We believe in building homes that are handed down from one generation to the next. It’s why we design sophisticated, livable interior spaces, adorn them with dramatic, timeless exteriors, and craft each and every one with cutting-edge materials and technologies.
Because if it’s not a home you can be proud of for years to come, it’s not worth building in the first place. Accept nothing less.

Veterans Associations in Canada Dear Sir or Madam; In order to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the allied Landings in Normandy and Provence, France we sought to honour some of the Canadian veterans who took part in this combat and the liberation of France. 659 veterans were therefore awarded the Legion of Honour, France’s highest distinction, in 2014. This campaign, which closed on December 31, 2014, was an indisputable success. Since then, a number of veterans, having only learned of this campaign through media coverage of decoration ceremonies, have contact the Embassy of France and the Canadian Department of Veterans Affairs. The French government has therefore decided to extend the deadline of this campaign, one last time, to July 31, 2015 (deadline for reception of dossiers at the Embassy). It is for this reason that I would be grateful once more for your assistance in finding eligible veterans who had not applied in 2014.

Make sure you share this Issue with the man in your life, make him sit down and actually read through the magazine, I know it may be a chore but he will be glad you did, seriously, trust me on this, by far the best Men’s Issue we have ever published. It seems people’s lives have either become far too busy or people are becoming too complacent when it comes to helping others, a sad situation either way. Can you imagine the thought that Langdon Day’s is under the threat of being cancelled as a result of people in the community unwilling to help out? I find it very hard to believe and I’m sure it’s because they just don’t know – we are

My Favourite, Fabulous, Fantastic and Fun Stuff
SHOULD MEN BE JUICING?
M
Men need more calories in a day than woman do, so sceptics wonder whether men should be juicing.
It seems there are some very common juicing mistakes people are making: fresh juice should only be consumed on an empty stomach. The whole point of drinking juice is diminished if you don’t, and can end up giving you digestive issues. Drinking juice on an empty stomach allows the vitamins and minerals in the juice to go straight to your bloodstream. Having fibre or a meal already in your stomach prevents your body from quickly absorbing the nutrients from the juice. A good general rule of thumb to follow is to wait at least 2 hours after a meal to drink a juice and wait 20 minutes after drinking a juice to consume a meal.
My answer to that is: of course men should juice! They can juice in the morning and for lunch and dinner they can get the necessary protein they require in their diets. After years of juicing, I finally convinced my husband to start juicing with me in the morning and guess what happened? He started to lose weight, because he was not eating the same amount of protein he use too. Yes, your body needs protein every day, so all that is required is to add protein powder to your juice. The goal should be losing fat weight, not muscle weight. Men need more calories than women do because men tend to have more muscle. By just adding protein powder to your juice, you will be getting the best of both.
Drink your juice as soon as you make it, as soon as your juice is exposed to air. Its live enzymes begin to degrade. Do not store the juice. The whole point is to drink the juice that is freshly squeezed for you and not put it away for later use. Further, there is the danger that juice left open will become the target for dangerous bacteria. Remember, the whole point is to get all of the nutrients and goodness that fresh squeezed juices bring to our bodies.
There are also some important juicing rules we all should be following. I always have juiced carrots, celery, peppers, beets, lemons or grapefruit and something greens like spinach, parsley or kale. I have just blindly juiced away thinking about all the goodness of the fruits and vegetables healing, repairing and revitalizing my whole body – a healthy body and a healthy mind. Well, just yesterday I thought I would do some research to find out if we could possibly actually be over doing our juicing and, as it turns out, there is some very important information in regards to do’s and don’ts of juicing for men and women. Can too much of a good thing actually be bad for you?

Don’t use too many sweet fruits or vegetables in your juice like watermelon, apples, pears, and carrots. They are very nutritious when consumed whole, but if you consume too many of them juiced, the amount of sugar and fructose you are adding to your diet could be over the top. If a juice has too much natural sugar, it can affect insulin levels pretty dramatically, causing cravings and other not so pretty things to happen, like gaining weight. I recommend keeping the sugary fruits and vegetables in your

juice to a maximum of 1 per serving. Exceptions to this rule are lemons and limes that are naturally very low in sugar and do not spike blood insulin levels like other fruits. Juicing is nature’s vitamin pill and it is so hard to eat the amount of vegetables recommended by most experts (6-8 servings) in a typical day. It takes a few pounds of vegetables to get a 12-ounce glass of juice, which gives you an entire day’s serving in one glass. Juicing should be like taking a vitamin, but of course it’s so much better. Ultimately, we want to become consciously aware of the power that the vegetables and fruits can and do have on our body. Certain vegetables can have profound effects. For example, celery is a natural diuretic, as is parsley. Dandelion leaves really stimulate the liver. Beets can move your bowels in a way you never knew was possible. If you juice these and other vegetables or fruits in an irresponsible manner, then you will be doing your body no favours and, instead of experiencing the positive benefits, you will be experiencing negative benefits.

Green Juices: Broccoli, lettuce, cabbage, dandelion, spinach, kale, and other leafy greens tend to be more powerful than other vegetables. If you are a beginner, start off slowly and then gradually begin to enjoy the benefits of these vegetable juices. It is advisable to have a changing regimen. By changing, you will get the broad spectrum of nutrients. Try to use organically grown produce for greater nutritional density and to avoid pesticides and genetically modified foods. If you can’t get organics, wash thoroughly with a vegetable wash, peel and avoid anything that is known to be heavily sprayed (strawberries, blueberries, bell peppers, etc.) or cannot be peeled (like berries). Peel oranges & grapefruits. These skins contain a toxic substance and taste bitter. Leave some of the thick white inside part of the peel since it is rich in bioflavonoids & vitamin C. Always peel imported tropical fruits since they are usually sprayed with chemicals. Peel any fruits or veggies that have been waxed. Remove pits before juicing. Seeds can be juiced, except for apple seeds which can be toxic. Be sure to juice all the stems and leaves with your fruits & vegetables - they are rich in nutrients are alkaline forming (except carrot

and rhubarb greens which are toxic). Remember, there is hardly any digestive work needed to process raw, enzymatically active liquid. Vegetable juice gets into the system quickly. Squeezed vegetable juice is very nutrient-dense and the most important, and most overlooked, reason: juicing cleans the liver. This is a little mind blowing, but if you look into any human biology book, it already tells us that there are now over 700 known functions of the liver. Since crushed vegetable juice goes quickly into the blood stream, it goes quickly into the liver as well. Though men and woman have a lot of metabolically, emotional and physical differences, the one thing we can all agree upon is that juicing is good for all of us and your children too! Just be smart and responsible and if you are new at juicing, start slow and do a little research; there is nothing to be afraid of and trust me, once you’re on to it, you will not believe the difference it will make in your health! Juice away!

How to Be a Father They’ll
S
Fondly Remember Father’s Day
Six practical ways for fathers to leave their children legacies that matter. First: Give time. Not money, not possessions, but your time. A reader remembers how her father “would run down the imaginary football field with a bunch of 15- and 16-year-old girls playing flag football. It brings tears to my eyes to think how tremendously lucky I am (that) it meant something to him to spend time with us and our friends.” Second: Heal what needs healing. A daughter remembers “daddy’s old bench” where he fixed whatever they brought him. “By fixing our toys, you mended our hearts,” she wrote to him. Whether the presenting problem is a skinned knee, a bully at school, lost love, failure at work or confusion about decisions, we must heal the deeper wound, namely, that awful aloneness which only love can heal. Third: Love each child. Not all children are equally easy to love. But fathers must try. For the scar of being lesser in the eyes of one whose approval is everything cuts deep throughout life. A daughter still feels the pain of a father who was “angry, mean and hurtful” to her but not to her younger sisters. Fourth: Recognize what is important to the child. A daughter remembers coming home from a trip abroad, looking up at the gallery where greeters waited, and “there on the floor, scrunched amid many legs, was my kneeling father vying for the best spot in order to see me! Seeing him on the floor waiting for me made me feel so very loved.” Fifth: Live with integrity. A man’s power, wealth, political leanings and religious opinions mean little to children. They study Dad’s character. “My Dad was a dependable employee and a willing volunteer,” writes a grown-up child. “He never cheated anyone, always paid his bills on time and did not overspend. I will always remember him for his integrity. He taught me honesty and to do the right thing.” Sixth: Live freely. A woman writes that she and her husband grew up with emotionally distant fathers. “Neither of them ever, not once in our whole lives, told us they loved us, or hugged us or kissed us,” she says. She marvels at how her husband broke that cycle of aloofness and, before leaving for work, “quietly went in each of our children’s rooms and semi-woke them and kissed them and told them, ‘Goodbye, I love you, have a good day.’” I doubt that we will be remembered for how much money we earned, how far we rose in our careers, how fervent we were in our opinions, or how dashing in appearance. Children need more from us. While we have the chance, we must give them time, healing, love, recognition, integrity and freedom. BY: Tom Ehrich www.beliefnet.com

Father’s Day,
Ugly Ties &
Y
Yes, it’s that time of year again. The snow has finally melted, temperatures are getting warmer, and kids are getting out of school for the summer so they can be in our way for the next 2-3 months. Yes, it’s coming; that day all Dad’s anxiously look forward to… TADA – Father’s Day!!
so they can laugh as you hit the ball. Now we all know it’s a fake ball when they give it to you, but you do it just for the pleasure of pleasing your kid or young adult or grown adult because no matter how old they are, they still like messing around and trying to get good ole Dad frustrated, even if it is “supposed to be his day”. Personally, I don’t care, it’s just the fact that they decided to spend the day with me and not play Xbox in their room for hours. So after shooting that good old 100+ round, you can sit back, watch the US Open with your family and do what all men deserve to do on Father’s day. Yep, take a nap and snore in your chair.
That one day of the year that is yours with your family. You anxiously await the traditional ugly tie that your kids will give you, beaming with joy. But in your head you wonder if they actually picked it out or if it was your wife just getting back at you for stuff you did throughout the year. Yep, it’s her but she tells the kids it’s from them. They don’t know it’s like the ugliest thing next to the Christmas sweater your wife makes you wear once a year to go to a stupid ugly sweater party. They are proud of it and you just have to let it go, but secretly keep planning to embarrass her on her birthday with something just as wonderful.
Happy Father’s Day!
Did you ever wonder why the US Open Golf Tournament is on Father’s Day weekend? I think one of the reasons is that it will keep us quiet from complaining to our wives about how they bought that stupid ugly tie. But really, I think it’s because of the tradition of playing golf with your kids. Now maybe I am more in tune with that than others because my son has been golfing with me since he was a young boy. Ahh golf… one of the many pleasure in life in which you can go through every single emotion you can think of in a 4 hour time period. There are times you are happy, angry, upset, thrilled, elated, frustrated and just want that nice ice cold beer as the pretty cart girl comes by. What better way to spend Father’s Day? Yep, it gets us away from that gloating wife about the tie (again) with that smirk on her face. If you are lucky, maybe they forgot the tie and got you a new golf club. Yea, sure. The most likely thing is that they have snuck some of those exploding golf balls in their pockets to mess with you

