I
I’ll come at you fast, like the Northern Bullet – Howard TJ Moon
Bonjour, and welcome to the second issue of ‘The Northern Bullet’. I wanted to say thanks to everyone for all the lovely feedback I got about the first one, I appreciate it a lot So, here’s another 27 pages of ramblings……
Sue E Side
Sue Steele (Or Sue E Side) is an artist originally from Glasgow who works and lives alongside/with members of The Mutoid Waste company, and other artists in an artist community, sometimes real, sometimes virtual. She us quite unique with her bold and striking style of art. She went to Glasgow School of Art when she was 17 – 18,she says she had known she wanted to go there since she was about 13.It was her dream. And she made that dream come alive and unleashed her beautiful art on the world!
She says "I call myself an artist but I'm really a bit of everything I don't really like to categorise because then it limits what you had. I love pottering and most of my art is made by tidying up and instead of binning it, I'll stick it together with something else...hey presto...art. Or as therapy! Nothing like a good painting session to keep you feeling positive. I also never like to say no to a challenge...so for instance if you're in the presence of a maser mosaic artist (Nek Chand) and he asks you if you want to mosaic a piece of his masterpiece....well of course I say YES (even though I've never mosaicked in my life!!). It's all a journey and it's my way of trying to make sense of things."
She says she has always been interested in creating. She didn't necessarily think it was art, just making do with what she had. She says at school art was where she fitted in, her art teacher paid a particular interest in her and encouraged her to develop any talents that she might've had. She had an overwhelming urge to please and succeed and she responded well to praise and encouragement. So, if it had been the H.E teacher she might've been a chef!! She says her biggest influence would have to be Bill Alston her teacher at secondary school teacher who started the ball rolling. Jimmy Robertson her tutor at GSA who told her.. to go for it!. She said "My main influences have been my friends and people I have lived with...the punk scene, travelling community...but mainly REAL people. I was and am still not one for galleries and polished art. I prefer things raw ,with emotion. I want to see and feel the struggle in people's work. Famousy artists...Niki di St Phalle,Jean Michel Basquiet......see! I STRUGGLE to think of them." Sue says art is like the biggest itch that needs to be scratched. I feel unfulfilled, down, purposeless if I'm not creating...Which does happen, and I always think the creativity is never going to come back...and it ALWAYS does...then I SPEW creativity, hard and fast till I'm spent...then it all stats again...It's a pattern I'm getting used to living with".
She currently lives on an artists site in Santarcangelo Italy called 'The Yard'. I went to the yard to stay with Sue once when i was 14. It was one of the most amazing places I’ve ever been. The whole place is like the set of a beautiful film. Covered in art – full of
massive sculptures, paintings and creations.
I asked Sue about living in The Yard and she said "The Yard works! It has been going for 22 years and has had some amazing talent pass through it's gates. The Mutoid motto is Mutate and survive and the Yard has certainly done that." She said what drew her to The Yard and Mutoid Waste was "The travelling scene and my disillusionment with it in Britain...the art scene and my disillusionment with that....forced me to look elsewhere. In the Mutoids I found a scene that incorporated the two. The anti conformist way of life and the excitement of combining that with art, which was open to everyone. The Yard just happened as a continuation of that...in a MUCH more mellow way. It was a route back into society.."
She recently worked with the company Happiness Is A $10 Tee and made a series of amazing t-shirts with her art work on them. "Again this just sort of happened my work suited their image at the time which was the punk/street look, unfortunately this season it seems to be palm trees and flowers...Mmmmm. Maybe in the future who knows...but my work doesn't follow fashion. I do it for me. If it fits in with a companies style fair enough but I don't go chasing them...hahahaha yet!"
When i asked her about her future projects and ideas she said: “I want to do a mural. A BIG one. I want to finish the mosaics I started in India, I want to make films. I want to sculpt....I want to do ceramics. I want to draw again I want to/need to master Photoshop etc etc. I have SO many things I want to do and skills I want to learn. However my latest is to turn my little caravan into a travelling cinema/space and to show the premier of a film that was made about the Yard, by Zimmerfrei in it at the Santarcangelo theatre festival. I'm also in the middle of preparing workshops for the summer and am in the middle of spewing out masses of paintings. probably to sit under my bed hahahaha.”I highly recommend you check out this wonderful woman’s work... https://www.facebook.com/sueside.co.uk http://www.sueside.co.uk/
Frank Turner.
The Ironworks, Inverness, December 11th 2012.
I was pretty excited about going to see Frank Turner after missing him so many times cause of snow, he did not let me down!! We arrived on a cold Decembers eve and walked through a corridor plastered with posters into the venue.....
The first support act Mark McCabe , a young Scottish singer songwriter from Aberdeen had already started to play, so i only saw a few of his songs. He as very good, but clearly very nervous. Never the less, he didn't let that stop him as he sang and joked with the audience about him growing a moustache for 'Movember'.
