In case you needed further proof that the human race is doomed through stupidity, here are some actual label instructions on consumer goods. On a Sears hairdryer - Do not use while sleeping. (Shoot, and that’s the only time I have to work on my hair.) On a bag of Fritos: You could be a winner! No purchase necessary. Details inside. (The shoplifter special?) On a bar of Dial soap: “Directions: Use like regular soap.” (And that would be how???) On some Swanson frozen dinners: “Serving suggestion: Defrost.” (But, it’s “just” a suggestion.) On Tesco’s Tiramisu dessert (printed on bottom): “Do not turn upside down.” (Well... a bit late, ey?!) On Marks & Spencer Bread Pudding: “Product will be hot after heating.” (...and you thought…??) On packaging for a Rowenta iron: “Do not iron clothes on body.” (But wouldn’t this save me more time?) On Boot’s Children Cough Medicine: “Do not drive a car or operate machinery after taking this medication.” (We could do a lot to reduce the rate of construction accidents if we could just get those 5-year-olds with head-colds off those forklifts.) On Nytol Sleep Aid: “Warning: May cause drowsiness.” (And... I’m taking this because...??) On most brands of Christmas lights: “For indoor or outdoor use only.” (As opposed to... what?) On a Japanese food processor: “Not to be used for the other use.” (Now, somebody out there, help me on this. I’m a bit curious.) On Sainsbury’s peanuts: “Warning: contains nuts.” (Talk about a news flash)
On an American Airlines packet of nuts: “Instructions: Open packet, eat nuts.” (Step 3: maybe, uh...fly Delta?) On a child’s Superman costume: “Wearing of this garment does not enable you to fly.” (I don’t blame the company. I blame the parents for this one.) On a Swedish chainsaw: “Do not attempt to stop chain with your hands or genitals.” (Ouch! My goodness... was there a lot of this happening somewhere?)

From the Publishers: WELL, the big news is Aleesha had her baby! Hunter Riley Gosling was born February 15th at 7:52 in the morning after a very long night. He was 6 pounds, 11 ounces and is the most beautiful baby boy I have ever seen. I am now a Grandma and could not be happier. Life changes when you become a Grandma; you just feel different – I can’t really explain it, but I feel different. Now, for all of you who have ordered the “I Am A…” book, don’t get impatient - it’s coming very soon! The final edits and printing changes take way longer than we expected, but I promise you will have it soon. Our March issue has tons of really good reading, including our new column about all the ‘Quirky Stuff’ going on in the world. We have so much to share in this issue – Encana is now sponsoring a non-profit page for all the groups doing such amazing work for the betterment of us all. The Strathmore Whole Health Expo is March 31st - April 1st, and you will find all the information in this issue. Also, the Strathmore Pet Expo is back!! YAY! We have a Home Shopping Parties page with all sorts of cool stuff, and check out the yoga article submitted by our very own Strathmore teacher Becky Stone. I could go on and on about all the new information in this issue, but you just have to make time to sit down and enjoy the magazine! We do this for you so keep sending your ideas – you, our loyal readers, make this whole magazine possible. When you support our advertisers, you are also supporting us. Striptease
Cletus was passing by Billy Bob’s hay barn one day when, through a gap in the door, he sees Billy Bob doing a slow and sensual striptease in front of an old green John Deere tractor. Buttocks clenched, Billy Bob performed a slow pirouette, and then gently removed the right strap of his overalls, followed by the left. He then hunched his shoulders forward, and in a classic striptease move, let his overalls fall down to his hips, revealing a torn and frayed plaid shirt. Grabbing both sides of his shirt he ripped it apart to reveal his stained tee shirt underneath. With a final flourish, he tore the tee shirt from his body and hurled his baseball cap onto a pile of hay. Having seen enough, Cletus rushed in and yelled, “What the heck are you doing, Billy Bob?” “Jeez, Cletus, ya scared the bejeezers out of me!” replied an obviously embarrassed Billy Bob. “But me and the ole lady been having trouble lately in the bedroom department, and the therapist suggested I do something sexy to a tractor.”

WEEPING WILLOW (the Melancholy) - beautiful but full of melancholy, attractive, very empathetic, loves anything beautiful and tasteful, loves to travel, dreamer, restless, capricious, honest, can be influenced but is not easy to live with, demanding, good intuition, suffers in love but finds sometimes an anchoring partner.
14A BAYSIDE PLACE. STRATHMORE, AB
OAK TREE (the Brave) - robust nature, courageous, strong, unrelenting, independent, sensible, does not like change, keeps its feet on the ground, person of action.
Monday-Friday: 8am-5pm Saturdays: 8am-12pm. Sundays: Closed
#1 Highway
LIME TREE (the Doubt) - accepts what life dishes out in a composed way, hates fighting, stress, and labor, dislikes laziness and idleness, soft and relenting, makes sacrifices for friends, many talents but not tenacious enough to make them blossom, often wailing and complaining, very jealous but loyal. HAZELNUT TREE (the Extraordinary) - charming, undemanding, very understanding, knows how to make an impression, active fighter for social cause, popular, moody, and capricious lover, honest, and tolerant partner, precise sense of judgment.
Pisces. Feb 19 - March 20 Pisces - The Fish They are honest, unselfish, trustworthy and often have quiet dispositions. They can be overcautious and sometimes gullible. These qualities can cause the Pisces to be taken advantage of, which is unfortunate as this sign is beautifully gentle, and generous. In the end, however, the Pisces is often the victor of ill circumstance because of his/her intense determination. They become passionately devoted to a cause – particularly if they are championing for friends or family.
Aries. March 21 – April 19
www.thenewsyneighbour.com
Aries people are creative, adaptive, and insightful. They can be driven and are very ambitious often making them over-achievers. Aries are fire signs, and so too is their personality. They may be quick to anger, but don’t take it personally, it’s just their fiery, passionate personalities showing through. Aries signs have excellent sense of humour, and they get along with almost everyone at the party (and they DO know how to party). Aries can be impatient, but we love them anyway because they are devoted friends, lovers and family members – they are loyal to then end and will fight for their causes.

Must-See Sporting Events for 2012!
The ski industry is very similar to farming. You can be the most brilliant marketing mind in the world, but if Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate and you have a bad snow year, skiers and boarders will likely look for better options! The same goes for farming. I don’t care how much of a green thumb you have; if Mother Nature deals you a bad hand, the best farmers in the world are likely filing an insurance claim. Considering it’s been such a mild winter in Southern Alberta with very little snow, it got me wondering how this has affected the local ski industry. When a golf course opens in Calgary in January you may not be thinking about hitting the slopes. “It’s been a very good snow year,” according to Lake Louise senior sales and marketing manager Mike Moynihan. “One of our best snow years in ten years actually.” “Thanks to social media like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, the ski community does a lot of the marketing for us,” says Moynihan. “It doesn’t matter that there is very little snow in Calgary because the skiers and riders are posting their own video and experiences online and this really helps to get the message out. We have seen increased hits on our webcam as well, so our guests know exactly what kinds of conditions to expect.” So has it been a good year as far as the skier visits go? “Unfortunately, our international numbers are down as we have seen a decrease in visits from the U.K.,” says Moynihan. “But our numbers from Calgary and Southern Alberta have been very strong.” Spring skiing is always my favourite time of the year to hit the slopes and the Lake Louise Ski area has some fantastic Ski and Stay packages. You can also check out the great deal on the new 2012 Spring Pass. Louise will be wide open until May 6th and for all the details, go to their website www. skilouise.com.
Alberta Ski Check Program While I was skiing at Lake Louise last month I had the pleasure to have lunch with Cpl. Jeff Campbell of the Lake Louise RCMP detachment. Campbell is an avid skier and he is a driving force behind reviving the Alberta Ski Check Program. The last thing anyone wants to experience at the end of the day is to lose an expensive pair of skis or a high-end snowboard. The key is awareness, according to Campbell. “We have become a little complacent over the years,” he says. “It is as simple as investing in a ski lock or engraving your driver’s license between the bindings with an engraving pen.” It is rare that stolen equipment will be reunited with its owner, especially if authorizes have no way or know whose ski or snowboard they have found if there is no identifying marker. There is a good chance stolen equipment will end up in the pawn shops but this is unlikely if the pawn shop owners are following the rules and recording all engraving marks.
The Bozo Cup The Rob Bosinger Memorial Race Weekend will once again take place at Mount Norquay on April 6th, 7th and 8th, 2012. Rob, a.k.a. Bozo, was a former National team skier and coach who died suddenly in his sleep May 20th, 2005 of cardiac arrhythmia. The ski community comes together for the weekend to celebrate Rob’s life and passion for the sport. It’s a fun weekend for the entire family with head to head racing for all abilities. The event is in support of the Canadian SADS foundation. Go to bozocup.com for all the event details.
The Slush Cup It has been voted as one of the best spring events in North America. The 84th Slush Cup will close the ski season at Sunshine Village on May 21st, 2012. If you are wild or crazy enough to ride or ski into a pool of ice cold slush water, this event is for you. Prizes for Awesome Air, Best Belly Flop and Excellent Enema, however, it my books, it’s better to be a spectator and cheer on the participants. Page 14

