Canadian bull power shines in the USA Kacie Albert and Ted Stovin PBR Canada The wave of bull power from North of the 49th is due large in part to the numerous sales of Canadian bucking bulls to United Statesbased stock contractors during the past three years. Within that time window, six Canadian bulls have made eight appearances in the Championship Round of the PBR World Finals, headlined by Seven Dust, a staple in the final round all three seasons. The other five outs are represented by: Sheep Creek and Kill the Lights in 2015; Nailed and Hey Jack in 2016; and Canadian Mist in 2017. Sheep Creek was raised by Tyler Thomson in Black Diamond, Alberta and bucked under the Big Stone Rodeo brand before heading south when they were purchased by Gene Owen. Following his 2015 PBR World Finals debut, where he bucked off both Dave Mason, 3.61 seconds/42.75 points, and Ben Jones, 4.47 seconds/44.75 points, the bovine athlete bucked at nine elite tour events, selected for four championship rounds, and was ridden just four times. In 2017, he re-

turned to Canada where he is now under the Vold Rodeo Co. banner. Also at the 2015 PBR World Finals, where he was a perfect 2-for-2 in dispatching J.W. Harris, 1.21 seconds/44.75 points, and Kaique Pacheco, 7.65 seconds, Kill the Lights, hailed from Todd Braithwaite and Braithwaite Ranches before he was purchased by Owen. In 2016, he bucked at four elite tour events, ridden just once by Pacheco in Thackerville, Oklahoma, where the duo combined for 87.25 points. Another acquisition by Owen, the late Hey Jack traced his roots to the Wild Hoggs with ranches in Nanton and Marwayne, Alberta. Before relocating south of the border, the bovine athlete was named both the 2015 PBR Canada Bull of the Year and 2015 PBR Canada Bull of the Finals. After making his elite tour debut in Billings, Montana in 2016, with a 1.7-second buckoff of Wallace de Oliveira, the bull concluded his career with a 17-5 record on the premier series.

All about 4H BC

The 4-H program provides young people with an opportunity to learn how to become productive, selfassured adults who can make their community and country a good place in which

to live. This is fostered through project and program work, experiences with their 4-H club members and leaders and their participation in district, regional and even provincial programs.

The goal of the 4-H program is youth development. The objectives of 4-H clubs are knowledge, leadership, citizenship and personal development. 4-H is an organi-

zation dedicated to young people. The purpose of the 4-H program is to prepare girls and boys for their future as adult citizens. 4-H stands for head, heart, hands and

health. The 4-H pledge describes the significance of the four H’s: I pledge: My HEAD to clearer thinking, My HEART to greater loyalty, My HANDS to larger service, My HEALTH to better living, For my Club, my Community and My Country. The philosophy of the 4-H program is explained by the 4-H motto: Learn to do by Doing.

Canadian Angus Association honours Ken and Rebecca Mackenzie for 50 years of membership

Ken and Rebecca Mackenzie are pioneers for the Angus breed. Working along with his four brothers, Ted, Mark, Don and Rodney, the family operation Mackenzie Brothers was the first to import Red Angus genetics--including one herd sire, one cow/calf pair, and two bred heifers--into Canada. As we celebrate 50 years of Red Angus in our herdbook and as Ken and Rebecca prepare for their final bull sale before transitioning their herd to their grandson, we are honoured to recognize their lifetime of commitment to Canadian Angus.

producers, they will stay involved in the business. The Canadian Angus Association offers sincere congratulations to Ken and Rebecca Mackenzie. It is because of the dedication of individuals and families like him that the agriculture industry continues to be an important sector in our nation today. The Mackenzie’s final bull sale takes place March 13 at Dawson Creek, BC.

Ken’s grandfather established the Mackenzie farmstead in 1898. The original herd was made up of Shorthorn cattle during their time of popularity in Canada. When that popularity began to decline, the Mackenzie family decided to focus on and retain genetics that supported solid red.

The Canadian Angus Association instituted a long-term recognition award program in 1998 to honour individuals and families that have demonstrated a long-term commitment to the Angus breed in Canada by maintaining a continuous membership in the Association for at least 50 years. In 2011, the award program expanded to recognize families with 75 and 100 continuous years of membership.

Ken purchased his first cows while attending university. Like many producers today, he also worked off the farm. Ken taught school and his brother Rodney helped a great deal showing cattle. One of their biggest highlights was showing a Chevron cow that placed 21 times and won 17 grand champion titles. Ken and Rebecca’s grandson Braydon Gough has kept some of this bloodline in the herd. Retirement is taking Ken and Rebecca to Golden, BC. Like many other Angus

The Canadian Angus Association is Canada’s largest purebred beef breed organization. The Association represents more than 2,000 members across Canada for the purposes of registering and recording the pedigrees of purebred Angus cattle in the closed HerdBook and promoting the breed across Canada. The member-approved mandate is to maintain breed registry, breed purity and provide services that enhance the growth and position of the Angus breed.

