Where does inspiration come from? What inspires people to create something wonderful just for other people? What kind of person goes above and beyond to work day and night so they can share their inspiration with others? This is the way I feel about this incredible September Directory Issue!! Not only have we created an astounding “Directory” of businesses for you to keep at your fingertips but the creativity and design of this Issue is truly inspiring. I truly am the luckiest person in the world to be working alongside such a talented team of people to develop this amazing magazine (blowing my own horn here). You know you are doing something right when your business grows and expands every single year. In these days of uncertainty for Alberta and the world for that matter, I consider myself truly blessed. We all do here at “The Newsy” for the support and “highfives” we receive from all our advertisers and readers who go out of their way to tell us how much they enjoy and love our magazine. Some of the phone calls I receive are truly humbling! I’ve said this in the past and most probably will say it again in the future – but this issue is a keeper, which by the way, I understand that we have more than a few followers who have told me they have “every single Newsy Neighbour we have ever published”. I wonder how many magazines can say that? Enjoy the stories, really good articles and lots of humour and most of all take the time for YOU to just enjoy your day because every single day is a gift. FOODS TO BOOST YOUR BRAINPOWER
Food & Drink
Opt for whole grains
We Offer...
Like everything else in your body, the brain cannot work without energy. The ability to concentrate and focus comes from the adequate, steady supply of energy - in the form of glucose in our blood to the brain. Achieve this by choosing whole grains, which release glucose slowly into the bloodstream, keeping you mentally alert throughout the day. Opt for 'brown' cereals, wheat bran, granary bread and brown pasta.
Full Service Meat Department Deli, Bakery, Produce, ATM, Lotto. Wide selection of products including Gluten free
Eat Oily Fish
Essential fatty acids (EFAs) cannot be made by the body and must be obtained through diet. The most effective omega-3 fats occur naturally in oily fish. Good sources include linseed (flaxseed) oil, soya bean oil, pumpkin seeds, walnut oil and soya beans. They are good for healthy brain function, the heart, joints and general wellbeing. The main sources of oily fish include salmon, trout, mackerel, herring, sardines, pilchards and kippers.

Eat More Tomatoes
There is good evidence to suggest that lycopene, a powerful antioxidant found in tomatoes, could help protect against the kind of free radical damage to cells which occurs in the development of dementia, particularly Alzheimer's.
Food for the body is not enough. There must be food for the soul. - Dorothy Day
Add Vitality With Vitamins
Certain B vitamins - B6, B12 and folic acid - are known to reduce levels of homocysteine in the blood. Elevated levels of homocysteine are associated with increased risk of stroke, cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease.

Vitamin C has long been thought to have the power to increase mental agility. One of the best sources of this vital vitamin are blackcurrants.
Pick Up Pumpkin Seeds
Just a handful of pumpkin seeds a day are all you need to get your recommended daily amount of zinc, vital for enhancing memory and thinking skills.
Bet On Broccoli
A great source of vitamin K, which is known to enhance cognitive function and improve brainpower.
Go Nuts
Nuts are a great source of vitamin E along with leafy green vegetables, asparagus, olives, seeds, eggs, brown rice and whole grains.

THIS IS WHAT I DID:
HOMEMADE ROASTED CHICKPEAS
Heat the oven to 400°F: Place an oven rack in the middle of the oven. Rinse and drain the chickpeas: Open the cans of chickpeas and pour the chickpeas into a strainer in the sink. Rinse thoroughly under running water. Dry the chickpeas: Pat the chickpeas very dry with a clean dishtowel or paper towels. They should look matte and feel dry to the touch; if you have time, leave them to air-dry for a few minutes. Remove any chickpea skins that come off while drying, but otherwise don’t worry about them. I used a can of Chickpeas and a can of Fava beans as an experiment to see if I could use this baking process on all sorts of different canned beans.
I’m a sucker for a bargain and on my last grocery shopping spree I noticed they had a 10 for $10.00 deal on the “BIG” can of chickpeas. When I got them home, my husband asked, “What on earth are you going to do with 10 cans of chickpeas?” I told him I wasn’t sure but I’m sure there are lots of recipes I could find to use them. Besides they are very good for you; we could add them to salads or soups, or make hummus out of them. I knew I would find lots of other ways in which we could use them. After doing some research, I found that one-half cup of cooked chickpeas has barely a trace of fat, yet provides 7 grams of protein and 22 grams of energy-providing complex carbohydrates. Chickpeas are a rich source of iron, giving men 25 percent of their recommended daily intake, while women get 11 percent. You’ll also gain bone-building calcium and phosphorus and the potassium you need to keep nerves and muscles functioning. Chickpeas have 3 to 8 percent of the recommended daily intake of the B vitamins essential for energy. The same serving also has 35 percent of the recommended daily intake of folate, which is essential for the synthesis of genetic material and the creation of normal red blood cells. On my quest for other recipes in which I could use the chickpeas, I was delighted to find that you could bake them and make them into healthy little snacks. The recipe could not be any easier
Toss the chickpeas with olive oil and salt: Spread the chickpeas out in an even layer on the baking sheet. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt. Stir with your hands or a spatula to make sure they are evenly coated. Roast the chickpeas in the oven for 20 to 30 minutes: Stir the chickpeas or shake the pan every 10 minutes. A few chickpeas may pop – that’s normal. The chickpeas are done when golden and slightly darkened, dry and crispy on the outside, and soft in the middle.
THIS IS WHAT YOU NEED:

Toss the chickpeas with the spices: Sprinkle with 2 to 4 teaspoons of finely chopped fresh herbs or chili powder, curry powder, cumin, smoked paprika, rosemary, thyme, or other favourite spices and herbs. I used garlic and onion powder.

Now this was the first kick at the cat for experimenting with making Roasted Chickpeas and they turned out perfectly. My daughter came over for a visit and ate the whole bowl. I guess that means they were truly a success. Now I know how I can use up 10 cans of Chickpeas and I will probably buy another 10 next time they go on sale. I also thought I should share these Tips for Roasted Chickpea Success: First, dry the chickpeas as much as possible I rolled mine between two clean dishtowels. Also, don’t skimp on the olive oil--the more you use, the crispier your chickpeas will be. Lastly, wait to toss the chickpeas with any spices or seasonings until you pull them out of the oven, otherwise the spices have a tendency to burn and become bitter. I just used the extra virgin olive oil and Himalayan salt to bake them. These little lovelies don’t stay as crispy once they cool, so I recommend eating them while they’re still warm for optimal crunchiness. This said, once they cool, they become intensely nutty and addictively chewy. (Ask my daughter).
Have fun with this, they are so easy it’s incredible. Also use your imagination and use different herbs and spices with each batch you make. Next time I’m going to try spicy chili powder or curry powder. Eat them hot! Kathryn Hartwell

But there is an upside to all this melancholy; I will get to make my most favourite and healthy salt and vinegar zucchini chips. This may be the easiest recipe you have every made! All you need is your wonderful fresh zucchini (as much as you wish to slice), sea salt (I always use Pink Himalayan) and your favourite vinegar. You can use apple cider vinegar, white wine or rice vinegar—any white type or even flavoured vinegar – just not red.

Slice your zucchini into thin rounds (about 1/8th inch thick). Then soak or toss in your vinegar and sprinkle the salt (as desired) on the chips. Bake at the lowest temperature possible until crisp and wonderful. Check them often, as I have found once they start to get crispy, they can go from crispy to overdone very quickly. Not only are these chips delicious, but also healthy since zucchini is an excellent source of two antioxidant vitamins that help boost immunity and support healthy aging, vitamin C and vitamin A and also quite a bit of potassium. Potassium can help control blood pressure because it lessens the harmful effects of salt on your body. Studies suggest boosting your potassium intake (while also curbing sodium) can slash your stroke risk and may also lower your odds of developing

5 POWERFUL ANTIBIOTICS THAT DON’T REQUIRE A PRESCRIPTION Antibiotics have become one of the most over-prescribed “medicines” today. As a result,
people have ruined their digestive systems, and ironically, have lowered their natural immunity to all types of infections. Get rid of infections, without the digestive destruction, with these five powerful natural antibiotics.

Colloidal Silver
Colloidal silver has been known as an effective antibiotic for centuries. In the early 1900s, Alfred Searle, founder of the Searle pharmaceutical company, discovered that it could kill the most deadly pathogens. Searle stated that applying colloidal silver to human subjects has been done in a large number of cases with astonishing results. The main advantage was that it was rapidly fatal to microbes without toxic action on its host.

Oil of oregano takes care of pathogenic bacteria without disrupting beneficial bacteria. It is also antiviral and antifungal, which makes it a powerful three-in-one combination that rivals pharmaceuticals while not encouraging antibiotic resistance. The key antimicrobial ingredient in oil of oregano is carvacrol. You should ensure that your source is at least 70 percent carvacrol content in order to be effective.
Echinacea
Manuka Honey
Perhaps the most palatable antibiotic comes in the form of manuka honey. Applied topically, it can kill a wide range of pathogens, including MRSA and flesh eating bacteria. It was also found that the treated bacteria did not build up any resistance, which would eventually render manuka honey ineffective. This is certainly not an exhaustive list of natural antibiotics, but a great start for an all-natural pharmacy. Also consider reishi, pau d’arco, una de gato, olive leaf extract, cloves, turmeric, and even lemons to round out your antibiotic arsenal. Oil of Oregano
Echinacea has been used to treat a wide variety of infections for hundreds of years. Traditionally, it was used to treat open wounds, diphtheria, blood poisoning, and other bacterial related illnesses. Today, this potent herb is used mostly for colds and flu, due to its ability to destroy the most dangerous forms of bacteria such as staphylococcus aureus, which causes deadly MRSA.

AMAZING!
Garlic has been used medicinally by cultures around the world for thousands of years. In fact, it was used in the 1700s to ward off plague. Garlic possesses potent antibiotic, antiviral, antifungal, and antimicrobial properties and is able to help protect and facilitate removal of unfriendly bacteria. It is also very high in natural antioxidants that destroy free radicals, which also supports a strong immune system. The active ingredient in garlic, allicin, is the key component to killing and warding off harmful bacteria. Crush it to activate these compounds, and eat it raw, in a warm tea, or in lightly cooked food.

CLASSIC CRAB CAKES
Luscio u Joys s I love watching cooking shows. The truth is, I never used to watch them. Then I found myself channel surfing, trying to find an interesting show to watch instead of all the garbage and news channels, and found myself watching the cooking channel. Diners, Drive-ins and Dives can be fun and I love all the different cities Guy visits. But what I like the best is all the different cooking ideas I get from watching these shows. Like, whoever would have thought to add pineapple to coleslaw or to make your own garlic mayonnaise? I have learned a ton of different recipes when it comes to cooking seafood. I LOVE SEAFOOD and it just might be one of those foods I could eat each and every day. Now, I do also know that it can be very expensive. So I thought in this Luscious Joys I would share with you some ways in which you can have your fish and eat it too! Sometimes the canned stuff can be just as good; well, not really, but when you just cannot bring yourself to lay out the cash for fresh, you can still enjoy your seafood. All these recipes are quick and easy and perfect for when you get that desire for seafood. This first one is one of my very favourite dishes because I absolutely LOVE crab and you do not have to deal with all the work of cracking the shells but still enjoy the flavour of delicious crab.
8 oz canned lump crab meat 1/4 cup finely chopped celery 1/4 cup finely chopped onion 1/2 small clove garlic, finely minced 1 tsp garlic powder 1 tbsp finely chopped red bell pepper 1 egg 2 tbsp mayonnaise 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce 1 cup soft bread crumbs 1 tsp Creole seasoning 4 tbsp butter Pea Shoots Fresh Grapefruit Drain crab meat trying to leave lumps as large as possible. Heat 2 tablespoons butter in a large skillet over low heat; slowly sauté finely diced onion, celery, red pepper, and garlic until tender. Whisk egg in bowl, add mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, and Creole seasoning. Combine with sautéed vegetables and soft bread crumbs, mixing well. Add the crab meat and form into loose patties; place on waxed paper-lined plate. Refrigerate for about 1 hour, or until firm, heat remaining 4 tablespoons butter in large skillet over medium-low heat. Gently place crab cakes in skillet and cook for about 5 minutes. Turn and cook for 4 to 5 minutes longer, until cooked through. Slice your grapefruit and lay the grapefruit and pea shoots on top of your crab cakes. Serve with a remoulade sauce or tartar sauce.

6 oz. cream cheese, softened 1 cup sour cream 1 tbsp chopped green onion few drops hot sauce (to your taste) 1/2 tsp paprika 1 envelope Ranch Dressing mix Salt and black pepper, to taste 6 to 8 ounces crab meat, drained and chopped Beat cream cheese with sour cream until well blended. Blend in the green onion, hot sauce, paprika, dressing mix. Stir in crab. Taste and adjust seasonings with salt and pepper, if desired. Chill until serving time or heat in a 350°F oven to serve hot.
Now, if you do not like the classic seafood, there are at least a million different canned salmon recipes and salmon is sooo good for you. It is an excellent source of vitamin B12, vitamin D and selenium. It is a good source of niacin, omega-3 fatty acids, protein, phosphorus and vitamin B6. It is also a good source of choline, pantothenic acid, biotin and potassium.

