Fertilizer requirements for the spring With seeding set to begin over the next month, soil fertility and fertilizer management are on the minds of many producers in Alberta. Doon Pauly, agronomy research scientist with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, offers advice with spring fertilizer needs. Soil tests are still the best way to determine levels at the beginning of the season. “We can determine where we’re starting from as far as the nitrate that is present in the soil and what’s there for the plant at the start of the year,” says Pauly. “Phosphorus, potassium, and salinity don’t change much year to year. However, the tests show you trends over time that gives clues about your fertilizer management,” adds Pauly. “If your phosphorus is gradually improving, that is a sign you’re doing a pretty good job of matching at least what you are taking off the land.” “We hear lots of concern over nitrogen loss, so you need to consider your risk,” explains Pauly. “Your loss potential over winter is fairly low if you are in an area where you don’t typically have saturated conditions in the spring. If your normal practice in the spring is banding ahead of time, your loss potential is relatively low. We seldom have the conditions in a lot of the province where we have saturated soils after a spring fertilization event. We are not at a high risk for nitrogen losses every year.” Pauly adds that there is not a lot of loss difference between a two-pass and a one-pass system, however, “The one-pass system should be comparable as long as the soil is sealing behind your application equipment, and it is giving you the seed soil separation that it is designed to.” “If you don’t want to handle a huge amount of
dry fertilizer during the seeding operation, you can design a system where you are surface applying a little bit of nitrogen or a portion of that nitrogen early in the growing season and have it work very well,” says Pauly. “Short season crops are grown here. As long as the nitrogen is in the root zone by mid-June in most of the province, you can do a lot of different application strategies.” How the phosphorus is placed in your field depends on what has been previously done to the land. “You will tend to see a larger effect from seed-placed phosphorus if your land is more deficient or if your phosphorus use has been less that what you have been pulling off in crops,” adds Pauly. “You can get away with having phosphorus a little farther away from the seed if your soil tests higher, or if you have been applying a reasonable amount of phosphorus over time.” Pauly says that the soil test for potassium is fairly reliable. “If you are above 300 pounds of potassium based on zero to six inch sample, the chances of you seeing a benefit from fertilizing with potash are pretty slim. But, if you are below 200 pounds, then the chances of you seeing a response to your potassium on your cereal crops is actually pretty good.” Potassium can be a benefit to land that has been silaged or had a lot of hay production. Adds Pauly, “Where you are taking a lot of biomass off, potassium levels can be drawn down to the point that a chance of seeing a benefit from potassium fertilization is pretty good.”

Practicality first when buying new equipment
Breakfast Brief Corn Prices Heading for Heaven? Grain markets this morning are quietly in the green with corn prices and HRW wheat prices sitting the most propped up. In Grain Markets Today, Garrett walked us through how wheat prices did indeed end Tuesday in the green, driven by poor US winter wheat crop ratings and behind-schedule spring wheat seeding. Not everything was gained back that wheat prices lost on Monday, but Tuesday’s activity was more fundamental buying, whereas Monday’s losses could easily be considered more technical selling. This morning, Kansas City winter wheat prices are up significantly though as tinderbox-like conditions are evident in the Southern Plains. With winds between 30-40 MPH and gusts of up to 60 MPH, the likelihood of more wildfires has increased and so the market is pricing based on some of the risks. On the trade front, China has been trying to work with Europe to gain some backing to stand against the protectionist policies that US President Trump is trying to push out. [1] It’s been suggested by AgResource that some Chinese buyers are sourcing some Canadian and Brazilian soybeans for late summer movement. With US soybean prices still amongst the cheapest in the world though, you have to think it’s hard not to want some coverage with America. That is, before a tariff (if any) gets implemented. What Does China Replace US Sorghum With? There was a lot more attention paid to sorghum yesterday than any other crop as it grabbed a lot of headlines on the news that China was putting a 179% surcharge on US sorghum imports. [2] Since that sort of “tax” makes US sorghum uncompetitive with other grains, the question everyone is trying to answer is what other products can China import to replace the coarse grain potentially. A few weeks ago for our GrainCents readers, we walked through what China might import instead of soybeans, and the impact on the likes of barley, winter wheat, corn, and DDGs, as well as possibly peas. Here are