MAY is for MOTHER’S!! And what a fabulous month May is – the month of spring and new life is sprouting up all around us. It’s a time when mama birds are having baby birds the blossoms are coming on the trees, the tulips are pushing their way through and a new season is upon us. May could not be a better month for Mother’s Day; whomever planned it was genius. I’ll bet it was a Mother!! I always look forward to our May Issue; it seems it is always the beginning of all sorts of new events and ideas for the magazine. If I compared this May 2016 Issue to last year’s May 2015 Issue, I could tell you there has been so many changes I just would not know where to start. All our new contributors has at least doubled and with the addition of the “The Newsy Neighbour Festival” (the 1st annual was last June), “The Shopping Challenge,” and now “DigitalMania” and “A Business Affair” – we are living up to our goal to promote our local businesses and bring towns and people together, now more than ever. Our “Newsy Festival” this year is going to be huge and with the help of many local businesses and New Space Construction, we very well may have the music event of the year – our line of musicians is astonishing, including Head Liner Jaydee Bixby and one of our own, Samm Smith, who you will be seeing on the new season of The Voice!! I am so excited I just don’t know how I’m going to contain myself until June 18th! Almost all our articles this month are for all the moms out there with special gift ideas, recipes, affirmations, being beautiful, flowers, happiness, being present in your life, adult colouring (you should try it), fruit wines, chocolate brownie cake, women talk, super women syndrome and that’s just the icing on the cake. You just cannot read all this Issue in one sitting, so if you join “DigitalMania” you can take us with you wherever you may be!! You will never be alone - The Newsy Neighbour will be there with you. Have the most wonderful May ever and may something wonderful happen for you today and every day!

Affirmations for Mother's

LEASING

I’m always wondering how to be a better mom, often beating myself up because I falter in this motherhood thing. So I’m teaching myself to look at mothering differently and try not to take everything so personal. So this brings me to the word “affirmations,” which is emotional support or encouragement. Using these affirmations I found could be a daily event where you spend some quality time with your children, teaching them some good “healthy thinking habits”. You could do this every morning before you send them off to school, starting the day out with a happy and positive attitude. Let’s call it our own personal “Healthy Mind 30 day Challenge”. Start Day One saying the affirmation first thing in the morning and as many times as you think about it throughout your day. What do you have to lose? It’s certainly not going to hurt anyone!

403-263-4449

Affirmations

1. I love myself. 2. I can do anything I put my mind to. 3. I am successful in whatever I do. 4. I am loved. 5. I am making things happen. 6. I trust myself in making great decisions. 7. I persist with confidence. 8. I embrace my fears fully and calmly. 9. I deeply love and accept myself. 10. I am able to solve problems creatively. 11. I am vibrant and have lots of energy. 12. I appreciate every single moment of the day. 13. There is a solution to every problem. 14. I feel the joy of abundance. 15. The universe provides for my every want and need. 16. I see endless opportunities before me. 17. I am inspired to take action every day. 18. I am powerfully positive in everything I think, do and say. 19. I radiate positive energy. 20. Everything I do turns into success. 21. I am living my full potential. 22. I see the bright side in all situations. 23. I am in control of my life. 24. Today, I will spread joy in random and beautiful ways. 25. I am strong.

With 29 years of experience, we look forward to working with you for your accounting needs.

Did you know that the quality of your life is the way you think about yourself, how happy you are and the level of your self-esteem? One small action can change the world; it’s just like the ripple effect. The Ripple Effect is based on the understanding that we are all connected. These connections stretch like an incredibly interwoven and complicated tapestry. Each of us exists within this tapestry. Thoughts and actions are like stones dropped in a pond and they create ripples that travel outward. Everything we do and think affects the people in our lives and their reactions, in turn, affect others. The choices you make have far-reaching consequences. Each of us carries within us the capacity to change the world in small ways for better or worse. We can use the principles of the Ripple Effect to magnify our actions and their effects. So let’s get started today, together; it always seems easier when you know someone else is there with you! Let’s change our lives and perhaps the world!! Let’s have fun with this – it is not a chore, it is an experience. Kathryn Hartwell

level and anyone that knows me knows I love to decorate (one of my favourite passions).

And what a fabulous month May is – the month of spring and new life is sprouting up all around us, a time when mama birds are having baby birds, the blossoms are coming on the trees, the tulips are pushing their way through and a new season is upon us. May could not be a better month for Mother’s Day, whomever planned it was genius. I’ll bet it was a mother!! This Mother’s Day will have special meaning for me, as we have just decided to put in a mother-in-law suite in our lower level and my mother will be coming to live with us. It will be a bit of a compromise for all involved. My husband must give up his “Man Cave” and I’m sure all will feel they must give up a bit of their own privacy. I’ve been doing a bit of research on parents moving in with their adult children and have found this is becoming a more common occurrence and I’m sure the economy has a lot to do with it. Naturally, these decisions aren't only made because of economics. Most of us have at least a little of the "we take care of our own" mentality. Our parents took care of us and now it's our turn to take care of them. I must tell the truth—I was a bit taken back with the whole idea in the beginning and it threw me into a spiral for a few days. I had a lot of soul searching and a bit of forgiving to do before I decided that not only was it the right thing to do, it was the only way I could help my aging mother. I know any of my children would do the same for me (right?? RIGHT?). Quite frankly, the more I think about it, the less worried I become and I understand it’s a life-changing step for my mother as well. So I’ve decided I’m going to make this May fabulous and fantastic and probably have the BIGGEST garage sale of all time. I will be designing and creating a whole new living space in my lower

A recent AARP study shows the number of multi-generational households has jumped from 6.2 million to 7.1 million in the last two years -- a faster growth rate than the previous eight years combined. WOW! From all I have read, it’s all about pre-planning, clear boundaries and open communication to help preserve the harmony. The move can bring rewards as well as stresses. Besides saving money and keeping an aging loved one safe, in many families, a blended household forges closer bonds between the generations. Children will always remember Grandma baking cookies for them and attending school plays. If you are thinking about moving your aging mother in, the best advice is to be realistic. Moving a parent in with you changes the family dynamic and requires planning ahead and honest communication about ground rules and boundaries, says David Horgan, co-author of "When Your Parent Moves In". He also says that you can't treat an elder like a house guest, always putting on 'company manners'. At the same time, you've got to preserve the core family's unity while not making your parent feel useless or invisible. I’m sure we will have our ups and downs – but – mom is mom. Make sure you treat your own mother to the best Mother’s Day celebration ever.

About Being A Mom Mom, I’m sorry for all the things I did when I was a kid. Will you please take off the curse that my kids will be 10x’s worse than me? I can’t take it anymore. My daughter asked me what it’s like to have kids, so I interrupted her every 11 seconds until she cried. Cleaning with children in the house is like brushing your teeth while eating oreos. Motherhood: Powered by love. Fueled by coffee. Sustained by wine. I’m a parent. I ponder the unfathomable circumstance that I somehow have offspring even though I have no idea what I am doing but it sure seems like everybody else does because they’re constantly judging me. As if I don’t love my kids, which of course I do, but the little buggers are going to need therapy no matter what and in all honesty, I couldn’t adore them more but sometimes I think I’m going out of my mind with self-doubt! It’s all fun and games until you have to wake up and be a parent at 6:00 A.M. Mess with me? I’ll let karma do its job. Mess with my family? I BECOME karma.

I am your biggest fan. I am your protector. I will always defend you. I will get angry. I will get frustrated. I will be proud of you. I will be your confidant. I will love you unconditionally because forever and always, I am your mom!

Meaningful Mother's Day Gifts Give up some of your time for her

As Mother's Day approaches, it's time to start thinking of ways to show your mom just how much you love and appreciate her. Whether you live in the same neighbourhood or have settled thousands of miles away, one of these meaningful gifts should be perfect.

Make a beautiful photo album

Most mothers would be delighted to receive an ornate photo album filled with fun and touching images from the past. There are many different ways to organize this type of gift, too. For example, you could present the photos in chronological order, starting with images of you and your mom from your childhood and ending with a photo taken very recently. Alternatively, you could broaden the album to include images of important family memories that include your father, siblings and other loved ones.

Treat her to dinner

If your mom rarely gets any time to herself due to family commitments or a hectic work schedule, she will really appreciate being taken out to dinner on a weekend day. You could either chose a restaurant that you know she loves, or treat her to a meal somewhere new and exciting. Encourage her to order anything she likes, and just enjoy spending time together.

Make sure to check pages 26-33 for some incredible local restaurants. 18 •

thenewsyneighbour.com

When it comes to gifts, most people care more about the thought and effort behind the gesture than they do about the money involved. If you know this is true of your mom, you might be best to give her the gift of your time and energy. Is she longing to redecorate her living room? Would she appreciate your company when she is pursuing one of her individual interests, such as going to a concert or playing a sport? The key is to think

of something that you could do with your time that would either help her or enhance her enjoyment of an experience.

Give her something personalized

There is plenty of scope for creativity and imagination when it comes to giving personalized gifts. If your mom is a huge fan of a particular TV show, a mug with a favourite character can be an ideal choice, while a mother who loves her pets might appreciate a personalized cat bowl or a gift certificate for a dog grooming service. When you're considering this gift option, don't forget that you can personalize almost anything. From calendars to t-shirts, stationary and phone covers, there are endless objects that can be turned into hilarious or touching gifts with the addition of the right quote or photograph.

Pay for a spa treatment

A spa treatment is another ideal gift for a busy, over-worked mom who is in desperate need of time to relax. Whether you book her a massage, buy her a full weekend at a resort or choose some soothing skin treatments for her to enjoy, this gesture clearly sends a message of love and care. Depending on the time and money you have at your disposal, you might also want to consider going with her in order to turn the spa trip into a more social experience. The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

Super Woman Syndrome vs The Genuine Super Woman Being a woman is not always easy! Constantly trying to get ‘everything done for everyone’ is probably why the Super Woman Syndrome has been passed on from generation to generation. While most women recognize this in themselves, knowing what to do about it is not always easy. To begin with, many of us were raised by Super Women; a woman who does everything and anything with regards to other people’s needs. They make sure husbands’ are happy, fed and have clean clothes. They usually do most of the housework and often the yard work. Add to that the responsibility of paying the bills and banking. Now let’s throw into the mix two or three kids, a cat, a dog and a fish, along with a full time job. She looks after everyone and everything so the fair questions are, “When does she have time to look after herself?” “How does she do it?” and “How long can she keep doing this?” When a Super Woman is caught up in this cycle day in and day out, year after year without any help, support or down time, she becomes weak, ill, and even depressed. These women experience many negative feelings; including low self-worth or she puts herself down because she just cannot keep up. She feels empty inside and that she is letting everyone down. She experiences loneliness as there is not enough time to just be with her family for times of fun or relaxation. Soon, everyone starts to feel the stress! All these signs and symptoms are known as “The Super Woman Syndrome.” This is where a woman gives up who she really is and the things that make her happy, healthy, and are important to her. Getting enough sleep, proper nutrition and exercise, time for self, and even her dreams all slip away. Now do you feel this is fair to her? Really think about this. Are you the Super Woman or have one in your life? How can we as 2016 women STOP the syndrome? How can we STOP giving away our time, energy and even ourselves in order to please others? Well for one thing, realizing this really does not help anyone; not family, co-workers, or even friends. As Super Women, we must stop enabling the people around us. How can we instead become Genuine Super Women? Through self-love! That is where a woman looks after herself first so she can become healthy, strong, powerful and happy. One way to do this is to start using the word “NO,” especially with people who take advantage of you. Set boundaries. Teach your kids, husband, co-workers and even some friends how to become responsible for their own stuff; including health, hygiene, schedules and emotions. You can designate chores to your family so they help around the house and yard more. Most kids love to help out. Getting your kids to take on more responsibilities in their own lives, gives them the gift to start respecting themselves and others. Break the Super Woman Syndrome. Show your children they can be strong members of society; responsible and empowered through being the right role model for them. Be an example of how looking after and respecting oneself is an expression of self-love. 2016’s Genuine Super Women look after their physical, mental and spiritual health, their happiness and their dreams. This is the

true gift of self-love; by nurturing, healing, growing, sharing and caring of themselves first. Filling your cup up first provides the energy, power and the love needed as you guide your family on their own journey. You can take care of others and take care of yourself. So what kind of woman are you? One with the Super Women Syndrome or 2016’s True Super Woman through selflove? For me, I am learning more and more each day to practice self-care and self-love. Remember, only you can decide to break the cycle. Congrats if you have started a life of self-love, and keep up the fantastic job! A special shout out to all moms out there, “Happy Mother’s Day!”

