making sad, happy, silly, and scary faces in the mirror and talking about feelings will help your baby develop an understanding of his emotions. Spend time outside, going for walks or playing at a park. This will help build strength and motor skills and may offer opportunities for your baby to meet friends. Play time does not have to involve expensive toys. Often a child shows more interest in the box than in what came out of the box! Set up an obstacle course using pillows to crawl over, boxes to crawl through and chairs to crawl under. Cut a hole in the lid of a large plastic container so baby can put smaller toys through the hole, take off the lid, dump the toys and start again. Musical instruments may be made from many kitchen items. Give baby a pot and a wooden spoon, put on some music and sing along. Offer opportunities for pretend play which will help baby make sense of his real world. Dolls or stuffed animals along with a bottle, blanket and a bed helps your baby develop feelings of empathy and caring. Baby can also begin to help with clean up time. Use a large container so he can easily place his toys in it, giving him feelings of success and accomplishment. Encourage your baby to do as much as possible for himself, have the patience to wait for him to figure things out and be prepared for messes – that’s all a part of learning! www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Inspire your children. After all, once a moment is gone, you will never get it back; which is true for everything in life. But if you are a parent, you should take advantage of every single moment with your child. Perhaps no aspect of child development is as miraculous and transformative as the development of a child’s brain. Brain development allows a child to develop the abilities to crawl, speak, eat, laugh and walk. A number of factors influence early brain development. These important factors include genetics, food and nutrition, responsiveness of parents, daily experiences, physical activity and love. In particular, parents should be aware of the importance of furnishing a healthy and nutritious diet, giving love and nurturing, providing interesting and varied everyday experiences, and giving children positive and sensitive feedback. In the past, some scientists thought the brain’s development was determined genetically and brain growth followed a biologically predetermined path. Now we know that early experiences impact the development of the brain and influence the specific way in which the circuits (or pathways) of the brain become “wired.” A baby’s brain is a work in progress. The outside world shapes its development through experiences that a child’s senses — vision, hearing, smell, touch and taste — absorb. For example: • The scent of the mother’s skin (smell) • The father’s voice (hearing) • Seeing a face or brightly coloured toy (vision) • The feel of a hand gently The Newsy Neighbour

An infant’s mind is primed for learning, but it needs early experiences to wire the neural circuits of the brain that facilitate learning. We are born with as many nerve cells as stars in the Milky Way galaxy. But these cells have not yet established a pattern of wiring between them — they haven’t made their connections. What the brain has done is to lay out circuits that are its best guess about what is required for vision, language, etc. Circuits are made into patterns that enable newborn infants to perceive their mother’s touch, their father’s voice and other aspects of their environment. We are born with more than 100 billion brain cells or neurons; we will not grow more. That’s about 10 times the number of stars in the entire Milky Way, and about 20 times the number of people on the planet. Neurons are the functioning core of the brain. Each cell body is about one-hundredth the size of the period at the end of this sentence. A neuron has branches or dendrites emerging from the cell body. These connections are miracles of the human body. But to understand their power, you have to multiply this miracle by trillions. A single cell can connect with as many as 15,000 other cells. This incredibly complex network of connections is referred to as the brain’s “circuitry” or “wiring.” A remarkable increase in synapses occurs during the first year of life. The brain develops a functional architecture through the development of these synapses or connections. For example, if a parent repeatedly calls a child a certain name, then connections will form that allow the child to recognize that name over time as referring to him and he will learn to respond. From birth, the brain rapidly is creating these connections that form our habits, thoughts, consciousness, memories and mind. By the time a child is 3 years old, a baby’s brain has formed about 1,000 trillion connections — about twice as many as adults have. A baby’s brain is super dense and will stay that way throughout the first decade of life. The interactions that parents assist with in a child’s environment are what spur the growth and pattern of these connections in the brain. The development of a child’s brain holds the key to the child’s future. Although the “first years last forever” in terms of the rapid development of young children’s brains, the actual first years of a child’s life go by very quickly. So touch, talk, read, smile, sing, count and play with your children. It does more than make both of you feel good. It helps a child’s brain develop and nourishes the child’s potential for a lifetime. By: Kathryn Hartwell Reference: www.ag.ndsu.edu

Gemini. May 21 - June 20 Flexibility, balance and adaptability are the keywords for the Gemini. They are quick to grasp the meaning of a situation. They tend to have a duality to their nature, and can sometimes be tough to predict how they will react. They can turn from hot to cold and may be prone to noticeable mood swings. However, they are generous signs with tendencies of being affectionate. They also inspire others easily as they seem to naturally motivate themselves – their charisma and accomplishments are infectious. Geminians are very supportive, and are especially good at promotions, sales, and driving hard bargains.