some of those charts, the likes of which we provide on a daily basis for GrainCents readers – start your free 3-week trial today! Barley and feed wheat (under 12% protein) seem to be the logical options, with the Black Sea being the cheapest origins for these products. Russian barley exports are currently tracking about 95% ahead of last year’s pace with 4.6 million tonnes now exported. Sidenote: did you know that you can do sorghum basis deals on FarmLead? (and basis deals on most other futures markets-related crops). Go ahead and head to FarmLead Marketplace Post New Offer page and see the simple process. You can’t negotiate on basis anywhere but the FarmLead Marketplace! Looking for Premium in Corn Prices? With corn planting sitting a bit behind where we were a year ago, should corn prices start to add a little weather premium? Well, it is just April 18, so we’re about three weeks away from being worried about the state of progress in the field when it comes to US corn and Plant 2018. After all, we’ve seen the American farmer plant more than 40% of the US corn crop in a single week! However, historically-speaking, there is some seasonality that one can certainly enjoy when it comes to grain prices at this time of year. That being said, there are no guarantees that corn prices will climb in the next two months through the end of June, and today, new crop December 2018 corn prices in Chicago are sitting close to $4.10 USD /bushel. The last time we saw those sort of corn prices for the new crop was last June/July, and before that, June 2016. To be clear, you’ve only had the opportunity twice in the past two years for these levels of corn prices. Of course, there’s South America to think about. Last week we saw the USDA downgrade the Brazilian and Argentine corn crops to 92 million and 33 million tonnes respectively. For Brazil, the downgrade is due to a combination of lower acres and some weather delays/damage. Last week, for corn GrainCents readers, we also looked into other private and public estimates of the Brazilian corn crop. One notable figure’s estimates always garner a headline is Dr. Michael Cordonnier of Soybean and Corn Advisor. This week, Dr. Cordonnier raised his estimate for the Brazilian crop by 1 million tonnes to 87 million. The good doctor notes that conditions in central Brazil are looking pretty deluxe, but rain is needed in southern areas of the South American country. [3] Overall, the USDA says that less corn will get planted in the US in 2018/19, but with a smaller crop in South America and trade risk with China, is corn the safer bet for many American farmers? To growth,

Many factors come into play when deciding to purchase new farm equipment - and it doesn’t always depend on what happened during the last harvest. Cervus Equipment and Rocky Mountain Equipment stated they saw increased earnings in 2017, partially attributing success to a good harvest. Combined with manufacturers’ incentive payment on sales of new equipment in 2017, Cervus says there was a 20 per cent increase in new equipment sales over 2016. Brian Sewell of Sewell Grain Farms in southern Alberta recently upgraded his air seeder to one that had section control technology and a larger tank to improve efficiency. The upgrade comes on the heels of the lowest production he has had in 20 years due to dry conditions last year. Cost saving considerations Sewell says whenever they are looking to buy a new piece of equipment, they think about cost savings and stick to a general rule. “Say we are going to spend $100,000 upgrading,” Sewell explains. “If we can’t save eight to 10 per cent on that investment or get a return on it, we don’t normally buy anything. We typically like to hang on to our equipment for a while and get the most amount of acres we can out of the investment.” In this case, he says they looked at the numbers with section control and efficiency and figured it would work even in a year where the harvest was not good. Sewell Grain Farms grows yellow peas, canola, barley and wheat. Buying versus leasing There’s a lot to consider when heading into town to upgrade your equipment, whether you are buying or leasing. Lance Stockbrugger, who is a chartered accountant and farmer from Englefeld, Sask., says leasing is a relatively new tool for producers and a majority tend to stick to the ‘tried and true’ practice of buying. “They understand it, they own the piece of equipment they under-
stand there are no surprises, they don’t have to give it back in a certain time period, they want to keep it for a long period of time,” Stockbrugger says. Stockbrugger says it’s about peace of mind because they know what’s all involved when they own a piece of equipment versus when they lease, which they might not understand everything. Varied conditions Time will tell how 2018 earnings compare to 2017 as many farmers saw tough growing and harvest conditions in 2017. Producers across the prairies described last year’s harvest as spotty, with some areas challenged at harvest and others having a good year - all depending on how regions were impacted by weather - a thought echoed by Paul Heglund who farms in the Rural Municipality of Reno in southwest Saskatchewan. Heglund says he knows of several areas that