Beef Congress takes over DC It was heaven on earth for cowfolk and farmhands alike as the 20th annual Peace Country Beef Congress took over the Lakota Agriplex. It was the third year in a row the event was held in Dawson Creek. Show coordinator Liz Gustafson, in her second year in the role, said there is a great response from the people coming to the show. The good weather Dawson Creek had last weekend resulted in a lot more people coming out. A couple highlights of the show were a huge open heifer class, the largest Gustafson has ever seen, as well as a jackpot class, voted on by social media users, and a day full of 4H competitions and programs.
Tony Mitchell, emcee for the show and a Beef Congress board member, said the reason for the success of the show this year was the dedication of the people left in the cow business. “What the exhibitors here are learning is that these guys
are looking for credibility, warranty, reliability, and are putting their cattle on display with that in mind. That’s what’s making the integrity of this show that much more awesome.” sports@dcdn.ca
Our cows can't read...
...but they bought the ranch
The list of real cow outfits in the bull business gets real short... real fast. 1000 mother cows, 400 sale bulls, 8 breed lines... nearly 12,000 bulls sold in 49 consistent consecutive bull sales...our cows bought the ranch. Solid, methodical and tenacious, we've used "old school" genetics, sound breeding principles and the "eye of a cowman" to develop eight different bull lines.
Today when you are bull shopping, you are flooded with numbers, many meaningless... you can't decide what is most important. We give you the simple important "real world" data that makes us both money. The auction mart doesn't ask you to send in a list of your EPDs. He buys your calves because they're "big stout hairy calves" that look the part and because of your good reputation. Keep it simple, cull the open ones, the problem ones and the ugly ones and you will make as much progress as is possible. A well-designed cow operation is very profitable at today’s price levels. Survive and prosper by remembering that a cow is a “low tech machine”. She hates diesel fuel, technology and expensive feed, she harvests grass, stores solar energy and turns it all into high quality protein. Her value to the world can only increase. Our only customers are Canada's commercial cowmen large and small. They buy our bulls because they're good quality, all of them, well culled, they sire the calves the order buyers keep talking about. Our bulls are older summer born twos (22-26 months when you need them), old enough to be tough and
not give trouble. Our bulls can all be left with us till spring, you don't want new bulls around till you need them, so let us look after them. Our bulls are all delivered absolutely free in Western Canada and cost shared in the East. Our bulls can be purchased sight unseen, in fact about half always are. We help select your bulls and they're guaranteed to be what you want... "true satisfaction on arrival". Our customers trust and confidence in us make it all possible. Our bulls are affordable and most all sell to solid commercial cattlemen. Our bulls are guaranteed like no others... you'll have a bull to breed your cows no matter what... hard to get better than that! As sale time approaches, you can view all our bulls on video on our website or we'll send you your very own DVD and Bull Book and you can show the neighbors. In fact, it's probably easier and simpler to buy our bulls than buying bulls locally. You get great service, the best guarantee, lots of selection and your calves will be sired by notionally known bulls. It all helps you to get them sold! Our customers like the fact that all our cattle are managed and fed just like most all commercial cattle. This year call me for your bulls. *free DVD *Free Bull Book * Free Delivery "Great Bulls" Call Today. Mac & Pat

Trask champ once again Shannon Trask was all smiles after the first day of the 20th annual Peace Country Beef Congress Jan. 5. Trask, who owns the Rafter SJ Angus ranch in Montney, was named the 2018 Grand Champion Open Heifer. She said this her fourth year attending the Beef Congress show, and has won in past years. Trask was also set to show her three bull pen, as well as compete in the cattlemen’s choice bull category as well. Trask loved the opportunity to
compete and to win, and especially likes how the show is in the Peace Region. “It’s awesome, really nice to have this kind of a show this close to home. We’re calving at home right now, so we can’t afford to go too far away so this works perfectly,” Trask said. Rafter SJ Angus has 100 registered cattle, with some commercial cattle as well. sports@dcdn.ca

