A panda walks into a bar A panda walks into a bar, sits down and orders a sandwich. He eats the sandwich, pulls out a gun and shoots the bartender in the foot. As the panda stands up to go, the manager shouts, “Hey! You just shot my bartender and you didn’t pay for your sandwich! Who do you think you are?!?” The panda yells back at the manager, “Hey man, I’m a PANDA! Look it up!” The manager rushes to his dictionary... “pan*da n. It all started with a camping trip between a couple of college buddies. The year was 1999 and two friends - Dale Wishewan of Sherwood Park, Alberta and Jon Amack of Portland, Oregon were camping along the Oregon Coast. “Are there any juice bars in Canada?” Jon asked. The rest would be history. Immediately upon Dale’s return to Canada he went into full exploration of whether the concept would work. It didn’t take him long to recognize that the concept would work based on his own lifestyle and knowing that others would want the same things. After a couple of months of planning, Dale’s garage and basement became packed with blenders, fruit, and all the equipment that would later form the first Booster Juice location. Friends and neighbours became a testing ground for creation after creation of smoothie concoctions. After five months of 18 hour days of research and development, Dale had a clear vision of what Booster Juice would become. What emerged shortly after was the award winning Booster Juice brand. In November of 1999, the first Booster Juice location opened at the corner of Broadmoor and Baseline Crossing in Sherwood Park, a suburb of Edmonton. Booster Juice would open another 15 locations in the next year, primarily in Alberta, and by the end of 2001 had reached 50 stores in Western Canada. The first U.S. store opened in late 2003, while international expansion reached as far as Dubai! Now with more than 300 stores across North America and around the world, the future is bright for Booster Juice. Look for us in one of our newest locations.

We’ve circled the globe in search of the world’s most healthy, potent ingredients… from deep in the Amazon rainforest and Japanese tea field, shrouded in mist we’ve emerged with Super foods:

     - Matcha Green Tea is the most premium of all varieties of green tea! When you consume matcha, you are consuming the actual tea leaves themselves (ground into a fine powder), as opposed to normal tea where you are just taking in dissolved nutrients. Ceremonial matcha has been used by monks for centuries, and the plantations that our matcha comes from are over 850 years old! In our stores, Matcha is served in the Matcha Monsoon and Mind over Matcha smoothies, the Matcha shaker and in a tin for home consumption.    - Acai comes from the Amazon Rainforest in Brazil. Approximately the size of a blueberry, it grows high on the Acai palm tree and tastes like a tropical raspberry with a hint of grape. The people of Brazil eat the berry as a ‘staple’ food, often mixed together in a bowl and topped with bananas and nuts. Health food expert Dr. Nicholas Perricone, while appearing on Oprah, called it “one of the world’s top 10 superfoods”. The nutritional benefits of the berry are amazing! Acai is served in the High Impact Acai and Brazilian Thunder smoothies, the Acai shaker and the Zola drink.  - Wheatgrass, one of the world’s top green foods, is a highly nutritional plant with a long list of health benefits. Essentially, you are consuming pure chlorophyll - or plant energy – in juice form. The wheatgrass is processed through a juicing machine to create a “shot” that is typically 1 or 2 ounces. Although it tastes like snow peas, the taste is definitely an ’acquired one’ and therefore is served with an orange or pineapple juice chaser. Nutritional Value- 2 ½ pounds of leafy green vegetables in one serving! WOW! BOOSTER JUICE… THE STORY

From the Publishers: Of all of the months of the year I absolutely adore September you can feel change is in the air, the fragrances of the harvest and the vibrant colors evoke a melancholy feeling within, reminding us another season is over and the cold one is about to be forced upon us. Our very own Jock Wilson was lucky enough to be a part of the Olympic experience and I’m thinking he is feeling a little melancholy himself. Our feature Babies starts on Page 16 and there is a plethora of information all about babies and such. Technology surrounds us on every level of our lives and to try and sort some of the techno-kid questions wander your finger over to pages 26 and 27 your always entertaining Family Pages. With the end of summer I thought it only fitting to include the best ever cocktails, in loving memory of the long hot days and soothing warm evenings, blubber-blubber. The Happy and Glorious Games!

London 2012 will not be remembered as the best ever Summer Olympics for Canadian athletes, but they were pretty darn good! While the majority of our top athletes did not produce the desired results, who will forget Canada’s only gold medalist Rosie MacLennan in Trampoline (I know my daughter won’t) or the amazing effort of the Canadian women’s soccer team? The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat (even worse when you are hosed by a terrible call). As I spent 10 days in London as a fan and a tourist, I couldn’t help but be impressed with the spirit and the organization of the staff and volunteer Games Makers. Just imagine the logistics of moving close to a million people a day in and out of the Olympic Park. There were eight different venues at the Park with the Stadium, Aquatics Center, Basketball Arena, Velopark, Copperbox, Riverbank Arena, Waterpolo Arena and BMX track. Many of these venues hosted morning, afternoon and evening events. Yes, there was the odd congestion, especially at the end of the evening, but the flow and spirit of the fans was truly out of this world. Maybe it was because Team GB was having such a successful Games, or maybe it was just because this was the Olympics and the biggest sporting event in the world!

To my amazement, lineups for most of the exhibitions in London were nonexistent. In Vancouver for the 2010 Olympics, fans would wait for two or three hours to enter one of the Country exhibitions. We walked right into Casa Brasil at Somerset House in the heart of London. The famed Olympic Museum featuring the Olympic Journey at the Royal Opera House had a 5 minute wait. There was no line-up for the crown jewels at the Tower of London and we waited longer to buy tickets than to get on the London Eye, which really is a must-see attraction. The major of London was not impressed as he sent out a passionate plea for the locals to return downtown. I was glad they stayed away. Not everything was expensive. Thousands of fans (including myself) lined the streets for the marathon, triathlon or the changing of the guards. Large screens were set up in three of London’s most iconic locations: Hyde Park, Victoria Park and Trafalgar Square. It was a trip of a lifetime. Thank you London and enjoy the 2012 Paralympics.

There was no scalping at these Games. Unlike here in North America, the Brits had a zero tolerance for scalping. One Canadian from Vancouver found out the hard way, after trying to cash in at Trafalgar Square, he was arrested and spent two nights in jail. Apparently he missed two events he had tickets for. I didn’t feel sorry for him. More than once I read stories in the newspaper how fans had lost their tickets on the train or in shops and the people who found these tickets went out of their way to return them to their rightful owners. “Watch out for the pick pockets,” I was warned heading in. It was never an issue. My wife almost left her purse on the tube and a stranger picked it up and gave it back to her. My favourite sporting moment of London 2012 was a trip with the family to Eton Dorney for Canoe Sprint. Cheering Adam van Koeverden to a silver medal in the K-1 1000m. We were hoping for gold as he led for 750m, but we were still proud Canadians. As an added bonus, on the same morning, Mark Oldershaw won bronze in the men’s Canoe 1000m. It was a good day! Thanks to the Canadian Olympic Committee, my family had passes to Canada Olympic House located in the Canadian Embassy in Trafalgar Square, a home for Canadian athletes to share with their friends, family and supporters. It was the only place in London where you could watch Canadian TV coverage of the Games and enjoy a Molson Canadian. Canada Olympic House was a little more exclusive than my visit to Holland Heineken House where I shared a pint with 7000 Dutch fans wearing orange at Alexandra Palace. Page 12

Washing Machines – Trending?

both. The pendulum swings……

‘Regression toward the mean’ or, why does bread go dry but crackers go soggy when either is left out? Most of us know of the pendulum effect (where a pendulum has wide swings but eventually stops at the middle), even we don’t tend to stop and think if we’re part of it. What all this means is that there may be wide variances but generally, everything tends toward the average. This applies to trends in appliances (think colours). The once conquering front load washer is now being challenged by the high efficiency top load washer. What is the difference in washing machine types?

Use only high efficiency detergent and has the most efficient water and energy use ratings, (Energy Star rated), of the domestic washer products. Although they have longer wash times, most have an excellent cycle selection that can accommodate any laundry requirement. They have large capacity and high spin speeds resulting in good rinsing and dryer clothes at the end of a cycle. Generally they can be ‘stacked’ but are more sensitive to floor/vibration issues. They do require some simple periodic maintenance, (cleaning), by the consumer.

