HAPPILY EVER AFTER. Beautiful homes built better. We believe in building homes that are handed down from one generation to the next. It’s why we design sophisticated, livable interior spaces, adorn them with dramatic, timeless exteriors, and craft each and every one with cutting-edge materials and technologies. Because if it’s not a home you can be proud of for years to come, it’s not worth building in the first place. Accept nothing less.

LUSCIOUS JOYS Yummmmm, bio-photonics. Don’t they sound just yummyful? They do to me because I know what they are but I bet you don’t; and I would be surprised if you did! I just found out myself!! If you have been reading “The Newsy” for a while, you are all aware what a juicer I am. I’m always researching different fruits and vegetables so I can mix it up a bit with my daily regime. That is when I stumbled across an article on bio-photonics. It is the energy found in food. It seems each food has its own energy, live fresh food having more bio-photonics than other foods. Makes sense to me. The energy is passed from the food into your body and that is the reason you feel so good when you eat or juice fresh food. How cool is that? This may not all sound so Luscious at this point, but I’m here to prove to you that fresh food can be luscious and now that you know you are gaining a life force, an energy from these foods, that idea alone sounds pretty luscious to me. So let’s get down to business and venture into the realm of luscious fruit and vegetable recipes! Luscious Chocolate Avocado Mousse 4 ripe avocados 1 cup agave nectar 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 1 tablespoon vanilla extract Remove flesh from avocados and cut into pieces. Place all ingredients in a stand mixer (or food processor) and blend until light and smooth. Chill at least a couple hours, top with Greek yogurt or ice cream. Luscious Pineapple-Raspberry Parfaits 2 8-ounce containers (2 cups) nonfat peach yogurt 1/2 pint fresh raspberries, (about 1 1/4 cups) 1 1/2 cups fresh, frozen or canned pineapple chunks Divide and layer yogurt, raspberries and pineapple into 4 glasses. Luscious Creamy Cucumber Salad 1 organic English cucumber (about one l lb.) 1/2 Vidalia onion, peeled 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar 1 teaspoon organic cane sugar ½ cup best quality Greek yogurt 2 tablespoons fresh dill, chopped Zest of one lemon Slice the cucumber and onion as thinly as possible. Place slices in a colander, sprinkle with the salt, stir and seat the colander over a bowl to catch the released liquid. Refrigerate for one hour. Discard the extra liquid and now rinse the salt from the cucumber and onion. Drain well and pat the slices dry using kitchen towels. Turn the cucumber and onion into a medium-sized bowl and add the sugar and vinegar, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Fold in the yogurt, dill and lemon zest. Chill for an hour, stir again ( juices will have settled) and serve. Luscious Fresh Peach Trifle 6 large ripe peaches - peeled, pitted and sliced 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 2 (8 ounce) containers vanilla yogurt

1 teaspoon lemon zest 1 (10 inch) prepared angel food cake Place peaches in a large bowl, and gently toss with lemon juice. Place 1 cup of peaches in a blender, set aside remaining slices, and blend until smooth. Place yogurt into a bowl; stir in the peach puree and lemon zest until well blended. Cut the angel food cake into squares and place half in the bottom of a glass dish. Spoon half of the peach slices over the cake. Cover with half of the yogurt mixture. Place remaining cake squares over the yogurt. Top with peaches, reserving 5 or 6 slices for garnish. Cover with remaining yogurt mixture. Garnish with peach slices. Refrigerate until ready to serve. Luscious Cauliflower with Peanuts and Coriander 1 small to medium cauliflower Lime juice 5 tbsp. roasted peanuts, coarsely chopped 2 tbsp. fresh coriander, finely chopped 1 tbsp. sesame seeds 1 garlic clove Sea salt and ground black pepper Pinch of sugar 1 tsp freshly grated ginger root 1½ tbsp. rice vinegar 1½ tbsp. toasted sesame oil 1 tbsp. soy sauce Trim the leaves and most of the stalk from the cauliflower, and cut the florets into small pieces. Put these in a food processor and process until very finely chopped and a little like fluffy white grains. Transfer to a bowl. For the dressing, crush the garlic with a pinch each of salt and sugar, and combine with the ginger, vinegar, oil and soy sauce. Pour the dressing over the cauliflower add a squeeze of lime, scatter over the peanuts, coriander and sesame seeds, mix well. Luscious Bananas in Caramel Sauce 1/2 cup butter 1 cup superfine sugar 1 1/4 cups heavy cream 4 bananas, peeled and halved lengthwise Melt butter in a large, heavy skillet over medium heat. Stir in sugar and cook, stirring, until sugar is melted and light brown. Slowly stir in the cream (mixture will bubble up). Let mixture boil 1 minute, then reduce heat to low. Place the bananas in the pan and cook until heated through, about 2 minutes. Serve hot. In an article on the Integral Health Guide website, Tristan Anderson, a certified holistic health practitioner trained in nutrition, says wild dandelion greens, nettles, grasses, mushrooms, nuts and berries rank high on the bio-photonic list. A person eating a diet of junk food only had a reading of roughly 1,000 units of bio-photonic radiation and the average reading from a person eating live or raw foods was about 83,000 units. Wow, that is a huge difference! So I guess the lesson here is to eat a diet rich in raw fruits and vegetables that have been freshly picked from your own organic garden if at all possible. I’m hoping the fruit and vegetables I’m purchasing at the local grocery still have a few bio-photons left. My way of thinking is raw is still way better than processed and packaged food. Guiding you thru the STEPS ..... of Real Estate.
It’s just the very beginning of the fall season I’m feeling that certain crispness in the air, the chill of the wind and all my squirrels are starting to squirrel away all the nuts I feed them. They are funny little rascals. Over the summer I’ve even got a couple of them taking the nuts out of my hand, it’s exciting when you can become that close to nature and feel a part of someone’s else’s family, even if it is a squirrel family. THIS ISSUE, is like that! Our family has grown too! In this October Issue of “The Newsy” you are going to enjoy a whole bunch of new types of articles, actually I was quite overwhelmed when I read through the final draft of the magazine. The diversity and variety of completely different features in this issue is awesome, there is something for just about everyone. Just to give you a an idea of the scope of the October Issue there are articles, features and stories about, but not limited too; Bio-Photonics, healthier snacks, Turkey, Halloween parties and ghosts, your soul, babies, inspiration, baking your own Biscotti, play-offs, being happy, loving your body, essential oils, foods to balance your hormones, your defense against the flu, flossing your teeth, being a Canadian, home renovations and sooooo much more, I’m out of breath. Quite frankly I don’t know how our incredible designer fit all this incredible information in this 64 page Issue. Now that is talent, not to mention all the talented contributors. All I can say is Holy Cow!!!!! You’re going to be blown away!! Make sure to check out page 18 for a special issue announcement. In February, we are going to have a “Restaurant Menu” feature in the magazine. You can pull it out and have all our local menus (from participating restaurants) all in one convenient place! We can’t wait!! Kathryn, Aleesha and Denise

loaded down with fats such as butter, sour cream, melted cheese and bacon bits. But take away the extra fat and deep frying and a baked potato can be good for you as it also contains a variety of phytonutrients that have antioxidant activity. Among these important health-promoting compounds are carotenoids, flavonoids, and caffeic acid, as well as unique tuber storage proteins, such as patatin, which exhibit activity against free radicals. I’m going to feel a little less guilty the next time I indulge myself with a treat of McDonalds French fries. But that is not the point I wanted to make in this article. I wanted to talk about all the new “healthy” other baked fruits and vegetables people are making these days in the form of fries or chips. Things like sweet potato fries, carrots, and beet and apple chips. Roasted Carrot Fries – Slice up some carrots French fry style, toss with some olive oil, salt and your choice of herbs. Bake in a 350°F oven until you obtain your desired crispness and serve with Ranch, French or any other dipping sauce you feel like. Ok, this is not rocket science; this same recipe works for any and all vegetables your little heart desires: parsnips, beets, turnip, sweet potato, pretty much all the root vegetables, not forgetting the lowly potato and what an easy snack for after school!
SNACKS Truthfully, French fries really aren’t that bad for you; actually, the plain old potato is an exceptionally healthy low calorie, high fibre food that offers significant protection against cardiovascular disease and cancer. Potatoes are a very good source of vitamin B6 and a good source of potassium, copper, vitamin C, manganese, phosphorus, niacin, dietary fibre, and pantothenic acid. The thing is, most people eat potatoes in the form of greasy French fries or potato chips, and even baked potatoes are typically
When it comes to baked fruit chips, the same rule applies. Mix sugar and cinnamon or any other spice you desire, slice your desired fruit (apples work the best) bake on baking sheet at 225°F; long and low, until you have your desired crispness, and your home is going to smell amazing. This is great for an after school snack or perfect for lunches. ANYTHING TO MAKE YOUR LIFE A LITTLE EASIER! WE ARE HERE FOR YOU! Kathryn Hartwell Sources: www.instructables and www.inspired taste.