How to Improve Your Garden Soil Using Home Composting ore and more people are starting to see the benefits of growing their own food in a small backyard vegetable garden. Apart from saving money, having a garden can be a great way to reduce stress, work together as a family and have the personal satisfaction of doing something creative and useful for the environment. One great way to improve the productivity of a vegetable or flower garden is to produce your own compost. This article explains the best approach to home composting, making it easy for you to get started straight away. Composting is simply a way of speeding up the natural process of rotting that takes place in forests, fields and other landscapes all over the world. All you need for composting is organic materials, naturally-occurring microorganisms to break down these materials, oxygen and water to help them do their work. If possible, some physical mixing of the compost is also very helpful. Most gardens and households have plenty of organic matter in the form of lawn and shrub clippings, weeds, newspaper, cardboard, kitchen waste and leaves. If you keep chickens, their droppings are also very useful as a compost additive. To create the highest quality compost, you will need a carbon/ nitrogen (C:N) ratio of about 30:1. Weeds, lawn clippings and food wastes typically have a C:N ratio in the range 10:1 to 35:1, whereas the ratios for paper and straw are about 170:1 and 100:1, respectively.

Landscaping

This means that the bulk of your composting material should be 'dry', carbon-rich waste, with a relatively small amount of 'green', nitrogen-rich material mixed in to create the right proportions. While this may seem a bit too mathematical, you don't need to get all scientific when it comes to making compost. If you have about three quarters dry waste and one quarter green waste, this will make a good compost pile.

Landscaping

The best approach is to build or buy a two-bay or preferably three-bay structure in which to compost your materials. This allows you to fill one bay and then leave the waste to break down as you move on to the second and then third bays. By the time the third bay is full, the first bay should be full of beautiful compost that is ready to use. If you can afford it and want to get set up fairly quickly, buy three HDPE compost bins with lids and line them up in a convenient corner of the garden. It is best to locate them away from direct sunlight and in a place where they won't get blown over by the wind. Most gardens will have space for this, as round compost bins are typically only about one meter high and half a meter in diameter. Rest each bin on a piece of bird wire with small holes. This will stop rodents from digging underneath and feasting on any food scraps, while allowing soil microorganisms (including worms) and moisture to pass through the mesh. To speed things up, add a bag of commercial composting worms. If you have a large amount of material to break down, you can always increase the size of the composting bays. Wooden pallets are a good resource for the walls of each bay, as long as they aren't made out of treated pine. If possible, it is a good idea to fill in the gaps between the pallet planks with other second-hand timber. You can also use an old piece of carpet to cover the top of each bay. If you only add material gradually to your compost piles, it is likely that they will stay fairly cool and take several months to mature, which is fine as long as you have several bins or bays in various stages of completion. If you want a quicker result and have enough material to create a big pile of compost in one go, the process will be faster as heat-loving bacteria will dominate the process and produce a 'hot' compost heap. If you have ever seen steam rising from a pile of organic material when you turn it over with a fork, this is essentially a hot composting process at work. Whichever method you use, it is best to shred any 'waste' material as finely as possible before adding it to the bin. Remember that woody waste can take many months to fully break down, so shredded wood chips are best put directly onto ornamental gardens as mulch rather than using them as compost material. Check the bins once a week and

You will be able to tell when your compost is ready by simply lifting the surface matter away with a fork and examining the material underneath. If it is a dark colour, crumbly in texture and has a rich, earthy smell, it is ready to use. Simply spread it out over your bare veggie or flower garden to a depth of a few centimeters, and turn the soil over with a garden fork. Landscape Architects & Designers

Plan and design your landscape. They will discuss your vision for your space and help you to create the artwork that becomes your landscaping. They will help you choose plants and materials. In contemporary practice, landscape design bridges between landscape architecture and garden design.

Landscape Contractors

Install your landscape features, including the softscapes, like soil and vegetation, and hardscapes, like fences, water elements, stones, and walkways.

Landscape Managers

Focus on improving and maintaining your existing landscape. If you don’t want to take on regular maintenance yourself, you may want to hire a landscape manager. Landscape managers will work with you year round and also provide snow and ice removal.

Horticulturists

Sometimes called horticulturalists, are the plant experts. A horticulturist goes one step beyond and knows the science behind different plants, flowers, and greenery. If your plants aren’t growing, your leaves are being eaten by pests, or you live in a particular climate for vegetation, you may want to work with a horticulturist.

Arborists

By definition, an arborist is an individual trained in the art and science of planting, caring for, and maintaining individual trees. They know about fertilization and nutritional needs, as well as bracing, and support for newly planted trees and garden plants. spray the rotting material with water to keep it moist and help the natural molds, fungi, bacteria and worms to get on with their job. It is also helpful to turn the material over with a garden fork every month so that any un-rotted material gets its chance in the middle of the heap.

Landscaping

Now that spring has arrived, the thought of which flowers to choose for your garden may come to mind. There are so many different varieties to choose from; how on earth do you decide? I think after you have checked out whether your flowers will be in full sun or full shade or a little of both, the first question you must ask yourself is whether you want perennials or annuals.

What is the difference between an Annual and a Perennial? An annual will perform their entire life cycle from seed to flower to seed within a single growing season. All roots, stems and leaves of the plant die annually. Annuals tend to bloom all season long, and are often bright and showy. Though you will have to replant next year (or choose another plant to put in your annual’s place), annual plants tend to be cheaper than perennials and are less of a commitment. Some annuals are “self-seeding,” meaning you may wind up with new flowers the following year without having to plant them yourself, though they won’t be exactly where you planted this year. Popular annuals for the central Alberta region include zinnias, viola, marigolds, petunias, sunflowers, snapdragons, nasturtium, alyssum, begonia, dahlia, asters, daisy, strawflower and impatiens.

mums, yarrow, lavender, arctic fire, foxglove, echinacea, sage, hollyhocks and daylilies. If you keep an eye out around your community, it will become apparent which perennials do well in your region.

Gardening Tips Think about planting some daylilies among your tulips in sunny areas of the garden. Emerging daylily foliage will hide the yellowing foliage of tulips after they bloom. Cut new edges where the garden meets the lawn. Standing on the lawn, rake leaves from the garden. Avoid walking on the beds until the soil has dried out some. Avoid raking too early in the season as emerging perennial plant tips may incur frost damage. If necessary, clean leaves

Perennials are plants that persist for many growing seasons; generally the top portion of the plant dies back each winter and regrows the following spring from the same root system. Perennials live for three or more growing seasons. They can be planted from bulb or seed – often bulbs must be planted in the fall to produce spring-blooming plants – or you can purchase young plants at a nursery to plant in the spring. Perennials generally have shorter blooming periods than annuals, so gardeners often pair them with perennials that bloom at other times to maintain constant colour from spring to autumn. Some cold-weather perennials include roses, peonies, tulips,

Petunias It’s never too early to start planning your summer garden! Whether you are filling containers and hanging baskets or filling your garden beds, petunias are a wonderful way to add colour all summer long. These annual flowers grow well in our southern Alberta climate and are available in almost every colour - pink, purple, white, violet, and yellow. Whatever you choose, they are best panted in large groupings where the plentiful blooms are sure to please. As you plan your flower beds and containers, remember that petunias prefer full sun. In the extreme heat of the summer, partial shade will help your containers from drying out and your blossoms wilting. When you are RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL • LAWN MAINTENANCE

around emerging plants by hand. Garden soil can be worked when the ground is free of frost and sufficiently dried out. Working garden soil while it is still wet from spring rains and melting snows can damage soil texture. The soil is too wet to work if it forms a firm ball when you squeeze it. Before new growth starts, cut back ornamental grasses and other perennial plants left standing for winter interest or those that were not cut back in fall. Cut back woody perennials, such as Russian sage, to 12 inches in mid-April. Uproot perennial weeds, such as dandelions, by hand. Don’t use a hoe as growing shoots below the ground may be damaged. Remove winter mulch. Divide summer and fall-blooming perennials when they first start to show signs of growth in spring, ideally on a cloudy day. Wait until fall to divide spring and summer-blooming perennials. Use a knife or spade to help with the division. When replanting, be certain to add organic matter to the planting hole to give the roots a healthy start. Add perennial and grass clippings to your compost pile. Next spring you will have fresh organic-rich compost for your garden at no cost!

where coffee really shines is in its high content of antioxidants. The average person who eats a typical Western diet actually gets more antioxidants from coffee than the fruits and vegetables they eat. Coffee contains caffeine, a stimulant that can enhance brain function and boost metabolism. Caffeine is the most commonly consumed psychoactive substance in the world. Soft drinks, tea and chocolate all contain caffeine, but coffee is the biggest source. The caffeine content of a single cup can range from 30-300 mg, but the average cup is somewhere around 90-100 mg. Caffeine is a known stimulant. In the brain, it blocks the function of an inhibitory neurotransmitter (brain hormone) called adenosine. By blocking adenosine, caffeine actually increases activity in the brain and the release of other neurotransmitters like norepinephrine and dopamine. This reduces tiredness and makes us feel more alert. There are numerous studies showing that caffeine can lead to a short-term boost in brain function including improved mood, reaction time, vigilance and general cognitive function. Caffeine can also boost metabolism (calories burned) by 3-11% and even increase exercise performance by 11-12%, on average. However, some of these effects are likely to be short-term. If you drink coffee every day, then you will build a tolerance to it and the effects will be less powerful. Coffee may help protect your brain in old age, leading to reduced risk of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common neurodegenerative disease and a leading cause of dementia. Studies have shown that coffee drinkers have up to a 65% lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. Parkinson’s is the second most common neurodegenerative disease and caused by the death of dopamine-generating neurons in the brain. Coffee drinkers have a 32-60% lower risk of Parkinson’s disease. The more coffee people drink, the lower the risk. Coffee drinkers have a lower risk of liver diseases. The liver is an incredibly important organ that has hundreds of different functions in the body. It is very sensitive to modern insults like excess alcohol and fructose intake. The end stage of liver damage is called Cirrhosis, and involves most of the liver being replaced with scar tissue. Coffee drinkers have up to an 84% lower risk of developing cirrhosis, with the strongest effect for those who drink 4 or more cups per day. Liver cancer is also common—it is the second leading cause of cancer death worldwide. Coffee drinkers have up to a 40% lower risk of liver cancer. WOW – truthfully I gave up drinking coffee over a year ago; I may have made a big mistake! Dig the coffee pot out, honey! O.K. now I said I was going to give you both sides. Here is the bad stuff about coffee.

BAD SIDE

To drink or not to drink, that is the question?

One day it is a super healthy beverage and the next it is harmful. It is high in antioxidants and linked to a reduced risk of many diseases, however it also contains caffeine, a stimulant that can cause problems in some people and disrupt sleep - what is a girl to think? I’m so confused. Let’s put an end to this right now. As always, I turned to the internet to do some in-depth investigation on the truth about COFFEE. Here are both sides to the argument.

GOOD SIDE

Coffee contains some essential nutrients and is extremely high in antioxidants that come from the coffee beans. A typical 8 oz cup of coffee contains 11% of the RDA (Recommended Dietary Allowance) of Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin), 6% of Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid), 2% of Vitamin B1 (Thiamin), 2% of Vitamin B3 (Niacin), 1% of Folate, 3% of Manganese, 3% of Potassium, 2% of Magnesium and 1% of phosphorus. This may not seem like a lot, but if you drink 3 or 4 cups per day, it can add up to a significant portion of your daily nutrient intake. But

The truth is… there are some important negative aspects to coffee as well (although this depends on the individual). Consuming too much caffeine can lead to jitteriness, anxiety, heart palpitations and may even exacerbate panic attacks. If you are sensitive to caffeine and tend to become overstimulated, then perhaps you shouldn’t be drinking coffee. Another unwanted side effect is that it can disrupt sleep. If coffee reduces the quality of your sleep, then try avoiding coffee late in the day, such as after 2:00 pm. Caffeine can also have some diuretic and blood pressure raising effects, but this usually goes away with regular use. However, an increase in blood pressure of 1-2 mm/Hg may persist. Caffeine is addictive and missing a few cups can lead to withdrawal. When people consume caffeine regularly, they become tolerant to it. It either stops working as it used to, or a larger dose is needed to get the same effects. When people abstain from caffeine, they get withdrawal symptoms like headache, tiredness, brain fog and irritability. This can last for a few days. Tolerance and withdrawal are the hallmarks of physical addiction. A lot of people (understandably) don’t like the idea of being literally dependent on a chemical substance in order to function properly. Unfiltered coffee —such as Turkish coffee, or coffee made with a French press —can increase your LDL ("bad") cholesterol levels. And women who drink more than five cups of coffee a day may have more The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

Now, I’m not sure what to think!! I suppose it is just like anything else – everything in moderation. Too much of a good thing can be bad for you. It sounds like there are some very healthy benefits of drinking coffee, but there are some concerns also. The decision must be up to the individual to decide.

