A New Look for the Canadian Tour!
Great news for the financially challenged Canadian Tour, as it is being taken over by the PGA! The Canadian Tour will soon be re-branded as the PGA Tour of Canada. “This is great news for everyone,” says Tim Garbett, executive director of the Canadian Tour ATB Financial Classic presented by Telus. “Players, sponsors, fans and the venues will all benefit and the quality of the fields will improve.” The PGA loaned the Canadian Tour money last year to cover operating costs and recently met with the Canadian Tour players to outline their plan. The plan includes the Mexican Tour (Tour De Las Americas). Canada and Mexico will now be a direct feeder to the Nationwide Tour. If everything goes according to plan, there would be 10 events in Canada and 10 events in Mexico. The power of the PGA brand should increase marketing opportunities and TV exposure for the PGA Tour of Canada. “We’ve had a great relationship with the Canadian Tour,” says John Windwick, ATB Financial, VP of community and government relations. “This news could take our partnership to a new level.” A strong rumour at the Windermere Golf Club for the Canadian Tour event in Edmonton was Telus is re-thinking its partnership with the Canadian Skins Game. The skins game is getting old and tired. It’s a very expensive property for hosting and activation. TV ratings do not justify the expense. If Telus was to direct some of these funds to the PGA Tour of Canada, we could once again see Edmonton and Calgary host a yearly event. This would mean three stops in Alberta, including the Syncrude Boreal Open in Fort McMurray. The PGA Tour of Canada will be in Calgary next year at Country Hills. IGGY Update! Since we’re talking about sponsorship, I understand Scotiabank has ended its long standing relationship with CalPage 12

gary Flames Captain Jarome Iginla. Does the major sponsor of the Saddledome have some inside information? Or maybe they are just tired of those bad TV commercials? My sources tell me that the Flames have had many discussions with Iginla’s agent Don Meehan on a contract extension, but have hit nothing but roadblock after roadblock. Does Iggy really want to finish his career as a Flame or is he just as confused as everybody else with the direction this organization is taking? If a new contract is not announced soon, the Flames may have no choice but to move their most popular player. The organization certainly can’t risk having him walk away next summer as an unrestricted free agent. If Iginla truly is part of the future moving forward, the Flames must sign their captain to a new four or five year contract extension ASAP!
Prediction Time! As a new CFL season is underway, I may as well put it in print. The Calgary Stampeders will finish in second place in the Western Conference this season. The Stamps will need to take advantage of a relatively easy schedule in the first four weeks of the season. If not, they may drop back to third! The BC Lions are the class of the Western Conference and I would not be surprised if they win 14 or 15 games. Henry Burris and the Hamilton Tiger Cats are going to be the team to beat in the East. Montreal and Saskatchewan will be on the outside looking in come playoff time.

A sentence we all seem to know in an area where we seem to experience every weather type; rain, hail, snow, wind and sun, seemingly all in one day. When shopping for our home, a decent backyard was a priority, as my wife and I both enjoy the outdoors. A number of months later we were sad to notice that we spend little time in it. Whenever we get comfortable, the weather changes, and we once again head indoors. To combat this problem, we have been looking at different opportunities to turn our unpredictable backyard into a relaxing escape, for any time; rain or shine. Understanding that many others have complained about this problem, we are taking this opportunity to look at a possible solution. For us, the most promising solution seems to come in the form of a patio cover. We are discovering that the market is filled with many different types. The range includes solid aluminum, glass, acrylic and polycarbonates. Each has different advantages and disadvantages, and because of this, we recommend that you decide what is most important to you before starting research. Some things to consider are: do you want to block the heat, keep the light (so your kitchen doesn’t get darker), or block UV rays? Is price a big factor? How about warranty? Ranking your priorities can help make a decision in a diverse market. Our personal favourite is the acrylic cover, as it best fits our priorities, while being affordably priced. We like to think
it is the best bang for your buck. To explain this, I will give you our three favourite characteristics. The newer acrylics on the market will block the UV rays, not only protecting your family, but also keeping these rays from breaking down your outdoor furniture. These covers shine in the fact that they can do this while allowing natural light to come through, giving a soft, safe illumination. Last, but definitely not least, we love the fact that it can stop the heat. Coming with different levels of heat blocking, the perfect match is available for any deck location, or heat- or shade-seeker. Some of our concerns were, “Will it stand up to Alberta weather?” and, “What about hail?” The first answer we have found is that all companies that sell and install patio covers need to have an engineered cover, approved and stamped by an engineer with an Alberta license. Building the cover to the engineered drawings will ensure they can handle both snow and wind loads. As to hail, not all covers offer hail warranty, and with the amount of hail we have had in recent years, I feel those covers should say on the shelf, or in a box. So the next time you get chased indoors by our erratic weather, consider calling your local patio cover dealer and start enjoying your backyard makeover under a newly installed patio cover… I can’t wait to watch a thunderstorm from under mine!

Luscious Joys By: Kathryn Hartwell Does the thought of a romantic evening at home feel foreign to you, or does it bring on a sudden panic attack? You know – a nice bottle of wine, some candles, decadent food, some soothing music and perhaps wearing something other than your comfy clothes? It’s not always easy to think of ideas for a romantic evening at home, particularly for couples who are either not terribly romantic, or who have been together for so long that some of the spark has dwindled. To help you plan your special evening in this month’s Luscious Joys, I have included (yes!) decadent romantic finger food. Finger food can be fun and you can feed each other. You never know until you try – come on, you might rekindle some of that lost passion! It doesn’t get more romantic than this:
Dried Fruit and Caramel Brie 1 (6-inch) wheel brie cheese, ¼ Cup sliced almonds or candied pecans, 1 Cup dried fruit mix (pre-purchased mix or create your own blend of cranberries, blueberries, cherries, mango, pineapple, candied ginger), 2 Tbsp butter, ½ Cup brown sugar, ¼ Cup Orange Liqueur (Grand Marnier or Cointreau) - Optional Preheat the oven to 350°F. Melt brown sugar in butter - mix well. Add in orange liqueur, dried fruit mix and almonds and stir. Pour over brie in oven-proof pan and bake for 15-20 minutes at 350 degrees. Let sit for 5-10 minutes and then transfer to a serving dish. Cut a small wedge of the brie to let some cheese ooze out and indulge in this decadent dish. Serve with water crackers or sliced baguette. For you Oyster lovers:

24 fresh oysters, in their shells, rock salt, 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce, 3 Tbsp butter, 4 slices bacon finely diced, sea salt, to taste, fresh ground black pepper, to taste, 2 Tbsp flat leaf parsley, chopped, lemon wedge, to serve Preheat the grill to the highest temperature. Arrange the oysters on a bed of rock salt in a large, shallow, ovenproof dish. Combine the Worcestershire sauce and butter in a small saucepan and heat the butter until it melts and the mixture begins to bubble around the edges of the saucepan. Remove from the heat. Spoon a little of the Worcestershire sauce and butter mixture over each oyster, and top evenly with the diced bacon and season with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste. Cook under a preheated grill for 3-4 minutes, or until the bacon is crisp. Sprinkle with parsley, and serve with lemon wedges. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

The Drug Dog A man had just settled into his seat next to the window on the plane when another man sits down in the aisle seat and puts his black Labrador in the middle seat next to the man. The first man looks very quizzically at the dog and asks why the dog is allowed on the plane. The second man explains that he is a Drug Enforcement Agency officer and the dog is a ‘sniffer dog’. “His name is Smithy and he’s the best there is. I’ll show you once we get airborne, when I put him to work.” The plane takes off, and once it has leveled, the agent says, “Watch this,” and tells Smithy to ‘search’. Smithy jumps down, walks along the aisle, and finally sits very purposefully next to a woman for several seconds. Smithy then returns to his seat and puts one paw on the agent’s arm. The agent says, “Good boy,” and he turns to the man. “That woman is in possession of marijuana, so I’m making a note of

her seat number and the authorities will apprehend her when we land.” “Say, that’s pretty neat,” replies the first man. Once again, the agent sends Smithy to search the aisles. The Lab sniffs about, sits down beside a man for a few seconds, returns to his seat and this time, he places two paws on the agent’s arm. The agent says, “That man is carrying cocaine, so again, I’m making note of his seat number for the police.” The agent then tells Smithy to ‘search’ again. Smithy walks up and down the aisles for a little while, sits down for a moment and then comes racing back to the agent, jumps into the middle seat and proceeds to poop. The first man is really amazed by this behaviour and can’t figure out how or why a well-trained dog would behave like this, so he asks the agent, “What’s going on?” The agent nervously replies, “He just found a bomb.”

How many dogs does it take to change a lightbulb? Australian Shepherd: Just one, while the rest herd the property for any more light bulbs or light switches that need to be replaced. Pit Bull: As long as I’m here, nobody can change ANYTHING. Not as long as I’m around. NO WAY. Golden Retriever: It doesn’t matter. I will find the flashlight to find my toys and will play fetch nonstop. Rottweiler: Try and MAKE ME!! Just try it. Labrador: Oh me, me!!! Huh? Huh? Pleeeeeeeeeze let me change it! Can I? Can I? You sure you only want me to change it once? German Shepherd: Roger that. First of all, I need to see if that is truly a light bulb or a bomb. Maltese: Let the German Shepherd do it. Cocky jerk. You can fix my hair. Yes. Of course piggy tails; what else? Border Collie: Just one. -Bauer My parents call me Bauer. In order to keep from confusion, I will refer to myself in this blog as “Bauer”, but I shall state here and now – I prefer The Delta Ninja. I am 4 years old. I once WAS extremely spoiled and incredibly loved (since the baby came, I’m now chopped liver!), and even though I’m “technically” a miniature schnauzer, I have the bark of a Great Dane. Try to walk within 100 yards of me on the side walk and I will show you. My roommates like to call themselves “mommy” and “daddy.” I like to refer to them as “Employee 1” and “Employee 2.” In order to prevent any confusion, I will just refer to them as Mommy and Daddy for the purpose of this blog. Please take note: I absolutely despise it. See how much I am compromising? I was once the baby of the family. I was once more loved than any other puppy in the world. Then SHE came along. Her… with her pink outfits and super strong hands and sticky hugs… she has ruined my life. I like to make her think I like her by eating what she hands me, but I will seek my revenge. In the meantime, I will just poop as far away from them on the walk as possible. That’ll teach them. This blog is about my life, and how great it once was and how awful it is now. Case in point: Did you know I only go for three walks a day now? THREE!!!!! Sometimes I only get to go for two, or – gasp! – ONE! Sure, those are the days when it is snowing or extremely cold or raining, but it just goes to show how little I’m loved. And they make me SIT for a treat. How can anyone tell The Delta Ninja to SIT?! I do not sit for YOU, ma’am. You must sit for me! Hmm… she does have a piece of cheese… Ok, sit I shall, but I will NOT like it! Please do not laugh at this blog, as it is not funny. I have a Blue Jay I have a Blue Jay… I’m so excited! I have a couple of squirrels, too! Now, you’re thinking to yourself – I think she has gone squirrely! No, no – you see, the deck at the side of my home is surrounded by big, beautiful trees and after living here just one week I spotted a Blue Jay sitting on my deck railing! Well, was I ever pleased – the last time I saw one of these beautiful birds was at The Giant Cedars on my way to Vernon. I quickly ran out and bought a big bird feeder and filled it with sunflower seeds. Then, everything changed. I found out not only are sunflower seeds a Blue Jay’s favourite treat, but squirrels love them, too! Those silly little fuzzy friends hang upside down from the branch and reach their little hands into the feeder to take their share of the wealth. Now I watch from my patio doors in the morning while having my morning coffee and marvel at all the comings and goings (I love living in Strathmore). Blue Jays are quite the interesting bird. I was sad to learn they only live about 7 years – I wonder how old my Jalen (means bird of light) is? Blue Jays are monogamous, and form long-lasting bonds. The male and female both help to build the nest and the male remains with the female to feed her throughout courtship and incubation of the eggs. I’ve only seen the one bird, so my hopes are Mrs. Jalen is sitting on her eggs close by; only time will tell. Jay’s have been found to have erratic migratory patterns, as sometimes they migrate south for the winter and other years they do not. So I may have my morning guest around all winter! Good thing sunflower seeds aren’t that expensive. Thank you, Strathmore, for extending your friendly hand to us and welcoming my family to your amazing town! Last July, my focus for the Family Page was the noble horse, and as the Arabian Proverb says, “The Horse is God’s Gift to Mankind,” I have done it again! There is never enough you can say about our galloping, whinnying friends. Horses capture our imagination and our hearts. July and August have soooo many events to showcase the animal that has done more to change human history than any other domestic animal, carrying explorers to new frontiers and mighty armies to great conquests. The Calgary Stampede (July 6th – 15th), Strathmore Heritage Days (August 3rd – 6th), The 43rd Annual Reunion and Show (August 10th – 12th) at the Irricana Pioneer Acres Museum (where you will see the incredibly magnificent Draft Horse Teams), The Spruce Meadows North American (July 4th – 8th) and Bar U Ranch out by Longview has a plethora of activities all summer long – just to name a few!