New Survivor Show Have you heard about the next planned “Survivor” show? 6 men will be dropped on an island with 1 van and 4 kids each, for 6 weeks. Each kid plays two sports and either takes music or dance classes. There is no access to fast food. Each man must take care of his 4 kids, keep his assigned house clean, correct all homework, complete science projects, cook, do laundry, etc. The men only have access to television when the kids are asleep and all chores are done. There is only one TV between them and there is no remote. The men must shave their legs and wear makeup daily, which they must apply themselves either while driving or while making four lunches. They must attend weekly PTA meetings, clean up after their sick children at 3:00 a.m, make an Indian hut model with six toothpicks, a tortilla and one marker, and get a 4-year old to eat a serving of peas. The kids vote them off based on performance. The winner gets to go back to his job! www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Perfect love sometimes does not come until grandchildren are born. ~Welsh Proverb~
FAMILY PAGE MARCH Grandma and Grandpa are always invited to all of our family dinners; it just does not feel the same when they do not attend. They have not lived together for many a year, but always seem pleased to share family time together, visiting with all the kids. Every year I wonder how much longer they will be around to share in these special family gatherings, so we make sure they are always included in the conversations. I recently bought my father a tape recorder and asked him to share stories of his youth and growing up, but he seems a little intimidated by the whole thing, so last time they were here, which was at Christmas, we sat around the table and just chatted. I asked lots of questions and we ended up getting two sides of the tape filled. It’s a great idea and you would be surprised at the things you didn’t know about them.
Grandparents
All grandmothers like letters. Even if they just consist of a squiggle and a dirty finger mark. Grandparents are the head, and the heart, of a family. But sometimes they feel they are on the outside. So at your next Sunday dinner table, or at the crazy, loud family reunion, try to pull Grandma and Grandpa into the conversations. This is how you get the ball rolling.
The Five Must Have Conversations with Grandma and Grandpa The "Who Are We?" Conversation:
The "Who Are We?" conversation is a conversation that situates grandma and grandpa as the expert on family heritage and family lines. This question helps grandparents to share the legacy of all of your ancestors that have gone before. Ask them about where your ancestors originated, where the family name came from and other family history. Find out what they know about their parents and grandparents and great grandparents. What occupations did they have, were they educated? What were their religious traditions? Has there been genealogy performed for them? Remember that they probably have more information in their heads about your family history, than you could ever find in a life time of searching. Invite them to explain what it means to come from the family line they did. Have them explain in detail as many stories about their family as they can remember. Discuss the marriages, illnesses, successes and disappointments of the family line. Make sure that your children are all paying attention for the short discussions around the dinner table or living room. By learning grandparents' important stories we not only learn who we are, but what we can become. Opening Question: "Grandma and Grandpa, tell us what you remember about your grandparents and parents. What were they like? What made them special?"
I thought I had forgotten how to hold a baby ~ but my arms remember.
The "Who are You?" Conversation
The "Who Are You?" conversation is a discussion specifically about your grandparents and their life together. The goal of the "Who Are You?" conversation is to literally get to know your grandparents as much or even more than you know your closest friends. Learn what made them tick, pick up their stories and understand all you can from their lives and learn to incorporate them into your life. Use this conversation to discuss your grandparent's favourite things as a child, their likes and dislikes, their hobbies, happiest moments and hide outs. Have them explain what made them feel strong and what they were most insecure about. Have them discuss their best times together, ask them to discuss information about their marriage proposal and wedding day. Have them share how they decided which occupation to pursue or how many children they wanted to have. Ask them to share with you specific stories about the hardest parts of their lives and the most satisfying times of their life. What was their purpose in life? What rules did they live by and what lessons did they learn? Opening Question: "Grandma and Grandpa, when you think of one of your happiest memories in your earlier days, what is it? What was it about that event that made you so happy?"
The "Who Am I?" Conversation?
The "Who Am I?" conversation is one where we begin to learn who we are through the eyes of our grandparents. One of the best questions I've ever found to open up the "Who Am I?" conversation is something like, "Grandpa and Grandma, when you look around at all of these children and grandchildren, what do you see?" One of the greatest ways to know who you really are is to ask someone who loves you unconditionally and nobody really does that better than your grandparents. Ask them to go around the room and tell things that they respect about their children and grandchildren. Ask them about how they feel about the world today with all of the new technology and activities going on. Ask them to compare their lives to the lives of their grandchildren. Ask them for specific examples of what they value and love about each of their grandchildren and children. Although this can be an uncomfortable conversation, tell them how much it means to those who will receive the answers. Opening Question: "Grandpa and Grandma, when you look around at all of these children and grandchildren, what do you see in us?"
The "What Matters Most?" Conversation
The greatest benefit of getting older is usually the fact that you've also gotten wiser. The wisdom of our grandparents will be wasted if we do not ask them to share it with us. The "What Matters Most?" conversation is simply where we defer to the expertise of our grandparents, and ask them to share with us what they have learned really matters most in life. Ask them to comment on the values and goals of the world and where we, as a family, may need to recalibrate. Ask them to share the specific stories that taught them what truly matters most. Also, create a space where they give negative examples that can be accepted and appreciated just as much as the positive examples. Opening Question: "Grandma and Grandpa, in all of your years of experiencing life and what it has to offer, what are the three things that you have found really matter most and why do they matter so much to you?"
Tips for Parents:
1. Plan an outing with grandparents and grandkids. This is a great opportunity to have fun and spend some quality family time. 2. Arrange for your kids to do chores at their grandparent's house. Not only will your parents appreciate the help, your kids will get to learn a thing or two about the family. 3. Plan family meals together where everyone puts away their electronics. Not only does this teach manners, it's a great opportunity talk about your family and what’s happening in everyone's life.

The Newsy Neighbour
Noah’s Ark 2001 If Noah had lived in the United States in the year 2001, his story may have gone something like this: The Lord spoke to Noah, and said, “In one year, I am going to make it rain and the rain shall not stop until it submerges the entire earth and all living flesh is destroyed. Because of this, I want you to save the righteous people and two of every living species on earth. Therefore, I am commanding you to build an Ark.” In a flash of lightning, God delivered the specifications for an Ark. Daunted by this task, but respectful of God’s wishes, Noah took the plans and agreed to build the ark. “Remember,” said the Lord, “you must complete the Ark and fill it in one year’s time.” Exactly a year later, fierce storm clouds covered the earth and all the seas of the earth went into a tumult. The Lord saw that Noah was sitting in his front yard weeping. “Noah!” He shouted. “Where is the Ark?” “Lord, please forgive me,” cried Noah. “I did my best, but there were big problems. First, I had to get a permit for construction, and your plans did not meet the building codes. I had to hire an engineering firm and redraw the plans. Then I got into a fight with OSHA over whether or not the Ark needed a sprinkler system and approved floatation devices. Then, my neighbour objected, claiming I was violating zoning ordinances by building the Ark in my front yard, so I had to get a variance from the city planning commission. Then, I had problems getting enough wood for the Ark, because there was a ban on cutting trees to protect the Spotted Owl. I finally convinced the US Forest Service that I really needed the wood to save the owls. However, the Fish and Wildlife Service won’t let me take the 2 owls. The carpenters formed a union and went on strike. I had to negotiate a settlement with the National Labor Relations Board before anyone would pick up a saw or hammer. Now, I have 16 carpenters on the Ark, but still no owls. When I started rounding up the other animals, an animal rights group sued me. They objected to me taking only two of each kind aboard. This suit is pending. Meanwhile, the EPA notified me that I could not complete the Ark without filing an environmental impact statement on your proposed flood. They didn’t take very kindly to the idea that they had no jurisdiction over the conduct of the taxes. All I had was a notice from Creator of the Universe. Then, the Army Corps of Engineers demanded a map of the proposed flood plain. I sent them a globe. Right now, I am trying to resolve a complaint filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission that I am practicing discrimination by not taking atheists aboard. The IRS has seized my assets, claiming that I’m building the Ark in preparation to flee the country to avoid paying the state that I owe them some kind of user tax and failed to register the Ark as a “recreational water craft.” And, finally, the ACLU got the courts to issue an injunction against further construction of the Ark, saying that since God is flooding the earth, it’s a religious event, and, therefore unconstitutional. I really don’t think I can finish the Ark for another five or six years.” Noah waited. The sky began to clear, the sun began to shine, and the seas began to calm. A rainbow arced across the sky. Noah looked up hopefully. “You mean you’re not going to destroy the earth, Lord?” “No,” He said sadly. “I don’t have to. The government already has.” www.thenewsyneighbour.com

