From the Publishers Well, September is here. Some of you may be saying “finally,” while others are probably saying “already?!” Personally, I am one of those “already?!” people, but that will probably change once my kid is only enough to be in school. This is our 5th Annual KIDS issue. That means we have been publishing for over 5 years. WOW! Love it! As usual, we have lots of interesting facts, jokes and overall good entertaining reading in this issue. Something for the men, women and, of course, the kids. Try the mad-libs with your children on page 16; you are bound to laugh out loud with that one. There is an Art Walk coming up on September 28th. I have never been to an Art Walk. I will be sure to check that one out. Remember, you can see a bunch of upcoming events and classes on The Newsy Neighbour events calendar on the website. Visit - www.thenewsyneighbour.com and click on Events Calendar. I am going to wrap this up and keep it short because I need to leave room for our “Apology” letter. Please make sure to read that. It breaks our hearts to hear when we offend people. Last but not least, make sure to order a copy of the I Am A… cookbook (Page 53) and the Pouty Puppy Children’s book (page 24), both books were done by The Newsy Neighbour team mates! Have a wonderful September!

Last month we put in a little ‘joke’ called “The Message,” and my goodness gracious, it caused quite a stir!! We received a few complaints in regards to this ‘joke’. We at the Newsy Neighbor work very hard every single month to keep a smile on your face and to deliver fun, interesting and unique articles for our reader’s enjoyment. Never ever would we purposely print something to try to upset you – it goes to show how diverse our reading audience is and reminds us how each and every single person is unique in their thinking. We respectfully submit our most sincere apology to anyone this ‘joke’ may have offended!! You know we consider you all family! The Newsy Neighbour

Voted Calgary’s Best Consignment Shop! CHESTERMERE STATION WAY • Unit 213, 175 Chestermere Station Way Phone: 403-235-0352 For those who have sons & those of us who are happy that we don’t. You find out interesting things when you have sons, like... 1. A king size waterbed holds enough water to fill a 2000 sq. ft. house 4 inches deep. 2. If you spray hair spray on dust bunnies and run over them with roller blades, they can ignite. 3. A 3-year old boy’s voice is louder than 200 adults in a crowded restaurant. 4. If you hook a dog leash over a ceiling fan, the motor is not strong enough to rotate a 42-pound boy wearing Batman underwear and a Superman cape. It is strong enough, however,

if tied to a paint can, to spread paint on all four walls of a 20x20 ft. room. 5. You should not throw baseballs up when the ceiling fan is on. When using a ceiling fan as a bat, you have to throw the ball up a few times before you get a hit. A ceiling fan can hit a baseball a long way. 6. The glass in windows (even double-pane) doesn’t stop a baseball hit by a ceiling fan. 7. When you hear the toilet flush and the words “uh oh”, it’s already too late. 8. Brake fluid mixed with Clorox makes smoke! 9. A six-year old boy can start a fire with a flint rock even though a 36-year old man says they can only do it in the movies. 10. Certain Lego’s will pass through the digestive tract of a 4-year old boy.

Pool filters do not like Jell-O. 15. VCR’s do not eject “PB & J” sandwiches, even though TV commercials show they do.

www.edgdancestrathmore.com Fascinating facts about your baby • Your baby shares his or her birthday with at least 9 million other people in the world. • Reading to your child at any age will increase their knowledge. • A four-month-old fetus will turn away if a bright light is shone on the mother’s belly. They also react to sudden loud noises. • A fetus develops unique fingerprints at the age of three months. • Babies learn sign language before they can talk. They learn the meaning of waving goodbye, hugging and kissing long before they can speak. • Your baby is born with very sophisticated hearing and can work out where a sound is coming from just 10 minutes after being born. • Your baby is born to smile. We know this because blind babies also smile, so it’s not just copying. • Your baby is sensitive to temperature and although she can’t throw off clothing or bedding to cool down, she can do other things. When she is cool she will move around more and when she is warm she will lie as if sunbathing, Page 14

The Newsy Neighbour

with her arms and legs flung out to the side. You can use these signs to work out if your baby is too hot or too cold. • Your baby’s sense of smell is much stronger than yours and he will use it to get to know you in the early weeks. To help him, try to avoid really strong perfumes, deodorants or washing powder and be aware that some household smells may be quite overpowering for him. • At birth it takes your baby between five and 10 minutes to get used to something new, but by 3 months it will only take between 30 seconds and two minutes. And at 6 months, your baby will adjust in less than 30 seconds. • Your baby could sense how you were feeling even in the womb! Researchers asked pregnant moms to listen to various types of music through headphones and then measured their babies’ movements with ultrasound. Most babies became more active when the music was on, especially if their mom was listening to music she liked. What is fascinating is that the babies could not hear the music; it was only audible to the moms, so the babies were responding to their moms’ emotional responses to the music. • Touch is one of your baby’s most advanced senses at birth and even premature babies born as early as 25 weeks are aware of being touched. Your baby’s sense of touch develops from head to toe, so her mouth is the first region to become sensitive, which is why young babies put everything in their mouths. • Your baby’s cry has been specially designed to make you sit up and take notice. Researchers have discovered that new moms are able to distinguish their own baby’s cries from a ward full of other babies just three days after giving birth. • In your baby’s first year, his brain will double to become half its final size. Kids Section First Job A young family moved into a house next to a vacant lot. One day, a construction crew turned up to start building a house. The young family’s 5 year old daughter naturally took an interest in all the activity going on next door and spent much of each day observing the workers. Eventually the construction crew, more or less, adopted her as a kind of project mascot. They chattered with her, let her sit with them while they had coffee and lunch breaks and gave her little jobs to do here and there to make her feel important. At the end of the first week, they even presented her with a pay envelope containing ten dollars. The little girl took this home to her mother who suggested that she take her ten dollars “pay” she’d received to the bank the next day and start a savings account. When the girl and her mom got to the bank, the teller was equally impressed and asked the little girl how she had come by her own pay check at such a young age. The little girl proudly replied, “I worked last week with a real construction crew building the new house next door to us.” “My goodness gracious,” said the teller, and will you be working on the house again this week, too?” The little girl replied, “ I will if those as*&#!es at the Home Depot ever deliver the fu!#&ng sheet rock...”

Kids Section Why Is Touch So Beneficial For a Healthy Baby?

REGISTER TODAY!!

By Cynthia Barnesky Studies show that without touch or massage, we can become ill. Babies lose weight, have more health issues, and will have a hard time developing healthy relationships without touch. The art of touch is selfmassage and massage. Receiving touch or massage can help strengthen your baby’s immune system, making baby much happier and healthier. This touch can be from a loving and caring parent, sibling or any other person who is looking after the baby. Self-massage or massage is not just about touch; it is a way of showing love, caring, healing, and appreciation for yourself and your baby. When you massage your baby on a regular basis, you can relieve colic and gas. As a result, your baby’s digestion will improve and they will be a happier and healthier baby. Here are some quick tips. Massage your baby when they are quiet or well-rested; after a nap is a really good time. Another good idea is to get everything ready before you decide to give your baby a massage. Prepare a cozy surface, warm blanket, massage oil, and a diaper. Then make sure the room is warm enough that your baby is comfortable with minimum clothing on. Begin by asking permission from your baby to see if they are ready for a massage. This helps them learn about healthy touch. Please pay attention to how your baby reacts to your touch, pressure and when your baby would like you to stop. The most important thing about massaging your baby is that you both have fun and enjoy each other’s company!