Actually, the title of the column this month should be ‘What’s Sweet in the World Today?”! These news stories are all pretty sweet. Dogs are amazing animals. UNBELIEVABLE: Stray Dog Runs 1,700 Km across China after Befriending Cross-Country Cyclists By Spooky on May 28th, 2012 After a cyclist gave her food during a cross-country race through China, Xiao Sa, a little stray dog with a really big heart, followed the cyclists 1,100 miles across very rough terrain. The incredible journey of Xiao Sa began on the streets of Yajiang, Sichuan province. Zhang Heng, a 22-year-old student from Hubei, was on a graduation cycling trip to Lhasa, when he saw the small dog lying tired on the street. He and his friends stopped to feed her, and the pooch started following them. At first, they thought she was just doing it for fun and would give up when she got tired, but the dog stuck with them day and night, and the guys felt she really wanted to go with them, so they decided to take her along to the end. TV Channel for Canines Proves Television Is Going to the Dogs By Sumitra on February 21st, 2012 Television in San Diego is going to the dogs. No, really. They have a new 24-hour channel that’s just meant to keep dogs company when the owners are out of the house. DOGTV was launched on Time Warner and Cox digital cable systems last week. It’s not uncommon for dogs to feel lonely when their masters leave the house, and some even wreck things out of anxiety. According to Gilad Neumann, CEO of DOGTV, there are several other behavioural issues that dogs develop due to loneliness. He says dogs experience stress too, and leaving the TV on for them could provide some comfort. So what kind of programs do dogs like to watch? Obviously, ones with other dogs. There are programs of dogs playing with balls, meant to stimulate pets, and dogs sleeping, meant to relax them. Since the concept is still very new, it’s difficult to say if pets will really be interested in the channel or not. While Neumann says that it is intended to create a soothing and relaxing environment for dogs, professor of animal behaviour Dr. Katherine Houpt thinks that the channel is not likely to be successful. She says that cats may be interested in TV, while dogs prefer the sound. Dogs don’t even want to be entertained and like to sleep when alone, according to Dr. Houpt. tion. After all, he has waited for his master outside a local bank, from 9 am to 5 pm, every single day for the past 4 years. Wang Cai was a homeless dog found wandering on the streets of Chongqing, China, four years ago, when a kind soul decided to adopt him. Ever since, he has been accompanying his new owner to work every morning and waited outside patiently for the next 8 hours, only to return home in the evening. According to the dog’s master, the behaviour perplexed him at first, since he didn’t really train Wang Cai to do anything of the sort. The owner suspects that the dog might be waiting for his previous master, but he has no issues with the strange behaviour.

Off Leash Dog Parks & Jerks Go Together Like Trailer Parks & Tornadoes I live in the wilderness. Well, on the edge of the wilderness. We grow tulips expressly for the dining enjoyment of large herds of ravenous deer. Cougars ensure the only domestic cats in our village are the ridiculously fat, lazy (and, obviously, smart) ones that never venture outdoors. Bears camp out in our backyard. Seriously. One broke into a neighbor’s home a couple of years ago. He was found contentedly snoozing on his back on the living room couch, four giant paws in the air, having ripped the hinges off the fridge and helped himself to beer and cheese and jars of pickled herring. Everyone here in Kaslo has at least one dog. No need to “exercise” them here — you simply let your best friend out the front door, he chases something wild for a while, comes back eventually, et voila, Fido’s had his workout. Things are, of course, somewhat different in the city. Most urban centers, in an effort to keep dog excrement on sidewalks to a minimum, have designated offleash dog parks, where canines and their owners can enjoy some semblance of the outdoorsy existence Scout the Wonder Dog and I take for granted. I mention this because dog parks are breeding grounds for bad (usually human) behavior. If any of you are occasionally forced to spend any time in Calgary or Edmonton and choose to take your dog along, you likely know what I mean. Dog parks attract thoughtless jerks the way trailer parks attract tornadoes. It’s like some people decide that because they find themselves in a place where their out-of-control, misbehaving mutts can Page 32

roam unfettered by leash or law, they, too, can wander around the park without concern for any of the social niceties. An hour in most off leash dog parks would be enough to make the Dalai Lama consider violence as an attractive option. I could provide you with a few tips on how to ensure you’re not part of this problem, but happily I needn’t bother — the October 2011 issue of Outside magazine has done that for me. Here are four suggestions from my pals at Outside to consider the next time you’re taking a stroll with Fang through an off leash park: Rule the Dog Park 1. DO: Address other people and say, “Good-lookin’ dog.” DON’T: Ask a dog his name. He doesn’t speak English. 2. DO: Bend at the knees during scrums to avoid serious orthopedic surgery. DON’T: Shout “He’s friendly!” as your dog barrels toward others. (“Watch out!” is acceptable.) 3. DO: Keep your dog under control. DON’T: Remark “Oh, look—they’re friends,” as your dog violently humps another. 4. DO: Scoop poop. DON’T: Vow to clean it up later. Dogs may be our best friends (Scout’s certainly right up there in my personal pantheon of pals). But sometimes I wonder if we’re very good at returning the favour.