We Are
Divorcing
An elderly man in Phoenix calls his son in New York and says, “I hate to ruin your day, but I have to tell you that your mother and I are divorcing; forty-five years of misery is enough.” “Pop, what are you talking about?” the son screams. “We can’t stand the sight of each other any longer,” the old man says “We’re sick of each other, and I’m sick of talking about this, so you call your sister in Chicago and tell her,” and he hangs up. Frantic, the son calls his sister, who explodes on the phone. “Like hell they’re getting divorced,” she shouts, “I’ll take care of this.” She calls Phoenix immediately, and screams at the old man, “You are NOT getting divorced. Don’t do a single thing until I get there. I’m calling my brother back, and we’ll both be there tomorrow. Until then, don’t do a thing, DO YOU HEAR ME?” and hangs up. The old man hangs up his phone, too, and turns to his wife. “Okay,” he says, “they’re coming for Thanksgiving. Now what do we tell them for Christmas?” The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

Attention ALL Men –
How Important Is Your Health?
H
Health awareness is not just for women these days! More and more men are taking a second look at their own health. ARE YOU? Yes – YOU! Have you ever thought about adding a massage treatment or two to the mix? Swedish massage is a gentle treatment involving soft, long, kneading strokes as well as a light rhythmic, tapping stroke mainly focused on the top layers of the muscles, combining with the movements of the joints. It relieves muscle tension, stiffness, and even pain and results in a relaxing and energizing massage. You can integrate essential oils for a Raindrop Therapy massage that boosts your immune systems both antiviral and antibacterial, plus helps you relax to the point where you sleep deeper and longer. Hot Stone massage can also be very relaxing and soothing by using warmed stones and placing them on certain acupressure points and then massaging those areas with gentle pressure. This releases stiffness, tension and pain, leaving you in a relaxed state! There is also Chair Massage, which is done with you sitting totally clothed in a special designed chair. Most sessions are only 15 – 20 minutes and have the same benefits as a regular massage, but focus on the neck, shoulders, back, arms and hands, leaving you so calm that the rest of the day is a pleasure! Next, we have massages that go much deeper with therapeutic and neuromuscular work on trigger points, acupressure points, and the fascia (connective tissue) of the muscle systems. These treatments should only be administered by a therapist who is trained in these specific areas. Not every Massage Therapist knows all of these different types of massage, so please ask before beginning your session. Types include: Deep Tissue Massage, Neuromuscular Therapy Massage, Sports Massage, Shiatsu

Massage, Thai Massage, and Reflexology Massage. Each works on different parts of the muscle, fascia, and joints to help an injured muscle heal faster and have less pain. For most of these treatments, the therapist has been trained to go deeper so there will be initially a little more pain during the session. This pain will only last for a short time and should go away within minutes. Some people are more sensitive than others, but working closely with your therapist can minimize the soreness and can help them know what to do next. The benefits outweigh the discomfort by improving circulation and flexibility, relieving chronic pain patterns and help to remove energy blockages. There is overall healing for all types of physical trauma and it aids in the prevention of new injures. So, gentlemen, if you suffer from back pain, headaches, poor sleep, fatigue, migraines, depression, anxiety, sore muscles, stuff joints, neck pain, high blood pressure, lower-back pain, constipation, or any injury that involves the muscles, joints, nerves, and fascia, help your body heal quicker and faster with a trained Massage Therapist to help you become a healthier and happier you! What a great Father’s Day gift to give or get!! Invest in your health today!

HEALING THE PROSTATE
Natural Options

The Main Causes Of Prostate Dysfunction
Derek Henry, B.Kin, is a highly revered holistic health coach and world renowned natural health blogger from Kelowna, BC who created Healing the Body to help people understand the fundamental principles and intimate details to exceptional health. His popular wellness guides, coaching programs, and educational courses gives people step by step solutions to achieve a healthier body and mind, while empowering them to maintain that lifestyle on their own accord. It seems all the buzz around health today revolves around women, and for good reason. Women make up a huge part of the market in natural health, whereas men seem to be indifferent on day to day health matters. However, if there is one thing men tend to focus on its prostate health, as it affects a good number of men over 40, and over 80% of men over 60. I’d say it’s time to investigate how to heal the prostate through natural remedies. The Role Of The Prostate Gland
The prostate is a walnut sized gland that sits just below the bladder in men. Although it doesn’t get a lot of attention (until something goes wrong), it has some very important roles in men’s overall health, and the health of his offspring. The prostate gland is a key component in the male reproductive system and is responsible for a few key things, including: • The makeup of the male sperm • Filtering toxins and impurities out of the semen to produce the finest sperm possible • First line of defence against disease and infection of the genitourinary system So to ensure a healthy urinary system and healthy offspring, the prostate gland carries a lot of the load.

Stress is a common factor that seems to be overlooked in the role of men’s prostate health. Stress can take an exhausting toll on the body, which wreaks havoc with their hormone (cortisol in particular) levels, which in turn creates excess free radicals and inflammation which are big factors in prostatitis and prostate cancer.
For prostate enlargement to become such a big issue for men, one has to wonder what common threads have made this the biggest concern for men’s health. Although there are a number of contributing factors, there are certainly some common ones that have lead to this condition.
Xenoestrogens
Perhaps one of the most common impurities we have in our systems today are xenoestrogens, or manmade estrogen mimicking molecules. Xenoestrogens are found in a number of places but are most common in plastic containers, lining of canned food, Styrofoam cups and containers, cosmetics and toiletries, and agricultural chemicals. Other hormone disruptors that are largely consumed on a daily basis include unfermented soy products, and animal protein that has been injected with growth hormones. These chemicals and disruptors cause imbalances in the delicate male estrogen – testosterone balance which leads directly to an enlarged prostate. These estrogen mimicking molecules need to be removed in order to heal the prostate effectively.
Sedentary Lifestyle
Due to its location, the prostate needs a healthy amount of circulation to provide it with fresh blood and oxygen. This is why any form of exercise is beneficial, and high intensity exercise a few times a week may prove to be exactly what the prostate ordered. If exercise is something you find a bit difficult to incorporate due to time, money, or motivation, consider a good at home exercise routine that doesn’t require extra equipment, and work with a fitness coach if required. A good rebounder is something you can also add on that can create easy movement and circulation in as little as 15 minutes a day. The bottom line is that a sedentary lifestyle creates congestion and stagnation in the prostate, and those who spend long hours seated (truck drivers, bike riders, pilots, commuters, and office workers) increase that pressure and congestion, which only increases your risk of an enlarged prostate. Get up off the couch, and go play a sport or go to the gym to increase circulation and start healing the prostate. The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

Stress
This is a common factor that seems to be overlooked in the role of men’s prostate health. Traditionally the provider and protector of the family, men typically work long hours at a job that causes plenty of stress. This can take an exhausting toll on the body, which wreaks havoc with their hormone (cortisol in particular) levels, which in turn creates excess free radicals and inflammation which are big factors in prostatitis and prostate cancer. Men need to learn to adapt better to stressful situations, and focus more on things that make them happy, rather than those things that stress them out. Signs of prostate problems
Common Signs Of Prostate Problems Include: • Frequent urination • Urinary urgency • Difficulty starting urination • Reduced force of urine stream • Terminal dribbling • Incomplete emptying of the bladder • Inability to urinate at all • Low sex drive • Balding
Natural Healing Remedies:
There are certainly no shortage of natural remedies to help deal with an enlarged prostate, and when used effectively, they can eliminate the need to do any kind of invasive testing or surgery. Key nutrients to prevent and reverse inflammation and prostate enlargement include: • Zinc (pumpkin seeds, beef liver, sardines, ginger, oysters, pecans, oats, chicken, walnuts) • Lycopene (grapefruit, tomatoes, red peppers, goji berries, and raspberries) • Indole-3-Carbonyl (broccoli, kale, collards, cabbage) • Saw Palmetto • Uva ursi • Vitamin D • Omega 3’s (wild caught salmon, walnuts, avocados, hemp, chia) • Turmeric • Magnesium
Beneficial Activities Include:
• Regular exercise • Infrared sauna • Meditation Combine these key nutrients and activities with a produce and antioxidant filled diet, and you have assembled the best weapons against prostate enlargement and prostate cancer.
Things To Avoid:
In simple terms, anything that has significant toxicity or promotes inactivity can cause harm to the prostate. More specifically, be sure to avoid: • Plastic containers (contain BPA) • Canned food (contain BPA) • Processed foods • Artificial additives (i.e. artificial sweeteners and MSG) • Agricultural chemicals • Styrofoam cups or containers • Cosmetics, personal care products, and toiletries that contain parabens and phthalates • Unfermented soy • Hormone injected animal meat (look for organic, or at least

Not only is it the day after the huge Newsy Neighbour Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival in downtown Strathmore, but it is the 172nd day of the year and there are 193 days remaining until the end of the year. June 21st usually marks the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere and the winter solstice in the southern hemisphere, which is the day of the year with the most hours of daylight in the northern hemisphere and the fewest hours of daylight in the southern hemisphere. Could that be it?
So what else is so special about June 21st? In 2006 Pluto’s newly discovered moons were officially named Nix and Hydra and in 2009 Greenland assumed self-rule, in the latest step towards independence from Denmark. No, let me think… I don’t think that’s it. Canada’s National Aboriginal Day is annually held on June 21 to celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures, and outstanding achievements of the nation’s Aboriginal peoples. There are three Aboriginal groups in Canada – the First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.
If you look back through history, many important events happened on June 21st but I think you all know what I’m getting at here!
IT’S FATHER’S DAY!!
Some scholars believe that Father’s Day history is much older than we actually believe it to be. They say that the custom of honouring dads on a special day is over 4,000 years old; they claim that the tradition of Father’s Day can be traced to the ruins of Babylon. They have recorded that a young boy called Elmesu carved a Father’s Day message on a card made out of clay nearly 4,000 years ago wishing his Babylonian father good health and a long life.

