Breakfast Brief “Character is like a tree and reputation like a shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing.” – Abraham Lincoln (16th President of the United States) Grain Prices Sit in Shadow of Trade War Grain prices are all taking a heavy hit this morning as the grain market deals with effects of a trade war between China and America. Given the threats lobbed back and forth, the markets are taking a more subdued approach to where all the chips land on this one. Canola prices are down with soybeans, but also taking some lower hits for two other reasons. First, palm oil production has been strong thus far this month in major producing areas. Second, canola crush plants in Western Canada have slowed down production because of lack of rail service. Just by the numbers, every day that a plant is down, it’s about a $1.8 million loss in production. Wheat prices remain pressured with rain falling in the US Southern Plains, and with more in the forecast. Winter wheat crop conditions in the Black Sea remain relatively positive with soil moisture health across the region.

On Thursday, March 29, we will get the USDA’s Planting Intentions report. Yesterday, Informa came out with their estimates, forecasting 91.5 million acres of soybeans and 88.9 million acres of corn.

Grain Prices Forgetting Argentina is Dry? The Buenos Aires Grain Exchange (BAGE) reported this week that 80% of the Argentine soybean crop was rated poor or very poor. Usually, you see that sort of rating for the good-to-excellent column! The reason for the switch around is that 90% of Argentina’s soybean fields see soil moisture levels categorized in the two lowest categories: poor or dry. With this sort of rating downgrade, the BAGE dropped their estimate of the Argentine soybean harvest to 39.5 million tonnes. This is down 2.5 million tonnes from their previous estimate. AgResource is now suggesting that the final number could come in closer to 35 million tonnes.
LOAD IT UP WITH WOOD, SET THE THERMOSTAT AND RELAX • Up to 100,000 BTU/Hour Output • Stand-Alone or Forced-Air Furnace
As for moisture going forward, Argentina is expected to get some, but it’s unlikely to make too much of a difference to yield potential on this crop and will likely only help the wheat crop that will be planted in a few weeks. Northern Argentina will get some heavy but isolated rains this weekend while the rest of the country sees scattered showers next week. In the first week of April, dryness will return.

Steady rain is expected to continue to fall across much of Brazil, although the far eastern areas of the Brazilian corn belt are looking a bit drier over the next week. That being said, soil moisture conditions are more than healthy for the second corn crop’s early development.

Brewing a China-America Trade War Yesterday, President Trump announced that America would be putting tariffs on about $50 Billion worth of Chinese imports. This is the result of a seven-month investigation into intellectual property theft, often contentious issues between the two world superpowers. China wasn’t going to be pushed around though! They announced their list of things that they might start taxing soon. The list was $3 Billion worth of American goods that get imported into China, including steel, apples, and pork. It’s been speculated for the past month now that import taxes on soybeans are in China’s gunsights as well, but there’s nothing been done yet. The American agriculture industry is, however, the easiest target for China to go after. The editors of Bloomberg think that America’s tariffs on Chinese goods will only have an impact on the average American taxpayer. They argue that, regardless of the taxes, American consumers will continue to buy “Made in China” products because there are no better (or cheaper) substitutes. Thus, President Trump keeps the spotlight, and the American taxpayer is left sulking in the shadows. Have a great weekend! To growth,

Students learn leadership, teamwork by working with horses Horses have an uncanny ability to attune themselves with humans, and seven North Peace Secondary students began to learn that firsthand last week as part of an equine assisted learning class. For the next 12 weeks, students will meet once a week at the Rock Alder Ranch near Charlie Lake, paired with a horse to work through obstacles in a series of challenges meant to build leadership and teamwork skills. The horses are the teacher, instructor Shawna-Marie Phillip said, and communicate through body language to get through the obstacles given to them and the students. “Horses have really high functioning survival skills,” Phillip said. “That’s why they’re a good match for humans.” Horses are also able to communicate with people without blame or judgement when a mistake is made — they simply react, she said. “Once you get to know one another, you start to work as a real good team,” Phillips said. It’s the first year the program is being offered to high school students after a successful run at Dr. Kearney school. Students will journal their experiences throughout the program.
“Sometimes, you won’t realize what you’ve learned until you meet some sort of challenge and think, what did I learn from the horse?” Phillips said. “You apply that to regular life and have the horse to help walk you through it.” Thirty Dr. Kearney students will take part in the program after the spring break. To learn more, visit Frontier Horsemanship Academy on Facebook.

