smarter than you think. ~ Christopher Robin (Winnie the pooh) Taking your bra off at the end of a super long day is quite possibly one of the best feelings ever. When a friend does something wrong, don’t forget all the things they did right. Being nice to someone you dislike doesn’t mean you are fake. It means you are mature enough to tolerate your dislike towards them. One day, someone will walk into your life and make you see why it never worked out with anyone else. Everybody is a genius. But, if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid. – Elbert Einstein All inclusive IN HOME hearing care including: - Complete in home Hearing Assessments, weekend appointments available. - Hearing Aid fittings and ongoing in home after care and service of hearing aids.

For your headache A man wakes up his wife during the night with a glass of water in one hand and two aspirins in the other. She asks, “What’s this for?” “This is for your headache,” he says. She replies, “But I don’t have a headache.” He smiles and says, “Gotcha!”
A WOMAN
A woman, while at the funeral of her own mother, met a man who she did not know. She thought he was ‘amazing.’ She believed him to be her dream partner so much, that she fell in love with him right there, but never asked for his number and could not find him. A few days later she killed her sister. Why? Answer: She was hoping the guy would appear at the funeral again. If you answered this correctly, you think like a psychopath. This was a test by a famous American psychologist used to test if one has the same mentality as a killer. Many arrested serial killers took part in the test and answered the question correctly. If you didn’t answer the question correctly, good for you. Otherwise...

The Newsy Neighbour
From the Publishers:
Ok, I have never written an editor’s note before. Kathryn (Mom) always writes it, but this month she is away so I am taking a stab at it. This is our 4th annual wedding issue and by far our biggest wedding issue! If you are planning a wedding this year, make sure to take advantage of all the great information and advertisers we have in here. Everything you need to make your dream wedding a reality is in this issue. We also have sample wedding vows and some common wedding questions and answers. This issue also celebrates our 4th Birthday. That’s right! The Newsy Neighbour turns 4 years old in April! We can’t believe how fast time has gone by. To help celebrate our birthday we are giving away 4 $50 gift certificates. All you need to do is email us an answer to the question… “What do you think of The Newsy Neighbour?” I know we always say this, but it’s because of YOU that we have made it this far. This is our 54th issue! We are a little over half way to our 100th issue. We are going to have to do something VERY special for that one. Any ideas?? We have many new advertisers in this issue that have never advertised with us before. Help us welcome them and show your support. Call them! Shop locally, and please always remember to tell them where you saw their ad. Oh yea, and make sure to read “Adult Truths” on page 12. That article was one of the funniest we have had in a long time. Remember, if you have a joke or story you would like to see in the magazine, never hesitate to send it to us! Lastly, a very Happy Easter to everyone! MAGAZINE
Here is something I had meant to send you ages ago... better late then never! Why do we love advertising in Newsy Neighbour? Because we have found this to be incredibly effective advertising. We often will ask new customers how they found out about us, and their response is through the ad in your magazine. The Newsy Neighbour magazine is such a fun publication, that I believe people hang onto this magazine and read it when they get a chance. Then, upon seeing our ad and will call us late into the month. We have found that this has been one of the best places to advertise because the rates to advertise are so reasonable and the distribution is so high. As an advertiser, and a reader, we say: keep up the great publication! Ray & Sharon Sod Off Landscaping

MAPLE TREE (Independence of Mind) - No ordinary person, full of imagination and originality, shy and reserved, ambitious, proud, self-confident, hungers for new experiences, sometimes nervous, has many complexities, good memory, learns easily, complicated love life, wants to impress. WALNUT TREE (the Passion) - Unrelenting, strange and full of contrasts, often egotistic, aggressive, noble, broad horizon, unexpected reactions, spontaneous, unlimited ambition, no flexibility, difficult and uncommon partner, not always liked but often admired, ingenious strategist, very jealous and passionate, no compromise.
Aries. March 21 – April 19 Aries people are creative, adaptive, and insightful. They can be driven and are very ambitious often making them over-achievers. Aries are fire signs, and so too is their personality. They may be quick to anger, but don’t take it personally, it’s just their fiery, passionate personalities showing through. Aries signs have excellent sense of humour, and they get along with almost everyone at the party (and they DO know how to party). Aries can be impatient, but we love them anyway because they are devoted friends, lovers and family members – they are loyal to then end and will fight for their causes.
Taurus. April 20 - May 20 Taurus zodiac signs and meanings, like the animal that represents them, is all about strength, stamina and will. Stubborn by nature, the Taurus will stand his/her ground to the bitter end. Tthe Taurus is also a loving, sympathetic and appreciative sign. The Taurus is very understanding and when we need someone to unburden ourselves to, we often share our deepest fears with the Taurians of the zodiac. Taurians are very patient, practical and efficient, they are excellent in matters of business and are also wonderful teachers. Although initially they may have their own best interest at heart, they are ultimately & endlessly generous with their time, possessions and love www.thenewsyneighbour.com

A Netherland’s Sporting Experience!
In Calgary, we all know about the sea of red. In the Netherland’s they love their orange! Last month I attended the Essent ISU World Single Distance Championships at the famed Thialf Oval in Heerenveen. The four day championship was the final speed skating event on the 2011 – 2012 calendar. The atmosphere was similar to game 6 of the 2004 Stanley Cup Final in Calgary. The capacity of the Thialf Oval is about 12,000 and close to half of this is standing room on concrete bleachers. This is where the real speed skating fans enjoy the show. The cost of a standing room ticket for this event is 35 Euro. If you are not wearing orange, you are probably sitting in the four or five very high end VIP areas where guests pay up to 275 Euro for the privilege. If you are young and like to party, I suggest you stick with the standing room ticket. The beer is flowing (the Dutch do like their Heineken) and the party is on! During the flood breaks, the fans head outside to the party tents and live music. They eat, they drink, they sing and they dance! It doesn’t matter if you are a Canadian skater, a skater from Russia or if you are wearing the orange of Holland, the fans cheer loud and strong. Denny Morrison wins the men’s 1500 meter world championship and the building erupts. Christine Nesbitt wins two world titles and fans go crazy with respect. Sven Kramer of the Netherlands wins the men’s 5K and the noise is deafening. Okay so they do cheer a little harder for their own. The party will continue into the night! Off to the Heerenveen Heineken House. A huge party tent in the city center with live music and more beer. The tent closes at midnight because of the noise and the agreement with the local bars. Not to worry as the tent closes you are now off to ‘t Houtsje (a local skater bar) or one of the many nightclubs in the city center. These establishments will stay open until 5 or 6 in the morning as long are you are still willing to party. Did I mention the Dutch love their beer? Next stop on my sporting adventure is the Amsterdam Arena. With a beautiful retractable roof, the stadium seats 65,000 and is the home to AJAX. Thanks to my good friend Arjen Rahusen, we have been able to secure two prime tickets in the very posh Trefpunt suite. The atmosphere is electric! The building is sold out but if you are not sitting in a corporate VIP lounge or suite, you may not be able to find a beer. This is a very important game with championship implications and is considered “high risk.” High risk means no beer for the general public. The opposition for this game is PSV Eindhoven. If you are Page 14
The Newsy Neighbour
a fan of PSV you are segregated in your own section. You do not enter the building with the AJAX fans. You come to the stadium in your own train. You sit in a very high security area with extra police. When the game is over you are not allowed to leave the stadium until all the AJAX fans are gone. You are not allowed to go out the main entrance. You are directed right to the train station with your own private platform and you are sent right back to Eindhoven. If you are a PSA fan living in Amsterdam (there are not many), you cannot buy a ticket to the game. To purchase a ticket you must show your club affiliation card. You can buy a ticket in Eindhoven but you have to travel with the rest of fans on the train before you can come back to Amsterdam. I was thinking the Calgary Stampeders should try this system when the Rider nation comes to McMahon. If the Calgary Flames or the Edmonton Oilers are looking for a creative funding model to finance a new arena with corporate money, I suggest they steal a page from the Dutch playbook. The suites at the Amsterdam Arena were sold (much like you would buy a condo) to help fund the construction. The suite owners still have to purchase event tickets and hospitality but if they don’t want an event, they just keep the door locked. The suite I am in originally sold for 200,000 Euro and it is now valued at over 600,000 Euro. A solid investment if Trefpunt Sports Marketing ever decided to sell! So what is the final score? For this story it really doesn’t matter but I do imagine it was a long and quiet train ride home for the fans of PSA.