Father’s Day is not a Federal holiday in Canada because it falls on a Sunday.

The m
It is always the third Sunday of June. You should be treating your father extra special on Father’s Day – you could start by helping dad enjoy the day. Perhaps you’ll let him sleep in that morning, or perhaps you won’t badger him over something you’d normally badger him over. Whatever it is, let it be his day. Some nice ways to start would be making him breakfast in bed, along with the newspaper and his favourite cup of special coffee. After breakfast, make sure you have planned some sort of family event. Use this opportunity to get everyone in the family together for a fun day. Think about including all the dads in your family, not just your own father; would-be future dads, your uncles, and brothers, the more the merrier! Plan a picnic at a park or a family BBQ.
Be creative. When it comes to making gifts for Father’s Day, perhaps steer clear of the traditional store-bought gifts of tie and socks. Expensive gifts are not necessary, but the time and effort you put in to create a personalized gift, will be deeply appreciated. Instead, let your own creative abilities shine and bake him a cake, make his favourite dinner, bake some cookies or look at old photos of you and your dad doing fun things together. Take a walk down memory lane by creating either a photo album or a photo slideshow. You may be surprised at how many things you both have forgotten about and how much they mean to you.
Acknowledge the importance of fatherhood. Being a father is a tough job. Dads are responsible for at least one half of the financial and emotional well-being of the family. A thoughtful card, a letter, or short speech that expresses your love will benefit both you and your dad. Giving dad a heartfelt toast, or card of genuine, loving words at the dinner table, or at some other point when all the family are around (siblings especially)! My own father just passed away on April 10th and even though my father and I were not extremely close, he was still my father and I will miss him in my own personal way. One of the things I remember about my father was the way he loved to eat, so as a tribute to dear Dad I’m going to share a few of his favourite dishes. They may help inspire you with your own Father’s Day tribute dinner.

2 tbsp butter 2/3 cup dark brown sugar 2 cups milk, divided 1 large egg 1 large egg yolk 2 tbsp cornstarch 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add brown sugar and stir well, until brown sugar is well moistened. Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, whisk together 1 cup of the milk, egg, egg yolk and cornstarch until very smooth. Whisk in remaining milk, and then slowly pour the mixture into the butter and brown sugar, stirring constantly. Cook, stirring with a spatula and taking care to scrape the bottom and sides of the pan, until sugar is dissolved and mixture just comes to a simmer and begins to bubble. Continue to cook, still stirring, for 1-2 minutes as pudding thickens. Remove from heat and whisk in vanilla extract. Divide pudding into 4 individual serving dishes or ramekins. If you want a pudding skin, leave pudding uncovered. If you do not want skin, press a sheet of plastic wrap onto the surface of each serving of pudding.
1 pound beef sirloin tip steak or bottom round steak 3 tbsp all-purpose flour 3 tbsp butter 2 cans (8 ounces each) tomato sauce 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice 1 tbsp soy sauce 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce 1 medium onion, sliced 1 medium green pepper, cut into strips Thinly slice steak across the grain into strips and lightly coat with flour. In a large skillet, brown steak, a bit at a time – not to overcrowd in butter. Return all meat to skillet. Add the tomato sauce, lemon juice, soy sauce and Worcestershire; mix well. Add the onions and green pepper. Cover and simmer for 45 minutes or until the meat is tender, stirring occasionally. Serve over noodles.

Dear Lifelines; This Father’s Day I’m wondering what I can do for my Dad since he has Alzheimer’s. He doesn’t even know who I am when I come to visit and I feel crushed. How can I make this a positive day for both of us?
Alzheimers Mental decline as you age appears to be largely due to altered connections among brain cells. But research has found that keeping the brain active seems to increase its vitality and may build its reserves of brain cells and connections. You could even generate new brain cells. Low levels of education have been found to be related to a higher risk of Alzheimer’s later in life. This may be due to a lower level of life-long mental stimulation. Put another way, higher levels of education appear to be somewhat protective against Alzheimer’s, possibly because brain cells and their connections are stronger. Well-educated individuals can still get Alzheimer’s, but symptoms may appear later because of this protective effect.
Lost in Memories
You don’t have to turn your life upside down, or make extreme changes to achieve many of these benefits. Start with something small, like a daily walk. After a while, add another small change.
Dear Memories;
Keep your brain active every day:
Thanks for the question. This sounds like a very hard day of the year for you, but try to remember that your dad will have his own unique experience regardless of the steps you take to acknowledge him. Depending on the stage of Alzheimer’s he is in, what you do directly with him will really be based on his level of possible interaction. Try and think back to the days with your dad prior to any Alzheimer’s symptoms and what he really liked to do or experience in those days. If he is unable to listen to stories or go out with you, perhaps in recognition of your father you can go out with your own children or spend time with a friend doing what your dad liked to do – you might garden, go to a market, watch a rodeo, go see a band, plant a tree in his honour, visit with other seniors, volunteer with animals, go fishing, go watch a sports event…etc. Remember your dad for the positive attributes he had and try and share those memories with others if you can.
Stay curious and involved — commit to lifelong learning Read, write, and work crossword, sudoku or other puzzles Attend lectures and plays Enroll in courses at your local adult education center, community college or other community group Play games Garden Try memory exercises Alzheimer’s Association www.alz.org
If your father is in a care facility, spending time speaking with staff or bringing something to acknowledge all of the great support they give your father might be a way to really benefit him in the long run as well. Showing you appreciate his caregivers and what they do can make everyone feel special and recognized for the good work they do. Too often our caregiving staff and healthcare aides go unrecognized. They have our loved ones in their care on a daily basis and really need to hear they make a difference. Caregiving and showing ongoing compassion and support is no easy task, so why not leave something for them like cards, flowers, gifts and whatever items that you might be inspired to give? Little tokens of remembrance can go a long way to brightening up a person’s day. What better time than Father’s Day to demonstrate to others what a great impact your dad still has in your life? Sincerely, Lifelines

TIME TO GET BACK INTO THE GOLF
SWING OF THINGS
Tips for Golf Putting The putter must stay down through the ball to keep it on line. If it goes off to the right, you may have moved your head. Keep your head still, especially on short putts. Before you putt, how do you pick a target? I look at the part of the cup I want the ball to roll over, going in the cup. Look only at that part of the cup you want the ball to roll over going in the cup. Once you see it clearly, look away to the ball. Now, focus on striking the ball solid and at the target. Remember the part of the cup you want the ball to roll over going in. Now imagine where the ball will have to come from to go in on that side or part of the cup. This is your line. This is the line you will be trying to putt your ball on, so choose it carefully. Once you have seen the line, find a spot in front of the ball that will aim you in that direction and line up on that spot. Next, think only of how hard - or better yet, the distance - you will have to stroke the ball. This is most important in golf putting. It determines how short or how far past you will roll the ball. This is why we practice! You don’t have to look back. Your mind can hold the target without another look. Trust me! This seems like a lot of things to do and to remember. But that’s what the routine is all about. Practice for feel and distance, as well as the routine. This is how to get it all right before you putt the ball. All putts should be attempted from the center of the putter. But on breaking putts (right-toleft and left-to-right), the zones of the putter come into play. If you strike the ball on the “heel” zone of the putter, on a downhill leftto-right putt, the physics of this stroke will create a putt that will start a little farther left than you might have intended. But, this will give you more chances of making the putt. Likewise, if you strike the ball on the “toe” zone of the putter, on a downhill right-to-left putt, the physics of the stroke will create a putt that will start a little farther to the right than you might have intended. But, it will give you more of a chance to stay above the hole during the putt.

The golf courses are all opening, but are you prepared? I find that when it comes to golfing, each and every swing is a new experience and I have no words to explain my putting techniques. So I thought this year, before I put on my happy face, and as I gather the courage for my first round of golf of the year, I would do some reading up on some good golf tips and share them with you – we all need all the help we can get. Good luck and happy swinging!
Tips for Golf Sand Shots Golf sand shots are a must for the golfer who wants lower scores. It is the easiest shot in golf because you don’t really hit the ball. The ball position in a sand shot is very important because you must hit as much as two inches behind the ball to get it out of the sand. This is done by playing the ball (ball position) off of your left heel. This is the same place you would tee the ball up for your drive. This position gives you the forward placement of the ball and is a place you are familiar with, so you are not trying to guess about the two inches. Now, you have the ball position straight. You must align your target to the left of the flag when around the green. You may ask why, but trust me on this one. As you lay your sand wedge flat to get the ball up and out of the sand, this will cause the ball to be directed to the right of any target you choose. When you are playing for par the best thing is not to get in the sand. But if you do get in a sand trap, the length of your swing should depend on the carry distance needed for the sand shot. This means that if you need the ball to carry a short distance, then your backstroke should not be too long. But always remember to finish all the way through your swing. This is a common mistake by some golfers, plus it is one that is easily made when you are tired.
The High Pitch You’re 20 or 30 yards short of the green, and the pin’s just a few steps on. You’ll have to fly it most of the way. Grab your highest lofted wedge, and take a narrow stance, with most of your weight on the front foot (1). Your stance should be open, the ball well forward, and your grip pressure light. Swing back to about hip high, and as you come down keep your wrists firm (2). If you flip your wrists, you’ll have trouble hitting the ball solid or getting enough height on the shot. Instead, think of it as a mini swing: Do all the things you do in your normal swing, just to a lesser degree. This will keep you from using all arms, which I see a lot of amateurs do. Turn your shoulders, and let your body pivot naturally. At impact, don’t try to help the ball up. Swing through and let the loft on the clubface do the work (3). If you close the face at all, the ball will come out low and run. Holding the face open through impact will produce maximum trajectory.