Traditional top load washer

Uses regular detergent and has faster wash times. They use larger amounts of water and energy and the agitator can cause wear on clothes. Generally, they clean well on common fabrics but usually have less capacity and lower spin speeds resulting in clothes not being as well rinsed or dry at the end of the cycle. Usually a lower cost unit.

High efficiency top load washer

Use only high efficiency detergent and much less water and energy, (Energy Star rated), although has longer wash times. Generally very accommodating to cleaning various fabrics and with no traditional agitator, cause less wear on clothes. They have large capacity and higher spin speeds resulting in good rinsing and dryer clothes at the end of a cycle. They cannot be ‘stacked’ but may have less vibration and ‘odour’ issues than a front load. Many consumers have found that while preferring the top loader, they wanted more efficiency. Now they can have Page 14

The Newsy Neighbour

High efficiency front load washer

The most important single issue is what you – the consumer – actually need in a washing machine. Quite honestly, there is little point in buying a huge capacity, all the features, high efficiency washing machine if you only do one load of basic laundry a week. At the same time, an active family will tremendously benefit from the time and cost savings with the large capacity, cycle (fabric) selection and water/energy efficiencies of a high efficiency washer. Talk with your independent appliance retailer and don’t rely only on advertising or ‘numbers game’ claims; a smart, savvy and informed consumer is the only way to be. Remember – there are 4 sides to every story; one side, the other side, the political/media side and the truth. Boost your ‘smart’ quotient by reading; ‘Trust Me I’m Lying – Confessions …’ by Ryan HOLIDAY and www.senseaboutscience.org www.thenewsyneighbour.com

My wife asked me to “show her a good time.” So I showed her photos of me with my friends before we got married. Whoever said there’s no use in crying over spilled milk, obviously never pumped six ounces, then accidentally spilled it. Boys, if you don’t look like Calvin Klein models, don’t expect us to look like Victoria’s Secret Angels. Seeing a spider isn’t a problem. It becomes a problem when it disappears. They say, “You are what you eat!” That’s funny. I don’t remember eating a sexy beast this morning.

Loving Two

I walk along holding your 2-year-old hand, basking in the glow of our magical relationship. Suddenly I feel a kick from within, as if to remind me that our time alone is limited. And I wonder: how could I ever love another child as I love you? Then she is born, and I watch you. I watch the pain you feel at having to share me as you’ve never shared me before. I hear you telling me in your own way, ‘Please love only me.’ And I hear myself telling you in mine, ‘I can’t,’ knowing, in fact, that I never can again. You cry. I cry with you. I almost see our new baby as an intruder on the precious relationship we once shared. A relationship we can never quite have again. But then, barely noticing, I find myself attached to that new being, and feeling almost guilty. I’m afraid to let you see me enjoying her as though I am betraying you. But then I notice your resentment change, first to curiosity, then to protectiveness, and finally to genuine affection. More days pass, and we are settling into a new routine. The memory of days with just the two of us is fading fast. But something else is replacing those wonderful times we shared, just we two. There are new times; only now, we are three. I watch the love between you grow, the way you look at each other, touch each other. I watch how she adores you as I have for so long. I see how excited you are by each of her new accomplishments. And I begin to realize that I haven’t taken something from you, I’ve given something to you. I notice that I am no longer afraid to share my love openly with both of you. I find that my love for each of you is as different as you are, but equally strong. And my question is finally answered, to my amazement: Yes, I can love another child as much as I love you, only differently. And although I realize that you may have to share my time, I now know you’ll never share my love. There is enough of that for both of you. You each have your own supply. I love you – both. And I thank you both for blessing my life. ~ Author Unknown

It is known as touch, and the art of touch is selfmassage and massage. Studies show that without self-massage or massage, we humans will become ill; for babies, they will lose weight, have a hard time growing up healthy, and will have a hard time developing healthy relationships with themselves and others. It also helps strengthen the baby’s immune systems; in turn making baby much happier and healthier. This touch can be from a loving caring parent, sibling or any other person who is looking after the baby. Self-massage or massage is not just a touch; it is a way of showing love, caring, healing, and appreciation for yourself and your baby. When massaging your baby on a regular basis, you create a healthy and happy bond between each other! Here are some quick tips: massage your baby when they are quiet or well-rested, before or right after a nap is a really good time. Another good idea is to get everything ready before you decide to give your baby a massage like: a cozy surface, warm blanket, massage oil, and a diaper. The next thing is make sure the room is warm enough that your baby is comfortable with minimal clothing on. It helps you to start asking permission from your baby if they are ready for a massage. This helps them learn about healthy touch! Please pay attention to how your baby reacts to your touch, pressure and when your baby would like you to stop. The most important thing about massaging your baby is that you both have fun and enjoy each other’s company! ~ By Cynthia Barnesky

A Childhood Without Diapers

Maternal Instincts Doula Services

By Danielle Fermin

Empowering women through informed childbirth

Imagine having a diaper-free household – no expenses being thrown into the garbage, no hassle of changing your infant’s bottoms that he/she may have worn for 2 minutes, and no need for a change table, diaper bag, changing pad, diaper pins, etc. Too hard to picture? Culturally, child rearing practices differ according to geographic location, beliefs, and values and in some cultures, children are brought up without diapers.

Please contact me for your free consultation to find out how a doula can help you to have a faster, easier labour and birth.

According to DiaperFreeBaby.org (2010), this practice is called Elimination Communication (EC). EC “is a gentle, natural, non-coercive process by which a baby, preferably beginning in early infancy, learns with the loving assistance of parents and caregivers to communicate about and address his or her elimination needs.” As you become more attentive to your child’s needs through verbal and non-verbal cues, this practice helps you bond with your baby by creating a trusting and understanding relationship.

maternalinstincts@hotmail.ca www.facebook.com/maternalinstincts

Parents and caregivers are able to introduce this eliminating habit at any age or developmental level of readiness. It can be an immediate or gradual introduction. You will observe your baby’s “timing patterns and rhythms” and body language and signals. Being aware of what causes your baby to squirm, fuss, stir, or wake from sleep will help you gain confidence and understanding around your baby’s elimination needs. You will begin to notice your baby indicating the toilet place or becoming still and pausing in activity; these opportunities will help you follow your intuition to interpret what each signal your baby gives you actually means. When practicing EC, comfortably position your baby over a desired ‘elimination spot’ and then, make a specific cueing sound, like ‘psss’ to encourage your baby to pee or poop. Soon, your baby will associate the cueing sound to eliminating. EC does not have to be a full-time commitment; it can be done part-time, and occasionally. If there is more than one caregiver for the child, then, you could share information about what the elimination cues and routines to ensure all caregivers are following the same practices and help stabilize your child’s elimination habits. Never try to force your baby to eliminate as it disrupts the bond and attachment that you have both been strengthening. Remember, EC can be practiced in many ways. Depending on your environment, level of readiness and personal preferences, trial and error is the only way you will begin to find the right routine for you and your child. For more information about monitoring your child’s overall development from birth to six years, please access the Ages and Stages program through Kidz 1st Network Parent Link Centre at 403-207-7060. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Q. My brother tells me that since my husband has a big nose, and genes for big noses are dominant, my baby will have a big nose as well. Is this true? A. The odds are greater that your brother will have a fat lip. Q. Since I became pregnant, my breasts, rear end, and even my feet have grown. Is there anything that gets smaller during pregnancy? A. Yes, your bladder. Q. Ever since I’ve been pregnant, I haven’t been able to go to bed at night without onion rings. Is this a normal craving? A. Depends on what you’re doing with them. Q. The more pregnant I get, the more often strangers smile at me. Why? A. Because you’re fatter than they are. Q. My wife is five months pregnant and so moody that sometimes she’s borderline irrational. A. So what’s your question? Q. Will I love my dog less when the baby is born? A. No, but your husband might get on your nerves. Q. Under what circumstances can sex at the end of pregnancy bring on labour? A. When the sex is between your husband and another woman.