Restaurants & Food

trouble getting pregnant with in vitro fertilization than women who don't. In addition, a 2006 study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that for people who metabolize caffeine slowly can increase the risk of nonfatal heart attacks. If your body isn’t used to caffeine, the chemical causes your blood vessels to narrow, which in turn cranks up your blood pressure. But a few hours later, your vessels return to normal and the effect fades. There are also reports hinting that people with cholesterol issues may have more problems if they drink some kinds of coffee. Compounds called cafestol, present in coffee beans, appear to raise LDL cholesterol—though paper filters eliminate most of those compounds, making it more of a concern with French press and espresso-style brews. The caffeine in coffee increases catecholamines, your stress hormones. The stress response elicits cortisol and increases insulin. Insulin increases inflammation and this makes you feel lousy. Unfiltered coffee has the highest amount of beneficial antioxidants yet also leaks the most diterpenes into your system. These diterpenes have been linked to higher levels of triglycerides, LDL and VLDL levels. The helpful chlorogenic acids in coffee may delay glucose absorption in the intestine and have also been shown to increase homocysteine levels – an indicator for increased risk of cardiovascular disease. The acidity of coffee is associated with digestive discomfort, indigestion, heart burn, GERD and dysbiosis (imbalances in your gut flora).

Water FIRST THING in the Morning It has long been known that drinking water first thing in the morning on an empty stomach purifies the body’s internal system. An especially important result of this treatment is that it cleanses the colon, which makes the body much more able to absorb nutrients from food.

1 large sweet red pepper, cored and seeded 1/4 Cup thinly sliced onion 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1 Tbsp. olive oil 3 Tbsp. honey 3 Tbsp. red wine vinegar 2 tsp. dried basil, crushed 1/2 tsp. salt 2 whole lettuce leaves 2 oz. goat cheese Toasted baguettes Thinly slice red pepper. Sauté pepper, onion and garlic in oil 10 minutes or until onion and pepper are tender. Add honey, vinegar, basil, salt and pepper; cook and stir over medium-high heat until glazed. Serve on lettuce line plates with goat cheese and toasted baguettes. As one of nature’s little miracles, honey deserves an honoured place in your pantry and on your tongue! LusciousJOYS Luscious

Luscious Joys is just for mothers this month; to brighten your day, put a smile on your face and make you feel special (because you are). No one in the world can replace a “Mom”. After all, your children would not be here if it wasn’t for YOU; just think about that for a moment. No one deserves a more royal treatment than you—the wonderful person you are.

So for the children… Here are two Luscious and easy recipes you can make for your mother on Mother’s Day or any day – it does not have to be Mother’s Day to make your MOM feel special and loved. Also, don’t forget to take her out for a special brunch, lunch or dinner too. Indulge with her at one of the many highly-rated local restaurants our communities have to offer. She deserves to be spoiled. There is absolutely nothing better or more Luscious in this whole world than a great brownie and I think I have finally found the perfect recipe.

Hours Monday-Wednesday 11 am - 8 pm Thursday, Friday, Saturday, 11-9

Chocolate Brownie Cake 7 Tbsp. butter 1 Cup powdered sugar 1/3 Cup light brown sugar ½ Cup chocolate chips 1 Tbsp. golden syrup 2 eggs 1 Tsp vanilla ½ Cup plain flour ½ Tsp baking powder 2 Tbsp. cocoa powder Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease and line an 8” x 8” cake tin. Place the butter, powdered sugar, brown sugar, chocolate chips and golden syrup in the pan and melt gently on a low heat until it is smooth and lump-free. Remove the pan from the heat. Break the eggs into the bowl and whisk with the fork until light and frothy. Add the eggs, vanilla extract, flour, baking powder and cocoa powder to the chocolate mixture and mix thoroughly. Put the mixture into the greased and lined cake tin and place on the middle shelf of the oven. Bake for 25-30 minutes. Open 7 days a week for your convenience

These sound delightful; I would love to receive these from my children.

200g bar white chocolate (Belgian white chocolate is ideal) ½ Cup butter 6 rich tea biscuits or 12 rich tea fingers 4 green glacé cherries 1/3 Cup dried cranberries 2 Tbsp. raisins

ALL YOU CAN EAT COMING IN MAY

Break the chocolate straight into a large microwave-proof bowl. Using a round-bladed knife cut the butter into rough chunks and add to the chocolate. Microwave on medium for about 3 minutes, stirring once, until melted. If you don’t have a microwave, pour a few inches of boiling water from a kettle into a small saucepan. Set the bowl over the pan so that it doesn’t touch the water, and let the water bubble very gently until the chocolate and butter have melted. Stir the mixture until smooth, set aside to allow it to cool to room temperature, stirring once or twice as it cools. While the chocolate is cooling, place the biscuits in a large bowl and scrunch them with your hands. Put the pieces into a large, thick freezer bag and seal the top. Crush the biscuits into little crumbs by bashing them with a rolling pin. Don’t completely crush them – they should have some crunch left in them. Rinse the cherries in a sieve under a warm water tap and pat dry with kitchen paper. Then cut them into pieces so they are the same size as the cranberries and raisins. Stir the biscuits and all the fruits into the melted chocolate and butter, chill in the bowl for about 2 hours until the mixture is almost solid. Tear off a sheet of cling wrap and spread it out on a work surface. Scoop out half of the chilled mixture, shape into a long roll on top of the cling wrap and wrap it up. Repeat with the remaining mixture. Chill overnight to firm up. The rolls can be kept in the fridge for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 2 months. Unwrap each roll and carefully cut into 16 rounds – you might find a serrated knife easier for this.

No Bake Graham Cracker Cheesycake Low Fat Graham Crackers 8 oz. fat free cream cheese (softened) 1 cup cold skim milk 2 Tbsp. lemon juice 1 small box instant vanilla pudding (sugar free) 8 oz. fat free Cool Whip 1 can lite cherry pie filling (or any flavour) Line the bottom of a 9 x 13 pan with whole graham crackers. Beat the cream cheese until smooth. Add milk and lemon juice to the cream cheese and beat until smooth. Stir in pudding mix, and then fold in Cool Whip. Spread 1/2 of cream cheese mixture over graham crackers. Repeat with another layer of graham crackers and cream cheese mixture. Spread pie filling over top. Refrigerate overnight for graham crackers to soften. Enjoy :) There you have it!

For those of us that love to make or buy fruit wines, the question of pairing food and fruit wines always comes up. Pairing food with regular grape wines is also an art, but there is so much information out there in books and on the internet, that making pairing decisions is a lot easier than with fruit wines. There simply is not a lot of information available on fruit wines, and most successful pairings come about through trial and error. Some time ago, I worked with an Alberta winery, Field Stone Fruit Wines, on pairing their wines with food for a group session at Calgary Farmer’s Market. I thought I would share this to get your taste buds

Fruit Wines

flowing and inspire you to come up with your own fruit wine and food pairing. There are so many possibilities, but here are just a few.

Generally speaking, wine pairing is all about balance in the mouth. We do not want two competing flavours in the mouth; wine must complement the food, not compete with it for dominance. It must accentuate the flavour of the food, not overpower it. On the other hand, if the wine it too light for the food, it will get lost in the mouth. It must not be too weak, but not overpower the food either. Flavours must match. We’re after balance, not competition… sort of like the perfect marriage.

1. Black Currant Fruit Wine:

With grape wines, there are certain underlying principles that determine how you pair foods with wine. Underlying these principles are the basic tastes and flavours. These are: sourness, sweetness, bitterness, saltiness, fattiness, hot & spicy, and fruitiness. To match these tastes and flavours, we must heed three basic principles: 1) Match the most predominant building blocks in the wine to the same ones found in the food.

32 •

thenewsyneighbour.com

Dry, delicate aroma, crisp finish. Food Pairing: Sushi. Reason for the pairing: The wine is light and delicate and will not overpower the fish.

2. Cherry Fruit Wine:

A balanced but intense nose, delicate palate, slightly acidic finish and easy to drink. Food Pairing: A salmon-based dish. Reason for pairing: The slightly bigger nose of the wine will be able to match the higher flavoured salmon.

3. Raspberry Fruit Wine

Dried fruit nose, off-dry, good structure and mellow finish. Food Pairing: Rosemary Chicken. Reason for pairing: The body of the raspberry is smooth and well structured but the tannins are low enough to go well with poultry and not over power it.

4. Strawberry/Rhubarb Fruit Wine

White “zin-like” nose, more musky palate, delicate and drying finish. Food Pairing: A light salad with fruit. Reason for pairing: A sweeter wine that goes perfectly with light, California style salads.

5. Bumbleberry Fruit Wine (strawberry, raspberry, saskatoon berry)

Off-dry, more fruity pie flavour, soft but fresh finish. Food Pairing: Great with easy eating, flavorful meals such as pizza. The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

Country Lane Mall, Strathmore

Open 7 Days a Week from 8am-10pm • Brunch Every Sunday from 10am-2pm & Buffet 4pm-9pm Reason for pairing: Smoked flavours and herbs on the pizza will increase the complexity of the wine.

6. Strawberry Dessert Wine

More intense strawberry nose, apricot, rich palate, golden. Food Pairing: Apricot based desserts. Reason for pairing: The rich, almost floral flavours will go well with this wine that is reminiscent of a Vidal late-harvest wine.

7. Wild Black Cherry Dessert Wine Musky, ripe stewed fruit, good acid balance finish. Food Pairing: Crème Brule. Reason for pairing: The acid balance will go perfectly with a rich, creamy dessert.

8. Saskatoon Berry Dessert Wine

Musky, foxy, stewed fruit, canned fruit, some brown sugar, exotic nose. Food Pairing: Apples, Cheese and Walnut based foods. Reason for pairing: This port-style wine will go well with the nut flavours and the almost musky flavours of the cheese. The wine is also rich enough to cut through any crisp apple flavours.

9. Raspberry Dessert Wine

Rich, decadent, goes with chocolate, alcohol finish can cut through the chocolate, pure raspberry nose. Food Pairing: Almost anything with chocolate. Reason for pairing: The raspberry dessert wine is one of the few wines that will pair well with chocolate. A perfect match of intense flavours.

10. Black Currant Dessert Wine

Candy pallet, lively, rich, inviting, pure black currant. Food Pairing: I recommend mixing it with a sparkling wine and enjoying it on its own. Reason for pairing: Black Currant liqueurs and Champagne are a famous pairing world-wide, known traditionally as a “Kir Royale”.

Contentment Is An Inside Job

I have this personality trait that has been one of my downfalls my whole life. I have always been in a hurry. I am not referring to hurrying to an appointment, though tardiness is a bad habit of mine. Rather, I mean in a hurry to get to somewhere else in my life. In a hurry to get to the next step, the next day, the next adventure. For much of my life, I was never truly content. This is a trait that, to this very day, I must be aware of in myself. Here are some of the thoughts and feelings I have: I will be happier once xyz has happened. Things will fall into place once abc is over. Geez, look how green the grass is over there. If only. Someday I will. I can't wait for. Maybe you can relate? Sometimes I am so wrapped up in my head, so focused on the past or worried about the future that I don't even realize I am missing the present. Over the past years of my life, however, I have cultivated a few healthy habits that have helped me to slow down and stay present. The gifts of this have far exceeded the work that it took to create the habits, and I thought that this month (in honour of the Beauty issue) that I would share some of them with you. There are no right or wrong way to do these things, and each of them are simple to do every day. Perhaps you are doing them already? Then I encourage you to spread the good news! We CAN be happier, healthier, more beautiful, content and joyful – and the power is ours alone.

1. Create a stillness practice.

A stillness practice was not something that I thought I could do. When I was a kid, I probably would have been diagnosed as ADD, if that term was in existence at the time. My mind and emotions have always been overwhelming in noise and intensity. Meditation did not come easy for me. In fact, it still doesn't, though it is now a place of solace when once it was a study in twitching. This is my favourite: Take a breath, bringing a full inhalation into the body. Pause for a moment. Release the breathe smoothly and completely. Pause for a moment. Repeat. Feel your body. Relax. Notice your thoughts as they arise, but focus upon the flow of your breath. By practising stilling the mind, we start to notice the mind and emotions and its many machinations. In that we are released from being ruled by it.

