Sure, marriage can be fun some of the time. Trouble is, you’re married all of the time. I believe everything happens for a reason. Usually, the reason is someone messed up. Why adopt a highway? I already drive like I own the road. Most stress is caused by 3 things: money, family and family with no money. Only on a cruise ship will you pay hundreds of dollars to sleep in a closet! Thanks to the Internet, you can get hopelessly in debt without having to leave your house. Apparently, windshield washer fluid works better than spit on a mitten. Jesus Knows You’re Here A burglar broke into a house one night. He shined his flashlight around, looking for valuables when a voice in the dark said, ‘Jesus knows you’re here.’ He nearly jumped out of his skin, clicked his flashlight off, and froze. When he heard nothing more, after a bit, he shook his head and continued. Just as he pulled the stereo out so he could disconnect the wires, clear as a bell he heard ‘Jesus is watching you.’ Freaked out, he shined his light around frantically, looking for the source of the voice. Finally, in the corner of the room, his flashlight beam came to rest on a parrot.. ‘Did you say that?’ he hissed at the parrot. ‘Yep’, the parrot confessed, then squawked, ‘I’m just trying to warn you that he is watching you.’ The burglar relaxed. ‘Warn me, huh? Who in the world are you ?’ ‘Moses,’ replied the bird. ‘Moses?’ the burglar laughed. ‘What kind of people would name a bird Moses?’ ‘The kind of people that would name a Rottweiler Jesus.’

Female Brain Cell Once upon a time there was a female brain cell who accidentally ended up in a man’s head. She looked around nervously but it was all empty and quiet. “Hello? she cried, but no answer. “Is there anyone here? she cried a little louder, but still no answer. Now, the female brain cell started to feel alone and scared, so she yelled at the top of her voice, “HELLO! IS THERE ANYONE HERE? Then she heard a very faint voice echo from far, far away... “We’re down here!

An alternative to bobbing for apples is to hang them by their stems with thread from the ceiling and let party goers try to bite them! It is actually harder than bobbing in water and it’s also more sanitary.

If you have porch steps, make sure they are easy to navigate for your trick or treat guests. Use jacko-lanterns to light the stairs. Put a high intensity glow stick inside for light. Make sure you set a time that your kids should be home if they go trick or treating with a group or are at a party. Make sure they know how important it is for them to be home on time or to call home if there is a problem. Better yet, buy a set of walkie-talkies! www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Special Feature Special Feature HALLOWEEN Halloween Safety for Kids & Teens Kids love Halloween! They get to dress up and get free candy! What a perfect holiday! Give your kids some precious Halloween memories that they’ll have for life. Some of you kids already know things that you can do to be safe, like how to cross the street, not to talk to or go with strangers and things like that. But we adults know how exciting Halloween can be and that can make you forget to be careful. Here are some tips that we have, just for you kids, to help keep you safe on Halloween night! Some of these ideas are called “common sense” ideas. That means that they are things that you should know and use every day in life. You are never too young to learn! Never, ever go into a strangers house or even ring their door for treats unless your parents are with you and say that it’s okay. There are some people in this world who aren’t very nice to kids and you have to be careful. Always make sure that your mom or dad is within sight when you go out trick-or-treating. Be careful when you cross a street. Make sure to look in both directions and make sure that there are no cars coming. If you have a little brother or sister with you, take their hand and help them get across the street, too. If the street has a stop light, wait until the cross walk light tells you that it’s okay to cross now, but still check before you cross by looking both ways. If you are an older kid or young teen, and going out with friends, make sure that your parents know where you are going and who you are going with. This may seem like a pain but they are your parents and they love you. They just want you to be safe. If you can drive and are taking a bunch of friends to a party, make sure that you have enough gas to get there. You don’t want to run out on a dark street, all alone, like a bad horror movie! If your parents give you a curfew, be home when they say. It builds trust between you and them and they are doing it for your own safety. If you are going to be late, call them and let them know. Vandalism is never cool! Throwing eggs at cars and houses is not cool. Someone has to clean it up and it could be you, if you get caught. You can also be arrested and punished as a juvenile. So, don’t think that it’s fun, only if you can get away with it. It’s never the right thing to do! Think about how you would feel if someone did that to your house and how bad it would make you feel. Hurting animals is never acceptable behaviour! Some people use Halloween as an excuse to hurt cats and that is just wrong! Not only is it illegal in most places to hurt or torture animals and punishable by law, you should never hurt a helpless living thing. Have fun on Halloween but keep it safe, have some good, clean fun and your parents will trust you for many Halloweens to come! Showing them how responsible you can be will give you a feeling of pride and make them see just how adult you really are. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Pumpkin Seeds Preparing pumpkin seeds is super easy. What I like best is that pumpkin seeds are what you would regularly throw away. I mean, what other activity do you get to reuse the waste product and eat it?! Before you eat the pumpkin seeds, you have to roast them. Don’t worry, it is easy! What you need to make great pumpkin seeds: 1. An oven 2. A baking sheet 3. Melted Butter 4. Seeds 5. Salt 6. Seasoning Here is how to do it: 1. Do a mediocre job of separating the goo and guts from the actual seeds. Don’t rinse them or they won’t taste as good. 2. Add salt to the seeds. I suggest 1 teaspoon for every 2 cups of seeds. 3. Add the melted butter. I use 1 tablespoon. 4. Mix the salt (and/or seasonings), melted butter and seeds and then spread them on the baking sheet. 5. Roast them at 300 degrees for about 30 minutes. Stir them halfway through. 6. Take them out and eat them. Seasoning Ideas: Sweet and Spicy: quarter cup sugar, 1 teaspoon salt and half teaspoon cayenne pepper. Curry: 1 tablespoon curry powder, 1 teaspoon salt Spicy Garlic: 1 tablespoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon salt, half teaspoon

Fall is the most beautiful time of year, with the leaves on the trees turning the most vibrant hues of yellow, red and orange. The berries, peaches, plums and apricots scrumptious and juicy are just perfect for canning and the perfect time to enjoy luscious fruit desserts. But hold the phone! What about having a dessert for breakfast?? Sounds like a plan to me. That homemade dessert bubbling goodness and the fruity aroma that fills your home makes you feel all warm and happy inside. What a wonderful way to start your day. Enjoy these luscious and yummy (breakfast) fruit desserts.

BLUEBERRY BREAKFAST BREADSTICKS

11 oz pkg of Refrigerated Bread Sticks 1/3 Cup Blueberry Preserves 1 tsp Grated Fresh Lemon Rind ¼ tsp Ground Cinnamon ¾ Cup Powdered Sugar ¼ tsp Almond Extract 2 – 3 tsp Milk 1 Tbsp Coarse Pearl Sugar Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Line a baking sheet (at least 16”x14”) with parchment paper. Unroll bread stick dough; separate into 12 strips. Lay strips, without touching each other, on prepared baking sheet. In a small bowl, stir together preserves, lemon rind, and cinnamon. Spoon mixture evenly down the center of each strip. Carefully lift each strip and twist several times; lay back down, pressing down ends firmly. Bake 13-14 minutes or until golden. While bread sticks are baking, in a small bowl place powdered sugar and almond extract. Add milk a teaspoon at a time until mixture can be drizzled. Add a little additional milk, if mixture is too thick. When bread sticks are done, and keeping them on baking sheet, drizzle each evenly with icing. Sprinkle each with pearl sugar. Remove bread sticks to a serving platter and serve warm. Makes 12 bread sticks.

BREAKFAST BERRY CRISP

If you like pie for breakfast, this not-too-sweet berry treat is a wonderful way to start the day. 2 Cup fresh strawberries, halved 1 Cup blueberries 1 Cup raspberries ¼ Cup corn starch 4 tsp sugar 1 Cup uncooked rolled oats 1/3 Cup whole wheat flour 5 Tbsp butter blend www.thenewsyneighbour.com

1/2 Cup dark brown sugar, packed 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 tsp cinnamon 1/2 Cup pecans or walnuts Preheat oven to 350°. Add berries to a large bowl. Toss with cornstarch and the sugar (or Splenda). If you are using a greater portion of tart berries, you will need to add more sweetener. Pour mixture into a low baking dish. Using same bowl, combine oats, flour, brown sugar or splenda, pecans, salt, cinnamon. Dice cold butter (this can be made with a good oil, like walnut, for a vegan dish) and cut into mixture until the butter is incorporated (it will look like a course meal.) I use my hands to mash the butter into the mix. Pour the topping over the berries and evenly distribute without packing it down. Bake for 35 minutes at 350 until the berries bubble and top begins to brown. Who said you could not eat Black Forest Cake for Breakfast?!