Colour Psychology - Do different colours affect your mood? Black - Black is the colour of authority and power. It is popular in fashion because it makes people appear thinner. It is also stylish and timeless. Black also implies submission. Priests wear black to signify submission to God. Some fashion experts say a woman wearing black implies submission to men. Black outfits can also be overpowering, or make the wearer seem aloof or evil. Villains, such as Dracula, often wear black. White - Brides wear white to symbolize innocence and purity. White reflects light and is considered a summer colour. White is popular in decorating and in fashion because it is light, neutral, and goes with everything. However, white shows dirt and is therefore more difficult to keep clean than other colours. Doctors and nurses wear white to imply sterility. Red - The most emotionally intense colour, red stimulates a faster heartbeat and breathing. It is also the colour of love. Red clothing gets noticed. Since it is an extreme colour, red clothing might not help people in negotiations or confrontations. Red cars are popular targets for thieves. In decorating, red is usually used as an accent. Pink - The most romantic colour, pink, is more tranquilizing. Sports teams sometimes paint the locker rooms used by opposing teams bright pink so their opponents will lose energy. Blue - The colour of the sky and the ocean, blue is one of the most popular colours. It causes the opposite reaction as red. Peaceful, tranquil blue causes the body to produce calming chemicals, so it is often used in bedrooms, but blue can also be cold and depressing. Fashion consultants recommend wearing blue to job interviews because it symbolizes loyalty. People are more productive in blue rooms. Studies show weightlifters are able to handle heavier weights in blue gyms. Green - Currently the most popular decorating colour, green symbolizes nature. It is the easiest colour on the eye and can improve vision. It is a calming, refreshing colour. People waiting to appear on TV sit in “green rooms” to relax. Hospitals often use green because it relaxes patients. Brides in the Middle Ages wore green to symbolize fertility. Dark green is masculine, conservative, and implies wealth. Yellow - Cheerful sunny yellow is an attention getter. While it is considered an optimistic colour, people lose their tempers more often in yellow rooms, and babies will cry more. It is the most difficult colour for the eye to take in, so it can be overpowering if overused. Yellow enhances concentration, hence its use for legal pads. It also speeds metabolism. Purple - The colour of royalty, purple connotes luxury, wealth, and sophistication. It is also feminine and romantic. However, because it is rare in nature, purple can appear artificial. Page 16

April 22nd is Earth Day and since spring is officially here in Canada and the rest of the northern hemisphere, the first day of the spring season is the day of the year when the sun crosses the celestial equator moving northward (on March 20th or 21st). This day is known as the Vernal Equinox. So this Earth Day, why not plan something creative for the family to do together? Nothing brings the family closer than when you have finished a project you have done together – something to brag to your neighbours about.
Tin Can Herb Pots
Make these charming tin can herb pots and watch them grow all summer long! This project not only recycles, it creates new life, and is a great Earth Day craft. Your child can watch their plants grow for months to come and be proud that they created the container that holds them. What you'll need: Empty aluminum can • Screwdriver and hammer • Acrylic craft paints in colors of your choice • Acrylic sealer spray, matte finish • 5-10 small rocks, stones or pebbles • potting soil • 4-inch potted herb plant • Flower stickers (optional) How to make it: Completely wash and dry aluminum can. If necessary, sand off any rough edges from opening of can. Turn can upside down. Parent should use screwdriver or other pointed object to poke holes in the bottom of the can. Use a hammer to tap the end of the screwdriver to make the holes. Paint can in the desired colour, repeat coats if needed. Decorate however you like. Use a thin paint brush for long lines, or dip the end of the paint brush into paint for polka dots. Decorate with stickers, if desired. In a well-ventilated area, spray the outside of the completed can with acrylic sealer spray. Let dry. Place enough rocks or pebbles in the bottom of the can to form a single layer. Add enough potting soil to fill the can two-thirds full. Remove potted herb from its container and transplant into the can. Fill edges with remaining potting soil, gently pat down so that plant is firmly in the can but not compacted so much that it’s too tight. Place can on a plate (to catch any water drainage) and add some water to the newly planted herbs. Place your new garden in a sunny window and remember to water them! This is a great project to teach kids about growing plants, especially edible ones. Take this opportunity to visit your local library and check out a book on simple container gardening or gardening with kids. Keep the kids involved, be sure they take care of “their” plant. Have them water their plant and show them how to check to see if the soil is too dry or just right by gently touching the soil surface with their finger. Eat these herbs! Your kids will light up when they get to pinch off a basil leaf to add to your spaghetti sauce.
Grow A Bean Teepee
Pole beans growing on a simple frame will quickly create a shady hideaway for the kids. You'll need a packet of pole bean seeds, three to six six-foot-long bamboo stakes (from the garden centre), a planting area about six feet square, straw for mulch and a two-foot length of string. Start our bean teepee around the time you would normally plant tomatoes - about two weeks after the last expected frost. Arrange stakes in a circle, sticking them into the ground 10 inches from bed edge, leaving a two-foot wide space, so kids can enter the teepee. Gather tops of stakes, wrap and tie them together with string. For quicker sprouting, soak bean seeds overnight, then plant following packet directions in a circle outside of the base of teepee. Water well. Place a two- to three-inch layer of straw over the soil in the middle to keep weeds down. As the bean plants grow, tie the stems carefully to teepee stakes. In six to eight weeks, bean plants will cover the structure and kids can play inside.
Hey, the kids will love this – just wait until they go to school and tell their friends they are growing their own pizza or spegetti sauce.
Grow a pizza garden
Kids can grow the fresh ingredients for pizza sauce - a couple of tomato plants, one each of basil, rosemary and oregano, plus half a dozen onions (use onion sets, which are small onion bulbs) and one green and one red pepper plant. Buy plants in spring, but don't transplant them into the garden until all danger of frost is past. Help kids prepare the soil. For fun, make the bed round or wedge shaped, and edge it with orange or yellow marigolds to resemble crust. At harvest time, buy plain pizza crust or pizza dough, and help kids cook up a sauce using garden fresh ingredients. Top the pizza crust with sauce, diced peppers and the usual pepperoni and cheese. How proud they will be to have grown their own pizza sauce! Now, this is something I have always wanted to have. I remember my grandmother on the farm always had a scarecrow in her garden. You could really have some fun with designer cloths and a hat – use your imagination!!
Build a scarecrow
Collect adult-sized old clothing - an old plaid shirt, a vest or jacket, a pair of jeans, old gloves (for the hands), and boots or socks (for the feet). Use straw, leaves or rags as stuffing. For a frame, use two pieces of wood with one stake tall enough for the height of clothing and 1 ½ feet extra to pound into ground. Cut the shorter stake the length of the shirt with arms stretched out. Nail the boards in a cross-like form. Stuff a pillowcase for the head first and tie up the round part with string, then pull the open-ended pillow fabric over the vertical stake and secure the string. For facial features, kids can use waterproof markers, or help them sew on buttons for eyes and nose. Fasten a straw hat with safety pins. Put the shirt onto the frame, do up the buttons and add the stuffing, tying the shirt's waist so stuffing stays in place. Pin or tie ends of pants and stuff. Use a belt through the loops to attach jeans to the stake and shirt. Use safety pins if necessary. Prop leg ends into boots or stuffed socks and pin stuffed gloves to ends of the shirt arms. Presto! You have a fun scarecrow decoration for the kids' garden. I hope I have inspired you to create one or two of these projects in celebration of Earth Day. The most important thing is to have fun. Hey, we should have a Scarecrow Contest! Send in
pictures of your scarecrow to The Newsy Neighbour and we will award some free passes to Shaker’s Fun Centre – (winner’s name will be announced in the May Issue); that way you can spend another fun day together with your family Happy Earth Day Kathryn Hartwell

Dear Mom & Dad It has been four months since I left for college. I have been remiss in writing and am very sorry for my thoughtlessness. I will bring you up to date now, but before you read on, please sit down. Don’t read any further unless you are sitting down... OK? Good. I am getting along pretty well now. The skull fracture and the concussion I got from jumping out of the window of my dormitory when it caught fire, shortly after my arrival, are pretty well healed now. I only spent two weeks in the hospital and now I can see almost normally and only get three headaches a day. Fortunately, the fire in the dormitory and my jump were witnessed by an attendant at a nearby gas station, and he was able to call the Fire Department and the ambulance. He also visited me at the hospital, and since I had nowhere to live because of the burnt-out dorm, he was kind enough to invite me to share his apartment with him. It’s really a basement room, but it is kind of cute. He is a very fine boy and we have fallen deeply in love and are planning to get married. We haven’t set the exact date yet, but I’m sure it will be before I start to show. Yes, Mom and Dad, I am pregnant. I know how much you are looking forward to being grandparents, and I know you will give the baby the same love and devotion and tender care you gave me when I was a child. The reason for the delay in our marriage is that my boyfriend has some minor infection which prevents us from passing our premarital blood tests and I carelessly caught it from him. This will soon clear up, thanks to my daily penicillin injections. I know you will welcome him into our family with open arms. He is kind, and although not well educated, he is ambitious. Also, he is of a different race and religion than ours, but I know, after all your years of teaching me tolerance, that you won’t mind. I am sure you will love him as I do. His family background is good, too; I am told that his father is an important gunbearer in his native African village. I guess that’s it. Now that I have brought you up to date, I want you to know....There was no dormitory fire, I did not have a concussion or skull fracture. I was not in the hospital, I am not pregnant, I am not engaged, I do not have syphilis and there is no uneducated gunbearer in my life. However, I am getting a “D” in History and an “F” in Science, and I wanted you to see these marks in their proper perspective. Your loving daughter, Chelsea Page 20