Boil the macaroni pasta by bringing a pot of water (2 quarts) to a boil. Add 1 tbsp salt. Add the dry macaroni pasta and cook, uncovered, in a rolling boil for about 10 minutes, or until the macaroni is al dente (slightly firm). Remove from heat, drain, rinse briefly in cold water (macaroni should be still warm after rinsing) and drain again. Mix salmon, mayonnaise, mustard, lemon zest, and lemon juice in a large bowl. Mix in the shallots, parsley, dill, and celery. Stir in drained, warm macaroni, mix while it is still warm. Add Tabasco and freshly ground black pepper to taste. As the macaroni absorbs the mayonnaise, you may need to add some water to the salad to keep it from being dry. Adjust seasonings. Chill before serving. This is so easy and so good you’re going to love it.

Hearing is one of the body's five senses. But listening is an art. ~ Frank Tyger
Boil the potatoes until tender and drain. While potatoes are cooling, sauté red peppers and onions until tender. Gently stir in potatoes and salmon; set aside and keep warm. Poach or fry eggs (over-easy method). Divide salmon-potato-pepper mixture on two plates and top each with an egg add salt to taste.

New studies have health professionals debating over previous theories which claim salt is bad for the heart. Of course, as with most things, the adage "all things in moderation" rings true. It is an established fact that salt is essential to the body, performing the function of turning carbohydrates to fat, ridding the body of carbon dioxide and is necessary for heart and muscle contractions. Salt is necessary for the body to produce digestive acids, stimulate the liver and helps get rid of gas. There are so many different types of salt appearing on the shelves, I wondered to myself if sea salt is better for you than the conventional table salt, so I did some research. Sea salt is produced through evaporation of seawater, usually with little processing, which leaves behind certain trace minerals and elements depending on its water source. Table salt is mined from underground salt deposits. Table salt is more heavily processed to eliminate minerals and usually contains an additive to prevent clumping. By weight, sea salt and table salt contain the same amount of sodium chloride. Your body needs only a very tiny amount of salt to stay healthy. Most people get far too much — mostly from processed foods. So regardless of which type of salt you prefer, use a light hand with the saltshaker. Dr. David Brownstein, author of Salt Your Way to Health, advocates using pure, unrefined salt. He is keen on restoring iodine levels in our thyroids for better overall endocrine health. Besides containing iodine, pure sea salt is a factor for better iodine absorption from other sources. Sea salt also contains potassium, which is vital for regulating pH balance along with sodium and chloride. Yes, untainted sodium chloride is vital for health. Chloride also contributes to creating digestive acids. Pure salt contains magnesium, the master mineral that is involved with over 300 cellular metabolic actions. Sulfur and other nutrients are in sea salt as well. It makes sense to me that unprocessed sea salt would contain minerals that table salt would not have and I find it tastes better; less salty, if that makes any sense. Try both and decide for yourself; but I would personally say perhaps the sea salt may be better for you. And to add a little spice (hehe) to your life, I have included a recipe to make your own seasoning salt. This is a basic recipe and really you could put your own spin on this by adding your own favourite herbs and spices; use your imagination and have a spicy time!
Homemade Seasoning salt
Ingredients: 6 tablespoons salt 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme leaves 1/2 teaspoon marjoram 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt or garlic powder 2 1/4 teaspoons paprika 1/4 teaspoon curry powder 1 teaspoon dry mustard 1/4 teaspoon onion powder 1/8 teaspoon dill weed 1/2 teaspoon celery salt Preparation: Put all ingredients into a mini food processor or small blender container and blend on low.

YOUR CHILD’S FIRST DENTAL VISIT Dental problems don’t wait for adulthood – they can strike at any age, even causing problems for toddlers and preschoolers. Dental Decay and Gum Inflammation can impact mouths of all ages, so don’t put-off bringing your child to the dentist. The First Dental Visit Nobody feels good when they have a toothache – but imagine being in discomfort and having to go to the dentist for the very first time! Delaying an initial dental exam not only prevents health issues being diagnosed early, but it may lead to your child having to see the dentist under stressful conditions, when they (child) are in pain. It’s so much easier to deal with dental problems and treatment when a relationship has already been formed with the dental team and a child has developed a level of trust – and the best time to develop this trust is during a happy visit – when everyone gets to relax. Even though your child may not have any dental concerns, if they’re over the age of 3 and haven’t seen a dentist yet, it’s time to setup an appointment. What Happens at a First Dental Visit? We encourages parents to bring children to the dentist within 6 months of the first tooth erupting or no later than the age of 3. A child’s first dental appointment should be fun, easy and full of laughs so that future visits are looked forward to and a lifetime of good oral health is begun. Talking positively to your child about the dentist and how important it is to have their teeth checked will help prime a young child for having a dental professional look in their mouth. Playing dentist is one of the best ways to get your child used to the idea of mirrors, gloves and opening really wide – letting them be the dentist and clean your teeth can be all it takes to get them feeling good about a dental visit. Unfortunately, the Tooth Fairy has made a good income from rotten baby teeth. Giving your child the best dental health means bringing them to the dentist early and regularly so that healthy habits are formed. Langdon Dental

MEDITATION HEARING CLINIC
FITNESS
I don’t know if you have noticed lately, but if you watch Dr. Oz, The Doctors or Oprah’s Life Lessons, everyone seems to be talking about ‘Meditation’. I have tak-
en a couple stabs at it over the years and can never stay committed, but I’m thinking I may give it another try. Meditation is the art of silencing the mind. When the mind is silent, concentration is increased and we experience inner peace in the midst of every day stress. This elusive inner peace is what attracts so many people to meditation and is something everyone can benefit from. These are some of the benefits of meditation: Improved concentration. A clear mind makes you more productive, especially in creative disciplines like writing.

Less bothered by little things. Do you sometimes allow yourself to get upset by little things? It is the nature of the mind to magnify small things into serious problems. Meditation helps us detach. We learn to live in the here and now, rather than worrying about the past or future. We do not worry about meaningless things, but see the bigger picture. Better Health. There have been numerous studies pointing to the health benefits of meditation. The reason is that meditation reduces stress levels and alleviates anxiety. If we can reduce stress, many health benefits follow. Knowledge of Self. Meditation enables us to have

a deeper understanding of our inner self. Through meditation, we can gain a better understanding of our life’s purpose. The great thing about meditation is that our philosophy/religious belief is not important. Meditation is about consciousness. The beliefs of the mind become trivial. We dive deep into the heart of the matter to gain access to our soul – our inner reality. Therefore, mediation can (and is) practiced by people of different religions or no religion. Many people like the idea of meditation, but feel they don’t have enough time. When you really want to do something, you can find time. Get up earlier or watch 30 minutes less TV. Meditation requires an investment of time, but clearing the mind makes the rest of the day more productive. Nothing is better than the feeling of inner peace. What is the point in being tremendously busy but unable to enjoy it? Meditation is not about retreating from the world; it gives us inspiration. Whatever you do, if you have peace of mind, your work will be more enjoyable and productive. Like anything worthwhile, meditation requires practice. To get the most from meditation, you need to do it every day. This requires a place and time where you will not be disturbed. Sit with a straight back. Don’t try to meditate lying down because you are likely to fall asleep. Meditation brings relaxation and peace but at the same time this is a dynamic peace. Meditation is quite different than the relaxation of sleep. When we really meditate, we are fully alert and conscious. Our sense of awareness is heightened. Afterwards you’ll have a positive feeling for the world and a renewed sense of dynamism. Don’t eat before meditating. After a heavy meal your body will be lethargic with digestion. It is not necessary to mediate in the lotus posture. It is fine to meditate in a chair, as long as the back is straight. Burning incense and having a candle are not necessary, but they can add a little extra inspiration. It is good to meditate early in the morning. However you learn to meditate, you must learn to concentrate on one thing at a time. Usually, the mind tries to hold several different thoughts and ideas at once. When you sit down to meditate for the first time, you realize how cluttered the mind is. Mediation teachers have described the mind as a “mad monkey”. However, the mind can be tamed and forced to concenThe Newsy Neighbour Magazine

When you get distracted, go back to focusing on the candle flame. The important thing is that you concentrate only on one thing at a time. Another way to learn concentration is through the use of mantra. A mantra is the repetition of a sacred word. For example, you might repeat the mantra ‘AUM’ a certain number of times. Repeating a mantra forces the mind to focus on a single thought. After you’ve practiced concentration and learned to focus on one thing at a time, you can proceed to the next stage: no thought at all. Achieving a silent mind is difficult, but when you attain it, the experience is powerful. Try to view your thoughts as separate from yourself. When a thought appears, make a conscious decision to throw it out of your mind. Over time you realize that you are capable of allowing or rejecting thoughts. Your real “I” is not a collection of thoughts, but something far deeper. This is the most significant realization of meditation – that you do not have to be a slave to your thoughts. Through meditation, you attain the power to control your thoughts, and on occasion stop them completely. Don’t be discouraged if you can’t attain a silent mind straightaway. It takes time and practice. There is nothing really else to it; meditation is a simple and spontaneous action. Unfortunately, our mind is used to complication and it takes time to unlearn bad habits. Have fun with it and realize anything worthwhile takes time! Kathryn Hartwell

We are currently living in one of the most exciting and disturbing times in history. The information age
that we are witnessing is one that will forever be remembered. A history lesson being written for our future generations. Not only are we able to communicate instantly, we are now able to communicate with the entire world. With the platforms that social media and the internet provide we can witness and participate in the best and worst that this world has to offer. These medias can be use to uplift humanity, share the most worthy causes, educate the ignorant, and sway the way nations think, believe and act. This same power is easily and often abused. These powerful formats can also be used to further ignorant belief systems, to market fear and propaganda, to be

What is it that you think about? What is it that you react to? There are so many topics that have such value and merit to be spoken about, defended, brought to the light...
The aspect of our mind that stays in fear, anger, judgement and denial is related closely to our ego. Now ego plays an important role in defining our sense of self, but it also (falsely) strives to play a role in what we perceive as truth and untruth – and this is where strife between parties can be seen. When it comes to elevating consciousness (beginning with our own self first, of course) it is essential to recognize this “ego voice” within ourselves and others. When we are aware of the ego and strive to be mindful in how we both perceive and communicate with the world, we elevate our ability to communicate in any situation.

What we say, do and act like in our lives impacts our own life and those around us. What we say, do and act like on social media and the internet will impact the world in much the same way. What we choose to stay silent upon is telling as well.
What do I want to say about this then? I am here to call you to think right.
This 6 week series will build the foundation for your practice. Spend plenty of time learning the basic breathing and postures.

Here in Canada, and many other developed nations, we are so advanced in our blessings that the majority of us have access to the things that we need. Food, water, shelter, clothing, health care are available to almost everyone that live in Canada. It is because of this safety that we are able as a nation and individuals to rise up, and begin to shift into higher consciousness, to speak and influence issues that may not be related to survival, but yet are massively important. Wound between (and sometimes hidden in) the funny memes and cute cat videos are ideas about the world. I speak of issues like gender and race equality, politics, social issues like body shaming and mental illness and so many many more.
I am not here to tell you what to think about any one of them.

torical figures that are worthy of our admiration have all had the same message for the world: Place your heart upon the highest possible call-to-action that has ever been placed upon humanity, that of unconditional love, and strive to live that in every part of your life. If every interaction we had, including those on social media platforms, was done in this energy we would transform the way media works. It would transform the world. Understand the power of our individual influence upon the tides of social media. What we post, like, comment and ignore are contributing to a greater current. If a greater portion of the population strive to learn and live two things: learning to observe and discern while recognizing our ego's pull on our senses and also to try to make every act one of unconditional love – we will wrest the tide to the good.

Two Sisters
Two sisters, one blonde and one brunette, inherit the family ranch. Unfortunately, after just a few years, they are in financial trouble. In order to keep the bank from repossessing the ranch, they need to purchase a bull so that they can breed their own stock. The brunette balances their chequebook, and then takes their last $600 out west to where a man has a prized bull for sale. Upon leaving, she tells her sister, "When I get there, if I decide to buy the bull, I'll contact you to drive out after me and haul it home." The brunette arrives at the man's ranch, inspects the bull and decides she does want to buy it. The man tells her that he can sell it for $599, no less. After paying him, she drives to the nearest town to send her sister a telegram to tell her the news. She walks into the telegraph office, and says, "I want to send a telegram to my sister telling her that I've bought a bull for our ranch. I need her to hitch the trailer to our pick-up truck and drive out here so we can haul it home." The telegraph operator explains that he'll be glad to help then adds, "It's just 99 cents a word". Well, after paying for the bull, the brunette only has $1 left. She realizes that he'll only be able to send her sister one word. After thinking for a few minutes, she nods, and says, "I want you to send her the word, 'comfortable'. The telegraph operator shakes his head. "How is she ever going to know that you want her to hitch the trailer to your pick-up and drive out here to haul that bull back to your ranch if you send her the word, 'comfortable'?" The brunette explains, "My sister is blonde. She'll read it slowly."
“I’m going back to school. He’s getting me there.” “My dad used to really dislike going to school. He said it was a struggle to follow along. That’s why he brought me to FYidoctors for a back to school eye exam. He ended up becoming an engineer. I want to be a pilot. He’s going to help me soar.”

