I Believe... That just because two people argue, it doesn’t mean they don’t love each other. And just because they don’t argue, it doesn’t mean they do love each other. I Believe... That we don’t have to change friends if we understand that friends change. I Believe... That no matter how good a friend is, they’re going to hurt you every once in a while and you must forgive them for that. I Believe... That true friendship continues to grow, even over the longest distance; same goes for true love. I Believe.... That you can keep going long after you think you can’t.

WOMEN SHOULD PAINT! Seven reasons why every woman should express herself through art.

Even if you haven’t painted since grade school, your artistic expression longs to be released. Why Women Should Paint: Reason 1 - Women are aesthetic by nature. A woman will notice the subtle colours of an Anjou pear, and use it as inspiration to redecorate a room. She will buy a bolt of fabric just because the colour moves her, and worry about how to use it later. A woman will tear a picture of a garden from a magazine, just to post it on her refrigerator. Why Women Should Paint: Reason 2 - Women instinctively recognize and capture beauty, and when given the chance, will express her own intuitive energy. Women recognize and embrace the emotion that beauty ignites, and are drawn to colours based on their emotional needs. It’s why they buy yellow flowers to cheer themselves up, or add a bright scarf to an outfit. Why Women Should Paint: Reason 3 - Women can communicate and express themselves without words. A mother expresses love with a bedtime lullaby, a grandmother expresses her confidence by wearing a feathered purple hat, and a toddler expresses her fearlessness by colouring on the living-room wall. Even though no words are spoken, her message is clear. Why Women Should Paint: Reason 4 - Women naturally have a great sense of colour and light, which is why they get to choose the new house colour. Not only that, they are fearless about personal expression. Just give them some time, mental space and tools to create, and then stand back. Women are more willing to break the rules set by the standard of the day. They have a natural instinct for doing things differently, which is why they can make a Halloween costume out of a pillow case or turn a farmhouse door into a coffee table. Why Women Should Paint: Reason 5 - Women understand the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi, the ability to see beauty in things that are imperfect. They stop to admire an intricate rusty gate, the complexity of a darkened pre-storm sky or old chair with paint chipped away, exposing its history of previous colours. Beauty is everywhere, and women notice it. Why Women Should Paint: Reason 6 - As we get older, women become less afraid to act on impulse. A 65-year-old woman explains: “At my age, I can be as crazy as I want to be”. Amazingly, we are born with that freedom and openly express it in early childhood. Eventually things like peer pressure and the “status quo” stifle it in adolescence. If only we could maintain that freedom throughout our adulthood, just imagine our potential over a lifetime. Women should not have to wait until their sixties to rediscover themselves. It’s time to let their creativity run free. Why Women Should Paint: Reason 7 - In the end, women use creative expression to make the world more beautiful. Even simple things like a bowl of green apples on a table or flower pot with sprouting daffodils emotes beauty, which in turn makes the world a happier place. That’s perhaps the best reason for women to paint. What Stops Women from Painting? So with all this natural instinct, what keeps women from painting? Typically, it’s intimidation, fear of failure, and the lack of trust in her own aesthetic. There are so many rigid art styles out there, like figure drawing or portrait painting, which can be very difficult and limiting. Thankfully, there is decorative painting, which allows EVERY woman to explore her artistic expression, regardless of how much or how little talent she possesses. I invite you to release and embrace your artistic expression today. To explore your options call Correne at CANVAS YOUR DREAMS With Correne. 403-619-7562.

FROM THE PUBLISHERS It’s incredible to think we are already into the 10th month of the year; I don’t even want to think about 2011 being so close. We drove up to Edmonton over the weekend and saw the hard working farmers working in the fields starting to bring in their fall crops – food for the world. I think here in Alberta we are so accustomed to seeing the big machines in the fields this time of year, we forget how important the farmers really are to all of us. They are the salt of the earth and without farmers we would be a very sad bunch – we should all give a great big Thank-You to all these hard working agriculturists and pray they have the most perfect weather to take off all their precious crops. And, what is with these days and days of rain, with the terrible summer we had I was hoping to have a warm and wonderful Indian Summer – I guess that’s not going to happen. But, the trees sure are pretty - changing to their brilliant colors and it really makes you think about Thanksgiving and for all the beauty around us and that Big Golden Turkey. Our special Book Reviewer – Derek Donais’s book “MetalMagic: Talisman” is now available on Amazon.com – congratulations Derek. It makes me feel proud we have so many talented writers in Alberta and that Derek is part of The Newsy Neighbour team. More exciting news is that the Calgary Newsy Neighbour will hit the stands November 15th and not only will Derek be apart of the magazine but Jock Wilson of QR77 will also be submitting a monthly column and we will have other special celebrity contributors monthly. We thank all our faithful readers and advertisers; you truly are the reason for our success and making the New Calgary Newsy Neighbour possible. Happy Thanksgiving – we are truly thankful. We also deliver extra copies to handpicked locations and high-volume stands in these areas. I will have been in business for a year in about Aug. Half of my leads have come from Newsy and half from referral. This summer I am going to cancel all phone book ads and likely the one other ad that I run consistently, and only run in Newsy. I made enough money to pay off my equipment and now the company makes enough to pay for its own advertising. I'll start taking a wage this year. I have to admit that I am a little surprised myself at how successful advertising in Newsy has been. ~ Tannis, Exclusively Mobile The Newsy Neighbor is published 12 times a year, printed by Central Web and distributed by Canada Post, Trader Publications and Gallant Distribution. The opinions expressed in the advertisements of this publication are those of the advertisers and not of The Newsy Neighbor directly. BODY PARTS – THE HUMAN EAR

