Water, water everywhere… The truth of the matter is that there is water everywhere. Even on the moon, Mars and various ice balls wandering about our solar system. Some places have more than others but there is still water. The trick? How much is useable? The real bottom line of having useable water when and where required is economic, without getting into great huge debates on political will, conservation, climate change or any other casual light lunch discussion (quick test: the difference between casual and causal? This is really important; why? Hint: correlation). There is a cost to water use. There must be energy input(s) somewhere into the water use system. The more energy it takes to obtain useable water and dispose of it (waste water treatment), the higher the cost. At some point the cost exceeds the return and a society based decision has to be made. This has led to Energy Star ratings and water efficient appliances. Domestically, the clothes washer and dishwasher are the two largest appliance water users. While both are such a part of our lives that functioning without is almost inconceivable, we pay however, through energy, water and sewer bills to use these appliances. Dishwashers – new ones really are much more water efficient. By using various cycles (as suggested in your Use & Care Guide) and reduced amounts of water, (between 4 – 6 L per load), the efficiencies of an Energy Star rated dishwasher will pleasantly surprise you and your bank account. Tip: Pre-rinsing or hand Page 12

The Newsy Neighbour

In Home or In Shop Service

washing actually reduces your water & energy efficiency and your dishes may not be as clean. All is still not perfect in the new dishwasher world. If you live in a hard water area you may notice a film on your dishes. Solving this may take checking out different detergents and dishwasher cleaners. Tip: Briefly run the hot water tap in your kitchen sink prior to starting a load in the dishwasher. Many dishwashers do not temperature check or heat the water they take in and your first wash cycle could be almost all cold water. Washing machines – whether high efficiency top load or front load, they use much less water than their older counterparts. So much less water that they require an HE detergent built to hold more soil in less water with fewer suds. Their efficiency and wash method means that they are also easier on the downstream end – water treatment/septic systems – by putting less water, clothing fibres and detergent into the system. Higher spin speeds conserve more energy by reducing the load on your dryer. Tip: If you don’t use your cycle selection (listed in your Use & Care guide) according to your laundry loads, some efficiencies may be lost. What marketing frequently doesn’t mention is that these mandated efficiencies usually result in more time to complete a task. A little extra planning can help on this and you still see the savings. Your local independent retailer/service will be able to answer your questions on the real efficiencies of new appliances and which may be best suited for your needs. Voted Calgary’s Best Consignment Shop! CHESTERMERE STATION WAY • Unit 213, 175 Chestermere Station Way Phone: 403-235-0352 FACTS ABOUT MEN • Men are very confident people. My husband is so confident that when he watches sports on television, he thinks that if he concentrates, he can help his team. If the team is in trouble, he coaches the players from our living room, and if they’re really in trouble, I have to get off the phone in case they call him. • Men are sensitive in strange ways. If a man has built a fire and the last log does not burn, he will take it personally. • Men have an easier time buying bathing suits. Women have two types: depressing and more depressing. Men have two types: nerdy and not nerdy.

• When four or more men get together, they talk about sports. When four or more women get together, they talk about men. • Most women are introspective: “Am I in love? Am I emotionally and creatively fulfilled?” Most men are outrospective: “Did my team win? How’s my car?” • If a man says, “I’ll call you,” and he doesn’t, he didn’t forget. He didn’t lose your number. He didn’t die. He just didn’t want to call you. • Men are self-confident because they grow up identifying with super heroes. Women have bad self-images because they grow up identifying with Barbie.

• Most men hate to shop. That’s why the men’s department is usually on the first floor of a department store, two inches from the door.

• Male menopause is a lot more fun than female menopause. With female menopause, you gain weight and get hot flashes. With male menopause, you get to date young girls and drive motorcycles.

• If a man prepares dinner for you and the salad contains three or more types of lettuce, you should be worried about him.

• Men are less sentimental than women. No man has ever seen the movie “The Way We Were” twice, voluntarily.

Quarterback Questions!

The Calgary Stampeders are the team to beat in 2013! Before you call me a homer or an idiot, I do make this fearless prediction with a huge caveat and asterisk. The Stampeders will have the best regular season record and win the Western Division if quarterback Drew Tate stays healthy and starts at least 16 games. “I am tired about talking about injuries,” says Tate. “I am coming into camp in the best shape of my life and I am ready to compete for the number one job. I don’t think I’m injury prone. What happened last season was just bad luck.” While Tate may be taking nothing for granted heading into a brand new season, the starting job is his if he stays healthy. That is a big “if”! Tate has a perfect 6 – 0 record when he starts and finishes a game. 7 – 0 if you count the final game of last season when he shared the starting role with Kevin Glenn. The coaching staff loves his arm, his leadership abilities and his compete level, but with the Ottawa expansion draft looming after the 2013 CFL season, Tate is going to have to prove to everyone in the organization that he is not another Buck Pierce of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. As training camp opens this month at McMahon Stadium, one of the biggest story lines will be the battle for the number two spot. Veteran Glenn was a great story in 2012 as he basically saved the Stamps season. Unfortunately, a sub-par performance in the Grey Cup game had some people in the organization questioning whether Head Coach and GM John Hufnagel waited too long to pull out the hook in favour of rookie Bo Levi Mitchell. The young gun slinger from Texas has a better arm than Tate and with a little more experience is considered as the quarterback of the future.

Thomas got a taste of the CFL last season as he was brought to Calgary on a practice roster agreement and he will be given every opportunity to compete for the number three spot this spring. This still doesn’t solve the issue you have with Glenn. Kevin is a team player and a consummate professional and while he still believes he can be a starter in the CFL, the feeling is he wouldn’t be excited with a reduced role. Will the Stamps be able to keep Tate and Glenn happy and not hamper the development of Mitchell? This is almost impossible, so don’t be surprised if Glenn starts the season in Calgary but doesn’t finish it here. The injury to Tate wasn’t the only issue for the 2012 Calgary Stampeders; injuries became the story of the season as the Stamps dressed over 70 players in the regular season. If this trend continues for 2013 the biggest off season loss for the organization will be the retirement of Pat Clayton who was the Director of Medical Services. Some veteran players have moved on like Romby Byrant, Marc Calixte, Arjei Franklin, Anwar Stewart, Obby Khan, Tad Kornegay and Brian Bulcke. The core remains young, solid and focused. Former U of C star and Super Bowl Champion Dan Federkeil was talked out of retirement and acquired from Toronto. Can he stay healthy or will he be another Jesse Lumsden? Free agent CFL veteran Terrance Jeffers-Harris will add to a very competitive receiving group, while free agent linebacker Yannick Carter will replace special team’s leader Calixte. There will be battles in training camp as the organization has loaded up with American defensive backs, linebackers and defensive linemen. However, the foundation is set for another very competitive season.

