Why Did the Chicken Cross the Road?

GEORGE W. BUSH - We don’t really care why the chicken crossed the road. We just want to know if the chicken is on our side of the road or not. The chicken is either with us or it is against us. There is no middle ground here. AL GORE - I invented the chicken. I invented the road. Therefore, the chicken crossing the road represented the application of these two different functions of government in a new, reinvented way designed to bring greater services to the American people. SADDAM HUSSEIN - This was an unprovoked act of rebellion and we were quite justified in dropping 50 tons of nerve gas on it. MARTHA STEWART - No one called to warn me which way that chicken was going. I had a standing order at the farmer’s market to sell my eggs when the price dropped to a certain level. No little bird gave me any insider information. DR. SEUSS - Did the chicken cross the road? Did he cross it with a toad? Yes, the chicken crossed the road, but why it crossed, I’ve not been told! ERNEST HEMINGWAY - To die. In the rain. Alone. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. - I envision a world where all chickens will be free to cross roads without having their motives called into question.

Why Did the Chicken Cross the Road?

GRANDPA - In my day, we didn’t ask why the chicken crossed the road. Someone told us that the chicken crossed the road, and that was good enough for us. BARBARA WALTERS - Isn’t that interesting? In a few moments we will be listening to the chicken tell, for the first time, the heartwarming story of how it experienced a serious case of molting and went on to accomplish its life-long dream of crossing the road. JOHN LENNON - Imagine all the chickens crossing roads in peace. KARL MARX - It was an historical inevitability. CAPTAIN KIRK - To boldly go where no chicken has gone before. BILL GATES - I have just released eChicken 2012, which will not only cross roads, but also will lay eggs, file your important documents, and balance your checkbook - and Internet Explorer is an inextricable part of eChicken. ALBERT EINSTEIN - Did the chicken really cross the road or did the road move beneath the chicken? BILL CLINTON - I did not cross the road with THAT chicken. What do you mean by ‘chicken’? Could you define ‘chicken’, please? COLONEL SANDERS - I missed one?

From the Publishers

The hot summer days and the warm October evenings are all but just a memory. The chilly frosty mornings are here to stay and I see snow in our future; that’s an easy prediction. We are excited to have a new columnist starting this month – Maureen Macdonald is the plant lady and she will be a great new addition to the magazine. If you have any plant questions, just send them in and Maureen will help you out. Make sure you check out the Family Page this month and get your creative juices flowing! We are looking for your poems to publish on the new “Words of Art” page – you too can be a published writer. Now, don’t forget to attend the Remembrance Day ceremony at the Civic Centre on November 11th. All of the information regarding times and the daylong events are on page 13. The Strathmore Legion and the veterans go above and beyond to make this a very special day, and please don’t forget to donate to the annual Poppy campaign, reminding Canadians of the 117,000 men and women who gave their lives in the wars and military missions around the world. Poppy funds collected are used for assistance to veterans, ex-service members and their families who are in need. So don’t just walk by – show that you care and support the poppy fund. Did you know you were made of stardust? Read all about it in My Favourite – Fabulous – Fantastic & Fun stuff on page 24 – very cool! Our December Issue next month is our 50th Issue – how exciting is that?! So, in celebration of this huge milestone, and because it is Christmas, The December Issue will have a few surprises, like more gloss and exciting promotions and gifts for the advertisers! Enjoy the magazine and have an incredible November! Kathryn Hartwell, Aleesha Gosling and Denise Geremia

The Sea Gull

I was at the beach with my children when my four-year-old son ran up to me, grabbed my hand, and led me to the shore, where a sea gull lay dead in the sand. 'Mommy, what happened to him?' the little boy asked. 'He died and went to Heaven,' I replied. My son thought a moment and then said, 'And God threw him back down?'

Remembrance Day: Lest we forget. A day set aside to honour sacrifice The red remembrance poppy has become a familiar emblem of Remembrance Day due to the poem In Flanders Fields. These poppies bloomed across some of the worst battlefields of Flanders in World War I, their brilliant red colour an appropriate symbol for the blood spilt in the war.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

Keeping the Memory Alive

Strathmore #10 Royal Canadian Legion With over 340,000 members the Legion is one of Canada’s largest community based service organizations contributing millions of dollars and volunteer hours. They are responsible for the perpetuation of “REMEMBRANCE” in Canada through the Annual Poppy Campaign - reminding Canadians of the 117,000 men and women who gave their lives in the wars and military missions around the world. Poppy funds collected are used for assistance to veterans, ex-service members and their families who are in need. The Strathmore #10 Royal Canadian Legion is the second oldest branch in Alberta and celebrated 85 years since receiving their charter on Oct. 8, 1926. Previous to 1926 the Legion was known as the Great War Veterans’ Association. On Remembrance Day, November 11, the Legion holds a memorial service to remember the nation’s losses.

The ceremony starts at 10:30 A.M. at the Civic Centre and lasts until 12:30. There are guest speakers and the cadets and R.C.M.P. donate their time to the ceremony, placing the wreaths. What a sight to behold as all the veterans will be in uniform – my chest wells with pride just thinking of it. The moment of remembrance begins with the bugling of “Last Major John McCrae Post” “ immediately before 11:00 a.m.with two minutes of Mayor John McCrae was a Canadian doctor serving in the mili- silence and ending with the playing of a lament, the bugling of “The Rouse” and the reading of the Act of Remembrance. tary. Remembrance Day marks the anniversary of the official end of the World War I, on that date in 1918, as the major hostilities of World War I were formally ended “at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month” with the German signing of the Armistice. World War I was a massive conflict played out over the whole world, but particularly in Europe, where troops from Canada supported the Allied forces. World War I resulted in the loss of huge numbers of lives amongst both civilians and military personnel. The war left great emotional scars in the servicemen who had experienced it, and in the communities, whose sons, brothers, fathers, uncles and even grandfathers had died. Remembrance Day commemorates those who died in armed conflicts, particularly in and since World War I. In Canada, November 11th is officially called Remembrance Day, but it is also known as Armistice Day and Poppy Day. Remembrance Day is commemorated in many countries, particularly members of the Commonwealth, including Australia and New Zealand (where it is also referred to as Armistice Day). In the United States, Veterans Day falls on the same date. In the United Kingdom, the Sunday closest to November 11th is known as Remembrance Sunday. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

The Act of Remembrance is generally a solo reading of the poem, with a response by all assembled. The exact wording of the Act of Remembrance is:

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. RESPONSE: We will remember them Following the ceremony at the Civic Centre, all are welcome to attend the Field of Honour ceremony at the Strathmore Cemetary and finishing at the Legion with chili and buns. All are compliments of the Strathmore Legion. The afternoon will be spent sharing stories and comradship with all the veterans and friends. There will be a band playing wonderful old tunes and a truly fulfilling day will be had by all in attendance.

Things Stressed People Say 1. Well this day was a total waste of make-up. 2. Well, aren’t we a darn ray of sunshine? 3. Don’t bother me. I’m living happily ever after. 4. Do I look like a people person? 5. This isn’t an office. It’s hell with fluorescent lighting. 6. I started out with nothing and still have most of it left. 7. Therapy is expensive. Popping bubble wrap is cheap. You choose. 8. Why don’t you try practicing random acts of intelligence and senseless acts of self-control? 9. I’m not crazy. I’ve just been in a very bad mood for 30 years. 10. Sarcasm is just one more service I offer. 11. Do they ever shut up on your planet? 12. I’m not your type. I’m not inflatable. 13. Stress is when you wake up screaming and you realize you haven’t gone to sleep yet. 14. Back off!! You’re standing in my aura. 15. Don’t worry. I forgot your name, too. 16. I work 45 hours a week to be this poor? 17. Not all men are annoying. Some are dead. 18. Wait... I’m trying to imagine you with a personality. 19. Chaos, panic and disorder ... my work here is done. 20. Ambivalent? Well, yes and no. 21. You look like crap. Is that the style now? 22. Earth is full. Go home. 23. I’m not tense; I’m just terribly, terribly alert. 24. You are depriving some village of an idiot. 25. If dummies could fly, this place would be an airport. 26. Look in my eyes... It’s what you make ot if!

Whenever I’m disappointed with my spot in life, I stop and think about little Jamie Scott. Jamie was trying out for a part in the school play. His mother told me that he’d set his heart on being in it, though she feared he would not be chosen. On the day the parts were awarded, I went with her to collect him after school. Jamie rushed up to her, eyes shining with pride and excitement. ‘Guess what, Mom,’ he shouted, and then said those words that will remain a lesson to me; ‘I’ve been chosen to clap and cheer.’

discouraged

On my way home one day, I stopped to watch a Little League base ball game that was being played in a park near my home. As I sat down behind the bench on the first-base line, I asked one of the boys what the score was ‘We’re behind 14 to nothing,’ he answered with a smile. ‘Really,’ I said. ‘I have to say you don’t look very discouraged.’ ‘Discouraged?’, the boy asked with a puzzled look on his face. ‘Why should we be discouraged? We haven’t been up to bat yet.’