1) If you have to throw up, get into a chair, QUICKLY! If you can’t manage that in time, get to an Oriental rug. If no Oriental rug is available, any good rug will do. 2) ALWAYS accompany guests to the bathroom. It’s not necessary to do anything; just sit and stare. 3) Do not allow closed doors in ANY room. To get a door opened, stand on your hind legs and hammer with your forepaws. 4) When supervising cooking, sit just behind the left heel of the cook. You cannot be seen and thereby stand a better chance of being stepped on, picked up and consoled with food. 5) Once a door is opened, it’s not necessary to use it. After you’ve ordered an outside door opened, stand halfway in and halfway out and think about several things. It’s particularly important during very cold weather, rain, snow, and mosquito season. 6) Begin people training early. You’ll then have a smooth-running household. Humans need to know the basic rules. They can be taught if you start early and are consistent.

BODY PARTS – ACHES AND PAINS
There is nothing worse than those nagging aches and pains. But when is an ache or pain something you should be taking seriously? Muscle aches and pains are common and can involve more than one muscle. Muscle pain also can involve ligaments, tendons, and fascia (the soft tissues that connect muscles), bones, and organs. Muscle pain is most frequently related to tension, overuse, or muscle injury from exercise or physically-demanding work. In these situations, the pain tends to involve specific muscles and starts during or just after the activity. It is usually obvious which activity is causing the pain. Muscle pain also can be a sign of conditions affecting your whole body, like some infections (including the flu) and disorders that affect connective tissues throughout the body (such as lupus). One common cause of muscle aches and pain is fibromyalgia, a condition that includes tenderness in your muscles and surrounding soft tissue, sleep difficulties, fatigue, and headaches. Muscle pain may also be due to: Certain drugs, including: ACE inhibitors for lowering blood pressure, cocaine, and statins for lowering cholesterol. But there are many other conditions you may not be aware of:Dermatomyositis - Dermatomyositis is a muscle disease characterized by inflammation and a skin rash. It is a type of inflammatory myopathy. Electrolyte imbalances - too little potassium or calcium Infections, including influenza (the flu), Lyme disease (a bacterial infection spread through the bite of the blacklegged tick), malaria (a parasitic disease that involves high fevers, shaking chills, flu-like symptoms, and anemia), muscle abscess (a collection of puss in any part of the body that, in most cases, causes swelling and inflammation around it), polio (also known as Poliomyelitis, a viral disease that can affect nerves and can lead to partial or full paralysis), Rocky Mountain spotted fever (a disease brought on by a type of bacteria carried by ticks), Trichinosis (an infection with the roundworm Trichinella spiralis), Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) (an inflammatory disorder involving pain and stiffness in the shoulder and usually also the hip), Polymyositis (a relatively uncommon inflammatory disease that leads to muscle weakness, swelling (inflammation), tenderness, and damage. It is part of a larger group of diseases called myositis), and Rhabdomyolysis (the breakdown of muscle fibres that leads to the release of muscle fibre contents (myoglobin) into the bloodstream. Myoglobin is harmful to the kidney and often causes kidney damage). For muscle pain from overuse or injury, rest that body part and take acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Apply ice for the first 24 - 72 hours of an injury to reduce pain and inflammation. After that, heat often feels more soothing. Muscle aches from overuse and fibromyalgia often respond well to massage. Gentle stretching exercises after a long rest period are also helpful. Regular exercise can help restore proper muscle tone. Walking, cycling, and swimming are good aerobic activities to try. A physical therapist can teach you stretching, toning, and aerobic exercises to feel better and stay pain-free. Begin slowly and increase workouts gradually. Avoid high-impact aerobic activities and weight lifting when injured or while in pain. Be sure to get plenty of sleep and try to reduce stress. Yoga and meditation are excellent ways to help you sleep and relax. If home measures aren’t working, your health care provider may prescribe medication or physical therapy, or refer you to a specialized pain clinic. Call your health care provider if: Your muscle pain persists beyond 3 days, You have severe, unexplained pain, You have any sign of infection, like swelling or redness around the tender muscle, You have poor circulation in the area where you have muscles aches (for example, in your legs), You have a tick bite or a rash, Your muscle pain has been associated with starting or changing doses of a medicine, such as a statin. Call 911 if: You have sudden weight gain, water retention, or you are urinating less than usual, You are short of breath or have difficulty swallowing, You have muscle weakness or cannot move any part of your body, You have vomiting, a very stiff neck, or high fever www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Translation please…. Studies say our new HE dishwasher with a hydrofunnfer turbolater will ensure your dishes are 32% cleaner and use less energy! There appears to be a maxim to marketing strategies whether it be consumer goods, ‘must have’ services or games, political pronouncements, media statements, polls, etc. – the list goes on – that states the consumer (reader) will never ask any difficult questions or express any skepticism about what is being proclaimed. Some say there is disturbing evidence to indicate this may be right! So, what about our hydrofunnfer turbolater or these 32% cleaner dishes? A dishwasher is designed for one main purpose; to clean dishes. It should clean dishes no matter how dirty and most dishwashers do this fairly well. The difference is how efficiently (water, energy, detergent, time duration, etc) they do this. Manufacturers basking (baking??) in the golden glow of government energy and environmental guidelines are being forced to continually be more energy efficient while still mainly satisfying the consumer needs. One of the ways to do this in a dishwasher is to vary the amount of washtime based on the cycle selected or how dirty the dishes are (auto or sensor type cycles). This can be done by electronically measuring the ‘turbidity’ (clearness) of the water. ‘Dirty’, the wash cycle continues, if ‘clean’ rinsing can begin. This can be more water & energy efficient if your dishwasher stops washing when your dishes are clean. Good so far? Now – how does the manufacturer market this? Although up for debate, most of us should have figured out the catchy name game by now, thus the hydrofunnfer turbolater (sounds more techy than ‘clean water sensor’??). The numbers are a whole different world. We think that 32% is 32% right? Not so fast. First off, 32% of what? Your dishes? That can mean one out of three plates will be cleaner. (33% is 1/3 or .33 for those with math issues). The whole load? Great, but what if it takes two hours longer? Even more interesting – suppose your competition can ‘prove’ that its dishwasher with the ‘hydrofunnfer turbolater XL’ can get almost one and a half (1.5) out of three plates cleaner – that’s about 50% cleaner and almost 50% better than yours! It might take four hours but that’s not mentioned… Welcome to the numbers game and we still haven’t defined ‘cleaner’. Make no mistake, modern appliances are more energy and water efficient, as well as generally being very effective at their function. Most manufacturers put a fair amount of research and thought into appliance design and function. End user (consumer) requirements are certainly a part of this research. No manufacturer wants to be accused of false or misleading numbers but they have to obtain and (if required) explain them somehow. The marketing of products sometimes seems to be more creative… if you turn on your dishwasher and open your kitchen door, will you see rainbows and stars? Well, possibly if you slip, fall and hit your head – but otherwise probably not. Your independent retailer must keep up on the methodology of appliances and how the technology is applied in the consumer’s home. The final answer – yes, some features are a very good idea – sensor wash being one of them but high tech names and numbers should be looked at carefully. Remember a smart consumer keeps a skeptical eye out and knows what functions and features they want and require. Try this site for a light but critical gaze at science (check out the section on science & celebrities) and a short layman’s primer on the numbers game (statistics): http:// www.senseaboutscience.org. Wedding Favours Wedding favours say that you appreciate that your guests took time away from their busy schedule to be with you on your wedding day. Most brides and grooms provide drinks and food for their guests, but if you want to do something more, consider upping the ante with little gifts that say a lot. Favours also add to the festivities as part of the decorations. Coordinate your favours with the theme of your wedding and wedding invitations, place cards, program, and menu sheets. One elegant way to do this is to stay with the seasons. Spring - Nothing says spring like pastel colours, fresh greenery and flowers - lots of flowers. Lay coloured table cloths or heavy duty paper table cloths underneath lace cloths. Or buy inexpensive wall paper in floral prints and use that as the table topper with a gathered skirt around the table itself. Of course, you’ll have floral centre pieces for each table at the reception but don’t stop there. Scatter blossom, buds, and petals across the table. Favours that continue the springtime theme include a Butterfly Wine Stopper for each guest or Miniature Wooden Birdhouses with “Love Nest” inscribed on the front. For do- it-yourselfers, have stickers or cards personalized with your names and wedding date. Attach with a festive ribbon to colour-coordinated boxes filled pastel mints, potpourri, or a single flower-shaped candle. Summer - Warm breezes, the beach, and bright colours all say ‘summer’. Hand Fans in SSA paper provide cooling breezes and will be appreciated by your guests at an outside reception. Summer wedding receptions can be dramatic or fun. Tropical flowers, such as orchids, proteas, and ginger aren’t cheap but they are so unusual you only need one or two in a vase. Fill the vase with lemons, kumquats or limes before inserting the flowers for even more colour. Lay a runner of palm branches or banana leaves down the tables to continue the tropical theme. Evoke the beach even if you’re miles away by using vases filled with pale blue water and masses of baby’s breath. Spread seashells around the vases and a few starfish. Add Seashell Candles as the favours. Fall - Crisp days, gold and burgundy chrysanthemums, and falling leaves put anyone in an autumn mood. Instead of flowers, use piles of apples as the centrepiece for the tables. Pumpkins, squash, and gourds make a fall floral arrangement when interspersed with yellow and red mums. If you’re ambitious, hollow out the pumpkins and use them as containers for potted mums. Fill Autumn Elegance Favour Boxes with gold, yellow, red, and burgundy jelly beans for guests to take home. Winter - Winter means snow, icicles and, of course, Christmas. If your wedding has a winter wonderland theme, create a snowscape. Sprinkle white, silver, and iridescent glitter on a white table cloth. Use silver chargers at each place setting. Place a mirror in the centre of the table surrounded by artificial snow so the snow covers the edges of the mirror. Hot glue silver and white iridescent snowflakes to the mirror so they stand upright. Place votive candles in glass holders around the snowflakes. When the candles are lit, the sparkle begins. Continue the winter theme with Snowflake Place Card Holders, Snowflake Gel Candles, and Winter Wonderland Glass Coasters. Your guests won’t soon forget your wedding. Any extras make wonderful keepsakes for your first holidays together as a married couple. Thanking your guests for joining you in your wedding celebration lets them know how special they are. My budget is $4,500 for 100 guests. What type of wedding & reception can we have and how nice will it be? I would suggest you make a list of all the things that you need (like a marriage license, tuxedo rentals, bridal party gifts), and then list the things that you would like to have with your wedding. Then, start pricing things out and see what you can afford to do. Start with the essentials. Anything left over can go for those things on your “want” list instead of the “need” list. A Google search on ‘wedding planning’ will give you a number of lists that will help in your wedding planning. A Google search on ‘wedding budgets’ will help you with budgeting your money effectively.
When is a good time to start planning a wedding? We have picked a date, which is a year and 4 months away… is it too early to start shopping around now? I would start your wedding planning now, and start with booking the venues for your wedding and reception. Those fill up fast. As for the rest of your planning, it will take longer than you anticipate, so the sooner you get things done, the more you can relax closer to the wedding date. It’s much more fun planning a spa day with the ladies in your wedding party a few days before the wedding than running around trying to get things done.

