Ken Houlder
November 14, 1936 November 15, 2017 It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our father, Ken Houlder, on November 15, 2017 in the Peace River hospital. Kenneth Cyril Charles Houlder was born November 14, 1936 to Cyril (Spruce) and Hazel Houlder (Brong) of Griffin Creek, Alberta. Ken was born in Berwyn and raised on the farm in Griffin Creek. He loved all aspects of farm life. He left the farm at age 16 to attend Fairview College, where he earned a diploma in Agriculture. He worked off the farm after college, hauling water and as a rig hand. For several winters, he worked for Vern Estabrook,

The brothers formed Houlder Automotive, a General Motors car dealership, in 1971. The calling of the farm came again, when they became the local Sperry New Holland and Versatile tractor dealer. Ken and Bud sold the GM dealership to friend and partner Ernie Haas, to focus on the farm business. They also expanded into the construction world, with crawlers and trac hoes, forming Houlder Construction. During this time, a hobby farm became another full time job, with land around Grimshaw, as well as in the Dixonville area.

In lieu of flowers donations and expressions of sympathy, a donation to the “Grimshaw/Berwyn District Long Term Care Residents Council” (Box 648, Grimshaw) in Ken’s memory would be appreciated.
Ken enjoyed his family; travelling with his children and granddaughters to places like Disneyland and and Hawaii. Ken also enjoyed many fishing trips to Bistcho Lake with Troy and others. It became an annual event, one that Ken really looked forward to. In 2012, Houlder Farm Supply was sold to Rocky Mountain Equipment, and Ken retired. A lifetime of long hours and hard work had taken their toll on his health. His wife, Edna, passed away suddenly in 2015. Ken struggled through the last few years with his health, although he enjoyed the summer of 2017 with many outings with the other residents and staff of Grimshaw Long Term Care. Ken touched many lives and hearts in the community - with the greeting of “Hi Little Buddy”. He will be missed. Ken leaves to mourn his daughter Kimberly Ann of Grande Prairie, his son Kenneth Troy and his wife Aleeta Ploc of Grimshaw and his treasured grand-daughters Kieryn Victoria of Grimshaw and Shaelyn Kenna of Camrose. He also leaves his brother Harold (Bud), wife Anne and his family, his sister-in-law Joan Houlder of Thunder Bay, Ontario and her family, his sisterin-law Helen Ryan and son, his brother-in-law Ed Coates of Lethbridge, AB and his family. He was predeceased by wife Edna (2015), his parents Cyril and Hazel, his brother Bill, his in-

New Holland Command Tractor wins machine of the year award The New Holland T6.175 Dynamic CommandTM tractor was crowned “Machine of the Year” 2018 in the Mid Class Tractor category at the Agritechnica trade show in Hanover, Germany this week. The machine received the coveted award for its technical innovation and the benefits it brings to customers, with selection criteria focusing on innovative features, performance, productivity, cost of operation, ease of use and operator comfort. Carlo Lambro, New Holland Agriculture Brand President, stated: “This award is testament to New Holland’s long-standing leadership of the mixed farming and dairy segment. It is a well-deserved recogni-
tion of the hard work and dedication of all those involved in the development of the T6.175 Dynamic Command tractor, who worked tirelessly to produce a tractor that meets the specific requests of our customers.” In August 2017, New Holland announced it is expanding its acclaimed T6 Series offering with the new T6 Dynamic CommandTM option. These new T6.145, T6.155, T6.165 and T6.175 are the only tractors in the segment featuring a 24x24 semi powershift transmission on the market. They are extraordinarily versatile tractors that will be an asset to the fleets of dairy, livestock, and hay and forage operations.