November Family Page When cold, snowy, icy weather comes your way, resist the urge to hide inside! Winter offers lots of opportunities for fun family fitness so pull on those mittens and get outdoors! It's great when kids are active in any way, but being outside is special. It's an amazing time of year and it's fun! Go sledding or snow tubing in your backyard, a local park or golf course (if it’s allowed!), or at a designated tubing hill. You don't even need a sled – just a piece of cardboard or sturdy plastic does the job (do consider having your child wear a helmet, though). Make a snow fort, snowman, or angel. Use a snow shovel to create a twisting, turning maze. Adapt summer backyard games for snow play: Frisbee, soccer, tag, hide and seek, or follow the leader. Break out sand toys (buckets, scoops, and molds) for snow castles and other creations. Don’t forget, in December and January daylight hours are limited. By the time kids get home from school, the sun's going down. How about equipping them with flashlights, camping lanterns, or coolest of all headlamps? Your biggest challenge will be getting them to come inside for dinner!

Write a Poem

There will be those days that will make it impossible to go outside, afterall we do live in Alberta – for those days get your childs creative juices flowing and write poems. I know sounds a little boring, but really this can be fun and there are a lot of poetry contests on the web for adults and children alike. Let your child win a poetry contest and then see what happens – an artist is born. Now writing poetry isn’t as hard as it seems you just need to get them started with "poetry ideas," - suggestions to get them started. Start by asking questions of a mysterious and beautiful creature or an invitation to a strange place full of colors and sounds. Poems about wishes, dreams, colors, animals, dragons, fairies, suggest ways of organizing the poem: for the Wish Poem, starting every line with "I wish". To help them think about the difference between the present and the past, suggest alternating line-beginnings of "I used to" and "But now". For a Color Poem - the name of a color in every line. These formal suggestions help with some kind of repetition, which is natural to children's speech and much easier for them to use in expressing their feelings. To help you create ideas for your child and you – mom and dad just might have a hidden writer inside – and by the way we want you – all of you to send your poems to us because we are starting The “WORDS OF ART” page in the December Issue. So pitter – patter and be the first poet to be published in our new special section – this is going to be fun!

OK. here are some more ideas to get your family started on the road to creativity!

Go for a walk

A walk with no talking allowed can be a fun way to learn to observe and harvest ideas. Take a notepad and pencil and go on a timed walk outside and write down a list of things you see. Bright coloured things, high things, low things, things that make you wonder.

People Watch

People watching can give you tons of good ideas. Sit with notebook in a public place and jot down notes about the people you see and hear. The man with a red ball cap, a boy with a skull on his t-shirt, a girl wearing house slippers, a lady in a purple dress and red shoes. Don't try to write poems on your outing, just write notes of things and people who interest you.

Photo gazing is looking through family albums and photo boxes for memory's sake. Looking at old photos will give your mind a chance to recall events that may be poem starters. Try cutting stray pictures from a magazine. Paste these on to a piece of paper and try to come up with an idea about each picture. For example, a picture of a brown dog might give you just the idea for a poem about a pet!

Listen to music

Listen to music like calm nature-type stuff with ocean waves and rain storms, or bird sounds. This type of mood music can be listened to with closed eyes, and let your mind envision the places as you hear the music. Is it night or day? Is it cold, hot, raining, snowing, a pretty place? Are you lost? Are you alone? Is a child there? An animal? Let your imagination go and then write a poem about the scenes you imagine. With the help of these poetry ideas, along with an inspiring atmosphere, ask your children to spell the words the best they can and not to worry about their spelling. With a good deal of praise and encouragement, they may come to love writing poetry as much as they like drawing and painting… and sometimes, even more so! “The way I feel about art is nothing compared to the way I feel about poetry. Poetry has something that art doesn't have and that's feelings....” – a grade 6 poet! Families that share special times together writing instead of sitting in front of the T.V. will have a special closeness and understanding of one another; the excitement of writing helps children find perceptions, ideas, feelings, and new ways of saying things – that goes for mom and dad, too! By inspiring your children, you just never know what will happen! You may just have a truly creative natural writer on your hands. Show your kids the possibilities and anything can happen! Henry Burris is not done yet!

“Sometimes change is necessary, sometimes change is dangerous.” I found this to be a very interesting quote from Stampeder head coach and general manager John Hufnagel on the day he benched the 2010 Most Outstanding Player in the CFL and handed the starting quarterback job to Drew Tate. Was this a panic move, a necessary move or a dangerous move? Although it’s a move I certainly don’t agree with, I do have to respect the decision by the coach. However, let this be a warning, Stampeder fans; Henry Burris is far from done in the Canadian Football League! His days may be numbered in Calgary, but he is still one of the top four quarterbacks in the league. I certainly don’t want to say Burris has been mistreated here in Calgary, but I do find it interesting that he is such a lightning rod for the fans. Burris brought this organization a championship, he lives in Calgary year round and next to Jarome Iginla, he is the most recognizable athlete in this city. Iginla has not brought a championship to the Flames, he bolts in the summer and while he does give back financially to charity, he is not nearly as active or visible in the community as Burris. It was no secret to anyone who followed the league last year that Jim Barker and the Toronto Argonauts were in the market for a quarterback. They were planning to make an offer to Drew Tate in free agency, but when the Stamps snuffed out that plan by signing Tate to a four year deal, the Argos set their sights on the 2008 Grey Cup MVP. The rumour mill was churning that the Stamps had asked Henry Burris to take a pay cut. Ricky Ray had just taken a haircut from the Eskimos and the Stamps thought their star would follow suit with a similar hometown discount. When Burris refused, the trade talks heated up. The Stampeders knew it would be a public relations disaster to trade Burris last spring, so the Argos had to settle for a terrible trade with the Bombers for Steven Jyles. Fast forward ten months and it’s no longer a public relations disaster for the Stampeders. For all the fans (or Henry haters as I like to call them), you will get your wish in the off season. In a salary cap world, the Stampeders can’t have a backup quarterback making close to a half a million dollars. Burris is heading into the option year of his contract and there is no question in my mind he will be a member of the Argonauts next season. He Page 18

The Newsy Neighbour

will likely even take a pay cut so the Argos can also dip into the free agent market as Jim Barker will attempt to load up for a shot at the 100th Grey Cup being hosted in Toronto. Speaking of Trades It’s time for the Calgary Flames to start making some tough decisions. As I have mentioned in this space many times, is this organization still in denial? Does the brain thrust really believe this is a playoff team? Flames GM Jay Feaster has no choice but to start shopping his two biggest assets Miika Kiprusoff and Jarome Iginla. Although both players have no trade clauses in their contracts, I am told both would waive under the right circumstances. The Flames may have blown a great opportunity earlier this year at the NHL trading deadline. The Los Angeles Kings were very interested in Iginla. My sources say the Kings were offering a package that included World Junior star Brayden Schenn, former first round pick Thomas Hickey, a first round pick and a prospect in the farm. Instead the Kings made a bad trade with the Oilers for Dustin Penner and Schenn is now a member of the Philadelphia Flyers as he was packed with Wayne Simmons in the Mike Richards deal. It’s unlikely the Flames will be offered similar value one year later but the Flames captain can still be a major difference maker on a good team and he deserves to win a Stanley Cup before his career is over! Outstanding player awards Although I don’t get a vote, here are my picks for the Calgary Stampeder nominees for outstanding player awards: Outstanding player - Nik Lewis Canadian - Jon Cornish Defence - Keon Raymond Offensive Lineman - Dimitri Tsoumpas Rookie - Junior Turner Special Teams - Larry Taylor

Teacher Debbie Moon’s first graders were discussing a picture of a family. One little boy in the picture had a different hair colour than the other members. One of her students suggested that he was adopted. A little girl said, ‘I know all about adoption, I was adopted.’ Another child asked, ‘What does it mean to be adopted?’. ‘It means’, said the girl, ‘that you grew in your mommy’s heart instead of her tummy!’

The Big Sissy

One summer evening during a violent thunderstorm, a mother was tucking her small boy into bed. She was about to turn off the light when he asked with a tremor in his voice, “Mommy, will you sleep with me tonight?” The mother smiled and gave him a reassuring hug. “I can’t dear,” she said. “I have to sleep in Daddy’s room.” A long silence was broken at last by a shaken little voice saying, “The big sissy.”

Why Brides wear White

Attending a wedding for the first time, a little girl whispered to her mother, “Why is the bride dressed in white?” “Because white is the colour of happiness, and today is the happiest day of her life.” The child thought about this for a moment, then said, “So why is the groom wearing black?”

