2% of people on this planet have green eyes. After 34 minutes of conversation, a woman already knows if there’s any potential for a long term relationship with someone. When you look up at the blue sky and see little white dots flying around, you’re actually seeing your own white blood cells. Accidentally text the wrong person? Immediately put your phone on airplane mode and once it fails to deliver, delete the message! Before going to bed, 93% people count how many hours of sleep they’re going to get. Exercise has been scientifically proven to treat depression just as well as taking meditation would – and it’s much more natural! Music can help return memories to an injured brain.

70% of people are no longer close to someone they once claimed as a best friend. People who smile often at work are more likely to get promoted. Only 10% of human knowledge is on the Internet. If a person’s pupils dilate when they talk to you, they are more likely to be interested in you. 82% of teens don’t ring the doorbell; they text or call to say they’re outside. Learning to play a musical instrument or learning another language can slow the aging process of the human brain. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Stress literally reduces your ability to retrieve memories & understand new information. When doing sit-ups, if you place your tongue on the roof of your mouth, it will stop you from straining your neck. It’s possible to die from a broken heart. This condition is called Stress Cardiomyopathy. Placing an envelope in the fridge for an hour will unseal it. A good tip to know if you forgot to include something. Your nose is connected to your memory centre; that’s why smells trigger powerful memories. 11

We thought this was the perfect Issue to showcase not only the interactive ad, but a few other additions including a few new columns. Jenny Schobeil of “Holdin Holden” is known for and deemed one of the favourite blog sites on the internet; she began writing the popular Mommy Blog “Holdin’ Holden” in 2008, which receives over 1,000 unique hits per day, and we welcome Jenny to the Newsy Team. Also, we found our very own local writer Suzanne Shaver who will be “Spinning the Yarn” with us, sharing some light hearted stories, musings and other stuff from month to month – the more the merrier. Now, we all know that finding the PERFECT gift for your MOM on Mother’s Day isn’t always easy, so I thought I would help all of you with the conundrum this year; just flip to pages 24-25 to find “The Ultimate Gift List” for Mother’s Day – every single idea is ultimately awesome, and your mom is going to be spoiled this year. You’re welcome!! Have the best May of your life and Happy Mother’s Day too!! Kathryn, Aleesha and Denise THIS MAGAZINE OFFERS YOU GREAT DIGITAL EXPERIENCES USING THE LAYAR APP

LUSCIOUS JOYS “This just may be one of the easiest desserts you will ever make!”

As a child growing up, I remember at least once a month mom would make us Bread Pudding. I’II never forget the caramel sauce the bread was soaked in. I could have eaten a whole bowl of this most luscious sauce in the world; it is by far one of the best things I have ever eaten! Bread Pudding is very popular all over the world and each country has a little different variation. In other languages, its name is a translation of “bread pudding” or even just “pudding”, for example “pudín” or “budín” in Spanish. In the Philippines, banana bread pudding is very popular. In Mexico, there is a similar dish eaten during Lent called capirotada. There seems to be no fixed recipe, but it is usually made using stale (usually left-over) bread, and some combination of ingredients like milk, egg, sugar or syrup, dried fruit, and spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, mace or vanilla. The bread is soaked in the liquids and baked. Now for the best part: it must (in my books) be served with a sweet sauce of some sort, like rum, bourbon, maple or caramel and sprinkled with sugar and eaten warm in squares or slices. Don’t forget a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Bread pudding SAUCE 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted 1 cup sugar 1 egg 1 cup Maple Syrup – you can add ¼ - ½ cup of bourbon, rum or whiskey (if you’re making this for your adult friends).

In a saucepan, melt butter; add sugar and egg, whisking to blend well. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until mixture thickens. (Do not allow to simmer, or it may curdle.) This is when you would whisk in any liquor if desired, to taste. Remove from heat. Whisk before serving. The sauce should be soft, creamy, and smooth. BREAD PUDDING 1 loaf French bread, at least a day old, cut into 1-inch squares (about 6-7 cups) 1 quart milk 3 eggs, lightly beaten 2 cups sugar 2 tbsp. vanilla extract 1 cup raisins (soaked overnight) 1/4 teaspoon allspice 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 3 tbsp. butter, melted Preheat oven to 350°F. Soak the bread in milk in a large mixing bowl. Press with hands until well mixed and all the milk is absorbed. In a separate bowl, beat eggs, sugar, vanilla, and spices together. Gently stir into the bread mixture. Gently stir the raisins into the mixture. Pour butter into the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking pan and coat sides and bottom well with the butter. Pour in the bread mix and bake at 350°F for 35-45 minutes, until set. The pudding is done when the edges start getting a bit brown and pull away from the edge of the pan. Serve the sauce on the side; pour on to taste. Best fresh and eaten the day it is made. My mouth is watering! Happy Mother’s Day! Kathryn Hartwell

Admit it: at some point, you tried to see if you had superpowers. Former billionaire Chuck Feeney has given away over 99% of his 6.3 billion dollars to help under privileged kids go to college. He is now worth $2 million dollars.

I wish I had a cute laugh, but instead I sound like a dying seal. Why is it called “beauty sleep” when you wake up looking like a troll? What makes me mad: when I forget to press send on my phone, then sit and wait there for a reply like an idiot. The phrase, “Don’t take this the wrong way,” has a 0% success rate.

Make note of what someone does for you when you’re sick. It’s probably the same things that comfort them the most when they don’t feel well.

Anger and rage naturally enhances creativity. While upset, people in general tend to be more creative when faced with difficult tasks.

increasing mounds of snow we saw this year? That each time we shoveled (approximately four thousand at last count), heaping more snow on the lawn, the voles were cheering us on clapping their paws in glee? That once it melted we’d almost want it back because the snow looked better, in a non-rodent infested, low maintenance kind of way. Almost. Fortunately, the damage to the grass from voles, or mice, is an easy fix with a bit of raking and mowing. Not that a quarter acre, if you live in Langdon, qualifies as “a bit” of raking. That big old lot seemed like a good idea at the time… But with damage control in mind I hit my lawn early one recent weekend morning with rake in hand. It’s possible the neighbours questioned my sanity, as it was snowing a bit at the time, but what do they know? My goal this fine, albeit snowy-ish morning, was to ignore the weather and pretend it was nice while scuffing up the grass enough to disguise the critter paths that wandered all over the yard. This lasted as long as it took to find my first dog deposit.

SPINNING THE YARN

Stories, musings, a little adventure and humour with Suzanne Shaver Suzanne is a native Calgarian that lived in Langdon for 15 years before transplanting to Chestermere in 2013. By day she is an accountant with a frustrated creative side that occasionally escapes in form of written musings, which is far more interesting than adding stuff up for people. Spring hasn’t exactly “sprung” this year. And really, who can blame it? Winter set the trend by being miserable; who is spring to change things? The only ones happy with the situation this year are the voles, which took full advantage of the snow cover to feast all winter long. And who knew what was going on below the everlasting, always

Let’s get one thing straight up front. I like dogs. I think they make great pets; man’s best friend, a friendly greeting at the door, all of that. I get it. But I don’t own one and the children are potty trained so I’m reasonably certain this offering on my lawn didn’t come from my home. And while the voles made a mess I seriously doubted they had the ability to leave an offering four times their natural size. Seriously, what are you people feeding your dogs?! It did lead to the obvious question, beyond the diet required to produce a pile that size. Why, oh why, can’t all pet owners be responsible and clean up after their animals? It’s a rhetorical question because according to every pet owner I speak to they never do this. But. Somewhere out there is a very large well-fed dog that travels the entire town with its irresponsible owner, unburdened by the need to carry plastic baggies, at the other end of its leash. The good news about this entire cleanup operation is the realization I stumbled across the best Mother’s Day gift ever! Kids! Pay attention!! I’m willing to share – this is way better than the usual flowers, handmade craft and burnt toast in bed! Trust me… I’m a mother, I know this stuff!! Go forth and SCOOP!! And when you’re done? Go forth and RAKE! And if you scare away the voles at the same time, even better!!! Best Mother’s Day gift ever. Honest. I’m going back to bed now.

10 Health Benefits of Honey 1. Soothes a Sore Throat or Cough

7. Combats Ulcers

Honey provides a soothing layer on the throat and is also used as a cough depressant when the throat is irritated.

Applying honey directly onto the area can treat ulcers that are located externally, or on the outer skin. Honey is able to fight external ulcers due to its ability to kill bacteria.

2. Calms the Mind Studies have shown that honey works to ease the mind of anxiety and anticipation.

3. Kills Bacteria Due to its high sugar content and high acidity, honey works to dehydrate bacteria.

4. Treats Indigestion The ability of honey to fight bacteria allows it to aid in problems within the stomach and bowels caused by bacteria build up.

5. Prevents Gingivitis Honey works to prevent plaque build up in the mouth and gums. By killing germ build up, honey helps keep the mouth clean and plaque-free.

6. As a Sleep Aid With its ability to calm and ease the mind, honey is a great resource to use when experiencing trouble sleeping. 18

8. Helps Heal Wounds and Minimize Scarring Honey has been used to aid skin burns and reduce scarring tissue. Applying honey directly to a wound helps the skin heal faster and keeps the area bacteria free, thus reducing the possibility for infection.

9. Works as an Anti-inflammatory and Antibacterial Treatment Researchers have found that honey can be used as an anti-inflammatory and antibacterial treatment. The bacteria-fighting properties of honey help to reduce inflammation from bacterial infections and works to keep the infected area clean and healthy.

