I feel a little sad writing the Editor’s Note this month because it means that summer is coming to an end. ut, I have got to say, so far, I think this has been one of the nicest summers we have had in a few years; remember all the rain last year? It really has been warm and wonderful! Warm and wonderful is also how you’ll find this August Issue.
Phone: 403-478-9114
I’m telling you, there are so many great articles and cool information in this Issue, you’re going to be thinking to yourself, “How on earth do these girls keep coming up with all this material?”!!!

Let me tell you, it’s not always easy, and sometimes in the end, when we are putting it all together, we start to question, ponder and even criticize if we have done the best we could have done.

I just want to say that I think I must be one of the luckiest people in the world to be working with two of the most talented people I know; this magazine has grown and developed because Aleesha and Denise truly are exceptional at what they do!!! Sometimes we forget to thank and appreciate the people in our lives and just take things for granted. I know there are a ton of people out there who look forward to receiving “The Newsy Neighbour” each and every month and we thank you for being a part of our lives. Enjoy each and every day left of this amazing summer! Kathryn Hartwell

Provincial Parks — a place where there are more things that you can’t do than you can. You can get even with a bear who steals your food by going to his favourite stump and eating the ants. You can duplicate the warmth of a downfilled bedroll by climbing into a garbage bag with two geese. You’ll never get lost if you remember that moss always grows on the north side of your compass. Bear bells are convenient for campers in grizzly country. The tricky part is getting them on the bears.
Camping Tips A two-man pup tent should not be used by a pup. A potato baked in the coals for three hours makes an excellent hockey puck. Shine a flashlight into one ear. If the beam shines out the other ear, do not go into the woods alone. The guitar of the noisy teenager at the next campsite makes excellent kindling. It’s entirely possible to spend your whole vacation on a winding mountain road behind a large motor home. Effective immediately, you will actually have to enlist in the Swiss Army to get a Swiss Army Knife. A tuba placed on your picnic table will keep campsites on either side vacant.
If you find yourself in emergency wilderness survival mode, the elastic band of your underwear makes a perfect slingshot for shooting small game. On your first day at the campsite, enough dirt will be tracked into the tent that you can grow all the food you need for the rest of the trip in the rows between your sleeping bags. Based on completely made-up statistics, those who eat a hot breakfast are 90% more likely to survive a bear attack.

Killer Biscuits Wanted For Attempted Murder Lisa, a resident of San Diego, was visiting her in-laws, and while there went to a nearby supermarket to pick up some groceries. Several people noticed her sitting in her car with the windows rolled up with her eyes closed, with both hands behind the back of her head. Once customer who had been at the store for a while became concerned and walked over to the car. He noticed that Lisa’s eyes were now open, and she looked very strange. He asked her if she was ok, and Lisa replied that she’d been shot in the back of the head, and had been holding her brains in for over an hour. The man called the paramedics, who broke into the car because the doors were locked and Lisa refused to remove her hands from her head. When they finally got in, they found that Lisa had a wad of bread dough on the back of her head... A Pillsbury biscuit canister had exploded from the heat, making a loud noise that sounded like a gunshot, and the wad of dough hit her in the back of her head. When she reached back to find out what it was, she felt the dough and thought it was her brains. She initially passed out, but quickly recovered and tried to hold her brains in for over an hour until someone noticed and came to her aid. The Newsy Neighbour

A little girl and her mother were out and about. The girl, out of the blue, asked her mother, “Mommy, how old are you?” The mother responded, “Honey, women don’t talk about their age. You’ll learn this as you get older.” The girl then asked, “Mommy, how much do you weigh?” Her mother responded again, “That’s another thing women don’t talk about. You’ll learn this, too, as you grow up.” The girl, still wanting to know about her mother, then fired off another question, “Mommy, why did you and Daddy get a divorce?” The mother, a little annoyed by the questions, responded, “Honey, that is a subject that hurts me very much, and I don’t want to talk about it now.”

It’s just a like a report card from school. It tells you everything.” Later, the little girl and her mother are out and about again. The little girl starts off with, “Mommy! Mommy! I know how old you are. You’re 32 years old.” The mother is very shocked. She asks, “Sweetheart, how do you know what?” The little girl shrugs and says, “I just know. And I know how much you weigh. You weigh 130 pounds.” “Where did you learn that?” The little girl says, “I just know. And I know why you and daddy got a divorce. You got an ‘F’ in sex.”

I won’t always cry, Mommy, When you leave the room. And my supermarket tantrums Will end all too soon. I won’t always wake, Daddy, For cuddles through the night, And one day you will miss Having a chocolate face to wipe. You won’t always wake to find My foot kicking you out of bed, Or find me sideways, Oon your pillow, When you want to lay your head, You won’t always, Have to carry me, In asleep from the car, Or piggyback me down the road When my little legs can’t walk that far. So cherish every cuddle, remember them all, Because one day soon, I won’t be this small. ~ Anonymous www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Make Your Tree Pose Jump for Joy, or Just Because it Can. As a teacher, continuing education is of vital importance. It is one of the ways to keep our proverbial cup full, how we can stay dynamic and current with our teachings, and how we stay inspired and engaged. Just like maintaining our own personal practice, continuing to learn and grow is an essential element as a teacher. I have been teaching kids yoga classes over the last few semesters - a whole new adventure for me. At the first session, I had this idea of what the classes would look like (laughable now!) - the kids would come in, be so happy and calm coming into our beautiful studio, sit quietly on their mats, go through some healthy lifestyle theory, a fun story acted out in yoga poses with our bodies (fun of course, but all while listening quietly and attentively), and we would then feel so happily satiated and exhausted we would all rest quietly in savasana... it was going to be beautiful! Then, on the day of my first kids yoga class, when I entered the studio, there was 14 very loud laughing children running in a circle, bolsters were forts, blocks were everywhere, no one wanted to sit on their own mats, and if I wanted them to be still and quiet, I quickly realized I was going to have to sit on them... I knew I was going to have to remake my class plan on the fly.
Children joined us on Saturday afternoon, and by then each of us ‘adults’ had given up the seriousness and studiousness that we so naturally bring to our yoga teaching/practice. I had let go of this idea that somehow the kids’ yoga practice would look like mine. Instead, we had embraced the idea that everything is yoga. Everything. Wiggly, giggly bodies, joyful dance, tears of hurt or frustration, to participate or not, the need to be the leader or learn to be part of a team or (for some children) to have the class plan given in advance in terms of ‘first this, and then that...’. Each game, each conversation, each opportunity to create trust in a relationship - it is all yoga.
With the power of imagination, touch, teamwork and FUN, yoga (like life) can teach our kids many things! With the power of imagination, touch, teamwork and FUN, yoga (like life) can teach our kids many things - personal power, compassion and empathy, communication and trust. I was reminded that all of life has the potential to be yoga - learning to live our lives in a whole-hearted, connected and joyful way. This teacher training not only has given me the tools I was hoping to gain to teach yoga to children, it gave me the great gift of being able to look at the world like a child again. It has shaken the seriousness out of my practice and teaching and opened up a world of possibilities that cannot only reveal more of yoga to us as individuals, but yoga lived as a community of people. This is how kids practice yoga all the time without even knowing that they are doing it.
Try this the next time that you are standing quietly in your tree pose in yoga class: imagine that you are a beautiful purple sparkly tree and that you are in a magical rainbow forest with mist kissing your cheeks and roots that can wade through the earth like water... and all the fellow trees around you We pretended we were are your forest family - each tree individual unique, but each single tree is essential to kitties, we danced our and creating the forest. Please don’t resist the urge names, we laughed to smile, and if you feel like jumping in place that is totally allowed. I bet you never take and played until we your tree pose quite so seriously again; and in had to hold our bellies my opinion, that is a good thing!
So I went with it. Over the next sessions, we cranked the music and danced, I let the kids teach me the yoga poses, we played games and told stories and made art and I did my best to meet the kids where they were at and make the experience fun. Despite my on-the-job learning, I was feeling like I could use a few more tools, a because they were few more ways to control the classroom setting, full of joy. and of course a few more fun things to bring to the kids, so I went looking for some training. Last weekend I went off to Rainbow Kids Yoga teacher training in Victoria, BC, and now I will never be the same. I hope. Right from the moment we walked in the door of the Fernwood Yoga Den to meet Amanda, we were put outside our comfort zone. We shared mats with complete strangers, we held each other’s hands and massaged knees and earlobes, we pretended we were kitties, we danced our names, we laughed and played until we had to hold our bellies because they were so full of joy. And that was the first hour! I am not sure what I expected, but this complete permission to return to being a kid was a divine, soul shaking experience, as was the amazing sense of community and trust that this out-of-my-norm practice created. After 3 days, the stranger’s mats that I sat on were no longer strangers; they were my friends. Page 16