Given the reality of time-crunched parents, those wellrounded, home-cooked meals aren’t always possible. That’s why pediatricians may recommend a daily multivitamin or mineral supplement for: • Kids who aren’t eating regular, well-balanced meals made from fresh, whole foods • Finicky eaters who simply aren’t eating enough

Vitamins for Kids: Do Healthy Kids Need Supplements? I take vitamins and minerals every day, but I also juice every morning so I’m sure I get all the vitamins and minerals I need. If you believe the ads, every kid needs a daily Flintstone or Gummy Bear vitamin. But is it true?

• Kids with chronic medical conditions such as asthma or digestive problems, especially if they’re taking medications (be sure to talk with your child’s doctor first before starting a supplement if your child is on medication) • Particularly active kids who play physically demanding sports • Kids eating a lot of fast foods, convenience foods, and processed foods

Not necessarily so, the experts agree. Ideally, kids should get their vitamins from a balanced, healthy diet that includes:

• Kids on a vegetarian diet (they may need an iron supplement), a dairy-free diet (they may need a calcium supplement), or other restricted diet

• Milk and dairy products like cheese and yogurt (preferably low-fat products for kids over age 3)

• Kids who drink a lot of carbonated sodas, which can leach vitamins and minerals from their bodies

• Plenty of fresh fruits and leafy, green vegetables

People go through a lot of physical changes — including growth and puberty — during their teenage years. Eating right during this time is especially important because the body needs a variety of vitamins and minerals to grow, develop, and stay healthy.

• Protein like chicken, fish, meat, and eggs • Whole grains like steel-cut oats and brown rice • Vitamins and minerals boost the immune system, support normal growth and development, and help cells and organs do their jobs. For example, you’ve probably heard that carrots are good for your eyes. It’s true! Carrots are full of substances called carotenoids that your body converts into vitamin A, which helps prevent eye problems.

Kids Section Little Boy’s Explanation of God It was written by an 8-year-old named Danny Dutton, who lives in Chula Vista, CA. He wrote it for his third grade homework assignment, to ‘explain God.’ I wonder if any of us could have done as well as he did? EXPLANATION OF GOD: ‘One of God’s main jobs is making people. He makes them to replace the ones that die, so there will be enough people to take care of things on earth. He doesn’t make grownups; just babies. I think because they are smaller and easier to make, that way He doesn’t have to take up His valuable time teaching them to talk and walk. He can just leave that to mothers and fathers. ‘God’s second most important job is listening to prayers. An awful lot of this goes on, since some people, like preachers and things, pray at times besides bedtime. God doesn’t have time to listen to the radio or TV because of this. Because He hears everything, there must be a terrible lot of noise in his ears, unless He has thought of a way to turn it off. ‘God sees everything and hears everything and is everywhere, which keeps Him pretty busy. So you shouldn’t go wasting His time by going over your mom and dad’s head asking for something they said you couldn’t have. ‘Atheists are people who don’t believe in God. I don’t think there are any in Chula Vista. At least there aren’t any who come to our church. ‘Jesus is God’s Son. He used to do all the hard work, like walking on water and performing miracles and trying to teach the people who didn’t want to learn about God. They finally got tired of him preaching to them and they crucified him. But he was good and kind, like his father, and he told his father that they didn’t know what they were doing and to forgive them and God said O.K. ‘His dad (God) appreciated everything that he had done and all his hard work on earth so he told him he didn’t have to go out on the road anymore. He could stay in heaven. So he

did and now he helps his dad out by listening to prayers and seeing things which are important for God to take care of and which ones he can take care of himself without having to bother God. Like a secretary, only more important. ‘You can pray anytime you want and they are sure to help you because they got it worked out so one of them is on duty all the time.’ ‘You should always go to church on Sunday because it makes God happy, and if there’s anybody you want to make happy, it’s God! ‘Don’t skip church to do something you think will be more fun like going to the beach. This is wrong. And besides, the sun doesn’t come out at the beach until noon anyway. ‘If you don’t believe in God, besides being an atheist, you will be very lonely, because your parents can’t go everywhere with you, like to camp, but God can. It is good to know He’s around you when you’re scared, in the dark or when you can’t swim and you get thrown into real deep water by big kids. ‘But...you shouldn’t just always think of what God can do for you. I figure God put me here and he can take me back anytime he pleases. And...that’s why I believe in God.’

Tomatoes, tomatoes and more tomatoes! I just don’t know why I plant all these tomatoes every year; I most definitely have long term memory loss and forget how many I had last year, swearing I would not make the same mistake again. Yeah, right! Here I am again with piles of tomatoes. I just know I’m not the only gardener with this problem; thank goodness one of our September themes is Entertaining!! I have scoped out the perfect recipes using tomatoes for you to use when planning your next dinner party.

BEAUTIFUL SIDE DISHES Crunchy baked tomato & onion gratin

Simplicity is key to this slowly-cooked vegetarian bake-and-serve with plenty of bread to mop up the juices. 3 onions, thinly sliced 3 garlic cloves, thinly sliced 4 tbsp olive oil 1.2 kg mixed tomatoes, from really big to cherry 8 thyme or oregano sprigs, or a mixture, stripped, plus a few more 1 tbsp sugar 50-85g fresh white breadcrumbs Heat oven to 350 degrees. Heat half the oil in a pan and gently soften the onions and garlic for 15-20 minutes until really soft and sticky but not browned. Put the onions, tomatoes (halve the large ones); herbs, sugar and breadcrumbs in a baking dish, season well and toss together. Drizzle with the remaining oil, scatter with a few more herb sprigs and bake for 1 hour, until going golden on top and the tomatoes are juicy. From Good Food Magazine

There aren’t many meals this won’t go well with; pasta, couscous, rice, and even barbeques! 250g bag spinach 4 slices prosciutto 3 large tomatoes, halved 1 heaped tbsp crème fraîche or sour cream 50g goat’s cheese (from a log with rind), chopped Heat oven to 350 degrees. Put the spinach in a colander, pour over a kettle of boiling water until the spinach wilts, then drain and squeeze out as much liquid as you can (you might need to do this in two batches). Put the spinach in the bottom of a gratin or baking dish, season, then sprinkle with nutmeg. Drape the prosciutto over and around the spinach, and then sit the tomato halves on top, cut-side up. Dot the crème fraîche or sour cream over the whole dish, scatter with the goat’s cheese, then season with more pepper. Bake for 10-15 minutes until the cheese is melting into the crème fraîche and the edges are starting to bubble. Scoop out of the dish and serve with crusty bread and a green salad. BEAUTIFUL MAIN DISHES Ham-and-Tomato Pie

We don’t suggest using deli ham due to the moisture content. Use a traditional 9-inch pie shell, not a deep-dish. There’s no need to thaw the crust before assembling. 1 (8-oz.) package diced cooked ham 1/2 cup sliced green onions (about 4 onions) 1 (9-inch) frozen unbaked pie shell 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 1 cup (4 oz.) shredded mozzarella cheese, divided www.thenewsyneighbour.com

