A SHORT LOVE STORY A man and a woman who had never met before, but who were both married to other people, found themselves assigned to the same sleeping room on a Trans-continental train. Though initially embarrassed and uneasy over sharing a room, they were both very tired and fell asleep quickly, he in the upper berth and she in the lower. At 1:00 AM, the man leaned down and gently woke the woman saying, ‘I’m sorry to bother you, but would you be willing to reach into the closet to get me a second blanket? I’m awfully cold.’ ‘I have a better idea.’ she replied, ‘Just for tonight, let’s pretend that we’re married.’ ‘Wow! That’s a great idea!’, he exclaimed. ‘Good,’ she replied . . . ‘ So get your own darn blanket.’ After a moment of silence . . . he farted. The End

Jock Talk with Jock Wilson

Should Flames Fasttrack Feaster? If you ever listen to my radio show on AM770 CHQR you certainly know my position on Calgary Flames general manager Darryl Sutter. How or why he still has the top hockey job in this organization is a mystery? Flames president Ken King would like us all to believe that “the Darryl” has an opened ended contract with no fixed term. Personally, I don’t believe it as it just wouldn’t make good business sense under the Alberta labour laws and I have been told by an NHL source that the league would likely not allow such a contact for a person in this position. Regardless of the term left on Sutter’s contract, I think it’s very safe to speculate that Darryl is walking a very thin line. A series of questionable trades, bad contracts with no movement clauses and a poor draft record has left the organization in a fragile state. It’s no wonder Jay Feaster was brought in this summer as Darryl’s assistant and the new GM in waiting. Here’s the dilemma. Is Jay Feaster really that much of an upgrade or would this just be a lateral move by the Flames organization? On the surface Feaster and Sutter are the complete opposites. The one thing I will never do is question the passion or the drive Sutter has for the game. As a player, a coach or a manager, Sutter is a man who lived and breathed the game, walking or sleeping. Feaster, on the other hand, is a lawyer. After earning a degree in political science at Susquehanna University and his law degree from Georgetown, Feaster got his start in the hockey business working for Hersey Entertainment and Resorts Co. HERCO happened to own the Hersey Bears and although he never played the game, Feaster was a long time hockey fan and he was hooked.

Darryl Sutter gets and takes way too much credit for the Flames 2004 run to the Stanley Cup final. Granted, he did a nice job as the coach and hit a home run with a goalie, but this was a team constructed by former GM’s Craig Button and Al Coates. Jay Feaster was the GM of the Stanley Cup winners in 2004 however the core of that team was constructed by former GM Rick Dudley. Jay Feaster’s true legacy in Tampa Bay is Steven Stamkos. He transformed a Stanley Cup champion into the worst team in the league. Sure the Lightening made the playoffs from 2003 to 2007 during Feaster’s reign, but in his attempt to keep the team competitive he traded assets for immediate help. With a lack of assets, a poor draft record, questionable trades (see Brad Richards) and unmanageable contracts, the Lightening quickly went from a contender to a pretender! Does that remind you of any other organization? After dealing with Darryl Sutter for the past 7 years, Jay Feaster really is a breath of fresh air! He’s personable, he’s friendly, he’s intelligent and he doesn’t scowl. As an assistant general manager, I would say he’s perfect. He just wouldn’t be my choice to replace Darryl Sutter. About Jock Wilson: Jock has been involved in the Calgary sport media scene for close to 30 years. He hosts the Calgary Stampeder football broadcasts on QR77 and is the cohost of Sportstalk with Mark Stephen from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm.

Despite the different roads these two individuals took to the National Hockey League, their track records as managers are eerily similar. www.thenewsyneighbor.com

From the Publishers NOVEMBER 2010 Well, the bad news is, it’s November and it has been snowing for two days now. I don’t know about you but I just don’t feel we had our fair share of hot days this year, and now we are coming into a LaNina weather pattern, which typically means lots and lots of snow this winter. There is just no justice when it comes to Mother Nature, no sense of fair play or consideration – like a box of chocolates – you don’t know what your going to get! And, that’s just the way it’s going to be. Sooooo, let’s make the best of it – the late Gilda Radner (1946-1989) said it the best “ Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what’s going to happen next”. But, the good news is this issue is our biggest magazine yet – with 72 pages. So many people want to send us articles and advertise we have once again had to add pages to our once little Newsy Neighbour. You have to check out Jock Wilson’s new column on page 9 - he says it as he sees’s it, that’s for sure. And, also new is “Luscious Joys” on page 34-35 – send in your luscious recipes and “My favorite, fabulous, fantastic and fun stuff” page 38-39, Laughter – For your Health page 25 and lots of other interesting reading throughout the magazine. Make your November fun and interesting – you could always curl up on the couch and read The Newsy Neighbour that’s a great way to expand your mind! Kathryn Hartwell, Aleesha Gosling & Denise Geremia

I made enough money to pay off my equipment and now the company makes enough to pay for its own advertising. I'll start taking a wage this year. I have to admit that I am a little surprised myself at how successful advertising in Newsy has been. ~ Tannis, Exclusively Mobile The Newsy Neighbor is published 12 times a year, printed by Central Web and distributed by Canada Post, Trader Publications and Gallant Distribution. Dear Newsy, I just wanted to thank you for posting some information on those running for Town Council and Mayor in the Newsy Neighbour. I don’t read the newspapers, and it was great to be able to read a bit about some of the people running in your magazine so I went into the polls with a bit of education! I heard that we had a record turnout for voting this year, and it’s also the first year the Newsy Neighbour advertised the election. Coincidence? I think not! Julia Dear Newsy Neighbour girls, I tried the recipe for the carrot cake and let me tell you: YUM!!! I try all of your recipes and I love getting them every month. Please keep them coming!! Janice Dear Newsy Neighbour, I love your pet section. I’m a big animal lover and I love seeing a magazine that advertises so much about the care and wellbeing for animals. Please keep it up!! Georgina Dear Newsy, I was just wondering if you allow people to post “happy birthday” comments in your magazine? My son’s birthday is in December and I’d love to put an ad with a photo of him in the magazine to celebrate his birthday. If you do do this, how much does it cost? Sincerely, Beverly Do you want to be a part of The Newsy Neighbour? Share your thoughts, stories, photos, comments or ideas and we may publish them. Dr. Elizabeth Robinson ~ Dr. Leanne Lesniak NEW PATIENTS WELCOME www.crystalridgedental.com #11 - 55 Wheatland Trail, Strathmore GRANDPARENTS 1. She was in the bathroom, putting on her makeup, under the watchful eyes of her young granddaughter, as she’d done many times before. After she applied her lipstick and started to leave, the little one said, “But Grandma, you forgot to kiss the toilet paper good-bye!” I will probably never put lipstick on again without thinking about kissing the toilet paper good-bye.... 2. My young grandson called the other day to wish me Happy Birthday. He asked me how old I was, and I told him, 62. My grandson was quiet for a moment, and then he asked, “Did you start at 1?”

BODY PARTS NOVEMBER ~ THE HUMAN MOUTH Our first Body Parts article was published in May of 2010 and the concept behind the articles are to share how important the parts of the body are to us. We walk around every day just taking for granted our most incredible body without even thinking about the miracle we hold. Perhaps when you think about your precious body you may want to keep better care of it. Using our sense of taste makes us so HAPPY! We love to eat, which is probably why we have almost 10,000 taste buds inside our mouths. At birth the only fully developed organ is the tongue. It is needed for sucking. For the first two months of life our mouth is our primary organ used for survival, expressing ourselves and to explore our new world. The various parts of the mouth have to make numerous finely controlled movements in order that we may eat and speak. These movements are all brought about by the many muscles that lie under the mucous membrane, which are attached to the skeleton. Just to make your day - according to scientists, the number of species of microorganisms that permanently reside in the human mouth is 200-500. Of those, only fifty are named and studied. They have various looks: balloons, bacilli, those that look like corn on the cob, bottle brushes, spirals, zippers, and more – Yuck! Sorry about that! Inside our mouth of course is our tongue, which helps us to talk and is used to push food around the mouth so we can swallow it. The tongue contains taste buds, which detect sweet, salt, sour, and bitter tastes. What we call taste also includes the smell of the food in our mouths. Food is pushed to the pharynx (back of the mouth) by the tongue. The epiglottis closes the entrance to the windpipe so that food does not go down the wrong way which we all know happens sometimes – like on a first date or some other important occasion, and coughing forces the food back up the windpipe to unblock it. The oesophagus (your throat) has circular muscles which can contract (peristalsis) to force food down into the stomach and since food has to be slippery to swallow, our saliva contains mucin, which is a slimy protein. Yuck! The salivary gland produces saliva. It also contains an enzyme called salivary amylase, which turns starch into a sugar called maltose. We do not chew our food long enough to complete the digestion of starch which is why the pancreas makes pancreatic amylase to finish the job. Now you know why you need a pancreas! Enough about that – now the mouth is the first part of the gastrointestinal tract. The lips, cheeks, floor of the mouth,

Page 14

The Newsy Neighbour

www.thenewsyneighbor.com

The mouth contains the teeth and tongue and receives secretions from the salivary glands. It performs three main functions, which have to do with digestion, breathing, and speech. The mouth, like many organs in the human body, is a hollow cavity. The part in front of the teeth is called the vestibule, while the part behind is the mouth itself. The floor of the mouth is formed from sheets of muscle tissue, which are attached to the inner surface of the jawbone, or mandible. The sidewalls are formed by the cheeks, which are sufficiently flexible to allow the mouth to open and close. I will never look at my mouth the same!

Unique Gifts, Art, Carvings, Jewelry, and More!

The palate, a thin sheet of tissue, which separates the mouth from the nasal cavities, forms the roof of the mouth. At the back, the cavity of the mouth joins up with the pharynx. Except for the teeth, the whole of the inner surface of the mouth is lined by mucous membrane; the back goes on to line the gastrointestinal tract, and the front it is folded over to form the lips. How romantic! The lips and cheeks help hold food in the mouth and keep it in place for chewing. They are also used in the formation of words for speech. The lips contain numerous sensory receptors that are useful for judging the temperature and texture of foods. The palate forms the roof of the mouth and separates the mouth from the nasal cavity. The palate consists of two quite different parts. The anterior (front) portion is supported by bone. The posterior (back) portion skeletal muscle and connective tissue. Posteriorly, the soft palate ends in a projection called the uvula. During swallowing, the soft palate and uvula move upward to direct food away from the nasal cavity and into the oropharynx. Wow, have you ever even given a thought to the process of eating?! And what about all those teeth? For a human, a complete set of deciduous (primary) teeth contain 20 teeth. There are 32 teeth in a complete permanent (secondary) set. The shape of each tooth type corresponds to the way it handles food. At the front are eight chisel-shaped cutting teeth, or incisors. Behind these are the four canine teeth, and behind these are eight premolars and 12 molars. My goodness there are so many parts to form a mouth – what a beautiful part of our body. When you think about it, the mouth is probably the first thing we see when we meet people – the first thing we hear, for sure. Think about your mouth next time you use it and remember you would be nobody without it.