Whatever comes to mind

The minister decided to do something a little different one Sunday morning. He said ‘Today, in church, I am going to say a single word and you are going to help me preach. Whatever single word I say, I want you to sing whatever hymn comes to your mind.’ The pastor shouted out, ‘Cross!’ Immediately the congregation started singing in unison, ‘The Old Rugged Cross.’ The pastor hollered out ‘Grace!’ The congregation began to sing ‘Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound.’ The pastor said ‘Power.’ The congregation sang ‘There is Power in the Blood’ The Pastor said ‘Sex.’ The congregation fell in total silence. Everyone was in shock. They all nervously began to look around at each other afraid to say anything. Then all of a sudden, way from in the back of the church, an eighty-seven year old grandmother stood up and began to sing ‘Precious Memories.

Christmas money saving tips:

Do you really need to spend a lot of money on wrapping paper that will just be ripped up and thrown away? No, you don’t! There are lots of great substitutes, including your trusty Newsy Neighbour, other colourful magazines, the comic section of our local newspaper, or children’s artwork! “I forgot to buy for…” gifts: it is not uncommon to get the call the day before Christmas that someone else will be joining you for Christmas dinner or to realize that you forgot to put someone on your shopping list. Rather than rushing out to buy a gift, consider buying a couple of generic gifts specifically for this purpose - a gift card to a local store, a box of chocolates or movie passes. Make a budget and STICK to it. Go in on a gift with someone else or don’t buy that ‘gift to impress’ this year. It is really not necessary and rarely impresses enough to make the sleepless nights about the credit card bill worth it! Remember: it’s not about how much a gift costs; it’s about the thought behind the gift. Have you ever seen that episode of the Big Bang Theory where Sheldon purchased a lot of baskets for Penny to try and match how much she spent on him, only to give her all of the baskets when she gave him a napkin signed by Leonard Nimoy? The signed napkin cost Penny nothing, yet meant everything to Sheldon. Stick with thoughtful, inexpensive gifts. And second-hand is not considered taboo. Check your local Buy-Sell-Trade Facebook page, Kijiji.ca, or go to a good, old-fashioned garage sale. Clean, working toys are perfect gifts for children (they don’t care if it’s new or old!), and you could find some real steals for others on your gift-giving list, as well! Have fun and enjoy the holiday season! www.thenewsyneighbour.com

1. Determine where in your home you will display your tree. With this in mind, you will be able to tell how tall a tree you will need and whether all four sides must be suitable for display. 2. Freshness is an important key when selecting your tree. The needles should be resilient. Take hold of a branch about six inches from the tip, between thumb and forefinger. Pull your hand toward you allowing the branch to slip through your fingers. Needles should adhere to the branch and not fall off in your hand. 3. Bend a needle between your forefinger and thumb. The needle should form a “U” without breaking unless the tree is frozen. 4. Lift the tree a couple of inches off the ground then bring it down abruptly on the stump end. Older outside needles should not fall in substantial numbers, (inside needles shed naturally every year). 5. The tree should have a fragrance and a good green colour. 6. A fresh tree will retain its moisture content and thereby keep its fragrance and needles if kept in a stand that has good water holding capacity.

HOW TO SELECT A CHRISTMAS TREE

Gold Standard Events

Although an artificial tree may automatically seem like the most ecological solution for the holiday season, the reality is more subtle. In fact, it is preferable instead to choose a natural tree. Christmas Trees and the environment: Canadian Christmas Tree growers work closely with the soil and trees. Like everybody, they want to work in a healthy, sustainable environment. Considering their product takes 6-15 years to mature and bring to market, sustainability is very important to their industry as the environment directly affects their livelihood. Bringing a coniferous Christmas tree into the home has been a tradition celebrated in Northern countries around the globe for over 40 years. Recycled Christmas trees allow your community to continue benefitting from the suns energy that is stored in the tree. The Christmas tree industry creates thousands of jobs in Canada’s rural regions and brings a beautiful product to market that is an integral part of our heritage. Colorants: As opposed to most greenery businesses, Christmas trees are harvested in a dormant state, unlike blooming flowers. In the fall, depending on the species, trees will sometimes change colour to conserve energy. To enhance the natural colour of the trees, growers will at times us a colorant. All colorants used are approved by Health Canada’s PMRA. Buying a real Christmas tree does not deplete the forest. It is like buying food or fibre products and in the case of Christmas trees, the product is completely recyclable. Artificial Christmas trees cannot be recycled or turned into mulch. The PVC and lead content of artificial trees will remain in landfills for many generations to come. Trees are the lungs of the Earth. Christmas trees sequester carbon and produce oxygen. In Canada, over 37,600 hectares, (82,700 acres) were dedicated to Christmas tree production in 2001. The majestic beauty and natural bouquet of a real Christmas tree fills our senses and our homes. This significant tree, with its sense-tingling qualities, is brought in only once a year and helps us endure the rigors of winter. The bi-mass of recycled and reused Christmas trees allow us to continue to benefit and profit from the suns accumulated energy.

MY FAVOURITE – FABULOUS – FANTASTIC AND FUN STUFF This is cool – did you know you were made of stardust? Most of the elements found in the human body originated in stars; we are literally made of stardust! How fun is that?! I feel special! I love the universe, stars, comets and fantastic planets far away – they are so fabulous! I remember, as a kid growing up in a small town, at night we would take a blanket and lay on the front lawn and look up at all the stars, always thinking in the back of my mind the words “the universe goes on forever” and wondering how that is even possible. It has no end; it is forever and ever. It’s one of those things that are hard to grasp and observations made on galaxies farthest from us show that the universe is expanding at an accelerated rate. My sister is always watching different sites on the web about comets and such and she was telling me the other day about a comet “Elenin.” Elinin is a celestial mass that has caused many rumours about the catastrophic danger to earth, but in reality the comet was never a threat. It will come within a whole 22 million miles (35 million km) to Earth – nothing to worry about! And, what about this new theory that apparently, the world is going to end on December 21st, 2012? Yes, you read that correctly. In some way, shape or form, the Earth (or at least a large portion of humans on the planet) will cease to exist. Stop planning worrying, and be sure to spend the last moments of your life doing something you always wanted to do but never had the time. So what is all this crazy talk? We’ve all heard these doomsday predictions before, yet we’re still here, and the planet is still here why is 2012 so important? Well, the Mayan calendar stops at the end of the year 2012, churning up all sorts of religious, scientific, astrological and historic reasons why this calendar foretells the end of life. The Mayan Prophecy is gaining strength and appears to be worrying people in all areas of society. When something ends (even something as innocent as an ancient calendar), people seem to think up the most extreme possibilities for the end of civilization as we know it. A brief scan of the internet will pull up the most popular, to some very weird ways that we will, with little logical thought, be wiped off the face of the planet. Archaeologists and mythologists on the other hand believe that the Mayans predicted an age of enlightenment when 13.0.0.0.0 comes around; there isn’t actually much evidence to suggest doomsday will strike. If anything, the Mayans predict a religious miracle, not anything sinister. “…When a calendar comes to the end of a cycle, it just rolls over into the next cycle. In our Western society, every year 31 December is followed, not by the End of the World, but by 1 January. So 13.0.0.0.0 in the Mayan calendar will be followed by 0.0.0.0.1 – or good-ol’ 22 December 2012, with only a few shopping days left to Christmas.” – Excerpt from Dr Karl’s “Great Moments in Science”. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

MY FAVOURITE – FABULOUS – FANTASTIC AND FUN STUFF CONT...