Stay Physically Active
With kids being out of school and all of the demands of summer knocking at your door, how are you going to find the time to stay physically active? Most of us answer with, “I’m way more active in the summer, so I don’t need to stick to my regular work out schedule.” This may be true in some cases, but the reality is that we are all super busy and this mind set can easily turn into “I’ll do it tomorrow.” Before you know it, summer is gone, Christmas is approaching and the scale says you weigh more than you did last year. Sound familiar? “But I don’t have the time to work out.” Do you have 20 or 30 minutes? Most people believe that they have to spend hours working out to achieve their fitness goals; this is simply not the case. Interval training is the best way to burn the most calories in the shortest amount of time. Hours after you have completed your work out, your body will still be burning calories. What is interval training? An interval is a movement preformed at a high intensity for a set amount of time. Depending on your goals, intervals can be strength based, cardio based or both. An example would be sprinting for 20 seconds and then walking for 10 seconds. Intervals can be performed anywhere; indoors, outdoors, fitness classes, your living room, or a hotel room. An entire work out can be completed in as little as 20 minutes! Interval training is not for everyone, but can be modified for most fitness levels. If you are not sure where to start, try taking a class at your local fitness center or enlisting the help of a fitness professional. Baking Soda
Baking soda is a chemical compound that appears as a fine powder. It releases bubbles of carbon dioxide when it interacts with an acid and a liquid. It’s most commonly used in baking, where it acts as a leavening agent. The following are 40 other uses for baking soda aside from making muffins soft and fluffy. 1. Use it as an antacid. 2. Use it as underarm deodourant by applying it with a powder puff. 3. Mix half a teaspoon with peroxide paste and use it as toothpaste. 4. Use it as a face and body scrub. 5. Add a cup to bathwater to soften your skin. 6. Relieve skin itch from insect bites and pain from sunburn. 7. Remove strong odours from your hands by rubbing them with baking soda and water. 8. Put two tablespoons in your baby’s bathwater to help relieve diaper rash. 9. Apply it on rashes, insect bites, and poison ivy irritations. 10. Take a baking soda bath to relieve skin irritations. 11. Heartburn? Take a teaspoon of baking soda mixed with one-half glass of water. 12. Freshen your mouth by gargling half a teaspoon of baking soda mixed water. 13. Relieve canker sore pain by using it as mouthwash. 14. Use it to relieve bee stings. 15. Use it to relieve windburns. 16. Apply it on jellyfish sting to draw out the venom. 17. Unblock stuffy nose by adding a teaspoon of baking soda to your vaporizer. 18. Keep cut flowers fresh longer by adding a teaspoon to the water in the vase. 19. Put out small fires on rugs, upholstery, clothing, and wood. 20. Put an open container of baking soda in the fridge to absorb the odours. 21. Sprinkle it on your ashtrays to reduce bad odour and prevent smoldering. 22. Sprinkle it on your slippers, boots, shoes, and socks to eliminate foul odour. 23. Turn baking soda into modeling clay by combining it with one and 1/4 cups of water and one cup of cornstarch. 24. After feeding your baby, wipe his shirt with a moist cloth sprinkled with baking soda to remove the odour. 25. Wipe your windshield with it to repel rain. 26. Improve the smell of dishrags by soaking them in baking soda and water. 27. Suck it in with your vacuum cleaner to remove the odour. 28. Freshen the air by mixing baking soda with your favourite perfumed bath salts. Put the mixture in small sachet bags. 29. Restore stiff brushes by boiling them in a solution of 1/2 gallon of water, 1/4 cup of vinegar, a cup of baking soda. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Parent Link Centers are Provincially funded to support parents and caregivers by providing early childhood development programs and services that are uniquely designed to meet the unique needs of children and families in Alberta communities. Each centre offers parent education programs, programs for young children to learn and play, information and referrals, family support services (such as lending libraries, resource exchanges, family counseling, etc.) and developmental screening to support optimal child development. AGES AND STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT NINETEEN TO TWENTY-FOUR MONTHS By Jeanette MacKay, Reprinted This is the sixth in a series of articles on child development written to help parents and caregivers recognize and understand the ages and stages of a child’s physical, emotional, social and intellectual development during the first five years. These are only guidelines as every child is unique with their own personality, learning style and family background. There are, however, some general similarities that can help you recognize the stages of development and offer a nurturing environment where your child may develop to their full potential. Kidz 1st Network Parent Link Centre also offers developmental screening so that you can monitor and celebrate your child’s progress, or access information for early intervention when this seems appropriate. Your baby is becoming a toddler and with this stage of development comes many more challenges and rewards of parenting. All children vary in their rate of development and the following stages may occur anywhere in the five months discussed here. Keep challenging your toddler as he successfully masters a stage of development but don’t expect more than your child is capable of. Praise and encourage your toddler as he tests his independence and remember that the way he learns is by doing, so offer many opportunities for him to experience new places and things. Emotionally, your toddler is developing traits such as resiliency, empathy, sympathy, caring and assertiveness. She is pulled between being independent and dependent and this may show in various mood swings and tantrums. Try to stay calm, speak in a quiet voice and give her space to calm herself if possible. Watch for signs of aggression such as biting or hitting and try to help her deal with her frustration in a positive way. Emotions can be very ‘big’ at this age and talking about them with your toddler will help her understand how she is feeling. She shows affection, returning a hug or kiss and may have a strong attachment to a toy, special book or blanket. Physically, your toddler is becoming more coordinated and is able to use his hands and fingers to perform more accurate manipulaPage 38