Bob, a 70-year-old, extremely wealthy widower, showed up at the Country Club with a breathtakingly beautiful and very sexy 25-year-old blonde-haired woman who knocked everyone's socks off with her youthful sex appeal and charm. She hung onto Bob’s arm and listened intently to his every word. His buddies at the club are all aghast. At their very first chance, they cornered him and asked, “Bob, how’d you get the trophy girlfriend?” Bob replied, “Girlfriend? She's my wife!” They’re knocked over, but continue to ask: “So, how'd you persuade her to marry you?” “I lied about my age,” Bob replied. “What? Did you tell her you were only 50?” Bob smiled and said, “No, I told her I was 90.”
Dangerous Food
A doctor was addressing a large audience in Calgary. “The material we put into our stomachs is enough to have killed most of us sitting here, years ago. Red meat is awful. Soft drinks corrode your stomach lining. Chinese food is loaded with MSG. High fat diets can be disastrous, and none of us realizes the long-term harm caused by the germs in our drinking water. However, there is one thing that’s the most dangerous of all and we all have eaten, or will eat it. Can anyone here tell me what food it is that causes the most grief and suffering for years after eating it?” After several seconds of quiet, a 75-year-old man in the front row raised his hand, and softly said, “Wedding Cake.”
Sometimes I wake up grumpy; other times I let her sleep. If tomatoes are technically a fruit, is ketchup a smoothie? No matter how hard you push the envelope, it'll still be stationery.

THE CHRONICLES OF LARRY AND ROGER A Pair of Diabetic Feet
DECADENT CHOCOLATE CAKE Hello, Larry here! Man, oh man! Roger and I are truly LOVING our FITBIT! It keeps us on track and is changing how we live our lives!!! Yep, stairs instead of elevators or escalators, parking at the end of the parking lot to get those extra steps in, making sure we get that daily 20 minute walk in… it has been fabulous. Sometimes we meet or exceed our ten thousand steps (4.5 miles) per day, and sometimes we don’t, but we are sure changing our health and our human is loving what is happening. Look at our picture, we are slimming down and trimming up, and so is our human. We feel the strength, we feel pride, and we feel happy. How about you? It is September, and fall is in the air. I remember the day I woke up and said “Something has changed; fall is here.” That day always comes earlier than I would like; this year it was August 16th, I believe. But after the shock, reality is delightful. I love those fall days… cool in the morning, a crispness settles in, colours start to change, the garden has to be harvested. How truly delightful.
2016-2017 Directory Issue
Comfort food becomes the theme of fall as we move toward the winter months. Fall squash, potatoes and soups replace the salads of summer. We have some friends at Sagewood that have stated that seeing some great recipes on our chronicles may be fun. So we researched DIABETIC DECADENCE. What is more decadent than chocolate? We found and tried a delightful chocolate cake recipe on the Mayo Clinic Website. And we are so thrilled with it that we have decided to share it. If you love chocolate and want to do it healthy, give it a try. DIABETIC OR NOT! I dare you! You have nothing to lose besides calories and sugar!
DECADENT CHOCOLATE CAKE
By the Mayo Clinic Staff Dietitian's tip: Limiting the added sugar and fats makes this dessert lower in calories than most chocolate cakes.
1 1/2 cup whole-wheat pastry flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt 2 teaspoons chia seeds 2 tablespoons water 2 ounces unsweetened dark chocolate 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened 2 tablespoons roasted mashed yam 1/4 cup brown sugar, lightly packed 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce 1/4 cup honey 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla 1/2 cup plain fat-free Greek yogurt 1/2 cup boiling water For topping: 2 ounces melted dark chocolate bar 12 ounces strawberries, sliced thin 2 teaspoons of cinnamon)
Heat oven to 375°F. Spray a 9-inch round cake pan with cooking spray and flour lightly. In a large bowl, sift the flour, baking soda and salt together. Set aside. In a small bowl, mix chia seeds with water and set aside to gel. Slowly melt unsweetened dark chocolate and then allow it to cool slightly. Be careful not to allow it to harden. In a large bowl, beat butter with yams, brown sugar, applesauce and honey for 2 minutes. Add chia gel and beat for an additional 2 minutes. Beat in vanilla and then chocolate. Gradually stir in half the flour mixture and then half the yogurt. Repeat with the remaining flour mixture and yogurt. Slowly and carefully stir in the boiling water. Pour the batter into cake pan. Bake for about 20 minutes. Test cake with a toothpick — it should come out wet but not gooey. Do not over bake. Cool in pan on a rack for 20 minutes. Remove cake from pan and cut into 12 pieces. Melt chocolate bar, drizzle over cake. Place on plates and garnish with strawberries and cinnamon. When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day is not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and two cups of coffee. A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and filled it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was. The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured it into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls.

He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else.
#1 - 128 3rd Ave. Strathmore, AB
He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with an unanimous “YES”. The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed. “Now,” said the professor, as the laughter subsided, “I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things - God, family, children, health, friends, and favourite passions. Things, that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the things that matter like your job, house, and car. The sand is everything else - the small stuff.” “If you put the sand into the jar first,” he continued. “There is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you...”“So...

Spend time with good friends. There will always be time to clean the house and fix the dripping tap. Take care of the golf balls first - the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.” One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented. The professor smiled and said, “I'm glad you asked. It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend.” Source: http://www.michaelppowers.com/prosperity/mayonnaise.html facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

HELP MANAGE SCHOOL STRESS
SunRise Healing Center
Another school year is just around the corner. For some, it can be a stressful time as it is usually full of firsts; first day of school, a new school, finding new friends or starting a new grade. Stress

can cause many disorders for both parents and students such as not sleeping, headaches, and eating too much or not enough and for some it can even lead to anxiety or panic attacks.
403-934-6416 www.sunrisehealingcenter.com
There are steps that both parents and students can take to reduce the stress. First, it is important to remember that stress is a choice - not a condition. We can choose to stay calm or get upset about the situations we are in. When we recognize that the idea of starting school is just a normal part of life and of growing up, we can handle it better. Try not to assume the worse or imagine things that probably won’t even happen. There is no reason the new school, next grade or new friends won’t be better than before. Take specific actions as these will provide a feeling of being in control:

Here are some quick tips to help with the physical side of stress: 1. Take a deep breath in and out slowly. Give yourself a timeout from the situation. Clear your mind and thoughts by taking a walk, listening to music or doing an activity that calms you. 2. head; breathe while doing this exercise. 3. Massage and self-massage can also help relax the mind, body and soul making life feel a lot easier to handle. 4. If you suffer from anxiety or panic attacks, here is a self-help method through self-acupressure points and positive affirmations. During an anxiety or panic attack, concentrate on breathing slowly and deeply while you hold the middle of the inside of the forearm, three finger-widths above the wrist crease (these point helps relives nausea, anxiety, racing heartbeat, and wrist pain; it is also known to balance the inner being). Another good acupressure point is place your finger on the center of your breastbone, take a deep breath in and out slowly while holding this point for a few minutes. This point activates the thymus gland and is especially good for counteraction anxiety, nervousness, panic, anguish, hysteria, and other emotional imbalances. Another point, hold the upper outer chest area on both sides using three fingers below the collarbone. Hold these points firmly for a few minutes, while taking a deep breathe in and out slowly - this can instantly calm an attack. Here are some affirmations to counteract anxiety or panic attacks: “I let go of my expectations. I trust that I will be taken care of. I am at peace with myself in the present moment. I consciously breathe deeply and let go of any anxiety. I am safe and let go of what the future may bring.” I hope that these tips and points will help make this upcoming school year more fun and manageable; and remember, before you know it, another year will be over! 1902 debuted a production-line manufacturing system at his Oldsmobile factory in Michigan, USA. The Henry Ford's Model T car, introduced in 1908, is often regarded as the most famous of all early automobiles. It was the first car to become publically affordable, especially after Ford massively improved the production-line manufacturing system. In 1914, Ford created a production-line system that focused on synchronization, precision, and specialization. Ford's cars came off the line much faster than previous methods (from 12.5 man-hours down to just 1.5), which increased productivity, yet used less manpower. By assigning each worker a specified area rather than allowing them to roam about, injuries were dramatically reduced.

THE HISTORY OF VEHICLES Over the years, I have owned many, many vehicles. My first car was a 1967 Chevy Malibu. I have also owned a 1976 Trans Am, a Camaro Z28 and a 1999 Jaguar XJ8. What can I say, I like fast cars! Now I drive my Big White Hemi Dodge Ram Truck. Can you believe that the Benz Patent-Motorwagen is believed to be the first modern automobile? It was built in 1886 by German inventor Carl Benz. In August 1888, Carl Benz's wife, Bertha Benz, became the first person to drive a car over a long distance. With-

Now, have you heard that Google has developed a driverless car? The vehicles look cute but hardly impact-resistant, and they have a top speed of only 25 miles per hour. Google still has significant work to do before its software can handle all the situations a human driver can. “There’s going to be an enormous market for small autonomous vehicles,” says Gary Silberg, an auto industry analyst at the consulting firm KPMG. He cites city centers, airports, campuses, and amusement parks as places where vehicles, much like those Google is just starting to test could fit in. Google said that the new design will be unleashed on the roads of the company’s hometown of Mountain View, California, this summer. Eventually, up to 100 vehicles will roam the town’s suburban streets. These cars are expected to be available commercially around the year 2020. Can you imagine seeing a car driving down the street empty? That would be just too weird and it sounds like it really is going to happen! What is this world coming to? Just give them another 20 years and we will have flying cars – it could happen! Drive safely out there and may something wonderful happen for you today! Kathryn Hartwell

2016-2017 Directory Issue "You need great communication," says Stampeder head coach Dave Dickenson. "Every guy on the same page. They can blitz, they can outnumber you, but Bo is very good at reading those situations. We sacrifice extra passing yards as we leave our running backs in to help. We want our quarterback to be up right as much as possible." Another key to the team's success is discipline. In a flag happy first half, the Stampeders were the least penalized team. "That's something we've always stressed," says Dickenson. "I get very frustrated with offside penalties and penalties on special teams but in general we have been very good." Another factor for the Calgary Stampeders is their overall team depth. Corner Tommie Campbell won a job out of training camp and S24-year-old Ciante Evans displaced Fred Bennett midway through the first half. Bennett was traded to the Riders along with national DB Jeff Hecht and the organization cleared up much needed salary cap space. "I really thought we needed to get younger in the offseason, especially in the secondary," says Dickenson. "I knew our defense would have to step up in the first half and they have done a great job."
The Calgary Stampeders are the class of the

league. The Saskatchewan Rough Riders are the laughing stock!
5 Things To Watch During The Second Half Of The CFL Season? 1) How will the Stampeders match up with the defending Grey Cup Champions in the Battle of Alberta? The Stamps lost the season series to the Eskimos last season. It cost them home field advantage in the West Final and a trip to the Grey Cup. The Eskimos have had some major defensive issues in the first half, but with Mike Reilly at quarterback and receivers Derel Walker and Addarius Bowman, they are still a serious threat.

2) The Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The Bombers have not been in the playoffs since 2011 when they won the Eastern conference. The Bombers had a shaky start and it almost cost Mike O'Shea his job, but thanks to Matt Nichols and a greedy, aggressive defense they have appeared to turn the corner. Although the skeptics will say Nichols will end up being their downfall. 3) Zach Collaros. The Hamilton quarterback was on his way to winning the Most Outstanding Player award last season before he was derailed with a serious knee injury. The Tiger Cats are hoping he writes the same script as Mike Reilly did last season when Reilly returned for the second half of the season. I will stick with my pre season prediction. The Tiger Cats will represent the east in the Grey Cup. 4) The Saskatchewan Rough Riders. I have to chuckle as there are a lot of red faced Rider fans who thought this would be a playoff team under Chris Jones (I'm happy to report, I wasn't one of them). The fines, the cheating, the mismanagement, the Riders have been an embarrassment. The Riders won't make the playoffs but let's hope they start to show some improvement. 5) Challenge Flags. The season got off to a messy start with coaches testing the new challenge rules. Fans were not happy and the flow of the game was being affected. The league has backed off some of the questionable by the book calls and the coaches are getting a better feel for it, so let's hope we see a much more fluid second half.