Here is the dilemma: if Tate stays healthy and is the number one quarterback, can the organization really afford to stall the development of Mitchell and bump him back to the number three spot? In my opinion, the answer is no. If Mitchell becomes number two, do the Stampeders really want a 34 year old Kevin Glenn in the number three hole? That is an expensive insurance policy for a position that is considered a development spot! Canadian quarterback and last year’s number three Brad Sinopoli has been asked to convert to receiver, so this opens the door for University of Oregon star Darron Thomas. Page 14

What Are These For? A man got a phone call from his wife at work one day and she asked him to stop at the store and pick up some groceries. Reminding her that this was his golf league night, he said he would be happy to go to the store AFTER playing his round of golf. After playing golf, he stopped at the store and picked up 2 bags full of groceries. He then proceeded to walk out of the grocery store to his Cadillac. Upon reaching his Cadillac, he found it difficult to reach into his pocket to pull his keys out to open his trunk because his arms were full with two bags of groceries. He saw a beautiful women walking nearby and he asked her, “Could you please do me a favour?” “Sure,” she replied. He went on to say, “I can’t reach into my pocket and get my Cadillac keys out to open my trunk and put my groceries away. Do you think you could reach into my pocket and pull my Cadillac keys out?” “No problem,” she replied. When she pulled the keys out, two golf tees also were pulled out as well and fell to the ground. She bent over and picked them up. Looking at the golf tees in the palm of her hand, somewhat quizzically she asked the man, “Gee, what are these for?” He replied, “Oh, those are to keep my balls in the air while I’m driving.” To which she commented, “Boy, those Cadillac people think of everything.”

15 Things You Should Never Say to Your Wife or Girlfriend 1. “Your mom looks hot in a bathing suit.” Few men have ventured in this uncharted territory and returned to tell about it. Don’t ever tell her someone else looks ‘hot’… especially her mom. 2. “Can you pay for this? I forgot my wallet…” Don’t be a cheapskate! Women like men who are confident and financially stable. Asking a woman to foot the bill is shameful and something a real man never does. 3. “Yes, that does make you look fat.” Even if she does look fat, you’re better off lying or pleading the 5th. 4. “You’re acting like your mother.” Talk about hitting 2 birds with one stone… Not only is this a slam on your woman, but it’s also taking a shot at her mother. This is territory you don’t want to be in. 5. “My ex always/never/used to…” Don’t talk about the ex. Nobody cares, especially your wife or girlfriend. 6. “Do you love/like me?” Statements like this are loaded with insecurity and are a HUGE turn off for women. 7. “Honey, What do you want to do/eat?” Don’t ever ask a woman what she wants. This can be the most frustrating factor in relationships. Asking that deadly question of “what do you want to do tonight?” or “where do you want to eat?” leads to indecision and frustration. Just take control, be the man and make the plan. 8. “Is that what you’re going to wear?!” If you’ve got issues with what she’s wearing, don’t insult her by bringing her taste or fashion sense into question. Simply tell her things that you do like. 9. “Pull my finger…” Be a man, not a pig. Don’t make lewd or rude comments, not to mention belching or flatulence around your sweetheart. Even after years of dating or marriage, this stuff can be a major turn off. Page 16 Page 16

Asphalt”

10. “Maybe you should go on a diet…” First off… if you’re packing some extra cargo around yourself, you’re in no place to tell your woman that they need to cut back or lose weight. Keep making comments like these and you’re in the fast lane to the doghouse. 11. “She’s hot!” (When you see an attractive woman walk past) If you really need an explanation for this… you’ve got bigger problems. 12. “It must be that time of the month, eh?” Let’s think this one through… if it really is “that time of the month”, the last thing you want to do is throw gasoline on the fire. 13. “This is the best vacuum you’re ever gonna have baby!” This is never a good thing to say. 14. “What did you do?” Not the best thing to say… especially when your wife just told you she’s pregnant. (Hint: You may have had something to do with it. If not, then you may have bigger problems.) 15. “I see you’re drinking 1%. Is that ’cause you think you’re fat? ‘Cause you’re not. You could be drinking whole if you wanted to.” There’s a lot of ways to compliment someone, but this is not one of them.

JUNE 16th IS FATHER’S DAY Fathers are very special people in our lives and being a father is a big job. They have so many roles to play in a child’s life. A father is someone who has to believe and delight in his children and be proud of everything they do. A father must teach by example and be a good role model for his children, as they will make decisions based on how their father would have handled it. Kids need their dad to give them positive encouragement and a good dad is kind, patient, insightful, heroic, calm, affectionate, courageous, inspiring, supportive, dependable, devoted, fun, practical, a best friend, always accepting, always generous and proud. Whew, in all A Mountain of a Man! Yes, being a good dad is a very big job! There are many things a good father must do but the most important job is to just love his children and everything else will fall into place.

1 Broiler chicken cut in 8 pieces 2 cups low fat buttermilk 2 tablespoons kosher salt 2 tablespoons paprika 2 teaspoons garlic powder 1 teaspoon cayenne Flour for dredging Vegetable shorting – for frying. Place chicken in a plastic container and cover with buttermilk. Refrigerator for 12 – 24 hours. Melt shortening – drain chicken – combine paprika, garlic powder, and cayenne. Liberally season chicken then dredge in flour and shake off excess. Cook until golden brown. Drain by placing on paper towel. Enjoy! And, of course, Dad’s favourite:

BEER CAN CHICKEN

2 tablespoons paprika 4 pound chicken 2 tablespoons salt Vegetable Oil 2 tablespoons onion powder 1 – 12 ounce can beer 1 tablespoon cayenne pepper 2 teaspoons thyme 2 teaspoons oregano 2 teaspoons black pepper 2 teaspoons garlic powder Mix all the ingredients together. Rub the chicken and its cavity with vegetable oil and season with the rub mixture, including the cavity. Pour out ¼ of the beer and sit the chicken on top of the beer can. Place the chicken in the centre of the hot grill and cover. Cook for 1 – ½ hours or until it reaches 165 degrees. Once cooked loosely cover with foil and let rest for 10 minutes. You can buy the beer can chicken holders at most stores – the chicken does tend to tip over without one.

LUSCIOUS JOYS

Crock Pot Sloppy Joes

Camping Crock Pot Recipes I look forward to our camping issue every year because I am always excited to share my newest and best camping food recipes, just in time for all my camping friends out there to experiment with all summer long! Over the past year, in preparation for this special issue, I have been trying and testing a lot of different crock-pot recipes; they are quick to throw together in the morning and you don’t have to give them a second thought all day long. You can make them ahead and freeze them, then throw them into your cooler or camper to take along on the weekend. Walla! You’re at least one meal ahead of the game.

Sloppy Joes are the ultimate camping meal. 3 pounds ground beef, browned and drained 1 onion, finely chopped 1 green pepper, chopped 28 ounce can tomato sauce ¾ cup catsup 3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce 1 teaspoon chili powder ½ teaspoon pepper ½ teaspoon garlic powder 8 sandwich buns, split Combine all ingredients except sandwich buns in a greased 5-6 quart slow cooker. Cover and cook on low for 4-5 hours. Serve in sandwich buns; top with shredded cheddar cheese if desired.

Crock Pot Brats with Sauerkraut

I changed my mind; brats are the ultimate camping meal! 8 uncooked bratwurst links 1 (14 ounce) can sauerkraut, rinsed and drained 2 medium apples, peeled and finely chopped 3 bacon strips, cooked and crumbled

I made this one just last night and the chicken is fall off the bone delicious. YUM!

Crock Pot Adobe Chicken with Bok Choy

(I did not have Bok Choy so I used Kale and it was delicious) 2 onions, sliced 4 cloves garlic, smashed 2/3 cup apple cider vinegar 1/3 cup soy sauce (I used white wine vinegar) 1 tbsp brown sugar 1 bay leaf ½ tbsp black pepper 2 tsp paprika 1 head Bok Choy, chopped 2 green onions Throw everything into your slow cooker. Start on high for the first ½ hour and switch to low for 6 hours. Test with a thermometer – chicken should be 165 degrees.