how it makes me feel. And I have learned how to meditate – and if there is one thing that is priceless about what I have learned in yoga it is how to meditate. I crave the time alone and quiet, staring at that beautiful dark space behind my eyes and listening to the sound of my breath. It doesn’t matter if you can’t touch your toes- modifications and props are available so that every BODY can practice the postures on some level or another. If you can breathe you can “do” yoga, and it’s just as simple as that. Hatha Yoga with Becky Stone 403-710-4294 becky.stone.e@hotmail.com
Himalayan Crystal Salt – A Natural Way to Healing
Yoga in Real Life I have so many people say, “Oh I can’t do yoga; I’m just not flexible”. Now, since I am a yoga teacher (insert constant Zen state here), it just wouldn’t look good if I took them around the shoulders and gave them a shake, but I have to say, sometimes I have to resist that. Some of the most amazing experiences I have had in yoga have happened while I was lying on my back, covered in a blanket with a pillow under my head and a bolster under my knees... and some of my most beautiful students are those that can barely move because of pain and mobility issues. Yoga is not about how flexible you are. Yoga is about learning about your body and what is accomplished by becoming aware of your breath. Now, when you have a body that has not been well loved (or too well loved...) sometimes the prospect of trying to “do” yoga can be a little intimidating – we all see those pictures of welltoned and seemingly double-jointed bodies contorting into odd shapes and then walking around toting peace and love. Let me tell you right now... I am not one of those bodies (ok, I admit the love and peace part) but I wake up sore and stiff and on the wrong side of the bed some mornings, I have to go the chiropractor because I looked up and put my neck out, I have to resist locking my children in their rooms when they won’t do as I say (ok, maybe sometimes I do that anyway), and I struggle with the extra Christmas pounds (and Valentine’s Day pounds... Easter...Thanksgiving...). But I love yoga. I love it so much I want everyone to try it, learn it and love it too. And this is why: Yoga has made me a better me. I breathe better, I notice my breath more, and my breath teaches me about me. I have learned to be nicer, more gentle and compassionate to myself. So now I am gentler and more compassionate to those around me. I now have the tools to release stress and anger and fear from my body. I am more mindful of the food I eat and Page 26

What do you really know about Himalayan Crystal Salt? How does it help the body heal naturally? Is it the same as the table salt? These are all very important questions; now let’s get some answers. First, most of us do not know too much about Himalayan Crystal Salt and its benefits, but the real question should be “how much do we really know about table salt?” Did you know that the standard table salt is known as “The Health Destroyer” because it is actually full of many forms of chemicals and even sugar? Table salt is composed of 97.5% sodium chloride and 2.5% chemicals like iodine and absorbents, and sugar. It is also dried at more than 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit, which kills all the natural chemical structures of naturally-occurring salt. Table salt is energetically dead and thus the body has to use enormous amounts of energy to keep the body hydrated, in turn creating unnecessary burden on the elimination systems in the body. In doing so, water is removed from other cells in the other systems in an attempt to neutralize the unnatural sodium chloride found in table salt, processed food, salt used in restaurants and homes. There are studies that show that each gram of table salt we use cannot be processed and the body will use over twenty times the amount of cellular water to neutralize the sodium chloride in the chemically-treated salt; thus creating water retention, cellulite, rheumatism, arthritis, gout, kidney and gallbladder stones. This is a serious problem that we all need to address, knowing that we eat about 5,000 mg of sodium chloride a day! Just by replacing all uses of table salt, cooking salt and brine salt with Himalayan Crystal Salt, we can help restore the precious water we need in our bodies to maintain healthy and happy body systems. Himalayan Crystal Salt is known as the “white gold”. It is untouched and in its pure form of salt. These crystals are formed into salt over millions of years under extreme pressure, creating a situation in which zero exposure to toxins and impurities. Himalayan crystal salts have a unique cellular structure that allows it to store vibrational energy and is in its colloidal form, making it tiny enough for our cells to easily absorb. They can benefit the body by: • controlling the water levels in the body • balancing the pH in every cell of the body including the brain • balancing of blood sugar • helps with the reducing the common sign of aging • supports healthy respiratory functions • helps in reducing muscle cramps • helps increase bone strength • helps promote healthy sleep patterns. Just by knowing what you know now, what do you choose to use: “Table Salt” or “Himalayan Crystal Salt”? I choose naturally, Himalayan Crystal Salt! To find out how you can purchase Himalayan Crystal Salt, go to www. healing-begins.com or give Cynthia a call at 403-934-6416 to find out more information. By Cynthia Barnesky

Strathmore Whole Health Expo
"What does whole health mean to you?”
I am Becky Stone, and am blessed to be the Chairperson of the Strathmore Whole Health Expo. Health means so many different things to so many! To me it means feeling in balance and finding happiness in each and every day. Our lives are a journey towards understanding - our physical and emotional bodies, our spirituality, our relationships with the people in our life and the world around us. My wish is that the Strathmre Whole Health Expo will become a place of education – How can we achieve better Whole Health and how can we do it right here in our homes and in our community! I am blessed to be working with a diverse group of passionate and intelligent women. I believe that our diversity will only bring a more rounded perspective to the show. Here is how they feel about health and the Expo: “Personal growth/whole health is my passion. From my own life experience, it has been this journey towards finding that delicate balance between body, mind and soul that has been most fulfilling. It is my hope in being a part of this society to provide the people of Strathmore, access to and information about alternative and complimentary health care options within our own community and to encourage all of you to 'take your health into your hands'”. Donna Shortt - Expo Committee Treasurer “I believe this is an incredibly necessary Expo. I want people to know how to take charge of their own health and find way s to relieve their symptoms and be as healthy as they can be. You only get one body. I encourage everyone to get involved, learn what is available nearby so you can improve your health or prevent illness and live your best healthy life.” Connie McDonald - Expo Committee Secretary “I believe health is a life long journey. Our bodies, minds and souls are our vehicles, and traditional and alternative medicine the tools to keep us running. You need to know what tools to use to fix a problem with a vehicle and that's what I think the Expo can do – provide education, and therefore choices, about tools.” Lorraine Hammermeister - Expo Committee Member “Health is choice that no one else can make for you. To many this is a very intimidating prospect, but for myself It is very empowering. Through seeking optimal health for myself and my family I have been introduced to an amazing array of alternative therapies, people, resources and ideas which uplift and empower our lives. For this reason I find the whole health expo to be a very important step in empowering people to take their health into their own hands and to realize that they have options in abundance.” Mandy Musselman - Expo Committee Member “Health is an all encompassing way of life. It tends to have a domino effect, in that, if its not balanced it all falls apart. That is why I am excited about the Whole Health Expo as it addresses all aspects of health. Body and Sole. Helping the individual to families, enabling them to get the most out of life, and what it has to offer.” Tracey Stokoe - Expo Committee Member

Doctor I recently picked a new primary care doctor. After two visits and exhaustive lab tests, he said I was doing ‘fairly well’ for my age (I had just turned 65). A little concerned about that comment, I couldn’t resist asking him, ‘Do you think I’ll live to be 80?’ e asked, ‘Do you smoke tobacco, or drink beer or wine?’ ‘Oh no,’ I replied.. ‘I’m not doing drugs, either!’ Then he asked, ‘Do you eat rib-eye steaks and barbecued ribs?’ I said, ‘Not much... My former doctor said that all red meat is very unhealthy!’ ‘Do you spend a lot of time in the sun, like playing golf, sailing, hiking, or bicycling?’ ‘No, I don’t,’ I said. He asked, ‘Do you gamble, drive fast cars, or have a lot of sex?’ ‘No,’ I said. He looked at me and said, ‘Then, why do you even care?’