The forgotten ears - oh my! We carry them around on the sides of our heads all our lives, but rarely think about them until the dreaded day one is plugged – talk about an inconvenience – and it hurts. That’s what you get for not thinking about your ears. The doctor can fix it with his handy dandy ear un-plunger and I’m not going to say it does not hurt a little, but a little pain for a lot of gain is definately worth it. “The most basic of all human needs is the need to understand and be understood. The best way to understand people is to listen to them.” -- Ralph Nichols Sound is a form of energy that moves through the air, water, and other matter, in waves of pressure. Although the ear is the vertebrate sense organ that recognizes sound, it is the brain and central nervous system that “hears”. Your ear is an auditory gate providing an incredible amount of long-term memories. Through the ear the sound of music is captured and then recalled throughout your life. It takes in the sounds of nature as well as the sounds of threat and your body will respond accordingly to the audible information provided. It allows your body to remain stable and the body’s equilibrium is established by the amount of pressure in the inner ear. I know ears come in all sorts of sizes and shapes but all are kinda the same and it is uniquely shaped to capture sound and channel it from the outer ear through the ear canal. The middle ear converts the sound when it strikes the eardrum and conveys the sound to the inner ear and sends the information on the brain instantaneously. The human ear is the most complex sensory system in the human body. Vision and smell are extraordinary senses, but they do not match in complexity to the ear’s process of turning minute waves of sound pressure from air molecules banging against the eardrum into the neural signals sent to the brain and interpreted as sound. There are three bones in the human ear commonly known as the Hammer, Anvil, and Stirrup. The more “medical” terms are the Incus, Malleus, and Stapes, with the Stapes being the smallest bone in the human Page 14

There are three parts to your beautiful ear being the Outer – Middle and Inner Ear all performing very important functions to hearing. Outer, the only visible portion of the ear – the pretty part that directs sound through the ear canal. The Middle ear is an air-filled cavity behind the eardrum and where you will find the three ear bones they work together to perform the movement of fluid within the Inner ear where the magic of hearing all comes together. Together with the cochlea, vestibular apparatus, three semi-circular canals and the vestibule and a very incredible process of fluids, pressure and ducts the sound is sent through the auditory portion of the eighth cranial nerve to the brain. I feel lightheaded just thinking about it. We truly are miraculous creatures – and that is just our little old forgotten ear. Incredible doesn’t seem like enough to say. By: Kathryn Hartwell Did you know that Sound travels in waves? These waves are vibrations in the air and the number of vibrations per second is called a frequency. Humans can hear the range of 20 to 20 thousand Hertz (vibrations per second). Did you know that Astronomers have detected the deepest note ever generated in the cosmos, a B-flat flying through space like a ripple on an invisible pond. No human will actually hear the note, because it is 57 octaves below the keys in the middle of the piano. The blue whale can produce the loudest sound of any animal. At 188 decibels, the noise can be detected over 800 kilometres away. www.thenewsyneighbor.com

SEPTEMBER FAMILY PAGE

Thanksgiving & Halloween

October is really a great Family Month with Thanksgiving October 11th and Halloween October 31st – two really special days to spend with family and friends. Everyone loves Thanksgiving, who cannot resist the aroma of a crispy, yummy golden brown turkey – the melt in your mouth flavour of cream cheese mashed potatoes, baked yams, aromatic stuffing, crispy onion green beans and pumpkin pie. Everyone has a favourite recipe for Thanksgiving, but the one thing that will never change in our house is the Turkey. Did you know that wild turkeys still live in the woods in parts of North America and are the largest game birds found in this part of the world? When was the last time you saw a Wild Turkey? The domestic Turkey is a descendant of the wild Turkey and was first domesticated by the Aztec. With all the autumn leaves fluttering to the ground, now is the time to make a great Thanksgiving

Turkey Leaf arrangement for your table. This is a very pretty and colourful addition to your Thanksgiving decorations and a craft the whole family can help with. Send the children outside to gather leaves - there are all sorts of appealing shades and sizes to choose from, you will also need a small pinecone. Grab a piece of construction paper, red, and orange or yellow are great colours some glue and scissors. Place and glue your leaves on the construction paper in a fan like shape, place the pinecone at the bottom for the body – make eyes and beak out of felt for the face and there you have it, your own Gobble – Gobble – Turkey.

Did you know a Turkeys gobble could be heard for up to a kilometre and half? And, a male Turkey is called Tom. Kids love crafts and when it is something sitting in the middle of your Thanksgiving table, that makes it even better. I absolutely love candles and you will find them in every corner of my house – this is a craft in which you can change for every occasion – for Thanksgiving you can use Cranberries, Leaves, Nuts, pinecones anything outdoorsy and colourful. You will need: · A plastic container such as a small yogurt, cottage cheese or margarine type container · A tapered candle & · Elmer’s glue. O.K. the hard part (ha-ha) mix or place all your trinkets in the container, add as much glue as required, leave for a couple of minutes – press in the tapered candle and let dry over night. Pop it out when you’re sure it is dry. Doesn’t this just bring all sorts of different candle ideas flying into your imagination? I’m thinking about glue that would dry perfectly clear. Beads, candy, rocks or flowers just use your imagination – wedding centrepieces, birthdays, any celebration – this could really be a creative process. I love really good ideas to get those creative juices flowing. Did you know - Alexander Parkes created the first man-made plastic in 1862? By Kathryn Hartwell

Alrighty then, now back to the Turkey. I have never been adventurous enough to try

grilling or deep-frying my Turkey – but maybe this year will be different. Roasting the Turkey is for sure the easiest method: stuff, season, cover with foil, cook at the same temperature, uncover, brown and presto! Beautiful! Now, grilling or deep-frying is a little different and what about all those people who set things on fire trying to deep-fry their Turkeys?! Not only that, but there is something I’m truly interested in trying - and that is Brining. Why have I never heard of this before – do I live in the dark ages?

What you do is submerge your whole turkey in a brine solution for 12 to 18 hours in a container in your refrigerator – there are all sorts of different brine recipes and it sounds like the toughest part would be finding a container that will hold your turkey and still fit into your refrigerator. They say your brined Turkey will be the juiciest, the most tender, moist bird you have ever eaten. Sound like it’s definitely worth a try. I have included a couple Brine recipes that sound really, really good and now I can hardly, hardly wait for Thanksgiving.