Dear Failing to Figure: Sometimes it seems like one moment in time defines our entire existence. When things seem important at the time, it’s hard to look past some of our experiences for what they are - just one brief moment in time. It’s good to reflect and consider how much importance this particular incident would hold if you reflected on it a year from now, 10 years from now, 100 years from now - would it really have the same impact? Changing our perspective in this way can help us gain a bit of insight into the meaning of our experience. How would a highly successful individual – like Leonardo da Vinci or Albert Einstein view your experience - would they just shrug it off and get on with life? Would they use this experience to challenge themselves in exploring a different, more creative journey? Life might instead become more about how we respond to the things that we go through than the actual experience itself. As we are faced with challenges, we then have the ability to gain a better understanding about our skills, talents and what brings us satisfaction. We can take that knowledge and make more informed decisions in the future so that it might lead us to a more productive, gratifying existence. So instead of weighing the event so heavily, perhaps try lightening its value and look for other opportunities that might reveal themselves as you come to grips with your circumstances and redefine your goals. Remember that we all experience disappointment, all feel like we could do better sometimes. In fact, this very incident might be the impetus to help propel you into a situation in which you can truly excel, exceeding even your wildest expectations. So stay strong and keep moving forward without dwelling too much on issues along the way. Remember, it’s just one moment in time. Lifelines

every single day with me; usually only me. And then came his brother, so we turned the Terrific Twosome into the Three Musketeers – only far more whiny and without the fancy costumes. I went through that whole “I have to send my baby away! What will I do without him?” self-pitying crap for almost a full yeareven with the entire year of putting it off- even if he yells at me for calling him my baby, he will always be my baby- and WAAHHHHH I don’t WANT to send my baby to school! In order to curb this horribly whininess, paranoia, fear, and extreme nervousness I was feeling, so that I didn’t completely lose my ever-loving mind and turn into a heaping mess of snot and tears when the day came for him to put on his backpack and walk onto the bus I made a list of the reasons why sending my “baby” off to school was a GOOD thing. Maybe it will help some of you see it in more of a positive light as well! 1. Absence makes the heart grow fonderLook, I love my kid. LOVE. The kind of love you can’t honestly put into words – but if we are being honest… he’s was (and is) a jerk. Truth talk. The age of 4 was the absolute worst of all nearly 5 years he’d spent on this planet. This includes the 6 months of reflux screaming as an infant. It also includes the “terrible” 2s and the “HOLY FUDGE” 3s. It’s worse. It’s all of those things combined, plus the teenage rebellion years, and a mouth to match it. Holden going to school meant the majority of that mouth will be used on someone other than me (although hopefully not at all; you know the unspoken law that says children always act like angels for everyone else?). This means me not hearing as much of the mouth. A giant Holdeny mouth break. This means when he comes home, I will have missed him instead of being exhausted by him… and therefore (even though I ALWAYS love him), I will like him more. Boom.
My baby is going to school…. Yay??? Ok, YAY! The phone calls are starting to come, the time is ticking away, the summer is halfway over, sales on paper products and colourful bindery-type things are going on super sale, and as much as I’ve been kicking and screaming and playing the ‘ignorance is bliss card’, completely using my post-preggo forgetfulness to my advantage – I suppose I can’t ignore it any longer. It’s becoming back to school time again, y’all. Any year before Holden went off to Kindergarten, this didn’t bother me – it just meant fewer kids screaming in the streets and in general being jerky hoodlums; it didn’t mean anything to me before then, because I’d made the decision not to send Holden to public pre-k and to homeschool him myself… but that was only a temporary fix to a very stupid problem, and trust me when I say I was not mentally strong enough to continue his schooling at home beyond just preschool junk… so it was time. Time to send my baby off to kindergarten. Time to send him away for the very first time. For nearly 5 years, that kid spent practically every single hour of Page 18

2. LOL-worthy schoolwork I love (to make fun of) my kids’ artwork. I mean LOVE. There is almost nothing I enjoy more than a picture drawn of a sibling that looks more like a penis laying an egg. I love it so much I’ve written three blogs about it! Can you just imagine my sheer and utter delight thinking about the work that my little ‘artist’ will bring home from school? The stories he will eventually write? The weird stuff that flies off the top of his head when asked to draw specific things that do not at ALL look like the things he was asked to draw? Hell-to-theYES. I don’t usually like surprises (actually I LOATHE them)… but this is going to be like Christmas morning for me every single weekday. I do also expect to get a few calls home about the level of weird he expresses in class. Haters gonna hate, y’all. 3. Helloooooooooooooo Naptime! For about a year now, Holden has thought he’s better than nap time. So... about 99 times out of 100, he doesn’t take one, and instead bangs around upstairs like he’s conducting a marching band. Apparently “LAY DOWN AND BE QUIET” means “Kick the walls as hard as you can!” It doesn’t. And once big turd is out of the house during nap time? Nap time for the little turd will go much more smoothly. www.thenewsyneighbour.com
HEY! Maybe he’ll even start to nap in his ROOM and then it’ll REALLY be a party! 4. No more growling/biting/screaming/slapping/whining matchesLook, I’m pretty sure I’m not going to be fighting with Parker over a single Hotwheels car ANY time in the near future; therefore, these balls to the wall fits they both threw over who got what toy, and when, and in what order, and the “MINE MINE MINE” will cease. One would hope that by the time Holden drags his butt in the door from giving his teachers hell, they’ll be so excited to see each other that fighting will be a thing of the past. Snort. I know you’re snorting. A girl can dream. 5. My dog won’t be such a raging jerk anymoreYes, I’m aware that puppies will be puppies, which can include things like biting and nipping and whining and all kinds of other obnoxious things (much like a small child) – but Holden REALLY brings out the worst in this dog. I really don’t know what it is, but when those two get together it’s worse than my two HUMAN children together. It makes me want to sell ONE of them on Craigslist, and I’m not referring to the outdoor crapping animal. With Holden’s instigating butt out for the day, the dog will finally have a chance to CALM THE HECK DOWN. Score. 6. Lunch. Ahhhhh lunchFor nearly three years, I have been making lunch for 3 people, 5 days a week. Four people on the weekends. When I was watching my brother’s kid, it was 4 people every day. And then during lunch? Well, good luck getting anyone to eat. Picky McPickerton Parker has days where he either hates distraction or loves it, and the kind of distraction IS? Duh. Holden. He loves to make fun of Parker for not eating as fast, tease him with toys, slam his food down his throat and get up in 5 minutes, when it takes Parker a good 45 minutes – so they’re fighting for about 40 minutes straight. Every day. This does not an enjoyable meal make. No Holden? Peaceful lunch. Ahhhhhhhhh yeah, I can hear the waves crashing on the beach now. Wait… huh?? Yeah, I’m going with it. Look, I know this whole article has been centered around how awesome it is that Holden’s going to go to school because he’s been such a turd lately that it’s about time he got out and took it out on people other than me…
But let’s face reality here. I’m not a tyrannical loveless b----. My kids are my entire world, and really, I’m just trying to find a way not to lose my mind when I don’t have my BABY around anymore to snuggle on… even if he hates it. I hope this list helps anyone out there sending their BABY (sob!) off to school for the first time! Pardon me while I go and force him to cuddle with me while he yells at me and tries to get away… probably to go pick his nose and eat it like the BIG boy he is.