Halfway mark hit for public engagement on ALR
CGC Statistics
& BuSineSS information
The public engagement portion of the Revitalization of the Agricultural Land Reserve and the Agricultural Land Commission has reached the halfway point, with more than 7, 510 visits to the engagement website, and stakeholder meetings held in nine communities throughout British Columbia. “The public engagement site has seen a lot of interaction from British Columbians who are passionate about our Agricultural Land Reserve, and want to share their vision for the revitalization,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture. “So far we’ve had 989 surveys completed, and we hope to see that number increase over the next half of the engagement period. Now’s the time to have your say on revitalizing the ALR for the 21st century.” Popham announced the members of the independent committee tasked with overseeing the ALR revitalization process in January of this year. The committee produced a consultation paper, which is available on the public engagement website, to guide the engagement process, as well as the stakeholder meetings. “Our advisory committee has visited communities in regions around the province, meeting with farm and ranch organizations and local

governments to listen to their views on revitalizing the ALR and ALC. Our committee has heard concerns about growing pressures on agricultural land and the need to support farm and ranch businesses,” said Jennifer Dyson, chair of the ALR Revitalization Committee. “A sincere thank-you to all participants who provided thought-provoking discussion and ideas. We are thankful for the passion and interest behind each conversation as part of this engagement. We encourage everyone to take the time to provide their input.” The committee will use the input it receives during the engagement process to develop recommendations.. The recommendations may include changes to the current legislative, regulatory, and administrative framework to revitalize the ALR and the ALC. Any legislative changes that support the revitalization of the commission and the reserve are targeted for late 2018 or early 2019. The ALC is an independent administrative tribunal dedicated to preserving agricultural land and encouraging farming in British Columbia. The ALR is a provincial zone in which agriculture is recognized as the priority use, farming is encouraged and non-agricultural uses are restricted.

Ministers tour Western Canada’s bovine TB outbreak farm While in Alberta this week, federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, Lawrence MacAulay, joined Oneil Carlier, Alberta Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, to tour the once-quarantined Alberta farm where the first confirmed case of bovine tuberculosis (bovine TB) was detected in September 2016. Bovine TB posed a serious challenge for affected livestock producers and Canada’s cattle industry. Federal and provincial officials worked closely with the sector to take appropriate measures to contain the disease, and to reduce the financial impact on farm operations. Affected producers received $39 million in federal compensation for animals ordered destroyed and tax relief. In addition, a Canada-Alberta AgriRecovery initiative provided up to $15 million in assistance to cover the extraordinary costs resulting from the quarantine measures. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency removed all quarantines from farms with cattle in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba in February 2018. All premises with cattle have been tested and no additional cases of bovine TB have been detected.
“Our producers raise the best beef and our customers around the world are demanding more of it. Lifting all quarantines is a positive step forward for Canada’s cattle industry, demonstrating the value of our collaborative response and ongoing surveillance efforts. Our Government will continue to work with our provincial and industry partners to give Canada’s beef industry a competitive edge that will open doors here in Canada, and around the world,” said Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food. “The support provided through the AgriRecovery framework was essential in helping our ranchers recover from the impacts of last year’s bovine TB outbreak and demonstrates our collective recognition of the challenges producers endure in extraordinary situations like this. The lifting of the quarantine is testament to the effectiveness of Alberta’s livestock traceability programs, the strength of our partnership with the federal government and the resilience of Alberta’s beef producers,” added Alberta Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Oneil Carlier with a provincial chime in.

Investments to promote Canada’s agricultural trade interests The Government of Canada is supporting a more stable and secure trading environment for agricultural exporters through a $1-million investment in the world’s three standard-setting bodies for agriculture and food products. The $1-million investment will support scientific and technical work of the Codex Alimentarius and the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC), of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, and the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) in their efforts to ensure that technical regulations and standards do not unduly restrict global trade while at the same time protecting food safety, animal and plant health. Ensuring a predictable sciencebased trade environment is key for Canada’s agricultural exporters to
help them remain well-positioned to reach the ambitious goal set in Budget 2017 to increase Canada’s agri-food exports to $75 billion by 2025. Strong international trade standards, guidelines and codes of practices help ensure a level-playing field for Canadian producers and businesses trading products all over the world. “The Government of Canada supports science-based trade rules to ensure Canada remains a global leader in agricultural exports. This investment will help the development of international standards which will benefit Canadian farmers, processors and consumers by ensuring predictable trade for our economies,” proclaimed Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food.