10 Basic Truths About Keeping Your Relationship Healthy I think it’s easy to make things more complicated than they need to be. Here are some basic rules of the relationship road that will keep you headed in the right direction. 1. Successful relationships take work. They don’t happen in a vacuum. They occur when the couples in them take the risk of sharing what it is that’s going on in their hearts and heads. 2. You can only change yourself, not your partner. If you love someone and think that after a while he or she will alter behaviours you find uncomfortable, think again. If you want changes, put them on the table, so your partner knows what you need. 3. All arguments stem from our own fear or pain. When upset occurs, check out what’s going on inside you rather than getting angry with your partner. Truth is that we usually aren’t upset for the reasons we think we are. 4. Understand that men and women are very different. We’re not from Mars or Venus; we’re not even in the same solar system. Understanding and celebrating our differences will make living together more peaceful, interesting and fun. 5. Honour each other in some way every day. Every morning, you have the opportunity to make your relationship sweeter and deeper by recommitting to your mate. Feeling respected and cherished by the one you love makes life much nicer. 6. Anger is a waste of time. Anger also is a relationship killer because it makes you self-absorbed Get the gift you’ve been and won’t allow you to see the good. Looking for their wives Two guys, one old and one young, are pushing their carts around Home Depot, when they collide. The old guy says to the young guy, “Sorry about that. I’m looking for my wife, and I guess I wasn’t paying attention to where I was going.” The young guy says, “That’s OK. That’s a coincidence; I’m looking for my wife, too. I can’t find her and I’m getting a little desperate.” The old guy says, “Well, maybe we can help each other. What does your wife look like? The young guy says, “Well, she’s a redhead with blue eyes, long legs, big boobs, and she’s wearing a blue midriff tank-top and white shorts. What does your wife look like?” The old guy says, “Doesn’t matter - let’s look for yours.” You have to come see for yourself!

At the cocktail party, one woman said to another, “Aren’t you wearing your wedding ring on the wrong finger?” The other replied “Yes, I am; I married the wrong man.” After a quarrel, a wife said to her husband, “You know, I was a fool when I married you.” The husband replied, “Yes, dear, but I was in love and didn’t notice.” When a man steals your wife, there is no better revenge than to let him keep her. I haven’t spoken to my wife in 18 months - I don’t like to interrupt her. A man said his credit card was stolen but he decided not to report it because the thief was spending less than his wife did. Women will never be equal to men until they can walk down the street with a bald head and a beer gut, and still think they are beautiful. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

We have been trying to plan our perfect wedding. My husband is Italian, but I am not. I am trying to come up with ideas to find a perfect between theme to the expectations and food. My family is simple, his is not. I need to find a way to make both families happy during our happy day. I need advice. My suggestion is that you and your fiancé sit down together and share what each of you thinks your wedding should be like. Write it down. What does he expect? What do you expect? Once you have that done, determine your budget. It’s great to have big plans for a wedding, but it costs money. Where will the money come from? If his family is adamant about something extravagant that you can’t afford, it is pointless to plan for it, or argue about it. Or maybe, if they knew it wasn’t in the budget, they might want to pay for it if it is important to them. Think of this as a trial run for your future life together. You will probably come across many traditions that are different, and how you handle it now will set the tone for your future together. If you still need advice, consider hiring a wedding consultant for a few hours to help you get everything resolved. Your wedding is not about pleasing your family or his family. Your wedding is an expression of the two of you and should reflect who you are as a couple—not your families.
I am having a hard time figuring out what to put on my wedding cake. My colours are black and white and I have a classic, clean look for my table decorations. Do I have to follow that theme for my wedding cake or can I do something different for that? You can go with the same theme as the rest of your wedding with your wedding cake or you can “punch it up” with a hit of colour. On the face of it, I would suggest RED in your cake decorations. What colour are you using for your flowers? Are you having any other “hits” of colour here or there in your wedding colour scheme? If so, you should follow those colours in your wedding cake to keep it as part of the theme. The cake can be different than the “black and white” of your colour scheme. I would suggest that the decoration is not too “frilly” so it goes with your classic, clean look you have achieved in the rest of your decorations. Simple and elegant, with a hit of colour would be my suggestion. Any colour goes with black and white, so take your pick. Can the cake decoration colour match your flowers? How would that look?
Are You Planning A Wedding Or A Special Anniversary In The Near Future? Take a drive in the country and come see the recently renovated Gleichen and District Community Centre. The rates are reasonable and it has everything that you would need for that memorable day. We have new dishes, cutlery, chairs and 2 sizes of banquet tables that can seat up to 200 guests. There is a limited variety of tablecloths and cloth napkin choices available. We have totally renovated the kitchen to make it a commercial kitchen, complete with a huge walk in cooler so that you can have your food prepared on site. Catering and licensed ASAP bar attendants are available. Secret to a long Marriage With a couple celebrating their 50th anniversary at the church’s marriage marathon, the minister asked Brother Ralph to take a few minutes and share some insight into how he managed to live with the same woman all these years. The husband replied to the audience, “Well, I treated her with respect, spent money on her, but mostly I took her traveling on special occasions.” The minister inquired, “Trips to where?” “For our 25th anniversary, I took her to Beijing, China.” The minister then said, “What a terrific example you are to all husbands, Ralph. Please tell the audience what you’re going to do for your wife on your 50th anniversary?” Ralph: “I’m going to go get her.”