OLD FASHIONED TURKEY BRINE · 2 Cups Kosher Salt – not table salt – the stuff you use for pickling · 3 Tbsp. Poultry Seasoning · 3 Tbsp. Onion Powder · 1 Tbsp. Black Pepper · 4 Quarts Vegetable Broth · 2 Quarts Water · 3 Cups Cranberry Juice Put everything in a big pot – boil for 20 minutes and cool. Put Turkey into cooled brine and store in your refrigerator for 12 – 16 hours. Take out rinse with cool water, pat dry and prepare as usual. Very Important – do not use salt in your stuffing, seasoning or gravy – the Turkey already has enough from the brine. Now here is a recipe in which you can use your cooler instead of your refrigerator – which is very helpful because at Thanksgiving in my house the refrigerator is full of so many other goodies.

APPLE-ISHOUS TURKEY BRINE · 2 Quarts Apple Juice · 1 gallon cold water · 1 Cup Kosher salt · 6 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed · 5 pounds ice Line a cooler with a large food safe bag. Combine all the ingredients and stir until the salt is dissolved and add the garlic. Put in the Turkey breast-side down and add enough water to submerge. Pour 5 pounds ice over Turkey. Seal the bag and close the cooler. Marinate for 12 to 16 hours. Take out rinse with cool water, pat dry and prepare as usual. Brine Turkeys cook 20-30 minutes faster and make sure you take out the giblets from inside the Turkey before you Brine. Have the most terrific, pleasurable and relishing Thanksgiving Dinner ever. • Eliminates static cling from pantyhose. Rub a damp, used sheet of Bounce over the hose. • Prevents musty suitcases. Place an individual sheet of Bounce inside empty luggage before storing. • Freshens the air in your car. Place a sheet of Bounce under the front seat • Cleans baked-on food from a cooking pan. Put a sheet in the pan, fill with water, let sit overnight and sponge clean. The anti-static agents apparently weaken the bond between the food and the pan while the fabric softening agents soften the baked-on food. • Place a sheet of Bounce at the bottom of the wastebasket. Collects cat hair. Rubbing the area with a sheet of Bounce will magnetically attract all the loose hairs. • Wipe the blinds with a sheet of Bounce to prevent dust from resettling. • Wipes up sawdust from drilling or sandpapering. A used sheet of Bounce will collect sawdust like a tack cloth. • Eliminates odors in dirty laundry. Place an individual sheet of Bounce at the bottom of a laundry bag or hamper • Deodorizes shoes or sneakers. Place a sheet of Bounce in your shoes or sneakers overnight so they’ll smell great in the morning. www.thenewsyneighbor.com

A NOTE TO DAD A father, passing by his sons bedroom, was astonished to see that his bed was nicely made and everything was picked up. Then he saw an envelope, propped up prominently on the pillow that was addressed to ‘Dad.’ With the worst premonition, he opened the envelope. With trembling hands, he read the letter.

• • Ten week pre school programs

Dear Dad: It is with great regret and sorrow that I’m writing you. I had to elope with my new girlfriend because I wanted to avoid a scene with Mom and you. I have been finding real passion with Stacy and she is so nice. But I knew you would not approve of her because of all her piercings, tattoos, tight motorcycle clothes and the fact that she is much older than I am. But it’ s not only the passion... Dad, she’s pregnant. Stacy said that we will be very happy. She owns a trailer in the woods and has a stack of firewood for the whole winter. We share a dream of having many more children. Stacy has opened my eyes to the fact that marijuana doesn’t really hurt anyone. We’ll be growing it for ourselves and trading it with the other people that live nearby for cocaine and ecstasy. In the meantime, we will pray that science will find a cure for AIDS so that Stacy can get better. She deserves it. Don’t worry Dad. I’m 15 and I know how to take care of myself. Someday I’m sure that we will be back to visit so that you can get to know your grandchildren. Your Son, John P.S. Dad, none of the above is true. I’m over at Tommy’s house. I Just wanted to remind you that there are worse things in life than the report card that’s in my center desk drawer. I love you. Call me when it’s safe to come home

Two hillbillies walk into a restaurant. While having a bite to eat, they talk about their moonshine operation. Suddenly, a woman at a nearby table, who is eating a sandwich, begins to cough. After a minute or so, it becomes apparent that she is in real distress. One of the hillbillies looks at her and says, ‘Kin ya swallar?’ The woman shakes her head no. Then he asks, ‘Kin ya breathe?’ The woman begins to turn blue and shakes her head no. The hillbilly walks over to the woman, lifts up her dress, yanks down her drawers and quickly gives her right butt cheek a lick with his tongue. The woman is so shocked that she has a violent spasm and the obstruction flies out of her mouth. As she begins to breathe again, the Hillbilly walks slowly back to his table. His partner says, ‘Ya know, I’d heerd of that there ‘Hind Lick Maneuver’ but I ain’t niver seed nobody do it!’