FOOTBALL

It’s November already, Brrrrr – winter is coming - yuk, it’s also the last month of Canadian Football. But, the most exciting news is that in Edmonton on the 28th of the month the 98th Grey Cup will be played. The 1st Grey Cup game game was played on December 4, 1909, between the University of Toronto Varsity Blues and the Toronto Parkdale Canoe Club. The University of Toronto won the game, 26-6. The Grey Cup is the second oldest trophy in North American professional sport after the Stanley Cup. The Calgary Stampeders have won the Grey Cup championship six times, most recently in 2008. Did you know that the first Stampers team was formed in 1945 and in 1948 they became the only CFL team as of 2010 to achieve a perfect season with a record of 12-0 and they won the Grey Cup with a victory over the Ottawa Rough Riders at Toronto's Varsity Stadium. I guess with a record of 12-0 they were destined to win. Football is exciting and watching football with your family can be a really fun time to share together. We normally always have a Grey Cup Party - we make special football food, invite a few friends over, make up a football pool – (it’s even more fun watching the game if there is a possibility of winning a few dollars) and make a really fun day of it. The Stamps have had a pretty good season so far with 11 Wins and 5 defeats, and by the time this magazine is published I’m sure we will find them in the Grey Cup. A lot of people take football very seriously and in the famous words of Bill Shankly - he says it all – “Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I assure you, it’s much more serious than that.”

So on November 28th plan to spend the day with your family and have some fun – here are the directions on how to make a football pool and also some recipes for your own yummy football food.

FOOTBALL POOL

Making a football pool is quite simple: Make 100 squares on a sheet of paper. Ten columns across and ten rows down. Place one teams name on the top of the page and other teams name on the other side of the page. Figure out how much you want to charge per square and have your guests put their names in as many squares as they want to buy. Once all squares have been filled, randomly place O thru 9 across the top and 0 thru 9 down the side of each column. At the end of the game the last digit for each teams ending score is brought down and over to meet. The person in that square wins. For example, the team who was placed on the top of the page had an ending score of 23, and the team on the side of the page had an ending score of 17, the person who had bought the square down from 3 and over from 7 would be the winner. We play it for ½ time score and ending score – splitting the pot, but you can do it either way.

Now, there are bazillion different recipes for football food but Seven Layer Dip is just a recipe that cannot be forgotten and always the first one to disappear.

RDUDM K@XDQ CHO

1 Can (16 Oz.) refried beans 1 Packet taco seasoning mix 1 ½ Cups prepared guacamole 1 Cup Sour Cream 2 Tbsp. chopped cilantro 1 Tbsp. lime juice 1 Cup Salsa ½ Cup each shredded Monterey Jack and Cheddar Cheese 1 Can (4 Ounces) sliced black olives-drained 1 Cup sliced green onion Combine refried beans and taco seasoning. Mix together sour cream, limejuice and cilantro. In a 10 inch pie plate spread refried beans and in layers add the guacamole, sour cream, salsa, shredded cheeses, slices olives and green onion – in that order. Could not get much easier than that – serve with corn chips – and try to get some before it’s all gone.

These Calzone rolls are quick, easy and yummy. You can add or change the ingredients – use your imagination.

B@KYNMD QNKKR

2 Loaves frozen bread dough, thawed ½ pound sliced ham ½ pound sliced salami 2 Cups shredded mozza cheese 1 Cup Marinara sauce Roll the dough into a rectangle about 8” x 12” – layer the ham and salami down the center lengthwise. Top the meet with 1 cup of mozza for each roll. Fold short ends of each loaf in about ½ inch and seal. Roll from the long sides and pinch well to seal the entire loaf. You should have 2 long rolls. Bake, seam side down on a greased baking sheet in a 375-degree F. oven for 20 minutes or until golden brown. Cut each roll into 8 slices and serve with marinara sauce for dipping.

D – FENCE HEAD BANDS

All you need is headbands (the Hard Kind) – pipe cleaners, construction paper and glue or tape. You can find all these things at your local Dollar Store. These are so easy to make you probably already know how without directions. Wrap the pipe cleaners around a pencil and slid off the end – so they are curly. Draw a “D” and a picket fence on the constructions paper – then cut out. Glue or tape to the end of the pipe cleaner and wrap the other end around the headband. You can draw whatever you want on the construction paper – names, symbols – whatever – use your imagination. Parties are fun, football food is yummy and watching the Grey Cup at home in your own warm home and not freezing your (you know what off) is a super great way to spend time with your family and friends. I know what I will be doing November 28th. Have a wonderful month and plan for your 1st Grey Cup if you have never had one.

Project H.O.P.E.-An Introduction As residents of Wheatland County we are lucky people in a lot of ways. We’ve got great farmland, good facilities and a big town with a small town feel. What a lot of people don’t realize is that we are lucky and unique in another way because of Project H.O.P.E. H.O.P.E. stands for Holistic Oppurtunities Provided in Education. In a brief explanation, we fundraise in the community to provide music therapy and recreation therapy to children with special needs. November is Project H.O.P.E awareness month and so my goal in writing this article is to give the people of Wheatland county a history and an understanding of this very special and unique project. Project H.O.P.E. was formed in 1993 by Lianne Hilton and Sheila Konschuh working alongside Dr.Kandace Jordan. Lianne had moved to Strathmore from BC where she’d had experience with a similar program. Lianne and Sheila were both parents of children with special needs. Therefore they felt passionately that if they could come up with a plan in which the children with severe special needs could receive music therapy and recreation therapy as part of their school day it would be an extremely beneficial part of these students’ development. That was the beginning of a partnership between Golden Hills School Division and Project H.O.P.E. It began as a pilot project at Wheatland elementary school involving only five students. It was so successful that over the past 15 years it has grown into a project with over fifty students participating annually in six different schools. The children participate in activities such as clock making in recreation therapy which helps them develop basic skills like recognizing the numbers and learning to read the clock. In music therapy they would do things such as playing a drum or learning new songs which improves speech function while helping build confidence and establish better cognitive, behavioral, physical, emotional, and social skills. Studies show that for children, the portion of the day during which they are most capable of learning is between 8 am and 4 pm which is why it was so important for Project H.O.P.E. to work in partnership with the school division. Students receive these therapies at school. This is confusing for many people because they feel the Project is supported through school fees. Unfortunately this is not the case. Project H.O.P.E is entirely community funded. Funds are raised by volunteer board members through various donations. Wheatland Family and Community Support Service has always been a large supporter as have various Lions clubs in our region. A great deal of funds are donated by private citizens and small businesses in our community. We also fundraise through a Gala held every spring where we have a silent and live auction. It has been successful year after year thanks to community support. Funds raised are used to pay the therapists as well as covering costs that arise such as fees to use the civic center and buying supplies for the therapies. The Project does not receive any funds from the school division which is one of the things that makes our Project unique. Other school divisions in the past have approached our board requesting such Projects be implemented in their own divisions but have never been able to come up with the people to sit on a volunteer board and to raise their own funds. We are so lucky to have this Project in our schools. We believe in the value of every child regardless of special challenges they may face and feel strongly that all students benefit from having Project H.O.P.E in their schools. Our Project struggles every year to meet our growing budget in order to continue providing these valuable therapies to our students. Any support from the public is always greatly appreciated. If you or your business can help please contact Corinne @ 403-807-2965-. Tax receipts are available. We are always looking for people to join our board as well. If you are interested more information is available @ www.projecthopekids.com. This year we have a couple of excititng new developments at Project H.O.P.E.! We will be having ‘Art Auctions’ at various business’ throughout our community. The art has all been done and donated by actual Project H.O.P.E students which makes it extra special. If you see it around town, please make a bid on this art which will make a great conversation piece, a wonderful addition to your home and will support a great cause at the same time! Also, this year we have decided to change the focus of our Gala. We will still be having a dinner and auction, but this year, instead of auctioning items, we intend to auction experiences! Should be a great year to attend our Gala! Watch for tickets available in the spring! Feel free to contact us at the above number with any questions. Have a great November everyone! Page 18

EL NINO AND LA NINA How do these two weather patterns affect us – on a personal level? Over the years, I have heard the terms El Nino and La Nina and never really knew what they meant. I knew they were weather conditions that affect the whole world, but never really knew how or why. We enjoy the warm days and complain about the bad, but do these El Nino and La Nina forecast the warm summers or the cold winters? El Nino (also known as ENSO, Spanish for “the boy”) is a quasiperiodic climate pattern that occurs across the tropical Pacific Ocean on average of every five years and can last nine months to two years. It is characterized by variations in the warming temperature of the surface of the tropical eastern Pacific Ocean and high air surface pressure in the tropical western Pacific. The first signs of an El Nino are: - Rise in surface pressure over the Indian Ocean, Indonesia and Australia - Fall in air pressure over Tahiti and the rest of the central and eastern Pacific Ocean - Trade winds in the south Pacific weaken or head east - Warm air rising near Peru causing rain in the northern Peruvian deserts and warm water spreads from the west Pacific and the Indian Ocean to the east Pacific. It takes the rain with it, causing extensive drought in the western Pacific and rainfall in the normally dry eastern Pacific. During the winter of an El Nino event, the air temperature tends to be warm over most of Canada, with the greatest warming centered around Manitoba to western Ontario, where a temperature anomaly of up to 3+ degrees Celsius can be found. Southern Canada also tends to be drier during El Nino winter. Southern British Columbia tends to receive less snow. The effects of El Nino in 2009 were seen in the fall as the remnants of Tropical Storm Ida strengthened into a powerful coastal storm. There are all sorts of events that trigger the El Nino, from trade winds of the Walker circulation, Kelvin waves, global wind patterns, the Madden-Julian Oscillation, low pressures and high pressures – very complicated, but the results are always the same, we are always in a El Nino or a La Nina weather pattern. La Nina (Spanish meaning “the girl”) is a coupled ocean-atmosphere phenomenon that is the counterpart of El Nino. The opposite effect of El Nino - during a period of La Nina, the sea surface temperature across the equatorial Eastern Pacific will be lower than normal by 3 – 5 degrees Celsius. In the case of the cold La Nina event – the opposite of the warm El Nino event occurs, the coastal waters off British Columbia tend to be cool – Canadian air temperature tends to be below normal, while the precipitation in southern Canada tends to be above normal. Southern British Columbia tends to receive more snow. Today, it appears a La Nina is developing in the central Pacific Basin and may last through early 2011. It appears that this winter will be effected by La Nina which could means we will have a lot of snow. So, buy your snow tires and a ski-doo – it could be a really fun winter! Monthly LEARN A NEW LANGUAGE COLUMN