~~ WEDDING PAGES ~~ I chose for my wedding a colour theme of red and cream. I told my bridesmaids that as long as their dress will be red and long, I am happy. I want them to feel comfortable with the outfit. One of them already bought hers. Do you think I took the right decision? The only concern I would have is that not all reds are the same. Some reds are quite bright, and some have a grey undertone, and not every person sees the same colour or shade of colour. People are different, and how we see colour differs. So, my question would be: Do you want different shades of red for your bridesmaids? If so, then yes, you have gone about it the right way. If you want everyone to be the exact same colour, then you need to define the exact colour. Having everyone choose their own red colour and their own style is very “European”—the American style being more rigid in having everyone in the exact same dress. But you wanted my opinion. Yes, I think you made the right decision in allowing everyone their individuality.
I’m planning to do an outdoor wedding. Do you have any ideas? You could have it in your backyard, or in the backyard of a family member. Another idea is the yard of your church, which would give you a place to go in case it rains. Many outdoor weddings take place in a public park or some other civic site—like public gardens, or a historical site. Sometimes hotels or clubs have space for an outdoor wedding. A lot depends upon your budget, and whether you are looking for a formal or informal site. These ideas should get you started.
The couple has requested cash instead of gifts. How much is appropriate without being excessive or cheap? Usually, a cash gift is the ‘cost per plate’ plus what you feel you would spend on a physical gift. This varies in different cities and venues. If there are two of you, then you would add the cost of another plate to that amount. Just because the couple ask for cash, you don’t have to give cash. A gift is something that is freely given by the giver, and should never be dictated by the recipient.

PARENT LINK
Parent Link Centers are Provincially funded to support parents and caregivers by providing early childhood development programs and services that are uniquely designed to meet the unique needs of children and families in Alberta communities. Each centre offers parent education programs, programs for young children to learn and play, information and referrals, family support services (such as lending libraries, resource exchanges, family counseling, etc.) and developmental screening to support optimal child development. Parent Link Centres are all about connecting parents to parents and resources in their home community. To access developmental screening or for information about other Parent Link Centre programs and services in S.E. Rocky View call Community Services at 403-207-7060.
AGES AND STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT SEVEN TO NINE MONTHS By Jeanette MacKay, Reprinted
This is the third in a series of articles on child development written to help parents and caregivers recognize and understand the ages and stages of a child’s physical, emotional, social and intellectual development during the first five years. These are only guidelines as every child is unique with their own personality, learning style and family background. There are, however, some general similarities that can help you recognize the stages of development and offer a nurturing environment where your child may develop to their full potential. The Parent Link Centre also offers developmental screening so that you can monitor and celebrate your child’s progress, or access information for early intervention when this seems appropriate. During the seventh to ninth months of age your baby continues to show remarkable new abilities. Emotionally, baby is showing expression of his emotions in more defined ways. He will laugh because he has discovered that he can, look worried when hearing loud or strange noises, express fright when encountering new experiences or people, and show definite strong feelings about his likes and dislikes. Physically, baby’s fine motor skills are developing so that now she may be able to pick up tiny objects with thumb and forefinger and hold objects in both hands or pass an object from hand to hand. She explores her world by banging, shaking and sliding objects, and will drop objects and then look for them or better yet have you look for them! Baby’s gross motor abilities are developing so that she can balance while sitting and is able to sit for longer periods of time. She will sit and bounce or do a ‘bum’ shuffle to move from place to place. She will sometimes try to pull herself to a standing position and she stands firmly on her legs when supported in a standing position. Intellectually, baby is recognizing words such as “bottle” and “where’s mommy”. He understands in and out, and will place ob-
jects in a container and dump them out. He recognizes size and will grasp larger objects with both hands and pick up smaller objects with a finger – thumb grasp. Baby associates sounds to objects such as choo-choo to trains. Socially, baby loves to play games such as So Big and Pat-aCake. She will hold her hands over her eyes to play Peek-a-Boo and likes to ‘perform’. She intentionally points and will shout for attention. Comfort, play with, and teach your child by providing the appropriate motor and sensory stimulation. Provide finger foods for baby and create routines for feeding, bedtime and naptime. Always respond to baby’s calls for help and attention. Play oneto-one games such as finding his eyes, nose, mouth and ears.Use mirror play letting your baby pat and poke at himself in the mirror. Play games of Peek-a-boo using scarves, blankets and covering eyes with hands. When baby is on his tummy place toys a little out of reach to encourage movement but not so far as to cause frustration. Copy baby’s actions and follow his lead blowing kisses, clapping, shaking a toy, and responding to his babbling. Read books with baby letting him hold the book and turn the pages. Try to arrange play time with other babies to provide your baby with an opportunity for socializing. Encouraging your baby to explore his world through play will provide him with the best opportunity for developing to his full potential. HAVE FUN!

As I was treating my daughter and her family to the buffet at a casino, all the bells and whistles for a winning slot machine began to go off. My seven-year-old grandson was awed. “Wow!” yelled Casey. “This is like Chuck E. Cheese for old people.”