Preventative health in yearlings before grass turnout by Dr. Mike Ross
I know it is hard to think about spring with this winter still lingering but grass is around the corner. Come on, you have no other option but to be optimistic after the last winter! I have noticed over the years how pasture turnout always brings about happiness for producers and cattle alike. Cattlemen and women that have retained or purchased yearlings for grazing or breeding need to remember to make sure their animals are set up and ready to convert pasture into pounds. Most producers realize the tight margins that exist when grazing yearlings. There are a few things health- wise we should consider to emphasize efficiency in your stocker program. Before turning your yearlings out on pasture there are some small herd health things that you can do which will reap huge benefits to your bottom line. The first thing that should be considered in your pre - turnout health program is vaccination. At the very least animals should receive a 5- way modified live (MLV) and a clostridial blackleg (8way, 7-way) vaccine. Even if you have a closed herd and your cattle aren’t exposed to any other cattle, wildlife can transmit some of these diseases and some of them are found in the soil so it is still beneficial to vaccinate. In yearling heifers meant for breeding a MLV given a month before bull turnout will create fetal protection against BVD and ensure qualification in certain verifica-
tion programs which add value. Depending on your calves’ health history, vaccination can be tailored to your needs and help keep your yearlings thriving on pasture. Yearlings should be dewormed because this has proven to yield a significant return on investment. These animals are the most susceptible age group to be significantly affected by internal parasites. For most yearlings it is the first time in their life they are going to have to survive solely by grazing. They usually have not yet developed a high immunity to internal parasites and it does not take long for pasture parasite load to skyrocket due to infestation, reproduction, and high fecal shedding. There is a relatively new product available to break this vicious cycle and add pounds to your animals. This product is named LongRange® and it is the first long acting wormer available for cattle. Its effect on parasites 100 days (150 days on lungworm) due to its new slow release technology. It is labelled for yearlings and has had promising results increasing average daily gain by up to 11% and adding 23 to 28 pounds of gain when compared to some other wormers. Fly control can also be an advantage in some areas. Topical application of products like CyLence® can aid in horn fly control and also clean up any lice that may be lingering from winter. Back rubbers are another way of safely ap-
plying these products. Please use only product’s that are safe and labeled for use in food producing animals. Another advantage you can give your yearlings on grass is to implant. Grasser steers are castrated and hence have lost the hormonal influence of testosterone to switch on their metabolism and get them growing. Implanting is supplying this animal with a small amount of hormone to help the animals be more efficient converters of grass to lean muscle. In some instances this can increase gains by as much as 20 to 30 pounds. These animals eat less feed, drink less water which results in a huge environmental advantage when considering how efficiently we can get them to their end point. Other things may include pregnancy testing your heifers to identify unwanted early pregnancies and having a good mineral available for them to ensure they have all of their trace minerals which improve immunity and growth. Don’t forget to process your yearlings before grass. It will yield to greater results and healthier happier animals. Do not hesitate to call if you have any questions on preventative health strategies for your grass cattle. Your veterinarian will be happy to come up with a plan to suit your needs and help your bottom line.

