A handful of break-ins early last week has business owners and municipalities scratching their heads. Early in the morning hours last Tuesday in Pouce Coupe, Stitchables, the spa, and the post office were all broken into. Oddly enough, aside from the damage, nothing appeared to be taken — no computers or office supplies were taken from the post office, for instance. “When I talked to the officer, they were saying it was unbelievable how many break-ins there were that morning,” says Sukrit Parmar, who owns the Stitchables building. “They said Pouce is very crime free.” What was the motivation? Parmar suggests perhaps it was just a “joyride.” Others in Pouce suggest the break-ins were a diversion for a bigger break-in in Dawson Creek. And they weren’t the only ones to report a break-in in that timeframe. On the edge of Dawson Creek, PrairieCoast Equipment reported that

Tuesday that three John Deere Gators had been stolen overnight. That makes seven stolen gators since August 8, says PrairieCoast Dawson Creek branch manager Clint Switzer. He is skeptical of the diversion theory, however. “I don’t think think they’re always the most intelligent. [. . .] Like in this case, they rammed through the front gate, and bent our gate all off,” he says. “That yellow gate out in the front is not even locked, so they’re running into an unlocked gate.” And an increase in such activity, is something Switzer has noticed over the past few years. “We’ve noticed a real increase in theft activity over the last three to four years,” he says. “We also deal with a lot of rural farmers, and we’re hearing the same thing from the farmers, we’re hearing the same thing from the acreage owners, as well as business owners who are being broken into.

Agronomists and accountants agree: Clearfield canola is a good call.
Maximize your crop and your ROI. No matter how you slice it, Clearfield® canola just makes sense. For the agronomic-minded, its new hybrids provide top-performing traits and yields compared to other canola systems. The Clearfield Production System for canola is also the only system that delivers one-pass control of flushing weeds, including volunteer canola. If number-crunching is more your style, you’ll appreciate the lucrative specialty grain contract opportunities and a discount of $1.50 per acre on Ares® herbicide. Any way you look at it, the choice is clear. Learn more at clearfieldcanola.ca or call 1-866-420-2673. Always read and follow label directions. Breakfast Brief “Whatever course you have chosen for yourself, it will not be a chore but an adventure if you bring to it a sense of the glory of striving.” David Sarnoff (American Businessman) CANOLA PRICES ON THE EDGE OF GLORY? Grain markets this morning are mixed with soybean and canola prices up, corn and wheat prices ever so slightly in the red. Harvest 2018 has started to pick back up in most places across North America, which is putting pressure on grain markets again. The long-range forecast from the NOAA suggests most of the United States will see normal temperatures this winter, but average to below-average precipitation. The only anomaly is in the South, which should get more rain (and possibly snow) than usual this winter.
Long Live the Wheat King? Last week for our GrainCents Spring Wheat readers, we discussed and answered some of the questions about this year’s spring wheat quality. This is also a question for Russian wheat production. While protein in Russian wheat is up ever so slightly, yields are certainly down, which is easily attributed to the drier growing conditions this past year in many areas across Russia. Across the entire country, wheat yields are pegged 12% lower year-over-year at a hair under 43 bushels per acre. The worst decline year-over-year was seen in Volga Valley, down 29%. Central and Southern federal districts saw wheat yield drops of 14% and 13% year-over-year, respectively. Siberia’s average wheat yields are seen up 7.5% from 2017, which is a bit ironic given the latest harvest conditions, but they did have better growing conditions than that seen in the Western Russia regions. While the USDA’s official forecast is for 70 MMT of total wheat production, the USDA’s attaché in Moscow is currently forecasting 68.5 MMT. Similarly, the attaché in Russia is estimating total wheat exports in 2018/19 from Russia at 33.4 MMT, below the most recent official forecast from the USDA of 35 MMT. Keep in mind that last year, Russia exported more than 41 MMT of wheat. The drop in wheat exports is not only reflective of the smaller crop, but also the aim of the Russian government to alleviate fears over food price inflation. The government intervention is something that we’ll be watching closely going forward as; we noted a few weeks ago just the rumors of some slowing of exports by the government helped rally spring wheat prices a bit. While they’re 2018/19 wheat crop has certainly been smaller, all signs are pointing to Russian wheat growers increasing their acreage, with winter wheat seeding already underway. Where Do Canola Prices Go Now? Worth noting, as well, are the bigger oilseed crops in the Black Sea, which can certainly have an impact on canola prices. I’ve been getting a lot of questions about where canola prices are going. There are some out there who think that the rally of canola prices seen earlier in October was an opportunity missed, mainly because of the large U.S. soybean carryout and there’s still a lot of canola left to harvest. It can be suggested that the market has priced in the size of both crops already, as it usually does by this time. However, also worth noting is the historical tendency of canola prices to rally in November. It could also be suggested that canola prices have been subdued thanks to the weaker performance of Canadian exports. They’re tracking nearly 16% behind last year’s pace with just 1.73 MMT shipped out through Week 11 of the 2018/19 crop. Canola prices remain pressured with slower exports Participate in, comment on, and share our Twitter poll here as to where you think canola prices could top out before Christmas. Have a great weekend!

