gages will use the same calculation based on the value of the mortgage. Without any other increase, total buyers’ legal costs, including registration for the average home, will go from approximately $1,500 to $2,500. Under this new budget, the mortgage for an average home price of $484,877 (assuming an 80 per cent loan to value) will result in registration costs of $1,197.33, a 4.36 per cent increase from the registration cost of $274 before the new budget comes into effect.
Buying a home?
Prepare for increased closing costs!
W
When the Alberta Government released their latest budget on March 26, it included, among other things, a hike in Land Office Title Charges that will effectively raise the cost of buying a home. It’s something today’s homebuyers should be aware of, and even if the new budget only takes effect on July 1, home sales prior to that date can still be affected by the increase. Buyers have to now keep in mind that registering instruments have risen by at least 3.5 to 6.1 times depending on the value of the property and/or mortgage. It will now cost $75.00 plus $6.00 for every $5,000 of purchase price to register a transfer. Mort-
Like I previously mentioned, these rates may apply even if buyers have a closing before July 1, depending on whether the Land Titles Office (LTO) decides when the increases should apply on the date of actual registration or on the date the Document Registration Request (DRR) is submitted. Additionally, fees on other LTO services have also gone up. These include title searches, which will go up by 50 per cent to $15 per search. However, keep in mind that despite these increases, Alberta still enjoys the lowest land titles registration cost in Canada. According to the Law Society of Alberta, a $600,000 home purchase with a $400,000 mortgage would cost over $7,000 in BC to register and over $8,500 in Ontario. Registration costs in Alberta for the same property will be $1,350 after the increase. Heather Dougall

The REPs
It takes only one person to make a difference in this great big world! Just the other day my sister, who was visiting from out of town, came home in a state of amazement, telling me she and her husband went to “More Than Ice Cream” for Chinese food and someone else in the restaurant had paid for their meal. She was in shock. That is what Strathmore is all about – paying it forward! And that is what “The Newsy Neighbour” is all about, too! You just don’t understand what you all mean to us and we are finding support from businesses and residents alike with our “Downtown Strathmore Revitalization Project”. June 20th is going to be amazing and we are still looking for sponsors for food and any financial support would be greatly appreciated or just any way you feel you can help. Get involved! There is so much going on – there will be a “Beatlemania” concert, beer gardens, kids events, and so much more. But, this issue isn’t just about helping our downtown businesses – it’s also about some of the most important people in the world – you know who; your dear one-of-a-kind mother! And this issue is all about her: being a woman, choosing happiness, positive energy, recipes, jokes and just all the articles from all our incredible contributors. I think we would all choose happiness over any other emotion and that is what you will find within the pages of this May issue. May something wonderful happen for you today! A Crazy Coffee Story The Woman Who Sued A Restaurant Chain Over Spilled Coffee
S
Stella Liebeck of Albuquerque, New Mexico, gained notoriety as being an instigator in one of the most frivolous lawsuits in history – she is the woman who sued McDonald’s over spilling hot coffee which she claimed severely burned her. It turns out the suit wasn’t quite so frivolous after all. Liebeck was in the passenger seat of her grandson’s car when she ordered coffee at a McDonald’s drive through window. After receiving it in a styrofoam cup, the then 79-year-old’s grandson pulled the car over so she could add cream and sugar to her drink. As Liebeck removed the plastic lid from the cup, hot coffee spilled in her lap. The sweatpants she was wearing absorbed the coffee and gave her third-degree burns on approximately 6 percent of her body, including her inner thighs, buttocks, and genitals. Liebeck was hospitalized for six weeks and underwent numerous skin grafts. (It should be noted that McDonald’s and other chains served their coffee at 180 to 190 degrees Fahrenheit – homebrewing ma-

chines serve coffee at 130 to 140 degrees.) Liebeck tried to settle with the fast-food giant at $20,000, but they refused settlement, which led to additional lawsuits. During the courtroom drama, it was discovered that more than 700 people made claims against McDonald’s over being burned by their coffee. Liebeck was rewarded $200,000 in compensatory damages. This amount was reduced to $160,000 because the jury found her 20 percent at fault in the spill. The jury also awarded the woman $2.7 million in punitive damages. www.oddee.com

I Woman Am WOMEN
s er’ h t MoDay
Women get to do some things that men will NEVER be able to do. And we really have it easier than men in some aspects. And every time I say or think those words “I am a woman,” I have flashbacks to the infamous “Helen Reddy” song – “I Am Woman” and if you have not heard the song and you are a woman, it is probably time you did!! The #1 Grammy-winning “I Am Woman” became not only THE anthem of the feminist movement during the radical 1970s, but also the signature song for Helen Reddy.
Woman Every year I wait for the Women’s Issue. I mean, after all, I am a woman! Being a woman has so many advantages. Of course, I’m sure that being a man has its advantages as well, but since I am a woman I guess I cannot imagine what it would be like being a man!

“I Am Woman”
written by Ray Burton and Helen Reddy.
I am woman, hear me roar In numbers too big to ignore And I know too much to go back an’ pretend ‘Cause I’ve heard it all before And I’ve been down there on the floor No one’s ever gonna keep me down again Oh yes, I am wise But it’s wisdom born of pain Yes, I’ve paid the price But look how much I gained If I have to, I can do anything I am strong, am invincible I am woman You can bend but never break me ‘Cause it only serves to make me More determined to achieve my final goal And I come back even stronger Not a novice any longer ‘Cause you’ve deepened the conviction in my soul Oh yes, I am wise But it’s wisdom born of pain Yes, I’ve paid the price But look how much I gained If I have to, I can do anything I am strong I am invincible I am woman I am woman watch me grow See me standing toe to toe As I spread my lovin’ arms across the land But I’m still an embryo With a long, long way to go Until I make my brother understand Oh yes, I am wise But it’s wisdom born of pain Yes, I’ve paid the price But look how much I gained If I have to, I can face anything I am strong I am invincible I am woman I am woman

Altogether Different
If you grew up in my generation, born in 1957, 70% of working women held clerical positions, assembly lines or service jobs. 12% held a profession and 6% held management positions. Those that held professional jobs worked as nurses and teachers. They found themselves taking care of the house and of their children. I remember those advertisements showing smiling women with their arms loaded with cooked food, or a women cleaning house and looking happy and content to be doing that and nothing else. These were dedicated housewives whose only goal in life was to meet the pleasures of their husband and children. Early in the twentieth century, things began to change. Many protests took place amongst women hoping for voting rights, and this led to them being given the ballot in 1918. But even then, it was only women over the age of 21 who could vote; the voting age for men stood at 18. It took until 1928 for women to be given equal voting rights. The rights of women have grown significantly ever since. WELL, woman have changed in leaps and bounds over the years, fewer women are married than in the past, less women are having children than ever before and women outpaced men over the last 40 years in educational attainment.
BUT, beyond all that, it is just plain wonderful being a WOMAN. A woman is blessed with motherhood; we get to experience the wonderful feeling of growing another little human being inside of us and the fun part of experiencing child birth, the most wonderful feeling in the world. Women or mothers are caring, nurturing and helping the people around us is pure joy. We are the best multitaskers and organizers and best of all we are charming, creative, and sensitive, emotionally strong and beautiful! I love it when you see a couple of older ladies laughing and having a cocktail or a pot of tea in the middle of the afternoon, trading gossip and talking about the olden days, or the hourslong conversations you have with a girlfriend where you start off talking about some minor thing that happened in your day and somehow end up going through a whole lifetime of your mystical voyage, or the sleepovers you used to have with all your girlfriends where you would eat junk food, read girly magazines, and watch scary movies. (As well as the realization that you can now have the same exact sleepovers, except this time with alcohol!) How about the feeling when you’re with a good group of girlfriends and have the deep relief of being able to be fully and completely yourself? You can quote Sex and the City, you can order the chili cheese fries, and you can discuss the merits of various nail polish brands at length, without even a moment of guilt. Best of all, you see a nice candid photo of yourself laughing

and you realize, if only for a moment, that that is what is actually beautiful about you, even if you look a little silly.
It’s not the makeup you’ve been buying, or the clothes that nip in just at the waist, or the time someone told you you were special. It’s when you’re happy, and un-self-conscious, and radiating a generosity of spirit. Sure, it might fade immediately, but it’s sure a nice antidote to everyday life when it happens. That’s why I love being a ‘WOMAN’!!! Kathryn Hartwell Inspiration fromgoodreads.com, internationalwomen.com, allwomantalk.com and thoughtcatalog.com