Altogether Different
The Low Pitch If you have more green to work with, grab something with a little less loft—I use my 54-degree. Your setup is similar to the high pitch, but the ball is centered and your stance is not as open (1). You’re going to want this one to come out lower and run more. Pick a spot on the green about a third of the way to the hole—that’s where you should land the ball. So, if the flagstick is 20 yards onto the putting surface, try to land it six or seven steps on and let it run to the cup. For the swing, I think about it as a big putting stroke. That keeps my legs from getting too involved in the motion and reminds me to rotate my torso back and through (2). I try to feel as if I’m hooking the chip, letting the clubface turn over so the toe is pointing toward the sky at the finish (3). This is important because if you pop this shot up, it’s going to stop short, and you’ll be looking at a long putt.
Tips for Golf Irons The golf irons you choose to use should be a key factor in whether you swing slow or smooth. The length of your iron does matter. Your golf irons and your swings are inter-related but it’s not necessarily how fast or how slow you swing a long or short iron. Remember, the longer the shaft of the iron, the slower the swing. Don’t rush your swing; smooth is better than fast. With long iron clubs, most golfers have a tendency to hold on to the stroke - not letting the club release. So when you swing a long iron, be certain to finish the swing. Ball position is important also if you want the ball airborne. Play the ball just forward of center. Try this and see if you get better results. But where are you going to put your results other than try to remember them? You need to get in the habit of keeping written notes of which club you used and how far you hit the ball. Short irons are used when you are within 150 yards of the green. They are the golf clubs you need to get close to the flag if possible. So, here is what you do. Because they are short-shafted, the tendency to swing them fast is a problem with some golfers. Swing short golf irons with a smooth tempo, but finish all the way through the swing. If done correctly you will become accurate in hitting your target. Remember to swing smooth, not fast. Also be sure to document how your short golf irons are being used and how far the ball traveled. For half shots you can try to use what some might call a measured swing - from 8 o’clock to 4 o’clock, and 9 to 3.

any GOOD AT IT.
I’m not very good at golf. Yes, it’s true. I’m something of an amateur when it comes to the sport, and my potential is lower than the average IQ of a watermelon. But, despite all that, there’s something relaxing about golf. Or, there is when you manage to hit the ball, anyway. I first noticed that my golfing prowess was not up to scratch when, during sports class in early high school, having rotated into the golfing part of the course, I proceeded to spend my first 50 minute lesson in the sport sending large chunks of the school oval flying through the air, until my teacher got so fed up that he sent me inside to do maths homework instead. Being, at the time, a young man who had no real interest in sport and a highly vested interest in not looking like a fool in front of my classmates, this came as something of a relief.
large golf course. Originally, I had no interest in attending this golf course, as there was a beach nearby, and as this job was in Australia, the beach seemed to be a much more viable options for recreation. Also, there was mini-golf nearby, and I’m much better at mini-golf. But, at some point while working there I noticed that a large proportion of my colleagues would end up disappearing to “run errands” at roughly 3 o’clock in the afternoon, and would
As I got older and went to University, however, my own interests changed. I became much more interested in sport, even if I was still basically incompetent at most of them (how do you get that racquet to hit a tennis ball, anyway? It all moves too fast for me!). I also gained significantly less interest in mathematics. Many years after the high school humiliation, I ended up working in a building directly opposite a

Having later discovered that these errands invariably meant a trip to the golf club, I decided to join them one afternoon. After all, networking is an important part of any career. Once again, I wasn’t terribly good at the whole golf thing. But it was never about competition. Yes, I’d spend an inordinate amount of time standing in a sand bunker, swiping away wildly at a ball that seemed to be mocking me. But I was having a good time with some great people. And I was getting myself outside as well. And in a day and age where everyone seems to spend their days sitting at a desk, with a computer screen staring back at us, surely getting outside and playing a round of golf is a good thing. I certainly found it was.

KNOWN TRUTHS ABOUT GOLF
1) Brand new golf balls are water-magnetic. Though this cannot be proven in the lab, it is a known fact that the more expensive the golf ball, the greater its attraction to water. 2) Topping a 3-iron is the most painful torture known to man. 3) A golfer hitting into your group will always be bigger than anyone in your group. 4) Likewise, a group you accidentally hit into will consist of a football player, a professional wrestler, a convicted murderer and an IRS agent -- or some similar combination. 5) All 3-woods are demon-possessed. 6) Golf balls from the same “sleeve” tend to follow one another, particularly out of bounds or into the water.
Although, 15 over par is still a horrible score. I probably should work on that.
7) A severe slice is a thing of awesome power and beauty.
Adam Schultz
8) The last three holes of a round will automatically adjust your score to what it really should be.

In two short years, the Shaw Charity Classic has become one of the crowning jewels on the PGA Champions Tour. “We’ve been very fortunate,” smiles tournament director Sean Van Kesteren. “We have amazing sponsors, volunteers, a great golf course and we’ve been blessed with world class champions.” Now the real challenge begins! The honeymoon is over and the organizers know they can’t get complacent, especially during an economic downturn. “We have lost some sponsors from the oil and gas sector,” admits Van Kesteren. “However, our focus has changed and now we are targeting other businesses (like banks and insurance companies) who are still doing well in this economy. We know there’s still lots of room for improvement from a spectator and sponsor experience and we believe we can even do better for our charities.” The Shaw Charity Classic has already raised over 4.6 million dollars for Southern Alberta Charities. In back to back years, this event has set a new benchmark for charitable giving for a PGA Tour Champions Tour event. “Our new date on the schedule will certainly help,” says Van Kesteren. “The Labour Day weekend can be a challenge but we are thrilled to have the tournament moved to the second weekend in August. At this point, this is only a one year exception by the tour but we are lobbying for a permanent change.”

“This year’s event will be live on the Golf Network (not tape delayed) and that means we will end earlier in the day. Our plan is to bring in some live entertainment to enhance the spectator experience and bring extra value to our guests.” “The new date is also great for our players! There is no event on the schedule the following weekend so we are already getting players asking for more details on Banff and the surrounding area.” It’s no secret the players love the Shaw Charity Classic. The field, which will consist of 81 stars of the Champions Tour, will compete for 2.35 million in prize money at Canyon Meadows Golf and Country Club.
If you are looking for an inexpensive Father’s Day Gift, take your dad to a PGA Tour Canada event. It’s a spectator friendly event and you will witness some of the best up and comers in the world of golf.
Despite a bad back, defending champion Fred Couples has already given the organizers a verbal commitment to return. There will be some new faces as well like Welshman Ian Woosnam and American Peter Jacobson. “Jacobson is probably known better for his TV work than his golf career,” says Kesteren. “However, he is an entertainer. He does an amazing Craig Stadler impersonation and we hope he will be putting on a show at the driving range.” The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

Woosnam is a former Masters champion but he might be better known for a costly mistake in the 2001 Open Championship. Heading into the final round with the lead, he was given a two stroke penalty for starting the round with 15 clubs in his bag (the allowable maximum is 14). While his caddie Miles Byrne was ultimately responsible for the gaffe, Woosie took the high road saying, “It was the biggest mistake he will make in his life, he won’t do it again, and he’s a good caddie.”
LPGA Tour Returns to Priddis Greens!
Two weeks later, Woosnam did fire Byrne, when after a night of drinking, he failed to show up for a tee time.
The 44th playing of Canada’s National Women’s Open Championship will return to the venue that hosted in 1999 and 2009. Norway’s Suzann Pettersen claimed the title in 2009 at 15 under par. World Golf Hall of Fame member Karrie Webb was the champion in 1999.
100 years of Golf History! Plans are already underway by the Calgary Golf Association for the 100th edition of the City Amateur golf tournament. The 99th City Amateur will take place the same weekend (Aug 6 - 9) as the Shaw Charity Classic at Carstairs Golf and Country Club. “We have big plans for the 100th City Amateur,” says CGA board member Jim Finney. “We are a volunteer board with a mandate to promote amateur golf. This event has an amazing history and we have lots of great ideas.” The event is still looking for a title sponsor and could use some volunteer support. If you are interested in helping out, go to the contact page on the Calgary Golf Association website.

It was a big announcement last month as the stars of the LPGA tour will return to Southern Alberta in 2016. For the third time in the tournament’s history, The Canadian Pacific Women’s Open will return to Priddis Greens Golf and Country Club in Calgary, August 22 - 28th.

THE HISTORY OF VEHICLES
Benz Patent-Motorwagen Photo credits: Dikiiy / Shutterstock.com
O
Over the years, I have owned many, many vehicles. My first car was a 1967 Chevy Malibu. I have also owned a 1976 Trans Am, a Camaro Z28 and a 1999 Jaguar XJ8. What can I say, I like fast cars! Now I drive my Big White Hemi Dodge Ram Truck. Can you believe that the Benz Patent-Motorwagen is believed to be the first modern automobile? It was built in 1886 by German inventor Carl Benz. In August 1888, Carl Benz’s wife, Bertha Benz, became the first person to drive a car over a long distance. Without telling her husband, she drove one of their Benz Patent-Motorwagen’s along with her two eldest sons from a town called Mannheim in southern Germany to Pforzheim. Automobile trips before this were usually short drives; she wanted to prove the automobile they had invented was a useful contraption that the general public could use. Bertha Benz’s road trip was a pioneering drive and a key event in the technical development of the car. Covering 106 km (66 miles) each way, she did the round trip in two days, solving numerous problems on the way. When the brakes needed repairing, she invented brake lining. She used

a hatpin to clean a blocked fuel pipe and insulated a wire with a garter. She located fuel at the city pharmacy in Wiesloch (hailed as the first fuel station in the world) and on her return home made other suggestions, such as the need of another gear for climbing hills. As automobiles became more popular, a need arose to manufacture affordable cars on a large-scale basis. Ransom Olds in 1902 debuted a production-line manufacturing system at his Oldsmobile factory in Michigan, USA. The Henry Ford’s Model T car, introduced in 1908, is often regarded as the most famous of all early automobiles. It was the first car to become publically affordable, especially after Ford massively improved the production-line manufacturing system. In 1914, Ford created a production-line system that focused on synchronization, precision, and specialization. Ford’s cars came off the line much faster than previous methods (from 12.5 man-hours down to just 1.5), which increased productivity, yet used less manpower. By assigning each worker a specified area rather than allowing them to roam about, injuries were dramatically reduced. Now, have you heard that Google has developed a driverless car? The vehicles look cute but hardly impact-resistant, and they have a top speed of only 25 miles per hour. Google still has significant work to do before its software can handle all the situations a human driver can. “There’s going to be an enormous market for small autonomous vehicles,” says Gary Silberg, an auto industry analyst at the consulting firm KPMG. He cites city centers, airports, campuses, and amusement parks as places where vehicles, much like those Google is just starting to test could fit in. Google said that the new design will be unleashed on the roads of the company’s hometown of Mountain View, California, this summer. Eventually, up to 100 vehicles will roam the town’s suburban streets. These cars are expected to be available commercially around the year 2020. Can you imagine seeing a car driving down the street empty? That would be just too weird and it sounds like it really is going to happen! What is this world coming to? Just give them another 20 years and we will have flying cars – it could happen!
Drive safe out there and may something wonderful happen for you today! Kathryn Hartwell