How much debt should finance your farm’s assets? FCC’s Outlook for farm assets and debt 2017-18 provided a picture of the overall financial health of Canadian agriculture using Statistic Canada’s Balance Sheet of Agriculture. Industry financial ratios are indicative of trends, but do not reflect any one operation and are of limited use for benchmarking purposes. Collaboration between Statistics Canada, FCC and a research analyst leveraged the 2015 Farm Financial Survey (FFS) to paint a more detailed picture of the financial health of Canadian agricultural operations. This post is the last installment of a blog series to help put your farm financials into a larger context and make sense of key financial tools. Following the overviews of liquidity and debt-service positions of Canadian farms, I examine the degree of leverage in Canadian agriculture, as measured by the debt-to-equity (DE). I find Canadian agriculture operations to be overall financially healthy. The DE ratio is computed as: Debt-to-equity (DE)= Total liabilities / (Total Assets- Total Liabilities) It compares the debt used to finance assets and growth relative to the equity in those assets. A higher DE ratio means larger interest payments and thus higher financial risk. A higher DE ratio is not always problematic if the operation can generate a higher rate of return on equity than the cost of the debt. How does Canadian farm debt-toequity measure up? Canada’s farms showed a supportive degree of leverage in 2015, with an average DE ratio of
0.21. DE ratios varied across the sectors (see the chart below). Grains and oilseeds and beef are sectors with the lowest debtto-equity positions. Recent appreciation in farmland values explain the low financial risk in the grains and oilseed sectors. More than 8 in 10 beef producers had a DE ratio of less
than 0.3. Prudent debt management and a rebounding market for beef allowed cattle producers to build stronger equity positions. The sectors with relatively more assets financed by debt include dairy, potatoes, and hogs. About onequarter of all dairy producers had a DE ratio of between 0.4
and 1. More stable cash flows in industries like dairy tend to result in higher liabilities. Dairy may even show healthier DE ratios in 2017 given the recent quota expansion. Debt-toequity positions of hog and potato producers are likely to have improved in the last couple of years relative to 2015.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency last week made changes to its Manual of Procedures, which will allow pork packers to apply health mark labels after pork has been frozen, the council said. The previous provision, which required such labels to be applied to boxes before the product was eligible to be exported, has until now “effectively prevented the industry from benefiting” from the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) in place between Canada and the EU, the pork council said. For export to the European Union, Canadian pork must undergo a cold treatment, which usually takes place in a cold storage facility, Ron Davidson, the Canadian Meat Council’s director for international trade, explained last month on the pork industry program Farmscape. The pork industry, he said, “needs to be able to apply that health label to the boxes in the cold storage, because all of the production that’s eligible for the EU won’t actually be sold to the EU. “We’ll only be selling certain cuts from each carcass, so it’s very important that we apply the EU health label only to the boxes that are going to Europe, not to those that will be going someplace else.”
CANOLA
“The elimination of this barrier enables increased sales, which is of utmost importance to a prosperous pork sector,” council chair Rick Bergmann, a Steinbach, Man. hog producer, said in a release Friday. . — AGCanada.com Network