tions. He will scribble and make dots on paper and copy making a line when he sees you do it. He can pick up a cup and drink on his own and use a spoon to feed himself without too many spills. He likes to take off items of clothing such as his socks, shoes, and hat. Getting him to keep a hat on may be a bit of a challenge but this is one of the times when you may want to start setting limits, “When we play outside we need to keep a hat on, when we go inside you can take it off.” Your toddler can string large beads using one hand to slide the bead and one hand to hold the string. He can ride wheeled toys by either pushing with his feet or pedaling. He walks backwards or sideways while pushing a toy and can carry a large toy while walking. He will try to kick a ball and is able to back into a chair to sit down. Intellectually, your toddler is thinking creatively and abstractly, developing a keen judgement and solving problems. She speaks using two connected words such as “more juice” and asks for help through words or actions. She will imitate new words and phrases and can name pictures of familiar objects in books when they are pointed at. She understands how familiar objects are used such as a ball for throwing and a spoon for eating and she is showing an increased memory for details and routines such as putting toys away in designated places. Socially, your toddler is interested in other children and is learning to get along with others. He is building self-confidence, cooperation and trust which will help him develop the skills needed to be part of a team and a good leader. Your toddler will play alone for a few minutes and likes to do things without help. He shows ownership of objects and still can’t share easily. “Mine” and “Me do it” may be favourite phrases. Comfort, play with and teach your toddler by providing the appropriate motor and sensory stimulation. Start setting limits such as ‘no hurting others, be gentle’ and be sure that all primary care givers are consistent. Give positive direction, “Please close the door gently,” instead of “Don’t slam the door.” Offer as many opportunities for independence as possible, allowing her to undress herself as much as she can, feed herself, wipe up spills, put clothes in drawers, and put groceries away. Use a stool by the sink so she is able to wash her hands and brush her teeth. Give choices whenever possible, “Do you want water or juice?” Establish routines so that your toddler learns to anticipate what comes next and has a sense of comfort in knowing what to expect. Take along a familiar toy or snack and talk about what you’ll be doing when going on an outing or participating in a new activity. Use stories and songs to explore emotions, new words and activities that reflect her life, e.g. childcare, the doctor, playing with others. Play parade, and follow the leader, practicing balance, crawling, jumping, squatting, walking backwards, and going over, under and through. Use various forms of music to dance to and encourage creativity. Play sorting games, talking about shapes, sizes and colours. Use a toy and a shoebox to explore concepts such as over, under, behind, and on. Offer lacing cards or large beads and string so your toddler can practice using her fine motor skills. She still likes to put things in her mouth so be sure this activity is closely supervised. Take time to see the delight in the little things such as splashing in puddles and watching the ants crawl. Let your toddler know how special she is, with expressions as “Wow, you did it yourself!” or “You are so helpful”. Must handle assembly and product safety testing of a half million cheap, plastic toys and battery operated devices. Must always hope for the best but be prepared for the worst. Must assume final, complete accountability for the quality of the end product. Responsibilities also include floor maintenance and janitorial work throughout the facility. Your job is to remain in the same position for years, without complaining, constantly retraining and updating your skills, so that those in your charge can ultimately surpass you. Hawaiian Good Luck Sign The other day I went up to a local Christian bookstore and saw a honk if you love Jesus bumper sticker. I was feeling particularly sassy that day because I had just come from a thrilling choir performance, followed by a thunderous prayer meeting, so I bought the sticker and put in on my bumper. I was stopped at a red light at a busy intersection, just lost in thought about the Lord and how good He is and I didn’t notice that the light had changed. It is a good thing someone else loves Jesus because if he hadn’t honked, I’d never have noticed. I found that LOTS of people love Jesus. Why, while I was sitting there, the guy behind started honking like crazy, and when he leaned out of his window and screamed, “for the love of God, GO! GO!� What an exuberant cheerleader he was for Jesus! Everyone started honking! I just leaned out of my window and started waving and smiling at all these loving people. I even honked my horn a few times to share in the love. There must have been a man from Florida back there because I heard him yelling something about a sunny beach. I saw another guy waving in a funny way with only his middle finger stuck up in the air. When I asked my teenage grandson in the back seat what that meant, he said that it was probably a Hawaiian good luck sign or something. Page 42

Well, I’ve never met anyone from Hawaii, so I leaned out the window and gave him the good luck sign back. My grandson burst out laughing; why, even he was enjoying this religious experience! A couple of the people were so caught up in the joy of the moment that they got out of their cars and started walking towards me. I bet they wanted to pray or ask what church I attended, but this is when I noticed the light had changed. So, I waved to all my sisters and brothers grinning, and drove on through the intersection. I noticed I was the only car that got through the intersection before the light changed again and I felt kind of sad that I had to leave them after all the love we had shared, so I slowed the car down, leaned out of the window and gave them all the Hawaiian good luck sign one last time as I drove away. I AM A... CARROT Hi there. My name is Caroline Carrot. While a woman is usually reluctant to admit her age, I must confess that I am very, very old (even though I certainly don’t feel it). We carrots got our start in Central Asia and the Middle East back in what laymen (and most carrots) refer to as “the Dawn of Time.” I don’t want to get into an argument with any agro-archeologists out there, so suffice to say I’m considerably older than you – hope that makes you feel better about yourself!
History To begin with we were actually rather purple in colour, sort of like an eggplant, thanks to the minerals present in the soil where we grew. In pre-Hellenic times a yellow-rooted carrot appeared in Afghanistan, where we were eventually cultivated into the orange carrot you’re familiar with today (see, Afghani farmers know how to grow something other than poppies!). While orange is by far the most common carrot taproot colour, red, white, yellow, and purple varieties do exist. Anyway, we quickly became quite popular, and because it was relatively easy to transport us we soon ended up in the Mediterranean region, where we were adopted by first the Greeks, then the Romans, largely for medicinal purposes. The fact is, our taproots, while nutritious, were pretty tough and fibrous. By the 17th century, European growers began to selectively breed us, in the process making our taproots larger and less woody-textured. Suddenly we were in demand as much because people liked our flavour and consistency as for our health benefits. As Europeans set out conquering and colonizing large parts of the world, they carried with them carrot seeds to Asia and North Africa. We first arrived in North America in the early 1800s, and were the first vegetable to be canned, I’m proud to say. Today the world’s largest carrot producers are the United States, France, England, Poland, and China.
Health On the health side of things, our bright orange colour comes from beta-carotene, which metabolizes into vitamin A in humans, an important element in ensuring good eyesight (if you want to impress your friends, family, and fellow sports fans whose teams feature orange prominently in their team colours, eat massive amounts of us and you’ll trigger carotenosis, a harmless condition that turns the skin orange – just don’t tell your mom I told you this!). Beta-carotene, by the way, also helps prevent macular degeneration and the development of senile cataracts, the leading cause of blindness in the elderly. And if you’re a smoker (please say it isn’t so!), a carrot a day could provide you with enough vitamin A to reduce your risk of lung cancer by half – one of the many nasty carcinogens in cigarette smoke (benzoapyrene) induces vitamin A deficiency in smokers – carrots to the rescue! A Massachusetts study found that people who ate at least one serving of carrots (or squash) a day had a 60% reduction in heart attack risk. In some cultures, we’re used to treat digestive problems and intestinal parasites, even tonsillitis and constipation. While I like to consider us a generally “friendly” vegetable, don’t store us with potatoes, apples, pears, or other fruit or vegetables, as this ends to make us bitter (I’m talking taste here, not emotion!). Well, as that famous carrot connoisseur, Bugs Bunny, used to say, “That’s all folks!” Enjoy the recipes! Caroline Carrot
CARROT GINGER SOUP 2 Tbsp (30mL) butter or margarine 2 stalks celery - diced 1 medium onion - diced 4 Cups (960mL) sliced carrots 2 Tbsp (30mL) flour 5 Cups (1200mL) chicken stock ¼ Cup (60mL) orange juice ¾ tsp (4mL) black pepper and ground ginger ½ tsp (2.5mL) basil 2 bay leaves In a large saucepan heat stock. Add margarine, carrots, celery, and onion and bring to a boil; when vegetables are softened, add flour. Add remaining ingredients, except pepper and ginger. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 25 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove bay leaf and purée using a food processor. Add pepper and ginger. Reheat and serve. Garnish with a swirl of sour cream or chopped chives. ~ Sent in by John Goodman
CHINESE NOODLE AND CARROT SALAD 6 medium carrots 9 oz linguine style pasta 3 Tbsp (45mL) soya sauce 3 Tbsp (45mL) sesame oil 2 Tbsp (30mL) grated pared ginger root 2 Tbsp (30mL) crushed garlic 2 Tbsp (30mL) sugar 2 Tbsp (30mL) toasted sesame seeds 8 oz water chestnuts (drained, sliced) 4 medium onions (sliced) 1 tsp (5mL) hot chilli oil Trim and pare carrots, cut into thin, long diagonal slices. Add carrots to 2 pints of boiling water, return to boil and simmer for 5 minutes until tender. Drain and flush with warm water. Bring 2 further pints of water to boil in kettle. Cut bundle of noodles once or twice across to shorten. Slip noodles into boiling water and simmer for 2 minutes. Drain and rinse. In bottom of a salad bowl combine soya sauce, sesame oil, garlic, sugar and sesame seeds. Mix to blend, then add carrots, noodles, water chestnuts, and onion. Toss well and add chilli oil to taste. Cover salad and chill at least 4 hours to let flavours develop.