The key to any successful small business is advertising. You need to make your potential clients aware of your business and products. This is the KEY! 1- Advertise to Reach New Customers. Your market changes constantly. New families in the area mean new customers to reach. People earn more money, which means changes in lifestyles and buying habits. The shopper who wouldn’t consider your business a few years ago may be a prime customer now. Remember 20% of families will move this year, 5 million people will be married and 4 million babies will be born*. 2- Advertise Continuously. Shoppers don’t have the store loyalty they once did. You must advertise to keep pace with your competition. The National Retail Merchants Association states: “Mobility and non-loyalty are rampant. Stores must promote to get former customers to return and to seek new ones. 3- Advertise to Remain With Shoppers Through the Buying Process. Many people postpone buying decisions. They often go from store to store comparing prices, quality and service. Advertising must reach them steadily through the entire decision-making process. Your name must be fresh in their minds when they ultimately decide to buy. 4- Advertise Because Your Competition is Advertising. There are only so many consumers in the market who are ready to buy at any one time. You’ll need to advertise to keep regular customers and to counterbalance the advertising of your competition. You must advertise to keep your share of customers or you will lose them to the more aggressive competitors. 5- Advertise Because it Pays Off Over a Long Period. Advertising gives you a long-term advantage over competitors who cut back or cancel advertising. A five year survey of more than 3,000 companies found Advertisers who maintain or expand advertising over a five year period see their sales increase an average of 100%. Companies, which cut advertising, averaged sales decreases of 45%. 6- Advertise to Generate Store Traffic. Continuous store traffic is the first step toward sales increases and expanding your base of shoppers. The more people who come into the store, the more possibilities you have to make sales and sell additional merchandise. For every 100 items that shoppers plan to buy, they make 30 unanticipated “in the store” purchases, an NRMA survey shows. 7- Advertise to Make More Sales. Advertising works! Businesses that succeed are usually strong, steady advertisers. Look around. You’ll find the most aggressive and consistent advertisers are almost invariably the most successful. 8- Advertise Because There is Always Business to Generate. Your doors are open. Salespeople are on the payroll. Even the slowest days produce sales. As long as you’re in business, you’ve got overhead to meet and new people to reach. Advertising can generate customers now .and in the future. 9- Advertise to Keep a Healthy Positive Image. In a competitive market, rumours and bad news travel fast. Advertising corrects misleading gossip, punctures “overstated” bad news. Advertising that is vigorous and positive can bring shoppers into the marketplace, regardless of the economy. 10- Advertise to Maintain Employee Morale. When advertising and promotion are suddenly cut or cancelled, salespeople may become alarmed and demoralized. They may start false rumours in an honest belief that your business is in trouble. Positive advertising boosts morale. It gives your staff strong additional support. www.thenewsyneighbor.com

HAIRY SPIDER’S HALLOWEEN What is this strange celebration called Halloween? It’s the funniest event I think I’ve ever seen. Children dress up in costumes really silly and weird and funny, Like ghosts, goblins and spiders, I even saw a scary mummy. They run around the streets after dark, And try to frighten each other and make all the dogs bark. They bang on their neighbours doors and yell out, “Trick or Treat. Then people give then candy and all things yummy and sweet. They wear their costumes to day care. They’re even allowed to wear them in school! They parade around the halls and gym, And break all sorts of school rules! I just had a terrific idea. I know what I’m going to do. I’ll dress up in a special costume that looks just like you! BY PATRICIA MULLIN www.thenewsyneighbor.com

Crate Training is it Cruel?

Many people feel that it is cruel to crate their dog, and especially a puppy, for any amount of time. Yet most dog trainers will agree that it is no crueller to than it is to leave a baby in a playpen or crib. Both allow the peace of mind knowing that they are safe when you are unable to supervise them. This is two-fold for puppies. Not only can you be guaranteed that they are safe when you are not home but so is your furniture, shoes, electrical cords... well you get the picture. Could there be any other reason to crate train if your dog is past the puppy stage? Let’s see the following... When traveling in a vehicle, crates do for your animals like what seat belts do for us. Not only do crates help keep them safe but they also help with the safety of the driver and other passengers. A roaming dog, or cat, can be of great distraction to a driver and if an accident does occur can be a dangerous projectile object. Many animals that have been involved in accidents that have not been confined have ended up being lost since they are typically dazed, scared and confused so when emergency response teams get to the scene their first inclination is to run. Even though we at times don’t plan for it the inevi-

A Dog’s Purpose Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a tenyear-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog’s owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle. I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn’t do anything for him, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home. As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience. The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker ‘s family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to accept Belker’s transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker’s death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, ‘’I know why.’’ Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I’d never heard a more comforting explanation. It has changed the way I try to live. He said, ‘’People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life - like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?’’ The six-year-old continued, ‘’Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don’t have to stay as long.’’

Live simply - Love generouslyCare deeply - Speak kindly. Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like: When loved ones come home, always run to greet them. Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride. Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy. Take naps. Stretch before rising. Run, romp, and play daily. Thrive on attention and let people touch you. Avoid biting when a simple growl will do. On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass. On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree. When you’re happy, dance around and wag your entire body. Delight in the simple joy of a long walk. Be loyal. Never pretend to be something you’re not. If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it. When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently. NINE WORDS WOMEN USE (1) Fine: This is the word women use to end an argument when they are right and you need to shut up. (2) Five Minutes: If she is getting dressed, this means a half hour. “Five minutes” is only five minutes if you have just been given five more minutes to watch the game before helping around the house. (3) Nothing: This is the calm before the storm. This means something, and you should be on your toes. Arguments that begin with “nothing” usually end in “fine.” (4) Go Ahead: This is a dare, not permission. Don’t Do It! (5) Loud Sigh: This is actually a word, but is a non-verbal statement often misunderstood by men. A loud sigh means she thinks you are an idiot and wonders why she is wasting her time standing here and arguing with you about nothing. (Refer back to # 3 for the meaning of “nothing.”) (6) That’s Okay: This is one of the most dangerous statements a woman can make to a man. “That’s okay” means she wants to think long and hard before deciding how and when you will pay for your mistake. (7) Thanks: A woman is thanking you, do not question, or faint. Just say, “You’re welcome. “ (This is true, unless she says “Thanks a lot” - which is PURE sarcasm and she is not thanking you at all. DO NOT, under ANY circumstances, say “You’re welcome” -- that will bring on “Whatever.”) (8) Whatever: Is a woman’s way of saying, “Up yours!” (9) Don’t worry about it, I’ve got it: Another dangerous statement, meaning this is something that a woman has told a man to do several times, but is now doing it herself. This will later result in a man asking, ‘What’s wrong?’ For the woman’s response, refer to # 3. www.thenewsyneighbor.com