When we think about what’s under our feet, what comes to mind? Dirt? Asphalt? Soil? It has been said that the soil beneath our feet is far more than just dirt, but it supports and drives all of life on earth. So when we think about how to manage production on our farms and ranches, our soil should be the first thing that comes to mind, a living, breathing thing! Soil is not an industrial commodity, and if not taken care of, it can be “used up.” Soil is an ecosystem that we can learn about and work with to have healthy and productive land with minimal inputs. This sparks the question of what does it mean to think of our soil as dynamic and alive? How do we take care of our soil? How do we know if our soil is healthy? Will our traditional soil tests tell us anything? Then comes the dollar questions, how does soil health affect farm and ranch profitability? Will managing our operations to improve soil health cost us money or make us more money? We are gearing up to answer these question. Over the past five years, soil
Market Comments - Prices for all grains remained unchanged across the Prairies on slow trading over the holiday season. Corn DDGS continue to trade at elevated prices and are being removed from diets due to lack of competitiveness with other high protein ingredient alternatives. Soybean meal prices fell by $25/T over the past two weeks based on sluggish markets and a sharp increase in the value of the Canadian dollar. Canola meal meanwhile decreased by $5-10/T. Field peas traded in the $235-240/T range in Alberta and Saskatchewan while faba beans commanded prices of $240/T and $255/T in Saskatchewan and Manitoba respectively. AB: $261 SK: $283 MB: $256 * Models have been updated to reflect the latest nutrient compositions of feed ingredients, which is done periodically.
health has been a major topic for much of PCBFA’s work, and is the most requested topic for workshops and information from PCBFA’s membership of over 200 producers. In response to this, we are pleased to launch a series of workshops and seminars: PCBFA’s 2018 Soil Health Series. PCBFA’s 2018 Soil Health Series will be a series of workshops, seminars and field days that will address questions about soil health and shed new light on the most important resource on our farms: our soil. We will be bringing world class speakers in to share their knowledge, as well as sharing the soil health research PCBFA has been doing right at home, on Peace Country farms and ranches with local producers. A Bit of Insight on Soil Health Soil health can be described as the ‘continued capacity of soil to function as a vital living system, within ecosystem and land-use boundaries, to sustain biological productivity, promote the quality of air and water environments, and maintain plant, animal and human health.”* Soil health focuses on looking at soil interactions and the biology in the soil, something that has often been overlooked in the
Part 1
Feed Pea / Faba Bean Benchmark - The feed pea/faba bean feed benchmarks are intended to be used as a pricing reference. This benchmark provides a consistent and unbiased estimate of the feeding value of peas and low tannin faba beans in the three regions shown. Feed peas and faba beans will trade at various differentials to the benchmark based on local supply/demand, quality differences and other contract terms. Feed Pea / Faba Bean Feed Benchmark Calculation - The feed pea/faba bean feed benchmarks are an estimate of the feeding value of dry peas/low tannin faba beans in Western Canada, based on the value of competing feed ingredients in swine rations. Bi-weekly, tradable prices for the major feed ingredients are collected for the three regions shown above. These prices are then entered into a least cost feed formulation that is typical for grower-finisher swine in Western Canada. A feeding value is then derived for feed peas/ faba beans based on their nutritional characteristics and the prices of the competing feed ingredients. The least cost feed formulation was developed in consultation with the Prairie Swine Centre. In addition to the feed ingredients shown above, the feed formulation also includes canola oil, synthetic lysine, synthetic methionine, synthetic threonine, synthetic tryptophan, mono-dicalcium phosphate, limestone, salt, vitamins and minerals.

The Northern Horizon, January 19, 2018 past few decades when we look at our soil. We have done a great job of looking at the chemical and physical properties, but have we forgotten about the biology? To have healthy soil that is resilient, selfregulating and productive, we must consider the chemical, physical and biological components, as shown in the diagram.

Dropping in on Worsley Fabrication & Welding
Built locally by Peace Carpentry, Abram’s new 3600 square foot shop (along with attached office and upstairs storage area) has allowed him to move his total opera-
tion indoors. From engineering to framing, from cutting to rolling, and finishing to painting the new shop enables Abram, along with welder/ fabricators David Peters and Peter Martens, to work without having to worry about the weather conditions. Specializing in hopper bottoms, grain bins, steel bin floors and rig mats, Worsley Fabrication can also handle custom fabrication jobs like truck decks and feeder bins while being available to local farmers and
ranchers who may have a welding fabrication or repair project. They are also a good source of welding wire and bolts of all sizes.
is setting up Worsley Fabrication & Welding to grow with the area’s demands; adding newer or larger fabricating equipment and increasing his array of services like on-site project construction, picker service and project delivery and set-up.
Abram runs a very community conscious business, utilizing local contractors like Rustbusters for project painting and working with local welder Abe Zacharias of Sunnyside Welding to cover smaller welding jobs like feeder bins and cattle panels.
Do you have a welding project kicking around the back of your head? Give Abram and the guys at Worsley Fabrication & Welding a call. They appear to be ready for almost anything.