Crock Pot Macaroni and Cheese

1/2 pound uncooked macaroni 4 cups of milk 1 egg 4 cups shredded cheese 1/2 tsp kosher salt 1/2 tsp pepper 1 tsp dried mustard Spray crock pot well with cooking spray. In a mixing bowl, whip egg and milk together. Stir in spices. Add cheese (cheddar or a mixture of different cheeses) and noodles, and stir well to combine. Pour the mixture into the crockpot. It will be very liquidly. Cover and cook on low for 2-5 hours, or on high for 1-3. The cooking time will vary depending on what size crockpot you are using, and how quickly it heats and cooks. I was quite surprised at how quickly the pasta got fork-tender. Mac & Cheese is a staple when it comes to camping, as far as I’m concerned.

Crock Pot Chili Dip

A must-have for any camping trip. You can make it as hot as you want by using a medium or hot picante instead of the mild. 1 large jar (16 oz.) picante sauce, mild 2 cans refried beans 8 ounces sour cream ½ teaspoon chili powder 1 lb. ground beef 1 onion, chopped Salt and pepper to taste 8 oz. cheddar cheese, shredded Jalapenos or mild chili, chopped, to taste Cook ground beef with onion; drain. Mix everything together in crockpot and cook for 5-6 hours on low. Page 24

The Newsy Neighbour

¼ cup packed brown sugar ¼ cup finely chopped onion 1 teaspoon ground mustard 8 brat buns, split Place the bratwurst in a greased 5-6 quart slow cooker. In a large bowl combine the sauerkraut, apples, bacon, brown sugar, onion and mustard; spoon over bratwurst. Cover and cook on low for 6-7 hours or until sausage is no longer pink. Place brats in buns; using a slotted spoon, top with sauerkraut mixture.

Roadside Southern Pork Crock Pot

1 (5-7 pound) fresh pork shoulder 1 cup catsup 3/4 cup molasses 1/2 cup apple-cider vinegar 3/4 cup Worcestershire sauce 1 1/2 tsp onion powder 1 1/2 teaspoons garlic powder 1 tsp cayenne pepper 1 tsp chili powder 1 tsp ground mustard 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper Place pork shoulder into the crock-pot. Sprinkle salt and pepper over the pork. In a medium sized bowl, combine the catsup, molasses, applecider vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix well. Add the onion powder, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, chili powder, ground mustard and black pepper. Pour sauce mixture over pork, cover and cook on low 8 to 10 hours. Remove pork from pot. Remove meat from bones using two forks to pull the meat away from the bone. Return the shredded meat to the crock pot. Cook on low for an additional 30 minutes or until juice is cooked down. There you go – 6 fabulous new crockpot recipes for your camping trips this summer!

(ii) A clever advertisement to entice a fisherman to spend his life’s savings on a new rod and reel. (iii) The punch administered by said fisherman’s wife after he spends their life savings [see also, right hook, left hook]. 3) Line: Something you give your colleagues when they ask on Monday how your fishing went over the weekend. 4) Lure: An object that is semi-enticing to fish, but will drive an angler into such frenzy that he will charge his credit card to the limit before exiting the tackle shop. 5) Reel: A weighty object that causes a rod to sink quickly when dropped overboard. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

6) Rod: An attractively painted length of fibreglass that keeps an angler from ever getting too close to a fish. 7) School: A grouping in which fish are taught to avoid your $30.00 lures and hold out for bread instead. 8) Tackle: What your last catch did to you as you reeled him in, but just before he wrestled free and jumped back overboard. 9) Tackle Box: A box shaped amazingly like your comprehensive first aid kit. Only a tackle box contains many sharp objects, so that when you reach in the wrong box blindly to get an elastoplasts [band aid], you soon find that you need more than one. 10) Test: (i) The amount of strength a fishing line affords an angler when fighting fish in a specific weight range. (ii) A measure of your creativity in blaming ‘that flippin’ line’ for once again losing the fish.

What bow can’t be tied? A rainbow! What did the tie say to the hat? ‘You go on ahead and I’ll hang around!’ What happens when you throw a jacket and trousers into a river? You get a wet suit. What kind of button won’t unbutton? A bellybutton! What kind of coat can be put on only when wet? A coat of paint. Why doesn’t the Gingerbread Man wear shorts? Because he has crummy legs.

When we talk about Relaxation Massage or Reflexology Treatments, we automatically think that we are talking about women; but men need just as much care as women do. Men work hard at whatever they do, from working the corporate life at a desk, in the oil fields or just being a Dad. They all need that extra care looking after themselves too! There are more and more men having massage, reflexology and natural holistic treatments these days, but there are still a lot of men that are not! So go out today and ask your man if you can help him in the wellbeing of his health. Summer Camp Dear Mom, Our scout master told us all write to our parents in case you saw the flood on TV and worried. We are OK. Only 1 of our tents and 2 sleeping bags got washed away. Luckily, none of us drowned because we were all up on the mountain looking for Chad when it happened. Oh yes, please call Chad’s mother and tell her he is OK. He can’t write because of the cast. I got to ride in one of the search & rescue jeeps. It was neat. We never would have found him in the dark if it hadn’t been for the lightning. Scoutmaster Webb got mad at Chad for going on a hike alone without telling anyone. Chad said he did tell him, but it was during the fire so he probably didn’t hear him. Did you know that if you put gas on a fire, the gas can will blow up? The wet wood still didn’t burn, but one of our tents did. Also, some of our clothes. John is going to look weird until his hair grows back. We will be home on Saturday if Scoutmaster Webb gets the car fixed. It wasn’t his fault about the wreck. The brakes worked OK when we left. Scoutmaster Webb said that a car that old you have to expect something to break down; that’s probably why he can’t get insurance on it. We think it’s a neat car. He doesn’t care if we get it dirty, and if it’s hot out, sometimes he lets us ride on the tailgate. It gets pretty hot with 10 people in a car. He let us take turns riding in the trailer until the highway www.thenewsyneighbour.com

patrolman stopped and talked to us. Scoutmaster Webb is a neat guy. Don’t worry, he is a good driver. In fact, he is teaching Terry how to drive. But he only lets him drive on the mountain roads where there isn’t any traffic. All we ever see up there are logging trucks. This morning all of the guys were diving off the rocks and swimming out in the lake. Scoutmaster Webb wouldn’t let me because I can’t swim and Chad was afraid he would sink because of his cast, so he let us take the canoe across the lake. It was great. You can still see some of the trees under the water from the flood. Scoutmaster Webb isn’t crabby like some scoutmasters. He didn’t even get mad about the life jackets. He has to spend a lot of time working on the car so we are trying not to cause him any trouble. Guess what? We’ve all passed our first aid merit badges. When Dave dove in the lake and cut his arm, we got to see how a tourniquet works. Also, Wade and I threw up. Scoutmaster Webb said it probably was just food poisoning from the leftover chicken. He said they got sick that way with the food they ate in prison. I’m so glad he got out and became our scoutmaster. He said he sure figured out how to get things done better while he was doing his time. I have to go now. We are going into town to mail our letters and buy bullets. Don’t worry about anything. We are fine. Love, Cole The Newsy Neighbour

For children there is absolutely nothing more exciting than the thought of summer holidays. I remember counting down the sleeps until the final day of freedom; no more long boring classes, getting up early every morning, homework, exams and bus rides. Yahoo to sleeping in, eating when you want to, staying up late, hanging out and my all-time favourite, camping! We are very lucky to be living in a province that has plenty of summer camps for your children and there is some government support for families who would like to send their children to camp but cannot afford it.