We talked mostly about crop progress in Wednesday’s FarmLead Breakfast Brief, but we also noted a few cargoes of soybeans headed to China. Worth noting is the International Grains Council is expecting China’s full 2017/18 crop year soybean imports to come in at 93.5 MMT. This would be down 3% year-over-year and slightly below the current official forecast of 94 MMT. Soybean crush margins have been positive since August, and available stocks at the port are sitting around 8.57 MMT, down slightly from last week’s record of 9 MMT. While the IGC notes that U.S. soybean shipments to China have dropped considerably, larger soybean exporting campaigns from Brazil, Uruguay, and even Russia have offset the fall. Last September, we noted the rise of soybean production in Russia, amidst their wheat production prowess.
Canada and BC support agriculture in B.C.’s Indigenous communities
Supporting the planning of farming projects builds food security, which is of benefit to Indigenous people around the province. Indigenous communities, Tribal Councils, and Economic Development Corporations are eligible to apply for this support through the B.C. Indigenous Agriculture Development Program, and access funding provided by the governments of Canada and British Columbia. The program criteria and funding available includes: Providing successful applicants up to $5,000 of services from a qualified business consultant to complete a feasibility assessment of agricultural development options and business planning functions related to agriculture. The assessments could include everything from reviewing the current agricultural resource base, to providing economic analysis of the agricultural options, with the end goal of identifying opportunities with the highest likelihood to succeed. Once the important first step of identifying the best options is completed, funding of up to $10,000 will be available to work with a qualified business consultant to conduct agriculture financial and business planning. The plans could include business and marketing strategies, costs of production and financial analysis, operational planning as well as support from the consultant and technical training to help build the skills and capacity of the successful applicant to implement
“Our Government is very pleased to partner with British Columbia to support the B.C. Indigenous Agriculture Development Program. Canada’s agriculture and agri-food sector has incredible potential for growth, and this new program will help Indigenous farmers and communities take important steps towards creating well-paying jobs and long-term economic development,” slammed Lawrence MacAulay, federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food. “I’ve been so excited to meet with First Nation leaders and community members across B.C. and to learn how they want to develop agriculture and food production. This program will make an important contribution to that effort as it helps First Nations in B.C. plan and develop farming projects that will build food security and create local jobs. It is my hope this program will act as a catalyst for new agriculture operations in Indigenous communities throughout our province,” agreedLana Popham, B.C.’s Minister of Agriculture.

At a time when hog producers expected to profit from their labours, a rising supply of American pork and tariffs on U.S. pork exports saw Canadian hog prices drop as much as $55 per animal in June. The Canadian Pork Council estimates the sudden decline resulted in losses of $125 million for the Canadian hog industry between June and September. “It’s a cyclical business,” says Rick Bergmann, CPC chair and a hog producer in Manitoba. “We typically see a downward market late fall, early winter. We do what we can to prepare for it.” Eric Olson, a farm management consultant in Winnipeg with MNP Ltd., says hog producers are already good at managing risk. “Over the last 15 years, the hog industry has seen more than one significant downturn, so hog producers have had to become leaner and meaner than other industries,” Olson says. Moving forward There are steps producers can take to manage their risk. For the short term, the CPC encourages producers to continue to focus on biosecurity. “PED and African Swine Fever would have a devastating affect at a time it’s really unwelcome,” says
Gary Stordy, CPC’s director of government and corporate affairs. “We don’t want those diseases.” The CPC also recommends producers ensure their costs are in line with production. “A couple of years ago, producers became more efficient by watching energy consumption and feed rations and managing expenses,” Stordy says. “Now is the time to really look at that again.” Olson recommends producers take a step back to look at the market and understand why prices are down, what factors led to the price drop and what changes in the market will bring them back up. “This helps producers assess how long the downturn is going to be, and how long they may have to operate on their reserves,” says Olson, who also recommends producers hold back on capital investments. “During a downturn is the time to reserve cash and resources.” Producers should also talk to their financial advisors for advice. Farm Credit Canada, for example, announced it is working with its customers to find solutions, including considering deferral of principal payments and/or other loan payment schedule amendments to reduce the financial pressure on producers impacted by the price drop.
All prices are in Canadian dollars per metric tonne Market Comments - Values for all ingredients remained largely unchanged over the past two weeks. Short-term corn demand has increased as the new crop supply is still largely in the field and ethanol plants are ramping up production. Stalled harvesting activities throughout the Prairies over the past two weeks have also created some concerns over short term feed barley and wheat supplies, particularly in Saskatchewan and Alberta. Longer term prospects for all feed grain prices, however, remain bearish as the near record US crop of corn and soybeans begin to influence the marketplace. Feed pea prices remained unchanged, trading for $260/T in Manitoba, $245/T in Saskatchewan, and $250/T in Alberta. * Models have been updated to reflect the latest nutrient compositions of feed ingredients, which is done periodically. Feed Pea / Faba Bean Benchmark - The feed pea/faba bean feed benchmarks are intended to be used as a pricing reference. This benchmark provides a consistent and unbiased estimate of the feeding value of peas and low tannin faba beans in the three regions shown. Feed peas and faba beans will trade at various differentials to the benchmark based on local supply/demand, quality differences and other contract terms. Feed Pea / Faba Bean Feed Benchmark Calculation - The feed pea/faba bean feed benchmarks are an estimate of the feeding value of dry peas/low tannin faba beans in Western Canada, based on the value of competing feed ingredients in swine rations. Bi-weekly, tradable prices for the major feed ingredients are collected for the three regions shown above. These prices are then entered into a least cost feed formulation that is typical for grower-finisher swine in Western Canada. A feeding value is then derived for feed peas/faba beans based on their nutritional characteristics and the prices of the competing feed ingredients. The least cost feed formulation was developed in consultation with the Prairie Swine Centre. In addition to the feed ingredients shown above, the feed formulation also includes canola oil, synthetic lysine, synthetic methionine, synthetic threonine, synthetic tryptophan, mono-dicalcium phosphate, limestone, salt, vitamins and minerals.