The Dawson Co-operative Union has acquired Rolla Agricultural Services adding a new branch to the Dawson Co-op Family. “We are extremely excited to be part of this incredible opportunity. Both of our businesses are a natural fit as we have down to earth family values and an engaging community spirit. With the synergies we can develop working together we will be able to serve our new and existing customers and members for years to come.” said Rod Hillary, Dawson Co-op General Manager. Rolla Ag’s crop input location offers customers custom granular fertilizer blending, anhydrous ammonia, seed and crop supplies. Rolla Ag has been in the community since 1993, providing excellent service to its valued customers. “I am thankful that the future of Rolla Agricultural Services will remain in the community. Finding the perfect match in the Dawson Co-op ensures that the values of Rolla Ag will continue.” said Brandon Funk, President, Rolla Ag Services Ltd. The crop input location officially became part of the Dawson Co-op on November 15, 2017. Dawson Coop is working with Rolla Ag Services Limited to ensure that the transition is smooth for both the Co-op and Rolla Ag Services Limited customers. “I’m very pleased that Brandon will continue to manage the agricultural operations in Rolla. I believe that he will be a strong addition to our senior leadership team at the Dawson Co-op.” said Rod Hillary, Dawson Co-op General Manager. This addition brings even more to Dawson Co-op’s already strong offering to farm customers, which includes the Home and Agro Centre and Food Store in Dawson Creek, as well as three petroleum cardlock locations in Chetwynd, Tumbler Ridge and Dawson Creek. It is also a sign of how the network of services and support is expanding for Co-op customers across Western Canada. In September, Federated Co-operatives Limited also opened two new fertilizer terminals so that it could better distribute fertilizer to local co-ops and their farm customers. Teach a horse to think in all situations Are we strengthening or weakening the natural impulse of our horses? Horses prefer to take flight when anxious, worried, bothered, and/or confused. If they can’t take flight they will fight. A horse only has one brain. We all realize this, but what does that really mean? Many people feel that if a horse has a problem area, they can just step around it, leave it, or avoid it and it won’t be a problem. Whatever we teach that brain is something the horse will use as a go to reaction whenever needed. If we teach a horse to think in all situations, that’s what they will do. If we leave them reacting to a certain situation or situations and then avoid those situations because of the way the horse reacted; then reacting instead of thinking will be or can become the horse’s go to behavior. This reacting can show up when something new comes along as well as whatever they were reacting to earlier. This will not serve them or us well. I describe a thinking horse as one that is calm and thinks. For example, the horse steps slowly out of the trailer rather than rushing out backwards or calmly accepts a back cinch rather than bucks at the feel of one. They calmly think their way through things rather than panicking, bolting, pulling back, spooking and so on. All too often trainers or owners don’t know how to fix a problem. Even if it’s one they have created. Then often the plan they come up with is, he doesn’t like this or that so I just won’t do it. The only way they know there is a problem is because they have seen it happen. So they avoid the problem. Let me try to give an example. “Let’s say a horse bucks if they use a back cinch” or “their horse will get upset if they ask it to canter.” So, hopefully the trainer or owner won’t, but often says; “let’s just not use a back cinch anymore or ask them to canter anymore.” The horse has learned to react in a situation and now everyone is avoiding that situation. So the horse has learned or has been taught (whatever you want to call it) that reacting is an option if they feel the need.
As I mentioned earlier, the owner or trainer wouldn’t know there was a problem unless they had tried something a time or two or many, then given up because the reaction was getting worse. If this happens, then the horse has learned/been taught that the bad behavior can be used at a later date for any type of situation because it works. Examples could be bucking, bolting or kicking. The horse’s natural instinct to flight or fight has been strengthened instead of weakened. The opposite would happen if the cowboy/ cowgirl is handy enough, reads the horse and uses the right feel and timing for the problem they are having. The issue would become less and in this scenario the horse gets taught to use the one brain it has to think. Let’s say the horse is relatively good with things, but you “can’t” use a back cinch because the time/times you tried in the past, the horse ran off or bucked out of the pressure or feel of the back cinch. If left that way the horse knows there is always the option of acting out if something they don’t like or understand happens in the future. This behavior is not just limited to the back cinch. As a trainer and teacher, I really don’t give myself the luxury of saying this horse doesn’t like this or that. For me, it is just another way of blaming the horse and giving myself an excuse for not having the skill, ability or understanding to get the job done. If I don’t give myself that option, then I have to figure it out, improve, and learn so I can get it done. I’ve dealt with plenty of horses over the years that I didn’t think I was going to be able to make a change in. But because I didn’t give myself the option, I had to think harder, stay with it longer, ask myself more questions and question every move I made until I could make the change(s) I wanted. Be wary of allowing yourself and others to avoid, make excuses and teach horses to react and strengthen their natural instincts. I believe it is my responsibility as a horse owner to give them all that they deserve and more. In the end
I’m the one that benefits the most for learning what I need to do to be able to help the horse become more with my help, rather than less, because of me. Prebiotics and probiotics for pets: What’s the scoop? By Dr. Mira Kelada Prebiotics and probiotics are all the rage in human nutrition these days and it is hard to avoid buying a yoghurt at the grocery store that doesn’t have a claim to promoting good intestinal health. But what are probiotics and prebiotics? And can they be good for pets? According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and World Health Organization (WHO), probiotics are “living microorganisms which, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit to the host.” Prebiotics are “non-digestible food ingredients that selectively stimulate the growth and activities of specific bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract and exert beneficial effects on the host.” Simply, probiotics are bacteria that improve intestinal tract health and prebiotics are substances that improve the health of the bacteria in the intestinal tract. Research has shown that there are as many bacteria in our intestinal tracts as there are cells in our entire bodies. And we are only just beginning to understand the impact that this living ‘community’ has on our health. We know that beneficial bacteria in our intestines promote digestion and help to prevent pathogenic (or “bad”) bacteria from becoming
the main inhabitants. Early research is showing that both probiotics and prebiotics can help good bacteria grow in the gut and this has a positive impact on health for humans as well as dogs and cats. Prebiotics are typically a kind of carbohydrate (usually oligosaccharides) that undergoes fermentation in the colon to provide nourishment to bacteria. These oligosaccharides are not easily digestible by mammals but can be digested by bacteria. Some of the products of digestion can improve the health of the colon lining and help ensure that beneficial bacterial proliferate over bad bacteria. Where prebiotics support the growth of beneficial bacteria and suppress the growth of pathogenic bacteria, probiotics actually introduce good bacteria in to the intestinal tract. Probiotics increase the counts of good bacteria in the intestinal system. By encouraging the growth of good bacteria, bad bacteria are not given a chance to take-over, a concept called “competitive exclusion.” Probiotics are very hard to introduce into the system as bacteria have to survive the very acidic stomach to make it alive to the remainder of the intestinal tract. Though many yogurts do contain beneficial bacteria, they rarely make it to the intestinal tracts of dogs and cats. For this
reason, veterinarians prefer to use prebiotic and probiotic products that have been tested and evaluated in domestic animals. Prebiotics are generally good on a long term basis whereas probiotics are useful on an as needed basis. For example, if a dog was having a transient diarrhea from a mild gastrointestinal upset, probiotics would be very useful. Some probiotics have been shown to shorten the time of resolution of spontaneous diarrhea compared to no treatment. Prebiotics would be useful on an ongoing basis for pets to maintain their gastrointestinal health and are often included in veterinary formulated pet diets. Additionally, we are learning the probiotics might be helpful for pets to recover from a bacterial imbalance in their intestinal tract following antibiotic administration. It is important to know that not all probiotics and prebiotics are made equal. A study completed by a veterinary researcher showed that few commercial dog and cat probiotics contained the therapeutic amount of probiotics that they advertised. If you want the most up to date information about prebiotics and probiotics, do talk to your veterinarian about the different products that are available and which ones have research behind them to show clinical efficacy. Research is still ongoing and veterinarians and veterinary staff are continuously learning about prebiotics and probiotics and their effects on intestinal health.