Cancer. June 21 – July 22
www.thenewsyneighbour.com
Cancerians love home-life, family and domestic settings. They are traditionalists, and enjoy operating on a fundamental level. They love history, and are fascinated with the beginnings of things (heraldry, ancestry, etc.). The moon is their ruler, so they can be a bit of a contradiction and sometimes moody. However, they are conservative, so they’ll be apt to hide their moods from others altogether. They have a reputation for being fickle, but they’ll tell you that isn’t true, and it’s not. Cancerians make loyal, sympathetic friends. However Cancerians need alone time, and when they retreat, let them do so on their terms.

I AM A... CABBAGE Hello there, my name is Casper Cabbage. I’ll bet you didn’t know that our word “coleslaw” came from the German words for cabbage (kohl) and salad (salat)? Interesting, nicht wahr? I’m not quite sure why, but we’re particularly popular in Central and Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and India. It may be because it takes only three months of growing time to raise a nice crop of cabbage – one acre of cabbage yields more edible vegetables than any other plant. The noble cabbage is related to a number of other vegetables, including Brussels sprouts, broccoli, kale, kohlrabi, and cauliflower. We’re a staple in the popular Eastern European soup called borscht. Cabbage rolls are very popular in both Eastern Europe and the Middle East. The most stupendous recorded cabbage was raised by a English farmer named William Collingwood, in 1865. His prized cabbage tipped the scales at an impressive 123 pounds. The biggest cabbage dish ever made was in 2008 in the Macedonian city of Prilep, consisting of 80,191 cabbage rolls weighing 544 kg (1,221 lbs). That, my friend, is a lot of cabbage!

The
History Like many of my vegetable friends, my roots (no pun intended, really) go back to the Mediterranean region, where my earliest relatives were wild mustard plants, also called sea cabbage and wild cabbage. Cabbage has been cultivated for more than 4,000 years, and domesticated for over 2,500 years. We were apparently introduced to Europe by the early Celts, and were well known to the ancient Greeks, and after them, the Romans. Cato the Elder praised us for our medicinal properties, stating “it is the cabbage that surpasses all other vegetables.” Hey, the man was a genius, who are we to doubt him? Over the centuries we spread across Europe. Invading Turks introduced pickled cabbage to Poland and Hungary during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Because we grow well in cool climates (ever been to Ireland in February?) and store well during winter, we soon became a major European crop. French explorer Jacques Cartier brought us to the New World in 1536. We’re often found in dishes that have gained quite a reputation – for example, in Germany, cabbage is the basis for that key Rueben sandwich ingredient, sauerkraut. Did you know sauerkraut likely got its start courtesy of the Celts? Or that in the sixteenth century, Dutch sailors chowed down on sauerkraut during extended voyages to prevent scurvy? Similarly pickled cabbage is used to make suan cai in China, and kimchi in Korea. Cato, it would appear, was right – we really do surpass all other vegetables!