Sadly, it is August. Sadly, it is August. I say “sadly” because it’s all downhill from here; fall is coming. Ya, ya, I know, we still have 31 days of what could be good, summer-like weather but nothing changes the fact that fall is coming. The days start getting noticeably shorter by the end of August, evenings are definitely cooler, even the hottest day late in the month still has just a bit of an edge underneath that didn’t lurk there in July. There is one very bright spot, for those that have kids and, frankly, are sick of them being home all the time - it’s BACK TO SCHOOL TIME!!! (cue the cheezy “it’s the most wonderful time…” music now, please!!). And this is how Back-To-School time goes down in my house: (Disclaimer – I own a teenage boy, not a cute 6 year-old who’s actually… oh, I don’t know… excited about school?) Early August: “When does school start?” “I dunno. End of the month or something.” “Do we need to go shopping for stuff?” “No.” August 15: “Boy, there sure is a lot of “Back-To-School” ads running. Not much time left, huh?” “Nope.” “Maybe we should go shopping for school stuff.” “I’m good.” August 20: “Have you checked the school’s website to see what supplies you need?” “Nope.” “Do you know what day you go back?” “No.” “We should probably figure out what you need.” “Later.” August 25: “You know school starts soon, right?” “Yeah.” “And you know I’m out of town for a few days next week, right?” “Yeah.” “So time’s a-wasting, right?” “I guess.” Page 20

“Do you think we should go get you back to school junk?” “No. I looked. We don’t start until September.” “Oh. September what?” “2nd.” “Cool. Two whole extra days. What will we do with all our spare time?” (Note the dripping sarcasm. Kind of obvious, yes? He missed it.) “I dunno.” August 27: “So I’m away until September 1, leaving tomorrow. Anything you need?” “Nope.” September 1, 10 pm: “MOM!!! When are we going school shopping?? I need all my stuff for tomorrow!!” “Ask your father.”
BACK TO SCHOOL TIME It’s back to school time already, The summer has gone so fast. It seems like it was just the beginning, But now the good times have passed. Soon it will be time to follow the rules, Sit up straight and don’t act like fools. Find out your teacher’s name, Run outside and play a game. Catch up with old friends, These first few days are so busy, It seems like there’s just no end. The months will fly by so quickly, You’ll be learning new things as you go. The winter will bring more excitement Ice skating, Christmas and snow. Before you quite can believe it, Winter will give way to spring. Summer is right round the corner, And the last day of school bells will ring. Then it’s put away books, pencils and pens, Forget about spelling and counting by tens. Now it’s swimming and camping And boating all day, Skipping, and hop scotch and marbles to play. Places to go, new people to meet, Ice cream, lemonade, all sorts of cool treats. Just as you get used to hot days and warm nights, Cookouts, parties and mosquitoes bites. Somebody says, “Hey, it’s back to school time!” The summer has gone so fast. It seems like it was just the beginning, But now the good times have passed. BY PATRICIA MULLIN www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Two More Days ‘til School
Let me figure this out – it was 26 years ago when my first child started grade one. I would have been 29 years old and she would have been 6. It seems like a lifetime ago… well, 26 years is quite a while. I think I’m having one of those flashbacks trying to remember all the different life events I’ve had over the last 26 years. OMG there has certainly been a few ups and downs, changes, moves, heartbreaks and happiness, pretty much the same as just about everyone. I was babysitting my grandson Hunter this morning, my first grandchild who is two, and I was thinking about Aleesha’s first day of pre-school. Ha!! I actually remember it; now that’s a small miracle. My first child on her first day of pre-school… I’m not sure who was more frightened. It’s scary letting go as a parent and your little tiny angel of a child has her own fears.
I’m finally going to school this year, and now the big day’s almost here. I’ll learn to write and count and read-Only two more days ‘til school. I got new pants and shirts and socks, a brand-new red and blue lunch box; I’ll paint and sing and dance and play-Only one more day ‘til school. My hair is washed, my sneakers squeak, I’m so excited, I can hardly speak! New things to do, new friends to meet-Hooray! It’s the first day of school!
There are a few things you can do to help to reduce any separation anxiety your child may feel when you leave. There are a few things you can do to help to reduce any separation anxiety your child may feel when you leave. If at all possible, visit your child’s classroom a few times before school starts to familiarize them with the space and have your child meet teacher. Introduce your child ahead of time to common school activities, such as drawing pictures or storytelling. Don’t minimize the importance of easing your fears as well as your child’s. If you feel guilty or worried about leaving her at school, your child will probably sense that. The more calm and assured you are, the more confident your child will be. To prepare yourself for the upcoming tear-filled goodbye, ask your child’s teacher what her procedure is when children are crying for their parents. Make sure a school staff member is ready to help your child with the transfer from your care to the classroom. Find out how the school structures its daily schedule. Many preschools begin with a daily ritual, such as “circle time” (when teachers and children talk about what they did the day before, and that day’s activities), to ease the move from home to school. I know it’s hard! It can be hard for weeks but both of you will get over it; just like anything new in life start with baby-steps. It will all work out, it always does. Kathryn Hartwell

Creating the Summer of Your Dreams All Starts with YOU Last month we gave you three little strategies to get you on your way to creating the summer you wish to have: 1. Practice being present 2. Focus on what you want 3. Recess!!! If you missed it, you can find it online at the Newsy Neighbour website. www.thenewsyneighbour.com Now that we are into August, let’s explore what this month can do for you. Are you finding July flew by and you are already feeling like summer will be over before you know it? Are you feeling like you wish you had more time with your family and you are busy rushing off to work each day with only weekends to squeeze family time in? If you are feeling this way at all, consider implementing one or all of these strategies into your day.
3. Structure + Flexibility = Freedom.
If you want to experience the freedom that summer fun brings, then make a plan to not have a plan. Schedule time in your calendar to have complete flexibility to be absolutely spontaneous. When your scheduled appointment starts, anything is possible. No limits no judgements. Dance if you want to. Sing if you want to. The point is, whatever you want to do you get to do. Knowing you have this time booked for you in your calendar is like knowing you have a vacation booked. You get to dream up and play with ideas and then spontaneously pick whatever it is that brings you alive in the moment. Keep summer simple and fun by picking just one of the strategies you have read here or somewhere else. Pick what works for you and throw away the rest. Choosing and implementing just one simple strategy can make a massive difference in creating the summer of your dreams. Sticking to your chosen strategy will create consistency for you and bring more of you to your family and more of your family to you. As you transition into fall activities, make note of all of the wonderful things you’ve done and the fun times and memories you’ve created. It all began with you.
Make a plan to not have a plan. Schedule time in your calendar to have complete flexibility to be absolutely spontaneous.
1. Disconnect to Connect
Check your devices at the door. When you come home from work each day, make a practice of turning your devices off. Put your cell phone in airplane mode or just power it off completely. Just like your lengthy to-do list, your Facebook and your text messages will be there for you when you turn it back on. Encourage your family to do the same. As little as one hour each day will make room for all kinds of little juicy stories you can share about your day with your family.
2. Be Co-Active
Take time to listen to your family. Ask only open-ended questions. Questions that start with ‘what’ and are filled with love are great questions to ask. Be quiet and be engaged. Match the energy they carry when they are sharing with you. Take a stand for what they love and for what makes their day awesome. Be wildly curious. Here are a few examples: - What did you enjoy most so far today? - What else? (Two simple words that can open the doors to a beautiful conversation) - What’s one thing that makes you smile and giggle?

It is finally here. School has been out for awhile and although there are still regular chores to be done, it is time to enjoy that brief season we call summer. Somehow, thing change within us as we awake to birds singing, blue skies and weather that allows us to live outside. Watching young children playing outside, no longer confined by four walls or enjoying one of the many opportunities to gather together with family and friends, I want to practice living in each and every moment with true joy and abandon.

Do you remember the fun of filling summer days and nights outside playing games like hide and seek, baseball and soccer or having adventures as we created countries and worlds as we crawled through the bushes or lay on our backs staring at an evening sky? Then as we grew a bit older, just hanging out with friends, talking about our dreams or the next boy or girl that we thought was so cute. I remember the guys getting cars, tinkering with them, shining them up and going cruising. With warmer weather, we became more social and interactive. Are we still there or have we become an insular society hiding inside or outside with technology filling our days instead of people or nature? Einstein said, “I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction.” It is important to provide ourselves, our children and our grandchildren the invaluable experience of time away from gadgets and electronics. Doing so liberates and relaxes us. It enhances our creativity and ability to address an increasingly distressful exposure by the media to a world that appears alarmingly askew. The value of time unplugged should not be underestimated. Combine that with taking a break away from the everyday and suddenly life becomes simpler. So what are your plans this summer? Will there be more time outside with family and friends? Perhaps getting to know the neighbours? Or are you off discovering new places as your explore the world around you? Whatever your plans, I hope that each and every moment is filled with joy, laughter and at times a sense of awe. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