I Am A Sweet Potato Hello I am a Sweet Potato and my name is Sylvia, I come from Central America - I am one of the oldest vegetables known to man. I am really, really old – I have been around since prehistoric times. Though, I don’t feel that old – they say you are as old as you feel. Even though I grew up in Central America my cousins live all over the world because our old friend Christopher Columbus took us to Europe after his first voyage to the New World in 1492. Then we went to the Philippines with our Spanish friends and then Africa, India, Indonesia, Asia and the United States. We are real world travelers. In the mid-20th century, the orange-fleshed sweet potato was introduced to the United States and given the name “Yam” to distinguish it from other sweet potatoes. So I guess, Yams are sweet potatoes but not all Sweet Potatoes are Yams – if that makes any sense at all. There is a Yam - Sweet Potato debate going on at this exact moment. We are so controversial, Yams – they say have been cultivated since 50,000 BC in Africa and Asia. Yams are one of the most popular and widely consumed foods in the world and are a staple food for many different countries including South America, Africa, the Pacific Islands, and the West Indies. Whatever the case may be Sweet Potato or Yam – we are really, really good for you and I will tell you why. We are an excellent source of Vitamin A (in the form of beta-carotene) and Vitamin C; we have healing properties as an antioxidant food. We help to eliminate free radicals in your precious body. We are also a very good source of Vitamin B6; your body needs B6 to breakdown a substance called homocysteine, which can directly damage blood vessel walls. If you have too much of this in your precious body you increase your risk of heart attack and stroke. And, another thing we are a good source of potassium, a mineral that helps to control blood pressure. Did you know just one cup of baked cubed yam contains 15.5% of the Daily Value for B6. Just one more thing and I will stop my bragging – We are a good source of manganese, a trace mineral that helps with carbohydrate metabolism and is a cofactor in a number of enzymes important in energy production and antioxidant defenses. So weather your like white, yellow, orange, red or purple Sweet Potatoes or Yams we are all good for you. To help you out in trying to decide how to eat us I have included some really good and delicious recipes for you to enjoy – so enjoy and have the most wonderful day today. Selection - Choose firm, dark, smooth sweet potatoes without wrinkles, bruises, sprouts, or decay. Even if cut away, a decayed spot may have already caused the whole potato to take on an unpleasant flavor. Storage - Sweet potatoes spoil rapidly. To keep them fresh, store them in a dry, cool (55-60°) place such a cellar, pantry, or garage. Do not store them in the refrigerator, where they will develop a hard core and an "off" taste. If stored properly, sweet potatoes will keep for a month or longer. At normal room temperature, they should be used within a week of purchase. By Kathryn Hartwell

BAKED SWEET POTATO FRIES

2 sweet potatoes, peeled & shredded 2 Tsp. Ground Cloves 2 eggs, beaten 2 Tsp. Ground Cinnamon 1 Tbsp. brown sugar ¼-cup vegetable oil for frying 2 Tbsp. all–purpose flour Place the potatoes in a cheese cloth and squeeze out as much moisture as possible – let the potatoes sit and then squeeze again, then combine all the ingredients, mix well and form into patties – not to big. Cook in a hot frying pan until brown – Drain on paper towels and serve piping hot! That’s what I’m talking about!

One large sweet potato Sea salt (coarse) Freshly ground black pepper Olive oil Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Peel the potato and cut into fries. Sprinkle potatoes generously with salt and pepper and drizzle with olive oil. Mix and place on cookie sheet so the potatoes are not touching. Bake for 15 minutes, turn, and return to oven for another 10 minutes. Cut them pretty small, if they are to thick they may be mushy and if you like them really crunchy like I do – blanch them first for about 10 min. Another really good tip is once they are cooked through from the oven – take-out and sprinkle a bit of brown sugar, toss and return to the oven for a couple of minutes to form a nice crispy crunch. For different flavours use – Cajun spice, smoked paprika, garlic powder, chilli powder – whatever your little heart desires – use your imagination. Here are two dipping sauces for your Sweet Potato Fries – One Sweet and the other spicy depending on your mood. Sweet Dipping Sauce Whisk together ½-cup plain yogurt, ¼-cup maple syrup, and cinnamon to taste. Spicy Dipping Sauce Whisk together ½-cup mayonnaise and ¼-cup chipotle salsa or any salsa – you could also use chutney, which comes in all sorts of different flavours. Use your imagination. REVIEW by:

Derek Donais www.derekdonais.com dragonwind2000@hotmail.com

Four Women, Four Shooters, Four Destinies to Save the World…

Women of the Apocalypse is a great example of the welcome, though long overdue, trend in fantasy writing towards women as central characters—as heroes. The story involves four different women, each of whom have unwittingly become a warrior to champion the cause of humanity against one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse: war, famine, pestilence or death. The entire scenario is an accidental one, as the characters are recruited, unbeknownst to them, by drinking shooters imbued with the power to enable their transformations. As a side note, the preface contains a recipe for The Four Horsemen Shooter. If the weather in south-central Alberta keeps up, I may just have to sample one in order to keep warm while writing at my computer. The champions, in turn, are accompanied by one of four archangels—Michael, Gabriel, Auriel or Raphael (don’t call him by a nickname)—who are supposedly meant to assist the heroes in their crucial tasks. This ‘aid’ actually adds another level of conflict and, at times, even lends an element of humour to the mix. One of the strengths of the book is that it was a collaborative effort; the four authors each took a turn at writing one character’s story. While the separate segments share a common theme and purpose, they are subtly different in voice. This makes for an excellent balance of consistency in plot measured against individuality of circumstance and delivery of story. Reading Women of the Apocalypse invokes an ominous sense of foreboding that is fitting for this time of year, when the light and warmth of summer is forgotten and we begin to bolster ourselves during the shorter, darker days of fall for the inevitable onset of winter. I’m certain it wasn’t an accident or even coincidence that the book was released nearly a year ago on All Hallows Eve. Take a few evenings this October to curl up beside the fireplace with your blanket, this book, and optional shooter, and discover the ultimate fate of humankind.