Here are some really cool facts about the universe in which you live: 1) Current estimates as with regards to the size of the Universe peg it at a width of 150 billion light years. 2) As late as 1820, the universe was thought by European scientists to be 6,000 years old. It is now thought to be about 13,700,000,000 years old. 3) A “light year” is a measure of distance, not time. It is defined as the distance light travels in one year. Light moves at a velocity of about 300,000 kilometres each second, so in one year, it travels about 9,500,000,000,000 kilometres. 4) It is not possible to hear in space. Because there is no atmosphere in space to conduct the sound, it would not carry. So, the object would make a noise, but it would not carry to any receiver, and no one would hear it. 5) There are an estimated 100-200 billion galaxies in the universe, with the typical galaxy containing an estimated 500 billion stars. In other words, there could be a galaxy out there for every star in the Milky Way. 6) The star Betelgeuse, a bright star in the constellation of Orion, is estimated to have a diameter of around 700 million miles. If it were placed at the centre of our solar system, it would extend beyond the orbit of Jupiter. 7) Most of the elements found in the human body originated in stars; we are literally made of stardust. Diary OF A SNOW SHOVELER December 8 - 6:00 PM: It started to snow. The first snow of the season and the wife and I took our cocktails and sat for hours by the window watching the huge soft flakes drift down from heaven. It looked like a Grandma Moses Print. So romantic we felt like newlyweds again. I love snow! December 9: We woke to a beautiful blanket of crystal white snow covering every inch of the landscape. What a fantastic sight! Can there be a lovelier place in the whole world? Moving here was the best idea I’ve ever had! Shovelled for the first time in years and felt like a boy again. I did both our driveway and the sidewalks. This afternoon the snowplough came along and covered up the sidewalks and closed in the driveway, so I got to shovel again. What a perfect life! December 12: The sun has melted all our lovely snow... such a disappointment! My neighbour tells me not to worry- we’ll definitely have a white Christmas. No snow on Christmas would be awful! Bob says we’ll have so much snow by the end of winter, that I’ll never want to see snow again. I don’t think that’s possible. Bob is such a nice man, I’m glad he’s our neighbour. December 14: Snow, lovely snow! 8 inches last night. The temperature dropped to -20. The cold makes everything sparkle. The wind took my breath away, but I warmed up by shovelling the driveway and sidewalks. This is the life! The snowplough came back this afternoon and buried everything again... I didn’t realize I would have to do quite this much shovelling, but I’ll certainly get back in shape this way. I wish I wouldn’t huff and puff so! December 15: 20 inches forecast. Sold my van and bought a 4x4 Blazer. Bought snow tires for the wife’s car and 2 extra shovels. Stocked the freezer. The wife wants a wood stove in case the electricity goes out. I think that’s silly. We aren’t in Alaska , after all. December 16: Ice storm this morning. Slipped on the ice and fell on my butt while sprinkling salt. Hurts a lot. The wife laughed for an hour, which I think was very cruel. December 17: Still way below freezing. Roads are too icy to go anywhere. Electricity was off for 5 hours. I had to pile the blankets on to stay warm. Nothing to do but stare at the wife and try not to irritate her. Guess I should’ve bought a wood stove, but won’t admit it to her. I hate it when she’s right. I can’t believe I’m freezing to death in my own living room. December 20: Electricity’s back on, but had another 14 inches of the darn stuff last night. More shovelling! Took all day. The darn snowplough came by twice. Tried to find a neighbour kid to shovel, but they said they’re too busy playing hockey. I think they’re lying. Called the only hardware store around to see about buying a snow blower and they’re out. Might have another shipment in March. I think they’re lying. Bob says I have to shovel or the city will have it done and bill me. I think he’s lying. December 22: Bob was right about a white Christmas because 13 more inches of the white crap fell today, and it’s so cold, it probably won’t melt until August. Took me 45 minutes to get all dressed up to go out to shovel and then I had to pee. By the time I got undressed, peed and dressed again, I was too tired to shovel. Tried to hire Bob who has a plough on his truck for the rest of the winter, but he says he’s too busy. I think the jerk is lying. December 23: Only 2 inches of snow today, and it warmed up to 0. The wife wanted me to decorate the front of the house this morning. What is she, nuts?! Why didn’t she tell me to do that a month ago? She says she did but I think she’s lying. December 24: 6 inches last night. Snow packed so hard by snowplough, I broke the shovel. Thought I was having a heart attack. If I ever catch the son of a gun who drives that snow plough, I’ll hit him with my broken shovel. I know he hides around the corner and waits for me to finish shovelling and then he comes down the street at 100 miles an hour and throws snow all over where I’ve just been! Tonight the wife wanted me to sing Christmas carols with her and open our presents, but I was too busy watching for the snowplough. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Diary OF A SNOW SHOVELER Cont.. December 25: Merry &%$# Christmas! 20 more inches of the darned slop tonight - snowed in. The idea of shovelling makes my blood boil. I hate the snow! Then the snowplough driver came by asking for a donation and I lost it on him. The wife says I have a bad attitude. I think she’s an idiot. If I have to watch “It’s A Wonderful Life one more time, I’m going to scream! December 26: Still snowed in. Why did I ever move here? It was all HER idea. She’s really getting on my nerves. December 27: Temperature dropped to -30 and the pipes froze; plumber came after 14 hours of waiting for him, he only charged me $1,400 to replace all my pipes. December 28: Warmed up to above -20. Still snowed in. The wife is driving me crazy!!! December 29: 10 more inches. Bob says I have to shovel the roof or it could cave in. That’s the silliest thing I ever heard. How dumb does he think I am? December 30: Roof caved in. I beat up the snow plough driver, and now he is suing me for a million dollars. The wife went home to her mother. Nine more inches predicted. December 31: I set fire to what’s left of the house. No more shovelling. January 8: I feel so good. I just love those little white pills they keep giving me. Why am I tied to the bed?

YOUR PET AND WINTER As winter settles in, here are a few tips to remember to ensure a healthy season. As most pet lovers know, winter can be a challenge for our pets. This article will explore some common dangers to watch for, and what to do to avoid problems. This is actually a winter (and summer) potential problem. Cats and dogs are attracted to the sweet smell and taste of antifreeze, and will often sample some if left out in a container or spilled on the garage floor. Antifreeze is highly toxic; it is rapidly absorbed (initial signs appear approximately one hour post-ingestion), and there is a high mortality rate. Other sources of this deadly chemical are: heat exchange fluids (sometimes used in solar collectors), some brake and transmissions fluids, as well as diethylene glycol used in colour film processing. Acute cases (within 12 hours of ingestion) often present as if the animal was intoxicated with alcohol: stumbling, vomiting and depression are common signs. The kidneys are most severely affected, and even if the animal seems to improve initially with treatment, they may succumb shortly after to kidney failure. The kidneys shut down, and the animal is unable to produce urine. This type of kidney failure usually happens 12-24 hours after ingestion in cats, and 36-72 hours post ingestion in dogs. Success of treatment is dependent upon quick treatment. If you suspect that your animal has come into contact with antifreeze, contact your veterinarian immediately. A safe alternative to ethylene glycol antifreeze is available, it is called propylene glycol, and while it does cost a small amount more than ‘regular’ antifreeze, it is worth the peace of mind. Arthritis and Winter Cold, damp weather aggravates arthritis in dogs and cats. Arthritis can appear in young pets, but is most common in the middle age and geriatric pets. A fracture can also make the bone susceptible to arthritis after the injury is healed. Overweight pets suffer from arthritis more than their normal-weight counterparts. If your pet is having trouble getting up or laying down, navigating the stairs, or has started to snap or cry when picked up, a visit to the veterinarian is in order. Many new arthritis treatments are available, both natural and medicinal. NEVER medicate your dog with human prescription or overthe-counter medications without consulting your veterinarian first! One Tylenol™ tablet can be fatal to a cat. The Outdoor Pet If you pet is housed outside, make sure that adequate shelter is provided to shield it from wind, moisture, and cold. Take extra care to ensure that your pet is comfortable and can get into and out of their housing easily. Several pet and feed stores carry safe heated floor mats or non-electric warm bedding. Deeply bedded straw is another good insulator. Do not use a heat lamp or other type of home heater - this is dangerous, and is the cause of many fires. Did you know that the SPCA states that no animal should be outside without heated housing below -15°C? Bring your pets inside when www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Pet Pages

temperatures dip. Refusing to do so could get you a meeting with an SPCA representative and a fine! Pets need to have fresh water at all times Make sure the water is not frozen during this time of year. Contrary to what some people think, animals do not know how to break the ice. (OK, some may have learned this trick, but they are in the minority). Heated pet bowls are a solution for frigid temperatures. These bowls are very handy to have during the cold winter months, and are available in stainless steel or plastic. You can find them at most pet supply vendors and feed stores. Pets that live outdoors may need additional food (calories) to sustain body temperature as well. Please check with your veterinarian to decide if your pet needs additional nutritional intake. Staying Fit As always, exercise is important! If there is snow on the ground, check your pet’s paws for ice balls or injuries. Rinse feet off if your pet has walked where de-icers have been used. Some de-icers are toxic when ingested (when pet licks paws). If your pet is having difficulty exercising due to depth of snow, slick icy surfaces, or appears to be winded, shorten the usual exercise times and monitor for any unusual signs.