10. Fights Acne Since it fights bacterial growth and helps manage inflammation of the skin, honey can be used to manage acne and blemishes on the body. Acne is caused from dirt and bacteria build up, which is why honey may be just the thing to fight off acne and blemishcausing bacteria. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Retiring? Mothers Don’t Do That Being a mother is one of the greatest privileges in my life, and I believe I’ve gotten better with time and experience. I even received the best promotion ever when I became an Oma. Much of who and what I am is due to my Mom, and her presence in our lives is about to get bigger. Why? She decided it is finally time to retire. Her final day of work was April 25, 2014. On May 3rd she turns 88. Incredible, isn’t it? Her work wasn’t glamorous but it made a difference to a lot of people, not only through her labours but also due to her giving spirit. She provided homecare for seniors from her 50s to early 70s. I remember teasing her about some of her clients being younger than her. In the 90s she finished working as an employee and has spent almost twenty more years helping individuals and families with their cleaning and shopping. A gentle soul with a caring heart, she is there for friends, picking them up and driving them around; even providing

similar assistance to her adult grandchildren. Now she is retiring, not because she finds the work overwhelming; rather because she decided it is time to quit driving. Mom obtained her driver’s license in her early 30s and has been a going concern since. I remember Dad saying “There she goes again. Beep! Beep!” He nicknamed her the Roadrunner. When I spoke with her this morning she was doing bends and stretches in her front entry. She told me that sometimes they need to be done before getting out of bed just to help her get moving, but once she is up and about, “Watch out world.” Mom learned clean eating years before it became vogue and I believe this is part of the reason for her health and vitality. One of the motivators for doing this was her dislike of visiting the doctor and the use of medication. Now she may never return, as the drivers licence will not need to be renewed. Each family shares unique times and challenges. Most often at the centre of all of them is a mother who is holding everything together. Her contributions are often undervalued, both financially and emotionally, yet it is her that we turn to when the road is rough and we need someone to lean on. It is only in these last few years that I’ve come to know my Mom as a woman, finally getting behind the scene and learning more of her journey. I’m writing this to express my gratitude for the opportunity to know her as more than Mom. On another note, heart strings were tugged and tears crept into my eyes as I listened to the words of a mom saying goodbye to her son at one of the funerals following the killings in Brentwood, Calgary in April. Her words were from Robert Munsch, “I’ll love forever, I’ll like you for always, as long as I’m living, my baby you’ll be.” Following her lead, I close with a further quote from Munsch, “I’ll love forever, I’ll like you for always, as long as I’m living, your baby I’ll be.” Love you Mom.

Mother’s Day Brunch From 10am - 2pm Dinner Buffet from 4pm - 9pm Open 8am - 10pm Mother’s Day Quotes Your arms were always open when I needed a hug. Your heart understood when I needed a friend. Your gentle eyes were harsh when I needed a lesson. Your strength and love has guided me and gave me wings to fly.

Hundreds of dewdrops to greet the dawn, hundreds of lambs in the purple clover, hundreds of butterflies on the lawn, but only one mother is equal to worldwide. A man loves his sweetheart the most, his wife the best, but loves his mother the longest.

Best love message I have ever heard was, “I believe in love at first sight because I saw my mother first when I opened my eyes.”

It takes someone really brave to be a mother, someone strong to raise a child, and someone special to love someone more than herself.

God could not be everywhere and therefore He made mothers; so I love and worship my mother so much.

If I had a flower for each time I thought of my mother, I could walk in my garden forever.

Mothers hold their children’s hands for a short while but hold their hearts forever.

Love is blind because my mother started loving me before seeing my face.

Mother is the bank where we deposit all our hurts, worries, tensions, joy and happiness.

A human body can bear only up to 45 Del of pain. But at the time of giving birth, a woman feels up to 57 Del of pain. This is similar to 20 bones getting fractured at a time…

Who ran to help me when I fell, or kiss the place to make it well? My lovely mother. A man’s work is from sun to sun, but a mother’s work is never done. My mom is an everlasting song in my heart of comfort, happiness, and being. I may sometimes forget the words, but I always remember the tune.

When you are a mother, you are never really alone in your thoughts. A mother always has to think twice, once for her child and then for herself. My mother was the most beautiful woman I ever saw. All I am, I dedicate to my mother. ~ All Unknown

My not-so Mother’s Day For the past eight years, I have found Mother’s Day to be… bad. It’s a sore spot for me, because the last time I ever spoke to my mother was ON Mother’s Day. I told her I loved her; for the first time in a long time I said it out loud, she told me to come and visit her, and the night before my scheduled visit, she passed away. Even when I had kids of my own, the creeping memory of my very last conversation with my own mother would come crawling into my head. It’s not that I spend the entire day crying or sulking. It’s not that I don’t appreciate the memories we made, or the CHANCE to tell her I loved her. I cherish that. I know SHE cherished that. It’s not even that I don’t appreciate the fact that I am now a mother and I have my kids to actually be able to celebrate this day with - but I can’t lie and say it’s easy, or fun, or any less painful than it was 8 years ago. This year marks my ninth without her. Nine years, no mother to celebrate Mother’s Day with. No mother to shower in gifts or praise or love; not physically, anyways. And all the emails and ads and commercials reminding me to do something nice for her most certainly aren’t making it any easier. Yes, how I would LOVE to have her here to tell her, even just ONE more time how much she really meant to me. To buy her a rose. To get her some chocolates. To do something as simple as passing her a card, even if the card wasn’t very heartfelt. But this year… this year is different than all the previous. For the first time in 9 years, for SOME reason, the planets have aligned and made it so the anniversary of my mother’s death and the anniversary of the last time I ever spoke to her is ON Mother’s Day. And all I can think is WHY? Why now? Why ever? Why did this have to happen? Why did she have to die so close to a day invented to celebrate mothers? And why can’t I see it as something to be thankful for instead of dreading? Why did it have to be a one-two punch to the gut? Why would I rather spend the day forgetting about WHAT day it is that maybe, for once, looking at it as a sign from my mom? To just take it all in, cherish this time with my children, because as proven by how short her life was cut, you never know when your last day will be, or what day it will be on. I know that if nothing else, the passing of my mother 9 years ago today, losing her so young, should show me that life is precious. We should take full advantage of EVERY moment. Smother our children with love, even when it embarrasses them. Even when they hate it or resent us for it- we should do it. Let them KNOW us, the real us; and get to know them, even if we might not agree. I’m not sure my mother and I ever did either. 22

This Mother’s Day should be about love, and reminiscing. Remembering my mother in the good times. Remembering how passionate she was about EVERYTHING she truly cared about. That even though I know she found fault with herself as a mother, even though I found fault with her as a mother, even when I find fault with myself as a mother now, that in the end we all do our best for our children. In the end that is what she would want for me- the best. And I know she’s gone. I know she’s never coming back, but on THIS Mother’s Day, this weird planets-aligning-out-of-sorts-terrible-timing Mother’s Day- I SHOULD be thinking of her. It’s only right. It’s ok to be sad. It’s ok to be hurt. It’s ok to be jealous of those who still have their mothers around to yell at, complain about, and cherish. It should be about her memory, and that even though she is gone she is never REALLY gone. She will always be here, as long as I DO remember, as long as I DO hurt, as long as I DO feel it. It might get easier to accept that she won’t be here, but it doesn’t ever get easier. It does make me more thankful to be here for my children, even if I don’t know for how long. I am thankful to HAVE children, and to have the memories of my mom to share with them, even if it kills me that they’ll never be able to make any of their own. I am thankful to be alive, to be a mother, and to be able to celebrate Mother’s Day. I am thankful to be able to do everything, maybe not right, but to the best of my ability. Maybe sometimes not even that. Just thankful.

Choose a Natural Sweetener: Raw Honey, Maple Syrup or Coconut Sugar Refined sugar is the number one toxin to your body. It accelerates aging, feeds diseases like cancer, and causes mood swings, weight gain, and skin problems.

Add Spices: Cinnamon or Pumpkin Spice Spices can be incredibly healing, they can decrease inflammation and strengthen your immune system.

HERE’S HOW Pour the hot water over a tea bag and steep for 4-6 minutes in a mug. Or, prepare coffee or loose leaf tea in whatever way you want. While your tea is steeping, heat your coconut milk in a saucepan

until it just begins to steam. Once the coconut milk is warm, use a milk frother, hand blender, or simply whisk by hand until frothy. Once the coconut milk is frothed, gently pour it over the tea. Finish with honey to taste, a dash of cinnamon on top, and enjoy your coffee house chai tea latte from the comfort of your own home! Alternatively, you can put all ingredients in a blender or food processor and mix on high speed for 20 seconds until frothy. This method works well if you are adding butter and/or coconut oil to the drink. Once all the ingredients are blended, enjoy a smooth, creamy, health-filled treat.

Grab your mom something you know your mom loves but wouldn't buy for herself like that perfume she loves.

Grab her a nice bottle of wine and a fancy cheese platter. Field Stone Fruit Wine (Page 27) is local, and now available at all Strathmore Liquor Stores

Take a class together of something she always wanted to do like sewing, painting, cooking, etc.

Take A Class Together!

How about Yoga from Dragonfly Day Spa? (Page 7) or get a personal trainer. Work out together with Anndee from Anndee’s Fitness (Page 37). Get all your supplies at The General Store (Page 23) Make a beautiful family tree that mom will be proud to display.

Print out a book of date nights - go to the movies with your mom, sit and talk over tea, whatever floats her boat. This would be great idea for teenagers who will not truly appreciate their mothers for another decade. Bake your mom her favourite cookies. Spend a day with mom looking at showhomes. You will be inspired by the interior decorating and who knows, maybe even find your dream home in the process. Wildflower Ranch (Page 2) Lifestyle Homes (Page 4) Douglas Homes (Page 6) Buy your mom a special new outfit, get a spray tan, and then hit the town! Start A Wine Journal Have you ever thought about starting your own wine journal? What a great new hobby! I wish I would have done this years ago. Just get yourself a fancy little book, (they are everywhere; there are lots to choose from at the dollar store) and start recording. How many times have you found yourself drinking a really nice wine and you say, “I have to remember the name of that one,” so you write it down on a scrap piece of paper, never to be seen again. Now, you will have a book that you record every single bottle of wine you ever drink.