All about horsemanship in Brazil There is a breed of horses called Lusitanos. Many people have heard about them but many have not. According to the archives, they are said to be one of the oldest breeds on the planet. The horses were in Portugal and Spain, ridden only by nobility and used for wars. In between the wars they would use them for bull fighting to keep them fit and ready in case another war broke out. During one of the wars the breeding stock was in danger of being killed by the enemy so the owners made a deal to bring many to Brazil for safety. An agreement was made with some of the ranchers boarding the horses to keep some of them as trade for their protection. As the story goes some other Lusitanos got “away” or went “missing” when the owners came back for their horses. As a result Brazil is home to many Lusitanos. The largest Lusitano ranch is in Brazil, 600 head of horses. I had the pleasure of riding about 100 different Lusitanos in Brazil at various ranches. My first trip was about 10 years ago and I have been going back ever since. This November, ten of us will be heading back to enjoy the beauty of Brazil and the magnificent Lusitanos and the friendly people. On my first visit I toured five Lusitano ranches and rode as many horses at each ranch as I could. The ranches offered amazing hospitality, hot appetizers, drinks and music. Each afternoon we were at a different, absolutely amazing
ranch. The horses were all washed, braided and polished to a shine. The trainers would demonstrate the horses then ask if anyone would like to ride one. I don’t think I ever said no; I rode as many as I could. My eyes were once again opened to horses and the horse world. I had never sat on horses with such natural talent and athleticism and I have never witnessed, before or since, such fancy and beautiful ranches. I’ve told many people over the years that I could never have imagined, no matter how far I stretched it, ranches as fancy as the ones I experienced. The trainers and handlers of the horses were dressed in their best clothes and not a speck of hay, straw or dirt on them. The horses were equally as clean and groomed. They were very proud of their jobs, their horses, their ranches. The sidewalks, roads, stalls, lawns, and everything were kept neat and tidy. Some of the stalls or buildings the horses lived in were three stories high and looked like homes. The reason I was invited to go to Brazil was to do a colt starting demonstration for the Lusitano Breeders. I’m sure I learned more from them and their horses than I was able to teach them. One of the most interesting things I learned was that the horses had been taught incredible shoulder movements. At first I wasn’t sure what was happening when the horses’ shoulder jumped to the right and I would end up with a left lead. By acci-
dent, I would hit a button and get a lead change. After realizing what was happening, I saw for the first time how much movement shoulders could have. When I got back home I went to work and got all my horses moving their shoulders much better. Lusitanos by genetics are very elevated in their movements and cantering on the spot is quite easy for them. After riding horse after horse and feeling how elevated they were I tried to access as much of that in my quarter horses as I could. By the time you read this, I will have been to Brazil and back again with more adventures and learning experiences. I don’t know what is to come but I look forward to it with much enthusiasm. On Jan 20th another group of us will be headed to Costa Rica for a horseback holiday on the beaches. In May I will be in Austria enjoying that amazing country. Then at the end of July another group is headed into the mountains for our annual “High and Wild” trip. Another trip to Brazil is also planned for November 2018! Whatever your passion is do it the best you can and you never know where you will find yourself. Glenn Stewart travels internationally conducting clinics and horsemanship demonstrations. The 2018 Clinic season will include, Austria, Costa Rica, Brazil, United States and throughout Canada. Presenting at The Mane Event in Red Deer & The Mane Event in Chilliwack. Glenn offers year round Horsemanship Courses at his home base in Fort St. John, British Columbia. The Horse Ranch is currently accepting bookings for Front Row Seating, Summer Courses, High & Wild and Brazil 2018. New regulations on antimicrobial use in animals Health Canada is in the process of changing the regulations on the use of antimicrobials in animals. Over the last decade, there has been more focus on cooperation between human health care professionals and veterinarians and more understanding on how the two impact each other and the environment. One Health is “the collaborative effort of multiple disciplines – working locally, nationally and globally – to attain optimal health for people, animals and the environment”. One of the major concerns in human health (and in animal health) is the increasing problems with antibiotic resistant bacteria. These bacteria are becoming more and more difficult to treat with antibiotics. There is some concern that inappropriate use of antibiotics in animals, may play a role in the development of these resistant bacteria. The new regulations are intended to promote the responsible use of medically important antimicrobials in animals. The first rule change came into effect in November 2017 and involved restricting the importation of certain drugs for food producing animals or animals intended to be consumed as food (including horses). The second rule change will be implemented in 2018. Over the course of the upcoming year, all medically important antimicrobials and medicated feed are going to be put on a prescription
drug list and as such are going to require a veterinary prescription. Up until now there have been certain antimicrobials (such as penicillin and oxytetracycline) that have been available for purchase at retail stores (such as feed and tack stores, Peavey Mart, Coop, etc). As these new rules come into effect, these products will no longer be available at these lay outlets and will only be available with a veterinary prescription. Any antibiotics that are in feed will also require veterinary prescriptions. Veterinarians are very tightly regulated by their regulatory bodies on the requirement for
a valid veterinarian- client-patient relationship (VCPR) before they may prescribe medication. A VCPR is a working connection and interaction between the veterinarian, the client and an animal or group of animals. As veterinarian’s we are obligated to assume the responsibility for making clinical judgements on the health of the animal and the need for medical treatment, and in doing so we must have sufficient knowledge of the animal(s) to initiate at least a general or preliminary diagnosis. We also have to be available for a follow up evaluation if there is treatment failure or an adverse reaction. Along with this there are several other obligations we have once we establish a VCPR. Clients have to agree to follow the veterinarian’s instructions if they wish to purchase medication from a veterinary clinic. Failure of a veterinarian to ensure an appropriate VCPR exists prior to selling medication, can result in fines or loss of license. For those producers that already have a good working relationship with a veterinarian, there won’t be a big impact. However for those that haven’t established relationships with a veterinarian, these rule changes may have more of an impact. We are recommending that animal owners plan ahead and find out from their local veterinarians what is required to establish a VCPR. More information on these changes are available on the Government of Canada website.