I am a Banana

Namaste! That’s hello in Hindi, and that’s what you would say if you went to India. So, Namaste! My name is Hanna Banana and all of my really old ancestors came from India. Well, originally we came from Malaysia around 4,000 years ago, and then from there we traveled to the Philippines and India, where in 327 B.C. Alexander the Great's army even wrote about us in their records. My daa-daa-jee (Great Great Grandfather) went to Africa with Arabian traders and then we were discovered in 1482 A.D. by Portuguese explorers who took us to the Americas and the place where the majority of us are now produced. My cousins did not come to North America until the latter part of the 19th century and were initially only enjoyed by people in the seacoast towns where the banana schooners docked; because we are very fragile and cannot be transported far. But, since the development of refrigeration and rapid transport in the 20th century, we began to go everywhere. We mostly like tropical and subtropical regions – we grow the best there! Costa Rica, Mexico, Ecuador and Brazil are our favourite. We are a super source of potassium, an essential mineral for maintaining normal blood pressure and heart function. Since we contain a whopping 467 mg of potassium and only 1 mg of sodium, we help to prevent high blood pressure and protect against atherosclerosis. In addition to these cardiovascular benefits, the potassium we have may also help to promote bone health. Potassium may counteract the increased urinary calcium loss caused by the high-salt diets typical of most people, thus helping to prevent bones from thinning out at a fast rate. We have been recognized for our antacid effects that protect against stomach ulcers and ulcer damage. We work our magic in two ways: first, we have substances that activate the cells that compose the stomach lining, so they produce a thicker protective mucus barrier against stomach acids. Second, we have protease inhibitors, which help eliminate bacteria in your stomach that have been pinpointed as a primary cause of stomach ulcers. We are a smart choice if you suffer from elimination problems. A bout of diarrhea can quickly deplete your body of important electrolytes. We will replenish your stores of potassium, one of the most important electrolytes, which helps regulate heart function as well as fluid balance. In addition, we contain pectin, a soluble fiber (called a hydrocolloid) that can help normalize movement through the digestive tract and ease constipation. We are an exceptionally rich source of fructooligosaccharide, a compound called a prebiotic because it nourishes probiotic (friendly) bacteria in the colon. These beneficial bacteria produce vitamins and digestive enzymes that improve our ability to absorb nutrients, plus compounds that protect us against unfriendly microorganisms. When fructooligosaccharides are fermented by these friendly bacteria, not only do numbers of probiotic bacteria increase, but also so does the body's ability to absorb calcium. In addition, gastrointestinal transit time is lessened, decreasing the risk of colon cancer. We are "pre-packaged" by nature, with a creamy inside and a pretty outside. You’re not going to believe this, but I have hundreds of edible cousins. We come in all sorts of colours and sizes. You may think we are just yellow, but nope! We can be red, pink, purple and black. And, there are a hundred different ways you can eat me; sliced in a peanut butter sandwich, in fruit salad, on your cereal or mixed in yogurt. We are also great in recipes, and to help you out with ideas, I have shared a few super yummy treats for you to try! Amba (good-bye) for now! Hanna Banana

You just make a simple vanilla pudding recipe, layer it with vanilla wafers and sliced bananas and you have a treat that is so good, everyone will want seconds.

slices and 1/3 of the remaining pudding. Repeat the layers twice. Beat 3 egg whites (at room temperature), at the high speed of an electric mixer, for 1 minute. Gradually add 1/4-cup sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time. Beat until stiff peaks form and the sugar dissolves (2-4 minutes). Spread the meringue over the pudding, sealing to the edge of the casserole. Bake at 350°F for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.

There is just something warm and homey about banana muffins. This is one of the best banana recipes and a great way us when we get over ripe.

Banana Muffins

1/2 Cup (or 1 stick) butter or margarine, softened 1 Cup sugar 2 large eggs 2 large ripe bananas, mashed 2 Cups flour (all-purpose) 1 tsp. salt 1 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. baking soda 1 Cup buttermilk 1/2 Cup chopped walnuts 1 tsp.vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 400°. Beat together butter and sugar at medium speed of mixer or by hand, until light and fluffy. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating well each time. Add bananas and beat until smooth. In a separate bowl, mix together flour, salt, baking powder and baking soda. Alternate stirring in part of the flour mixture and part of the buttermilk into the egg mixture until all is added and mixture is just moistened. Do not over mix. Batter will not look completely smooth. Stir in nuts and vanilla. Grease 12 standard size muffin tins or use paper cupcake cups. Spoon batter into muffin cups, filling 2/3 full. Bake 15-18 minutes until lightly golden. Cool muffin pan slightly before turning out the muffins. Cool muffins on a rack a bit more.

Mmmm… honey. What puts honey in a category of its own as a source of sweetness is that it’s a complex, naturally-produced food that can be consumed just as it is, with no processing required except perhaps for some coarse filtering. Like other natural foods, and in sharp contrast to refined white sugar, honey contains a countless array of nutrients and other compounds that endow it with unique flavours and both nutritional and medicinal value. Yum – enjoy!

HONEY HERB DIP OR DRESSING Use this for chips, shrimp, ham cubes, vegetables, olives or pineapple chunks. Use as a salad dressing for green and fruit salads. 1 pint sour cream 6 Tbsp. honey 2 Tbsp. orange juice, thawed, undiluted 2 Tbsp. Dijon mustard 2 tsp. cream-style horseradish 2 tsp. rosemary, crushed 1 tsp. chervil, crushed 1 tsp. basil, crushed 3/4 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. white pepper 1/4 tsp. garlic powder Combine all ingredients; mix well. Refrigerate, covered, several hours to blend flavours. Stir before using.

LIFE Lines

This monthly column by Jody Brown, is designed to help you make better connections and live happier lives. Sometimes we just need to ask the question. Joanne (Jody) Brown is an NLP Master Practitioner and advanced Master Hypnotherapist with a Diploma in corrections. You can learn more about NLP and hypnosis techniques on her website at www.authenticbeing.ca or contact her at Authentic Being Consulting #403-983-2230 in Strathmore.

I have always had a dream to buy up some land, build a dream house and pursue a life living in the country. Some of my relatives and friends think I’m crazy. Should I take the risk or should I just play it safe?! I’m torn because I feel I’m really letting people down. Signed, “When you become comfortable with uncertainty, infinite possibilities open up in your life. It means Playing it safe Dear Playing it Safe,

fear is no longer a dominant factor in what you do and no longer prevents you from taking action to initiate change.” Eckhart Tolle from his book, A New Earth: Awakening to your Life’s Purpose

If you believe that we only go around this worldly experience called life once, then you might want to make every day count and pursue the dreams, career and lifestyle that you feel most passionate about. I don’t think we’ll look back on our lives during our final death review and figure that we should have spent more time at a job we hated because we earned good money at it, or that we shouldn’t have taken that world trip full of memories and experiences because it just was too expensive and time-consuming. If you need further inspiration, why not interview a senior citizen? Ask them if they have any regrets or if they would have lived life differently. For a past university assignment, I interviewed a senior and was just amazed and inspired at the knowledge, passion and wisdom that she was able to share with me. It was truly moving! If ever I had any doubts about the ability to live life to the fullest, it was quashed after talking to this amazing 80 year old woman who had lived life through some incredible emotional peaks and valleys. Taking risks, learning to listen to her intuition or ‘inner voice’ and acting on her dreams and passions were truly inspiring to hear about. She taught me a lot that I’ll never forget. In everything you do, you will have people that are disappointed, judgemental, jealous or angered by your actions. You have to be true to yourself and follow through on those dreams and nagging gut feelings that you should be doing this, or pursuing that. You will know what those dreams are as they keep surfacing until perhaps you will thoughtfully listen and pay attention. It would be a shame to mute those voices until it’s too late to lead that fulfilling life that is calling out to you. Just ask yourself realistically what the worst thing is that could happen. Can you live with that? If you can, what’s stopping you from moving forward? It’s hard to know just when we’ve crossed the line from being passionate about a dream to being a bit unrealistic and foolhardy. If we were to check out Steve Jobs’ philosophy (co-founder of Apple Computers), he would give us the thumbs up and tell us to ‘Stay Hungry and Be Foolish’. Recently Steve Jobs passed away, and in reflecting on his life through the media, it was interesting to find an amazing speech to the 2005 graduating class of Stanford University students in which he told three stories. I would highly recommend that you check this out through a Google or YouTube query. His words are quite inspiring and show that even in our greatest moments of embarrassment and despair we can pull ourselves out to uncover our true desires and reach personal fulfillment. Good luck! PLAY A PART IN THE OLYMPIC GAMES! JOSHUA RIKER-FOX. HOMETOWN PENTATHLETE AND 2008 OLYMPIAN IS WORKING TOWARD A SECOND OLYMPIC GAMES QUALIFICATION FOR LONDON 2012.

WHO IS JOSHUA RIKER-FOX?

Born and raised in Delacour, Alberta, Josh began riding, running, swimming and competing in local events at a very young age. At 13, he competed in his first full Pentathlon, and has continued to work and develop into the National Team athlete he is today. Joshua competed in many International events in pursuit of the Olympic dream, a dream that became a reality in Beijing 2008. He has demonstrated an ability to compete with the best in the world, highlighted by a number of results: qualifying for three World Cup Finals (reserved for the top 36 athletes in the world) and finishing 8th at 2010 Medway World Cup, the highest Canadian male result ever! Joshua qualified for 3 Pan American Games (held every 4 years), earning the Bronze Medal in Rio 2007. Prior to the Pentathlon season, Joshua competes in the five individual sports both locally and nationally. This season he competed in a number of World Cups, World Cup Championships and NORCECA Championships where his team won Gold in the relay (a combined event with one male, one female athlete). This event will likely be added to the 2016 Olympic Games. His dedication to his athletic career is matched equally by commitment to academic development. Joshua has earned a dual degree in Kinesiology and Commerce at the University of Calgary and is presently working on his MBA. Joshua earned Academic All-Canadian honours. He has devoted his lifestyle and resources to training, and competing for Canada, as well as spending time volunteering as a coach for younger pentathletes.