Girl Birthday Idea
For my daughter’s 12th birthday party, she wanted to have a disco party, because she loves to dance. So, we did! INVITATIONS: We sent a flyer to 10 of her best friends that said when the party was. “You’re invited to: The (enter last name here) Disco Club! Friday, January 14th at 6:30pm.” And it mentioned all the necessary information. DECORATIONS: I decorated the house while my daughter was at school, and I put disco balls and banners all over the house. We made a sign for the front door that said (Last name here) Disco Club and it had a disco ball in the middle. I put a disco ball in the living room where the “dance floor” was. We moved a lot of furniture out of the room so there was more room to dance. I hung up colourful CDs in the den where the girls played Just Dance. On the chandelier in the dining room I put mini disco balls hanging from it (mini disco ball ornaments). I also put a tablecloth on the table that Age appropriate themes from Disney Princess, said “Disco Fever”. We had a table in the living room where we had Hanna Montana, Circus Circus and many more. my daughter’s MP3 player hooked up to some speakers so the music Two hour party rental includes One hour dance would be loud. We also put a lava lamp in the living room. We borrowed the disco ball in the living room and the lights to shine on it but and activities class one hour for gifts and cake! we bought a thing that makes it rotate at a party supply store. I put a sign-in sheet by the front door so the girl’s parents could put their phone numbers so I could contact them if I needed to and we had glow sticks beside the sign-in sheet so the girls could take some when they arrived. When everyone arrived, we played a game to introduce everyone since some girls didn’t know each other. We passed around a bowl of candy and everyone took 3-5 pieces. For every www.edgdancestrathmore.com piece they had to tell something about themselves. After the game, 126 Canal Garden. Strathmore, AB Ph: 403-901-6392 I took pictures of everyone around my daughter then everyone trying to hold up my daughter. They were really cute and funny! After that they ate cake and chips and had punch. Her cake was bright orange with a pink border around it, two tiered (1 tier chocolate 1 tier white) and it had silhouettes of people dancing around the bottom tier and lime green peace signs around the top tier. The top of the cake had big sparklers. Over all, everyone had a great time and said it was the best party ever! I had fun watching my daughter have fun with her friends! I can’t wait until next year! “
Birthday parties with a difference
Boy Birthday Idea
We had an Alien party for my son’s 8th birthday. In all, we had about 20 kids. INVITATIONS: I couldn’t find any invitations to go with the theme, so we made our own. I bought green card stock paper and, using an egg cookie cutter, I traced an egg shape on the paper. Turning it upside down, it looked like an alien head. My son and I drew eyes, nose and mouth to complete the alien head. The inside said: “Join us for Out of This World Fun!” Followed by the info. DECORATIONS: We decorated using black, green and blue balloons. Again we couldn’t find alien party supplies so we used black plates and cups. The table cloth was a black plastic one from the dollar store, which my son and daughter decorated with star stickers. ACTIVITIES and GAMES: When the kids got here I had space scenes for them to decorate. After that we played Alien Bingo. Instead of B-I-N-G-O, the card said A-L-I-E-N. I made them using the same www.triggers.ca The Newsy Neighbor Page 15 green card stock as the invitations. The middle space had an alien head, which was the free space. They LOVED it and we played about 6 times!! The prizes were glow sticks and candy. Then it was Includes 6 stuffies time for pizza and cake. The cake was an alien head, green with 1 Outfit for the Birthday child (Up to $14.99 value) black eyes nose and mouth. I used melting chocolate for the face. It was made in a 10 inch round pan and trimmed to alien head 1/4th of a slab of cake in chocolate or white shape. PARTY FAVOURS: Each child got a goody bag. Inside were 6 Cans of pop. Call for glow in the dark plastic planets and stars to stick on the ceiling, a $149.99 + tax more glow-in-the-dark alien bouncing ball and pop rocks. The party was details! $18.50 for each additional kid supposed to last from 1 to 3 o’clock but at 3 everyone was having so much fun they stayed until about 5! Pets are just like a family member for most of us. We fall in love with them; they love us back, with no questions asked. We care for them, and they protect us. There is an understanding between a pet and owner that needs no explanation. So we try to look after them as best we can. Here are some natural ways we can help your beloved pets heal: with crystals, Himalayan salts and just with the love of a touch (massage). All information that is offered here is intended for educational purposes only. LUSCIOUS JOYS With all this wonderful sunshine lately, I just cannot help but think of spring! When I think of spring, I remember all the fragrances of new spring flowers and budding trees and the blissful smell of my apple tree. Which brings me to this months Luscious Joys – Apples! The strange thing is, I am extremely allergic to them and perhaps that is why I love the aroma of an apple. I haven’t tried these yet but can hardly wait to make these for my children and fill my home with bliss! APPLE CHIPS Make your own apple chips at home in the oven! My grandmother always made apple and banana chips with a dehydrator, and they were amazing... so I had to figure out how to do it my own way! Perfect for after school snacks or road trips. These chips are thin sliced, soaked in a simple syrup and baked low and slow. The prep time is around 15 minutes, and cook time is 1 to 1 1/2 hours. This recipe makes about 50 chips. You need: 2 cups water, 2 cups sugar, 2 large apples or 3 small ones. That’s it! You can spice your apples with cinnamon or cloves if you like, but I like them just as they are. As far as hardware, you’ll need: Baking sheets, Parchment paper, A small pan to make the simple syrup in, A mandolin or a sharp knife, A cutting board, Tongs. Make the simple syrup: Pour the two cups of water and sugar into your pan, and bring it to a boil. Stir it once it comes to a boil to make sure there’s no sugar stuck to the bottom of the pan and it’s all dissolving. Once it’s clear, turn off the heat and let it hang out while you prep the apples. Slice your apples and preheat oven to 250°F. Using a mandolin, cut the apples in slices to 1/16 of an inch. You can cut them wider, but they will take much longer to cook, and will not be as crisp (though I suppose you could turn the oven up to 300 or so to help out). Slice off the rounded side of the apple until you get a nice wide piece of flesh, then start making your slices for the chips. Discard or eat the other rounded side as well. Keep going right through the center of the apple - don’t worry about coring them or the seeds, stem, or woody insides - we’ll take care of any problems in a second. Use a paring knife to remove any seed fragments, stems, or fuzzy bits from the bottom of the apple. Don’t worry about the core - since we’ll be soaking them in the warm syrup, it’ll soften. Place the apples in the simple syrup and soak for 10 minutes. Stirring a couple times. Using tongs, lift the apples one by one from the syrup, shake off the excess and place them on the parchment paper. Don’t overlap them, but try to get as many on the baking sheets as you can. Flatten them as you go. If you would like to add spices, now is the time to do so. Just sprinkle it over the top. You now have awesome apple flavoured simple syrup to use in teas, lemonade, or to make another batch of apple chips! You can store it in the fridge! And the slices that wouldn’t fit on the sheet? You should probably just eat those. One baking sheet will go in the middle of the oven, and the other right below. Cook them for a half hour, and then rotate the trays so the top one is on the bottom. Cook for another half hour and check. Depending on your oven, both sheets might be done; but in my case, only the one on the bottom rack was. If they’re done, they should be golden brown and crisp. If they’re not, give them 15 more minutes and check again, continuing to do so until they’re done. My second tray took an additional 30 minutes or so. Keep in mind that they will harden up a bit once you take them out of the oven.

It is important to know your eye shape in order to help you use the correct techniques to bring out their beauty. Wide-apart eyes - These types of eyes tend to give your face an open, youthful appearance. This look can be intensified by applying the strongest eye makeup effects near the outer corner of the eye. Keep shadow uniform and within outer corners. Brush lashes straight up. Close-set eyes - These types of eyes have a dramatic, sultry look. They can be enhanced by concentrating colour near the eye’s inner corners. Extend smoky shadow beyond outer corners to exaggerate them. Brush lashes out. Evenly spaced eyes - These types of eyes are about an eye’s distance apart. They can be made to look special with many eye makeup looks. Almond eyes - These types of eyes are the most common eye shape with their upswept lift at the outer corner. These eyes call for creativity. They can be made to look deeper and more intense. Small eyes - They types of eyes are proportionately smaller in comparison to the rest of the facial features. To enhance small eyes, line upper and lower (never inside) eyes. Use pale, shimmery, eye shadow. Be sure to curl lashes. Prominent eyes - These types of eyes are set far forward in the face and tend to dominate the facial features. The eye-
lids are, too, pronounced. Medium to deep shades of shadow on the lids help to minimize their appearance. Liners applied to the lash bases from corner to corner gives prominent eyes a smoldering and mysterious look. Hooded eyes - These eyes are set so the natural crease in the eyelid is not readily seen. Highlighting the brow bone and lining the lash base gives hooded eyes an alluring shape. Deep-set eyes - These eyes seem to recede, and needs to be brought forward. The eyelid crease is set back so the area from the base of lashes to brow bone seems hidden. To enhance the deep-set eyes line upper and lower lids (never just upper). Choose light shadows - pale pink, peach or beige - of eye shadow. More intense shading on the brow bone also gives the eyes prominence. Oriental eyes - These eyes have a distinctive lift at the corner and have very little lid. The depth of the eyes can increase by deep shades of eye shadow and the dimension can be increased by applying eyeliner as close as possible to the lash base. - Submitted by Shirra Turner

YOGA Have you ever thought about getting into a yoga class or just doing a little yoga on your own? There are lots of books and disks out there and you just need to find the one that suits you. I started doing yoga about 4 months ago now. I’m not one to join classes; I would rather make a fool of myself with no one watching. So, I bend and stretch in the comfort of my own basement with no one watching. That’s just me – classes are probably a better way to learn to do the “asanas” correctly! What exactly is yoga? Well, it is the union occurring between the mind, body and spirit. The heart of any yoga practice is the performance of yoga positions (called asanas), each of which has specific physical and and mental benefits. Many people think that yoga is just stretching. But while stretching is certainly involved, yoga is really about creating balance in the body through developing both strength and flexibility. Yoga is not just about standing on our head or bending in all sorts of contorted positions. It is the uniting of body, mind, and spirit, encouraging a full experience of the intricate relationship between them and how to bring this relationship into balance. The effect of yoga develops over a period of time, subtly changing the way we move, think, feel and behave. It helps us recognize our resistances and go beyond them. Without pushing or straining, we breathe and move through a posture, simultaneously watching the mind going beyond its own limitations. If you’ve been apprehensive about attending a yoga class because you’re afraid you won’t be able to bend into the shape of a pretzel, never fear! Yoga is a gentle, slow-moving exercise that helps to create awareness necessary to be in tune with your body. All that matters is that you do your personal best. If you can’t touch your knees at first, no problem; postures can be modified to accommodate your current level. And yoga can help us in so many ways. Check out this list of health and other issues that yoga can help with! Practicing yoga is a perfect way to help deal with Western cultural problems of incorrect posture, aggressive lifestyles, job stress, demanding family lives, overeating and indigestion, and stiff muscles and joints. The many benefits of yoga include increased flexibility, profound relaxation, clarity of thought, and improved muscle tone and strength, as well as improved balance, coordination, concentration, and oxygen intake. Yoga practice can also help manage anxiety, arthritis, asthma, back pain, blood pressure, carpal tunnel syndrome, chronic fatigue, depression, diabetes, heart disease, menopausal symptoms, migraines, multiple sclerosis, and osteoporosis. Yoga begins by working with the body on a structural level, helping to align the vertebrae, increase flexibility, and strengthen muscles and connective tissue. At the same time, internal organs are toned and rejuvenated, the epidermal, digestive, lymphatic, cardiovascular, and pulmonary systems are purified of toxins and waste matter, the nervous and endocrine systems are balanced and toned, and brain cells are nourished and stimulated. The end result is increased mental clarity, emotional stability, and a greater sense of overall well-being. All I know is that when I started I could not even touch my toes and now I’m grabbing the bottom of my feet. I feel better overall and if I go a day without doing my yoga I just don’t feel the same! My posture has improved and I just feel happier. So if you are looking for a new little something that is going to make you feel better, try yoga – you won’t be sorry. Kathryn Hartwel

