Canada joins global partners in support of agriculture innovation and trade
Northern Horizon
The Government of Canada recognizes that Canadian innovation has helped make our country a leader in producing safe, high quality products and we are committed to fostering innovation in the agricultural sector – here in Canada and beyond. The Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, Lawrence MacAulay, is pleased that Canada has joined Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Honduras, Jordan, Paraguay, the United States, Uruguay, Vietnam, and the Secretariat of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in supporting the International Statement on Agricultural Applications of Precision Biotechnology. The Statement sends a strong message to governments around the world that we must strive for functional, risk-based regulatory approaches that encourage innovation and facilitate trade if we are to more effectively unlock the benefits from the latest scientific advances such as gene

editing. It is critical that regulatory frameworks be rooted in science, protect animal and plant health as well as the environment, while ensuring only safe products get to market. It is also important that they are transparent, predictable, and focus oversight on those products that pose potential risk. Governments must create an enabling environment in which all players are able to take advantage of advances in innovation. In supporting the International Statement on Agricultural Applications of Precision Biotechnology, Canada is committing to work with international partners to minimize unnecessary barriers to trade related to the regulatory oversight of products of precision biotechnology.

Breakfast Brief “Patience, persistence and perspiration make an unbeatable combination for success.” – Napoleon Hill (American author) SOYBEAN PRICES RALLY INTO NOVEMBER (Nov 2, 2018) Soybean prices are leading grain markets higher this morning, following yesterday’s gains on news that the trade war may end soon. While the demand buzz is undoubtedly positive, there is still quite a bit of grain in the U.S. that needs to be worked through. A fresh farm journal survey of nearly 700 farmers suggests that nearly 2/3’s of this year’s harvest in the U.S. will be stored on the farm, with only 20% of the crop priced/already contracted. One of the demand factors for corn that’s been well-received by corn farmers has been the law pushed out from the White House that allows E-15 gasoline to be sold yearround (previously it was just eight months). However, with the lack of infrastructure to support this, S & P Global Platts says that it could take as much as 15 years to see E-15 be sold nationwide! That being said, corn prices for October lost 1.4%, but are up a little more than 4% year-over-year. Soybean prices find fresh legs After posting a new monthly low, soybean prices jumped about 4% in a few minutes after a tweet from U.S. President Donald Trump saying trade talks are going “nicely.” The G-20 in Buenos Aires is going to be held at the end of November, and the lead-up to the event has been hotly anticipated, as it’s widely expected that a lot of sideline activity will happen. The news also comes right before the U.S. mid-term elections, held next week on Tuesday, November 6. With most of China’s tariffs directed at red, farming states, even the suspicion of some diplomacy starting back up is welcome news, not just for grain markets, but also its participants. After all, U.S. soybean exports to China were down 80% year-over-year at just 132,000 MT. Comparably, Brazilian soybean exports to China jumped 28% to nearly 7.6 MMT! Overall, Chinese soybean imports in September were the smallest in two years, and CNOIC says that total 4Q2018 bean imports will likely come in at 20 MMT, down 17% year-over-year. On that note, in October, soybean prices on the Chicago Board of Trade closed nearly 1% higher than September’s finish, but they were still tracking about 14% below prices at this time a year ago. Soybean prices the last two years have been pricing larger global soybean inventories, not just the recent trade war.
Livestock Producers Receive Tax Relief for 2018 The Government of Canada today released a list of additional regions in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec and New Brunswick where livestock tax deferral has been authorized for 2018 due to drought. On September 14th, 2018, the Government announced the initial list of prescribed regions in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Quebec for livestock tax deferral purposes. The livestock tax deferral provision allows producers in prescribed drought or excess moisture regions to defer a portion of their 2018 sale proceeds of breeding livestock until 2019 to help replenish the herd. The cost of replacing the animals in 2019 will offset the deferred income, thereby reducing the tax burden associated with the original sale. Eligibility for the tax deferral is limited to those producers located inside the prescribed areas. Producers in those regions can request the tax deferral when filing their 2018 income tax returns.
King oilseed: canola prices or soybean prices? Canola prices are the most expensive vegetable oil right now on the market, and a lot of the market is noticing the possibility to the downside. The problem is, this argument has been made for roughly the last year. And with that in mind, canola contracts hit new yearly lows this past Wednesday! The elephant in the room for canola prices has consistently been the U.S.-China trade war, but with that possibly ending (as suggested above), might canola prices rise significantly? Should said trade war between Washington and Beijing (and its constituents) end, it’s likely that canola prices won’t likely rally as much as soybean prices will. This is mainly because the market has already applied a 25% discount to U.S. soybean prices.
NEW 3,600 SQ FT SHOP
Following this line of thinking, if the trade war ends, and the 25% tariff is revoked, then you’ll likely see soybean prices recover most of this discount. I have been quoted previously, saying that we might see beans climb $1.25 – $1.50 USD per bushel in Chicago should a resolution be found. However, canola prices are unlikely to push higher by a proportional amount. That being said, canola prices have been resilient on the recent increase in export demand, something we’ve been calling out for our canola Graincents readers. Through week 13 of the Canadian canola 2018/19 crop year, exports are now sitting at 2.33 MMT, just 2.3% behind last year after a few strong weeks of shipments. Three weeks ago, canola exports were tracking nearly 16% behind 2017/18’s pace. Overall, canola prices have been pressured by farmer selling and following soybean prices lower, but we know November tends to a positive month for grain prices. Keep this mind going forward (but don’t wait until the end of the month to act on it!). Start the month’s grain marketing plan by posting a few blocks of your harvest on the Farmlead marketplace! Better conditions ahead for pastures Grazing land and forage crops across the country have certainly been tested by extreme weather this past year. The Prairies and Quebec both saw extended dry conditions throughout the spring and summer, which left many pastures looking like billiard tables and impacted forage yields, sending the price of hay through the roof. To cap off the growing season, the Prairies saw snow and rain, which further hampered the crop, while Quebec and the Maritimes also saw moisture. Cedric MacLeod is the executive director of the Canadian Forage and Grassland Association and a New Brunswick farmer. He says while the snow and rain were detrimental to forage crops, the wet weather was a help to pastures. “This is a pretty important time to be getting some moisture and restoring soil moisture reserves, so we are ready for next spring,” MacLeod says. High hay prices The dry weather situation in Alberta was so bad this summer, says Harry Brook, Alberta Agriculture crop specialist, that it resulted in hay prices spiking, making it pointless in some cases to keep cattle. “There’s astronomical prices that people are asking for, but anyone