I AM A… BASIL PLANT Hello, there! My name is Basil and yes, I’m a basil plant. I was born in India; that’s where some of my relatives are from – they have lived there for over 5,000 years. I am very, very popular and one of the most widely-used herbs in the world. I am a member of the large mint family and officially known botanically as Ocimum basilicum. In the beginning, I was used as an embalming and preserving herb, found in mummies of ancient Egypt. Perhaps because of my embalming usage, I was also a symbol of mourning in Greece where I am known as basilikon phuton, meaning magnificent, royal or kingly herb. I am also known as St. Joseph's wort. I had other relatives that were born in Africa and were brought to ancient Greece by Alexander the Great in 356-323 B.C.E. then made their way to England from India in the mid-1500s and arrived in North America in the early 1600s. You see, there is more than one kind of me so that’s why my relatives are from a few different places around this big world of ours. There are over 150 different varieties of basil! In India, I am an icon of hospitality, while in Italy, I’m a symbol of love. Ancient herbalists believed placing me on the bites or stings of insects would draw out the poison. Today’s herbalists recommend using me as a digestive and anti-gas aid. I’m even good for easing anxiety and headaches because of my sedative properties. Just make a tea out of me for stomach cramps and to ease constipation. I am an excellent source of vitamin K and manganese; a very good source of copper, vitamin C; and a good source of calcium, iron, folate, magnesium, and omega-3 fatty acids.
Want to enrich the taste and cardiovascular health benefits of your pasta sauce? Just add a good helping of me. Basil is a very good source of vitamin A (through its concentration of carotenoids such as beta-carotene). Called "pro-vitamin A," since it can be converted into vitamin A, beta-carotene is a more powerful anti-oxidant than vitamin A and not only protects epithelial cells (the cells that form the lining of numerous body structures including the blood vessels) from free radical damage, but also helps prevent free radicals from oxidizing cholesterol in the blood stream. Only after it has been oxidized does cholesterol build up in blood vessel walls, initiating the development of atherosclerosis, whose end result can be a heart attack or stroke. Free radical damage is a contributing factor in many other conditions as well, including asthma, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis. The beta-carotene found in basil may help to lessen the progression of these conditions while protecting cells from further damage. I’m just amazing, you know, and a good source of magnesium, which promotes cardiovascular health by prompting muscles and blood vessels to relax, thus improving blood flow and lessening the risk of irregular heart rhythms or a spasming of the heart muscle or a blood vessel. Now you see the eugenol component of basil's volatile oils has been the subject of extensive study, since this substance can block the activity of an enzyme in the body called cyclooxygenase (COX). Many non-steroidal over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDS), including aspirin and ibuprofen, as well as the commonly used medicine acetaminophen, work by inhibiting this
same enzyme. This enzyme-inhibiting effect of the eugenol in basil qualifies me as an "anti-inflammatory" food that can provide important healing benefits along with symptomatic relief for individuals with inflammatory health problems like rheumatoid arthritis or inflammatory bowel conditions. WOW! If you have a monster haul of basil, the top way to use it all up is definitely pesto. This blend of basil, garlic, nuts, cheese, and olive oil is one of the most versatile condiments around. Tossing pesto with warm pasta is always a win, but spreading it on flatbreads, as well as tossing it with potato salads, add me to your soups or drizzled over grilled fish is fantastic. A little pesto mixed with mayo also gives sandwiches a serious kick of flavour! Use me on your pizza or cut a crusty roll in half and add salt, olive oil, a few leaves of basil and slices of fresh tomato, yum! Dress a tomato and mozzarella salad with shredded basil, salt and olive oil. I go well with sweet peppers, meat dishes, wine-garlic sauces, chicken, in butter as a steak condiment, eggs, and shellfish. My fresh leaves are a great accouterment to any salad, cheese or stuffing recipe. I am so versatile! Enjoy a warm cup of invigorating basil tea by infusing chopped basil leaves in boiling water for eight minutes. I really want you to include me in your healthy meals, so I have included a few ideas for how you can use me – you’re going to love having me in your family.
Fresh Basil Pesto 2 cups fresh basil leaves, packed 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan-Reggiano or Romano cheese 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil 1/3 cup pine nuts or walnuts 3 medium sized garlic cloves, minced Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste Combine the basil in with the pine nuts, pulse a few times in a food processor. (If you are using walnuts instead of pine nuts and they are not already chopped, pulse them a few times first, before adding the basil.) Add the garlic and cheese and pulse a few times more. Slowly add the olive oil in a constant stream while the food processor is on. Stop to scrape down the sides of the food processor with a rubber spatula. Add a pinch of salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Serve with pasta, or over baked potatoes, or spread over toasted baguette slices.
Basil Vinaigrette 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 1 shallot, chopped 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon sugar 1/2 cup roughly chopped basil leaves 1/4 cup white wine vinegar 3/4 cup olive oil Place the salt, sugar, mustard, shallot and basil in a blender
or food processor. Pulse several times to combine. Scrape the sides of the blender down with a spatula. Add the vinegar and pulse again. Turn the blender on low and take off the cap in the center of the blender’s lid. Slowly pour in the olive oil. It may sputter a little out of the open cap, so hold your hand over it to minimize splashing. When the olive oil is incorporated, turn off the blender and scrape the sides down one more time. Cover and purée everything for 1-2 minutes. Store covered in the fridge for up to a week.
Pesto Pasta Salad 4 cups uncooked spiral pasta (use rice pasta for a wheat-free option) 1 cup fresh basil pesto 2 tablespoon chopped green olives, or olive tapenade 1/3 cup pine nuts 1 cup frozen peas, defrosted (or fresh if you can get them) 12 ounces cherry tomatoes, halved Several fresh basil leaves, coarsely chopped 1 tablespoon olive oil Salt and pepper Cook pasta according to instructions on the package. Make sure the water is salted (at least a half teaspoon per quart). Remove pasta from heat and strain when pasta is cooked, but still firm (al dente). While the pasta is cooking, toast the pine nuts in a small pan over medium-high heat. Keep an eye on them because pine nuts can go from lovely and toasty to acrid and burnt in seconds. When most of the nuts have a blush of golden brown on them, move them to a cool bowl to rest. They will burn if you leave them in the pan. Put pasta in a big bowl. Mix in fresh basil pesto, green olives, and pine nuts. Gently mix in cherry tomatoes, peas, fresh basil leaves and olive oil. Salt and pepper to taste. Serve at room temperature. Love to you! Health & Beauty They also produce DHEA, the anti-aging hormone. It becomes obvious that the adrenal glands may not be able to keep up with all of the hormonal demands in menopause, especially if chronic or significant stress is part of your life. It is an important question to ask which of all of these hormones may be deficient, but it is also important to understand the interplay and interactions between them. Some hormones produce others, while some inhibit the production of others. Working with a naturopathic doctor is a great way to make sense of what can seem like a hormone puzzle. The easiest place to start is with salivary hormone testing, which tests all of the hormones mentioned here. After we know where your levels are at, we balance the body exactly where you need it with acupuncture, herbs and nutrients, and make dietary changes to support the body’s natural hormone production. The good news is that times of hormone transition and change are very responsive to naturopathic treatments, so you can get on with all of the other important things in your life! To hear more about your menopause type, attend my complimentary talk on August 25 for insights, tips, and an easy questionnaire to find out your menopause type! Dr. Keshia Kamphius Hope Clinic (See ad on this page and the front cover)
What is Your Menopause-Type? No two women are the same. And, no two experiences of menopause are the same. As we know, menopause is the cessation of a woman’s menstrual cycle. It means that the ovaries and uterus stop their hormonal production and activities. When that happens, the two hormones that are produced by the ovaries and uterus decline - these are estrogen and progesterone. Most health care practitioners tend to focus on adding in or balancing estrogen and progesterone when trying to reduce menopausal symptoms. While that can be an important part of treatment, menopause is actually about much more than estrogen and progesterone. There are a number of other hormones that, if out of balance, can drastically change your experience of menopause. The hormonal milieu of each woman is unique and until all of the imbalances are corrected, menopausal symptoms may persist. When we talk about your “menopause type”, we are talking about your individual combination of hormones such as estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, cortisol and DHEA. The most important hormone of these to mention is cortisol - one of our key stress hormones. Cortisol is produced by our adrenal glands in response to stress. If we are under chronic or significant stress before or during menopause, this can put increased demands on the adrenal glands. Perhaps normally this wouldn’t seem like a big problem, but in menopause the adrenal glands actually take over the production of estrogen and progesterone! They also produce testosterone, typically only considered a male hormone but important to maintain a healthy libido in women. Page 28