2. Practice being mindful.

Mindfulness can be practised all the time. When we are aware of the nature of the mind (meditation is hugely helpful here) we can notice when we are NOT present. If we are thinking about the past, the future, our responses within a conversation, even watching TV while we are eating a meal we are depriving ourselves of the most beautiful place

34 •

thenewsyneighbour.com

in the world – NOW. Life, as it is happening, is full of textures, layers, fleeting moments of perfection. The practice is simple – be present as much as you can remember to be. Try this exercise: Choose a piece of food. First look at it – notice the colour, shape, all its visual cues. Then feel it – is it smooth, bumpy, furry, does it feel different on different areas? Now smell it – close your eyes and breathe deep. Finally, after using all these other senses, take one bite – but don't chew it yet. Feel it on your tongue, move it around, notice the saliva being generated, how it feels in your mouth. As you chew, do so slowly and many times before swallowing, and notice the flavours and textures emerging and changing. Spend a moment in gratitude for the nourishment that it is giving you. By practicing mindfulness we are able to find the most remarkable contentment in even our most mundane of activities. In this practice we find our life, our relationships, our experiences enriched beyond measure.

3. Do the things that fill your cup.

Do you love hiking in nature? Reading? Creating art, doing photography? Do you love to play cards with your kids or ride your bike 60km/hr down the highway? Do you love to watch the sun set and listen to the frogs croak in the twilight? Taking a yoga class? Whatever it is that you are drawn to, do it. Unapologetically and without fail, make these activities happen every day for yourself if you can. Do them with friends or do them by yourself. Don't wait for anyone, and don’t apologize for the time it takes. It is often easy to do these things when we have plenty of time and energy. But when times are hectic and we are feeling mentally and emotionally drained, these practices will keep us sane and grounded. Try this: What are you passionate about? Nurture that with a mindful quiet mind and a determined heart. I used to look for happiness outside of myself. I thought I might find it tomorrow, or when things fell into place. I wished for the right person to come along make me feel happy, the right job, more money, more luck... But by practising these things, I have learned something very important. In learning to be present (more), in recognizing my thoughts as being separate from ME, in spending time doing the things I love – joy and contentment happen RIGHT NOW. I have learned that it is in moments where beauty exists. If I still my busy mind and be HERE, I get to witness this beauty. I have also learned that by practising these things, I get to have this joy and contentment happen more every day. Namaste, Becky

Dr. Ashkan Hamzehi JasonofPan Why is DDS a Frog• aDr. symbol trueDDS love? Dr. Junsoo Kim DDS • Dr. Arzy Kafrouny DDS And how does a frog become a prince? It’s been said that you have to kiss a lot of frogs to find your prince, on that I do agree! The meaning of this phrase is that you can’t judge something by the way it looks; your prince or princess charming may look average, but has a heart that bears an overflowing and unending abundance of riches! You will have to take time and look closely enough to see the inner beauty of what they have to offer! In this way, the inner beauty far outshines the outer beauty that can fade if outer beauty is not in touch with the realm of the heart. Alas, the frog becomes a prince when someone worthy takes the time to see you for what is within, for who you really are. Have you ever noticed how when you get to know someone they become more and more attractive because of who they are, and if they are already beautiful on the outside, they become totally enticing, intoxicating you with a knowing glance? That's the magic and essence of real love; it is seeing the treasure that is within. These are the treasured secrets of the meaning and essence of love from the frog. www.universeofsymbolism.com

THE CHRONICLES of Larry and Roger A Pair Of Diabetic Feet Hello, Larry here! Happy May, everyone! Happy Mother’s Day

to all you Moms! It is such an important day, a day to thank you for all your selfless work and love. We just got in from planting a few hours ago. Roger is sore and so he is soaking in the tub; I thought I should journal… We have had some fun out there. It is a little early, for any normal year. But this year seems so different. It feels like time to plant; our neighbours say so too! We will wait to put the bedding out plants in. It could still freeze here; it is Alberta, after all. Today we planted our potatoes, carrots, peas, beans, onion, lettuce, arugula, Swiss chard, and beets. In a few weeks, we can plant our bedding out plants. This will consist of our tomatoes, peppers, squash, pumpkins, cucumbers and zucchinis. We are so very excited about eating our own vegetables from our own garden as we are every year. Our excitement prompted us to look into healthy eating. We found so many recipes on the Canadian Diabetes Association website. Here is one that we thought would suit many in Alberta: Alberta Beef and Garden Potatoes and Asparagus… Yippee! So we tried it, and it is amazing. We can’t wait to try it with our own garden vegetables.

Roasted Beef with Wild Mushroom Sauce

This hearty, yet simple meal bursts with flavour due to the sauce. Makes 16 servings Ingredients • 2½ lb outside round beef roast 1.1 kg • 1½-2 tsp freshly ground black pepper 7-10 mL • 1 oz mixed dried wild mushrooms 30 g • 2 cups low-sodium beef broth 500 mL • 1 cup water 250 mL

We all know growing our own vegetables or buying organic is best for us. Let's take a look at house-milled

flour. It has unbeatable taste and enhanced food value. It contains nutrients such as vitamin a B6, B12, riboflavin, iron and magnesium, along with many more, that all occur naturally; not added. Have you ever heard of a cupcake having that many benefits, along with such amazing taste? Just like a vegetable, after you grind the flour it starts to lose its nutrients. Housemilled flour maintains its unbeatable taste and enhanced food value. The word organic just gets me. I will tell you what the wheat is and you can decide for yourself. The wheat is grown using fertilizer and crop control. It is not sprayed ‘just because.’ My

farmer watches his crop closely and if they find something that may ruin the crop, they try to control it. If it is not controlled, it is then sprayed. However, please consider these labels that say "organic" as they are not truthful. The guidelines for putting that on a package are very low. You need to ask, what kind of fertilizer was used in making this "organic" wheat, because if they did not use fertilizer from a hormone-free cow, then it means it's not actually organic. Also, remember they are making acres of wheat, not just a garden full, meaning they would require TONS of hormone-free manure, and the plausibility of that would be unlikely. Also, if you starve a crop by not giving it the fertilizer it needs, as in manufactured fertilizer containing nutrients, the end result will not contain the nutrients that our wheat contains. So do our packages say organic? No, but they are preservative free and have enhanced food value, which, to me, is more important than organic and less nutrients. I didn't even know this, but the response from my farmer regarding the desiccating is, “For crop dry down, the product we use is for perennial weed control, not dry down. The wheat I sell you has not had dry down or perennial weed control product, as you are getting what we use for seed and some people are not comfortable with the weed control product on their food or seed.” Pre order a kg of house-milked flour. We can customize it to your baking needs. If you are baking bread, a high protein flour will give you the perfect loaf. We use a 13% protein level. It is a hard red wheat locally grown. Please specify the amount of bran you would like to remain in the flour. I suggest removing 50% for the first time until your family is familiar with it. For pastries, a lower protein is best. We use a 10% protein level. This is a mixture of hard red and soft white wheat. We remove all the bran but still leave the middlings in the flour, as this is where some of the nutrients are, as well as in the wheat germ that remains in the flour. An all-purpose flour you purchase in the store is about an 8% protein but without the nutrients. Our all-purpose flour has a 10% protein and our bread flour has a 13% protein. When I say, “That’s crazy”, it’s usually because I haven’t been paying attention or I simply have no idea what else to say. The best way to hang up on someone is in the middle of your own sentence. That way they never suspect you hung up on them! I discovered I scream the same way whether I'm about to be eaten by a shark or if a piece of seaweed touches my foot. I enjoy a glass of wine each night for its health benefits. The other glasses are for my witty comebacks and flawless dance moves.

www.gailschmidt.com Is Langdon ready for the 2 Hour Challenge?

Two hours is not a lot of time when you really think about it. Two hours is about the time it takes to watch a movie, commute to and from work each day, or play half a game of golf. If someone told you that you could make Langdon a better community by giving only two hours of your time, would you do it? Volunteer organizations are the lifeblood of our community. Langdon volunteers protect our homes, beautify our streets, teach our children to be great athletes and citizens, build gathering spaces and playgrounds, support their neighbours in times of crisis, and many other valuable tasks. The Langdon Community Collaborative is challenging YOU to reach out and get involved with one of the many volunteer organizations thriving in this community. Perhaps you can only give two hours for a one-time event. Perhaps you have two hours a month or even two hours a week available. Whether you volunteer once or several times, your time, talents, and passions can be used to strengthen our community and the programs within it. Over the course of 2 issues of The Newsy Neighbour Magazine, we will profile some of the organizations that participate in the Langdon Community Collaborative. Consider connecting with one of our member organizations to find out how you can be involved. If you are a Langdon organization

Langdon Community Garden A Community Growing Together

Mission – To promote the coming together of Langdon’s citizens with a common purpose of nurturing, developing and sustaining a growing space in our community. The Langdon community garden will reflect the area it serves; engaging, educating, building and strengthening the community in a significant way. Vision – To cultivate a community group invested in growing fresh produce for our marginalized citizens who access our local and surrounding food banks. We would hope to empower all of Langdon’s citizens to consider participating in healthier and more socially responsible community activities. The Langdon Community Garden, will be a beautiful space, with winding pathways through perennial beds and fruit trees, raspberry bushes, pumpkin patches and vegetable gardens. We plan to make it a welcoming space for all, having wide walkways, to suit strollers or persons with mobility challenges. Deep plots are essential to make the plots accessible to those of all ages, stages and abilities. The garden will have seating areas where you can rest and admire your garden. We will involve Langdon’s teens in the project, by designating a space for them to learn about gardening, agriculture and local biodiversity, creating our own “Green Teen” subgroup. If you haven’t been out to see what’s happening at the Langdon Community Garden site, you might want to go take a look, because it’s pretty darn awesome. Let’s talk about our garden heroes for a minute. Hero numero uno – Brayden Szakaly (403) 969-1160 from Wild West Land Services and his crew have been amazing. They’re like, “Meh, it’s for the community? We’re there!!” They have the expertise, they’re reliable, professional and have a community minded focus. They’d all look pretty great in a cape too. Just sayin’ Hero number two – James Lang from WoodnEarth Developments (403)990-5082. Another local gent, who got shwangled into helping us out, by his darling wife Jill Beaton. He has been our sounding board, voice of reason, an all around knowledgeable guy, and the fellow that ALWAYS shows up. And he would look fabulous in a leotard I might add. Local Heroes, who jump in when they’re needed. They don’t ask for anything in return. They’re trustworthy, honest, reliable, people, who make the overwhelming, not so overwhelming. Looking for reliable contractors, give them a call.

Taking Care of Your

Dental Health in Your Thirties and Forties

There’s no disputing that life is pretty great throughout your thirties and forties. You’ve hit your career stride, have some extra cash for adventurous holidays and fun nights out, and you’re still feeling fit with no aches or sprains to get you down. So how can there be any negative? All this great living can’t be having a negative effect on your oral health… right? Wrong. During these years, you may be eating out regularly, enjoying a daily latte, engaging in intense physical activity (that has you reaching for a sugary sports drink) and just flopping into bed after a long day. Let’s face it. You’re busy, and often times forget about brushing and flossing your teeth. These years often encompass busy family schedules where eating on the run and helping young members of the family with homework means that parents don’t have the time or energy to devote to their own needs. Why is Oral Health so Important? It’s no secret that we believe great oral health is the corner-stone for optimum systemic health. Our previous blogs have spoken about the inflammatory impact oral bacteria

How to Take Care of Your Teeth During Busy Times No one is going to put their life on hold to take care of their smile; even we know that! But there are some little tips that can keep you on the right track when it comes to taking care of your teeth - without sacrificing family, work and fun time. The first tip is to stay away from hidden (and known) sugars in sports drinks, lattes, iced coffees and energy bars. Though enjoyable, consuming these daily is literally bathing your teeth in sugar – and if you’re jumping into bed without flossing, then you’re headed for trouble. Instead, reach for water or electrolyte powders to restore energy. Think of having some cheese in your work desk; it helps to neutralize the acids in your mouth, which help reduce cavity formation. Also, think about keeping a toothbrush at work – as brushing after lunch will not only be appreciated by your co-workers, but will keep plaque formation under control. As busy as life can be, don’t cancel those important trips to the dentist for a cleaning and exam. This twice yearly appointment enables your dentist to monitor the health of your mouth, which gives you one thing less to worry about! Langdon Dental

Under new ownership! Same great food, brand new atmosphere! Bring your whole family! Free Delivery!