BLACK FOREST CHERRY PASTRY DESSERT

It needs to stand at least 6 hours for the crackers to soften into a flaky pastry, so you need to plan this one ahead of time. But, it’s easy for the kids to make. Make sure you get the soda crackers with the unsalted tops! To get the thick chocolate layer, I prepared 2 packages of instant pudding. Normally, though, you just need one package. For a diet version of this Black Forest dessert, use lowfat instant chocolate pudding and low-fat Cool Whip. It’s just as delicious. 1 pkg Soda Crackers (unsalted tops) 1 pkg instant chocolate pudding mix 2 Cups milk – to make pudding 1 carton Cool Whip – large – 1 litre 1 can cherry pie filling Line bottom of 9 x 13 inch baking dish with soda crackers. Prepare pudding mix according to package instructions. Gently pour 1/2 over crackers and spread. Gently spread 1/2 carton of Cool Whip over pudding. Cover Cool Whip layer with a layer of soda crackers. Gently pour remaining pudding over crackers. Cover with remaining Cool Whip. Cover with Saran Wrap and refrigerate at least 6 hours, preferably overnight. Serve, topping each piece with some cherry pie filling. Use low-fat Cool Whip and low-fat pudding if desired.

Clown: Use clothes that are

too large. Decorate by using either fabric paint or markers. For those who dare, try tie-die. Tack on some large pop-poms, add a cheap wig, hat, and makeup. You may also stuff the extra space in clothing with tissue. However, this could be messy if you need to make a "pit-stop".

Scarecrow:

Over-sized flannel shirt, faded blue jeans with patches, a rope for a belt and to tie at the cuffs of the jeans and sleeves. Stuff the shirt and jeans with plastic grocery bags or paper, and add a little bit of straw to hang out of jeans and shirt. Don’t forget some makeup!

1960s Hippy: This one is

hard, especially since it’s back in style! What is real, and what is costume? ;) Tie-die clothing, a long wig (in the old days we called a "fall"), sandals, a headband, anything with fringe on it (vests, purse...), and light coloured sun glasses.

Nerd:

Slick back the hair, grab some pants that are too short, a white shirt, white socks, penny loafers, or lace up oxfords, pocket protector, with lots of pens, dark rim glasses (don't forget to tape the corners!), and a briefcase or backpack for treat bag.

Japanese Doll: Black wig with the

hair pulled back in a bun, paint your face white and add red rosy cheeks.

Page 16

Mummy: Wrap yourself in

white bandages (use rolls of gauze). Use splotches of green paint for "mould". Use white make-up on face with "age lines" drawn on. The stiff-legged gait works perfectly.

Basket of laundry:

Clean or dirty: Wear sweat pants and sweatshirt if it is cold outside, or tights and a turtleneck if you will be in a warm building. Take an inexpensive (thin) plastic laundry basket and cut a hole in the bottom that you can fit through. Make it small enough so that is "sits" on your hips after you pull it over your head. October is a wonderful month, with all the excitement of Halloween, and on October 10th the celebration of Thanksgiving. Everyone has settled into the routine of back to school and just think - Christmas is only two months away! Now, I know the kids always want the newest and best when it comes to Halloween costumes, but you don’t need to spend a fortune to dress them in the rage of the season. Here are a few really easy and inexpensive ideas for the spookiest, wackiest and most original costumes you can make at home. And remember, you don’t have to be a professional costume maker in order to create amazing homemade costumes. If you've got the motivation to create your own costumes, you and your children can have a lot of fun creating. Use your imagination!

Bubble Bath: Take

a white laundry basket and cut out the bottom (be sure to tape the cut edges with masking tape so you don’t scratch yourself). Attach two wide strips of material (white) to front and back of basket (to be used as shoulder straps). Attach white, light peach, and pearl balloons to the straps using safety pins (these are the bubbles). Wear a white bodysuit, and white pantyhose. Put on your house shoes, shower cap, and grab your scrub brush. (If the laundry basket has holes in it, cover the inside with poster board).

Make Your Own Make-up:

You will need: - 2 tablespoons of soft shortening - 4 tablespoons of cornstarch - Food colouring Mix shortening and cornstarch. Separate the recipe into different cups, add food colouring. Wash your face and any area that you will be applying makeup to and then dry thoroughly. Apply a thin coat of cold face cream to the entire face (any brand will do). Using a cotton ball, gently pat cornstarch over your face. Keep your eyes closed. Apply makeup with fingers tips.

Edible Eyeball Treats

3.4-ounce box vanilla pudding mix, Jelly beans, LifeSavers Gummies, Plastic eggs, 2 empty egg cartons Prepare the pudding according to the package directions. For each eye, fit a jellybean into the center of a LifeSavers Gummies candy and place it in a plastic egg half. Fill the eggcup with the pudding, and then place the egg halves in an egg carton in the freezer until they're firm (about 3 hours). Remove the egg halves from the freezer and let them sit at room temperature for about 3 to 5 minutes. With the back of a fork, gently press down on the edge of the pudding, rolling the frozen ball out of the eggcup. If you're not serving them right away, place the eyes in a freezer-safe dish in the freezer until you're ready. www.thenewsyneighbor.com

Calgary Flames not built for success!

So how do you build a winner in today’s NHL? As I have mentioned many times on my radio show, it’s easy to get cheaper and younger but it’s very difficult to get better! A respected NHL general manager once shared with me his winning formula for success in today’s salary cap world. He called it “the Four, Two, One, Two.” Four defensemen, two center, one goalie and two extra forwards. This would be the core of your team and they would earn around 65 percent of your salary cap. The rest of your roster would have to be filled with a mixture of youth and character veterans who are solid two way players. This model certainly worked for the two Stanley Cup finalists last season. The Boston Bruins had Zdeno Chara ($6.9 million), Tomas Kaberle ($4.2), Dennis Seidenberg ($3.2) and Andrew Ference ($2.2) on defense. Patrice Bergeron ($5) and David Krejci ($3.7) at center. Tim Thomas ($5) in goal and the two extra forwards were Milan Lucic ($4) and Nathan Horton ($4). The total price tag was approximately $38.2 million about 64 percent of their cap hit as they did acquire Kaberle at the trading deadline. As for the Vancouver Canacks, they had Dan Hamuis ($4.5 million), Christian Ehrhoff ($3.1), Alex Edler ($3.2) and Kevin Bieksa ($3.5) on defense. Henrik Sedin ($6.1) and Ryan Kesler ($5.0) at center. Roberto Luongo ($5.3) in goal and the two extra forwards were Daniel Sedin ($6.1) and Mikael Samuelsson ($2.5). The total price tag was 39.3 million, just slightly higher than the Bruins core. I am still convinced the Canacks will win the cup if they don’t lose Hamuis and Kesler is not injured. As for the Calgary Flames, it’s clear to see how poorly constructed they were by former G.M. Daryl Sutter. Sutter was never able to address the center ice position in the organization and it’s still a major issue heading into the 2011 - 2012 season. Last year on the blue line, the Flames employed Jay Bouwmeester ($6.6 million), Robin Regehr ($4.0), Cory Sarich ($3.6) and Mark Giordano ($1.0). Olli Jokinen ($3) and Matt Stajan ($3.5) at center. Mikka Kiprusoff ($5.8) in goal and the two extra forwards were Jarome Iginla ($7) and Rene Bourque ($3.3). The total price tag for the Flames core was $37.8 million. Not exactly the best bang for your buck when you consider Bouwmeester is one of the most overrated and Page 18

The Newsy Neighbour

overpaid players in the game and Matt Stajan is a third or fourth line player at best. In my opinion, the Flames are in a worse position this year. The core (judged by salary, not performance) is Boumeester ($6.6), Giordano ($4), Sarich ($3.6) and Anton Babchuk ($2.5) on defense. Jokinen ($3) and Stajan ($3.5) at center. Kiprusoff ($5.8) in goal and Iginla ($7) and Alex Tanguay ($3.5) as the two extra forwards. This year’s core checks in $39.5 million dollars and your back end is weaker and you still have the same old issues down the middle. Jarome Iginla said it best last month when asked at the Flames charity golf tournament what he thought of this year’s team. “I think we’re going to be a good team,” was the captain’s response. Not we’re going to be a good team, “I THINK we’re going to be a good team.” Not exactly a ringing endorsement. Flames GM Jay Feaster is one of the most positive guys in the game. He’s on record as saying the Flames will be a playoff team this year. He’s been singing the same tune all summer. “This team is a lot closer than most people think,” he preaches. “I believe we have a good room, a good coach and we’ll be the team we were in the second half.” Of course what he doesn’t mention is the Flames feasted on the worst teams in the league in the second half like the Oilers, the Avs, and the Blues. Against the good or the elite teams in the league, the Flames had a losing record! I hate to be a downer, but Feaster is sending the wrong message to Flames fans. As I mentioned in an earlier article, the entire organization is in denial. This team is not close to being a contender. If everything goes right for the Calgary Flames this season, if Kiprusoff stands on his head, Iginla has another 40 goal season and the team stays healthy, then yes there is a chance the Flames could finish with 95 or 96 points and sneak into the playoffs. However, if it goes the other way and this team is hit with a couple of key injuries, the Flames could be closer to a lottery pick than a playoff spot.