Health I’m delighted to report that few vegetables have more healing properties than we do. In fact in the Middle Ages, the cabbage was referred to as “the drug of the poor.” Like broccoli, we contain something called indole-3-carbinol, a chemical that boosts DNA repair in cells and may block the growth of cancer cells. Studies have indicated we can be particularly helpful in reducing the risk of colon cancer, thanks largely to our high dietary fiber content and a range of helpful chemicals that inhibit tumor growth and protect cells against free radicals. Some of these same chemicals may also help speed up the body’s metabolism of estrogen, in the process potentially reducing the incidence of ovarian, breast, uterine, and ovarian cancers. Three to five one-cup servings of cabbage a week provide excellent cancer-preventing nutrition. We also have lots of vitamin C, and contain significant amounts of glutamine, an amino acid with anti-inflammatory properties, as well as beta-carotene (an excellent cataract fighter). When eaten raw, we’re an excellent source of folic acid, which among other things can help lower the risk of having babies with Spina bifida. We can play a role in helping reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, alleviating rheumatism and tackling skin problems. Juiced cabbage (come on, shake things up – you don’t have to drink orange juice with every breakfast!) even promotes the healing of some ulcers. And for those of you who are dieters, are we ever the right vegetable for you, given our generally low calorie count – go ahead, have another helping of coleslaw prepared with low-fat mayo! A couple of warnings when it comes to cabbage preparation and consumption: when we’re overcooked, two bad things happen. First, boiling reduces our anti-cancer properties. And secondly, boiled cabbage is, well, smelly! So for both reasons, if you must cook us, slice us thinly and cook us for no more than four minutes. And for those of you with thyroid disorders, please be aware that we generally reduce the body’s absorption of iodine. Adding a few caraway, cumin, or fennel seeds to a cabbage dish before cooking will make us way easier to digest, and will help with the lingering aroma of boiled cabbage not everyone (amazingly enough) is particularly fond of. In fact we can be enjoyed any number of ways, from raw to steamed, in dishes that range from sauerkraut to soups. Speaking of cooking, I hope you’ll try some of the cabbage-friendly recipes here – you’ll be glad you did! Yours in good health, Casper Cabbage

ORDER FORM ON PAGE 60 A well-known remedy for healing peptic ulcers is drinking cabbage juice. A medical study at Stanford University’s School of Medicine gave thirteen ulcer patients five doses a day of cabbage juice. All were healed within seven to ten days, apparently thanks to the vitamin U contained in cabbage juice. Researchers have learned that foods in the cabbage family can inhibit the growth of breast, stomach, and colon cancers, thanks to phytochemicals called indoles. These indoles tend to burn up the female hormone, estrogen. Indoles also tend to ward off cell changes that can lead to colon cancer. In its raw state, cabbage contains iron, calcium, and potassium. High marks are given for its vitamin C content. Cabbage is also high in vitamins B1, B2, and B3. Lengthy cooking tends to lower its nutritional value considerably. The cabbage was revered by the ancient Greeks for its many medicinal properties. Pickling is an excellent way to preserve the vitamin C in cabbage. In fact, Captain Cook attributed his crew’s good health to a daily ration of sauerkraut

put where. Now is a good time to take a look and see if you want to move any plants or add some new plants. It is important to have pockets of colour coming up all through the season. Make sure when you are planning your garden that you put plants in for each season, in various parts of the yard. This will give you something of interest all year round. Most important to think about is winter; it can be a long, cold, bleak season. It is nice to have plants in the garden for winter interest. Mother Nature loves to look good no matter what season it is. As you go through your closet in spring and fall remember Mother Nature and help her go through her closet, thin out what does not “fit” anymore, and spruce up her “wardrobe” with new plants and colours, and amend the soil. She appreciates the help. Maureen Macdonald
Mother Nature’s Closet This is one of my favorite times of the year, Mother Nature is waking up. The new plants are coming in and filling up my greenhouse. When I open the door to the greenhouse the smell is incredible. I love to see all the baby plants. When I look outside I see the beginnings of new life everywhere. It starts off slow, as Mother Nature goes through her closet. First she is deciding what to keep and what to throw out. She picks out her prettiest greens; the land gets green peach fuzz as the rain turns the brown landscape grass green. Next you see the trees and bushes start to bud. Little green dots appear everywhere. Mother Nature is shaking out her “clothes “getting ready for all the activities that summer brings. This is the time when she decides what to keep and what to get rid of. Any shrubs that do not “fit”, they did not survive the winter will get thrown out, or die off. The weaker trees die off; some perennials may not make it. Sometimes Mother Nature can be brutal, it is only because she wants the strongest and prettiest plants in her closet. Mother Nature is formidable and only wants to be seen in her finest plants, her brightest colours, and her frilliest flowers. This is where we can help her to decide. We can amend the soil by working peat moss and sand in where needed, compost if you can, any organic matter is good. Help her by trimming the trees and shrubs that need it, this will encourage new growth. This is a good time to check the health of the plant and shape it as well. Earlier in the year we planned the gardens, what plants to put where. Page 46