2 medium plum tomatoes, thinly sliced 1 large egg 1/3 cup half-and-half 1 tablespoon chopped fresh basil 1/8 teaspoon pepper Garnishes: fresh basil sprigs, tomato slices Sauté ham and green onions in a large non-stick skillet over medium heat 5 minutes or until ham is brown and any liquid evaporates. Brush bottom of pie shell evenly with mustard; sprinkle with 1/2 cup mozzarella cheese. Spoon ham mixture evenly over cheese, and top with single layer of sliced tomatoes. Beat egg and half-and-half with a fork until blended; pour over tomatoes. Sprinkle evenly with basil, pepper, and remaining 1/2 cup cheese. Bake on lowest oven rack at 425° for 20 to 23 minutes or until lightly browned and set. Cool on a wire rack 20 minutes. Cut into wedges to serve; garnish, if desired. My Recipes.com

Tomato-Herb Pasta

Turn this zesty side dish into a hearty entrée by adding cooked shrimp or chicken. 1/2 cup rice vinegar 1 tablespoon sugar 1/2 medium-size red onion, thinly sliced 1/2 (12-oz.) package whole grain spaghetti 2 medium tomatoes, seeded and chopped 1 large cucumber, peeled and thinly sliced into half moons 4 green onions, thinly sliced 1/3 cup firmly packed fresh mint leaves, chopped 1/3 cup firmly packed fresh cilantro leaves, chopped 1/4 cup fresh lime juice 2 tablespoons canola oil www.thenewsyneighbour.com

1 teaspoon sugar 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon dried crushed red pepper 1/4 cup chopped peanuts Whisk together vinegar and 1 tbsp sugar in a bowl. Add onion, and let stand 30 minutes; drain, reserving 2 tbsp vinegar mixture. Prepare pasta according to package directions. Place chopped tomatoes and next 9 ingredients in a serving bowl. Add hot cooked pasta, onion, and reserved vinegar mixture, gently tossing to combine. Sprinkle with peanuts. Serve immediately, or cover and chill up to 24 hours. MyRecipes.com

FOR THE FINALE: TOMATO DESSERT! Tomato Cake

1 package yellow cake mix with pudding 4 eggs 1/4 cup oil 2 cups finely chopped fresh tomatoes, unpeeled 1/8 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon Combine all ingredients in bowl. Beat well. Grease 9x13 inch pan. Bake 40-45 minutes at 350°F. When cool, sprinkle with sifted confectioners’ sugar. Cdkitchen.com

Crafts for Grandparents It’s a scientific fact that Grandparents LOVE homemade things from their grandkids. That’s why we’ve put together this fun, DIY Grandparents Day craft for kids! What You’ll Need: - Thick White Paper (cut to 4×6 or 5×7 if you plan to frame) - White Crayon - Watercolour Paint - Paintbrush (preferably with a thicker tip) - Bowl of Water Step 1: Write a message for Grandma and Grandpa using a white crayon. If your child is younger, you may want to write the message for them. They are probably just super anxious to get to the painting part. If you have older kids, let them get creative! Page 22

Step 2: Choose your colours. We recommend giving a limited number of colours to work with so they can’t just mix them up and end up with brown. Cool colours like blue, green and yellow will work well together, as will warm colours like red, orange and pink. Step 3: Paint! This is the fun part. Give your little one the watercolour paint, a paintbrush, a bowl of water and the paper with the message on it, and let them get to work, filling the page with lots and lots of colour! Step 4: Let dry & pat your little artist on the back. Once the paint dries, all that’s left is the signature. You can have them sign on the front, just like an artist would, or write your child’s name and the date on the back, so Grandma and Grandpa can look back and smile one day! Ten Rules for Being Human by Cherie Carter-Scott 1. You will receive a body. You may like it or hate it, but it’s yours to keep for the entire period. 2. You will learn lessons. You are enrolled in a full-time informal school called, “life.” 3. There are no mistakes, only lessons. Growth is a process of trial, error, and experimentation. The “failed” experiments are as much a part of the process as the experiments that ultimately “work.” 4. Lessons are repeated until they are learned. A lesson will be presented to you in various forms until you have learned it. When you have learned it, you can go on to the next lesson. 5. Learning lessons does not end. There’s no part of life that doesn’t contain its lessons. If you’re alive, that means there are still lessons to be learned. 6. “There” is no better a place than “here.” When your “there” has become a “here”, you will simply obtain another “there” that will again look better than “here.” 7. Other people are merely mirrors of you. You cannot love or hate something about another person unless www.thenewsyneighbour.com

it reflects to you something you love or hate about yourself. 8. What you make of your life is up to you. You have all the tools and resources you need. What you do with them is up to you. The choice is yours. 9. Your answers lie within you. The answers to life’s questions lie within you. All you need to do is look, listen, and trust. 10. You will forget all this.

PETS Section The other problem with feeding vegetables to dogs is they may have problems digesting them. To make them more digestive system friendly, cook them by steaming in a steamer. Using the steam method will preserve more of the healthy nutrients and phytochemicals than most other cooking methods will. If your dog appears hesitant to eat the vegetables you place in his bowl, try pureeing them in a blender before adding them to his food bowl. Limit vegetables to no more than a quarter of your dog’s food intake a day and serve them along with a high quality source of protein. The best vegetables for dogs from the standpoint of health benefits would be the cruciferous ones such as broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts, although these are some of the most difficult to digest. Always serve these vegetables cooked to increase digestibility. You can also serve your dog cooked green beans, zucchini, and squash as well as green, leafy vegetables such as spinach. It’s best to add vegetables to your dog’s diet gradually since sudden dietary changes can precipitate stomach upset or diarrhea.

Vegetables are a rich source of vitamins, antioxidants, and fibre and if you’re a human you probably already know the importance of getting your nine servings of fruits and vegetables each day. But what about your canine best friend? What are the best vegetables for dogs? When you’re considering the best vegetables for your dog’s diet, it’s important to be aware of ones that are potentially harmful to dogs. Two that should be avoided are garlic and onions, since they’re known to cause anemia in dogs if consumed in high enough concentration. Other vegetables that can potentially have adverse effects on dogs include avocados, tomatoes, and wild mushrooms. Grapes and raisins can cause kidney damage for cats and dogs, so avoid feeding these entirely. Citrus fruits like lemons, limes, and grapefruit as well as persimmons can cause upset stomach. Ask The Veterinarian

Q: We are having a baby, how do I prepare my dogs and cats for the arrival of our new family member? A: It is important that prior to the baby, we start introducing the animals to the baby’s things (i.e., crib, change table, car seat, etc.) so that they are not foreign along with the baby when he or she arrives. Allow the animals to enter the baby’s room and sniff around. Any changes to the house will cause some anxiety to the pet, so gradually doing this over a few weeks will help. For cats, it would be advisable to place a Feliway diffuser in the room a few weeks prior to, and during this change, and for dogs use a DAP diffuser. These pheromones will help to settle the animals and keep them calm. It would also be a good idea to introduce the baby gate well before the arrival so that the dogs know that they are to be behind it regularly. They should be well accustomed to the gate by the time the baby is home.

