Breakfast Brief RAISING GRAIN MARKETS EXPECTATIONS Grain markets this morning are led by wheat in the green, but generally mixed with no solid fresh headlines to trade off. Canola prices on the Winnipeg ICE Futures board dropped below the psychologically-significant level of CAD 500/metric tonne. This isn’t necessarily positive as the market will likely slow down over the next two weeks with Christmas holidays approaching. The big news yesterday in outside markets was that the US Federal Reserve bumped their interest rate up by 25 basis points (or 0.25%). It’s expected that the Fed will raise rates again another three times in 2018. However, there are some who think there might be more interest rate increases than just three, given the positive economic activity and reporting seen in the United States. SOUTH AMERICAN CROP UPDATE Heat and limited showers are on the table for the next week for Argentina, the country that most market players are watching as a bullish price catalyst. However, in the second half of next week (Dec 20 — 23), 1 – 3 inches of rain could fall on the northern two-thirds of Argentina. AgResource calculates that next week’s rains are worth roughly 6 million tonnes of corn in Argentina. The Rosario Grain Exchange in Argentina raised its 2017-18 wheat crop estimate by one million tonnes to 17.3 million. The USDA didn’t change their estimate on Tuesday, keeping the Argentine wheat estimate at 17.5 million tonnes. The reason for the upgrade was above-average yields. RGE also pegged the Argentine soybean crop at 54.5 million tonnes (USDA at 57 million tonnes) and kept corn production in the country at 41.5 million tonnes (USDA at 42 million tonnes). Some wetter weather is also expected in southern Brazil, which is pretty important, given the corn crop, there is just starting to pollinate. The soybean crop in Brazil is basically all planted, minus a few fields here and there.
A business plan framework for these modern times A business plan is much more than a document. It is a reflection of all the thinking that goes into how a business will achieve financial success and long term objectives. Accordingly developing a business plan means investing time and energy in thinking through the fundamental issues of: What do you want to do? What capabilities do you bring to the business venture? Where should you put your efforts? What do you need to do to compete, survive and meet goals? As in many other aspects of business management the process matters more than the end product. The framework presented in this document facilitates a planning process as well as provides guidelines for developing the written
There are a few areas in Brazil that we’re watching closer than others, as it relates to soybean production. What’s more interesting though is Brazil is allowing Russian wheat imports. For Brazilian meat to get into Russia, the Kremlin used their massive amount of wheat crop as a pawn and negotiated for some to get bought by Brazil. Usually, American HRW wheat is sold into Brazil if the Argentine wheat crop is too small to meet Brazil’s need.
plan. Developing the business plan is the means to an end rather than an end in itself. For that reason, thinking through the key aspects of the business venture in a logical way is the groundwork for writing a well thought out business plan that clearly communicates it can realistically achieve financial and strategic objectives. A well written business plan will bring the business venture to life by: Describing the proposal, the economic logic and the critical factors contributing to financial and strategic success. Providing clear statements of the choices made and the direction the business is taking. Clearly describing how the plan will be implemented. Writing a business plan can be intimidating to many business owners. (next page)
RUSSIA NOT GIVING UP WHEAT KING TITLE More simply, Russia has pushed passed America in another wheat market with its cheap wheat. There are some indications that US wheat prices are low enough to now compete with a product from the Black Sea. This sentiment is shared by Angie Setzer, VP of Citizens Grain Elevator. Check out our interview with her here! The impact is surely being felt on the likes of France, who has also seen some of its wheat market share taken away by Black Sea players like Russia. French soft wheat exports outside of the European Union are sitting at just over 2 million tonnes, according to FranceAgriMer. That’s up 11% year-over-year but nowhere near the 91% growth rate that the firm was originally expected at the start of the 2017/18 crop year. Within the EU, French soft wheat exports are up 67% year-over-year at 2.65 million tonnes. For the full year, FranceAgriMer is forecasting a 29% increase to just under 8.1 million tonnes. Thus, we can tell that things are tracking well.
Worsley Fabrication & Welding
Coming back to Russia though, with its rise, the country set two new records in November: total grain exports of 5.375 million tonnes and wheat exports of 4.214 million tonnes. The previous monthly wheat export record was set in August 2014 (right after their harvest) with 4.211 million tonnes of wheat getting shipped out. Also, Russian wheat exports to Egypt in the 2017 calendar year have now topped 5.5 million tonnes! Who might be looking to import as much wheat in 2017/18 though is India? It’s estimated that there was still 24 million tonnes of wheat in Indian storage as of November 1, 2017. That’s up 27% year-over-year. We also know that a lot of India’s wheat goes bad because of poor storage facilities. Not to fear! On Tuesday, the USDA said that farmers in India would harvest 98.4 million tonnes of wheat for the 2017/18 crop year. That’s a jump of 13% year-over-year. One of the reasons for the increase is that acreage has expanded by 5% this year. A second reason prices, but for two sub-reasons. First, the India government continues to have a bit more preferential treatment towards wheat and rice production. The second sub-reason is that the Indian government has implemented a 20% import tax on all wheat coming in from abroad. Last year, India mainly imported wheat from the likes of Russia and Ukraine but this year their expectations might be different. While we know Russia is holding the crown, it seems like India won’t need to do any wheat deals with Russia as Brazil did.

- business plans are for external and internal use uncertainties in the proposal. Too much detail or too little detail can reduce the ability of the document to communicate the plan. Graphics without substance can get in the way of demonstrating the logical thinking that is the basis for a business plan. The overuse of jargon or technical language may get in the way of communicating the strength of the business proposal. Consultants can assist individuals in writing their business plan. However, only the business owners can do the planning and decision making that is necessary in developing a business plan. Be aware of investing too much time and energy in producing an overly polished document rather than thinking through the focus, scope and direction of the business venture. The planning/thinking process becomes the basis for a business plan when business owners invest time and energy in reasoning through the following specific activities: 1. Developing vision and mission statements to articulate why the business exists and what the business will look like in the future. 2. Determining business goals and developing strategic and finan-
cial objectives for the business. 3. Completing an internal analysis to identify strengths that give the business certain advantages as well as weaknesses, which are areas where the business is vulnerable and has to improve. 4. Completing an external analysis of the industry, the market(s) and the competition in order to understand market dynamics as well as the resulting opportunities and threats that might affect the farm business. 5. Looking for key success factors in provide a fit between opportunities in the external business envi-
ronment and the strengths in which the business has a competitive edge 6. Looking for key risk factors which can make the business vulnerable to the forces of changes and threats from competitors. 7. Making deliberate choices to implement actions and processes that can add up to a sustainable competitive advantage over the long term. 8. Developing a business strategy that allocates resources to those areas that realize economic opportunities, provide a basis for sustaining a competitive advantage and contribute to long term objectives.