WHEN TO APPLY MOISTURIZER? The most effective time to apply moisturizer is right after you get out of a shower. It is the best way for your moisturizer to soak into your skin. The best beauty tip for skin care during the winter is to MOISTURIZE!!! Do not miss putting your moisturizer on each day. It will help protect your skin from the harsh cold air, leaving it soft and hydrated. Submitted by Shirra Turner

Understanding Engineers:
Two engineering students were walking across a university campus when one said, “Where did you get such a great bike?” The second engineer replied, “Well, I was walking along yesterday, minding my own business, when a beautiful woman rode up on this bike, threw it to the ground, took off all her clothes and said, “Take what you want..” The first engineer nodded approvingly and said, “Good choice; the clothes probably wouldn’t have fit you anyway.”

I Am A Squash Hi, my name is Summer, and I am a Squash. My twin sister, Winter, and I argued over who would get to write this – she calls me immature, but hey, I won, so what do I care?! In addition to Sis and I, there are several other kinds of squash, including Acorn, Big Max, Butternut, Gem, Kabocha, Pattypan, Red kuri, Spaghetti, and Yellow crookneck. We’re members of the Cucurbita family, along with pumpkins, zucchini, even some melons and cucumbers. I like to think of all of us as extremely efficient – efficient as in you can eat every bit of us – skin, seeds, flesh and all. In fact even our shots, leaves, and tendrils can be eaten as greens, and our blossoms are an important ingredient in some Native American dishes. HISTORY People have been doing just that with squash for upwards of 10,000 years. We first appeared on the map in what is now Mexico. In fact, when a handful of oversized squash seeds were discovered in a Mexican cave in the 1960s, the previously held theory that at least some humans in the Americas gave up hunting and gathering for farming less than 5,000 years ago, was blown out of the water. I hope all those deer and antelope out there we saved were grateful! Eventually we ended up traveling both north and south – we’ve been an essential crop in the Andes region of South America since well before Columbus’ arrival in the late 1400s. Meanwhile in North America, many Native peoples referred to us as one of the “Three Sisters” – squash, along with maize and beans, was one of the three pillars of their diet. These early farmers were very smart – they usually planted all three crops close together, with cornstalks providing support for climbing beans, and shade for us. We squash contributed by spreading our vines out, providing ground cover and limiting weeds. Finally the beans chipped in by producing nitrogen for all three of us. Talk about teamwork! Early European explorers brought squash seeds back with them from the Americas. Squash cultivation eventually spread to North Africa, the Middle East, China and Japan. It was a Native American nation that gave us the English word “squash,” which was derived from the Narragansett language, as documented by none other than Roger Williams, the founder of Rhode Island, in his 1643 blockbuster, A Key Into the Language of America. HEALTH We squash contain lots of cancer-fighting phytonutrients. In fact squash juice, like juices derived from leeks, pumpkins, and radishes can help prevent cell mutations, always a good thing. We’re an excellent source of manganese, vitamin C, vitamin A, fiber, potassium, folate, copper, riboflavin, and phosphorus. Many of these nutrients have been shown in studies to be helpful in the prevention of heart disease, heart attack, high blood pressure, stroke, and lowering high cholesterol levels. We’re also rich in dietary fibre, an excellent bulwark against colon cancer, aided by our stores of folate, vitamin C, and betacarotene. I’m delighted to tell you that summer squash in particular are helpful in reducing in reducing the painful symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis – take that, Winter! I know most of you think of us as a vegetable, but we’re really a fruit, botanically speaking (we take care of our own seeds, thanks very much). We can be served fresh in salads, baked, cooked, or fried. Small squash, like pattypans, are excellent for pickling. No matter how you decide to prepare us, I think you’ll find us tasty. I’ve provided a few simple recipes here to get you started. Take care, Summer Squash
You can bake pretty much any Squash this way – the favorite in our family is Spaghetti Squash all the kids love it – except Tifannie.
BAKED SQUASH
1 acorn squash, halved 2 Tbsp. butter 2 Tsp. honey or pure maple syrup 2 Tbsp. firmly packed brown sugar Salt and coarsely-ground black pepper to taste Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Cut squash in half lengthwise (from stem to end). Use a spoon to scoop out the seeds and stringy stuff in the center of each squash half. Score the insides of each half several times with a sharp knife. Add 1 Tbsp. of butter, 1 teaspoon of honey, honey (maple syrup or hickory syrup), 1 Tbsp. of brown sugar, salt and pepper to the hollow scoop of each squash half. Place each half in a large baking pan, cut side up. Add about approximately 1/4-inch of water to the bottom of the baking pan so that the skins don't burn and the squash doesn't get dried out. Bake approximately 1 hour or until tender when flesh is poked with a fork. Remove from oven and let cool a little before serving. Spoon any buttery sugar sauce that has not already been absorbed by the squash over the exposed areas. This recipe is great for a BBQ and you can make it the day before.
How to Select Choose squash that are firm and fairly heavy for their size, otherwise they may be dry and cottony inside. Look for squash that have bright, glossy exteriors. Avoid buying squash that have knicks or bruises on their skins or ones that have soft spots. Storage Place summer squash in plastic bags and store in the refrigerator. Fresh summer squash should keep for up to a week. Thicker-shinned varieties such as chayote will stay fresh for two weeks or longer.
MARINATED ZUCCHINI SUMMER SQUASH
AND
2 Tbsp. White wine vinegar 2 Tbs. Fresh lemon juices 1 Tbsp. Minced garlic 2 Tsp. Chopped fresh Thyme Salt and fresh ground pepper 1/3 Cup Extra-virgin olive oil 1 pound zucchini, trimmed and sliced diagonally about ¼-inch thick 1 pound yellow crookneck squash, cut the same. Whisk the vinegar, lemon juice, garlic and thyme in a large bowl – season with salt and pepper. Spoon 3 Tbs.of the marinade into a small bowl. Cover and set aside. Toss the squash in the remaining marinade and transfer to a large glass-baking dish. Cover and marinate at room temperature for 3 hours or overnight in the refrigerator. Prepare the BBQ for medium-high heat and grill the vegetables until they are crisptender and brown, about 8 minutes. Transfer to a platter and drizzle the reserved marinade and serve hot. These are really yummy and quite easy to make, a great snack food or a side dish for almost any meal. You will make these over and over again.
SQUASH AND ZUCCHINI CAKES
3 Medium Zucchini 3 Medium yellow squash 1 Cup toasted bread crumbs 1 Cup shredded Parmesan 1/3 Cup minced sweet onion (the purple ones) 1 large egg, lightly beaten 1 ½ Tsp. Dried Italian seasoning ½ Tsp. Salt ¼ Tsp. Pepper ½ Cup butter and your favourite Marinara sauce. Grate Zucchini and squash with a fine grater and press between paper towels to remove excess moisture. In a medium bowl combine zucchini, squash and all remaining ingredients – except butter and shape into 2- inch patties, press together firmly. Brown in large skillet over medium heat about 4 minutes per side – serve with marinara sauce. The chillies in this recipe give it a spicyzesty flavour; if you don’t like that, don’t use the chillies.
SQUASH CASSEROLE
2 Ounces of butter 2 Cups diced yellow onion 2 pounds sliced yellow squash 1 pound cubed cheddar cheese 8 ounces canned diced green chillies 10 ounces cream of celery soup ¾ Cup bread crumbs
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Melt half the butter in a large skillet over medium heat and sauté onion until soft. In a separate skillet, sauté the squash in the remaining butter until soft – drain the excess liquid from the squash. Butter a casserole dish and combine the onion, squash, cheese, green chillies and soup. Bake until the cheese is well melted. Remove from oven, stir, and sprinkle breadcrumbs on top. Return to oven and bake 5 – 10 minutes or until the breadcrumbs are golden. A Great comfort food for those cold rainy days, in which we seem to be having a lot of lately Enjoy your garden and your squash. Summer Squash