INDIAN CUISINE 134 2 Ave, Strathmore (403) 983-1114

If you’re looking for a little taste of India, we know just the spot! As a New(sy) initiative, the Newsy Neighbour "street team" set out to find some of the best local eateries within and around the Strathmore, Langdon and Chestermere areas. Guess which one we're here to brag about today? TAJ Indian Cuisine! Some of you may recognize the previous restaurant name, "Masala Hub;" that's where you can now find TAJ - the latest and greatest family owned Indian restaurant around. Since its new ownership, TAJ has eliminated the sheesha lounge that used to be a part of the Masala Hub and expanded their sitting area, leaving room for many more patrons. As we walked in, Ravi, the wonderful TAJ owner, welcomed us with a large warmhearted smile and then showed us to our seats. The ambiance was calm and quaint with beautiful authentic decor along the ceiling and walls. Admittedly, I grew up on good ol' steak and potatoes, so Indian cuisine was a new adventure for me. Aleesha and Denise, however - they had been raving about the food for days before our arrival. We asked Ravi to point out some of his personal favourite menu items for us to try; we were going in blind, and loving every minute of it. The first dish that was delivered to our table was one of Aleesha's "to-die-for" items: the Fish Pakora with cilantro sauce on the side. As I mentioned before, I am more of a steak kind of girl and have never really been a fan on fish but this - this dish was my favourite. It did have a bit of a bite to it though, so if you're more on the "non-spicey" side of things, it may not be for you (side note: we all kind of prefer the milder eats, but we also all thoroughly enjoyed this dish. It wasn't an overbearing kind of heat). Next up was the naan and saucy chicken dishes. Being the outrageously daring ladies that we are (ish), we decided to test our pallets with three different kinds of naan bread (garlic, cheese and original) with two different kinds of sauces and dumplings. The cheese naan was my absolute favourite in this naan family; it tasted very similar to the cheesy bread from Boston Pizza: who doesn't love cheesy bread? The garlic naan was covered in fresh and crunchy garlic bits, which was delicious and the original was also a heavenly delight. In fact, even Denise's beautiful "babies" enjoyed the naan. The sauces, Mylanta - they were phenomenal. The coconut chicken curry was sweet and warm with pieces of chicken breast; it worked wonders on both the naan bread and the rice that we had ordered. The butter chicken seemed to be the table favourite, however. It was boneless chicken breasts, but was covered in a rich and creamy tomato sauce with butter, cream and a blend of spices. Unsurprisingly, it was the first dish to be demolished. In fact, Denise said that it was so incredible that she would certainly (and undoubtedly) drink the entire bowl on its own. The malai kofta dumplings were different than any dumplings we had had before. They were covered in a rich creamy sauce and filled with homemade cottage cheese and vegetables. Although they were very tasty, they may not be this Indian cuisine rookie's first pick. The malai tikka chicken though, holy moly! That was my perfect dish.

Being that I'm an Albertan with very little sense of foodie adventure, this quickly became my top pick. It came out in a smoking hot skewer with what I assume was salt and pepper and was garnished with crispy, fried cabbage. It was like a delicious little stir fry, without the noodles. And, because we don't care much about our pant sizes, we decided to also indulge in a wee bit of dessert. We ordered ourselves the Indian frozen ice cream (kulfi) and the cream caramel. The ice cream was definitely different than our traditional North American ice cream, but it was delicious just the same. We asked Ravi how the ice cream was made and he said that it was strictly milk and sugar that had been frozen in a fancy little concoction (we can say it's fancy because he showed us) and then served straight from the freezer. The caramel treat was, however, hands down, by far, the most sought-after dish on the table. The children, Aleesha, Denise and I practically fought tooth and nail for this home-made delicacy. It tasted very similar to crème brulee and was topped with a savoury caramel sauce and whipped cream. As it turns out, it was actually created solely by the owner himself. Added perks (aside from the deliciousness and service, of course): For anyone with peanut allergies, TAJ is a great place to go, sit, indulge and not stress about the dangers of the nut, as they are a peanut free outlet. Don't have time to head in and enjoy? No problem here - they now deliver (check out their menu online)! And unlike their predecessors, TAJ Indian Cuisine is now fully licensed with a variety of alcoholic beverages to choose from (of course, they are still family-driven). Also, for those of you who have a spicy/mild preference, the chef is more than happy to accommodate to satisfy your taste buds. All-in-all, TAJ Indian Cuisine was an absolutely wonderful establishment with delicious food, spectacular service and authentic decor. Thank you for having us in Ravi and staff; we will definitely be coming back again in the future! Nicole MH

Big Summer for Golf in Southern Alberta! If you love golf, you are going to have a summer to remember. Not only because our local courses are in fantastic shape after a mild winter, but because we are going to get to watch some of the biggest names in the sport. What a score last month for the Shaw Charity Classic! 66 year old golf legend Tom Watson has confirmed he will tee it up in Calgary at the 4th annual event over the September long weekend. The 8 time major champion recently played his last competitive round at the Masters in Augusta, Georgia. He almost made the cut, proving he still has the game. So why does a player with 71 professional wins on his resume want to tee it up in Calgary on the Champions Tour? “Simply, I am a golfer,” he smiles. “I enjoy playing competitive golf and when I’m competitive and have a chance to win, that fills me up and that’s why I do it.” You have to love the drive, passion and desire and you can also understand why the best player on the planet in the late 70ies has a degree in psychology from Stanford University. The 5 time Open champion is also excited to play the Canyon Meadows layout. “I have heard nothing but good things." says Watson. "Especially the fan support! We love to play in front of a lot of people and that is what happens there. The players really like the golf course, Freddie Couples has had nothing but good things to say. They have had 3 great champions, so it proves itself. The best players seem to win there.” Another incentive for Watson is his passion for the west. “The one thing I’ve missed out on my bucket list, and my wife’s

bucket list, is the Calgary Stampede,” he said. “We’re both into horses and rodeo and we understand it’s a can’t-miss event and one of these years we’ll make it up there.” Unfortunately for Watson, the Shaw Charity Classic doesn't line up with the Calgary Stampede. This year's event goes back to its original date, falling on the Labour Day weekend. In three short years, the Shaw Charity Classic has established itself as one of the premier stops on the 36 year old Champions Tour. Last year setting a record raising almost 4 million dollars for children's charities. It will be tough to match those numbers in a down economy, but the addition of the former Ryder Cup captain has given organizers a huge lift. The Charity Classic will likely get another boost as fan favourite John Daly, who celebrated his 50th birthday last month. Organizers are hoping he will also put YYC on his calendar. "I think everybody will recognize a lot of these names that are coming up," said tournament director Sean Van Kesteren. "I think our field this year will probably be the strongest we've had yet. Based on what we know now and some early commitments, I think everybody is going to be pretty excited to see some new faces but also some familiar faces that seem to be here every year." The week before the champions arrive in Calgary, the current stars of the LPGA tour will be in Southern Alberta. The 2016 Canadian Pacific Women's Open will be held at Priddis Greens from August 22 - 28. Priddis last hosted this event in 2009. 18 year old Canadian Brooke Henderson will be the star of the show. Henderson has been a model of consistency in her first full season with 7 top ten finishes. She has already jumped to 7th in the world rankings and the teen phenom doesn't turn 19 until September. "We had 96 of the top 100 players in the world last year and we're expecting the same this year," said CP tournament director Brent McLauglin. "I've talked to all these top players who are going to be competing for their countries in Rio and every single conversation I've had is that this is a no-brainer. This is a huge event on their schedule." Yes golf fans, let's not forget golf returns to the Olympics this summer. A 72 hole stroke play tournament will be contested in Brazil. It has been 112 years since golf was part of the Olympic format. While the Olympics are being contested in Rio, the future stars of the game will be teeing it up in Calgary for the ATB Financial Golf Classic on the McKenzie Tour (formerly the PGA Tour Canada). A field of 156 players from nearly 20 countries will be on the Talons course at Country Hills for the $175,000 tournament with the hopes of gaining position on the season-long Order of Merit, where the season-ending money leader will earn exempt status on the Web.com Tour, part of the path to the PGA TOUR, for 2017. 2016 marks the tenth year of the ATB Financial Classic, and year three of an agreement between ATB Financial and The Mackenzie Tour that will keep in the tournament in Calgary through 2017.

While the McKenzie Tour may not get the crowds or the exposure of the Champions Tour or the LPGA, it is (in my opinion) the best spectator opportunity as you get up close and personal with some of the best young players in the game. Enjoy the golf season as it will be a summer to remember! About Jock Wilson: Jock has been involved in the Calgary sport media scene for over 30 years. Need a Tow?

A

A couple of years ago, I was driving in downtown Calgary when my vehicle started shaking. It turns out my front

right wheel was wobbling and very close to falling off completely. I had the kids in the back of the car, and I was stranded in the downtown core. I called Wheatland Towing and Dennis drove all the way to where I was, fixed my tire, and sent me on my way. Another time, Aleesha and her husband Todd went on vacation. When they came home, their vehicle was completely dead – you couldn’t even boost it. Aleesha called Wheatland Towing and Dennis drove all the way to the airport to tow their vehicle back to Strathmore. This is the kind of person Dennis Winters is – he treats his customers like family. Wheatland Towing began on October 1, 2010 with the sole intention of making a difference and treating customers the way they should be treated. Having worked for people most of his life, Dennis was tired of having to deal with the negative side of poor customer service. His personality meshed with many “money-first” businesses, and he wanted to be his own boss and treat customers the way a customer wants to be treated – namely, like family. He set out to create Wheatland Towing, servicing all of Wheatland County, Drumheller (with AMA), Strathmore, Langdon, and, in the

case of both myself and Aleesha, virtually anywhere a customer requires them to go. Dennis loves people, is a gentleman, is very honest, and strives to do a job well done. He knows that vehicles are not only expensive, but often hold a special place in the owners’ hearts – and he will treat your vehicle like it’s his own. While many towing companies charge by the hour, Dennis finds that charging by the call and mileage keeps his prices lower than the competition and easier to manage. Mind you, he’s not in this just for the money – his goal is to feel successful doing whatever he can to help people in their time of need. I sat down for lunch with his wife Darylene and my 2-year old son Lucas, and she sang his praises like a newlywed. “He works so hard every single day,” she said. “Then comes home and is such a great grandpa to our 6 grandchildren!” And what does grandpa love to do when he’s not helping stranded Newsy Neighbour employees? Wheatland Towing has a flat deck truck, they’re available 24/7, and they specialize in towing/winching, recovery, battery boosting, fuel delivery, lock-out services, tire change services, and they will recycle your unused vehicle for free! Why is shopping a good deed?

You are creating more good jobs: Small local businesses are the largest employer nationally and in our community, providing the most jobs to residents. You are investing in your community: Local businesses are owned by people who live in this community, they are less likely to leave the community, and are more invested in the community’s future. You are encouraging local prosperity: A growing body of economic research shows that in an increasingly homogenized world, entrepreneurs and skilled workers are more likely to invest and settle in communities that preserve their one-of-a-kind businesses and distinctive character. You are helping to keep our community unique: Where we shop, where we eat and have fun -- all of it makes our community home. Our one-of-a-kind businesses are an integral part of the distinctive character of out town. Our tourism businesses also benefit.

A Letter From Strathmore Mayor, Mike Ell

transit system to our community in the near future. The Newsy Neighbour recently celebrated their 100th issue and sponsored a Best in Business Awards night that was very well attended by our business community. In the past year, we have seen 38 new businesses open their doors. We have 2 shoe stores, a new market & deli, a new sports equipment store, a new owner at the jewellery store and the old Royal Bank building has been occupied. These are a few of the happenings in the downtown. PJ’s Appliances moved out and Real Deals moved in – and it’s become a town treasure. On the west side of town, we have a new liquidation store. A Dodge Dealership will be opening soon. There is talk of a new smaller mall on the west side of town. On the east side, Co-op has a new building, Peavey Mart has opened and it is expected Mark’s Work Warehouse will be moving to a new building in a mall north of Peavey Mart and Co-op. Nearby, a new medical clinic with doctors has opened. Golden Hills School Division is working to have a new K to 9 School with an attached recreation facility opened for the fall of 2017 on the east side of town. 70 single family homes and 14 multi-family homes have been built in the past year. Edgefield has seen 14 homes occupied. This is only a partial list. There are many good things happening in our community. When you support your District Chamber of Commerce, your community will be even more successful. I believe a strong Chamber of Commerce makes a strong business community and a strong business community makes a strong Chamber of Commerce. Congratulations on a successful year and Town Council wishes you even more success in the coming year.