AnimalCareCentre.ca

imals a well deserved greeting. After they have received lots of love and attention, the baby can come in. Allow the animals to sniff the baby, but keep him or her in safe range at first introduction. Most of the attention is going to go to the baby, so ensure to make time for the animals, and keep their routines consistent. If you have a pet that has severe anxiety, or aggressive behaviour, it is best to discuss this with a Veterinarian or Behaviourist long before the baby is due. We need to get these behaviours in order so that there is less stress within the household at the time of the new addition. Lastly, remember to never leave your baby unattended in the presence of an animal, no matter how nice they may be; after all, a pet is still an animal - be responsible! Dr. Jodi Viste

We want to keep cats out of the crib, so always ensure the cats are out of the baby’s sleeping quarters when the baby is sleeping. A mesh tent is a good idea to help avoid animals climbing into the crib. Men, Vehicles & Sports Time for CFL to change the playoff format!

Mark Stephen and I had a great discussion on Sportstalk on Newstalk 770! As the CFL prepares to expand to 9 teams next season with the addition of the expansion Ottawa REDBLACKS, is it not time for this league to abolish the East/West divisions? At least let’s open the discussion! One division, 9 teams and each team basically plays a balanced schedule. A home and away game against each other and the final two games are set up to promote geographical rivalries. The playoff format is debatable but also simple. Choose one of the options we suggested on the show. Option # 1 – The top 6 teams make the playoffs with the top two seeds getting a bye in the semifinal week. 3 plays 6 and 4 plays 5 and depending on the outcome you re-seed after the first round. This option is likely the easiest and least contentious. Option # 2 – The top 7 teams make the playoffs and only the number one team overall gets a first round bye. In the first round of the playoffs 2 plays 7, 3 plays 6 and 4 plays 5. For the second round you re-seed with the top two records hosting. Personally, I love this format as it truly rewards the best team in the league with a first round bye. The only negative with this option is the fact that 7 teams make the playoffs in a 9 team league. The CFL already has a bad reputation for allowing too many teams into the tournament. If you are a believer of this, then let’s debate a third option. Option # 3 – Only the top 5 teams make the post season. The first round of the playoffs will feature a wild card playoff with the 4th best record hosting the 5th best record. The top three teams all receive a first round bye. The wildcard winner moves in the final 4 playing the number seed while 2 hosts 3. I realize the third place team may have an issue with not hosting a home playoff game, but it’s not like the teams will lose Page 28

The Newsy Neighbour

a lot of revenue as the league controls the playoff dates. It would be up to the league to create a revenue sharing program so all 5 playoff teams can benefit. “I know there would be some pushback,” says TSN analyst Glen Suitor, “but I agree it is time to open the discussion.” While some of the traditionalist will not like the fact that these formats could eliminate an East/West Grey Cup Championship game. That possibility is already in play under the current format, with the cross over! The problem that we have seen over the last few years in the Canadian Football League is discrepancy between the top teams and the bottom feeders. Is it really fair that a team with an inferior record have an easier road to the championship game? One suggestion that I could live with is that the league sticks with the East/West divisions. The team with the best record in each division would be given a first round bye. The final 4 playoff spots would be seeded according to their records and it would not matter which division they played in. The final four would be re-seeded according to record. The last time the CFL changed its playoff format was 1995. Unfortunately, that was a disaster as the league was experimenting with the expansion into the United States. The five American teams were in the newly named South division while the Canadian teams played in their own division. The American teams are long gone and now it’s time to put all the remaining teams back in one single division. On Sainsbury’s peanuts -- “Warning: contains nuts.” (Talk about a news flash!) On an American Airlines packet of nuts -- “Instructions: Open packet, eat nuts.” (Step 3: maybe, uh...fly Delta?) On a child’s Superman costume -- “Wearing of this garment does not enable you to fly.” (I don’t blame the company; I blame the parents for this one.) On a Swedish chainsaw -- “Do not attempt to stop chain with your hands or genitals.” (Ouch! My goodness...was there a lot of this happening somewhere?)

On Marks & Spencer Bread Pudding -- “Product will be hot after heating.” (...and you thought????....)

MOBILE MOTORCYCLE TRAINING SCHOOL

On packaging for a Rowenta iron -- “Do not iron clothes on body.” (But wouldn’t this save me more time?)

BEGINNER & REFRESHER COURSES AVAILABLE

On Boot’s Children Cough Medicine -- “Do not drive a car or operate machinery after taking this medication.” (We could do a lot to reduce the rate of construction accidents if we could just get those 5-year-olds with head-colds off those forklifts.) On Nytol Sleep Aid -- “Warning: May cause drowsiness...” (And I’m taking this because?) www.thenewsyneighbour.com

This Guy Knows Math I was riding to work yesterday when I observed a female driver who cut right in front of a pickup truck, causing the driver to drive onto the shoulder to avoid hitting her. This evidently angered the driver enough that he hung his arm out is window and gave the woman the finger. Man, that guy is stupid, I thought to myself. I ALWAYS smile nicely and wave in a sheepish manner whenever a female does anything to me in traffic, and here’s why: I drive 48 miles each way every day to work. That’s 96 miles each day. Of these, 16 miles each way is bumper-to-bumper. Most of the bumper-to-bumper is on an 8 lane highway. There are 7 cars every 40 feet for 32 miles. That works out to 982 cars every mile, or 31,424 cars. Even though the rest of the 32 miles is not bumper-tobumper, I figure I pass at least another 4000 cars. That brings the number to something like 36,000 cars that I pass every day.

Statistically, females drive half of these. That’s 18,000 women drivers! In any given group of females, 1 in 28 has PMS. That’s 642. According to Cosmopolitan, 70% describe their love life as dissatisfying or unrewarding. That’s 449. According to the National Institute of Health, 22% of all females have seriously considered suicide or homicide. That’s 98. And 34% describe men as their biggest problem. That’s 33. According to the National Rifle Association, 5% of all females carry weapons and this number is increasing. That means that EVERY SINGLE DAY, I drive past at least one female that has a lousy love life, thinks men are her biggest problem, has seriously considered suicide or homicide, has PMS, and is armed. Give her the finger? I don’t think so...

Four married guys go golfing.

Luggage

At the 4th hole, the following conversation took place: First Guy: “You have no idea what I had to do to be able to come out golfing this weekend. I had to promise my wife that I will paint every room in the house next weekend.” Second Guy: “That’s nothing! I had to promise my wife that I will build her a new deck for the pool.” Third Guy: “Man, you both have it easy! I had to promise my wife that I will remodel the kitchen for her.”

Fourth Guy: “I just set my alarm for 5:30 a.m. When it went off, I shut off my alarm, gave the wife a nudge and said, ‘Golf Course or Intercourse?’ and she said, ‘Wear your sweater.’” www.thenewsyneighbour.com

They continue to play the hole when they realized that the fourth guy had not said a word. So they asked him, “You haven’t said anything about what you had to do to be able to come golfing this weekend. What’s the deal?”

After his return from Rome, Will couldn’t find his luggage in the airport baggage area. He went to the lost luggage office and told the woman there that his bags hadn’t shown up of the carousel. She smiled and told him not to worry because they were trained professionals and he was in good hands. Then she asked Will, “Has your plane arrived yet?”