WOMEN
s er’ h t MoDay
LUSCIOUS
Joys
M
Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 10th and it’s the most important holiday of the year!! Mothers nurture, love and worry about you. They think about you every single day and will be there with their guidance (whether you want it or not), gossip with and always be there if you need a shoulder to cry on. Don’t forget mom this Mother’s Day – that would be quite a shame, for everyone involved. This does not mean you need to run out and spend a ton of money on mom; all we really want is just a special phone call with some kind words and thoughts. BUT, having said all that, another thing mothers love is a special surprise, like a homemade dessert – you know, something really, really decadent (not store bought), a special ambrosia. Something with secret meaning only you and your mother would understand. Mothers come in every shape and size and a very wide variety of emotions and insights. Each and every one is completely different in every way. I look at my own mother and some of my friends’ mothers and I truly have no understanding of any emotional connection, which brings me to the question: how on earth am I going to possibly come up with a Mother’s Day recipe that could make all mothers happy? Well, believe it or not I think I may have found a couple – and in my books, the easier the better! And remember – it’s the thought that matters!! The first thing you should know about Crème Brulee is that it’s not

hard to make. And few puddings are as voluptuously, seductively easy to eat.
Crème Brulee
YUM!
2 ½ cups heavy cream 1 vanilla bean 8 large egg yolks 3 tablespoons superfine sugar Approximately ⅓ cup turbinado or brown sugar
Put a pie dish of about 20cm/8 inches diameter in the freezer for at least 20 minutes. Half-fill the sink with cold water. This is just a precaution in case the custard looks as if it’s about to split, in which case you should plunge the pan into the water and whisk the custard. I’m not saying it will - with so many egg yolks in the rich cream, it thickens quickly and easily enough - but I always feel better if I’ve done this. Put the cream and vanilla bean into a saucepan and bring to boiling point, but do not let boil. Beat the eggs and superfine sugar together in a bowl, and, still beating, pour the flavoured cream over it, pod and all. Rinse and dry the pan and pour the custard mix back in. Cook over medium heat (or low, if you’re scared) until the custard thickens: about 10 minutes should do it. You do want this to be a good, voluptuous crème, so don’t err on the side of runny caution. Remember, you have your sink full of cold water to plunge the pan into should it really look as if it’s about to split. When the cream’s thick enough, take out the vanilla bean, retrieve the pie dish and pour the crème into the severely chilled container. Leave to cool, then put in the fridge until truly cold. Sprinkle with turbinado or brown sugar, spoonful by spoonful to make the decadent covering and use your oven broiler, but you do need to make sure that the dish you have cooked the crème brulee in is able to withstand the direct heat of a grill. good 5 minutes before trying to grill the sugar and put the dish as close to the heat source as possible. You may need to move the dish around (very carefully, protecting your hands and arms with oven mitts) to make sure the sugar is caramelizing evenly, as grills often have hot spots and cold spots. Some people like to stand the dish in a shallow pan of ice water while the sugar is being grilled, to help reduce the risk of the custard becoming warm and cooking further or brown your sugar with a kitchen blowtorch until you have a blistered tortoiseshell covering on top. Put back in the fridge if you want, but remember to take it out a good 20 minutes before serving. At this stage, put the bowl on the table and, with a large spoon and unchecked greed, crack through the sugary carapace and delve into the satin-velvet, vanilla-speckled cream beneath.

Preheat the oven to 325°F. In a large saucepan, melt the butter. Add the brown sugar and cook over moderately high heat, whisking constantly, until smooth and bubbling, about 5 minutes. Gradually whisk in the cream. Return the mixture to a boil, whisking constantly. Add the salt and vanilla seeds. In a large heatproof bowl, whisk the egg yolks. Gradually whisk in the hot cream mixture. Strain the custard into eight 6-ounce ramekins. Set the ramekins in a small roasting pan and place it in the middle of the oven. Fill the roasting pan with enough boiling water to reach halfway up the sides of the ramekins. Cover with foil and bake for 1 hour, until the custards are set but still slightly wobbly in the center. Transfer the ramekins to a baking sheet and refrigerate until chilled, 4 hours. In a medium saucepan, mix the sugar with 2 tablespoons of water and cook undisturbed over high heat, until deep amber caramel forms, 6 minutes. Using a moistened pastry brush, wash down any crystals from the side of the saucepan

Top the pots de crème with the caramel sauce and sprinkle with sea salt and serve. I sure hope someone in my family loves me enough to make either one of these incredible desserts on Mother’s Day! Motherhood has been my entire adulthood. I was young, and arguably not very smart, when my husband and I found out we were expecting our first child. I had no money, no education, and no experience. How was I ever to care for a child, to guide his actions, shape his perception of the world, or teach him the crucial lessons he would need to navigate his life with success??

There are quite a few reasons why I have failed as a mother. Too many to list really, but here is the main one: I have never done any of this before. It was my very first time when I held my beautiful son the moments after he was born. It was my very first time choosing a preschool that would support my vivacious and enigmatic 3 year old. The first time I ever held my breath and called upon Jesus to keep him safe as he walked to school himself. The first time I ever had a child have a spectacular meltdown in a WalMart. The first time I had to take something away that he really wanted, as a consequence to his behaviour. The first time I had to talk about the birds and the bees. The first time I ever prayed his teachers would build him up and not break him down. The first time I held him as his heart was breaking. The first time I had to intervene in a sibling fist fight. The first time I had to limit an unhealthy relationship of his. The first time I have dealt with a child raging in emotions and teenage hormones. So many first times.

Yes, there were at least a few things I did right the first time, but many I did not. Every success story is filled with failures. Like every success story in progress, I am learning from my mistakes and getting back up to do it better (I pray) next time. There are three things that I cling to as I travel the highs and lows of being a mother. 1) The support of my family and friends that have been, or are, mothers. I am not alone in this never-before-traveled-by-me path. It may be the first time for me, but there is a generation or two before me that are willing to share my fears, heart breaks and conundrums – and impart to me the wisdom gained by their own mistakes and successes. They will hold me as I cry in hard times, celebrate with me in successes, and comfort me in my fears. And perhaps most importantly, they understand the how and why of my failures, and love me unconditionally despite them. 2) Every moment, all over the world, there are mothers just like me – striding confidently, or not so confidently, through the ups and downs, heart aches and indescribable joys of being Mom. The mass complexity of motherhood is one that all mothers share. We are not just the caregivers and guides of our children. We are the stewards of the home, the providers of income, the suppliers of counselling, discipline, meals and entertainment, and so much more. Above and beyond all that we are individuals with unique strengths, weaknesses and passions. We are community builders, athletes, entrepreneurs, and professionals. Motherhood, in our day and age, is one of the most challenging in any time in history. Whenever I find myself falling into judgement or assumptions as I observe a mother/child dynamic, I strive to actively convert those thoughts to ones of love, support and acceptance and channel it silently to that mom. In other words, send unconditional love to

a fellow mom who is failing her way to success.
3) I am enough, even though I am not perfect. And so are you. Can you imagine if we, as mothers, could learn to love ourselves unconditionally on this path of learning? If we could love ourselves, despite our mistakes, the way we love our children despite theirs? Love pours so naturally from a mother, but often less naturally to our self in response to our mothering skills. And it is not so easy to love a stranger unconditionally. But if we remember we are failing and succeeding together – that we are not alone in this path that seems so solitary sometimes – we can be lifted up. We will see generations of mothers learn from us. I have failed my way along this path of motherhood. And all I can say is I am so thankful, so grateful, so very blessed that my failures have helped me to learn more, grow more, and strive more towards the kind of mother I want to be. I have the love, support and wisdom of caring people and I will continue to lean on them. And I am honoured to be part of one of the most important, complex, and beautiful communities in the world – Motherhood. To all of you moms that may be reading this, Happy Mother’s Day from every ounce of me.

needed fixing and, surprisingly, eldest son was lacking cash. Clearly the boy needs lessons on the concept of the direction of giving on birthdays.
Mother’s Day and Why My Children
After dispatching the boy by suggesting his father would love to hear from him (ha!) the day continued quietly until my mom called. Things were looking up, sort of, until she reminded me I was clearly getting old. The call could have taken a marginally nasty turn when I reminded her that she was the mother of someone my age. Wisely she quickly changed the subject and asked if I’d heard from the boys.
Suck!
“Boy # 1 called” I said, sulkily. “Well that’s nice,” my mom answered, clearly not understanding her grandsons. “No, it isn’t. He asked to borrow money to fix his truck.” “Oh. Well did he wish you happy birthday first?” My snort of derision gave her all the answer she needed and with a decidedly icy tone, she said she had to go and have a word with someone.
Stories, Musings, A Little Adventure And Humour
T
Approximately 30 seconds later at text appeared: Boy #1: MOM!! I forgot to wish you Happy Birthday when I called!! Me: Really. Boy #1: Happy birthday!!! Me: I see you’ve been talking to grandma. Boy #1: lol! Ya Me: I’m disinheriting you.

The annual arrival of May brings two great events to my world – the start of riding season (the “motorized two-wheeled” variety, not the “four-legged fertilizer-creating, makes-mesneeze” variety) and Mother’s Day. I could go on at length about the start of riding season, which really started back in March this year thanks to our mostly snowless winter (take THAT you voles!!), but recognizing this isn’t that kind of a publication, I’ll stick to Mother’s Day. My kids are old enough that we’ve graduated from the cute crafts made at school, or whatever activity they might be registered in that inspires craftiness by the leaders of said activity, so they actually have to come up with something on their own to acknowledge Mother’s Day. And I’m here to tell you - they suck at it. Nothing evidences the level of suckage more than the events of early April, also known as “Mom’s Birthday”. Early in the day, things appeared to be looking good when my eldest phoned. I quickly realized this was not the “dutiful son on Mom’s birthday call” when he started grumbling about truck troubles. Expensive truck troubles. The upshot was his truck was unhappy about the latest “mudding” indignity it had suffered,