Pig Latin

This is our monthly learn a language column! We are going to teach you bits and pieces of different languages. This month is Pig Latin. Pig Latin is a twist of English for people who want to be silly, or for kids who don’t want their parents to know what they’re talking about. There are different ways in which people speak pig Latin. For words which begin with a single consonant take the consonant off the front of the word and add it to the end of the word. Then add ay after the consonant. Here are some examples: cat = atcay dog = ogday simply = implysay noise = oisnay

If the word ends in a consonent add y at the beginning of the word, and ay at the end of the word. For examle: answer = yansweray otter = yotteray excellent = yexcellentay interest = yinterestay Here is another variation of words that begin with a vowel and end in a consonant: Add ay at the end. Examples: after = afteray instinct = instinctay olives = olivesay elect = electay

For words which began with double or multiple consonants take the group of consonants off the front of the word and add them to the end, adding ay at the very end of the word. Here are some examples: scratch = atchscray thick = ickthay Here is another dialect for both flight = ightflay words that begin with consonants grime = imegray and words that begin with vowels. If the word begins with a consoFor words that begin with a vowel, nant, take the consonant(s) before just add yay at the end. For exam- the first vowel and put them at the ple: end of the word, adding a at the is = isyay end.For example: apple =appleyay crimson = imsoncra under = underyay yellow = ellowya octopus = octopusyay hi = iha Here is another dialect for words that begin with a vowel. First, add a y at the beginning of the word. If the word ends in a vowel, add yay at the end. For example: extra = yextrayay amuse = yamuseyay orange = yorangeyay echo = yechoyay www.thenewsyneighbor.com

If the word begins with a vowel just add a at the end. For example: alaska = Alaskaa ever = evera and = anda igloo = iglooa

You might think “Pig Latin” was just something your grandparents made up, but take a closer look. This pseudo-language is widely known and used by English-speaking people, especially when they want to disguise something they are saying from non-Pig Latin speakers. More Examples: have a secret = Iway avehay away ecretsay. The guy next to me has toilet paper stuck to his shoe = Ethay uygay extnay otay emay ashay oiletay aperpay uckstay otay ishay oeshay. I love you. = Iway ovelay ouyay.

Yes, I can hear you! = Esyay, Iway ancay earhay ouyay! What the heck are you talking about? = atwhay ethay eckhay areway ouyay alkingtay aboutway? What are you doing later? = atwhay areway ouyay oingday aterlay? What is your name? = atwhay isway ouryay amenay? My bestfriend= ymay estbay iendfray The Newsy Neighbour

Ron, an eighty five year old man, was sitting on the couch with his wife, Maisie, when she said to him, ‘Why don’t you come sit close to me like you used to.’ So, he did. After a moment, Maisie said, ‘Why don’t you put your arm around me like you used to.’ Ron put his arm around Maisie and held her tight. Then she said, ‘Why don’t you nibble on my ear like you used to.’ Ron got up and left the room. ‘Where are you going?’ Maisie called out. ‘To get my teeth,’ Ron replied. There were two elderly people, George and Sheila, living in a North Carolina mobile home park in the suburbs of Concord. He was a widower and she a widow and they had known one another for a number of years. One evening, a supper was held in the communal refectory and the two found themselves at the same table, seated across from one another. As the meal progressed, George made several admiring glances at Sheila and he finally gathered his courage to ask her, ‘Sheila, will you marry me?’ After about five seconds of “careful consideration”, Sheila answered. ‘Yes. Yes, I will.’ The meal ended and, with a few more pleasant exchanges, then they went to their respective caravans. Next morning, George was troubled: ‘Did she say “yes” or did she say “no”?’ He couldn’t remember. Try as he would, he just could not recall. Not even a faint memory. So, it was with some trepidation that he went to the telephone and called Sheila. Firstly, he explained that he didn’t remember as well as he used to. Then he reviewed the lovely evening past. As he gained a little more courage, George inquired gingerly, ‘Sheila, when I asked if you would marry me, did you say “Yes” or did you say “No”?’ George was delighted to hear her Sheila say, ‘Why, I said, “Yes, yes I will” and I meant it with all my heart.’ Then she continued, ‘I am so glad that you called, because I couldn’t remember for the life of me who had asked.’

Sitting on the side of the highway waiting to catch speeding drivers, a Police Officer sees a car puttering along at 22 KPH. Says he to himself: “This driver is just as dangerous as a speeder! So he turns on his lights and pulls the driver over. Approaching the car, he notices that there are five old ladies - two in the front seat and three in the back - wide eyed and white as ghosts. The driver, obviously confused, says to him “Officer, I don’t understand, I was doing exactly the speed limit! What seems to be the problem? “Ma’am, the officer replies, “you weren’t speeding, but you should know that driving slower than the speed limit can also be a danger to other drivers. “Slower than the speed limit? No sir, I was doing the speed limit exactly. Twenty-two kilometres an hour! the old woman says a bit proudly. The Police officer, trying to contain a chuckle explains to her that 22 is the highway number, not the speed limit. A bit embarrassed, the woman grins and thanks the officer for pointing out her error. “But before I let you go, Ma’am, I have to ask. Is everyone in this car OK? These women seem awfully shaken, and they haven’t made a peep this whole time, the officer asks.. “Oh, they’ll be all right in a minute officer. We just got off Highway 189 www.thenewsyneighbor.com

•The 1912 Grey Cup game between Toronto and Hamilton was delayed for an hour while officials looked for a football until a dressing room door was kicked in and the precious pigskin was found. •In 1984, Winnipeg Blue Bombers general manager Paul Robson left the Grey Cup behind after an indoor celebration at the Winnipeg Arena, but when he rushed back the trophy was still at center stage in the silent, empty rink. The week before the 1939 Grey Cup in Toronto, the weather turned wet and then cold. In an attempt to soften the rock-hard turf, the grounds crew poured 400 gallons of gasoline on the field and set it ablaze the day before the game. • In 1993, the CFL admitted its first team based in the United States; the Sacramento Gold Miners. • The original plan with the expansion of the CFL into the United States was for there to eventually be a ten team division of American teams and a ten team division of Canadian teams. •1994 saw the CFL placing a team in Baltimore, Maryland. The team was originally named the Colts, after Baltimore’s previous NFL team that had left for Indianapolis in 1984, but after legal maneuvering the name had to be changed to the Stallions. •The Baltimore Stallions became the first CFL team based in the United States to play for the Grey Cup in 1994, and then win it in 1995. •There were only three seasons in the entire history of the Canadian Football League that teams were located in the United States; 1993, 1994, and 1995. •The lowest attendance ever for a CFL game was 2,350 people when the Las Vegas Posse hosted the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. It is said that 800 of those spectators came from Winnipeg. •In the seven seasons from 1991 to 1997, Doug Flutie was named Canadian Football League Most Outstanding Player of the Year six times.

Funny True Story of the Strange a Smithsonian Exhibit

The story behind the letter below is that there is this man in Newport, Rhode Island named Scott Williams. What he does is dig things out of his backyard and then sends them to the Smithsonian Institute. Scott labels his exhibits with scientific names, insisting that they are actual archaeological finds. This man really exists and does this in his spare time! Anyway, here’s the actual response from the Smithsonian Institution. Bear this letter in mind next time you think you are challenged in your job to respond to a difficult situation in writing. Smithsonian Institute, 207 Pennsylvania Avenue Washington, DC 20078 Dear Mr. Williams, Thank you for your latest submission to the Institute, labelled ‘93211-D, layer seven, next to the clothesline post... Hominid skull.’ We have given this specimen a careful and detailed examination, and regret to inform you that we disagree with your theory that it represents conclusive proof of the presence of Early Man in Charleston County two million years ago. Rather, it appears that what you have found is the head of a Barbie doll, of the variety that one of our staff, who has small children, believes to be ‘Malibu Barbie.’ It is evident that you have given a great deal of thought to the analysis of this specimen, and you may be quite certain that those of us who are familiar with your prior work in the field were loathe to come to contradict your findings. However, we do feel that there are a number of physical attributes of the specimen, which might have tipped you off to its modern origin: 1. The material is moulded plastic. Ancient hominid remains are typically fossilised bone. 2. The cranial capacity of the specimen is approximately 9 cubic centimetres, well below the threshold of even the earliest identified proto-hominids. 3. The dentition pattern evident on the skull is more consistent www.thenewsyneighbor.com

with the common domesticated dog than it is with the ravenous man-eating Pliocene clams you speculate roamed the wetlands during that time. This latter finding is certainly one of the most intriguing hypotheses you have submitted in your history with this institution, but the evidence seems to weigh rather heavily against it. Without going into too much detail, let us say that: 1. The specimen looks like the head of a Barbie doll that a dog has chewed on. 2. Clams don’t have teeth. It is with feelings tinged with melancholy that we must deny your request to have the specimen carbon-dated. This is partially due to the heavy load our lab must bear in its normal operation, and partly due to carbon-datings notorious inaccuracy in fossils of recent geologic record. To the best of our knowledge, no Barbie dolls were produced prior to 1956 AD, and carbon-dating is likely to produce wildly inaccurate results. Sadly, we must also deny your request that we approach the National Science Foundation Phylogeny Department with the concept of assigning your specimen the scientific name Australopithecus spiff-arino. Speaking personally, I, for one, fought tenaciously for the acceptance of your proposed taxonomy, but was ultimately voted down because the species name you selected was hyphenated, and didn’t really sound like it might be Latin. However, we gladly accept your generous donation of this fascinating specimen to the museum. While it is undoubtedly not a Hominid fossil, it is, nonetheless, yet another riveting example of the great body of work you seem to accumulate here so effortlessly. You should know that our Director has reserved a special shelf in his own office for the display of the specimens you have previously submitted to the Institution, and the entire staff speculates daily on what you will happen upon next in your digs at the site you have discovered in your Newport back yard. We eagerly anticipate your trip to our nation’s capital that you proposed in your last letter, and several of us are pressing the Director to pay for it. We are particularly interested in hearing you expand on your theories surrounding the trans-positating fillifitation of ferrous ions in a structural matrix that makes the excellent juvenile Tyrannosaurus Rex femur you recently discovered take on the deceptive appearance of a rusty 9-mm Sears Craftsman automotive crescent wrench. IT’S GETTING COLD OUT!