Experts are always in the stands!
I had the pleasure this spring of going to Vienna Austria to do some teaching and horsing around. I also travelled around a bit to see the country. One of the stops I very much wanted to make was the Spanish Riding School of Vienna. The school has been in existence for 430 years. It is, of course, steeped in tradition. The Lipizzan stallions are bred and used for the school in Austria. Individuals, if I remember correctly, are able to apply to the school between ages of 18 and 23 to become riders. It is expected that if chosen you would make your life career to stay a rider until retirement. Up until recently it was men only but now it is open to females, currently it has two female riders and more women applications than men. The Lipizzans have a breeding facility in one part of the country, the school in Vienna in the city and summer pastures for the horses in the Alps. I went to each location and tried to take in as much of the culture and traditions as possible. All the stallions they use must meet certain standards of trainability and conformation. The riders must be of certain size and shape as well. The one stallion that I visited was retired and will be 40 years old this year. Many of the buildings in the area are over 1000 years old. Canada isn’t that old! The stallions that do not meet the standards are trained and sold. The areas where the horses live are beautiful. All the mares and foals are handled often and at a
young age. Unfortunately, I’ve forgotten how many years the riders train before being allowed to be in the show but it was many years with a very set training system and program. The riders go through rigorous training, grooming and cleaning their own horses and the stalls. They have saddles that have been used for years and fitted to each individual horse. When the horses are brought home from the mountains in the fall they are led from the summer pastures through the countryside and towns back to their winter home. All the towns along the way have festivals and parties in celebration of the Lipizzans coming home. Individuals from all over the world travel specifically to Vienna, many just to tour the Spanish Riding School and see the horses. I had wanted for many years to enjoy whatever there was to see and learn at the school as well. I purchased the best tickets available so I was right at ground level with the horses and riders. The riders came in to the arena and gave an amazing show that I’m sure they did for thousands of people every year to the same music. I watched each rider and horse intently, trying to learn whatever I could as well as enjoy all their dedication to the craft. There were so many things to appreciate - the exact spacing of the horses, carrying collection for 20 minutes, the straightness of their lines, the timing required. Just seeing all the stallions was amazing.
Unfortunately, it was difficult to really concentrate and enjoy all of the beauty as there was so much talk around me about the horses and riders, “that guy doesn’t smile so he must hate his job”, “I saw that horse move his tail”, “that horse doesn’t look happy”, “ that rider needs to lose some weight”, “that horse missed the lead”. On and on went the comments. I just thought how sad people feel the need to go to some function and try to find what they assume is a flaw in the riders or horses. I never heard one positive comment, which is so unfortunate. It’s been my experience that the people who “can do” what is happening in the ring know how much work goes into what they’ve accomplished and don’t have negative things to say or such judgment. I think we can do better, look for the positive, even if we do attend some not so great show. Or, maybe all the experts are in the stands. I don’t think so. This is not one isolated incident I’ve heard the same type of comments at shows, competitions, clinics and so on, in Canada and other places, we really can do better. Negative Nancy’s are not fun to be around. Blowing out someone else’s candle doesn’t make ours glow any better. Enjoy the show,Glenn Stewart