had dismal crops and where prices have been weak, adding he sold last year’s crops at prices three-quarters of what he did the year before. However, he says that hasn’t stopped some farmers he knows from buying equipment. Heglund says he tends to base his decisions on replacing equipment when they do not operate efficiently, like he did when he replaced a few tractors a couple of years ago. Sewell adds it’s important to take the emotion out of the decision to purchase new equipment and stick to the financial facts of the farm. Working with a strong management team also helps in the decisionmaking. Bottom line When it comes to farm equipment investments, a variety of factors go into the decision-making process. Farm plans and dealer incentives have a role, as does the choice between leasing and buying. Overall, there’s no single template to use when deciding on whether to get new equipment. Grain handle drops in CN’s first quarter
Montreal-based CN on Monday booked net income of $741 million on total revenues of $3.194 billion for its quarter ending March 31, down from $884 million on $3.206 billion in the year-earlier period. Carloads were down 12 per cent in CN’s grain and fertilizers segment, at 145,000, for segment revenue of $539 million, down 11 per cent. Revenue per grain/fertilizer carload rose just $16, to $3,717. In other segments, revenue from petroleum and chemical traffic dropped three per cent, to $564 million; forest products, down six per cent, to $422 million, and automotive, down four per cent, to $197 million. Intermodal and coal revenue rose 10 per cent to $814 million and $142 million respectively, while metals and minerals revenue rose seven per cent to $388 million. Lower revenue ton miles (RTMs, gauging freight’s relative weight and distance hauled) stemmed from “challenging operating conditions, including harsh winter weather and low network resiliency,” CN said, also noting currency impacts from a stronger Canadian dollar.
Licensed • Insured 16 Years of Experience
Higher fuel surcharges and freight rates helped offset those drops, CN said. Operating expenses, meanwhile, rose nine per cent to $2.164 billion on the same “challenging operating conditions” as well as higher fuel prices and training costs for new employees, offset in part by the stronger loonie.

educed traffic in grain, fertilizers and petroleum, against increased costs from “challenging operating conditions,” ate into the first-quarter bottom line for Canadian National Railway (CN).
Custom Crop Spraying
Citing “weaker than expected” RTMs in Q1 and a “longer than anticipated construction period” on its infrastructure capacity projects this year, CN on Monday pared its full-year earnings outlook for 2018 to $5.10-$5.25 per share, down from its initial outlook of $5.20-$5.40. However, interim CEO J.J. Ruest said in CN’s release that the company “has turned the corner on a difficult quarter and winter. “Our metrics are showing sustained, sequential improvement, and that momentum will build as we continue to expand track capacity, add crews and bring on new locomotives,” he said. Ruest also noted CN’s plans for increased capital spending, including about $400 million in new track infrastructure, “particularly in Western Canada, to build capacity and improve resiliency.” — AGCanada.com Network

All prices are in Canadian dollars per metric tonne Market Comments - Values for feed barley, corn and wheat continued to inch higher over the past two weeks, increasing by an average of $5/T across the Prairies. Corn DDGS values remained largely unchanged while soybean and canola meal gained $10-20/T. Feed peas values benefited from strong demand, trading for 270/T in Manitoba, $265-270/T in Saskatchewan, and $260-265/T in Alberta.* Models have been updated to reflect the latest nutrient compositions of feed ingredients, which is done periodically. “Feed Pea / Faba Bean Benchmark - The feed pea/faba bean feed benchmarks are intended to be used as a pricing reference. This benchmark provides a consistent and unbiased estimate of the feeding value of peas and low tannin faba beans in the three regions shown. Feed peas and faba beans will trade at various differentials to the benchmark based on local supply/demand, quality differences and other contract terms. Feed Pea / Faba Bean Feed Benchmark Calculation - The feed pea/faba bean feed benchmarks are an estimate of the feeding value of dry peas/low tannin faba beans in Western Canada, based on the value of competing feed ingredients in swine rations. Biweekly, tradable prices for the major feed ingredients are collected for the three regions shown above. These prices are then entered into a least cost feed formulation that is typical for grower-finisher swine in Western Canada. A feeding value is then derived for feed peas/ faba beans based on their nutritional characteristics and the prices of the competing feed ingredients. The least cost feed formulation was developed in consultation with the Prairie Swine Centre. In addition to the feed ingredients shown above, the feed formulation also includes canola oil, synthetic lysine, synthetic methionine, synthetic threonine, synthetic tryptophan, mono-dicalcium phosphate, limestone, salt, vitamins and minerals.