Carrots contain small amounts of essential oils, carbohydrates and nitrogenous composites. They are well-known for their sweetening, antianaemic, healing, diuretic, remineralizing and sedative properties. The carrot is an herbaceous plant containing about 87% water, rich in mineral salts and vitamins (B,C,D,E). Carrots are an excellent source of vitamin A, a good source of potassium, and contain vitamins C & B6, copper, folic acid, thiamine and magnesium. High levels of beta-carotene give carrots their distinctive orange colour.

MY Favourite, FABULOUS, FANTASTIC AND FUN STUFF By: Kathryn Hartwell This column is one of my favourites to write because I’m able to include such a wide array of different information. Over the years, in books and magazines, and even on Oprah, I have found all sorts of information regarding “gratitude” and how living with gratitude in your life will actually change the way you feel and even change the things that happen in your life. Just take a little time every day and think about what you are grateful for – this simple act can change your life. But how can that be, you ask? Well: • Because it reminds you of the positive things in your life. It makes you happy about the people in your life; whether they’re loved ones or just a stranger you met who was kind to you in some ways. • Because it turns bad things into good things. Having problems at work? Be grateful you have work. Be grateful you have challenges, and that life isn’t boring. Be grateful that you can learn from these challenges. Be thankful they make you a stronger person. • Because it reminds you of what’s important. It’s hard to complain about the little things when you give thanks that your children are alive and healthy. It’s hard to get stressed out over paying bills when you are grateful there is a roof over your head. • Because it reminds you to thank others. The simple act of saying “thank you” to someone can make a big difference in that person’s life. Calling them, emailing them, stopping by to say thank you… just taking that minute out of your life to tell them why you are grateful toward them is important to them. People like being appreciated for who they are and what they do. It costs you little, but makes someone else happy. And making someone else happy will make you happy. If you’re interested in living a life of gratitude, here are a few suggestions: • Morning gratitude session. Take 2-3 minutes each morning to give thanks, to whomever or whatever you’re grateful for. You don’t have to do anything, other than close your eyes and silently give thanks. This one act can make a huge difference. • Say thank you. When someone does something nice for you, Page 46

however small, try to remember to say thank you. And really mean it. • Call to say thanks. Sometimes you might think about something nice that someone did for you. Perhaps you remember during your gratitude session. When you do, pick up the phone and call the person, just to say thanks. Let them know what they did that you’re grateful for, and why you appreciate it. Even better is telling them in person. Or, send a thank you email — keep it short and sweet. • Give thanks for “negative” things in your life. There’s always two ways to look at something. Many times we think of something as negative — it’s stressful, harmful, sad, unfortunate, or difficult. But that same thing can be looked at in a more positive way. Giving thanks for those things is a great way to remind yourself that there is good in just about everything. Problems can be seen as opportunities to grow, to be creative. • Learn a gratitude prayer. There are many prayers, religious or not, that can remind you to be grateful. Find one you like, and print it out or make it your desktop wallpaper. You could write your own or find others on the Internet. Let me leave you with a prayer of gratitude that I’ve always found … well, perfect:
Be Thankful Be thankful that you don’t already have everything you desire, If you did, what would there be to look forward to? Be thankful when you don’t know something For it gives you the opportunity to learn. Be thankful for the difficult times. During those times you grow. Be thankful for your limitations Because they give you opportunities for improvement. Be thankful for each new challenge Because it will build your strength and character. Be thankful for your mistakes They will teach you valuable lessons. Be thankful when you’re tired and weary Because it means you’ve made a difference. It is easy to be thankful for the good things. A life of rich fulfillment comes to those who are also thankful for the setbacks. GRATITUDE can turn a negative into a positive. Mission: Sleep There are discussions ad infinitum focusing on support networks and counseling. While fully agreeing to their value, (some more than others), suppose the healing aspects of sleep are considered. Perhaps we can then interpret quality sleep as one of the prime criteria in our support network. The value of sleep is commonly underestimated and a little sleep loss is usually perceived as no big deal. Is sleep loss like running our truck with not enough air in the tires? We are (should be) aware of the effect of underinflated tires on our safety, vehicle and operating costs. Without dragging this analogy much further, (ad infinitum/ad nauseum), like a low tire we don’t pay much attention to, sleep loss can catch up to us. If medical causes of sleep loss are eliminated, take a look at your sleep support network. A mattress set is an important part of this network and is all about support. The kind of support that recognizes sleep is composed of stages (cycles) and the longer we are in a deeper sleep, the more rested we are. Some think a cloud is too hard and others think a slab of granite a little too soft. We sleep best in a position that allows our back (spine) to be naturally straighter and evenly supported along its length with extra support for the heavier areas, usually hip and lumbar regions, of our body. Most people notice that our bodies aren’t built in a straight line and sleeping on a slab of granite will leave some areas unsupported. Sleeping on a cloud – too soft – will cause us to bend where we shouldn’t. Our legs, arms and head require support that is yielding enough to allow us to be comfortable but not enough to cause stress on other parts of our body. Even the position we sleep in can have an effect on sleep patterns. There appear to be four basic positions; Side sleeper – very common and a good sleep position. Better to have slightly curled legs with possibly a small flat pillow between the knees if you have back pain. Back sleeper – fairly common and a good position (some debate). Those with back pain may want to put a small flat pillow under the back of knees. Try to minimize the angle of toe pointing – straight up is best if possible. Stomach sleeper – Try not to. It’s just bad. Possibly a very flat pillow under the stomach? Flopper – Usually falling asleep as is getting into bed. Looks something like a spread-eagle skydiver hitting the mattress. Suggest getting more sleep and a new mattress set. Your independent mattress retailer can help with information on your sleep support system and there is no shortage of information available on sleep. place. Plant material will improve the structure of the soil. If you do not clear the beds in the fall, the plant material left behind is broken down enough and can then be worked into the soil in spring. Be careful of weeds; make sure not to turn them under.