Proper vaccination care and administration Written by Dr. Mike Ross DVM When we spend valuable time and money on vaccinating our cattle to prevent important diseases, we should ensure that the vaccine is handled and administered correctly. This will ensure the vaccine is effective and safe for your animals as well as protecting your investment. Vaccines come in two types: modified live and killed. They are both vulnerable to destruction by improper handling or stale dating. It is important to read and follow the label very carefully. Make sure your vaccines are not expired – they will have an expiry date on them. It is also a good idea to record the lot number and expiry information in your records in case there are any problems. In veterinary clinics vaccines are stored in large coolers that are monitored daily for correct temperature. Vaccines can be susceptible to changes in temperature and UV exposure. Allowing vaccines to freeze can increase the risk of adverse vaccine reactions. Vaccines should be taken home directly and put into your refrigerator, without warming, freezing or exposure to sunlight. It is always a good idea to make the veterinary clinic your last stop before heading home. On the day of processing (administering the vaccines) try to take only the vaccine that will be used that day out to the site. Store them in a cooler to prevent overheating or freezing and only take out or mix one bottle at time. A thermometer placed in the cooler to monitor temperature of the vaccines is a good idea. While the day is progressing you can monitor the vaccines to make sure they do not get overheated or frozen. Try to keep them between 2 degrees Celsius and 7 degrees Celsius. Keep them out of sunlight whenever possible. Once vaccine is mixed, it is only good for a couple of hours. Do not keep any vaccine that has been mixed but isn’t used. Always use a new needle when removing vaccine from the bottle - if you use a dirty needle it can introduce bacteria to the vaccine. Make sure automatic syringes are clean and sterilized before every use. A dirty syringe can not only introduce abscess forming bacteria, but they can cause vaccines to be ineffective. Take apart syringes after every day of use, remove seals and rubber components, and wash in hot water. Do not use soap or disinfectants as they may leave residues that will destroy the vaccine the next time you use them. A general procedure for cleaning automatic syringes is:
1. Clean syringes in a dust free, clean area. Wash hands and ensure countertop is sanitized. 2. Wash using hot water, distilled if possible, at a temperature of just below boiling (180F, 85C) 3. Wash external parts and surfaces of syringes. 4. Disassemble syringes. 5. Wash syringe parts with clean hot tap water (remember do not wash the parts with soap or disinfectant). 6. Boil all metal or glass syringe parts in boiling de-ionized or distilled water for five minutes. 7. Reassemble while hot. 8. Use a small amount of CLEAN glycerin to lubricate rubbers or seals. 9. After assembly is completed rinse the internal parts three to five times with water greater than 180o F (85C). 10. Allow the syringe to cool for 10 minutes before using. 11. If storing the syringe, place the syringe in a new zip-lock bag and store the syringe in a freezer. 12. Prior to using the syringe after storage, rinse the internal syringe with water greater than 180o F (85C). You can also boil two cups of water in microwave and pull boiled water into syringe three to five times and let syringe cool for five to 10 minutes before using. Consult your veterinarian on the proper gauge and length of the needle to be used for the vaccine. Always, always use a sharp needle. Change needles every 10 to 15 head, and anytime the needle tip appears burred or gets bumped accidentally on the chute. Never straighten a bent needle. Inject everything in the neck, in the triangular part which is above the spine, ahead of the shoulder, and below the crest. This prevents damage to valuable cuts of meat, and allows for better absorption or processing of the product by the smaller, more numerous muscle groups. Try not to inject through a soiled area of skin. Avoid giving subcutaneous injections behind the shoulder in the heart- girth area. This is where the “fly shaker” muscle is located so you actually are giving an intramuscular injection. By following these recommendations, your vaccines will be effective with the least chance of injection site reactions.

Get the witches stirring this cauldron of curry
1 tablespoon whole coriander seeds, toasted · 2 teaspoons whole cumin seeds, toasted · 1 teaspoon whole black peppercorns, toasted · 1 teaspoon coarse salt Morton Iodized Salt 26 oz · 3 serrano chiles, sliced · 1/2 cup fresh cilantro · 2 stalks fresh lemongrass, trimmed and chopped (1/2 cup) · 8 garlic cloves, minced (1/4 cup) · 2 scallions, chopped (1/4 cup) · 2 tablespoons chopped peeled fresh ginger · 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice · 1 tablespoon finely grated lime zest (from 2 limes · 2 ounces spinach (1 cup) · 1 can (14 ounces) unsweetened regular coconut milk · 1 can (14 ounces) unsweetened light coconut milk · 1 medium zucchini, quartered lengthwise
Need a New Water Line?
and sliced 1 inch thick (2 1/4 cups) · 12 ounces boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1-inch pieces · 12 ounces boneless, skinless chicken thighs, cut into 1-inch pieces · Coarse salt and freshly ground pepper · 3/4 cup fresh basil · Serrano chiles, thinly sliced, for garnish · Squeamish Squash with Rice · Lime wedges, for serving DIRECTIONS 1. 1. Make the curry paste: Grind coriander, cumin, peppercorns, and salt with a mortar and pestle, or with the bottom of a heavy skillet. Add remaining ingredients, and grind until a paste forms. (Curry paste can be refrigerated for up to 2 weeks or frozen for up to 3 months.) 2. 2. Make the stew: Puree 5 tablespoons curry paste, the spinach, and 1 cup regular coconut milk in a blender until smooth. Reserve remaining curry paste for another use. 3. 3. Bring remaining regular coconut milk and the light coconut milk to a boil in a medium Dutch oven or heavy stockpot. Reduce heat, stir
in curry-spinach mixture, and simmer for 5 minutes. Add zucchini, and cook until slightly tender, about 5 minutes. Add chicken, and season with salt and pepper. Cook until zucchini is tender and chicken is cooked through, about 5 minutes. Add basil, and garnish with serrano chiles. Serve with rice and lime wedges. The curry paste can be made in advance, minimizing last-minute fuss, and the stew cooks quickly. Using a combination of regular coconut milk and light coconut milk reduces the calories.