DOGS • If you have an outdoor dog, provide it with an insulated doghouse with straw bedding, NOT a blanket. Blankets absorb moisture that will cause the blanket to freeze. • When your dog comes in from outside, thoroughly wipe off and towel dry its legs and stomach. Check sensitive paw pads, which may bleed from snow or ice encrusted in them. Watch for signs of distress such as shivering, licking feet, and refusing to play. • Elderly animals, young puppies, small dog breeds, and dogs with short hair should never be left outside for extended periods of time during cold or wet weather. It may be necessary to paper-train puppies inside during cold temperatures. • Dogs should never be allowed off leash on snow or ice, especially during a snowstorm. Dogs frequently lose their scent in snow and ice and can easily become lost. • Outdoor dogs require energy for warmth and should be fed an increased supply of food with plenty of protein. Provide fresh water in a non-metal dish, as a dog’s tongue can easily freeze to the metal. Snow is not a satisfactory substitute for water. CATS: • Cats’ bodies are not designed for low temperatureskeep your cat inside. • Cats left outside in the winter will seek shelter in a warm place, and many choose the engine area of a warm parked vehicle. Before starting your car, check for nearby tracks, bang loudly on the hood, honk the horn, and wait a few seconds before starting the engine to give a cat a chance to escape. DOGS & CATS: • Antifreeze, even in very tiny doses, is a lethal poison for dogs and cats. Because of its sweet taste, animals are attracted to it. Thoroughly clean up any vehicle spills and use less dangerous products that contain propylene glycol rather than traditional products that contain ethylene glycol. • Make sure animals have a warm place to sleep far away from all drafts and off the floor, such as in a bed or basket with a warm blanket or pillow. Tiles and uncarpeted areas may become extremely cold, so remember to place blankets and pads on floors in these areas. • Make sure all fireplaces have screens and keep portable heaters out of your pet’s reach. • Never leave pets alone in a vehicle during cold weather (or during hot weather for that matter). A vehicle can act as a refrigerator in the winter, holding in the cold, and the companion animal can freeze to death. If the car is left running, pets could die from breathing in carbon monoxide. Also, pets are often stolen from unattended vehicles. www.thenewsyneighbor.com

HOW MUCH DOES YOUR DOG COST? Small Dog If you have a small dog, you know much you love the little stinker. But, how much are you spending to meet its needs? A small dog isn’t the most expensive pet in the world, but it certainly will cost you money. Every year, you can expect to spend $400. During the first year, you can expect to spend $780. With the long life expectancy of a small dog, an average of 14 years, that little dog adds up big- to the tune of $5,980. Medium Dog A medium dog, as you might expect, carries medium costs per year. They don’t live quite as long, however, so the total cost isn’t much more than with a small dog. With a $545 annual cost and a $1,115 first-year expense, you might expect to pay a lot more, but with a life expectancy averaging 11 years, you can expect to pay $6,565 during the life of your medium-sized dog. Big Dog If you thought big dog = big expenses, we can’t fool you. Big dogs tend to cost a lot more, and their average life expectancy isn’t much shorter than a medium dog’s. Big dogs cost $700 a year, with first year expenses adding up to a whopping $1,500. Over the life of your big guy or gal, that comes to $7,800. But the slobber and attention is free. IT’S ALL WORTH EVERY PENNY!!! Source: Visual Economics: http://www.visualeconomics.com/ Page 28

No matter what type of crate you decide to purchase it is crate size that is the issue of importance. You want your dog to have enough room to lie down comfortably and turn around, but the crate should never be too large. Why? Your dog may start to use one area of the crate to sleep and another to eliminate. If you have purchased a larger crate so it will fit your growing puppy as an adult, use a divider which allows you to confine your puppy to a smaller area of the crate, then you can make the area larger as your puppy grows. Crate training should be kept positive so you should introduce your puppy or adult dog to the crate slowly. Place something soft in the bottom of the crate, along with a couple of your dog’s toys. It is important to let your dog explore the crate at his own pace—do NOT force him inside. Instead, toss a treat or two inside and praise him when he voluntarily enters the crate. Eventually you will use a command marking the behaviour, like “go to your crate”, when he is on his way in. Tossing him a cookie at each of these times will make this a positive place. Be sure to keep the door open letting your dog wander in and out as he wishes. Once your dog is comfortable with the crate, it is time to start getting him used to being confined. Once again, throw some treats into the crate— when your dog is inside, close the door. Wait a minute or so and then open the door. Be careful to ONLY let him out when he is quiet. Slowly start to extend the amount of time you leave your dog in the crate. For some dogs it is easier to adjust to the crate when they are in the same room as the rest of the family, others will calm down faster when they are in another room. Don’t rush this experience and constantly vary the time the dog is confined. To minimize separation anxiety, always practice leaving your dog alone. Gradually build up the amount of time you are out of the room, until your dog or puppy is comfortable being left alone in his crate for an hour or more. Then you can start to leave the house for extended periods of time on a regular basis. Sandy Cormier K9 Training and Supplies www.thenewsyneighbor.com

I Am A BEET The very first “I AM A” article was published in October of 2009 and has been a very popular contribution to the magazine ever since. The idea of the article is to share recipes, and include a brief history and health benefits of the feature food. If you are a new reader to our magazine we hope you enjoy your very first “I AM A” article! Hello, my name is Beatrice Beets and I come from the Amaranthaceae-Chenopodiaceae family; my cousin is Swiss chard. The original wild beet is thought to have originated in prehistoric times in North Africa where it grew wild along Asian and European seashores. In those times, people just ate the beet greens and not the root. The ancient Romans were one of the first civilizations to cultivate beets to eat the roots. The tribes that invaded Rome were responsible for spreading beets throughout northern Europe and we became popular in the 16th century. We are a concentrated form of sugar and the Polish people used us for this and built the first ever sugar factory in the 19th century. Wow, then did we ever grow in value. When the British restricted access to sugar cane, Napoleon decreed that the beet be used as the primary source of sugar. It was around that time that my cousins moved to the United States and we flourished. Today the leading commercial producers of beets are the United States, the Russian Federation, France, Poland and Germany – but we love Canada too. We are a little rough on the outside – but are wonderfully soft and buttery once we are cooked. We have the highest sugar content of all vegetables and yet we are very low in calories. You can eat our tops and our bottoms – both really, really good for you. We contain powerful nutrient compounds that help protect against heart disease, birth defects and certain cancers - especially colon cancer. We are rich in the B vitamin folate, which is essential for normal tissue growth – very important during pregnancy. Without adequate folate, the infant’s spinal column may not develop properly, causing a condition called neural tube defect. The daily requirement of folate is 400 micrograms. Just one cup of boiled beets contains 136 micrograms. Both beets and Swiss chard are from the same family and our edible leaves are a lot the same in taste and texture and contain lots of nutrients, vitamins, minerals and beta-carotene. We come in all sorts of beautiful colours including white, golden-yellow and even rainbow. So not only are we pretty we are also good for you – add chunks of beets to your next roast or grate us on top of your salad or soup. Marinade steamed beets in fresh lemon juice, olive oil, and fresh herbs – Yummm. I have included a few recipes – new and old and some other ideas so you can enjoy my wonderful taste. Have the most wonderful November and remember to say a prayer on Veteran’s Day, November 11th to honour the men and women who have bravely served our Country. My first recipe would have to be my very favourite soup in the world – Borscht. My great grandmother came to the United States from Russia and this is the original recipe she brought with her. My mother always made this for us in the fall with fresh beets from the garden. It became a tradition at this time of year and now we go to the garden market on the weekends to buy our fresh beets to make this all-time favourite soup. Recipes then and now are a little different – there didn’t seem to be any measuring – just add some of this and some of that and you’ll know when it looks right – that’s what mom used to say. I have tried to change the format, update it a bit; hopefully it is easier to understand.

RUSSIAN BORSCHT

1 package of beef stew About 6 good-sized beets 1 Large Onion About 3 large carrots 3 Cloves Garlic ½ Large Cabbage Salt and Pepper to taste FRESH DILL In a very large pot brown the beef and onion until browned. Take the beef from the pot and cut up into small bit sized pieces and throw back into pot. Peel and cut the beets into small cubes. Peel and grate the garlic. Peel and slice the carrots. Chop the cabbage – not too small. Add everything to the pot and cover with water. Add salt and pepper to taste and fresh dill. You can be as generous with the dill as you like. We like lots in our pot. I put in 2 – 3 large flower heads and a small handful of the smaller sprigs. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and cook – covered – until the carrots and beets are tender; the key is the longer you simmer the soup the bigger the flavour gets. I like to add a little red wine vinegar about half way through. Taste your soup – you will know if you need a little tang or not. Every time I make this soup it turns out different – maybe it depends on the mood I am in – sometimes sweeter and sometimes spicy. It is one of those soups you make your own – experiment with – use your imagination. You can add beef stock instead of water. Add cream at the end for a creamier texture and we like a spoonful of sour cream in the bowl when it is served. Borscht freezes well – so you can save some for a rainy cold day.

Boiled Beets with salt, pepper and butter are delicious but for a little different taste sensation try this easy and simple recipe.

BEETS IN ORANGE SAUCE 8 Medium Beets ¼ Cup sugar 1 Cup orange juice 2 tsp. Cornstarch Dash of Pepper Place beets in a large pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil – reduce heat, cover and simmer for 25-30 minutes or until tender. Drain and cool slightly – peel and slice, place in a serving bowl to keep warm. (You may want to use rubber gloves for this chore, as they will stain your hands). In a saucepan combine the sugar, cornstarch, pepper and orange juice. Bring to a boil and stir until thickened – pour over beets and serve. Swiss Chard is from the same family as beets and this very tasty recipe can be used for Beet tops, Swiss chard or any other green tops you choose to eat. Use your imagination.

EAT THE TOPS 1-Pound beet greens 1 strip of bacon ¼ Cup chopped onion 1 Garlic clove, minced ¾ Cup of water 1 Tbsp. sugar – brown or white 1/6 cup of red wine vinegar ¼ tsp. Crushed red pepper flakesoptional Wash and prepare tops and cut into bite sized pieces. Cook diced bacon slightly in large pan and add onions – cook until onions are softened and brown. Add garlic, water, sugar and red pepper flakes then bring to a boil. Add beet tops and toss until well coated – reduce to low heat, cover and cook for approximately 5 minutes. Stir in the vinegar. Have a taste and decide if you would like to add salt and pepper – otherwise you are done and can enjoy the tangy delicious flavour of this most healthy dish.

No dinner is complete without a fabulous salad and this is fabulous.