Whether you have raised one child or six children, you know what I am talking about when I say, “Children don’t come with an instruction manual!” And even if you try to raise them all the same way, they all turn out different! All we want is what is the very best for our kids: to lead happy, healthy, and productive lives. We want our kids to live up to their potential and to grow up to be decent human beings. This isn’t always easy, and guaranteed we will all have bumps and bruises along the way, even when your children no longer live at home. As parents, we want to guide our kids to the Promised Land and shield them from dangers lurking around the bend. Unfortunately, sometimes our well-intentioned actions set us on a collision course with our kids. We “coach” our kids not to make the same mistakes that we’ve made; we scrutinize our kids’ activities to ensure that they’re trying their best, and of course, we flip out when they really step out of bounds. Some people may say we’re meddling; others call it hovering; our kids would probably say we’re driving them crazy. The truth is, even though everything we do is out of our love for them, we can be our kids’ worst nightmare. Although we aim to do our best, we aren’t perfect. So please try to understand: as your parents, it’s our goal to never have a second agenda, an ulterior motive, or expect to be paid back — all we want is what’s best for you. Please try to listen to us every once in a while — we may still know a thing or two about life, and we desperately want to share it with you. We may not have all the answers, but I’m sure we can figure it out together. And since we’ve made our share of mistakes in life, learn from our missteps. Why run into the wall and get hurt when we’ve already “been there, done that”? And, if we’re pushing you to live up to your potential or to be a better person, why put up a fight? Would you rather have parents who don’t care?

We know that we get on your nerves sometimes. We know that it’s your life to live. But we wouldn’t be doing our “job” if we didn’t get under your skin every once in a while. That’s what parents do. One thing we can promise: we will ALWAYS be in your corner rooting for you. We will ALWAYS put your needs before our own. And we will ALWAYS be there to pick up the pieces if things head south. Remember, no one will ever love you more than we do. Being a parent is a tough job. We’re not complaining. We wouldn’t have it any other way. We are so blessed and honoured to be your parents. But unfortunately, parents aren’t issued an instruction manual. By the time we really figure out this parenting thing, you’ll be all grown up having children of your own… and then it’s your turn. - Kathryn Hartwell Now, when that day comes, which it will if it hasn’t already, read this very helpful information I found on About.com.

How to Handle Unresolved Conflict in Your Family While family relationships can bring support, joy, and other wonderful benefits into our lives, these relationships can also bring stress, particularly when there's unresolved conflict. It’s more difficult to let go of conflicted relationships with family than it would be if these relationships were mere friendships. Without an apology or other form of resolution, the trust on both sides is compromised, and you may not know what to expect from this person in the future. Once a conflict has gone on awhile, even if both parties move on and remain polite, the feelings of pain and mistrust are usually lingering under the surface, and are difficult to resolve. Conflict in a relationship is virtually inevitable. In itself, conflict isn’t a problem; how it’s handled, however, can bring people together or tear them apart. Poor communication skills, disagreements and misunderstandings can be a source of anger and distance, or a springboard to a stronger relationship and happier future. Next time you’re dealing with conflict, keep these tips on effective

communication skills in mind and you can create a more positive outcome.

Improve Your Relationships with Effective Communication Skills 1. Stay Focused: Sometimes it’s tempting to bring up past seemingly related conflicts when dealing with current ones. Unfortunately, this often clouds the issue and makes finding mutual understanding and a solution to the current issue less likely, and makes the whole discussion more taxing and even confusing. Try not to bring up past hurts or other topics. Stay focused on the present, your feelings, understanding one another and finding a solution. 2. Listen Carefully: People often think they’re listening, but are really thinking about what they’re going to say next when the other person stops talking. Truly effective communication goes both ways. While it might be difficult, try really listening to what your partner is saying. Don’t interrupt. Don’t get defensive. Just hear them and reflect back what they’re saying so they know you’ve heard. Then you’ll understand them better and they’ll be more willing to listen to you. 3. Try To See Their Point of View: In a conflict, most of us primarily want to feel heard and understood. We talk a lot about our point of view to get the other person to see things our way. Ironically, if we all do this all the time, there’s little focus on the other person’s point of view, and nobody feels understood. Try to really see the other side, and then you can better explain yours. (If you don't 'get it', ask more questions until you do.) Others will more likely be willing to listen if they feel heard. 4. Respond to Criticism with Empathy: When someone comes at you with criticism, it’s easy to feel that they’re wrong, and get defensive. While criticism is hard to hear, and often exaggerated or coloured by the other person’s emotions, it’s important to listen for the other person’s pain and respond with empathy for their feelings. Also, look for what’s true in what they’re saying; that can be valuable information for you. 5. Own What’s Yours: Realize that personal responsibility is strength, not a weakness. Effective communication involves admitting when you’re wrong. If you share some responsibility in a conflict (which is usually the case), look for and admit to what’s yours. It diffuses the situation, sets a good example, and shows maturity. It also often inspires the other person to respond in kind, leading you both closer to mutual understanding and a solution. 6. Use “I” Messages: Rather than saying things like, “You really messed up here,” begin statements with “I”, and make them about yourself and your feelings, like, “I feel frustrated when this happens.” It’s less accusatory, sparks less defen-

siveness, and helps the other person understand your point of view rather than feeling attacked. 7. Look for Compromise: Instead of trying to ‘win’ the argument, look for solutions that meet everybody’s needs. Either through compromise or a new solution that gives you both what you want most, this focus is much more effective than one person getting what they want at the other’s expense. Healthy communication involves finding a resolution that both sides can be happy with. 8. Take a Time-Out: Sometimes tempers get heated and it’s just too difficult to continue a discussion without it becoming an argument or a fight. If you feel yourself or your partner starting to get too angry to be constructive or showing some destructive communication patterns, its okay to take a break from the discussion until you both cool off. Sometimes good communication means knowing when to take a break. 9. Don’t Give Up: While taking a break from the discussion is sometimes a good idea, always come back to it. If you both approach the situation with a constructive attitude, mutual respect, and a willingness to see the other’s point of view or at least find a solution, you can make progress toward the goal of a resolution to the conflict. Unless it’s time to give up on the relationship, don’t give up on communication. 10. Ask For Help If You Need It: If one or both of you has trouble staying respectful during conflict, or if you’ve tried resolving conflict with your partner on your own and the situation just doesn’t seem to be improving, you might benefit from a few sessions with a therapist. Couples counseling or family therapy can provide help with altercations and teach skills to resolve future conflict. If your partner doesn’t want to go, you can still often benefit from going alone. #11 - 55 Wheatland Trail, Strathmore MY FAVOURITE – FABULOUS – FANTASTIC AND FUN STUFF Do you want to know your future? Oh come on now, I know you do! I have always been interested in thoughts and beliefs which are a little out of the ordinary, like Tarot Cards, Numerology, I Ching, Astrology, Destiny Cards, Zodiac Signs and Palmistry; don’t they sound mystical and fabulously mysterious? Palmistry has been around for thousands of years, and it’s still popular today. No matter where you came from, everyone is at least a little bit curious about what their hands might tell them. Obviously, the best way to create a future you’re happy with is to take consistent, positive action every day. But if you want to dabble on the metaphysical side of things, it can be really fun to read your palm! It’s old-fashioned, I know, but I believe everyone should have a party trick. Palmistry is quite easy to learn, and like with any other form of fortune-telling, you get better at it the more you do it.