Chicken producers solidify Canadian-raised brand Farmers and consumers had a hand in the expansion of Chicken Farmers of Canada’s Canadianraised chicken brand. CFC spokesperson Lisa BishopSpencer says consumers wanted to know what the brand name means, “apart from the fact that it’s Canadian.” Launched earlier this fall, the expanded brand means farmers adhere to the national, mandatory on-farm food safety and animal care programs, and are committed to sustainable production in addition to the chicken being raised in Canada. The brand now means “farmers are committed to these three things on top of everything else,” BishopSpencer says. CFC has a program to ensure the chicken sold using the logo “is what we say it is,” she notes. Responding to consumers The brand was first developed because “consumers wanted to support Canadian product.” Furthermore, consumers wanted the assurance that the chicken they were buying is produced in Canada, by Canadian farmers, and wanted it to reflect as coming from a farmers’ group, rather than processors, re-
tailers or restaurants. With the expanded brand, CFC is responding to Canadians’ expectations of chicken farmers to have high standards, to follow them and “then prove that we’re doing it,” she notes. The original Raised by a Canadian Farmer brand and logo was first launched almost three years ago to signify the chicken bearing it is produced in Canada. It’s now being used in 23 different grocery retailer and restaurant locations, including Walmart, Sobeys and Swiss Chalet. The circular Raised by a Canadian Farmer logo features the brand name underneath a chicken in the centre of the circle, sporting a maple leaf on it. The expanded brand uses the same logo. Farmers welcome change British Columbia chicken farmer Derek Janzen says it’s a great idea to roll the animal care, on-farm food safety and sustainable production programs into the brand. “For the consumer to see the Raised by a Canadian Farmer, it will mean to them that we have mandatory food safety, and we’re taking care of our animals with the animal care program,” says Janzen, who raises 780,000 birds a year.