change begins in the smallest of ways. You're being supported to create energy of transformation that will take you far from where you are now. There is a great force of synchronicity at your disposal. All you need to do is allow, and be brave enough to act. Begin things. End things. Be active in creating this new life. You deserve to be happy and fulfilled. • Love and friendship is coming your way. What a kind, loving and beautiful soul you are. Right now there is a wonderful opportunity for you to bring magic to some existing relationships, allowing them to be revitalized. There is also the opportunity to meet new people who will become significant in your life. As you love, so will that love be returned, deepening the relationship and giving you new levels of emotional connection and satisfaction. • Be purposeful in bringing your gifts to the world. You know it. The Universe is calling you, reminding you that it's time. Time to write that book, start that business, invest that money, study that thing which furthers you somehow. Trust that you have something valuable to share with the world. Believe in yourself now, and invest in yourself and your dreams.
My Favourite – Fabulous – Fantastic And Fun Stuff
You don’t have a soul. You are a soul. You have a body. ~C.S. Lewis
The word “ancient” conjures up a feeling of mysticism for me; I imagine old books and scriptures that hold magical stories and formulas of long lost secrets. I love learning about old ideas of “ancient wisdom,” the beliefs of the wise old men of the world that tell stories of lost inner knowledge people do not practice anymore. It makes me all shivery!! One definition of “ancient wisdom” is “knowledge passed from generation to generation, along with the burden of breathing new life into the beliefs. Through this ancient chain of benefactors and beneficiaries, wisdom has threaded its way through the eons to our age, which is why it is called ancient wisdom.” It is all so fantastic and fabulous, don’t you think? O.K. the thing that goes along with all this ancient wisdom and knowledge is that there is a message for all of us from the cosmic universe in regards to the way we perceive our mind, body and soul. I bet that is not something you think about every day, is it? When was the last time you gave any thought to your soul? No, I’m not preaching to you; as a matter of fact, I do not consider myself a religious person at all, but there are certain things I do believe in and I do believe I have a soul. I also believe we often let our minds guide and inform us, or the thoughts and opinions of others. But I believe there is a source of great truth and inspiration within us – and by looking within ourselves, we can find answers to things we’ve thought about forever. Not long ago I came across this list of captions, advice or prophecies, or whatever you choose to call them. I find these words to be very powerful and life changing. I know for a fact some of these will resonate within all of you. It never hurts to ponder your life sometimes. • Trust your own judgment. It's time for major change, even if that

• Nature has great restorative gifts for you right now. Maybe you need to change your diet to include a wider range and quantity of fruits and vegetables. Perhaps what is needed is more time in the outdoors, or a hobby or sport that allows you to move more and to feel the sun on the face and the wind in your hair. A holiday in the mountains or by the sea? Perfect! • Honey, you need some fun! What are most needed in your life right now are activities that bring joy. That could be hanging out with friends, listening to music, travel, playing games, starting a hobby or joining a group. Do what makes your heart sing. If you don't know what that is, then gift yourself time to find out. • Spirituality and time for connecting to your Inner Wisdom needs to be a priority right now. Expect magic. Expect clarity, breakthroughs, inspiration and guidance from unexpected but helpful quarters. You have a powerful intuitive side, and it's time to learn how to connect with this wisdom and guiding force within you. • Courage. It's time to go back to, and heal your past. There are issues and situations from your past, that, in remaining hidden, unspoken or unresolved, are preventing you from healing, from knowing expansion, from allowing you to transcend these falsely imposed limits. Sometimes it is possible to simply get into an allowing space, and 'let go' of that old energy without having to examine or re-live it. Sometimes we benefit from guidance and professional help and advice. Always, we benefit from thinking on the blessings and the lessons inherent in those situations which have caused us pain. • There is a special magic around you right now, bringing breakthroughs, help and miracles. Connect to Loved Ones who have crossed over, Ancestors you have never met, members of your Soul Group, Fairies, Guides, Angels and all kinds of other Light Beings. Know that you're not alone. Know that you are heard, and that help is coming. Perhaps you had an “aha” moment as you read through this little article. Maybe something made a little more sense to you. Maybe, just maybe, your life could be different from this moment forward. Sometimes it just takes one single moment to change a life. Kathryn Hartwell The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

First, pick your perfect bird; there are lots of choices out there. If you’d prefer a traditional fresh or frozen bird, pick the healthiest-looking one in the weight range you need. And, remember, fresh may not necessarily be better than frozen; frozen turkeys are snap-frozen just after butchering. Figure on 1 to 1 1/2 pounds of turkey per person and add a few pounds on for bones. For example, 8 people will require a 12 to 14-pound turkey.
YOUR PERFECT THANKSGIVING TURKEY What is your perfect Thanksgiving dinner? The obvious answer: turkey, dressing, gravy, mashed potatoes, sweet potato, cranberry sauce, jellied salad and, last but not least, pumpkin pie with whipping cream. For some reason or another, we also always have Brussels sprouts with cheese sauce. That is Thanksgiving dinner in our house. I cannot even count how many turkeys we have cooked over the years and even though the number is in the high double digits, I never can conceive why each and every time I cook a turkey I worry about cooking time, stuffing and gravy. It’s like you forget the most basic rules of the perfect stuffed turkey dinner from year to year. I found these turkey cooking tips on 4 different sites and combined them together; everyone seems to have a different idea on how to cook a turkey.

Pre-salting is the key to a juicy bird. Remove the giblets from the turkey, and refrigerate them for later use. Then pat the turkey dry using paper towels. Sprinkle two tablespoons of kosher salt and one teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper liberally all over the turkey, spreading a little in the cavity and being sure to season the back, the breasts, and the meaty thighs. If you’ve never pre-salted before, this may look like too much salt, but it’s not. As the turkey sits in the refrigerator, the salt will gently permeate the meat, improving the water holding ability of the muscle cells so that, when cooked, the meat stays juicy yet does not become overly salty. Arrange the turkey on a wire rack over a rimmed baking sheet, and refrigerate uncovered (this dries the skin, which helps it turn crisp during roasting) for one to two days. Create a natural roasting rack for your turkey by layering carrots, onions and celery on the bottom of the roasting pan. Lifting the turkey off the base of the pan helps to increase hot air circulation around the whole bird so that it will get crispy all over. And the vegetables add great flavour to the gravy. Happy Thanksgiving stuffing cooked right in the cavity of the turkey. Go ahead and use your family recipe, but we suggest you cook the stuffing in a separate pan. Cooking the stuffing in the turkey can provide fertile ground for the growth of harmful bacteria. In addition, a stuffed turkey will take longer to cook, which could result in drier white meat. Instead, loosely fill the turkey with aromatics such as onions and herbs, and cook the stuffing separately. Remove the turkey from the refrigerator about two hours before roasting to take the chill off; this also helps it cook more evenly. Before putting it in the oven, make sure the skin of the turkey is as dry as possible, and then rub it all over with butter or oil. For even moister meat, place pats of butter under the skin. Heat the oven to 450°F. Tuck the wings behind the neck, and tie the tips of the drumsticks together with kitchen string. Arrange the turkey breast-side up on a rack in a sturdy

roasting pan. Slide the turkey into the oven, immediately lowering the heat to 350°F. The first hint that the turkey is ready will be the tantalizing aroma that fills the kitchen; you can count on its cooking for about 13 minutes per pound. To be sure, pierce the meaty part of a thigh with a sharp knife, and check that the juices run mostly clear with only a trace of pink—don’t wait for them to become completely clear, a sign that the turkey is overdone. To double check, insert an instant-read thermometer into the thigh, careful not to hit bone; it should read 170°. When the turkey is done, grab both sides of the roasting rack with oven mitts to lift and tilt the turkey, and let the juices pour from the cavity into the pan. Set the turkey aside, tenting it very loosely with foil, to rest for at least 30 minutes while you make your gravy and put the finishing touches on all your side dishes. It is at this point in my house when I find my children hovering around the turkey looking for a nibble of crispy skin. Can you blame them?! However you cook your turkey, you know it is going to be absolutely perfectly wonderful!