Which palm should you read? Well, ideally, you should read both. The theory is that the left hand shows potential, while the right hand shows what you’ve done with that potential. Some palm readers believe that “the left is what the gods give you; the right is what you do with it”. There are four major types of hands, which relate to the elements. Your astrological sign might be an Earth sign, for example, but your hand might not be! Here’s how they break down… Earth hands are wide, with square palms and fingers, thick or rough skin, and ruddy in appearance. The length of the palm is usually equal to the length of the fingers. People with Earth hands are usually very practical and levelheaded. They’d rather get out into the world and do something rather than learn about it. They can be quite conservative, and prefer to be outdoors. If you have Earth hands, cabin fever is real! Air hands feature square or rectangular palms with long fingers. They often have protruding knuckles, low thumbs, or dry skin. The length of the palm is usually equal to the length of the fingers. Air types are very intellectual, always curious and full of ideas. They practically hum with nervous energy, and can be prone to worry and stress. People with Air hands are great communicators, but they can internalise their feelings too much. This can lead to difficulties within their close relationships. Water hands are based on a short, sometimes oval palm, with long, flexible fingers. Their palm is usually wider than it is long, with fingers equal to the height of the palm. People with Water hands are very emotional. They are always looking for peace, and are extremely artistic. It can be hard for Water hands to deal with stress, and they are mostly motivated by feelings. Fire hands have a square or rectangular palm, flushed or pink skin, and shorter fingers. The length of the palm is usually greater than the length of the fingers. Fire hand types are energetic and always on the go. They need variety, and can be a little impatient and intolerant! People

Lines The heart line is about any and all matters concerning love. If your heart line starts under your index finger, you have a satisfying love life. If it starts beneath your middle finger, you are selfish in love. If it starts somewhere in between your first finger and your middle finger, you fall in love easily! A short heart line denotes little interest in romance. You’d rather do other things! If your heart line touches your life line, it means your heart breaks easily. A long, curvy heart line means you express your feelings with ease and tact. A straight heart line which runs parallel to your life line means you are exceptionally practical in matters of love. A wavy heart line means you will have many lovers, few of them serious! If there’s a circle on your heart line, it signifies sadness or depression. A broken heart line, or small lines crossing your heart line, shows emotional trauma of some kind. The head line shows your intellect or wisdom. In general, a curvy line denotes creativity and spontaneity, while a straight line favours practicality and structure. A short head line means you prefer physical accomplishments over intellectual ones; you’d rather go hiking than write an essay. A wavy line shows that you have a short attention span, while a deep, long line is evidence of a clear, focussed thinker. A straight head line means you are a realist. If your head line is separated from your life line, it means you have a lust for life and an unquenchable thirst for adventure! If there is a circle or cross in your head line, this denotes an emotional crisis of some kind. Multiple crosses show that you have to make a lot of very big decisions in your lifetime. The life line is the line of destiny. It shows your character, as well as any important events that will happen in your life. And don’t worry: contrary to popular belief, the length of the line doesn’t show when you’re going to die! If your life line is very close to your thumb, it means you have low energy and are often tired. Conversely, a wide, curvy life line shows that you have plenty of energy. If it swoops in a semi-circle, you are strong and enthusiastic. If it’s straight and stays close to the edge of your palm, you are cautious in your relationships. A long, deep life line shows your inner vitality, while a short and shallow life line means you are easily manipulated by others. If there’s a circle in your life line, it shows that you will be hospitalised or injured. A break in the line shows major changes in lifestyle. The fate line can be read in conjunction with the life line to show the future. By the way, not everyone has a fate line, so don’t feel bad if yours is nowhere to be seen! www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Once you have decided to change or set a goal, you have to decide if it is realistic or attainable. Don’t underestimate yourself! Busy schedules, commitments, lack of will power, and lack of motivation are all obstacles that may prevent you from reaching the finish line. How do you plan on sticking to the goal? Here is a simple step by step list that will help you get to your final goal before you know it. Step One: Tell everyone about your goal. Own it! Set small daily and weekly goals. Step Two: Write it down. Start a journal. Recording your food, how you feel, and workouts help you track your progress. Step Three: Make a plan. Planning meals and workouts make it easier to stay on track. Step Four: Schedule for success. Making time for work outs, food preparation and rest. Proper sleep and diet is extremely important for repairing muscles and helping burn fat. Step Five: Get a work out buddy, hire a trainer or coach, or sign up for a challenge. You are less likely to miss a workout when you have a friend or coach waiting on you. These five steps are very simple, but very effective when followed. Alberta Health Services EMS would like to remind parents and caregivers of children of precautions they can take to prevent childhood poisonings. Ingesting medications, prescription or over-thecounter, is the leading cause of accidental poisoning in children. Even small amounts of adult medications can be seriously harmful or even fatal to your child if swallowed. Other causes of poisoning are household products, such as dishwasher tablets, and personal care items, such as mouthwash or nail polish. Medication storage Store all medications in a locked container and place in an area inaccessible to children. Keep medications in their original child-resistant packaging. Do not mix multiple medications inside one bottle. Install child locks on all cabinets or drawers where medications are stored.

Store household products, car supplies, and cosmetics in locked cupboards or drawers. Apply child safety latches to drawers and cabinets if they are within a child’s reach. Know all plants in and around your home and garden. Antifreeze, windshield washer fluid, and pesticides are extremely poisonous. Even small amounts of these can cause serious illness when ingested. Poisoning information can be obtained by calling the Poison and Drug Information Service (PADIS)at:1-800332-1414. In case of a poisoning emergency, call 9-11. Angels on High Hits its Height Submitted by Rev. John Nemanic

On August 12 2013, 12 brave souls climbed Mt. Temple, the second highest mountain in Banff National Park at 3,544m (11,627ft) and became Angels on High. Angels on High is a mountain climbing adventure to fundraise toward a church building for St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish in Chestermere. St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish was officially formed in 2007. The parish has 2,200 registered people, 3 weekend Masses, and 21 groups and ministries. While St. Gabriel’s supports the spiritual needs of its congregation, it seeks to aid in the well-being of the wider community. It has supported many local groups such as the Chestermere Food Bank, Chestermere Health Care Services, Chestermere Recreation Centre, Chestermere Winterfest and Waterfest, Christmas with Dignity, Feed the Hungry, and the Youth Encouraging Lasting Leadership group, along with national and international charities. Angels on High began with a sold-out fundraising dinner on June 7, 2013 held at the St. Gabriel School gymnasium, where the parish community currently worships. With the help of corporate sponsors, Angels on High has raised over $45,000 and the 12 climbers themselves have raised over $16,000 in pledges. In preparation for Mt. Temple, the climbers trained at Mt. Yamnuska, Prairie View, and Mt. Bourgeau. They also spent a few grueling evenings at the Prince’s Island stairs getting their legs and lungs ready for the elevation gain on Mt. Temple. Fr. John Nemanic, pastor of St Gabriel Parish and a climber, supported Angels on High as a creative way to begin the monumental task of building a church. Fr. John says: “In as much as a home is always more than a house, a house is critical to a loving home. I see the future St. Gabriel church in the same way. The church building helps us become Page Page 38 38