The trained dog versus a new pup There are some considerations to think about before deciding whether to start a pup or purchase a trained dog. Your personal goals and time that can be committed to working with a dog should be carefully analyzed before deciding.
Everyone has a different tone and volume to their voice, often a certain tone carries a wealth of meaning so a few work sessions with the trainer will keep the new handler and dog growing in the right direction. Without some assistance – a lot of training will be lost.
A trained dog will require a few initial working sessions between the trainer and new owner as everyone trains and works a bit different. It is important to learn what the dog knows and how to communicate with the dog so they understand being asked in a bit of a different want.
A pup can be fun to train if you have the time, patience and like a daily challenge. There are many hours invested in a pup before he is capable of being responsible enough to do a job in an efficient and orderly manner. It also takes a firm commitment to getting help on a regular basis so they handler can learn while teaching the pup. If you have worked a trained dog prior to getting a pup, it will make working the pup easier as you already have a working knowledge base. Whatever route you decide to go, there will be a necessary time commitment. A trained dog will take less time to learn to work than starting with a pup as training one will little prior knowledge is a long term project. Be sure to be objective about your decision before purchases. Carol Nelson 250-772-5315

Staying on top of a cattle herd is a 24-hour a day task, especially in areas where predators are frequently on the prowl with an appetite for livestock. One of the most prominent areas of the country known for having to deal with predators is Alberta, where the Rocky Mountains meet the prairies. Mark Boyce, professor of ecology at the University of Alberta, spends an extended amount of time studying, tracking and analysing the behaviours of these animals. Predators on the prowl He says the predators which give the farmers the most grief are wolves. “The No. 1 predator on cattle is the wolf,” Boyce says. “The number of wolf depredation cases and the cost of those claims has been increasing year after year for the last decade, there’s been a substantial increase.” He says grizzly bears and cougars also are known to cause problems. Morrie Goetjen, who ranches near Cremona, says it’s common to see grizzly bears and cougars in the area. “If you live out here, there’s nobody out here who doesn’t have a
grizzly or cougar story,” Goetjen says. Goetjen says one of those stories, which is being talked about by many ranchers this year, involves larger prey. “A very large grizzly in the Horse Creek area took a three-year old bull, now I don’t know if the bull was lame or what its status was, but a three-year old bull is a big animal.” Stepping up defences Goetjen says predators such as grizzly bears, cougars and wolves are hard to defend against. However, he does believe patrolling livestock can help mitigate losses. Boyce says there are a few things you can do to protect your herd, including putting orange flagging on fences. “That will spook wolves for a little bit, it’s not a long-term solution, but especially during a critical period like calving, you want to do everything you can to keep the wolves away,” Boyce says. Bottom line Boyce says dogs can help protect livestock from most predators, while orange flagging, and electric fencing can help keep grizzly bears away. Article by: Craig Lester

Feed barley versus U.S. corn Competitively priced U.S. corn is entering southern Alberta as a feed ration substitute for higher priced feed barley. Growers appear to be storing a sizeable quantity of unpriced barley in the hope of accessing the malt market Prairie feed barley cash bids edged higher through the harvest season on reduced crop size
ideas, but prices have stumbled a bit lately. Feed barley cash bids in southern Alberta eased slightly from recent highs. Lethbridge-area cattle feeders reported at $210 per tonne ($4.60 per bushel). Strathmore-area feeders are $200 to $205 per tonne. Prices for feed barley in Saskatchewan are quoted at $3.30 to $3.65 per bushel.

Competitively-priced American corn is now entering southern Alberta as a feed ration substitute for higher priced feed barley. Hotter energy corn recently landed at $215 per tonne Lethbridge track. Growers appear to be storing a sizeable quantity of unpriced barley in the hope of accessing the malt market. Supplies of malt quality barley this year could be as high as four million tonnes out of a total crop of 7.5 million. Unfortunately, total industry malt barley requirements amount to only about 2.25 million tonnes annually, with remaining malt supply eventually going back into domestic feed channels, likely during the second half of the 2017-2018 marketing year. Looking at the United States corn market, at 14.28 billion bushels, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s October forecast of 2017 corn production was 96 million bushels larger than their September forecast. The 2017-2018 marketing year consumption forecast increased by 35 million bushels in the latest USDA report to 14.29 billion bushels.