He has advanced from drawing lines to imitating drawing circles, dots, small lines and swirls. He can cut paper with scissors and is able to turn the pages of a book one at a time. AGES AND STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT THIRTY-ONE TO THIRTY-SIX MONTHS By Jeanette MacKay, Reprinted This is the eighth in a series of articles on child development written to help parents and caregivers recognize and understand the ages and stages of a child’s physical, emotional, social and intellectual development during the first five years. These are only guidelines as every child is unique with their own personality, learning style and family background. There are, however, some general similarities that can help you recognize the stages of development and offer a nurturing environment where your child may develop to their full potential. The last half of your toddler’s third year is full of new and exciting developments. Your toddler seeks your praise and support of his efforts and he needs to know how special he is to you and how much you love him. Use every opportunity you have to focus on his positive behaviours, praising him and recognizing his achievements. Emotionally, your toddler is becoming more comfortable with new people. She wants independence but may fear new experiences. Along with this independence comes the need for gentle reminders of simple rules. Emotions may shift suddenly, happy to sad, angry to silly and she is learning how to deal with these emotions. She can sometimes use words to describe her feelings. Your toddler is beginning to recognize and respond to other children’s feelings and is able to talk about how someone else may be feeling. She loves to have her achievements recognized by you and is more willing to do something if she thinks it is her idea. Physically, your toddler continues to strengthen and fine tune his muscles. He can run while avoiding obstacles and without falling down. He is able to walk a few alternating steps on a balance beam and can climb up a ladder. He pedals a tricycle and enjoys group activities which involve running, galloping, crawling, rolling Page 20

The Newsy Neighbour

Intellectually, your toddler is using language to describe who, what, and where statements. She may be using five word sentences and, “Me do it” changes to, “I can do it myself.” She may create stories through dramatic play and talks to herself about recent events and make believe characters. Creative movement is a favourite activity. She can retell short stories and enjoys reciting nursery rhymes. Your toddler is able to match similar pictures or objects and can sort different objects. Socially, your toddler is able to play alongside others comfortably and can spend a brief time happily playing with others, sharing and taking turns. He expresses affection openly and seeks praise for his accomplishments. He likes playing make believe and this is one way he is able to sort through the meaning of his daily activities. Routine is very important to him and he needs to know ahead of time when that routine may be changed. Comfort, play with and teach your toddler by providing the appropriate motor and sensory stimulation. Focus on her positive behaviours, giving lots of praise and encouragement. Acknowledge your toddler’s feelings and talk about them. Use books about feelings and stories such as Goldilocks and the Three Bears to explore how others might feel when certain things happen to them. Have a special story time each day when you are able to cuddle with your toddler and explore life through books. Let her turn the pages and talk about the pictures, encouraging language development and fine motor skills. Talk about your toddler’s day and ask her about things you know she is interested in. Use number songs and rhymes to explore new words and counting. Make up silly ‘What Am I?’ riddles to provide opportunity to have a good time and laugh. Games such as ‘Follow the Leader’ and ‘Hop Scotch’ encourage turn taking and development of gross motor skills. Provide dramatic play props such as dress up clothes, play money, food containers, puppets and dolls. Build an obstacle course with blocks and hoops to go through, over, under, and around. Introduce the concept of first, second, and third; you go first, I’ll go second. Begin using two step directions and play games like ‘Mother, May I?’ and ‘Red Light, Green Light’ to develop listening skills. Make a picture chart of your toddler’s day so she knows what to expect and to introduce the concept of time; bedtime, nap time, breakfast time. Include her favourite activities and special events on her chart. Invite one or two friends for a special activity such as baking cookies or going to the park, giving her opportunities to play with other children. Every day tell your toddler how much you love her and how great she is. Give her smiles, high fives, pats on the back, and hugs. Tell her she is super, cool, and fun to be with. Parenting is a joy and a challenge but the more joy you can have with your child, the fewer challenges you will face.

KISSING

Kids, aged 5 to 10, were asked questions about what they thought of kissing... • When a person gets kissed for the first time, they fall down, and they don’t get up for at least an hour.” ~ Wendy, age 8 • “You should never kiss a girl unless you have enough bucks to buy her a big ring and her own VCR, ‘cause she’ll want to have videos of the wedding.” ~ Jim, age 10 • “Never kiss in front of other people. It’s a big embarrassing thing if anybody sees you. But if nobody sees you, I might be willing to try it with a handsome boy, but just for a few hours.” ~ Kally, age 9 • “You learn [how to kiss] right on the spot when the gooshy feelings get the best of you.” ~ Doug, age 7 • “If it’s your mother, you can kiss her anytime. But if it’s a new person, you have to ask permission.” ~ Roger, age 6 • “It’s never okay to kiss a boy. They always slobber all over you. That’s why I stopped doing it.” ~ Tammy, age 10 • “I know one reason kissing was created. It makes you feel warm all over, and they didn’t always have electric heat or fireplaces or even stoves in their houses.” ~ Gina, age 8 • “The law says you have to be eighteen, so I wouldn’t want to mess with that.” ~ Curt, age 7 • “The rules go like this: if you kiss someone, then you should marry her and have kids with her. It’s the right thing to do.” ~ Howard, age 8

How People In Love Act

Kids, aged 5 to 10, were asked questions about what they thought of people in love. • “Lovers will just be staring at each other and their food will get cold. Other people care more about the food.” ~ Brad, age 8 • “They act mooshy. Like puppy dogs, except puppy dogs don’t wag their tails nearly as much.” ~ Arnold, age 10 • “All of a sudden, the people get movies fever so they can sit together in the dark.” ~ Sherm, age 8 • “Romantic adults usually are all dressed up, so if they are just wearing jeans it might mean they used to go out or they just broke up.” ~ Sarah, age 9 • “It’s love if they order one of those desserts that are on fire. They like to order those because it’s just like how their hearts are on fire.” ~ Christine, age 9 • “See if the man picks up the cheque. That’s how you can tell if he’s in love.” ~ John, age 9 • “Many daters just eat pork chops and French fries and talk about love.” ~ Craig, age 9

Housekeeping Tips for New Mothers Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to the first session of Housekeeping Tips for New Mothers. If you’re a Martha Stewart type of housekeeper, this column is NOT for you. However, for the rest of you, this is your chance to learn 15 Secret Shortcuts to Good Housekeeping that your mother never told you. SECRET TIP 1: DUCT TAPE No home should be without an ample supply. Not only is it handy for plumbing repairs, but it’s a great way to hem drapes, tablecloths, clothes, just about anything. No muss, no fuss. Time: 2-3 minutes SECRET TIP 2: OVENS If you think ovens are just for baking, think again. Ovens represent at least 9 cubic feet of hidden storage space, which means they’re a great place to shove dirty dishes, dirty clothes, or just about anything you want to get out of sight when company’s coming. CAUTION: check oven before turning it on… IF you turn it on. Time: 2 minutes SECRET TIP 3: CLOTHES DRYERS Like Secret Tip 2, except bigger. CAUTION: Avoid hiding flammable objects here. Time: 2.5 minutes SECRET TIP 4: WASHING MACHINES & FREEZERS Like Secret Tip 3, except even bigger. Time: 3 minutes SECRET TIP 5: DUST RUFFLES No bed should be without one. Devotees of Martha Stewart believe dust ruffles exist to keep dust out from under a bed or to help coordinate the colourful look of a bedroom. The rest of us know a dust ruffle’s highest and best use is to hide whatever you’ve managed to shove under the bed. (Refer to Secret Tips 2,3,4.)Time: 4 minutes SECRET TIP 6: DISHES Don’t use them. Use plastic or paper plates and you won’t have to. Time: 1 minute SECRET TIP 7: CLOTHES WASHING This secret tip is brought to you by an inventive teenager. When his mother went on a housekeeping strike for a month, the teen discovered you can extend the life of your underwear by two... if you turn them wrong side out and, yes, rerun it. Time: 3 seconds SECRET TIP 8: IRONING In between curling your hair, use the hot wand to iron minor wrinkles out of your clothes. Yes, it really does work. Time: 5 minutes

6th Annual Conference

We are pleased to present Judy Arnall on October 27th, 2012. The topics covered at this conference will be Discipline Without Distress, Brain Building Play Ideas, & Multiple Intelligence

Discipline Without Distress: Ten Essential tools for the New Millennium

We are living in an exciting new digital world. Parents and caregivers need new tools!