Pack it Light, Wear it Right
Pack it light
Although it is the middle of the summer, it’s time to start thinking about “Back to School”. The shopping begins for school supplies and new clothes. But before buying a new backpack, there are a few things you should know. A backpack that is too heavy or worn improperly can cause poor posture and distort the spinal column. These issues can then lead to back and neck pain, strained muscles, headaches, and even nerve damage.
• The total weight of the pack should not exceed 10 to 15 per cent of the wearer’s body weight (It’s 10% of body weight for grades k–8 and 15% for grades 9–12).
Many young people complain of some type of back pain before their teenage years. It is the job of chiropractors to educate children and their parents on the importance of back health and backpack safety. Here are some important points to consider:
• Pack the heaviest items close to the body.
Pick it right • Choose a bag made of lightweight material, such as vinyl or canvas. • Pick a bag that has two wide, adjustable and padded shoulder straps, along with a hip or waist strap, a padded back and plenty of pockets. • Ensure the bag is proportionate to body size and no larger than needed. The top of the pack should not extend higher than the top of the shoulder, and the bottom should not fall below the top of the hipbone. • Explore other options like bags with wheels and a pull handle for easy rolling. www.thenewsyneighbour.com
• Make sure the backpack contains only what is needed for the day or activity. • Spread the weight throughout the pack.
Wear it right • Both shoulder straps should always be used and adjusted so the pack fits snugly against the body. • The pack should sit two inches above the waist. • Never allow your child to sling a backpack over only one shoulder. • The waist strap reduces the strain on the back and transfers some of the load to the hips. If you have questions or are uncertain, bring your child and their new backpack to your chiropractor to have a look. They would be happy to help make sure that this school year gets off to the right start and stays that way Langdon Chiropractic (See their ad on page 9) The Newsy Neighbour

Oils for Back to School Well, it is August, which means that school will be returning to session in one warm, short month. Parents may be cheering and kids may be dreading, or vice versa. With every ounce of my being, I love summer. However, I think there is something to be said about getting back into routine and catching up with friends and family you may have not seen much of during the busy summer months. Pre-children, the end of August would feel like a dark cloud looming, knowing that the dog days of summer were quickly expiring, lazy days on the beach, fun days on the ball diamond and spontaneous road trips were quickly coming to an end for another year. However, after almost two full weeks away this summer with a toddler and a growing baby belly, I found myself looking forward to being home and getting back into routine. I quickly learned that just because we were home, it did not mean that my two year old knew it was time to be “back into routine.” As I reflected on my childhood, I knew that this was probably not abnormal. I remember the week before school starting having to go to bed before the sun set and getting up and getting dressed as some sort of back to school conditioning camp. School brings Page 30

needing a good night’s rest, concentration and focus despite having to sit in a desk all day, and for those who play sports, sore muscles as they recondition different muscle groups. As I always like to say, “There’s an oil for that!” Following are a list of oils that may help with your “back to school boot camp”:
Bedtime wind down I always like to have some calming oils in my diffuser going after dinner time to help my house start winding down. The aromatic influence of certain oils may help busy minds and bodies start slowing down for the evening. Sometimes mixing a combination of oils can be extremely beneficial. The blend I like in the evening in the diffuser and massaged into the bottoms of tiny feet consists of Blue Tansy, Patchouli, Tangerine, Orange and Ylang Ylang. This combination of oils may help promote relaxation, and a deep sense of peace and emotional well-being. This blend may help calm overactive children, as well as reduce depression, anxiety, stress and insomnia. A blend like this or similar is often easy to find; just ensure the blender is using pure, therapeutic grade oils.
Good Night, Sleep Tight! Lavender – Calming, relaxing, balancing both physically and emotionally, it has been found that inhalation of lavender oil increases beta waves in the brain, therefore suggesting heightened relaxation benefits. Cedarwood – Cedarwood is often referred to as the “sleepy oil.” Its fragrant influence is said to stimulate the limbic region of the brain, the pineal gland, which is responsible for the release of melatonin. It is repeatedly recognized for its calming properties. Some have even found it to be a great benefit in helping manage ADD and ADHD. www.thenewsyneighbour.com
Focus and Concentration Lemon – promotes clarity of thought and purpose. A 1995 Mie University study found that citrus fragrances boosted immunity, induced relaxation and reduced depression. Have kids rub on their hands and inhale, or rub on the body (behind the neck, on wrists). Peppermint – the fragrant influence of peppermint is very invigorating and clarifying. It may help increase mental accuracy.
Sore Muscles Peppermint – Rub directly on sore muscles to reduce inflammation and relieve pain. Copaiba – Copaiba is said to be a strong anti-inflammatory and is often used to relieve pain associated with arthritis, rheumatism and other muscular, ligament and tendon injuries. Although I feel as though I could go on and on about many oils and all related areas back to school brings, in the name of simplicity I will end here. Armed with these oils in your possession, I have great confidence you will be able to enjoy the end of summer and the beginning of the school year for all it is! Routine, beautiful leaves, warm, mild weather and a chance to reconnect with other sun-scorched globetrotters you missed so much over the busy summer!

4 WAYS YOU ARE SCREWING UP YOUR SUN EXPOSURE The sun is a major healing force and is responsible for sustaining life on this planet. However, in recent years, it is more recognized for its damaging effects than how it can positively affect someone’s health. This is due to an improper relationship with the sun; however, with some slight adjustments, that healing power can be recaptured so you don’t screw up your sun exposure. Acclimation and exposure There is a tendency to overdo it when exposing the body to the sun’s rays, and the result is often a skin damaging sunburn. When acclimating to the sun, start in the spring and create a protective tan with phased-in exposure. Melanin, the tanned skin pigment that is produced in the spring, prevents sunburn in the summer. It is a biological mechanism for photo-protection designed exclusively to maintain human’s healthy relationship with the sun. Melanin in the skin transforms 99.9% of absorbed UV radiation into heat that is easily dissipated, which effectively avoids radiation damage that contributes to cell damage. The best time of day to tan is early morning to solar noon. Expose at least your arms and legs, and do it without sunblock for at least 15 to 45 minutes. Use the heat and colour of the skin as a guide to get out and cover up. If you ever burn, aloe mixed with a drop or two of peppermint, lavender, or sea buckthorn offers soothing relief and quickens healing. Misuse of sunscreen Not only do synthetic sunscreens effectively block the healing benefits of the sun, they also become absorbed and baked into the skin, creating a whole host of potential health problems. Synthetic sunscreen creates a false sense of security by disabling the skin’ early detection system, the sunburn that gives fair warning of imminent danger. This results in overexposure to UV radiation, which effectively ruins the healing benefits and creates other health problems. Sunscreens block UVB rays, which are the rays required for proper vitamin D production. The interaction of the sun’s rays with skin activates the production of vitamin D, which scientists are just beginning to discover how much the body sorely needs. Consider only non-toxic sunscreens or botanical oils when sun exposure becomes too long and skin protection is necessary. Almost all plant oils offer some degree of ultraviolet protection to their own tissue – and ours. Officially, the term SPF can only be used to reference synthetic sunscreen ingredients, but plant oils do offer a range of protection that can gracefully Page 32
The Newsy Neighbour
extend our time in the sun. Plant oils of virgin coconut, jojoba, olive, and sea buckthorn applied to the skin can provide a measure of sun protection. Raspberry seed oil also has potential use as a broad range sun protectant. Under a spectrometer, raspberry seed oil absorbed both UVB and UVC rays while scattering UVA; it may provide an equivalent of SPF-25. Sunglasses overkill Sunglasses have now become mostly a fashion statement and the health consequences are concerning. The eyes need sunlight too, as it is the most direct path of communication to the brain and people’s health and mood depend on it. When a full spectrum of light rays is received by the retina, it is coded in the brain and sets in motion production of hormones and neurochemicals that keep people happy and healthy. The lens at the back of the eye, which stimulates the body’s master clock in the hypothalamus and pineal gland, absorbs the blue part of the sunlight spectrum. This in turn creates the production and release of melatonin, the circadian rhythm hormone that regulates sleep-wake cycles. It is also a powerful immune booster and anti-aging antioxidant that protects DNA and delays neuro-degeneration. Wearing sunglasses or being indoors blocks blue light reception and reduces the immune system benefits and nightly dose of melatonin. For these reasons, use sunglasses more sparingly and in more intense sunlight situations. Improper food choices The antioxidant content of food that is eaten on a consistent basis also has a determining effect on the chances of sunburn. The sun’s rays damage the skin through free radicals, which are responsible for premature aging and some cancers. Countering these free radicals with antioxidants is important in preventing damage such as sunburn and any related diseases it may promote. A high antioxidant diet of sun grown produce, herbs and supplements is the best form of internal sunscreen, and should be highly considered as part of a beneficial relationship with the sun. Summer is a great time to indulge in sun-ripened fruit, vegetables, and herbs that build an internal SPF. Tomatoes, for example, have demonstrated a 30% increase in sun protection after eating a tomato-rich diet. 16mg of lycopene, the red antioxidant found in tomatoes, seems to be the key. Other SPF foods include watermelon, green tea, turmeric, red, green, and yellow peppers, watermelon, and berries. Also, don’t forget the chocolate! Pure, unprocessed, and unadulterated chocolate has 4 times the amount of phenols and catechism as teas, and these compounds protect the skin against sunburn. Many of the skin issues that are called “sun damage” are really the result of malnutrition. The recipe for wrinkles and dark spots is our current standard diet of processed food grown in the shadows of pesticides and factory farming. The trans fats, plasticizers, bromide, formaldehyde, coal tar derivatives, colour and flavour additives, and fluoride, commonly found in processed foods, create reactions in our bodies that trigger collagen breakdown, inflammation, age spots, and hyper-pigmentation. One supplement that is highly revered for its antioxidant content and skin protective properties is astaxanthin. Consider it as part of your overall nutrition skin protection plan.
Now go and correct your relationship with the sun and enjoy the limitless benefits, without the side effects created by incorrect exposure. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Self-Help Tips Help Manage School Stress By Cynthia Barnesky
Another school year is just around the corner. For some, it can be a stressful time as it is usually full of firsts: first day of school, a new school, finding new friends or starting a new grade. Stress can cause many disorders for both parents and students, such as not sleeping, headaches, and eating too much or not enough and for some, it can even lead to anxiety or panic attacks. There are steps that both parents and students can take to reduce the stress. First, it is important to remember that stress is a choice; not a condition. We can choose to stay calm or get upset about the situations we are in. When we recognize that the idea of starting school is just a normal part of life and of growing up, we can handle it better. Try not to assume the worse or imagine things that probably won’t even happen. There is no reason the new school, next grade or new friends won’t be better than before. Take specific actions, as these will provide a feeling of being in control: - Be prepared and start getting organized sooner rather than later; this goes for both parent and student. - Discuss your fears with a parent or trusted friend. - As the school year progresses, focus on the things you enjoy.
Clear your mind and thoughts by taking a walk, listening to music or any activity that calms you. 2. Try a relaxation exercise of tightening and releasing all of your large muscle groups starting from your toes to your head; breathe while doing this exercise. 3. Massage and self-massage can also help relax the mind, body and soul making life feel a lot easier to handle. 4. If you suffer from anxiety or panic attacks, here is a self-help method through self-acupressure points and Positive Affirmations: “During an anxiety or panic attack, concentrate on breathing slowly and deeply while you hold the middle of the inside of the forearm, three finger-widths above the wrist crease. (These point helps relives nausea, anxiety, racing heartbeat, and wrist pain). It is also known to balance the inner being. Another good acupressure point: place your finger on the center of your breastbone, taking a deep breath in and out slowly while holding this point for a few minutes. (This point activates the thymus gland and is especially good for counteraction anxiety, nervousness, panic, anguish, hysteria, and other emotional imbalances). Second points are: Hold the upper outer chest area on both sides using three fingers below the collarbone. Hold these points firmly for a few minutes, while taking a deep breathe in and out slowly. (This can instantly calm an attack). Here are some affirmations to counteract anxiety or panic attacks: I let go of my expectations. I trust that I will be taken care of. I am at peace with myself in the present moment. I consciously breathe deeply and let go of any anxiety. I am safe and let go of what the future may bring. I hope that these tips and points will help make this upcoming school year more fun and manageable; and remember, before you know it, another year will be over!