Much of this is due to uncertainty surrounding the content, emphasis and length. A general rule is to focus on the main issues including the choices made. However, the specific content and detail will depend on the context in which the business plan is being developed. A business plan for the internal use of the business owners can provide a roadmap and yardsticks for measuring progress. The focus is on establishing a vision for the future, the desired outcomes for the business in the future and specific actions and expected levels of performance that are contribute these outcomes. A business plan intended for external use such as lenders would focus on how marketing and production performance would contribute to financial success in a particular industry and market. There is no standard format for organizing business plans however there are a number of factors to guide the writing process. It is important to find out the expectations reviewers might have for format and length in each context. A set of financial projections are not a business plan. They can be attached to the business plan as an appendix to demonstrate that the business owner has considered the

Canada supports agricultural trade at WTO on science. Doing so improves market predictability for Canada’s farmers and processors, and provides stability for Canadian consumers. “Canada advocates for sciencebased and evidence-based decision making. Canada believes it is crucial to work collaboratively to reduce and eliminate unjustified non-tariff measures, particularly in the agricultural sector, and reaffirm our commitment towards sciencebased and evidence-based decision making at the WTO,” said FrançoisPhilippe Champagne, Minister of International Trade. “The Government of Canada supports an effective, transparent and science-based trade environment for Canadian farmers and processors. Canada’s agricultural exports are a key driver of the Canadian economy, and our government is working hard to ensure predictability for trade, which will help increase innovation and productivity, while strengthening the middle class,” chimed in Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s agriculture and agrifood industry is a powerful driver of Canada economy, providing one in eight jobs to Canadians. In 2016, Canada’s agriculture and food exports set a new record of over $60 billion.

Ensuring a predictable and progressive global trade environment helps Canada’s agricultural exporters remain competitive in today’s economy and creates opportunities for middle-class Canadians. To advance this priority, Canada is working with World Trade Organization (WTO) members in support of balanced global trade governance at the 11th WTO Ministerial Conference in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The Honourable FrançoisPhilippe Champagne, Minister of International Trade, and the Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, are pleased to announce that Canada signed the Joint Ministerial Statement on Trade in Food and Agricultural Products. The statement re-affirms the central importance of science and risk analysis to protect public health while enabling the safe use of pesticides. Canada continues to support efforts to ensure that the global trade community makes decisions based

Richard Kamchen The latest Canadian farm cash receipts released by Statistics Canada reveal strength across grain and livestock sectors, a trend that’s likely to continue. Year-over-year Canadian farm cash receipts between January and September rose for the seventh consecutive time, reaching $45.4 billion in 2017, up 3.3 per cent, according to the StatsCan data. The dairy sector performed stronger than expected with a seven per cent increase, says Farm Credit Canada’s chief agricultural economist, J.P. Gervais. Gervais predicts fourth quarter farm cash receipts will increase again by about three per cent. For 2018, FCC’s forecast is for a 2.5 per cent gain in farm cash receipts. That, however, would be dependent on the Canadian dollar remaining below 80 cents U.S. on average. Ron Bonnett, president of the Canadian Federation of Agriculture, also sees room for continued strength in Canadian agriculture. “I think the efforts being taken to diversify some of the markets and taking a hard look at how can Canada be a preferred supplier into the Asian market is key in providing that growth and stability going forward,” Bonnett says. The result of ongoing trade negotiations will also play a role, he says. Crop receipts rose 2.6 per cent in the first three quarters of 2017 thanks to canola and non-durum wheat. For 2018, Gervais thinks more canola acres might limit that commodity’s upside. “We definitely expect pulse acres to come down. Those acres are going to have to go somewhere, and I suspect a lot of it is going to go to canola,” Gervais says. Large global wheat supplies will challenge the crop’s strength potential, Gervais says. Livestock receipts in Canada rose $419 million to $18.4 billion in the first three quarters of 2017, and Gervais is bullish about future pork and beef demand. “Demand has been absolutely strong both globally as well as domestically,” Gervais says of pork in 2017. Economic growth in the United States has been a big driver for red meat demand, helping offset high U.S. cattle and calf inventories. “The strength of demand domestically and in export markets has really been helping the red meat sector,” Gervais says. Robust Canadian farm cash receipts show signs of continued strength.

ABP elects new executive at annual general meeting For three days, producers, industry, government and media attended Alberta Beef Producers (ABP) Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Calgary from December 4 to 6. Delegates tackled issues impacting the province’s cattle industry, heard from speakers, and participated in resolutions debates and elections. “We’re pleased with the number of new delegates who have joined the organization this year, and brought a renewed energy to our AGM. We have a strong diversity of experience, age and gender represented in our delegate body and on our Board of Directors,” said Rich Smith, ABP Executive Director. Fawn Jackson and Cherie CopithorneBarnes with the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef spoke about the Certified Sustainable Beef Framework that launched later this week. This voluntary program enables producers and processors to verify the sustainability of their operations. The Framework is centered around the five Global Principles of Sustainable Beef: Natural Resources, People and Community, Animal Health and Welfare, Food, and Efficiency and Innovation. Virgil Lowe, Verified Beef Production Plus (VBP+) Business Manager, presented on the Canadian Beef Sustainability Accelerator pilot project and the importance of producer involvement. Cattle that move through a fully verified sustainable supply chain now have the opportunity to receive financial credits. Producers need to register with VBP+, be a BIXS member, and upload cattle to the CCIA database to qualify. Dr. Rick James-Davies, CFIA Incident Commander for the Western Area Operations Centre, gave an update on the final stages of the bovine tuberculosis investigation. Testing is expected to be completed by Christmas and all lab results should be available by the end of January. Other speakers included Melissa Moggy with Alberta Farm Animal Care on a compromised cattle benchmarking study, Dan Trottier with AgSafe Alberta discussed Occupational Health and Safety on farms and ranches, and John Buckley gave a presentation on modernizing Alberta’s grazing framework. Assistant Deputy Minister Jamie Curran brought greetings on behalf of the Alberta government at the Tuesday evening banquet. The Environmental Stewardship Award was presented to Ian and Carman Murray of Shoestring Ranch near Acme, AB. A salute to outgoing Chair, Bob Lowe was given, and the newly elected Executive members were introduced. Charlie Christie (Trochu) was elected Chair, Kelly Fraser (Red Deer County) was elected Vice Chair, Melanie Wowk (Beauvallon) was elected Finance Chair, and Bob Lowe (Nanton) has a one year term as past Chair. “Our democratic process has elected a strong and dynamic Board of Directors and Executive who are ready to face the challenges and opportunities of the coming year,” said Smith. ABP welcomes the 2018 Board of Directors: Garth Porteous (Bow Island), Sheila Hillmer (Del Bonita), Chris Israelson (Didsbury), Jesse Williams (Hanna), Kelly Fraser (Red Deer County), Tim Sekura (Rocky Rapids), Colin Campbell (Bon Accord), Melanie Wowk (Beauvallon), John MacArthur (Fairview), Brad Osadczuk (Jenner), Fred Lozeman (Claresholm), Charlie Christie (Trochu), Cathy Sharp (Lacombe), Assar Grinde (Bluffton), Ken Stanley (Westlock), Tim Smith (Coronation), Bob Lowe (Nanton).