A mere 15 seconds later another text appeared: Boy #2: Happy birthday Mother Me: Grandma got you, huh? Boy #2: uh… yes Me: I hate you and your brother Now to be fair, my youngest redeemed himself somewhat by dropping off flowers and a card at my house the next day, with a lovely message about being grateful for all I’ve done for him and apologizing for missing my birthday. After I texted him to thank him and suggest that I might consider leaving him in the will after all, I texted his brother: Me: Your brother left me flowers and a really nice card at the house Boy #1: Ya, he told me Me: He’s my favourite So the bar for Mother’s Day is set low. Really, really low. On the plus side, there is not much they could do that would be less impressive than the great birthday fiasco this year. And since the media is on their side, they are actually likely to remember THIS event, but I’m not holding my breath here. So to all you mothers out there who still receive misshapen lumps of clay or sticky flower pots with decorative glitter… ENJOY THEM!!! Teach them early how not to suck at important things in life or this is your future!!! And I still maintain offering to pooper scoop the backyard of its winter load is an excellent Mother’s Day gift. Hugged Your Mother Today?
Have You
Mother’s Day and my question to you is: “Have you hugged your E Mother today?” I know how important a mother really is, for I lost Everyone has had a mother, or still has one. May 10th, 2015 is
my mother April 18th, 2013. I miss her so much because of who she was to me; a friend who gave good advice, a strong woman right to the end, and a mother who was always there when I needed love, support or just a hug. While our biological mother holds a special place in our heart, sometimes another woman like a step-mom, grandmother, aunt or friend takes on the role of mother and becomes an equally important part of our life. We often take mothers for granted until the day they are no longer there, so we need to realize this and recognize that they are
important and show them how much we care. Take some time to ask yourself, “What do I love about my mother?” and then think about all the things she does to make you happy. What I miss the most about my mother is hearing her voice on the phone every Sunday, her laughter and knowing that she had a smile on her face when I would tell her a funny story or some great news about her grandkids. Every time we would visit, I always felt at home; the love and concern that she would show with the BIGGEST HUG when we would come through the door after our long 10 hour drive from Alberta to Manitoba. She always wanted to know the how’s, what’s, where’s and why’s of the days and months since she had last seen us. I remember as a kid my mother looked after everything; children, the house (washing floors at 2 am), the animals on the farm, making sure there was always enough to eat and that the clothes were clean for school or church. Everything was done with LOVE and responsibility. My mother is in heaven now, but I will never forget what she did for me and my family. I want you to LOVE, honour and give your mother the respect and support she needs. Show her how much you love her with a long hug. Hugs are free and they have great healing powers. Just go up to her, no matter what has happen in the past; put your arms around her and gently give her a squeeze. Lean in and whisper, “I love you, mom, and thank you!” This is a real hug; a hug that means more than you can ever imagine. It has the power to change moods, feelings and chemicals in the physical body. Give your mother the gift of a hug and your gratitude. Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers near and far, in heaven and on earth. We Love You! facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

unconditionally. Do you think your loved ones want to see you unhappy and miserable? Of course they don’t. So choose happiness for the people who love you. It will make your relationships much more enjoyable.
My Favourite Fabulous Fantastic and Fun Stuff
Life could change dramatically at a moment’s notice. The thing about life is it’s completely unpredictable. Any of us could wake up tomorrow and lose our job, lose someone we love or find out we have a life-threatening disease. The point is, you never know. So don’t wait until tomorrow to be happy. Choose happiness today and enjoy every single moment you have.
Happy people are more productive.
Who do you think gets more accomplished in an average day? The person who is optimistic, happy, and driven or the person who spends his energy complaining, and venting about how his life isn’t fair? Happy people, in general, are more productive and are more likely to accomplish their goals than unhappy people.
I Am In Charge of My Life, and Today...
The world needs more happy people.
It seems as if every week we hear about a new tragedy that makes us question the human spirit. Unfortunately, we live in a world where there will inevitably be war, famine, poverty, and destruction. But here’s the thing: good always trumps evil. The actions of one happy person can create a ripple effect that can literally change the world. So be the change you wish to create. Choose happiness.
I CHOOSE
Happiness
You’re alive.
H
Have you ever thought to yourself, I should be happier? Let’s say you have everything you could possibly want in life; a fantastic job, your fabulous family and you have enough money (well, maybe I could have a lot more money) but overall, you really don’t have too much you can complain about. So what is the problem with this emptiness or feeling you could be doing more or you just don’t feel that happy? The science of happiness tells us that being happy is, indeed, a choice. But if you’re still struggling to make lemonade when life hands you lemons, maybe you just need a little swift-kick-in-thepants motivation. There really are so many reasons to be happy and here are just a few that I thought were important, good reasons you should be happy right now! There are people in your life who love and depend on you. Who are the most important people in your life? If you’re looking for a reason to be happy, this is the place to start. No matter how bad life gets, there will always be someone who loves you

No matter how sick, tired, sad, or unhappy you are, there’s one thing you can still be grateful for and that’s the fact that you’re still here. People we love leave us unexpectedly on a regular basis. Think about what you would do if you knew this was your last day on earth? Would you spend it brooding and thinking about all the stuff you don’t have? Probably not. You’d make an effort to spend time with those you love most, to relax, laugh and live.
Happy people have better relationships.
In most surveys, married people are happier than unmarried people. That doesn’t mean you need to be married to attain happiness. What it means is that when you choose to be happy,

The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts: therefore, guard accordingly, and take care that you entertain no notions unsuitable to virtue and reasonable nature. -Marcus Aurelius “The grand essentials of happiness are: something to do, something to love, and something to hope for.” — Allan K. GROUNDING
The Ultimate Healing Technique? Natural Options
T
Derek Henry, B.Kin, is a highly revered holistic health coach and world renowned natural health blogger from Kelowna, BC who created Healing the Body to help people understand the fundamental principles and intimate details to exceptional health. His popular wellness guides, coaching programs, and educational courses gives people step by step solutions to achieve a healthier body and mind, while empowering them to maintain that lifestyle on their own accord. The amount of barriers to healing is a long and sordid list, with dirty food, water and air supply sitting at the top. Combine that with a poor relationship with the sun and the earth, and true healing becomes very difficult. However, if we can reignite our connection with the earth by grounding, we may find healing becomes a lot easier.
What is grounding?
Grounding, also known as earthing, is based on research showing that having a connection to the earth’s electrical energy promotes physical well-being. This connection is made between the electrical frequencies of the human body and that of the earth, which can be achieved directly (e.g., barefoot in grass or on a beach) or by proxy through grounding technology. Turns out, it’s one of the core foundations for true health and an absolute requirement for healing the body. The pioneer and the science Clinton Ober, a recognized pioneer in the concept of earthing, knew that the earth’s surface is made up of negatively charged ions, which contain extra electrons. These electrons have the ability to reduce positive charges, like those of free radicals. Free radicals circulate in our body looking for electrons in order to be complete, and once they do, they are “neutralized” and no longer contribute to inflammation in the body. Ober finally received support in 2004, after many years of personal research, when the Journal of Alternative and Complimentary Medicine published one of his studies. The results showed that “earthing during your sleep resynchronizes cortisol secretion more in alignment with its natural, normal rhythm.” This research has provided us with a whole new way to appreciate the earth, and that we need to ditch all those things that interrupt our connection with this healing resource. Conditions improved with grounding The key factor that seems to be linked with earthing is the reduction of inflammation. Since there are over 80 chronic diseases associated

with inflammation, including cancer and type 2 diabetes, earthing could be one of the greatest “rediscoveries” of our time. Studies have indicated several benefits to your health while earthing, including: ٠ Improved sleep ٠ Decreased pain and inflammation ٠ Enhanced immune system ٠ Reduced anxiety and stress ٠ Improved gastrointestinal symptoms ٠ Improved cardiovascular function ٠ Improved energy levels ٠ Improved hormonal cycles ٠ More dramatic healing for sports injuries ٠ Reduced jet lag An impressive list for simply getting back in touch with the ground. This is perhaps one of the simplest acts you can take in order to begin the healing process. How we got disconnected and how we can hook back up We have insulated ourselves from the earth primarily through shoes with rubber or plastic soles. This daily practice with little to no reprieve has consistently unplugged us from the healing negative charge of the earth. The most effective way to get grounded again is to get your bare feet in the grass (slightly wet is best), dirt, sand or salt water for 20-30 minutes a day (gardening with bare hands will also provide a connection). If you live close to water, walking in close vicinity to it will improve the experience. If these are not reasonable options for you, then consider grounding technology like earthing sheets, mats, car seat covers and sandals which will essentially do the same thing. Keep in mind that concrete is a good conductor as well, as long as it is not sealed or painted, as materials like asphalt and wood will not allow electrons to pass through so are not suitable for grounding (which makes barefoot travel in the house typically useless). Also, the higher up you are in a building, the more removed you are from the surface of the earth, which has additional negative implications. Some of the worst places for EMF’s that make grounding even more important are airports, airplanes, and working on a higher floor with banks of computers in a high rise building. All these places put off considerable EMF’s, and this is when grounding is even more important. If this is new to you, don’t feel bad. Most people are still unaware of grounding and all the other factors that stop you from healing your body. If you are done with guessing on how to heal your body and just want to know how to eliminate ALL the bad and bring in ALL the good, check into our 8 week online health program – THRIVE. What is GRAVITY Training?
It is a mode of training where the body weight (or a fraction thereof) is used to provide the resistance in a great variety of exercises. Participants use their body weight as resistance against the pull of gravity on a free rolling glide-board and it encourages an unrestricted free flow of multi-plane movement that recruits multiple muscle groups always working the core stabilizers. The equipment used is the Total Gym® GTS® and the pull of gravity, providing a constant resistance that doesn’t vary from beginning to middle to end range of motion. It engages the body in all five components of exercise: body composition, muscular endurance, cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and flexibility. Clients of any age and fitness level can work every major muscle group in a functional and safe manner.
The dynamic pulley system allows the user to create the most functional movement patterns imaginable. Over 200 biomechanically correct exercises make it the most versatile workout available, offering fresh, fun and challenging training sessions. There is also customized sports conditioning and post-rehab programs for clients who want to improve form and/or minimum injury in their activities (i.e., hockey, golf, figure skating, gymnastics). Facts About
to stop many times during the night. This makes oxygen levels drop, which affects the heart and increases risk of heart attack, stroke and diabetes.
FAT
Nasty, nasty fat. We all have it. Some may have a little bit more than others and it seems no matter the amount of body fat you carry, you are never happy about it – and once it’s here, it never wants to go away! That’s what I’m finding – it took me years to put it on and seems quite attached to me; much more than I am of it. There is light at the end of the tunnel, though; I have lost 3 pounds of the nasty stuff in the past month! Yahoo!
• Abdominal, or belly fat is viewed as a bigger health risk than hip or thigh fat. It has a worse effect on insulin resistance, boosting the risk of diabetes, and a worse effect on the level of fats in the blood, boosting heart and stroke risks. • There are 3,500 calories in a pound of fat. You need to burn off 3,500 calories more than you take in to lose 1 pound. This translates into 500 calories per day to lose 1 pound in a week, or 1,000 calories per day to lose 2 pounds in a week. (1-2 pounds per week is generally considered to be a safe rate of weight loss). This can be achieved by eating fewer calories or through physical activity. A combination of both is best. • Believe it or not, healthy skin and hair are maintained by fat. Fat helps the body absorb and move the vitamins A, D, E, and K through the bloodstream. • Foods that are high in protein, such as eggs, fish, nuts, and beans will accelerate fat-burning because they are more difficult for the body to break down. Your body will work much harder during the digestion process after eating these types of foods.
Every single day I am determined to stay motivated and focused on losing the fat, so I’ve plastered little stick notes all over my house about fat; it is not our friend, no matter how much it loves you.
• Fat stores energy, whereas muscle burns energy, so even when idle, your muscles will end up burning more calories. Each pound of fat burns between two and three calories when idle, and each pound of muscle burns between seven and ten calories.
DID YOU KNOW? • Replacing 3 pounds of fat with muscle hikes your metabolic rate enough to burn 150 more calories each day, even at rest?
• Any type of exercise you do that is challenging for your muscles will result in excess calorie-burning. That’s why it’s important to challenge yourself and work hard during your fitness routine. If you’re not sweating and not feeling challenged, then you won’t burn as many calories.
• We all need body fat to live. In fact, it is so essential to normal, healthy functioning that an average, size 10, slim female carries approximately 100,000 calories of fat on her body. That’s equal to 54 packs of butter in total. But before you get too depressed, it’s also enough to fuel the energy required to shop for 86 days!
• When you lose weight by eating healthier and exercising, your body will naturally convert your fat into carbohydrates that can be used as energy. Then, your body converts that same matter into water, heat, and carbon dioxide.
• Most people gain an average of just 1g of extra body fat a day - but before you reach for that second slice of cake, consider this: 1 gram a day equals 365 grams of extra body fat a year. A gain of 365g every year, after the age of 25 would mean that by the time you hit your 50th birthday, you’d have laid down an extra 20 lbs. of excess body fat – or as it’s better known ...middle aged spread!
• A calorie is simply a unit of food energy, and more specifically, is the amount of energy it takes to increase the temperature of one gram of water by 1 °C. The human body uses calories in the same way a car uses gasoline. Therefore, if you’re not going very far and not being very energetic, you won’t require as many calories.
• A typical adult has approximately 50 billion fat cells, which means there are more fat cells in one human body than there are people on the earth. First the good news: fat cells generally do not increase in number after puberty so even if you gain weight, the number of fat cells you have remains the same. Now the bad news: each fat cell simply gets bigger and can expand up to ten times its normal size.
• The human body generally requires about 1,500 calories per day just to perform normal vital body functions such as breathing and digestion. On top of that, you’ll need about 500 calories, or slightly more, just to perform physical activity. If you consume more calories than you burn off through physical activity, then your body converts those calories into fat.
• Fat cells live for an average of ten years. Once a fat cell dies, the body makes a brand new one to take its place. However, once brain cells die, they are gone for good, which is why, as we age, we may lose our memory but love handles can stay forever!
I KNOW it is hard to lose weight! Stay motivated and try to exercise everyday – I’ve got to tell you, it feels soooooo good when you can tighten your belt just one more notch and when you step on the scale and have lost even one pound, then 3 pounds, then 5 pounds! It will change your life and even give you a boost of self-esteem!
• The truth is that overweight women have higher levels of male hormones, which increases their risk of heart disease.
Stay motivated!! You can do it.
You can do it!
• Overweight people often suffer from sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, which is dangerous. Sleep apnea causes breathing