Special Feature Special Feature Thanksgiving I am Thankful For... The mess to clean up after a party, because it means I have been surrounded by friends. The taxes I pay, because it means that I’m employed. The clothes that fit a little too snug, because it means I have enough to eat. My shadow who watches me work, because it means I am out in the sunshine. The spot I find at the far end of the parking lot, because it means I am capable of walking. All the complaining I hear about our government, because it means we have freedom of speech. That lady behind me in church who sings off key, because it means that I can hear. Lawn that needs mowing, windows that need cleaning and gutters that need fixing, because it means I have a home. My huge heating bill, because it means that I am warm. Weariness and aching muscles at the end of the day, because it means that I have been productive. The alarm that goes off in the early morning hours, because it means that I am alive.

A Frugal Thanksgiving Dinner A memorable Thanksgiving doesn’t have to break the bank. Here are some tips for a frugal, relaxed, and memorable Thanksgiving dinner. 1. Plan Ahead: Although this may be late, the best time to start shopping for Thanksgiving dinner is the weeks leading up to it. A few weeks before Thanksgiving you will see sales and coupons for many traditional Thanksgiving dinner items. When you see them, just clip them and make the purchases along with your weekly shopping. 2. Avoid Convenience Foods: Convenience foods such as prepackaged items can cost you much more than if you were to make foods from scratch. Avoiding these convenience foods can save you a lot of money on your Thanksgiving dinner. 3. Buy Just Enough: Often we buy much more than we can eat, buying too much turkey only to throw it out later isn’t very frugal. Buy just enough to do the job Page 20

The Newsy Neighbour

and save! Not sure how much is enough? You can use the turkey calculator to calculate exactly how much you should buy. 4. Use Leftovers for Future Meals: Even if you try to just buy enough, chances are you will still have leftovers. If you do, don’t just throw them away, use it for future meals. Use the leftover vegetables and mix them together to use in soups; you can freeze the left-over turkey for future meals as well. 5. Have a Pot Luck Style Dinner: Some may not like this idea, but for me Thanksgiving dinner is about the company and not so much about the food. So if you are hosting the dinner this year see if you can do a potluck dinner, you can assign everyone a dish while you make the turkey. This will not only save everyone money but also time and hassle. Thanksgiving does not have to be expensive or stressful, just keep things simple and plan ahead. Enjoy your company and spend some time reflecting on things you are thankful for! HAPPY THANKSGIVING! www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Aprons I don’t think kids today know what an apron is. The principal use of Grandma’s apron was to protect the dress underneath, but along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven. It was wonderful for drying children’s tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears. From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven. When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids. And when the weather was cold, grandma wrapped it around her arms. Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron. From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls. In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples or pecans that had fallen from the trees. When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds. When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner. It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that ‘old-time apron’ that served so many purposes. REMEMBER: Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool. Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw. Today’s generation would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron, but I never heard about anyone catching anything from an Apron!

His & Hers Diaries HER DIARY : Tonight, I thought my husband was acting weird. We had made plans to meet at a bar to have a drink. I was shopping with my friends all day long, so I thought he was upset at the fact that I was a bit late, but he made no comment on it. Conversation wasn’t flowing, so I suggested that we go somewhere quiet so we could talk. He agreed, but he didn’t say much. I asked him what was wrong. He said, ‘Nothing.’ I asked him if it was my fault that he was upset. He said he wasn’t upset, that it had nothing to do with me, and not to worry about it. On the way home, I told him that I loved him. He smiled slightly, and kept driving. I can’t explain his behaviour. I don’t know why he didn’t say, ‘I love you, too.’ When we got home, I felt as if I had lost him completely, as if he wanted nothing to do with me anymore. He just sat there quietly, and watched TV. He continued to seem distant and absent. Finally, with silence all around us, I decided to go to bed. About 15 minutes later, he came to bed. To my surprise, he responded to my caress, and we made love. But I still felt that he was distracted, and his thoughts were somewhere else. He fell asleep - I cried. I don’t know what to do. I’m almost sure that his thoughts are with someone else. My life is a disaster. HIS DIARY : Frustrating day! The Habs lost. At least the day ended good!

Is this a jellyfish bad day? Rob is a commercial saturation diver for Global Divers in Louisiana. He performs underwater repairs on offshore drilling rigs. Below is an E-mail he sent to his sister. Hi Sis, Just another note from your bottom-dwelling brother. Last week I had a bad day at the office. I know you’ve been feeling down lately at work, so I thought I would share my dilemma with you to make you realize it’s not so bad after all. Before I can tell you what happened to me, I first must bore you with a few technicalities of my job. As you know, my office lies at the bottom of the sea. I wear a suit to the office. It’s a wet suit. This time of year the water is quite cool. So what we do to keep warm is this: We have a diesel powered industrial water heater. This $20,000 piece of equipment sucks the water out of the sea. It heats it to a delightful temperature...It then pumps it down to the diver through a garden hose, which is taped to the air hose. Now this sounds like a darn good plan, and I’ve used it several times with no complaints. What I do, when I get o the bottom and start working, is take the hose and stuff it down the back of my wet suit. This floods my whole suit with warm water... It’s like working in a Jacuzzi. Everything was going well until all of a sudden, my butt started to itch. So, of course, I scratched it. This only made things worse. Within a few seconds my butt started to burn. I pulled the hose out from my back, but the damage was done. In agony I realized what had happened. The hot water machine had sucked up a jellyfish and pumped it into my suit. Now, since I don’t have any hair Page 24

on my back, the jellyfish couldn’t stick to it... However, the crack of my butt was not as fortunate. When I scratched what I thought was an itch, I was actually grinding the jellyfish into the crack of my butt. I informed the dive supervisor of my dilemma over the communicator. His instructions were unclear due to the fact that he, along with five other divers, were all laughing hysterically. Needless to say I aborted the dive. I was instructed to make three agonizing in-water decompression stops totalling thirty-five minutes before I could reach the surface to begin my chamber dry decompression. When I arrived at the surface, I was wearing nothing but my brass helmet. As I climbed out of the water, the medic, with tears of laughter running down his face, handed me a tube of cream and told me to rub it on my butt as soon as I got in the chamber. So, next time you’re having a bad day at work, think about how much worse it would be if you had a jellyfish shoved in your butt. Now repeat to yourself, ‘I love my job, I love my job, I love my job.’ Now whenever you have a bad day, ask yourself, is this a jellyfish bad day?

I am an orange

Good day to you my name is Othello Orange – my name means prosperous and believe me all my relatives have been very prosperous since our meager beginning many thousands of years ago in Asia. Back then we grew in the regions of southern China and Indonesia and after we did some exploring and some of my cousins moved to India. We like to get around and tried out the Middle East around the 9th century and then into Europe in the 15th century, by the Moors, Portuguese and the Italian traders who found us on their voyages to Asia and the Middle East. We like to be anywhere hot and decided to holiday in the Caribbean Islands after Christopher Columbus brought some of our seeds there on his second voyage to the New World. The Spanish explorers wanted to share us and brought my aunts and uncles to Florida in the 16th century, while Spanish missionaries brought us to California in the 18th century – this was the beginning of our immense popularity and now these two states are the largest growers of my brothers and sisters – we love lots of nice warm sunshine. Before the 20th century, we were very expensive so lots of people could not afford us – we were a special treat and eaten on special holidays such as Christmas. But – now thank goodness there are so many of us we are more affordable and now everyone can love and share us. Lots of really nice places grow us commercially and the largest are the United States, Brazil, Mexico, Spain, China and Israel. We are sooo juicy and sweet and have tons of Vitamin C – we are the perfect snack and add a special tang to many recipes; it is no wonder that we are one of the most popular fruits in the world. Now, I know we are very pretty but holy smokes we are filled with goodness - in recent research studies, our healing properties have been associated with a wide variety of phytonutrient compounds, we have Citrus flavanones that include the molecules hesperetin, naringenin, anthocyanins, hydroxycinnamic acids and a variety of polyphenols. That may not mean much to you but you should know that makes us a powerful antioxidant. Arguably, the most important flavanone and herperidin have been shown to lower high blood pressure as well as cholesterol. Just one of us supplies 116.2% of the daily value for vitamin C - do you know just how important vitamin C and oranges are for good health? Vitamin C is the primary water-soluble antioxidant in the body, disarming free radicals and preventing damage in the aqueous environment both inside and outside cells. Inside cells, a potential result of free radical damage to DNA is cancer. Especially in areas of the body where cellular turnover is especially rapid, such as the digestive system, preventing DNA mutations translates into preventing cancer. This is why a good intake of vitamin C is associated with a reduced risk of colon cancer. It also prevents the free radical damage that triggers the inflammatory cascade so is most wonderful for reducing severity of inflammatory conditions, such as asthma, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis. Just a little tip for the best DNA protection, skip the vitamin C-fortified bottled drinks and enjoy a glass of real freshly squeezed orange or just eat me. I also help reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke and cancer. Holy orange juice – I offer protection against mouth, larynx and pharynx and stomach cancers. There has been lots of studies about us and one report shows one extra serving of fruit a day will reduced the risk of stroke by 4%, and this increased by 5-6 times for citrus fruits, reaching a 19% reduction of risk for stroke from consuming one extra serving of citrus fruit a day. Are you ready for this I can help you with arthritis, asthma, Alzheimer's disease and cognitive impairment, Parkinson's disease, macular degeneration, diabetes, gallstones, multiple sclerosis, cholera, gingivitis, optimal lung function, cataracts, ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. I’m not just another pretty fruit! You need to take me seriously and eat me everyday. Just to help you out I have shared some orange recipes from my grandma, auntie and sisters. You will really enjoy these and keep healthy at the same time – it doesn’t get any better than that! Well, I’ve got to roll – see you around. ~ Othello Orange