who is raising cattle for a living will not pay over a certain amount,” says Brook. He says they were better off selling cattle. Saskatchewan saw a mix of conditions with the western part of the province dry, while the northeast saw excess moisture. Terry Kowalchuk, a forage crop specialist with the Ministry of Agriculture, says this variation between different areas of the province was reflected in the price of hay. “We’ve heard of prices as low as $40 per ton for hay this year in the northeast where they had excess supplies, and anywhere from $200 to $250 per ton in drought-affected areas,” Kowalchuk says. Industry Development Specialist with the Province of Manitoba, Glenn Friesen, says he also heard reports of cattle moving to market sooner because of what farmers would need to pay to feed them. “Producers are having a hard time seeing the economics of it, so we are still seeing some sales of animals,” Friesen says. He notes that while dry conditions were hard on pastures, producers’ management practices have improved significantly, allowing them to better stand up to adverse conditions. Article by: Craig Lester

The objectives of this publication are: To provide a current and continuing account of the costs and returns of milk production in Alberta To aid in the creation of valuable research information to Alberta milk producers, and To provide economic information for dairy industry partners Participants receive: a detailed business analysis of their dairy farm / enterprise production costs and returns as a total, per cow and per hectolitre (hL) basis tables and charts giving a quick snapshot of the farm’s cost breakdown graphs identifying the farm results compared to other participants on the study
report comparing farm results to the provincial benchmarks long-term participants receive their own five year benchmark report to assess the performance of their farm business and over time The Economics of Milk Production benchmark report mailed directly to the farm Participation only
requires your valuable time when providing farm information for your analysis. If “all good things take time”, then good management information is well worth the time producers invest. Enrollment The program is always open to new participants. You can enroll at any time.

A reminder that Alberta Agricultural Products Marketing Council is conducting a plebiscite for the Alberta Beef Producers (ABP) on the matter of its service charge model. Voting closes November 13, 2018. Norine Moore, chair of Marketing Council, says that delivery services for mail-in ballots may be impacted as a result of the Canada Post labour disruption. “As with everyone else, we will be learning more about the specifics of the labour disruption as rotating blackouts are announced each day. Because the impact is really unknown, Marketing Council is encouraging producers to take the potential for slower mail into consideration when they cast their vote.“ “If you have received a ballot in the mail, make sure you fill it out and return it as soon as possible,” Moore adds. “If you are concerned about the mail, you also don’t have to mail it back. You can take the completed ballot with the mailing envelope to an AFSC office or to one of the ABP regional meetings and just put it in the ballot box there.” “The question on the ballot asks producers if they would like the ABP service charge model to be refundable at the request of the producer - which is the current model - or to be non-refundable, where all of the service charges stay with the Commission,” she says. Eligible producers can vote in person at the ABP Fall Regional Meetings polling stations or at any Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC) office now until November 13. Please note those offices are closed November 12, and also at lunch. More information on the plebiscite, eligibility criteria, and voting locations can be found at www.agriculture.alberta.ca/beefplebiscite or by contacting the Returning Officer at 1-855-6673311, AlbertaPlebiscite2018@mnp.ca.