BEET SALAD CHEES

WITH

GOAT

4 medium beets - scrubbed, trimmed and cut in half 1/3 cup chopped walnuts 3 tablespoons maple syrup 1 (10 ounce) package mixed baby salad greens 1/2 cup frozen orange juice concentrate 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil 2 ounces goat cheese Place beets into a saucepan, and fill with enough water to cover. Bring to a boil, then cook for 20 to 30 minutes, until tender. Drain and cool, then cut in to cubes. While the beets are cooking, place the walnuts in a skillet over medium-low heat. Heat until warm and starting to toast, then stir in the maple syrup. Cook and stir until evenly coated, then remove from the heat and set aside to cool. In a small bowl, whisk together the orange juice concentrate, balsamic vinegar and olive oil to make the dressing. Place a large helping of baby greens onto each of four salad plates, divide candied walnuts equally and sprinkle over the greens. Place equal amounts of beets over the greens, and top with dabs of goat cheese. Drizzle each plate with some of the dressing.

Amusing Observations on Growing Older Going out is good. Coming home is better. When people say you look “Great”, they add “for your age”. When you needed the discount you paid full price. Now you get discounts on everything - movies, hotels, flights, but you’re too tired to use them. You forget names ... but it’s OK because other people forgot they even knew you! The 5 pounds you wanted to lose is now 15 and you have a better chance of losing your keys than the 15 pounds. You realise you’re never going to be really good at anything ... especially golf. Your significant other is counting on you to remember things you don’t remember. The things you used to care to do, you no longer care to do, but you really do care that you don’t care to do them anymore. Your husband sleeps better on a lounge chair with the TV blaring than he does in bed. It’s called his “pre-sleep”.

Now that your husband has retired, you’d give anything if he’d find a job. You used to say, “I hope my kids GET married.” Now, “I hope they STAY married!” Remember when your mother said “Wear clean underwear in case you GET in an accident”? Now you bring clean underwear in case you HAVE an accident! What used to be freckles are now liver spots. You miss the days when everything worked with just an “ON” and “OFF””switch; when Google, iPod, email, and modems were unheard of, and a mouse was something that made you climb on a table. Now that you can afford expensive jewellery, it’s not safe to wear it anywhere. Your husband has a night out with the guys but he’s home by 9:00 pm ...next week it will be 8:30 pm. You read 100 pages into a book before you realise you’ve read it before. Ever notice how everything they sell in stores is “sleeveless?” Everybody whispers. You have 3 sizes of clothes in your closet: 2 of which you will never wear.

Your kids are becoming you, and you don’t like them... but your grandchildren are perfect.

Creative Ways to Kill Boredom

Happy, Healthy and Safe.

Happy, Healthy and Safe. Noprescription prescription required. required. No

When you are finished reading this magazine please recycle it or pass it on to a friend.

Being sedentary for long periods can affect your mood for the entire day. You’ll lose your mood to do anything, which may later lead to you feeling miserable. Before boredom entraps you like a prison cell, you must find ways to stimulate your mood, making you more active physically and mentally. Break a few norms, think out of the box, and engage the simple interests that define you as an individual. You can, then, break out of a boring spell anytime you choose. Engage Your Simple Interests Every person, even bored ones, has at least one preoccupation. Of course, any prevalent thought or emotion, through creativity, can be transformed into a work of art. Grab your art materials, your journal, or origami paper and engage your preferred art. Focus on your preoccupation, dissecting it until you come up with a resolution. Now apply the entire thought process into your work. You’ll certainly be proud of your creation. Perform an act of community service. If you have time on your hands and don’t know what to do with it, why not donate it to someone in need? Your local senior center, homeless shelter, food pantry, or animal rescue might be a good place to start. Maybe there is a community cleanup you can get involved in. Like the one you start when you go out and decide to clean up your immediate community. A Trip Down Memory Lane Things and places pertaining to a person’s youth is always appreciated, which makes boredom pretty much a non-factor. Go to your old high school or college campus and stay at your former hangout spots. Bring your old boardgames and play with some of your old buddies. You’ll then remember the exuberance of your youth, which will lead to more than a few blissful recollections. As the saying goes, “an idle mind is the devil’s workshop.” Fill that “workshop” with creativity, spunk, and ounce of imagination. Boredom will soon be as insignificant as dusty furniture.

In days gone by, two brothers, Raul and Johan, who lived on adjoining farms fell into conflict. It was the first serious rift in 35 years of farming side by side in central Germany, sharing machinery, and trading labour and goods as needed without a single problem occurring. However, one autumn, the long collaboration fell apart. It began with a small misunderstanding and it grew into a major difference, and finally it exploded into an exchange of bitter words followed by weeks of silence between the two brothers. One morning there was a knock on Raul’s door. He opened it to find a man holding a carpenter’s toolbox. ‘I’m looking for a few days work,’ Angelis said. ‘Perhaps you would have a few small jobs here and there I could help with? Could I help you?’ ‘Yes,’ answered Raul, extremely pleased to see Angelis the carpenter, ‘I do have a job for you. Look across the creek at that farm. That’s my neighbour. In fact, it’s my younger brother, Johan’s farm. Last week there was a meadow between us and he took his bulldozer to the river levee and now there is a creek between us. Well, he may have done this to spite me, but I’ll go him one better. See that pile of lumber by the barn? I want you to build me a fence; an 8-foot fence, so I won’t need to see Johan’s place nor his face anymore.’ Angelis the carpenter said thoughtfully, ‘I think I understand the situation. Show me the nails and the post hole digger and I’ll be able to do a job that pleases you.’ Raul then left for the nearby town. The carpenter worked hard all that day measuring, sawing, nailing, and hammering. About sunset when Raul returned, the carpenter had just finished his job. The farmer’s eyes opened wide, his jaw dropped. There was no fence there at all. It was a bridge: a bridge stretching from one side of the creek to the other. A fine piece of work handrails and all, and the neighbour, his younger brother Johan, was coming across, his hand outstretched. ‘You are quite a fellow to build this bridge after all I’ve said and done,’ Johan smiled. The two brothers stood at each end of the bridge, and then they met in the middle, taking each other’s hand. They turned to see the carpenter hoist his toolbox on his shoulder. ‘No, wait. Stay a few days. I’ve a lot of other projects for you,’ called Raul. ‘I’d love to stay on,’ Angelis murmured quietly, ‘but, I have many more bridges to build.’ www.thenewsyneighbor.com

MY FAVOURITE – FABULOUS – FANTASTIC AND FUN STUFF Great ideas come to me when I least expect it. Normally when I’m just dozing off to sleep and I think “That is a good idea – I’ll remember that in the morning!” But you don’t remember and you don’t even remember you had the great idea. Therefore, now I get up no matter what time it is and write it down (as long as I can remember where I wrote it)! This article idea was one of those great ideas. We all have favourite, fabulous and fantastic thing we love and want to share with other people. An idea, poem, story, joke, experience, craft or anything else you can think of – use your imagination. Our magazine is about reader participation; we always love to hear from you, and after all, without all our loyal readers this magazine would not be possible. For the first column of MY FAVOURITE – FABULOUS – FANTASTIC AND FUN STUFF I have chosen to share some really great quotes – I know it sounds boring but read on, for they will bring a smile to your face, a warmth to your heart and may make you think about life. These quotes are by Mr. “Will” Rogers, the famous American cowboy, comedian, humourist, social commentator, vaudeville performer and actor and all around great man. Don’t squat with your spurs on.

Good judgement comes from experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgement. Lettin’ the cat out of the bag is a whole lot easier’n puttin’ it back in. www.thenewsyneighbor.com

If you’re riding ahead of the herd, take a look back every now and them to make sure it’s still there. If you get thinkin’ you’re a person of some influence, try ordering somebody else’s dog around. There are two theories to arguing with a women. Neither one works. When you give a lesson in meanness to a critter or a person, don’t be surprised if they learn their lesson. The quickest way to double your money is to fold it in half and put it back in your pocket. Never miss a good chance to shut-up. And here is a thought provoking story to think about: An old Cherokee was teaching his grandchildren about life. He said to them, “A battle is raging inside of me…it is between two wolves. One wolf represents fear, anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, superiority and ego. The other stands for joy, peace, love, hope, sharing, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, friendship, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.” The old man fixed the children with a firm stare. “This same fight is going on inside you, and inside every other person, too.” They thought about it for a minute and then one child asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?” The old Cherokee replied “The one you feed.” By: Kathryn Hartwell www.thenewsyneighbor.com

“We Service What We Sell” WWW.PJSAPPLIANCES.COM Alberta Certified Journeyman Appliance Service Technicians THIS MONTH REMEMBER by Kait au Lait

This month we remember. We remember the men and women who gave so much for our freedoms. We remember the families that have lost in times of conflict. We remember sacrifice. My older brother is in the Canadian Armed Forces; he’s stationed in Petawawa, Ontario. He’s a wonderful man; a devoted husband and father and an amazingly loyal son. He’s a great brother, someone strong and emotionally rich who I’ve been able to look up to. When he was deployed to Afghanistan I was terrified of the loss our family could face; but I refused to think about the potential of him not coming home. I couldn’t imagine our family without him in the summer, sitting by mom and dad’s pond, hauling long on a cigarette while telling his ridiculous stories. I couldn’t imagine a life without this kind eyes and warm smile, or his reassurance whenever something went wrong. I couldn’t imagine having to carry the emotional weight that my parents would face, especially mom... The day he deployed, I called him in the morning to remind him how much I loved him and how he could call me, email me or write me anytime he needed to. I told him I would miss him; even though he tried to be brave, he cried... and I cried. We stayed connected through Facebook; I sent him care packages of candy and other reminders of home as often as I could. I would always include extra with instructions that he was to share it with the boys who didn’t have the same support system as him. Being the good boy he is, he consistently complied with my motherly direction. I was confident he would come home safe, unscathed, as I’m sure many families were convinced, until his convoy was hit. He was six months into his 9 month tour of duty. He was a short way ahead of the blast, much to the fortune of our family. But was he really fortunate? He watched and made efforts to assist as six of his comrades bled out onto the dusty roads of Afghanistan; thousands of miles away from their families. There was little comfort anyone could lend these scared and hurt men; the only thing surrounding them was the noise of war. That day, as he witnessed six families lose their bright lights; a piece of my brother died. When my brother came home, he was a different man. He was angry; he was emotionally drained and he was restless. It’s taken him three years to start to regain his stability and trust. He had to learn how to adapt to simple things at home, like walking on grass and sleeping in silence. He won’t ever be the same. Do I question the missions we participate in? I do. Do I support my brother? Without a doubt. Will I always remember? Absolutely. www.thenewsyneighbor.com

Health & Beauty JUICING

We have been going to the Farmers Market every weekend all summer – my favourite place – I love all the aromas of the fresh fruits and vegetables and the beautiful eye candy of the place. A photographers dream – so many beautiful pictures with all the colours and imaginings of angles and themes. Thoughts of imaginative recipes and juices pop into my mind. Therefore, for the first time in a long time, I have started to juice again. I pulled my old juicer from the back of the pantry and became creative with producing really tasty and healthy concoctions to tantalize my taste buds. There are a lot of awesome juicing books around and they all explain the advantage of how juices can detoxify, heal and make you feel better inside and out. The nice thing about juices is that they make it simple and easy to take in the nutrition you need. Juices are living foods in one of their most potent and easily accessible forms. So go ahead and supercharge your bloodstream with powerful plant medicines and concentrated nutrients and start juicing! I have included a few ideas to help you get started.