The truth about Chicken Skin. YUM!! The aroma and flavour of chicken roasted to crisp perfection in its own skin and fat. Most people ditch that wonderfully delicious skin, but do you really need to? Three ounces of boneless chicken WITH the skin contains about 170 calories and seven grams of fat, only two of which are saturated, and the skin actually contains protein, phosphorus, iron, calcium and even Vitamin A. Chicken skin does, however, contain fat, so skipping the margarine and using a fat free salad dressing instead will help balance this.

GRATITUDE and HOPE 2 and a half years ago, my life changed forever. I became part of an incredible community story here in Strathmore. It is one that I am thankful for every day. The community I am talking about is Hope Bridges Society.
SECTION
Hope Bridges is a local organization dedicated to connecting all adults using the universal language of the arts. Hope’s goal is to create a community where everyone knows they belong, where they can express themselves safely and find active support for themselves. No matter who you are, there is a place for you at Hope Bridges.
Coming SOON!! February Issue 88
This openness to all adults has had a profound impact on my thinking, my heart and my values. Hope has taught me the value of integration - I now take the opportunity to include others in my life no matter who they are or where they come from. It has demonstrated to me that everyone is a person - my language around individuals that are in any way different from me has changed. It has shown me that the arts are even more powerful than I thought; that anyone can learn and use the arts to speak. And it has challenged me to think differently about how we build community and the impact that our choices make on the individual.
BOOK NOW READERS:
How fantastic would it be to have all of the take-out menus nicely kept in one place, easy for you to grab and flip through when you are trying to decide what you feel like eating and where you feel like ordering from?
The story that Hope is writing is a powerful one. My interpretation of it is this: By creating a community where we learn from one another and remain actively involved in one another’s lives, each individual is strengthened. When individuals are confident, strong and uplifted, our communities become better places to live.
One fantastic issue of The Newsy Neighbour magazine is going to do just that. We will have all of the local take-out menus from participating restaurants in our February 2015 Issue!
Although there are valuable segregated opportunities, I prefer the idea of the individual overall being healthier and stronger because of the support of an inclusive community. Don’t you?
RESTAURANT OWNERS:
There are 2 ways to get to know Hope and join the story: 1. Come hear local and regional artists perform at the annual live inclusive performance gala called “Artists Among Us” on October 23rd at Hope Church 245 Brent Blvd. in Strathmore. Tickets are only sold at the door and are just $10. Doors open at 6:30. Performance starts at 7 pm. There is a dessert bar after the performance. 2. Or watch on YouTube a short story on film I had the honor to direct and appear in: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fASdbA_Hwho (search Hope Bridges Society)
I would encourage you to become part of this profound story. There is nothing like it in the world. Strathmore is incredibly fortunate to be the home of Hope Bridges. I believe that what Hope is about has the potential to change the world.

How to have an AWESOME Spooky Halloween-ish party for the un-crafty penny pinchers Not that there are really any secrets in my world of over-sharing and self deprecating nature, but I suppose one could say that there are some things I opt out of talking about in such a public forum. The fact that I cannot, do not, and hate to craft is not one of them. I mean, I REALLY hate it. Martha Stewart would be ashamed, but I’d still laugh in her face if she asked me to make macramé pine cones or some other ridiculous project. It makes my skin crawl. I suppose it also doesn’t help that I am TERRIBLE at every single thing I have tried. Which isn’t much… but still! Terrible! Some people say that I can write, I can play just about any instrument you hand to me, and about a bajillion years ago in a past life, I was once a singer - but when it comes to using my hands for anything other than picking my nose and wielding a pencil, I fail.
our decorations came from one of those, which saves a load of cash, because some party decorations don’t come cheap.
Oh well! We can’t all be good at everything! Thing is, once you have kids, whether you like it or not, the day will come when you HAVE to craft. You have to. There’s no getting around it. Personally, I think I did a pretty good job of avoiding glue, scissors and construction paper - and then along came birthdays. There’s REALLY no getting around that crap! Due to my deep-seeded loathing of booger and poo-filled cesspools that are fast food play places and warehouses full of bouncy castles that DON’T LET PARENTS PARTICIPATE, we have parties at home. This means that all of the work to make the place party-ish is on me. Derp. Dumb move on my part. If people are going to come to my house for a party, I want it to be the BEST PARTY EVER!!! Yes, in all caps and with three exclamation points. I’m that kinda serious about this party business. I go ALL OUT. I have hand-made pirate t-shirts and bandanas. I have made cupcakes that look like Mater. I have made bandanas for every party goer. I have even combined two different themes into one perfectly (cowboys and Mickey Mouse). Everyone always asks how to do the things I do, and for recipes for the things I bake - so this year, the “Ghosts, Ghouls, & Zombies Birthday Bash” I’m telling y’all my secrets! These things could work for a Halloween party, costume party, any party where you need a delicious baked good. Bake and craft away, peoples - ’cause I’m DONE for the next year!
For the rest? Check your local thrift stores. We scored two motion activated Halloween decorations - a zombie that pops out of a casket and a snack bowl that has a hand that pops out at anyone trying to grab some yummies - for under $10 total! Baking is where I am strongest, though. I like to keep people talking for the entire next year and to look forward to what I’ll be whipping up! This year I made: Chocolate chip bones: They are shaped into bones by a cookie pan I got from Target, and the mix is just my favourite chocolate chip cookie recipe, but I’m sure you could use pre-made and have just as good of a result! The label I drew myself- I cut the cardboard from a brownie mix box!
In order to deck out your house in all kinds of creepies, crawlies, and spookies, head to your nearest dollar type store (there are many!). Seriously! You would not BELIEVE the goodies they have there for a buck in the months before during and even a bit after Halloween season. Nearly all of

I can’t forget to mention the Jell-O shaped like brains!
Peanut Butter Oreo Brownie “cupcakes”: A lot of people asked me if I piped the skulls and tombstones myself. PSH, NO! They are actually lollipops! Another dollar store score. All I did was cut the stick short enough to be used as an anchor and stuck them right on top. Super EASY and super cute!
And, of course, the BIG mama jamma! The cake! I went with a white chocolate bundt cake which we made to look like a grave
These were done with molds I snagged from Target - and they were cheap! The wrapped brain is from Dollar General (are we sensing a theme, here?). We also had dips that we dyed to look disgusting - one was zombie snot (spinach and artichoke) and the other was festering puss (French onion) it was fabulously disturbing. One thing we REALLY had fun with was a graveyard backdrop we snagged from a Halloween store for people to pose in front of, especially the zombie children. We weren’t satisfied with a picture of a graveyard, we had to make our own - with super cheapo headstones from the dollar store, and hanging ghosts from Party City (but you can get from any Halloween store, party store, or probably even chain stores like Wal-Mart and Target). And here are some more decorations picked up for a buck, just because!
This could honestly work with any cake mix, and will be delicious! For the topping, it’s just melted semi-sweet morsels, and melted white chocolate morsels dyed with food colouring to look like blood. The grave came from (of course) the dollar store! I couldn’t JUST feed people sweets, so I made some hors d’oeuvres and gave them new spooky names for added effect!
“Severed Arm Rolls” “Fried Fingers”
More seriously - anyone can throw a spooky party for SUPER cheap! We lucked out in that the boys both have September birthdays, right when Halloween stuff is just coming out so nothing is out of stock - so stock up now for the future! Holdin’ Holden Jenny Schoberl is a 30 year old professional musician turned stay-at-home. In order to keep some semblance of her adult-brain working, she began writing the popular Mommy Blog “Holdin’ Holden” in 2008, which receives over 1,000 unique hits per day. Jenny also enjoys entertaining her ever-growing Facebook Fan Page with over 51,000 fans who have dubbed her the “Howard Stern of Mommy Blogging”. onsters hosts and ther Haunted Things! What is a host? In traditional belief and fiction, a ghost is the soul or spirit of a dead person or animal that can appear, in visible form or other manifestation, to the living. If you are haunted by a ghost, the ghost wants your attention. Children and animals are more likely to actually see a ghost. Spirits can communicate with us in various ways. In dreams, through subliminal thoughts, automatic writing, via the use of a pendulum, and intuition. Other, more scientific ways are through white noise Want to speak with a ghost? Ask questions using a digital recorder. They often answer at low decibel levels, which you can hear during a playback at higher volumes. These are known as EPVs. Ghosts can smell things and love the smell of lemons. Ghosts can leave behind certain scents, such as perfume. Ghosts can make sounds that are audible. Ghosts use their energies and ours to move things. Noisy, troublesome ghosts are known as poltergeists. Children perceive ghosts as imaginary friends.
What is a onster? A Monster is an imaginary creature that is typically large, ugly, and frightening. Monsters peer and prowl, roar and ravage in myths and legends the world over. Monsters are creatures that represent everything that is fearful about the natural world and the darker corners of human nature. Monsters are by definition unnatural, something that should not exist.
Haunted Things... A haunting occurs when a ghost or other supernatural being refuses to move on after death, instead choosing to dwell among the living. Irish legend has it that one day the devil himself came to take the soul of a thieving man named Jack, who eventually became Jack Of The Lantern, doomed to aimlessly walk the earth with nowhere to go. According to superstition, there is a good chance on Halloween that you are being shadowed by Death himself, and if you look upon him it will be your end.
Many monsters are hybrids, the offspring of unions between demons and animals or people. 22 •