The only way to really learn to appreciate wine is by drinking it. Find a good, patient wine merchant (there are many of them out there) and buy a case of wine. Set yourself a price limit — say, $100 — and tell the merchant you want a mixed case of wine from all over the world that will not exceed that limit. Put the wines in a dark place with a moderate, constant temperature, like the bottom of your closet, and drink up. Take notes on the ones you like and dislike, especially the ones you might want to try again. When those are gone, buy another mixed case of wines that are new to you. Now is a great time to be discovering wine because there are so many reasonably priced, tasty wines available from all over the world. Enjoy the journey! Take your interest in wine to the next level and have some fun with this. Note your thoughts on the flavour of the wine and possible food pairings. Reminisce about the day you drank the wine and record where you consumed it, who you enjoyed it with and the circumstances of that day. How did it look? What was its aroma? Why you did or did not enjoy it. Share your favourite wines from the journal with family and friends. No matter what the experts tell us, wine tastes are personal, and the details you’ll want to record are too. If you really want to go pro on this Wine Journal idea, buy a larger fancier book, this way you can peel the labels off the bottles and glue or tape them into your journal. The best way to do this in my own experience is to fill your kitchen sink with hot water, and throw the wine bottle in. Relax. Come back in an hour or so and see if the paper label is loose. Warm water should really help it to separate from the bottle without too much of a fuss.

This all sounds like great fun, but it can be a little daunting if you just want to pick out a bottle or two at a time – have you ever walked up and down the aisles looking at hundreds of bottles of wine and thought to yourself, ya right, where to start? Well, here is a beginners list just to guide you through your first couple of bottles.

Have you ever walked up and down the aisles looking at hundreds of bottles of wine and thought to yourself, ya right, where to start? Beginners list to get you started.

Types of white wine grapes: Riesling: Riesling wines are much lighter than Chardonnay wines. The aromas generally include fresh apples. The riesling variety expresses itself very differently depending on the district and the winemaking. Rieslings should taste fresh. Gewürztraminer: The typical taste is a fruity flavour with aromas of rose petal, peach, lychee, and allspice. A Gewürztraminer often appears not as refreshing as other kinds of dry whites. Chardonnay: Often wider-bodied (and more velvety) than other types of dry whites, with rich citrus (lemon, grapefruit) flavours. Fermenting in new oak barrels adds a buttery tone (vanilla, toast, coconut, toffee). A Californian Chardonnay should give citrus fruit flavours, hints of melon, vanilla, some toasty character and some creaminess. Sauvignon Blanc: Is generally lighter than Chardonnay — Sauvignon Blanc normally shows a herbal character suggesting bell pepper or freshly mown grass. The dominating flavours range from sour green fruits of apple, pear and gooseberry through to tropical fruits of melon, mango and blackcurrant. Quality unoaked Sauvignon Blancs will display smokey qualities; they require bright aromas and a strong acid finish; they are best grown in cool climates. Moscato: Is often sweet and always fruity, with a characteristic grape fruity and musky aroma. Moscato wines are easily recognizable to anyone who has tasted a Muscat table grape. (Ask Denise and Alee-

sha about Moscato – they’ve drank enough Moscato to keep a single liquor store in business!) Pinot grigio: A crisp, dry wine with good acid “bite” is typically made in Italy and Germany. Oregon or Alsace Pinot Gris shows aromatic, fruity flavours. Pairing with food is more difficult because Alsatian winemakers leave the grapes on the vine much longer. The perfume in Alsatian Pinot Gris makes it especially well-suited for Thai or spicy Chinese cuisine.

Types of red wine grapes: Shiraz: Aromas and flavours of wild black-fruit (such as blackcurrant), with overtones of black pepper spice and roasting meat. The abundance of fruit sensations is often complemented by warm alcohol and gripping tannins. The Shiraz variety gives hearty, spicy reds. While Shiraz is used to produce many average wines, it can produce some of the world’s finest, deepest, and darkest reds with intense flavours and excellent longevity. Merlot: The black-cherry and herbal flavours are typical. The texture is round but a middle palate gap is common. Cabernet sauvignon: Is full-bodied, but firm and gripping when young. With age, rich currant qualities deepen. Bell pepper notes remain. Pinot noir: Very unlike Cabernet Sauvignon. The structure is delicate and fresh. The tannins are very soft; this is related to the low level of polyphenols. The aromatics are very fruity (cherry, strawberry, plum), often with notes of tea-leaf, damp earth, or worn leather. Malbec: Malbec’s characteristics vary greatly depending on where it is grown and how it is transformed. Generally, it produces an easydrinking style, well coloured wine that tastes of plums, berries, and spice. It is often blended with other varieties such as cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon, merlot, and petit verdot to make Bordeaux style wines. So let’s raise a glass to some of the finer things in life: wine, books, and you. Cheers! Personally, I can’t wait to get started. Happy book-making! How a Horse Can Help C hildren in Canadian schools deal with the trauma and pain of being bullied every day. According to Pepler et al (1997), a child is bullied once every 25 minutes in Canadian classrooms and at an even more alarming rate of once every 7 minutes in school playgrounds. Bullying occurs so often that most people believe it is a normal part of childhood; something that happens to every child. The truth is that bullying is NOT alright, and it CAN be prevented. This is where Equine Connection and other Equine Assisted Learning programs (EAL) can help. EAL is a powerful tool that can help give youth the skills they need to stand up to bullying and to heal. When youth work with horses, they are immediately put into a leadership position, and in order to be successful youth need to build their confidence up. Because of a horse’s herd behaviour, it is important for them to have a strong leader guiding them through life’s obstacles and this is why EAL can help children overcome the effects of bullying by showing them how to be confident leaders. For children that are the victims of bullying, building confidence and overcoming low self-esteem are the essential ingredients to begin the healing process. Recently, a group of teenage girls from the Siksika Nation participated in Equine Connection’s programs and learned how powerful being a confident, sure and positive leader could be. When the girls began the program they were shy, quiet and nervous around the horses—although most people are a little nervous around a 1200 pound animal! As the

girls progressed through the program and they began to get more comfortable around the horses, their confidence increased and a group of girls who spoke only in whispers began to share and speak openly with facilitators. By the end of their two months in Equine Connection programming, the girls’ leadership skills had grown to the point that horses would follow without the use of a lead rope or halter. It takes a great deal of confidence in one’s self to have a horse follow; evidence that Equine Assisted Learning can help youth overcome low self-esteem to become confident young adults. Equine Connection is an Equine Assisted Learning program in Strathmore AB. EAL teaches youth life skills through horsemanship. Children in EAL programs learn about themselves and others with the assistance of horses. Horses are incredible teachers and can help us learn about: Leadership, Communication and Teamwork. For more information on Equine Assisted Learning or Equine Connection please visit www.equineconnection.ca

Advice for Camping With Your Pet Now that the snow is starting to disappear, we can start to think about heading out camping! In preparation for the camping season, we recommend preparing your pet in the following ways:

Happy Trails Campfire Tails

Before you start packing: Talk to your veterinarian and make sure your dog is healthy and up-to-date on all required vaccinations, particularly rabies. Discuss appropriate flea and tick control. Ticks can carry many dangerous diseases and love to hang out in tall grass and wooded areas. Also, be sure that your dog is protected against heartworms, which are transmitted by mosquitoes and have been reported in some of the provinces in Canada (not Alberta). Have an appropriate collar or harness with an identification tag (with a cell phone number on it). Microchipping your dog will provide an additional measure of protection in the event that your dog becomes lost. Packing for Your Dog: Bring water for your dog to drink if a water supply is not available at the campsite. Do not allow your dog to drink out of any running water, such as rivers or creeks, as these harbour a zoonotic parasite called giardia. Animals and humans can get a disease called beaver fever from a giardia infestation. Your dog should continue to eat his regular diet during the trip; pack enough food and treats to last for your entire stay. Pack a food dish and water bowl. Bring bedding and toys to keep your dog occupied as well. Take a copy of your dog’s health records and vaccination reports, especially important if you are crossing into the states. Other essential items include a leash and collar or harness, a carrier or other means to confine your dog when necessary, bags to pick up your dog’s waste, a first aid kit and any medications your dog takes regularly. What to Do with Your Dog While Camping Once at the campsite, keep your dog on a leash or otherwise confined so that other campers are not disturbed and your dog is not at risk for becoming lost or injured. Be aware of keeping your dog away from things such as campfires and cooking utensils that can cause injury. In particular, keep him away from the left over grease from your grill or BBQ – this will make him very sick. While camping, check your dog’s fur and skin regularly for ticks as well as for plant material like thorns or burrs. Plant materials should be brushed free of your dog’s hair, if possible. Remove ticks promptly by grasping the tick near the skin and pulling gently and slowly away from the skin. Wear gloves when doing so. Do not handle ticks with bare hands as they can transmit diseases to you as well as to your dog. We hope that you have a lot of fun this coming summer camping!! ~ Animal Care Centre of Strathmore

Your vet can give you the best advice on what type of treats are best for your dog. Keep in mind, too, that human treats are not always good for dogs. There are many things that we eat that dogs are allergic to or literally can’t stomach. It is best to talk to your vet before giving your dog anything he has not had before.

Dear Lifelines; Since my best friend died this past winter – a golden retriever named Chevy – I have had an enormous amount of grief. I really miss him and am wondering how long this grief will last. People say I should just get over it and get a new dog to replace him. That seems so cruel to just replace my companion I’ve had for so long. Can you help me with this struggle? Signed, At a Loss Dear At a Loss, I’m sorry for the loss of your best friend – that is never an easy thing. Many people find that when they are ready, talking about their deceased pet will help work through some of the painful emotions associated with death and loss. Being in a group that discusses loss might be a possible way of doing this in a safe, controlled environment. Not only might you feel better with people who understand you, but you might also get ideas and suggestions about how you can appropriately memorialize your special pet. Check your local area for pet loss support groups. Despite the fact that some people don’t understand the strong bond that pets and humans can develop, I hope that you realize what you are going through is normal and the pain you are feeling is a very common reaction – it is grief. It is also common for people to want to ‘cheer you up’ and help you move through your pain because they want the ‘old you’ back. They are not comfortable in just being present with you in your time of grief which might be the best gift they could offer you at this time. Grief can be a struggle. Everyone is different and needs to work through the process of grieving their beloved

If ever you feel that the grief is too much for you to handle, always remember to talk to a counsellor, crisis line or physician about your feelings in order to get immediate help and support. You do not have to go through this alone. 24-Hour Crisis Line: 403.266.HELP (4357) Sincerely, Lifelines

GETTING READY FOR SPRING Here are our top 10 tips of things you can do to ensure your garden is ready for spring and all things green: 1. Clear away and compost the dead stalks of perennials that provided seeds and cover to birds and other wildlife over the winter but may harbour unwanted diseases and bugs. 2. Prune shrubs and small trees to maintain good form and vigour. 3. Rake lawns to remove winter debris. This also helps aerate the soil to ensure air gets in to the root zone. 4. Start turning over your compost pile. The deteriorated organic material at the bottom of the pile can make great mulch to spread over the garden.