Hythe: wide open senior living Open for business a skipjump away – halfway between Dawson Creek and Grande Prairie is the Hythe Pioneer Home –an 86 unit senior lodge. Care, navigation, and support is provided by collaboration with existing community resources; which include 24 /7 Home Care resources, involvement with family and provision of Lodge services (housekeeping, emergency response, food services, evening and night staffing). Hythe is a rural lodge and as a rule, there isn’t a waitlist for housing and because of this, providing real housing options for families and seniors in the Peace Region looking for a solution. “People get to know each other here,” says CAO Dalvin Napen. This includes general staff, families, Home Care staff, professionals, other resources, and the general public. Interactions are the key and care is the result. Resident Christine Braun says staff care. “They really do care and they don’t pretend. There is so much to do. Flowers in the courtyard, and the food –from eggs benedict to cheesecake; it really is fantastic.” Christine also says it’s important for people to know that there is a guest suite that family can use. “My kids use it when they come Prince George, McKenzie and all over.” Amenities within the lodge include a library, smoking room, chapel,
the courtyards with flowers, outside planters, a medical clinic (three physicians) and the pharmacy. Mel Bowman (from Whitewood, Saskatchewan) says tt’s a great place to live. “Lots of fun, games, music, and reading; I love the music and the food is better than going out to restaurants, it feels like a home not a lodge. It is great.” Resident Melvin Heijari likes to focus on algebra. “It keeps the brain going, if reading is a steady 40 mph, then algebra is going 100 mph.” The Hythe & District Pioneer Homes Advisory committee is a nonprofit seniors housing group providing lodge services for more than 40 years and 23 years as a Housing Management body. It is an example of social infrastructure for housing and care in Alberta that is duplicated in many rural and urban communities in the province. Hythe’s newest project is the 11 million dollar, 48 unit “Pioneer Place”. This facility will provide supportive living care housing for seniors struggling with memory care and who need a safe, secure environment for wellness. The general public, families and seniors who are looking for housing and care solutions are encouraged to phone 780-356-3077 to arrange tours or to stop by when passing through Hythe, AB. editor@dcdn.ca 46843

GAME ON WITH THE BX. How do we know Kubota tractors are tough? Because they were built to take on winter jobs in Canada. The BX Series comes with 18 to 25.5 horsepower so you’ll have more than enough power to load and dump snow when temperatures drop. You’ll also have plenty of muscle to plow, sweep and blow through mountains of snow all season long. Suddenly, winter doesn’t seem so intimidating, does it?

Building trade, growth and market access Agriculture and Forestry Minister Oneil Carlier reaffirmed Alberta’s commitment to open markets and the modernization of NAFTA when he met with Canadian and U.S. agricultural leaders in Kansas City Jan. 5 - 7. The annual Legislative Agriculture Chairs (LAC) Summit brought together provincial agriculture ministers and U.S. state legislators to examine issues that affect the North American agriculture sector including trade, legislation and policy. “Developing and maintaining trade relationships is vital to the growth and success of agriculture in Alberta. The
U.S. export market is worth $4 billion to Alberta’s producers, and free trade has helped create a system that benefits farmers in both our countries. We must continue to connect, consider and discuss both the diversity of our perspectives and our shared goals.” Oneil Carlier, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry The summit agenda also includes discussions on rural development, housing and schooling, local food systems, water quality, infrastructure, and technology, research and the rural economy.
Beef supplies up; strong demand forecasted The 2017 cattle market can be summarized as having larger cattle numbers, more beef production and higher prices. Throw in good profitability through the supply chain, and it is certainly a good news story.
In the U.S., the larger production has been met with increased exports, and not only have the volume of exports increased, the price has also increased, which has been very supportive to the North American cattle and beef markets.
The overall market tone has been positive, and the Canadian cattle market has performed very well relative to the United States market. Alberta cull-cow prices have been stronger than the U.S. virtually all year, and despite the fact that western Canadian feed costs have risen dramatically relative to the U.S., there have been very few feeder exports, and even imports of U.S. feeder cattle. This shift in feeder trade points to a very competitive Canadian feeder market as prices have also been premium to the U.S.
The Canadian cow herd remained relatively flat around 3.8 million beef cows for the last four years. Although the herd has not grown, however beef production in 2018 could increase for the third consecutive year as more cattle are fed and processed in Canada. The Canadian cow herd is not expected to show much growth, as current cow markets are near steady with a year ago, and heifer retention has shown only a marginal increase.
U.S. markets
If good growing conditions materialize and feed supplies increase next year, this could encourage some herd growth.
The U.S. cattle herd had a major expansion over the past three years, and this will lead to continued larger production in at least the next two to three years. Beef production hit its low in 2015, and by 2018, it is expected to increase 16.5 per cent - a four-billion-pound increase.
The stage is set for 2018. The growing cattle herd and significantly more cattle put on feed in the fall will lead to increased beef supplies, espe-