Halloween Treats Anyone? Housewife Hands Out Treats of Arsenic and Ant Traps In 1964, Long Island housewife Helen Pfiel was arrested for handing out goody bags containing dog biscuits, steel wool pads, and arsenic laced ant traps to teenagers who she felt were too old to be trick-or-treating. To Pfiel, the bags were an obvious joke–the ant traps were clearly marked “poison” and she did warn the trick-or-treaters that her bags were not to be ingested. Concerned parents contacted police and Phiel was arrested, taken in for psychiatric evaluation, and charged with child endangerment. She pled guilty and her sentence was suspended a year later. Here are more tips to help your baby fall into a natural and gentle sleep: 6. Encourage Baby to Feed during the Day.
Registration for Fall
Dance Classes
When tiny tummies are fed frequently, baby will start falling asleep and stay sleep for longer and longer stretches between feeds. Sometimes you will find baby will sleep more than four hours during the day; this is when you can GENTLY unwrap baby and offer them a feed, and this might save his longer sleep for nighttime. But if baby is not ready to change his sleeping pattern, be patient, as he will soon enough.
Over 50 classes to choose from; Tap, Ballet, Jazz, Acrobatics, Lyrical/Modern, Flexibility and Strengthening, Musical Theatre, Hip Hop, Aerial Dance, Acro Dance, Tot Trot, Skip Hop Jump, Contemporary, Recreational and Competitive Programs.
7. Teach the Difference of Day from Night.
New short-term programs starting in October.
Keep the lights low and attend to baby quietly during night feeds; save the chatter and play for daytime.
In October come try a class for free!
8. Do Not Disturb.
Try to change the diaper either before or half way through a night feed and not when baby is drowsy and full. If you find baby falling asleep during a feed, change the diaper, make it a short feed and switch to the other breast, if breastfeeding.
403-901-6392 Hours: Mon. - Thurs. 5:30-8:00pm & Sat. 10-12pm
9. Try a Top-Up Feed.
It does not matter when your baby fed last, offer a feed just before you go to sleep. Try not to wake baby; he will suck in his sleep and with any luck, will sleep longer. You might then find baby wakes up the same time as you do.
10. Falling Asleep on Momma.
For most babies, falling asleep on Momma’s breast is the most natural way to sleep; this is not a habit you need to be concerned about. But if you are, try alternating feeding with other sleep cues.
Natural Choices
11. Share or Co-Sleeping.
This is one of the most talked about issues. Some parents agree with this method and others do not. The research shows that mothers and babies who sleep together share the same sleep patterns; so overall, mothers get more sleep. If you do decide to share sleep, remember the SIDS Risk Reductions Guidelines: maintain a smoke-free environment (don’t co-sleep if you are a smoker), place baby on to his back, avoid overheating baby, make sure you keep baby’s head uncovered and use a firm mattress (NO waterbeds). Both parents should avoid alcohol and medications or anything that reduce awareness of baby. Parents need to do the research, talk to their pediatrician and do what feels right.

Part 2 - Natural Tips to Help Baby Sleep Better
12. Leave a Little of Mom with Baby.
Even an unwashed t-shirt over baby’s mattress will have a familiar smell of mom. It may not be the exact substitute for you, but it can help baby feel more comfortable and settled for going to sleep.
13. Turn the Clock to the Wall.
Remember that babies are individuals and each one has a different sleep pattern, just like you and I. If you are one of those sleep deprived parents and you feel like a baby should be getting 8-10 hours of sleep, you are sadly mistaken. For babies, 5 hours of uninterrupted sleep is ideal. Here is a short recap of the tips I shared in September’s Part 1: Watch for tired signs, create a bedtime routine, the importance of snuggle up and rock-a-bye, use relaxing and calming sleep sounds, and cut out the caffeine.

This can be beneficial for both of you, since sometimes knowing how long you have been awake for can be enough to make you too tense to get back to sleep. Looking at the clock can also encourage you to rush to baby and make him feel anxious. The more relaxed you are in those night hours, the quicker you will both get back to sleep! I hope these natural tips help baby and you sleep better and long. Good night and sleep tight! The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

REPETITIVE ADVERTISING
over again until they ‘get it’.
“Advertising isn’t a one-shot game. The more often people see your ads, (to a point), the more likely they are to respond to your offer.” I don’t know why it is, but some entrepreneurs think one or twoshot advertising is going to land them in the Money Makers Hall of Fame. If that were true, we’d ALL have a plaque hanging there! Advertising is a numbers game. You win by staying in the game, not bailing out when you don’t get the immediate responses expected from that great ad you just sent out. Frustrating and time-consuming? Maybe, but either you’re serious about what you’re doing or you’re not. Being in business requires commitment to on-going, never-ending marketing and promotion of your products and services. The one-shot deal doesn’t work. What HAS proven successful time and again is Repetitive Advertising. Simply put, it’s the process of making sure your ads remain in front of people over and

Let’s take the best example of Repetitive Advertising there is television! Think of the countless times you have seen the same commercial day in and day out. You can probably think of a couple right now; why do you think those businesses came to your mind? Could it have anything to do with their advertising? Even relative junk has sold in the millions thanks to the magic of Repetitive Advertising. Some experts have concluded that people need to see an ad a certain amount of times (7, in most cases) before the message begins to sink in (notice I said “begins”). Sometimes they need to see it even more before they commit to buying into it. Repetitive Advertising reinforces the idea and captures the sale! There’s no question that advertising can be expensive. In fact, cost holds many people back from doing as much as they should. This only gets in the way of success and doesn’t have to be that way. Think of all the different ways you could advertise your business: business name on your vehicle, business cards handed out and placed in as many available locations as possible, print media, internet, websites and so many more. It may be impossible to make money without advertising but whatever your budget is there is a form of advertising that will work for you. Don’t put advertising on the back burner! If you do, it WILL hurt your business in the end. The Newsy Neighbour Magazine Inc.

Teen Poverty ?? We just spent several hours observing teenagers hanging out at our local mall. We came to the conclusion many teenagers are living in poverty. Most young men we observed didn’t even own a belt; there was not one among the whole group. But that wasn’t the sad part. Many were wearing their father’s jeans. Some jeans were so big and baggy they hung low on their hips, exposing their underwear. I know some must have been ashamed that their father was short, because his jeans hardly went below their knees. They weren’t even their daddies’ good jeans, for most had holes ripped in the knees and a dirty look to them. It grieved us, in a modern, affluent society there are those who can’t afford a decent pair of jeans. I was thinking about asking my church to start a jeans drive for “poor kids at the mall.” But here is the saddest part... it was the girls they were hanging out with that disturbed us most. Never, in all of our lives, have we seen such poverty-stricken girls. These girls had the opposite problem of the guys. All they had to wear was their little sister’s clothes! Their jeans were about 5 sizes too small! I don’t know how they could get them on, let alone button them up. Their jeans barely went over their hipbones. They had on their little sister’s top, hardly covered their midsections. Oh, they were trying to hold their heads up with pride, but it was a sad sight to see these almost grown women wearing children’s clothes.
We know it saddens your heart to receive this report on condition of our teenagers. While we go to bed every night with closets full of clothes nearby, there are millions of “mall girls” who barely have enough material to keep it together. We think their “poorness” is why these 2 groups gather at the mall; boys with their short daddies’ ripped jeans, and girls wearing their younger sisters’ clothes. The mall is one place where they can find acceptance. So, next time you are at the mall doing your shopping, and you pass by some of these poor teenagers, would you say a prayer for them?