7. Take the time now to plan new beds or revitalize existing ones to get ready for planting in a few weeks’ time. For new or expanded beds, dig areas early and add organic matter (well-rotted compost is great) to improve the soil. 8. Build a bird box to attract new species to your yard. 9. Learn about what plants are native to your area and find out how you can restore a couple of species to your garden. 10. Contact your local gardening or nature club about plants and invasive species that are known to be of concern in your area and avoid buying them. If they already are present, remove them. NatureConservatory.ca

5. Wash summer hummingbird and butterfly feeders thoroughly to avoid the buildup of harmful molds and bacteria. 6. Clean out bird boxes to avoid diseases and pests such as mites that can harm feathered visitors to your garden.

GARDENING TIPS AND TRICKS Don’t have a watering can that pours how you like? Make one out of a gallon jug! Use a large sized pin, heat with a lighter and press through lid making holes; the water comes out just like a little sprinkler.

Turn a jug into a shovel – cut one side of the container out, leaving the handle and a portion of the side; it makes a good sturdy little hand shovel.

Make your own vertical herb garden out of a shoe rack – fill it with dirt instead of shoes.

And use leftover coffee grounds to enrich your soil and repel critters – just mix the grounds into your soil.

You can plant more basil from your leftover store-bought cuttings; same with celery – for basil, just place cutting in a small glass of water and roots will grow. Place cut-off end of celery into container of water and roots will grow.

Use car wax to lube uncooperative tools like gardening shears – when they get rusty and sticky, just rub with car wax! Works like a dream.

Beer helps kill slugs – just mix a can with the soil, and it will keep those critters away!

Start a seedling in a lemon rind or in an eggshell – selfexplanatory.

The quickest way in the world to dry herbs: just lay a sheet of newspaper on the seat of your car, arrange the herbs in a single layer, and roll up the windows.

Make biodegradable planters out of toilet paper rolls – just cut them in half and fold the bottoms.

To remove the salt deposits that form on clay pots, combine equal parts white vinegar, rubbing alcohol and water in a spray bottle. Apply the mixture to the pot and scrub with a plastic brush. Let the pot dry before you plant anything in it.

Keep soil from leaking out of your small indoor pots’ drainage holes – place coffee filters into pots before adding soil.

The next time you boil or steam vegetables, don’t pour the water down the drain, use it to water potted patio plants, and you’ll be amazed at how the plants respond to the “vegetable soup.”

Use egg shells as fertilizer – Rich in calcium carbonate, dried egg shells work great as a natural fertilizer. Crush them up into little pieces before adding them to the soil.

my favourite – fabulous – fantastic and fun stuff Who doesn't want a happy and healthy mind, body and spirit? I know I do, and eating certain nutrient-dense foods will put anyone on this path. Hormones control our mood, digestion, energy, libido, metabolism, and how our skin looks. If we don't eat foods with the nutrients we need, our body cannot produce hormones correctly or maintain hormonal balance because it doesn't have the building blocks to do so. Did you know that fat is one of the most crucial elements for hormonal balance? For years, we've been told that fat-free is good, while cholesterol and saturated fat are bad. Healthy fat is the raw material that we need to produce and maintain proper hormone function. Our body needs certain fats for rebuilding cells and stabilizing hormones. This is especially important for the female reproductive system. Basing meals off clean protein, hormone-balancing healthy fats, antioxidant-rich vegetables, and healing herbs will help your body thrive. These are the foods you should be eating.

nutrient-dense foods

fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K2. These nutrients are key building blocks for hormonal production. Butter provides great amounts of short- and medium-chain fatty acids, which support immune function, boost metabolism and have anti-microbial properties; meaning, they fight against bad bacteria and viruses in the body. • Egg yolks. They're rich in countless vitamins and minerals including: A, D, E, B2, B6, B9, iron, calcium, phosphorous, potassium and choline which all contribute to a healthy reproductive system, hormonal balance, and healthy skin. The choline and iodine in egg yolks are also crucial for making healthy thyroid hormones. • Nuts and seeds. Soaked nuts and seeds, olives and olive oil, fermented cod liver oil, hemp seed oil, flax-seed oil, and raw cultured dairy products.

Antioxidant-rich vegetables Clean protein • Soaked or sprouted nuts • Beans • Seeds • Quinoa • Lentils • Organic pasture-raised/grass-fed chicken, turkey, beef, bison, elk, pasture-raised eggs

Hormone-balancing healthy fats • Coconut oil (and all coconut products for that matter). It contains lauric acid, which is incredibly healing to the skin and extremely beneficial for hormonal production. It also kills bad bacteria and viruses in the body, provides a quick source of energy, is easy to digest, and speeds up metabolism. • Raw butter/ghee. They provide a rich source of 36

• Look for anything dark green: asparagus, broccoli, spinach, collard greens, cabbage, cucumbers, kale, cilantro, etc. • Opt for brightly coloured veggies: green, red, yellow, and orange bell peppers, red cabbage, red/white onions, tomatoes, and carrots. • Don't overlook starchy vegetables: sweet potatoes, spaghetti squash, yucca, beets, artichokes, butternut squash, and turnips.

Healing spices & herbs • Cinnamon • Turmeric • Cayenne • Cumin • Garlic • Ginger If your body has the nutrients it needs, you'll experience glowing skin, stable moods, fertility, and consistent energy. Our bodies have an incredible ability to heal and be in balance, when given the nutrients they need to flourish. Be kind to your body and Happy Mother’s Day! Movement and Health

I recently read a blog post that was about functional training and what it has looked like over the years. This got me thinking about movement, health and what is mainstream. My thoughts then jumped to how adults view movement and health versus how children see and react to movement and health. When you step back and look, they are miles apart. Have you ever watched a child play at the park, hanging from the monkey bars almost a whole body length off of the ground, swinging one arm at a time working their way across the row of monkey bars? It’s seriously impressive! Then watch how they jump and run all over the park equipment. Kids naturally move flawlessly! Have you ever watched a baby squat? Most adults can’t even hang from the monkey bars, run, jump or squat well. This proves that whatever you don’t do is lost until you start to do it again. All this sitting, driving, and TV watching has put our adult bodies in an overweight, stiff, inflexible state.

Let me make it perfectly clear, that just because you get older doesn’t mean that you should get weaker, experience more pain and become less flexible. What would happen if we played like kids every day, swung from the monkey bars, squatted down to tie our shoes or look at bugs on the ground? Can you imagine the improvement of your quality of life? How naturally strong you would be and the reduction of pain in your body?

I know this seems unrealistic, but try something simple like sitting on the floor instead of the couch. Have you even noticed how you get up off the floor? During commercials practice getting up off the floor in different ways; it may seem awkward or hard at first but the more you do it the easier it becomes. Think about kids; how many times does a toddler get up from the floor every day? Think about a toddler having to pull themselves up on to the couch. How fit would you be if you did even half the squats of a baby learning to walk? So the next time you’re thinking of getting healthy and fit, pop a squat or get up and down from the floor before you hit the gym!

set yourself. No need to tear out those pages from the unfinished diary. We need only open to a fresh one.

How Full is Your Cup?

I n the last few weeks, I have been thinking about the goals I set for myself in January... Yep, this is where I am going – I won’t apologize just yet... I don’t like to call them resolutions (it sounds so resolute), but I set goals/projects/wishes none the less each and every year. And 5 months into it... well... It is so easy to set them January 1st; it’s like the first blank page in a new diary. It is all possibilities, all potential. But now it is May, and it is kind of like that diary that you started out with, bright-eyed and bushy tailed, but then forgot about, but then started again, but then forgot about, and then remembered again only to find that one of the kids found it and drew houses and purple trees and smiley face suns all throughout... so we set it aside and do our best to forget about it. Only to buy a fresh diary next New Year’s. Oh human nature, how I love thee... The New Year is the opportunity to start with a full tank of gas, as it were. A full cup. But really, this is an illusion. January 1st is no different than today is; not really. Now it is May and I see two ways to look at this – I can see it as too late in the year to begin again, or I can see this spring time as a time of rebirth and growth. Let me propose this – join me and let today be the day you become re-resolute in the goals you

If you are like me, your personal goals are related to your well-being. We all want to be healthy, happy, pain and stressfree. In this day and age we are becoming so much more aware of the consequences of not caring enough for our self, be it physically, mentally or emotionally. So we commit to work out, lose weight, learn to meditate, quit smoking, let go of negative influences, eat better... whatever your goals are, sometimes setting pen to the page to start is hard and finishing the story is even harder... Here are 3 thoughts I have about learning to care for our self and accomplishing our goals: 1. Make yourself the priority more often. Without guilt. I am learning that it is easy to ignore my own needs, when the noises and demands of life, work and family are ever so present. Many may assume that I have no problem staying committed to my own yoga and self-care practice, but the truth is, it is all too easy to give up the time that could be set aside for that because I feel the pressure of being the best mom, wife, business person, back yard owner... Making yourself the priority will feed your soul and fill your proverbial cup. Do it and I promise those things that make so much noise and keep us from staying committed to our self will actually make way. And your ability to be in all those roles that life calls us to be in will be so much better, because you took the time to care for YOU. 2. for my own health, to share in life’s complexities is so powerful. As different as we are, we are all having to make a choice to set aside the time to fill our own cup up, so that we can continue to participate in our many roles. And to have others to do it with makes it not only easier, it makes it joyful and real.