Stupid things people say, and God help their horses I’m not sure whether to cry or laugh when I think of some of the things I seen and heard. I do know I feel bad for the horses. Lets start with what one knowledgeable lady said “ I don’t need to go to any clinics, my horse is excellent unless he sees something or doesn’t see something. “Wow” is all I can say to that. How about the fellow that said if your horse won’t back calmly out of the trailer then just back the trailer up to the dugout and let him fall backwards into the water. Maybe if the fellow ever got scared about something we could just hold him upside down with his head in a bucket of water, I’m sure that would make the fellow braver. What about the 20 year old girl that said the horse is stupid and won’t bend so I’m tying his head to the saddle and I’ll come back later when he’s all bendy and smartened up. Maybe someone should tie her head to her belt and come back when she’s all brilliant. Or the lady in the tack store that said her horse was beat with a leather bridle so he’s scared of leather now so she wants to buy a nylon bridle now or maybe a hackamore but not a leather one because he’s scared of leather. Hope she doesn’t have leather shoes on the horse will see those shoes and be gone or a leather saddle or leather gloves. OMG! Never forget the mother that needs sharper spurs for her teenage daughter because the daughter just can’t get that lazy horse to listen. There is the odd story out there about teenagers that won’t clean their rooms maybe a nice sharp spur in the ribs is the answer. The lady that had a horse that took off in the other direction when her horse seen cattle for the first time. She said to her daughter, “ I’ve
got a bigger bit in the trailer go get it. I’m not convinced that will help the horse get used to cattle. The gal that said “my horse is scared of men” as she slowly, carefully snuck up to her horse so she could rub it. How about the would be trainer that said his dad told him the best way to fix a horse that pulls is with a barbed wire halter. I think for this guy we could put him in a coffin in the ground and if he at all felt claustrophobic we could open the lid and throw a roll of barbed wire in that should cure him with the way he feels. Another all time favorite, I need a tie down for this horse, I need to do whatever I want with the reins and that horse just needs to take it and not get his head up. Oh and gal that couldn’t load her own horse but after seeing it loaded by someone else she promptly started advertising trailer loading clinics. Or the other gal that watched a trailer loading demo then offered to load a horse for some people that were having trouble and when she was done the trailer had a man door that was now a bit bigger than a horse and a horse that was used to the sound of a cutting torch. The horse went in and right out the man door but couldn’t fit all the way out. The cowboy that said “ that damn horse of mine I was pulling as hard as I could and he wouldn’t stop ran off with me, I need a bit that when I say stop he better stop”. My horse is perfect except I can’t catch him, he’s bad with his feet, I can’t get ride out of the yard, he won’t load, pulls back, and bucks if you try to canter, oh ya and spooks a lot. What about the herd that their tail heads, back bone, hips bones are sticking out past anything else their necks have a big u in them their heads are
down and you can count every rib but the guy says I’m feeding them lots I don’t know what their problem is. This one easy, take the guy and when his tail bone, back bone, hip bones are sticking out prominently for all to see, we can count all his ribs and his head is hanging down we can ask him if he can think of anything we should try to do differently. And they get a trim once a year so lets leave his toe nails grow for a year, if one gets in grown or a tear in it no worries a year isn’t that long and we have other important things we need to be doing. Lord help us, When do we look in the mirror and ask ourselves if we have anything to do with these situations and think about what you say, does it make any sense at all.

Buttermilk baked French Toast, and a side of B and E Ingredients 1 3/4 cups buttermilk 3/4 cup pure maple syrup 8 large eggs, divided 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract 1 teaspoon cinnamon 2 (approximately 6-inch) soft baguettes 6 strips applewood smoked bacon 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted Get cracking. In a medium sized mixing bowl, whisk the buttermilk with the syrup, 2 of the eggs, vanilla and cinnamon. Whisk until it’s very smooth. Pour the buttermilk mixture into an approximately (8 X 8 X 3-inch) baking dish. Slice the baguettes in half, lengthwise, and then cut about ¼-inch off of the crust sides, lengthwise. Add the bread to the dish with the buttermilk mixture, and very carefully press it down until it’s completely submerged. Then flip each one over. Add a layer of plastic wrap directly on top, and then cover the dish with another layer (completely, from the bottom, so it doesn’t spill). This way you can press down on top from time to time, to be sure the bread is absorbing as much liquid as possible. Place in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours. (You can leave it for more time, even overnight -the longer you leave it, the more like bread pudding it will be.) While the bread is soaking, add the bacon to a large sauté pan over medium heat. Cook until it’s just beginning to become brown and crisp, about 3 minutes per side. Remove the bacon from the
pan. Set it aside to drain a paper towel. (It should be slightly undercooked, and will finish cooking in the oven later.) When you remove the soaked bread from the refrigerator, adjust a rack to to the center of the oven and preheat to 375 degrees F. Super gently flip each piece of bread over in the dish. Then drizzle the entire surface with the melted butter. Arrange the partially cooked bacon strips on top and set aside until the oven is ready. Place the dish in the preheated 375 degree F oven. Bake for 30 minutes, and then crack the remaining 6 eggs on top of the bacon, so that they are spread out evenly. Continue to bake until the French toast portion has risen above the edges and the eggs are set, about 30 more minutes. If at any point the bacon is becoming too dark, loosely lay a piece of foil on top.
Remove and let it cool for about 10 minutes. Make sure when you serve, each person gets an egg, and don’t forget to put the maple syrup on the table. (Just in case.)