Camp Warwa is one of these camps and offers subsidy programs which you can apply for online. It is located on a 23-acre paradise located on Lac Ste. Anne 80 km west of Edmonton. Their flexible program is designed to accommodate the skill level and interest of each camper. Each child is treated as unique, important and capable, and provided with every opportunity to succeed. Every camper will have to opportunity to try new things and challenge themselves, experience nature and make new friends. Campers are divided into age specific groups: Pioneers, Explorers, Voyageurs, Adventurers, Anake, and Counsellors-in-Training. Every camper gets to choose what programs they participate in, and every age group have special programs that only they get to experience. Each cabin group also gets to go on an out trip appropriate to their age and skill level. Finally, in addition to the activities they get to experience with their own age group, campers will also enjoy programs with the whole camp, including exciting morning wake-ups, wide games and songs and stories around the campfire each night. You may find them at www.campwarwa.org

Pioneer Ranch is located on Crimson Lake, 16 km NW of Rocky

Mountain House. Guests stay in cozy cabins along the shores of the lake. The central Ranch House has a large dining room, kitchen, and meeting areas. Pioneer Camps are all about leadership development. Their staff are highly committed, enthusiastic, Christian volunteers who are university age students or adults. Many staff return year after year because of their love of youth, camping and wilderness adventure. Because we are volunteer based, we are able to boast an unrivalled staff-to-camper ratio of one staff member for every four campers – or better! For more information go to www.pioneercamps.ab.ca

“My daughter came home with a great attitude. The positive person that returned from camp is the kid I‛d like to keep!!!

“Camp was a great experience. There were so many activities and I made a lot of friends. I love the counsellors since they are all so friendly and generous with their time. I hope I can be a counsellor one day too!”

Camp Chestermere is located on Lake Chestermere 10 minutes East of Calgary.

Their Overnight Camps have been the 'signature' program here at Camp Chestermere for 60 years! Campers experience a more in-depth exposure to their chosen activities and have the opportunity to grow in their independence and maturity by staying overnight under the watchful eye of our trained staff. Camp Chestermere's Day Camps provide a unique experience for children. As campers, they participate in a variety of camp activities during the week while divided into three unique age groups: 5-7, 8-9 and 10-13. This allows for a more enjoyable experience for all who attend. www.campchestermere.com

Why a child should go to camp!

Children learn creativity in a camp setting. Business leaders today complain about the lack of creativity in their employees. Camp encourages kids to look at the world using their imagination. Out of their everyday environment, children develop creative thinking skills, and mom isn't there to help with every little incident.

There are hundreds of summer camps listed in Alberta at:

Bar Harbour Camp a secluded

100-acre site on the southeast shores of Buffalo Lake, next to the summer village of White Sands located in the County of Stettler. They offer youth camping programs for ages 6 through 17. On arrival at camp, campers are placed in a cabin group and stay in a cabin with 5-9 other campers depending on the age group. Campers participate in many different activities while at camp, depending on the age group. Waterfront, swimming, canoeing, sports, crafts, games, talent shows, dances, campfire, archery, and out trips are just some of the things we do at camp. Contact information at www.barharbourcamp.com

There are many day camps your children may enjoy if they are not ready for the adventure of an overnight camp. You will also find this information available on these same sights. * Almost a quarter of respondents thought giving a cat a purely vegetarian diet is nutritious, when in fact it can be harmful, according a study titled “Nutrient Requirements of Dogs and Cats, from The National Academies Press. Cats can survive on a vegetarian diet, but they aren’t able to process carbohydrates the way humans do, and vegetarian diets can fail to provide cats with enough amino acids to keep them healthy, according to veterinarian Marla McGeorge, a cat specialist at Best Friends Veterinary Medical Center in Portland, Ore. Morris the Cat and 9Lives want pet parents to know that armed with the right nutritional information, they can give their cats the food they need to live a long and healthy life. Here are some tips for selecting healthy food options for cats: 1. Choose quality food and read labels. Your cat’s food should provide a complete and balanced supply of nutrients. Remember, different cats have different needs. If your cat is older, select a formula for mature cats. If he needs help with his skin and coat, select a food developed with ingredients to help these problem areas. The Advanced Nutrient System in 9Lives cat food provides an option for every cat’s daily nutritional needs. 2. Create a comfort zone. Promote healthy eating by giving your cat a quiet, clean place to eat. If you also have a dog, make sure your cat isn’t eating Fido’s food. Dog food is developed for dogs’ nutritional needs, and your cat has his own unique requirements for protein, taurine, niacin, vitamin A and fatty acids. 3. Go easy on the treats. Though nutritious cat treats are OK from time to time, use them sparingly as a reward for good behavior or a training tool. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Having a hard time getting active and staying motivated? Try being active in a group! There are so many benefits, such as support, accountability, and structure all of which are important for sticking to your goals. Going with a friend (or meeting several friends) helps you (and them) stay committed and motivated. Setting a time, catching a class, joining a walking group or trying a new sport, will help cement your commitment. You are less likely to skip out if you know that people are expecting and

counting on you. Joining an active group even if you don’t know anyone can also have the same benefits. Meeting new people, trying new and fun ways to be active is always a recipe for success. So, we know that being active in a group can be the key to becoming and staying motivated, but what sort of group should you join? Hockey, soccer, walking groups, group fitness classes, yoga classes, paddle board yoga, salsa lessons, Taekwondo, aqua fit, cycling clubs, or start your own group; the sky is the limit! Your local community probably has something for everyone; check your local paper, community website, recreational centers, or make an appointment with a friend to go for a walk. It’s important to pick an activity that you enjoy. The more you like doing an activity, the more motivated you will be to go and the less likely you will be to make excuses not to go. Want to try something completely new, something out of your comfort zone, something you’re not sure you will like it? Commit to going at least 5 times; in that amount of time you will know if that activity is a good fit for you! Health & Beauty Section What Should We Eat?

Get That Beach-Ready Body...

There is so much information about what we should eat and what we shouldn’t eat, and controversy over both leaves you a little confused and aggravated. I have been reading labels for years because of all my food allergies and I’m glad to announce most companies have taken monosodium glutamate (MSG) out of their foods. But, the question still remains: what is good and bad when it comes to the food we eat? This is what the experts have to say.

Just In Time For Summer!

The Endocrinologist Won’t Eat: Canned Tomatoes Fredrick Vom Saal is an endocrinologist at the University of Missouri who studies bisphenol-A. The problem: The resin linings of tin cans contain bisphenol-A, a synthetic estrogen that has been linked to ailments ranging from reproductive problems to heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. Unfortunately, acidity (a prominent characteristic of tomatoes) causes BPA to leach into your food. Studies show that the BPA in most people’s body exceeds the amount that suppresses sperm production or causes chromosomal damage to the eggs of animals. “You can get 50 mcg of BPA per liter out of a tomato can, and that’s a level that is going to impact people, particularly the young,” says vom Saal. “I won’t go near canned tomatoes.” The solution: Choose tomatoes in glass bottles (which do not need resin linings). If your recipe allows, substitute bottled pasta sauce for canned tomatoes. Look for pasta sauces with low sodium and few added ingredients, or you may have to adjust the recipe.