Judy is an international, award winning professional speaker and a well-known Canadian parenting expert, who has given advice during television interviews on CBC, CTV, and Global. Some of her publications include articles in Chatelaine, Today’s Parent, The Globe and Mail, Sun Media, and Postmedia News. Judy is the author of the bestseller, “Discipline Without Distress: 135 Tools for raising caring, responsible children without time-out, spanking, punishment or bribery.” As a parent of five children, Judy has a broad understanding of the issues facing parents and understands the impact of the digital generation. She has just released an educational DVD: “Plugged-In Parenting: Connecting with the Digital Generation for Health, Safety and Love.”

In this presentation, we will explore modern issues and concerns regarding discipline and child rearing, and examine typical age appropriate behaviours, distinguishing between discipline and punishment. Respectful, age appropriate tools will be presented and (if time allows) participants will be given an opportunity to practice skills.

Brain Building Play Ideas: How to Raise a Smart Child

What do young children need in their play and how does their play affect their development? How can the adults in their lives maximize their brain development? Presentation outline is based on Canadian Pediatric Society, Growing Miracles (Three Cheers for the Early Years), Parent Effectiveness Training, and Invest In Kids Recommendations.

Multiple Intelligence: Every Child is Gifted

Most of us are familiar with three types of intelligence: linguistic, visual-spatial, and logical intelligence. However, Harvard psychologist, Howard Gardner, took the education world by storm when he proposed that every person had 8 different intelligences. Find out what they are and learn how to nurture them. This presentation is based on the work of Howard Gardner and Thomas Armstong.

It’s all so confusing to me, all this new technology and social networking, like smartphones, iPads, Blackberry’s, Skype, Yahoo, iTunes, blogging, Twitter, YouTube, Amazon, MySpace, Facebook – I could go on and on. Our children are being inundated with new technology; just go on the web (another one) and you could spend literally weeks or months researching the newest, biggest and best! In virtually every way imaginable, technology has permeated nearly every facet of kids’ and adults’ everyday lives, from the personal to professional and social. In a world where, according to one survey, 81% of toddlers have an online presence by the time they are two. No kidding! And most parents are still confused about how to best manage their children’s relationship with technology Consider that kids aged two to five are better able to play video games and downloaded apps than tie their shoelaces or ride a bike. And tots as young as two are being given faux plastic cell phones and tablets. (Even Mattel and Hasbro’s toy lines are increasingly giving way to app-enabled action figures and Barbie dolls with built-in digital cameras.) A recent study from Nielsen found seven out of 12 children ages 12 and under who live in tablet-owning households use the devices, and it suggests parents give their children tablets to occupy them while traveling and waiting in restaurants. Is there anything wrong with using the iPad as a babysitter? Screen time should always be limited, and use of high-tech devices balanced with other healthy everyday activities. And parents should always make a point of keeping an eye on and spending time their children — a rewarding and healthy experience for all. Teach kids positive computing habits, encourage them to come forward with questions surrounding negative situations or questionable content encountered online, and set a good example with your online behaviours. Build trust, foster parent-child communication and teach your kids how to make good decisions and you’ll empower them to safely connect and interact. No more than 30 minutes to one hour of screen time a day. No accessing high-tech devices in private areas of the home, with use restricted to common gathering spots like the living room and den. No apps or video games without spending an equal amount of time devoted to other pursuits — reading, nature walks, riding bikes, etc. As a person who works in the technology field, I’ll be the first to admit – I’d rather see children read a book, see a play, or go outdoors and enjoy sports than spend time vegetating in front of the computer or iPad.

Here is a list of websites for you to enjoy with your children – spend the time learning together in this new world of technology.

The National Geographic’s website is amazing, as are Disney and Nickelodeon’s site. One of the best things about the digital media explosion is the opportunities it offers kids to be creative. The sites on this list let kids create online – from music to movies. So let your kid's inner artist free!

- Storybird.com - We Make Stories.com - Kerpoof.com - MeetMeAtTheCorner.org - Muxtape.com Free online kids' games can help entertain and educate children who are looking for fun on the Web and you don’t have to pay a thing.

- Lego.com - Ramogames.com - Disney.com - Hasbro.com - AgameAday.com Does your daughter need ideas for fun websites to visit? Tween girls will love these sites, whether they're into fashion, blogging, or making music.

- AllGirlArcade - Discovery Girls.com - NewMoonGirls.com - AllyKatzz.com - GirlsGoTech.org

Trust me on this – if you cannot find fun and educational sites on the web, something is definitely wrong; there are hundreds! Have fun all you techies and enjoy the beautiful autumn weather. By: Kathryn Hartwell

Another very helpful site is commonsensemedia.org for loads more sites for you to enjoy.

Drag racing lingo Breakout: Used only in handicap racing, “breakout” refers to a race car running quicker than the driver has predicted. The driver’s prediction is called the dial-in and is posted on the race car. The driver who breaks out loses the race unless his or her opponent has committed a more serious foul, such as a red-light or crossing the centerline of the dragstrip. Burnout: Spinning the rear tires in water to heat and clean them before a run for better traction. In most classes, a burnout precedes every run down the dragstrip. Christmas Tree: The noticeable electronic starting device between the lanes on the starting line. It displays a calibrated-light countdown for each driver. Elapsed Time (e.t.) : The time it takes a drag-race vehicle to travel from the starting line to the finish line. Funny Car: With aerodynamically enhanced carbon-fiber bodies that loosely resemble the production cars on which they are based, these supercharged, fuel-injected, nitromethane-burning machines travel the quarter-mile in 4.6 seconds at more than 330 mph, slightly slower than a Top Fuel dragster. Most teams use an aluminum version of the 426 Chrysler Hemi engine that produces an estimated 7,000 horsepower. Jr. Dragster: A half-scale version of a Top Fuel dragster designed to be driven by kids ages 8-17 in the NHRA Jr. Drag Racing League. Using a five-horsepower, single-cylinder engine, a Jr. Dragster can go as fast as 80 mph in as few as 7.90 seconds on the eighth-mile. Methanol: Pure methyl alcohol used as fuel in Top Alcohol Dragsters, Top Alcohol Funny Cars, and even some Jr. Dragsters. Nitromethane (“nitro”) : Made specifically as a fuel for drag racing, it is the result of a chemical reaction between nitric acid and propane. Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars use nitromethane. Nitrous Oxide (“nitrous,” “N2O”) : When injected into an engine under pressure, nitrous oxide gives the engine a sudden boost in power by introducing more oxygen into the fuel mixture. Nitrous oxide is not allowed in any NHRA category except Pro Mod (exhibition) and some E.T. bracket classes. Pro Stock: Pro Stock cars look a lot like street cars, but looks can be deceiving. Extensive modifications to the cylinder heads, manifold, chassis, and suspension thrust them to 6.6-second elapsed times at more than 205 mph. The most popular engine choices for these carbureted, gas-burning vehicles are the GM big-block wedge, the Mopar Hemi, and the Ford wedge. Reaction Time: The time it takes a driver to react to the green starting light on the Christmas Tree, measured in thousandths of a second. A perfect reaction time is .000. Top Fuel Dragsters: The fastest-accelerating vehicles in the world, these are the most recognizable of all drag race cars. The 25-foot-long landlocked missiles can cover the quarter-mile in 4.4 seconds at speeds faster than 335 mph. The engine of choice is an aluminum version of the famous Chrysler Hemi. The supercharged, fuel-injected nitromethane-burning engines produce an estimated 7,000 horsepower. ~ Source: http://www.nhra.net

A pirate at the local bar discusses his past

Picture This!

A seaman meets a pirate in a bar, and talk turns to their adventures on the sea. The seaman notes that the pirate has a peg-leg, a hook, and an eye patch.

A man goes skydiving. After a fantastic free fall, he pulls the rip cord to open his parachute but nothing happens. He tries everything but can’t get it open. Just then another man flies by him, going UP. The skydiver yells, “Hey, you know anything about parachutes?” The man replies, “No, do you know anything about gas stoves?”