Specialists at Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AF) are working to have fields predetermined for the 2018 insect survey season and are looking for assistance from agrologists and producers across Alberta. This year, the survey teams would like to check pea and wheat fields. They will survey for pea leaf weevil in late spring and survey for wheat midge and wheat stem sawfly in the fall after harvest. “In addition to the rest of the province, we are looking for pea fields up into the Peace Country because the pea leaf weevil has been confirmed into that area, and we want to expand our survey there,” says Scott Meers, insect management specialist with AF. “We are looking for fields that producers would be happy to have us check. For allowing us on their fields, we will provide those producers with a report of the survey results.” Meers would also like to increase
in the number of bertha army worm traps in Alberta. “We are trying to get four to five traps per county across the province. If you are interested, we will hook you up with all the materials you will need.” For agrologists and producers who have monitored for the bertha army worm adults in the past, now is a good time to check those traps to see if they need to be repaired or replaced. “They are plastic, and plastic in the wind and sunshine tends to break down after time. Let us know if they need to be upgraded or replaced,” adds Meers. Vaccine for rabbit haemorrhagic disease available from B.C. vets The vaccines are being distributed to 50 B.C. veterinary clinics that ordered it. To meet the remaining demand, a second batch of the vaccine is expected in early May. The Ministry of Agriculture ordered the vaccine from a manufacturer in France in March, following the first-ever B.C. diagnosis of the disease on Vancouver Island. The vaccine that provides the best protection is available only through one manufacturer in France. The vaccine needed to be imported by the Province through a specialized emergency-use federal-permitting process. The first shipment included all the vaccines the manufacturer had available. This included 1,090 individual doses of the vaccine and 42 multi-dose vials that are being distributed to vet clinics that ordered it following cases of the disease in their area. It is also being distributed to clinics in other parts of B.C. that have clients who are concerned about protecting their rabbits from the quickly spreading disease. Rabbit haemorrhagic disease is an extremely infectious and lethal disease that causes internal bleeding and organ damage in rabbits. Most affected rabbits die suddenly, but can show signs of listlessness, lack of co-ordination, changes in behaviour, or trouble breathing before death. There is often bleeding from the nose at the time of death. Once infected, signs of illness occur
quickly, usually within one to nine days. Pet owners should monitor their rabbits daily for signs of illness, and contact their veterinarian immediately with any concerns. While there is no threat to humans or other domestic animals, in addition to rabbit owners taking precautions, the public is advised not to move domestic rabbits into the wild at any time. As well, rabbit owners should take precautions when disposing of any rabbit remains. Rabbit owners, who want more information about how to keep their pets safe, can consult with their veterinarian, or review an SPCA factsheet: http://spca.bc.ca/ news/bc-spca-suspends-intake-ofrabbits-due-to-disease/

Canada’s maple industry – fully matured or untapped potential? Nothing says Canadian like maple syrup. And it is one of the fastest growing sectors in all of agriculture. Strong demand for maple syrup domestically and internationally has fueled expansion of the Canadian maple syrup industry. Over the past 10 years, Canadian production of maple products has increased nearly 2.5 times with exports increasing more than 1.5 times. Canada is not the only country benefiting from the increased demand. U.S. maple producers are also looking to capitalize on rising market opportunities. How does the growth in Canada’s maple industry compare to the U.S.? And what does this mean for the future of our industry? Value increasing faster rate than production Over the past 10 years, production and value of maple syrup have been trending higher. Canadian maple syrup production has increased nearly

12% per year. Even more impressive is the value of maple syrup production that has climbed 15% per year. In 2017, Canada produced 12.5 million gallons of maple syrup worth $493.7 million dollars, according to Statistics Canada. Supply controls established at the farm level in Quebec prevented supply from growing at a pace that exceeded the growth in demand. In 2017, Quebec accounted for 92% of the total Canadian production followed by New Brunswick and Ontario with 4% and 3% respectfully. This dominant position of Quebec in the supply chain grants the ability to influence prices in the marketplace. Production growth has been achieved through expansion (increase in the number of maple taps) and most importantly through significant productivity gains (maple syrup per tap). U.S. production increasing significantly but not as fast as Canada Balancing supply with demand is always a delicate operation. Canada continues to be the dominant player in the maple syrup industry, producing roughly 70% of the world maple syrup. While impressive, Canada’s dominance in the industry has eroded over the past 15 years as U.S. producers in Vermont, Maine, and New York continue to find opportunities in the maple market as prices of maple syrup remain elevated. Due to large increases in U.S. production, Canada’s market share has evolved over the years. It stood at more than 80% in 2004. But the Canadian industry has expanded at a faster pace in Canada over the last ten years. Since 2008, maple syrup production in Canada increased 144% compared to 123% in the U.S. Canadian maple trade balance strengthening Maple syrup exports have increased 1.6 time to $382 million, accounting for 77 per cent of total maple receipts. Strong demand for maple products in the U.S. and around the world has lead to an increase in Canada’s maple trade balance. Over the past 10 years, Canada’s trade balance (total export – total imports) has increased 60% to $365 million due to a 63% increase in exports. The Canadian maple syrup industry remains a strong and growing sector. It is expected that production will continue expanding assuming weather is favourable. The challenge for the Canadian industry is to balance future growth in demand with proportional increases in production that minimize price fluctuations.