The Finest Italian Cookie I did make Biscotti about a year ago and it turned out darn good, if I do say so myself. So I thought I would have another go of it and share the event so you too will know how to make this wonderful Italian cookie. The word Biscotti might bring fear into the heart of any good baker, but I am here to tell you it only seems exotic, but it’s just as easy as any other old cookie recipe, maybe just a little more labour intensive. I really did my research on this and ended up combining 4 different recipes into one and making my own unique Biscotti. I’m going to call it “Kathryn’s Special Biscotti;” what else?!
You will have to mix the cranberries and nuts into the batter with your hands – just dampen your hands a tad to make the mixing a little easier. Form the mixture into a log and then divide it in half.
My recipe consists of: Dry Ingredients: 2 cups Flour 1 cup sugar (I used cane sugar; you can use white or brown sugar, whatever you prefer) 1/3 cup cocoa powder 1 tsp. baking powder ¼ tsp. salt
Flatten the two halves into about 12” long logs and then flatten to your desired size.
Wet Ingredients: 3 eggs 2 tsp. pure vanilla extract 1 tsp. almond extract 3 tbsp. butter ½ cup cranberries (or Craisins) ½ cup pistachios, almonds, peanuts or cashews
Place each log onto parchment paper on a baking sheet. Bake for 20 minutes in 350°F oven. Take out and let cool for 30 minutes, then slice into biscotti sized cookies.
Place back onto parchment paper and return to a 300°F oven for 6 minutes. Turn cookies over and cook for another 6 minutes.
First, mix all the dry ingredients together in one bowl with a spatula, and all the wet ingredients in another bowl using a hand blender. Then mix them both together.
Ta-da! You just made beautiful, delicious biscotti! See, wasn’t that easy?! Once you have combined the two bowls, you will find the dough very stiff.
And tomorrow morning (or tonight before you go to bed!), if you can wait that long, you are going to feel all proud of yourself for making your own homemade Italian cookies! 100% natural with no preservatives! They go PERFECT with a good cup of coffee! Kathryn Hartwell

chance as everyone to win a championship. In the Canadian Football League however, it’s a different story. Calgary Stampeder fans likely remember the 2001 Grey Cup Championship. The Stamps were a terrible team during the regular season but they won 3 of their last 4 games to sneak into the playoffs with a dreadful 8 - 10 record. Marcus Crandell pulled off his best Warren Moon impersonation and the team stunned the 14 - 4 Winnipeg Blue Bombers in front of 65 thousand fans at Olympic Stadium.
“Once you are in the playoffs, anything can happen!” This is a cliché we have heard often in the NHL and it gained even more momentum when the Los Angeles Kings won the 2012 Stanley Cup as the number 8 seed in the Western Conference. What most fans don’t remember is the Kings were one of the hottest teams in the league in the second half of the season, racking up an impressive 25 - 13 - 11 record after Daryl Sutter took over the team just before Christmas. They were also the first team in NHL history to win a Championship as a bottom seed.
So as you might expect, I don’t exactly buy into the theory that once you are in the NHL playoffs you have an equal 32 •

Fast forward to the 2012 CFL season. The Stamps were a 12 - 6 team and a huge favourite to win it all against the hometown Argos in the 100th Grey Cup Game. The Argos won their final two games of the regular season and squeaked into the playoffs with a 500 record. They embarrassed the Edmonton Eskimos in the East Semi Final and then stunned the Montreal Alouettes in the East Final. The moral of this story and the point that I am trying to make is it really doesn’t matter how you make the playoffs in the CFL, they key is you have to be playing your best football of the season in late October and early November. In Calgary, we have been spoiled by fantastic regular season play in the John Hufnagel era. His regular season record is an

impressive 83 - 36 – 1( at the time this article was written). In the post season, it’s a different story. Hufnagel’s record is 5 - 5 and there is just the one CFL championship in 2008. Hufnagel and the entire organization is not happy with this lack of post season success and it has certainly been a hot topic on our call-in show and Stampeder football broadcasts on Newstalk 770. I recently confided in a friend who has been a consultant for Canadian and Russian Own the Podium Olympic programs. The Own the Podium formula is really quite simple. It’s all about conversion. If you are a first place team in the division, it would be considered Gold Medal Potential. The Stamps have finished first three times under Hufnagel and they have won one championship. That is a 33% conversion rate. Not bad but not great under the OTP guidelines. If you feel the Stampeders had medal potential all 6 years under Hufnagel and only converted once, then the percentage goes down to 16. This would be considered unacceptable and the OTP recommendation would be to keep the program and fire the coach. I have a lot of respect for John Hufnagel and I certainly believe he is one of best coaches in the history of the Calgary Stampeders. However, he is 63 and it’s safe to say he will not coach forever. If the Stampeders do not win a championship this year, do we see a scenario where Huff steps down to focus strictly on the GM duties and hands the reigns over to the head coach in waiting Dave Dickenson? It may sound a little farfetched but I guess anything can happen! The bottom line for the Stampeders: Get healthy and get hot over the next month and a half and it won’t even be a story! But then again, this is only the regular season. About Jock Wilson: Jock has been involved in the Calgary sport media scene for over 30 years. He hosts the Calgary Stampeder football broadcasts on News Talk 770 and is the co-host of Sportstalk with Mark Stephen from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm.

The men who gave away billions of dollars It’s always good to give to the less fortunate and if you have a little extra to give, fantastic. Billionaires Warren Buffett and Bill Gates are two of the richest people in the world, and the most generous. Warren Buffett, a.k.a. “The Sage of Omaha,” is one of the most successful and respected investors in history. The majority of Buffett’s huge fortune was amassed through Berkshire Hathaway, a company for which he is the largest shareholder and CEO. Ranked as Forbes wealthiest man in 2008, his net worth was estimated at roughly $44 billion in 2012 – and this is AFTER he made American history by making the largest ever charitable donation by an individual – $37 billion to Bill Gate’s charity, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The donation announcement came within days of Mr. Gates making an announcement of his own in which he would step away from his day-to-day role as head of Microsoft to focus on his foundation. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s goal is to fight disease and promote education around the world. Although Buffett’s donation is the largest of its kind, it is being paid in installments. In 2010, Gates made the world’s largest single charitable donation with $10 billion to be used for vaccines for children. As of 2012, Bill Gates had given $28 billion dollars to charity. www.oddee.com

Here are three of my simple strategies: 1. Pay it forward. Take a walk and with every person you pass, make eye contact and smile. I promise you, the more you share your happiness, the more you will have. 2. Laughter. Do some laughter yoga with your children, your spouse and your family. It’s almost impossible to shake a gloomy day with laughter yoga. 3. Practice Gratitude. Notice what you are grateful for. Create a family gratitude journal (no rules, no judgements) where anyone gets to write what they are grateful for. The little ones can draw a picture of something they love, it’s just another way of showing what they are grateful for.
Let Your HAPPY Out
Written by Carla Lomenda-Segovia of Lomenda Energy Inc. Photocredits: B Subbotina Anna from shutterstock.com
Are you waiting for something to happen before you can be happy? Perhaps you have some goals and when you meet those goals you will be happy. Some examples are: “I will be so much happier when I lose this baby weight.” “When our house is done being built, life will be so much better.” “When my business takes off, just wait, it will be so awesome.” “I can’t wait to be done with diapers, I just want this potty-training to be over.” What is it that holds you in this state of being less fulfilled than you are capable of? It is time to let your happy out, regardless of your circumstances. Circumstances is a fancy way of saying excuses. No more excuses. You can be happy in every moment if you choose to be. You can be happy no matter what the circumstance. You just need to make happiness your choice. So how do you choose to be happy? It’s kind of like riding a bike, you just get on and do it. Once you get it, you never look back. When winter passes do you get back on your bike and say, I can’t remember how to ride a bike? You know how to be happy; it really is that simple. You were created and born happy. You have had millions of happy moments in your life. Now it’s time to tell your face and all parts of you that you are happy.

These are some strategies that I know and love. You know you best. While we finish the harvest season, spend a few moments and harvest your happy moments. Take notice of what made them happen. You chose in every moment to be happy. You chose to feel aligned within you and with all around you. You chose to experience bliss. So go out a grab it. Share a smile, share a laugh. Keep on riding your smiling bike on the way to meeting and exceeding all of your goals and dreams.