Make yourself the priority more often. Without guilt. 3. It is not a luxury of life to take time for your own well-being, but an absolute 100% necessity. We would never second guess our desire, or the time or money it takes, to care for our loved ones, or our work, or so many other aspects of our lives. So why is it that when it comes to taking the time to look after our own health and well-being it is easy for us to put our self on the back shelf? The truth is, the more we do, that the easier it becomes to just leave our self there... where our health gathers dust and cobwebs - until we come to a personal crisis and the cup that has been empty for so long is so dry that we are now sick, or in an emotional breakdown, or some other symptom arises that we can no longer ignore the needs of our mind, body and spirit. It is a 100% chance that if we don’t take the time now to care for our health, the time will be demanded of us at some point in the future. Now these are a few points that I need to take into my own heart this spring. Even though I know these things intellectually, I too often choose to put my cup on the back shelf. What a powerful thing to be able to say this out loud to you - I am re-setting my New Year’s commitments to caring for my well-being. I will make myself a priority and in doing so, trust that my cup will be full enough to pour over into the other vessels of my life. Please hear this my friend, for we all deserve, no, need to have a full cup - and it all starts with making a decision to look after our self. Let’s do it together.

Are you going to make me eat my broccoli? The most frequent question I hear is, “what do you do, exactly?” That’s usually followed by, “I know what I should be doing, I just don’t have the motivation to do it,” or, “I know I should be eating more veggies and less junk food...” In my experience, it is true. We do know that we should be eating more veggies and less junk food and we usually know some of what we should be doing, but where I find people have trouble is finding a nutritional plan that not only fits their family needs and busy lifestyle, but also their budget. If you have ever Googled for help with a personal challenge, such as high blood pressure, and have seen the thousands of links for different plans, lifestyles, or information pages that pop up, then you are well aware of the tremendous amount of information out there. Finding out what works for you can be frustrating. Unfortunately, this is true about most nutritional issues including arthritis, gluten sensitivity, diabetes, irritable bowel disorders, and just about any other ailment. What you need is not more information, but someone to help you make good choices for your specific circumstances. A holistic nutritional consultant is well educated to help guide you through the noisy clutter and find what works for you. A word of caution though, not all are created equal. Nutritional consul-

13 Uses for Cucumbers 1. Cucumbers contain most of the vitamins you need every day; just one cucumber contains Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin C, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium and Zinc. 2. Feeling tired in the afternoon? Put down the caffeinated soda and pick up a cucumber. Cucumbers are a good source of B Vitamins and Carbohydrates that can provide that quick pick-me-up that can last for hours. 3. Tired of your bathroom mirror fogging up after a shower? Try rubbing a cucumber slice along the mirror! It will eliminate the fog and provide a soothing, spa-like fragrance. 4. Are grubs and slugs ruining your planting beds? Place a few slices of cucumber in a small pie tin and your garden will be free of pests all season long. The chemicals in the cucumber react with the aluminum to give off a scent undetectable to humans but drive garden pests crazy and make them flee the area. 5. Looking for a fast and easy way to remove cellulite before going out or to the pool? Try rubbing a slice or two of cucumbers along your problem area for a few minutes; the phytochemical in the cucumber cause the collagen in your skin to tighten, firming up the outer layer and reducing the visibility of cellulite. This works great on wrinkles, too!

spa? Cut up an entire cucumber and place it in a boiling pot of water; the chemicals and nutrients from the cucumber will react with the boiling water and released in the steam, creating a soothing, relaxing aroma that has been shown to reduce stress in new mothers and college students during final exams. 11. Just finished a business lunch and realize you don’t have gum or mints? Take a slice of cucumber and press it to the roof of your mouth with your tongue for 30 seconds to eliminate bad breath; the photochemical will kill the bacteria in your mouth responsible for causing bad breath. 12. Looking for a ‘green’ way to clean your faucets, sinks or stainless steel? Take a slice of cucumber and rub it on the surface you want to clean; not only will it remove years of tarnish and bring back the shine, but it won’t leave streaks and won’t harm you fingers or fingernails while you clean. 13. Using a pen and made a mistake? Take the outside of the cucumber and slowly use it to erase the pen writing! This also works great on crayons and markers that the kids have used to decorate the walls! Resource: www.realfarmacy.com

6. Want to avoid a hangover or terrible headache? Eat a few cucumber slices before going to bed and wake up refreshed and headache free. Cucumbers contain enough sugar, B vitamins and electrolytes to replenish essential nutrients the body lost, keeping everything in equilibrium, avoiding both a hangover and headache! 7. Looking to fight off that afternoon or evening snacking binge? Cucumbers have been used for centuries and often used by European trappers, traders and explores for quick meals to thwart off starvation.

8. Have an important meeting or job interview and you realize that you don’t have enough time to polish your shoes? Rub a freshly cut cucumber over the shoe; its chemicals will provide a quick and durable shine that not only looks great but also repels water. 9. Out of WD40 and need to fix a squeaky hinge? Take a cucumber slice and rub it along the problematic hinge, and voila! The squeak is gone! 10. Stressed out and don’t have time for massage, facial or visit to the

The weather is warming up and our thoughts are turning to vacations, road trips, summer cottages and camping. As you start on the list of items to take, like maps, clothes, food, music and so on, are you including a First Aid Kit? It does not matter where you spend the summer months, accidents do happen, like blisters on your feet, insect bites or general cuts and bruises. What do you usually do? While there are pre-packed First Aid Kits available, how about making up your very first natural First Aid Kit? Start with a container that can be sealed like a small padded nylon lunch bag or use a large zip-lock bag or a plastic re-sealable container. A great place to get this is to try at a dollar store, perhaps in the kitchen department.

an antispasmodic. - Peppermint essential oil and tea bags help an upset stomach, clear sinuses and curb itching from insect bites because of the high concentration of menthol. Please dilute peppermint oil with a carrier oil like olive oil or grape seed oil before applying on the skin. - Aloe-Vera gel is cool and heals inflammation for sunburn and common scalds and burns. - Arnica gel or cream has an anti-inflammatory and a circulationstimulating property that is excellent in treating sore muscles, sprain, strains and bruises. Do not apply arnica to broken skin. -Chamomile tea bags have mild sedative, antispasmoic, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, as well as great taste. Chamomile tea is gentle even for children; drinking it can help promote relaxation and relieves indigestion and when applied topically it also soothes skin irritations. - Laxative herbal tea bags – look for ones with Senna in them. Senna contains an organic compound called anthraquinone that stimulates intestinal activity, which in turn helps the most common travel complaint of constipation. As Senna has a bitter, unpleasant flavour, it is often combined with cinnamon, fennel, licorice or even ginger. - Witch hazel extract has mild astringent, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties; making it useful for insect bites and minor skin irritations. - Citronella based insect repellants are readily available. The most effective ones contain citronella or some other lemon-scented essential oil, but may have to be reapplied as often as every two hours. These are the basic natural herbs and essential oils that make a great starter kit to an all-natural First Aid Kit. It will keep you prepared and give you peace of mind on the many roads ahead. May your travels be exciting, happy and without incident! Happy Trails!

Here are the items you need for your natural First Aid Kit: - A travel size waterless and alcohol free hand sanitizer. - An instant-read Thermometer. - Tweezers for removing ticks and splinters. - Small pair of Scissors for cutting the tape, cloths, or bandages. - Adhesive bandages strips: Pack various sizes, including butterfly closure bandages; these are great for fingers. - Alcohol: Fill a small dark plastic bottle with alcohol of your choice, use for removing poison oak/ivy oils from the skin. - Bandage materials: Include adhesive bandage tape, sterile gauze pads, and a roll or gauze; try to find the non-allergenic bandages. - Elastic bandage for sprains and strains. - Moleskin for blister treatment. - Natural Cosmetic Clay, which has great drying properties and is beneficial in healing skin rashes and insect bites. It is a good idea to store in a small sealable plastic container. A great place to look for this clay is at a natural health store. Now we are ready for natural remedies and essential oils for our kit. Note: If you are using essential oils, make sure that they are pure and not fragrance oils. Wrap the bottles in pieces of thick flannel or terry towel so they don’t break. - Lavender essential oil is the best all-purpose remedy for many kinds of injuries. It has an anti-inflammatory and antiseptic property that can help with cuts, burns and bruises. This oil will also ease anxiety, insomnia and headaches as it relaxes the body inside and out. You can apply lavender oil directly on to the skin, but please do not take more than 1or 2 drops internally. - Ginger capsules, tea bags and crystallized ginger sooth digestive upset and have proven helpful in relieving motion sickness, as it is

PROOF that no matter what you are doing as a parent, you are doing it wrong! This is for entertainment reasons only. There are no proven facts, resources or suggestions here at all. If you’re: Exclusively breastfeeding, then obviously the baby will never sleep through the night and your nipples will fall off and you will have no one to blame but yourself. Exclusively formula feeding, then obviously you’re poisoning your baby and are basically lazy and don’t care about your child’s health.

Sleep training, then obviously you’re abandoning your baby and as a result it will never form a proper emotional attachment to another human being. Not sleep training, then obviously you’re coddling your baby and as a result he/she will depend on you for the rest of their life. Introducing solids at four months, then obviously you want your baby to have digestion problems. Still feeding your one year old purees, then obviously you’re a wimp. Making your own baby food, then obviously you think nothing is good

enough for your baby and you and your baby should get back up on that pedestal. Not making your own baby food, then obviously you’re poisoning your baby and are basically lazy and don’t care about your child’s health. Using disposable diapers, then obviously you want to speed up the process of global warming. Using cloth diapers, then obviously you don’t care about the water shortage and you must be the hipper-than-thou mother who enjoys being up to her elbows in crap, literally! Going back to work and hiring a nanny, then obviously your child will probably grow up calling you by your first name. Staying home with your child, then obviously you should just purchase a bubble for your kid. Engaging your child in educational play every waking moment, then obviously you’re a hovering parent who’s sabotaging any hope of your child becoming independent. Bike & Small Wheeled Recreation Safety for Youth Cycling, skateboarding, inline skating and scootering are great ways to get around and keep fit. Youth can use smart risk strategies – Look First. Wear the Gear. Get Trained. Buckle Up. Drive Sober. – to prevent injuries so they can keep doing what they love to do.