without the B vitamins this conversion will not take place. Converting food into cellular energy takes multiple steps – i.e. thousands of chemical reactions. B vitamins act as co-factors – or helpers – in many of those reactions.
ARE YOU A B-liever? I want to tell you a little story about my health. Not that long ago I started to develop a shaking, trembling feeling in my body; it was almost as if I could feel it from the core of my body out through my legs and arms and, of course, the first thing you think is the worst: do I have a terrible disease? Was I developing Parkinson’s, epilepsy, cerebral palsy or some other scary nervous system condition? My doctor ran me through a gambit of tests and came up with absolutely nothing! Then the strangest thing happened; this is one of those clear examples of “no accidents in the universe”, which I absolutely believe in. I went to my friendly Value Drug Mart to buy some Vitamin C but I inadvertently walked out of the store with a Vitamin B complex. I know, I know… day dreaming. But in my defense I also bought evening primrose (by the way, all women should be taking this!), Omega 3 fish oil and some Zinc. So you can see how this could happen – I was buying quite a few different vitamins. So anyhow, I got home and threw all my vitamins into my vitamin basket and then noticed I had bought Vitamin B complex instead of Vitamin C. Ok, so because I believe in the “no accidents in the universe” theory, I just figured my body needs these B Vitamins or this would not have happened. Well, you all know what happened next? Yup, after just a few days of taking the Vitamin B complex, my inner shaking starting getting better and better every single day – no kidding.
It was a small miracle!! Obviously my body was very low in one of the B vitamins. There are quite a few B vitamins and my B vitamin complex includes every single one of them. There are B1 (Thiamine mononitrate), B2 (Riboflavin), B3 (Niacinamide), B5 (Calcium d-pantothenate), B6 (pyridoxine), B7 (biotin), B9 (folic acid) and B12 (cobalamin). Under the B vitamins, there is also choline, inositol and PABA. So I’m not really sure which of these my body needed or it could have been it just needed them all, I guess that is why they include them all in this complex.
The straight facts on B vitamins is that they give you energy and they are essential in the conversion of food to energy (ATP – the form of energy the cell uses) in every cell. Essential means absolutely necessary, therefore www.thenewsyneighbour.com
If you follow a well-balanced, healthy diet, you are likely getting enough of these vitamins. However marginal deficiencies of one or more of the B-vitamins are much more common than we think. Vitamin B supplementation is necessary if you have a marginal deficiency, or if you do not follow a wellbalanced, healthy eating plan. There are also certain individuals who could be B-deficient, like those who push themselves while exercising, if you are stressed or if you have a poor diet (e.g. consuming fast foods and refined carbs) or take regular medications, such as peptic acid blockers, anti-inflammatory painkillers, or antibiotics. The B-complex vitamins are water-soluble, meaning they easily dissolve in water. Due to this characteristic, the water-soluble vitamins (B and C) can dissolve in the urine. Therefore, if you take too much of these vitamins, it will be excreted in the urine. If a little of something is good for you, more isn’t necessarily better! So after I realized my body was obviously deficient in B vitamins, I started doing some research on all of them and found there is a ton of information out there on these vitamins. I found one site very informative and actually sent Dr. Arien van der Merwe, who lives in Pretoria South Africa, an email to ask her if I could use some of her research in this article. She sells a B Complex called Necessities, which is one of the world’s leading multivitamin & multimineral formulations, including a unique combination of high-dosage vitamin B complex. She sells all sorts of other health related products too; you can check out her website at www.drarien.co.za. So if anyone out there has an inner shaking thing going on, who knows! You just might be a little low in your B-vitamins! I’m a B-liever! (Not to be confused with a Belieber…) Kathryn Hartwell

WHAT IS VAPING? Do you ever question your health? Quite frankly, it is something I think about quite often. On July 22, it was one full year since I quit smoking and to tell you the truth, I never thought I would make it. The reason I have made it so far might surprise you. I’m “vaping”. It seems it is turning into quite the “thing” and like anything new, it is also causing quite the stir – is it safe? Well, I don’t know about any of that, but I think it is safer than smoking cigarettes, which have over 4,000 chemicals in tobacco smoke and at least 69 of those chemicals are known to cause cancer. While these ingredients are approved as additives for foods, they were not tested by burning them, and it is the burning of many of these substances that changes their properties, often for the worse. Carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, hydrogen cyanides and ammonia are all present in cigarette smoke. Forty-three known carcinogens are in mainstream smoke, side stream smoke or both. It’s chilling to think about not only how smokers poison themselves, but what others are exposed to by breathing in the secondhand smoke. The next time you’re missing your old buddy, the cigarette, remember: all they are is a delivery system for toxic chemical and carcinogens.