When you find Anthrax in your livestock By Dr. Zoe Ross Anthrax is a highly contagious and usually fatal disease that is caused by bacteria called Bacillus anthracis. Although, anthrax has not been a significant problem in the Dawson Creek area, cases of anthrax have been reported several years ago in livestock located near Fairview and more recently in a herd near Fort St. John. The disease can affect many mammals, including humans; cattle and sheep seem to be more susceptible than horses and goats. It is a disease that occurs around the world and sporadically shows up. The bacteria forms spores which can survive in the soil for hundreds of year. Cases of anthrax typically occur during warm summer months: July, August and September. Heavy rainfall or wet weather followed by a period of hot dry weather can result in an outbreak because spores
can be brought to the soil surface. Some outbreaks have been associated with excavation or soil movement which brings spores to the surface. Infection occurs when spores are ingested, inhaled or penetrate the skin. Cattle and sheep are more susceptible because they graze close to the ground and are more likely to ingest some soil with the spores in it. After exposure animals usually become sick within a week. Often the first indication of a problem is finding animals suddenly dead. After death, a bloody discharge exudes from the mouth, nose and anus, effectively re-contaminating the soil with more bacteria. The treatment of anthrax can be difficult because the disease progresses very quickly, hence there is often insufficient time to initiate treatment before death. If antibiotics can be administered promptly, therapy may be useful
since Bacillus anthracis is highly susceptible to many antimicrobials. Anthrax can be prevented by vaccination. Annual vaccination is recommended for cattle and sheep 2-4 weeks before spring turnout on pasture and during disease outbreaks in endemic areas. Carcasses are a source of recontamination of the soil so if anthrax is suspected notify your veterinarian and cover the carcass with a tarp. All contaminated carcasses will have to be properly handled and disposed of to prevent further contamination and spread of the disease. If you have any further questions about anthrax or other animal diseases, feel free to contact the veterinary staff at the Dawson Creek Veterinary Clinic.
With your help dignity is within reach for all. Please give generously this year. Support Your Local Charities for the less fortunate in our community!

Alberta’s cull cow market Many cattle producers are wondering about the cull cow market this fall. Jason Wood, provincial livestock market analyst with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, breaks down the numbers. Wood says that overall, the 2018 Alberta cull D1-2 cow market has been in line with the historical seasonal trend. “The market has been stable with the monthly provincial price ranging between just over $85 per cwt to $96.50 per cwt.” Provincially, cull cow prices averaged $85.50 per cwt in September which was down $4.50 per cwt from August. “For the first half of October,” says Wood, “Cull cows were $85.34 per cwt or just under $1,200 for a 1,400 lb. cow, putting prices this fall about 3.5 per cent below last year.” Woods adds that on a cash basis, Alberta’s cull cow market has traded at a premium to the U.S. cull cow market in 2018. “During the week of October 15, 2018, the Alberta cull cow market was $9.60 per cwt over the U.S., and that is more than $3 per cwt higher than the five year average for the same week.” Wood says based off the seasonal trend, “Cull cow prices could range between mid-$70 and
mid-$80 per cwt for the remainder of 2018.” As for a Canadian cattle slaughter update, Wood says that the number of cattle processed has increased in 2018. “From January to October 5, 2018, the number is 2.36 million head, 6.6 per cent above 2017 and 13.1 per cent above the five year average.” “Year to date fed steer and fed heifer slaughter is up 5.2 per cent and 5.1 per cent, year over year,” he notes. “Year to date cull cow slaughter is up 15 per cent year over year and 25.6 per cent

CCA applauds looming CPTPP ratification The Senate of Canada passed Bill C-79 to implement the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). The bill then immediately received Royal Assent. Following a few more documentary necessities, CCA expects that in the next few days, Canada will notify the CPTPP Secretariat in New Zealand that we have ratified the Agreement and join Australia, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand and Singapore as the first six to ratify. The CPTPP will come into force 60 days after New Zealand receives Canada’s notification. Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA) President David Haywood-Farmer offered his congratulations to International Trade Minister Jim Carr and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for placing a priority on ensuring that Canada would be among the first six countries to implement the CPTPP. We were also pleased to see the Senate of Canada work quickly to approve Bill C-79, and are particularly grateful to Senator Raynell Andreychuk who chaired the Committee review and Senator Sabi Marwah who sponsored the bill
“It’s great news for beef producers that the deal will be coming into effect this year,” Haywood-Farmer said. “The long years of recovering lost market access are firmly behind us now, and we have the bonus of seeing new markets open up to high quality Canadian beef.” The key objective for Canadian beef producers in the CPTPP was to improve access to the Japanese market by lowering the tariff and shielding Canadian beef from Japan’s safeguard tariffs. The current Japanese tariff on Canadian beef is 38.5 per cent. When the CPTPP comes into force, the Japanese tariff will immediately drop to 27.5 per cent on Canadian fresh beef and to 26.9 per cent on frozen beef. On April 1, 2019 Canada will enjoy a second cut down to 26.6 per cent on both fresh and frozen and eventually down to 9 per cent over several years.
Vietnam is an emerging market and expected to represent important growth potential for Canadian beef. Canadian beef exports to Vietnam in 2017 were $3.9 million with a 20 per cent tariff. Once Vietnam implements CPTPP in 2019, their initial two tariff cuts will immediately bring the tariff down to 6.6 per cent and then to zero in 2020.