Look First While you are cycling, paying attention to the traffic and other risks will keep you safer on the road. Shoulder check each time you turn or move out to pass. Look for garbage, grates or holes in the road that could make you veer or crash. Plan ahead for how wet or cold weather might affect your ride. Before each ride, check your bike to make sure it is in proper working

order. Do the ABC Quick Check: • A = Air - firm tires • B = Brakes - check that they work • C = Chain - tight, well-lubed

Wear the Gear Protect your head. Bike helmets protect riders of all ages and they are required by law for all Albertans under 18 years old. Important helmet tips: • Always wear a bike helmet and keep it buckled up. • Make sure it meets current, approved helmet safety standards (e.g., look for a CSA, Snell, or ASTM sticker). • Make sure it fits - snug, level, stable. • Take the Bike Helmet YES Test. • Replace your helmet every five years or after it has been in a crash. You must be seen and heard. Reflective tape, reflectors and lights make you more visible. Bright clothing catches people’s attention in the daytime. Since bicycles are quiet, your bike should have a bell or horn.

Get Trained Knowing how to ride a bike safely is not common sense. There are three basic rules of the road that all cyclists need to know and follow: • Stop at all intersections. • Look left, right and left again before proceeding. • Ride on the right. Look for an organization or club that offers training in safe cycling for the road or for other terrains such as the mountains. This type of training is offered at most bike shops, recreation centres and similar organizations. See what your community has to offer.

Drive Sober

Keep on your bike and stay injury-free by giving your full attention to cycling with no impairment of any kind. Impairments include alcohol and other drugs, and distractions like cell phones and music.

Small wheeled recreation Inline skating offers an excellent cardiovascular workout and helps develop balance and coordination. As the number of people using inline skates has increased, so has the number of injuries resulting from this activity. Skateboarding is a popular activity most often associated with 10-17 year olds. Skateboarding requires good balance and control yet many young skateboarders do not have the necessary balance or strength to react quickly to dangerous situations. Broken arms are the most common injury to skateboarders. Concussions are also common. As with cycling, taking smart risks while inline skating and skateboarding - like looking first, wearing the gear, and getting trained - can reduce the likelihood of injury and thereby keep the fun in wheeled recreation.

We offer a wide range of counselling services including individual counselling, couples counselling and family counselling. Melissa is certified in child and youth studies and has a strong passion for youth. I can come to you! Because research has shown time and time again people are more comfortable in their own environments. Especially, children and young adults. However, I also have an office you can come to. The Core: The Flames really do have a good group of veteran players that love playing in the city. The problem is this core is not getting any better. Mark Giordano and Curtis Glencross may play a few more games, but Jiri Hudler, Matt Stajan, Den-

“There is no such thing a quick rebuild in the NHL!” nis Wideman, Ladislav Smid and Kris Russell don’t put a lot of fear into the top teams in the tough Western Conference. The only wildcard in Mikael Backlund. Backlund will be 26 next season and you hope he continues to improve! Or maybe he is just a solid 3 line centre like the majority of the scouts projected?

Jocktalk

Goaltending: Will the Flames bring in an experienced backup to challenge the new number one? Or will they be happy with the tandem of Ramo and Joni Ortio? This scenario scares me a little as Ramo still has lots to prove.

No Quick Fix for Flames!

“There is no such thing a quick rebuild in the NHL!” A wise word of reality from former NHL general manager Craig Button. “The next time there’s a quick rebuild in this league, it’ll be the first time,” says the TSN hockey analyst. “The important thing for the Flames now is to stick to their plan.”

The Kids: Love the kids! However, as the Edmonton Oilers have proven with their disastrous rebuild, you can’t win with a bunch of kids. You have to develop and make sure the kids are put in a position to succeed. The Flames will select 4th overall in the June entry draft. It’s the highest pick in franchise history and the organization will get a very good player. However, if that player is Sam Bennett, a winger in the Ontario Hockey League with the Kingston Frontenacs, the organization may be ill advised to rush him right into the NHL. Most scouts project him to be a solid NHL player but not ready as an 18 year old.

We do know it’s going to be a very interesting off season for the Calgary Flames. Acting GM Brian Burke says he doesn’t want the job and Goaltending: Will the Flames he will have his new man in place this bring in an experienced summer. Unlikely, this will happen before the NHL draft. Whoever this person backup to challenge the new is, make no mistake it will be Burke setnumber one? ting the direction for the future. If Johnny Gaudreau is the real deal

While a five year post season absence is tough to take for all Flames fans, the organization can’t lose sight that they are in year one of the re-build. The emergence of young players like Sean Monahan, TJ Brodie, Joe Colborne, Marcus Granlund and Tyler Wotherspoon has given fans reason for optimism. They’re glowing with excitement over the potential of Johnny Gaudreau and Sven Baertschi. Throw in an all-star defenseman like Mark Giordano and quality goaltending down the stretch from Kari Ramo, some fans are thinking the Flames will be a playoff team next season!

While there is nothing wrong with dreaming, and the Flames may go out and spend some money on unrestricted free agents, it’s just not realistic to think that this team is going to make that drastic of an improvement. Let’s break this down realistically! Pressure: There were absolutely no expectations on the team last season. With no pressure, it’s easy for athletes to over achieve. The Flames were loose, relaxed and, as a result, they overachieved. If you consider finishing 27th overall overachieving? Next season, the organization will set much higher expectations. Bob Hartley will be coaching for a contract extension and the schedule may not be as favourable as it was this season with so many teams coming into Calgary after playing the night before in Edmonton or Vancouver. 46

(which we are all hoping for), I can’t see the Flames resigning Paul Byron and Mike Cammalleri. That would be the all smurf line and we know Burke wants his truculence. Losing Cammalleri will not be the end of the world, as the last thing this organization should do is commit long term to a one dimensional player. A small step back next season would be okay in my opinion. The winner of next year’s draft lottery is guaranteed a home run! His name is Conner McDavid. About Jock Wilson: Jock has been involved in the Calgary sport media scene for over 30 years. He hosts the Calgary Stampeder football broadcasts on News Talk 770 and is the co-host of Sportstalk with Mark Stephen from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm.

Men, Vehicles & Sports A child asked his father...

“How were people born?” So his father said, “Adam and Eve made babies, then their babies became adults and made babies, and so on.” The child then went to his mother, asked her the same question and she told him, “We were monkeys, then we evolved to become like we are now.” The child ran back to his father and said, “You lied to me!” His father replied, “No, your mom was talking about her side of the family.”

Reaching the end of a job interview...

the Human Resources Officer asks a young engineer fresh out of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, “And what starting salary are you looking for?” The engineer replies, “In the region of $125,000 a year, depending on the benefits package.” The interviewer inquires, “Well, what would you say to a package of five weeks vacation, 14 paid holidays, full medical and dental, company matching retirement fund to 50% of salary, and a company car leased every two years, say, a red Corvette?” The engineer sits up straight and says, “Wow! Are you kidding?” The interviewer replies, “Yeah, but you started it.”

This is the true story...

of George Phillips of Meridian, Mississippi, who was going to bed when his wife told him that he’d left the light on in the shed. George opened the door to go turn off the light but saw there were people in the shed in the process of stealing things. He immediately phoned the police, who asked, “Is someone in your house?” and George said, “No,” and explained the situation. Then they explained that all patrols were busy, and that he should simply lock his door and an officer would be there when available. George said, “Okay,” hung up, counted to 30, and phoned the police again. “Hello, I just called you a few seconds ago because there were people in my shed. Well, you don’t have to worry about them now because I’ve just shot them all.” Then he hung up. Within five minutes three squad cars, an Armed Response unit, and an ambulance showed up. Of course, the police caught the burglars red-handed. One of the policemen said to George, “I thought you said that you’d shot them!” George said, “I thought you said there was nobody available!”

What Type Of Man Are You? We have all heard the expression, Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus. The older I get, the more I believe the expression – men are the strangest creatures, and you know for sure they think that way about us. Well, I went on a search to try and find if there was any research on the types of different men and this is what I found. What type of Man are you? Commitment Man This man seeks out relationships that value monogamy, reciprocity, and a mutual support. This man admires, respects, and likes women

as people, is comfortable with women in positions of authority, and views his partner as having an equal voice in the relationship. He also appreciates her as much for the essential role she plays in the family as he does for her, individually. In this dynamic, difficulties can arise when Commitment Man focuses on the family unit as a whole to the point at which he loses sight of both his primary partner within the family, and as an individual, which can erode the relationship by creating a “going through the motions” experience at the expense of romance. However, remembering and rediscovering his partner’s individuality and contributions can restore the reciprocal relationship and mutual support that cultivates romance and enhances the longterm investment.

Commitment Man? Emotional Caretaker/ Controller? Not Ready for a (Prime Time) Relationship Man? Needy/Dependent Man? Solitary/Phobic Man?