The seaman asks, “So, how did you end up with the pegleg?” The pirate replies, “We was in a storm at sea, and I was swept overboard into a school of sharks. Just as me men were pulling me out, a shark bit me leg off.” “Wow!” said the seaman. “What about your hook”? “Well”, replied the pirate, “We were boarding an enemy ship and were battling the other sailors with swords. One of the enemies cut me hand off.”

“Incredible!” remarked the seaman. “How did you get the eye patch”? “A seagull dropping fell into me eye,” replied the pirate. “You lost your eye to a seagull dropping?” the sailor asked incredulously. “Well,” said the pirate, “It was me first day with me hook.” www.thenewsyneighbour.com

You may have noted in our July Issue we added the new “Veggie Heads” column for all our vegetarian friends. I always thought I could never be a vegetarian because I just could not do without my BBQ ribs, steak and crab legs, but there are some very good vegetarian appetizers I will eat. I love finger food and, with September being our Entertainment Issue, I have included a few very yummy vegetarian Hors d’oeuvre’s!

Cheese Diablo Wafers 1/2 pound shredded cheddar cheese 1 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 cup (1 stick) salted butter, softened 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper I usually double the recipe because these go quickly! Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and set aside. In a large bowl mix all of the ingredients together by hand, until everything is well incorporated and forms into a dough. Roll pieces of dough into 1 inch balls and line evenly on baking sheet. Bake for about 10-12 minutes or until they have flattened out and are brown around the edges.

Smoked Mozzarella Spread 1 pound smoked mozzarella, coarsely chopped 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 3 tablespoons sun-dried tomatoes, chopped 1 tablespoon chopped parsley Salt and freshly ground pepper Flatbread crackers, for serving In a food processor, combine the mozzarella, olive oil, and sundried tomatoes and process to a coarse paste. Scrape into a bowl. Stir in the parsley and season with salt and pepper; enjoy alongside flatbread crackers.

Roasted Chickpeas A delicious, high fibre snack, these roasted chickpeas are a crispy, crunchy alternative to bland, mushy chickpeas. 1 12-ounce can chickpeas, drained 2 Tbsp olive oil, Salt, Garlic salt Cayenne pepper (optional) Preheat oven to 450 F. Blot chickpeas with paper towel to dry them. In a bowl, toss chickpeas with olive oil, and season to taste with salt, garlic salt, and cayenne pepper. Spread on a baking sheet, and bake for 30 to 40 minutes, until browned and crunchy. Watch carefully the last few minutes to avoid burning. I can hardly wait to get off my computer to bake the Cheese Diablo Wafers to dip in the Smoked Mozzarella Spread and snack on the Roasted Chickpeas! I may not ever become a vegetarian, but I’m sure going to enjoy these vegetarian appetizers. Yummy in my tummy! ~ By: Kathryn Hartwell www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Start Now! September is here, and the fall chill is in the air. Did you meet last year’s New Year’s resolution? Have you lost those 5 extra pounds you put on at Christmas and thought you would lose over the summer? Most people will answer no. Setting realistic, attainable goals are sometimes harder than people think. The mindset is ‘go big or go home,’ and that usually sets people up to fail. Setting a large goal can be so overwhelming that most people quit even before they really get started. Last month, I talked about healthy safe fat loss being 1-2 pounds a week. That’s 6-8 pounds a month! Most people who want to lose weight want it gone yesterday. They don’t usually stop to think about how long it took to put the weight on. If you ask, most people say it (most likely) took years. If it took years or months to put the weight on, wouldn’t it be unrealistic to expect it gone in a week? Setting a realistic goal takes just a little bit of prep and a bit of planning. Grab a pen and paper when you write down your goal (the one you secretly think you will never make); it makes you more accountable! Ask yourself is this a goal that I want, or is this a goal I should want? Do you want to lose 20 pounds? Or should you lose 20 pounds? Never set a goal that you think you should do; you will fail every time. Next, write down why you want that goal, and when you want that goal. Are your answers realistic? The final step is to break down the goal. Setting a monthly goal and a weekly goal will make the final goal seem that much more attainable. You can even go as far as making daily goals. A monthly goal could be to lose 6 pounds. A weekly goal could be to get to the gym 4 times in a week. A daily goal could be packing your lunches for work, so that you eat properly. Separately, these small goals seem kind of insignificant but combined, they propel you towards the finish line. Remember, 6-8 pounds a month is safe fat loss. If it took you years to get where you’re at now, it’s not fair to yourself to expect it to be gone tomorrow. Don’t wait to set another New Year’s resolution; start now! ~ Anndee King

Improve Recovery Time with Post-Natal Care

I don’t have time to hate people who hate me because I’m too busy loving the people who love me.

While Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese medicine are well known to aid in conception, labour and delivery, its role in postpartum care should also be mentioned. The practice of regulating body systems using energy medicine (acupuncture) and herbs has been ongoing for thousands of years. Chinese medicine treatment is a preferred preconception to postpartum and beyond; for mother and child. There are many ways Chinese medicine can ease the transition into motherhood including acupuncture, herbal prescriptions, nutrition and exercise. Postpartum depression, night sweats, peritoneal discomfort, bowel irregularities, insomnia, fatigue and irritability are all examples of conditions that may benefit from treatment. The idea that it will take women at least a month to fully recover from childbirth is not a widespread one in today’s society. Usually partners or relatives will endeavor to be around after the birth for a week (two if the woman is very lucky), but then for most women it’s back to ‘normal’. The reality is most need more time – and that is ok! While 30 days (or even 100 days) of recovery time may sound extreme, it is reasonable considering that this time is to compensate for the experience of being pregnant for 9 months, and labour and breast feeding in many cases for another year. Women need to be taken seriously when symptoms do occur and joint care of eastern and western medicine is the best approach when treating any postpartum conditions.

Everyone smiles in the same language.

Salt, Anyone??

Salt has been used for thousands of years not only as a condiment, but also to preserve foods. Nowadays, we take it for granted as the cheapest condiment, but salt was once considered so valuable, it was used for currency. New studies have health professionals debating over previous theories which claim salt is bad for the heart. Of course, as with most things, the adage “all things in moderation rings true. It is an established fact that salt is essential to the body, performing the function of turning carbohydrates to fat, ridding the body of carbon dioxide and is necessary for heart and muscle contractions. Salt is necessary for the body to produce digestive acids, stimulate the liver and helps get rid of gas. There are so many different types of salt appearing on the shelves, I wondered to myself if sea salt is better for you than the conventional table salt, so I did some research. Sea salt is produced through evaporation of seawater, usually with little processing, which leaves behind certain trace minerals and elements depending on its water source. Table salt is mined from underground salt deposits. Table salt is more heavily processed to eliminate minerals and usually contains an additive to prevent clumping. By weight, sea salt and table salt contain the same amount of sodium chloride. Your body needs only a very tiny amount of salt to stay healthy. Most people get far too much — mostly from processed foods. So regardless of which type of salt you prefer, use a light hand with the saltshaker. Dr. David Brownstein, author of Salt Your Way to Health, advocates using pure, unrefined salt. He is keen on restoring iodine levels in our thyroids for better overall endocrine health. Besides containing iodine, pure sea salt is a factor for better iodine absorption from other sources. Sea salt also contains potassium, which is vital for regulating pH balance along with sodium and chloride. Yes, untainted sodium chloride is vital for health. Chloride also contributes to creating digestive acids. Pure salt contains magnesium, the master mineral that is involved with over 300 cellular metabolic actions. Sulfur and other nutrients are in sea salt as well. It makes sense to me that unprocessed sea salt would contain minerals that table salt would not have and I find it tastes better; less salty, if that makes any sense. Try both and decide for yourself; but I would personally say perhaps the sea salt may be better for you. And to add a little spice (hehe) to your life, I have included a recipe to make your own seasoning salt. This is a basic recipe and really you could put your own spin on this by adding your own favourite herbs and spices; use your imagination and have a spicy time!