It seems I’m on a bit of a roll when it comes to additives in the food we eat.
Living a Guilt-Free Life… What?! W
What would your life be like if you lived without the feeling of judgement? Here’s the thing: guilt comes from a place of judgement on ourselves. No single person can ‘make’ us feel guilty. When we are living outside of our values, we can feel this guilt. Guilt can feel heavy, guilt can create physical pain, so why do so many of us continue to judge ourselves and continue to feel this way? Most often this happens because we are not speaking our truth. We are living in a time where we are ready to be aligned internally with our truth. We are ready to be living life more fully. Without guilt, there is innocence. What would life be like if you felt innocence more often than guilt? Even better…and just play with me for a moment, but what if... What if...What if guilt did not exist in this world? Here is what happens when we get motivated by innocence: we create powerful visions and goals and we begin living life from that vision, not toward it. There is so much love to go around. Love yourself fully and find your innocence again. Life is way way way more filled with moments of HOORAAAAYS when we listen to the truth. With many blessings on your journey to your highest self, Carla Lomenda-Segovia Lomenda Energy Inc.

Chris Kresser, M.S., L.Ac is a globally recognized leader in the fields of ancestral health, Paleo nutrition, and functional and integrative medicine says “Remember, in cases involving modern ingredients, the burden of proof should be on manufacturers to prove that they’re safe, rather than on consumers to prove that they’re harmful. Because the evidence isn’t conclusive either way, I recommend avoiding carrageenan, especially if you have a history of digestive problems”.

Although derived from a natural source, carrageenan appears to be particularly destructive to the digestive system, triggering an immune response similar to that your body has when invaded by pathogens like salmonella. The result: “Carrageenan predictably causes inflammation, which can lead to ulcerations and bleeding,” explains veteran carrageenan researcher Joanne Tobacman, MD, associate professor of clinical medicine at the University Of Illinois School Of Medicine at Chicago. She says the food ingredient irritates by activating an immune response that dials up inflammation. Her previous work showed a concerning connection between carrageenan and gastrointestinal cancer in lab animals, and she’s involved with ongoing research funded through the National Institutes of Health that is investigating carrageenan’s effect on ulcerative colitis and other diseases like diabetes.
Now, don’t get all bogged down and nervous or upset about all the additives that are in the food we eat – I just believe that it’s important to be aware and to ask questions and just try to eat natural food, not the stuff that has 15 ingredients with most you cannot even pronounce – that’s all I’m saying!

Carrageenans, or carrageenins, are a family of linear sulphated polysaccharides that are extracted from red edible seaweeds. They are widely used in the food industry for their gelling, thickening, and stabilizing properties and yes, completely natural. Many food manufacturers—even some makers of commercial organic foods—are adding “carrageenan” to foods like yogurt, chocolate, soymilk, and even ice cream to give the foods a thicker consistency and to make low-fat versions taste fuller. It’s often added to beverages to keep their ingredients from separating; you’ll find it in many nutritional shakes, milk products, and milk replacements. The ingredient even crops up in certain frozen dinners, soups, and commercial broth products. The problem: carrageenan could be causing inflammation, gut irritation, and even cancer.
DID YOU KNOW, that ingredients are not required by law to be listed on alcoholic beverages, which may contain carrageenan? In fact, carrageenan is commonly used to clarify beer but is not listed on the label.

If you read my article last month about monosodium glutamate (MSG), you would know me as a label reader – I read absolutely every single label before I purchase anything I’m going to put into my mouth. It has become apparent to me that there are many ingredients in the foods we eat that really are not good for us and sometimes eating something natural isn’t good for you.

happy and healthy.
While recently waiting in line at the grocery store, I could not clearly screamed frustration while waiting for yet another patron completing many small transactions. And let’s be honest; we have all been there. A moment of frustration that sends out a negative wave of signals to those around us. However, what is important is how we handle that energy in the moment so we do not embrace the negative energy of others. Our emotions drive our physiology. When this occurs, it clouds our ability to think rationally and logically. When emotions such as fear, frustration, anger, resentment and anxiety are present, it changes our heart’s rhythm, sending “a cascade of over 1,400 biochemical changes that are set in motion that have a wide range of effects on the body’s systems” (Institute of HeartMath®, 2015). So how can we actively reduce the mama drama? How can we ensure we are not allowing the negative energy of others take over like weeds in our emotional garden? 1. Recognize when you’re triggered. Even during a simple conversation, we are triggered by how we are perceiving the message generated. It is important to recognize when these triggers create negative emotion in us. When we recognize them, we can change them. 2. Refuse to participate. When others are behaving or speaking negatively about someone or something, choose not to participate. When you participate, you are spreading that negative

heart energy. Don’t get sucked in to the drama. It creates unhealthy stress. 3. Find another solution. Changing your physiology and emotional state is important. Rather than engaging in the negative stress of drama, choose another route to emotional regulation. Change the path and change the outcome with positive emotions such as gratitude, joy, excitement, happiness and passion. So rather than feeding the negative, make a conscious choice to find a solution or topic that will increase your vitality and resiliency by tapping into your positive side of gratitude and happiness. After all, you will create a beautiful garden of self in the process. Jacqueline Buckley