Herbicide carryover still a possibility A wet Prairie fall may help dilute herbicide in the ground, but there’s still a chance this year’s dry summer and current cool soil temperatures could result in herbicide carryover into next year. A dry 2018 growing season and current cool soil conditions in Western Canada could lead to herbicide carryover to 2019. “The precipitation will help, but it has come late in the season when the soil is cool,” says Jeff Schoenau, an agrologist and University of Saskatchewan soil fertility professor. “Herbicide decomposition/dissipation in the soil is reduced when the soil is dry and cold.” Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba experienced an unusually cool, wet 2018 harvest following a parched growing season. Alberta Agriculture crop specialist Harry Brook adds warmth and moisture help herbicide chemicals break down faster, but single digit temperatures have stymied the process. The recent precipitation will likely do more to further leech herbicides into the soil. “Anything that causes water movement will help dilute the herbicide, but if the soils are cold or frozen, then degradation is pretty low, because the microbes aren’t active,” explains Robert Gulden, a professor at the University of Manitoba’s plant science department. Impact Carryover of a compound usually affects some crops more than others – or not at all – and farmers next year can select a different crop to grow that’s not susceptible to any

potential compounds that may still be present, Schoenau says. Planting a susceptible crop could result in plant injury, possibly causing a yield hit, says Gulden. Farmers may also want to change what they spray next year to avoid stacking effects, Brooks says. “One should be aware of potential additive effects from small amounts of different herbicides of the same group or mode of action that may still be present,” Schoenau points out. Tips Growers should pay particular attention to re-cropping guidelines and restrictions provided by the product manufacturer, Schoenau says. Also useful is keeping good records of application rates and dates, and precipitation received on fields. As well, Schoenau recommends consulting provincial crop protection guides, which have sections with information on soil residual herbicides. All three experts also support a bioassay prior to seeding. “A bioassay where plants are grown on a test strip, or soil collected from representative treated and non-treated areas of a field, can be of assistance where no information exists,” Schoenau says. “When in doubt, consult the manufacturer.” Bottom line With higher risks of herbicide carryover this year, farmers are urged to closely follow product recropping guidelines and conduct soil bioassays. Grant program supports health and safety on farms
On Dec. 1, the Occupational Health and Safety Code (OHS Code) will apply to farms and ranches that employ waged, non-family workers. This means Alberta farm and ranch workers will have similar health and safety protections as workers in other industries and other parts of Canada. “Together with industry, we can continue to promote and deliver programs that support sustainable growth in the sector and foster a culture of safety on the farm. The Farm Health and Safety Producer Grant Program is just one way our government continues to support producers and ensure safe and healthy workplaces across the province,” said Oneil Carlier, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry. “Albertans value the contributions of Alberta’s farm and ranch communities and care about the health and
safety of their workers. This program will help farm and ranch employers continue their work to create healthy and safe workplaces and comply with the OHS Code,” sanctioned Christina Gray, Minister of Labour. “Through grants like this, government is helping to support a culture of safety on the farm. AgSafe is positioned to be a champion for agriculture in Alberta and a vital partner in advancing the implementation of farm safety,” noted Kent Erickson, chair, AgSafe Alberta Farm Health and Safety Producer Grant Program Applications open Oct. 15, 2018 and the program runs until March 2021. Farms and ranches with waged, non-family workers and a WCB account may apply for the grant. The grant covers up to 50 per cent of eligible safety expenses to a maximum of $5,000 per year or $10,000 over the life of the program per eligible applicant. Expenses going back to Jan. 1, 2018 are eligible under the program. Eligible expenses (with receipts) include things like: First aid kits, fire extinguishers and warning signage, and so much more.
R0011498980 R0011498987
A new farm and ranch safety grant launches Oct. 15 to help eligible agriculture employers comply with new occupational health and safety requirements. The grant will help offset some of the costs employers may incur in complying with the new regulations. Up to $6 million is available through the program during the next three years.

Collie Corner By Carol Nelson
Thoughts on the fall stock dog clinic Fall Stock Dog Clinic Mother nature smiled on those of us who worked dogs for the week-end. With warm weather and sunshine, it was a pleasure to be outdoors rather than a torture test to see who was the hardiest! A wide variety of dogs and handlers from near and far distances made the weekend interesting for all. Our farthest north handler was from Whitehorse with a Coolie dog {originally a border collie and dingo cross} and the most southern handler was from Quesnel. The rest of the handlers were within about a 4-hour distance. An assortment of border collies as well as a few heeler-collie crosses attended with a Kelpie rounding out the versatile group of dogs. With competent and focused handlers, this bunch of
canines looked really well by the end of the weekend. The fantastic part of the week-end is that we discovered new handlers who live quite locally. This is great as it indicates there is a growing interest for working stock dogs in this area. An unusual and nice addition to the clinic was Bob Keirs, of Silver Valley, who participated in the clinic as well as kept a hot pot of coffee brewing and provided some nice vitals with campfire cooking. Bannock made on the fire was a hit at the pot luck supper. Thank you to Bob for providing this added touch. A network of friends and acquaintances was started that will hopefully continue to grow into the future through the mutual desire of handlers who want to have a trained working dog.