Have you ever thought about what is in your everyday hand soap? Well, I have and here is your answer: soap is made of potassium ion or sulphat ion. Contain emulsifying agentsand high in fatty acids, e.g., sodium palmitate (C15H31COONa), sodium stearate (C17H35COONa) etc. soap consists of two partes the hydrocarbon part (C15H31-, C17H35-etc) and poler gr. (COOveNa+ve). Sounds like just a bunch of chemicals to me – so I thought I would checkout making my own soap and then I would know what was really in it. Did you know Bubbles are a sign that a chemical reaction is taking place? Soap bubbles when mixed with water because a gas is being formed when the water molecule and soap molecules collide, bonds are broken, and new bonds are formed. The soap molecule has two different ends, a hydrophilic end (loves water) and a hydrophobic end (fears water). The hydrophobic end attaches to non-polar molecules, such as dirt and grease on your hands and surrounds it, while the hydrophilic ends encase the greasy particles within bubbles essentially and ‘dissolve’ into the water, thus being attracted to the water molecules and getting washed down the sink when you wash your hands, leaving your hands feeling clean. Well, enough chemis-

try for the day. It was hard to find soap I could make with out Lye in it and I really didn’t want to deal with the whole mask and goggle get-up. Here is a really easy soap recipe, but as you can see we use soap to make soap – but my thought is – go to the health food store and get natural soap to make my new soap. I know seems kinda silly, so I guess the way to look at it is you can make natural soap into your own special custom creation and that’s fun. So use your imagination and use this recipe as a guideline and have fun creating the rest. Vanilla and Almond Soap - This soap is great for removing dirt and oil from the skin without drying. Vanilla gives it a delicious fragrance and the ground almonds provide a beautifully textured soap. (Makes one bar.) 1/3 cup whole almonds 1 – 4 ounce bar Castile soap – like Ivory ¼ cup distilled water 1 Tbsp. Almond Oil 1.8 Tsp. Vanilla fragrance oil Grind the almonds to a fine powder in a food processor or coffee grinder and set aside. Shred the soap and set aside. In a heavy saucepan bring the water to a boil; then reduce heat to a simmer; Remove the pan from the heat and add the almond powder, almond oil, and vanilla fragrance oil, stirring until well blended. Spoon the soap into a mold and let set for five hours or until hardened. By: Kathryn Hartwell Page 36

A healthy fall clean up for our bodies

With the summer months now seeming like a distant memory, many of us now are returning to the regular routines that come with fall. Our holidays in the sun have gone, the kids are back in school, and the days seem to be getting shorter and shorter. As well, as the temperature cools, we know that cold and flu season is just around the corner. For many of us, we live a far different lifestyle in the summer months. We tend to have less sleep each day as we are quite often busy with activities, and of course because there are more hours of natural sunlight. In addition, many of us who make an effort to make healthier choices in our diets for most of the year, may abandon our discipline and replace it with “BBQ and Beer” for the summer holiday months. And on top of it, our energy we generally like to devote to a structured plan of physical activity for the majority of the year, is often devoted to sports, yard work, and generally more sporadic and less intense activities in the summer. To sum it all up, in the summer, we tend to eat worse, sleep less, and may be less active. Taking that into consideration, it is no wonder why many of us find it difficult to return to a more demanding lifestyle in the fall! And when we do, we feel less than recharged! Some of the unfortunate results may be that we may have put on a few extra pounds, we find it difficult to rest effectively, our bodies vital organs may be stressed, our minds are not as sharp, our digestion may not be working at its best, and our immune system does not have what it needs to best protect against illness and infection. For an ever increasing amount of Canadians wanting to look and feel better, younger, and healthier, many are making an all natural herbal cleanse part of their regular routine to support good health- just like supplementing with a good multi-vitamin! An all natural herbal cleanse is a fantastic way to “reset” your entire body and overall health. The first goal of the cleansing process is to encourage our bodies to be more alkaline, and less acidic. When we are acidic, or toxic, this puts a great strain on organs like liver, kidney, bladder, and skin. Most herbal cleanses work to flush toxins from the blood, then support and cleanse the organs, and then ultimately work to ensure they are passed from the body through those organs which will expel them. For those who are able to do this effectively, the results which they can feel in 2 weeks or even less can be truly remarkable! Firstly, the results usually come on the scale as many people find they tend to loose weight, and kick start their metabolism. For those who experience issues with poor hair, weak nails, or suffer from skin ailments, this often improves. Many people who have had difficulty in sleeping regularly, this often improves as well. For those with digestive issues www.thenewsyneighbor.com

like gas, bloating, IBS, or constipation, many will see a significant improvement. For some who have lacked energy, many will see a “night and day” difference! (although during the cleansing process itself, it is common to feel a bit lethargic ). And, it is quite common for those who cleanse regularly, they will find that they get sick far less often. In addition while cleansing it is important to drink at least 10-12 glasses of water each day to ensure that the toxins released through the kidneys and bladder are flushed effectively. By incorporating a natural source of fibre like Chia or Flax into our diets, it will work like a sponge in the intestinal tract, and ensure the toxins are expelled through the colon. And supplementing with a complete probiotics formula will help to ensure that the healthy bacteria remains in the intestinal tract throughout the cleansing process. All of these things will help to maximize the results of your natural herbal cleanse.