cially in the second half of the year. The current futures markets are pointing to higher prices next summer despite these larger supplies. Strong demand could support the higher prices, but there is certainly some risk in the marketplace heading later into 2018 as feedlot break-evens are well above the prices seen in the summer of 2017. In addition to watching how the cattle supply and demand factors unfold, other key factors to watch will be the Canadian dollar. A dollar over 80 cents would add further price risk to the Canadian market, while a lower dollar would be supportive. Feed costs are always a key driver on calf and feeder prices, and basis levels between Canada and the U.S. can have a big impact on Canadian prices and profitability. Bottom line The high number of cattle put on feed in the fall will lead to increased beef supplies, but futures markets point to higher prices in the summer of 2018. A new year’s thank you Thank you to all the folks out there who take the time to call or comment on the articles they read in Collie Corner.
horsemanship skills of the rider and advance the horse to a new level of expertise, clinics and lessons became a sought after source of information and both people and horses advances tremendously.
It is heartening to know the number of ranchers who are improving upon their training methods and working towards using dogs to more of their potential than just following behind the stock.
For some reason the dogs have been slow to achieve this type of growth. Many dogs area still only doing the very basics of work when they could be doing so much more.
Although this is an advantageous help if the dogs are capable of a higher standard of work that provides assistance if they had a bit more training. It is great to see the interest that is growing in this area.
Perhaps there is a lack of awareness in what a trained dog is capable of doing and they need to be observed and promoted more to the public and ranching community in order to display their abilities. In this world where there seems to be a universal lack of time and qualified agricultural help, the working dog can be a very valuable asset to the ranch.
Growth in the dog world has been slow to catch on and I am not sure why. Thirty years ago the dogs and horses were basically trained on the job, with access to clinics and new sources of learning limited. However, once people realized the clinics could improve the

New research helps fight mountain pine beetle
37
The government is partnering with local researchers to combat the mountain pine beetle threat in Alberta. Mountain pine beetles pose a serious threat to Alberta’s forests and if left unmanaged could spread eastward across Canada’s boreal region. To protect Alberta’s forests, the province is working with Hinton-based fRI Research and supporting its groundbreaking research into stopping the spread of the beetle. “The mountain pine beetle is one of the major threats facing our forests in Alberta. That’s why it’s so important that we invest in critical research that will prevent this pest from not only spreading throughout Alberta’s forests but throughout the rest of Canada’s forests as well.” Oneil Carlier, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry
“Innovative approaches will be required in the coming years as Alberta attempts to manage and control the spread of the beetle. Under the leadership of Dr. Keith McClain, the fRI Research Mountain Pine Beetle Ecology Program will continue to collaborate with researchers from across Western Canada so that we can support our partners’ operational decisions, and inform policy development through science.” Ryan Tew, general manager, fRI Research
Over the past 10 years, the Mountain Pine Beetle Ecology Program at fRI Research has expanded its knowledge base to manage and control the mountain pine beetle and to address concerns of community resiliency. Research has led to:
cycle, helping to predict its damaging effects as it moves east.
· Spread models that can predict the potential of beetle spread under prevailing and future climatic conditions.
· Data regarding how beetle-killed areas of the forest are regenerating.

Lost in the bush by George Wandler
I remember when I was going to take a shortcut through the bush and one day I got lost. I had a female dog with me and four pups. After wandering around the bush for about four hours, I lost the dogs. Coming off the bald prairie, I was getting panicky, so I climbed trees and saw tree tops I had never seen before. The sun was setting – we had an oil road to the west of us. I knew if I walked into the sun, I would have to hit the road. Good thing the road was there – or I would still be wandering around and have turned into a sasquatch by now. When I got home the dogs were already there.