There is a lesson though, about letting the number of bodies requiring chauffeuring outnumber the quantity of available chauffeurs in the household, but it probably doesn’t bear discussing here. Regardless, this year we do not have to scramble to find the list of supplies, we don’t have to hit the stationary shops on school eve, we don’t have to hit the mall at all, because this spring was GRAD YEAR!! After a brief peruse through some flyers I estimate I am saving approximately $968.22, plus or minus a laptop, by having children that are finally all over 18. That will buy a lot of drinks at the local pub to celebrate my good fortune… except the kids are over 18 and suddenly “eating out” has gotten extra, extra expensive with the addition of “drinking out”. Romantic Evening Recipes
Does the thought of a romantic evening at home feel foreign to you, or does it bring on a sudden panic attack?
You know – a nice bottle of wine, some candles, decadent food, some soothing music and perhaps wearing something other than your comfy clothes? It's not always easy to think of ideas for a romantic evening at home, particularly for couples who are either not terribly romantic, or who have been together for so long that some of the spark has dwindled. To help you plan your special evening in this month’s Luscious Joys, I have included (yes!) decadent romantic finger food. Finger food can be fun and you can feed each other. You never know until you try – come on, you might rekindle some of that lost passion!

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Melt brown sugar in butter - mix well. Add in orange liqueur, dried fruit mix and almonds and stir. Pour over brie in oven-proof pan and bake for 15-20 minutes at 350 degrees. Let sit for 5-10 minutes and then transfer to a serving dish. Cut a small wedge of the brie to let some cheese ooze out and indulge in this decadent dish. Serve with water crackers or sliced baguette.

Preheat the grill to the highest temperature. Arrange the oysters on a bed of rock salt in a large, shallow, ovenproof dish. Combine the Worcestershire sauce and butter in a small saucepan and heat the butter until it melts and the mixture begins to bubble around the edges of the saucepan. Remove from the heat. Spoon a little of the Worcestershire sauce and butter mixture over each oyster, and top evenly with the diced bacon and season with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste. Cook under a preheated grill for 3-4 minutes, or until the bacon is crisp. Sprinkle with parsley, and serve with lemon wedges. And to finish off the night:

The Accountable$ CHICKEN WINGS Who does not love chicken wings? Restaurants and bars have “wing nights” every single week and have made wings a part of our culture. The flavours are never ending and in a constant state of flux. In the beginning it was mild, medium and hot – now, it’s extra hot, screaming hot, burn your face off hot. And other tantalizing flavours are from simple to exotic—salt & pepper, honey garlic, teriyaki, sweet & sour, salt & vinegar, buffalo, BBQ, jerk, curried, Thai, and Aleesha and Denise’s favourite, honey and salt — and the list goes on. Many times I have tried to make “wings” at home and they have never turned out quite the way I was planning; not crispy enough or not as flavourful as I had imagined. Over and over I have been disappointed with my “wing night” until now!! Yippee! You are going to LOVE these AMAZING “Salt and Pepper” wings – truly I am not exaggerating either.
THIS IS WHAT YOU NEED:
3 pounds party wings – the small ones (Approx. 36 in total) 4 tsp salt and 4 tsp course ground pepper 4 tsp sesame oil 5 cloves fresh garlic, chopped 4 green onions, diced 2 tbsp sugar (optional) Splash of Vodka or Tequila (optional)

If you have questions, we can help!
THIS IS WHAT YOU DO:
Preheat oven to 450°F. Combine the salt and pepper together in a small bowl. Place the wings on a lightly oiled baking sheet or use parchment pepper. Sprinkle the wings with the mixture, then shake the tray to cover the wings OR throw all the wings in one big bowl, dump in all the mixture, and toss to cover wings. Bake for 15 minutes, then turn and bake for another 15 – 20 minutes until the desired crispiness is achieved. As soon as the wings are close to being done, heat the sesame oil, chopped garlic and green onions over medium heat until garlic is slightly browned. Place cooked wings in large bowl and toss with your oil mixture until completely coated. At this point, use your imagination in accordance to your craving for the evening! I added a splash of vodka (for a little tart) and 2 tbsp of sugar (for a little sweet). I also had some leftover wing marinade, which I added. Just think about it, there are a thousand different sauces you could come up with… use your imagination. Come up with your own signature sauce. May the creative gods be with YOU! Kathryn Hartwell

The current Alberta unemployment rate of 8.6% is far from its historic high of 12.4%, which occurred in October 1984 under a Conservative government, which had been in power for over a decade at that point. It appears that the many of those who lived and worked through those difficult times may have forgotten how grim it was. Possibly because the majority of them experienced the ensuing upswing, incredible prosperity and opportunities as things picked up and Albertans made their way back to attain more than they had before. Perhaps providing so much in those years for the next generations, we failed to convey the tests and trials experienced along the way. Consumerism and self-obsession were around in the 80s; yet like today, some individuals and communities saw beyond themselves reaching out. People looked for and found opportunities, capitalized on them creating a different future, a different ending for the story. Along the way, they let go of things to start afresh. Letting go can be more problematic than risking the leap to new realities.

This is but one story of Albertans facing difficult times. Listening to conversations about the province’s current change in circumstances, one may believe this has never occurred previously in Alberta. Surprisingly for today’s average working Albertan, this is true. They were an infant or not yet born during the last major economic turndown from the late 70s to mid-80s.

with mortgage rates ranging from 14.5% to a high of 21.75%, she decided to sell her home, divesting herself of any property, so she could move into subsidized housing. Her friends provided support emotionally and physically with food, clothing and some financial aid. She volunteered to keep herself busy, often riding her bicycle to work because there was no money for gas, her daughter in the child carrier on the back and her son riding along beside her. The volunteer position transitioned to parttime and then full-time employment. She remarried, moved, made new friends, returned to university, enjoyed a career she dreamed of and travelled the world. Her children obtained post secondary educations, found fulfilling careers, purchased homes and thrived. They all continue to reach out and give back. That single parent was this writer in 1984. George Santayana provided the following insight, “Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” It is valuable to spend time recalling where we come from and what we experienced along the way. It is important for our children and grandchildren to know things may not have been as they are and may not remain so. Sharing our successes and failures hopefully teaches them and if not enables them to learn along the way. Take time to step back, perhaps way back. Look at the bigger picture. It may change your perspective.

JOB FAIR JOYS
2016-2017 Directory Issue
Recently, Costco and the Calgary Airport Authority hosted Job Fairs, which shouldn’t be newsworthy events, but boy were they ever. I’m sure you saw the news footage of the line to get in – a lineup longer than you’d find for the only washroom at a convention full of pregnant women. (Make sure you go to the washroom before you go to a momma and baby show at the BMO Centre!) Perhaps you were even one of the job seekers to stand in line at those events. (I really hope you got an interview for your effort alone!) I’m afraid that is the reality of our current job market. There are far fewer jobs than people looking for work, and just like the only woman in a town full of men, employers can be very picky about who they form a relationship with. (There was a T.V. series about this called “Men in Trees”; it made me want to move to Alaska.) As I watched the news coverage, I played a little game in my mind. The narrative went like this, “interview, interview, nope, nope, interview, nope, oh Lord no, what where they thinking, interview, really - pyjama bottoms - did

you mistake this for a slumber party?” Yep, I was judging people based on their looks alone; something I believe to be wrong, rude and all sorts of unfair, BUT… realize this; at the other end of that enormous lineup, there is a person feeling beyond overwhelmed, stressed and exhausted, who has been given the task of screening out candidates, so that instead of a thousand resumes being dumped on the HR department’s desks, only 1/3 or less end up there. Sure, they might ask you a few questions, but odds are they have already formed an opinion of you based on your appearance. So treat job fairs like preliminary interviews. Dress for success. That doesn’t mean three piece suits and ties unless the job you are looking for would require a suit as your daily outfit. If you are applying for a job on a construction site, clean jeans and a nicely pressed button-up shirt will do. For an office job, a shirt and tie may be the way to go. Make sure you are clean shaven or your facial hair is trimmed neatly, brush your hair and please brush your teeth. I know I sound like your mother. Ladies, carefully apply your makeup, but remember: you’re applying makeup for a job search, not a night out at Cowboys. Try to pick out something that will stand up to standing in line for hours. Leave the power shoes that may give you a boost in height and confidence at home. After the second hour, the only thing your Jimmy Choo’s will give you is a blister and an increasingly bad attitude and bad attitudes show. Lastly, and I can’t stress this enough…NO PYJAMAS! Even if they are your best going out ones. Have several clean copies of your resume printed up and ready to hand out, and keep them in a folder or portfolio. This will keep them crisp and wrinkle-free as you slowly progress forward. You may even want to have several different resumes prepared. You don’t want to be applying for a security job with your childcare resume, although being trained in the use of a taser might be appropriate for some childcare jobs (kidding!) Employers get so many resumes at a job fair, you want to make sure yours is easy to read and the important information pops out. Ask each and every employer you meet for their business card. Jot down a few notes about what that employer is looking for, and then within the next 24 hours send them an email thanking them for the opportunity. You may even want to consider updating your resume based on what you learned at the job fair and sending the revised issue along with your thank you email. Sounds like a lot of work, doesn’t it? It should be. You aren’t going to get a job just for showing up anymore. Your job search is a job in itself. The good news is there are Career and Employment supports throughout the province, you can access for free. Check out the Alberta Learning Information Services website and Alberta Works for a directory of agencies, or stop in at McBride Career Group for more information and mark your calendar for Tuesday, September 13th. McBride will be hosting a job fair from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm with several local and regional companies that are hiring. I hope to see you all there dressed for success. The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

The School of Life “The difference between school and life? In school, you’re taught a lesson and then given a test. In life, you’re given a test and that teaches you a lesson.” ~ Tom Bodett You’ve had them… I’ve had them… we have all had thousands of them and we will continue to have them our entire lives. I’m referring to life experiences. Most of the time, we are not fully aware that our day is a series of experiences... we simply go about our day. When we have a significant experience, however, the natural reaction is to label it as a good or a bad experience. Hmmm, is it truly good or bad, or is it whatever we choose it to be? With the new school year just started, I consider how in school we are given knowledge that we are expected to understand and learn. If we didn’t understand it, we at least tried to memorize it before the inevitable test (insert unpleasant flashback of chemistry class and the periodic table!). The teacher has made it clear there is a right and a wrong answer to the questions we will be asked. But is that true? I’m sure I gave more than one teacher a grey hair or two as I passionately gave different perspectives to the lessons being taught. I questioned the accuracy of history records, debated the interpretation of poetry and pointed out on several occasions that there was more than one way to calculate the ‘right’ answer in algebra. It seems that I’ve always seen value in different perspectives, which caused me to question the theory of things being right or wrong, good or bad. How is it that two people can have the exact same experience and yet their interpretation or recollection of the experience can be completely different? Over the years I have discovered that how we understand situations and events is directly related to our past experiences, values, beliefs, culture, attitude and many other factors. There is a story about two brothers who grew up with a very harsh father. As adults, one brother was angry and bitter and when asked why, he said, “With a father like mine, how could I not be?” The other brother grew up to be caring and compassionate and when asked why, he said, “With a father like mine, how could I not be?” Both of these men had the same experience with their father and yet chose to interpret the experience differently and as a result, had a different approach to life.

At the monthly Women Talk meetings in Strathmore, women tell their stories… their experiences from their perspective. Some of the stories are humourous and enlightening, while others are sad, shocking and tug at your heart-strings. And yet, every story is inspiring because the women are not bitter about any of their experiences. Instead, they speak about the lessons they learned and the awareness they gained. They offer insights into how they now see the world. They acknowledge how the experience, which may have caused them great pain, has made them stronger, bolder, wiser and more motivated to make a difference in the world. They do not express resentment, bitterness or hopelessness but speak of healing, compassion and of the enduring human spirit. Is that what life experiences really are? If we do not judge them as being good or bad, but simply a ‘test’ that brings learning, can we reduce the distressing emotions we often feel with some experiences? And is it by looking for the lesson in our experiences and the experiences of others that we can change how we see the world and bring about lasting positive change in our lives and the lives of others? I believe this is true, but it is only my perspective. What’s yours? "We don't see things as they are, we see things as we are" ~ Anais Nin For more information about the monthly WOMEN TALK meeting in Strathmore, including how you may participate by attending or being a Talker, please visit www.WomenTalk.ca/Strathmore.