Canada’s beef farmers hope to learn whether their customers, and ultimately consumers, will pay more for sustainably produced beef coming from a verified production system. Farmers plan to get answers to their queries as part of a one-year pilot project launched in earlier this fall by Cargill, Canada’s largest beef processor. Currently the pilot is only open to Canadian cattle processed at Cargill’s High River, Alta. plant. The project, called the Canadian Beef Sustainability Acceleration pilot, uses a number of existing beef industry programs, including the radio-frequency identification tag system. TheBeef Info-Exchange System, commonly known as BIXS, is used to track cattle from the time farmers tag the animals until they’re processed at Cargill’s High River plant. Sustainability auditing and standards Verified Beef Production Plus is the certifying organization to audit farmers. The Canadian Roundtable on Sustainable Beef developed the sustainability standards farmers must meet. Cargill’s beef sustainability manager Gurneesh Bhandal says one of the pilot’s goals is to meet “growing consumer demand for transparency about where food comes from.” Research shows consumers want to know how animals are raised and how national resources are managed in beef production, Bhandal says. “This project is about creating that transparency for consumers to learn about beef production.” Financial incentives Farmers can earn quarterly credits for all cattle that result in beef coming from the fully verified supply chain. Some of Cargill’s customers help-
ing to fund the pilot include McDonald’s Restaurants, Loblaws and the Swiss Chalet restaurant unit of CARA Operations Ltd. Bhandal says the amount of the credits and the number of participating producers won’t be known until the end of the pilot’s first quarter next year. Farmers don’t have to specifically sign up with Cargill to participate in the pilot. All farmers who are verified by VBP+, registered with BIXS and uploading their cattle data on the Canadian Cattle Identification Agency database are eligible for the financial incentive. The incentive is only paid if the cattle go through the entire verified supply chain from cow/calf to processor. Bhandal says the first financial credits will be paid out to qualified farmers in early 2018. The amount of the financial credits will depend on “how many head of cattle make it through the system.” Farmers await answers Calgary-area cow/calf and feedlot operator Bob Lowe, a participant in the pilot, says farmers want to know if customers and consumers will pay for “everything they’re demanding us to do.” The pilot project “will either say consum-

The second Western Canadian cow-calf survey is now
The first Western Canadian Cow-Calf Survey (WCCCS) was conducted in Fall/ Winter 2014. This is a follow-up to that survey, asking a number of the same questions (head counts, dates and practices pertaining to 2016 Breeding Season all the way through to weaning of 2017 Calf Crop), but some new ones as well. Our goal is to conduct this survey every 3 to 5 years. Survey responses
are being accepted until February 28, 2018. Similar to the 2014 survey, we hope to release the results in early Summer 2018. Paper copies of the survey will be handed out at various producer meetings and tradeshows from late October 2017 until February 2018. Alternatively, you can download and print a paper (hard) copy of
the survey from the www.wcccs.ca website. The online survey can be found at www.tinyurl.com/wcccs2017 or by clicking on the button at wcccs.ca The survey is 49 questions in length, with many of the questions requiring just a check-box response. We fully recognize there is survey overload. To thank you for the time you take to
complete the survey we are able to provide a $25 gift card (select from Federated Co-op, Peavey Mart or UFA) to respondents who complete 80% of the questions. An additional $25 gift card will be provided to the first 100 producers who complete 100% of Section 7A (Cost of Production). Approximately 400 producers across west-
ern Canada completed the survey in 2014. Yes, if you want to receive a complimentary summary report of your production indicators based on your survey responses, you will need to indicate so on the last part of the survey. You also need to provide your email address so that the report can be emailed to you. Surveys similar to
this one are being conducted in other parts of Canada this year. The Ontario survey closed back in May 2017 and results will soon be released. The Atlantic survey is occurring during the same time as WCCCSII – the online version can be found at: https://www. surveymonkey.com/ r/2017-ATL-cow-calf

Beef producers to benefit from China deal Alberta beef producers are thrilled at the potential of $20 million in annual growth from a new trade deal with China. The Beef Site notes the agreement will allow chilled and bone-in Canadian beef and pork to be exported to China for the first time. It’s a pilot project for now, but Dennis Laycraft, executive vice-president at the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association, is confident it will prove successful and be expanded to all beef processing plants. Announced as part of a swath of trade changes as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wrapped up his trade mission to China last week, the development was a long time coming.
It’s the offspring of a 2010 deal, which provided access by the Chinese to Canadian beef for the first time. That agreement was restricted to boneless, frozen products. Mr Laycraft said in an interview the beef sector expected a rapid, staged opening to the Chinese market. He’s a little disappointed it took so long, but that’s tempered by what the development means for the industry. Bone-in and chilled beef are higher-value meats. Couple that with the fact a current labour shortage means it takes more time to de-bone cuts, Mr Laycraft said, and the new deal is a definitive win. “Every time we find a premium market, it adds value to every animal we raise,” he said. The next priority is securing Chinese market access for offal and fancy meats. “The Chinese market is growing, it’s a high-value market, and it’s often the highest value market for those products,” Mr Laycraft said. Looking to TPP China is already Alberta’s second-largest trading partner, and its rapidly expanding middle class has a taste for Canadian meat. With around 70 per cent of Canada’s beef produced in Al-

berta, the deal is a huge boon for the province. Alberta Trade Minister Deron Bilous called the development “absolutely significant”. Canada is several years away from any kind of free trade deal with China but, as an interim measure, the latest development is positive, he said in an interview. Free trade agreements take up to a decade to figure out, Mr Bilous said, but he is encouraging Ottawa to explore those talks with China — even if the two sides aren’t yet at the table for formal talks. “Trade agreements are absolutely critical to reducing barriers, reducing borders,” Mr Bilous said. Mr Laycraft and Mr Bilous are also crossing their fingers for the new Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement. It’s in the midst of being rejigged after President Donald Trump yanked the US out of the deal. For beef, the revised TPP would see tariffs on exports to Japan drop by more than 10 per cent, further opening up that market. Mr Bilous said the trade deal would also be a huge positive for Alberta’s forestry sector, which is entering a tough time due to increased tariffs being imposed by the US.

Wendy’s to reduce antibiotic use in beef supply
Earlier this month Reuters noted Hamburger chain Wendy’s Co laid out plans on Friday to trim the use of antibiotics that are important to human medicine from its beef supply, the latest step by a food company to fight concerns about resistance to the drugs in people. Starting in 2018, the company will buy about 15 percent of its beef from producers that have each pledged to reduce by 20 percent their use of Tylosin, the one medically important antibiotic they routinely feed to cattle, according to Wendy‘s. Wendy‘s, which says it is the world’s thirdlargest quick-service hamburger chain, plans to

increase the amount of beef it purchases from these producers and others that raise cattle in similar ways. The company also said it finished removing antibiotics important to human medicine from its chicken supply, after pledging to do so last year. “Moving away from routine antibiotic use in their beef production is certainly welcome, and we’d urge them to move quicker,” said Matt Wellington, antibiotics program director for advocacy group U.S. PIRG. Scientists and public health experts for years have warned that the regular use of antibiotics to promote growth and prevent illness in healthy farm animals contributes to the development and spread of drug-resistant superbugs that can infect people. Last month, the World Health Organization recommended that meat producers end such practices. There is “a growing public health concern about antibiotic resistance,” Wendy’s said, adding that the company believes it “could help by reducing or eliminating antibiotic use in our food supply.”
In the United States, the sale and distribution of antibiotics approved for use in food-producing animals fell by 10 percent from 2015 to 2016, in the first such decline since the Food and Drug Administration started tracking the data in 2009. The drop came as restaurants such as McDonald’s Corp and meat suppliers inducing Tyson Foods Inc backed away from using antibiotics in U.S. chicken supplies.