Infectious diseases and Vaccines

www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Now it is your turn for some pampering... 搂

Infectious diseases are caused by pathogenic microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, parasites or fungi; the diseases can be spread, directly or indirectly, from one person to another. One of the most important things you can do as a parent is to make sure your child is immunized against 13 serious vaccinepreventable diseases. Vaccines have saved the lives of more babies and children than any other medical intervention in the past 50 years. It is important to continue vaccine programs for numerous reasons. First, unless a disease has completely disappeared, there is a real risk that small outbreaks can turn into large epidemics if most of the community is not protected. Some diseases, such as tetanus, are caused by bacteria that live naturally in the soil. The risk of diseases like tetanus will never disappear, so continued immunization is important. No vaccine is 100% effective. There will always be some people who are not immune, even though they have had their shots or cannot recieve vaccines. This small minority will be protected as long as people around them are immunized. Most vaccine-preventable diseases are still common in other parts of the world. Travellers can carry them from country to country. If we are not protected by immunization, these diseases will quickly spread. For example, most cases of measles in Canada today can be traced to someone who travelled here from a country where measles is more common. Experience from other countries shows that diseases quickly return when fewer people are immunized: A recent outbreak of measles in Quebec beginning in April 2011 resulted in 676 confirmed and 73 probable cases occurring between April 3, 2011 and November 2, 2011. As of November 2, 2011 the outbreak is ongoing. Ireland saw measles soar to more than 1,200 cases in the year 2000, as compared with just 148 the previous year, because immunization rates fell to around 76%. Several children died in this outbreak. A large outbreak of rubella (German measles) occurred in Nebraska in 1999. All 83 cases in this outbreak involved adults who had not been immunized. Most of them came from countries where rubella immunization is not routine. The outbreak spread from a meat-packing plant to the general community, including several pregnant women and two day care centres. The greatest danger from rubella is to infants, who may be born with congenital rubella syndrome if their mothers are infected during pregnancy. In 1994, there were 5,000 deaths due to diphtheria in Russia after the organized immunization system was suspended. Previ-

About one person in 10 with diphtheria still dies in spite of medical treatment. In the U.K., a major drop in rates of immunization against pertussis (whooping cough) in 1974 was followed by an epidemic of more than 100,000 cases and 36 deaths by 1978. Japan had 13,000 cases and 41 deaths from whooping cough in 1979, after only 30% of children received pertussis immunization. In earlier years, when most children received vaccine, Japan had only a few hundred cases of whooping cough and no deaths.

Entertaining Dinner Disaster A couple trying to break into society hosted a dinner party. As the guests were enjoying their dinner salad, the maid called the hostess from the table. The maid informed her that the cat had climbed on the kitchen table and eaten a large portion of the salmon's mid- section. The hostess decided to ďŹ ll the eaten portion with some canned salmon and other camouage. As the guests were enjoying the ďŹ sh, the maid called the hostess into the kitchen and announced while wringing her hands, "Madam, the cat is dead." The hostess and her husband informed the guests and suggested it might be best if everyone went to the hospital and had their stomachs pumped. Returning home, the couple asked the maid where she had put the cat. "It is still out on the road where the car ran over it."

Come to Dinner If you ask the wordly-wise among your friends what kind of gathering they most enjoy, nine times out of ten the answer will be a little dinner for 6 or 8 people. Chosen carefully and encouraged by good food and wine, a group of that size will produce conviviality and conversation that goes beyond the superficial chitchat of the cocktail party. Now is the time to bring on your best culinary accomplishments and artful settings. Light the candles, play the music, set the table with imagination, dress in something special, but save your greatest skills for the kitchen. Finesse and freshness should be of paramount importance. The other essential is your presence with your guests and if that means enlisting hired help in the kitchen and at the table, go ahead. Your absence will not make your guests grow fonder; on the contrary, it will make them ill at ease. To bring off this kind of occasion with full success you need to pre-plan. It’s not the kind of thing to be sandwiched into a full working day. Save it for those times when you’re free to enjoy the anticipation, preparation and culmination of your own exquisite little dinner party!

“There are three possible parts to a date , of which at least two must be offered: entertainment, food , and affection . It is customary to begin a series of dates with a great deal of entertainment, a moderate amount of food , and the merest suggestion of affection . As the amount of affection increases, the entertainment can be reduced proportionately. When the affection IS the entertainment, we no longer call it dating. Under no circumstances can the food be omitted .” ― Judith Martin “I would rather entertain and hope that people learned something than educate people and hope they were entertained” ― Walt Disney Company www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Luscious Joys By: Kathryn Hartwell Autumn and fruit cocktails just kind of go together, somehow. Over the years, all my children have turned their noses up at fruit cocktail, but I think all of that is going to change once I make one of these delicious cakes at the next family gathering! I know a lot of people forgo the canned fruits because of the sugar content – but once in a while is not going to hurt you, and you just need to have a little sweet treat every now and then.

FRUIT COCKTAIL CAKE It’s not healthy at all but that is why it tastes so good. The canned fruit adds moisture to the cake and the topping is just plain fattening and delicious. It is a must to heap copious amounts of whipped cream on top. 1 1/2 cups sugar, 2 cups flour, 2 tsp baking soda, 1/2 tsp salt, 2 eggs-slightly beaten, 1 14oz can fruit cocktail-with juice Combine all ingredients except the flour and beat together well with an electric mixer. Add flour and blend until flour is all absorbed. Grease a 9x13 pan or a 10-12 inch round or spring form pan. Bake cake for approx. 45 min in a 350 degree oven. Topping: 3/4 cup white sugar, 1/2 cup cream, 1/2 cup butter 1 tsp vanilla (add after other ingredients have boiled) Just before cake is done, place the topping ingredients in a microwavable bowl and bring to a full boil. Watch that it does not boil over. You can also do this on the stove top, stirring constantly. Remove cake from oven and immediately poke fork holes all over the top. I make them about 2” apart over the whole cake. Pour the hot topping over the cake slowly, allowing the topping to soak into the holes. This makes the cake very moist. Allow cake to cool on counter. Serve with whipped cream or ice cream.

FRUIT COCKTAIL CAKE USING A CAKE MIX This delicious cake comes together fast, starting with a cake mix 1 (18 1/4 ounce) boxes yellow cake mix (The kind with pudding in the mix), 1 (16 ounce) cans fruit cocktail, undrained. 1 cup coconut, plus, 1/2 cup coconut, 2 eggs, 1/2 cup brown sugar Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Combine cake mix, fruit cocktail with juices, 1 cup of coconut and eggs in a large mixer bowl. Blend, and then beat at medium speed for 2 minutes. Pour batter into greased 9x13 pan. Sprinkle batter evenly with remaining 1/2 cup of coconut, and then 1/2 cup of brown sugar. Bake at for 45 min. Serve warm and yummy.

JELL-O FRUIT COCKTAIL CAKE 1 (1 lb. 1 oz.) can fruit cocktail, 1 (3 oz.) peach Jell-O (dry) 1 sm. pkg. mini marshmallows, 1 lemon cake mix Sprinkle Jell-O on the bottom of a greased 9x13 cake pan. Pour fruit cocktail over Jell-O and stir. Then make an even layer of marshmallows over cocktail. Mix lemon cake mix as directed on package. Spread batter over marshmallows. Bake at 350 degrees for 35-45 minutes. Cool on rack for about 1 hour, and then turn on plate. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

The I Am A... Series

Fruits & Vegetables The time has arrived to close the BOOK, no pun intended, on the I AM A...Fruits and Vegetables. We began in October, 2009 with “I AM A PUMPKIN” and we published an “I AM A” article every single month for two and a half years. Through the help and guidance of our publisher, with all the re-writes, designing and changes, the book was published in March, 2012. We have continued to include the NEW re-written, bigger and better articles included in the book every month since, but, that chapter is now behind us. No longer will you find your favourite Fruits and Vegetable articles within the pages of The Newsy Neighbour!! To read all the re-written content and to try all the fabulous new recipes, you must purchase your own copy of I Am A...Fruits and Vegetables. Did you know, if you sent in a recipe to us including Fruits and Vegetables prior to the publishing date your recipe is most likely included in the BOOK!!!!! Some of the recipe contributors include Rose-Marie MacPherson, Sandie Zobell, Valarie Turgeon, Edith Pujo, Gladys Neufeld, John Goodman, Esther Shura, Tammy Johnson and Louise Thomson just to name a few. All good things must come to an end, but with an ending comes a new beginning. Starting in October (how appropriate) we will be sharing our NEW...