Referendum on Electoral Reform With the Rio Summer Olympic games now completed, I’d like to congratulate our Canadian athletes on their accomplishments. Canadians understand that during the Olympic Games, first past the post decides the winner of each game. The same goes to the Stanley Cup playoffs and the Grey Cup playoffs. The team with the most points is the winner, and that is a good way of determining who made the best effort and should be recognized as a champion or winner. When you elect federal Members of Parliament in Canada, since we became a country in 1867, we have successfully had peace, order, and good government through the First Past the Post electoral system. It simply means that the candidate with the most votes in any given electoral district, is elected in that district. This was true in Bow River in October 2015, and in the other 337 federal electoral districts, also called ridings, across Canada. We have the same system in all Canadian provinces, and at the municipal level as well. It has worked well over the last hundred plus years, it has rendered stable governments for Canadians. Now, the Liberal government wants to change the way Canadians vote, based on a promise in their 2015 campaign platform. It seems like the system has accomplished its intended goal of delivering stable governments. The Conservative Party has been clear, that before making such a crucial change to the basic tenets of our democracy, the government must give all Canadians a say through a national referendum. Because I believe the First Past the Post system has in fact served us well, I believe it’s critical that in this referendum, a question must ask Canadians if they are satisfied with First Past the Post as the way they elect MPs. Recent polls have said 73% of Canadians demand a referendum on electoral reform, and we expect The

Chestermere, AB – The City of Chestermere is buzzing with excitement after becoming western Canada’s first Bee City. Only the second city designated in Canada, Chestermere is helping in the fight to save the declining population of bees in Canada. Chestermere hopes to inspire other communities to become Bee Cities and beautify spaces everywhere! "It's always inspiring when members of our community share their passion with the rest of us. Truly the Bee City application was a result of those passionate community members bringing forward a great idea that we could all participate in to make Chestermere even better!” said Mayor Patricia Mathews.

2016-2017 Directory Issue Bees and other pollinators are struggling across Canada and around the world. It is estimated that 85% of flowering plants (including fruits and vegetables) depend on pollinators so a decline in their numbers could devastate food production. The importance of saving the bees and other pollinators has been top of mind for Dr. Preston Pouteaux, a local beekeeper and advocate. In an effort to raise further awareness about this critical issue, Pouteaux approached Chestermere officials about becoming an official Bee City. “Creating amazing neighbourhoods like those we have in Chestermere requires that we care for the work of important pollinators. It seems like a small thing, but the very best cities in the world pay attention to the health of their ecosystems and gardens. We are the kind of vibrant community that sees the value in our bees, our people, and every blossoming corner of our City,” said Preston Pouteaux, founder of the Chestermere Honey Bee Society. Working with Pouteaux, City staff set up a Bee City committee comprised of local community members and City staff. With the approval of City Council, they brought an application to Bee City Canada and were officially designated as a Bee City on July 27, 2016. The designation highlights Chestermere’s current efforts to promote healthy ecosystems such as the Community Garden, Chestermere in Bloom, the Birth Forest, as well as more than 70 parks and green spaces around the community. Going forward, the Bee City committee will implement pollinator friendly community initiatives and awareness opportunities. Residents are encouraged to watch for programming, events and activities to learn more about how they can support pollinator populations. For more information on Chestermere becoming a Bee City visit www. chestermere.ca/beecity. For more information on Bee City Canada please visit www.beecitycanada.org. Chestermere is a dynamic recreational city in Southern Alberta. As one of Alberta’s fastest growing municipalities, the City of Chestermere has rapidly evolved from a lakeside summer village into a recreational oasis for nearly 20,000 residents. Bee City Canada is a group of passionate and concerned citizens who believe that together, we can all take action to reverse the decline of pollinators. Langdon Softball Association has about 220 active adult players on 18 teams. The league welcomes all skill levels and is focused on the fun of the sport. Wins and loses are not recorded to maintain a friendly, community atmosphere. Despite the wet weather for much of July, teams are still having a successful 2016 season. Tony Baker, Vice President of the Langdon Softball Association, says “Softball has been a big part of Langdon for many years. I started playing out here about 10 years ago and it remains a wonderfully attended summer sport.” To get involved with the Langdon Softball Association, post your interest in playing on their Facebook page and a team may pick you up from there.

through the hard work of Langdon residents, recreation facilities. You may have also noticed that the LCC is working towards new ball diamonds as the first phase of recreation facility construction on the joint use site.
Langdon Little League has t-ball and baseball programs for ages 4 to 18. This past season was truly successful, with the league boasting the highest number of teams in the organization’s history. Brendan Connolly, LLL President, says their success is a result of hard work and dedication from their volunteer coaches, board members, umpires, organizers of the end of year coach pitch tournament, Langdon Days parade float volunteers, and the Chestermere Umpire-in-Chief Dawn Tessemaker. There were 21 Little League teams with about 200 players this year, but Brendan expects those numbers to grow. “We believe that we will have 2 or 3 additional teams next season and it is our goal to enter our first All-Star teams for our Minor, Major, and Junior divisions for the 2017 season,” he stated. He acknowledges there are challenges with our current diamonds and looks forward to the build of new diamonds, “The two fields currently in Langdon do not meet Little League specifications, which means our most advanced players have to travel to other communities to play their home games for baseball. We lose many young players due to the lack of proper playing fields in our community and we know that with the construction of new regulation size diamonds, we will be able to support our local talent and keep them in our community.”
Given the high number of adult and youth ball players that utilize Langdon space, the potential for Little League expansion and the possibility for large revenue-generating adult tournaments, members of the collaborative have chosen to focus efforts on the quad ball diamonds as the initial phase. This aligns with past recreation studies of the Langdon area, which can be accessed on the Community Links page at www.northbowrec.ca.
Representatives from LSA and LLL, along with reps from North Bow Community Facility Board and Langdon Recreation Centre, are working with Rocky View County and Rocky View School Board to begin development of the quad ball diamonds on the joint use site. Construction on the site will begin once necessary approvals and permits are granted through provincial and local governments, with no confirmed start date as of yet. In the meantime, LCC organizations are gearing up for a major fundraising campaign so that when final approvals are granted, construction can begin.
Members of both the Langdon Softball Association (LSA) and Langdon Little League (LLL) are keen to work with other organizations in our community to make these new ball diamonds a reality. LSA and LLL would like to share with the community a lit-

The Things Kids Say...
BOOKS
KIDS
1) NUDITY I was driving with my three young children one warm summer evening when a woman in the convertible ahead of us stood up and waved. She was stark naked! As I was reeling from the shock, I heard my 5-year-old shout from the back seat, "Mom, that lady isn't wearing a seat belt!" 2) OPINIONS On the first day of school, a first-grader handed his teacher a note from his mother. The note read, "The opinions expressed by this child are not necessarily those of his parents." 3) KETCHUP A mother was trying hard to get the ketchup out of the jar. During her struggle the phone rang, so she asked her 4-year-old daughter to answer the phone. "Mommy can't come to the phone to talk to you right now. She's hitting the bottle."

4) MORE NUDITY A little boy got lost at the YMCA and found himself in the women's locker room. When he was spotted, the room burst into shrieks, with ladies grabbing towels and running for cover. The little boy watched in amazement and then asked, "What's the matter, haven't you ever seen a little boy before?"

5) POLICE # 1 While taking a routine vandalism report at an elementary school, I was interrupted by a little girl
about 6 years old. Looking up and down at my uniform, she asked, 'Are you a cop?' 'Yes,' I answered and continued writing the report. 'My mother said if I ever needed help I should ask the police. Is that right?' 'Yes, that's right,' I told her. 'Well, then,' she said as she extended her foot toward me, 'would you please tie my shoe?' 6) POLICE # 2 It was the end of the day when I parked my police van in front of the station. As I gathered my equipment, my K-9 partner, Jake, was barking, and I saw a little boy staring in at me. 'Is that a dog you got back there?' he asked. 'It sure is,' I replied. Puzzled, the boy looked at me and then towards the back of the van. Finally he said, 'What'd he do?' 7) ELDERLY While working for an organization that delivers lunches to elderly shut-ins, I used to take my 4-year-old daughter on my afternoon rounds. She was unfailingly intrigued by the various appliances of old age, particularly the canes, walkers & wheelchairs. One day I found her staring at a pair of false teeth soaking in a glass. As I braced myself for the inevitable barrage of questions, she merely turned and whispered, 'The tooth fairy will never believe this!' 8) DRESS-UP A little girl was watching her parents dress for a party. When she saw her dad donning his tuxedo, she warned, 'Daddy, you shouldn't wear that suit.' 'And why not, darling?' 'You know that it always gives you a headache the next morning.'

Mom is taking a bath Dear Kids, Don't be alarmed; the world isn't coming to an end. I am simply taking a bath. It will take about 30 minutes and will involve soap and water. Yes, I know how to swim. Even if I didn't, forcing myself to drown in a half-inch of lukewarm water is more work than I've got energy for. (Which reminds me, I'm all for science projects, but the next time you want to see if Play-Doh floats, use cold water.) Don't panic if I'm not out right on time. I've heard that people don't dissolve in water, and I'd like to test the theory. While I'm in the tub, I'd like you to remember a few things: The large slab of wood between us is called a door. Do not bang to hear my voice. I promise that even though you can't see me, I am on the other side. I'm not digging an escape tunnel and running for the border, no matter what I said a while ago. I didn't mean it. Honest. There will be plenty of time later to tell me about your day. "Later" means at a time when I am no longer naked, wet and contemplating the bubble gum in the blow dryer. I know you have important things to tell me. (Please let one of them be that you have invented a new way to blow bubbles, not a new way to add gum to your hair...) Believe it or not, shouting, "TELEPHONE!" through the closed bathroom door will not make the phone stop ringing. Answer it and take a message. Since Amazing Mind-Reading Mom has the day off, you'll need to write that message down. Use paper and a pencil. Do not use your brother and the laundry marker. We can't send him to school with telephone-number tattoos. Water makes me wet, not deaf. I can still tell the difference between the sound of "nothing" and the sound of a child playing the piano with a basketball. I can also hear you tattling at the top of your lungs. I'm choosing not to answer you. Don't call your dad at work and tell him I am unconscious in the bathroom. No matter how much I would like it, water does not make me forgetful. I remember who you are and why you are grounded. No, you can't go to Shelby's house to play. No, you can't go to Shelby's house to use the bathroom. If someone is in our other bathroom, you will just have to think dry thoughts and wait. Unless you have four feet and a tail, do not think of going outside to "water" the lawn. I know the dog does it. The neighbours don't feel the need to call me when the dog does it. Unless the house catches fire, stay inside and keep the doors locked. Do not go outside and throw rocks at the bathroom window to get my attention. I know it works in the movies, but this is reality, a place where people don't like to sit in a tub while rocks and broken glass rain down on them. Do not set the house on fire. Call me if there is an emergency. Emergencies are: 1. Dad has fallen off the roof. 2. Your brother and/or sister are bleeding. 3. There's a red fire truck in front of our house. Emergencies are not:

Back to school can be a very busy time for families. But don’t forget to have breakfast! Breakfast should always be apart of a child’s morning routine before leaving for school. Giving your child a healthy start to the day can increase their energy level so they can do better inside and outside the classroom throughout the day. Children who eat break-fast show an improved academic performance, longer attention spans, better attendance and decreased hyperactivity in school. Eating a well balanced breakfast improves the intake of essential vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin C and Iron. At school, a hungry child can lose concentration in class, have no energy for playtime and snack on unhealthy foods, such as chips or biscuits, so make time for breakfast - for you and your kids! 5 For Life www.5forlifeforever.com

Mini Pizzas are a great go-to for busy moms and kids alike. Who doesn’t like cold pizza anyway? This recipe is very kid friendly! My daughter whipped this up in no time, and enjoyed the whole process. I am not a huge fan of Lunchables cold pizzas, however, my kids loooooove Pizza, so I had to try this homemade version. These are tasty hot or cold, and are a great option to grab for school lunches.