Taste of Africa, made in AB Yinka Adelodun is bringing traditional Nigerian obè sauce to Canadian consumers and shining a spotlight on West African cuisine, with some help from Growing Forward 2. “If I could make that and put it in a jar, would you buy it?” Just two years ago, Yinka Adelodun asked this question of his wife Toyin, as she painstakingly prepared a traditional Nigerian sauce known as obè. By late-October 2017, the couple was selling their jarred obè sauce not only in African specialty shops, but at Calgary Coop and online. “Obè sauce is made of tomato, bell pepper, onions and chillies,” explains Adelodun. “It can be used as a dip, a marinade or a sauce. Obè takes about two hours to make. Nigerian people in Alberta are busy professionals, but you can’t get obè sauce in a supermarket, so I thought I could save them some time by providing obè sauce in a jar.” The timing of this eureka moment could not have been better. The Adeloduns – Yinka is an electrical engineer and Toyin a data analyst – moved from Nigeria to Calgary in 2001 and became Canadian citizens in 2006. By 2015, Yinka was looking to change careers. Toety Cuisines was born. To help get his obè sauce idea
off the ground, Yinka Adelodun reached out to Jan Warren, a New Venture Specialist with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AF). Warren believed that AF’s Food Processing Development Centre (FPDC) in Leduc would be the best place to develop production and packaging processes for the obè sauce. Two grants from the Growing Forward 2 Business Opportunity Program helped Toety Cuisines get going on a sound business basis. “We used these grants to first do a comprehensive market survey,” says Adelodun, “and then to put together a business plan. We got into FPDC and they helped with technical expertise. Alberta is very interested in diversification, so it was a nice fit for us to get this support from the government.” Toety Cuisines’ obè sauce made its commercial debut in October 2016. Initially, the product was sold at African food shops in Calgary, Edmonton and Lethbridge, growing quickly to include African retailers in Fort McMurray, Red Deer and Okotoks, as well as the Toronto area. Adelodun knew that validation from the West African community was critical to the success of the company’s obè sauce. From the beginning, however, he had his eye on a bigger target.

ATV safety makes sense during all times of the year All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) can cause serious injury or death. ATV injuries can be reduced by following these safety practices: • No child/youth under 16 years of age should operate an adult ATV. Ensure your child/youth only rides an ATV that is appropriate for their age, weight, and maturity. Follow manufacturers’ recommendations. • Wear an approved helmet with face and eye protection. • Drive Sober – Alcohol, drugs and ATVs don’t mix. • Refuse to carry or be a passenger on an ATV built for one person. • Take an ATV operator training course. All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) can cause serious injury or death. • Follow all ATV manufacturers’ guidelines. • Children under 16 years of age have an in-
creased risk of injury and death on ATVs. • ATVs weigh hundreds of kilograms and are harder to control than they appear. All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) can cause serious injury or death: Follow all ATV manufacturers’ guidelines. Children under 16 years of age have an increased risk of injury and death on ATVs. ATVs weigh hundreds of kilograms and are harder to control than they appear. ATV rollover events are the most common cause of serious injury and can happen even on flat ground. • ATVs cause more injuries than any other consumer product. The consumption of alcohol and/or drugs (medication or illicit) is a major factor in ATV injuries and deaths. Four-wheel all-terrain vehicles [ATVs] are very popular in Alberta. In 2008, Alberta captured about 22% (17,935 units) of all new ATV sales in Canada making Alberta the number two province for new ATV sales (Quebec had the highest). With this popularity, Alberta has seen an increase in the number of ATV related deaths, hospitalizations and emergency department visits.
There were 11 ATV deaths in Alberta in 2002; however, there were 22 in 2006 and 17 in 2007and 15 in 2008 and 2009. From April 1, 2000 to March 31, 2006 there has been over a 100% increase in the number of ATV-related major trauma patients in Alberta. From 2002 to 2009, children/ youth less than 16 years of age accounted for 15% of all the ATV-related deaths that occurred in the province of Alberta. Children are especially at risk for ATV-related injuries and death because they do not have the physical strength, control, coordination or judgment of an adult. It is very important to read your ATV owner’s manual and follow manufacturers’ guidelines and warning labels. ATVs are heavy, complex, high speed vehicles with very special characteristics that make operating them different than operating any other type of motorized vehicle. ATVs have little protection and a high centre of gravity which can lead to the ATV being unstable contributing to rollover events. In Alberta the leading cause of ATV deaths was rolls/flips most of them happening on flat terrain.
Our cows can't read...
...but they bought the ranch
The list of real cow outfits in the bull business gets real short... real fast. 1000 mother cows, 400 sale bulls, 8 breed lines... nearly 12,000 bulls sold in 49 consistent consecutive bull sales...our cows bought the ranch. Solid, methodical and tenacious, we've used "old school" genetics, sound breeding principles and the "eye of a cowman" to develop eight different bull lines.

Today when you are bull shopping, you are flooded with numbers, many meaningless... you can't decide what is most important. We give you the simple important "real world" data that makes us both money. The auction mart doesn't ask you to send in a list of your epds. He buys your calves because they're "big stout hairy calves" that look the part and because of your good reputation. Keep it simple, cull the open ones, the problem ones and the ugly ones and you will make as much progress as is possible. A well-designed cow operation is very profitable at today’s price levels. Survive and prosper by remembering that a cow is a “low tech machine”. She hates diesel fuel, technology and expensive feed, she harvests grass, stores solar energy and turns it all into high quality protein. Her value to the world can only increase. Our only customers are Canada's commercial cowmen large and small. They buy our bulls because they're good quality, all of them, well culled, they sire the calves the order buyers keep talking about. Our bulls are older summer born twos (22-26 months when you need them), old enough to be tough and
not give trouble. Our bulls can all be left with us till spring, you don't want new bulls around till you need them, so let us look after them. Our bulls are all delivered absolutely free in Western Canada and cost shared in the east. Our bulls can be purchased sight unseen, in fact about half always are. We help select your bulls and they're guaranteed to be what you want... "true satisfaction on arrival". Our customers trust and confidence in us make it all possible. Our bulls are affordable and most all sell to solid commercial cattlemen. Our bulls are guaranteed like no others... you'll have a bull to breed your cows no matter what... hard to get better than that! As sale time approaches, you can view all our bulls on video on our website or we'll send you your very own dVd and Bull Book and you can show the neighbors. In fact, it's probably easier and simpler to buy our bulls than buying bulls locally. You get great service, the best guarantee, lots of selection and your calves will be sired by notionally known bulls. It all helps you to get them sold! Our customers like the fact that all our cattle are managed and fed just like most all commercial cattle. This year call me for your bulls. *free dVd *Free Bull Book * Free delivery "Great Bulls" Call Today. Mac & Pat

Barley has worked its way higher in price
Western Canada cash feed barley pricing has gradually worked its way higher through the fall season. Despite U.S. corn price weakness, Lethbridge cash feed barley bids are holding up rather firmly in the $220 per tonne area. Central Alberta feedlots are around the $207 to $214 per tonne area. That said, prices have stabilized over
the past two weeks. Elevated demand Rising cattle numbers entering southern Alberta feedlots this fall season (up seven per cent relative to last year), plus an advance into more wintery conditions, and less lower quality wheat coming to market this year appear to have elevated feed demand for barley. Also, we can factor in a higher percentage of 2017 Canadian barley production that is of malt quality so growers are reluctant to yet forfeit such high quality inventory into feed channels yet. Statistics Canada revised its 2017 crop estimates last week, pegging Canadian barley production a bit higher than expected. Statistics Canada revised its 2017 crop estimates last week, pegging Canadian barley production a bit higher than expected at 7.9 million tonnes, though still well short of last year’s 8.8 million tonne crop. A large portion of this smaller crop is of better quality, malt quality, though more than the malt sector will require. Competing corn market While our feed market will likely remain firm,