WHAT’S QUIRKY IN THE WORLD TODAY We hope you enjoyed our first article in the March Issue about all the metal boxes washing up on the beaches all over the world. Here are two more interesting reports I wanted to share with you. GIANT WHIRLPOOL CHURNS UP OCEAN SOUTH OF AFRICA February 23, 2012 – AFRICA - A NASA satellite has provided jaw-dropping pictures of a huge ‘storm’ brewing under the sea. The swirling mass of water , which measures a whopping 93 miles wide, has been spotted off the coast of South Africa by the Terra satellite on December 26. But there’s no need to alert international shipping, or worry about the poor fish that might find themselves in an endless washing cycle – the body of water poses no threat. Indeed, it is more likely to create life by sucking nutrients from the bed and bringing them to the surface. The sea storms, which are better known as eddies, form bizarre whirl shaped shapes deep beneath the ocean’s surface. This counter-clockwise eddy is thought to have peeled off from the Agulhas Current, which flows along the southeastern coast of Africa and around the tip of South Africa. Agulhas eddies – also called ‘current rings’ – tend to be among the largest in the world, transporting warm, salty water from the Indian Ocean to the South Atlantic. Agulhas eddies can remove juvenile fish from the continental shelf, reducing catch sizes if one passes through a fishing region. The bizarre phenomenon was spotted when the Terra satellite was conducting a routine natural-colour image of the Earth. –Daily Mail IS ELECTROMAGNETIC PHENOMENA RESPONSIBLE FOR STRANGE SOUNDS BEING REPORTED? March 6, 2012 – WORLD - Mysterious sounds have been heard booming from the sky all around the world; in some cases they were so loud they set off car alarms. The unsettling noises were heard recently from Europe to Canada, sounding like groans and powerful horns. In Germany, noises coming from the sky were recorded on a video camera and uploaded to YouTube, with car alarms clearly heard going off in the background. But experts have said that there are rational explanations. University of Saskatchewan physics professor Jean-Pierre St. Maurice told CTV that Geoscientist David Deming from the University of Oklahoma, meanwhile, has previously written about a phenomenon called The Hum – ‘a mysterious and untraceable sound that is heard in certain locations around the world by two to ten per cent of the population’. Writing in the Journal of Scientific Exploration, he said that sources of The Hum could include telephone transmissions and ‘aircraft operated by the U.S Navy for the purpose of submarine communications.’ According to NASA, the Earth has ‘natural radio emissions’. The Agency said: ‘If humans had radio antennas instead of ears, we would hear a remarkable symphony of strange noises coming from our own planet. Scientists call them “tweeks,” “whistlers” and “sferics” They sound like background music from a flamboyant science fiction film, but this is not science fiction. Earth’s natural radio emissions are real and, although we’re mostly unaware of them, they are around us all the time. For instance lightning can produce eerie-sounding radio emissions, NASA added. Earthquakes can also produce subaudible sounds, according to seismologist Brian W Stump from the Southern Methodist University in Dallas. –Daily Mail. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Garden Pests Rabbits and Deer Rabbit populations go up and down regularly; there is not a lot we can do about them. Deer are different; there is a leader they follow. If you can deter the lead deer, the rest should follow. First you have to use your private detective skills to figure out where they enter and leave your yard. You can focus on the following two areas. Deer use their senses, smell, hearing, and sight. They will follow the smell of some yummy plant right into your yard. What you can do is plant some not so nice plants (to the deer) around the “good plants;” this will confuse the deer and help to deter them. At the point of entry to your yard, you can put up streamers or shiny things, (i.e., aluminum pie plates). Things that make a bit of noise or move sporadically will scare the deer. Something else to try is hang bars of soap on the trees to repel deer. Every time it rains, the smell will be stronger and work better. Deer will stay about three feet away from the soap. Dryer sheets (fabric softener sheets) will deter deer as well. Putting human hair in an old stocking and tying that in a tree will also work, however the hair needs to be replaced every two to three weeks. You can get hair from your local barber shop. Deer are creatures of habit, so all these things will work but they have to be moved around so the deer do not get too used to anything. Here are a few plants that deer and rabbits do not like: columbine, astilbe, bergenia, bleeding heart, blanket flower, lavender, peony, poppy, sage, thyme, and speedwell. These are just a few more common plants to try. Put these near and around the plants you want to protect. Try a few at the entrance to your yard as well. If you have fruit trees, make sure all of the fruit is picked up. All creatures look at the ripening fruit as a feast. The key to keeping deer out is to keep them guessing what is going on. Move things around, never let them get used to where and what things are. They are creatures of habit; they do not like change. Soon they will find your neighwww.thenewsyneighbour.com
bours garden easier to get to and more friendly. Ants These are very tough little fellows to get rid of. I spent an entire summer fighting with a group. They had decided to live right outside my front door in between the sidewalk slabs. Every day I had to step over them and I could not help but notice how much dirt they had pushed up every day. That summer I tried everything I could think of. I used the powder; at first I thought yippee they are gone! Only to realize before long they were back, and I think they were angry at me. Next I tried pouring hot water down their hill, also tried cayenne pepper. Nope – they kept coming! Ok, I was now losing my patience! I could not stand having to step over the ants on a daily basis. I even tried vinegar water and bleach, but I was a little more cautious with that. My efforts paid off. The ants and I fought all summer long and now I no longer have an ant problem. My neighbours have some ants that are bothering them last year; I cannot help but wonder! With ants, like deer, it is a matter of diligence. Keep working at it you will win! Maureen Macdonald

Dear Lifelines: I wonder why people are sometimes so cruel to people who are different or who have special needs. It seems shocking to me sometimes. Signed, In disbelief Dear Disbelief: It’s true that people’s behaviour can be entirely shocking sometimes. Often it’s difficult to find an adequate explanation for the individual on the receiving end of the teasing or cruel behaviour. Sometimes it helps to consider that the whole concept of disability or ‘otherness’ can be considered a term created to label all people that just don’t meet with the societal definition of ‘normal’. Just what is normal and how do we get it? Are there standards of normal? With all the many standardized tests from everything from intelligence to physical mobility, we are led to believe that there is a pre-defined definition of what normal is or should be. If someone falls outside of these standards, should they be considered less valuable or somehow flawed or defective? Who should have the right to dictate what normal is? It’s interesting to consider that the construction of normal in Western society is not necessarily the normal for other societies and cultures and groups. So who is right? If we tease and belittle those that are different from ourselves, what message are we sending to our children or to those around us? Perhaps we are instead saying more about ourselves than actually about the individual we are labelling and judging. Maybe we are illuminating our own limitations and perceptions. It is in this engagement with others that we are showing our intolerance for those that are different than us. In today’s Page 50
The Newsy Neighbour
society there are so many differences - with our different backgrounds, cultures, races, genders, worldviews, attitudes, talents and challenges. How can there possibly be a normal that shouldn’t rightly be challenged? With the great diversity of people in this country with various abilities, experiences and knowledge, we have wonderful opportunities to learn and develop our own perspectives. We might even explore outside our own limited interpretations of what we comfortably refer to as normal. It sounds like you are a great advocate and thanks for your note! Let’s hope more people start challenging those oppressive behaviours that you have pointed out. Awareness is a good beginning. Lifelines “If we are to achieve a richer culture, rich in contrasting values, we must recognize the whole gamut of human potentialities, and so weave a less arbitrary social fabric, one in which each diverse human gift will find a fitting place.” Margaret Mead