Canola market rises amid harvest delays Since bottoming in mid-September, ICE canola futures have trended gradually higher. The nearby November canola futures contract flirted with overhead chart resistance at $500 per tonne for a number of trading sessions, finally moving above that mark earlier this week. Slow harvest progress across much of Western Canada continues to be price supportive for the canola market. Alberta’s latest crop report placed the canola harvest there at just over 20 per cent combined as of Oct. 2, only four per centage points higher than the previous week and still well behind the normal harvest pace. The canola market will continue to derive underlying price support from the difficult harvest conditions, with about half of the overall Prairie crop still caught in the field. Choppy trading But trading has been choppy this week ahead of the U.S. Department of Agriculture supply/demand report coming out Oct. 11. The report is expected to show heavy soybean supplies. Chart-wise, the short-term canola price trend remains higher with no immediate signal of a reversal lower. The nearby November canola contract is now trading above resistance at $500 per tonne, so the door is open to next level chart resistance at $507 per tonne. That would create the “swing target,” using the late September gain as measuring stick. After that, we have the August highs in the $510 to $512 per tonne area. Soyoil strengths canola market It’s interesting to note Chicago soyoil futures have also lifted off contract lows established in mid-September. That strength in soyoil lent support to the canola market. The extent and impulsiveness of the past couple weeks’ gain is impressive, breaking a major chart
downtrend and identifying the Sept. 19 low (US27.15 cents per pound) as the end to a long-term Elliott sequence on price charts. That said, major bear trends such we have seen over the past year in soyoil do not just turn on a dime and keep going. Corrections can and should be expected. Still, I hope we are seeing an encouraging longer-term development emerging in soyoil that would lend further support to our canola market. Wrap There is a sense the delayed harvest slowed farmer deliveries - certainly in the northern areas of the Prairies – and, in turn, thinned available canola supply moving through the commercial pipeline. As such, futures contract spreads (that is, November to January) are tightening modestly and cash basis is gradually improving. That’s all in an effort to draw increased farmer selling, notably in the southern areas where harvest is more advanced. As a result, we see Prairie cash bids trending gradually higher, to the point where bids as high as $11 per bushel for deferred December to January delivery are being in south-central Saskatchewan. Most growers exercised patience before advancing cash sales this fall, with prices now edging higher. But remember, the upside price momentum will be hampered by a U.S. soybean market contending with record large 2018 crop prospects amid ongoing trade tensions with the world’s primary importer - China. Bottom line While a difficult harvest season remains a challenge for growers, price gains near-term can and will remain limited by large global soybean crop prospects. THE BIG BEND A history of the families that opened up the Blueberry Mountain area
A little bit about John Zuk
John Zuk was born in the Ukraine on October 9th, 1897. He was a young boy of fifteen when captured by the Austrian Army, and became a high ranking soldier. He later came home after serving his time, and was then captured by the Polish Army. In this Army he served beside his brother Nick, and saw Nick shot off his horse but couldn’t help because of heavy fighting. Later he got married, and in 1927 with the help of relatives from Lamont area, he and his wife and daughter Barbara departed for Canada. He worked for farmers in that area and around Warspite and Athabasca. At that time another daughter Mary was born. He filed for a homestead in the Meanook area, but while building a shack he realized how many rocks there were, so leaving the family behind in the winter of 1929 he headed for good farming land he had heard of in the Peace River

area. How he happened to land in the Spirit River area is unknown, but he filed and received his homestead in the Yellow Creek area NE 4-80-6-W.6 He then went back for his family and worked that winter till February. By that time he had enough money to bring his family to Spirit River by train from Athabasca. They got a ride by wagon to their homestead. When they arrived, they had nothing but a few clothes, an axe and a saw, plus two little girls, so a shack was built in a hurry. From that day on it was a struggle for survival, by clearing land for himself and at the same time working for other established farmers in the Blueberry Mtn. area. He worked for Mr. Houston and a few others in Blueberry Mtn., and for Mr. Bilawchuk and Mr. Krishka in what is now called Deep Valley Area, and also for the Kaplans of Spirit River. At that time a day’s work was worth fifty cents, or a bushel of grain, the use of a horse or plow, or maybe some meat, whatever you needed or whatever you managed to get from your employer. This meant hard labour, like brushing with an axe or stooking long hours: it was no eight hour day or five day week. Shortly after they were settled, they were lucky enough to have a nice neighbor move onto the next quarter to them. This was Mr. Steve Baduik and family, and that was a Godsend for the Zuks. The Baduiks moved here from Whitbum and they were more established, so when Zuks needed a horse or plow or whatever, they always had help from the Baduiks. That made their

life a little happier, safer, and most encouraging. The Kapral family were neighbors as well and also very kind people. Mr. Kapral and Mr. Zuk got together every fall and winter, and used to beat the freight back to Lamont and St. Michael to work for the rich farmers. To explain the phrase “beat the freight” is when you sneak in the box car, flat deck, cattle car, or even between the cars, cold as ever. You made sure the engineer didn’t see you or he would throw you off. Many people froze to death by beating the freight, and some were even killed by falling off. During this time John Zuk’s wife died giving birth to another daughter, and the infant died shortly after. At that time there was no doctor or nurse, only the much appreciated help of the neighboring women, especially the Kaprals and Baduiks. It wasn’t long before John remarried, looking for survival as well as raising his two young daughters the best way he knew how. In the spring of 1938 a son Harry was born. That was a happy occasion, as finally he had his boy. However, shortly afterwards the baby was quite sick for a while. One particular time they thought the baby was dying, so the oldest girl Barbara ran all the way to the Blueberry Mountain store for the nurse. When the nurse saw the baby she asked for a tub of snow, into which she put the baby, and a few seconds later he was crying. The nurse said a few minutes longer and he would have died. The nurse’s name is unknown, but I believe this was in the fall of 1938. If this lady reads this book “Thank You” from that boy.