meadowlarkcarehome.com The Eden Alternative Philosophy

This is an approach to changing the culture of care that our organization, Meadowlark Senior Care Homes is adopting. We hope you too will agree that it is a necessary change to help create a better life for the Elders we serve. The need for changing the culture of Eldercare is upon us. The system is broken, not the people working within it. The past history of long-term care has made life somewhat better, but more needs to be done. What we need is a radical shift in the way we view aging. We need to shift our paradigm and put the Elder in the center of life and rethink how we surround them with the kind of daily life and support they desire. To create environments that are persondirected rather than being based on the needs of the institution. This revolutionary thinking is called the Culture Change movement and Dr. William Thomas, founder of the Eden Alternative, was one of the pioneers in this effort. Studies show that implementation of The Eden Alternative is a powerful tool for improving quality of life for those living in nursing homes. Also, in homes that have adopted the philosophy, there is often improved staff satisfaction and retention and significant decreases in the overuse of medications and restraints. Most importantly, there is a higher quality of life, meaning residents complain less and there are less behavioral problems. The Eden Alternative is also about changing the culture of long-term care organizations. The departmentalized, task-orientation of the current medical model has created a culture that is characterized by pessimism, cynicism and stinginess. By moving away from the top-down bureaucratic approach to management and moving decision making closer to the Elders, Edenizing organizations are rediscovering the true meaning of the sacred work of caregiving. Truths for Mature Humans:

1. I think part of a best friend’s job should be to immediately clear your computer history when you die. 2. Nothing sucks more than that moment during an argument when you realize you’re wrong. 3. I totally take back all those times I didn’t want to nap when I was younger. 4. There is great need for a sarcasm font. 5. How the heck are you supposed to fold a fitted sheet? 6. Was learning cursive really necessary? 7. Map Quest really needs to start their directions on # 5. I’m pretty sure I know how to get out of my driveway. 8. Obituaries would be a lot more interesting if they told you how the person died. 9. I can’t remember the last time I wasn’t at least kind of tired. 10. Bad decisions make good stories. 11. You never know when it will strike, but there comes a moment at work when you know that you just aren’t going to do anything productive for the rest of the day. 12. Can we all just agree to ignore whatever comes after Blue Ray? I don’t want to have to restart my collection...again. 13. I’m always slightly terrified when I exit out of Word and it asks me if I want to save any changes to my ten-page technical report that I swear I did not make any changes to. 14. I keep some people’s phone numbers in my phone just so I

know NOT to answer when they call. 15. I think the freezer deserves a light as well. 16. I disagree with Kay Jewelers. I would bet on any given Friday or Saturday night more kisses begin with Budweiser than Kay. 17. I wish Google Maps had an “Avoid Ghetto” routing option. 18. I have a hard time deciphering the fine line between boredom and hunger. 19. How many times is it appropriate to say “What?” before you just nod and smile because you still didn’t hear or understand a word they said? 20. I love the sense of camaraderie when an entire line of cars team up to prevent a jerk from cutting in at the front. Stay strong brothers and sisters! 21. Shirts get dirty. Underwear gets dirty. Pants? Pants never get dirty, and you can wear them forever. 22. Sometimes I’ll look down at my watch 3 consecutive times and still not know what time it is. 23. Even under ideal conditions people have trouble locating their car keys in a pocket, finding their cell phone, and pinning the Tail on the Donkey - but I’d bet everyone can find and push the snooze button from 3 feet away, in about 1.7 seconds, eyes closed, first time, every time! 24. The first testicular guard, the “Cup,” was used in Hockey in 1874 and the first helmet was used in 1974. That means it only took 100 years for men to realize that their brain is also important.

Monthly column by Jody Brown, designed to help you make better connections and live happier lives. Sometimes we just need to ask the question. Dear Life Lines: This may seem silly, but a while back we went to one of whose psychic trade shows and I had a reading done. A comment was made to me about making sure to purchase life insurance sooner than later. This has bothered me ever since. Is there any way I can get this out of my mind? Overfocused Dear Overfocused; Sometimes people make comments that are not intended to be hurtful or bothersome, but they cause us anguish because of the way we interpret them and store them in our memories and bodies. In your example, you paid someone (a complete stranger, I’m assuming) to share their thoughts and interpretations about you by looking into your future and speculating about it. It might help to remember that this psychic has a vested interest in keeping you thinking about what he/she said as perhaps you will be enticed into coming back for a follow-up meeting to help interpret some of those vague comments that were made. Another thing to think about is that everyone behaves, communicates and responds primarily out of their own interests and motivations in any particular moment. There is an NLP (neurolinguistic programming) technique that encourages you to find an alternate way of stating the same thing that was said that impacted you so much. Perhaps some alternatives might be to envision the psychic saying something like ‘by purchasing life insurance now you will help build your family an investment for the future’ or perhaps ‘we all need to make the most out of our lives and enjoy ourselves right now’. So basically you re-frame the wording to encapsulate the main thought, but in a way that is more comfortable or digestible. No one wants to hear that you are going to die young or even kick off tomorrow, but an alternate message might be to ‘live your life to the fullest and make good investment decisions’. To re-frame it makes the delivery of the message just that much more personalized for you. In order to make the method more effective, try to sit quietly and actually picture the psychic re-stating the comment to you but replacing her words and delivery with the words you have specifically chosen. If you can’t visualize it, perhaps someone can sit with you, playing the psychic and state the replacement statement to you. Envision or enact this a few times repeatedly along with internalizing a feeling of calm and sense of wellbeing along with the specific belief that these thoughts you have formulated are in your best interest. With a little practice, you just might start feeling a little lighter about your experience so that you can move on and focus on those things that you decide really matter in your life. Hope this helps, but if you find you are still stuck, go for a physical checkup to rule out any pressing health concerns that are on your mind. Since there are many cognitive behavioural strategies to deal with a situation like this, feel free to call me and see if you would be interested in pursuing something further. Even as a duo, a couple can take solo paths to retirement