The Farmer Won’t Eat: Corn-Fed Beef Joel Salatin is co-owner of Polyface Farms and author of half a dozen books on sustainable farming. The problem: Cattle evolved to eat grass, not grains. But farmers today feed their animals corn and soybeans, which fatten up the animals faster for slaughter. But more money for cattle farmers (and lower prices at the grocery store) means a lot less nutrition for us. A recent comprehensive study conducted by the USDA and researchers from Clemson University found that compared with corn-fed beef, grass-fed beef is higher in beta-carotene, vitamin E, omega-3s, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), calcium, magnesium, and potassium; lower in inflammatory omega-6s; and lower in saturated fats that have been linked to heart disease. “We need to respect the fact that cows are herbivores, and that does not mean feeding them corn and chicken manure,” says Salatin. The solution: Buy grass-fed beef, which can be found at specialty grocers and farmers’ markets. The best idea is to buy from your local farmer. The Toxicologist Won’t Eat: Microwave Popcorn Olga Naidenko, is a senior scientist for the Environmental Working Group. The problem: Chemicals, including perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), in the lining of the bag, are part of a class of compounds that may be linked to infertility in humans, according to a recent study from UCLA. In animal testing, the chemicals cause liver, testicular, and pancreatic cancer. Studies show that microwaving causes the chemicals to vaporize--and migrate into your popcorn. “They stay in your body for years and accumulate there,” says Naidenko, which is why researchers worry that levels in humans could approach the amounts causing Page 34

cancers in laboratory animals. DuPont and other manufacturers have promised to phase out PFOA by 2015 under a voluntary EPA plan, but millions of bags of popcorn will be sold between now and then. The solution: Pop natural kernels the old-fashioned way: in a skillet. For flavourings, you can add real butter or dried seasonings, such as dillweed, vegetable flakes, or soup mix. The Farm Director Won’t Eat: Nonorganic Potatoes Jeffrey Moyer is the chair of the National Organic Standards Board. The problem: Root vegetables absorb herbicides, pesticides, and fungicides that wind up in soil. In the case of potatoes--the na-

There is also concern about the high level of antibiotics and pesticides used to treat these fish. When you eat farmed salmon, you get dosed with the same drugs and chemicals. The solution: Switch to wild-caught Alaska salmon. If the package says fresh Atlantic, it’s farmed. There are no commercial fisheries left for wild Atlantic salmon. Canned salmon, almost exclusively from wild catch, can be found for as little as $3 a can.

After they’re dug up, the potatoes are treated yet again to prevent them from sprouting. “Try this experiment: Buy a conventional potato in a store, and try to get it to sprout. It won’t,” says Moyer, who is also farm director of the Rodale Institute (also owned by Rodale Inc., the publisher of Prevention). “I’ve talked with potato growers who say point-blank they would never eat the potatoes they sell. They have separate plots where they grow potatoes for themselves without all the chemicals.” The solution: Buy organic potatoes. Washing isn’t good enough if you’re trying to remove chemicals that have been absorbed into the flesh. Organic potatoes are only $1 to $2 a pound, slightly more expensive than conventional spuds. The Fisheries Expert Won’t Eat: Farmed Salmon Dr. David Carpenter, director of the Institute for Health and the Environment at the University at Albany, published a major study in the journal Science on contamination in fish. The problem: Nature didn’t intend for salmon to be crammed into pens and fed soy, poultry litter, and hydrolyzed chicken feathers. As a result, farmed salmon is lower in vitamin D and higher in contaminants, including carcinogens, PCBs, brominated flame retardants, and pesticides such as dioxin and DDT. According to Carpenter, the most contaminated fish come from Northern Europe, which can be found on American menus. “You could eat one of these salmon dinwww.thenewsyneighbour.com

The Cancer Researcher Won’t Drink: Milk Produced With Artificial Hormones Rick North is project director of the Campaign for Safe Food at the Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility. The problem: Milk producers treat their dairy cattle with recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH or rBST, as it is also known) to boost milk production. But rBGH also increases udder infections and even pus in the milk. It also leads to higher levels of a hormone called insulin-like growth factor in milk. In people, high levels of IGF-1 may contribute to breast, prostate, and colon cancers. “When the government approved rBGH, it was thought that IGF-1 from milk would be broken down in the human digestive tract,” says North. As it turns out, the casein in milk protects most of it, according to several independent studies. “There’s not 100 percent proof that this is increasing cancer in humans,” admits North. “However, it’s banned in most industrialized countries.” The solution: Check labels for rBGH-free, rBST-free, produced without artificial hormones, or organic milk. These phrases indicate rBGH-free products. Try Wal-Mart’s Great Value label, which does not use rBGH. The Organic-Foods Expert Won’t Eat: Conventional Apples Mark Kastel, a former executive for agribusiness, is codirector of the Cornucopia Institute, a farm-policy research group that supports organic foods. The problem: If fall fruits held a “most doused in pesticides contest,” apples would win. Why? They are individually grafted (descended from a single tree) so that each variety maintains its distinctive flavour. As such, apples don’t develop resistance to pests and are sprayed frequently. The industry maintains that these residues are not harmful. But Kastel counters that it’s just common sense to minimize exposure by avoiding the most doused produce, like apples. “Farm workers have higher rates of many cancers,” he says. And increasing numbers of studies are starting to link a higher body burden of pesticides (from all sources) with Parkinson’s disease. The solution: Buy organic apples. Reference: www.foxnews.com/ foods you should never eat For me the answer is and has always been to eat clean living foods. Clean eating means choosing fruits, vegetables, and meats that are raised, grown, and sold with minimal processing. Be healthy and enjoy the sunshine of life. Kathryn Hartwell

BODY PARTS As many of you know, I juice pretty much every morning. Carrots, celery, beets, peppers, red cabbage and grapefruit, and then I stir in a teaspoon of turmeric. Turmeric, you may ask? It’s something I originally saw on, the Dr. OZ show. After I saw mention of it, I did my own research and that was when I made the decision to add it to my juice in the morning. If you’ve ever eaten curry, you’ve eaten turmeric; the spice that gives curry its colour and distinctive taste. Turmeric comes from the rhizomes, or underground roots, of the Curcuma longa plant. The active ingredient in turmeric, called curcumin, has a long history of use in both traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic medicine. Turmeric is widely regarded by many cultures to be one of the most beneficial health substances known to mankind. According to Ayurveda, a traditional Indian medicine system that translates to ’The Science of Life’, turmeric imparts three of the six essential tastes to food: bitter, astringent and pungent (salty, sour and sweet are the other three). Peer-reviewed research has also proven the many benefits of turmeric; with several studies showing that curcumin — the active compound in turmeric — can actually reduce tumour size by 81%. Not surprisingly, turmeric uses go beyond the fighting of cancer. In India, where turmeric is widely used in addition to being held to such high regard, also has the lowest rate of Alzheimer’s in the world. This is no coincidence, as turmeric has been hailed by health experts for its powerful anti-Alzheimer’s (in addition to over 500+ other conditions) properties. Considered to be one of earth’s firstknown spices, the relative of ginger can be used in a number of ways to enhance your health through tasty food, soothing homemade skin lotion, and even when consumed alone.