South Georgia. No, I am not talking about that old southern state filled with southern charm, where most of the Civil War was fought and the mansions of “Gone with the Wind.” I’m talking about a chunk of the Andes that wandered into the southern Atlantic some 50 million years ago. The 100-mile spit of land is so isolated that it creates its own weather system, but despite—or perhaps because of—its ruggedness, it’s also a holy grail. It is located 1,300 miles east of Tierra del Fuego in the South Atlantic Ocean. A quote from the Journal of Nick Sheehan, 9th October 1966 “We arrived at South Georgia on Sunday morning and sailed slowly up the short, wide fjord at the end of which, tucked into the corner of a secluded bay, lay the tiny settlement of Grytviken. The approach was one of the most impressive sights I have ever seen. The island was almost entirely snow covered, broken in patches with streaks of black as the more protruding of the rock ridges nosed a rough surface above the white. High mountains rose menacingly over the glaciers on the shoreline, their peaks lost in hazy clouds that were the only blot in a clear blue sky. The sun was low in the East and reflected its light off the rounded curves of snow and ice to produce a brilliant almost dazzling effect to the scene. The island was desolate and silent and wonderfully beautiful.”
The type of people who visit this island are not there for the sun and sand; they come in order to see at first hand the beauty of the island and its abundant wildlife. Perhaps, some come for inspiration. As a result of reading the story of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s voyage to Antarctica, the musician Elvis Costello and his wife “ended up taking a holiday to South Georgia”. Naturalists, historians and scientists come to further their research. Films are made about the wildlife on the Island, the Shackleton story or the history of the whaling and sealing periods. Adventurers come to sail, canoe, climb, ski and increasing numbers are coming to explore the relatively unknown, mountainous interior of the island. There is no place to stay and you would just visit the island on day trips. Your only option would be on a cruise vessel; about 30 vessels visit each year, carrying about 2,000 passengers from all over the world. It is possible to charter a yacht from the Falkland Islands to organize an expedition with its own support vessel and special permits must be applied for. There are two ports at Grytviken and King Edward Point (KEP). There is no connection to the outside world. It’s like the end of the earth, but for those who have visited this awe-inspiring place, their lives have been changed forever. Do your research on “South Georgia” – the images shown on the internet are beyond describable. Kathryn Hartwell

Turkey may be one of the most diverse travel destinations and it is the 37th largest country in the world. It is bordered by eight different
countries: Bulgaria to the northwest, Greece to the west, Georgia to the northeast, Armenia, Iran and the Azerbaijani Exclave of Nakhichevan to the east, and Iraq and Syria to the south. The country is encircled by seas on three sides: the Aegean Sea to the west, the Black Sea to the north and the Mediterranean to the south. Turkey also contains the Sea of Marmara in the northwest. I guess that would explain its diversity. Its history is quite remarkable when you consider its past; you are following in the wake of some remarkable historical figures. Turkey has hosted A-list history-book figures including Julius Caesar, who famously ‘came, saw and conquered’. Byzantine Christians cut cave churches into Cappadocia’s fairy chimneys, and Ottoman sultans luxuriated in Istanbul, ruling an empire that stretched from Budapest to Baghdad.
Virginia Maxwell writes of Istanbul: “Why do I love this city? Let me count the ways. I love the locals, who have an endless supply of hospitality, good-humour and insightful conversation at their disposal. I love the fact that when I walk down a city street, layers of history unfold before me. I love listening to the sound of the muezzins dueling from their minarets and I love seeing the sun set over the world’s most beautiful skyline. I love the restaurants,
info@kaleidoscopetravel.ca 403-934-9447 • 1-888-Y-CRUISE
the bars and the tea gardens. But most of all, I love the fact that in Istanbul, an extraordinary cultural experience lies around every corner.” An old Turkish saying goes: ‘A cup of coffee commits one to 40 years of friendship.’ This proverb nails the addictive qualities of the Turkish lifestyle, enjoyed by people who are blessed with a land of ancient bazaars and sandy beaches, magnificent ruins and soaring mountains – and who are keen to make sure visitors love it as much as they do. The greatest surprise for first-time visitors to Turkey is the sheer diversity found between its Aegean beaches and eastern mountains. In Cappadocia, which is a geological oddity of honeycombed hills and towering boulders of otherworldly beauty and the southwestern coastlines that offer mix trekking, horse-riding and water sports and a maze of panoramic terraces, there is no surprise Turkey has attracted so many folk over the centuries. There is so much more I could say about this incredible country it would take pages upon pages to include all the information of this magical meeting place of east and west. It could quite possibly be the vacation of a lifetime! And, like any vacation, do your research as not to miss a thing! Kathryn Hartwell References: lonelyplanet.com, goturkey.com, wikipedia.org

Politics
Lessons From the Father of Confederation
There is chaos in the house. Words and accusations are flying. Everything is awry and it appears everyone has only his or her own interests at heart. Then dad walks in and quite suddenly everything changes. At times, whether he is loud or quiet, gentle or tough, a father has the ability to exercise incredible influence.
S
ir John A. Macdonald has been portrayed as a political conniver, an alcoholic, a near rogue, a lonely man, a gifted orator, a wit and an idealist. He was born in Scotland, immi grated to Canada with his family as a boy and opened his own law practice at age 21 even though not legally entitled to do so. In 1844 Macdonald was elected as Kingston’s member in parliament. Three years later he joined cabinet and in 1857 became prime minister of United Canada (Ontario and Quebec). In 1864 when no party proved ca pable of governing for long, Macdonald agreed to a proposal from his political rival, George Brown, that the parties unite in a Great Coalition to seek federation and political reform. This let to a group of leading politicians from the colonies interested in forming a Confederation meeting in Charlottetown, then Quebec and finally London. Macdonald was the leading figure in these discussions and conferences, which resulted in the British North America Act and the birth of Canada as a nation on July 1,1867. For this he is became known as the father of Canada. Whether their actions were based on political ideologies arising from the French and American revolutions proclaiming the rights of the individual or from statism, a belief that the state should control either economic or social policy, or both, is debated. Evidence of the conflicted values continues in current Canadian politics as increasingly governing parties form alliances ignoring public feedback or opinion. They arrogantly wield power to escape accountability to Canadians. (A Conservative bid to rewrite the law in order to retroactively erase the RCMP’s mishandling of gun registry records sets the table for legislated, after-the-fact cover-ups of far more serious crimes, Canada’s information commissioner says. CP- May 14, 2015)
“Almost all discourse in the Canadian Parliament is scripted by party staffers. Questions posed of the
42 •
thenewsyneighbour.com
government rarely meet straight answers. Politicians vote as their party leaders dictate nearly 100 per cent of the time. Few private members’ initiatives get past first reading. Do other countries do democracy better? The answer seems to be yes – if you subscribe to the belief that MPs should be free to speak their minds and to act as the voice of their constituents.”
Macdonald provides an apt example that leaders or fathers don’t have to be perfect to get things accomplished. He wanted the government, which presided over the infancy of the Dominion, like that which presided over its birth, to be a coalition. He even went the length of decrying the evils of partyism. “Party,” he quoted, “is merely a struggle for office, the madness of many for the gain of a few.” In his first cabinet, he included an almost equal number of Liberals and Conservatives; and he made a genuine attempt to form a nonparty government. He unfortunately did not succeed. There is evidence that the way governing parties rule hasn’t changed much - a sad observation to make in an evolving world. Although the father of Confederation beliefs would have seen a coalition of those serving Canada, it doesn’t appear that the majority of politicians currently in office believe it possible. Their actions continue to speak louder than words produced by party staffers. And for that, there may be a consequence. How novel a concept that Canadians desire parliaments that chose to make collaborative decisions to achieve what is best for all constituents whatever their demographic or economic status. “Every father should remember that one day his son will follow his example instead of his advice.” Charles F. Kettering

The concept of a “government for the people by the people” has long disappeared. In an article appearing in The Globe and Mail February 7, 2013 titled “Is Canada’s party discipline the strictest in the world? Experts say yes”, the degree of control exercised over Canadian Members of Parliament is revealed.

MEXICAN DINING
I
I recently spent 7 weeks in Arizona, the Grand Canyon State, and the most amazing, stunning and spectacular place I have ever seen. From the majestic dunes, monument valley, the great Colorado river, Sedona, to the Grand Canyon. Arizona has taken a place in my heart. While there, I spent some time visiting Los Algadones, Mexico, which is about 10 minutes outside of Yuma, and we found a little restaurant on top of the hill called “The La Parrilla” which means “The grill” in English. Aleesha, Hunter and I just could not get enough of this fabulous restaurant and during her 6 day visit to Yuma, I believe we had lunch in Mexico at “La Parrilla” three times. It’s not just about the awesome atmosphere and the exceptional service; it’s the FOOD!!! I must confess, I had the same thing every single time we went and it was the “Chili Relleno.” OMG I’m quite sure it is the best thing I have ever eaten in my whole entire life! Aleesha agrees! They also make from scratch (no Costco margarita mixes used here) amazing margaritas. Since arriving home, I have scoured Pinterest looking for the best “Chili Relleno” recipes I could find and found out they are quite a bit of work to make. I really want to share the luscious flavour of this recipe with you so this is the one I found to be the tastiest and easiest to make.

At Coldwell, we are real people serving real people.
DIRECTIONS: PEPPERS: Combine both grated cheeses and take small amounts and roll together to make “bullets”. If using fresh peppers, roast them and take the skin off and snip stem end off and “hollow” stuff the peppers well with the bullet of cheese and set aside. Do this for all of them. Lightly roll or coat the peppers in flour. Beat your egg whites until stiff (like meringue) then fold the yolks back into the whites. 5 fold in 2 tbsp flour. Drop stuffed chilies into batter, one at a time. Slide into 1 1/2” moderately hot oil. Fry until golden brown, working quickly, drain chilies on bed of paper towels. SAUCE: Cook all ingredients together in saucepan; slightly thicken with some corn starch and cold water, if needed. Pour over fried chilies. Sprinkle with remaining cheese. Bake in a 350°F oven for 30 minutes, or until bubbly. Recipe from www.bigoven.com shared by “markaj”.