Excuse me Nurse, can you repeat that? There is a brilliant movement afoot. Most everyone will know what I am talking about when I refer to its common media tags – body shaming, body love, body acceptance... I find it fascinating the media is tagging the very movement that it is responsible for – the idealization of the human body, be it the female or male form, has become so pervasive that we can no longer look at the images we see in the media as actual true representations. They paint, perfect, stretch and thin, round out and beef up, through the miracle of CGI and Photoshop, and send these images out into the world as marketing tools. Marketing tools that work! In addition to perfect bodies, hair and teeth, the image is made even more powerful by these images being presented in striking settings, surrounded by other perfect people - if only we buy this product or invest in this service, our body (and, somehow, our life) will be transformed into this. It’s a miracle! I thought I was pretty immune to my own personal reactions to this pervasive media action. I am aware of the influence that this media culture has upon my self-image, have read some of the research, and actively follow the movement that is rebelling against it. I am aware that I am not unaffected, and I continually catch thoughts going through my mind - the gap between me and the imagery and verbiage of the ideal that I have unwill-

ingly been indoctrinated with through countless images and expectations. Thoughts that occur on a sub conscious level, I know, but I really thought that my awareness of the psychology of it all was enough to release the power of it. Then I got weighed at my last doctor’s appointment. Holy crap. Up until about the moment I heard the number (I had to have the nurse convert kilograms to pounds so I could understand), I was content with my body. Truthfully, except for a few aches and pains, I was content. I could look in the mirror and think, “Hmm, not bad for 35.” My husband sure seems to approve of it, and every wife knows that is a great way to feel pretty. Right now in my life, I feel I am in good health and good body condition, as best as at any other point in my adulthood. If this is how I felt about my body before I heard the number, why would I feel different after? It makes sense that my weight would reflect how I feel, right? But it didn’t. For 20 years my body has yo-yo’ed all over the scale, upwards of 30lbs several times, 60lbs when I was pregnant. This was a number I hadn’t heard since my mid pregnancy days... My husband was as surprised as I when I first told him. Then he shrugged it off and told me I look great. Muscle has substance. I am in decent yoga shape – must be the muscle... And since I am intellectually aware of all the things I have listed above, I figured I would be able to let it go just as easily. But... the next time I looked in the mirror, my body looked different. My clothes felt different. I noticed the roll around my belly, the way my thighs rub as I walk, the way my butt looked in extended side angle pose as I planned my next class... Here I am, a week after this appointment, still thinking about what the number that that stupid scale was. Grrrr. So much for being enlightened about the whole body awareness and acceptance movement. So I am writing this down as a selfish cathartic exercise, and hope that in doing so, I am not only lessening the power of this silly number, and of all the perfect images that I have seen, but learning to really accept my body as it is. Despite the numbers that the scale says, despite the images of what I am supposed to look like, I want to learn to fully 100% accept my body. Beyond that I want to learn to love it. I am realizing that there are unconscious thought patterns, deep The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

habits that I don’t even recognize are happening, that occur all the time. Then something like this happens (seriously, it’s just a number, what’s the big deal?) that shakes me up – somehow a light is shone into the darkness of my mind, and I become aware of the self-destructive thoughts, habits and beliefs. I do not own a scale. I have been known to lecture friends on the fact that the scale is not an effective representation of your health. How you feel is. Eat well, portion control, be active, create good lifestyle habits, and that is all that counts. Your body is perfect in its imperfections. Seeing as I have been consistently changing weight by relatively significant amounts every year of my adult life, I can proudly say that my habits are not always the best... but that does not discount my efforts to improve them. I am going to continue to work towards accepting my body as it is. I now know with certainty our society, starting right here with myself, still has plenty of work to do in re-educating the masses, and the individual, as to what is actually worth striving for. We need to continue to promote that healthy people come in every shape and size, and that every single person has value, such great value, that has nothing to do with how they look on the outside. The ancient yoga texts teach that we are neither the body nor the mind, but rather we are the witness that has the ability to observe both. I think if we can all learn that, we will have a one up on this process. I will continue to observe my thoughts as I work through the body image issue that I didn’t know I had... I will continue to explore the beliefs and values I

Tis’ pumpkin season, everyone!! I don’t know about you, but when I think of fall, I think of pumpkin. Pumpkin everything; pumpkin pie, pumpkin spice lattes, pumpkin waffles, pumpkin muffins, pumpkin carving and hunting; literally everything pumpkin! I feel as though pumpkin has become the scent of fall; it is what supplies us with those warm, fuzzy feelings despite the outside climate becoming cooler.

So, now that I have you thinking about pumpkin, I need to admit that the rest of this article is not about pumpkin. Unfortunately, to my knowledge, there still is not a pumpkin oil; however, if there was, you can be sure I would have it!! What I want to highlight is the sense of smell that is associated with the smell of pumpkin and its spices, the scent of fall and family and cozy warm evenings filled with laughter and memories. This month I wanted to highlight some oils I associate with pumpkin and spice and everything nice! The best news may be that diffusing these oils and blends will not only help create warm, welcoming scents in your homes, but you and your family will get to reap the benefits of each of these powerful oils and NONE of the residual will go to your hips!! Have your home smell like a pomander ball without the sore thumbs!! Just add these oils to your diffuser.

Defence Against Cold and Flu With school well underway, we are hearing all about how everyone is already bringing home coughs, colds and flues. It is easy for parents to be frustrated or to resign themselves to this being normal. Just because something is COMMON does not mean that it is NORMAL! Ever wonder why your kids are always sick and yet other classmates are not?
You have a great tan from our amazing summer ... Don't let it fade away as the weather changes and your fall routine starts. Just a couple visits a week will keep your tan looking great year round.
Germs are around us all the time. Every second of every day. Our bodies have natural defence mechanisms that work hard to protect our bodies from these naturally occurring illness causing germs. We need to keep our bodies healthy and functioning at optimal levels, especially during “cold and flu season”. Our first line of defence is our skin. This is why it is important to frequently and thoroughly wash our hands and teach our kids to do the same. Hand sanitizers, although popular, are no replacement for good ol’ hand washing. Hand sanitizers, and “antibacterial soaps” for that matter, kill off both harmful bacteria and all beneficial microbes that are vital to our health, not to mention that they are full of harmful chemicals that are aiding in the rise of “superbugs”. Instead of focusing on killing all the germs that we may come in contact with, what if we changed our internal environment so that the bugs cannot survive or propagate? Our bodies’ next line of defence is our mucous membranes. Everywhere there is an access in our bodies to the outside world, there are membranes whose job it is to secrete mucous. Mucous traps foreign agents and keeps them from entering any further into the body. We then sneeze or cough them back out. This being said, it is important to cough or sneeze into your elbow instead of your hands, where it can be readily passed person to person. When these defences fail, the body’s immune system is there to attack all foreign invaders like the cold or flu bug.
In between - keep your skin well moisturized and hydrated for longer lasting color.
The immune system relies on a properly functioning body to support it. It needs a body that is fuelled well with good food. The immune system relies heavily on protein to make the “killer” cells that seek and destroy the harmful invaders. This production can be suppressed for hours by the ingestion of a variety of substances such as moderate amounts of sugar. If you or your child is “always sick”, it may be time to re-evaluate what you are taking into your body.
The immune system needs a body that gets lots of sleep, regular exercise, fresh vegetables and fruits, plenty of water, daily Vitamin D, and that is relaxed. How does your body stack up? Alicia Flint NCP Langdon Chiropractic See ad on page 9

Did you know that flossing can extend your life? We all know that it’s important for you to see your local dentist and hygienist regularly to maintain your oral health. Although your hygienist may go over brushing and flossing technique during a dental cleaning, she/he may not share with you all the advantages that come with embracing some waxed floss. Did you know that flossing can extend your life? Really! We’re not making this stuff up in an attempt to get you running to the bathroom to floss like a crazy person!! Daily flossing can really extend your life due to keeping bacterial levels, and therefore associated inflammation, to a normal level. Floss is considered an inter-dental cleaner – meaning, it cleans in-between teeth; removing food debris, plaque, and bacteria. If not removed, plaque levels increase along with bacteria, which results in increased acid formation and irritation to gum and bone tissue. The inflammation that occurs in the mouth is displayed as puffy gums that bleed easily and pull-away from teeth in an attempt to avoid the irritation.
Cook with Tea. Add the health benefits and flavour of tea to your meals. Try cooking Jasmine or basmati rice with Earl Grey Tea. Use tea as a liquid to thin cranberry sauce or gravy. Tea contains antioxidant plant chemicals called catechins, which have been linked to cardiovascular protection and anti-cancer effects.
Gums that are inflamed, puffy, and have pulled away from the neck of a tooth create the perfect environment for more trapped food debris, plaque formation, and further inflammation. It’s a vicious cycle – no flossing plaque development – plaque development creates swollen gums – swollen gums provide an area for food particles to become trapped – more plaque forms, and on and on. But, just a few minutes spent every day flossing teeth can stop the cycle and control the level of plaque and bacteria in the mouth. A few minutes a day is all it takes, but the rewards are huge as the consistent removal of food debris and plaque contributes greatly to maintaining clean teeth and healthy gums, and helps reduce the risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, and other physical diseases. We would encourages all patients to invest a few minutes each day brushing and flossing. This easy, but effective, method of keeping teeth clean helps prevent tooth decay, bad breath, gum and bone loss and premature loss of teeth. What have you got to lose by not flossing? Your smile and your health!
So go ahead and have your tea on a plate.