I am concerned that a weakening U.S. corn market may become increasingly competitive for the southern Alberta feed-user dollar. Fundamental news that might lift oppressively bearish attitudes in the corn market remains lacking today. Trade missions have come across the Canada/ U.S. border looking for corn selling opportunities, with a couple of trainloads already scooting north over the border from Montana this fall season. That said, PFCanada suspects that most feeders likely still prefer barley over corn in cattle rations, given the convenience of multiple local sources relative to the risk of relying on crossborder rail deliveries. Also, any weakness in the Canadian dollar, which is now testing below 78 U.S. cents again, works against the economics of hauling U.S. corn north over the border. Throw in the prospect of diverging interest rate policy, with the U.S. expected to raise rates faster than the Bank of Canada, and the loonie could move even lower to make Canadian-produced grain that much more price competitive. Bottom line Growers will remain reluctant sellers of what appears to be malt quality barley into the domestic feed sector for now, and we might be surprised in a few months how much more barley finds its way into export channels than initially anticipated. ________________________________________ Mike Jubinville of Pro Farmer Canada offers information on commodity markets and marketing strategies. Shoestring Ranch recognized for environmental stewardship Alberta Beef Producers (ABP) presented Ian and Carman Murray with the 2018 Environmental Stewardship Award this week at the ABP Annual General Meeting. Each year, ABP recognizes a cattle operation that demonstrates leadership in environmental stewardship – one that contributes to the land while improving productivity and profitability. Ian is the fifth generation of Alberta rancher in his family, who originally homesteaded here in 1883. After ranching west of Calgary in the Jumping Pound District, Ian and Carman moved to Shoestring Ranch near Acme, AB. The cow calf and crop operation runs 180 pairs
and retains calves for a natural beef program. “I feel my connection to the land, water, air is really strong and getting stronger as I progress throughout my career,” said Ian. They began shifting the environmental focus of the ranch through pasture management, but once they switched to focus more on the soil, everything came together. The ranch practices minimum tillage when seeding crops to keep residue anchored in the soil and protect the structure to prevent erosion. “We try to take an environmental focus on all the decisions that we do here at the ranch, and try to include it in all of our management steps,”
said Ian. “We have tried to work with nature as much as we can and we’ve changed the management of our ranch dramatically to do so.” Dugouts are fenced off with several solar power watering systems to provide better quality water for the cattle and support healthy riparian areas. Shelterbelts are maintained to protect from wind erosion and provide wildlife habitat. “I’d like to continue to improve upon the utilization of our land, our production, our cattle and pastures. I’d like to continue to improve the health of our soil and the cleanliness of our water,” said Ian. Ian’s involvement in the industry and community leadership further
21
proves his commitment to environmental ranching practices. He served as a director with the Foothills Forage and Grazing Association and the Agricultural Research and Extension Council of Alberta. He was an early adaptor of the Verified Beef Production program and Environmental Farm Plan. “I don’t think anybody has ever won this award based on the culmination of your life’s events… It is more of a recognition for being on the path. I don’t think anybody who is on this path ever gets to the end of it. There’s always something more to accomplish, to make something a little bit better,” said Ian.

Grower-owned and operated BCfresh Vegetables provides British Columbia families with fresh local produce, the perfect addition to any holiday meal this season. “BCfresh produce comes from over 60 farming families in the Fraser Valley, providing jobs in the community and delivering food from farm to fork,” said Agriculture Minister Lana Popham. “Buying BC means British Columbians know exactly where their food comes from, while supporting our local economy and promoting our province’s farmers.” BCfresh, a 100% grower-owned and operated company, has been promoting the consumption of local produce and encouraging people to fill half their plate with vegetables and fruits for 25 years. With a wide variety of produce such as brussels sprouts, rutabaga and squash, British Columbians have endless possibilities for their culinary creations this holiday season. “For 25 years, BCfresh has been dedicated to providing fresh, local produce to communities across the province,” said Murray Driediger, president and CEO, BCfresh Vegetables. “We are thankful to the B.C. government’s funding program
in making this strong commitment to our growers as we encourage younger people to incorporate locally grown root vegetables into every meal.” The company is receiving over $52,000 in matching funding from the provincial government through the Investment Agriculture Foundation of B.C. (IAFBC) to encourage B.C.’s younger people to look for locally grown fruits and veggies when grocery shopping. The cost-sharing program delivered through IAFBC aims to promote local food and beverages that are grown, raised, harvested and processed in B.C. The B.C. government is taking a three-pillared approach to support the province’s agriculture, seafood, and food and beverage processing sectors and to encourage the consumption of B.C. products. An enhanced Buy BC marketing program will help local farms like BCfresh market their products within the province to grow their businesses. Feed BC will also be established to increase the use of B.C. foods in hospitals and other government facilities. Grow BC will be created to help B.C. producers expand local food production.

Craft beer expansion About 90 per cent of current production was planted in the last five years, thanks to the craft beer industry, Bredenhof says. The production of hops, a flavouring and preserving ingredient in beer, is slowly returning to Western Canada, particularly British Columbia. “I think B.C. is now more than the rest of the country combined at this point,” says Ray Bredenhof, founder and chairman of the British Columbia Hop Growers Association. He estimates provincial hops acres between
ies existed in the province. That number’s since climbed to nearly 150, he says. “People’s tastes in beers have changed, so the needs of the brewers have changed away from bulk commodity bitter and hops to the more specialized aroma hops.” Washington State remains the largest hops producer in North America, but B.C.’s craft brewershave put value into using local product, and he predicts that demand and ideal growing conditions will lead to more hops being grown. The Northern Horizon, December 22, 2017 Prairie provinces In Manitoba, current hops acres are below 30, says Craig Linde, Manitoba Agriculture’s diversification specialist at Canada-Manitoba Crop Diversification Centre. He remains uncertain about the province’s rate of future growth. “We can grow hops here, but it’s not a crop that’s easily grown,” Linde says. He notes a large investment is required up front, with no major return in the first year. Hops are also affected by many common pests
already in Manitoba, and growing them is very labour intensive, even with mechanization. Manitoba is also near the limits of hops’ frostfree day requirements. Increased competition But intensifying competition between local breweries might drive some of them to differentiate their products by focussing more on local ingredients, Linde says. “Public demand for locally brewed craft beer, ag tourism, and general natural health food/supplement markets seem to be growing,
31
and hops fit nicely into all of these,” Linde says. Members of the recently formed Alberta Hop Producers’ Association only have about half a dozen planted acres up to now, but president Wade Bendfeld is extremely positive about the future. He says every craft brewer the group’s contacted asks about when they can try members’ hops, and adds the expanding home brewing market is another segment to access. Bottom line B.C. is leading the way in renewed hops production interest across Canada and competition between breweries may drive locally grown hops. Richard Kamchen