It is my pleasure to bring greetings on behalf of Strathmore Town Council. I also want to express our support of the Strathmore and District Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber, with your support, has a positive future. We hear of the negatives in our economy on daily basis right now. I would like to share with you some positives. One of our citizens explained our community to me this way. The County; Rockyford, Hussar, Standard and Strathmore, all have an agricultural-based economy. Agriculture is our strongest economic driver. The oil industry is the cream on the top. The cream right now has disappeared, but we know it will return. We will need to support our people that have been directly affected by this downturn. Our community has, and is, taking advantage of our agricultural base. Strathmore has seen strong growth and there are positive numbers to share with you. Allow me to update you on some of the activity in our community. Recently, the Ag. Society invited me to the WPCA Tarp Auction in Calgary. Numbers were lighter this year, but I saw our community come together to support our Strathmore Stampede. The Canadian Rockies International Rodeo and Music Festival, with headliner Terri Clark, will be here during the Canada Day weekend. Tourism Alberta, Community Futures Wild Rose, Canadian Badlands Tourism and Calgary Regional Partnership are working on increasing our tourism reach. Calgary Regional Partnership is working to bring a regional

A teenager from a small town in Southern Alberta has just had the most important audition of her budding musical career, and it could land her on one of the most-watched music reality TV shows of all time. Samm Smith, 15, was one of the 200 hopefuls and the only Canadian invited to the final round of auditions for season 10 of NBC's hit series The Voice. "I can't even express to you how much work went [into this], not only from me, but from my family," Smith told CBC News shortly after the audition in Los Angeles. "I practice every day, and they had the pleasure of hearing me for five hours every day for the past seven months or so. Lucky them," she joked. If Smith makes it through, she'll get the chance to sing to the chair-backs of four of the most influential music icons in Hollywood: Adam Levine, Christina Aguilera, Pharrell Williams and Blake Shelton. Her repertoire for the auditions included original renditions of Ariana Grande's “Almost is Never Enough,” Alicia Keys' “If I Ain't Got You” and Al Green's, “Let's Stay Together.” We are SO excited to have Samm Smith performing at the 2nd Annual Get to Know Your Festival!! You can listen to Samm Smith by visiting The Newsy Neighbour website at www.thenewsyneighbour.com Courtesy of CBC News: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/ the-voice-audition-samm-smith-okotoks-1.3451103

Jaydee Bixby Jaydee Bixby is a Canadian country musician who was the runner-up on the fifth season of Canadian Idol. In 2008, he signed with Her Royal Majesty's Records and went on to release his debut album Cowboys and Cadillacs. Raised in a home of dedicated musicians, it’s Bixby’s family that initially encouraged him to participate in local competitions as a young boy and to follow his dream of becoming a recording artist. The dream led 17 year-old Bixby to grab life by the horns and try his hand at the discerning Canadian Idol where he would eventually become the fifth season’s runner-up, gaining millions of adoring fans in the process thanks to both his impeccable voice and hip-swaggering Presley-esque stage manner that left more than a few ladies swooning. Even Idol guest star Paul Anka was compelled to endorse Bixby, noting that he “has the type of talent that will keep him around for decades to come.” After the success of Canadian Idol, Bixby refused to rest on his laurels. The determined and enthusiastic vocalist utilized that same work ethic he applied to Canadian Idol to realize another dream: releasing his debut album Cowboys and Cadillacs. Bixby celebrates his inaugural step into a lifetime career of recording and touring with the release. Recorded at Vancouver’s Mushroom Studios, Cowboys and Cadillacs finds the sure-footed teen intensifying and broadening the same velvety voice that prompted throngs of Canadians to instantly adore him. Working with renowned producers Bill Buckingham (Rita McNeil, Amber Nicholson and the Cuzeros) and John Webster (Bon Jovi, Aerosmith), Cowboys and Cadillacs intertwines Bixby’s inherent down home, twangy roots with a rock edge to create enduring country anthems including the infectious lead single “Old Fashioned Girl,” in which Bixby relates his dream partner to be a little bit like mom and a little bit like Minnie Pearl: a good, clean, wholesome girl. We are SO proud to have Jaydee Bixby performing at The 2nd Annual Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival!! You can find the music video to "Old Fashioned Girl" on The Newsy Neighbour Website. www.thenewsyneighbour.com Resource: www.maplemusic.com

What happened in April

Hope Bridges is a local non-profit organization that uses the universal language of the arts to connect adults in an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere where everyone belongs. For more information, see www.hopebridges.ca or call 403 983 3640.

People Need People

(by Wanda Reinholdt & Patricia Timmermans)

We did it -- in fact we kicked it out of the park!

On April 16, with your generous support, the Hope Bridges Society exceeded a fundraising goal of $10,000 at the Art & Wine Auction. It was our third annual Art Auction and setting such a high goal felt slightly risky. But a community came together and at the end of the day, it felt like nothing less than a miracle! How did it happen? Artists and artisans donated art, wine and a beautiful variety of artistic creations. Volunteers spent countless hours planning, coordinating and setting up on the big day. Businesses and individuals purchased raffle tickets, placed silent bids and participated enthusiastically in live auction bidding! Thanks to our community! Hope Bridges could not have done this without all of you and we extend the most heartfelt Thank You! On that day we experienced a memorable celebration of community and art. We need each other. In ‘The Village Effect’, author Susan Pinker writes about the positive effects of belonging to a community. Individuals thrive and are healthier emotionally, physically and socially when surrounded by others. The bottom line is that people need people and science proves it! When we think about how we came together for the auction and how Hope Bridges works daily to create a place where all may belong, create and connect, I wonder what we could do if we worked together like this daily and how much more could we accomplish? In the spirit of inclusivity, we at Hope Bridges are seeing daily that setting goals that may at first seem lofty, are attainable -- and quite possibly kicked out of the park!

Created by Johanna Jackins & the 2012- 2013 Upcycling Workshop Participants. (Janine R, Rhonda G, Elizabeth E, Katy W, Sheila M, Rachel K, Sheila K, Tamara C, Rene B, Wanda R) Inspiration: “Flight” was inspired by samples of plastic card murals online and is to lift us to new creative heights. Process: Recycled plastic cards and an old door (for the frame) were used to make this piece. Supplies cost less than $50.00. The process took seventy hours. The process included drawing the colour graph, gathering the plastic cards (donated by many individuals and 8 local businesses), organizing them using a colour graph, gluing the cards into place on the graph and finishing with a lacquer. It was made at the Hope Bridges Studio. This community project was started in October 2012 and completed in July 2013. It is part of the Hope Bridges traveling gallery, sold each year and has hung for a year at the Chinook Credit Union and also the Wheatland County Office. The Newsy Neighbour attended the auction and is now the proud owner of "Flight". We are so excited to share this incredible artwork with the community!

Over $2200 was raised and donated. We had an absolute blast. A second fundraiser will be held while this magazine is at the printer. On April 30th, we are hoping to raise another $2200. April Showers Bring May… …garage sales!

A

Actually, at this point in April, the showers have been basically non-existent. Which I’ve effectively cursed by writing that so if, by the time you read this, you are up to your armpits in mud, well… a thousand pardons for uttering/typing that before the end of the month. Last May I decided all I wanted for Mother’s Day is a decluttering of my basement, closets and house in general. Actually, what I REALLY wanted was someone else in my household to do this for me, but one must be realistic about their Mother’s Day demands. Gifts notwithstanding, with this lofty goal in mind, I decided what better time to garage sale than the annual Parade of Garage sales. The concept of having a garage sale actually hit around Christmas so I’d spent most of the winter going through dusty boxes and cluttered closets in search of saleable treasures. It’s amazing how much easier it is to get rid of stuff you have absolutely no use for when it’s going to a good home rather than the garbage. Theoretically going to a good home, anyhow. Not being the owner of a garage at my current house, I convinced my garage-owning friend that joining the Parade of Garage Sales would be an excellent idea. I, along with my boxes of stuff, would of course attend,

60 •

resulting in double the amount of treasure in her garage to sell. This would, in turn, attract a large number of customers to buy all of our treasures. At the end of the day, we would be able to relax in her empty garage and plan what we’d do with our new-found wealth; then I’d have the pleasure of going home to my tidy house to relax. My friend, being rather full of clutter herself, was easy to convince. The week before our epic sale-to-end-all-sales I borrowed my son’s truck and made numerous trips to my friend’s house with boxes of clutter, aka treasure. It was at that point that I discovered I have far too many books and one should be careful just how large a box is used to pack said books. I cheered myself by picturing my loot-to-be and remembering people pay money for classes with this type of resistance/cardio exercise. Extra bonus! The night before the sale we agreed to meet in her garage and set up, which actually translated into “cleaning her garage” followed by “moving stuff from one table to the next”. This was a result of the unhappy discovery that we both had enough stuff to fill all the tables on our own and we were sadly lacking table space. After a few snarks about moving MY stuff, which was already artfully displayed, we agreed that she could have the left side tables and I would take the right side ones. We also consoled ourselves that we would have more space in the morning when we could shift some of the big items to be equally artfully displayed on the driveway. After a few hours of cleaning, unpacking, arranging, general snarking and pricing we decided, exhausted, to call it a night and get an early start to finish our pricing. The “garage sale to end all garage sales” was turning out to be a ridiculous amount of work but we figured the payout would make it worth it. Saturday translated into a long, exhausting day with the following “learnings”: a) People do not respect the 9 am start time b) People are cheap c) People would not recognize treasure if it walked up and slapped them d) People do not understand the concept of “artful displays” and the value it adds e) Packing unsold crap… uh... treasure… is as much work as moving, unpacking and pricing the same treasure. f) The average rate of pay, by hour, for holding a garage sale is approximately .30 cents g) Charities, such as Women In Need, are a great place to send good quality household items that still have life and shouldn’t be headed for the landfill. They won’t make you rich but neither will a garage sale. And they will take your good quality clutter off your hands. No more garage sales for me!! But… if you have some treasure and some time, I hear Langdon has one in early May. And Chestermere has one the next weekend. Then there’s Strathmore’s in June… and I kind of missed my decorative Christmas baking platter this year… anyone have one of those??

Celebrating Moms

“Everybody wants to save the Earth; nobody wants to help Mom do the dishes.” ~ P.J. O’Rourke

Ah, Mother’s Day. This is a day whose roots can be traced to the ancient Greeks and Romans who honoured the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele with festivals and celebrations. Hmmm… mother Goddesses, you say? Our modern day Mother’s Day, however, is more closely related to the early European Christian festival known as “Mothering Sunday” when people would return once a year to their ‘mother church’, a practice that over the years introduced children giving gifts to their mothers. When my four children were in elementary school, I would look forward to the hand-made cards and crafty gifts made in school. With great anticipation, they would show up hiding their ‘present’ behind their backs and with big smiles on their faces as they wished me a Happy Mother’s Day and proudly gave me their special gifts. As they grew older, these were replaced with sentimental store-bought cards, lengthy telephone calls and beautiful flower arrangements. Although the gifts may have changed, their thoughtfulness continues to bring up the same feelings that the crooked clay cups and colourfully-painted Popsicle stick picture frames brought so many years ago… feelings of being loved and appreciated, and being proud of the young adults my children have become. Over the past 26 years of being a mother, I have often admitted to not being a perfect mom. I’ve said my share of things that would have been better off not being said, of reacting instead of understanding, of missing opportunities to just ‘be’ with my children. But as Jill Churchill said, “There’s no way to be a perfect mother and a million ways to be a good one” and I’ve also stayed up all night supporting them through a life crisis, taught them to be resilient and true to who they are, and respected their opinions even when they differed from my own. While I would do some things differently if I could do it again with

the things I know now, I know that I did the best I could. I also know my mom (and dad) were not perfect parents but did their best. About five years ago, I shared some stories with my mom about how I felt growing up within our family. These were not happy memories. In return, she shared a secret. She told me that she didn’t realize how important it was to hug your children and tell them that you loved them until she saw me doing these things with my own children and witnessed the closeness it created. She told me she didn’t know how to have meaningful conversations with me or how to reach out when she saw me in pain because she never experienced anyone doing these things for her when she was a child. In that one conversation, both our perspectives changed and our relationship profoundly changed. My mom and I now share a more meaningful relationship and we see a wisdom in each other that we were once closed to. We both have a greater understanding and acceptance of our experiences and of ourselves. We respect the perfect imperfection of who we are. This amazing gift only happened because we shared our stories. As mothers and as human beings, we are not perfect. We have had achievements and failures. We have proud moments and ones we would like to forget. We have laughed and we have cried. By sharing our stories, we can create deeper connections to others and to ourselves. We inspire. We heal. We understand. We support. We love. And isn’t that what being a mom is all about? Women Talk celebrates all mothers with a special Mother-Daughter open mic meeting. Come out with your mother or daughter and share your story. It is a story we are all waiting to share in with you. “Being a mother is an attitude, not a biological relation.” ~ Robert A. I' ve been cooking for about 40 years, since I was 10. I am

fortunate to have a mom who was very passionate about the meals she prepared for the family and I've become inspired by her mouth-watering dishes. I've always included my girls in the kitchen and boy, can they whip up dinner, if needed! Now speaking of boys... I feel like they are not taught enough about the importance of cooking for themselves. Women are cooking less and less in the home now due to working or just not having a passion for it on a daily basis, and that’s ok! Let’s teach our kids to cook and have a few less meals to prepare! I've also noticed how measuring ingredients has helped my son Alex understand some basic math, such as what 120 ml or a half a cup of something looks like, or 450 grams equals a pound of butter. I still use and find the imperial system easier for myself, but we are a metric country so I do encourage you to show both measurements when teaching. He also enjoys the “pinch” of salt or pepper which is about 2 ml. I recommend starting with simple dishes with six or less ingredients. Last month’s spaghetti tacos were four ingredients and I think you'll find this week’s recipe for Pita Pizza easy, light, delicious and kid friendly!