Revitalize Downtown Revitalize DowntownStrathmore Strathmore
Revitalize Downtown Strathmore This is the last month you will see this Revitalize Downtown Strathmore section in the magazine. This month wraps up our 6 month advertising campaign and we will be celebrating all the success by throwing a huge festival on June 20th. If you haven’t heard of this by now, you must be living under a rock or something. Jokes, of course! You can see all the details of this event on the previous page. We want to take a minute to remind everyone why The Newsy Neighbour did all this... The Newsy Neighbour is big on supporting local. Supporting local is vital to the growth of any town. With this project, we are focusing on downtown Strathmore. Downtown Strathmore has one of the best clothing stores in Strathmore with high quality women’s clothing and home décor – and you can shop here in town instead of driving to the city, paying for gas, paying for parking, and spending time looking for a parking spot. Downtown Strathmore has a great drug store with some of the nicest, friendliest staff members and some of
STRATHMORE, AB
the coolest items from hilarious birthday cards, to 3D cake pans, to beautiful jewellery – the list really does go on and on! Need good insurance? Check out downtown and get treated like you matter and are not just a number. On a budget but your kids need clothes? Why buy something new that will shrink and rip for twice the price when you can buy a pre-loved outfit for a fraction of the cost but is still in great shape! This is why we are having the festival. People say, “I didn’t even know we had a kid’s consignment store.” “I didn’t know we had a computer repair shop.” “I didn’t know we had a place to buy skateboards.” “I didn’t know we had a bakery.” “I didn’t know we had an antique store.” We do. We have that and much, much more. Remember, by choosing to support locally owned businesses, you help to maintain our community. The goals of this Revitalize Downtown Strathmore Project are to encourage, educate and create awareness about the benefits of buying local, and to increase support for local business owners in our community! These are one-of-a-kind businesses in downtown Strathmore. Show thanks to them for being in our community by supporting them.

Thank You The Newsy Neighbour, would like to take the time to thank everyone that has been involved with this Revitalize Downtown Strathmore advertising campaign and project.
It has been a wonderful success. We have heard from many of our advertisers that the response to all the extra exposure has been just fantastic. None of this would have been a success without the advertising participants, the sponsors and the readers. “The Newsy Neighbour is doing more to draw attention to downtown Strathmore than anyone I've seen in the 20+ years I've lived here. You are creating an interest and showcasing what is available. You are marketing the businesses better than they are marketing themselves. Incredibly proud of you and glad to be associated with you. Keep going ladies.”
An extra special thank you goes to the following:

Revitalize Downtown Strathmore
Your Good Deed For The Month:
GO SHOPPING!!! Participate In The Downtown Strathmore Shopping Challenge! Why is this a good deed? You are creating more good jobs: Small local businesses are the largest employer nationally and in our community, provide the most jobs to residents. You are investing in your community: Local businesses are owned by people who live in this community, they are less likely to leave the community, and are more invested in the community’s future. You are encouraging local prosperity: A growing body of economic research shows that in an increasingly homogenized world, entrepreneurs and skilled workers are more likely to invest and settle in communities that preserve their one-of-a-kind businesses and distinctive character. You are helping to keep our community unique: Where we shop, where we eat and have fun -- all of it makes our community home. Our one-of-a-kind businesses are an integral part of the distinctive character of this place. Our tourism businesses also benefit. “When people go on vacation they generally seek out destinations that offer them the sense of being someplace, not just anyplace.” ~ Richard Moe Participating in the downtown Strathmore shopping challenge is fun and chances are pretty good you will tell people you are doing it, OR people will see you doing it. This will encourage others to do the same. The more people that shop locally, the stronger our community will be. Challenge your friends. See who can finish first, and then drop off your contest forms to The Newsy Neighbour table at the festival and be entered to win 1 of 3 AMAZING prizes!

Show-and-Tell
She holds up a snapshot of an infant. ‘This is Luke, my baby brother, and I’m going to tell you about his birthday.’
The ‘Middle Wife’ By An Anonymous 2nd Grade Teacher
‘First, Mom and Dad made him as a symbol of their love, and then Dad put a seed in my Mom’s stomach, and Luke grew in there. He ate for nine months through an umbrella cord.’
I’ve been teaching now for about fifteen years. I have two kids myself, but the best birth story I know is the one I saw in my own second grade classroom a few years back.
She’s standing there with her hands on the pillow, and I’m trying not to laugh and wishing I had my camcorder with me. The kids are watching her in amazement.
When I was a kid, I loved show-and-tell. So I always have a few sessions with my students. It helps them get over shyness and, usually, show-and-tell is pretty tame. Kids bring in pet turtles, model airplanes, pictures of fish they catch, stuff like that. And I never, ever place any boundaries or limitations on them. If they want to lug it in to school and talk about it, they’re welcome.
‘Then, about two Saturdays ago, my Mom starts going, ‘Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh!’ Erica puts a hand behind her back and groans. ‘She walked around the house for, like an hour, ‘Oh, oh, oh!’ (Now this kid is doing a hysterical duck walk and groaning.)
Well, one day this little girl, Erica, a very bright, very outgoing kid, takes her turn and waddles up to the front of the class with a pillow stuffed under her sweater.

Circus Aerial Camp: for children who love to hang upside down, tumble, and swing. This camp will feature aerial work (silks and trapeze) along with acrobatics and hand balancing. Working on the aerial apparatus along with connecting to dance, hand balancing and acrobatic steps. July 13th-17th.
‘Then the middle wife starts saying ‘push, push,’ and ‘breathe, breathe. They started counting, but never even got past ten. Then, all of a sudden, out comes my brother. He was covered in yucky stuff that they all said it was from Mom’s play-center, so there must be a lot of toys inside there. When he got out, the middle wife spanked him for crawling up in there in the first place.’ Then Erica stood up, took a big theatrical bow and returned to her seat. I’m sure I applauded the loudest. Ever since then, when it’s Show-and-tell day, I bring my camcorder, just in case another ‘Middle Wife’ comes along.

June is Recreation and Parks Month and we want you to celebrate it here in Wheatland County. The snow has melted and the flowers are starting to pop out of the ground. For a toddler, this may be their first time experiencing the feeling of grass under their feet or hearing the robins chirp. Explore the sights, sounds and smells together. Use the outdoors as a place to play. It is time to break out the sidewalk chalk and draw a hopscotch path. Or let your child draw their community on the driveway, complete with a drive thru and stores to shop at. Did they include stop signs and crosswalks?

Entry fees are paid at the Shows and Gymkhanas. Shows start at 9:30 a.m. and Gymkhanas start between noon and 12:30 p.m., depending on when the Show classes end.

Health
With warmer days and more daylight hours, the thought of taking on spring cleaning projects seems almost fun! Preparing the yard for upcoming barbeques and lazy days sitting on the deck is just one of the many clean-up jobs to be completed – and it’s not just our homes, yards and vehicles that benefit from a thorough clear-out and clean-up; our mouths also gain from a little spring cleaning action.

Fun Country Riding Club Of Strathmore Do you have a horse and want to do something different with it? Check out Fun Country Riding Club of Strathmore (“the Club”). The Club was formed under the name “Fun Country Riders” in 1979, incorporated under the present name “Fun Country Riding Club of Strathmore” as a non-profit society in 1988, and averages 125 to 150 members per year. 2015 is its 36th year of operation!
Benefits of Regular Cleanings Maintaining regular dental cleanings not only keeps your breath smelling great, your teeth white and your gums healthy – this routine habit also contributes to preventing other dental and health concerns such as Tooth Decay, Periodontal Disease and reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke. During a dental cleaning, bacterium are removed from the surfaces of teeth and from below the gum line – this buildup of plaque causes tooth decay by releasing acids when feeding on food remnants – and the acid softens and weakens tooth enamel along with irritating bone and gum tissue.
The Club endeavours to promote horsemanship skills and sportsmanship in a family-oriented group. Members participate in club-organized shows, gymkhanas, trail rides, horsemanship clinics, the Strathmore Stampede Days Parade and the Chestermere Fair Gymkhana during the year. Our regular shows and gymkhanas are currently held on the Strathmore & District Agriculture Society grounds in Strathmore, Alberta. Awards are given based on points accumulated through the year in shows and gymkhanas, with volunteering and/or participation in meetings also being criteria.
Dental Cleanings Help Prevent Tooth Loss The biggest cause of tooth loss in adults is Periodontal Disease – a disease that involves the tissues that support teeth. Just like gum tissue is irritated by bacteria that live in dental plaque, bone is also irritated and recedes in relation to gum recession. If you want to keep your teeth for a lifetime then a healthy level of jaw bone is essential – otherwise teeth become mobile and eventually fall out or need to be extracted. Regular dental cleanings keep damaging plaque and bacterial levels under control – enabling oral tissues to remain healthy and abundant.
Riders range in age from one to eighty years, with a wide variety of divisions and skill levels available. The Show section always includes Pleasure and Equitation, with a third class chosen from trail, reining, showmanship, command, bareback, and sometimes a class with small jumps. The Gymkhana section always includes Barrel Racing and Pole Bending. The third and fourth classes are chosen from stake racing, keyhole, flag picking and, new this year, thread the needle. Riders can use Western or English tack and apparel.
Removing Staining From Teeth Having your teeth cleaned also provides a nice cosmetic boost to your smile. Daily consumption of tea and coffee, red wine and cigarettes quickly leave their mark on otherwise healthy teeth. Removing the stains left-behind from daily living can transform a dull smile, restoring the whiteness and brightness of teeth.