This is an exciting time of year! For so many families, September represents the start of a new year; a new school year, that is. It can be easy to forget about the furry family members in all the hype and excitement. As the routine changes into one of summer mode, it will now transition back to early mornings and busy schedules that include hockey practice, dance classes and music lessons. Some pets can find this change very startling, and for some it can cause anxiety.
Separation anxiety can occur when a dog or cat exhibits stress and behavioural problems due to being separated from his/ her humans. Dogs will show this through barking, destructive chewing, attempts to escape, accidents in the house, panting, pacing, and/or howling. If you notice any of these behaviours in your pup, it can be managed by teaching him to cope with the changes. Desensitization and counter-conditioning techniques are excellent tools in helping resolve your dog’s “triggers” to anxious behaviour. A training plan either through a certified dog trainer, or educational articles found at your veterinary clinic can encourage a successful resolution to your pet’s anxiety. These techniques often start with a focus on the trigger, for example, grabbing your car keys and putting on a jacket to leave. The idea is to not actually leave the house, but instead go through the routine without even acknowledging your dog, then put it all away and return to normal house activities. Repeat this multiple
times throughout the day. Eventually, he will realize that this is no longer associated with you leaving the house. Include the kids in this activity to make it as real as possible, and remember- it takes work and repetition to start to see changes. Once this step has been mastered, you would then move on to the next part of the program (either offered by your trainer, or ask for resources available at your vet clinic). Keep in mind that anxiety can be elevated by inadequate exercise and mental stimulation. Try to incorporate a dog walker or introduce your pup to a doggy daycare. This helps to break up the day and exerts pent-up energy, leaving your dog socialized, tired and HAPPY! Cats are different than dogs when it comes to anxious behaviour, and will often show signs of stress through unique behaviours, such as accidents outside of the litter box, diarrhea, excessive grooming, increased vocalization, aloofness, decreased appetite, and/or aggression to other animals or people. Cats will often show a stress response similar to how they show symptoms of illness, so it’s always best to have them examined by your veterinarian first to ensure they are healthy. Your veterinary team will have handy tools and articles that can help improve your cat’s anxiety, mental stimulation, and also improve his environmental enrichment. A great resource for cats that exhibit anxiety, or to help combat feline life stressors visit: https://indoorpet.osu.edu/cats Separation anxiety doesn’t have to make the whole family anxious! Don’t hesitate to contact your veterinary professional if you have any questions or concerns – we are always here to help! Animal Care Centre

7 Steps To Capturing Perfect Phone Group Photos It’s surprising how hard it is to take great photos of groups. It seems that as hard as you try, someone is always looking away, blinking or not looking their best in the photograph. In this tutorial, you’ll discover seven simple techniques that will help you capture picture-perfect phone group photos. Whether you’re shooting for a professional-looking photograph or a quick keepsake, following these steps will help you create images you’ll treasure for a lifetime. 1. Get The Timing Right Timing your photo correctly is absolutely critical. Of course, you’ll want to select the time of day when the light is best. But much more importantly, you’ll want to choose the time when your subjects have had the most rest and are looking their best. If you have to take a group photo at an event (which is where most group photos are taken), it’s generally a good idea to rally your group as early as possible to take your most memorable group photo. Take advantage of your subjects’ positive energy before they have a chance to get tired and hungry or need to fix their hair and make-up. 2. Communicate Your Vision Before you even get started with a group photo, you’ll want to gather everyone together and talk about what type of photos you’ll be taking and what to expect along the way. If you’re photographing adults, you’ll want to share your vision of the final product. It’s a great idea to encourage your group to share and contribute their ideas. Who should be in front? Should anyone be holding a prop, wearing a special item of clothing, or standing in a particular spot? Let everyone know, “if you can’t see me, I can’t see you.” Encourage everyone to lean forward or move their head so that they can be seen clearly. If you’re photographing children, you can turn the conversation into a game, a challenge, or an opportunity. For example, “Today I’m going to take your photo and I want you to teach me your best dance moves. Can you show me how to do a ballerina pose?” 3. Compose Your Photo Effective composition can take your group photo to the next level. Positioning your subjects to follow general composition rules rather than posing will allow you to achieve amazing results with a natural candid feel. While you may be tempted to line your subjects up and have them face the camera with big smiles on their faces, you may want to try a more unusual approach. When you have a small group of people, positioning them in a straight line works very well. Try that pose with a larger group, though, and you’ll wind up with a lot of dead space in the top and bottom of your photo. To avoid the dead space issue, you can create a panoramic photo. Or you can shake things up a little more and position your subjects in a circle! 4. Relax Before The Big Moment Most people will pose as soon as you pull out your phone, and will try to hold their biggest smile for as long as they can. But it’s nearly impossible to hold a perfect smile for more than a few seconds – and the strain will show in your photos. To avoid this problem, let your group know that they can relax until it’s time for them to give their best smile. When working with children, it’s a good idea to have them practice their best smiles ahead of time – off camera. Then you can collaborate on a
code word to use when you’re ready for them to show that wonderful smile. This is a fun twist on the classic “say cheese,” which can be effective but can also turn out some robotic smiles. Choose a silly code word, which leaves the children laughing at you. It’s a great way to capture those special smiles. 5. Have Your Phone Camera Ready To Go There’s nothing more frustrating than having a subject who’s ready and a photographer who isn’t! Before posing and cueing your subjects, it’s important to know how to use your phone’s settings. Access the camera app so you’re ready to take photos the second your subjects are ready. Set focus and exposure ahead of time. Look at your composition, tap on your group to set focus, and hold your finger down for a few seconds to lock the focus point (you’ll see the letters AE/AF Lock in a yellow box on the screen). A little yellow sun slider will appear on the screen. You can use your finger to slide the sun up and down in order to adjust the exposure (image brightness). Now that your camera is set and your subjects know what to expect, it’s time to say your code word – and the result is beautiful. 6. Use The Art Of Distraction When taking group photos of children (and some adults), you need a lot of patience and a goofy personality to capture genuine smiles and keep your group focused. Games and props can also make a big positive difference. The right kind of distraction can turn a mediocre photo into a memorable keepsake. Try using a crazy distraction like a light saber glow ring! Another great option is to stick a mirror on the lens side of your phone so that the people being photographed can see themselves while you’re taking the picture. If you’re really having a hard time getting your group to smile, whoopee cushions are a terrific ice breaker, too! Some simple props from the dollar store, a goofy personality behind the camera, and some fun games like “Simon says” can help you get amazing phone photos of groups. 7. Use Your Phone Camera’s Burst Mode Your phone has an amazing “hidden” feature… burst mode. This allows you to take ten photos in a single second, which will dramatically increase your ability to capture your subjects at just the right moment. In seconds, you’ll have taken a series of photos that you can then go through to find the perfect composition in which every face is smiling. To use the phone camera’s burst mode, simply press your finger down on the shutter and hold it. As you hold your finger down, you’ll hear the shutter fire multiple times. When you lift your finger, you’ll have a selection of images to choose from. Sometimes you have to take a lot
of photos to capture that special moment – especially when taking group shots. Patricia Manuell Memories by Design

Protein
Now that summer is almost over and soon to be a distant memory, September is the month to mentally prepare for our long, dreary and maybe cold winter. There is nothing more fabulous and fantastic to do when it’s cold outside but to stay inside and try out some new healthy comfort food. I really have never done much cooking with lentils, and they look so boring and uninteresting, but hey; nothing ventured, nothing gained. Everyone can benefit from eating lentils; they are high in fibre and complex carbohydrates, while low in fat and calories. They are naturally gluten-free and their exceptionally low glycemic index (low GI) values and resistant starch content make them suitable for a diabetic diet.
DRYCLEANING Fibre
WASTE MANAGEMENT 56 •
Just 100 grams of green lentils (uncooked) packs in a whole day’s worth of the fibre you need! High intake of fibre is associated with lower blood cholesterol levels and protection against developing colon cancer and Type 2 diabetes.
A serving of lentils contains more protein than a serving of yogurt! A ¾ cup serving of lentils provides about 13 grams of protein. With such high protein content, lentils are regarded as a meat alternative in Canada’s Food Guide!
Iron
Just 100 grams of lentils provides 50% of your daily iron needs! Iron plays an integral role in the formation of hemoglobin in blood and myoglobin in muscles, both of which carry oxygen to the cells. That’s why fatigue and tiredness are usually the first symptoms people notice when they are low in iron. Average adult women require double the daily amount of iron than men. For vegetarians, getting enough iron is particularly challenging.
Manganese
Just 100 grams of red lentils provides 100% of your daily manganese needs! This mineral is stored mainly in our bones and in major organs including the liver, kidney, and pancreas. Manganese plays a role in maintaining normal blood sugar level, and helps protect against free-radical damage. Lentils are superstars and easy to prepare; just rinse, boil, and season. No soaking required. There are a ton of wonderful recipes on-line for lentils. Try something you have never tried before. Kathryn Hartwell

The Smiths The Smiths were unable to conceive children and decided to use a surrogate father to start their family. On the day the surrogate father was to arrive, Mr. Smith kissed his wife and said, "I'm off. The man should be here soon." Half an hour later, just by chance a door-to-door baby photographer rang the doorbell, hoping to make a sale. "Good morning, madam. I've come to..." "Oh, no need to explain. I've been expecting you," Mrs. Smith cut in. "Really?" the photographer asked. "Well, good. I've made a speciality of babies." "That's what my husband and I had hoped. Please come in and have a seat." After a moment, she asked, blushing, "Well, where do we start?" "Leave everything to me. I usually try two in the bathtub, one on the couch and perhaps a couple on the bed. Sometimes the living room floor is fun too; you can really spread out!" "Bathtub, living room, and floor? No wonder it didn't work for Harry and me.” "Well, ma’am, none of us can guarantee a good one every time. But, if we try several different positions and I shoot from six or seven different angles, I'm sure you'll be pleased with the results.” "My, that's a lot of..." gasped Mrs. Smith. "Madam, in my line of work, a man must take his time. I'd love to be in and out in five minutes, but you'd be disappointed with that, I'm sure." "Don't I know it," Mrs. Smith said quietly. The photographer opened his briefcase and pulled out a portfolio of his baby pictures. "This was done on the top of a bus in downtown London." "Oh my goodness!" Mrs. Smith exclaimed, tugging at her handkerchief. "And these twins turned out exceptionally well, when you consider their mother was so difficult to work with." "She was difficult?" asked Mrs. Smith. "Yes, I'm afraid so. I finally had to take her to Hyde Park to get the job done right. People were crowding around four and five deep, pushing to get a good look." "Four and five deep?" asked Mrs. Smith, eyes widened in amazement. "Yes," the photographer said. "And for more than three hours too. The mother was constantly squealing and yelling. I could hardly concentrate. Then darkness approached and I began to rush my shots. Finally, when the squirrels began nibbling on my equipment, I just packed it all in." Mrs. Smith leaned forward. "You mean squirrels actually chewed on your, um... equipment?" "That's right. Well, madam, if you're ready, I'll set up my tripod so we can get to work." "Tripod?????" "Oh yes, I have to use a tripod to rest my Canon on. It's much too big for me to hold for very long. Ma’am? Ma’am? ... Good Lord, she's fainted!!"

Doesn't expecting the unexpected mean that the unexpected is actually expected? Take my advice - I'm not using it.
The town website reports that: “Kinsmen Park is a fantastic spot for families to enjoy year round. Located in the downtown core, Kinsmen Park has pathways, winter ice skating, gazebos, picnic benches, docks for fishing, a playground, washroom facilities and a community amphitheater. A popular destination in the hot summer days is the Lions Splash Park, located on the south end of Kinsmen Park. The splash park includes a great variety of colorful spray apparatus that are activated by touch. “ Today, as I was walking, I stopped to watch a young family learning how to fish… Dad getting the rod ready while his daughter waited patiently and then she delicately put her line in the water…. Precious moments
Many town events in Strathmore take place at or near Kinsmen Park including: Canada Day, Strathmore Stampede Parade, RE/MAX Annual Easter Egg Hunt, the Annual Car Show and Shine, The Newsy Neighbors Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival, and many many more.

High Five
Your Neighbour CHALLENGE
If you feel there is less interaction between neighbours or people in general than there used to be, I would have to agree with you. I remember as
a youngster, I knew every single person on my street. In fact, I was very reluctant to go shopping with my mother because it seemed that the whole “shopping” experience ending up being a “visiting” experience with every person in the grocery store (we grew up in a small town). Life seemed much simpler back then and I believe people were friendlier and less suspicious than the world in which we live now. I understand life is far more complicated than it used to be and, yes, we do have more to fear and have therefore become less friendly, even with the people in our own neighbourhoods! But, I have come to realize people still have those “old fashioned” ideals within them. Maybe they are just a bit more guarded these days. Nothing feels better than that moment when you are driving through your neighbourhood and a neighbour gives you a wave and smile and you think to yourself, “Well isn’t that nice—I don’t even know that person”. Or you’re walking down the street and someone says “good morning” and you think to yourself, well isn’t that nice? Why don’t we do more of that sort of thing—are we afraid they might ignore us? Have we become afraid to step out of our comfort zone? What’s the worst that can happen? Maybe you’re just a little insecure, too busy, or just have never tried it. You could change someone’s entire day with just a little smile or a simple hello – it’s like all of a sudden something changes in that exact moment. You have made a conscience effort to live to your full potential, take control and make a difference. All this with just a little smile or wave OR a “High Five” (imagine such a thing) – you are sending out positive energy. You have more power than you think. Just try it and see the reaction you receive and feel your inner energy change in the blink of an eye. Have you heard about the story of Juan Mann—a man whose sole mission was to reach out and hug a stranger to brighten up their lives? In this age of social disconnection and lack of human contact, the effects of the “Free Hugs” campaign became phenomenal. As this symbol of human hope spread across the city, police and officials ordered the “Free Hugs” campaign BANNED. Why? This true spirit of humanity came together in what can only be described as awe inspiring. If you go to http://www.freehugscampaign.org it will fill your chest with pride. So we started our own campaign, and we called it “The High Five” campaign. Yes, I know it is not as easy as a smile or a hello,