Canada: Are We Facing An Identity Crisis or Identity Theft? Via the power of social media, a group of radical, violent extremists has captured the world’s attention. It appears they not only want to wage war at their geographical location but also have a desire to instigate it globally. Popular news media advise us that the battle has come to our side of the world due to the presence of hundreds of fighters within the Islamic State carrying Western passports.
W
ars are primarily fought for control of real estate, money and power. Messages of nationalism and religion are used to activate the masses, appealing to their shared beliefs and values. Have you ever participated in a Statistics Canada survey regarding nationality? I have, and although a 3rd generation Canadian on my father’s side, saying I Am Canadian was not acceptable to the interviewer. Scary, right? Recently I was informed that a school division in central Alberta sent home a note during the first week of classes advising parents that to create a “more inclusive environment,” the Canadian National Anthem would no longer be sung. This can be interpreted as school administrators and teachers suggesting that the Canadian Anthem divides rather than unites us. Perhaps in the rush for Canadian economic growth, we failed to recognize the importance of building on the similarities

within the diverse population calling this nation home rather than highlighting the differences. Travelling across Canada and within its cities, one encounters communities that developed and grew based on factors such as geography, climate and language reminiscent of where folks originated. Why did these people come? Was it for adventure or to take advantage of new opportunities or to escape rigid regimes that restricted political participation to a limited prosperous class? If legislators and bureaucrats do not allow us to be Canadian by origin or by choice with an allegiance to our country and flag, they provide the opportunity for puritanical movements to radicalize those residing within our borders. Once radicalized, they may not choose to leave the country to fight but rather stay at home protesting loudly against the values that provided them with free speech (this is currently happening in Britain and beginning in Canada). This could lead to more repressive legislation within Canada. Ten years ago, Toronto lawyer Syed Mumtaz Ali announced that an “Islamic Institute of The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

Civil Justice” would shortly begin arbitrating family matters on the basis of sharia law, accompanied by a warning that Muslims who did not submit cases to Islamic arbitration panels were not “good Muslims.” This was struck down by the Ontario provincial government and with it arbitration from any religious group. As the physical numbers of those sharing these beliefs increase, so does the possibility of this decision being reversed. We may not understand why people chose to participate in what we consider repressive; however, the possibility of that belief being imposed here opposes the tenets I believe this country was founded upon. Identity crisis often occurs during adolescence (Canada is a youngster on the global stage) when faced with growth and integrating ideas of how we think of ourselves and what others think of us. Canada has always struggled with its identity, claiming it more by what we are not than by what we are. Teenagers resolve this crisis as they learn to deal with issues of trust, autonomy and initiative – struggles we are facing across the country. Canada benefits on many fronts because of its rich cultural mosaic; however, we need to be aware that there are groups and philosophies that wish to identify themselves as Canadian; however, their loyalty lies elsewhere. Identity theft occurs when someone pretends to be someone else by assuming that person’s identity (read Canadian), usually as a method to gain access to resources or other benefits. This can lead to many adverse affects to those (read Canadian) whose identity has been assumed. How we weather this identity crisis or potential identity theft as a nation is up to us. It is time to put aside passivity and actively engage in a dialogue with both our neighbours and our leaders

“Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson
Dear Lifelines, My adult son keeps asking for money for him and his family but never pays it back. I’m not sure what to do. Limitless Dear Limitless, It sounds like your son is going through some tough times – or perhaps he’s always been this way? When we start seeing patterns in behaviour and we become a part of that pattern (like lending him money and allowing him not to pay it back), it will never improve or change unless someone changes the pattern. Someone involved in the pattern needs to do something differently and this forces everyone else to shift their behaviour. Making the decision to do something differently and then following through on your plan can be a big step. Sticking with the change and not reverting back to your old behaviour can be very difficult - but it can be accomplished with effort and making the end result your focus. As much as some of us feel like it is necessary to get involved in family difficulties and to help rescue those in a bind, making it a habit can put a strain on your life – and your bank account too, in this case. It can also stifle the other person’s growth as a person. Remember, you are not necessarily helping them when it’s a continual issue. As adults, it’s important to be able to problem solve and learn to respond to the many challenges in life. If we are constantly rescued, we might never learn how to cope with challenge and adversity in a constructive way and may continually rely on those around us for help (money in this case). Think about what you would do in a similar instance. Were you raised to rely on others to pay your way through life? Would you ask a relative for money or take out a loan or line of credit for yourself and repay it back as required? Or would you create a budget so you could set money aside regularly in order to purchase the item you need? There are a lot of ways to the top of a mountain and maybe you can come up with a way that doesn’t necessarily involve instant results. By setting your own boundaries and sticking to them no matter what excuse is given, you may start to find yourself feeling a lot better about getting back in control as a parent – no matter what the age of your child. Changing your behaviour pattern might very well result in anger, resistance and rejection on the part of the other person. If you remain calm and consistent in your plan and your behaviour, you will show them that you are not rejecting them; you are just setting limits for yourself. You can still love them, do activities with them and be a part of their lives, but as for

PAINTING TIP: Avoid cheap roller covers and brushes. This one is important. Cheap roller covers leave fuzz on the wall. Cheap brushes leave streaky brush marks. Avoid those multi-packs of rollers, like ten for a dollar. Pay the extra few cents and get better tools. It'll be worth it. Honest, it will!

Millions of people would love a chance to wipe their feet on Adolf Hitler and now it looks like they could have the chance with the ‘Hitler rug’. The work is by Israeli artist Boaz Arad who says he is hoping to show how the Holocaust has scarred Israel, but also been misused by it. He says the rug is a representation of what a Nazi hunter would do if he caught the ultimate prize, the Nazi leader.
Summer is now in the rear view mirror. We have had a brief taste of the ‘snow’ word and fall is upon us. Soon we will hear the sound of the furnace running, more lights on – electronics running as less outside time happens.
To see a picture of this rug visit the “Highlights” page on our website. www.thenewsyneighbour.com
This is the time to look at saving a few nickels (no more pennies, remember?) by ensuring our home appliances are in ‘keep us happy & safe’ mode. Some of the well-known ones are of course batteries or smoke/ CO detectors, furnace filters and operating maintenance checks as well as locating the dreaded snow shovels and other winter tools and tires. Doors and window seals should also be big energy points on our lists.
FARM SUCCESSION Farm succession is a process not a single event. With planning you will save taxes and provide all of your children with an equal share value of the farm, thus creating a legacy of harmony and goodwill for your family.
One area that can be neglected is our (usually) faithful appliances. The fridge and dryer being two notable potential culprits in our energy cost control.
CALL US TODAY FOR A FREE CONSULTATION ON HOW PLANNING CAN BENEFIT YOU, YOUR FAMILY AND YOUR FARM.
1) Check your fridge condenser, (usually a set of thin black tubes under or at the lower back of the fridge) for being blocked by dust, hair, etc. The fridge gets rid of heat through the condenser and cannot properly cool if it is blocked. This can mean more energy use and a potential fridge failure.