A popular one of the many turmeric uses, the spice can be used as an ingredient in skin-enhancing cream. Try this traditional skincare recipe from India that has been used to combat skin conditions like acne and promote overall healthy skin. Mix 1/2 tsp turmeric powder (or 1/2 tsp liquid turmeric) into 3 tablespoons of organic plain yogurt. Afterwards, rub the mixture all over your face and neck. Leave it on for a few minutes, and then wash it off — you’ll be met with a natural glow as a result. Amazingly, turmeric is the featured spice at Indian weddings thanks to its known beauty benefits. I love curry, but I had no idea how healthy it was for me. Curry dishes do not only use turmeric, but a variety of other spices rich in nutrients as well. Curries usually have a meat base, but you can also use vegetables for it. Curries are fairly simple to make, as you essentially just mix spices and nutritious ingredients such as garlic, turmeric, ginger, cayenne pepper, onion, and cilantro. All of these are seriously powerful health boosters, and they are quite delicious. The best part? It’s really simple. Just mix and wait till you get a pasty texture. In addition: curcumin has long been connected to liver health. Numerous studies have linked it to effectively combating liver cancer and improving liver fibroids. What’s more, turmeric can uniquely assist the enzymes that are responsible for flushing out known dietary carcinogens. The result is enhanced protection against liver damage, and even regeneration of affected liver cells. Turmeric is also notably responsible for improving the health of the gallbladder as well. Melanoma, breast cancer, lung cancer, neck cancer, and of course liver cancer, may all be helped with turmeric. It can also, reportedly, make cells more vulnerable to cancer treatments. It’s an anti-inflammatory as well. This property means curcumin can help with things like arthritis, eczema, allergies, digestive problems and skin issues. It’s an antiviral, antifungal, and antibacterial agent. Reaping the benefits of turmeric and curcumin is simple: start eating it! Curries are a great way to get plenty of this super-root, and curries are very versatile. But, if Caribbean or Middle-Eastern cuisine isn’t your thing, just add it to soups and sprinkle it on vegetables. Pass the Turmeric! Try a Turmeric Morning Shake

A great time to intake your nutrients for the day is shortly after you awaken each day and turmeric is no exception. If you start your day off with a protein shake or green super food drink, this presents an amazing opportunity to add in some turmeric. If available, liquid turmeric is particularly effective in mixing with these shakes. If you prefer a non-liquid meal for breakfast, try sprinkling or dropping 1/4 tsp on your morning eggs or vegetarian option. This can be done multiple times throughout the day, such as in your workout shake or even in your favourite juice or water drinks.

Grapes: They can actually grow in Alberta! This week I experienced my first real grape harvest. Sure, I’d had managed to grow a few small clusters before – just enough to get a taste. But this year was the first year that I’ve been able to grow enough grapes to eat all I wanted fresh, plus harvest enough to make up some delicious grape jelly for the winter. I have four different varieties growing in my yard here in central Alberta, but the two varieties that are mature enough to produce are my Valiant Grapes, and my Marechael Foch Grapes. The valiant grapes are larger than the marechael grapes (though still smaller than what you might find in the grocery store) and are packed with flavour! In fact, they are very similar in flavour to the Concord grapes that you buy in the store. I have them growing on the south side of my garage on a trellis with my kiwis. (Yes, you heard right… with MY KIWIS.) I’ve found this location to work great for three reasons: 1. They get piles of sun. 2. They are protected from the wind (and they grab a bit of extra warmth from the garage.) 3. They get lots of water since all the rain that falls on the garage roof drips down right in front of them. The kids love to eat them fresh – though the seed to flesh ratio is pretty high! I enjoy them too, but my wife finds them a bit too tangy for her liking. www.thenewsyneighbour.com www.thenewsyneighbour.com

However, I’m sure that she’ll enjoy the grape jelly that I made yesterday. And that was a pretty simple process, too. So, it’s really true: grape growing is not reserved for California or Italy. Not even British Colombia. Grapes can actually grow in Alberta! Try it – I think you’ll like it! http://www.albertahomegardening.com/grapes-they-can-actually-grow-inalberta/#more-480

www.gardenscents.ca Create an upscale deck for less with easy upgrade ideas Does spending time on your deck “do it for you” - or does your deck simply “do the job?” Your outdoor space should be an area that you truly enjoy and are proud to show off to company. You may not need a complete deck remodel to achieve that level of perfection. With some smart deck upgrades you can create an upscale look for less.

If you like the look of wood, but want something more durable without the maintenance hassles, consider railings made from composite materials. With a look that emulates real painted wood, composite railing options won’t split, warp, rot or suffer from insect infestation. While you’re researching railings, it’s wise to also look at balusters - the railing spindles - and decide what styles you like best. You can mix and match with your railing materials to get a one-of-a-kind look. Metal and aluminum balusters are popular and come in many shapes, styles, colors and sizes. If you really want a distinctive look for your outdoor space, consider glass balusters. This is a particularly great option for decks with grand views, since the glass allows you to enjoy the landscape without the visual obstruction of traditional railing infills. Finalize your deck upgrades with some decorative elements. Deck railing accessories can add the perfect stylish touch to any outdoor space. Decorative post caps, for example, install quickly and easily, changing the look of any railing to suit your design tastes. Ornamental post caps come in glass, metal, wood and planter styles. Some even feature solar lighting that provide a beautiful ambiance after the sun sets. Some simple changes to your current deck structure can take it from drab to fab without the cost of a complete remodel. Explore your options today to create a deck you’ll enjoy for many seasons to come.

Start by looking at the railing. More than just a safety feature, the railing is one of the most prominent design elements of any deck, and changing it is a cost-effective way to make an eye-catching statement. Remember, your railing doesn’t have to match your current deck material. If you have a wood deck that doesn’t necessarily mean you need wood railings. Think outside the box and blend different colors and materials - such as aluminum, glass and composite - for a complementary look that increases the aesthetic appeal of the entire house. Aluminum railings are increasingly popular because they Page 38

Is Your Home in Need of a Home Design Stimulus Plan?

1. Provide immediate relief to family and living rooms with the removal of excess furniture.

Does lifeless and cluttered design leave your home in need of a makeover?

Provide relief to living and family rooms that have been over-taxed by excess furniture and accessories. Space is the basis for contemporary design and this look can be achieved by trimming down. Stimulate and breathe new life into rooms by cutting back on anything that has become a liability instead of an asset. Remove that extra wing back chair, the torn ottoman, those pillows that swallow up the sofa, and maybe even that old carpet so that you can actually see some floor.

Lifestyle and design expert Susie Coelho is out to change all of that with a sweeping Home Design Stimulus Plan that offers immediate and effective relief for homeowners to boost their surroundings, both inside and out, without busting their budgets. “Homeowners have been clamoring for widespread reform both inside and outside of the home,” says Coelho, who has provided guidance and support to homeowners for years with her best-selling books and HGTV makeover shows Surprise Gardener and Outer Spaces. “This plan will refresh any home design.” The five key components to Coelho’s Home Design Stimulus Plan are as follows: Page 40

2. Cut back on spending with the addition of only inexpensive or handmade decorative pieces. Fool guests by creating pieces of art for little or no money. Look for branches that can be put in a vase, a painting from a garage sale or flea market, a beautiful fabric piece, or even a great piece of wallpaper that can be framed. Find large pieces that make big statements. Light the art from the bottom with a small spotlight that

4. Give outdoor areas some incentives by taking the best of interior design outside. Bring change to your home by styling the outdoor spaces using simple indoor techniques. Add an outdoor rug to soften the patio floor; bring in a side table as a focal point or even an outdoor leather ottoman. Elevate the planter to the status it merits by placing it on a table instead of the ground. Add some decorative

Bring natural light into the home simply and affordable, and watch spirits increase as the energy bills decrease. Windows are a piece of art and can be used to showcase an outdoor tree or plant and create that seamless look between the indoors and the outdoors - but they must be clean. According to a recent survey, almost half of homeowners (48 percent) would rather clean the toilet or shower than their outdoor windows. Do You Know How You Rate? By Jason Eldridge