Cat Lover?

Calling in sick to work makes me uncomfortable. No matter how legitimate my excuse, I always get the feeling that my boss thinks I’m lying. On one recent occasion, I had a valid reason but lied anyway, because the truth was just too darned humiliating. I simply mentioned that I had sustained a head injury, and I hoped I would feel up to coming in the next day. By then, I reasoned, I could think up a doozy to explain the bandage on the top of my head. The accident occurred mainly because I had given in to my wife’s wishes to adopt a cute little kitty. Initially, the new acquisition was no problem. Then, one morning, I was taking my shower after breakfast when I heard my wife, Deb, call out to me from the kitchen. ‘Honey! The

garbage disposal is dead again. Please come reset it.’ ‘You know where the button is,’ I protested through the shower pitter-patter and steam. ‘Reset it yourself!’ ‘But I’m scared!’ she persisted. ‘What if it starts going and sucks me in?’ There was a meaningful pause and then, ‘C’mon, it’ll only take you a second.’ So out I came, dripping wet and butt naked, hoping that my silent outraged nudity would make a statement about how I perceived her behaviour as extremely cowardly. Sighing loudly, I squatted down and stuck my head under the sink to find the button. It is the last action I remember performing. It struck without warning, and without any respect to my circumstances. No, it wasn’t the hexed disposal, drawing me into its gnashing metal teeth. It was our new kitty, who discovered the fascinating dangling objects she spied hanging between my legs. She had been poised around the corner and stalked me as I reached under the sink. And, at the precise moment when I was most vulnerable, she leapt at the toys I unwittingly offered and snagged them with her needle-like claws. I lost all rational thought to control orderly bodily movements, blindly rising at a violent rate of speed, with the full weight of a kitten hanging from my masculine region. Wild animals are sometimes faced with a ‘fight or flight’ syndrome. Men, in this predicament, choose only the ‘flight’ option. I know this from experience. I was fleeing straight up into the air when the sink and cabinet bluntly and forcefully impeded my ascent. The impact knocked me out cold. When I awoke, my wife and the paramedics stood over me. Now there are not many things in this life worse than finding oneself lying on the kitchen floor butt naked in front of a group of ‘beenthere, done-that’ paramedics. Even worse, having been fully briefed by my wife, the paramedics were all snorting loudly as they tried to conduct their work, all the while trying to suppress their hysterical laughter... and not succeeding. Somehow I lived through it all. A few days later I finally made it back in to the office, where colleagues tried to coax an explanation out of me about my head injury. I kept silent, claiming it was too painful to talk about, which it was. ‘What’s the matter?’ They all asked, ‘Cat got your tongue? If they only knew! Why is it that only the women laugh at this?

Dishwashers Maybe not so surprising, many people consider this to be the most important appliance in the kitchen. The range and fridge are important, but washing dishes??? New dishwashers use less water and energy and are very efficient. The trick is, they can take longer to do a load of dishes. Some brands at the maximum cleaning cycle can take up to eight hours to do a load. As a note, dishwashers are more efficient and far more sanitary than washing dishes by hand. There are many features built into modern dishwashers. The consumer is best served by knowing what features they use, example: If fine dishes, China, and crystal wear are used fairly often, a dishwasher with a China cycle can be a valuable setting that increases the lifespan of your fine Chinaware. Another valuable feature can be steam. Ideally, steam should be at the start of a cleaning cycle. This loosens and softens baked-on food and supports deep cleaning. Hints about dishwashers Over a year ago, phosphates were removed from laundry and dishwasher detergents. While this may be good for the environment, it is bad for cleaning. Areas with hard water have noticed it the most. Generally, a white film is noticed on dishes (mainly glasses), and they are not coming out as clean as they once were. Manufacturers are working hard to create effective detergents and some seem to work better in hard water areas than others. The brand name power pack style seems to be the most effective. Sometimes adding a little baking soda at the start of the wash can help. Using a dishwasher cleaner can help by supporting a good water flow and drain but will not make up for detergent issues. In most cases, the dishwasher water supply connection is under the sink off the hot water line. Running the kitchen tap until hot water runs out can help ensure that the first dishwasher fill is hot water. It can be a big problem if most of the first fill is cold water. Don’t pre-rinse your dishes. Simply scraping them off works the best. Detergent needs food particles to work on. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

MY FAVOURITE – FABULOUS – FANTASTIC AND FUN STUFF This one is a no brainer! Of course one of my most Favourite – Fabulous – Fantastic and Fun things is Thanksgiving! Isn’t it yours and every other turkey lover in the world? Now, I know Thanksgiving isn’t just about the turkey – it’s a very old tradition and a time to give thanks to God, friends, and family. In Europe, festivals were held before and after the harvest cycles to give thanks for a good harvest, to rejoice together after much hard work with the rest of the community and the Native Americans also celebrated the end of a harvest season. Thanksgiving Day in Canada has been a holiday on the second Monday of October since 1957. A common image seen at this time of year is a cornucopia, or horn, filled with seasonal fruit and vegetables. This represents the “Horn of Plenty”, which was a symbol of bounty and plenty in ancient Greece. Turkeys, pumpkins, ears of corn and large displays of food are also used to symbolize Thanksgiving Day. “Gobble, gobble, gobble” is the sound a turkey makes, and the same sound you will hear at our Thanksgiving table every year. All the kids and grandparents come to the house to celebrate and we have our own type of festival, which includes turkey, pumpkin pie, spaghetti squash, sweet yams, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. There are so many different types of stuffing out there and even though I make the same basic stuffing each year with onions, celery, sage, marjoram, thyme, and bread crumbs, it never tastes exactly the same! I’m thinking I may change it up a bit this year and try a totally different stuffing and this is the one I finally settled on – sound too good not to try.

If chorizo is not your sausage of choice, you could use any type of sausage you prefer. If you cannot find cornbread at the store you would have to make your own the night before and let it dry out. 2 loaves Cornbread, homemade or store-bought, 4 Tbsp. olive oil, 1 Tbsp. dried thyme, salt and pepper, to taste 1 ½ pounds chorizo or Andouille sausages, halved lengthwise and cut into ½ inch pieces, 2 Tbsp. Butter, 3 Cups chopped red onion, 6 ribs celery chopped, 1 Cup dried apricots, halved, 1 Cup dried cherries, 1 Cup chopped pecan halves, ½ Cup chicken broth Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cut the cornbread into 1-inch cubes. (You should have about 12 cups.) Place the cubes in a large bowl and toss with 2 tablespoons olive oil and the thyme. Season with salt and pepper. Spread the cubes in 1 layer on 2 baking sheets; bake for 15 to 20 minutes or until lightly toasted, shaking the pans occasionally. Cool and return to the bowl. Meanwhile, cook the chorizo in 2 batches in a non-stick skillet over medium-high heat until browned. Using a slotted spoon, remove the chorizo and add to the bowl of cornbread, discarding any fat. Place remaining olive oil and butter in a heavy saucepan. Wilt the onions and celery over medium-low heat for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Then stir in the apricots and cherries; cook for 5 to 10 minutes longer. Carefully fold into the cornbread along with the pecans, using a rubber spatula. Slowly drizzle in the broth until the stuffing is moist to your liking. Season with salt and pepper. Cool to room temperature before stuffing the turkey. By: Kathryn Hartwell