Wheat markets experienced notable up and down gyrations over the past two months as emerging issues with the North American spring weather have countered the still burdensome weight of abundant global supply. Price action in United States wheat futures markets has been a primary feature of overall grain market action as traders this week focused on heightened rain chances for drought-affected areas of the southern U.S. Plains hard red winter wheat, brushing aside last weekend’s freezing temperatures that likely caused some localized damage. Traders so far seem to ignore the possibility that coming rain events may actually encourage some producers facing low yields to tear up hard red winter wheat and replace it with other spring-seeded crops. Spillover price pressure Meanwhile, over the past two weeks, the spring wheat market faced spillover price pressure. That’s despite North American spring wheat planting remaining on hold across the northern U.S. Plains and Canadian Prairies due to recent cold temperatures and more snow. It appears that after a brief reprieve in early April, Minneapolis spring wheat futures are getting knocked back down to the mat. Minnie May futures have tested, but pulled back from notable overhead chart resistance in US $6.30 to $6.40 per bushel region. The U.S. Department of Agriculture currently projects 2018 spring wheat acreage to increase 15 per cent from last year to 12.6 million. But with snow on the ground and below-average temperatures across the northern U.S. Plains and Canadian Prairies extending well into in April, one wonders if weather issues will again generate price support. Slowed U.S. planting The USDA reported U.S. spring wheat planting advanced slower than the trade anticipated over the past week up to April 15, inching just a single percentage point to three per cent complete, whereas the market expected a three-point advance. Progress is now running 12 percentage points behind the five-year average and nine points behind last year. That could return some buying interest to the spring wheat market should planting delays continue, especially considering that it will take time for last weekend’s major snowfall to melt and the ground to warm up. Grain company cash bids across the Western Canada for benchmark No. 1 Canada Western red spring wheat (13.5 per cent protein) have backed off from $7 a bushel territory. They now look more like $6.70 to $6.80 per bushel in Alberta with the odd quote still in the $6.90s. In Saskatchewan, bids from $6.50 to $6.70 are high end of the market, and $6.50 to as much as $6.82 in Manitoba.

Long winter leaves cattle producers scrambling for hay A long, cold winter has eaten away at hay supplies and is putting the squeeze on cattle producers, particularly those in drier areas of southern and central Saskatchewan.
enough feed if people don’t have a large carryover from previous years.” Last week’s snow is a catch-22 - it extends winter and could delay planting, but the moisture is needed in southern and central regions to replenish dugouts and help pastures.
“I get lots of calls from people looking for hay, but it’s a scarce commodity,” says Travis Peardon, a livestock and feed extension specialist with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture in Outlook, about an hour south of Saskatoon. “I don’t know if anyone has extra hay that they are willing to part with.” Lower hay production in 2017 The year-end provincial crop report estimated dry land hay yields at only 1.1 tons per acre for alfalfa, compared to 1.6 tons in the previous year.