The CCA expects the remaining five CPTPP signatory countries (Brunei, Chile, Malaysia, Peru and Vietnam) to bring the Agreement into force as well in 2019. When they do, they will have to catch up by making two tariff cuts immediately on implementation.
In 2017, Canada exported $160 million of beef

to Japan with the 38.5 per cent regular tariff on fresh and a 50 per cent safeguard tariff on frozen beef. With CPTPP, Canadian beef will be exempt from the Japanese safeguard, noted HaywoodFarmer. “I expect that exports of Canadian beef to Japan can easily double in 2019 with this lower and more predictable tariff,” he said.

in the Senate. Finally, sincere thanks go to former International Trade Ministers François-Phillippe Champagne and Ed Fast for their key roles in negotiating the landmark trade agreement.

Oat markets continue to leap higher reaction is impossible to ignore. As a result, cash bids north of the border also trended steadily higher, with Saskatchewan growers now increasingly able to access pricing opportunities for milling quality oats at or above $3 per bushel. Milling oat cash bids in the southeast corner of Saskatchewan are trading as high as $3.20 a bushel picked up on farm, maybe $3.40 a bushel if you select deferred December delivery. In Manitoba, we have heard cash bids in the Red River Valley tapping up to $4 per bushel if you look way out to April to May delivery slots. Assuming one is in a position to do so, such
pricing opportunities should not be ignored. Prairie harvest conditions are expected to improve into the second half of October, meaning more supply potentially coming forward for commercials to work with. So when the immediate need to secure quality oats subsides, we’ll likely see some moderation of cash bids. Not feeling a bearish market threatens, but it’s just a need to reward a rally at solid prices relative to what we have seen in recent years. Our best guess is that quality loss on oats will not be as dire as originally feared, even if it means working with some mediocre to marginal quality. The colder weather has likely inhibited sprouting. It was probably a fortuitous decision many farmers made to hold off on swathing. Some yield will be lost to shattering certainly, but that’s a favourable alternative to having an oat crop lay in swath through three weeks of rain and/or snow. Statistics Canada believes harvested area of oats will decrease 6.2 per cent to 2.4 million acres this year relative to 2017. In addition, farmers across Canada anticipate that yields will fall from an average 93.1 bushels per acre in 2017 to 87.9 bushels per acre in 2018. As a result, production at the national level is expected to fall 11 per cent this year, down to 3.3 million tonnes. Also be aware that Scandinavian oat production this year was curtailed due to drought conditions, which likely trims their exportable surplus, much of which typically flows to the U.S. Further, in Australia, their crop situation continues to develop. Some recently rains, but with overall drought conditions are still intact and their exportable surplus will also erode. Mike Jubinville of Pro Farmer Canada offers information on commodity markets.

It’s interesting to watch Chicago oat futures surge over the past month. The nearby December contract is up over 60 cents per bushel in that time to new highs, and the highest for the mostactive contracts since July 2017. Along with stressed Canadian harvest conditions, market attention is also keying in on American oat inventory projections this marketing year. Projections could fall to their third smallest ever before the 2019 harvest. In recent years, gyrations in Chicago oat futures had limited direct correlation to Prairie cash oat pricing, but this kind of bullish market

New working groups for dairy sector Canada’s farmers and food businesses are vital to Canada’s prosperity, creating good jobs, growing the middle class, supporting rural communities, and bringing high-quality products to the tables of Canadian consumers. Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, Lawrence MacAulay, announced today new working groups comprised of dairy farmers and processors. While informal engagement has already begun with the dairy sector, the working groups bring together officials from Agriculture and AgriFood Canada (AAFC), representatives from national dairy organizations and associations, as well as regional representatives. The structure of the working groups is informed by consultations with the Dairy Farmers of Canada and the Dairy Processors Associa-
tion of Canada, and is comprised of two components: A working group that will collaborate to develop mitigation strategies to fully and fairly support farmers and processors to help them adjust to the short-term impacts of the United States-MexicoCanada Agreement (USMCA). It will also discuss support to reflect the impact of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for TransPacific Partnership (CPTPP); and, A separate working group that will chart a path forward to help the dairy sector innovate and remain an important source of jobs and economic growth for future generations. Supporting expertise to the working group may also include academic leaders, as well as industry and financial experts, as necessary. The federal government will also engage with provincial and territorial governments on an ongoing basis throughout the process.