CARROT FIXER UPPER

Carrots are the best-known source of beta-carotene, an antioxidant that fights against many diseases of aging including cancer, heart disease and stroke. Alfalfa sprouts are a top source of phytoestrogens, the plant equivalent of human estrogen, which can stimulate cell growth. Garlic has several anti-aging benefits, including improved memory and lowered blood pressure. Juice 8 to 10 medium sized carrots, 1 small carton of Alfalfa Sprouts & 1 Clove Garlic I have been making this carrot recipe for about a month now and I can truly say I’m feeling I have more energy and just feeling all around better. Try it for yourself – it’s addicting. Page 42

TOMATO MIRACLE

Tomatoes have a very high lycopene content and the discovery that this carotenoid reduces the risk of prostate cancer is phenomenal news. Red cabbage is also a rich source of anthocyanidins and pro-anthocyanidins, providing antiaging benefits for Alzheimer’s, atherosclerosis, and macular degeneration. Celery lowers blood pressure and garlic stimulates the immune system to the extent that it has been used to fight a variety of cancers.

ANTI - ALZHEIMER JUICE

1 Cup Prune Juice Prunes are our richest source of malic acid, which is a proven remover of aluminum and other toxic metals from the brain. Aluminum toxicity is a factor in Alzheimer’s disease. Prunes are dried plums. Whereas plums are difficult to juice, they can be dried and soaked. Their juice fills the soak water suffusing it with its nutritional properties.

WATERMELON DIURETIC

6oz Watermelon Juice While adding many ingredients is tasty and very nutritious, simplicity is a virtue. Watermelon is a terrific diuretic and makes as delicious a drink as any. Be sure to juice the rind as well as the red part. Be careful not to drink too much. Only six ounces is recommended, because the drink is very high in natural sugars and water and too much will increase bloating rather then cure it. Buy organic melon whenever possible. www.thenewsyneighbor.com

To answer this question we need to first explore what the Craniosacral System is. (the following text was taken from CS Therapy I Study Guide) The CS (Craniosacral) system is a recently discovered physiological system. It is a semi-closed hydraulic system contained within the tough waterproof membrane which envelopes the brain and spinal cord. One of the primary functions of this system is the production, circulation and reabsorption of Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF). CSF is produced within the CS system and maintains the physiological environment in which your brain and nervous system develop, live and function. Normally, the production and reabsorption of CSF within the Dura Mater produces a continuous rise and fall of fluid pressure within the CS system. The system expands and contracts to some extent with this rhythmical pressure fluctuation. This accommodation prevents pressure from building up within the CS System. If for some reason your body is unable to accommodate these pressure changes, the subsequent buildup of pressure can contribute to dysfunction and ill health body wide. After years of investigation it is now known that the Dura Mater plays a key role in cranial bone movement. Techniques for evaluating and treating the Dural membranes and fascial system were developed largely by Dr. John Upledger and are known as Craniosacral Therapy. Craniosacral therapy is beneficial for absolutely ANYONE, but specifically has been seen to benefit the following and more: • Headache, Migraine. • Asthma, Sinusitis, Bronchitis, • Joint Disorders • Digestive Problems • Menstrual Disorders • Back Pain, Neck Pain • Anxiety, Stress • Problems during and after Pregnancy • Depression • Baby Care, Colic, Feeding Difficulties. • Ear Infections, Tonsillitis • Learning Difficulties, Dyslexia • Behavioural Disorders • Dental and TMJ Problems. • Shock and Trauma • Head Injuries • Lack of Energy. www.thenewsyneighbor.com

People, despite getting teary-eyed, enjoy the numerous culinary uses of the onion. The gas containing vegetable is both a primary ingredient and a flavour enhancer in many dishes. If you think its list of uses end at the kitchen, you better think again. It is proven to be a medicinal wonder, as well Here's what our clients are saying as a metal polisher and an insect repellent. With its number about the sunless spray tan experience of alternative uses, the onion may induce tears of joy to any “Mystic Tan What can I say but an awesome DIY pundit. The onion’s scent won’t completely eliminate the chemical stench, but it will surely bring the fumes to a more tolerable level. 3. Reliever for Burns - Burns sting and are prone to infection. Treat those inflammations by mixing onion slices with a little water. Apply the mixture to the affected areas and within a few hours, your burns will subside. Just reapply whenever necessary. 4. Insect Repellent - The gases emitted by the onion, when sliced, have strong odors and are known irritants. Naturally, household pests will shy away upon detecting those gases. Vitamin D Sunbeds · Tanning Gather your onion waste and put it in a bowl. Place the bowl Infrared Sauna · Mystic HD Sunless where you often see your much despised creepy-crawlies. Mon - Thurs: 9:30am - 8:30pm Pretty soon, those insects will find other venues to terrorFri: 9:30 am to 7 pm Sat & Sun: 10 am to 2 pm ize, probably those without onion-based repellents. 5. Wart Remover - Mix onion slices with crushed aspirin and 403-983-1803 STRATHMORE a little water. Apply the solution to the wart. The onion’s chemical content and the aspirin’s active ingredients will gradually soothe the wart and make it subside. To maximize the solution’s effect, apply some to a piece of duct tape. Stick the tape on the wart. After several hours, the lesion will be nothing more than a distant memory. 6. Metal Polish - Mix several crushed onion slices with some water. Apply the solution to a dull metal object using a piece of cloth. The results may not come as quickly as commercial polishers, but the onion-based polish is good enough to be a worthy substitute. 7. Acne Remover - Just like with burns and warts, an onion solution can be used to remove acne. The vegetable’s chemical components are harsh on zits, erasing them gradually upon application. Mix crushed onion slices with water and apply the mixture to your face. It is pretty effective, however it will probably do a number on your eyes. Just apply if the your eyes sting in the process.

NEWSY REVIEW:

The Mystic Tan is amazing!! Running a magazine, I don’t always find the time to go tanning a couple times a week to keep up that nice glow. With the Mystic Tan, I get the same results!!! I have done it twice and plan on doing it again and again, especially before those special occasions. ~ Aleesha Gosling www.thenewsyneighbor.com

Ways to Deal with a Hangover

H&B

Waking up with a hangover is not a pleasurable experience. The first thing that you will notice is a stinging headache, which throbs whenever you try to move. It is joined by dizziness, an intolerance for cold temperatures, and a generally heavy feeling. Moving about is not easy, as well as eating meals, especially if your hangover is pretty severe. Such is the price that you have to pay for drinking too much the night before. The good thing is, there is a variety of ways on how to eliminate a hangover. You just have to find out which of these methods work best for you: 1. Take a Cold Shower ~ Taking a cold bath is a popular method for dealing with a hangover. The sudden splash of cold water, which slams onto your torso, gives you a much needed jolt. This rush induces the quick production of adrenaline in the body. The adrenaline, in turn, raises your tolerance for the hangover’s effects. If you take a cold shower while experiencing a hangover, the headache and the heavy sensation will gradually diminish. They may even disappear if you’re pretty lucky. 2. Sports Drinks ~ Dehydration, which weakens the body and makes you feel heavy, is one of the dire effects of a hangover. Water comes as a good solution, but the recovery process is a bit too long. You can take a page from your favourite athletes and substitute water for a sports drink, at least while you have a hangover. Sports drinks are excellent hydrating agents since they contain electrolytes, which promote proper hydration. These drinks are used by athletes, so they won’t feel tired and thirsty after a lengthy training session. In your case, you will regain your strength a bit faster after downing a bottle. 3. Sleep Some More ~ Waiting for a hangover to subside is agonizing, since you have to endure its symptoms for several hours, or even the entire day. You still won’t feel pleasant, even if you take the proper medication. So why bother facing the problem when you can actually sleep through it. Sleeping is the most effective means of enduring a hangover 5. Swim ~ The swimming pool, in terms of dealing with a hangover, is like an upgrade of the shower room. You are totally immersed in water while inside the pool. The water surrounding and covering your body instantly relieves the hangover’s symptoms. You can also submerge your head if you are suffering from severe headache. When you leave the pool, your hangover is either gone or greatly reduced. 8. Baking Soda Solution ~ Baking soda is a kitchen condiment that holds more than a dozen alternative uses. Dealing with a hangover happens to be one of them. Mix some baking soda with water then drink the mixture. The nausea, associated with the hangover, will gradually disappear. 9. Increase Magnesium Intake ~ Magnesium, being a treatment for migraines, works well against the headache caused by hangovers. Consume a significant amount of the mineral and your headache will gradually fade. The popular sources of magnesium are: vegetables, nuts, tea, cocoa, coffee, spices The hangover is a consequence for people who drink too much. You should know your limits when it comes to guzzling beer and martinis, or else a hangover is bound to appear. Effective as the means for recovery are, no method instantly removes the discomforting condition. So remember people, do hold your alcohol, at least from time to time.

The Newsy Neighbour asks Lar-Don Rentals:

I’m looking for a particular piece of equipment... why should I rent it instead of buying it? There are a number of reasons to rent something instead of buying it. First and foremost: why try to find somewhere to store something for 360 days a year for the 5 days you actually need this item? When you rent something, you know that it is going to work the way it is supposed too (or should, anyhow). Moreover, when you go to a true professional rental store like Strathmore has to offer with Lar-Don Rentals, if there is a better tool for your job they’ll make a referral to use it instead, which will make your job easier and more proficient. A rental store like ours is always upgrading to newer, easier to use equipment, and has the newest technology out there. They’ll sometimes even have tools and equipment there for your job that you didn’t even realize existed, or didn’t think about a different tool which would be a cleaner, cheaper method of getting the job done. How often have you gone to use a tool or piece of equipment you have just to find it missing (borrowed out and can’t remember who has it, or just plain misplaced it), or find it then spend the day trying to fix it because it doesn’t work? A rental shops’ tools and equipment is their livelihood, so their stuff is well maintained and just about always ready to go, unless it’s already gone out on rent. But under the circumstances that you do have troubles with their piece, you just make a phone call and they’ll be prompt at getting the issue resolved.