The The Newsy Newsy Neighbour Neighbour

the church where we can encounter, praise, and serve Jesus in the world. What is great about Angels on High is that it was an innovative project, brought our parish community together, and encouraged personal growth.” Ted Laing, one of the climbers and a parishioner at St. Gabriel’s, says that Angels on High inspired him to be part of building a Catholic church in Chestermere. “When Fr. John first floated this idea of Angels on High at church,” Ted notes, “I was excited because he was putting actions behind his vision for a new church and a new meeting place for us and for our community with the slogan, ‘Climb, Celebrate, Create’. I thought, ‘We need to back this guy.’ When I started training I kept thinking of the ‘3 C’s’ that he embodies, ‘Christ, Courage and Commitment’. What better motivation for climbing Mount Temple?” Johanne Hachez, another climber and parishioner, says about her experience: “Angels on High was an unforgettable adventure. Not only did I get to hang out in the mountains, my favourite place, but I got to participate in an exciting fundraiser for our future Catholic Church. Along this journey I got to know some amazing individuals, see some pretty spectacular scenery and experience a thunderstorm way too close for comfort. The entire experience has refreshed and revived my faith. I can’t wait for the second annual Angels on High adventure.” As an organizer, Sarah Papke was proud to see the climbers become Angels on High: “Kevin (her husband) and I are so thankful to be a part of these people’s lives. We love our community and especially our church community. One day we will have a Catholic Church building in Chestermere to worship, gather and grow in faith. This is just the beginning.” Kevin Papke adds, “It’s not a church we are building; it’s a community.” MLA for Chestermere-Rocky View Bruce McAllister offered his congratulations to the climbers: “You are doing our community proud! I can’t think of a more worthy cause than the one you are pursuing. I encourage anybody to make a donation to enhance our community.” Please join St Gabriel’s Parish as it concludes Angels on High 2013 with wrap-up parties following the parish’s weekend Masses on Saturday, September 7 (5PM) & Sunday, September 8 (9AM and 10:30AM). For directions to St Gabriel’s school and other parish information please visit www.saintgabrielparish.ca. Everyone is welcome! Angels on High 2013 is only the start. St. Gabriel Parish’s goal is to build the church by 2018 enabling the parish community to worship and serve so others can reach even greater heights. Anyone wishing to support Angels on High can visit www.angelsonhigh.ca, on Facebook by searching ‘Angels on High’, or by calling (403) 455-0196. The 12 Angels on High were: Fr. Cristino Bouvette, Mike Doucette, Johanne Hachez, Philip Holy, Ryan Jefferies, Ted Laing, Jeff Morris, Fr. John Nemanic, Kevin Papke, Marcel Seguin, Patrick Watson, and Owen Wourms.

Back to….

Autumn is a second spring, when every leaf is a flower and they all need raking. To mis-quote from, and apologies to Albert Camus. September; the nights are getting longer, but there is a fading scent of summer as nature puts on her annual fall display. It’s back to work, clubs, activities and yard cleanup for winter. The problem is we love the warm fall days but have to adapt to the longer nights. Adapting means ensuring we maximize the value of our sleep time while coping with a busier schedule. Everybody has occasional sleep problems or a couple of bad nights. Prolonged sleep problems are a serious health & safety issue. Everything from diabetes to chronic pain, reduced immune system response and greatly increased chances of accidental injury all can be linked to lack of sleep. The ability to focus and learn along with the handling of everyday problems is supported by healthful sleep. Credible and peer-reviewed studies have consistently determined serious health issues can occur from a lack of proper sleep. How much sleep? 7 to 8 hours a night of proper sleep (not drug assisted) is recommended. FYI: 4 hours comatose is not the Page 40

The Newsy Neighbour

same as a good 8 hours. What if you’re getting a reasonable sleep time and are still waking up frequently during the night or tired in the morning? Stiff or sore muscles that ‘loosen up’ as the morning goes on? Neck pain? Takes a long time to get to sleep? 15 minutes to fall asleep seems to be a suggested time frame – too quick means too tired and too long can be other issues.

There are many causes for continuing poor sleep, stiffness and sore points. Some are medical in origin and it is important to consult a medical professional about these concerns. If there is no medical condition found, the solution may lay elsewhere. High on the suspect list is that place you spend up to a third of your life: your mattress. Quality mattress construction must evenly support the body (especially the spine), not allow pressure points to develop and maintain this quality over the life span of the mattress (about 10 years tops). These qualities assist us in maintaining normal sleep cycles while reducing the tendency to move about to relieve pressure points. Other areas such as the mattress cover (ticking) material can have an effect, although fancy colours or designs seem kind of pointless for something you cover all the time. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

www.newspaceconstruction.com Residential Contracting, Interior & Exterior Renovations, ROOFING Brett Presley 403-888-9931 What many don’t realize is that supported sleep affects both young and old. It is common to hear that well meaning and responsible parents will purchase a lower quality mattress for their children – thinking that they will grow out of it fairly quickly. This does not mean that you must spend the whole budget on a youth mattress, but now is the time to look for quality. A well constructed supportive mattress is important for your child’s development. The mattress system will continue back and body support as they grow and assist in achieving a deeper, more rejuvenating sleep. A quality mattress of an appropriate size will also last longer – price beating guarantees may be less important than a healthy youngster. Sleep is a huge industry. Manufacturers are very conscious of the mattress and bedding sector with substantial marketing effort going into it. Some is unadulterated hype and some is the product of actual credible research and product quality. It’s very difficult to assess the quality of a medium or even expensive mattress set by simply looking or even laying down on it. The mattress world is one of those where while you do get what you pay for, price is not a guarantee of quality and long term service.

mattress qualities and designs that will actually work for you and your family. As always, there are four sides to every story; one side, the other side, the political/media side and the truth. It’s a big world out there; stay sharp and informed. Your HOME, Your YARD & Real Estate Jane Sexton is a certified Classical Feng Shui Practitioner of 10 years. Formerly an Accountant and Business Analyst, Jane applies a logical analytical eye to the Metaphysical Sciences. She also studies the I Ching and Bazi as an extension of her Feng Shui so that individuals may learn of their personal destiny. Comments, questions and consultations can be discussed at jsfengshui@shaw.ca or 403-891-9211.