Are China-U.S. trade tensions boosting Canadian pork and soybeans exports? the same time in 2017. Trade tensions between Mexico and the U.S. did not impact U.S. export volumes much but had a negative impact on export prices. China-U.S. trade tensions present opportunities to Canadian exporters Soybeans China purchased Canadian soybeans in MayJuly 2018, a period when historically Canada does not export soybeans to China. In 2017, 35% of Canadian soybean exports went to China, and they increased 382% in June-July 2018. However, as Canadian exports go up, more U.S. soybeans were shipped to Canada; imports in July 2018 increased 50% from July 2017. Demand for canola also jumped in China - Canadian exports in MayJuly were 25% above 2017. Pork Canadian pork exports to Mexico have increased 19% in 2018 versus 2017, while pork exports to China are down 17%. The outbreak of
African swine fever may further amplify trade disruptions in the soybean and pork markets. A decline in the Chinese sow herd can lead to more exports and a weaker demand for soybeans. Monitor export trends to understand the longterm outlook for commodity markets In the short-term, global tensions shift trade patterns and prices fall. Despite additional Canadian export sales, the price impact usually outweighs any trade benefit. The long-term impact can be more meaningful. Continued tensions could open opportunities and lead to a stronger demand for Canadian commodities. Check out the 2018 annual trade ranking report being released in November to learn about volatility in commodity prices and its influence on Canadian exports of agriculture and food products. China-U.S. trade tensions have disrupted trade flows and increased price volatility in many agricultural markets. The November 2018 soybean futures price has fallen approximately 20% from US $10.50 at the end of May to around US $8.50 per bushel. Lean hog futures have also seen large declines in recent months, with the October 2018 contract reaching lows of US$ 47 per cwt in August. It has since partially recovered with the conclusion of NAFTA renegotiations and the outbreak of African Swine fever in China. The movements in commodity prices are nothing exceptional considering the importance of China in ag markets: China is the largest soybean and pork buyer in the world. Export patterns have shifted, creating gains or increasing costs for importers and exporters. Where does Canada stand? U.S. export patterns for soybeans and pork are disrupted Soybeans U.S. exports of soybeans to China in the current marketing year have declined 22%. Exports in July 2018 dropped 50% from July 2017 levels following the Chinese import tariff. And U.S. soybean export commitments to China have declined 83% in the 2018/19 marketing year (starting Sept 1st). U.S. soybeans have increased to Europe, Mexico, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Iran, and Southeast Asia. China has been purchasing close to 80% of Brazilian soybean exports over the summer, projected to result in an increase of 10% from 2017. Efforts to reduce China’s reliance on U.S. soybeans include reducing domestic Chinese soybean stocks and adjusting hog rations to use either fewer soybeans or use alternative proteins like canola and peas. Pork The volume and value of U.S. pork exports to China remained relatively flat during the first four months of 2018 over 2017, however export volume and value declined approximately 40% during the May 2018-July 2018 period relative to