AGES AND STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT FOUR TO SIX MONTHS By Jeanette MacKay, Reprinted
As their children’s first teachers, caregiving parents and families play a key role in providing children with the skills, tools and confidence they need to fulfill their potential, succeed at learning and grow into healthy, productive adults. This is the second in a series of articles on child development written to help parents and caregivers recognize and understand the ages and stages of a child’s physical, emotional, social and intellectual development during the first five years. These are only guidelines as every child is unique with their own personality, learning style and family background. There are, however, some general similarities that can help you recognize the stages of development and offer a nurturing environment where your child may develop to their full potential. Kidz 1st Network Parent Link Centre also offers developmental screening so that you can monitor and celebrate your child’s progress, or access information for early intervention when this seems appropriate. During the fourth to sixth month babies are developing at an incredible rate. They are becoming very social little persons and love to talk and be with people. Month 4 – Baby will roll from side to side when lying on stomach and lifts his head and chest while supporting self on arms. He reaches for objects and grasps them with a mitten grasp (between fingers and palm of hand with thumb extended). He starts to explore objects by bringing them to his mouth. Baby can hold his head steady when supported in a sitting position and will turn his head to discover where sound is coming from. Baby has a mental ‘picture’ of those close to him and is beginning to show when he’s not sure of someone or if he is afraid when a new person moves toward him. He shows anticipation and excitement by breathing heavily and will laugh out loud. He gazes into your eyes and makes social gestures such as waving his arms and kicking his legs in an effort to be picked up. Month 5 – The fifth month sets the stage for more interactive developmental growth. Baby babbles words such as baba, dada, and mama and will look up when she hears her own name. She starts to show emotions like fear and anger and will push away from things she doesn’t like. Baby likes to look in the mirror and will respond to her mirror image, she starts to connect eyes and fingers and touches, holding and tasting everything. She will bring her feet to her mouth and suck on her toes. She rolls from stomach to back and pushes with her hands and brings her knees up when on her tummy. Your baby will sit supported for long periods of time and when held in a standing position will stamp her feet and jump up and down. She enjoys using repetitive action such as dropping and picking up objects. Month 6 – Baby vocalizes pleasure and displeasure. He has strong likes and dislikes about food. He is starting to drink from a sippy cup and attempts to feed himself. He will look for a familiar person or pet when their name is Page 34
The Newsy Neighbour
called. Baby will transfer objects from hand to hand and use his hands to bang and splash. He is very curious and will look at and study things for a long time. He enjoys picking things up, shaking them and listening to sounds. Baby rolls from back to stomach and stomach to back and will pull himself up by your hands from lying on his back. Baby will get on hands and knees in a crouch position and rock back and forth or perhaps move backward and forward. He has conversation by babbling and copies some of your facial expressions. Baby will turn his head when he hears his name. Comfort, play with, and teach your child by providing the appropriate motor and sensory stimulation. Your baby loves to be with people and interact with them by using a lot of conversation and observation. For quiet times and to comfort baby; rock, talk, sing, and read books. To strengthen baby’s back, hips, and arms in preparation for crawling create games that move baby’s limbs or hold baby in a standing position on your lap while talking or singing to him. Encourage baby to roll over and stretch by placing favorite toys nearby. Prop baby in a sitting position and lie down on the floor facing him encouraging interactive play. Pass toys back and forth, play hide and seek with toys by covering them with a scarf or container, roll a ball toward him, play ‘This Little Piggy Went to Market’. Use toys with different textures and toys that make sounds. Let baby explore his world in as many ways as possible, talking about what you are experiencing together and giving him lots of praise. Your baby is becoming an active member of the family and you will see some truly awesome changes during this time. ENJOY!

The grocery store? The local butcher? Chicken farmers tend to listen to feed reps and feed company nutritionists – use pharmaceuticals and bird development. Some chicken farmers get to a point where they wonder: is there a better way of producing chickens without the use of growth promoters (antibiotics)? It can be done! Nutrition is also a huge issue in raising chickens. When animals are fed the best nutrition available, it results in getting the highest quality
of meat. And this doesn’t go just for chickens; it goes for all animals. Purchasing meat from a reputable farmer not only gets you drug-free and healthy meat, but a farmer/consumer relationship. More and more people today want to know where their food comes from, be assured that it was grown/raised properly and that it is healthy and safe for them. The main focus should always be food safety, quality and flavour. The goal should be to provide customers with safe products that taste great at reasonable prices. Never get jealous when you see your ex with someone else, because our parents taught us to give our used toys to the less fortunate! Gardening as a Hobby In this fast-paced life we live, it is good to have a hobby. Gardening can be that something to help us cope with our busy lives and the stresses of day-to-day living. Gardening is just the ticket to take your mind off your worries for a short time. You can dive into your garden as much or as little as you want. As a gardener, I have all kinds of clients. Some people want to do everything, they just need to know what to put where. Some people need the spring clean-up done so they can get to work with the planting, others want to work a small part of the garden and would prefer I work the rest of the gardens. Then there is my favourite; they want the garden to look pretty, but they do not have time or energy to work the garden. They want to come home and just enjoy their garden. There are several steps to making a beautiful garden. First, start with the plans. I like to look at pictures, some from my garden last year, others from gardens in magazines. I then decide what I want to keep, what to move, and what to get rid of. When you have made your notes and drawn your pictures, it is time to decide on the plants. Every year I pick a plant that I’m not familiar
with and add it to my garden. I like to see if it’s going to work in my area, will I like how it looks, etc. Some I love and have kept, others I either do not like as much or they were poor performers in my garden. When you plan your garden out, use all of your senses. Plant herbs or certain flowers for their smell; plant some flowers for their colour. I like to plant a few things because I like to touch them, like snap dragons (they can talk), or lamb’s ears (they feel so fuzzy), etc. You know what I’m saying; we all have plants that we like. Some I plant to draw in the birds or butterflies. Plant things that you like that make you want to stay in your garden. I have watched a bumble bee wake up on the head of alliums. I can tell you all kinds of stories about garden life. I think gardens are wonderful, magical places, filled with all kinds of great stories. After a hectic week at work, fighting traffic, meeting deadlines, etc. it is nice to have a place to retreat to for a couple of hours, filled with wonderful sights and smells. Learn to relax and enjoy the beauty in your own yard. As you work in your garden week after week, you will notice when and where the flowers come up. Already you will be thinking, ‘next year I will move this plant over here, and I will put that plant over by the other one that blooms a little later’. You might also be thinking of colour and where you would like to see more or different colour. Gardening is a great hobby. Do as much or as little as you need to feel “right” with the world. What you do in life - at work and home is important. To be able to de-stress and relax makes it easier to move through the world touching all the lives we do in a daily basis. It makes you better at being you.

Cooking with…
Gas? Electric? Induction? Smooth/Glass Top? What’s going on in the surface burner cooking world? What’s actually out there and how does it work? Note that a range is a cooktop with an oven underneath it… Gas – Natural Gas is the least efficient (heat energy transfer) of the domestic surface cooktops but it does offer one or two major advantages. It is much more controllable than electric, has instant on and can do a true simmer. It is also possible to manually light the surface burners in a power outage. Gas is very clean and almost all new ranges use electronic ignition so there is no pilot light(s). In many cases, the supply pipe size can be increased to accommodate a larger gas range. Electric – Essentially three types of electric cooktops are available. The usual electric cooktop (range) has a 40A power supply which is not expandable for that appliance. Electronics and trick voltages aside, temperature control in electric heating is mainly done by switching the element ‘on/off’ for a period of time to determine how hot the pot gets. This is why true simmer can be a difficulty. Coil Top: Usually a fewer featured lower cost unit with the traditional round coil elements. They heat up a little slower but can take more weight (ie: canning) than a smooth top. There can be a cleaning issue with the surface burners – especially after a spill. Even though the elements may have a shorter life, they are fairly inexpensive to maintain and are a good basic unit. Smooth/Glass Top: Frequently a special type of ceramic glass with electric (radiant and/or halogen) elements underneath it. These work by fairly quickly transferring heat through the glass surface to the pot on top of it. A feature of this type is configuration of the elements – they can be expandable, bridge type or ‘keep warm’. There are some downsides – smooth flat bottom pots work best and while easy to clean, they do require some extra care in use and can be cracked. Induction: The exception to temperature control in electric surface cooking is induction. It is a smooth top but actually works by using an electrical field to cause pots with iron content to heat up. The pot then heats the food with minimal energy loss to the surrounding area. It is very efficient, safe, fast and almost as controllable as gas. Also – no surprise – more expensive. Note that newer smooth top units can ‘power rob’. Remember that 40A max? Well, if you’ve fired up all the elements and the oven and you’re at maximum current draw, the computer in your range knows it is over budget and, (unlike a politician with a theory and tax dollars), knows it actually has to reduce spending. It will reduce power to some elements to keep the whole operation going – just a little slower. As usual, there will be no shortage of advice (i.e., advertising either direct or thinly veiled as ‘news’) as to which new super efficient, “does everything but tuck you into bed at night” range or cooktop to put in your kitchen. The real decision is up to you – check and carefully verify all the information and remember: Is That A Fact? by Mark Battersby. Page 38