MY FAVOURITE – FABULOUS – FANTASTIC AND FUN STUFF Every month, I spend hours and hours on my computer doing research for the monthly articles for the magazine. I find some seriously fabulous and fantastic sites with some incredible information. This month my favourite stuff to share comes from a site called “Marc and Angel Hack Life.” Their site is all about sharing practical thoughts on a broad range of topics pertaining to life, productivity, aspirations, health, work, tech and general self improvement. Their site is www.marcandangel.com and definitely worth checking out. Here is a list of some of the articles – all very interesting and thought provoking. It never hurts to check new things out: 11 Easy Ways to Uncomplicate Your Life. 10 Ways Happy People Choose Happiness. 12 Things to Start Caring About Today. 12 Things Highly Productive People Do Differently. 10 Good Reminders for Stressful Times. 18 Ways to Inspire Everyone Around You. 12 Relationship Truths We Often Forget. 99 Tiny Stories to Make You Think, Smile and Cry (My Favorite). 20 Things to Start Doing in Your Relationship. 101 Simple Truths We Often Forget. 28 Ways to Stop Complicating Your Life. 30 Challenges for 30 Days of Growth . 30 Things to Start Doing for Yourself 30 Things to Stop Doing to Yourself. 95 Questions to Help You Find Meaning and Happiness. Since not everyone has a computer or access to one, I have included some of my favourite stuff from this site. • Today, I walked up to the door of my office (I’m a florist) at 7AM to find a uniformed Army soldier standing out front waiting. He was on his way to the airport to go to Afghanistan for a year. He said, “I usually bring home a bouquet of flowers for my wife every Friday and I don’t want to let her down when I’m away.” He then placed an order for 52 Friday afternoon deliveries of flowers to his wife’s office and asked me to schedule one for each week until he returns. I gave him a 50% discount because it made my day to see something so sweet. • Your friends are family you choose. So make sure you choose friends who are worthy of your time and attention. • Surround yourself with people who reflect the person you want to be. Choose friends who you are proud to know, people you admire, who love and respect you – people who make your day a little brighter simply by being in it. • Life is change. Every day is different. Every day is a new beginning and a new ending. Embrace it and make the best of it. • When you appreciate what you have, what you have appreciates in value. Kind of cool, right? So basically, being grateful for the goodness that is already evident in your life will bring you a deeper sense of happiness. And that’s without having to go out and buy anything. It makes sense. We’re going to have a hard time ever being happy if we aren’t thankful for what we already have. • A smile is a choice, not a miracle. Don’t wait for people to smile. Show them how. A genuine smile makes you and everyone around you feel better. The simple act of smiling sends a message to your brain that you’re happy. And when you’re happy, your body pumps out all kinds of feelgood endorphins. This reaction has been studied since the 1980’s and has been proven a number of times. Bottom line: Smiling actually makes you happier. Taking care of your body is crucial to being the happiest person you can be. If you don’t have your physical energy in good shape, then your mental energy (your focus), your emotional energy (your feelings), and your spiritual energy (your purpose) will all be negatively affected. Recent studies conducted on people who were clinically depressed showed that consistent exercise significantly raises happiness levels in the near-term. Not only that, six months later, the people who had continued to exercise were less likely to relapse into depression because they had a higher sense of self-accomplishment and self-worth. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Monthly Book Review by Derek Donais My review column is in its second year with the Newsy Neighbour. Please continue to join me each month as I explore a new read. I’ve had the opportunity to review worthwhile books by many local or regional Canadian authors, as well as some great international works. As always, my passions are fantasy and sciencefiction, but I am always on the lookout for more non-fiction, especially from local writers. I hope to build on the many bright spots and successes of 2011. MetalMagic: Talisman, the revised Canadian edition, was released in November, 2011 and I’m happy to announce that the sequel, MetalMagic: Revelation, should be available sometime in February, 2012. Thanks to all those who’ve supported the Newsy Neighbour and read my reviews over the last little while—and here’s to another year filled with promise! Yours in Truth, Derek Donais
The Hunger Games
Suzanne Collins Scholastic Press, October 2008 ISBN: 9780439023528
“The people begin to point at us eagerly as they recognize a tribute train rolling into the city. I step away from the window, sickened by their excitement, knowing they can’t wait to watch us die.”—Katniss Everdeen
I got caught up in the hype over the impending release of the movie and just had to read The Hunger Games. I’m happy to say it was a very engaging and entertaining book. The story centers on Katniss Everdeen and her difficult life spent in District 12, where hunger and hardship are part of daily life. Her district is one of twelve regions that compose the nation of Panem, the remnants of a ruined North America. After rebelling against the totalitarian rule of The Capitol, the districts were crushed and brought back into complete submission. This is where the story begins; as an annual penance and reminder of their total subservience, each district must send a boy and girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to compete in a nationally televised fight to the death. Though Katniss is an accomplished hunter and is at home in the wilds, she believes her participation in the games is a death sentence. She will be competing against other youths who are bigger, faster and stronger, raised in more wealthy and privileged districts—and who see the competition as a way to achieve fame and fortune for their home regions. Aside from the physical trials she is sure to encounter, Katniss must also consider the psychological demands she will face in a battle that can end with only one survivor. She enters the event with a complete disdain for The Capitol and this sadistic yearly ritual, torn between her need to return home and aid her family’s survival and her desire to make a statement against the Hunger Games. All of Katniss’s survival skills will be put to the test, as will her wits. Not only must she endure the threat of physical harm from her young opponents and the environment of the arena—which is evilly redesigned each year for the enjoyment of the viewing audience—but she must persevere through the greatest danger of all: her opposition to The Capitol. Only by winning over the very people she detests can she overcome the odds and survive. The book is well written, with a quick pace and excellent transitions from scene to scene. I don’t often get the chance to do so anymore, but I read nearly the entire book in one sitting—it’s that compelling. Even if you are not a fan of science fiction/ fantasy or adventure/thrillers, I think this book has a lot to offer. Not only is the plot sound and believable, but the character development is rich and really leaves you fully involved in the lives of the story’s inhabitants. If you’re like me and you’ve been meaning to read it, don’t wait any longer.

How to make moving easier on your kids When adults decide to move, it’s often to pursue an exciting opportunity or discover a new place. But for children, moving can be much harder to understand, as often they’ve only known one place as home. As you travel through adulthood, the unknown becomes more alluring, but it’s because you’ve been through major life changes before. That’s why it’s important to take some steps to make this major transition easier on your kids. Here are some tips from moving experts for helping your children adapt to a new place, along with some practical moving advice for families: * Open a line of honest communication. It can be hard to tell your kids that they’ll be moving, but making sure that they know they can talk about how they’re feeling about the move is important. Try to keep the conversation positive by telling them about all the fun things they’ll be able to do in their new home, but acknowledge that they’ll feel some sadness about leaving their old one. * Help them say goodbye. Organize a going-away party for your children and their friends, and work with the parents of their friends to gather contact information so they can keep in touch after you move. * Take inventory. Take a minute with each child to go through toys and clothes to see what can be donated. By letting them help with these decisions, you can eliminate any angst that might come if they realize something they wanted was left behind when you get to your new home. * Pack a first-day box. Have each child pack a box of things that they will want the first day you move into your new home, like favorite toys, books or stuffed animals. Have the movers pack these boxes last so they are the first thing that is unloaded when you arrive. If you are moving a long distance, have each child pack another bag with items to keep them entertained during the trip. * Form a moving team. Creating roles for your older children so they can help you move can make your move go quickly and smoothly. If possible, arrange for somebody to watch your younger children so you can focus on moving tasks. Hiring movers can also help take some of the pressure off you so you can tend to your children. Your younger children may also be thrilled by the chance to see the moving truck up close, so take the time to show them. * Help them feel at home. Showing your children new parks and other attractions in your new community will help them feel excited about their new home. Plan ahead to get them enrolled in activities with other children so they can quickly make new friends. However, be sure to explain to them that making new friends takes time, so they aren’t discouraged if it doesn’t happen for them right away. Communicate with their teachers to see if there’s anything special you can do to help your children feel more comfortable at school. By doing the little things to help your children cope with the tough parts of moving, you’ll put them in a position to acclimate themselves to their new home quickly and easily. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

As PROPERTY manager of single-family residences, I was showing a unit to prospective tenants and asking the usual questions: “Professionally employed?” “We’re a military family,” the wife answered. “Children?” “Yes, nine and twelve,” she told me proudly. “Animals?” “Oh, no,” she said earnestly. “They’re very well behaved.”
A broker was dismayed when a brand new real estate office much like his own opened up next door and erected a huge sign which read ‘BEST AGENTS.’ He was horrified when another competitor opened up on his right, and announced its arrival with an even larger sign, reading ‘LOWEST COMMISSIONS.’ The broker panicked, until he got an idea. He put the biggest sign of all over his own real estate office. It read: ‘MAIN ENTRANCE’ www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Spring has arrived.
Before you start planting you should improve your flower beds and make a plan. Is it a shade garden or a sun garden, dry or wet? Make sure you have enough topsoil ( 8-12 in) and then work in some fertilizer and compost / peat moss. Adding peat moss and compost helps retain water resulting in more impressive plants. Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary. ~ Steve Jobs