Just another ride of a lifetime. Feels familiar
In 2005 Wayne Brand, a Marathon Ontario rider, crashed his motorcycle with his step daughter on the back. She suffered some pretty bad injuries and went through some surgeries, but for the most part, she’s doing well these days. Wayne on the other hand struggles with partial paralysis, short term memory loss (although his long term memory is crystal clear) and was moved into long term care in the Marathon Hospital a number of years ago. I was contacted in mid August by an organization called Wish of A Lifetime Canada. They have an American parent office in Colorado for their US wishes and a Canadian branch in Toronto for Canadian wishes. They had been Google searching motorcycling to see if they could find a partner that could help make a Senior’s wish come true. (Wish of A Lifetime has a group of employees who support making wishes for Seniors com true.) Our seniors are more and more isolated, often times they have little or no family close by, and therefore very little socialization. The mission of Wish of A Lifetime is to enrich the lives of seniors by reconnecting them with others of like mind and their own passions, helping get them out of the house, out of the hospital and helping them regain that sense of purpose, of life force, helping to enjoy life again. Shannon, the co-ordinator I was to end up working with explained Wayne Brand’s story to me and asked if I thought I could help them. I said “No, I don’t think I can, I know I can.”
I asked Shannon to give me 4 hours, and after a number of phone calls, I had John and Jean Rose of the Marathon Legion (both avid riders) willing to help us in the task of hosting a poker run. Turns out that Wayne is a member of their Legion. They also found a gent with a side car, and because of an engine failure, Excalibur Motorcycle Works Ltd. in Thunder Bay sent a complete stranger out on his Ural side car to ensure Wayne would go to his party in style! I also had the help, guidance and support of Ted, Jessica and the whole crew at Thunder Bay HarleyDavidson. I went back to Shannon with what had been accomplished in the course of an afternoon and she was thrilled. Over the next few weeks, Jean and John Rose of the Marathon Legion worked their CANS off, getting the word out to the regional riders, all of the Legions on the route and getting a penny auction and BBQ set up for the day of the event, September 22nd, 2018. I created posters, reached out to riders and Thunder Bay HarleyDavidson reached out and printed posters. I flew into Thunder Bay on the 21st of September and friends from the Superior Riders, Dave and Violet Alderdice who live in Kakabeka Falls just outside of T-Bay, agreed to pick me up, put me up and put up with me for the next three days! It was so good to reconnect with these two, I gotta tell you I love them big time! They are just the sweetest, kindest people in the world. Anyway, on Friday I was appar-
ently supposed to join the HOG chapter for lunch, but I misread the email and thought it was for dinner time, so we headed in to pick up the motorcycle I was to be riding and I found out I had let the HOG Chapter down. I felt like crap. Ted and his girlfriend decided we’d make up for the missed meal by going out to a local hotel for a meal with myself and Dave and Vi. I also interviewed Katie and Ted for Facebook Live. In spite of the cold weather, and it was cold 4 degrees, we still had 10 bikes show. Ted the owner decided that with all his obligations, he’d be better of driving the chase vehicle and he let me ride his Road Glide, a 2018 with 5,800 K on it...OH I WANT ONE....so bad....what a gorgeous machine. Anyway, we headed out knowing that we were stopping every hour and we road literally, one hour at a time. When we got into Nipigon, our first stop, the smell of home made perogies fried onions was the smell that assailed us. I had to buy a dozen to take back to Dave and Vi’s to add to dinner on Sunday! The Nipigon Legion pulled out all the stops! Donuts, coffee and hugs, lots of hugs. It was cold and over cast, but I think we all felt the same, it was worth it to be cold, we were looking forward to making a man’s day...We pulled into Schriber to be met by at least another 15 bikes! Again, the Legion was warm and inviting with free coffee! The pack headed out to the Marathon Hospital, there Jean and John had arranged for a side car to meet us there and we planned on bring-
ing Wayne to the Marathon Legion in the side car. Once at the Legion, there were BBQ’ed burgers and hot dogs, French fries and beverages. All free to the rider. I interviewed John and Jean and some of the riders who participated and then I got to interview Wayne and Barb. His words say it best – “Listening to those bikes coming up and then the stop right in front of the hospital, my heart started pounding, I got weak in the knees, it’s been just a super day.” I wanted to stay overnight as had been originally planned and take in the band and the rest of the festivities, but the forecast for rain and howling winds was even worse for Sunday than they were for Saturday night and so back the Thunder Bay we went, and freeze, OMG I haven’t been that cold and wet in a long time. Thank goodness for the Hot Shots which I shared freely. We made it back in one piece, soaked through the rain gear, and frozen to the bone, but we did it. It was such an honour to be a part of Wayne’s wish coming true and I just hope and pray that now that the community knows this man misses them, that they remember to stop in and spend some time with him. I can’t thank Thunder Bay HarleyDavidson: Ted, Jessica, Jim, Katie and the gang, the great folks from the Marathon Legion: Jean and John for all their hard work to bring the other Legions on board and to set up the BBQ, the Penny Auction etc... Cutting firewood While hard work, preparing firewood for winter use can be very rewarding for those who use wood as a source of main or supplemental home heating. “Depending on the cost of current competitive energy sources mainly natural gas - firewood can provide some savings if you are using dry wood and an efficient wood stove,” says Toso Bozic, bioenergy and agroforestry specialist with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. For those not in the commercial firewood business, there are few things to consider - including firewood source, harvesting, drying/ seasoning, storage, and use. “Even if you decide to just cut trees for your own use, you must be prepared for hard work that will last several hours. You will be working outside in colder weather conditions, and you must have equipment for cutting, splitting and transporting firewood,” adds Bozic. Bozic says that the first trees to choose are those that have already fallen, are laying on the ground, and are very dry. “You will probably need to remove the tree limbs before taking them to where you want cut them for firewood. If you are planning to make a trail through the trees, the ones you cut for the trail are the next in line to use for firewood. Your last choice are trees that are healthy and green. There is no need to use those trees for firewood unless you have to. Another source of firewood could be slabs and scrap lumber from local sawmills or even wood from landfill facilities if they are clean and free of contamination. Never use pressure treated wood or any other chemically contaminated wood such as plywood, oriental strand board (OSB), or rotten wood.” Safety is the most important factor when harvesting trees. “If you have never used a chainsaw, split wood, or used other harvesting equipment, I would strongly suggest taking a safety course,” says Bozic.
“As using a chainsaw and working in a forest is very dangerous work, you can always hire a professional timber harvester to do the job for you. Using a chainsaw is a major cause of accidents among professional loggers as well as hobby loggers.” Safety steps when cutting trees include assessing the hazards, identifying where the tree will fall, cutting and clearing around the tree, determining an escape route, deciding what cuts to make, and always remembering to look up. All equipment used must be set up properly and will often require more than one person to operate. “Once you cut those trees, you will need to transport them to an area where you will cut the trees to firewood length,” says Bozic. “Please keep your logs off the ground as they can get dirty or freeze in winter time.” When splitting by hand, it is not uncommon to run across twisted pieces of wood that defy splitting. Bozic says to consider leaving these pieces as they are also hard to split by maul. “There are many different types of mechanical log splitters – run with electricity, gasoline, or powered by a tractor or skids. Depending how much firewood you may use annually, a mechanical log splitter could be the most important piece of equipment that you need to purchase. Don’t buy larger and bigger equipment then you really need. Firewood processors are for people who are in firewood as a business.” Bozic adds that it is vital to avoid bringing firewood from outside Alberta into the province to prevent the spread of insects and disease.