A few I pick for their feel - I like to touch them, like snap dragons (they can talk), or lamb’s ears they feel so fuzzy, etc. You know what I’m saying; we all have special plants that we like. Some I plant to draw in the birds or butterflies. Plant things that you like that make you want to stay in your garden. I have watched a bumble bee wake up on the head of alliums. I can tell you all kinds of stories about garden life. I think gardens are wonderful, magical places, filled with all kinds of great stories. After a hectic week at work, fighting traffic and meeting deadlines it is nice to have a place to retreat for a couple of hours, filled with wonderful sights and smells. Learn to relax and enjoy the beauty in your own yard. As you work in your garden week after week you will notice when and where the flowers come up. Already you will be thinking next year I will move this plant over here and I will put that plant over by the other one that blooms a little later. You might also be thinking of colour and where you would like to see more or different colour. Gardening is a great hobby. Do as much or as little as you need to feel “right” with the world. What you do in life - at work and home is important. To be able to de-stress and relax makes it easier to move through the world touching all the lives we do in a daily basis. THE HISTORY OF COMMERCIAL DOG FOOD I remember while growing up, every single dog we ever owned was fed left-over’s and scraps from the kitchen table. I don’t remember my parents ever buying dog food and now they say, “Oh – no, don’t ever feed your dog scraps from the table – that’s very bad!” Well, much to the surprise of many dog owners, commercial dog food has only been in existence a relatively short time, by comparison to the length of time that dogs have been considered companion animals. Before commercial dog food existed, many dog owners fed their dogs table scraps, most commonly know to us a “leftovers”. Some dogs were fed meat scraps from the butcher because it was considered unusable for human consumption. Farm dogs were treated to raw meat, raw milk, and eggs. Dogs of the wealthy were reportedly prepared higher quality meals, including seasonings. In 1860, James Spratt of Cincinnati, Ohio noticed that stray dogs were eating hardtack, a biscuit produced from combining flour, water and salt, discarded by sailors while in port. He was then inspired to create the first processed dog food by mixing wheat, beetroot, vegetables and beef blood. He named this new product Spratts Meat Fibrine Dog Cakes. Naturally, others jumped on the bandwagon. Some companies claimed that their product was a cure for worms and some diseases. Other companies were offered paid endorsements from veterinarians. Even in its inception, controversy surrounded dog nutrition. Prompted by the Great Depression in the 1930s, dog owners sought less expensive ways to feed their companions. Less raw meat was fed and cereals and grains filled their bowls instead. In the 1940s, canned dog food was introduced, as well as a dehydrated product that included the instructions, “just add water”. As debates surrounded product superiority, numerous marketers of the new dog food stated that their products were better quality because they made use of grain hulls and nonhuman grade meats. It was also stated by using a processed dog food, instead of fresh meat, that the dogs were less likely to be finicky. Even though fresh meat and vegetables were considered superior, the processed food was much more economical. Post World War II saw sales boom in dry, processed dog food. Grain dealers and mill operators found a good source for by-products. At this point in time, there were no regulations on dog food. Consequently, slaughterhouses supplied non-human grade meats, diseased meats and unusable parts to dog food manufacturers. The use of these products created a market. This waste was mixed with grains and heated for several hours or days to kill bacteria and disease. The mix was formed into pellets, packaged and sold in bags. The 1950s brought a considerable change. The Purina Company is responsible for developing an innovative concept for dry dog food. Formerly, there were just two types of dry dog food, pellets and kibble. Purina developed a new technique called extrusion. This is a process by which all the ingredients are combined and cooked to create liquid form. The liquid is mechanically pushed through the extruder, which expands the food and then bakes it. The extruder expands the liquid into larger pieces than the original pellets, therefore creating a “more for your money” marketing ploy. In 1969, Dr. Kronfeld from the University of Pennsylvania stated in the American Veterinary Medical Aswww.thenewsyneighbour.com