And now the launch of the Agricultural Clean Tech program
The Government of Canada is committed to supporting the research, development, demonstration and adoption of clean technologies, because they create good jobs for Canadians and help meet Canada’s climate change goals. Today, the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Lawrence MacAulay, visited an innovative farm in St-Eugene, Ontario to announce the Agricultural Clean Technology Program. This $25 million, three-year investment will help the agricultural sector reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the development and adoption of clean technologies. Provinces and territories are eligible to apply for federal funding through this program, and are encouraged to work with in-
North Point Angus
dustry on projects that focus on precision agriculture and/or bioproducts. “This investment will help Canadian farmers stay on the cutting edge of clean technology by targeting developments in bioproducts and precision agriculture. Our government has made both agriculture and clean technology a priority for growth in our economy. This new program will contribute to Canada’s place as a world leader in agricultural clean technology, helping farmers to develop new and efficient uses of energy, while also protecting our environmental resources and mitigating climate change,” says Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food. “Today’s announcement provides stable funding to help the agricultural sector move towards more sustainable practices. These funds will help farmers across the country to adopt means of production that are both environmentally friendly and more efficient. Terryland Farms is a perfect example of what can be achieved with sustainable and clean technology practice,” echoes Member of Parliament Francis Drouin (Glengarry—Prescott—Russell).

BC reaffirms commitment to BC wine with funding for BC Wine month. In BC. BC wine. British Columbians are being encouraged to discover, share and choose B.C. wines through a partnership between the Ministry of Agriculture and the BC Wine Institute. April is BC Wine Month — a chance to celebrate and support B.C.’s grape growers and winemakers. “B.C.’s vineyard owners and winemakers produce award-winning wines, while providing good jobs and economic benefits to their communities,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture. “Our government is committed to helping winemakers create and expand markets for their products internationally, and in our home province, which remains, by far, the most important market for B.C. wines.” Along with the proclamation of BC Wine Month in April, the Province has committed $100,000 to the BC Wine Institute to help in the promotion of B.C. wine to British Columbians. “We are grateful for provincial support to promote the many B.C. grape growers and wineries, most of which are small, family-owned and operated businesses, here at home,” said Miles Prodan, president and CEO of the BC Wine Institute.
April’s BC Wine Month campaign will showcase the world-class wines that are produced in B.C.’s recognized wine regions. British Columbia Vintners Quality Alliance (BC VQA) wine will be featured in 119 BC Liquor Stores. There will be sommeliers and chefs teaming up for wine and food-pairing events in all 18 BC VQA wine stores and multi-chef collaborative BC VQA wine-paired dinners. B.C. Wine Month will also tie into Buy BC: EAT DRINK LOCAL, a dineout campaign run by the BC Restaurant and Food Services Association. This promotion involves B.C. restaurants and bars highlighting local foods and beverages to customers during May 2018, so British Columbians can experience restaurant takes on B.C.-grown and produced food and beverages. Wine whine: British Columbia is home to 929 vineyards, including more than 350 licensed wineries. There are 4,130 hectares of wine grapes grown in B.C. More than 60 grape varietals are produced in the province. B.C.’s wine industry employs about 12,000 people, and contributes approximately $2.8 billion per year to Northern Horiz. 9.4888” x 6.21” the B.C. economy.

How is the health of your farm business? Alberta Agriculture and Forestry’s Agricultural Business Analyzer, and Simple Farm Ratio Analyzer, can give users a quick idea of the financial status of their farm or ranch as well as a comparison of their business’s ratios to industry benchmarks. “The Simple Farm Ratio Analyzer is a short cut Excel program that takes just eight key financial entries and calculates financial ratios for the farm/ ranch and colour codes them in comparison to industry benchmarks,” says Rick Dehod, farm financial specialist, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, Edmonton. “These eight key financial numbers can be taken from your accountant prepared financial statements for the past year and entered into the various open cells in the one page spreadsheet.” The eight key numbers are farm gross revenue, farm gross expenses, depreciation, debt servicing payments, current assets, long term assets, current debt and long term debt. “With these eight quick entries you will know how your farm is doing financially,” says Dehod. “You can then consult