The plan now is to stretch feed supplies until the pastures are ready for grazing several weeks down the road. “Any time you are looking at an early turn out of cows, you definitely risk hurting grass production for the year,” Peardon says. Bottom line Last fall’s reduced hay yields, combined with extended winter weather, means some Saskatchewan cattle producers are scrambling for feed and make what they have left stretch until pastures are ready for grazing. Article by: Neil Billinger
“It would have put people in a really close situation of getting through the winter,” says Rick Toney, chair of the Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association. “Now, it’s a prolonged winter and there are people looking to buy hay.” Temperatures were eight to 10 degrees below normal during the first half of April. Searching for feed Cows with young calves need additional feed to meet their energy requirements. Feed barley is usually the go-to grain that supplements a ration containing straw.
40 YEAR WARRANTY
Peardon says there doesn’t seem to be much feed barley around and producers are waiting two to three weeks to get pellets from feed mills. “It’s kind of a scramble out there to find

Bareback: to be or not to be, that is the question
Some are a fan of bareback riding and some are not. As a clinician I suggest all the time to people to ride bareback. I ride bareback myself on occasion throughout the year. The reason I do and the reason I suggest others do is because it accesses muscles and balance that I cannot achieve in the saddle. Ten minutes a day bareback for two weeks improves my riding more than I can in two months in the saddle or in a year. The 10 minutes I spend will be done with enough activity that when I slide off it’s hard to walk. I want my groin muscles to know they did something. I hold myself up slightly with the inside of my thighs so my seat bones are not digging or bouncing on my horses back and it also works our muscles more. If I ride actively enough for 10 minutes, my goal is to be so sore enough in 5 days that I need 2 days off to recover. Many people will say that’s ridiculous or I don’t want to hurt or some other excuse but I figure a little on purpose muscle soreness is better than falling off
by accident and having a trip to the hospital. I know for a fact it helps my quality of riding in the saddle, which I know my horse will appreciate. While riding I consciously am trying to avoid bouncing or just sitting there like I’m on a couch. The reason for me is to wake up some muscle and balance that has gone dormant. Riding bareback without a pad and doing it well is a big step and doesn’t give any protection to the horses back if you are not riding real well. Using a good quality bareback pad is a great way to protect the horses back and keep your pants clean. A good pad should also be built to have a real sticky surface to sit on. The ones we have at The Horse Ranch have 100 percent wool for the horses back and rough out leather to sit on which is like Velcro. You can also put your saddle pad under the bareback pad to help distribute your weight for added comfort for the horse. If your going to use bareback riding as a tool to sharpen your skills as
a rider do enough to make yourself sore, yes sore, in 2 weeks you would be amazed at the difference in your riding. Always try to leave your legs loose and relaxed when riding unless you are asking your horse to do something like turn or go faster. If walking is all it takes for you to get sore well that tells you how weak the muscles are and they need to be developed. When the muscles are in shape you could canter up and down hills, spin, jump, whatever you like for 20 minutes and you would feel nothing. Your confidence and ability to stay on vastly improves, there fore you make your horse happier and yourself safer. You might hear bareback riding will ruin their backs. I’ve been riding bareback all my life and have horses that were 25 and still going strong with backs that were strong and healthy. In my experience I have not ever seen a horse damaged from occasionally riding bareback. Some days I’ve had to ride for hours because the horses pulled out and we had to go on foot and find them
packing only a halter to catch them. Then jump on bareback chase them back to camp 10 miles. I also used to round up my horses every morning bareback for 100 days straight each year for 15 years bringing them into camp. I ride mostly with a saddle but I’ve found great benefit riding bareback and definitely feel weak at the start and strong at the end of my 2 weeks or whatever length I choose to practice. However as I mentioned earlier if you just sit there your sit bones dig into the horses back and can make them uncomfortable and maybe sore. Use the inside of your thighs to carry you and lift your sit bones. To know what it feels like sit on someone’s lap and have them sit on yours to feel the sit bones and how to lift them. Sit bones stabbing you in the thigh doesn’t feel good. Start at whatever speed you can stay on at then build to whatever you can handle as the time goes on and towards whatever goal you’ve set. Have fun, keep their backs happy, get strong and ride better.