Start looking at the food in your fridge and pantry as your new medicine cabinet Eating food to heal your body is not a new concept. Long before traditional medicine, the ancient and prominent healers of the day used what they had available to them. It was Hippocrates that coined the phrase, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” Most people do not know what that truly means. In these modern times where the vast majority of food comes pre-packaged and overly processed, we have moved far away from this simple truth: food is medicine. Not just any food but fresh, unprocessed, untampered food. When your body is struggling with any number of health challenges, you can support it and promote its healing by fuelling your body with the right foods and not cause further damage and inflammation by simply avoiding others. Eating a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables in their natural state provides the body with much needed vitamins and minerals. Making sure to include a wide variety of colours, including each colour of the rainbow, ensures the widest array of healing, life-giving nutrients. Consuming high quality, antibiotic and hormone-free meats can provide all the components your body needs to rebuild its immune system, repair muscle tissue and satisfy your hunger. maintaining premium skin quality, reducing inflammation, and promoting cellular repair. This is how food is our medicine. There is a whole world of whole food supplements that people know little about. Artichokes are used for cholesterol control. Therapeutic spices like turmeric can be used as an anti-inflammatory, ginger as anti-nauseate, parsley for bad breath...the list goes on. It is time to start using our food to not just fill our stomach but to fuel and heal our bodies. Start looking at the food in your fridge and pantry as your new medicine cabinet. Let this influence what you bring into the house. This simple shift in thinking can make a powerful difference. Langdon Chiropractic See their ad on page 8

The
Present of the Pause
I
In our busy lives we often feel we have no time to stop and pause. We want it terribly bad but somehow we just keep ourselves at arm’s length from having those moments. Pausing can look and feel differently for everyone. It can even look and feel different for you from moment to moment. Many old sayings reflect this concept, like this one: stop and smell the roses. This idea of stopping and pausing isn’t anything new. Yet we still find ourselves focussing on stress management instead of managing our beautiful lives filled with beautiful pauses. Stop managing stress and start managing pauses. What is pausing all about? It’s about noticing the beauty that is right in front of you. Pausing allows you to see and feel the truth around you. Even as I write this article this month, I feel the need to pause, but this need is coming from a different place. There are always two places to come from. Fear or Love. A pause that comes from fear is really a long way around to the truth. Usually you will have some amazing learning along the way but it’s really tough to see it through all of the clouds. As I have found my way through the clouds, I have found the truth to be shared with you. The pause that comes from love is totally different. This is the pause that many grandparents can easily find and even toddlers and young children. Somewhere in between those ages we lose sight of the pause from a state of love. Look to them for examples of pausing. Pausing from this state of love allows abundance to flow all around you. Pausing from love allows you to see your big vision. Pausing from love allows you to deeply connect with your children. Pausing from love allows you to hear the words of affirmation your family has for you. Pausing from love allows you to just BE. If for a moment you parented your children as if you were already

a grandparent, you would find yourself more relaxed and wiser. If for a moment you parented your children as if you were a child yourself, you would find yourself having more fun and more play each and every day. …but I have to be responsible. Is being responsible not about taking care of yourself? If you fill yourself up with moments of pauses the truth is you will have so much more to give. Relaxation, clarity and loads of fun will pour out into your home, into your life and into your world. Take a pause. Share with us what you did to pause and share the “present” that pause gave to you. Smelling the beautiful blossoms of the trees in the spring,

I will always be...
Father’s Day
Daddy’s Little Girl
T
There are few relationships more influential than that between a father and a daughter. In this respect I have been blessed beyond belief. My dad is one of the most remarkable people I would care to know and he has shaped me so much in so many ways. If you are a dad to a little girl, or an old one for that matter, here are a few of the things that my dad did for me that I hope you will do for her.
ability to be vulnerable and honest is one of the reasons that I am capable of admitting my mistakes. It is his own personal standards that hold me to my own, while at the same time elevating them – in my daily living and my interactions with others.
1. Accountability
3. Respect
We recently took a trip together, my parents and me. Several times over the course of the trip, I said to Dad halfjokingly “Stop judging me!” Crazy how, even as a fully grown confident woman, a sideways glance from Dad can pin me to the spot. But all joking aside, it was, and is, his unwavering expectations of me the reason that I hold such expectations of myself. It is because of him that I have any respect (aka awareness) for the passage of time. His own

2. Work Ethic
I come by it honestly, you know... my innate inclination to reclining on the couch with a bowl of popcorn and a good movie or three... But my father is also the reason that I work as hard as I do right now. I cannot come close to the amount or effort of the work that my dad does to this day, but he has truly been an example that I strive to live up to. Not only in the efforts that I put into the work I do, but also into the efforts that I give to my home, my family, and the causes that I believe in.
Not only respect for others. Not only for the maintenance and care of the material things in my care. But most importantly, Dad taught me to respect MYSELF. I remember, if not the words but the intention, of the many, many times that he had to speak to me about how my actions, words and thoughts were of lasting import. He strove to impart upon me the importance of holding myself up in a way that I could be proud of. He taught me to The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

Want to give a young lady the most amazing gift?? My dad thinks I am beautiful. In so very many ways he has influenced my self-image over the years. I can remember him worrying over the image I was displaying at times in high school. I can remember him watching (he still does!) as I did a fashion show of my latest outfits, willing to give me his full attention and commentary. He loves to take my picture (busted him a few times on this latest trip), and he never hesitates to compliment me. My dad is a very real reason that I can like myself at all shapes and sizes (I tend to do that), because he has always made me feel beautiful.

5. My Marriage
As I see it, a girl will choose her husband in one of two ways – she will either choose to marry a man the exact opposite of her dad, or she will choose a man a lot like her dad. I look at how my dad looks at, speaks to and treats my mother. I look at my husband – the wonderful, kind, caring, dedicated and hardworking man that he is – and know that I chose a man like my dad. And I am blessed for that. So to my father, and to all the father’s out there doing their best, Happy Father’s Day. Thank you for helping to set up your children in life. Thank you for being the example. And thank you for showing us your love in the ways that you do. You will never know how important it is. Namaste, Becky

Eyes are the most complex organs you possess, except for your brain.
HEALTH
Eyes are composed of more than two million working parts. They can process 36,000 bits of information every hour. They contribute towards 85% of your total knowledge. They utilize 65% of all the pathways to the brain. Your eyes can instantaneously set in motion hundreds of muscles and organs in your body. In a normal life span, your eyes will bring you almost 24 million images of the world around you. The external muscles that move the eyes are the strongest muscles in the human body for the job that they have to do. The eye is the only part of the human body that can function at 100% ability at any moment, day or night, without rest. Your eyelids need rest, the external muscles of your eyes need rest, the lubrication of your eyes requires replenishment, but your eyes themselves “never” need rest.

Numbers got you going crazy, call us we can help! would break on some of the old, long distance roads in England, because that’s the spacing of the wheel ruts. So who built those old rutted roads? Imperial Rome built the first long distance roads in Europe (including England) for their legions. Those roads have been used ever since. And the ruts in the roads? Roman war chariots formed the initial ruts, which everyone else had to match for fear of destroying their wagon wheels. Since the chariots were made for Imperial Rome, they were all alike in the matter of wheel spacing. Therefore, the United States standard railroad gauge of 4 feet, 8.5 inches is derived from the original specifications for an Imperial Roman war chariot. Bureaucracies live forever. So the next time you are handed a specification/procedure/process and wonder, “What horses a** would come up with this?!” you may be exactly right. Imperial Roman army chariots were made just wide enough to accommodate the rear ends of two war horses. (Two horses a**es.) Now, the twist to the story: When you see a Space Shuttle sitting on its launch pad, there are
two big booster rockets attached to the sides of the main fuel tank. These are solid rocket boosters, or SRBs. The SRBs are made by Thiokol at their factory in Utah. The engineers who designed the SRBs would have preferred to make them a bit fatter, but the SRBs had to be shipped by train from the factory to the launch site. The railroad line from the factory happens to run through a tunnel in the mountains, and the SRBs had to fit through that tunnel. The tunnel is slightly wider than the railroad track, and the railroad track, as you now know, is about as wide as two horses’ behinds. So, a major Space Shuttle design feature of what is arguably the world’s most advanced transportation system was determined over two thousand years ago by the width of a horses a**. And you thought being a horses a** wasn’t important? Ancient horses a**es control almost everything... and CURRENT horses a**es are controlling everything else!

Farmer John
John a call. “How’s the problem with those drivers? Did you put up your sign?”
Farmer John lived on a quiet rural highway. But, as time went by, the traffic built up at an alarming rate. The traffic was so heavy and so fast that his chickens were being run over at a rate of three to six a day.
“Oh, I sure did. And not one chicken has been killed since then. I’ve got to go. I’m very busy.” He hung up the phone.
So one day, Farmer John called the sheriff’s office and said, “You’ve got to do something about all of these people driving so fast and killing all of my chickens.” What do you want me to do?” asked the sheriff. “I don’t care, just do something about those crazy drivers!” So the next day he had the county workers go out and erected a sign that said: SLOW: SCHOOL CROSSING. Three days later, Farmer John called the sheriff and said, “You’ve got to do something about these drivers. The ‘school crossing’ sign seems to make them go even faster.” So, again, the sheriff sends out the county workers and they put up a new sign: SLOW: CHILDREN AT PLAY. That really sped them up. So Farmer John called and called and called every day for three weeks. Finally, he asked the sheriff, “Your signs are doing no good. Can I put up my own sign?” The sheriff told him to go for it. He was going to let the Farmer John do just about anything in order to get him to stop calling everyday to complain. The sheriff got no more calls from Farmer John. Three weeks later, curiosity got the best of the sheriff and he decided to give Farmer
The sheriff was really curious now and he thought to himself, “I’d better go out there and take a look at that sign... it might be something that WE could use to slow down drivers...” So the sheriff drove out to Farmer John’s house, and his jaw dropped the moment he saw the sign. It was spray-painted on a sheet of wood: NUDIST COLONY! GO SLOW AND WATCH OUT FOR THE CHICKS!

When I think of gardening, I picture aged ladies in big hats and frilly gloves gently nipping blooms from their roses; or that’s how it use to be. I guess I
MEN &
Gardening
just assumed, because I do almost all the gardening in my house, that men just don’t want to plant the garden. Yes, I know! I can hear all the moaning and groaning from all the men out there reading this article. I’m big enough to admit I was wrong and lots of men love to garden; just not any I have ever spent time with! Hmm… that should have told me something. Well, men, if you aren’t already gardening, there are plenty of reasons to be doing so and it seems you will find that some of the most celebrated gardeners of our time have been men. There are all sorts of reasons that men should garden, or at least help their wives garden and at the same time teach your children the art of gardening. Let’s make this a family affair.
Reason #1: You know what you are eating.
There are an increasing number of people who focus on eating organically or naturally produced food. That’s well and good, but just because it says organic doesn’t mean that it’s any healthier. Growing your own food will assure you that your food is organic. Plus, the rules for “certified organic” might not be as stringent as you think.
Reason #2: You can save money on food.
There’s a reason that after the economic collapse in 2008, home food gardening increased by over 30% by some estimates. Growing your own fruits and veggies can not only put more green in your fridge and your diet, it can also put more green in your wallet. It is much more economical to grow a hundred heads of lettuce from a seed packet that costs $2 than it is to buy one head of lettuce for $2.