Simple Feng Shui So you’re trying to sell you place and it’s going a little slow? Well, if you’ve done everything your realtor says, like decluttering, improving your décor, and staged it like a showhome and it’s still not selling, you may want to try these ancient Chinese Feng Shui secrets: 1) Make sure you emotionally let your house go. If you are holding on to it emotionally, buyers will sense that this is not the house for them. 2) Write a letter to the gods. Get a red envelope and write a letter; address it to “whoever needs to buy your house”, and write that you are happy to sell to them and are hopeful they can show soon and you are thankful. Add a piece of wood from your yard and wrap it all in your red envelope and then throw it in a fast flowing river. Try to use biodegradable paper and don’t throw it in a lake. It must be a fast flowing body of water. 3) If your house is on the market due to a negative event such as a divorce, bankruptcy or death, have it

energetically cleared. You can do this yourself or hire a Feng Shui practitioner. To cleanse it yourself: get an orange and a bowl of water. Eat the orange and break the peel into small pieces. Mix the orange peel into the water bowl. If you can, open all the windows in your home. Go to the front yard, dip your hand in the mixture and sprinkle into the air. Ask for the house to be blessed and cleansed. Walk to the sides and back and repeat. Enter your house through the main door, sprinkle some water there. Then go to every room and sprinkle the air. Sprinkle a little more in the most negatively affected areas. Go back to the front and bury the rest of the mixture into the ground somewhere. Say thanks. Give Feng Shui try. It can only help! When you buy from a small business, you are not helping a CEO buy a third vacation home. You are helping a little girl get dance lessons, a little boy get his team jersey, a mom put food on the table, a dad pay the mortgage, or a student pay for college. Your HOME, Your YARD & Real Estate Garden Party I have always wanted to throw a garden party! And for some reason, I never have! That’s all going to change; I vow, before the last of the summer breeze is gone, I’m going to do this. HOW TO THROW YOUR OWN GARDEN PARTY The theme: A simple idea, like slipping into a gorgeous hat or fashion your party theme around sports, luau, fiesta, western, Hollywood, casino, Rock ‘n Roll, disco, and Mardi Gras are just a few ideas – use your imagination. Sip a glass of lavender lemonade, a glass of wine or a selection of imported beer. The look: Once you’ve chosen a set-

ting—on the lawn, by the pool, under your favourite tree—think about how to serve. A buffet is easiest. For a sit-down meal, get guests to mingle by placing starters, drinks, desserts, and gifts at separate tables where everyone helps themselves. Don’t forget umbrellas or canopies for shade. At night, string lights in trees, float candles in bowls of water, hang paper lanterns. A colour can hold it all together. Pick one or two colours you love—hot pink, say, or blue and white— and add a touch of it to everything from invitations and table settings to parting gifts.

The invitations: Make a guest list of

friends you want to see and one or two people you’d like to meet. Choose paper to match your theme – design and print them using your computer. You might want to attach a little gift to the invitation - a flower-seed packet or pretty garden gloves.

Table: Casual tablecloths and napkins

of butcher paper (for windy days, secure with tablecloth clips from any party store). Place settings: Think texture and contrast. Mismatched vintage floral china; one strong colour like cobalt blue on a red-checked cloth; crystal plates and goblets and silver on a white cloth or colourful plastic plates from the dollar store.

Centerpiece: Give an outdoor table personality—small crystal glasses filled with fresh mint at each place setting; candles small lamps, figurines even books – use your imagination. What to serve: Whether you grill on the deck or cook indoors, plan your meal around Home & Real Estate

fresh, seasonal ingredients. Think of finger food that’s fun to eat: shrimp on a skewer, grilled pizzas, lobster. Or design a themed meal: a Tuscan feast or classic picnic with spicy fried chicken and peanut coleslaw. If your guests are dressing up, serve a fancy seafood luncheon. Creating the illusion of space can also be done with colour – high contrast colour palettes work well, contrary to popular belief that a strong colour shrinks the look of the space. Again, thoughtful placement and balance is key; painting a darker colour on the furthest wall while flanked with a neutral can actually seem as if the space is receding, tricking the eye and overall perception of the space. A large mirror will bounce the natural light around, and the reflection will draw you in, alluding to depth and a wider amount of square footage. Last but not least – inject your personality!! Styling the space, adding in texture and visual interest with fabrics, pillows, and décor (keeping scale in mind) will be the finishing touch to your multifunction yet always stylish small space. Small Space Solutions

TO CLEAN & PROTECT

Whether you live in a condo or townhome that’s a little short of space, or have an awkward nook with no apparent use – there are some tips and tricks to optimize these spaces for ultimate functionality, style and flow. Functionality and flow are key; smart design is not just selecting sustainable finishes and décor but it is also creating and choosing multi-purpose furniture and storage solutions. Keeping things neat, tidy and organized is paramount in a tight space. Hiding things away in armoires, under bed storage and up off of the floor on floating shelvesnothing too heavy that will overwhelm the space. Thoughtful and careful placement of these pieces will promote flow. Delineating a smaller space which is more of an open concept layout can be done simply with lighting and an area rug. Apartments and Condos are often limited when it comes to good lighting; floor lamps and ceiling pendants create “zones,” and not to mention some added character. Area rugs anchor a space, and can be quite a statement www.thenewsyneighbour.com

War Brides’ Comes to Chestermere

– Jen Peddlesden, Chestermere Historical Foundation

It’s 1947; young women, many with children in tow, are boarding ships in England, heading for Canada to join the men they met or married during World War II. The stories these women and their families have to share are both fascinating, poignant and in some cases either very sad or with the proverbial happy ending. Local Chestermere residents Richard Drake and Steve King speak fondly of their mother and aunt, Rita Drake (nee King), who was one of those women. Her story was a happy one! Rita is still alive and well, living in Newfoundland. Her story of coming to a new land, and making a new life mirrors many of those which will be told by the Aspen Crossing players at ‘War Brides’ presented in Chestermere on Saturday November 2nd at a special event dessert theatre production. Tickets are available from Audrey 403-272-9280, Jen 403-2723764, at the Town of Chestermere Library. $35 per person includes play and dessert and there will be a cash bar. Doors open/cash bar 5:30pm and play at 7pm. Details are also available at www.chestermerehistory.org Page 48

Clever Kids

Cowboy Funeral

A police man was pulled over behind an overpass watching for speeding motorists. One day, the office was amazed when everyone was under the speed limit, so he investigated and found the problem. A 10 year old boy was standing on the side of the road with a huge hand painted sign which said, “Radar Trap Ahead.” A little more investigation work lead the office to the boys accomplice: another boy about 100 yards beyond the radar trap with a sign reading “TIPS” and a bucket at his feet full of change.

The old cowboy had died. A funeral was in progress and the country preacher talked at length of the good traits of the deceased; what an honest man he was, and what a loving husband and kind father he was. Finally, the widow leaned over and whispered to one of her children, “Go up there and take a look in the coffin and see if that’s your pa.”

Hat A man loses his hat, so he goes to church to steal one off of the hat rack. When he gets there, the priest was giving his sermon on the Ten Commandments. Something in the sermon gives the man a flash of insight and, after mass, the man goes to confession to tell the priest what he was going to do... Man: Forgive me father, for I have sinned. Father: Go ahead, son. Man: I lost my hat and I came to church today to steal a hat off of the rack. Father: Is that so? Man: But then I heard you talking about the Ten Commandments - and I changed my mind. Father: Really? My son, did you make this decision when I was discussing the commandment: “Thou shalt not steal?” Man: No. It was when you started talking about, “Thou shalt not commit adultery” that I remembered where my hat was!

Bartender A nun, a priest, an Irishman, a Scotsman, a rabbi and a blonde walk into a bar. The bartender looks at them and asks, “Is this some kind of joke?”

Having one child makes you a parent; having two you are a referee . Marriage is a relationship in which one person is always right and the other is the husband! Laziness is nothing more than the habit of resting before you get tired . There is only one perfect child in the world and every mother has it.