I AM A…Nuts and Seeds, Herbs, Spices and Teas. FOR THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER ...

When you purchase I Am A... Fruits & Vegetables we will donate

$5 from every book, to School Fuel!

Every school day, School Fuel serves a nutritious breakfast to students who have not had breakfast! Our program is expanding and we need more bakers to help bake muffins. In addition, donations of flour, sugar, baking ingredients, cheese and apples are happily and gratefully accepted. If this interests you, please call Meredith @ 403-901-2030.

There has been thunder lately. I am a brave ninja. I am strong, I protect my family (except for her), and I can bark any one of you under the table. I will admit when I am defeated. I will bow down gracefully and allow you to come into my home after I’ve screamed roared at you for 5 minutes straight. I will even allow the largest of enemies to pet my belly while I glare at them from under my long eyebrows. But the thunder‌ At least that’s what Mommy and Daddy call it: thunder. What a weird word. I am grateful I can’t speak English because I would embarrass them when I tell them that this “thunderâ€? they refer to is not what it is called. It is an enemy roaring from outside, so loudly that it sounds like it is coming from the sky. An enemy that is larger than a lion, larger than an elephant, and even larger than a whale. I’ve seen dogs bark at the thunder. My pen pal Ella does that, but she doesn’t understand what she’s doing. The enemy is coming towards us – don’t bark or he’ll know where you are! Silly Ella. The best thing to do is to hide in the closet. Or, if you can, try to walk underneath your mommy and daddy’s feet while they are walking. Or hide in the couch cushions – but be careful there! You may get sat on. Which I was not impressed about. I can hear this ‘thunder’ coming from miles away. I have to do my duty and warn Mommy – so I go and sit by her feet and nudge her a bunch of times. Then she assumes I want to go out (silly Mommy) and when she gets up, I walk in her feet – and refuse to leave the conďŹ nements of my house. When she still doesn’t understand, I pace nervously around the house. I run upstairs, downstairs, jump on the couch, jump o the couch, sit under the table, look outside‌ surely they must understand that I am trying to warn them about something! Then they hear it. And they look right at me. But I am gone. I am hiding. I warned them! I warned them that the enemy is coming!! Save yourselves – I AM! I hope the enemy gets her ďŹ rst. B

DOG TIRED

An older, tired-looking dog wandered into my yard; I could tell from his collar and well-fed belly that he had a home and was well taken care of. He calmly came over to me, I gave him a few pats on his head; he then followed me into my house, slowly walked down the hall, curled up in the corner and fell asleep. An hour later, he went to the door, and I let him out. The next day he was back, greeted me in my yard, walked inside and resumed his spot in the hall and again slept for about an hour. This continued off and on for several weeks. Curious I pinned a note to his collar, ‘I would like to find out who the owner of this wonderful sweet dog is and ask if you are aware that almost every afternoon your dog comes to my house for a nap.’ The next day he arrived for his nap, with a different note pinned to his collar, ‘He lives in a home with 6 children, 2 under the age of 3 and he’s trying to catch up on his sleep. Can I come with him tomorrow?’

Fall Clean Up's

MY Favourite, FABULOUS, FANTASTIC AND FUN STUFF

Hedge Trimming, Small Tree Pruning.

By: Kathryn Hartwell Now that summer is over and soon to be a distant memory, September is the month to mentally prepare for our long, dreary and maybe cold winter. I’m thinking, perhaps, because we had the warmest summer since I can remember in a long time, we may be in for a nasty winter this year – only time will tell. There is nothing more fabulous and fantastic to do when it’s cold outside but to stay inside and try out some new healthy comfort food. I really have never done much cooking with lentils, and they look so boring and uninteresting, but hey; nothing ventured, nothing gained. Everyone can benefit from eating lentils; they are high in fibre and complex carbohydrates, while low in fat and calories. They are naturally gluten-free and their exceptionally low glycemic index (low GI) values and resistant starch content make them suitable for a diabetic diet. Fibre - Just 100 grams of green lentils (uncooked) packs in a whole day’s worth of the fibre you need! High intake of fibre is associated with lower blood cholesterol levels and protection against developing colon cancer and Type 2 diabetes. Potassium - Just 100 grams of split red lentils (uncooked) has more potassium than a large banana! Potassium can counteract the damaging effect of sodium and has been shown to lower blood pressure. Foliate - Out of all plant-based foods, lentils contain the most foliate! A type of B-vitamin, foliate helps support red blood cell formation and proper nerve functions. In addition, this watersoluble vitamin may help prevent anemia and protect against developing heart disease, cancer, and dementia. Protein - A serving of lentils contains more protein than a serving of yogurt! A ¾ cup serving of lentils provides about 13 grams of protein. With such high protein content, lentils are regarded as a meat alternative in Canada’s Food Guide! Iron - Just 100 grams of lentils provides 50% of your daily iron needs! Iron plays an integral role in the formation of hemoglobin in blood and myoglobin in muscles, both of which carry oxygen to the cells. That’s why fatigue and tiredness are usually the first symptoms people notice when they are low in iron. Average adult women require double the daily amount of iron than men. For vegetarians, getting enough iron is particularly challenging. Manganese - Just 100 grams of red lentils provides 100% of your daily manganese needs! This mineral is stored mainly in our bones and in major organs including the liver, kidney, and pancreas. Manganese plays a role in maintaining normal blood sugar level, and helps protect against free-radical damage.

2 carrots, chopped, 2 celery stalks, chopped, 1 cup corn, canned or frozen, 2 cloves garlic, minced, 28 oz can tomatoes, chopped with juice, ½ tsp salt, ½ tsp pepper, 1 bay leaf Combine lentils, barley and beef broth in a large stock pot. Bring mixture to a boil, reduce heat and simmer covered for 30 minutes. In a non-stick skillet, sauté beef and onions over medium-high heat, breaking up with spoon until beef is no longer pink, about five minutes. Add to stockpot along with the remaining ingredients. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer covered 20 to 30 minutes, or until vegetables are tender, stirring occasionally. Remove bay leaf before serving.

Cheddar Lentil Snackies ½ cup margarine, 1 cup all-purpose flour, 1 cup rice crisp cereal ¾ cup cheddar cheese, grated, ¾ cup split red lentils, puréed*, 1 egg, beaten Preheat oven to 375° F. In a bowl, cut margarine into flour until mixture resembles coarse oatmeal. Stir in cereal, cheese and lentil purée. Add egg, mix well. Mold 1 tbsp amounts into finger shapes. Place on an ungreased backing sheets two inches apart. Bake for 15 minutes or until golden. Remove from oven and serve. *Lentil Purée - Place cooked or rinsed & drained canned lentils into a food processor. For every 1 cup lentils, add ¼ cup water. Blend to make a smooth purée with a consistency like canned pumpkin. If needed, add additional water 1 tbsp at a time. ~ Kathryn Hartwell