AgriProfit$ dairy cost study deadline is Jan. 15, 2018 The Economics Section at Alberta Agriculture and Forestry conduct the on-going annual survey of dairy enterprises over the course of one year called the Dairy Cost Study. The Dairy Cost Study program provides good business management information to farm operators, so they can make better business management decisions. Good information is the most important step in managing for profitability. The research is compiled and results are published in a benchmark report called The Economics of Milk Production. The objectives of this publication are: To provide a current and continuing account of the costs and re-

turns of milk production in Alberta To aid in the creation of valuable research information to Alberta milk producers, and To provide economic information for dairy industry partners Participants receive: a detailed business analysis of their dairy farm / enterprise production costs and returns as a total, per cow and per hectolitre (hL) basis tables and charts giving a quick snapshot of the farm’s cost breakdown graphs identifying the farm results compared to other participants on the study report comparing farm results to the provincial benchmarks long-term participants receive
their own five year benchmark report to assess the performance of their farm business and over time The Economics of Milk Production benchmark report mailed directly to the farm Participation only requires your valuable time when providing farm information for your analysis. If “all good things take time”, then good management information is well worth the time producers invest. Information is collected for the purpose of conducting research on the costs and returns of milk production in Alberta. Only aggregated, non-identifying information will be published and made available to the general public and organizations for research purposes. The contact information you provide may be used to notify you electronically of program updates or to ask for feed-
back to evaluate and enhance program effectiveness. The collection is authorized under section 33(c) of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIP) Act and managed and protected in accordance with the Act. How is my information used? Information participants share with the Dairy Cost Study Business Analysis and Research Program is used in applied economic research to address topical issues and questions from Alberta producers. Enrollment is now open for the 2018 production year. Deadline for application is January 15, 2018. To enroll or for further information contact: Pauline Van Biert 780415-2153

Board Delegations
Area B Potable Water Tank Loader Stations Update
TransCanada Kiel Giddens and Catie Underhill updated the Board on TransCanada projects in the region. Community benefits included $6 million in annual property taxes, $3 million invested in skills training and education in BC and community investments in local initiatives and programs. STARS Glenda Farnden and Greg Schmidt updated the Board that the proposed rotary wing trial has not yet happened due to unforeseen delays. The Board agreed to coordinate another meeting between BC Emergency Health Services, Northern Health, Stars, and PRRD representatives to work through any identified issues preventing the trial. KPMG Oscar Poloni updated the Board on the status of the Operational Review and Efficiency Audit. He noted the results of an employee survey, and advised that some additional background research and jurisdictional analysis of the corporation is underway. The next steps will be for KPMG to issue a draft report to management for internal review and validation on or before November 30th and to issue a draft report to the Board before Christmas. He advised that interviews with Board members will be held in January 2018. Peace Liard Regional Arts Council
PLRAC gifted the board:
Sue Popesku, Donna Kane and Kit Fast thanked the Board for their ongoing support of arts, culture and heritage in Northeast BC since 1982. They Lil Cowboy watercolour by Carla Hauber reported on five major projects undertaken in 2017 to celebrated both the arts and the 75th Anniversary of the Alaska Highway including: a song competition resulting in an Alaska Highway Songs CD that was sold around the region and the Alaska Highway Trencher project. The Council plans to introduce a northern literary festival in 2018.
The Regional Board authorized that the Ronald and Nora Graham application proceed to the ALC with the condition that the remainder of their land be consolidated with the adjacent property. The David A Simpson and the Loewen application will also proceed to the ALC.

As such, the Electoral Area Directors will be contracting a Grant Writer for 2018 to assist non-profit community groups in researching and applying for grants so they can undertake new projects and services that benefit us all. Director Goodings along with Regional District staff are working with the North Peace Fall Fair Society to update the lease agreement and establish a designated camping area at the Fall Fair grounds in order to better support their operations.
Transfer Station Closures or Canceled Meeting Information Please watch the PRRD website prrd.bc.ca and Facebook page facebook.com/OfficialPRRD for meeting cancellations and transfer station closures due to weather and road conditions.

Agricultural Land Reserve Applications
On June 24, 2017, Area B approved a water function with a 91% yes vote. Urban Systems Ltd. provided design options for the potable water tank loader stations and an RFP for the supply of prefabricated buildings and water treatment equipment was issued for the chosen concept. The next step will be to go out to tender for construction of the five potable water stations. Construction will start in the spring of 2018 and all five stations are expected to be in service by fall of 2018.
Joel McKay, Chief Executive Officer and Derek Baker, Director of Economic Development presented to the Board regarding Economic Development in the region and how NDIT can assist the PRRD through grant programs such as the Economic Development Capacity Building program and/or grant writing support. Healthy economies help foster healthy communities through an increased tax base, improved local infrastructure, job creation, business retention and expansion, community resiliency through diversification, productive and highest value use of property, improved quality of life, and building a cohesive regional vision.

Zombie apocalypse is here, just in time for the holidays The Zombie Apocalypse is here just incase you missed it. No there wasn’t a horrific invasion, there was no violence or bloodshed either. In fact, the people who have become zombies, it would appear, did so willingly. Texting while you walk, while you drive, while you have meetings and right after you have sex. Looking down, oblivious to the world around you, yes, you are a part of the biggest invasion in the world today, the Zombie Apocalypse. There is a movement that began here in Canada a little over a year ago, wherein some motorcyclists are calling for the legalization of lane splitting. I have ONE, only ONE huge objection to that.... NO ONE FOLLOWS THE RULES OF THE ROADS AS THEY EXIST NOW. You know, without a doubt that your city has the stupidest drivers ever. You encounter them daily. You know without a doubt that there are immigrants to this country who have gotten a license that should not have one, even in a smaller city like Grande Prairie we have them. It’s as if someone gets tired of doing their job and just gives these people licenses. There are drivers both professional and unprofessional that are texting, reading, disciplining their kids, putting on make up, fighting with their spouses and closing business deals, all while driving People don’t just drive in their vehicles these days, they are too busy living their lives inside their cars, trucks, SUV’s and vans to care about you and your life or your legal right to lane split. Let’s take a look at a few hard facts about the
Canadian end of the human race: #1 - People know drinking and driving kills and yet, they catch an average of how many drunks each year driving? The stats from MADD here in Alberta? 1 in 5 people involved in a crash had been drinking. In 5 years 8,600 Albertans have been charged with impaired driving. #2 - People have known that texting and driving is dangerous for a good number of years now, and yet according to Rate.ca: Distracted Driving is now the number one risk on Canadian roads contributing to 8 in 10 collisions. #3 - We live in a country where we have a TV show called CANADA’s WORST DRIVER - does that not tell you anything? And you want to risk your life Lane Splitting, on your Motorcycle? Seriously? I hope your ICE card is up to date and that you have your affairs in order. Let me ask you something.... Do you really think that you could educate enough drivers out there to make the risk worth it? Do you really think that the guy who is stuck in traffic is gonna let your bike through?
The rider in this video does not help his cause and is just as much of a hot head as the guy in the car and puts himself needlessly at risk. And that my friends is the human race and you really want to risk your life to lane splitting? Whatever floats your boat, but knowing the quality of people driving that I have encountered on the roadways of Canada, you won’t be catching this gal lane splitting, legally or otherwise any time soon. And that’s what’s on my mind today... Belt Drive Betty, Editor & Rider Canada’s MOST Rider Friendly Community Contest: You the riding community and our partners from the Rider Friendly Business Association and Community Futures of Canada help us find that community that made riders feel the most welcome during the 2017 riding season! Join us January 2nd, 2018 as the hunt begins.
Go drive down on the lower mainland of BC during rush hour and tell me if you really think that you want to risk your life that way. The hot heads and road-ragers out there will tune you in in short order and they won’t care if there is a law that would allow you to do that. The video below is from Los Angeles, where Lane Splitting has been legal for years: LINK TO VIDEO https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_ continue=1&v=5Jox3r36z_U