Try it before you buy it. I use this one myself quite often, like when we are looking at buying a new vehicle, we’ll rent that model for a week which gives us an excellent idea on if we truly like it. You can exchange it if you discover that it isn’t like what you wanted. They’ll often exchange at no charge or at a minimal charge if necessary, or just return it and pay the rent, which is MUCH CHEAPER than paying retail price for something you don’t like. If you do like it and want to buy it, our store will credit the rental price (up to a 1 week rental) towards the purchase. Plus, what guy doesn’t like toys for big boys, which our rental inventory has all sorts of fun days for rent (I mean ‘work tools’ to the wives and girlfriends!). AND TO ALL: PLEASE GO OUT AND SHOW YOUR PATRIOTISM AND PARTICIPATE IN REMEMBRANCE DAY EVENTS! Jason Larden, General Manager Lar-Don Holdings (Rentals) LTD.

Monthly Book Review by Derek Donais My name is Derek Donais. I live in a small town outside of Calgary, Alberta, Canada with my wife of eleven wonderful years, Connie, and our two beautiful children, Kieran—age six, and Maia-Lynn— age four. I’ve been a teacher for nearly a decade and before that I was a police officer for two years. I’ve always been a fan of fantasy and science-fiction and I started writing my own stories seriously about ten years ago. I’ve written two fantasy novels so far, and after encouragement from a mentoring author, among others, I decided to self-publish the second work. After some careful research into self-publishers, I opted to go with my present publisher, Wheatmark Books. It’s been a great experience and MetalMagic, the first in the planned trilogy, has received excellent support and feedback so far. I’m working on a sequel, and time will tell which route it takes to publication.

Prince Kristian’s Honor: Book One of the Erinia Saga Tod Langley Wheatmark, 2009 Fantasy, 282 pages ISBN: 978-1604943047

“What if Mikhal was right? What if everything I have done was simply for some stupid notion of glory, for a quest that was never my right to undertake?” — Prince Kristian of Landron Prince Kristian, heir to the throne of Erand, is not a popular young man. He is reckless, haughty and wilful: traits that do little to endear him to the people of his nation. The soldiers who ride in his escort believe him to be pompous and arrogant. They have no faith in his abilities as their future leader. As the story unfolds, Kristian is headed to Duellr in order to forge an alliance against the rising threat posed by the kingdom of Belarn. The alliance will follow his arranged marriage to Allisia, the Duellrian princess. Ferral, Prince of Belarn, is leading a revival of the old ways, a return to worshipping the evil Belatarn. Ferral hopes to regain the favour of this elder god so that his nation might prevail against its bitter rival, Erand, and regain the prominence it once enjoyed. Through the use of Belatarn’s gift of dark magic, Ferral descends to ever deeper levels of evil in the attempt to realize his visions of power. He orders Princess Allisia abducted and unleashes unnatural forces against the other realms. Ferral’s vile machinations devastate both Kristian’s homeland and the state of Duellr. The Erandian prince becomes king, forced to take up the crown of his slain father. With only remnants of his shattered nation’s armed forces and scattered allies to aid him, Kristian must set out to gain the trust and respect of his army, win Allisia’s heart and reclaim his family’s honor. But Ferral has other plans and he has summoned an horrific, seemingly unstoppable army to enforce his will. A great strength of this book is that it is written by an author with genuine combat experience. A former officer in the United States armed forces, Tod Langley served two tours in Iraq following the attacks of September 11, 2001, and has merited two Bronze stars for his military service. Those insights help him to expertly craft complex and believable scenes of conflict, which adds to the sense of urgency, realism and perspective that permeate his novel. Prince Kristian’s Honor is a worthwhile and entertaining read for any fan of epic fantasy. Derek Donais www.derekdonais.com dragonwind2000@hotmail.com www.thenewsyneighbor.com

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT CANADA

Shull for pioneering contributions to the development of neutron scattering techniques for studies of condensed matter. Brockhouse was born in Lethbridge, Alberta, and worked at McMaster University Hamilton, Ontario. Each Canadian eats an average of about 190 eggs a year. In total, Canada has about 20 million egg-laying hens laying about 7 billion eggs each year. Canada has just over one thousand regulated egg farms with an average of between 17,000 and 18,000 hens each. One egg farm in the United States, which is home to about 280 million egg-laying hens, can produce as many eggs as all of the egg farms in Canada combined. Canada produces more oil than it needs for domestic consumption. Nearly the entire surplus is exported to the USA. The USA buys more oil from Canada than from any other country, including Saudi Arabia. Digital Home Canada: Canadian adults (18 and over) watch more TV than children, an average of 28.8 hours a week in a full year. Practical Jokes for HOME

Practical Jokes for THE OFFICE

1) Tell someone you can pin a glass of water to the wall -- a real glass, not a paper cup, using an ordinary straight pin. Naturally they won’t believe, so you set out to prove it. Get a glass of water and a pin. Hold the glass up to the wall and start to pin it up. And then drop the pin. You’ve got the glass in position just right, so you ask your victim real nice to get the pin for you. When they bend down to pick it up, dump the water on their head. This works especially well when there’s a crowd of people watching. It can also be very dangerous for the joker, so be careful if you try it.

1) Hook all the paper clips together so that when they pull one out, they all come out together. 2) On a daily basis, after work, go in and empty someone’s stapler. The owner will be so mad that they have to refill the stapler every day or so. 3) Take any umbrella and fill it with any amount of small objects and place back in its original position. 4) Switch the cables of your officemates’ computers. Watch them scratch their heads as they try to figure out what is happening on their monitors.

Life Lines

Monthly column by Jody Brown, designed to help you make better connections and live happier lives. Sometimes we just need to ask the question. Joanne (Jody) Brown is an NLP Master Practitioner and Advanced Master Hypnotherapist with a Diploma in Corrections. You can learn more about NLP and hypnosis techniques on her website at www.authenticbeing.ca or contact her at Authentic Being Consulting #403-983-2230 in Strathmore. Dear Life Lines: How can I find fulfillment in life? I just feel that there is no way that I can reach happiness. I feel like I’m trying everything.

Dear Miserable;

Signed, Miserable.

Well, you are right about needing to work at it. We all have to. It is funny, but one of the hardest questions is to ask yourself what brings you happiness. It’s not as easy as it might seem. There are lots of things we do in life to busy ourselves and keep preoccupied. Sometimes it gives us a sense of purpose, but many times it might just be a matter of moving from one activity to another, not really thinking about how the activity impacts us or people around us and what its true purpose really is. Are we doing it for ourselves? Is it out of a sense of obligation to someone else? Is it because we like the way we look to others when we do this activity? Or do we feel a real connection and joyfulness in doing the activity? Do we get pleasure in the ‘doing’ and not in the receiving of any other gains? We need to make ourselves aware and conscious of our actions and how they impact our feelings, our bodies and our thoughts. Often it’s a real challenge to determine what brings us happiness from within ourselves apart from anything external. Of course sometimes we do activities because we have an obligation to the school or to the community or to a relative, but what we’re talking about here is the actual fulfillment of your passion in life and how you go about uncovering, identifying and honoring that passion. It’s what will give you the skip in your step and the zest for life that eludes so many of us. Many recommend that we reduce the stress in our lives as a first step in creating the life we desire. You might need to clear all the items that you no longer use from your house – keep the things you need or are attached to. If you feel this is too overwhelming, watch the show ‘Hoarders’ and that might quickly put your situation into perspective. However, if you can identify with those on ‘Hoarders’, perhaps it’s time to seek some assistance from professional organizers or professional mental health experts to help you deal with your situation. After reducing some of the clutter around you, it’s amazing how that frees up the mind and allows you to do so much more with your time. You will also want to pay attention to your nutrition, exercise and mental health as well. Slow things down a bit. There are many terrific books on finding your passion and joy. Some of my favourites include, Excuse Me, Your Life is Waiting by Lynn Grabhorn,. A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle and Happiness by Thich Nhat Hanh. I would recommend reading them in that order as the final book is really focused on mindfulness and meditation.. As well, Dr Wayne Dyer has a number of inspirational books and DVDs that help put you in a receptive frame of mind for receiving good things in your life. It’s amazing how many great opportunities we overlook or avoid because we just feel it’s not the right time or we’re ill prepared for something. Receptivity is a real skill you need to develop in order to be ready for those great opportunities for joy that exist around us. Hopefully these few initial points give you a small compass that you can align, personalize and navigate to your own inner sense of direction. If you need more in-depth discussion or direction, I offer complete sessions including strategies and exercises that offer you greater discovery into how to locate and navigate your inner compass. Keep us posted on your progress! Life Lines www.thenewsyneighbor.com

THE RULES OF RURAL Alberta ARE AS FOLLOWS

Listen up City Slickers! 1. Pull your droopy pants up. You look like an idiot. 2. Turn your cap straight, your head isn’t crooked. 3. Let’s get this straight; it’s called a ‘dirt road.’ I drive a pickup truck because I want to. No matter how slow you drive, you’re going to get dust on your Lexus. Drive it or get out of the way. 4. So you have a $60,000 car. We’re impressed. We have $365,000 combines and hay balers that are driven only 3weeks a year. 5. So every person in rural Alberta waves. It’s called ‘being friendly’. Try to understand the concept. 6. If that cell phone rings while an 8-point buck and 3 does are coming in, we WILL shoot it out of your hand. You better hope you don’t have it up to your ear at the time. 7. Yeah, we eat meat and potatoes. You really want sushi & caviar? It’s available at the corner bait shop. 8. The ‘Opener’ refers to the first day of deer hunting season. It’s a religious holiday held the closest Saturday to the first of November. 9. We open doors for women. That is applied to all women, regardless of age. 10. When we set a table, there are three main dishes: meats, vegetables and breads. We use three spices: salt, pepper, and ketchup. 11. 2 inches of snow & ice isn’t a blizzard - it’s a vacation. The pickups with snow blades and tractors with snow blowers will have you out the next day. www.thenewsyneighbor.com

RE Real Estate

With the stock market being where it is and the recession eating away at the economy, it’s become harder than ever to sell a home on the market today. Let’s face it, so many people have defaulted on their home loans that the market is flooded with cheap homes, making it hard to get anything done! One way to make your home stand out from the rest is to fix it up...but you have to do it the right way! Fixing up things add value to your home allowing you to sell it easier or get more money out of a refinance with the bank. When it comes to renovations that add value to your home, you want to stick to the trends of the day. Whatever is trendy, whatever is popular, that’s what you want focus on. Today some of the main trends revolve around energy-saving fixes, green is in, as well as European stylings. Designer laminates are very popular for kitchen renovations but wood is still very popular too when it comes to counter tops as well as beams and trim treatments. Lighting is important too and sometimes very inexpensive to do. These sort of things can include high-tech fixtures that focus on lighting up specific work areas all the way to dimmer switches. One important trend that seems to be in high demand is the idea of having open kitchens that are integrated into living areas. This is most likely going to include removing a wall or two so it’s not to be done by the lighthearted! Bathrooms are another area that it can pay to remodel. When it comes to this sort of thing, you usually have two main options and those are to either renovate a current bathroom or add on a new bathroom. Many times additions make the most sense from an economic point of view especially if your house only has one or two bathrooms to begin with. It may only cost between five and $10,000 to add a new second bathroom, but that can often translate into 100% or 140% increases over the cost you paid for the renovation. If you choose to renovate an old bathroom you need to be very careful because quite often piecemeal renovation can get carried away with itself and end up costing more than it would’ve cost you to add a new addition! So you really need to be careful. You want to spend as little money as possible on that sort of thing. Finally replacing windows, doors, and skylights that are not energy-efficient with new energy-efficient models can do wonders for resale value as well. So there you have several home renovation ideas that can increase the value of your home if you’re trying to sell and can add value to your home and allow you to refinance at a higher rate as well.