Strive for consistency when feeding cattle Nutrition with John McKinnon Striving for consistency may not sound like the most exciting goal, but when it comes to feeding cattle, it should be one of our golden rules! Consistency is essential if we want to keep cattle on an even keel and prevent wild swings in intake. This includes consistency in when we feed; how
we load, mix and deliver rations; in how cattle are brought onto feed and how ration changes are made. It is a simple fact that cattle are subject to going off feed. This is due in large part to the nature of the ruminant’s digestive system. The rumen is the primary organ responsible for feed digestion. Feeds are fermented in the rumen by the activity
of bacteria, protozoa and fungi. The makeup of this microbial community is dependent in large part upon the nature of the diet. For example, when cattle are on high-forage diets, the rumen bacterial community is very efficient at digesting fibrous feeds. When the diet is primarily grain, the rumen bacteria population shifts to organisms
responsible for digesting starch. If dietary changes are carried out gradually, as in the case of feedlots that utilize step-up feeding programs, the shift in the rumen microbial population is gradual with little effect on the animal. Issues arise when this dietary shift is too rapid, or when there are disruptions in feed delivery (i.e. diets are changed too
quickly, missed feedings, wrong diet fed, etc.). Such abrupt changes cause disruptions in the rumen microbial population, the rumen becomes more acidic (low rumen pH), the animal goes off feed. In serious cases we see animals suffering from sub-acute or acute acidosis (dehydration, loose manure, lame animals). If one looks at suc-
cessful commercial feeding programs, they are not only designed to meet nutrient requirements, but also contain a core set of management principles designed to minimize digestive upsets and optimize feed efficiency. As this year’s feeding season is starting, it is a good time to review some of these core management components.

Scores of cattle producers will need to offset the impacts of this year’s poor pasture conditions and feed shortages in parts of the Prairies. Alberta Agriculture recently reported poor pasture conditions in many parts of the province, while Saskatchewan Agriculture disclosed inadequate winter feed supplies and likely shortages in southern regions. More severe in southern areas, Prairie dryness reduced pasture production and available biomass, resulting in lower quality, higher fibre forages for grazing, according to Western Beef Development Centre’s Bart Lardner. Feed testing recommended He suggests farmers feed test to determine nutrient deficiencies as well as the nutritive values of all available winter feedstuffs, and then source necessary supplements. “It may be pelleted supplements, DDGS (distiller’s dried grains with solubles), grain screenings, mixed hay, etc.” Thin cows Alberta Agriculture’s beef and forage specialist Barry Yaremcio notes thin cows require more feed to keep warm in winter. A cow 200 pounds below ad-
equate weight will require 1,400 pounds more hay to stay warm. That added expense can be avoided with late fall feeding management. Options “This is typically the time when guys start moving to swath grazing,” Yaremcio says. Cattle grazing hay fields in which farmers didn’t take a second or third cut of hay is another option. Grazing whole plant corn is a system that’s gained adoption in the last five to eight years in western Canada, Lardner adds. Corn exceeds the nutrient requirements of a beef cow in her first and second trimester of pregnancy, but it’s not without risks. Cattle will pick out corn’s tastier part, the cob, which is starch heavy, and could cause grain overload issues. Calves and cows Yaremcio also recommends weaning calves over 150 days old, explaining they can do just as well or better on a hay-grain ration. In turn, the nutrient requirements of the calves’ mothers will fall 25 per cent. Article by: Richard Kamchen