ATHLETE FUNDING

Joshua is aspiring to earn a spot at his second Olympics, London 2012. Despite contributing to the medal count at the Pan Am Games, and competing in Beijing 2008, Josh receives NO funding from Sport Canada. In order to achieve his Olympic dream, he is creating a sponsor base that will allow him to take the necessary steps toward his goal. In the Canadian sport world, without the support of sponsors, one simply has little chance for success. Support from amazing sponsors, and events such as this fundraiser will make the dream possible.

Delacour and surrounding areas are proud to announce their assistance in the sponsorship of Joshua Riker-Fox to compete at the 2012 Olympics in London. For further information contact Cathy at 403-226-6064 or by email at bcsummer@efirehose.net Please consider becoming a sponsor and play your part in the 2012 Olympic Games. BODY PARTS & DISEASE YOUR LIVER AND ALCOHOL

Your liver is the largest organ inside your body. It is also one of the most important. The liver has many jobs, including changing food into energy and cleaning alcohol and poisons from the blood. There are many kinds of liver diseases. Viruses cause some of them, like hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C. Others can be the result of drugs, poisons or drinking too much alcohol. If the liver forms scar tissue because of an illness, it’s called cirrhosis. Like other parts of your body, cancer can affect the liver. The term “liver disease” applies to many diseases and disorders that cause the liver to function improperly or stop functioning. Abdominal pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or abnormal results of liver function tests suggests you have liver disease. Cirrhosis is scarring of the liver and poor liver function. It is the final phase of chronic liver disease. If the liver fails completely, then death within 3-4 days is inevitable unless a new liver is transplanted - there is no such thing as an artificial liver (yet!). If the body were a country, the liver would be the manufacturing industry, the food industry, the waste disposal industry, and the petro-chemical industry. In other words, it’s important! The liver doesn’t have any pain nerves in it, so liver disease normally does not cause pain. If you are regularly drinking more than 3-4 alcoholic drinks a day, then it is quite likely that you will have developed a fatty liver. If you are regularly drinking more than 5-6 alcoholic drinks a day, then you will almost certainly have a fatty liver, and may well develop more serious liver problems over time. Fatty liver is not in itself a massive problem; if you stop drinking or cut down to safe levels, then the fat will go away. The problem with a fatty liver is that over a long period of time the liver becomes scarred. When this is really bad, you have cirrhosis. Symptoms may develop gradually, or there may be no symptoms. When they do occur, they can include: abdominal indigestion or pain, conwww.thenewsyneighbour.com

fusion or problems thinking, impotence, loss of interest in sex, breast development (gynecomastia) in men, nausea and vomiting, nosebleeds or bleeding gums, pale or clay-coloured stools, small red spider-like blood vessels on the skin, swelling or fluid buildup of the legs (edema) and in the abdomen (ascites), vomiting blood or blood in stools, weakness, weight loss, yellow colour in the skin, mucus membranes, or eyes (jaundice). Alcohol is one of the most widely used drug substances in the world and alcohol use is not only an adult problem. Most high school seniors have had an alcoholic drink within the past month and about 1 in 5 teens are considered “problem drinkers.” This means they get drunk, have accidents related to alcohol use, get into trouble with the law, family members, friends, school, or dates due to alcohol. Alcohol gets into your bloodstream quickly; the amount and type of food in your stomach can change how quickly this occurs. For example, highcarbohydrate and high-fat foods can make your body absorb alcohol more slowly. Alcohol stays in your bloodstream until it is broken down by the liver. If you drink alcohol faster than the liver can break it down, this level will raise your blood alcohol level. The blood alcohol legal limit usually falls between 0.08 and 0.10. If you are between 0.05 -- reduced inhibitions, 0.10 -- slurred speech, 0.20 -euphoria and motor impairment, 0.30 – confusion, 0.40 – stupor, 0.50 – coma, 0.60 -- respiratory paralysis and death. Can anyone say, beer-bong! The health risks of alcohol are many including alcoholism or alcohol dependence, falls, drowning, motor vehicle accidents, head, neck, stomach, and breast cancers, risky sex behaviours, unplanned or unwanted pregnancy, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), suicide and homicide. Drinking during pregnancy can harm the developing baby with severe birth defects or cause fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). There is nothing wrong with having a few drinks – but your body can only break down roughly one drink per hour. Think to yourself before you take that next one, “what am I doing to my liver”?? Monthly Book Review by Derek Donais Join me each month as I review a great read. My passions are fantasy and science-fiction, but I do read other genres. Really, I do. I also lean toward local authors, when possible, as I think we have a wealth of artistic talent here in Alberta. I currently live in Strathmore with my wife, Connie, and my two children, Kieran and Maia-Lynn. I’ve been a teacher for most of the time we’ve lived in the province, which is over a decade now. My debut novel, MetalMagic: Talisman, was released in September, 2010, and I’m diligently working on the sequel—that is, when I’m not reading books or writing for my column. Yours in Truth, Derek Donais

The Walking Dead: Rise of the Governor Robert Kirkman and Jay Bonansinga Thomas Dunne Books (October 11, 2011) ISBN: 978-0312547738 —The blacktop ribbon winds through barren forest preserves, abandoned residential villages, and ransacked strip malls. As they move through increasingly populated areas, the side of the road holds horrors that no little girl should ever see.—

I’m a big fan of the television series, so I thought I’d check out a Walking Dead novel—it is Halloween season, after all. The first thing I’ll say is that this is not a book for young readers; I’d suggest you not buy it for your children, unless they’re of an appropriate age. Having said that, I enjoyed reading it for the most part. It does contain a good amount of ‘violence and coarse language’ as the broadcasters would say. Still, the language wasn’t so bad that it ruined the read and I expected the violence part, in keeping with the whole fighting-for-our-lives-against-the-dead theme. The story centers on a group of three adults and a child who are making their way through the zombie-infested wasteland that was Georgia. The de facto leader of the party is Philip Blake, a tall, muscular man whose no-nonsense approach to the apocalyptic events occurring around them gives the group a sense of purpose and direction, even if that purpose is merely survival and the direction is simply the city of Atlanta. Brian Blake, his brother, is by most measurements the polar opposite of Philip. He’s indecisive, more of a thinker, physically small and often ill. Although Brian is the older brother, he’s used to Philip taking charge and looking out for him. Nick Parsons, a friend of Philip and by association, of Brian, accompanies the brothers. Though slightly smaller than Philip, Nick is an athletic man and relishes his role as one of the group’s defenders. The fourth member is Penny, Philip’s seven-year-old daughter. It is her father’s self-sworn duty to see Penny delivered from the feral, once-people that lurk around every corner. While Philip and Nick see to the duties of protecting the group, Brian is often left to watch over his niece. It’s a responsibility he undertakes with enthusiasm, as she’s very dear to him as well. The small company is heading to Atlanta because of rumours that a secure refugee encampment is located there. Atlanta thus provides a beacon of hope and safety amid the ruins of civilization where none is to be found elsewhere. Everywhere they travel, signs of the calamity are present. Signals from radio and television stations change from chaotic, live broadcasts to pre-recorded messages and finally to static. Water and power utilities shut down as the people who monitored them abandon their work throughout the growing epidemic. Highways become obstacle courses of abandoned vehicles or burned-out wrecks. Neighbourhoods, towns and cities are empty of life. Only the dead remain and the four survivors must keep quiet and out of sight in their travels, lest they attract more of the ‘biters.’ As the group moves from a rural landscape to the outlying regions and suburbs of Atlanta, this plentiful evidence of civilization’s decay only increases. Much like the T.V. series, I found the character development to be a great strength of the book. I won’t give away the ending, but as the book progresses the behaviours and actions of the characters are realistic and believable. Well, as realistic and believable as can be expected in a story populated by hordes of the undead. Philip’s singleminded determination to keep Penny safe, Brian’s self-doubt and Nick’s loyalty to his long-time friend will all be challenged before the end. I found myself asking the following questions: If you’re forced to live only for survival, does that change what it means to be fully human? And if so, then what would remain to separate us from those we might classify as inhuman, like The Walking Dead? If these questions spark your curiosity, this book might be a fit for you. Page 38

Chinese Medicine - an Ally in the Treatment of the

Common Cold As we all know cold and flu season is upon us. Fall and winter tend to keep many otherwise healthy people indoors and less active lending a helping hand to the spread of colds and flu’s. Many still believe that Chinese Medicine is used as a last resort for chronic illnesses and pain; however its methods are very effective for acute conditions such as common colds and flu’s!