Factors to consider before breeding your mare By Dr. Christa Harder Coming into spring is the season is when we start thinking about breeding mares. However this may be easier said than done. Horses have traditionally been selected for performance traits rather than fertility therefore they tend to be less fertile than other species. In this article I hope to touch on some important factors that one should consider before breeding and also factors to consider when it comes time to breed your mare. When considering a mare to breed we start by looking at her health history and the age of the mare. Peak fertility of a mare is at 6-7 years of age and declines rapidly after age 15. If a mare has had a foal or several foals in her younger years she will also be more likely to get pregnant at a later age than a mare that is over 15 years old that is being bred for the first time. Many healthy mares can produce foals well into their 20’s but if you are considering breeding your mare it is wise to begin the process before age 15. What is the mare’s physical conformation? Some diseases and or lameness problems have a heritable component. For example, if she has poor feet and has developed navicular there is a chance she could pass that on to her offspring. Additionally pregnancy can be hard on a lame mare because the additional weight of the pregnancy, puts more strain on her joints. There are several genetic diseases that a mare can pass on to her foal such as HYPP, PSSM etc. therefore if you know your mare has a genetic disease discuss it with your veterinarian first before breeding her. Once you’ve decided you want to breed your mare it is very helpful to start tracking her cycles. Horses are seasonal breeders that rely on a long day length to cycle normally so you may have noticed your mare coming into stronger/ more regular heat cycles this time of year. A mare cycles or ovulates every 21 days with “heat” or when they are receptive to the stallion lasting on average about 5 days. If you notice your mare has come into heat (swishing her tails, rubbing it up on the fence, urinating frequently and interested in geldings/stallions) write it down on a calendar and then also record how long she is in heat. If she has regular cycles you will be able to accurately predict when she will come in next and plan for a time that she should visit a stallion or get bred via artificial insemination. Once you’ve tracked her cycles we always recommend booking mares in for a breeding soundness evaluation at the vet clinic at least a month before wanting to start breeding. At the Dawson Creek Veterinary Clinic, we will do a physical exam (examine vaginal conformation)
and discuss her past breeding/foaling history (if she’s had foals before). Some mares have tipped vaginal conformation which can put them at higher risk of developing a vaginal or uterine infections. Once mares with this conformation are confirmed pregnant we will perform a caslick’s procedure where we stitch the upper half of her vulva to help prevent uterine infections. During this exam we will also look for vaginal tears from previous foals which may lead to a higher risk delivery. We will then perform an ultrasound exam of her uterus and ovaries to determine where she is at in her cycle as well as identify abnormalities of her ovaries and show us if there are any cysts or fluid in her uterus. If the mare has had trouble getting pregnant in the past or to give us more information on the health of her reproductive tract we will perform a uterine biopsy, uterine culture and uterine cytology. This is where small samples from her uterine lining are collected and sent to the lab to evaluate for fibrosis, infection, inflammation or other problems that may affect her ability to conceive or maintain a pregnancy. If everything is clean on the breeding soundness exam one must decide what stallion/semen the mare will get bred with. Highest success (approximately 70%) of getting pregnant is still live cover with a stallion turned out with a mare. However that may not be an option for stallion/ mare safety therefore many breeding farms will tease (walk mare by stud) mares and hand breed every other day while the mare is receptive to the stallion. There are various reasons where natural service is not an option whether it be that a stallion is being used for performance or perhaps the location of the stallion. In this case the mare can be artificially inseminated with either chilled semen or frozen semen. Artificial Insemination with Cooled semen has a 60% success rate but requires that we ultrasound the mare regularly to identify where she is at in her cycle before getting semen shipped. Ideally we breed the mare with the cooled semen before she ovulates since the semen will usually last about 24 to 72 hours in the mare. Most stallion owners, collect and ship semen about 3 days per week so this can be logistically very difficult when coordinating couriers/ flights. We tend to breed more mares at our clinic with frozen semen since it can be store at the clinic indefinitely in liquid nitrogen tanks. Conception rates with frozen semen is on average 50%. When breeding a mare with frozen semen we ultrasound the mare every 6 hours when she is in heat, in an effort to breed the mare within 6 hours of ovulation because frozen semen has a much shorter period of time that it is viable once it is thawed. Some mares may get some inflammation in response to the semen so we typically
Dawson Creek Veterinary Clinic
flush the uterus after breeding with frozen semen to minimize this response. Mares can be checked for pregnancy as early as 14 days post breeding with an ultrasound. We will often try and check these mares before 17 days post breeding to identify if they are pregnant with twins. Twins are generally not viable and if we identify this early enough we can manage this more effectively. Pregnancy in mares lasts anywhere from 320360 days with most mares averaging about 340 days. Therefore, do not be alarmed if she foals a bit before or after the average due date. Breeding mares can be both an extremely rewarding and extremely frustrating. Contact the Dawson Creek Veterinary Clinic for your breeding questions/needs. We aim to give you more insight on your best chances of getting your mare pregnant and setting realistic goals.