Genetic Evaluation Definitions

What does that mean? EPD (Expected Progeny Differences) are expressions of the relative genetic merit of beef cattle for various traits. EPDs are used to compare the predicted progeny performance between two bulls (or females) within a breed, regardless of age or herd location. EPDs are expressed in the actual units of measure for a given trait. Interim EPDs (indicated as PE+) are calculated using a calf’s sire's and dam’s National EPDs plus the calf’s own performance data. Possible Change Table: EPDs are predictions of an animal's breeding value for a given trait. As with any prediction, there is a margin of error, or possible change, associated with an EPD. When the accuracy is low, this margin for error is high. As more information (i.e. progeny data) becomes available, the margin of error becomes smaller. Percentile Table: used to quickly rank a sire or dam within the breed for a given trait. Active Sires/Dams: animals that have at least one progeny with a weaning weight recorded in the past two years. Black/Red Carrier: an animal whose coat colour is black, but carries the recessive gene for red coat colour. ---------------------------------(ACC) Accuracy: the reliability that can be placed on the EPD. An accuracy of close to 1.0 indicates higher reliability. Accuracy is impacted by the number of progeny and ancestral records included in the analysis.

progeny’s performance for carcass marbling scores. This EPD incorporates both ultrasound and carcass data. The higher the EPD the more intramuscular fat expected in the rib eye of a sire’s calves. (MILK) Milk EPD: is an indicator of milking ability in daughters. It represents the differences in weaning weights of calves due to the amount of milk produced by their mothers. It is expressed in pounds of calf weaned. The higher the EPD the more weaning pounds a sires daughters will add to her calves via milk. (PE) Parental Average EPD: indicated as PE, is an average of a calf’s sire's and dam’s National EPDs. These have minimal accuracy as they do not incorporate the calf’s own performance.

(SC) Scrotal Circumference EPD: expressed in centimetres, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires. Scrotal Circumference is an indicator of both growth and male fertility. Larger scrotal size is related to increased sperm production and semen quality, and in daughters' younger age to puberty, younger age to calving and higher pregnancy rate.

(STAY) Stayability EPD: the percent probability of daughters staying in production to at least 6 years of age. Stayability EPDs for bulls are the prediction of the genetic differences between their daughters probability of staying in production in a herd to at least the age of 6 years. Given the primary emphasis on pregnancy in most herds, stayability is a measure of sustained fertility. The higher the EPD the more likely a sire's daughter will remain in production in a herd past 6 years.

(WW) Weaning Weight EPD: expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire's ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Weaning weight (CW) Carcass Weight EPD: expressed in lbs, is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning this EPD predicts differences in the average (205 days of age). The calf's growth during this hot carcass weight in progeny. This EPD is period is influenced by its own ability to grow calculated using birth weight, weaning weight plus its mother's maternal abilities. The higher and yearling weight EPDs as well as any carcass the EPD, the heavier, on average, the calves of a sire will be at weaning. data available.

(BW) Birth Weight EPD: expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire's ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. (CED) Calving Ease Direct EPD: the average difference in ease with which a sire's calves will be born when he is bred to first calf heifers. The higher the number the more probability that his calves will be born unassisted. (CEM) Calving Ease Maternal EPD: is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater probability of unassisted births in firstcalf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire's daughters will calve as firstcalf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires.

(FAT) Fat/Back Fat EPD: expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in back fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of other sires. The higher the EPD the more back fat expected on a sires calves. (HPG) Heifer Pregnancy EPD: the percent probability in a bull’s daughters’ ability to conceive and calve as two year olds. Just like the stayability EPD, heifer pregnancy EPDs are expressed in terms of a percentage difference. For example, two heifer pregnancy EPDs, 5 and 10, differ by 5%. Daughters of the bull with the EPD of 10 are 5% more likely to conceive than daughters of the other bull. (MARB) Marbling EPD: a prediction of future

(YW) Yearling Weight EPD: expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire's ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. The higher the EPD, the heavier, on average, the calves of a sire will be at yearling. (YG) Yield Grade EPD: expressed in USDA yield grade score, this EPD predicts differences in carcass yield grade score to be expected from progeny. This EPD is a ratio or summary of the rib eye area and fat EPDs. The lower the EPD, the closer to USDA grade 1 the sire’s calves will grade (grade 1, having the biggest rib eye area to lowest fat ratio, is the preferred grade).