So what is “Vaping”? Well, according to “web definition,” it is an electronic cigarette, electronic vaping device, personal vapourizer, or electronic nicotine delivery system in an electronic inhaler meant to simulate and substitute tobacco smoking. It generally utilizes a heating element that vapourizes a liquid solution. In the beginning I used the liquid or e-juice that contained nicotine, but now I just use the liquid that contains absolutely no nicotine. Now, it has become just something I “puff on” at night while I am enjoying a glass of wine after dinner. I don’t know what it is about the vapour that comes from the e-cigarette, but it gives you a type of satisfaction. And by the way, the e-juice comes in all sorts of different flavours!! So what is e-juice? So now that you understand that “vaping” isn’t smoking, the next question most people have is, what’s in that liquid that’s being atomized into vapour? E-Liquid or e-Juice is normally composed of up to 5 ingredients. VG (Vegetable Glycerin), The Base, makes up 80-90% of e-juice and is composed of 100% VG or a mix with PG. Common ratios are 100% VG, 50/50 PG/VG, and 80/20 PG/VG. It is widely used in all types of food and personal care products like toothpaste. PG (Propylene glycol), commonly mixed with VG as the base for e-juice. This is a solvent that’s used in all sorts of things. Along with being a solvent, it’s mainly known for its use in fog machines. A higher PG mix e-juice will produce thicker clouds of vapour. However, PG can dry out your throat and even cause mild allergic reactions in some users. Flavour 10%-20%. All the e-juice I’ve seen uses food grade flavourings, originally intended for baking or candy making. My understanding is that all materials are food grade (where applicable) and adhere to standards set down in the USP, NF or FCC (U.S.Pharmacopoeia, National Formulary, and Food Chemical Codex).” 1. Nicotine 0%-2.4% depending on strength. Any large supplier of e-juice is using pharmaceutical grade pure nicotine. 2. Distilled water is sometimes used to dilute if needed. That’s it. From as little as 2 ingredients (VG and flavour) to as many as 5, and theories on nicotine ingestion notwithstanding, all used regularly in food products. Remember, the important thing is what e-juice doesn’t contain: the 4000+ chemicals in a cigarette. You may not have noticed, but these little counters are popping
up in every single shopping mall. They look quite secretive and there are no big signs or banners and I don’t know how the government is controlling these new businesses, but it seems there is a “no signage” clause. The megacorporations have their own brand of e-cigarettes you see at the gas stations, and I’ve tried a lot of them! There are so many different variations of these e-cigarettes and e-juices already; it’s crazy. It seems everyone has jumped on the bandwagon with new “vapourizers and e-juicers”. There is good and bad. Obviously, the safest thing to do is to quit smoking altogether. There are many questions left to be answered about e-cigarettes, since “vaping” is a rather new practice. One thing is certain, ecigarettes do not contain the 4000 toxic chemical that come from smoking the traditional cigarette. It’s like anything in life, you have got to figure it out on your own, but I know one thing for sure I smoked for many more years than I want to admit and these new e-cigarettes were the only thing that ever worked for me. I tried the pills and the other products that have been around forever, but I found that “vaping” gave me whatever I felt I was missing from having a cigarette in my hand, I didn’t have those panic attacks I would normally have when I was faced with the truth that I did not have a cigarette in the house to smoke. It worked for me and if you are finally on that path to where you finally want to give up those 4000 chemicals you are putting into your body – I’m just saying – it worked for me; it could work for you. LUSCIOUS JOYS I don’t know about you, but isn’t there just something luscious about a really yummy salad? Sometimes that is all we eat for supper; just a really good salad. Now, salads are one of those things where you can really use your imagination and there are literally hundreds of ingredients you can throw into your salad. Let me see… first, there are all sorts of different lettuce and greens choices including iceberg, romaine, arugula, butter lettuce, endive, chicory, escarole, radicchio, spinach, water crest and kale, just to mention a few. What about the never ending salad ingredients like cheese, tomato, bacon, egg, carrot, cucumber, chicken, onion, croutons, mushrooms, bell peppers, avocados, nuts, olives, sunflower seeds, ham, corn, turkey, apple, cabbage, broccoli, almonds, chick peas, strawberries, blueberries, steak, beans, cranberries, artichoke hearts, mandarin oranges, walnuts, pickled beets, shrimp, cauliflower, peas, celery, tuna, radishes, pasta, grapes, pepperoni, hemp seeds, pumpkin seeds, kiwi, anchovy’s and an endless list of herbs? I can see you are getting the picture here… a salad can become your very own work of art. And we have not even touched on the gazillion different salad dressings you can make from scratch. Now, just think about this a moment: every single one of the ingredients I have mentioned are healthy and contain essential vitamins and minerals needed to keep your body running at peak performance. After all, don’t we eat to stay healthy? We should! Here are a couple of my favourite supper salads. Just think about this for a minute: if you have just a salad for supper for just one or two nights a week you will not only feel great, but it could help you to drop a few pounds!
Broccoli Salad with Apples and Cranberries
• 4 cups fresh broccoli florets • 1/2 cup dried cranberries • 1/2 cup sunflower seeds • 3 organic apples • 1/4 cup red onion, chopped • 1 cup plain, low-fat yogurt with probiotic bacteria • 2 tablespoon Dijon style mustard • 1/4 cup honey Combine broccoli florets, dried cranberries, sunflower seeds, chopped apples, and chopped onion in a large serving bowl. Blend yogurt, mustard, and honey in a small bowl. Add dressing to the salad and toss. Chill before serving.
Nutty Caesar Salad
• 1 cup cubed French bread • 1 cup sliced almonds • 1 cup pecan halves • 2 tablespoon Olive oil • 2 tablespoon Freshly grated Parmesan cheese • 10 cups torn romaine lettuce Vinaigrette: • 3 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice (from 1 large lemon) • 4 tsp freshly grated Parmesan cheese • 1-1/2 tsp Dijon mustard • 1 small clove garlic, minced • 3/4 tsp Worcestershire sauce • 1/2 tsp anchovy paste (or 1 anchovy fillet, mashed) (optional) • 1/3 cup olive oil For Vinaigrette, mix together lemon juice, Parmesan cheese, mustard, garlic, Worcestershire, anchovy paste (if using) and oil. Store in jar in the refrigerator. Toss together bread, almonds, pecans, oil and Parmesan cheese. Arrange in single layer on foil-lined rimmed baking sheet. Bake in center of 350°F/180°C oven for about 12 minutes or until toasted and golden. Let cool. Gently toss bread-and-nut mixture with lettuce, and then gently toss in vinaigrette until coated. TIP: Try substituting a bunch of super-healthy kale for the romaine. Remember: you are what you eat! Kathryn Hartwell

Champions Return!
Back to school issue? Really? Where did the summer go? While parents rejoice, kids across the province are all screaming...”Nooooooo!”
No worries, because from a sports perspective, our summer is just getting started. The second annual Shaw Charity Classic takes place later this month at Canyon Meadows in Calgary, followed closely by the annual Labour Day Classic at McMahon stadium, the Tour of Alberta presented by ATB Financial and then it’s the start of training camp for the Calgary Flames. The Inaugural Shaw Charity Classic was nothing short of sensational. Despite a runaway win by Champions Tour rookie of the year Rocco Mediate, golf fans flocked to Canyon Meadows to watch the some of the biggest legends of the game.
Additionally, the tournament made a $2.27 million donation to flood recovery efforts and southern Alberta charities. That donation was the single largest charitable donation in Champions Tour Page 38

history. It was a no brainer when the Champions Tour named the Calgary stop one of the top events of the year, awarding the tournament the distinguished “Outstanding Achievement Award.” “Everybody loved the golf course,” said Mediate. “What
I like most was the turnout and the fan support. Besides our U.S. Open, it was the best atmosphere of the season.” So how do you top excellence? “It’s not going to be easy,” states tournament director Sean Van Kesteren. “However, I think our field is going to be stronger this year. We are going to make the golf course a little more challenging and our goal is to raise $2.5 million for charity.” “After the buzz this tournament received last year, it’ll be no problem getting the best players in the world,” says Mediate. That was confirmed last month as tour’s top player, two time Masters Champion Bernhard Langer confirmed his participation. The tour’s marquee name Freddie Couples rarely commits to a tournament www.thenewsyneighbour.com

6 weeks out, but that’s what he did for Calgary. “He said put me down, I’m coming,” laughs Van Kesteren. He had such a great experience last year he didn’t want to miss it even though he was having some issues with his back. As an added bonus for golf fans in Southern Alberta, the Shaw Charity Classic will also feature Calgary’s best known touring professional. Stephen Ames hit the magical 50 mark in April and the newly inducted Canadian Golf Hall of Fame member will have a great chance to win in his own backyard.
In all, 32 members of the World Golf Hall of Fame compete regularly on the Champions tour and many of those stars will be in Calgary the last weekend of August. Like the Shaw Charity Classic, the Inaugural Tour of Alberta was also an amazing success story. Canada’s largest professional cycling race featured athletes from 25 different countries including 2011 Tour de France winner Cadel