Since the downturn of the economy three years ago, financial institutions and various credit adjudicators have tightened the reins on their lending policies, and in particular, pay much greater attention to an individual’s past credit experience than ever before. Nowhere has this been more evident than in the mortgage industry. With foreclosures at historic levels, most lenders, insurers and their investors have reduced their product offerings, while at the same time, they have placed considerably more emphasis on a client’s credit (beacon) score when making their final decision. With that being said, there are a number of things you should know, not only when it comes to you qualifying for any type of credit request, but also in maintaining a good credit rating in general. Due to the fraudulent activity that is occurring in the world today, it is prudent that you check your credit report on an annual basis to ensure that all account information that is contained in the report is accurate. There Page 42

are two main credit report providers in Canada; Equifax and Transunion. Each of these providers can be accessed online at www.econsumer.equifax.ca and www.transunion.ca. When applying for credit, it is important that you don’t apply to several different banks or institutions within a short time of each other. Each time you do so, it is referred to as a “hit”, and this may result in your score dropping enough to prevent you from qualifying for that particular credit product. In the case of purchasing a home or refinancing your existing property, it is beneficial to use the services of a mortgage broker as we typically access your credit report once, and supply it to the various financial institutions for review. If you access your own credit report by contacting either Equifax or Transunion directly, this does not represent a “hit” on your file and therefore does not impact your score. In order to get your score as high as possible, I would suggest the following: it is best to make at least the minimum payment required for that particular credit card or line of credit each month. If possible, keep your balance(s) at or below 75% of your credit limit(s). In the

Home & Real Estate

www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Your HOME & Real Estate

TO CLEAN & PROTECT

event that you are either late with a payment or your account has gone to collection, it is vital that you bring the account up to date as soon as possible. You would be amazed how much your score will drop if you are so much as 30 days late on an account regardless of how much or how little that minimum payment required is. The good, the bad and the ugly stay on your credit report for a minimum of six years. In situations where there has either been serious delinquency or a bankruptcy in the past, it can be very difficult to re-establish one’s credit rating. One of the easiest ways to do so, however, is to get a cash secured credit card. It is recommended that you get a limit of at least $1500, which means you need to pledge at least that much as security. If you hold the card for a year and continue to make the minimum payment each month, you will find your credit score will go up significantly. This same approach may be used in situations where a client doesn’t have any credit whatsoever. Individuals with no credit history are often viewed in the same light as those clients with bruised or poor credit ratings because there is no previous credit to base their decision upon.

Dear Lifelines, I seem to worry all the time. What do I need to do? Signed Worrywart

Dear Worrywart, Worrying is a very normal part of life. However, if it begins to affect various aspects of your life in negative ways and begins to control your behaviour and impact those around you in a chronic way, you might want to look into addressing your concerns with a professional. In coping with just typical anxiety and worry, there are many things that you can do to help ease your discomfort. It’s a good idea to initially assess your life and see if there are specific areas of your life that are leading to the worrying. If there are serious conditions that are impacting your family such as mental or physical illness, disabilities, grief and loss, marital challenges, family complications or financial difficulties, there might be local groups that you can access. This way you might be able to discuss your worries with others who have similar circumstances and in the process or talking about your concerns this might help to reduce or eliminate some of the anxiety. It’s important to remember that you are not alone in your worry. These groups provide great sources of support and might even lead to strategies to help deal with the complexities of your life that might be more common that you realize. If you have no specific challenges that are leading to the worry and it’s more general, start assessing what triggers your stress. What is it that leads you down www.thenewsyneighbour.com

the path of worry? Is it a general feeling of being overwhelmed? Is it based on relationship issues at home or at work? Is this leading to sleep loss that in turn affects your performance the next day? It will help you to address your emotions if you know what is triggering you and making you feel this discomfort. This awareness is at least a start to help manage your stress and worry. Another coping strategy is to reduce or eliminate the clutter in your life. Try and get rid of things that you no longer need and clear out items that have become a source of obligation or frustration to you. By reducing your belongings, you can scale down on the time spent on cleaning and organizing and focus on the things in life that are more important to you. In having this time to pursue or focus on the things you love, this might be another way to build up more joy and reduce the stress. Hopefully this gives you a starting point and next month we can share more ideas on how to create a new direction in your life in the management of stress and anxiety. Get Creative, and Celebrate Our Earth! By Wanda Reinholdt

Since its international beginning in 1990, there has been a yearly celebration that encourages communities and citizens to protect the environment and make choices that do not pollute but improve the state of our earth. This celebration is called “Earth Day” and it is observed every April 22nd around the world. Events that take place during Earth Week are coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network. This celebration of the earth came about after John McConnell at the UNESCO Conference in San Francisco in 1969 declared March 21st the first day of spring. Nature’s yearly blooming each March and the recognition of it was later sanctioned by the United Nations along with Earth Day. A Canadian initiative in 2012 to celebrate Earth Day was “Take It Up For Earth”. It is outlined on Canada’s website www.earthday.ca. The program encouraged people to join others across the nation to do one or more of the following 4 things: Eat and prepare plant-based foods, drink tap water and be water wise, detox your personal routine, activate outdoor unplugged activities. Upon doing this, people had to report what had been accomplished. The purpose was to promote making better decisions about food, clothing and household necessities, thereby saving thousands of litres of water and oil, and meaningfully reducing personal and collective impact on the environment. According to the tracking of this initiative, 97132 days of energy were saved from the participation in this program. It was very successful. Another very notable initiative was an artistic one, carried out in 2011. The program was called the Upcycling Challenge. Upcycling is the art of making something beautiful out of something that would normally be recycled or thrown out. For the celebration of the Earth in 2011, individuals were asked to create projects that show safely the importance of re-use and waste reduction. These projects were filmed or photographed. Submissions were judged on written quality, clear instructions and well composed photographed or videos. The Page 48

The Newsy Neighbour

So why not join in the celebrating of Earth? It’s very easy to do. Here are some ideas: Get creative and take a fun Upcycle Art workshop with Hope Bridges. Shop smart by purchasing what you need rather than what you want. Save energy through replacing light bulbs, putting aerators on faucets, and weather-stripping on windows. Use alternative transportation. Choose local food. Wash clothes in cold water and hang to dry. Set thermostats lower, get programmable thermostats and install ceiling fans. Vacation, travel and work close to home. Take short showers instead of baths and don’t run water while brushing teeth. Use natural non-toxic cleaners like vinegar, baking soda and water. Instead of discarding, choose to reuse, recycle and compost. To celebrate the Earth and have an Upcycling experience, contact Hope Bridges at 403 983 3640.

Team Storytelling Game Get the creative juices flowing among your fellow road trippers by composing a group story. One person in the car starts by creating the first line of the story. You can start with a simple “Once upon a time, there lived a princess” or come up with something more unconventional like, “Joey the frog always had blue spots.” Next, each person in the car adds a line, and the story builds and builds. Depending on your group’s story telling stamina, you could go on for a few minutes or a few hours. To make the game more challenging and fun, make a rule that all of the lines rhyme or, instead of going in a circle, call on people to come up with a line. After you’ve reached your destination, your kids could write and illustrate the story as a token of their road trip adventure.

An Amazing Sentence in English “I do not know where family doctors acquired illegibly perplexing handwriting; nevertheless, extraordinary pharmaceutical intellectuality counterbalancing indecipherability transcendentalizes intercommunication’s incomprehensibleness.” The person who made this sentence must be a vocabulary GENIUS because the first word is one letter long, the second word is two letters, the third is three letters long... the eighth word is eight letters and so on. The twentieth word is twenty letters long!

There are no limits to what you can accomplish when you are supposed to be doing something else. An old man came up to me at the cash machine and asked me to help him check his balance... so I pushed him over. I could be wrong, but then I’d be you! Periods are ridiculous. I shouldn’t be punished for not being pregnant!