Winter Sports: How To Prevent Injuries Before Suiting Up; With Self-Massage The benefits to self-massage for athletes: 1. Improves athletic performance through elongating the muscles for more contraction and release when using the muscle. 2. Releases trigger points and acupressure points; this is where most of the lactic acid is stored. 3. Relieves muscle pain and soreness through the release of lactic acid that has built up while playing the sport and will aid in stretching performance. 4. Helps with all of the body systems, working at the cellular level to feed and detoxify the body. In turn, self-massage makes the body look, feel, and perform its best to give an athlete the advantage. 5. Strengthens your immune system, aiding in the prevention of colds and flus and making one stronger and healthier, thus assisting athletes to perform at their peak at all times. 6. Reduces stress, anxiety, and depression and helps your body release endorphins, dopamine, serotonin and adrenaline, giving you a shot of “endorphin cocktail” (the natural happy drug) that the body produces itself. 7. Reduces the stress hormone cortisol, which can make one look and feel that they can conquer the world, and accordingly help one perform at their best. Don’t forget to stretch! Stretching should be done slowly, with specific techniques, using controlled breaths and movement. The benefits of self-massage followed by stretching before and after any kind sport or activity: 1. Improves posture by allowing the muscles to stay in a relaxed state. Good posture can decrease discomfort and reduce aches and pains. 2. Improves circulation, and helps transport nourishment, while ridding muscle tissue of waste by-products. Improved circulation can shorten recovery time for any muscle injuries. 3. Increases flexibility and joint range of motion. Athletes can benefit greatly with improved endurance for the game. 4. Can reduce stress and, just like in self-massage, can positively affect your mood, decision making abilities, and the way your body feels. 5. Can enhanced coordination: Coordination is one of the most important benefits for which an athlete strives. When a full range-of-motion can be maintained through the joints, an athlete can thus better maintain balance and equilibrium. Coordination and balance help keep an athlete mobile and less prone to injury from unnecessary falls due to lack of balance! Faith Is In Your Hands will be at the Christmas Farmer’s Market November 26, 2011 from 10am-4pm at the Strathmore Civic Center. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Can a Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCMD) help further? The answer to this is most

definitely YES! A TCMD differentiates each patient’s condition and prepares an herbal formula according to the patient’s constitutional strengths and their complaints. The goal is to regain balance and support what the body is already doing. Preventative formulas may also be prescribed to build on patient’s weaknesses or lessen the total effects of a common cold. An acupuncture point prescription and/or cupping treatment may also be used as a means to a hurried recovery period. Book your appointment with Dr. Tonya Coutts as soon as you feel the beginnings of a cold and see the difference TCM makes!

In this month’s column, I’m going to switch it up and talk about something a little different - how moods and makeup reflect each other. What I mean is, how we portray ourselves is in direct correlation with our mood on that particular day. In the makeup and fashion world, I notice all types of women; some appear casual and polished with a brightly coloured scarf, while some may be dressed in dark colours and concealed in an oversized knit sweater. Thus, the same applies to makeup. As we all know, it takes actual time, precision, and effort. We have steps to follow; we utilize tools and pay close attention to detail. After all, it is our face and the focal point of the human body (contrary to what our male audience may think). When you start your day after getting dressed and move on to your hair and makeup, do you ever ponder what colour of eye shadow to wear? Do you stop and think, “Should I wear a lip-gloss or lipstick? And if so, what colour?” Or do you decide to use some basic eyeliner, mascara, and call it a day? My point is, whatever emotions you’re feeling will be reflected in your appearance. Personally, I know when I’m feeling a little down and need something to brighten me up, make me feel lively, and fun. I find myself wearing a bright eye shadow, liner, or lipstick - something different and fun to pull me out of that mood. I’ve had women explain whenever they are feeling less than pretty and want to feel more desirable and perhaps sexy, they apply a smoky eye effect with long, thick, lashes giving tons of drama and intensity. In fact, studies have shown that a woman who wears red lipstick or a dark smoky eye wants to appear seductive and draw attention. If I were to see a woman wearing bright colours on her eyes, I’d think she was cheerful and outgoing; or, with carefully winged out eyeliner, feeling creative or artistic and wanting to be noticed. A woman with a lightly done face but with a vibrant fuchsia coloured lip is seen as fun, upbeat and ready for anything - more approachable. Now, if you’ve read this entire column and actually thought about it, I guarantee the next time you go to do your makeup, whether for work, a party or a day out, actively assess your mood, and choose your ‘look’. Think about it, and have a wonderful day!

I wrote my Body Parts article this month on diseases of the liver, so I thought I would write my NEW Natural Magic column to help with aaddiction and addictive behaviours. It seems that bad behaviours are hardwired into our brains, while establishing good habits takes hard work. When you make the decision that it is your time to make a change, it is very important that you give your body and mind all the help you can. It does not matter so much whether your downfall happens to be alcohol, drugs, tobacco, or even food, if you have been overindulging for a long time your immune system is compromised, your nerves shot, and your body and spirit badly damaged. Herbs help support your quest for balance by helping to heal the whole mind/body system. There are remedies to help stop smoking, to reduce the urge to drink, and sedative herbs to help balance mood swings. It is also vital to do what you can to help repair the liver, which takes the brunt of the damage whenever we overload our bodies with toxins. The lobeline in lobelia, commonly known as Indian tobacco, acts much like nicotine. Although it is less potent, the herb can help fool the body into thinking it has nicotine in the system. It can be made into a tea, but smoking the lobelia in a cigarette seems to work best. It is mildly sedating and helps to ease the nerves as well as quell nicotine withdrawal. This could help to ease you off nicotine, or at least decrease the number of cigarettes, which are laced with tars and other chemicals, that you smoke. Contrary to what you may have read, lobelia does not have a strong “high”, but will gently calm stressed nerves and help you to relax. Smoke only certified organic or homegrown herbs, and don’t overdo it. Now, if you are a frequent drinker or recovering alcoholic, you should take milk thistle extract on a daily basis. The seeds are bitter, so it is best to take capsules or glycerine extracts and if you have chronic fatigue or stress traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners often make a strong tea of reishi as a remedy for these conditions and as a liver tonic. This medicinal mushroom boasts several healthful effects, including an ability to reduce allergies and lower blood pressure. Reishi inhibits some of the chemical mediators of inflammation, including histamine. Just use 1/3 ounce of chopped or powdered reishi mushrooms and 3 cups of water combine in a pot with a lid. Bring water and mushrooms to a boil in a covered pan, reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes. Drink in divided doses throughout the day. Refrigerate for up to three days. You can purchase these mushrooms at the Chinese market in Franklin Mall in Calgary (across the street from Marlborough Mall), and if you have never been there you are in for a big surprise! Aleesha and I love to go there; there are sooo many really cool and exotic things to look at. You look at all the herbs, mushrooms and piles of dried things you have no idea what they are or what on earth you would do with them. This is the place where you will find the dried Reishi mushrooms. So if you have been overindulging for a while try these natural herbal remedies to give your body and your liver some love. EYE COSMETIC SAFETY

(PART TWO will be in the December issue) Eye shadow and mascara may enhance your appearance, but eye cosmetics can easily harm your vision. Adopting these eye makeup safety tips will help keep your eyes pretty and healthy. Do you wish to have a more dramatic look with your eyes? Mascara, eye shadow, and eyeliner can certainly do the trick. However, if putting on eye cosmetics is part of your daily routine, you should know about some potential dangers to your eyes. In fact, being just as diligent about removing eye makeup at night is more important than applying them each morning! Eye cosmetics are generally safe materials but only as long as you use them properly! All kinds of gunk can grow in those pretty little cosmetic packages over time. Bacteria and fungi can multiply, and if you continue to decorate your eyes with this makeup, you’re transferring those germs directly to your eyes. Some tips for using Eye Cosmetics To keep your eyes looking pretty and healthy and if you use these cosmetic safety tips, it will help to minimize your eyes’ exposure to bacteria: • Don’t hold on to any old makeup — throw it away after a few months! • Don’t use mascara that’s dried out, and please‌ NEVER attempt to moisten it with your saliva or water! It has been recommended to replace your mascara every two to three months or sooner if it has dried up. Tip: Keep a permanent marker in your makeup drawer and mark the date you open a new tube of mascara, so you will not use it past its shelf-life! • You should always keep your eye cosmetics in a cool place (85° F or below). Tip: Do not keep your eye cosmetics in your car or in a steamy bathroom. • Do not “mix and matchâ€? cosmetics. You should use what is intended for your eyes, on your eyes only! Do not use the same pencil for both lips and eyes, as it may cause bacteria. • Avoid eyeliners that may contain dangerous levels of lead. Avoid permanent colouring and dyes for eyelashes, as they can cause irreversible eye damage if not used correctly. Check with a professional first! • Never ever share your cosmetics with a friend. Bacteria can be transferred and contaminate your eye cosmetics, and vice versa. Submitted by Shirra Turner The Newsy Neighbour

Money Tips:

Say ‘no thanks’ to extended warranties! Purchase a new electronic these days and you will probably be offered an extended warranty. Most of the time, you really don’t need to buy this. Manufacturers yield a generous profit margin for themselves on these warranties. In the end you’re probably better off to pay for the repairs. When it does break 3 -4 years later, are you even going to be able to find the receipt anyways?? 1. Get a credit card that does not have an annual fee. There are many available cards that don’t have fees. 2. Cut back on going to restaurants and eating out. This may seem obvious, but even your coffee every morning on the way to work will add up over the year. 3. Switch to fluorescent lights (CFLs). The bulb will cost more than a regular bulb, but it will save on your electric bill over the life of the bulb. 4. Using a water filter at home instead of buying bottled water can save quite a bit of money (and the environment!). 5. Install a programmable thermostat. The thermostat can be programmed to reduce heat or air conditioning when you’re away or asleep.