It used to be common for both members of a couple to retire at the same time. Statistics Canada says that’s still the case for higher-income couples and those leaving the work world in their mid-60s. But, for others, a different trend has emerged: a multiyear retirement gap. Using income tax return data, StatsCan analysts recently tracked retirement trends involving thousands of couples between 1986 and 2001. In each case, both spouses worked outside the home. The most common pattern — covering 43% of the couples surveyed — was for the husband to retire first. That’s not surprising, say the study’s authors, because men tend to be two to three years older than their wives. What was surprising was a growing trend in which couples retired five or more years apart. The StatsCan researchers did not ask couples why they retired when they did, but experts suggest many women are now more inclined to keep working after their mates retire because they are more likely to have good jobs than women in the past. Page 44

The Newsy Neighbour

There are particularly high numbers of women in public sector jobs, for instance, entitled to defined benefit pension plans that are based on years of service. It could also be that many women want to make up time after starting a career later in life or taking time out to raise children. Retirement planning, for two Retirement planning becomes more complicated when one spouse intends to stop work well before the other. And this can become a source of conflict if the two don’t discuss their plans well in advance — a fairly common situation. Almost 60% of the respondents in one recent poll of couples with at least one member over age 50 said they had not thought through the financial and lifestyle aspects of retirement. Every couple should have a heart-to-heart discussion about their individual retirement visions, and it’s never too soon to talk about it. On the plus side, a timing gap means that, together, the two of you will need less retirement capital since one person will continue to bring in regular income. On the negative side, while you wait for your spouse to join you in retirement, it may mean delaying plans for extended travel and other lifestyle pursuits. Plan for the unexpected When you plan for your financial security, factor health and employment prospects into your equation. These are major reasons why one spouse may have to retire before the other. You might have a particular career goal measured by salary or pension entitlement. A-Plus Developments comes Highly recommended by Local builders! SELLING YOUR HOME IN TODAYS MARKET You want to sell your home or maybe worse yet you have to sell your home now and all you hear from everyone is how “It is not a good time to try and sell your home” or “No way are you going to be able to sell your home” and then the most scary statement of all is “You will have to give it away or pay someone to buy it from you.” It’s an understatement to say most of what you hear on the news about real estate is not good. With anything you read or hear on the news it many times is reporting the worst case scenario and blowing things out of proportion. What’s worse is many times the news actually is perpetuating the problem by keeping bad news out there longer than the problem. Apparently good news doesn’t sell. In any market people are still buying homes. People are moving in and out of areas for a multitude of reasons and always will. While the numbers may be lower than in previous years there are people still selling their homes and will continue to do so in good and bad markets. www.thenewsyneighbor.com

The good news is that yes you can sell your home if you are motivated to do so and will take a few steps to maximize your chances. Getting started, your first real step is to decide if you truly want to sell or have to sell your home now. Selling your home can be a chore so you have to be up for the task. Keeping your home spotless day after day and being available to show your home at a moment’s notice can be tiresome but necessary. If your market area is declining and you can wait you might want to, however it is all relative. Prices may continue to deteriorate and you may be waiting for awhile. Also if you intend to buy another home then you will be able to buy less as well. In a perfect world you would buy low and sell high but I don’t know anyone that has been very successful at this. Okay you’ve decided to sell your home, now you must get prepared. A huge part of this preparation leads us into the second biggest step which is to throw all your emotions about your home and personal attachment to it, out. You have to look at selling your home as a business venture. Bottom line is you are trying to make as much money as you can.You will have to make your home look less personal, take away the numerous family portraits, so a potential buyer can see your place as their new home. It is not about what you like it is about what they like or want. Now that you are mentally prepared, your third and very critical step is to get your home in order. This means you will have to repair everything that is broken and have your home in tip top shape. In today’s market you will not receive an offer at all or be www.thenewsyneighbor.com

Email: jason@axiommortgage.ca

lowballed if there are a lot of things wrong with your home. As the selling market has slowed down more and more homes are on the market that you will be competing with. Potential buyers will want to take more off the price than it would have cost you to fix it. Start with the repairs at the same time that you start to declutter your home. A potential buyer will only see your stack of papers or dust in all the window seals if it is not clean and tidy. They will never see how spacious and wonderful your home really is. Now you have your home in the best condition it’s been in for years, it probably looks so good that you are rethinking you decision to sell it, but now it’s time to price your home, your 4th and final step. If your home is not priced right, it will not sell, regardless of how great it looks. Your homes selling price will be determined by what a similar home in your area has recently sold for or perhaps a pending sale. This is what a realtor or appraiser will do to determine value. They look at a competitive market analysis of homes that have sold or are on the market currently in your neighborhood. Of course they will add or subtract value based on how your home matches up to other homes that have sold in the last few months. Appraisers and lenders alike look at closed sales within the last 6 months to determine value but in many areas they will only go back a few months now as values have continued to decline in some areas. Whether you are selling your own home or working with an agent it is universally agreed that the above steps are mandatory.

I Believe... That our background and circumstances may have influenced who we are, but, we are responsible for who we become. I Believe... That you shouldn’t be so eager to find out a secret; it could change your life forever. I Believe... Two people can look at the exact same thing and see something totally different. I Believe... That your life can be changed in a matter of hours by people who don’t even know you. Believe... That even when you think you have no more to give, when a friend cries out to you, you will find the strength to help. I Believe... That, credentials on the wall do not make you a decent human being. I Believe... The happiest of people don’t necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything they have. www.thenewsyneighbor.com

Aryn Linda Geremia A baby girl... one of the most beautiful miracles in life, one of the greatest joys we can ever know, and one of the reasons why there is a little extra sunshine, laughter and happiness in your world today. -Author Unknown

We want to welcome a very special little girl into the world and into The Newsy Neighbour family! Aryn Linda Geremia was born September 14th at 8:52 P.M., weighing a healthy 8.4 lbs and a whole 19.5 long – and only after 12 hours of labour. Good going, Denise! Now we have a second sales girl to add to the team! She is made of sugar and spice and everything nice and is absolutely the most adorable little angel! We all fell in love with her the second we met her. Congratulations Denise and Ryan, you will be wonderful parents. Denise would like to send a special thank-you to the readers and advertisers for all the well wishes and cheers.