On horsemanship ... in Brazil
There is a breed of horses called Lusitanos. Many people have heard about them but many have not. According to the archives, they are said to be one of the oldest breeds on the planet. The horses were in Portugal and Spain, ridden only by nobility and used for wars. In between the wars they would use them for bull fighting to keep them fit and ready in case another war broke out. During one of the wars the breeding stock was in danger of being killed by the enemy so the owners made a deal to bring many to Brazil for safety. An agreement was made with some of the ranchers boarding the horses to keep some of them as trade for their protection. As the story goes some other Lusitanos got “away” or went “missing” when the owners came back for their horses. As a result Brazil is home to many Lusitanos. The largest Lusitano ranch is in Brazil, 600 head of horses. I had the pleasure of riding about 100 different Lusitanos in Brazil at various ranches. My first trip was about 10 years ago and I have been going back ever since. This November, ten of us will be heading back to enjoy the beauty of Brazil and the magnificent Lusitanos and the friendly people. On my first visit I toured five Lusitano ranches and rode as many horses at each ranch as I could. The ranches offered amazing hospitality, hot appetizers, drinks and music. Each afternoon we were at a different, absolutely amazing ranch. The horses were all washed, braided and polished to a shine. The trainers would demonstrate the horses then ask if anyone would like to ride one. I don’t think I ever said no; I rode as many as I could. My eyes were once again opened to horses and the horse world. I had never sat on horses with such natural talent and athleticism and I have never witnessed, before or since, such fancy and beautiful ranches. I’ve told many people over the years that I could never have imagined, no matter how far I stretched it, ranches as fancy as the ones I experienced. The ease with which the horses floated around the arenas, and splendor and magnificence of the ranches were a perfect match for each other. Some ranches had chandeliers, some had waterfalls and fountains, swimming pools, some had manmade caves and
creeks and all their pasture fence lines lit up at night. The trainers and handlers of the horses were dressed in their best clothes and not a speck of hay, straw or dirt on them. The horses were equally as clean and groomed. They were very proud of their jobs, their horses, their ranches. The sidewalks, roads, stalls, lawns, and everything were kept neat and tidy. Some of the stalls or buildings the horses lived in were three stories high and looked like homes. The horses at the ranches were thin by Canadian standards, but I never saw one horse that looked lame or off in any way. In my opinion, our Canadian horses might be packing too much weight and this could be why I see so many of them a bit off. The reason I was invited to go to Brazil was to do a colt starting demonstration for the Lusitano Breeders. I’m sure I learned more from them and their horses than I was able to teach them. One of the most interesting things I learned was that the horses had been taught incredible shoulder movements. At first I wasn’t sure what was happening when the horses’ shoulder jumped to the right and I would end up with a left lead. By accident, I would hit a button and get a lead change.
After realizing what was happening, I saw for the first time how much movement shoulders could have. When I got back home I went to work and got all my horses moving their shoulders much better. Lusitanos by genetics are very elevated in their movements and cantering on the spot is quite easy for them. After riding horse after horse and feeling how elevated they were I tried to access as much of that in my quarter horses as I could. I was told a long time ago by a wise man to take care of my horsemanship and it would take care of me. I wasn’t exactly sure what he meant at the time, but I think I know now. The adventures, opportunities, destinations and sights I’ve experienced over the years have been a direct result of staying focused on what I’m passionate about - working to become a “Horseman”. I was able to do things I didn’t realize were possible. By the time you read this, I will have been to Brazil and back again with more adventures and learning experiences. I don’t know what is to come but I look forward to it with much enthusiasm. On Jan 20th another group of us will be headed to Costa Rica for a horseback holiday on the beaches. In May I will be in Austria enjoying that amazing country. Then at the end of July another group is headed into the mountains for our annual “High and Wild” trip. Another trip to Brazil is also planned for November 2018! Whatever your passion is do it the best you can and you never know where you will find yourself. Have fun Glenn Glenn Stewart travels internationally conducting clinics and horsemanship demonstrations. The 2018 Clinic season will include, Austria, Costa Rica, Brazil, United States and throughout Canada. Presenting at The Mane Event in Red Deer & The Mane Event in Chilliwack. Glenn offers year round Horsemanship Courses at his home base in Fort St. John, British Columbia. The Horse Ranch is currently accepting bookings for Front Row Seating, Summer Courses, High & Wild and Brazil 2018. Equine vaccines is a topic; this article will help clarify Equine vaccines is a topic that most horse owner have at least heard of, but there maybe some terminology or recommendations that are not fully understood. The goal of this article is to help clarify some vaccine terminology as well as help you as a horse owner decide which vaccines you need for your horse. These guidelines are largely based on the American Association of Equine Practioners (AAEP). Vaccines can be divided into two major categories, 1. Core Vaccines and 2. Non-core/ risk based vaccines. Core vaccine-s target against diseases that your horse can contract while never leaving your farm. These include: West Nile Virus (WNV), Eastern and Western Encephalomyelitis (EEE&WEE), Rabies, Tetanus. The Risk based vaccines, are as their name describes based on your geographical location as well as your horses life style. These include Influenza (EIV), Equine Rhinopnumonitis virus (EHV) commonly called either Rhino or Herpes, Leptospirosis, Potomac horse fever (PHF), and Strangles (Streptococcus Equi). The core vaccines are not related to travel or horse to horse contact. Tetanus is an organism found in the soil that most commonly enters through a wound, or surgical site. West Nile and EEE/WEE are both mosquito born diseased. Rabies is transmitted through saliva, and is most commonly carried by bats and small mammals. Therefor as you can imagine your equine partner doesn’t have to leave their residence to be at risk! The core vaccines (except rabies) need to be given as a 2 dose series 4-6 weeks apart, then as a yearly booster. These vaccines can be given as a 3way which includes tetanus and EEE/WEE, in combination with WNV or as separate vaccines. Most colts at the time of castration receive their first 3 way vaccine. Rabies is given as one dose and boostered yearly. The risk based vaccines that we are going to focus on correlate to our geographical location. These include EIV, EHV, and Strangles. Equine herpes virus has 2 main strains that we are concerned about, they are called EHV-1 and EHV-4. These viruses are spread through inhalation and direct contact of nasal secretions. These viruses can remain latent and once your horse is infected they can become infected for life. Clinical manifestation of this disease are flu like symptoms such as fever, nasal discharge, depression, and poor appetite and abortions. The EHV-1 strain can also cause neurological symptoms such as urine dribbling, incontinence, and ataxia (weakness). Horses that are at risk are ones under stressful situations and ones exposed to groups of horses. The current recommendation for vaccinated
against EHV is a 3 dose series with the second and 3rd dose 4-6weeks apart, then either annual vaccination for low risk horses or a biannual (every 6 months) for horses that are <5years of age, horses that live with pregnant mares, and performance/show horses. The current recommendation for abortion protection is to vaccinate with a vaccine labeled against abortions (Pneumabort K) and administer it at month 5, 7, and 9 of gestation. Influenza is a highly contagious virus that is spread though horse contact and inhaled virus. It causes depression, fever, decreased appetite, severe coughing, and often mild nasal discharge. Horses that have influenza develop large areas if de-ciliation on their trachea 4-6 days after infection. This is what causes the severe coughing, and puts them at risk of secondary bacterial infections. The current recommendations for vaccination by the AAEP is to vaccinate horses with a 3 booster series 4-6weeks apart followed by annual revaccination or biannual every 6 months if high risk. For high risk horses see the above EHV paragraph. There is a combination vaccine that has EHV and EIV for the convenience of boostering high risk horses. Strangles is a bacterial disease which commonly effects young horses. It is also very contagious with horse to horse contact. Strangles often results in significant lymph node swelling on the throat area due to abscesses. Horses usually start to shed the bacteria 2-3 days after the onset of fever, and can shed it for 2-3 weeks. There are some horses who will harbor the infection in their guttural pouch and shed it for years. Strangles can also cause a condition called bastard strangles, where abscesses form internally and can cause major health problems or even death. Strangles should be given as a 2 dose series then booster yearly. We use an intranasal strangles vaccines. Vaccines are not necessarily meant to stop your horse from contracting the above disease
Dawson Creek Veterinary Clinic
BUT it will significantly reduce the amount of virus they are shedding (contagiousness) as well as reduce the severity and duration of their sickness. This is very important as horses with influenza for example, need 4-6 weeks off from riding to give the respiratory tract time to heal. If they are taken back to work early it can lead to chronic allergic airway disease. Vaccinated horses that are only sick for a day or so can go back to work much earlier than unvaccinated horses that remain febrile for several days. Another misinterpretation is to give vaccines only in the spring. While this is good practice for the core vaccines due to mosquito season starting in the spring, your non-core/high-risk vaccines should still be boostered in late summer/fall to give your horse full coverage. Even if you are riding in the community arena you are potentially exposing your horse to disease. The Vaccines we carry are all given intramuscular except for strangles. If you are comfortable giving needles you can purchase the vaccines and give them at home, or you can book an appointment to have a veterinarian give the vaccines and discuss your horses risk level. Hopefully this aids as a helpful reminder of why we vaccinate and what we vaccinate for. This is just a bit of information on common equine diseases and vaccines. If you have Questions or want to make a vaccine protocol tailored to your horses needs fell free to give us a call. Dr. Emily Wilson, DVM