Emotional Caretaker/Controller This man treats his partner like a delicate flower that has to be pampered in order to blossom. She may even be kept on a pedestal and is not permitted to fall from grace. He takes great pride in helping his partner grow, as long as his partner understands that there are clear relationship roles. Whatever he gives, he gets back in a different way. He thinks of thoughtful things to do for his partner, and there’s reciprocity to it, as his partner responds to his thoughtfulness by taking care of him in turn. There is mutual respect, but the roles in this relationship are well defined, an experience he not only finds comforting, but necessary. He is probably a man who prefers predictability, patterns, and ritual. These somewhat traditional relationship roles can work well when his partner is comfortable not challenging the role she has been assigned to. This dynamic can work well, even if it seems “old fashioned” to some. Not Ready for a (Prime Time) Relationship Man He travels in a pack – a group of guys usually in their teens, twenties, and early thirties (or even older) who gravitate toward each other due to history and mutual interests. They often view their bond with each other as primary, and are threatened by women who are interested in one of them romantically, because it will impact the group. They have convinced themselves (or tried to) that being in a relationship is being “tied down” – an inconvenience rather than an enhancement – unless he finds a partner willing to adhere to “guy rules.” He is oriented toward a single lifestyle and encourages a single lifestyle among his peers and feels

abandoned when they get involved. As he matures, his emotional needs may evolve and he may find a way to open himself up to emotional connection. However, in some instances, he may engage in relationships just because his friends have, and consequently continue to have great trouble allowing authentic commitment. He may eventually become invested in the identity of being a “carefree” bachelor. But as he gets older, he does frequently come around to the idea that maybe he is ready for a partner. Needy/Dependent Man This man is often dependent on his partner and feels lost without someone to act as his rudder, guiding him through his daily life. Sometimes this experience of intense need comes from a pattern of being taken care of, or longing to be taken care of, in past relationships or even in his early family life. He may also see himself as unlovable, which intensifies his needs from the relationship. Furthermore, there is often a level of disorganization in how these men conduct themselves in the world, (when not at work because there is typically structure already in place). His difficulty creating a structure in his home life intensifies his dependency. Without a partner, he feels lost and ineffectual. This man would benefit significantly from taking time off from relationships to learn to sustain his needs independently, and sit with the discomfort of being alone. Facing this fear is empowering, and may give this man the opportunity to become more comfortable in his own skin before attempting to have another (albeit healthier, more balanced) relationship. With rigorous self-exploration, this man can learn to be more self-sustaining, and will see the value of learning to live on his own. By doing so, can incorporate a partner in a way that feels healthier and more mutually connected. Solitary/Phobic Man This man may have a fear of being hurt, being exposed, being vulnerable, or being shamed, typically a result of early patterns of attachment or lack thereof to caregivers, traumas, experiences in past relationships, or a host of other reasons. Now, even if he’s tough on the outside, he feels very fragile inside, so he either shies away altogether from relationships to protect himself, or he may engage in a relationship while remaining extremely guarded, secretive, and uncommitted. He likely goes to extremes to protect himself from emotional pain, including not putting himself in a position to be rejected. For him, the inability to let anyone in seems a necessary self-protection against being burned again or for the first time. This man may actually be relationship-oriented, but the experience can be so fraught with challenge. Being in a relationship for him involves taking a leap of faith, as he may feel so stuck in previous rejections or slights that it’s just too scary to jump. With support and consistency from his partner, it is possible for this man to begin to gain trust. Regardless, it can be very easy for him to leave. In this kind of a relationship, to make sure your needs get met, and if he is unable, understand that he just may not be ready, or he may never be. In all of these categories, increased communication, reassurance, and patience may help to enhance the relationship. These categories aren’t meant to assign all men to small, constricted boxes. Men will draw from more than one category, and many may not only be represented in these simple ways. These descriptions are meant to help men understand how and what they contribute to a relationship, what their motivations are, and it helps the partners who love them to better understand them moving forward. Communication is at the heart of any good relationship. Sharing our thoughts and needs and listening to those of others is critical for forming close relationships and for making us feel valued and understood. I Am A … Sunflower Seed You may not think that there is much to know about me; I seem to be quite common, but I am quite the globe trotter. My story starts in the pre-European Americas to Tsarist Russia and back again; my story has the historical and continental sweep of a Hollywood epic. In the beginning, it was the Cherokee and other Native Americans who began to farm sunflowers. I was an important part of their diet as a good source of fat, which hunter-gatherer societies needed to supplement the lean meat they ate. Down south in Mexico, the Aztecs were cultivating my ancestors but they also worshipped us. In their temples to the sun, the priestesses would wear headdresses made of my beautiful leaves to give themselves the air of the divine. Now my story gets interesting; you see, not long after the discovery of the New World by the Europeans, they saw the benefit of transporting seeds across the Atlantic and beyond. It is thought that my first seeds arrived in the Old World (Spain) around the beginning of the sixteenth century, because of my wonderful size and beauty (I was considered very exotic). I was used mostly as an ornamental plant. It was not until the eighteenth century that I gained huge popularity as a cultivated plant and the person we have to thank for that is perhaps not the first who might spring to mind. Peter the Great of Russia went on one of his many trips and landed in Holland. There, he became so enamored with us that he took seeds back to Russia. During Lent, the Russian Orthodox Church forbade its adherents from consuming oil. However, the oil of the sunflower was not on the prohibited list and the Russian people jumped on Peter’s bandwagon wholeheartedly. By the third decade of the nineteenth century, sunflower oil was manufactured in Russia on

a large and highly lucrative commercial scale. Russia was growing over two million acres a year. The government even invested money in to what we now call research projects and one scientist, VS Pustovoit was the originator of the most successful breeding project, the “Mammoth Russian Sunflower”. So, by 1830 it was time for us to make our triumphant return to the Americas. You see, Russian immigrants to the US and Canada took our seeds with them and by the 1880s companies were offering the ‘Mammoth Russian’ in their catalogues. There you have it; the ancient hunter gatherers started our journey of travels! They should be proud of their first and earliest contribution to my fascinating tale. I may be pretty, but there is so much more you don’t know about me and you will be dazzled by my health benefits. Just a scant handful of my little seeds can dramatically improve the way you feel. I can control cell damage, thus playing a role in preventing cancer. This is because I am a good source of selenium, a trace mineral that is of fundamental importance to human health. Accumulated evidence from prospective studies, intervention trials and studies on animal models of cancer has suggested a strong inverse correlation between selenium intake and cancer incidence. Selenium has been shown to induce DNA repair and synthesis in damaged cells, to inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells, and to induce their apoptosis, the self-destruct sequence the body uses to eliminate worn out or abnormal cells. I contain bone-healthy minerals. Besides calcium, your

bones need magnesium and copper to stay strong. Numerous studies have demonstrated that magnesium helps reduce the severity of asthma, lower high blood pressure, and prevent migraine headaches, as well as reducing the risk of heart attack and stroke. My magnesium is also reputed for soothing the nerves, thus easing away stress, and helping you relax. As a bonus, I contain vitamin E, which combats UV rays and keeps skin youthful. Vitamin E travels throughout the body, neutralizing free radicals that would otherwise damage fat-containing structures and molecules, such as cell membranes, brain cells, and cholesterol. By protecting these cellular and molecular components, vitamin E has significant anti-inflammatory effects that result in the reduction of symptoms in asthma, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis, conditions where free radicals and inflammation play a big role. AND, I’m loaded with antioxidants! Just ¼ cup of sunflower seeds a day can keep heart troubles away. I disallow ‘bad’ cholesterol from sticking to the walls of your arteries, thus preventing heart attacks. I am crunchy and have a delectable nutty flavour; you can easily make me a regular part of your daily diet. Sprinkle me on your salads, granola or in your stir-fries. Stir me into yogurt, add me to you sandwiches, rice, pasta or knead me into your dough…the possibilities are endless! Put me into your favourite tuna, chicken or turkey salad recipe. Sprinkle me into scrambled eggs or even into your pancakes; I will give anything you eat a unique healthy taste and texture. Yay! Yippee! Yahoo! I’m the BEST.

Caramelized Sunflower Kernels These are addictive, so be careful. Keep at room temperature in a sealed container and crunch away at will! 1/3 cup raw sunflower seed kernels 2 tablespoons brown sugar Heat sunflower kernels in a non-stick skillet about 3 minutes over medium-high heat. Stir in the brown sugar, stirring constantly until melted and kernels are coated. Turn out onto waxed paper to cool. Use as a snack or sprinkle on salads, fruit, or sweet potatoes.

Broccoli Sunflower Seed Salad Recipe

Salad: 2 (8-ounce) packages broccoli florets 1 cup salted sunflower seeds 1 medium red onion, chopped 1/2 cup mixed dried fruit 10 slices crisp bacon, crumbled In a small bowl, whisk together mayo, vinegar and sugar until smooth. Place broccoli, sunflower seeds, red onion, dried fruit, and bacon in a large bowl. Add dressing and gently toss to combine. Refrigerate at least 4 hours or overnight before serving.

Banana Sunflower Seed Cookies If you love sunflower seeds, you will love these banana cookies studded with chocolate chips or double up on the sunflower seeds and omit the chocolate chips. You also could use dried fruit instead. 1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 2 very ripe medium bananas, peeled and mashed 1/2 cup butter, at room temperature 1/2 cup granulated white sugar 1/2 cup shelled sunflower seeds 1/2 cup miniature chocolate chips or dried fruit Whisk together flour and baking soda in a small bowl. Set aside. In a large bowl, beat bananas, butter, and sugar on medium speed until thoroughly combined. Add flour mixture half at a time, beating to incorporate. Fold in sunflower seeds and chocolate chips. Refrigerate cookie dough for 45 minutes to 1 hour. (Cold dough helps keep the cookies from spreading.) Preheat oven to 350°F. Line baking sheets with parchment paper. Scoop about 1 teaspoonful of cookie dough for each cookie and place 2 inches apart on prepared baking sheets. Bake 12 to 15 minutes until edges are lightly golden. Makes about 36 cookies Stay happy and healthy this year. Know that I care for you! Your friend, Yellow Empress By: Kathryn Hartwell

Braxton (local to Langdon, AB) is only 10 months old and has already faced many challenges in his very short life. He was officially labeled disabled and has been diagnosed with: Dandy-Walker syndrome; Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum; Simplified folds of the Brain; Epilepsy, Infantile Spasms; and Vision Impairment. As a result, he is severely developmentally delayed. Because of his conditions, Braxton is unable to move his body on land. He can, however move in water and with the help of water, he can exercise his muscles so that he might be able to move on his own eventually. As he can’t easily swim in public pools for risk of contracting viruses or other diseases, or being over stimulated by the lights and sounds which gives him seizures, his family is purchasing a pool for their home where Braxton could swim in peace at any time of the day. The funds raises at the Zumbathon will go towards the purchase of the pool for Braxton!