sociation that all-meat dog foods are incomplete. He reported that dogs need a fortified diet that includes carbohydrates. He maintained that too much protein was unhealthy for dogs. Convenience was the most significant motivation for dog owners to purchase prepared and packaged dog food. Promoting the bags as complete nutrition was also a contributing factor as to the widespread popularity of prepared dog food. The fact that all one needed to do to ensure complete nutrition for their companion was to pour dry dog food into a bowl was a very attractive inducement, as well. A campaign was created in 1964, through the Pet Food Institute, to inform the public of the dangers of feeding dogs table scraps. This information was achieved through press releases to one thousand newspapers and sixteen magazine articles and almost one hundred radio stations. Celebrities in television spots began endorsing dog food. Ads started to appear in the media. Signs were also created to illustrate the idea of a delicious, healthy meal for Fido. As the marketing tactics were beginning to pay off, dog food moved from feed stores to the grocery shelves. It was then the dog food companies embarked on fierce competition with one another. Dr. Mark Morris DVM, founder of Hill’s Science Diet products, is responsible for manufacturing the first specialty dog food diet. It was formulated for kidney and heart disease. These products were available by prescription only and were offered exclusively at the veterinarian’s office. Purina was the next pet food company to develop specialty food that addressed certain conditions that affected man’s best friend. Until 1974, the National Research Council (NCR) regulated the protocol nutritional values required for pet www.thenewsyneighbour.com
food. That year a new organization was formed: American Association of Feed Control officials (AAFCO). This organization was formed by the pet food industry and changed the standards of the NCR testing procedures. AAFCO extended feeding trials of the dog food over a period of time to the testing of chemical analysis. Although this offered results for the percentages and breakdowns, it did not address the issue of the type of food used, i.e. freshness, digestibility of the ingredients. This left the dog food industry to regulate itself without government intervention forcing the NCR to update their guidelines in 1985. The next movement in commercial pet food was towards premium dog foods. These foods were developed to address better nutrition and to target all stages of life, including, but not limited to, puppies, weight management, performance and senior dogs. With good reason, this new category confused the public. Although these foods were advertised to be “premium,” the 1974 NCR standards were still in use. So there you have it! I don’t know, but I feed my dog’s table scraps all the time and they seem quite healthy and content. I guess old habits die hard and all my childhood pets lived long and healthy lives. I will continue to feed my own animals “table scraps,” even though my children say I am being bad. Sleep – Perchance to snore (apologies to the ‘bard)
Diet and exercise, diet and exercise, etc, etc. We constantly hear about their importance. Even though the marketing agenda of those promoting diet and exercise may at times be suspect, they are important. There is something equally as important – yes, the clue is in the title… We can live 10 days without food. (Don’t) Try living 10 days without any sleep. Poor or interrupted sleep occurs to almost everyone at some times in their lives. While the reasons are varied, generally it is a short-term issue. Prolonged sleep problems are a serious health & safety issue. Everything from diabetes to chronic pain, reduced immune system response and greatly increased chances of accidental injury all can be linked to lack of sleep. Credible and peer-reviewed studies have consistently determined issues derived from a lack of proper sleep. Sleep deprivation is the subject of intense research and it is interesting that techniques have been developed to the point where a complete mental & physical breakdown can actually be induced by denying sleep. (OK – the term ‘interesting’ was used instead of the vastly over abused media term ‘disturbing’ - someday the sports writer’s will share their thesaurus with the news/marketing side.) How much sleep? 7 to 8 hours a night of proper sleep (not drug assisted) is recommended. FYI: 4 hours comatose is not the same as a good 8 hours. An issue arises if you are getting a reasonable sleep time and are still waking up frequently during the night or tired in the morning. Stiff or sore muscles that ‘loosen up’ as the morning goes on? Neck pain? Takes a long time to get to sleep? 15 minutes to fall asleep seems to be a suggested time frame – too quick means too tired and too long can be other issues. There are many causes for continuing poor sleep, stiffness and sore points. Some are medical in origin and it is important to consult a medical professional about these concerns. If there is no medical condition found, the solution may lay elsewhere. High on the culprit list is that place you spend up to a third of your life - your mattress. There is a tremendous amount of study that goes into mattress development and sleep. Some of the primary objectives of mattress construction are to evenly support the body, especially the spine; not allow pressure points to develop and maintain this quality over the life span of the mattress (about 10 years). These qualities assist us in maintaining normal sleep cycles while reducing the tendency to move about to relieve pressure points. Other areas such as the mattress cover (ticking) material can have an effect although fancy colours or design seem kind of pointless for something you cover all the time. Sleep is a huge industry. Manufacturers are very conscious of the mattress and bedding sector