Some Real Estate Terms You Should Know! Preapproved
Make sure you’re preapproved before you shop for a home. Prequalification is just an estimate of what the lender thinks you can afford. Preapproval requires that you submit a loan application with the necessary documentation and fee. The preapproval letter assures you and prospective sellers and their agents that you can obtain a mortgage. Without it, they may not consider your offer.
Mortgage Insurance
Typically, lenders require mortgage loan insurance for loans made to anyone that wishes to purchase a home with less than 20% of the purchase price. The Canadian Bank Act prohibits most federally regulated lending institutions from providing mortgages without mortgage loan insurance for amounts that exceed 80% of the value of the home or purchases with less than 20% down payment. Through your lender, CMHC Mortgage Loan Insurance enables you to finance up to 95% of the purchase price of a home.
Amortization
The period of time required to reduce a debt to zero when payments are made regularly. Amortization periods are most often 15, 20, or 25 years long. www.thenewsyneighbour.com
Balanced Market
Where demand for property equals the supply of available property. Sellers usually accept reasonable offers and houses generally sell in sufficient time periods. Prices remain stable and there is usually a good number of homes to choose from.
Buyer’s Market
When there is a higher number of homes to choose from than buyers in comparison. Prices of homes tend to be lower and they remain available for sale longer. Buyers usually have more leverage in negotiating a purchase.
Seller’s Market
More buyers are looking for homes than there are homes for sale. There is a smaller inventory of homes available for sale and many buyers looking to purchase. House prices generally increase and homes sell quickly.
Holdback
An amount of money withheld by the lender during construction of a house to ensure that construction is satisfactory at every stage. A standard holdback is 10% of the total cost of the building project. The Newsy Neighbour

Green Sleep Remember when the term ‘going green’ meant something that had once been another colour, but had changed since living in the back of the fridge? Now, like many other words, common use has resulted in another meaning altogether. Even though ‘green’ seems to be the goal of many marketing initiatives, do you ever suspect that this refers more to image and revenue (as in ‘greenback’ – a term that refers to the U.S. dollar bill) than to the environment? In all fairness, there are some businesses/organizations that are more, (at least equally), concerned about the environment than the financial report. It seems a new study comes out daily that says something in our environment is either the new ‘wonder-cure’ or about to kill us. Before you lose sleep over the latest study results, remember: you can almost always find a study that either has a different result and/or agrees with your point of view. We should pay attention when a large number of credible independent studies agree on a set of results. A consistent result in many studies is the importance of sleep. Marketing knows this and has moved into the sleep support world with green initiatives. When looking for quality mattresses to support your sleep, some of the reasonable environmental (green) concepts to look for can be natural-based foams (like soy-based) may reduce concern about outgassing, and renewable resources. In a similar vein, latex-based foams offer excellent body support, are a renewable resource and have become the foam of choice in many mattresses and pillows. Page 46
The Newsy Neighbour
The fibres used in mattress covers (ticking), have also become ‘greener’ with bamboo, hemp and other low impact renewable fibre blends becoming popular. Many of the fibres and foams are also mite/bed bug resistant. The quality of a mattress can be a big ‘green’ factor. A mattress that was a great price but only lasts a couple of years may not be such a deal. Not only do you have to spend more to buy a new one, but now have to add to the landfill. Talk to your independent mattress retailer about your sleep support needs. They have to know their product, and since they live in the same environment you do, they just might have a vested interest in keeping it a healthy one! On the studies and results side, don’t forget that one study doesn’t make it a rule or even correct. In any study, take a critical look at who funded and conducted the study and who benefits from the results. How to do this? Easy – check out www.senseaboutscience.org (publications section) and ‘Is That a Fact’ by Mark Battersby (Canadian). You can take a closer look at some interesting ‘studies’ at www. skepticnorth.com and www.badscience.net . www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Fashion Meets Interior Design – Trends to Add to Your Home It is part of my job to be up to date on all the new and changing trends in the interior design industry. These new and upcoming trends are greatly influenced by the fashion world, colours, finishes, fabrics and patterns. Here are some subtle and sustainable ways to add some of these fashion/design trends to your home. Large graphic prints and botanicals – this is not an application in your home where it is repeated throughout; this is more of an accent piece. Just like a poppy and bright summer skirt, this would be a great way to upholster an accent chair or ottoman. Think bold chevron stripes or oversized floral brocade. Mixing metals – Brushed bronze, nickel, copper, brass and silver. These are the finishes that add some sparkle to your home

and mixing these elements together creates a very edgy and unique setting. By adding some of these pieces, the main thing to keep in mind is balance. Always correspond with the existing metal finishes in your home i.e.: hardware on your cabinets and lighting fixtures as well as your appliances. Always make sure that each additional metal finish is distributed evening throughout the space by repeating in metal art pieces – lamps and lighting and décor. Lighten up your walls – Heritage hues are a must in your space and in your closet. Not specifically feminine or masculine, but still airy and serene. Whether it is a pastel-toned watery grey blue for your main floor or a lilac under toned white for the perfect master bedroom hideaway. These pretty picks will add brightness to your space and allow your finishes, fabrics and décor to shine. Heavy and draped curtains may not be practical or everyone’s cup of tea, familiar to the flowy gown that you may need a couple times in your life, but the vision of airy sheer drapes will do the trick. Nothing gives a more relaxed yet elegant feel to a space than crisp white sheers that diffuse the light beautifully into the space and create a breezy and relaxed atmosphere. Just like fashion, it is all open to interpretation and individual style and not everything is for everyone. By using the elements that speak to your fashion style in your home, you are sure to create an ever evolving, eclectic look in your space which is 100% you.

Want to get your home ready to sell? First, you need to look at your house in a new way.
not be able to visualize what your home will look like when the work is finished.
Think of your house as a “product” about to go on the market where it will be competing with new construction homes. It needs to show well – which means clutter-free and well kept.
Potential buyers will just remember it being in a state of disrepair.
Today’s homebuyers lead busy lives and may not be willing to take on major repairs or improvements upon moving in. You need to make your house a “10”. You need to be able to spot what is right and what is not so good about your “product”. By being able to look at your house as a “product,” it will give you the opportunity to take corrective action to ensure your house looks fresh, clean and well maintained when the “For Sale” sign goes up.
How does your home look from the street? That is where prospective buyers will be when they first see your home; and, that is where they will form that allimportant first impression. If you were a buyer driving by your home would you want to go into the house? Would you want to buy the house?
2) If It Needs Fixing, Fix It If you need to make improvements to your home, do the work before it goes on the market. Potential buyers are not interested in hearing about your good intentions to look after defects before a transfer of ownership takes place. Even if fix-up work is underway, buyers may www.thenewsyneighbour.com
3) Check Your Curb Appeal
Remove yourself from the emotional bond you have with your home and look at it with fresh eyes. How does it look in comparison to your neighbours? Does it need to be cleaned up? Greened up? Snow shovelled? How can you make it more welcoming? Remember your curb appeal is the first impression. The Real Estate Reps (See their ad on the back cover) The Newsy Neighbour

are obviously coming from ingestion, but our skin is our biggest organ and will absorb what comes in contact with it. Fortunately, many parents do lock up their household cleaners; the big warning signs on the bottles helped with that! However, there are a lot more household products that are threats to our children and must be kept out of reach, if not completely eliminated. Here is a list of some of the everyday household products that can be severely harmful or poisonous:
Bath & Body
Toxic Household Products Poisonings in Children Caused By Toxic Household Products Our children’s health and safety is every parent’s priority. We make sure they eat enough fruits and vegetables, go to bed early, brush their teeth and wash their hand. But despite all those precautions, a child is poisoned at home every 30 seconds in the U.S., with 80% of them being under four years of age. If you think that accidental poisoning can only happen to others, think again! I forgot once to lock the medicine cabinet in my bathroom and in a matter of seconds, my baby girl, who was about 2 at the time, found the infant acetaminophen and ingested what was left in the bottle (about one third). Fortunately, the Poison Control Center said that even if the bottle had been full, there is not enough of the active ingredient to harm a child. From this day on, I stopped complaining about the bottle being so small... As soon as my first child began to crawl, I became concerned about the potential dangers of household cleaners. Not only could these dangerous products be reached through open cupboards, but my child was also more in contact with surfaces where these products were used. Dangers of cleaning products
All cosmetics and skin care products, toothpaste and mouthwash, antiperspirant and deodorant, shampoo and conditioner, hairspray, and other styling aids, soap and body wash, sunscreen, perfume and cologne, bubble bath, hand and body lotion, and baby oil.
Medicine cabinet All medication, prescribed or over the counter.
Cleaning Products Air freshener and deodorizer, disinfectants, laundry detergents, stain removers, fabric softeners, chlorine bleach, spray starch, dishwashing soap and dishwasher detergent, multi-purpose cleaner, toilet bowl cleaner, and furniture polish.
Other Batteries, toxic plants, mothballs In summary, the first step to keeping our children safe it to be aware of the different products that can harm them. We can then take preventive actions instead of having to deal with disastrous consequences By Sophie Gratton Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/8568407 http://mywellnesssolution.weebly.com/toxic-household-products.html