2) Check your fridge door seals for small gaps. Letting warm air in (cold air out) through seal gaps can cause excessive run time and poor performance. If you have ice & water, this is a good time to change your fridge water filter after a summer of heavy use. 3) Your dryer uses energy to take warm air from your house and put it (along with lint and moisture) outside, while also drying your clothes. Anything that interferes with this makes your dryer run longer and less efficient, i.e.: venting. In addition to being a fire hazard, blocked venting reduces the amount of air a dryer can exhaust and results in long run times. For safety reasons, dryers should not be vented inside and never vent a gas dryer inside. After each load, remove, check for holes and clean your lint screen. Safety again - do not run a dryer without a lint screen.
There are various small things that can be done to improve or maintain your appliances efficiency and operation. Check with your Use and Care Guide or if you have any concerns, hear or weird noises, or if there’s a changes in operation, contact your local independent appliance retailer for advice and professional service. 4) Self-clean your oven if required. Do not wait until three days before Thanksgiving. Self-cleaning generates a lot of heat and if anything is going to go wrong, it seems to be after a self clean just before a holiday as you are preparing to cook the big one. 5) Check your washing machine hoses. Look for worn spots or bulges. It is suggested regular hoses be replaced every five years. Make sure your drain is flowing freely with good water output. For HE washers this is a good time to clean them – wipe the door seal (bellows) and use a cleaner designed for HE washers.

How To Paint Wood Panelling Like A Pro
Once the primer is dry, caulk all the gaps you see along the top of the baseboards, crown molding and seams. Fill the holes with filler compound. Put a tiny dab of compound on your finger and push it into the holes, smoothing as you go. Sand lightly to smooth, if needed.
This is what you need: Degreasing cleaner Flexible sanding sponges Primer Caulk and caulking gun Filler compound Paint and painting tools Lambswool roller
Paint the paneling. Cut in with a trim brush and finish with a lambswool roller, which will hold more paint than a synthetic roller and get into the groves of the paneling. If some of the crevices are deep, turn the roller sideways and slide it up and down the groove to push the paint in. Count on two coats of paint for complete coverage.
Go over the paneling with finishing nails and a hammer to make sure all the seams are tight and no nails are sticking out. Combine washing and sanding the paneling into one-step. Mix a solution of water and a heavy-duty degreasing cleaner. Thorthenewsyneighbour.com
Drying with a rag will leave little fibres that will show up in the paint. Prime before you fill and caulk the paneling to expose the holes and gaps in the paneling that might not be visible against the dark wood. Use an oil-based primer because some paneling will bleed through water-based primers.
If you own an older home, chances are at least one wall in your home has that old wood paneling that was so very popular back in the day. It can be reclaimed and made to look quite charming; going from dated, paneled wood walls to brightly painted ones is a dramatic change.

oughly scrub the walls down with the flexible sanding sponge. They hold up quite well in water. Rinse and let dry naturally.

TIPS TO LIST TO SELL: What about the Money? Buying a home can be overwhelming, whether you are a first-time home buyer, or you are selling your current property and looking for a new place to live. It is very easy to look at listings online and day dream yourself into that perfect home. But ask yourself, ‘can you afford it’? The Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) has

Keep in mind, there are a wide variety of online mortgage calculators available; but punching in your own numbers and calculating a mortgage amount you can afford, may not be completely accurate. Down payment, utility costs, debt load and property taxes are all included in the calculation, along with your mortgage payment. Do you know what you are going to put down for a deposit on the home you want to buy? This amount is often overlooked by anxious buyers and is a crucial part of purchasing a home. Before you seriously begin looking at houses, take a moment to sit down with a mortgage specialist. Get a conversation started about your plans to buy. It doesn’t matter if you are buying in one month or one year, it is important to find out where you are at financially, so you are free to search for your perfect home, without misconception. Do you have savings? A Registered Savings Plan (RSPs)? Family members who are willing to help with a cash gift? If you have RSPs, this can be a great option to use for obtaining a mortgage. Confirm with your mortgage specialist or your account manager to see if you are able to use your RSPs. You may be able to access them with the understanding you will pay them back over a period of time, without having to pay taxes on them. The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

I’ve come to the conclusion there are two different types of people that decorate their homes. There are those that can look at a random pile of things – not even home decorating things, just things – and arrange them artfully with minimal effort. And then there are the rest of us. The decorating types can go to a garage sale, pick through a pile that looks suspiciously like the trash someone forgot

to take out when cleaning before the sale, and find the one random item that completes their look. They do not suffer immediate sensory overload in a home decorating store jammed full of knickknacks and doo dads. All this stuff, these random finds, get absorbed into their home and become a magazine-worthy artful display. It’s worth noting these decorating types usually don’t own small children. Around this time of year, I usually have an urge to do something decorative and artful in my own house. I’d probably be well advised to grab a decorating magazine and a bottle of wine (bottles?) until these urges go away as I, clearly, am not one of these natural decorator types.

This year felt like a good year to paint my kitchen and create an artful display of knickknacks on top of the cupboards. The creative beauty of my kitchen display would draw visitors into the warmth of my house, evoking feelings of comfort, while leaving them assured of my culinary expertise. Or at the very least, it would distract them from the random piles of clutter scattered around the rest of the house. On a related note, I’m not sure who thought the “open plan” concept that is currently popular was a good idea, but I’d like to have words with them about that.

The painting part would be easy; how hard can slapping a coat of paint on be, after all? The hard part would be figuring out where to stop. I really just wanted to work on the kitchen but due to the openness of my floor plan there are no obvious breaks from room to room. In the end, I decided the whole main floor needed sprucing up; the painting part just got a little… bigger. No problem. This did open up the question of what colour. The existing “decorative” items in the living room lean towards blues, reds and early childhood stains; holdovers from a previous house/decade as I also lack the “decorating on a shoestring” knack. The kitchen is more of the brown persuasion, dictated by the colour of the countertops and backsplash. In between is the dining room; a no-man’s land of decorative nothingness. The current wall colour on the whole floor is very bland…uh… neutral with a contrasting bland on the window and door trim. I wanted to keep the contrast but loose the bland. This fall I’ve spent a lot of time in paint stores gathering colour chips, then more time holding chips against random wall spots under different lighting conditions, trying to find the perfect colour. The colour to de-bland; bring the kitchen, dining and living room together as one, with new counters meeting out-ofdate couches in perfect harmony. And the one conclusion I’ve reached after all this decorative work? I need more wine and less chips. And a friend that’s a decorating type.
I like my house to be unique to me. Sure, I’ve bought plenty of things out of a catalog, but the way I put them together in my home is special. You might have bought your sofa at a major home decorating store, but the rug you found at the flea market is so unique, it takes your room from ‘carbon copy’ to ‘simply yours’ in no time. - Nate Berkus

he one thing that is so predominant in the fall is the beautiful rich colours – bringing the outside in is key when adding a fall flare for your home. If your home is quite neutral, this is the perfect canvas to bring in the golden reds, burnt oranges and copper. However, if you have quite strong colours in your home you can still add some autumn flare but in lighter tones; always keep balance in mind. Use what’s in your back yard and bring in some twigs, acorns, branches and berries – an array of foliage displayed on a front entrance table in a dramatic vase will welcome your visitors. The fire place mantel is also a great way to display and layer items to repeat the theme throughout the home. Framing leaves in a simple black frame could add to your current art collection and/ or be hung or layered in a gallery style, leaning on or above fireplace mantel. Table centre pieces – candles with fall scents within your home will create a comfortable and cozy setting. Pumpkins are always a symbol of fall, but they don’t have to remain in their natural state – spray painting pumpkins in an array of fall colours and displayed on your front steps will create a unique and warm display upon your guests arriving. Now is also the time to spend a little more time inside and to add some extra comfy to your space. Switching out cushions and adding textural throw blankets on your couch will make

From high-heeled shoes to dog paws and kitchen spills, your home’s flooring faces tough challenges every day. When it comes to choosing a floor that will stand up to today’s hyper-active households, experts recommend laminate for its low-maintenance, realistic beauty and durability. But savvy shoppers should keep in mind that not all laminates are created equal, especially when it comes to long-term performance. To find the best floor for your high-traffic home, look for the following:

Superior surface protection. Flooring is exposed to numerous factors that can wear, tear, scuff and dull its surface over time. For this reason, it’s important to select a laminate with a high level of surface protection - like the new PERGO XP collection. Offering double the wear resistance and durability of ordinary residential laminate floors, the collection features a unique surface layer that combines extreme wear performance and 30 percent greater scratch protection to better withstand the heavy traffic, spills and splashes that everyday life dishes out.

Quality composition. Of course, a floor’s performance
is much more than surface deep. Choose a laminate with a high-density core (10 mm total product thickness is ideal) and attached underlayment. Not only will these premium materials offer greater stability and a more realistic sound underfoot, but installation will be easier and faster.
Easy “click” installation. Laminate is the perfect mate-
rial for do-it-yourselfers wanting a weekend project because most install with planks that literally “click” together. Look for laminates that offer locking systems that don’t require glue for installation that’s both easy and secure.