Chemical Free Gardening It’s getting harder to avoid pesticides, insecticides, and herbicides in our chemical world. Any fruits and vegetables we buy at the supermarket should be washed first to try and get rid of any chemicals used by the growers. Chemicals are used to help us grow bigger, better fruits and vegetables, but at what cost? Some of the chemicals used do find their way into our systems, no matter what we do.
Vegetables should be rotated. Flowers can be moved from time to time. Moving plants will help to avoid the build up of pathogens that collect around certain species. Some plants reach deeper into the soil than others, accessing nutrients from a new source. Grow nitrogen-fixing plants such as lupines, beans, or sweet peas. These plants will help the other plants to access nitrogen the chemical-free way. Avoid using chemicals as much as possible. If you use chemicals to get rid of the weeds, then you will need to use fertilizer to help the plants grow. It will become a vicious cycle. Instead, try using certain plants to attract helpful insects and repel harmful insects. Certain plants produce a natural repellent. Basil loves tomatoes, tomatoes like bee balm etc. Putting the right plants together is a good start. Building up the soil with compost and worm castings also will help.

VEGGIE HEADS Ok, ok – we hear you. It seems more and more of our readers are looking for an alternative lifestyle of eating. For those of you who have ordered the very healthy “I AM A…Fruits and Vegetables,” I hope you are enjoying reading all about the health benefits of eating fresh produce. So, since we have started down this healthy path with the publication of our 1st book, let’s just continue on. This is our 1st article for the Veggie Heads – all the recipes, tips and facts within this new column will be for all the vegetarians in the world (including our very own Denise!).
CAULIFLOWER PIZZA CRUST
4 cups chopped raw cauliflower, 3/4 cup garbanzo bean flour, 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, 2 large eggs, 1 tablespoon dried Italian Seasoning, 1 teaspoon coarse Celtic sea salt, For the toppings: 3/4 cup marinara sauce, 2 cups shredded Mozzarella cheese, Additional toppings like onions, peppers, zucchini etc. (optional) Preheat oven to 450ºF and adjust rack to middle position. Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper. Place all crust ingredients in a food processor or blender and process until pureed. Spoon mixture onto baking sheet lined with parchment paper, dividing into 4 servings. Using an spatula, spread each serving of cauliflower mixture into a 8’’ round (about 1/4’’ thick). Bake for 15 minutes. Remove from the oven and spread 2 heaping tablespoons of marinara on the crust. Top with mozzarella and any additional toppings. Bake for an additional 5 minutes until cheese is bubbly and just turning golden brown.
CHEESY BEAN AND CHEESE ENCHILADAS
1/2 cup flour, 1/2 cup nutritional yeast, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 2 cups water, 1/4 cup vegan margarine, 1 teaspoon mustard, 2 (10-ounce) cans enchilada sauce, 3 (14.5-ounce) cans beans, drained (e.g., white, kidney, pinto, black), 1 (15-ounce) can olives, drained and chopped, 2 medium onions, chopped, 1/2 cup salsa (optional), 1/4 cup chopped cilantro, 10 tortillas “Cheese” Sauce: In medium-large saucepan, combine flour, nutritional yeast, salt and garlic powder. Whisk in water. Heat on medium heat until bubbling and thick. Remove from heat and add margarine and mustard. Set aside 1/2 cup of the cheese sauce in separate container. Add all but ½ of the enchilada sauce, and all of the beans, olives, onions, salsa, and tomato to the saucepan; stir to combine. Coat the bottom of a 9” x 13” pan with some of the reserved enchilada sauce. Place a tortilla in the pan and lightly cover with more enchilada sauce. Spoon filling onto a tortilla, then roll the tortilla, and push it to one end of pan. Repeat until all tortillas are filled. Pour the rest of the enchilada sauce on top and spread on reserved cheese sauce. Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit until brown for 30 to 45 minutes. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Tofu is a “cheese-like” substance made from fermented soya-beans. Tofu doesn’t really have a lot of flavour itself, but it takes on the flavour of the foods/spices it is cooked with. In North America, you can buy tofu in most supermarkets, health-food stores, as well as in Asian food stores. Many vegetarians cook with tofu, as it is a good, nutritious substitute to meat. You might hear that becoming a vegetarian will make you more prone to getting sick. This is a myth. A balanced diet, whether vegetarian or otherwise, will provide your body with all the nutrients it needs. It’s hard to know exactly what percentage of the world’s population is vegetarian, but most people would agree that this number is roughly anywhere from 5-10%. This percentage is much higher in countries such as India, where religion often dictates vegetarianism. What’s cheaper - being a vegetarian or being a meat eater? This depends on you and what you like to eat. You can buy highly specialized vegetarian food from a fairly expensive health food store, or you can buy less expensive vegetarian options from a supermarket, etc. The range of vegetarian dishes is so vast, that it is possible to accommodate every budget. India has the highest number of vegetarians in the world 200 million. The majority of vegetarians in India live in the southern part of the country. Hinduism and Buddhism both have strong traditions of vegetarianism, though neither is a “vegetarian-only” religion. Wild mushrooms, prevalent in Europe, but available in some form or other all over the world, are a great alternative to meat. They can be substituted (like tofu) for meat in all kinds of dishes. So last month we received a question asking how you can improve your life when you are feeling out of balance, confused and conflicted. We discussed the importance of acknowledging the values in your life and realizing the needs that these values represent. When your internal values are not somehow acknowledged in the way you live and in the decisions you make, you can become depressed or otherwise dissatisfied in life. Your homework was to list and itemize the values that you identify as being meaningful to you in an order of importance. For example, we might state the following as our personal values important to us at this particular time in our life with #1 being the most important value: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10.
Family Spirituality Health Friends Career Adventure Education Creativity Finances Fitness
Now these personal values are great to determine, but unless you take it to the next step and clarify the value by representing it through an actual behaviour or activity, you won’t likely alter your life at all. So the process of taking it further will involve planning what behaviours or activities actually reflect the value identified. At this point, take each value and think up one activity that involves the value. For example, the value ‘FAMPage 50