and the “High Five” is going to take a little more work, but do not let expectations hinder your path. The first few times may seem a little weird and people might not know for sure what it is you are trying to accomplish. It might help if you say loudly “High Five” before you raise your arm. But, the reaction of your action may just surprise you both and just think of the possibilities you are creating. According to quora.com – a certain study has proven that, when a person gets a frugal (nonsexual) touch like a pat on the back, neck-touch and even high fives, it gives him/her a certain amount of self-satisfaction by increasing the oxytocin, a hormone that increases the sensation of bonding and well-being, and also reduces the level of alpha-amylase, which is a stress indicator. It’s not all about giving an out-of-the-blue “High Five” but also what the receiver receives from this action. You know we all strive for the acceptance of our ideas or our personality by our peers and friends. So whenever someone raises their hand to give us a high five (for something we said or did), it gives us an amazing feeling of satisfaction and happiness and we instantly feel connected to that person. We have all heard about paying it forward; this in essence is what you are doing with a smile and a joyous “High Five”. It is a gesture of celebration and greeting.
Only one, we are not asking you to change the world over night. All it takes is one person at a time—one small action can change the world. Make this day and every day a celebration and share your joy with a BIG “High Five”! You can do it – I have total faith in you! Do you know what I think is truly fabulous? Flowers.
After all, what woman in this universe does not love flowers? They just make me feel happy inside. When you look closely at any flower, it is like looking into the center of the universe. I wish I could grow flowers in my home all year long. I miss my lilacs and hollyhocks in the winter months but there are some flowering house plants that will do second best.
In addition to its ability to purify the air, Rosemary also promotes physical and mental well-being. The amazing smell of rosemary can instantly improve your mood, reduce fatigue and anxiety, and enhance memory. Some studies even suggest that rosemary can treat insomnia. You should place rosemary in a sunny spot and be careful not to over-water it. Rosemary is said to improve memory and help to increase intelligence and focus. While many of those claims are still being researched and studied, its effects on the brain do indicate an increase in memory retention, which is never a bad thing; keeping your mind quick will help to keep it young.
These plants are not only beautiful to look at, but they are also very beneficial for your health. They can improve the flow of positive energy in your home or at work. They are a living breathing thing and they can provide us with a sense of tranquility and happiness. Some plants actually have the power to purify the air you breathe. Who would have thought that having a plant as a friend could actually improve your overall health?
For hundreds of years, Lucky Bamboo has been used as a symbol of good fortune and prosperity in Asia. According to feng shui, the vertical shape of this plant represents the element wood, which influences our vitality, energy, and physical activity. We recommend you place it in a corner of a room that has low light and keep it in a glass bowl with approximately 1 inch of water.
This first plant is one of my favourites. I used to have two rather large peace lilies in my office until I ran out of room and I gave them away. I gave one to my daughter, so I’m glad she will be reaping the healing benefits of this plant (I wonder if it is still alive). The peace lily increases the flow of positive energy by purifying the air and neutralizing harmful gases. This plant grows well in shaded or dark places like an office or in a corner. Having at least one peace lily in the bedroom will provide you with a sense of peace and restful sleep.
The long-lasting flowers of Orchids have a sweet and pleasant smell that will improve your mood. These plants are also known to release oxygen at night. Therefore, you should have at least one orchid in your bedroom. Did you know you could also make tea from your beautiful orchids? The Chinese were the very first people to discover the healing effects of these plants. The most common use today is as a medicinal tea. Dried Dendrobium are said to have healing properties that aid in the treatment of cancer, poor eyesight, and a weak immune system. They can even be used to increase libido.
Jasmine’s sweet and pleasant smell will soothe a stressed mind and boost energy levels. You should put this plant near a south-facing window when indoors. The health benefits of jasmine tea are fabulous and include a reduced risk of heart attacks, a stronger immune system, and the prevention of diabetes. It also helps prevent cancer, while reducing stress, improving digestive processes, and lowering cholesterol. It has also been found to eliminate harmful bacteria and ease chronic inflammation like muscle aches and pains.
Besides its powerful healing properties, the Aloe Vera plant also brings good luck and positive energy. Put it in indirect sunlight and water it regularly. Aloe Vera can’t tolerate standing water, so make sure that it has proper drainage. Aloe Vera has been used for medicinal purposes for centuries from relieving heartburn to slowing the spread of cancer; researchers are only first beginning to unlock all of the powerful uses of this universal plant and its many amazing by-products.

2016-2017 Directory Issue According to feng shui, holy basil purifies the air of negative energy and attracts positive vibrations to the environment. It is one of the few plants that release oxygen 20 hours per day. This amazing plant is also known for its strong antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory properties. Holy basil should be placed in a north, east or northeast area of your home or garden and must be directly exposed to sunlight. Basil also is considered one of the healthiest herbs. It's best when fresh and has an impressive list of nutrients. Vitamin K, essential for blood clotting, is one of them. Just two tablespoons of basil provides 29 percent of the daily recommended value. Basil also provides vitamin A, which contains beta-carotenes, powerful antioxidants that protect the cells lining a number of numerous body structures, including the blood vessels, from free radical damage. This helps prevent cholesterol in blood from oxidizing, helping to prevent atherosclerosis, heart attacks, and stroke. Other vitamins and minerals in basil include iron, calcium, manganese, magnesium, vitamin C and potassium. Chrysanthemum has the ability to purify the air and remove toxins from the home. It will also provide you with a sense of calmness, so make sure to have at least one chrysanthemum at your home. The Chinese always seem to figure these things out first; they have used the chrysanthemum for hundreds of years. They have used this fabulous plant to treat respiratory problems, high blood pressure, and hyperthyroidism. They also say the flower can reduce inflammation and calm your nerves. In addition to its many strong medicinal properties, Sage also promotes the flow of positive energy in your home. Don’t place Sage in places that are very dry or have low humidity. Sage is an herb native to the Mediterranean, belonging to the Lamiaceae (mint) family along with oregano, lavender, rosemary, thyme and basil. Due to its high antioxidant capacity, sage can help protect the body's cells from damage caused by free radicals, which often results in cell death, impaired immunity, and chronic disease. When I sit in my garden in the summer surrounded by all my flowers and herbs, I now know why I have such a wonderful feeling of peace and tranquility; the plants that surround me are exuding positive energy. When I think about all of the above fantastic plants and flowers, I realize that I can be surrounded by beneficial plants even in the wintertime—all these incredible indoor plants can surround me with peace and tranquility. Head out to your local garden store and purchase yourself a little bit of heaven. Kathryn Hartwell

Synchronicity is always in effect when it comes to my life and as I was doing some research on colours and tips, I ran across an article on the worst decorating mistakes people make and it made me laugh, so I thought I would share a few of these with you.
& Residential needs
1. This one I can truly identify with as we are in the process of choosing our new baseboard and door moldings out of the thousands there are to choose from. The mistake they point out is that people think they must highlight baseboards and trim by painting them white so you end up with a racing-stripe effect around your room. Instead, pick a colour that accents your wall colour or paint your baseboards, walls and crown moldings the same colour as the wall to make the ceiling feel higher.

4. This is one of my favourites and I see it over and over again. People hang their artwork too high. The bottom of the piece of art should sit no more than eight to ten inches above a piece of furniture, be it a headboard, sofa or credenza. In a hallway or stairwell, hang the art so that the middle of the work is at eye level--you do not want to be looking up at it.
6. Displaying collectibles all over the house. Create big impact by grouping a collection of figurines on a table or family photos on one wall. Dotting them all around the house only creates a cluttered look.
www.aplusdevelopments.net
thenewsyneighbour.com
2. Buying area rugs that are too small for your room. An area rug should allow for only a 12 to 16-inch border of flooring around a room’s perimeter; anything more and the rug will look insignificant. The front legs of your furniture should sit on the area rug, so the rug doesn’t appear to float in the middle of the room. 3. Going without a headboard. The head of the bed is the focal point of any bedroom, but many people tend to overlook the headboard. If you prefer not to have one, add interest with eye-catching artwork or a decorative tapestry, or paint the wall behind the bed a dramatic colour.
5. Choosing paint colours first. You will drive yourself crazy trying to find a bedspread that perfectly matches the shade of smoky plum you already painted your bedroom walls. Instead, invest in the bedspread you have fallen for, and let one of the colours from the pattern inspire your paint colour.

ROOFING
Some people look for a beautiful home, others MAKE a beautiful home. - Unknown
7. Positioning furniture along the edges of a room. Try dividing a long, narrow room by using the two-to-one rule: Make twothirds of your room the main seating area, and one third a space for a desk, reading chair or piano. Don’t be afraid to show the back of a chair or sofa by using the piece to divide a room. These are some of the main decorating mistakes people make and there are many others: having more than one focal point in a room, not layering lighting, decorating around a piece you don’t love, hanging cheap drapes or blinds, collecting too much stuff, mixing too many wood tones, hanging oversized family portraits in main living spaces, skimping (or overdoing it) on toss cushions or buying a chandelier that’s too small.

In the end, I have found it is best to pick the colours you love and not too much clutter and you will love your space. And, oh lord, don’t be in a hurry when it comes to a renovation – it will never go as planned. Kathryn Hartwell

My biggest area of experience with moving animals and pets is mainly with the 4 legged variety of pets. Dogs and cats have always been an important part of my family life. We all know that moving homes has its own set of challenges and can be stressful. I asked a client the other day how her kitties were doing. She had just sold her home and was busily packing for her looming closing date. Instead of explaining, she said "come here and see." So I followed her into the basement bathroom, she opened the cupboard under the sink and there was Buddy, her one kitten. He just looked up at us and meowed "hi." She smiled and said, "He only comes out to eat." He will be fine, she has no doubt, but Buddy knows that something is up and he isn't ready to deal with it yet. There are several things we can do to help our critters cope with moving, and please discuss options with your veterinarian to find out what is best for them. Here are a few things to keep in mind: FIRST... Call your vet and book an appointment. They advise not to wait until the last minute to do this, because there are several things to consider including pet records, possible vaccinations and great advise on keeping your pet comfortable and safe. 1) Try to keep to your normal schedule as much as possible. Routines are very important, especially when so much else around them is changing. Feed and/or walk your pet at the same time that you would normally. 2) Go into your new dwellings first before you bring your pet in. If you don't have anywhere to leave your pet or are traveling alone, keep your pet on a leash or in a carrier at first. Inspect your new home for anything that might be harmful, such as wet paint, sawdust, broken glass or bare wires. 3) Once you are sure that it is safe, release your pet from the carrier or the leash. Make sure that all doors and windows are

Allow your pet to get used to your new dwellings. 4) Lay out familiar items, such as a familiar bed and toys. 5) Take time out to play with your pet. Give them time to associate their new home as a positive place. 6) Make sure that you update their ID tags. If your pet is microchipped, make sure that information is changed as well. Since you are in a new place, it will be easier for your pet to get lost, as they are in a new environment. 7) Go over your new yard very carefully to make sure it is dog or cat proof, there are no harmful items or chemicals, the gates close, the fence is secure and your pets can't escape. Your pet may be confused with the new surroundings. Have patience and understand this is a confusing time. 8) For outdoor cats, keep them inside for a few nights until they get acclimatized. Gradually, allow them to spend more time outside. 9) Enjoy your new home with your pet! Written by Hayley Poirier Check out Hayley’s ad on back cover
And a smile for you... This guy sees a sign in front of a house: "Talking Dog for Sale." He rings the bell and the owner tells him the dog is in the backyard. The guy goes into the backyard and sees a black mutt just sitting there. "You talk?" he asks. "Yep," the mutt replies. "So, what's your story?" The mutt looks up and says, "Well, I discovered this gift pretty young and I wanted to help the government, so I told the CIA about my gift, and in no time they had me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, because no one figured a dog would be eavesdropping. “I was one of their most valuable spies eight years running. The jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn't getting any younger and I wanted to settle down. So I signed up for a job at the airport to do some undercover security work, mostly wandering near suspicious characters and listening in. I uncovered some incredible dealings there and was awarded a batch of medals. Had a wife, a mess of puppies, and now I'm just retired." The guy is amazed. He goes back in and asks the owner what he wants for the dog. The owner says, "Ten dollars." The guy says, "This dog is amazing. Why on earth are you selling him, so cheap? The owner replies, "He's such a liar. He didn't do any of that stuff."

Immortality
If you were immortal, you could live forever and be the oldest person on earth. Young fools would flock to you seeking wisdom and guidance – they’d probably believe anything you said. You would also have no need for a bucket list because you’d have the rest of eternity to have fun.

Superhuman Intelligence
You could be as smart as Albert Einstein with the power of superhuman intelligence. Due to your superior intellect, you would never have to study because you’d just be that good. You could party the night before an exam and still ace it.

With the power of mind control, you could persuade your boss to give you a raise, demand an A from your professor, and brainwash your parents into letting you quit school and go backpacking through Europe. Basically, you could do anything you wanted. Life would be grand!
Force Field
If you value your personal space, being able to generate a force field could come in handy. This power would be ideal during those times you just want to be left alone. Creepers at the club would never mess with you, because they would just be propelled across the room if they tried.