What is this strange celebration called Halloween? It’s the silliest event I’ve ever seen! Children dress up in costumes really weird and funny, Like ghosts, spiders and a very scary mummy. They run around the streets after dark, They try to scare each other and make all the dogs bark. They bang on neighbours doors and yell out, “Trick or Treat.” And people give them candy and all things yummy and sweet. They wear their costumes to daycare, And they’re allowed to wear them in school, Where they parade around the halls and gym And break all sorts of school rules. I have a terrific idea, I know what I’m going to do. I’ll dress up in a “special costume” That looks just like you! BY PATRICIA MULLIN www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Kidney March 2011 I am not a hero, but on September 9, 10th and 11th I had the honour of eating food made and served by heroes. I had my blisters tended to by doctors who are the heads of our hospitals, working side-by with students, nurses and volunteers and they did it with the care and seriousness they would take into any operating room. You, without a doubt, are my heroes. There were heroes who drove from dusk to dawn in anything from a golf cart to an ambulance, they stirred Gatorade, and they cheered us on in costumes from fairies to ballerinas and when we thought we had nothing left, they gave us the strength to take one more step (I remember you, my little ballerina, may your life be full of joy and happiness in the knowledge you are a incredible hero.) My heroes took photos, ran errands and chased cattle off the roads. They did logistics, handled donations and listened to me whine when things didn’t go the way I thought they should. Heroes one and all, and on a hot day after marching and hydrating for hours on end, we arrived at one of our pit stops, missing our much beloved port-apotties (due to no ones fault), and as we watched you pull up, Toilet Man, we stood together as one, cheering as we never had before, and for those minutes we watched you, you were the greatest hero of all. My life time heroes are the women in my life; Mom, you never gave up on me and look what I achieved! You always inspired me and I love you. Karen, things were not always easy, but you were always there, and I love you. Carolyn, my wife, what can I say to you; you who has held my hand through more trips to the hospital than I can count. You’ve eaten more hospital food than any person should have to in a life time. Without you, I would not be here. I LOVE YOU! These heroes came together to support over 270 courageous souls who came out to walk 100 kilometers in 3 days with the common goal of stamping out kidney disease before it affects your family, like it affected those who marched with us. You are my heroes, and for 3 days together, we fought incredible heat and horrible pain. We massed as one in battle against blisters and you are my family. I love you. Who am I? My name is Doug Davis and I am not a hero, but I was born with a Kidney disease. We are the family of the 2011 Kidney March and we are ruthless in our war, and believe me when I say, WE TAKE NO PRISONERS! And with Joyce to lead us into battle and your support, we cannot help but win this war! This is my thank you to all the people who made this possible, the heroes who donated and those who gave bottles when that was all they had, thank you. To Bob and Mary, Mike and Lynn, Greg, Rene, Ken, the Strathmore M & M Meats and The Strathmore Fire Department who made our BBQ success, thank you. Page 34

To our sponsors Brent and Winston at Advance Auto who are also our friends, thank you. To our Priest Jane and our family at St. Michael’s and All Angels, thank you so much. What do I tell you in the short amount of space I have about our 100 km weekend adventure? Well, we did it!!! Every stinking step and I wouldn’t change it for the world. Carolyn and I have raised around $5000 so far and it’s still not too late to help. You can still support us by going to www.kidneymarch. ca. You should find me under “Incredibly Handsome Marcher,” or under Carolyn’s or my name. All I can say is that something incredible happens when that many people come together in a common goal. You come to a wall and you think, I cannot go on. You sit down to wait for a ride and you watch as a sea of white shirts pass you by and each person that passes you has words of encouragement. You stand and find the strength take one more step. You feel like the world just fell on you and you can’t take the pain anymore and you look at the pride and the love in your wife’s face and you take one more step. A 70 year old woman in a white shirt walking for her reason stops, hugs you, kisses your cheek and says, “You can do it!” and come hell or high water, you find the strength to take another step. Before you know it, your first day is over and you have covered your first 35 kilometers. Second day was 38, the third 27, and you’re done. As far as we know, so far together we have raised $700,000, and the support is still rolling in. As I sit here with my feet soaking and tears in my eyes all I can say is thank you, thank you, thank you. If I missed thanking you, know it was not on purpose. If so few of us can do so much in one weekend, think what 1000 could do next year. If I can do it, and true, it was the hardest thing I have ever done, but also the greatest, you can do it too. Honest! And if you can’t, I’ll find someone like our buddy Hart who walked this year and we’ll carry you until you can! I don’t think I can ever say this enough, thank you, and may your lives and that of your children be free of any sickness for generations to come. Wishing you all the best, Doug & Carolyn Davis

This monthly column by Jody Brown, is designed to help you make better connections and live happier lives. Sometimes we just need to ask the question. Joanne (Jody) Brown is an NLP Master Practitioner and advanced Master Hypnotherapist with a Diploma in corrections. Dear Lifelines, I am so baffled! It seems that people just don’t understand that we are all connected. We all need to help each other out. How come this is such a difficult concept for some people? I just don’t get it. Asking for Help!!

“In the spiritual life nowhere do our ideals meet the actual more truly than in how we relate to each other, in how we make, sustain and are friends”.- James Ishmael Ford

Dear Help! Part of the difficulty of this concept boils down to how we were raised and what experiences we have had in life. Some people were raised to be independent, and never ask for help and learn to be self-sufficient and perhaps look at asking for help as a weakness. However, others raise their children to be more inter-dependent and community minded, working together with neighbours and family in order to reach goals and to lessen individual burdens. Some families have extended family living with them, sharing childcare with aunts, uncles and grandparents and generally have a strong sense of community and belonging. While some people don’t have family nearby, they might develop their own community through organizations, parent groups and rely on friends or co-workers to help them establish a strong sense of support. These supports give people many different opportunities to grow and experience life by sharing the different perspectives of others. Perhaps you might find a greater sense of connection through various groups like this in your community or in volunteering or helping out neighbours and friends. In recognizing the different views of other cultures and individual beliefs and values, we can begin to recognize and be aware of the many different perspectives that help create a diverse and healthy community. It will perhaps aid us in understanding the values of others and that there is not just one way of approaching things. In order to become more in-tune with people around us, perhaps we can all benefit by giving each other the gift of our time – a valuable commodity in our busy lives! By setting an example and reaching out to neighbours or friends who might need an extra hand or who have taken the risk in reaching out and asking for help, we show our children and those around us that we are willing to give back, willing to lend an ear or offer some support and willing to engage with those people around us that might need just a few words of encouragement or a simple task done to help them out. It’s better to take some kind of action than to ignore or do nothing. When any of us reach out and seek the support or help from someone, it’s a strong message to others that they are in need and in that moment they have an opportunity to better someone’s life. As an offshoot, many ‘helpers’ feel they gain far more in the positive way that they feel afterwards, than what they actually believe they have given in time or effort. There’s potential for another win-win situation! Thanks so much for your question! Lifelines

The Newsy Neighbour

Body Parts & Disease I have been writing Body Parts since May of 2010. I hope you have learned much more than you did before about your one and only precious body. Together we have explored our vital internal organs, our eyes, nose and ears, skin and blood, and all the systems within our body’s universe that keep us alive. I hope I have given you a different perspective about what happens within you body each and every day. Every minute and every second, your temple is working for you! I hope that by becoming more aware of your nervous system and digestive system, you have gone that extra mile to take better care of yourself by getting more sleep, eating nutritional foods, exercising and just overall caring more about yourself. But all good things must come to an end and the Body Parts column will now focus on diseases of your body. Now you will find out what will happen to your Body Parts if you decide not to take care of them! Now, not all diseases are caused by neglect – some people are predisposed to disease through DNA and heredity, but either way we will explore diseases of the body and causes. Our new column will be called Body Parts & Disease. We are at a place in history where overweight and obesity have become a global epidemic, affecting about a billion people worldwide. In Canada, more than 6 million people between 20 to 64 years old are overweight and another 2.8 million are obese. Together they represent 47% of the Canadian adult population. The prevalence in children is even more alarming. In 1998/99, the overweight and obesity rates among children ages 2 to 11 years old were 37% and 18%, respectively, compared to 35% and 15% for adults. According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada (2003), “the increasing number of overweight and obese Canadians now poses one of the greatest threats ever to public health in this country”. This is why our Body Parts column will now focus on diseases of the body. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Even more alarming is the fact that in 2011, approximately 84,800 Canadian women will be diagnosed with cancer, and an estimated 35,100 women will die of cancer. Approximately 93,000 Canadian men will be diagnosed with cancer, and an estimated 39,900 men will die of cancer. Lung, prostate, breast and colorectal cancer are the 4 most common cancer types in Canada and account for over 50% of all new cancer cases. Lung cancer accounts for over a quarter (27%) of all cancer deaths each year. Breast cancer accounts for over a quarter (28%) of new cancer cases in women. Prostate cancer accounts for over a quarter (27%) of new cancer cases in men. 40% of Canadian women and 45% of men will develop cancer during their lifetimes. An estimated 1 out of every 4 Canadians is expected to die from cancer. Now, isn’t that depressing? So through the new information in Body Parts, we’re hoping to help make a change in those stats, and yes, one person can make a difference. Start making your difference TODAY! By: Kathryn Hartwell