Dear Lifelines, My cousin mentioned to another relative that she felt I wasn’t successful. I feel that I am. Who’s right? Struggling with Success Dear Struggling; Thanks for your question and your further thoughts and comments on the matter. In the online dictionary (Dictionary.com), the term ‘success’ is defined in a couple of different ways. In one suggested definition ‘success’ is defined as, “The favourable or prosperous termination of attempts or endeavors,” whereas another meaning is, “The attainment of wealth, position, honours, or the like.” So depending on your own personal definition of what the goal is that you are attempting to attain (or ‘the like’ part of the definition), the definition of success will alter with each person. So what one person finds satisfying in life is not necessarily the same satisfying outcome that another person will be seeking. Some might measure wealth, property ownership, a career or belonging to a particular social class as success while others strive for happiness, a healthy family or world travel and experiences as success. No rules apply when it comes to success. It would be stifling of us to judge people and their experiences and goals as more or less successful as ourselves. It isn’t fair to compare when we are not dealing with the same value scale. In other words, we are all using different scales and measures unique to ourselves. It’s like the old saying of comparing apples to oranges – it just doesn’t compute. Your question about what constitutes success plagues many people, but in your case it seems that you really answered your own question. You mentioned that you believe that you are successful, so we could assume that you have reached that personal level of happiness, financial goal or successful family life that you were knowingly or unknowingly working towards. It sounds like you are satisfied with your life and your success Page 50

and that is really what matters. Thanks for making us contemplate this flexible and deeply personal concept of ‘success’. Sincerely, Lifelines ‘It’s incredibly easy to get caught up in an activity trap, in the busy-ness of life, to work harder and harder at climbing the ladder of success only to discover it’s leaning against the wrong wall.’ Stephen R. Covey “It’s impossible,” said pride. “It’s risky,” said experience. “It’s pointless,” said reason. “Give it a try,” said heart. In order to fly, you have to let go of the world that you’re hanging on to! What if I told you that raising your voice doesn’t improve your argument? It took me a long time not to judge myself through someone else’s eyes - Sally Field Strong people stand up for themselves. Stronger people stand up for others. Don’t waste time on negative people... the world is filled with so many beautiful souls who know the meaning of honesty, loyalty and friendship. Focus your attention on them. - Julia Turner Creation

What’s In The Bag?

Two Calgarians are walking down different ends of a street toward each other and one is carrying a sack. When they meet, one says, “Hey, Tommy, what’cha got in th’ bag?” “Jus’ some chickens.” “If I guess how many there are, can I have one?” “I’ll give you both of them.” “OK. Ummmmm... five?”

Simple Operation

A man was seen fleeing down the hall of the hospital just before his operation. “What’s the matter?” he was asked. He said, “I heard the nurse say, ‘It’s a very simple operation, don’t worry, I’m sure it will be all right.’” “She was just trying to comfort you, what’s so frightening about that?” “She wasn’t talking to me. She was talking to the doctor!” Page 52

Attention Strathmore Residents:

Just in case you think you are TC (technologically challenged), the following is an excerpt taken from a Wall Street Journal article: 1. Dell is considering changing the command “Press Any Key” to “Press Return Key” because of the flood of calls asking where the “Any” key is. 2. AST technical support had a caller complaining that her mouse was hard to control with the dust cover on. The cover turned out to be the plastic bag the mouse was packaged in. 3. Another Dell technician received a call from a man complaining that the system wouldn’t read word processing files from his old (5 1/4) diskettes. After trouble-shooting for magnets and heat failed to diagnose the problem, it was found that the customer had labeled the diskettes, and then rolled them into the typewriter to type the labels. 4. Another AST customer was asked to send a copy of her defective diskettes. A few days later a letter arrived from the customer along with photocopies of the floppies. 5. Yet another Dell customer called to complain that his keyboard no longer worked. He had cleaned it by filling up his tub with soap and water and soaking the keyboard for a day, then removing all the keys and washing them individually. 6. A Dell technician received a call from a customer who was enraged because his computer had told him he was “bad and an invalid”. The tech explained that the computer’s “bad command” and “invalid” responses shouldn’t be taken personally. 7. A confused caller to IBM was having troubles printing documents. He told the technician that the computer had said it “couldn’t find printer”. The user had even tried turning the computer screen to face the printer - but his computer still couldn’t “see” the printer. 8. An exasperated caller to Dell Computer Tech Support couldn’t get her new Dell Computer to turn on. After ensuring the computer was plugged in, the technician asked her what happened when she pushed the power button. Her response, “I pushed and pushed on this foot pedal and nothing happened.” The “foot pedal” turned out to be the computer’s mouse. 11. Another customer called Compaq tech support to say her brand-new computer wouldn’t work. She said she unpacked the unit, plugged it in and sat there for 20 minutes waiting for something to happen. When asked what happened when she pressed the power switch, she asked, “What power switch?” The Newsy Neighbour

Monthly Book Review by Derek Donais My review column is in its second year with the Newsy Neighbour. Please continue to join me each month as I explore a new read. I’ve had the opportunity to review worthwhile books by many local or regional Canadian authors, as well as some great international works. As always, my passions are fantasy and sciencefiction, but I am always on the lookout for more non-fiction, especially from local writers. I hope to build on the many bright spots and successes of 2011. MetalMagic: Talisman, the revised Canadian edition, was released in November, 2011 and I’m happy to announce that the sequel, MetalMagic: Revelation, should be available sometime in February, 2012. Thanks to all those who’ve supported the Newsy Neighbour and read my reviews over the last little while—and here’s to another year filled with promise! Yours in Truth, Derek Donais

The End of Growth

Jeff Rubin Random House Canada, 2012 ISBN: 9780307360892 At one time or another, we’ve all heard—or even said—that things will get better once the economy picks up again. Recessions have happened in the past and the world has always come out of them with increased economic growth, triggered by various events. Author Jeff Rubin doesn’t think we’ve recovered completely from the sub-prime mortgage crisis of 2008 and, what’s more, believes that we’re on the verge of an even greater recessionary period that will be sparked by the European Union’s debt situation. And this time, he states, the global economy is never going back to the way it was. In his book, The End of Growth, Rubin reasons that the underlying drive for economic growth that’s been hardwired into the minds of every modern financial player on earth was supported by a condition that no longer applies: the existence of cheap, accessible oil. The last recession was caused because interest rates were hiked to offset energy inflation, which in turn led thousands and thousands of homeowners to default on mortgage payments. Now, Rubin argues that the same rising energy prices are the real problem that is holding back the recovery of the housing market, as well as threatening to crush the global economy with another, even more serious recession. Very simply stated, Rubin’s point is that the energy we’ve relied on in the past is no longer cheap or easily accessible. It has become too expensive to sustain our present practices. And that means an end to the traditional idea of economic growth. Growth has been the ‘Holy Grail’ of modern society, either directly or indirectly motivating the activities of every working individual who contributes to his or her national economy. The increasing scarcity of energy resources and the difficulties with which they are extracted are the reasons we’re now going to the ends of the earth to exploit those reserves or are engaging in expensive refining processes to get at unconventional sources. We have come to a point where the demand is greater than our ability to provide an affordable supply. The emergence of new economic players such as China and India mean that the situation is only going to become more critical. Rubin admits that we may not run out of oil, natural gas or coal completely, but qualifies this acknowledgement by saying that the cost of obtaining them is going to mean that citizens of most nations will no longer be able to afford the fossil-fuel-based lifestyles they have come to enjoy. Rubin includes a few examples of adaptations that are already being incorporated by several countries in the face of this new economic reality. The Danish have embraced a much less carbon-centric existence because of their government’s use of cost deterrents. The Japanese have embarked on a policy of setsuden, or electricity conservation. And the Germans have begun to use job-sharing to cushion the impact of an economic downturn. Despite the stark message Rubin is sending about the end of the global economy as we know it, he does leave the reader with some hope that a satisfying and sustainable future is possible so long as we are willing to shift our attitudes and change our behaviour to embrace more sustainable economic activity in the future.

“The Arctic is, quite literally, the end of the earth. And that’s exactly where the energy industry is being forced to search for oil to keep the global economy humming.” Page 54

Tips for buyers

Carol Warawa, C.C.S, SRES REALTOR R

It’s all about location Whether you’re a first-time buyer, investor or existing homeowner, you need to understand the best locations for your investment. “Buying the smallest house on the best street versus the largest house on a less preferred street will reap big rewards when it comes time to sell.” As an investor, a condominium that is near public transit or a university is a good move.

tain a pre-approved mortgage before you start house hunting, Linda says. Once you know how much you can spend you can narrow down your choices. It’s safer to buy within your budget, no matter the economic situation.

Head out of the city Young families are heading there to buy affordable and newer resale homes. Sometimes it pays to go further afield depending on what you’re looking for. If you want more space and more property, but have a budget to stick to, a downtown location won’t do. You have to widen your circle of prospective locations.

Know your credit rating It’s best not to just assume your credit rating is in order. To avoid getting any surprises before you meet with a lender, check your rating first so you have time to resolve any issues that might stand in your way of buying.