Dear Lifelines, My mother recently went into a care facility and we have been advised to get some paperwork together for her in case she loses her capability to think clearly. What type of paperwork might this include? Signed, Preparing for the worst Dear Reader,
Thank you for writing and I wish your mother all the best in her new home. There are many things to consider during a time of transition to a care facility and oftentimes they have staff on hand who can assist in getting paperwork together including tax paperwork, applying for benefits from the government that she might be eligible for, Wills, Power of Attorney and Personal Directives. I would recommend seeking legal advice through the facility if this support is available. Hopefully your mother is comfortable in her new home and she finds she is fitting in – once that is established you might want to explore the preparation of a Personal Directive, a Will and a Power of Attorney. A Personal Directive offers your mother some comfort in knowing that should she lose the capability to make decisions for her-

self, someone will be appointed of her choosing (referred to as an agent) to help explore options for her with regards to such things as health care, accommodations, roommates, social, educational and employment, and other personal matters other than finances. This can potentially eliminate a lot of worry and debate from family members should there be complications with your mother’s health and mental well-being. A Power of Attorney can offer your mother additional comfort in knowing that someone she trusts can support her in financial decision-making when she is no longer able. Depending on debts, accounts, trusts and other financial responsibilities, the task of being a Power of Attorney can be significant. In addition, the Power of Attorney has a duty to protect the individual’s best interests. Another option is the Enduring Power of Attorney, which can potentially be enacted while your mother is still capable of making decisions. A Will can offer your mother satisfaction in knowing that her estate will be divided according to her wishes. An Executor is the designated person who is responsible for carrying out the wishes of the will. The task of being an Executor is no small responsibility and the designation should be made with careful consideration. Although it might seem arduous at the time, it is very worthwhile to explore the preparation of these documents with proper legal advice. Kerby Centre – an older adult facility in Calgary - has legal representatives that will sit with your mother and help support her in the preparation of these documents. Documents are also explained in detail at www.cplea.ca. In looking locally, the Wheatland Further Education Society sometimes offers courses on this subject matter. Visit www.wfes.ca for details. Best of wishes to your mother - it’s wonderful that she has you asking these critical questions that can potentially make life so much easier for your family in the future. Did You Know?
A
PETS
Animals are very likely to become infected with one or more parasites during their lifetime. A very common time for infection is as a youngster. Some parasites can actually be transmitted to a newborn through mother’s milk, or even in utero. Parasites are sneaky, and can infect in many different ways. For example, ingestion of eggs in the environment, ingestion of an infected host, or via insect/vector bites.
A few parasites are zoonotic. This means that they are transmissible from animal to human. For example, roundworms are zoonotic. These worms spend their adult life within the host’s intestines, but the larvae can migrate throughout the body tissues and pose a major threat, especially if they have infected the brain or eye(s). A human may inadvertently ingest an egg from the environment of an infected pet via feces (i.e.: children playing in the sandbox or on the grass). Gross, yes, but true! Travelling with your pet can pose new risks. Different countries, and even provinces/states harbour various types of parasites that your pet may not have proper protection against. For example, heart worm is transmitted to your pet via mosquitoes and can thrive within the heart, potentially causing heart failure. A trip into certain areas of British Columbia may be all it takes. Vector-Borne diseases are transmitted commonly by fleas and ticks. A tick can carry diseases such as Lyme Disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and Ehrlichiosis. Fleas can cause severe allergies and irritation, and can also transmit tapeworms.
How Can I Prevent This? Prevention is the key when it comes to protecting yourself and your family from invading parasites. • Wash your hands and ensure children are washing their hands after playing with animals. • After your pet has done his deed, pick up feces immediately. • Use sandboxes with covers to prevent cats from eliminating in them. • Talk to your veterinarian about which medication(s) are nec-
essary for your individual pet to help prevent infections. Often a monthly medication can effectively protect him. • Let your veterinarian know when and where you are travelling. Even if it’s just outside of the province. • Ensure young kittens and puppies are examined and treated for parasites as they may have unknowingly become infected from mother’s milk. •If your animal is on the RAW diet, ensure all meat is cooked before feeding. For all of your pet’s medical needs, or for further information, contact The Animal Care Centre of Strathmore! See their ad on this page.

How Do The
Seasons Pets? Affect Your
We all know how much the seasons affect us personally from our skin, hair, eyes and even our appetites! If the different seasons affect our bodies, have you ever given any thought as to how they affect your pets? Owners should be mindful of both indoor and outdoor hazards as they leap into lawn and garden chores, spring cleaning, travel, and higher activity levels.
I know when I take my little dachshunds for their first real warm weather walk, they tire easily and I have found I must work our way up to the biggie walks. There are all sorts of other things to consider when it comes to your furry friends; here are a few tips:
Increase Exercise Slowly While warmer temperatures invite more strenuous physical activity, joggers and bicyclers should realize not all dogs have the endurance for miles of running, though they’ll do their best to keep up. Gradually increase distance and observe dogs for signs of heavy panting or possible heat exhaustion and remember, sun-roasted asphalt can burn a dog’s sensitive paws. They aren’t little shoes!
Secure Windows and Screens There’s nothing more refreshing than a cool breeze airing out the house, but loose or poor fitting screens can be an easy escape hatch for curious kitties and pups. Check all screens and window frames to assure everything fits tightly before leaving pets home alone with the windows open.
Spring Clean with Care The chemicals in most household cleaning products pose risks to

Buckle up Your Pets
Get Summer Coats In Shape Most cats and dogs “blow coat at this time of year, with longer haired breeds prone to tangles and matts as the dry, dead winter hair fights its way out. Regular brushing helps restore oil to the coat and your vet may recommend an Omega 3 fatty acid supplement to keep coat and skin in good shape. Only bathe after a good brushing and don’t go crazy with the clippers, thinking shaving your cat or dog will make him more comfortable. Coats protect from both heat and cold, so leave at least an inch or two of coat for insulation from sun, heat and insects.
Watch out for seasonal allergies and Treat with Vet-Recommended Meds. Pets can be allergic to foods, dust, plants and pollens just like people. Allergic reactions can cause anything from minor sneezing to life-threatening anaphylactic shock. With grasses, flowers and trees abloom in the spring season, like people, pets can suffer from seasonal allergies too. “Pets manifest allergies through the skin instead of people with their respiratory systems. While there is typically no way to prevent seasonal allergies in pets, owners can keep an eye out for excessive scratching or ear troubles in their animal, as these can be classic signs of allergies. If you suspect your pet has an allergy, consult your veterinarian as soon as possible.
I.D. All Pets Increased outdoor activity, coupled with open doors and windows lead to more escapes in spring and summer. Even indoor cats should wear some sort of visible I.D. just in case. Even if your pet is microchipped, visible I.D. helps identify them more quickly. Since my sneaky kitty has learned to open the sliding screen door to the deck, he’s considered a “flight risk. Thus, he wears a comfortable fabric collar. Your pet is part of your family and I actually call my pets “my children because they are my furbabies whom I love and care for deeply. They enrich us in small and undramatic ways every day—by making us laugh, keeping us company, and offering us unconditional love. We owe the same to them.

CLEVER PRIEST
A distinguished young woman on a flight from Switzerland asked the priest beside her, “Father, may I ask a favour?” ”Of course, what may I do for you?” “Well, I bought an expensive electronic hairdryer that is well over the customs limits, and I’m afraid they’ll confiscate it. Is there any way you could carry it through customs for me? Under your robes perhaps?” “I would love to help you dear, but I must warn you: I will not lie.” “With your honest face, Father, no one will question you.” When they got to customs, she let the priest go ahead of her. The official asked, “Father, do you have anything to declare?” “From the top of my head down to my waist, I have nothing to declare.” The official thought this answer strange, so asked, “And what do you have to declare from your waist to the floor?” “I have a marvelous little instrument designed to be used on a woman, but which is, to date, unused.” Roaring with laughter, the official said, “Go ahead, Father. The Death Stalker Scorpion is kind of a fun name, right? It seems pretty nice. If you’re like the rest of the world and see that name, it sends instant fear. You’d be right to fear it, too. This creature isn’t one to mess with, and it has a severe temper problem.
Uniquely Deadly Animals in the World
Death Stalker Scorpion
Many feel that this scorpion was the possible inspiration for the Scorpion character in Mortal Kombat. Many think it looks like a toy because of its beautiful yellow colouring. Therefore, it never really stands out as a big time threat to some children. This can result in a sting. The poison is lethal, as with many other scorpions. Here are some of the after effects of its sting. Number one, their sting has been known to be incredibly painful. Many say it could be the worst of any sting or animal bite. Some have been known to go into shock as a result. Also, the poison can cut off airways. It can kill you if the antivenom is not given soon. According to experts, it could take as little as a few hours. People have reported joint pain and severe headaches for a number of months after the sting. You’ll find the animal in the dessert and scrubland habitats ranging from North Africa through to the Middle East. Countries where it lives include Algeria, Bahrain, Chad, Egypt, Ethiopia, Libya, Mali, Niger, Somalia, Sudan, Tunisia, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Qatar, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, United Arab Emirates and Yemen. This particular scorpion loves the sand, so be extra careful there. www.oddee.com

A full scale kitchen remodeling, where cabinets are removed and new cabinets installed, can take weeks or months to complete. Compare that with kitchen cabinet refacing. By refacing your cabinets instead of replacing them, you will save time, aggravation, money and wear and tear on other kitchen elements, such as the floor and countertops. With cabinet refacing, the project is often completed within two to four days, and the dust and dirt is kept to a minimum. Working with Granite Transformations couldn’t be less of a hassle. Their expert consultants listen carefully to your needs, and their experienced installers finish the process quickly. They even back it up with a lifetime warranty. Call Granite Transformations today for a free inhome consultation at 403-279-2600 and visit www.granitetransformations.com/calgary to see their incredible variety of styles and colors. Downtown Strathmore has one of the best clothing stores in Strathmore with high quality men’s, women’s, and kid’s clothing and shoes – and you can shop here in town instead of driving to the city, paying for gas, paying for parking, and spending time looking for a parking spot. Downtown Strathmore has a great drug store with some of the nicest staff members and some of the coolest items from hilarious birthday cards, to 3D cake pans, to beautiful jewellery – the list really does go on and on! Need good insurance? Check out downtown and get treated like you matter and are not just a number. On a budget but your kids need clothes? Why buy something new that will shrink and rip for twice the price when you can buy a pre-loved outfit for a fraction of the cost but is still in great shape!
@TNewsy Neighbour
This is why we are having the festival. People say, “I didn’t even know we had a kid’s consignment store.” “I didn’t know we had a computer repair shop.” “I didn’t know we had a place to buy skateboards.” “I didn’t know we had a bakery.” “I didn’t know we had an antique store.” We do. We have that and much, much more. So we are throwing a downtown festival. We are shutting down 6 blocks for 1 day on June 20. There will be kiosks, open doors, happy people, balloons, buskers, entertainment, paintings, excitement, fun… everything.
Do you want to help out? Do you want to showcase your talent? Do you want to have your Strathmore business seen? Ask us more! You can contact us at: 403-478-9114 or denise@thenewsyneighbour.com or aleesha@thenewsyneighbour.com We are helping the Town of Strathmore with their Downtown Revitalisation project because we love this Town and we want to see it, and the businesses within it, succeed! 40 •