THE POTTY A little three year old boy is sitting on the toilet. His mother thinks he has been in there too long, so she goes in to see what’s up. The little boy is sitting on the toilet reading a book, but about every 15 seconds or so, he puts the book down, grips onto the toilet seat with his left hand and hits himself on the top of his head with his right hand. His mother says: “Billy, are you all right” You’ve been in here for a while” Billy says: “I’m fine, Mommy. Monthly Book Review by Derek Donais Join me each month as I review a great read. My passions are fantasy and science-fiction, but I do read other genres. Really, I do. I also lean toward local authors, when possible, as I think we have a wealth of artistic talent here in Alberta. I currently live in Strathmore with my wife, Connie, and my two children, Kieran and Maia-Lynn. I’ve been a teacher for most of the time we’ve lived in the province, which is over a decade now. My debut novel, MetalMagic: Talisman, was released in September, 2010, and I’m diligently working on the sequel—that is, when I’m not reading books or writing for my column. Yours in Truth, Derek Donais

The First Circle—Under a Blood-Red Moon Volume 1 of the Tenth Circle Project Eileen Bell, Ryan McFadden and Billie Milholland ebooktechnician.com, 2011 ASIN: B005KDXWEI (available in ebook format only)

A shunned police corporal. A violent criminal. A corrupt preacher. A genetically-enhanced woman. What could all four of these people possibly have in common? They’re associated in some way to The Tenth Circle Project, an unlikely, joint initiative undertaken by the not-so-twin cities of Hope and Glory. The Project is supposedly geared towards the creation of an alternative energy source that may not only prove extremely lucrative, but also a source of peace and healing between these long-hostile neighbours. The problem is, the Project seems to coincidentally be connected to a series of distressing and potentially disastrous events. The First Circle is Volume One of the Tenth Circle Project, “a serialized, shared-world ebook concept,” as described by its creators, Eileen Bell, Randy McCharles, Ryan McFadden and Billie Milholland. This first offering is composed of five short stories involving separate characters that narrate their experiences of the unusual and ominous goings-on in either Hope or Glory. Though the individual stories can occupy the space of several hours, or days, they all share a common point of intersection: a July evening that unfolds under the light of a blood-red moon, during which a major earthquake strikes. Written with a gritty, urban style, each selection offers a different perspective of the ongoing struggles between the twin cities and the personalities trapped within them. Hope, despite its name, is a forsaken place. Law and order, both commodities that can apparently be purchased there, are either maintained through brute force, or dispensed with altogether. Nowhere in Hope is this truer than the community of Purgatory, an especially sordid hive of illicit and immoral activity swarming with the refuse of humanity. Glory, on the other hand, is by all appearances the opposite, with its coffee shops, big-box stores and sprawling suburban neighbourhoods. Separated from its have-not sibling metropolis by a great, impassable chasm, a lone bridge spans the distance between the two. Glory’s police forces, supposedly more refined and subtle in their methods than their Hope counterparts, keep a wary eye on their bridge checkpoints to ensure that none of Hope’s denizens are allowed to infect their fair city by sneaking past. Whether set among the neon-lit, refuse-strewn streets of Hope or the neatly-manicured, wide boulevards of Glory, the common threads of the characters’ stories continue to interlace. All paths seem to lead, directly or less so, to the presence of the Tenth Circle Project and the underground, confidential work that’s taking place within the facility—which is conveniently located in Hope. For all the claims that The Project is aimed at geothermal energy and its resulting benefits, an increasing number of incidents suggest that all is not well beneath the surface and that cracks in the veil of secrecy are forming, even across the wide gulf in the shining city of Glory. Does the blood-red moon signal a coming apocalypse? Have the Project’s researchers delved too deeply and disturbed some menacing, supernatural force? I’m eagerly looking forward to the second instalment from this intriguing, alternate world to discover more of the Tenth Circle Project’s dark secrets. Page Page 38 38

Pumpkins usually elicit thoughts of pies, jack-o-lanterns and facial moisturizers. Facial masks and moisturizers have long taken advantage of the natural vitamins and moisturizing qualities of pumpkin pulp. Pumpkin seeds have a high vitamin A content, which is great for your skin, and contain zinc and vitamin C for your anti-oxidant quota. Pumpkin, thus, can heal your skin without the use of expensive designer creams and chemically enhanced masks. There are plenty of pumpkin masks for sale in stores, but making it yourself is so easy, why would you buy it? A simple can of plain (unspiced) pumpkin puree and other items from your kitchen will result in a face-saving moisturizer for dry and abused skin. Here’s how!

Things You’ll Need: 8 ounce canned plain pumpkin 10 almonds ¼ cup of honey 1/8 teaspoon of olive oil Food processor Container with tight seal lid

How to Make Pumpkin Moisturizer Toss almonds into a food processor and blend until they are of a fine texture. Or simply buy almonds already ground. Add the rest of the ingredients to the food processor and mix on low until blended. You can also simply stir it up with a spoon. Apply a thin layer of the mixture over your face and other dry areas such as elbows and knees. Sit back and enjoy the refreshing smell. Leave on for about 10 minutes. Rub in a bit to get the exfoliating effects before rinsing off. Towel dry. A mask will keep for about three weeks in the fridge. Always stir well before applying to a warm face.

Luscious Pumpkin Body Butter By Cait Johnson, author of Witch in the Kitchen (Inner Traditions, 2001). Ever get annoyed at the pumpkin puree left over from recipes that don’t use the whole can? Now there is something sublime you can do with it: whip up this luscious body butter, a beta-carotene feast to moisturize, nourish and smooth your skin. Pumpkin Body Butter is easy to make, smells absolutely heavenly and does simply divine things for your skin. Pumpkins—they’re not just for pie anymore! Pumpkin puree has enzymes and antioxidants that offer results similar to gentle alpha-hydroxy action. It removes dead dull cells while its beta-carotene-rich antioxidants nourish your skin. Coconut solids are a lovely natural moisturizer, and ground cinnamon is gently warming, stimulating and antibacterial. What you need: 1/2-cup pumpkin puree, preferably organic 1/2-cup solids from a can of coconut milk 1/2-teaspoon ground cinnamon Mix ingredients in a bowl. Apply generously to clean skin (standing or sitting on a towel, if you like), massaging gently to work well into the skin. Allow to remain on for 10 minutes or so, and then rinse with warm water and pat dry www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Chinese Medicine - an Ally in the Treatment of the

Common Cold As we all know cold and flu season is upon us. Fall and winter tend to keep many otherwise healthy people indoors and less active lending a helping hand to the spread of colds and flu’s. Many still believe that Chinese Medicine is used as a last resort for chronic illnesses and pain; however its methods are very effective for acute conditions such as common colds and flu’s!

Can a Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCMD) help further? The answer to this is most

definitely YES! A TCMD differentiates each patient’s condition and prepares an herbal formula according to the patient’s constitutional strengths and their complaints. The goal is to regain balance and support what the body is already doing. Preventative formulas may also be prescribed to build on patient’s weaknesses or lessen the total effects of a common cold. An acupuncture point prescription and/or cupping treatment may also be used as a means to a hurried recovery period. Book your appointment with Dr. Tonya Coutts as soon as you feel the beginnings of a cold and see the difference TCM makes!