RRSP or TFSA or both? Let goals drive your strategy Beginning January 2009, contributing to investments in a Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) has been possible. And each year, while deciding on your TFSA contribution, you may also be considering how much to put into your RRSP. If you can’t max out contributions to both, review your savings strategy. What’s the difference? You contribute to an RRSP with pre-tax dollars, while TFSA savings come out of aftertax income. Both have annual limits and allow you to carry forward unused contribution room. Both enjoy tax-sheltered growth, but you will be taxed on withdrawals from an RRSP. All TFSA withdrawals are tax-free — you keep every cent. Each has its benefits With higher contribution limits than the TFSA, your RRSP is ideal for retirement savings, especially if you reinvest your tax savings. RRSPs promote long-term savings because withdrawals are taxed and can’t be returned to the plan, with a few exceptions that let you borrow from a plan to buy a home or go to school. In contrast, you may take money out of a TFSA and recontribute it later, and there is no upper age limit for contributing, as with RRSPs. TFSA withdrawals don’t count as income, so won’t affect benefits like Old Age Security. Both can work together An RRSP-TFSA split may be useful if you have pension benefits that reduce RRSP contribution room, or to save more for retirement. You might use a TFSA to save for short-term needs or emergencies. You can use both to split income with your spouse. We can review your goals to set a suitable strategy. One day a man decided to retire...

Real Estate

He booked himself on a Caribbean cruise and proceeded to have the time of his life, that is, until the ship sank. He soon found himself on an island with no other people, no supplies, nothing, only bananas and coconuts. After about four months, he is lying on the beach one day when the most gorgeous woman he has ever seen rows up to the shore. In disbelief, he asks, “Where did you come from? How did you get here?” She replies, “I rowed over from the other side of the island where I landed when my cruise ship sank.” “Amazing,” he notes. “You were really lucky to have a row boat wash up with you.” “Oh, this thing?” explains the woman. “I made the boat out of some raw material I found on the island. The oars were whittled from gum

tree branches. I wove the bottom from palm tree branches, and the sides and stern came from a Eucalyptus tree.” “But, where did you get the tools?” “Oh, that was no problem,” replied the woman. “On the south side of the island, a very unusual stratum of alluvial rock is exposed. I found that if I fired it to a certain temperature in my kiln, it melted into ductile iron I used that to make tools and used the tools to make the hardware.” The guy is stunned. “Let’s row over to my place,” she says. So, after a short time of rowing, she soon docks the boat at a small wharf. As the man looks to shore, he nearly falls off the boat. Before him is a long stone walk leading to an exquisite bungalow painted in blue and white. While the woman ties up the rowboat with an expertly woven hemp rope, the man can only stare ahead, dumb struck. As they walk into

edge are fastened on to its end inside a swivel mechanism. “This woman is amazing,” he muses. “What’s next?” When he returns, she greets him wearing nothing but some small flowers on tiny vines, each strategically positioned, she smelled faintly of gardenias. She then beckons for him to sit down next to her. “Tell me,” she begins suggestively, slithering closer to him, “We’ve both been out here for many months. You must have been lonely. There’s something I’m certain you feel like doing right now, something you’ve been longing for, right?” She stares into his eyes. He can’t believe what he’s hearing. “You mean...” he swallows excitedly as tears start to form in his eyes, “You’ve built a Golf Course?”

the house, she says casually, “It’s not much, but I call it home. Sit down, please.” “Would you like a drink?” “No! No thank you,” the man blurts out, still dazed. “I can’t take another drop of coconut juice.” “It’s not coconut juice,” winks the woman. “I have a still. How would you like a Pina Colada?” Trying to hide his continued amazement, the man accepts, and they sit down on her couch to talk. After they exchange their individual survival stories, the woman announces, “I’m going to slip into something more comfortable. Would you like to take a shower and shave? There’s a razor in the bathroom cabinet upstairs.” No longer questioning anything, the man goes upstairs into the bathroom. There, in the cabinet is a razor made from a piece of tortoise bone. Tips for first time home buyers

1) Be choosy, but be realistic. You may never find the perfect home. 2) Do your homework before looking at homes. Determine exactly what features you want in a home and which are most important to you. 3) Get your finances in order. Examine your credit report & be prepared for down payment or closing costs. 4) Get pro-approved for a mortgage. Talk to a lender NOW - before engaging a Realtor. 5) Know your move-in date. When does your lease end? Are you allowed to sublet? How tight is the rental market in your area? 6) Think long term. Are you looking for a starter home, or something to stay in for a long time? This could influence the type of home you decide to purchase, as well as the type of mortgage terms that might best suit you. 7) Don’t become house poor! Buying the biggest home that you can afford may leave you no money for maintenance, decor or renovations. Plus, it may make it hard for you to save money for other financial goals. 8) Don’t take changes. Obtain a professional home inspection and, if possible, a warranty from the seller to cover any defect within the first year.

Metal Magic: Talisman

In Evarlund only those who can utilize metanduil – a specially conductive metal – are able to wield magic. Unfortunately for Jaren Haldannon, a simple farmer’s son who aspires to more, he has no such connection to this magic-metal. His sister Morgaine, however, possesses enough potential that dark forces seek her capture. Together, Jaren and Morgaine must flee their village, beginning an adventure in which the survival of all kingdoms hangs in the balance. The dark forces serve the Warwitch, who has ascended to power through the violation of natural laws; she has melded magic-metal with her own body to transform herself into a fearsome sorceress. In the process, she has also discovered how to use metanduil itself as a devastating tool of war, creating an old-world ‘weapon of mass destruction.’ The aim of the Warwitch is the domination of every realm in Evarlund, and she has no need of armies to achieve her ends. Jaren must survive treachery and betrayal, face his own sister turned against him and, ultimately, confront a relentless and seemingly invincible enemy. His one-time dream has become a living nightmare, one from which he and the whole of Evarlund may never awaken.

10 Unique Uses For Used Tea Bags Everyone is familiar with the health benefits of tea: it fights cancer, reduces risk of stroke and other diseases, and revitalizes body cells. Yet, after you’ve drained your delicious cup of tea, you find yourself discarding the used tea bags. Well, don’t. You’ll be surprised at the number of ways you can reuse these materials. Here are a number of unique and surprising uses for those old tea bags. Soothe Tired or Injured Eyes Crying all night over a breakup can result in puffy and red eyes. While regular ice bags would work, a couple of tea bags can do the trick. Soak them in ice cold water then apply over your eyelids, as compresses. The tea will rejuvenate your face, removing the redness and puffiness after a while. This method also works for healing pink eye. Flavor Your Meat Meat tastes great when cooked the right way, but when not prepared properly, it can turn out bland, tough and unappetizing. Here’s one way of solving that problem: use tea bags (or even leftover tea) to marinade your meat. The sweetness of the drink will add a savory taste to your barbecue. Make “Less Sinful” Drinks If you’re a health junkie, you’re definitely very much aware of the unpleasant effects of soft drink and alcoholic beverages on your body. To lessen the guilt of consuming these sinful drinks, you can substitute half of it with tea. Soak the used tea bag in hot or cold water again for a few minutes, then get the same amount of soft drink or alcoholic beverage and mix them together. There’s less calories and sugar, but the flavour will be improved. Around-The-House Cleaner Tea can effectively remove grease and grime on mirrors, floors and even linoleum, so why not use your old bags to make a cold brew, then use it as a cleaning solution? Mop your linoleum or wooden flooring with these. Clean your kitchen countertops with it as well. You can use this for unpainted wooden furniture. Just make sure you wipe it thoroughly, so it won’t stain. Remove Warts Warts are icky and unsightly. There are numerous around the house items you can use to remove them. Old tea bags are one example. Soak them in hot water, then put over your wart for 20 to 30 minutes at a time. Make sure you dispose of the tea bag after using it on the wart. You can’t say it works as great (or as quick) as vinegar, but it’s worth a try! Deodorize Your Place Tea bags soak in water, but they can also soak in the stuffy and stinky smell of shoes or closets. Place a few unwrapped and unused tea bags on a small platter, then put this inside the closet. If it’s shoes, place one bag in every shoe.

It can go away on its own, but if you want to quicken the healing process, soak a used tea bag, then bite down on it. The tea’s healing properties will soothe the pain and make the sore go away faster. This method also helps stop a pulled tooth from bleeding. Sunburn And Acne Solution Old tea bags can also be added to your bath, too! If you’ve got a bad case of acne, or if your skin is raw and red from tanning at the beach, use the old tea bags to provide relief. Wash off the affected areas with cold tea made from used bags. After several applications, you’ll feel the cooling and calming effects. Fertilize Your Plants Here’s a great way to reuse all the old tea bags you have around the house: use them for your plants. Tea bags can be used as an organic fertilizer for potted Whatever your travel house plants, with many stimulant benefits from the nutrients in the ingredients. You can even remove the bags and mix the tea leaves inside with your soil, needs may be, leisure, helping absorb water and retaining moisture. If your problem is leaking bottom corporate or insurance holes in the plant containers, you can use teabags to prevent the leakage. This also works well for hanging planters. give Darlene a call. Show Your Artistic Side Why do we throw away old tea bags immediately, in the first place? Because they stain! Leave it on a surface for too long, and expect a nasty unpleasant surprise.