Tangier

Tangier is a fascinating Moroccan city. It has many of the things that travelers love – a sense of exotic mystery, interesting history, beautiful vistas, unspoiled beaches and the Kasbah! Tangier can be a bit overwhelming for the first-time visitor to Morocco and, to be honest, even for some hardened travelers. But don’t let that deter you away. My husband and I went to Spain for our honeymoon, and we took a day trip to Tangier. I have to say, it was honestly the highlight of my trip. We were so out of our element there, which made it an amazing experience. We had people warn us about the tour guides; about how they would approach us the second we got off the boat and they would be pushy. People said, “just walk away and don’t say anything”, “they will eventually give up.” So when we got there, they WERE pushy and we did just that – we walked away. That was until we got to the edge of the city and then froze. We were instantly intimidated. We went back and grabbed one of those tour guides and it was the best decision we made. Shaka, our tour guide, took us to places we never would have been comfortable going by ourselves. Tangier is roughly divided into three distinct sections: the old Medina, the Kasbah and the new city. The old city, or “medina,” of Tangier and the Kasbah

were where we spent our day. The medina is a very lively place, its alleyways and paths are filled with jagged stairs, shops, tea-houses, mosques and brothels. Everything is on a hill. They say if you get lost in the medina, to just go uphill, as most exits are uphill. The medina is overflowing; almost all of the buildings are stacked or attached. There are six-dimensional intersections filled with women carrying food on their heads, men smoking their pipes and giant groups of children playing and approaching us to sell us their “knick-knacks”. There is SO much to look at! There are stands full of homemade rugs, spices, brass trays and pots of all kinds, glass lanterns with camel bones as decoration, piles and piles of ceramics, jewelry, food and so much more. We were advised by our tour guide not to take any pictures, and if we did, to make sure we didn’t take pictures of anyone directly. We could deeply offend them. Mind you, I managed to sneak some in. The medina is contained within walls, and is filled with miles of winding, narrow, endless paths in between the buildings that are all going up and down hill. It was hot and we were exhausted, but it was completely worth it. Seeing the way the Muslims in the medina lived their lives, was not anything like the life Todd and I are used to. We were so completely out of our element, especially since we were also there on a Friday, the Muslim weekly “holy day”. A Muslim prays five times a day, not

only on Fridays. But Friday is the day of congregational prayer. So we were right amongst everyone, every time the azan (prayer call) from the mosques happened. If you are within the hearing distance, you go to the mosque. The prayer calls were loud, I’m sure everyone could hear it. You can imagine what the streets were like when that happened. It was fascinating. We were even brave enough to try and look in one of the mosques at one point, but were quickly turned away. We had lunch in the medina as well. It breaks my heart that I do not remember the name of the restaurant that we went to, but I sure do remember the experience. We were treated like royalty and the food was spectacular. I had the traditional couscous, chicken and olive Tagine. It was filled with cinnamon and raisins as well as vegetables, chicken and couscous. It was amazing. We asked the server to bring us the most expensive bottle of wine he had in the restaurant, to show our gratitude for how well he treated us and how good the food was, and the bottle of wine came to $250 dirham or £25. After lunch, we went to the Kasbah. It is looming over the medina. It is the old fortress and citadel that protected the medina. It is the highest point in the old city and standing up there you could see amazing views of the ocean and Spain. We also stood in front of the old Sultan’s palace. We didn’t go in, but seeing the outside at the moment was good enough for us. There was so much more we wanted to do in Tangier, but our day was cut short because the winds were picking up so much that they were going to cancel the return of the ferry back to Spain until the next day. is so much we didn’t get to do. The beaches are incredible; I would have loved to make the time to go into the Kasbah museum. Cap Spartel marks Africa’s northwest tip. This is where the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean meat. This is only 11km west of Tangier and there is an incredible lighthouse there. You can see a picture of it in Kaleidoscope’s advertisement above. Morocco as a whole is a place I have on my bucket list. I really encourage you to do some research beyond just Tangier. Morocco has everything from dune-surfing or camel trekking through the desert, to admiring the Roman ruins, visiting the beautiful Rif Mountains, or spending time amongst the vendors, traditional musicians, snake charmers and random acrobats in the vibrant city of Marrakesh. If you are looking for a very exotic travel destination, I would say Morocco would fit the bill! Aleesha Gosling

You are your child’s best toy, so remember to take some time each day to play with your child. While playing with your child, you will be helping them to learn new things about themselves and the people and places around them. • You can build play into your everyday activities. Make funny faces in the mirror when brushing your teeth. • Let your child help with daily chores like vacuuming the floor, setting the table and digging in the garden. • Read to your child every day. Kids love to see their parents be silly so don’t be afraid to use funny voices when reading a story or talking about what’s going on in the pictures. Kids also love to have their favourite book reread to them over and over again. • Decrease screen time and check out local concerts, plays and community activities for your entertainment. • Take time to explore outside and see what’s happening out there each season. Let kids experience the snow, wind and rain and check out the bugs, plants and puddles. For more ideas on how to build play in to everyday activities, check out www.region.peel.on.ca . Your local Parent Link and library are also great resources for weekly activities and free play.

Flames vs. Oilers!
I had a listener ask me a very intriguing question recently. Whose NHL future is brighter?
s
rt Spo
The Calgary Flames or the Edmonton Oilers?
Until the Oilers won the draft lottery last month and guaranteed themselves the rights to Connor McDavid, the answer was pretty simple! Now, it’s a little more clouded. NHL managers, scouts and fans know a player like McDavid only comes around once every 10 to 15 years. Wayne Gretzky takes it one step further. He says McDavid is the best player to come into the NHL in 30 years! For an organization moving into a brand new arena, that has mismanaged their way to 9 straight non playoff appearances, the lottery windfall couldn’t have come at a better time. The haters will claim the Oilers don’t deserve such a gem as they have squandered a golden opportunity to build around first overall picks Taylor Hall, Ryan Nugent Hopkins and Nail Yakupov. Personally, I think it’s great the next generational player has landed in our province! He had no chance of coming to Calgary, so it may as well be Edmonton. After watching the Flames and the Canucks battle in the first round of the playoffs, I can’t help but think how much fun it would be to see the Flames and the Oilers in a similar situation. Here in Southern Alberta, we know the Flames are trending in the right direction. It’s time for the Oilers to do their part and if it takes McDavid to turn their fortunes around, I am okay with that! I think all hockey fans in this province would love to see the Battle of Alberta return to the glory days of the 80’s when Flames head coach Badger Bob Johnson knew he had a mountain to climb. Hey, I am the first to admit, it was fun watching the Flames beat the Oilers five times during the regular season. But really, no fan in their right mind likes a one sided rivalry. I also love the fact that McDavid is not going to be in the Eastern division like Sidney Crosby. We will now get to see him on a regular basis at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Just because McDavid is going to land in Edmonton, it doesn’t mean the Oilers are going to return to their dynasty era of the 80’s. Crosby has been in the NHL for 10 years and he has one Stanley Cup on his resume. In a salary cap world, NHL teams have to limit their mistakes, make solid business decisions, good hockey decisions and place a premium on development. These are areas the Oilers have failed on in the last number of years. Former Flames General Manager Craig Button has a great formula for successful teams. He calls it the 4 - 2 - 1 - 2. In a salary cap world, the best teams in the league need 4 solid defensemen, 2 elite centre, 1 outstanding goalie and 2 extra world class forwards. These 9 players will take up over 65 to 70 percent of your salary cap. Obviously, you still need a strong supporting cast and that is where development and good hockey decisions come into play. Look at the Flames model. Mark Giordano, TJ Brodie, Kris Russell and Dennis Wideman. As a Flames fan, you would feel a little better if the captain wasn’t hurt but kudos to Deryk Engelland for stepping up his game. 19 year old Sean Monahan has turned into that elite centre with Mikael Backlund filling the number 2 spot until rookie Sam Bennett takes over. Pick your poison between the pipes with Jonas Hiller and Kari Ramo as Joni Orto and Jon Gillies are waiting in the wings. The two extra forwards, are Jiri Hulder and Johnny Gaudreau. The future does look bright for the Calgary Flames! Under this model, it’s very clear why the Oilers have not had success. Their four highest paid defensemen are Andrew Ference, Justin Schultz, Mark Fayne and Nikita Nikiten. Good luck with that! The goaltending is not good enough and they only have one elite centre in Ryan Nugent Hopkins. Sure, they have the extra forwards in Hall, Eberle and Yakapov but it’s very clear this organization did not have a clear plan or focus at the draft table. It will be interesting to see what the Oilers do in the off season now that Bob Nicholson has taken over hockey operations from Kevin Lowe. The New York Islanders took advantage of teams in salary cap trouble last season, landing two top defensemen in Johnny Boychuk and Nick Leddy, the Oilers will need to pull off similar magic. The Oilers do have a first round pick from the Pittsburgh Penguins and an early second round pick in a deep draft that will likely be used to acquire a goalie and a defenseman. The concern is whether or not GM Craig MacTavish and Senior VP Hockey Operations Scott Howson are the right people to get the job done. I am not stupid enough to predict the Oilers will be a The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

www.phdautomotive.com playoff team next season, but let’s not lose sight that three of the worst teams in the league during the 2013 - 2014 season (Flames/ Islanders/Canucks) made the post season tournament this year. I have been wrong before! Like so many at the start of the NHL season, I gave the Flames no chance of making the NHL playoffs. During their 8 game losing streak in December, I was smug saying ‘I told you so’. Heck,
I am now a believer and I am done with the bold “no chance” predictions!
even Brian Burke has his doubts. “With the parity in today’s NHL, a lot of teams can’t recover from that sort of streak,” the Flames president of hockey operations told Mark Stephen and myself on
Sportstalk on Newstalk 770. I started to believe the Flames were a legitimate playoff team in February and I proudly declared on the air they would be in the playoffs. Of course, that changed the middle of March when captain and team leader Mark Giordano suffered a season ending injury. “No chance,” I spouted! “The dream was dead and this team would not be able to recover.” The Flames have taken pride in proving the doubters like myself wrong all season long. Burke told us a great story on Sportstalk how he called Sportnet analyst Nick Kypreos at the start of the season after Kypreos predicted the Flames would be in the McDavid sweep-

stakes. “I was mad,” says Burke. “I know Nick, he played for me in Hartford and I wanted to tell him why he was wrong. I told him we have one of the most mobile defensive units in the league and people or underestimating our goaltending. It’s better than most people think. There were a lot of doubters but we all believed in the organization and more importantly, the players believed.” As it turns out, Burke was bang on with that assessment and with the emergence of young forwards like Sean Monahan, Johnny Gaudreau, Micheal Ferland, Josh Jouris, Marcus Granlund and now Sam Bennett, the team is back in the playoffs in year 2 of the re-build. Are the Flames going to win the Stanley Cup (I am writing this article as the Flames and Canucks are still battling in round one)? Probably not, but I am now a believer and I am done with the bold “no chance” predictions!