Not all Disability Tax credit companies are created equal
Today we are going to do a comparison of two companies that offer help to get your disability tax credit from Revenue Canada approved. Through a good friend and colleague of ours, my husband and I recently found out that he qualified for the Medical Disability Credit from Revenue Canada. (I can’t believe that through all of the years working with Chartered Accountants not one of them determined that he should apply, but that’s a whole different story.) Our friends went through True North Disability Services, they charge 20% of whatever you get for a refund cheque from the government. We went with Disability Credit Canada at 25%. Now the gal I dealt with there, Rose, explained that while their fees were a wee bit higher than True North’s, we would get the best and most personal service. Wow, that was one expensive decision that burned us badly in at least two ways. Poor customer service and a $1,300 hit on the refund. The customer service with Disability Credit Canada was anything but good. In fact, they kept spelling my husband’s name Marc instead of Mark or calling him Michael, I had to get darned right pissy about it before they finally got it fixed. I was Mary, not Marie. They failed to communicate with us the way we were promised they would. I in fact have emails that Rose never responded to. Just totally ignored, which is why I ended up having to call them all the time. Now our friends applied two weeks before we did. We both got letters from Revenue Canada that we were approved on the exact same day. The difference is that they knew they were approved about 10 days before we did, because True North called them and told them so. Our friends got their cheques, both husband and wife in September. We are still waiting on ours. For only my husband. He is the only one who applied. We got told by Disability Credit Canada that hubby’s cheque would be direct deposited to his account on November 14th, but my husband does not have direct deposit set up with Revenue Canada and therefore, after three
days of looking for a cheque they said would come and hadn’t I emailed them again and got told sorry, it will be mailed on the 14th. Oh and we already have their invoice, not just by email but by regular post as well. I bitterly complained about the service throughout the entire process but the answers were always to blame Revenue Canada. What I have learned: If your doctor fills out the forms properly, and uses the words that Revenue Canada likes and your disability hampers your day to day life, you can qualify, often on your own. Disability Credit Canada would have you believe that they are there to help you and to a degree they are I guess, they do check on the file periodically, especially if YOU take the time out of your day to question them as to the state of your application but beyond that they truly do nothing. The only benefit to working with a tax recovery company from my perspective I guess was that it is one less thing that you do not have to think about, at least if you work with the right company, which my hubby and I were clearly not. “You get what you pay for” is NOT ALWAYS A TRUE STATEMENT! They got a phone call/email every couple of weeks just touching base, they got told when their claim was approved before the government told them. Not us. We found out from the government first that we were approved and later got the call from Disability Credit Canada. There was nothing about the service we got from Disability Credit Canada at 25% that was any better than True North’s at 20%, in fact, right across the board Disability Credit Canada was hands down WORSE in the customer service department. If you aren’t patient enough or confident enough to do the paperwork yourself, then based on my knowledge and experience I would recommend you use True North Disability Services. If you are going to give up some of your money that is meant to support you to a company to do the work for you, PLEASE pass by Disability Credit Canada and go straight the the cheaper,
more effective and communicative True North Disability Services. In my personal humble opinion, Disability Credit Canada is there not to help you but instead they are there to take advantage of you and your disability by charging 5% more for lesser quality service. They could care less about helping you except for that first 14 days. Once they get through the period when you are able to cancel your contract - forget any kind of customer service quality. The upper management is rude, dismissive and condescending. They only want to get that 25% and in the case of my husband who was approved for 10 back years of an illness that has had him taking daily injections, going through tests, taking crap like prednisone, experiencing things like paralysis etc....that 25% was just under $6,000 as opposed to $4,700 at 20%. And $1,300, well, that’s a lot of money to pay for such poor service. Like I said, BUYER BEWARE - I am turning in a complaint on this company, Disability Credit Canada into the Better Business Bureau and I am going to write the CRA because trying to talk to the company about their lack of promised service is like talking to a closed door in a house that has no one living there. It has been our experience that Disability Tax Credit Canada doesn’t ADVOCATE for the disabled the way they claim. As a matter of fact, based on our our experience I would say they RIP THE DISABLED OFF. They will treat you really nice just long enough to get you through that 14 day cancellation period and then their service becomes NON existent. THAT WAS OUR EXPERIENCE. The Canadian Personal Finances Blog also speaks knowledgabley about these kinds of companies and that it is easier to file on your own than you think: https://www.canajunfinances. com/2014/03/26/disability-tax-credit-pleasedo-it-yourself/