ILY’ has many possible angles so you need to stop and think about what activity/behaviour will make you feel good about ‘FAMILY’. Perhaps spending time together is a goal, but you have to ask yourself specifically what you want to be doing. Playing sports together as a family might work for your situation, so now decide what sport and where will you do the sport. So this is the basic process of how you will work your way through all of your chosen values. Keep being more and more specific until you answer what the activity is, where it will take place, how often it will take place and for how long. 1. FAMILY – Spending time together playing soccer in the park on Saturdays after lunch for 15 minutes every week. As you work through the list, you are stimulating your imagination and getting creative about what is really important in your life that you may have been neglecting. You owe it to yourself to spend time identifying what activities inspire you and fulfill you. You can make this a family project by involving your kids or your partner in choosing some of the activities. However, make sure YOU pick out the activities (giving them the option from your selection), otherwise if you leave the activity selection entirely up to them, you might end up playing Wii every Saturday for 2 hours and that might not necessarily fulfill your personal needs of spending time with FAMILY. Now implement one of your specific goal activities and tweak it until it becomes what you desire. Put it on the calendar and make a point of completing the activity for several trials until it becomes a habit. Notice how your satisfaction is impacted by completing this activity and keep a journal, if desired. Next month we’ll investigate further ways that our values impact our quality of life. “Once you begin to understand and truly master your thoughts and feelings, that’s when you see how you create your own reality. Refreshing Summer Cocktail Ideas When summer’s heat is upon us and friends and family come together for backyard gatherings, you could serve the traditional iced tea and lemonade along with basic burgers and brats, or you could mix things up with some summer fusions. Summer encourages people to experiment with bold and refreshing flavours and what better time to have fun with fusion than at a backyard barbeque? Diversity and intensity of flavours are some of the primary characteristics of fusion food and beverages. Combining, for example, exotic Eastern ingredients with Western pantry staples is a great way to try out fusion cuisine. Take your grill fare up a notch by making Mediterranean fusion burgers – ground lamb spiced with garlic, onions, oregano and thyme and topped with feta cheese. Or make a Vietnamese fusion burger with ground pork spiced with onion, coriander, garlic and hot red pepper. If your guests are feeling brave, top it with a bit of nuoc mam, a traditional Vietnamese fish sauce. The fusion trend also carries over to light and refreshing summer beverages. Vodka, a pure and neutral spirit, provides a great base for natural fruit flavours. Add a bit of sparkle to sprightly fruit and you have the perfect summer cocktail. My review column is in its second year with the Newsy Neighbour. Please continue to join me each month as I explore a new read. I’ve had the opportunity to review worthwhile books by many local or regional Canadian authors, as well as some great international works. As always, my passions are fantasy and sciencefiction, but I am always on the lookout for more non-fiction, especially from local writers. I hope to build on the many bright spots and successes of 2011. MetalMagic: Talisman, the revised Canadian edition, was released in November, 2011 and I’m happy to announce that the sequel, MetalMagic: Revelation, should be available sometime in February, 2012. This fantastic story unfolds as the fabric of Dylan’s home and school life continue to unravel, with the troubled boy seeking asylum within the confines of this magical kingdom to deal with his real-world issues. Collin Paulson, author of Aarial, is a teacher in Calgary. His experiences in the classroom, and especially in dealing with students of all types, are very apparent. The book presents an excellent portrayal of how schools operate, particularly through the interactions between the students and their teacher. This novel is a good choice for children and teens who may be experiencing life challenges and, like Dylan, feel lost, alone, or disconnected. And although Dylan’s difficulties are many, he is far from a one-dimensional character and Paulson has succeeded in creating a protagonist who young readers of all backgrounds can identify and empathize with. Will Aarial offer Dylan the means to accept his situation and cope with his environment, or will he fail in his quest to save the realm? And what about his connection to the real world—is Dylan meant to have some lasting, positive effect on his classmates, or is this just another stop on his unfortunate journey? It is worth picking up this engaging, well-written young adult fantasy novel to find out.

There are several things we can do to help our critters cope with moving, and please discuss options with your veterinarian to find out what is best for them. Here are a few things to keep in mind: FIRST... Call your vet and book an appointment. They advise not to wait until the last minute to do this, because there are several things to consider including pet records, possible vaccinations and great advise on keeping your pet comfortable and safe. 1) Try to keep to your normal schedule as much as possible. Routines are very important, especially when so much else around them is changing. Feed and/or walk your pet at the same time that you would normally. 2) Go into your new dwellings first before you bring your pet in. If you don’t have anywhere to leave your pet or are traveling alone, keep your pet on a leash or in a carrier at first. Inspect your new home for anything that might be harmful, such as wet paint, sawdust, broken glass or bare wires. 3) Once you are sure that it is safe, release your pet from the carrier or the leash. Make sure that all doors and windows are closed for the time being. Allow your pet to get used to your new dwellings. 4) Lay out familiar items, such as a familiar bed and toys. 5) Take time out to play with your pet. Give them time to associate their new home as a positive place. 6) Make sure that you update their ID tags. If your pet is microchipped, make sure that information is changed as well. Since you are in a new place, it will be easier for your pet to get lost, as they are in a new environment. 7) Go over your new yard very carefully to make sure it is dog or cat proof, there are no harmful items or chemicals, the gates close, the fence is secure and your pets can’t escape. Your pet may be confused with the new surroundings. Have patience and understand this is a confusing time. 8) For outdoor cats, keep them inside for a few nights until they get acclimatized. The guy goes into the backyard and sees a black mutt just sitting there. “You talk?” he asks. “Yep,” the mutt replies. “So, what’s your story?” The mutt looks up and says, “Well, I discovered this gift pretty young and I wanted to help the government, so I told the CIA about my gift, and in no time they had me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, because no one figured a dog would be eavesdropping. “I was one of their most valuable spies eight years running. The jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn’t getting any younger and I wanted to settle down. So I signed up for a job at the airport to do some undercover security work, mostly wandering near suspicious characters and listening in. I uncovered some incredible dealings there and was awarded a batch of medals. Had a wife, a mess of puppies, and now I’m just retired.” The guy is amazed. He goes back in and asks the owner what he wants for the dog. The owner says, “Ten dollars.” The guy says, “This dog is amazing. Why on earth are you selling him, so cheap? The owner replies, “He’s such a liar. He didn’t do any of that stuff.”