Have you ever heard of brain science?
It’s very interesting how they can now prove that your mind controls pretty much everything in your life, including your health. Well, to me that’s a no brainer!! The chaotic networks of billions of electrically pulsating neurons in our skulls have perplexed scientists for centuries. Yet in the last 10 years, our understanding of this mysterious organ has exploded. Prodigious advances in diagnostic and molecular techniques have shown us how complex the brain actually is, and scientists are just beginning to figure out how these revelations translate into everyday behaviour, let alone disease.

Fairy Gardens
L
Landscaping projects with your children can be a lot of fun. What child does not love playing in the dirt? All winter long I ponder what new project I’m going to tackle in the spring, and although my children are no longer little and have lives of their own, over the years they helped me with many landscaping and gardening projects. Helping mom and dad with outdoor projects gives children a sense of accomplishment – like a job well done! Last year I built a few raised box gardens and this year I’m going to move them all after realizing my vegetables either got too much sunlight or too little, so my first chore on the list this year is going to be to move them all (strong sons may come in handy for this project). There is going to be a lot of dirt required to be moved!!
I’ve been thinking about it and I would make one of my smaller boxes into a “Fairy Garden”. The last time I walked through my favourite

craft store, I noticed that they had an entire aisle devoted to adorable items you could use in a fairy garden. I wanted to buy at least one of each thing. Fairy Gardens are a magical space for children to play and a lovely addition to any garden. Making one is quite simple and quick, but will bring hours of family enjoyment. The real imagination and magic comes alive when choosing the small details to place in your garden…with so many fantastic possibilities, your garden will always be changing and evolving! There are all sorts of little interesting items you can use for your Fairy Garden, like tiny buildings, castles and houses and you can find all sorts of cool little treasures at garage sales and even cute bridges and mini pagodas in the fish aisle at your local pet store – and don’t forget the dollar store or general store! Rocks, pebbles, glass stones and gravel work well for pathways, dry river beds, and they add interest to your garden. Fill up the empty space in the bottom of the planter with

upside down (empty) plastic cat buckets (with holes drilled for drainage). Then, a piece of particle board was cut to size to make a “floor” for the fairy garden box. Place weed-block garden fabric on top of the particle board base and fill it with potting soil mix. Smooth it all out and start your “Fairy Land”. The fairies need a home too! Use your imagination; I can hardly wait to create my own Fairy Land! When choosing plants for your Fairy Garden, be mindful of the scale you are after. You want it to look like a miniature garden. Use moss as the main ground cover and let your imagination run wild as you choose plants that you think might attract the fairies in your neighbourhood. A small tree sets the scale of the garden and makes for that miniature feeling. If your garden is in a smaller container, a shrub will have the same effect as a tree. Also, keep in mind the colour combinations – silvers, light greens, dark greens, browns – use as many colours as possible, as it adds texture and interest to the Fairy Garden. Another consideration when choosing your plants is to make sure all the combinations you choose like the same amount of sun and water. If you are going to be using moss, remember that moss likes sun to part shade and lots of water… make sure you choose other plants that like the same. If you are going for a dessert garden appeal, pebbles, rocks and various cacti look wonderful, but keep in mind that too many prickles may deter your little one from playing in his or her garden. Water your Fairy Garden well…and then add your little fairy and gnome pieces in place. A bench, a table and a chair, an arbor or tiny little fences make great additions. You could even have a little pond, using a small bowl.
Fairy Gardens are a magical space for children to play and a lovely addition to any garden. Nothing would make me happier than to know I had fairies living in my garden! Your children will have magical dreams thinking and pondering the idea of fairies in their own backyard.
There is nothing wrong with pondering the possibilities of magic in your life – it could happen. Kathryn Hartwell References: mothershome.com, pinkandgreenmama.blogspot, themagiconions.com and happinessishomemade.net
Be prepared for Fairy Garden making to be an all-day project! Playing in the dirt and arranging and rearranging the layout a hundred times is a big part of the fun! You can also use a small crate or barrel and make this into an event. Friends and neighbours could come over to get in on the Fairy Garden making-action. The magic of a fairy garden is in the addition of all your own personal teeny details! I am sure every single person reading this article has tiny little figurines and things hidden in your junk drawer you can use to make your own magical garden.

But, there are thousands to choose from! So how you know which ones are right for your yard? The first thing to look at is how much sun or shade you have and how much room you have for them to grow. Do you have a special colour scheme you want to use or just a kaleidoscope of colours (that’s my yard)? Some of these choices below may help you with your decisions.

The following perennials are for sunny conditions: Sedum “Autumn Joy” is a great perennial for flowers later in the season. It blooms late summer and into fall. It is extremely drought resistant. In fact, it doesn’t even like a lot of water. Lavender ‘Hidcote’ is not only a low maintenance perennial plant, but also is drought resistant and has a great fragrance. Cut off lots of the lavender stems, tie them together with a pretty ribbon and you have a wonderful, fragrant bunch of flowers. Dry them and they will last quite a long time. Coneflower becomes larger and more beautiful as time goes on. Butterfly Bush resembles a shrub in that it gets much larger than many other perennial plants. It doesn’t require a lot of water, has a long period of bloom, and attracts – yep! Butterflies! Yarrow comes in many colours, except maybe purples or blues. It’s very easy to care for. I grow this myself and it is so low maintenance!

If you are just getting started in a new yard this year, your choice of perennials is a very important decision. The best part is, you only have to plant them once and they just keep coming back every year bigger and more beautiful!
Hostas are known for their attractive foliage. And there are so many varieties... large, small, wide leaves, narrow leaves, solid green, solid blue (different shades!), variegated, etc. It’s hard to imagine a shade garden without some hostas. You can even create just a hosta garden using many different ones, but plant them in groups for maximum impact. Wild Bleeding Heart are low, delicate shade perennials that bloom on and off most of the season. You can choose plants that have white or pink flowers. The foliage of these shade perennials is feathery and very pretty. These plants appreciate some water during very dry periods. Turtleheads are a rather showy fall flowering perennial with pretty pink flowers. It’s on the tall side and is less common than many others. If you are looking for late season blooms, this is definitely one to consider. Hakonechloa are like grasses but just can’t seem to find one for your shady area, this is it...a grass that does well in the shade.

Travelling through southern Alberta with its rolling prairies, when you enter Writing-On-Stone Provincial Park, you are suddenly transported to a unique time and place with a dramatically different landscape that adds to the wonder of this beautiful area. The power of earth, water, air and fire are evident as they altered everything they touched over time. The possibility of a minority government is being bantered about, producing the possibility of an unexpected change to Alberta’s landscape if it occurs. A minority has never held office in Alberta’s 110-year history. Twenty-eight general elections led to only four
60 •

parties forming governments, all with overwhelming majorities. This is a uniquely Albertan trend. In addition, none of these parties ever returned to power after being voted out of office. A different atmosphere was evident throughout the Alberta 2015 Election campaign. At the time of this writing, it is unknown if it resulted in a shift in Alberta’s political landscape; however, it is evident that the elements were at work.
Earth
Globally, the world is different. Four generations are now eligible to vote – Generation Z, Millennials, Middle-aged Gen X and the Baby Boomer cohort. How these generations communicate is in sharp contrast to the past, a fact to be mindful of or volatility is likely to occur moving forward. An engaged, vocal populace does not appear to be the demographic the PCs anticipated.
Air
Clean air is in huge demand. People everywhere want access to unpolluted air. Truth and transparency are major issues in political campaigns where freedom of speech and democratic processes exist. Arrogance is unacceptable and leadership accountability is paramount. This is key to establishing trust.
Water
It may be water under the bridge, but many Albertans are indicating that although the actions of PC Premiers and MLAs are in The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