SHEEP, GOAT AND HOG PRODUCERS!!

Cattle Alley Banter
VJV WESTLOCK HAS AN EXCLUSIVE MARKET ON TOP QUALITY EWE LAMBS, GOATS AND HOGS!
Gary Jarvis
General Manager, Vold Jones Vold Westlock, AB (Thurs, Nov 1, 2018) Considering all the mud, we had a decent run of cattle. The market was sluggish. I’m calling the market down a nickle on most classes of feeder cattle. The light good quality cattle were very aggressive, but the mid-weights are feeling the effects of the feedlots frustration of the waiting time to get the slaughter cattle shipped. Feedlots are filling up because of the backlog. The cow market still sucks! A number of cows are in the .80’s, but lots of pretty decent kill cows in the 70’s. On another note ... most of us are offspring of European immigrants and proud of it. When your parents or grandparents arrived on the Canadian shores, I don’t believe they were met with hand out over hand out. They had to learn the English language, get a job and start to make their way to a good life as Canadians with no help from the government. I look at what is happening today and I say we will end up with a whole bunch of lazy, untrained, illiterate welfare recipients! Why? Because they are being handed everything - - for nothing! This Liberal government is so bent on getting votes, it is handing out more and more “freebies”, only to win the immigrant vote. People say Pres. Trump is wrong, but all the while, the economy is so good, investment is booming and people are realizing it takes brains and guts to run a country. This is something the Prime Minister in Canada is lacking. Meanwhile, we pay with skyrocketing taxes and rising debt. I just realized something - - he is doing this because this is the way his life has been - handed everything he has on a silver platter!! Have a good week!
The demand for lamb, goat and pork is growing and the market is growing right along with it. VJV’s reputation throughout Western and Central Canada, along with its network of market facilities, uniquely positions them to put your livestock together with the feedlots, abattoirs and packing companies calling for lamb, goat and pork while assuring you of receiving top market value. If you have lambs, goats or hogs for sale, call us for an updated market report and to arrange delivery. VJV Westlock holds sheep, goat & hog sales at 11:00 a.m. on the 1st & 3rd Tuesday of each month!! Our next auction dates are November 6th, November 20th and December 4th Free feed and water upon delivery. Be sure your sheep are ear tagged before marketing.
Can’t Get Your Sheep or Goats to Us Yourself?
VJV Beaverlodge will be assembling sheep and goats on the Monday before each sale! Call Jason at 587-343-2162 today!! Contact us today for pre-listing or up-to-date market information.

Feed shortages lead to underweight cattle and lower prices
0% FINANCING OR CASH BACK! NOW THROUGH DECEMBER 31.
The end of 2018 is a perfect opportunity to save big. Take advantage of 0% FINANCING* or choose cash back on current-year New Holland tractors and equipment. Hurry in. It’s out with the old, in with the new during our Year-End Celebration. And it all ends December 31, 2018. Stop by today or visit nhoffers.com for details.
A dry Prairie growing season and feed shortages are causing more cattle to enter winter underweight, as well as a greater number to hit markets. The impact of dry summer weather and delayed harvest is showing up in cattle yards and auction markets. “In instances where pasture productivity was limited due to early turn out, limited precipitation, or expecting the pasture to carry more animals than it really should, cows will likely be thin, and calves may be lighter than expected,” says Dwayne Summach, Saskatchewan Agriculture’s livestock specialist. Thin cows impact winter feed needs “It can take an extra 1,400 pounds of hay for a thin cow to keep warm,” says Barry Yaremcio, Alberta Agriculture’s beef/forage specialist. “That’s roughly $140 per cow increase in feeding costs compared to an animal in good condition.” The amount of milk a thin cow can produce is also reduced, and its reproductive success can be 20 to 30 per cent lower when entering the breeding season. Online tools allow producers to score their herds’ body conditions and balance rations to achieve targeted gains. Maximizing feed To cope with poor condition cattle, Summach and Yaremcio recommend weaning calves now, as nutrient requirements for a dry cow are 25 per cent less than a lactating cow. After weaning, feed extra grain and better quality forage to allow for weight gain. Also, pregnancy check the herd and cull any open cows. “Getting the cows pregnancy checked early allows culling decisions to be made quickly, saving valuable feed resources to provide to the pregnant animals,” Summach explains. More feed grains Precipitation has stymied annual crop harvest operations and reduced quality grades, which could
increase feed grain availability. The amount entering Alberta’s feed chain, though, has been minimal so far, as many swaths are too wet to combine or covered in snow, Yaremcio says. Feed quality grain also can come with additional challenges like molds, and experts urge feed testing. Market impact Buyers know farmers are under pressure to sell, and that incoming high supply will reduce prices, Yaremcio says. “Cow prices are definitely lower. Prices are roughly $200 per head lower now than what was available two months ago, (and) roughly $1,000 per head lower than a year ago,” he explains. Thinner cows could mean additional discounts at market, adds Brian Perillat, senior market analyst of Canfax. He’s observed more calves - probably lighter weight - have moved earlier this fall. The next six weeks will provide a clearer indication of price direction there, Yaremcio adds. Perillat also notes tight feed supplies have slashed bred cow and bred heifer demand. The bottom line Farmers will need to adjust their cow numbers to match feed availability, but more animals for sale will pressure prices lower. Article by: Richard Kamchen