(Hint: if the child is grating cheese, cut a piece off the cheese block in the amount you will use and use a sandwich bag to hold the cheese while grating, this will help in preventing grating the fingers). MURPHY’S LAW – KIDS

• You have all heard of Murphy’s Law (“If anything can go wrong, it will”) here are a few more you may not have heard of: • You can fool all of the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time, but you can’t fool MOM. • When you need to carry a child, they will want to walk. • When you want them to walk, they will want to be carried. • When you bring the stroller, they will want to walk. • When you forget the stroller, they will want to ride. • The intensity of the tantrum is directly proportional to the amount of people around to witness. • The more preparation time for the meal, the less likely a child is to eat it. • As soon as the snow suit (and all of the paraphernalia that accompanies) is on the child, said child will have to use the bathroom. • As soon as the child is in the car and the car has left the driveway, the child will have to use the bathroom. • The clothes/shoes you bought last week for your child will not fit this week or will not be “cool” enough for this week. • The amount of sound from the other room is inversely proportional to the amount of trouble the child is getting into. • The more you paid for the car seat, the more the child will hate it. • When you are in a hurry the child will dawdle. • A child’s favourite one day is never a favourite the next day (especially food). What Constitutes An Emergency For My Pet?

It’s Riding Season! How’s Your Horsepower?

We also suggest : Pre-Purchase Exams - An extensive examination is performed from head to toe on your prospective horse. Lameness Exams - Lameness issues; assess the horse through trotting, lunging and flexion tests; assess hooves and perform further diagnostics. Teeth Float and Dental Care - Ensure ideal performance and comfort for your horse.

Sunny days are here and the family is more active outside. What happens when your dog encounters a coyote? Or your cat gets into a fight with another neighbourhood cat? How do you know when a situation is critical enough to find a veterinarian immediately? Anything is worth at least a call if you're not sure what's wrong, but some things require urgent attention. The following constitute true emergencies: • Seizure, fainting or collapse. • Eye injury, no matter how mild. • Vomiting or diarrhea -- anything more than two or three times within an hour, or if the vomit or diarrhea contains frank blood. • Allergic reactions, such as swelling around the face, or hives, most easily seen on the belly. • Any suspected poisoning, including antifreeze, rodent or snail bait, and human medication. Cats are especially sensitive to insecticides (such as flea-control medication for dogs) or any petroleum-based product. • Snake or venomous spider bites. • Thermal stress -- from being either too cold or too hot -- even if the pet seems to have recovered. The internal story could be quite different. • Any wound or laceration that's open and bleeding, or any animal bite. • Trauma, such as being hit by a car, even if the pet seems fine. Again, the situation could be quite different on the inside. • Any respiratory problem that involves trouble breathing or near drowning. • Straining to urinate or defecate. • Although some other problems aren't life threatening, they may be causing your pet pain and should be taken care of without delay. Signs of pain include panting, laboured breathing, increased body temperature, lethargy, restlessness, crying out, aggression and loss of appetite. Some pets seek company when suffering, while others will withdraw. When in doubt, err on the side of caution, always. Better to be dead wrong about a minor medical problem than to have a pet who's dead because you guessed wrong about a major one. Call your local veterinary clinic before you need help and ask what arrangements the staff suggests for emergency or after-hours care. If your veterinarian refers clients to an emergency clinic after regular business hours, be sure you know which clinic, what the phone number is and how to get there. Most importantly, do not self-medicate your pet. Household pain medications can be lethal for your cats and dogs and may interfere with the care of your pet once seen by the veterinarian. If your animal has suffered an emergency, provide it with comfort and warmth and call your veterinarian immediately for further instructions.

An annual exam is recommended to maintain a healthy baseline for your equine partner regardless of your level of sport. A complete exam assesses overall health, parasite load, teeth and structure.

Happiness

“Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.” Mahatma Gandhi

W

When I saw Carla Lomenda come down the stairs of her home in Langdon, I instantly felt like I was visiting an old friend rather than someone I was just meeting in person for the first time. Mind you, we’ve been working together via email for almost 2 years! But the energy she had, we started speaking like we’ve hung out regularly for years. From the moment we sat down with our teas and listened to our 5 kids (between the 2 of us!) screaming and playing, I felt at ease. Carla’s demeanor was relaxing and encouraging – I felt like no matter what, the next hour would be wonderful. And I was right. Her story was much like mine: corporate career, trying to balance work and home life, and unhappy with spending more time at the office than at home with our children. She needed a change from her high-paying engineering job, and fate had a plan of its own.

Denise: When did you get your ‘a-ha moment’ and realize the corporate world wasn’t for you?

Carla: In 2010, I was working for a large power company in down-

town Calgary, and my boss and I did not really get along, which was really hard for me since I strive to get along with everyone. We had very different ideas of how an office should be run; he was more about the output, and I was more about the internal – the people. We did not mesh well, and it made coming into the office every day, leaving my kids with a day home, very difficult. I was essentially paying someone to raise my children while I went to a job I was very unhappy at. So I began meeting with HR every month. We worked on my strengths; strengths are what fill you up, make you happy. We also

66 •

worked on my weaknesses; things I’m good at, but don’t fill me up or make me feel accomplished. We also began working on listening to my “inner voice” – something I had never done before. While meeting with HR, I realized that I really enjoyed my monthly HR meetings more than the rest of the month in the office, so I began searching for ‘coaching’ classes online. I found one for that upcoming weekend, but it was quite expensive. So I decided to sit on it, and really think about it. I used to work with this girl a few years back who moved to another province, and she and I really ‘got’ each other and while I was considering this coaching class, I thought to myself, “I really wish I could discuss everything with Jenn.” Then – no word of a lie – I turned around and there was Jenn. She had come to Calgary for a meeting, and decided to stop by to say hi to everyone. So we went for coffee, and I told her everything and she was very encouraging. So I signed up for the course that night, but I was still worried about how I was going to pay for it. After the first coach training class, I just knew I was in the right place. I knew I had a bigger game to play in the world and one month later I got another confirmation from the universe. That Thursday, one day before the second set of classes was to begin, I arrived at work and just knew I was going to be laid off that day. And, sure enough, I was right. Always trust your gut. But the package and assistance I received helped to bridge the gap between being unemployed and deciding on whether to find work or start a business – it was like the universe was pushing me in this direction. The very next day, I was in this coaching class, training and learning about negative self-talk and about your future self – where you want to be. There were so many positive people around me; I felt like I had found my calling.

Denise: So what does a coach really do? Carla: A coach is about bringing your work to life, and helping

your life work. I help you find the answers you’re looking for. And I work with people so they don’t make the same mistakes I’ve made. Here’s an example. When your child is sick, a mom tends to just The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

know what to do. You give your kid medicine, you give them a cool bath, you lay in bed awake all night watching them, and you’ll take them to the doctor. But when you’re sick, you don’t do anything for yourself! Then someone will recommend what to do and you realize you knew all along what you really needed to do. That’s what coaching is like – you know all along how to make your business succeed, and coaching helps you find these answers that are within you. I’m not the expert in your life – you are – but I help you stand in your expert status of you and your life. I help you find clarity so you can make quicker and better decisions in your life and business. When you have clarity, everything is easier. I help you stand in your confidence and have better relationships.

Denise: What kinds of people do you work with? Carla: I prefer working with transitioning entrepreneurs or those

who want to bring their business to the next level. It’s what I’m passionate about.

Denise: So what does a session look like with you? Carla: Each package is different to suite every individual per-

son. No two business owners are the same. To start, there’s a 1 hour preliminary session. We determine how much you want to invest financially and internally into your business. Then, over the next year, we follow a weekly program of phone calls, SOS breakthrough calls (like when you come up with an idea or you’re stuck), and I help you through the tough times. We have workshops, and we work on your vision board. Part of our work together is seeing where your values are and integrating them to find better work life balance. I hold your vision for you and help you get there. I help you manage the voices in your head and teach you to balance and integrate.

Denise: Is coaching a new-age thing, or is this something that’s been around for a while?

Carla:

Every single successful executive or CEO have coaches. They meet with them on a regular basis. So coaching has been around for as long as there’s been successful people. Even Julius Cesare had council around him all the time, helping him with ideas and bringing things to fruition. In today’s society, we have this mindset that we must do everything ourselves, and do more than what we’re capable of doing – be it time, energy, or financially. We aren’t built that way! I feel like I’m an Agent for Happiness, and even though I went through so much prior to finding my calling, I still found ways to be happy and, most of the time, I didn’t really need to work at it. Which is why I named my business “Lomenda Energy” – happiness is such a positive energy, and I strive to bring that to the table with every person I meet. That’s what I want other people to feel like – happy. Because that’s what life is all about.

Recent Work on the House of Commons Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development

One of my main Ottawa responsibilities as a Member of Parliament is serving as a member of the House of Commons Standing Committee on the Environment and Sustainable Development. This committee, which sits twice during weeks that the House of Commons is in session, meets with stakeholders from across Canada as well as across the world to hear their expert testimony. The information they provide to Members of Parliament on the committee is crucial, and usually forms the basis of a final report that is published and tabled in the House of Commons. We are currently looking at the Federal Sustainable Development Act, as well as the current Minister of Environment, Hon. Catherine McKenna’s, Draft Sustainable Development Strategy. We are also conducting a review of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, which we are required to do as part of the law every 5 years. We also have plans to study federally protected areas and conservation, as well as clean technology. Finally, we will take a comprehensive look at climate change. At the request of our Conservative Members on committee including myself, we were able to get the Liberal and NDP Members to agree to include an economic focus in this study. We know that not only can the environment and the economy go hand in hand, but they absolutely must do so. The Minister and other Liberal officials have stated they feel the same way, so I hope that we can produce a fruitful study on this issue while working collaboratively with all parties. Many of the issues coming up at committee are relevant to you, my constituents across Bow River. We have talked about water for example, which I know is of great interest to municipalities as they grapple with infrastructure issues. We recently heard from witnesses how some jurisdictions, such as Wales for example, have evolved the ‘sustainability’ title to ‘Well-being of future generations’. This means that they are taking a holistic approach to sustainability, focused on leaving a better world for their children, and grandchildren. We also heard from Minister McKenna on her mandate letter, as well as her plan for the next year, where I had the opportunity to question her. I invite you follow some of the exciting work we are doing at committee here http://www.parl.gc.ca/Committees/en/ENVI. I am honoured to continue serving as your representative in Ottawa. If you have any questions or comments, please get in touch with me at 613-992-0761 or martin.shields@parl.gc.ca. The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

ROOSTER PUZZLE

A little silver-haired lady calls her neighbour and says, "Please come over here and help me. I have a killer jigsaw puzzle, and I can't figure out how to get started." Her neighbour asks, "What is it supposed to be when it's finished?" The little silver haired lady says, "According to the picture on the box, it's a rooster." Her neighbour decides to go over and help with the puzzle. She lets him in and shows him where she has the puzzle spread all over the table. He studies the pieces for a moment, then looks at the box, then turns to her and says, "First of all, no matter what we do, we're not going to be able to assemble these pieces into anything resembling a rooster." He takes her hand and says, "Secondly, I want you to relax. Let's have a nice cup of tea, and then," he said with a deep sigh... "Let's put all the Corn Flakes back in the box."