Country acts Kissel, Smith send DC some feedback
Somewhere amidst early tunes Side Effects and Wastin’ Gas, a scuffle broke out during the opening of the Dallas Smith concert in Dawson Creek Tuesday. It didn’t go unnoticed by the Smith onstage. “We’ve already had one scrap,” he said at the mic early on. Matters progressed from the real world to online, as after the concert wrapped Smith took to Twitter to elaborate. “Tonight I got to watch girls and guys punching, pulling hair, groping girls,” he said. Some were glad Smith called people out. “People need to realize that some fans are kids. I’m bringing my 13 year old Friday. It’s not a bar, it’s an all ages event. Be respectful of the other concert goers and the performers,” noted onr. “Sad that some fans went and ruined it for others. A concert is suppose to be a fun place for everyone to enjoy themselves,” said Jessica Cameron. “Disgusting Dawson Creek. Most fans were great. Others ruined it. Grow the (expletive deleted) up,” tweeted Smith. Others didn’t understand why Smith lumped all of Dawson Creek together, one noting this morning it would be akin to lumping Smith’s former band Default in with Nickelback, and then calling Dallas Smith ‘Countrified Chad Kroeger light’. Another didn’t understand why all of Dawson Creek got the shout out from Smith. “So if most of the fans were
great. Why would you call our whole city disgusting?” One Twitter user, Cody Moulds, put it back on Smith completely. “It’s because your music is dog (expletive).” Kissel responds Later in the week. Brett Kissel weighed in. “Dear Dawson Creek: Your city is great,” tweeted Kissel late Wednesday. Smith noted with his original tweet he was in fact “standing up to the groping.” “Dear Brett Kissel fans: I was standing up to the groping, sucker punches and assaults on concert goers. This says a lot about Brett’s character. Nice to see its finally coming to light. Brett: Didn’t you just play @WeMovement? (Expletive deleted) act like it. It’s not all about social #’s,” said Smith.” Late Wednesday Kissel admitted the matter may have been blow up in proportion. “I will admit - that it is sad how (his)original words and now my reply have been misinterpreted to a degree by so many.” As of press time, Dean Brody, Aaron Pritchett, Johnny Reid, Chad Brownlee, Gord Bamford, Paul Brandt, nor George Canyon have released recent statements or social media thoughts about Dawson Creek. editor@dcdn.ca

New papers connect agri-food value chain to rural development The value chain that serves and includes primary producers must be strong if the sector as a whole is to succeed. With that in mind, the Rural Ontario Institute has produced a collection it calls the Rural Ontario Foresight Papers. They explore particular topics that reflect the challenges and opportunities for rural and northern Ontario. The papers, written by expert authors, cover place-specific policy, the impact of megatrends on rural development, broadband infrastructure, rural business succession, volunteerism and the visitor economy, which is about drawing visitors to rural amenities. The papers look towards directions various stakeholders, governments or non-profits might follow to foster rural development, in light of the trends and opportunities the authors foresee. The institute chose the topics based on consultations with its stakeholders, which include farmers.
Basic rural framework required “Farmers need a basic rural framework in place so they have schools their kids can attend, a workforce to draw from and other necessities that serve the agri-food value chain,” says Norman Ragetlie, the institute’s director of policy and stakeholder engagement. One paper by author David Freshwater, called Growth Beyond Cities: Place-Based Rural Development Policy in Ontario, has caught the attention of the Ontario Federation of Agriculture. In the paper, Freshwater notes the sheer size and diversity of rural Ontario means that for any policy to be effective, the province has to deal with various rural circumstances in different ways. Economic development benefits for all So called one-size-fits-all policies are no longer effective, he says. Rather, clear economic development opportunities exist in rural Ontario that could benefit both the people living in these

areas and the province collectively. “To realize these opportunities will require the introduction of a policy framework that supports local rural development initiatives,” Freshwater says, adding that in this regard, Ontario is similar to other countries in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development where there are similar ongoing challenges in identifying appropriate policies to support rural growth. Another paper about broadband infrastructure, by Catherine Middleton, argues that modern agribusiness needs access to high-speed Internet, just like urban businesses do. The same goes for on-farm businesses, which are disadvantaged because of slow Internet speed and spotty coverage. Likewise, farmers engaged in innovative production approaches - precision agriculture and advanced data aggregation, for example - require better bandwidth than most of them have access to now. Two other papers are particularly pertinent to farmers. Rural succession plans needed In one paper, Rural Business Succession: Innovation Opportunities to Revitalize Local Communities, author Paul Chamberlain notes how many rural businesses do not have succession plans. If they simply close down their operations once the owners retire, there’ll be a void in the farm community that depends on them. And in the paper “The Visitor Economy and Rural Cultural Amenities” author Christopher Fullerton notes the growing interest in rural tourism experiences based on agriculture such as food trails, farmers’ markets, on-farm bed and breakfasts and culinary tourism. These activities have flourished and become a cultural phenomenon, but they’ll require support and policies to endure. OFA president Keith Currie has praised the institute’s effort to raise rural issues in this way. He says the federation “was pleased to see these papers underscore the importance of our rural communities.” The papers can be viewed at ruralontarioinstitute.ca/foresightpapers Bottom line Strong rural economic development policies are key to revitalizing communities, but gone are the days of one-size-fits-all plans.