Gases in groundwater
Elgert says that water wells that “breathe” have been fatal in Alberta. “On a low pressure day, gases can come out of the well head that can contain very little oxygen. If the well head is inside a pump house, in the basement of a house - or even worse - in a pit, the oxygen in that enclosure can be displaced. It only takes a short time for a person in that enclosure to lose consciousness or even die if they breathe in this gas with little oxygen – even less time than if they try to hold their breath.” “If an older pressure tank or cistern is in the basement and is not vented to the outside, gases can collect in the basement,” he says. “However, modern pressure tanks do not have a relief valve, so this problem does not occur with them.” Another danger is when a combustible gas such as methane - is present. A strong enough
concentration could result in an explosion. Elgert explains how one well owner experienced this danger first-hand. “He was venting the gas out of a pressure tank inside a pump house because he thought the pump was introducing air into the water. He was near the pump when it kicked on, created a spark, ignited the gas, and blew up the pump house while he was still inside. He was fortunate it was such a short burn and he only sustained minor peeling of skin from his face after the incident.” Elgert adds that overpumping the well can make this problem worse especially when the water level is drawn below the top of the slots or holes in the casing where the water enters the well. “Other problems can occur on a high pressure day in winter,” notes Elgert. “Air can go down into the well, freeze the pitless adapter, and stop the water from pumping. Gases causing spurting from taps and loss of prime of the pump is another problem.”
As for solutions, Elgert offers these tips: Wells in pits should only be worked on by someone with confined space entry training. Well drillers use gas meters to determine if there is enough oxygen in the pit before entering. The meters also test for some other gases including combustible ones. Existing wells in pump houses or unsealed wells in basements should be capped properly and vented safely to the outside. Older style pressure tanks in basements that can vent off should be vented to the outside. Overpumping the well can intensify the problem. An assessment of the well can be done to determine a system that would reduce overpumping. Collect a sample with an appropriate method and send it to an accredited laboratory for analysis. Find more information about Gas in your Water Well, Dissolved Gases in Well Water and Water Wells that Breathe. To speak to a water specialist, contact the Alberta-Ag Info Centre at 310-FARM (3276).
R0011498989
Gases in water wells can cause some issues for people who rely on them for their homes and farms. Shawn Elgert, agricultural water engineer with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, outlines some of the problems and offers some solutions. Gases can occur naturally in water wells. The gases are dissolved in the water itself while under pressure and be released when pumped out of the well. “Sometimes people complain about the smell, but the gases you can’t smell may cause the worst problems,” says Elgert. “Odourless gases include carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrogen, and potential dangers may arise from these gases in the water.”

B.C. aims to protect agricultural land from mega-mansions, construction waste
EXT:png:END EXT
Canadian Press reports British Columbia has tabled legislation that it says will make clear that land in the Agricultural Land Reserve is for farming and ranching and not for dumping construction waste or building mega-mansions. Agriculture Minister Lana Popham says the amended land commission act proposes to strengthen the protection of agricultural land by clearly defining that all land in the reserve is subject to the same status. Under the current legislation passed by the former government, there are two zones of agricultural land with one land zone open for
some non-agricultural development. Popham says the amendments in a bill tabled Monday will eliminate the arbitrary two-zone division. She says the amendments also seek to prevent the building of huge homes on prime agricultural land by limiting new home sizes to less than 500 square metres on property in the land reserve. Popham adds the amendments also include increased penalties for dumping construction debris and other wastes or fill materials on agricultural land that can damage soil and valuable farmland.

Livestock producers receive tax relief for 2018
The Government of Canada has released a list of additional regions in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec and New Brunswick where livestock tax deferral has been authorized for 2018 due to dry conditions. On September 14, 2018, the Government announced the initial list of prescribed regions in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Quebec for livestock tax deferral purposes. Producers in those regions can request the tax deferral when filing their 2018 income
tax returns. “This past year, extreme weather conditions have caused feed shortfalls for Canada’s livestock producers in several provinces. The Livestock Tax Deferral Provision will help give producers the resources needed to help rebuild their herds and get back to business,” said Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Low moisture levels resulted in significant forage shortages for livestock producers in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec and New Brunswick in 2018. One option for producers is to reduce their breeding herd in order to manage feed supplies. In addition to the livestock tax deferral provision, producers have access to assistance through existing Canadian Agricultural Partnership Business Risk Management programs, which include AgriInsurance, AgriStability and AgriInvest.