with your accountant or an agricultural finance specialist to come up with plans to mitigate and improve those areas where your financial ratios are weak.” Compare your net worth statement for the beginning of the 2017, to your closing net worth statement for 2017, says Dehod. “You can generate the year-end financial ratios, and compare them to the ratios you generated from your beginning net worth statement. This will give an indication if your 2018 operating plan increased your farm business’s financial viability and the health of your farming operation. Benchmarking will give you valuable information on how you are doing financially and how your business plan affected your financial health. “It all seems like a lot of work, but it will help you create an awareness that can help you make better decisions to increase the viability and success of your farm business in 2018.” Dehod says the Agricultural Business Analyzer is another great tool to help develop an operation’s 2018 business plan. It is a financial analysis tool designed to aid users to do review
up to five years of historical financial data and prepare and analyze a financial plan for the upcoming year. “Projections done start with an opening net worth statement, and look forward for one year. Incomes and expenses are considered along with expected cash flows. From this data, the Agricultural Business Analyzer creates a closing financial statement illustrating what the financial situation of the farm operation will be at the end of one year based on the projections. In addition, the program calculates key ratios in the areas of liquidity, solvency, profitability and efficiency for both the past and projected income and financial statements, and compares them to industry benchmarks.”

Hemp Food Approved for Sale in Australia and NZ
Effective November 12, 2017, Food Standards Australia and New Zealand has approved the sale of foods derived from hemp for human consumption. The new standard will take effect six months after it has been approved and requires the amendment of a range of legislation in New Zealand and Australia. Hemp in Australia and New Zealand is cultivated under strict licensing arrangements and prior to this approval was only permitted for use as a source of fibre for clothing and building products. Previously, exports of hemp food products from Australia have been allowed, but not for local consumption. “Short-term opportunities for Alberta companies exist for imported hemp foods brands to gain market
share and establish brand awareness before Australia and New Zealand increase their own hemp foods production and processing capacities,” says Albert Eringfeld, manager with International Relations and Marketing, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. Alberta companies interested in the Australian food market are invited by the Canadian High Commission in Australia to exhibit within the Canadian Pavilion at the Fine Food Australia 2018 show in Melbourne September 10 to 13, 2018. For more information on this show and for details on import requirements and processes for hemp foods to Australia and New Zealand contact Albert Eringfeld at 780-4154814.

It’s Time to Address the Elephant in the Field
Eight thousand pounds. That’s how much more the other sprayers weigh compared to an Apache. That’s like a full grown elephant trouncing around your field, compacting your soil, guzzling your gas, robbing your yield and defecating on your profits.

Food security in rural BC: talking with local abattoirs
To help improve food security in rural communities and help more British Columbians enjoy B.C. beef, pork, poultry and lamb, the B.C. government is consulting with small abattoirs and other stakeholders for feedback and suggestions on how to improve rural abattoir licensing in B.C. Current and former holders of Class D- and E-licensed abattoirs will be asked to describe their experiences with the administration, licensing, operations and food safety of their abattoir, and to discuss other ideas that could enhance lo-
cal slaughter capacity throughout the province. The Ministry of Agriculture will also gather input on the topics from key stakeholders including the BC Association of Abattoirs and the BC Cattlemen’s Association, as well as regional health authorities. The consultation will be limited to Class D and E licences only, and will not consider provincial A and B licensed, or federally licensed slaughterhouses. Class D Licence holders are allowed to slaughter up to 11,339.81 kilograms (25,000 pounds) of their
own or other people’s animals per year, for direct sales to consumers or to food businesses such as restaurants and meat shops in the region the meat was produced. Class D Licence holders must also operate in one of the 10 regional districts that have been designated as rural remote areas. Class E Licence holders may slaughter up to 4,535.92 kilograms (10,000 pounds) of their own animals (only) for direct sale to consumers (only) in the area the meat was produced. There are currently 19 Class D Licence Holders and 27 Class E licence holders in B.C. The consultation is part of a review of the province’s rural slaughter capacity the ministry is undertaking to support B.C. ranchers and
livestock producers in rural communities. A slaughterhouse of information: Ten regional districts were designated as rural and remote areas due to: the absence of licensed slaughter facilities, low population density, small livestock numbers, transportation barriers (e.g., required marine transportation or seasonal road closures). The regional districts are Central Coast, Kitimat-Stikine, Mount Waddington, Northern Rockies, Powell River, Skeena-Queen-Charlotte, Squamish-Lillooet, Stikine, Strathcona (Mainland and Discovery Islands portion only) and Sunshine Coast.