The Blind Salesman
A woman goes into Bass Pro Shop to buy a rod and reel for her grandson’s birthday. She doesn’t know which one to get, so she just grabs one and goes over to the counter. A Bass Pro Shop associate is standing there wearing dark shades. She says, ‘’Excuse me, sir. Can you tell me anything about this rod and reel?’’ He says, ‘’Ma’am, I’m completely blind; but if you’ll drop it on the counter, I can tell you everything from the sound it makes.’’ She doesn’t believe him, but drops it on the counter anyway. He says, ‘’That’s a six-foot Shakespeare graphite rod with a Zebco 404 reel and 10-LB test line. It’s a good all-around combination and it’s on sale this week for only $20.00.” She says, ‘’It’s amazing that you can tell all that just by the sound of it dropping on the counter. I’ll take it!’’ As she opens her purse, her credit card drops on the floor.‘’Oh, that sounds like a Master Card,’’ he says. She bends down to pick it up and accidentally farts. At first she is really embarrassed, but then realizes there is no way the blind clerk could tell it was she who tooted. Being blind, he wouldn’t know that she was the only person around. The man rings up the sale and says, ‘’That’ll be $34.50 please.’’The woman is totally confused by this and asks, ‘’Didn’t you tell me the rod and reel were on sale for $20.00? How did you get $34.50?’’ He replies, ‘’Yes, ma’am; the rod and reel are $20.00, but the duck call is $11.00 and the bear repellent is $3.50.”

Dear Lifelines: It feels like things are changing in my town. I somehow don’t feel as connected as I used to. I don’t know my neighbours any more, as people come and go. It seems like everything is changing and I can’t keep up… What can I do to make things feel right again? Lost in Transition Dear Lost: Thanks for your email question. It sounds like you are feeling a little out of sorts with the way your community is changing and you want to become more involved and connected like you used to feel. There are many reasons why communities and towns change and certainly lots of reasons why people move in and leave various towns and communities. One huge driving force is for financial reasons. There have been many recent articles and research on how the impact of altering a town’s main street can impact the entire community as people are forced to seek groceries, clothing and other goods from larger ‘big box’ stores typically located outside of the downtown area. This dynamically changes the structure and functioning of community. If you think about how people used to participate in communities, it was largely through walking downtown and shopping, browsing and supporting local business people, while at the same time visiting and connecting with merchants, consumers and meeting with friends at coffee shops and cafes. More recently, the structure of towns is changing and people are scattered in their involvement with their community and the people within the community. Many stay connected via texting, emails and other technology rather than visiting in person. Perhaps these changes are impacting your sense of connection? Although urban development and capitalism might force people to alter their habits and find new ways for navigating a town and community, there are ways you can attempt to stay in touch with the benefits of ‘small-town’ living which is why many of us moved to smaller communities to begin with. One way is that you might want to examine your own interests and attempt to establish a club or group to help support you in staying connected to like-minded people. This might be through the development of a coffee club, book club, birding, meditation, stamp, coin, parenting, photography or virtually Page 40

any topic in order to meet new people in the community and develop new friendships while pursuing your areas of interest. Recently, on Anderson Cooper, a man named Morgan Spurlock described the concept of ‘The Failure Club’. Personally, I would love this to be started in my local community! The gist of the concept is to work together as a group of people to help members of the club make their personal dreams for success come true. There are various ways to gain public interest in your club such as posting on bulletin boards (the old fashioned ones with tacks and corkboard), the local newspaper or through Kijiji, Craig’s list, Facebook and other modern ways to network and get your ideas out to the public. And lastly, you might also share your concerns about local plans and developments with your town council and connect with others that have similar concerns about future developments. The key is to get involved. Your input is valuable and you might find that even through a simple letter to the editor, you might discover there are many others with similar concerns and that you are not alone! Good luck staying connected! Lifelines

For those who have sons
You find out interesting things when you have sons, like... 1. A king size waterbed holds enough water to fill a 2000 sq. ft. house 4 inches deep. 2. If you spray hair spray on dust bunnies and run over them with roller blades, they can ignite. 3. A 3-year old boy’s voice is louder than 200 adults in a crowded restaurant. 4. If you hook a dog leash over a ceiling fan, the motor is not strong enough to rotate a 42-pound boy wearing Batman underwear and a Superman cape. It is strong enough, however, if tied to a paint can, to spread paint on all four walls of a 20x20 ft. room. 5. You should not throw baseballs up when the ceiling fan is on. When using a ceiling fan as a bat, you have to throw the ball up a few times before you get a hit. A ceiling fan can hit a baseball a long way. 6. The glass in windows (even double-pane) doesn’t stop a baseball hit by a ceiling fan. 7. When you hear the toilet flush and the words “uh oh”, it’s already too late. 8. Brake fluid mixed with Clorox makes smoke, and lots of it. 9. A six-year old boy can start a fire with a flint rock even though a 36-year old man says they can only do it in the movies. 10. Certain Lego’s will pass through the digestive tract of a 4-year old Boy. 11. “Play-dough” and “microwave” should not be used in the same sentence. 12. Super glue is forever. 13. No matter how much Jell-O you put in a swimming pool, you still can’t walk on water. 14. Pool filters do not like Jell-O. 15. VCR’s do not eject “PB & J” sandwiches even though TV commercials show they do. 16. Garbage bags do not make good parachutes. 17. Marbles in gas tanks make lots of noise when driving. 18. You probably DO NOT want to know what that odour is. 19. Always look in the oven before you turn it on; plastic toys do not like ovens. 20. The fire department in Strathmore, Alberta has a 5-minute response time. 21. The spin cycle on the washing machine does not make earthworms dizzy. 22. It will, however, make cats dizzy. 23. Cats throw up twice their body weight when dizzy. 24. 80% of women who read this will tell their friends, with or without kids. 25. 80% of men who read this will try mixing the Clorox and brake fluid. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