with substantial marketing effort going into it. Some of it is unadulterated hype and some is the product of actual credible research and product quality. It is very difficult to assess the quality of a medium or even expensive mattress set by simply looking or even laying down on it. The mattress world is one of those where while you do get what you pay for, price is not a guarantee of quality and long term service. Talk with your independent mattress retailer on sleep, mattress qualities and designs that will actually work for you. As always – be an aware and wary consumer. Dear Lifelines, Lately I feel conflicted a lot. How can I make things better? My life seems upside down and I don’t see an end to it. Signed, Topsy Turvey Dear Topsy, I’m sorry to hear that life has been a challenge for you lately. I’ve heard it said that in order to appreciate the good times, it helps to have experienced particularly low times. The lower we get, the more we can appreciate and savour those less challenging times. But that kind of thinking likely doesn’t do much for you right now. When we live our lives in ways that don’t reflect our personal values, it can lead very quickly to conflicted feelings, selfdoubt, anxiety and depression. If this lack of alignment continues over a prolonged period of time, there might also be a breakdown in relationships, challenges at work and problems with sleep along with all sorts of personal health issues like weight loss, weight gain, skin problems, headaches and digestive issues. One way to attempt to better sort out your life and your goals and intentions is to create a list of your life values. You can create a list by prioritizing not only what characteristics are important in your life, but by outlining specific details about what exactly you want to accomplish in your life (we’ll go into this in more detail next issue). Here is a short list of some values – you can do a Google search and find hundreds more if you want to get more detailed and specific.
1. Relationships 2. Success 3. Compassion 4. Spirituality 5. Fun 6. Adventure 7. Wealth 8. Learning 9. Family 10. Career 11. Health 12. Peace Once you have created a random list of your areas of priority, you can number them in order of importance. To see how your shift in feeling can change quite dramatically through this process of ordering the values, try reversing the list. For example, if you take five values from above in order of preference from most important to least important (Family, Relationships, Fun, Compassion, Career, Wealth) and reverse the order (Wealth, Career, Fun, Relationships, Family) notice how the shift changes and how your internal comfort level shifts when you reverse your priorities and think about how that would change the focus and balance of your current life situation. It’s that internal comfort level that you need to acknowledge in order to help alleviate the topsy turvey feeling. Use that feeling as a barometer in steering you to areas of your life that you have not been paying attention to and, in turn, have been suffering because of this lack of attention. It’s alright for values to shift over time and that is to be expected. Through the very nature of life and transition it is essential to expect some change in priorities, beliefs and values throughout even a year of life. Because of this need to adapt and flex with the complexities of our lives and changes in circumstance, it’s a good idea to periodically re-evaluate your values and re-prioritize them. Next month we can visit how values can be used to further improve the quality of your life and help you attain greater balance. For now you can get started on creating your values list – shoot for 5-10 values or so, but go for the gusto if you want to do more! Sincerely, Lifelines

Monthly Book Review by Derek Donais My review column is in its second year with the Newsy Neighbour. Please continue to join me each month as I explore a new read. I’ve had the opportunity to review worthwhile books by many local or regional Canadian authors, as well as some great international works. As always, my passions are fantasy and sciencefiction, but I am always on the lookout for more non-fiction, especially from local writers. I hope to build on the many bright spots and successes of 2011. MetalMagic: Talisman, the revised Canadian edition, was released in November, 2011 and I’m happy to announce that the sequel, MetalMagic: Revelation, should be available sometime in February, 2012. Thanks to all those who’ve supported the Newsy Neighbour and read my reviews over the last little while—and here’s to another year filled with promise! Yours in Truth, Derek Donais
The Coming Jobs War Jim Clifton Gallup Press, 2011 ISBN: 9781595620552
This month’s review is of The Coming Jobs War by Jim Clifton. Clifton is the current chairman of Gallup, the world-renowned polling and research firm. His main argument is that most, if not all, current world leaders have no idea how to begin fighting the next world war. That’s because it’s not going to be a conventional war: this war will be for economic survival. It will be waged at the local level—city by city—and whichever country has the most cities that are able to attract the greatest number of talented and creative workers will win. It’s at the local level that the true entrepreneurial spirit can thrive, where investors, mentors, entrepreneurs and academics can foster the best conditions for the creation of jobs. And it is the creation of new, good jobs that will determine the winners in this new economic reality by expanding