Tips to make 2018 a less dangerous driving/riding experience Driving a vehicle? 1. Motorcycles are entitled to the full width of their lane. Motorcycles don’t take up as much lane space as car or 4 x 4 truck, but they need to use the entire lane, often adjusting lane positions to avoid road debris and to respond to wind direction changes & gusts, avoid pot holes or simply to see what’s up ahead as they prepare to pass a vehicle. 2. Blind spots: If you are thinking about any lane change; use your turn signal and ensure that you look in your mirror, over your shoulder and do that a second time – LOOK TWICE to SAVE a LIFE! 3. As Yosemite Sam would say; “Back off” and leave some room: Leaving some distance between your car /pick up truck/ SUV and other vehicles is very important for the safety of you and your passengers. Motorcycles are small in profile and therefore it is harder to gauge their distance. There is always potential to be rear ended at a red light and while most likely the result would be a fender bender between passenger vehicles, the situation can become a whole lot more dire when a motorcycle is involved. 4. Look TWICE: Because of their smaller stature, motorcycles can appear farther away than they actually are. They can also be hidden from your view behind other larger vehicles. Left hand turns by automobiles are one of the most frequent crashes that take place between passenger vehicles and motorcycles. 5. Hazardous road conditions: Dangerous road conditions; slippery roads, rain, hail or unexpected snow/ sleet, uneven payment, debris on the road, potholes and road snakes are common causes of motorcycle crashes. Motorcycles are smaller than cars and trucks; they have less stability on the highway and are often greatly affected by less-than-ide-
al road conditions. Give that motorcyclist some space. Riding a motorcycle? 1. Avoid riding in the centre of your lane when traffic slows: You need to have a quick exit strategy when traffic suddenly comes to a halt. Stay to either the left or right hand side of your lane. This allows you to have an escape route should you have a driver who does not appear to be able to stop. 2. Being seen and protected is YOUR JOB: Wearing reflective clothing and/or bright colours can help other drivers see you. Wearing a good helmet, gloves, footwear and riding jacket and pants/chaps can often play a big role in whether or not you walk away from a crash. 3. Create as much space around yourself as possible: If you are on a highway with three lanes of traffic all flowing the same direction, don’t ride in the middle lane, ride in either the left or the right lane, thereby eliminating one potential for danger and allowing you a bit of a buffer zone. 4. Cancel your signals. Just finished turning? If your motorcycle is not equipped with self-cancelling signals, you’ll need to remember to cancel them or run the risk of sending out false messages to the other drivers around you. 5. Make sure your motorcycle is in good repair: Tires are one of the most important safety features of a motorcycle as you only have two of them keeping contact with the road. Over inflated tires can overheat quickly reducing traction, and the contact point with the pavement becomes very small. With underinflated tires your steering becomes very sluggish, and the potential of damaging the rim or tearing up the tire becomes a threat. Check your signals, headlight, fluids, brakes, cables, belts and chains as well.