Aeroplane

Johnny and his wife went to the State Fair every year. Every year Johnny would say, "I'd like to ride in that aeroplane." And every year his wife would say, "I know, Johnny, but that aeroplane ride costs ten dollars, and ten dollars is ten dollars." This one year Johnny and his wife went to the fair and Johnny said, "I'm 71 years old. If I don't ride that aeroplane this year I may never get another chance." " That aeroplane ride costs ten dollars, and ten dollars is ten dollars.", replied his wife. The pilot overheard them and said, "Folks, I'll make you a deal. I'll take you both up for a ride. If you can stay quiet for the entire ride and not say one word, I won't charge you, but if you say one word it's ten dollars." Johnny and his wife agree and up they go. The pilot does all kinds of twists and turns, rolls and dives, but not a word is heard. He does all his tricks over again, but still not a word. They land and the pilot turns to Johnny, " I did everything I could think of to get you to yell out, but you didn't." Johnny replied, "Well, I was gonna say something when my wife fell out, but ten dollars is ten dollars."

STRATHMORE... MUCH MORE! My name is CHRIS MORGAN, I’ve been an Albertan all of my life and a Strathmore resident for a number of years. Some time ago it occurred to me that most people get up in the morning, go through their wake up rituals and think about the day ahead. So many of us know exactly how the day will go, as it has a hundred times before. This does not ring true for the members of our Emergency Services. They are not able to predict happenings from minute to minute, let alone day to day. When things are at their worst, the members of our Emergency Services are expected to be at their very best. This is the primary reason these people are deserving of “A Day of Celebration for our Emergency Services”. On May 7th, 2016 the residents of Strathmore and area, businesses and all concerned can congregate at the Kinsman Park between the hours of 11AM-3PM to show their appreciation for all that the members do on our behalf. I, along with the aid of members of the Emergency Services have designed a day with events that will appeal to all who attend. Our lofty goal is to have 1000-3000+ residents at our venue. We have decided to back the Strathmore Food Bank. There has been a huge increase in the number of our friends and neighbours in need of assistance in our current economy. Businesses and residents will be asked, but not required, to donate monetary and/or non perishable food items to this worthy cause. The local Banks have expressed a profound interest in helping the less fortunate members of our community. The whole event will be manned by a host of volunteers, whose only concern is to ensure the safe and fun enjoyment of all the day has to offer. Admission to the park is free for the event and a food venue will be on hand to provide food and drink at a modest cost to the public. There will be short appreciation speeches from members of the federal, provincial and civic governments. The events planned and put into a 4 hour window are as follows: . Formal flag raising 11AM . Blessing for Emergency Services . Speeches . Meet and greet around the Lake . Dog Demonstration . Jaws of Life Demonstration . Thank You . END 3PM In addition to the basic schedule, other events going on throughout are:

403-819-2002 403-770-8764 (FAX)

. Ladder truck challenge, canoe races, a DJ, information stations, static displays, surprises yet to confirm. Photos and hand-shakes galore.

rjpelletier@shaw.ca rhondapelletier.ca

If there are any questions or concerns regarding this event, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Thank you in advance. CHRIS MORGAN PHONE 403.901.1712 • chrisrobertm557@gmail.com

Foreclosure The REPs... Guiding you over the STEPS... Of Real Estate.

We are... 3 REMAX horizon Real Estate Professionals ... DEDICATED to work together and licensed in Residential, Rural, Commercial, Condo. We are here to help our clients reach ALL their real estate goals. Contact us: reps.remax@ gmail.com.

www.the-reps.ca

We want to talk to you this month about an uncomfortable topic. With the economic downturn in Alberta’s

economy, there are individuals out there that prey on consumers facing foreclosure. What is foreclosure, you ask? Foreclosure is the legal steps that a lender takes to recover arrears and principal on a mortgage loan that is in default. The most common default under a mortgage is the non-payment of regular mortgage payments. Legally, the foreclosure process can be started after only one missed payment. Other types of default include, allowing damage to the property, failing to make tax payments, failing to insure the property, failing to make condo fee payments, etc. Foreclosure fraudsters, as I call them, are unlicensed real estate agents, unlicensed mortgage brokers, and unlicensed property management that say they can help you stop the foreclosure. We see all kinds of gimmicks posted out there to the public consumer, in hopes that a desperate home owner will call. For example, we’ve seen one just now online, so innocent sounding, “Stop Foreclosure Now…We pay cash today for your home”. It sounds pretty enticing, doesn’t it? The important question to ask is ALWAYS, “are you a licensed mortgage broker, licensed real estate agent, or licensed property management in Alberta?” These fraudsters are not licensed to

deal in real estate sales, mortgages, or property management. They are not governed by any laws and you end up giving them money and owing even more, all said and done. Licensed real estate agents, mortgage brokers, and property management are licensed and governed by The Real Estate Council of Alberta that follows a strict code of ethics and regulations to ensure the consumer best interests are first priority. Bottom line is, if you find yourself in a situation where you’re facing foreclosure, you should always phone your lender right away, even before you miss that first payment. They will generally be able to work with you and figure something out. If that is not the case, your 2nd call should be to a licensed real estate agent for advice. If you have any questions or are facing foreclosure, we’d be happy to give you good advice; we can help. Opportunities Dropping From the Sky

Whenever I see a hot air balloon in flight, my spirit soars. There is something absolutely magical about several balloons floating on the skyline drifting towards you.

The Accountable$

On a Sunday morning, early last month, while walking out to our shop, I spotted three balloons on the horizon. It immediately brightened my morning. Several years ago, I enjoyed a flight in one over Calgary. I experience varying degrees of acrophobia (fear of heights), so I was pleasantly surprised to discover that I didn’t even notice the balloon lifting off, enabling me to enjoy the precious memories created as we flew above the city. At times, the only sound was the flaring of the gas as it heated the air, while at other times the pilot brought us low enough to greet people on the ground below. The winds eventually carried us to an industrial park in the southeast where we experienced a bumpy landing, the only unpleasant part of the experience.

“We make your dollars make sense”

Accounting/Bookkeeping Corporate/Personal Taxes GST Returns/Filings Business Plans/Services Full Appeals/Audit support Pick-up/Delivery services

Beginning that day, the possibility of floating over the countryside close to home began to intrigue me. Thus seeing this group of balloons doing what I dreamed of spurred me into action, as they appeared to be landing close by. I hopped into my car to chase balloons, beginning the adventure. They were in the process of loading their equipment when I drove up. After sharing my interests with the pilot, he asked if there was sufficient room for them to launch from our place and would it be possible for them to view the site. He also mentioned that, according to ballooning tradition, a champagne breakfast was the next thing on the day’s agenda. A short while later, I was enjoying breakfast with about 14 people on the south deck of our farmhouse, providing opportunity for both. Bonus points – they brought the breakfast and the champagne.

“As soon as I saw you, I knew an adventure was about to begin.” ~ Winnie the Pooh Life is serendipitous. As the morning continued to unfold, I learned one of the passengers has ties to Carseland, the small hamlet close to our farm. His mother grew up there. We exchanged contact information and I look forward to the opportunity to learn more of his family history. Every day brings new set of possibilities. We need to train ourselves to see them and then take action. If we don’t, they disappear. That Sunday morning led to a great memory (champagne breakfast on my deck), a chance to learn more about Carseland’s history and an invitation to be a guest speaker at The Calgary Balloon Club’s monthly meeting. Together, they literally dropped out of the sky. The adventure continues. Almost a week later, as I was preparing to leave on a road trip, my brother called from outside indicating balloons were floating over the farm. I ran out to check and, believing it was my new friends, I honked the car horn. Almost immediately my phone rang. It was the balloonist phoning to say hi and confirm the speaking engagement. I’m now wondering where else this venture takes me. Marcy Field

SELL? As a current homeowner, you might be planning your

next move to a new home. You are stuck with the dilemma of whether to buy or sell your existing home first. You could try to buy a home with a condition that says the purchase is subject to the sale of your existing home. But in most markets, that will give you a huge disadvantage when competing with other buyers. There are rewards and drawbacks with either choice. It is in your best interest to keep the following in mind to explore what might be the best move for you. 1. Consult your Realtor about options An experienced Realtor can provide a realistic value expectation of your present home and give an overview of options such as porting a mortgage, bridge financing, and a conditional offer. Essentially, your Realtor can set the strategy with the terms and conditions in your listing and purchase contract. Also, your Realtor can negotiate possession dates to prevent you from being homeless in between homes or stuck with two homes and becoming a reluctant landlord. 2. Value of your current home – know your budget Obtain a realistic value of your present home provided by your Realtor or an independent appraiser. Keep in mind to include selling costs such as mortgage penalties, lawyer fees, and real estate commission. This information will help you estimate the amount of equity remaining after your present home sells. 3. Be realistic about your financial capabilities

76 •

thenewsyneighbour.com

Once you know how much equity you will have, check with the lender to determine your options regarding your current mortgage and to find out if bridge financing is a possibility. This allows you to take possession of your new home before the funds for your existing home are received by your lender. Find out how much this will cost you based on the interest rate and any fees included. If financing is not an option, you may have to sell your current home and make temporary living arrangements until you get the perfect new home. 4. Keep all of your properties It may be an option to keep your present home as an investment property. Your bank will consider the monthly rental income to qualify you. Just take into consideration all the things that come along with being a landlord, such as property management, vacancy, property upkeep and taxes to name a few. In the end, your decision will most likely be based on a number of factors, but knowing the potential upsides and drawbacks are important before you make your next home move. Heather Dougall

I am thrilled to be part of the Newsy Neighbour family. While I do not have the honour of representing Strathmore residents, you are ably served by my Wildrose colleague Derek Fildebrandt. Please contact his office at: 403-934-4400 or Strathmore.brooks@assembly.ab.ca.

Hello, Newsy Neighbour readers! As I write this National Volunteer week has just ended. It’s a real honour to write for a magazine that promotes the volunteer spirit, and to see Aleesha, Denise, and the rest of the team back their words with action. Remember, volunteerism is what binds a community together. If you are able, please volunteer or just take the time to help out a neighbour. Well, the federal and provincial governments have released their new budgets and I have a question: “Why do you want to make us poorer?” We need stability for innovation to flourish, instead of chasing away potential investment and intellectual capital with rigid ideology. The very people and companies this government are causing to suffer are in fact the future, given the right support and a stable investment climate. Right now, the private sector has no incentive to stick their neck out and put their capital into funding projects that are as we speak being dismantled due to uncertainty and lack of market access. Does the government expect taxpayers to finance their ideological policies? They have pushed away the very people you need to have in the province: the investors, the ones willing to take the risks! There’s no lack of good ideas, as I saw at SAIT the other day. Students in Energy Asset Management went before a panel of “Dragons” with some great projects that showed innovative ways to make our energy industry leaner and cleaner to the benefit of all Albertans. Are the members of the government willing to take themselves off the grid, stop using devices, ditch their ministerial Suburban’s and ride their bikes to work, and stop using any sort of fossil fuel to function at all? Lead by example! Don’t advise people hit by punitive carbon taxes to “Go buy a more fuel efficient car.” Political stripe should never matter in projects that are in the national interest. The government, all of a sudden, has “pipe dreams”. It’s a little late in the game, and it lacks much needed understanding of the industry. We in the Wildrose have been fighting for this infrastructure for years and have kept it up from the moment we took on the privilege of representing hard working Albertans. Does the Premier truly understand why pipelines are important? It will unite us with prosperity! Does she understand the devastation their stance on our energy industry and market access has cost us not only in revenue, but in confidence, investment and talent? How short sighted and inappropriate for this government to say that passionate, reasoned advocacy is not the way to build a pipeline. Well, I guess the government’s side has no family or friends that have lost their jobs and livelihoods. It’s time to show some action for the tens of thousands of Albertans out of work. How is the government going to reconcile its ideology with Albertans’ need for jobs? Where in the government’s budget does it explain how they are going get us out of the hole they are digging? Without prosperity, how is the government going to pay back the tens of billions of debt they are running up? Let’s see the government put all the legs on the stool: resource stewardship, environmental stewardship, and sound economic policy. What is the plan? What is the goal? As always, we love to hear from you. Leela Sharon Aheer, MLA