Invite your “someone special” over for a romantic, home-cooked candlelight dinner, and you are sure to impress. Tell your date that you grew the tomato and herbs in the pasta sauce and it will be the icing on the cake. Finish dinner with some home-grown strawberries and you’ve hit the ball out of the park. Gardening demonstrates skill and dedication, and shows that you’ll be able to provide for your future family beyond simply bringing home the bacon.
Reason #4: It can make you more self-sufficient.
Sure, right now obtaining food is as easy as going down to the big box store and grabbing whatever you want off the shelf. But what if some kind catastrophe cut off that steady food supply? Would you have even the foggiest idea as to how to start growing your own grub? Even if the zombie apocalypse is a ways off, it is really satisfying to know that you don’t have to totally rely on distant producers for your food, and that you have the skill-set to turn seeds into sustenance.
Reason #5: Gardening is great exercise.
Perhaps the closest you’ve come to gardening is being a couch potato. Or maybe your idea of health is working on your six-pack abs. Either way; gardening can be a fun way to get in some exercise. Planting, cultivating, harvesting, and lifting are all activities that give you a moderate amount of exercise. You can burn off pounds and increase your health all while growing some tasty grub.
Reason #6: Gardening works as therapy/meditation.
Does life wear you down? Are you stressed? Gardening can be a great way to find inner peace and concentration, clearing out all of the competing thoughts that life brings us. Plus, there’s no better cure for frustration than digging holes or destroying weeds.
Reason #7: Gardening will reconnect you to nature.
We are talking actually getting out of the house/office/parent’s basement and experiencing the great outdoors. It used to be that humans functioned with the natural seasonal cycles, especially when it came to food. Since we have access to fresh produce the whole year at the grocery store, we’ve lost some connection to the seasons and the natural flow of the earth. This is going to be fun; trust me. Transform your plots of grass into gardens bursting with herbs, vegetables, and fruit and it has been proven that people who grow their own food pay more attention to their own health. Before you start planting your NEW garden this year, make a plan, in the northern hemisphere, southern exposure provides plants with the most light. Keep that reality in mind as you begin “drawing” your garden onsite with stakes and string. What are your favourite vegetables? Potatoes, tomatoes, beans, zucchini, lettuce, and carrots are the vegetables I plant in my garden every single year. I seem to have the best luck with these. I also plant parsley, rosemary, sage, basil and dill. The first year with a new garden, plant everything that produces food in your climate zone, to see what grows best, and you’ll learn your personal preferences you might want to have more herbs and fewer vegetables. Try to plant with both a short and longterm strategy in mind. Have fun with your garden. It is not a chore, but a gift; use your imagination. It will make you and your family feels proud watching the labour of your love as your little plants push their way through to life. And remember, the glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature. To nurture a garden is to feed not just on the body, but the soul. ~Alfred Austin Kathryn Hartwell References: artofmanliness.com and menshealth.com

Water, Water Everywhere… The truth of the matter is that water is everywhere. Even on the moon, Mars and various ice balls wandering about our solar system. Some places have more than others but there is still water.
T
he trick? How much is useable? The real bot tom line of having useable water when and where required is economic. Without getting into great huge debates on political will, con servation, climate change or any other casu al light lunch discussion… (quick test: Differ ence between casual and causal? This is really important why?? Hint: correlation)
There is a cost to water use. There must be energy input(s) somewhere into the water use system. The more energy it takes to obtain useable water and dispose of it (waste water treatment) the higher the cost. At some point the cost exceeds the return and a society based decision has to be made. California is making some huge water decisions right now. Domestically, the clothes washer and dishwasher are the two largest appliance water users. While both are such a part of our lives that functioning without is almost inconceivable, we pay through energy, water and sewer bills to use these appliances. We have looked at time and effort savings on HE appliances, but what about water? Dishwashers: new ones really are much more water efficient. By using various cycles (as suggested in your Use & Care Guide) and reduced amounts of water (between 4 – 6 L per load), the efficiencies of an Energy Star rated dishwasher will pleasantly surprise you and your bank account. Tip: Pre-rinsing or hand washing actually reduces your water & energy efficiency and your dishes may not be as clean.

All is still not perfect in the new dishwasher world. If you live in a hard water area you may notice a film or spots on your dishes. Solving this may take checking out different detergents with rinse aid and dishwasher cleaners. Tip: Briefly run the hot water tap in your kitchen sink prior to starting a load in the dishwasher. Many dishwashers do not temperature check or heat the water they take in and your first wash cycle could be almost all cold water.
Because a Great Experience Begins with a Great Agent. TM
Washing Machines: almost all are now high efficiency type. They use so little water that they must have HE detergent to actually wash clothes. Their efficiency and wash method means that they are also easier on the downstream end (water treatment/septic systems) by putting less water, clothing fibres and detergent into the system. Higher spin speeds conserve more energy by reducing the load on your dryer. Tip: If you don’t use your cycle selection (listed in your Use & Care guide) according to your laundry loads, some efficiencies may be lost.
As your real estate agent, I am committed to providing you with the best possible real estate experience. I will offer you an exceptional level of service and knowledge, whatever your real estate needs.
A note on cleaners. At one time dishwashers and washing machines used so much water they pretty much cleaned themselves. With less little water usage, specialty cleaners for these appliances have become more applicable.

cal retailers have some great choices and I’m happy to report that there are lots of budget-friendly ideas. I chose neutral furniture with bright throw pillows to add a pop of summer colour. We then picked some solar lights to add dimension and ambiance and put them in our garden as well as hanging from a pergola. Selling your HOME in summer has some similar rules to selling anytime of the year, and getting your outdoor space ready for listing is key. Here are some suggestions to consider: • Add comfortable-looking, inviting outdoor furniture. • Is your stereo system hooked up to outdoor speakers? If so, be sure to point this out. Play music (softly) outdoors during an open house. • Have a BBQ? Make sure it’s clean and prominently displayed. • Landscape. Plant flowers, pull weeds, thin out any scraggly trees and bushes, and make sure the grass is freshly mowed. • Consider low-maintenance lawn alternatives.
Summer Selling…

Guiding You Over the Steps
Selling your home in the summer is a PRIME time to SELL. And if you have an outdoor living space, summer is the perfect time to promote it in Alberta. Outdoor living spaces includes decks, porches, and patios; 3 season rooms and gardens. They are an extension of your home and are fast becoming an “in demand” area for buyers because these areas create added value, and more space for a family to gather as well as a great way to enjoy the summer months. The key to creating your outdoor living space is to create a cozy area to relax. Consider outdoor furniture, like comfy chaise chairs, love seats, pillows, coffee tables, fireplaces, and lounging areas. Outdoor kitchens also are a great addition to your area. I’ve been shopping lately for some outdoor furnishings and our lo-

Ground covers can be an easy way to make your lawn more attractive. They’re low-maintenance as well, which many busy professionals today will appreciate. • You might also consider adding a deck or patio to your backyard if you don’t have one. It’s an investment, to be sure, but one that often pays for itself and then some. Properties these days take longer to sell, and an outdoor living space is an asset. Consider it an extension of your home. The nicer it looks, the better the interior of your home will look — and, with luck, the easier your job of selling will be! Let us know your thoughts. What Is The Real Estate Cycle And When Is A Good Time To Buy?
S
Spring is upon us, which means that in most parts of the country, we are experiencing an annual phenomena called the annual spring buying season. It’s important for buyers and sellers to understand how this real estate cycle affects the overall value of their property. This cycle is more prominent in markets which are impacted by seasonal changes. For markets that have little variation in the weather (California or Florida, for instance), the real estate cycle is not as pronounced. In Canada, and especially in Alberta, the real estate cycle is very clearly defined. It is common to see slow sales during the winter months when no one wants to be outside. This is because buyers and sellers prefer moving in the spring and summer months to avoid the cold temperatures. Moving boxes in the dead of winter is never a fun idea. During the spring and summer months, sales pick back up and the real estate cycle is at its peak.
Pros and Cons of Buying in the Spring Cycle
Sellers understand that there are more buyers available in the spring market, which means that many sellers will opt to list their property during this time. More supply of buyers means there is a better chance their property will be sold more quickly. Houses also show better in the spring season because they can be dressed up with flowers and nice lawns. Buyers are happy to view houses in the spring. In addition to the weather being nicer, there is more choice of housing stock to look at, which can make the search process better. This is only an advantage in a market downturn because when properties are in demand, buyers will often find themselves in a bidding war. This is why buying in the spring cycle is typically more of an advantage for the seller.
Planning Ahead is Vital
As a homebuyer, understanding the annual real estate cycle will give you an advantage when you are thinking of selling or buying your home. Don’t get caught up in the spring buying rush. If you can hold out until the winter season, there can often be better deals found. Buying property in the winter means that you are up against less competition from other buyers. Enhance Any Space With These Rules
Art Work Installation
Do not overfill a space – furniture placement is key when developing a space which provides good flow and functionality. Scale and balance in the pieces you select are key for this as we do not want one to compete with another. If you have a dominant couch pair with a cleaner lined, lighter accent chair and a glass coffee table as to not use any visual space and balance the larger items. None of the items should compete for attention but have their own intention in the space. It is best to invest in fewer better quality items for a room with strategic placement rather than a collection of pieces.
With the higher ceilings in most homes homeowners often think they need to hang their art work higher then needed. Art work is to be hung at mid-point and eye level so that you can enjoy the piece and have it balance with the rest of the space. On average this is usually 60” from the floor.
Create Zones With Area Rugs For a larger area rug which all your furniture can fit on there should be about one foot of a border at the back of the furniture however this would be quite a large rug. If using a smaller area rug it is still key to have the front legs of all items over the edge of the rug. Anything smaller with throw off the balance of the room and make your furniture items look like they are floating around.
Stay Away From Themes There are many ways to represent a specific design style within your space without being too literal. This can be achieved with texture, pattern, color palette and art. For example if you are looking to achieve a country chic feel you do not need to have roosters throughout the space. Natural linens, a soft and fresh paint hue and some vintage farm items for art work will still drive the concept home.

Layer Your Lighting Different tones of light throughout a space can set any mood, highlight certain items in the space and create depth. Cabinet lighting, artwork spotlighting, dimmer lights, lamps are some additions you could add to your space in order to create this effect.
Interior Design
Emily Hogan is an interior designer from new and local design company Blyss Interiors. Her strong experience in the window covering industry has inspired her to offer those services to Strathmore and area as well as her savvy & stylish design style. If you have any questions for her call her at 403-901-4467 or email to info@ blyssinteriors.ca. She would be happy to hear from you!
Create A Focal Point There should always be a dominant factor in your space in which the rest of the design flows from. This is where your eye is drawn and which anchors the room. This could either be a fire place, bold headboard or a dramatic light fixture above the dining table. Since most homes are open concept these days there is usually one focal point per space and taking into account that this serves as the focal point for more than one area each area needs to flow.
Blyss Int eriors
Most importantly be creative, individual and surround yourself with items that make you happy. I believe it is better to wait for that one décor piece to come along than to simply go by something to fill an area. Purchase items with intention, items that work with the balance and style of the space but also something that speaks to you. The rules above are basic guidelines to setting the space, styling is what makes a house your home.