Three Alberta companies participated in a Canadian mission to the U.S. Midwest to promote and raise awareness about Canadian food ingredients. The mission ran from December 12 to 14, 2017 and took representatives from BioNeutra, Radient Technologies Inc., and Naturally Splendid through intensive programs in Minneapolis and Chicago. The Canadian delegation featured sixteen companies representing a wide range of valueadded ingredients such as alternative proteins (plant and insect-based), natural sweeteners, food technologies, organic oats, flax oil, as well as functional and nutraceutical foods. The companies engaged prominent U.S. food processors through a series of business-to-business meeting programs in both cities. Over 25 U.S. food producers participated in meetings in both cities including Cargill, General Mills, Pipeline Foods, U.S. Commodities, Archer Daniels Midland, ConAgra Foods, Ingredion, PepsiCo, Wixon and many more. “Value-added food ingredients from Canadian crops coupled with Canadian food innovation technologies are more on-trend than ever before,” says Dusan Rnjak, trade relations officer with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AF). “The mission was a great way for our companies to meet with some of the largest US food processors, present their products and services and get immediate feedback. All Alberta companies are reporting numerous leads and immediate sales of two hundred thousand dollars.” The Canadian group also participated in several site visits including Cargill’s Research and Development Center, Merlin Development and Supervalue’s Test Kitchen in Minneapolis, as well as Biofortis Clinical Trials and Sensory Consumer Insight Center in Chicago. In addition, North Central Research Chefs Association in Minneapolis and College of DuPage Culinary and Hospitality Center in Chicago organized tastings and product demonstrations using selected ingredients from Canadian companies. The mission was organized in collaboration with the Canadian Consulates in Minneapolis and Chicago as well as the governments of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario. The U.S. food processing industry has about 21,000 companies generating $750 billion in revenue. According to the USDA’s Economic Research Service, beverage manufacturing is the largest component of the food sector’s total value-added followed by meat processing, bakery, fruits and vegetables, dairy, grains and oilseeds. The U.S. is Alberta’s largest export market for agriculture and agri-food products, totaling C$4 billion in 2016. For more information about opportunities in the U.S. market, contact Dusan Rnjak, trade development officer – Americas and Europe, AF, at 780-638-3851.

More paramedics, ambulances for Peace Region Fort St. John and Dawson Creek will see four new full-time paramedic positions and one new ambulance each as BC Emergency Health Services beefs up its personnel in the Peace Region. Both cities are staffed by a mix of full-time and on-call paramedics, and are both listed as top priorities in an ongoing review of BC Emergency Health Services Action Plan. The extra resources will provide a more stable staffing model for the region, the agency said in an announcement Monday. “This investment will help improve access to care for people living in the Peace River region,” Health Minister Adrian Dix said in a news release. “These additional ambulances and full time positions will help strengthen health-care services the community counts on, and make sure paramedics are there when people need them.” Fort St. John currently has eight full-time and 17 on-call paramedics. Dawson Creek currently has four full-time and 29 on-call paramedics. The two extra ambulances will support scheduled hospital transfers and ensure there are enough
resources to respond to medical emergencies, according to BCEHS. The extra resources will also ensure there’s an available ambulance in Chetwynd, Tumbler Ridge, and Hudson’s Hope. “We are very pleased to see additional ambulance and staff resources allocated in Fort St. John and are looking forward to improved service and response times,” Mayor Lori Ackerman said in a statement. “This is a step in the right direction, and we will continue to work with the province to address the needed services across the Northeast.” Job postings for the new positions will go up April 3 and the changes will come into effect between late May and early July, an agency spokesperson said. The timing will follow provisions laid out in the collective agreement between BCEHS and the union group representing paramedics, CUPE 873, the spokesperson said. BCEHS recently added paramedics and ambulances in Vancouver and Nanaimo, with more expected to be added to other communities also being reviewed under its action plan.

Northeast B.C. receives $567,000 in rural funding
Local governments and nonprofit groups in the Northeast are receiving more than $567,190 in rural development funding from the province. The province announced Thursday that five groups will split the rural dividend grants for a number of ongoing projects. They include: The Community Futures Development Corporation of Peace Liard is being awarded $112,200 to deliver a virtual entrepreneur training program, a junior Dragons’ Den and a mentorship program for grades 7 to 12, post-secondary and trades students in the Northeast. The District of Chetwynd is being awarded $20,000 to complete improvements to three local trails (Carvers Row, Connector Surerus Place Loop, Centurion Creek). Improvements include installing a
rope bridge, improving safety and increasing wheelchair accessibility. Futurpreneur Canada is being awarded $311,100 to continue delivering ThriveNorth programs in 2019. ThriveNorth supports rural and Indigenous youth in northern B.C. through entrepreneurial training and coaching, mentoring and financing for small projects. The Fort Nelson First Nation is being awarded $50,000 to complete business and technical forestry planning necessary to help secure a forest licence for birch leading stands. The Northern Rockies Regional Municipality is being awarded $73,890 to guide future economic development for the municipality, and ensure it’s well-positioned to attract and retain industries and businesses that will support longterm economic sustainability in the region.