MY FAVOURITE – FABULOUS – FANTASTIC AND FUN STUFF

I love having a therapeutic massage. It calms your mind, increased awareness, gives you better focus and concentration and increased alertness. They just make you feel better inside. Unfortunately, the only time I treat myself to one is when I am on vacation, and I never seem to get around to it when I am at home working, which is the time a good therapeutic massage is important. There are lots of reasons for you to have a massage at least once or twice a month and most health plans cover them now, which is an added bonus. Some of the most beneficial reasons are it: Improves circulation. An improvement in both blood and lymph circulation helps your body gain strength and maximizes your energy level. Especially during the winter months when circulation and metabolisms may be slower, massage can help in removing toxins in the blood and encourages fresh energy to circulate easily. Efficient circulation also helps in muscle recovery, growth, and promotes the natural healing process. Enhances skin tone and skin health. When using high-quality oils and creams, massage therapists can significantly improve the tone and health of your skin after just a few massage sessions. Skin cells are revitalized, moisturized, and replenished naturally. Choose Vitamin E and natural grape seed oil bases for maximum benefits. Enhances a calm mind. Encouraging a calm mind creates an avenue for creativity; it is during these times that our minds are most conducive to creative thinking, developing plans, organizing thoughts, and reducing stressful thoughts. Massage can encourage this state of mind by relaxing the entire body. Reduces anxiety. As a natural deep relaxant, a successful massage can significantly reduce anxiety. Usually, anxiety is stored in some key areas of the body; the lower back, shoulders, abdomen, and neck. By relieving these areas of tension, the mind can ‘let go’ of anxiety and experience a light, almost freeing sensation. Promotes mental alertness. Although a massage can bring you into a state of deep relaxation, this is also a state of heightened mental alertness. Your mind is relaxed and calm, but acutely aware and in this state, capable of solving even the toughest problems! WHY MASSAGE WORKS Acupressure points are located around your body and all you need to do is press on those points with your fingers to deal with health/ beauty related problems. It is said that in Ancient China, acupressure points were like prescriptions to treat patients. They had herbal medicines but this was a much easier way. Nowadays, many therapists use acupressure and some therapists also teach acupressure to pregnant ladies for a healthy child. An acupressure massage in general focuses on applying pressure on different key pressure points on the skin. In acupressure, these points on the body are massaged or pressed with the fingers in order to help stimulate the body’s capacity to heal itself naturally.

YOUR OWN DIY FACIAL MASSAGE A facial massage is an essential element of a beauty regime. It improves blood circulation in the face, helps getting rid of dead skin, tones up the facial muscles and when done regularly, slows down ageing of the skin. There are many do-it-yourself facial massage techniques that are available. However, a facial massage at home differs from a facial massage by a professional beauty specialist. In an acupressure facial massage, there are many points on the face that have to be worked upon to give that extra glow to the skin. The main facial pressure points are situated in the inner edge of the eye orbits, the inner ends of the eyebrows, at the temples, next to the nostrils and lastly, just under your nose. An acupressure facial involves pressing these and other acupressure points on the face. These zones therefore benefit from more blood, oxygen and energy flow. Facial acupressure points are massaged firmly and are worked upon using slight pressure. It not only stimulates the collagen of the face, but also the lymph nodes of the face. Therefore, an acupressure face massage is becoming more and more popular the world over although its origins can be traced back to China. There are many techniques for your own DIY facial massages; here is an example of just one technique. Massage these points for 30 – 60 seconds three times per week using your middle finger. The Third Eye. This is the point between your eyebrows and above your nose. It stimulates the pituitary gland, which is the master endocrine gland, to enhance the condition of the skin throughout the body. Four Whites. This point is located 1 inch below the pupil and on the cheek. You should feel the cheekbone. This point cures acne and blemishes. Facial Beauty. This point is under your pupil and below your cheekbone. It relieves acne, facial blemishes, poor complexion, sagging cheeks and improves facial circulation. Heavenly Appearance This point is located just under the ear lobe and behind the jaw .where you feel an indentation. It balances the thyroid gland to increase lustre of the skin and helps to relieve hives. The major plus point of a facial massage is that it is a lot cheaper than a surgical cosmetic surgery. It can be done at home, every day and when done properly it can be very effective. It gives that added sparkle to the skin; it reduces the appearance of wrinkles and double chin. It also counteracts effectively against puffiness. Give facial massage a try you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Check with your local spa or individual massage therapist to define what you need, and what your body will most benefit from. During different times, or stages of your life, you may need a specific treatment or an individual recommendation. Try various approaches and see what works best for you. Namaste! Bathing Suit Shopping I have just been through the annual pilgrimage of torture and humiliation known as buying a bathing suit. Back in the 1940’s and 1950’s, the bathing suit for a woman with a mature figure was designed for a woman with a mature figure - boned, trussed and reinforced, not so much sewn as engineered. They were built to hold back and uplift and they did a good job. Today’s stretch fabrics are designed for the prepubescent girl with a figure carved from a potato chip. The mature woman has a choice - she can either front up at the maternity department and try on a floral suit with a skirt, coming away looking like a hippopotamus who escaped from Disney’s Fantasia - or she can wander around every run-ofthe-mill department store trying to make a sensible choice from what amounts to a designer range of fluorescent rubber bands. What choice did I have? I wandered around, made my sensible choice and entered the chamber of horrors known as the fitting room. The first thing I noticed was the extraordinary tensile strength of the stretch material. The Lycra used in bathing costumes was developed, I believe, by NASA to launch small rockets from a slingshot, which give the added bonus that if you manage to actually lever yourself into one, you are protected from shark attacks. The reason for this is that any shark taking a swipe at your passing midriff would immediately suffer whiplash. I fought my way into the bathing suit, but as I twanged the shoulder strap in place, I gasped in horror - my bosom had disappeared! Eventually, I found one bosom cowering under my left armpit. It took a while to find the other.

Strathmore $314,900

Strathmore $314,000 So many renovations. Double detached carport. Landscaped and fenced. Media Room. Underground Sprinklers

At last I located it flattened beside my seventh rib. The problem is that modern bathing suits have no bra cups. The mature woman is meant to wear her bosom spread across her chest like a speed bump. I realigned my speed bump and lurched toward the mirror to take a full view assessment. The bathing suit fit all right, but unfortunately, it only fit those bits of me willing to stay inside it. The rest of me oozed out rebelliously from top, bottom, and sides. I looked like a lump of play dough wearing undersized cling wrap. As I tried to work out where all those extra bits had come from, the prepubescent sales girl popped her head through the curtains, “Oh, there you are!” she said, admiring the bathing suit. I replied that I wasn’t so sure and asked what else she had to show me. I tried on a cream crinkled one that made me look like a lump of masking tape, and a floral two piece which gave the appearance of an oversized napkin in a serviette ring. I struggled into a pair of leopard skin bathers with ragged frill and came out looking like Tarzan’s Jane pregnant with triplets and having a rough day. I tried on a black number with a midriff and looked like a jellyfish in mourning. I tried on a bright pink pair with such a high cut leg I thought I would have to wax my eyebrows to wear them. Finally, I found a suit that fit... a two piece affair with shorts style bottom and a loose blouse-type top. It was cheap, comfortable, and bulge friendly, so I bought it. When I got home, I read the label which said, “Material may become transparent in water.” I’m determined to wear it anyway... I’ll just have to learn to do the breaststroke in the sand. ~ Author Unknown