Trees have a yearly cycle. They lose water all winter long. Calgary is hard on our trees, being in the heart of Chinook country. As soon as the frost leaves the ground in the spring, you should start watering 1 -2 inches every 2 weeks. If you do not have a rain gauge, try using a measuring cup to find out how long it takes to water. Do not forget to measure the rain and then water or skip accordingly. Some people use a Frisbee to measure. In Calgary, you should water until the first week in October. Then give the trees a good “soaking” to get ready for winter; probably twice what you normally water. Then leave the trees alone. Let them get ready for winter. It is important not to water after mid October. It may cause damage to the trees. They need time to adjust to the climate changes and get ready for their dormancy. There is no sense to watering in the winter. The ground is frozen and any water will just stay on the surface and freeze. The roots will never get any of the water even with the Chinooks. It is better to wait for spring and all the frost is out of the ground. That way you will not “fool” your trees into thinking spring has come too early. It is best to water your trees with a heavy, long single soak. This way the grass will get its water and the rest of the water will go below the grass roots to the roots of the tree. The best time to water is early morning or late at night. If that is not possible it is still important to water especially if the temperature is in the high 20’s or 30’s.Even though Calgary’s climate is dry and we have a lot of clay in our soil, it is still possible to drown the trees. The most important part of tree care is watering. As with most plants watering too much or too little causes 80% of tree related problems. When planting new trees, let them sit for 48 hours after planting before watering. This will allow the tips of the fine root hairs to harden before being submerged in water. When you start to water, make sure to keep the tree well watered depending on the specific soil you have. Your trees need more water than the grass. Every couple of weeks when you are out working in your garden or just enjoying the patio area, let the hose trickle into the tree wells. If you water deeply and infrequently you will promote deep root growth. This makes for healthier, more drought-resistant trees. If possible, direct the water from your down spout to the trees. No sense in wasting water. During mid September to mid October you can harden off the more mature trees by watering them sparingly. Late October, give them a good soaking just before you are ready to shut off your outside taps. During the winter, you can keep throwing snow over the roots and around the base of the trees. New trees should not be pruned for a couple of years. Fertilizing is good for the first few years. Spikes are not recommended. They do not break down uniformly, and may burn the fine root hairs where they are inserted. Mulching is important. Put a layer of mulch around your new tree. Wood-chip bark is best. Mulch holds in moisture, slows weed growth, and keeps soil temperature even. It also helps to keep the grass from growing around the base of tree, adds organic matter to your soil, and helps stop surface roots from being exposed when first watered. Use about 4-5 inches of mulch.

Ready for a long life? With increasing life spans, many Canadians can look forward to spending 30 years or longer in retirement. A time horizon of that duration indicates a need to ensure that your retirement nest egg will be there for you in the long run. Here’s why you need to consider this: Canadians are living longer. According to Statistics Canada, a 65-year-old male has, on average, a life expectancy of 18 more years; a woman, 21 more years. For every senior who passes away prematurely, another will outlive the forecast. For a couple, there is every likelihood that at least one partner will beat the odds. Depending when you retire, your time horizon could be 20 to 30 years. To prepare for such a long retirement, some exposure to equities can be an effective way to add long-term growth potential to your portfolio. With a retirement horizon of 20 to 30 years, you have an opportunity to increase your own retirement nest egg or leave a greater legacy for your beneficiaries. Protection from inflation. Historically, equities have provided long-term returns that outpace inflation by the widest margin, compared with fixed-income and guaranteed investments. Even modest inflation can significantly erode your purchasing power. Inflation of just 1.9% per year, Canada’s average since 1995, will reduce the value of $1,000 to $826 in 10 years, to $681 in 20 years and to $562 in 30 years. For most of the past 15 years, inflation has been modest by historical standards. And while we all hope that this will continue, there are no guarantees. In planning for your future financial security, it may be prudent to factor in an average inflation rate closer to 3%. Inflation of 3.13%, Canada’s average since 1914, will reduce the purchasing power of $1,000 to $728 in 10 years, to $529 in 20 years, and to $385 in 30 years. Page 46

You can manage volatility. If you’re concerned about the volatility of equities (and most retirees are), remember that diversification is the key to managing the markets’ ups and downs. Equities are more volatile than fixed-income investments but, historically, they have produced the greatest returns over time. By establishing a mix of equities, bonds, and cash instruments, you can achieve your goals for growth without losing sleep at night. Your fixed-income assets will generate retirement income and enable you to ride out cyclical downswings, while your equities will prosper when the markets are buoyant. We recognize that many investors become more risk-averse with age. We can help you to allocate assets in your retirement portfolio appropriate to your needs and risk comfort zone. Money saving ideas and secrets is what everyone is looking for these days. To tell you the truth, it doesn’t matter if the economy is good or bad, people are always looking for better ideas and ways to save more of their money. The number one secret to saving money is, you have to have a good enough reason to overcome your short-term desires of immediate self-gratification. Many people want to save because they are concerned about retirement or building a nest egg for their family; these are great reasons. Whatever works for you and your future, make it a priority and go for it. Here are a few secrets that will help you. Many of the suggestions will not mean a decrease in the number of parties or great times you have, but it doesn’t have to mean an end to them either. Finding a happy balance is what you need. The first secret you need to know is the decision. If you don’t make up your mind to create a plan, follow it, and stick to the plan, then you are wasting all of our time. Be a grown-up and follow up and through on your decisions. Make up your mind. Most people don’t have control over the impulses enough to save without help. Don’t be afraid of this reality; embrace it, and allow a portion of your cheque to be taken out of the account and stored into a separate savings account. You can take whatever percentage of the cheque you would like to put towards this savings account, but make sure it is at least 10% of your earnings. Don’t waste money. Building a savings account is great, but the issue comes in when the money is there and you know it is there. You start to think of all the things you could do with the funds, but you have to be strong and remember your ultimate reasons for saving the money in the first place. This is for your retirement, family nest egg, investment goals and future opportunities. Stay focused and don’t crack. Destroy debt and increase contributions. The more debt you eliminate, the more money you can put into savings. This is a great realization that hopefully you have already come to. Please understand, your debt payments each month is money that could be going towards saving more and more money throughout the year. Every debt you eliminate, take at least half of that new found money and put it into savings. You could take all of those funds and put them towards another debt to be eliminated. This will reduce the amount of time it takes to pay off that debt and give you more savings in the long run. The choice is yours. Invest it slowly. Building up money in a savings account is safe, but the money isn’t growing. The idea behind capitalism is to put money to work. Therefore, you may want to consider investing a portion of your savings. Not the whole thing and definitely not into anything that would be considered dangerous. Focus on opportunities like bonds or mutual funds. This is how you go about building your savings. There is no magic bullet, but you have to get started and stick with it.

WINTER AND CANADA

Antarctica is the coldest place on earth (kind of a no-brainer here) with the coldest reported temperature being -89.4 C (or) -129 F. The coldest place in North America: Snag, the Yukon Territory of Canada with a recorded temperature of -81.4 F on February 3, 1947. The world’s largest snowflake was 38 cm wide and 20cm thick and was found at Fort Keogh, Montana on January 28, 1887. FACTS ABOUT CANADA - An unusual fact about Canada is its name origin; it comes from a St. Lawrence Iroquoian word, Kanata, which means village or settlement. - An interesting fact about Canada is that it’s the world’s second largest country area wise (including its waters), and fourth largest in land area. - It also has the longest coastline in the world, about 243,000 kms in length. - The country shares the world’s longest common border with the United States of America, which is also the only unprotected border in the world.

WINTER AND CANADA CONT... - Toronto is the largest city of Canada, with a population of more than 5 million people. Toronto dwellers hold more university degrees than any other big city in the world. - Despite being a really big country, it has the fourth lowest population density in the world, with only three people living per square kilometre! Almost half of the population in Canada were born in other countries. - Here’s a weird fact about Canada: it produces so much energy, that it provides it to the US too! - The Ice Hotel in Quebec, known as Hotel de Glace is created every year using 400 tons of ice and 12,000 tons of snow. It melts away every summer and is recreated every winter. - Canada has just one desert in British Columbia, towards the southernmost corner of the Okanagan Valley in Osoyoos. The desert is only 15 miles long, with over 100 rare plants, and over 300 rare animals. It is also the only desert in the world that has a long boardwalk for people to walk on! - Canadian winter temperatures fall below freezing point, with snow covering some parts of the country for nearly six months!