You wouldn’t even need to visit Platform 9 and ¾ to walk through walls if you possessed the power of intangibility, which is the ability to phase through solid matter without harm. You could never be locked out of your house or car because a key wouldn’t be necessary.
Flying
There’s really no need to introduce this superpower. It’s the power every little kid dreams of having from the moment they first watch Wendy and her siblings take off into the night sky with Peter Pan. Imagine a world with no traffic jams, where you could travel anywhere on a whim and see the world from a bird’s eye view. If you could fly, this imaginary world would become a reality.

Blu-Stone Entertainment Group So you want music? We’ll give you music. Strathmore’s very own Blu-Stone Entertainment Group is stirring up happy feet all around our town and surrounding cities. This group of locals has worked, over the past year, to harmonize their individual talents and come together as one of the most inspiring musical groups in the business. Blu-Stone Entertainment Group was derived from solo artists who met while playing at Strathmore’s Royal Canadian Legion #10 just prior to last year’s Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival. Since then they have proven themselves to be nothing short of lyrical and instrumental geniuses. The band began as a group of three and has since grown to a total of seven members - all of whom have diverse tastes in music. With Gary, Miles, Barbara, Alex and Carl all leading in vocals and acoustics, Trent on Drums and Kelly playing Bass, it’s no wonder that this group is able to create such a varied style of beats and genre’s. “We play everything from old country to new country; classic to modern rock, pop - we can play almost every genre,” says the band. “It’s nice to have the diversity that we do - it means we have a huge scope of talent to call upon for all occasions from corporate functions to weddings and parties of all kinds. We can perform as a small band or duet, up to the full entertainment group of 7 members.

Summer seems to be flying by, I’m not sure if it’s the rainy weather or the resulting swarms of mosquitoes or what, but time is travelling faster than most years it seems. Sadly our mosquito program is woefully inadequate for the amount of standing water we have. The water table in this area is normally high but I have never seen standing water stay so long, the saturation is far above anything normal. It seems to be working well for the farmers though; the crops look better than they have in decades. I noticed they are almost done with the haying so it’s soon time to put that equipment away and get the harvest gear up and running. This is also the time of year to watch more carefully than ever when you are driving. The large farm equipment doesn’t break the speed records and tends to need to take up a good portion of the road. I would ask that everyone please just chill out and put a James Taylor CD in the stereo and accept that you are going to be 5 or 10 minutes late for wherever you are going. Pull over if they are coming towards you or if you are behind them just sing along with James while you drive along at 20 or 30 for a couple versus of “you’ve got a friend”, it won’t hurt too much and might improve Karaoke Night at the Crossing.

if I am tied up in a meeting or otherwise undisposed for a short time. Despite the advise of many other people in public service, I am going to keep doing all that, I don’t feel it is an imposition, I hope I can help somehow and I plan on doing this for a long time if you want me to. Here is what I would like you to do for me. I don’t want anything extra, what I receive is enough, if I need more I will do something to supplement. What I would ask is simply this: Try to see everything from all possible angles, whenever something appears one way, try to see it from another way, be especially aware when something appears to make no sense at all, that is a big alarm bell that tells you there may be more to the situation. Have patience with your neighbours, they may think that the way they live is best and that the way you live isn’t the right way to be. Try not to do anything that might affect another person in a negative way, whether it be making noise, parking in someone’s way, letting a dog bark, changing the level of a yard making drainage worse for someone else, filling the streets with cars or any number of other things that generally might cause someone to be annoyed. Just please try to make our little section of the world a pleasant place, that’s it, I would appreciate it. I’m going to tell you the secret of dealing with Government as a reward to doing that favour for me and I’m not just talking about Municipal Government, I mean every level. This is a three stage thing. First always put everything in writing and I don’t just mean pen and paper, digital is fine too. Create a record of anything you do or ask, when you are dealing with anything to do with any Government. That’s why I always ask for emails, it creates a record, it makes someone accountable and you can track whatever it is that you are doing, it also allows them to get back to you if there is information needed. Second, always find out who it is that you are dealing with, get a name and a title, it is critical in the event something isn’t going the way you think it should. The third thing is to understand what their limitations are and what they are relying on if they are telling you something you don’t agree with, it probably isn’t something they are just dreaming up, Government runs on policy, it isn’t optional most of the time. If you follow these three steps you will do much better in your dealings with the authorities. That’s about it for this month, keep those cards and letters coming, I don’t know where that saying came from but it seems to fit somehow. See you next month. Peel it (I find a small sharp paring knife works best) and then chop the ginger into smaller pieces. Place in a non-reactive pot (I use my large corning ware casserole pan) to simmer the ginger, water and sweetener. The rule of thumb is one cup of water to every ½ cup of ginger. Most recipes call for sugar but I prefer to use pure maple syrup; you could also use palm sugar or any natural sweet syrup you desire. For the maple syrup, I add 1 tbsp. per cup of water; if you are using a sugar product, use ½ cup for every 2 cups of water. Slow simmer on your cook top for about one hour, then strain.

Altogether Different
2016-2017 Directory Issue There are a lot of ways to enjoy your ginger. Add it to your next smoothie or juice, or to your next stir-fry or homemade salad dressing. Use fresh or dried ginger to spice up any fish recipe. Fresh ginger root keeps well in your freezer. If you find yourself nauseous or with an upset stomach, mince up a small amount (about the size of your fingernail) and swallow it. You'll be amazed at the relief it provides. Ginger Ale: Put 1-2 tablespoons of the strained ginger syrup into a glass; fill with cold club soda or seltzer. Add a sprig of fresh mint or basil and ice if you wish. Make tea using 1-2 tablespoons of the ginger syrup with hot water. Add a teaspoon or more to a cup of hot or iced tea. The medicinal uses of ginger have been known for at least 2,000 years in cultures all around the world. The most commonly used medicinal part of the plant is the rhizome, the root-like stem that grows underground. Ginger actually has broad-spectrum antibacterial, antiviral, antioxidant, and anti-parasitic properties, to name just several of its more than 40 pharmacological actions. The pain-relieving potential of ginger is used for muscle and joint pain and been found to reduce the severity of migraine headaches. Not only that, but many studies have suggested that increasing consumption of plant foods like ginger decreases the risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and overall mortality while promoting a healthy complexion and hair, increased energy and overall lower weight. For women who experience symptoms of dysmenorrhea (severe pain during a menstrual cycle), ginger might be the answer. In one study, 83% of women taking ginger capsules reported improvements in pain symptoms compared to 47% of those on placebo. I’m not done yet—in a study published in Cancer Prevention Research journal, they found that a ginger root supplement administered to volunteer participants reduced inflammation markers in the colon within a month. Researchers on the study explained that by decreasing inflammation, the risk of colon cancer is also likely to decrease. But that’s not all — studies have shown that ginger can reduce liver damage from preservatives used in cosmetics and soaps, and can even help REVERSE liver disease from lead exposure. I could go on and on about how healthy ginger is for you, just do yourself a favour and give it a try. You will not be sorry you did! By: Kathryn Hartwell

The simplest and quickest method of recovering from attacks of acute illness, fevers, inflammatory diseases, etc., is to rest quietly in bed in a warm but well-ventilated room, and to take three meals a day of fresh ripe fruit, grapes by preference. If the grapes are grown out of doors and ripened in the sun so much the better. I have found from two to three pounds of grapes per day sufficient. If there is thirst, barley water flavoured with lemon juice should be taken between the meals.

The castor oil is very good for carrying off the phlegm from the stomach and bowels that children always swallow instead of coughing up like an older person. It is well in addition to the above remedy to give a little licorice or onion syrup to relieve the bronchial cough.

REAL ESTATE
Simple Feng Shui
So you’re trying to sell you place and it’s going a little slow? Well, if you’ve done everything your realtor says, like decluttering, improving your décor, and staged it like a showhome and it’s still not selling, you may want to try these ancient Chinese Feng Shui secrets: 1) Make sure you emotionally let your house go. If you are holding on to it emotionally, buyers will sense that this is not the house for them. 2) Write a letter to the gods. Get a red envelope and write a letter; address it to “whoever needs to buy your house”, and write that you are happy to sell to them and are hopeful they can show soon and you are thankful. Add a piece of wood from your yard and wrap it all in your red envelope and then throw it in a fast flowing river. Try to use biodegradable paper and don’t throw it in a lake. It must be a fast flowing body of water. 3) If your house is on the market due to a negative event such as a divorce, bankruptcy or death, have it energetically cleared. You can do this yourself or hire a Feng Shui practitioner. To cleanse it yourself: get an orange and a bowl of water. Eat the orange and break the peel into small pieces. Mix the orange peel into the water bowl. If you can, open all the windows in your home. Go to the front yard, dip your hand in the mixture and sprinkle into the air. Ask for the house to be blessed and cleansed. Walk to the sides and back and repeat. Enter your house through the main door, sprinkle some water there. Then go to every room and sprinkle the air. Sprinkle a little more in the most negatively affected areas. Go back to the front and bury the rest of the mixture into the ground somewhere. Say thanks.

'Honey! The garbage disposal is dead again. Please come reset it.' 'You know where the button is,' I protested through the shower pitter-patter and steam. 'Reset it yourself!' 'But I'm scared!' she persisted. 'What if it starts going and sucks me in?'
Carol Warawa, C.C.S, SRES
There was a meaningful pause and then she snuck in, 'C'mon, it'll only take you a second.'

Sighing loudly, I squatted down and stuck my head under the sink to find the button. It is the last action I remember performing.
So out I came, dripping wet and butt naked, hoping that my silent outraged nudity would make a statement about how I perceived her behaviour as extremely cowardly.

Cat Lover? 2016-2017 Directory Issue
We've all had trouble with our animals, but I don't think anyone can top this one: Calling in sick to work makes me uncomfortable. No matter how legitimate my excuse, I always get the feeling that my boss thinks I'm lying. On one recent occasion, I had a valid reason but lied anyway, because the truth was just too darned humiliating. I simply mentioned that I had sustained a head injury, and I hoped I would feel up to coming in the next day. By then, I reasoned, I could think up a doozy to explain the bandage on the top of my head. The accident occurred mainly because I had given in to my wife's wishes to adopt a cute little kitty. Initially, the new acquisition was no problem. Then one morning, I was taking my shower after breakfast when I heard my wife, Deb, call out to me from the kitchen.

It struck without warning, and without any respect to my circumstances. No, it wasn't the hexed disposal, drawing me into its gnashing metal teeth. It was our new kitty, who discovered the fascinating dangling objects she spied hanging between my legs. She had been poised around the corner and stalked me as I reached under the sink. And, at the precise moment when I was most vulnerable, she leapt at the toys I unwittingly offered and snagged them with her needle-like claws. I lost all rational thought to control orderly bodily movements, blindly rising at a violent rate of speed, with the full weight of a kitten hanging from my masculine region. Wild animals are sometimes faced with a 'fight or flight' syndrome. Men, in this predicament, choose only the 'flight' option. I know this from experience. I was fleeing straight up into the air when the sink and cabinet bluntly and forcefully impeded my ascent. The impact knocked me out cold. When I awoke, my wife and the paramedics stood over me. Now there are not many things in this life worse than finding oneself lying on the kitchen floor butt naked in front of a group of 'been-there, done-that' paramedics. Even worse, having been fully briefed by my wife, the paramedics were all snorting loudly as they tried to conduct their work, all the while trying to suppress their hysterical laughter... and not succeeding. Somehow I lived through it all. A few days later I finally made it back in to the office, where colleagues tried to coax an explanation out of me about my head injury. I kept silent, claiming it was too painful to talk about, which it was. 'What's the matter?' They all asked, 'Cat got your tongue?' If they only knew! - Unknown Author The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

Wheatland Funeral Home For a number of years, we as a funeral home have had the hope and desire to offer our community a program dealing with grief and loss and trauma and even abuse. We feel this need is ever more present now because of the lack of, or unavailability, of local programs. Because of this, we are extremely pleased and excited to offer the Edu-Therapy™ Program to our community. As an “after care” outreach to the families we've had the honour to serve, there would be no charge to a spouse or the children of a person who has died. Others who feel they could benefit from a program such as this would be charged a fee of $320.00 for the
eight session, eight week program. We want to emphasize the fact that this program is not only for those who have faced a death in their family. Grief presents itself in many ways and many forms and in a variety of situations. We as a funeral home will never garner any profit from this program. Any fees collected will go towards materials and expenses, and should there be a surplus, it will be donated to a local charity. Also, no person will ever be turned away because they can not afford it. One on one sessions also available.
For more information about the program, please visit our website

Now offering the Edu-Therapy™ Program Next session: Every Tuesday from September 20, 2016 - November 8, 2016 7pm-9pm at Wheatland Funeral Home. Pre-registration is required by phone or email.