“Classic.” One adjective of fashion that never goes out of style. When I think of class, I think of some of the world’s greatest beauty icons in history; Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Rita Hayworth. Among their fashionable and exquisite wardrobes, they also exuded a demure and sophisticated, yet sexy look. Their makeup artists were brilliant because they managed to create an effortless look of classic beauty by focusing on the eyes or lips only. They kept the rest of the face minimal, and matte. Red lips are hot on the runways right now for the season, but better yet, will always, and I mean always be in style! Thus; classic. This is my inspiration for this month’s column; perfecting a bold, red lip. If you can master this, you honestly don’t even need to wear other makeup. It can be done in a flash, and is so versatile! You can wear it with some nice jeans, scarf, and a tee, or add it to a glam outfit for a night out! There are a few different types of lip colours out there; lipsticks in matte, cream sheen, or gloss, and also lip stains. Go glossy if you want the boldest, most ‘look-at-me’ lips. Matte if you still want the classic, red look, but a bit more muted down, and stains if you want that slight, ‘just-bitten’ popsicle lip look. Trouble choosing a red that’s right for you? Go by your skin tone. Fair complexions should wear cooler reds with a hint of pink, olive or medium complexions should opt for reds with warmer undertones such as ones with a bit of coral, orange or rosy pink. Darker complexions can wear burgundies, and deeper more crimson reds. Still in doubt? Grab a tester, and try it on! Lip colour can be very deceiving to the naked eye. So you won’t truly know until you test it. The key to making a red lip look perfect is to lightly line the lip with a liner that exact matches the shade of lip colour you’re using. Apply it just along the edge of your natural lip line, using light, feathery strokes. Next, apply your lip colour using an actual lip brush. This ensures a smoother application, and better overall, even coverage. Take a tissue, blot your lips twice, and dust your lips lightly with a touch of translucent powder (this trick gives it that maximum staying power) *Note: As a faster alternative, you can just use a lip primer prior to applying your lipstick. (MAC makes a great one called Prep and Prime). Lastly, reapply your lip colour! If you really want to highlight your lip shape, and show off your pretty pucker, take a white pencil eyeliner, and lightly dot just above the “cupid’s bow” (the cleft of your upper lip line) and blend. This trick really accentuates the definition and shape to your upper lip. There you have it, that’s some easy, beauty 101!!! Page 40

PREPARE FOR FALL WITH 5 SKIN CARE TIPS 1. Stay Hydrated & Exfoliate to Help Remove Toxins - The body’s attempt to remove excess levels of unwanted chemicals through the skin can cause acne and will aggravate eczema, as well as create other skin reactions. It’s important to maintain your daily intake of water to aid in elimination of these toxins. 2. Protect Your Lips - Start moisturizing early to prevent cracked & chapped lips this winter. I suggest using a non-petroleum-based lip balm as it has been found that petroleum-based products can have a drying effect on your lips. 3. Don’t Forget Your Hands - It’s easy for hands to become dry and damaged due to the decrease in humidity in winter. The skin on the hands tends to be thinner than on the rest of your body and is often exposed to more drying agents. 4. Use Gentle Soaps that Don’t Strip Oils from Your Skin - Use cold processed soaps and if your skin is sensitive, use an unscented soap. Harsh soaps full of dyes and fragrance can often strip your skin’s essential oils, leaving your skin dry and cracked. 5. Continue Sun Protection - You still need to exercise caution when it comes to protecting your skin from UV rays. Winter doesn’t necessarily signal a break from sun exposure, especially for those who exercise or work outdoors. UV rays penetrate clouds and overcast skies, and reflect off water, cement, sand, and snow. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

It is known as touch, and the art of touch is selfmassage and massage. Studies show that without touch, we humans will become ill; babies will lose weight, have a hard time growing up healthy, and will have a hard time developing healthy relationships with themselves and others. It also helps strengthen the baby’s immune systems; in turn, making baby much happier and healthier. This touch can be from a loving parent, sibling or any other person who is looking after the baby. Self-massage or massage is not just a touch; it is a way of showing love, caring, healing, and appreciation for yourself and your baby. When massaging your baby on a regular basis, you create a healthy and happy bond between each other! Here are some quick tips: massage your baby when they are quiet or well-rested; after a nap is a really good time. Another good idea is to get everything ready before you decide to give your baby a massage, like: a cozy surface, warm blanket, massage oil, and a diaper. The next thing is to make sure the room is warm enough so that your baby is comfortable with minimum clothing on. It helps you to start asking permission from your baby if they are ready for a massage. This helps them to learn about healthy touch! Please pay attention to how your baby reacts to your touch, pressure and when your baby would like you to stop. The most important thing about massaging your baby is that you both have fun and enjoy each other’s company! This Halloween the most popular mask is the Arnold Schwarzenegger mask. And the best part? Who’s in charge? All the organs of the body were having a meeting, trying to decide who the one in charge was. “I should be in charge,” said the brain. “Because I run all the body’s systems, so without me, nothing would happen.” “I should be in charge,” said the blood. “Because I circulate oxygen all over so without me, you’d all waste away.” “I should be in charge,” said the stomach.” Because I process food and give all of you energy.” “I should be in charge,” said the legs. “Because I carry the body wherever it needs to go.” “I should be in charge,” said the eyes. “Because I allow the body to see where it goes.” “I should be in charge,” said the rectum. “Because I’m responsible for waste removal.” All the other body parts laughed at the rectum and insulted him. So, in a huff, he shut down tight. Within a few days, the brain had a terrible headache, the stomach was bloated, the legs got wobbly, the eyes got watery, and the blood was toxic. They all decided that the rectum should be the boss. The Moral of the story? Even though the others do all the work... The ________ is usually in charge!

THIS IS HAPPENING RIGHT HERE IN OUR OWN COUNTRY! We Must Stop This Immediately!!! Have you noticed that stairs are getting steeper, groceries are heavier, and everything is farther away? Yesterday I walked to the corner and I was dumbfounded to discover how long our street had become! You know, people are less considerate now, especially the young ones. They speak in whispers all the time! If you ask them to speak up they just keep repeating themselves, endlessly mouthing the same silent message until they’re red in the face! What do they think I am, a lip reader? I also think they are much younger than I was at the same age. On the other hand, people my own age are so much older than I am. I ran into an old friend the other day and she has aged so much that she didn’t even recognize me. I got to thinking about the poor dear while I was combing my hair this morning, and in doing so, I glanced at my own reflection, and even mirrors are not made the way they used to be! Another thing, everyone drives so fast these days! You’re risking life and limb if you happen to pull onto the motorway in front of them. All I can say is, their brakes must wear out awfully fast the way I see them screech and swerve in my rear view mirror. Clothing manufacturers are less civilized these days, too. Why else would they suddenly start labeling a size 10 or 12 dress as 18 or 20? Do they think no one notices? The people who make bathroom scales are pulling the same prank. Do they think I actually ‘believe’ the number I see on that dial? HA! I would never let myself weigh that much! Just who do these people think they’re fooling? I’d like to call up someone in authority to report what’s going on, but the telephone company is in on the conspiracy too: they’ve printed the phone books in such small type that no one could ever find a number in there! All I can do is pass along this warning: WE ARE UNDER ATTACK! Unless something drastic happens, pretty soon everyone will have to suffer these awful indignities. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Special Feature Special Feature HOME DESIGN A fresh new space that doesn’t break the bank.

With the changing of the seasons and Christmas rapidly approaching, updating your home seems to be on the mind. However, one thing tends to get in the way: budget. I’m going to share with you a few different solutions for updates you can do around your home to create a fresh new space that doesn’t break the bank. The number one solution to giving any room a new life is paint. Colour changes everything and is the most costeffective solution to changing any space. Whether it’s a new feature wall colour, a fresh coat of paint to your kitchen cabinets, or re-painting that old chest of drawers, colour is the number one element in decor and is the ultimate way to express your personal taste within your home. Do you have an old chair that you just can’t part with? Give it a new lease on life with a good tune up and re-upholstering with a contemporary fabric, and you have yourself a brand new accent piece of furniture that has personal meaning and will always be timeless! These pieces show your history and bring character to your space. Looking for these pieces to add to your home can be as easy as going to the take-it-or-leave-it or any vintage/second hand store; you just need to imagine the potential. Old bar stools and ottomans can be easily recovered and made to look ‘good as new’ and completely unique. Area rugs can centralize a space and create a whole different furniture planning arrangement. All front legs of your furniture should be on the edge of the area rug so that it doesn’t look like it is floating in the middle of the room. You can pick up remnants from large carpet stores and get them bound around the edges, or if you find one that isn’t quite big enough, buy 2 and you can bind them together. Art work is another way to bring colour and texture into any room. If painting a bold feature wall isn’t for you, then perhaps some DIY artwork is the better solution. Canvas comes in any size, and there is no right or wrong when it comes to art. If you like it, then hang it up; no one will have that same piece! You can even wrap canvas in fabric if painting is not for you. There are also great online stores that allow you to choose from a variety of prints and frames and can also transfer personal family pictures onto canvas. These would truly be some conversation pieces. These are just some of the cost effective ways for updating your home for the changing seasons ahead. Use your imagination! To achieve a designer look doesn’t mean draining the account. Look at what you already own in your home and give it a new life. BATHROOM LIGHTING TIPS Lighting in the bathroom is key, but does require some thought. What type of lighting will you use? Where will you place the light? What type of fixtures and finishes do you want? Understanding the basic concepts of bathroom lighting will make answering these questions much easier and result in a beautiful, well-lit space. Use these five lighting tips to minimize the amount of shadow and glare, while perfectly brightening up your bathroom! Above the mirror ~ If you have the space, using diffusers (open or closed) centered above the mirror will minimize shadows on your face. Also, translucent white diffusers work best to avoid any glare, so be careful with clear glass fixtures that expose the bulb - they tend to produce a glare. Beside the mirror ~ Putting lights beside the mirror, such as sconces, provide the best lighting while minimizing shadows. The sconces should be placed on both sides of the mirror, at face height. The fabulous thing about sconces is that they are fantastic for both task and accent lighting. Since they are placed at face level, they are perfect for grooming or applying makeup; and with the multitude of sconces available you won’t have to sacrifice style for function! On the mirror ~ If placing a light directly on the mirror, be sure it is as nicely finished in the back as it is in the front. The mirror will be reflecting the back portion (usually unseen) of the light so it has to look good! This option is also nice if you want a clean and sleek look in your bathroom, like the one shown here. The fixture is simple and slender, and blends easily with the other finishes in the bathroom. Recessed ~ This lighting option is great for a clean, unobtrusive look. The recessed lights become part of the architecture and simply blend into the room. When using recessed lighting, it’s best to place them closer to the mirror to get the most light coverage where you need it and avoid as much shadow as possible. Also, putting two or more recessed lights, spaced out in a row, play off each other, creating a lighter, brighter space. Decorative ~ Decorative lights enhance light coverage, working with other task lights, while adding to the décor and mood of the bathroom. A gorgeous chandelier over a freestanding tub, for example, is an instant hit of glam and elegance. To ensure a cohesive look throughout the space, coordinate the materials and finishes of your decorative lighting with the hardware in the room, such as faucets and handles. If using coloured glass, try to keep it away from the mirror as you can discolour the light where you need it most. Page 44