BODY PARTS & DISEASE - Headaches
Have you ever had a headache that just won’t go away or reoccurring headaches that constantly interrupt your busy life? There are many different causes of headaches. A headache is an extremely common symptom, experienced in one form or another by most people at one or more times in their life. The vast majority of headaches experienced by most people are benign tension headaches, which are a nuisance but harmless, and not associated with any serious underlying nervous system diseases. However, fortunately relatively rarely, some types of headaches can be associated with severe, potentially life-threatening neurologic disease, such as meningitis, aneurysms and brain tumors, to name a few. There are many types of headaches. Tension Headache: One of the most common causes of headache, a benign tension headache, also called a stress headache, is almost always, as the name implies, harmless and not due to any other underlying nervous system disease. Migraine Headache: Another common type of headache, migraines often have other symptoms and features that distinguish them from the common tension headache. Cluster Headache: A rare form of headache, it too has specific symptoms that set it apart from other types. Meningitis Headache and Fever: One of the potentially life-threatening causes of headache, meningitis is an infection in the space around the brain and spinal cord. Cerebral Aneurysm and Subarachnoid Hemorrhage: Another potentially lifethreatening, though rare, type of headache, subarachnoid hemorrhage is bleeding around the brain typically due to rupture of a cerebral aneurysm. Brain Tumor Headache: While many people worry about brain tumors when they have a headache, most headaches are not caused by a tumor. However, a tumor in or around the brain is a potential cause of headache. Learn more about what may distinguish these headaches from other benign types. Interestingly, the specific character and location of a headache is only sometimes directly related to the underlying cause. For example, benign tension headaches can present themselves in various ways. They can involve only one area of the head or the whole head, and they are generally dull or pounding in nature. However, in some specific examples, the specific nature of the headache can help point you toward the diagnosis. For example, a sudden, sharp, stabbing headache can be indicative of a subarachnoid hemorrhage, bleeding into the space around the brain, most commonly caused by the rupture of a brain aneurysm. These headache symptoms can also be accompanied by neck pain and stiffness, nausea and vomiting and a depressed level of consciousness (such as lethargy or coma). A sharp, stabbing pain behind one eye is a specific type of headache called a cluster headache. It can be associated with other symptoms such as redness and swelling of the area of the eye on that side. A headache that is worse when lying down and/or sleeping, so that it wakes you from sleep or is worst in the morning, can be associated with diseases that cause an increase in pressure inside the head. Brain tumors can cause these types of headache symptoms, as can hydrocephalus of any type. In conclusion, if you have a headache, take it seriously and consult your doctor – take your health seriously. LUSCIOUS JOYS
I love writing Luscious Joys every month because I get to share amazing family recipes from our readers. This month, all of the recipes here were sent in by Evelyn Richards; thank-you Evelyn for taking the time to HANDWRITE all the recipes you sent to us! We didn’t have room to include them all here but they will be in the recipe book for sure!
SALTED NUT BARS
2-½ Cups flour 1 Tbsp. water ½ Cup corn syrup 1 Cup soft margarine or butter 1 ½ Cups brown sugar 1 Cup butterscotch chips 2 Tbsp. butter 2 Cups mixed nuts 1 tsp. salt Combine flour, sugar, and salt and cut in butter/margarine. Press into a 10x15 cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes. Sprinkle nuts over crust and combine the other ingredients in a saucepan. Boil 2 minutes (no longer), stirring constantly. Pour over the nuts and return to the oven for another 10-12 minutes until golden. Cool before cutting – do not over bake. This sounds like one of those recipes I will not be able to stop eating.
FRUIT COCKTAIL CAKE
1 Cup white sugar 1 Cup flour 1 tsp. baking soda ½ tsp. salt Combine in a mixing bowl, and then add: 1 can (14 oz.) undrained fruit cocktail and 1 Egg, slightly beaten Mix with a spoon and pour into an ungreased 9 x 9 pan. Top with: ½ Cup brown sugar and ½ Cup walnuts chopped Bake for 350 degrees for 45 minutes. Serve with ice cream. Sounds like the recipe in one of my favourite movies of all time – Steel Magnolia. It’s a great movie for a Saturday popcorn night just for the girls.
SUNFLOWER COOKIES
¾ Cup butter or margarine ½ tsp. salt 1 ¾ Cup flour 1 tsp. vanilla 1 Cup white sugar 2 Cups quick oatmeal 1 tsp. baking soda 1 Cup flaked coconut 1 Cup lightly packed brown sugar 1 Cup salted sunflower ½ tsp. baking powder kernels 2 Eggs Mix everything together and drop by tsp. onto greased baking sheets. Bake at 350 degrees for 12-15 minutes or until lightly browned. Monthly Book Review by Derek Donais My review column is in its second year with the Newsy Neighbour. Please continue to join me each month as I explore a new read. I’ve had the opportunity to review worthwhile books by many local or regional Canadian authors, as well as some great international works. As always, my passions are fantasy and sciencefiction, but I am always on the lookout for more non-fiction, especially from local writers. I hope to build on the many bright spots and successes of 2011. MetalMagic: Talisman, the revised Canadian edition, was released in November, 2011 and I’m happy to announce that the sequel, MetalMagic: Revelation, should be available sometime in February, 2012. Thanks to all those who’ve supported the Newsy Neighbour and read my reviews over the last little while—and here’s to another year filled with promise! Yours in Truth, Derek Donais
Should I Tell My Secret? Collette Sinnott Talk About It Communications ISBN: 9780986923807
“Child sexual abuse is a very difficult topic for most parents to discuss with their children. This book opens the door and leads the way through with a clear message. We definitely recommend this book to parents.”—Laurie Szymanski - Executive Director - Little Warriors
Sarah told her friend Sam a secret. It’s a secret that Sam doesn’t know if he should keep, especially because he doesn’t feel right about it. The problem is, he promised not to tell anyone else. This is the beginning scene of Collette Sinnott’s Should I Tell My Secret? The book’s purpose is to help parents begin a conversation with their children about sexual abuse, either to prevent it from happening or to begin the process of dealing with an existing situation. Sam’s mother convinces him to tell her the secret because, she says, nobody—not a friend or even another adult—should ever ask a child to keep a secret. She goes on to explain that, “If something makes you uncomfortable or sad or even mad, you should always tell someone.” It really doesn’t matter who the child opens up to, as long as it’s someone he or she feels safe with and who will help to break the silence. Sam tells his mom that Sarah’s uncle Mike has been playing a touching game with her. He reveals that in this game, uncle Mike touches her in private places and this makes her very uncomfortable. And, he adds, her uncle told her that she can never tell anyone, especially her parents, because they might get mad and even stop loving her. Throughout their talk, Sinnott uses language that is very child-friendly will allow children of various ages to understand the issues involved. By setting the story up as a conversation between the mother and child, she also presents the information in a way that adults can readily make use of in their own homes to discuss the topic. Once Sam’s mom explains the situation and tells him she needs to let Sarah’s mom know, Sam agrees to help convince Sarah to tell her mom what she’s going through. Even though Sarah is afraid, Sam shows true friendship by supporting and encouraging her. I think this is a particular strength of the book—it not only allows for dialogue within families; it also expresses to other children the importance of caring and looking out for friends who might be suffering with similar secrets. The book begins with a note of introduction about the topic and the importance of dealing with child sexual abuse, another helpful tool for parents, guardians, or other caregivers. Sinnott has also included a game within the pages that can help to retain the attention of younger listeners while the book is read and will aid them in digesting the information with the aid of several focusing questions. The rich illustrations, created by Frankie Post, add a tone of warmth and comfort to the overall story. As the author points out, empowering children to deal with sexual abuse or to recognize the signs of other victims is an important first step in addressing this tragic issue, one that is all too common in our society. If you’ve wondered how to address the topic of abuse with children in your home, this book provides the necessary tools in a safe and educational package.

Understanding Engineers: A priest, a doctor, and an engineer were waiting one morning for a particularly slow group of golfers. The engineer fumed, “What’s with those guys? We must have been waiting for fifteen minutes!” The doctor chimed in, “I don’t know, but I’ve never seen such inept golf!” The priest said, “Here comes the green-keeper. Let’s have a word with him.” He said, “Hello George, what’s wrong with that group ahead of us? They’re rather slow, aren’t they?” The green-keeper replied, “Oh, yes. That’s a group of blind firemen. They lost their sight saving our clubhouse from a fire last year, so we always let them play for free anytime.” The group fell silent for a moment. The priest said, “That’s so sad. I think I will say a special prayer for them tonight.” The doctor said, “Good idea. I’m going to contact my ophthalmologist colleague and see if there’s anything he can do for them.” The engineer said, “Why can’t they play at night?”