He left the stage encouraging us all to come and give him a hug after the gig.
After a lot of sound men sprinting up and down the stage with a manic look in their eyes, on walked the next support act 'Jim Lockey' of the band 'Jim Lockey and the Solemn Sun' He was defiantly more used to performing in front of crowds, he jumped about the stage as he sang enthusiastic country/folk punk songs. He was kind of a mixture between Frank and Mumford and Sons. He was really good live even though he was for some reason wearing jeans with a huge rip in the crotch for his whole set ...
After his set and some more frantic sound men, who seemed to all have long hair and beards, Frank strode on wearing a t-shirt that looked like it had been stuffed at the bottom of his bag for the whole tour – But he wore it with pride. I was quite surprised at the lack of people there for Frank actually considering he's headlined Wembley. There were only a couple of hundred people there (And quite a few of them just talked through his entire set) It didn't stop Mr. Turner from putting on a good show though, he played all my favourite songs and made sure there was a lot of audience participation from the part of the audience that was actually listening! He got us all to do air harmonica for 'I Still Believe' and 'Dan's Song' which was pretty good fun. He said he used to get someone up from the audience to play a real harmonica for those bits, but then he lost the harmonica. (So we had to do it Jack Black style.) He played a great mix of old and new songs. (Including one new song called 'If Ever I Stray' from the album he was touring 'England Keep My Bones' which I had never paid any attention to and now can't stop playing!) Despite the rubbish audience he played a very good gig and I would definitely go and see him again. Frank's new album 'Tape Deck Heart' is out now – I know, another one!!

Vegan Cream Eggs!!
• • • • • • •
170g (1/2 cup) light corn syrup (or golden syrup if you're across the pond) 58g (1/4 cup) butter, room temperature 375g (3 cups) confectioner's powdered sugar (icing sugar) 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/4 teaspoon salt yellow food coloring 1 (12 ounce) bag milk chocolate chips
1. You're going to be really astounded at how easy this is. Cream together the corn syrup, butter and vanilla. Sift in the confectioner's powdered sugar and beat until incorporated. Ok yeah, that was it.
Now to get fancy and separate the filling into whites and yolks! Take out about a third of the filling and stir in some yellow food coloring. Now you're done! Put the two bowls in the fridge, as they're easier to work with once they're set up a little. 2. This step is sticky! cold.
It helps to keep your hands clean and
Make little yolk balls out of the yellow mixture. Place them on some parchment (seriously, not foil like I did. It was a mess). Put them back in the fridge or even the freezer to firm up. These babies get soft fast! When the yolks are set up, you can start embedding them in the whites. Scoop an amount of white filling out and flatten it into a circle. Place the yolk ball inside, and wrap the white around it. Know what to do next? Stick it in the fridge.
3. Melt the chocolate in a double boiler or in short bursts in the microwave. Fill an egg mold with the chocolate and swirl to coat the sides. Once the molds are set, plop a filling ball into half of each mold. Using more melted chocolate, join the two halves of the egg together. Let set and demold.
The freezer does wonders for this step.
In The Spotlight: Brain Curran
Brain Curran is an acoustic punk singer/song writer/guitarist/genius who has spent most of his life in DIY punk bands.(Quarantine, Disaffect, Ruin, Debris and others) But he's gone solo acoustic now and has been giging like that for a few years playing with people like Billy Liar and Mark Ayling. He is very energetic and passionate on stage and off. He writes totally brilliant songs and in-between songs he's almost like a stand up comedian! He says he's influenced by Chuck Ragan, Crass, AC/DC and Bob Mould. He is currently recording a debut LP which will be available July 2013 and preparing a second European tour sometime in September 2013. If you see that he's playing anywhere near you (Which he most likely will be :D) then I highly recommend going to see him!!

Alkaline Trio – Album Review
I've only just worked up the courage to listen to Alkaline Trio's newest album 'My Shame Is True'. A mixture between the cheesy name and being scared that one of my favourite bands were going down hill - after 'This Addiction' only having a few good songs on it – had put me off at first. Now I've listened to it i wish i hadn't waited! From the first song onwards it's bursting with pop-punk anthems that i feel like i know already. I liked the first half of the album in particular, the first song 'She Lied To The FBI' brings back memories of very early Trio songs, 'I Wanna Be A Warhol' reminded me a lot of 'Crimson' and 'I'm Only Here To Disappoint' definitely wouldn't be out of place on their joyously sing along album 'Agony and Irony'. I was very impressed with the album and can't wait to go and see them this year!! They really did not disappoint – despite the song. :)
Bold songs are my top 5.
1. She Lied To The FBI 2. I Wanna Be A Warhol 3.I’m Only Here To Disappoint 4. Kiss You To Death 5. The Temptation Of St. Anthony 6. I, Pessimist 7. Only Love 8. The Torture Doctor 9. Midnight Blue 10. One Last Dance 11. Young Lovers 12. Until Death Do Us Part