Minimum wage and Alberta’s agri-food workers What could October’s minimum wage increase to $15 an hour mean for agri-food workers in Alberta? Jean Marie Uwizeyimana, agri-food statistician with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AF) examines the latest Statistics Canada numbers. “This Statscan data indicates that 14.1 per cent, or 267,900 Albertans, were earning less than $15 an hour in 2017,” says Uwizeyimana. “Those workers stand to benefit from the last month’s minimum wage increase. Alberta has the lowest percentage of its employees earning less than $15 an hour, followed by Saskatchewan at 18.6 per cent.” Alberta’s agri-food industry employed 75,100 people in 2017. “That number is comprised of 52,100 in primary agriculture and 23,000 in food and beverage manufacturing,” explains Uwizeyimana. “Out of this total, 37,600 people were self-employed, while the remainder were employees earning wages. This increase is likely to benefit workers on wages.” Uwizeyimana notes that in
2017, 14.4 per cent of employees - 5,400 people - in Alberta’s agrifood industry earned less than $15 an hour. “Specifically, that proportion was 22.8 per cent 3,600 people - in the primary agriculture industry and 8.3 per cent - 1,800 people - in the food and beverage manufacturing industry.” With 53.6 per cent - 73,700 people - Alberta’s accommodation and food services industry employed the highest percentage of employees earning less than $15 an hour in 2017,” explains Uwizeyimana. “That is followed by wholesale and retail trade - 30.3 per cent or 94,100 people - and information, culture and recreation - 23.5 per cent or 14,900 people. The province’s primary agriculture industry had the fourth highest percentage share of workers earning less than $15 an hour, while the food and beverage manufacturing industry ranked ninth.” For more information, contact Jean Marie Uwizeyimana at 780422-3099.

ON THE
OPEN ROAD R0011490554
Riding the roads and braving the weather Here in Northern Alberta we are experiencing some really odd weather. September was cold, rainy and snow filled. We got 6 inches of snow that stayed for days in mid September and it made for low attendance at our toy runs. In Lloydminster, Canada’s MOST Rider Friendly Community it was so cold for their toy run that attendance for the ride was down to 40 bikes when they would normally have over 100. The donations were not down, but many said, sorry, it’s too cold for this cat. The ride was meant to last three hours and visit some smaller communities. I myself only rode through town before my hands were so cold that I went back to Edge Harley-Davidson and turned in the bike. One half hour later, all of the riders were back it had started to snow.
And here we are in the beginning of November and NO SNOW. No one can go sledding but the bikes are still out. Sure the temperatures are cold, but if you have good heated gear, you can ride comfortably for hours! So, how does one take advantage of this unseasonable weather? Here in Canada we use Freedom Heated Clothing from a tiny little town called Esterhazy Saskatchewan. Her website is: heatedclothing.ca Janice has been helping riders extend their riding season for years now. She offers heated vests, heated jackets that have heated collars, gauntlets and heated chap liners. A rider herself, Janice decided this gear needed to become a part of every northern riders gear and the best part? If you also like winter activities, these garments can be used on your
sled or side by side. Yes, officially riding season is over, BUT you can still get in some wind therapy on two wheels by simply investing in some great heated gear. For more ideas on gifts for riders check out my Riders Gift Guide that comes out on November 12th…. Collie Corner By Carol Nelson
From clinic to home Going from a clinic to working at home can sometimes be a daunting task. At a clinic the situation is controlled thru corrals that promote quiet working of the stock, livestock that has been sorted and chosen for their quiet and forgiving nature while the dog learns to work in a satisfactory manner, and having constant instruction to keep dog and handler moving forward in a productive manner. Once the handler gets home and starts working they may find it difficult to reproduce the results they were having at the clinic. This will be a temporary setback until the handler gets pens, sheep etc. set up to create a good working situation. It takes a bit of tweaking to get good conditions but with a few adjustments it can be done. A small pen, with no square corners for the sheep to lodge in, keeps the livestock contained and allows the handler time to get into position for the first few sessions. The most important detail to remember is to keep between the dog and sheep until the dog is giving distance away from the sheep and is working quietly while circling the sheep. Once this happens then
the handler can start to back up and let the dog bring the sheep to the handler. Learning is often accomplished thru trial and error. Practicing what was learned at the clinic will take some time and effort as well as determination on the handlers part. Working through mistakes is all a part of the learning process. It is always a good idea to work through a few sessions at home and then go back for lessons as this will keep both dog and handler progressing. If bad habits are developed and allowed to continue it will create problems down the road that could hinder a dog and handler reaching their full potential. Instruction will help to keep everything on track and moving forward as it is often difficult to know what the next step towards progression is. Regular help is often the difference between the people who continue to work and train dogs and those who get discouraged and quit. If possible it is worth the time and commitment to have regular coaching for the first while when starting to train a working dog. Carol Nelson 250-772-5315 or text 250-263-4223