Grain market ebb and flow expected to continue I would characterize the major grain, cereals and oilseeds markets over the past two to three years as embroiled in an ebb and flow battle of big supply versus big demand. Global agricultural production has seen record large production for at least the last three years. At the same time, demand for food and feed ingredients is equally powerful, which in many cases has surprised all agricultural players on how quickly product is consumed worldwide. As we turn to 2018, keep in mind that market conditions are in a constant state of change due to a multitude of reasons and when market circumstances are shifting, we must tune our plans. Wheat This is a uniquely Western Canada situation where elevator spring wheat price discovery is less mindful of trends in futures prices and more focused on protein premiums/discounts. I do not view the Canadian wheat market as short of protein. Rather, it is net short market-ready protein. The wheat market’s primary task has been to cobble together usable blends of quality spring wheat approximating a target protein of near 13.5 per cent. Note, though, that near the end of 2017, bids for higher protein wheat were valued because
of blend value to achieve the target protein requirement. Feed grains Prairie cash feed barley pricing has worked its way higher through the fall season. Despite U.S. corn price weakness, Lethbridge cash feed barley bids are holding rather firmly. Rising cattle numbers entering southern Alberta feedlots and an advance into wintery conditions appears to have elevated feed demand for barley. Oilseeds Following a November peak, canola and soybean pricing retreated, still part of the big supply and demand price formula. Expect another turn up during the canola market’s seasonally supportive March-May period. Demand will at times need to be inspired by a cheaper relative valuation to other oilseeds because sustaining crush margin mediocrity and a $50 a tonne premium to soybeans is not realistic at all times. Nonetheless, China’s insatiable appetite for oilseeds (soybeans and canola) will continue to provide support for prices through the year ahead.
port tariff bomb on imports. Prairie cash bids for yellow peas took a sudden turn lower in late 2017 as the ensuing confusion triggered cardiac arrest throughout the pulse trade here and internationally. The Indian food policy is unpredictable, driven by those who support high stocks and low prices for the benefit of consumers and those in favour of higher prices for the benefit of farmers. In this instance, this policy decision has been made with the benefit of farmers in mind.

while Chinese demand is expected to provide 2018 support for oilseeds. In pulses, a recalibration of demand outlets should smooth out Indian trade disruption. Mike Jubinville of Pro Farmer Canada offers information on commodity markets and marketing strategies. Call 204-654-4290 or visit www.pfcanada.com to find out more about his services.
Bottom line Always be prepared to make marketing plans as markets shift. As we look towards 2018, crop adversity could strengthen wheat prices,

Why now is the time to get tax info in order
The start of a new year signals an opportune time to begin organizing and planning tax information for 2018. A detailed inventory list should be put together as soon as possible as this only gets harder the longer you wait, says Kimberly Shipley of MNP’s agricultural services. “If you are in AgriStability, having production information summarized is easier to do close to the year-end than trying to figure it out later in the year,” Shipley adds. Late starters
farmers start with a record-keeping check. They should ensure they’ve made accurate records of all past revenues, expenses, equipment purchases and sales, and in a format that’s usable for their advisers, he says.
Although most operations are taxed on a cash basis, Bokenfohr encourages farmers to work with their accountants and advisers to develop accrued statements for use in making future decisions.
Producers also need precise records of cash advances, deferrals, paid wages, and how they’ve chosen to split income.
“If you are providing accrual information to your bank, use the January and February information to find the amounts you collected and paid that year and that related to the previous tax year,” adds Shipley.
“WCB reporting is due at the end of February, and is easier to file at the same time you file T4s,” adds Shipley.
Constructing a true financial picture of the business, including debtto-service ratios, can assist in working with farmers’ lenders.

achieve, Bokenfohr says. He recommends producers meet with their advisors now to review their long-term business plans. “Consult them on some of the key questions on how can they get some of their ratios to improve, and where they’re at with their farm: are they planning in the next five years to expand, or are they planning to move on their succession plan?” Bottom line Get organized now to construct a true financial picture of your farm, focus your business plans and help with 2018 tax filings. CCA prepares for round six of NAFTA talks
The Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA)’s participation at all rounds of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) modernization and re-negotiation process will continue in 2018, as the sixth round of formal talks takes place in Montreal from January 23 to 28. While it remains unclear whether or when the U.S. might commence procedures to withdraw from NAFTA, CCA’s presence, to provide Government of Canada negotiators with expertise and to ensure that the interests of beef producers are advanced in the ongoing talks, will
be as necessary as ever. The negotiations resume following significant progress in 2017 to modernize a range of non-controversial technical issues. However, this positive progress towards modernization has largely been overshadowed by several regressive proposals tabled by the U.S. and subsequently rejected as unacceptable by Canada and Mexico. Canadian beef producers strongly support retaining the existing NAFTA provisions affecting the beef and cattle trade. The CCA and its
U.S. and Mexican beef cattle producer organization counterparts are united in their position that the terms of trade remain unchanged in the renegotiations. Our united priorities for the beef sector include: continued duty-free and quota-free access for beef and live cattle trade with the NAFTA tariff preference for beef based on the current rule of origin; opposing the return of a trade disrupting mandatory country of origin labeling regime; maintaining dispute settlement mechanisms, both within NAFTA (Chapters 19 and 20) and external dispute settlement tools at the World Trade Organization. Furthermore, we believe it is possible to improve bilateral cattle and beef