the GDP, or gross domestic product, of the home country. Clifton uses San Francisco and Detroit as examples of the potential for both positive and negative job creation in cities. San Francisco, as the gateway to Silicon Valley, has thrived with entrepreneurial and creative spirit, leading the charge in the information age. Detroit, however, once the world leader in automobile industry, fell victim to the lack of foresight and complacency that came to dominate America’s thinking. One city excelled at creating good, new jobs and one didn’t. The world’s entrepreneurial leaders—because political leaders can’t make the hard choices they need to and be successful—must step in and take the reins. Classical economics, the traditional method economic decisions are based on, must also give way to behavioral economics. This is the strength of Gallup’s research, Clifton claims, because its questions are geared toward individual behavior that leads to economic choices instead of attempting to analyze events after the choices are made. The key is the individual and only behavioural economics can understand the individual dynamic: “Individuals are the global economy... all the decisions and choices—yours and mine and everyone else’s—are the economy. An economy rises and falls on people’s combined consciousness. America’s economic future isn’t huge and vague; it starts with every individual.” Clifton points to Gallup’s extensive and in-depth polling of individuals at the global level for these insights. The World Poll—beginning in 2005 and questioning people worldwide about what they wanted most—suggests that seven billion people believe the prospect of a good job is the most important. That belief powers what Clifton calls GNW, or gross national wellbeing. It’s this GNW that in turn determines a country’s financial bottom line, or GDP. The United States, Clifton points out, emerged from World War II as the leading global economic powerhouse, which not only ensured that it survived but led the global marketplace. However, Clifton claims that if America doesn’t right itself and address a number of internal issues, it will be overtaken before the year 2040 by China—where the economy is growing by ten percent per year. Without the hope of a good job in your country’s cities, people will go elsewhere. And a new world economic power will replace the current leader. Again, Clifton says that this book is applicable to all nations of the world and will help any country to be economically competitive in the future. If you can get past the clear call to arms that Clifton is sending to America, Gallup has provided some interesting observations and conclusions to ponder.
“When and if that happens, America loses. The world changes. Everything changes. China may dominate the world. But it won’t have to use its military.”—Jim Clifton, Chairman and CEO of Gallup Page 52

How to create your perfect shower From an invigorating spray that kick-starts the morning to an enveloping waterfall that washes away a long day, today’s showers offer luxurious experiences to meet every desire. With a little planning and the right products, you can create a personal oasis. Even small choices, like showerheads and accessories, can instantly upgrade any bathroom. Showerheads have become increasingly sophisticated. Whether it’s water conservation, functionality or a spalike experience that is your priority, you can easily customize the experience by mixing and matching different accessories and sprays. A green stream: For homeowners looking to conserve water, new showerhead technology is offering a variety of efficient water flows without sacrificing performance. Creating a luxurious spray no longer translates into wasted water. It’s now possible to save water and energy without sacrificing your shower experience, but you do need to do your homework. Not all efficient showerheads have the technology needed to deliver on performance. It’s recommended to pressure-equalize showerheads and novel spray patterns, each of which can provide optimal performance at flow rates up to 40 percent lower than the 2.5 gallon-per-minute federal mandate. More flexible flow: When functionality is top of mind, handheld showerheads with slide bar mounting systems on the wall offer a great solution as they cater to a variety of needs. Slide bar shower systems are a versatile Page 54

option for any homeowner because the spray direction is so easy to manipulate. You not only have the ability to pair a wide variety of handheld showerheads with them, but they also cater to diverse heights and accommodate physical limitations. Often paired with a wall or ceiling mounted showerhead, handheld showers are particularly useful when washing your hair, rinsing off legs, bathing children or even cleaning the shower. The H2Oasis: If you’re hoping to create a spa-like experience, today’s custom shower systems often combine wall-mounted body sprays, handheld sprayers and high-performance showerheads to transform the shower into a relaxing getaway. For those days when you want to escape and truly wash it all away, custom systems are the ideal shower solution. Adjustable, wall-mounted body sprays added to a shower allow you to direct the water flow in your preferred position to complement the other elements of your shower. Many custom systems offer a variety of styles and finishes that also coordinate with bathroom faucets and accessories to create a cohesive decor. You will be able to find exactly what you are looking for with just a bit of pre-shopping research. The options these days are endless.