MEDIA RELEASE Contact: Collette Sinnott info@collettesinnott.com
Sinnott seeks to end silence through conversation & empowerment Calgary, AB – “Should I tell my Secret?” aims to dispel the hold that secrets have on young victims of sexual abuse by encouraging conversations to take place between children and their parents or guardians. Collette Sinnott’s 32-page colourfully illustrated children’s book sets a new precedent and foundation for educating and empowering children to speak up about the secrets they are coerced into keeping when abusers or predators show up in the disguise of relatives, babysitters, neighbours or others that are held in a place of trust and then commit the crime of child abuse. “Collette has given us a way that our children can relate to by providing information that will surely empower them and help to keep them safe,” says Jack Canfield co-author of Chicken Soup for the Kid’s Soul. “We can battle this silent epidemic by starting to Talk About It,” says Sinnott. “I want to get rid of the elephant in the room – the one that everyone pretends not to see when it is about child sexual abuse. My hope is that this book will have an impact on reducing the incidents and duration of child abuse.” This book is a powerful tool to help adults start the sensitive, but necessary conversation with a child that may be suffering with the burden of a secret of this nature. It is intended to help children understand that secrets can be devastating and the road to recovery begins by breaking the silence that holds young ones captive. I wrote this book because I am an abuse survivor, I know all too well how it feels to live in silent turmoil every minute of every day, afraid to Talk About It. I know how having information early would have made a difference in my life. Now being a mother I know how hard it can be to start this conversation, so I have used my past experience to create this children’s book as a tool for any care-giver to start this sensitive but much needed conversation in order to prevent abuse, uncover abuse ,shorten the duration of abuse, and stop the silence. This book will give the necessary information to empower a child, it will also give a child who may be being abused the information they need in order to GET THEIR POWER BACK. This book will open the door for any care-giver to provide more information and keep the conversation going. Information is the key to protecting our children!. An informed child is a powerful child. An informed child is NOT A TARGET. Being a survivor if I could tell people one thing it would be; talk about it early, earlier then you think. If you do not know how to start the conversation read the book to a child and let the story start it for you. A child will ask questions just given the chance and the right opportunity. Talk about it with a child, talk about with your friends, tell your friends to talk to their friends. The more we all start talking about it the more power we take away from the Secret and the Abuser Predators rely on the secret, they rely on an adults discomfort of Talking About IT, and the rely on an adults denial. Help me start a movement of Talking About It! Talking about it today may save your child from being abused, or it may save someone else’s child from living in silent turmoil. Starting to protect our children, their future and ours can be as simple as reading this story. ~ Collette Sinnott
This book is endorsed by several sexual abuse prevention organizations Little Warriors and Darkness to light. As well as Jack Canfield (CO-Author of Chicken Soup for the Kids Soul. MY FAVOURITE – FABULOUS – FANTASTIC AND FUN STUFF Well, there is nothing more Fantastic than learning about what is going on in your planet every day. Like the stuff they do not show on the news; maybe if they reported all of the natural disasters, people would think the end of the world was coming, which we all know is not going to happen, but 2012 is truly turning out to be a year of change for our planet. There indeed has been all sorts of crazy weather, earthquakes and volcanoes waking up all over the globe. There is an amazing site called http://theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com/ where they gather and report weather and other interesting facts from around the world. No, it is not one of those crazy sites just to scare you! They find actual news reports and compile them all on this one site. I cannot imagine how scary an earthquake would be but here in Alberta, we are pretty lucky not to have any major fault lines; but the same cannot be said for our good neighbour British Columbia. Recently, just between February 1st and 2nd, there were 4 earthquakes there. 2012-02-04: M=5.6 – offshore of Vancouver Island 2012-01-28: M=4.0 – 98 km S of Queen Charlotte City, BC – felt 2012-01-17: M=2.7 – 14 km N of Oliver, BC – felt 2012-01-13: M4.6 – 215 km WSW of Bella Bella, BC – offshore As a matter of fact, earthquakes are common in BC and more than 1,200 are recorded each year across the province. What exactly is an earthquake, you ask? The earth’s crust is composed of many large and small segments called tectonic plates. These plates are in constant slow movement. With these movements come small tremors and earthquakes. An earthquake is a shaking of the ground caused by the sudden breaking and movement of
large sections (tectonic plates) of the earth’s rocky outermost crust. The edges of the tectonic plates are marked by faults (or fractures). Most earthquakes occur along the fault lines when the plates slide past each other or collide against each other. The shifting masses send out shock waves that may be powerful enough to alter the surface of the Earth, thrusting up cliffs and opening great cracks in the ground and cause great damage, like collapsing of buildings and other man-made structures, broken power and gas lines (and the consequent fire), landslides, snow avalanches, tsunamis (giant sea waves) and volcanic eruptions. In the twentieth century, the largest recorded earthquake in Canada occurred off the Queen Charlotte Islands in 1949. This magnitude 8.1 event ruptured a 500 kilometre long fault and caused extensive damage both on the Queen Charlottes and the neighbouring mainland. In 1946, a magnitude 7.3 earthquake caused significant damage to communities on Vancouver Island, while another Charlevoix region event in 1925 (magnitude 6.2) had severe effects as far away as the city of Québec (120 kilometres distant) and Shawinigan (230 kilometres distant). In 1929, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake off the coast of Newfoundland triggered a huge submarine landslide that generated a tsunami (a large induced sea wave). The tsunami struck the southern end of the Burin Peninsula in Newfoundland, where it destroyed numerous homes and businesses and claimed a total of 28 lives. The most recent event to cause significant damage in Canada was the magnitude 5.8 earthquake in Saguenay, Quebec in 1988; damage exceeded 25 million dollars. All I have to say is, Alberta is the best province to live for lots of reasons and not having (many) earthquakes is one of them! Kathryn Hartwell

Revitalize Your Home for Spring
Winter can be dark and cold, but spring is a time for warmth and light. Some simple spring redecorating will lift your spirits as much as spotting the first returning robin. Your secret weapon is colour. The vibrant colours of spring will brighten otherwise ordinary home decor. Let nature lead you to your colour palette: delicate pink cherry blossoms, lavender blue hyacinths, sunny yellow forsythia and the pale green of new leaves. Do you smile when you see a basket of tulips? Why not take your cue from nature and be surrounded by those beautiful colours? You can easily and inexpensively change a room by buying a couple of gallons of paint and doing the job yourself. Be daring and choose a colour that makes you feel good, and a little “out there.” If you don’t like it, you can always paint over it. Take down heavy drapes. They may have made you feel cozy in the cold months, but for now, get them cleaned and put them away for next year. For spring, use airy fabrics and sheer curtains that let natural light into your home. Buy new pastel throw pillows which will quickly upgrade a room and give it a new look. Don’t forget to arrange fresh flowers in bright vases whenever you get the chance. Bring on the spring. You will be ready with a home that has been refreshed, revived and renewed. Page 48

Discuss the range of care options with aging parents Baby boomers are quickly becoming a generation taking care of mom and dad. One in five Canadians between the ages of 45 and 64 is providing care to a senior, according to Statistics Canada. Taking care of aging parents can be rewarding but stressful. You may be working, juggling childcare duties, or have to travel to visit parents in their home.
financial perspective, assistance is available through a number of tax breaks. If your parent is 65 or older, has a disability, and moves in with you, you may be eligible for the federal caregiver tax credit of $4,197 for 2009, plus any provincial tax credits. If you make structural changes to accommodate parents’ needs, such as redoing a bathroom for wheelchair access, you may also be eligible to claim the medical expense tax credit of up to $10,000 (dependent on income). Professional advice can help you navigate your financial responsibilities of caregiving. Brought to you by: ATB Investor Services
BRAND NEW CONDOS FOR RENT
When independence wanes When a parent faces difficulty living independently, you might have several courses of action to discuss. Many communities have government-funded home care offering personal-care services, allowing a parent to stay in his or her home for as long as possible. Private retirement residences offer individual suites, 24-hour nursing care, and organized activities. Many can increase the level of care as needed. Long-term care facilities tend to those who have significant health care issues.

The Newsy Neighbour
You know there is always something weird and wacky going on around the world each and every day and most of these things never hit the news – aren’t we all really tired of politics and oil prices? Well, I know I am – not that they aren’t important. We here at The Newsy Neighbour thought we would start this new column just for a little FUN, and to share the quirky stuff. The stuff the news channels don’t find interesting or are afraid to report. Like this newest strange event of all these metal boxes that are appearing along the coastlines all over the world – very strange. This report was found on the http://theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com/ site. February 14, 2012 – As of late afternoon Feb. 8, Bill Hanshumaker, a public marine specialist and (Ph.D) doctor of marine science at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in nearby Newport, told Huliq in an interview that, “I don’t know what they are.” In turn, Doctor Hanshumaker said he’s advised “surf monitoring” about these strange metal boxes that suddenly appeared along local beaches Feb. 6, and now seem to be multiplying like Star Trek “Tribbles.” The photograph that accompanies this report – taken during the afternoon of Feb. 8 near Bray’s Point — of yet another strange metal box stuck in the surf is one of a possible group of a dozen or more that have been sited up and down West Coast beaches. Meanwhile, the British government also photographed similar huge metal boxes on beaches in Sri Lanka in the late 1990’s and in early 2004 and 2005. The metal boxes along Oregon, Washington State and Northern California beaches are now being photographed, documented and examined by local experts. Doctor Hanshumaker works for OSU research enterprise at the nearby Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, Oregon. Whenever there’s some dead sea life – such as a beached whale or other something along the lines of massive dead sea birds – the experts at the Hatfield are called in to investigate. When asked if he’s ever heard of anything like these huge metal boxes, with no opening or seam, Doctor Hanshumaker would not comment or speculate on the record but said that an alert has gone out and the boxes are being investigated. Of course, Huliq will continue to monitor this breaking story that has local coastal residents and visitors scratching their heads. Larry Fairall says: February 16, 2012 at 12:49 pm. Over many many years we have heard of numerous odd events as we are hearing now. It reminds me of a childrens fable, The Sky Is Falling, as Henny Penny or Chicken Little ran to tell the King. A prophecy of doom. Over time they heard it so much that they didn’t believe it and closed their minds (most of the world). However, some did believe and seperated the truth from the hoax and continue to watch, discern and evaluate these anomalies. We must be good stewards of our knowledge, we must report all so all can interpret, and not as the Main Line News does picking what they feel is news worthy”. Perhaps Chicken Little, which has been around from the 19th century, is not so much of a fable, but a warning. Hoaxes are there to disguise the true dangers. Most will not even take the time to report, check and research. They won’t be fooled again, as The Who sang. www.thenewsyneighbour.com