trade through greater regulatory cooperation and elimination of some obsolete regulatory border requirements. The CCA is also focused on strategies to manage the risk of U.S. withdrawal from NAFTA. These include ongoing efforts to expand on our trade and market access priorities, including liberalizing trade in the Asia-Pacific through the new Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership (aka TPP11), progressing market access expansion and a potential free trade agreement in China, and ensuring the necessary conditions to progress beef trade in the EU through the Canada-EU Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). We will also work to ensure that if the U.S. does withdraw from NAFTA, that a viable agreement will continue to exist between Canada and Mexico and that our two countries may continue to enjoy dutyfree cattle and beef trade, while recognizing the disruptive consequences caused by higher tariffs on our countries’ two-way trade in beef and cattle with the U.S.

Wheat market steadies to start 2018 Current wheat markets remain far below their summer rally highs. The markets stabilized and rose modestly from their mid-December lows, but price pressure from the well-supplied global trade remains the dominant theme, which continues to limit wheat rally potential. Export news was light, which is not surprising after coming through the holiday period. The trade has mostly shrugged off the bitterly cold temperatures that dipped deep down in the United States Plains hard red winter wheat areas on the holiday break. Winterkill fears are usually overblown this time of year anyways. Cold weather damage The recent bout of extreme cold did damage as far south as southern Kansas and Oklahoma. While there was some light protective snow cover across the northern U.S. Plains, exposed areas in southern Kansas
and Oklahoma were vulnerable to winter kill. The market will not be able to gauge the impact of the cold weather until the crop exits dormancy this spring. That, along with the recognition that global feed wheat supplies are plentiful, has limited the rally potential for the wheat market. Future possibilities There is always a chance for a random bounce higher in U.S. wheat futures because the speculative crowd is short wheat futures - notably Chicago soft red winter wheat - and could quickly move to cover positions if resistance lines on price charts are breached. But the reason why rallies fail is that offshore cash pricing, largely set by export competitors like Russia and Ukraine, don’t care if the U.S. price moves higher. That’s because they hold large supplies that can be quickly exported as logistics allow for months ahead yet.
In the meantime, the offshore world price grinds along. Spring wheat As a subset wheat class, spring wheat is still trying to balance three elements: 1. The need to create sufficient supply of market-ready high protein in a protein deficit market 2. The reality that spring wheat is still expensive compared to other wheat classes 3. Next year’s crop is likely to replenish the protein supply Spring wheat is in a tough spot because once protein imbalance issues are resolved, a new price equilibrium is likely to develop where higher protein wheat loses some of the price premium it carried much of the past year over lower protein wheats. This week, grain markets remain quiet as traders await the release of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s big round of crop reports on Jan. 12. There are the final crop
production, quarterly grain stocks, winter wheat seedings, and U.S./ world supply/demand. This is the biggest single USDA data release of the year, and historically is a day that has the potential to spur some big price moves. Trader consensus ahead of the reports is that USDA number will be bearish soybeans (lowered demand and exports) and corn (higher 2017 production). U.S. winter wheat acres could be the smallest on record for the last 100 years, but is that idea already baked into the market amid still massive global wheat supply? Bottom line There’s still a large worldwide supply of wheat, which appears to be keeping prices low right now. Prices have increased some in January, though, compared to low prices in December. Talking about the 2018 Calgary Motorcycle Show The 2018 version of the Calgary Motorcycle Show is now in the history books. In all it was a well-attended show but the ravages of the economy over the last few years in our industry sure showed. Businesses that one expected to see there like Torch Motorcycles, no longer exist and businesses that have been present in the past just can’t afford them at the moment. Attending a tradeshow is a VERY expensive proposition and while it is vital that the business community market itself, many just can’t afford it thanks to the economy. The Motorcycle Show really doesn’t have many choices as to potential locations they could move to in an attempt to bring down pricing. There
simply are no buildings in the Calgary region that are large enough or provide the equipment that is needed to host it. Its disappointing really because the community has so many businesses and groups that really need and deserve the exposure that being out in front of 25,000+ eyeballs can offer. The show itself was well run as always. Laurie and Brittany do a fantastic job and had lots of media of all kinds, which brought the consumers out, but there were a number of members of the Calgary Stampede show staff that let them down. There is a new policy the BMO Centre has in place regarding entrance at doorways. Only one doorway is open in the back hallways where vendors come in and every vendor, regardless of where their booth is located must enter through door 6 – in the dead centre of the hallway/building. Talk about inconvenient if your booth is in a far corner of the building. The same policy is in effect for the public. Everyone must come in through the main doors – ONLY.
The same unassuming, humble personality that comes to life the minute he starts talking motorcycles. As always the Ground ‘N’ Gravity Show enthralled all show goers who attended. While watching these athletes perform you will find yourself holding your breath. SHE Rides Night on Friday had 451 women who took provided by Canadian Kawasaki. Betty Jo of Edmonton was the lucky winner. There were over 1000 entries to the new Kawasaki Double Take draw and a very large excited crowd gathered at 4:00pm on Saturday to hear if their names were called. Andy from Crowsnest Pass and Chad from Calgary were the 2 lucky winners of the Kawasaki Z125 motorcycles. The Motorcycle Shows are a much-needed break from winter and the manufacturers and major parts and clothing wholesalers did a really good job of making their booths inviting and having lots on hand to see. Oh and MINI DONUTS arrived to the Motorcycle Show in Calgary and for some, that is reason enough to get off the couch and come out!
The policy is not very friendly to either consumer or vendor. Bottle necks & plugged aisle ways means it takes vendors a long time to get back to their booth if they use the vendors lounge for a meal. It’s really a silly policy and as I said before, it’s one more reason why vendors are not returning to the shows. I provided the show staff with the feedback and I hope others have as well. The show itself had a lot of variety of marques on hand with lots of new products and new models. A new motorcycle shop in Calgary, Ill Fated Kustoms had a great display on hand and Kenny, the engineer/builder reminded me a lot of Chika.