Remember when… A self-cleaning coil top range (in almond colour) cost $1,089.00 on sale?! A basic 18 cubic foot top freezer fridge was $1,269.00. This was in 1988! Things were built better and cost less then…or were they? A little of both? Let’s compare that white 18 cf top freezer fridge from 1988 to the 2014 version. The 1988 fridge at $1,089.00 and using about 850 watts running with a compressor draw of about 6 amps can now be purchased for $599.00. The new fridge uses less than 400 watts running with a compressor draw of about 1 amp. A recent ad for a specialty channel mentioned the ‘Anchoring Effect’. It refers to believing something to be true and adjusting the world to fit this belief even if there is evidence to the contrary. This is not a new bit of knowledge – marketing in all forms and venues has known and relied on it for many years. From believing gas appliances are yellowing your kitchen walls to political pronouncements in the media, we experience uncountable examples of this every day. While some believe the 1988 fridge was better and lasted longer, although certainly heavier built, that may not be 100% true. A new fridge will reasonably last 10+ years. In that time it will cost far less to run than the 1988 fridge even with a possibly slightly shorter average life span. Avoiding the ‘anchoring effect’, it should be mentioned that certain repairs can be expensive on a new fridge (electronic control boards, restrictions or refrigerant leaks, etc). This can lead to replace vs repair which may tend to reduce your savings as well as leading to some questioning of the environmental benefits. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Let’s compare all the way back to 1981. A full featured top load washer with a roughly 3.2 cf drum cost $869.98. A new full featured similar top load washer with a 4.2 cf tub now costs $489.00 and has higher spin speeds, which help your clothes come out cleaner and dryer. OK, new is more efficient and cheaper but…in the laundry and dishwasher world, one of the most often heard concerns is time. Older washers and dishwashers seemed to take less time to do a load. In most cases, this is absolutely correct, they did take less time. Why the difference? Contrary to the ‘some people say’ story, it’s not because marketing found out we’re living longer so have more free time. The real story is that new washers and dishwashers use far less water and energy to clean. New high efficiency washers are actually able to tailor a washing cycle to the type of fabric being cleaned. The end result is that in order to take full advantage of these efficiencies as well as larger capacities than old style units, something has to balance the equation. That something is usually time. With extended soak, partial agitation, etc., washing (clothes or dishes) simply takes longer. There are of course four sides to every story – one side, the other side, the political/media side and the truth. New does not always mean better but advances in materials, electronics, environmental concerns and targeted technology have changed the consumer world. Oh – from the top; new gas ranges using electronic ignition combined with a clean blue flame means no wall yellowing or other fumes. Stay sharp – drop into www.scitechdailty.com and www.newsdaily.com for a world picture. ~ PJs Appliances 53

Why Use A Mortgage Broker??? For years, people wishing to purchase or refinance a home have always gone to the same place…their bank. Is this the best option for everyone? Not necessarily, but it is the only option that most people have been aware of, or felt obligated to use...until now. In the past, mortgage brokers were often called upon in cases where the client(s) did not qualify under traditional criteria, or they needed money quickly, and hence had to borrow from a “loan shark”. While mortgage brokers still assist clients with bruised credit or other qualifying challenges, the vast majority of our clientele is made up of clients just like yourself, with good job stability, and excellent credit.

So why exactly should you contact a mortgage broker? Firstly (and probably the biggest reason for most clients), rate…rate… rate! When you go to your bank, more times than not, you will be put into an uncomfortable situation of negotiating with your banker for a better rate. When you work with a broker, if you qualify for the best rates(based on your credit history), you automatically get the best rates. And the best part…it doesn’t cost you a thing. There is no charge for our service and no negotiation is required. Just remember, even a ¼% lower rate can save you thousands of dollars over the course of your term in interest. Secondly, you have more lenders and options to choose from. When

you go to your bank, you only have their options to choose from. Mortgage brokers have access to over 50 lenders, including many of the chartered banks, so we have access to a vast array of mortgage options to suit your particular needs and goals. There can be subtle differences, but better prepayment privileges can be a reason for choosing one institution over another. Thirdly, mortgage brokers work around your schedule, not the other way around. Don’t you enjoy the process of calling your bank and they tell you they can’t see you for a week or so because they are already “booked up” with appointments? Mortgage brokers will meet with you where and when you prefer, or at the very least offer you the convenience of arranging your financing via phone, fax and/or email. Generally speaking, you can be pre-approved for mortgage financing the same day you apply. Finally, mortgage specialists are able to offer their clients a more relaxed qualifying criteria. If you don’t happen to meet all of your banks conditions, they will often turn you away, whereas a broker will continue to source your application to as many lenders as required to find you the financing you are looking for based on your personal situation. As with any product or service, there are always many companies to choose from. If you are looking for a change, and would like to experience the convenience and value of working with a dedicated mortgage professional, please ensure that they have their proper accreditation. Should you get pre-approved for a mortgage? Ten things to know Putting your full faith in a mortgage pre-approval is like betting on a heavy favourite in a horse race. You’ll probably win, but there’s room for major disappointment. Sure, pre-approvals have benefits. • The best ones accurately measure your qualifications and how much house you can afford. • Their 90- to 120-day rate guarantees protect you if rates rocket up while you’re home hunting. • They make you seem more serious to sellers and real estate agents. (In competitive bidding situations, they’re almost mandatory.) • They’re free and there’s no obligation to use the lender that preapproved you. Here are 10 pre-approval facts every mortgage shopper should know: 1. Pre-approvals aren’t created equal. Many lenders don’t review your qualifications when issuing a pre-approval. They provide only a rate guarantee, subject to later approval. (Mortgage advisers should always disclose this.) “I would caution consumers when a lender only holds a rate, versus asking for documents and confirming qualification,” says Rob

Regan-Pollock, a mortgage broker with Invis. “It’s heartbreaking to be told by a lender they cannot qualify after being told they were ‘preapproved’.” 2. Advice goes only so far. Mortgage advisers can “pre-qualify” you to confirm that you meet general guidelines, but only a lender’s underwriter can confirm that your income, down payment, purchase agreement, property information, credit and debt ratios meet their full approval Unless you have a 20 per cent down payment from your own resources, rock-solid employment, provable income, pristine credit, and low debt, then pick a lender that reviews your application and preferably your documentation before granting its pre-approval. 3. Appraisals are the missing link. Appraisals aren’t done at the pre-approval stage. But they’re mandatory for getting a mortgage. The issue, of course, is that you can’t get an appraisal on a home you haven’t found yet. And that’s the big risk with pre-approvals. If the lender’s or mortgage insurer’s valuation appraisal reveals that you overpaid, or the property has defects, it can render your pre-approval worthless. That’s why you’re always wise to insert financing conditions in your purchase offer (or at least appraisal conditions) or get an appraisal before you make an offer. Adding a financing condition is especially important if you’re putting down less than 20 per cent, which typically requires an insured mortgage. That’s because default insurers like CMHC don’t even look at pre-approvals. They can decline you or your property for any number of reasons, leaving those without financing conditions at risk of not closing, losing their deposit and being sued. 4. Don’t over-rely on appraisers. Even if you get an appraisal before making your offer, “you can’t rely on appraisers to identify every problem with a property,” says Jason Upton, president of Aedis Appraisals. That’s especially true for condos where most appraisers (due to cost and time constraints) won’t review condo board minutes, condo finances and engineering reports. That’s where risks like special levies, reserve deficiencies, legal problems or structural issues can turn up, all of which can kill a lender’s interest and make a pre-approval worthless. 5. Your actions after pre-approval matter.

Beware that missing payments, adding debt, changing jobs, moving around your down payment money or co-signing for someone, among other things, can void your pre-approval. 6. Pre-approvals don’t come with the best rates. Statistically, only around one in six pre-approved homeowners actually take the mortgage they got pre-approved for. But the lender still has costs (like rate hedging and application processing costs) for the five in six pre-approved mortgages that don’t close. Given this expense, pre-approvals don’t typically come with the best pricing. They’re often 0.10 to 0.15 percentage points above market rates – which is peanuts compared to your costs if rates soar and you’re not pre-approved. That said, the best mortgage rates are often for 30- or 45-day closings. Check rates 30 days before closing. If they’re more than 0.10 percentage points below your pre-approval rate, ask your lender to match them. If they won’t, consider re-applying elsewhere. But avoid trading a flexible mortgage for a restrictive one that’s only marginally cheaper. Homeowners routinely underestimate their need for refinancing flexibility later. 7. Sometimes waiting pays. If you’re very well qualified, a mortgage broker can sometimes time the submission of your pre-approval to get you better rates. “If rates are flat or trending down, the discussion with the client becomes one of monitoring the market and not actually submitting the file until they are within the window of [rate] specials,” Mr. Regan-Pollock says. 8. Reset if appropriate. If rates have stayed low and you’re still actively home hunting, reset your pre-approval every 45 to 75 days. This extends your rate hold, protecting you if rates jump before you close. If your lender restricts rate resets, you might need to look elsewhere. 9. Get a second pre-approval, if needed. Lenders don’t issue more than one pre-approval at a time. So if 45 to 60 days have elapsed, rates have jumped, and you need more time to find a home, consider getting a second pre-approval elsewhere. On the other hand, if you know you won’t close within your original preapproval’s time frame, save time and try to reset the rate hold period with the existing lender. 10. Features matter. Choose the pre-approval with the longest rate hold (e.g., 120 days), the deepest discount rate, full underwriting and the best mortgage features (i.e., good prepayments, a fair penalty, good port and refinance policies, etc.). Only a minority of lenders meet this criteria. Article provided by The Real Estate REPs. Credits for article go to The Globe and Mail. www.thenewsyneighbour.com