the past and cannot be controlled or undone, they are no longer willing to accept, forgive and forget. Water brings the ability to cleanse systems of inefficiencies, which there appear to be no lack of.
At Coldwell, we are real people serving real people.
Fire
Fire utterly destroys or refines. Fighting fire on two fronts is exhausting. With the NDP on the left and the WRP on the right for the first time in 44 years, a PC cohort faces a battle on two fronts and it is hot in the middle. The fact that three parties are running close is evidence that Alberta politics are undergoing alteration. A willingness to change strengthens us; however, it takes a leap of faith to take advantage of opportunities that exist during uncertain times. The engagement and news during Alberta Vote 2015 provided the best political conversations I’ve participated in over a long time. I’m looking forward with anticipation to May 5th and a refreshed political landscape for Alberta. “An unpredictable House is a more effective House. It’s a good thing if perhaps the Government cannot always tell what is going to happen next.” - UK House of Commons Speaker John Bercow. “The Newsy Neighbour apologizes for the unintentional and unfortunate ad placement error in the April 2015 issue of the magazine. It was never our intention to associate Marcy Field with any particular political party or infer her endorsement. This was a publishing error on our part.”
Wheatland Home Support The Home Support Program is provided through Wheatland Family and Community Support Services (WFCSS). It is a subsidized program by the Provincial Government and helps seniors and disabled people stay in their homes longer by providing general house cleaning and other related duties. We provide routine house up-keep: vacuum, dust, wash floors, clean bathrooms and help with laundry as needed. Occasional heavy cleaning may also be available: wash walls, windows, clean behind fridge and stove. Shopping for Shut-Ins -- pickup groceries and prescriptions -- is also offered on a case by case basis. If you have a need for companion care we can accompany seniors and/or persons with disabilities to appointments and we can provide relief to families by spending brief periods in the day with seniors or special needs member in a companion role. This program has been available in Wheatland County, including Strathmore since 1978. In 2013, Strathmore separated from Wheatland FCSS and now operates its own Home Support Program. A Home Assessment visit is done to determine each client’s needs, inform the client of costs based on income, and set up a mutually agreed upon schedule. If you or a family member is interested in the program please give us a call! Wheatland County – including Villages: 403-934-5335 Strathmore: 403-934-9090

Camping with Sherlock Holmes
Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson went camping. They pitched their tent under the stars, went inside, and went to sleep. Sometime in the middle of the night, Holmes woke Watson up and said: “Watson, look up at the sky, and tell me what you see.” Watson replied: “I see millions and millions of stars.” Holmes said: “And what do you deduce from that?” Watson replied: “Well, if there are millions of stars, and if even a few of those have planets, it’s quite likely there are some planets like Earth out there. And if there are a few planets like Earth out there, there might also be life.” And Holmes said: “Watson, you idiot, it means that somebody stole our tent.”

Painting Your Very Own
Mur
al
Have you ever considered painting a mural on one of your walls? It is something I ponder quite often, but think to myself, “What a disaster this could be! You’re going to hate it after you’re done and feel all inadequate and it will make you grouchy for days, so why bother? Besides, I have two amazing artist in the family!” Mind you, my two amazing artists are too busy to come and paint a mural for dear old mom (guilt trip here)!

thenewsyneighbour.com
The problem is, it’s one of those things I just can’t get off my mind; after all, what is the worst that could happen? I could just paint over it – right? What would I paint and what wall and what room? There are so many decisions to make, making this process a challenge. Now I just have to do it! There are mural techniques I have investigated for you, so this is where I would start. First, you must design a mural. That sounds easy enough! Look through books, check out Pinterest, visit the library, go for a walk, look at old photos or just think of a theme. Next is the tricky part: getting that drawing onto your wall. You will need to enlarge the image using an art projector and a pencil. Now that you have your pencil outline, you can start the underpainting. The underpainting consists of large blocks of colour, over which you will paint more detail later. Depending on the colours in your image, you can use interior household paint for large areas of colour (blue skies, green fields, etc.). (Check out Home Hardware’s paint selection!) Next, sponging is a good way to create the sense of tex

ture in a mural, such as clouds in the sky or leaves on a tree. You can also sponge a colour on top of another colour to create more of a sense of depth and interest, rather than leaving an area as a flat, single block of colour. Sponging is also one of the handy mural techniques for quickly filling in large areas with colour. To sponge, first wet your sponge and squeeze out the excess water. Dip your damp sponge lightly into your paint, and then lightly blot the sponge on some paper towels. You don’t want your sponge to be too loaded with paint, or it will ruin the effect. Stippling is a popular mural techniques for creating detail without worrying about smooth blending. For instance, if you’re painting a green field, you can bring it to life by stippling other colours into the green. Here’s how to do it: apply a green underpainting, then after it is dry, paint a thin coat of a different colour over top of it (for example, a yellow-green or a darker green). While the paint is still wet, dab the wet paint with a dry stippling brush and dab the new colour around until the new layer is all stippled. If done correctly, the new colour will no longer looked “brushed on” and some of the underpainting will show through. You can repeat this mural technique as many times as you need (with as many colours as you want) until your desired area is covered. This is a nice mural technique for creating the illusion of a field alive with shades of green, dappled in yellow sunlight. Stenciling is fairly simple and anyone can do it – you don’t need any special art skills. You can buy stencils in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, from alphabet letters to farm animals to wildlife, trees, planets – you name it! To stencil, use a painter’s
tape to adhere the stencil to the wall. With one hand, hold the stencil in place and with your other hand, paint in the colour. You need to be cautious around the edges, because you don’t want too much paint build-up on the edges when you lift the stencil away. Use a sweeping, circular motion when applying paint near the edges to avoid build up. You can also use a stencil as an outline, and paint in details later. For example, you can follow the stippling mural technique described above to stencil the image of an alligator in a solid shade of green. Then remove the stencil and paint in details, such as eyes, teeth, and bumpy skin. There is also antiquing, if you want to make your mural look old, emanating a sense of history into the room. To antique a wall, mix your desired colour (usually sienna or umber to create an aged look) with an acrylic glazing medium, using the ratio of 4 to 5 parts glaze to 1 part paint. Brush the mixture onto your wall and quickly - while the paint is still wet - run a clean rag or cheesecloth over the paint to spread it around. For an added effect, you can use this technique to add even darker colour to the corners and edges of the wall. TIPS: Properly prepare your wall. Choose the right mural paint and the right brushes. There are a ton of internet sites with information and videos to give you the courage to actually paint your own mural! I feel like a pro already! I wish you all good luck and may the mural gods be with you. Kathryn Hartwell References: art-is-fun.com and wallmurals123.com

It’s About Time… According to some homespun folklore, the time spent on chores may be good for the character, but really – working your fingers to the bone results in bony fingers. We are all somewhat aware of how developments in technology have freed up time from the drudge jobs. Fun things like beating clothes with a rock down at the stream, washing pots and dishes after heating enough water are long gone. There was an upside – we didn’t have to worry about mattress comfort or sleep problems; exhaustion is a great sleep aid. Of course, waking up feeling like you’ve spent the night in a cement mixer might mean that in spite of exhaustion, you needed a new mattress (or in the old days, at least change the straw).
The Dishwasher
New efficient dishwashers really do a better job than we can do by hand. 1) It cleans, sanitizes better, all while using much less water and energy. 2) Do not ‘pre-rinse’ – just scrape off & load. With hard water, do use rinse aid. 3) There are cycle choices for different loads. New dishwashers don’t just beat on the dishes with lots of water and detergent. Cycle selection and letting the dishwasher sense the soil level minimizes water and energy use while efficiently cleaning your dishes. New dishwashers can take more time to do a load, but it’s not your time. You can do something more thrilling than washing
dishes. Important Disclaimer: Those couples or fathers & daughters who use washing dishes as quality time should not take this as reducing conversational time. You can always go for a walk, do yardwork, etc.
The Washing Machine
With just a little planning, you can take advantage of amazing time saving features on new high efficiency washers. 1) High capacity means larger loads, which equals fewer loads overall. 2) Different cycles (including pre-soak and stain removal) for different fabrics & loads. Let the washer do the preliminary work, plus it will handle those time-consuming ‘hand washables’ and delicates for you. 3) Wrinkle reducing features. You don’t have to be right there at the end of a cycle. These features can maintain freshness and reduced wrinkles for you. All this while using much less water and energy, plus no bony fingers… Knowing the capabilities of our appliances and what works (or doesn’t work) can better utilize your time. Your local independent appliance retailer/servicer understands appliances and the best ways to use them. They know it’s not about hype – it’s about knowledge. Keep being an aware consumer, have fun with some of that increased time and increase your knowledge (and interest) by checking out: www.scientificamerican.com. For a good read, remember Astrophysicist Carl Sagan? He wrote the book ‘Contact’. He also wrote a very good and possibly very applicable book to today: The Demon Haunted World – Science as a Candle. With the current real estate market, it is very important more now than ever to make sure your home stands above the crowd. The majority of people that are looking to purchase a new home for either renovation or living purposes go online to see what’s in their desired area. This is the potential client’s first impression, this is their deciding moment on whether or not they are going to give your property a second look in person. To ensure your home shines and brings in those viewings, see below for some pointers:
De-personalization
This is first and foremost what needs to happen. This includes all family pictures, anything specific to taste and/or is not something that would generally appeal to the masses. You need to ensure your space is neutral to anyone that will be viewing, regardless of gender, views, etc. When someone is viewing your home, the

goal is to make them feel comfortable and not feel like they are intruding.
Clear Floor space
All small items should be stored away to open up the floor space. Such items may include shoes racks, Rubbermaid storage containers, a water cooler, etc. This increases clear site lines and flow in the space. Don’t forget mats and oversized area rugs, as this is also a great way to demonstrate the condition of the flooring and by being in great condition solidifies value of home to the viewer.
Kitchen & Bathrooms
These areas are the key selling feature for any home. If you have invested in upgrades for these rooms, then this needs to be the forefront of the viewing. The best way to achieve this is to clear all surfaces and show as much useable counter space as possible. Store all counter top appliances away and ensure above cabinet surfaces are also clear. This could read as a little stark, but it is simply about showcasing the space, potential and/or upgraded details, a fresh vase of flowers on the counter/island and a few decorative canisters is all that is needed.
home and to open houses is this: you want whoever is viewing your home to not point out deterrents, which lessens the chance of an offer. All small repairs should be complete because potential buyers are looking! Your home should feel comfortable, not over crowded, it should lend the ability to the viewer to visualize themselves and their belongings in the space and become excited about the property!