Wet fall creates ideal mycotoxin environment A joint feed analysis of the 2017 grain harvest, led by animal health company Alltech Canada, shows wet conditions created an ideal environment for the development of mycotoxins in feed. Alexandra Weaver, mycotoxin management technical specialist with Alltech, says mycotoxins are produced by certain species of molds, which grow particularly well in damp conditions. In higher amounts, mycotoxins can affect feed intake, reproduction, milk production and gut health. Weaver says rainfall is the key to their develop-
ABP cow calf meeting coming up At the ABP Cow Calf Council meeting in December, direction was given to engage producers and encourage industry involvement in the Verified Beef Production Plus (VBP+) program.
ment. Rain prior to flowering causes the release of spores from molds. During flowering, rain helps the fungus to establish on a grain. And rain right after flowering helps the fungus spread to other grains. Conditions were right Ontario experienced all these conditions. Significant mycotoxin development took place in isolated pockets throughout Canada, but mainly in Ontario where high levels of rainfall were widespread. In the feed analysis, mycotoxins were found in corn, haylage and corn silage. The latter was the biggest problem, she says, because the whole plant is harvested, rather than just cobs, fungus and bacteria from the soil accompany the plant into storage and proliferate. And that’s certainly the case this year. Of the 432 feed test samples, almost 88 per cent of corn silage samples had more than one part per million of the mycotoxin deoxynivalenol, commonly known as DON and also known as vomitoxin. Over half the samples had two parts per million or even more. DON levels vary by region
You can learn about VBP+ enrollment and audit at verifiedbeefproductionplus.ca.
Now offering you an alternative method to sell your property
The Cow Calf Council is hosting a training session on Monday, January 29, 2018 at the ABP office starting at 1:30 p.m. Alberta’s VBP+ Coordinator, Melissa Downing, will be conducting the afternoon session, and it should take about three and a half hours. VBP+ enrolment will be part of the session and there is no cost to participants with learning materials supplied. This is a chance to learn about and enrolled your farm in Canada’s progressive beef initiative: be part of Canada’s beef future. You’ll have the opportunity to discuss VBP+ with other producers interested in the program. Registration is required for the ABP session as meeting room space is limited. Please register by contacting the ABP office at reception@albertabeef.org or 403-275-4400. Please register by January 24 and spread the word to other producers in your network.
The highest levels of contamination in corn silage samples were in Norfolk County. Other counties with significantly higher levels than average were Haldimand, Middlesex, Ottawa, Simcoe, Niagara and Renfrew. Weaver urges producers to be diligent in determining the problem in their own feed. “There’s a level of concern,” Weaver says. “Mycotoxins seldom exist in isolation. Producers should definitely check their feed and watch for signs of mycotoxins affecting their livestock.” Management Managing mycotoxins is a multi-faceted effort, she says. Healthy plants have a better chance of surviving mycotoxins, so plant early, use fertilizer and protect crops from insects, weeds and plant disease. Know your humidity level before and during harvest, and be aware of how you treat contaminated grains whether you are exposing them to other grains. Other companies involved in the 2017 feed analysis were Masterfeeds and Stratford AgriAnalysis. More information on mycotoxins can be found at knowmycotoxins.com.