PAINTING TIPS

On your next inside painting project, follow these simple rules and I guarantee that you will save at least 2 hours. 1. Slosh Your Brush ~ Before painting, slosh your brush in whatever solvent you will be using at the end of the day to clean the brush (i.e., water for latex, mineral spirits for oil, etc.). It’ll be easier to clean when you’re done. 2. Wrap Brush or Roller ~ If you don’t feel like cleaning your brush or roller at the end of the day and expect to get back to painting within a few days, wrap the brush or roller tightly in a plastic bag and put in the freezer. 3. Latex Gloves or Lotion, Your Pick ~ Latex gloves are great for keeping your hands clean (especially if you’re using oil-based paint!). If you can’t stand latex gloves or are allergic, a thick application of hand lotion before painting will make cleaning a lot easier later on. 4. Wet Edge ~ Always keep a wet edge as you paint, and work away from that wet edge. If you paint over a dry edge, you will get overlap marks. 5. Avoid Cheap Roller Covers and Brushes ~ This one is important. Cheap roller covers leave fuzz on the wall. Cheap brushes leave streaky brush marks. Avoid those multi-packs of rollers, like ten for a dollar. Pay the extra few cents and get better tools. It’ll be worth it. Honest, it will! 6. Test for Loose Paint ~ Will the existing painted surface take new paint? And hold it for years to come? Test this out by adhering a strip of duct tape to the existing painted surface and… rip it off. If flakes of paint more than microscopic size come off, you may need to scrape and sand. 7. Low-Stick Masking Tape ~ Also known as “blue tape,” this tape comes off easier and doesn’t peel off primer or existing paint. Blue tape, by itself, will save you at least an hour of frustration over the old-style beige masking tape. 8. Rein in Your Paint Can Opener ~ Paint can openers, those little metal keys (you do use one, don’t you?) are notorious for getting lost in the shuffle. Chain it to a small chunk of wood just like a public bathroom key. Whatever you do, just don’t lose it! 9. Painting Process ~ Paint in this order: Ceiling, Walls, Trim, Cabinets, and lastly, Doors.

INTERIOR DESIGN TIPS • Don’t be afraid of colour. Paint does an amaing job at making the room. • Display what you love; you can never go wrong. • Place fresh fruit or vegetables in a bowl. You can make it classic, like citrus in a bowl. The bowl can complement any décor, and it’s a great way to inject colour in a room. • A fake fur throw somewhere in the living room, available to curl up with. I usually have one on the side of the easy chair. • Lots of natural light and an abundance of earthy design materials. • Make the most of what you have. Instead of faking a large, open space, opt to make a small space as cosy and inviting as possible. Whether it’s warm colours, soft lighting, or a reading corner, the key is to make your space a place you can’t wait to come home to. • Use the rule of threes - when adding colour to a room, it should be repeated at least three times to create unity in the design. That can be original artwork plus throw pillows plus a vase on the mantel, for example. Page 46

$429,000

You must view this home to truly appreciate the value. Over 2800 sq. ft. of development - 6 bedrooms and a den in Lakeside Greens in Chestermere for only $429,000. This home was made for a large family and backs onto a park. The entire main floor is on-site maple hardwood and cork flooring. The massive kitchen has lots of oak cabinets, brand new counter tops, a raised eating bar, and a gas range. The beautifully landscaped yard is fenced and has a dog run at one side. There is a custom two-tiered oversized deck, all maintenance free - perfect for entertaining. The home is newly painted in neutral taupe, and the lower level has brand new carpet. There are three bedrooms on the main, and three bedrooms and a den in the lower level (which also has a huge rec room, storage room, and laundry). New tile backsplash in all the bathrooms. This house is like a show home - a gift at $429,000. Pictures do not do it justice. Please have a look - you will be pleasantly surprised.

INTERIOR DESIGN TIPS • Use mirrors to make rooms look larger and brighter. • Declutter. Don’t let stuff build up around the house. Put it away! Make sure to have a lot of storage space in your house. When you run out of storage space, then it would be time to go through everything and either throw unnecessary items out or donate them to a charitable organization. • Move the furniture around. The change can make such a difference in a room and yet cost you nothing! • Cleverly mixing old with new. Balance modern kitchen appliances with antique stools or dining table. • Candles. They make a room warm and inviting. • Use vinyl wall decals. They come in all different shapes, sizes, sayings and pictures. They are easily applied to the wall and don’t damage when you are ready for a change (check out the Unique Boutique for some ideas!) • Use an item in a way other than for its original purpose. It not only extends the life of an object but also adds a dash of the unexpected to any design or decor. Old window frames can be transformed into mirrors and picture frames, old-fashioned canning jars store cotton balls & Q-tips, and a handmade Naomi Hickey Specialist wooden tool box is now home to salt and pepper shakers at Mortgage Mortgage Specialist our dining room table! Really, the possibilities are endless and Strathmore Strathmore/Drumheller and Surrounding Area and often unexpected! Surrounding Areas • Go to the thrift store, buy old teapots and fill them with wild- tel 403-934-6383 New Builds/Refinances flowers. Everyone will say, “Wow, that’s beautiful!” cell 403-818-1387 Welcome to Canada • Switch up the cushions. For summer I like to use crisp linens with Self fax Employed 403-934-6393 button details and for winter, rich silks and damasks in earthy naomi.hickey@scotiabank.com or jewel tones. Inexpensive way to spruce up your living room Ph: 403-818-1387 naomi.hickey@scotiabank.com or family room. • Frame gorgeous papers and fabrics. The colour/pattern possibilities are endless! If You Can... If you can... Start the day without caffeine. If you can... Get going without pep pills. If you can... Always be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains. If you can... Resist complaining and boring people with your troubles. If you can... Eat the same food every day and be grateful for it. If you can... Understand when your loved ones are too busy to give you any time. If you can... Forgive a friend’s lack of consideration. If you can... Overlook it when those you love take it out on you when, through no fault of your own, something goes wrong. If you can... Take criticism and blame without resentment. If you can... Ignore a friend’s limited education and never correct him. If you can... Face the world without lies and deceit. If you can... Conquer tension without medical help. If you can... Relax without liquor. If you can... Sleep without the aid of drugs. If you can... Honestly say that deep in your heart you have no prejudice against creed or color, religion or politics. If you can... Then, my friend, you are almost as good as your dog. Page 50

Untranslatable Words from Around the World There are at least 250,000 words in the English language. However, to think that English – or any language – could hold enough expression to convey the entirety of the human experience is as arrogant of an assumption as it is naive. Here are a few examples of instances where other languages have found the right word and English simply falls speechless. 1. Mamihlapinatapei: Yagan – “The wordless, yet meaningful look shared by two people who both desire to initiate something but are both reluctant to start” 2. Jayus: Indonesian – “A joke so poorly told and so unfunny that one cannot help but laugh” 3. Iktsuarpok: Inuit – “To go outside to check if anyone is coming.” 4. Kyoikumama: Japanese – “A mother who relentlessly pushes her children toward academic achievement” 5. Tartle: Scottish – The act of hesitating while introducing someone because you’ve forgotten their name. 6. Prozvonit: Czech – This word means to call a mobile phone and let it ring once so that the other person will call back, saving the first caller money. 7. Cafuné: Brazilian Portuguese – “The act of tenderly running one’s fingers through someone’s hair.” www.thenewsyneighbour.com