Don’t be a turkey this holiday season, buy from a BC farmer Minister of Agriculture Lana Popham and local turkey farmer Dan Ireland met with Russ Benwell, owner of Red Barn Market, ahead of the busy holiday season to encourage British Columbians to buy B.C. turkeys for their annual festive celebrations. “Purchasing a B.C. turkey is a longstanding tradition for many families in B.C. It puts delicious, festive food on our holiday tables and supports our farms,” said Popham. “When British Columbians choose to buy B.C. turkeys, poultry, and other agricultural products, they support local family farmers like Dan Ireland of Ireland Farms, and in turn, are supporting our local communities.” Red Barn Market is a local grocer with multiple locations that focuses mainly on foods made, raised or grown on Vancouver Island. They are a strong supporter of local turkey sales, allowing
customers to pre-order their holiday birds, and sourcing many free-range turkeys for southern Vancouver Island residents’ holiday meals over the years. “At Red Barn, we are supporting our local farmers and producers to ensure customers are getting the best tasting and quality items,” said Benwell. “Our selection of B.C. turkeys for the holidays are sure to please your family and guests!” B.C. turkeys are getting even more help this year from the provincial government with funding to support the sales of local turkeys in 2018. The B.C. Turkey Marketing Board is receiving $75,000 in matching funding from the provincial government through the Investment Agriculture Foundation of B.C. (IAF) to expand its presence in the local retail marketplace, and to promote the sale of B.C. turkeys through digital cam-

paigns and translated materials for multicultural channels in the new year. “Thanks to the funding, we have the opportunity to reach out to B.C.’s Asian and South Asian communities to encourage the consumption of B.C. turkeys,” said Michel Benoit, general manager and marketing, B.C. Turkey Marketing Board. “In phase one and two of our campaign, we are promoting the benefits of eating turkeys, how to cook them and the history of their popularity in North America.” The cost-shared funding administered by the IAF aims to promote local foods or beverages that are grown, raised, harvested or processed in B.C. The B.C. government is taking a three-pillared approach to support the province’s agriculture, seafood, and food and beverage processing sectors and to encourage the consumption of B.C. products. An enhanced Buy BC marketing program will help local farmers like Ireland Farms market their products within the province to grow their businesses. Feed BC will be established to increase the use of B.C. foods in hospitals and other government facilities, and Grow BC will be created to help B.C. producers expand local food production. On US beef consumption and demand U.S. domestic beef consumption is projected to be 56.6 pounds per capita for 2017, up from 55.4 pounds in 2016 (retail weight). That is a 2.2 percent year-over-year increase. Beef consumption is higher because beef production is increasing; in fact, it is projected to be up 3.8 percent year over year from 2016.
45
Ski the Peace and you just might find yourself in the Rocky Mountains
Domestic consumption is up less, in percentage terms, than beef production for a couple of reasons. First, growth in beef exports in 2017, projected to be up 12-13 percent over 2016, moves some of the additional production off-shore. That, along with minor adjustments in ending stocks, will result in a total domestic supply (disappearance) that is up roughly 2.8 percent year over year. Finally, though U.S. population grows slowly, it does still grow, so per capita consumption will increase even more slowly when the total domestic supply is spread across a larger U.S. population. Per capita beef consumption bottomed recently in 2015 at 54 pounds, so the 2017 level represents a 2.6 pounds per capita increase in beef consumption the past two years. Beef production and consumption are projected to increase again in 2018, with a forecast increase in beef production of 4.5 percent resulting in per capita consumption of 57.8 pounds, a 2.1 percent additional increase in per capita beef consumption. Increased beef consumption does not, by itself, indicate anything about beef demand. We are consuming more beef because we are producing more beef. The question of beef demand hinges on the question of “at what price will consumers eat this additional beef? In general, we expect that increasing supplies will result in lower prices but how much lower is the key.
Retail beef prices are expected to decrease in 2018 given additional beef supplies. This will put additional pressure on wholesale beef prices as well as fed and feeder cattle prices. Derrell S. Peel, Oklahoma State University Livestock Marketing Specialist

Demand has been a pleasant surprise in 2017. Retail beef prices are currently higher than last year despite the increase in beef supplies in 2017. Beef demand is all the more impressive given that total meat supplies are higher year over year, not only the result of more beef, but also increased pork and poultry production. November retail Choice beef prices were $5.81 per pound, up from 5.76 per pound in October and above that same level of $5.76 per pound one year ago. The all-fresh retail beef price was $5.64 per pound in November, up from $5.62 per pound in October and above the November 2016 price of $5.59 pound. The ratio of retail beef prices relative to pork and poultry remains very strong, holding near to record levels achieved during the record high prices in 2015. The calculated beef demand index, which accounts for pork and poultry impacts as well as increased beef production, showed a slight increase for the third quarter of 2017.

It is time to invest in NE BC agriculture The Northeast region of British Columbia, also known as the Peace region, has a robust agricultural sector which includes a range of products such as grain, oil seed, honey and livestock. With an abundance of rural and agricultural land and a combination of flatland, foothills and mountains, the Northeast is similar to a prairie landscape. With close to 2.5 million acres in production, the Northeast region is the largest agricultural region in British Columbia, and home to some 1,800 farms, producing well over $100 million worth of product annually. The area has an op-
timal low-temperature growing season coupled with long hours of daylight, which make agricultural production successful. Almost 90% of British Columbia’s grain and 95% of Canola are produced in the Northeast. Farms in the Northeast enjoy the dual advantages of low land prices and low cost of production. The area’s proximity to west coast grain terminals is also a significant cost advantage. Areas of potential growth and diversification for the sector include livestock finishing, dairy and eggs, and expanded game farming.