The effect of winter feeding systems: the study Cattle producers can overwinter their herd using various feeding systems, and each system can affect the land, the animals, and the producer’s bottom line. Paul Jungnitsch, greenhouse gas offset agrologist with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, explains his research that compared those different systems. “Yard feeding has been the traditional method of feeding cattle in the winter in the prairies,” says Jungnitsch. “Feed is hauled in for the winter, and manure is hauled out in the spring or fall. Recently, winter pasture feeding has become popular. Cattle are left out on the pasture, and the feeding is done there. Machinery use is reduced, partly because the cattle spread the manure themselves.”
out to be about 15 tons per acre at the same moisture level as the spread manure.”
fed November to March in the intensive drylot in the farm yard, with the same measurements taken.
Jungnitsch adds that a replicated site for spreading manure and compost was set up at the same time. All sites were sampled for background nutrient levels. Raw manure was then spread at 30 tons per acre while compost was spread at 10 tons per acre.
Jungnitsch found that nutrient retention of nitrogen and potassium was much better in winter pasture feeding compared to winter yard feeding. “One hundred and four lb. per acre of inorganic soil nitrogen was gained on the winterfeeding sites compared to the check, with areas ranging as high as 550 lb. per acre. No gain could be measured where manure or compost was spread.”
Sixty-four cattle were brought onto the pasture on November 22 after being weighed and condition scored. They were kept there until the end of March and were weighed each month. Feed use and the time and equipment used feeding were noted. Thirty-six cattle were also
Jungnitsch says that little work had been done comparing the effect that winter feeding on pasture has on soil nutrients as compared to spreading manure from a corral with a machine. “Since is it not recommended to spread manure in the winter, there was concern that wintering cattle on pasture would result in nutrient losses compared to yard wintering.” In the fall of 2003, two five acre winter feeding areas were laid out with electric fence in an old pasture of Russian wild-rye grass at the Western Beef Development Centre at Lanigan, Saskatchewan. Explains Jungnitsch, “Alternating hay and straw bales were set out in the west area, so the cattle could be winter fed by bale grazing. The east area was left empty in preparation for winter feeding with a bale processor. The area of the winter feeding areas was calculated to result in the cows applying 30 tons per acre of manure on the pasture over the winter. However, this turned

Using firewood this winter Planning on using wood as a heat source this winter? Toso Bozic, bioenergy and agroforestry specialist with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry explains what to keep in mind. “First off, the wood must be dry. You don’t want to use green wood,” says Bozic. “If your wood is already dry, you still need to keep it free of moisture. Green wood requires at least one summer to dry, and the time needed to do so depends on species, weather, and whether the wood has been split. For optimal firewood, the moisture content needs to be around 15 to 20 per cent.” “With some experience, it is relatively easy to tell if the wood is dry,” explains Bozic. “Green wood weighs more than dry. If cracks appear in the end of the wood, it is probably dry. If you hit two pieces of wood together, dry wood makes a different sound than green. Lastly, dry wood is darker than green wood.” Bozic offers a few tips for drying. “Keep the wood at least 8 to 10 inches above the ground. The drying site must have good air flow and low humidity, and don’t stack the wood against the wall or anything that could block the airflow. If you don’t have a firewood shed, you need to protect your firewood with a plastic, metal, or wood cover. Another option is to use a small kiln or dry unit.”
R0011628960
As for choosing a tree species for firewood, Bozic says that all species have about the same energy con-
tent per pound. “The main variation between different species is the tree density, which means they have different calorific values, or amounts of heat, per volume of wood. A cubic foot of air-dried white birch weighs about 16 kg, while the same volume of white spruce weighs about 11 kg. Therefore, you will need a larger volume of spruce to get the same weight and, the same heating value as birch.” Low density wood has a larger volume - creating transport, storage, and handling issues. “Coniferous species – larch, pine, and spruce - contain a higher amount of resins than hardwood species – birch, maple, poplar, willow, etc. These resins can create a problem with creosote buildup.” To avoid creosote buildup, wood needs enough oxygen to get hot enough to vaporize and burn completely. Explains Bozic, “Instead, the vapor condenses and creates the creosote. Creosote is not a problem with wood or wood moisture, but it is an issue with the burning appliance, such as a stove, operating without enough oxygen to burn the wood completely. Creosote is highly flammable and can create fire hazards in your house, so regular maintenance is necessary.” Bozic adds that it is vital to avoid bringing firewood from outside Alberta into the province to prevent the spread of insects and disease.