Chef Matty P’s mongo mango beef and spring onions Ingredients 2 teaspoons vegetable oil 1 tablespoon finely chopped garlic 1/2 teaspoon grated fresh ginger root 1/2 cup soy sauce 1/2 cup water 1/2 cup of mango juice 2/3 cup dark brown sugar 1 pound beef flank steak, sliced 1/4 inch thick on the diagonal 1/4 cup cornstarch 1 cup vegetable oil for frying 2 bunches green onions, cut in 2-inch lengths
cornstarch into the beef, coating it thoroughly. Allow the beef and cornstarch to sit until most of the juices from the meat have been absorbed by the cornstarch, about 10 minutes. Heat the vegetable oil in a deep-sided skillet or wok to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Shake excess cornstarch from the beef slices, and drop them into the hot oil, a few at a time. Stir briefly, and fry until the edges become crisp and start to brown, about 2 minutes. Remove the beef from the oil with a large slotted spoon, and allow to drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
Pour the oil out of the skillet or wok, and return the pan to medium heat. Return the beef slices to the pan, stir briefly, and pour in the reserved sauce. Stir once or twice to combine, and add the green onions. Bring the mixture to a boil, and cook until the onions have softened and turned bright green, about 2 minutes. Tip Aluminum foil helps keep food moist, ensures it cooks evenly, keeps leftovers fresh, and makes clean-up easy.
This is it. Heat 2 teaspoons of vegetable oil in a saucepan over medium heat, and cook and stir the garlic and ginger until they release their fragrance, about 30 seconds. Pour in the soy sauce, mango, water, and brown sugar. Raise the heat to medium-high, and stir 4 minutes, until the sugar has dissolved and the sauce boils and slightly thickens. Remove sauce from the heat, and set aside. Place the sliced beef into a bowl, and stir the

Pho sure, it’s good says Jamie Oliver Method to the madness Preheat the oven to 180ºC/350ºF/ gas 4. Bash and crack the ginger and place in a very large casserole pan with the beef bones, cinnamon, cloves and star anise. Drizzle with sesame oil and roast for 2 hours, then transfer the pan to the hob over a medium heat and cover the bones with 3.5 litres of water. Bash the lemongrass and add along with the soy and fish sauces, then simmer on a low heat for 2 hours. Skim off any fat from the surface and discard (if you make the broth in advance and let it cool, the fat will solidify on the top and will be super-easy to remove). To make the brined garlic, simply peel and finely slice the garlic and put into a little dish with the sugar and a good pinch of sea salt. Stir in

the skirt steak, pat with groundnut oil, then sear, turning every minute, for 6 to 8 minutes, or until mediumrare (depending on the thickness of your steak). You want it medium-rare, because when you pour the hot broth over the top it will gently cook it through, should you want it to. Remove to a board to rest, then slice up finely and take to the table along with the pan of broth. Get everyone to pimp their own bowls with all the bits and pieces, then pour over some ladlefuls of hot broth. Serve with bottles of hot chilli sauce, fish sauce and soy sauce on the side to perfect the broth to taste.

Suit up for Jonny Vega$’ flamin’ fillet steak flambé Ingredients 1 sprig of fresh rosemary 2 sprigs of fresh thyme 1 teaspoon red wine vinegar olive oil 2 x 150 g centre-cut fillet steaks , ideally 2.5cm thick 100 g chestnut mushrooms ½ a bunch of fresh flat-leaf parsley , (15g) 25 g unsalted butter 10 ml brandy 50 ml red wine 100 ml single cream 1 teaspoon wholegrain or French mustard 1 teaspoon English mustard SHOESTRING FRIES 400 g Maris Piper potatoes 1 litre vegetable oil , for frying PEPPER SPRINKLE ¼ of a red pepper ¼ of an orange pepper ¼ of a yellow pepper extra virgin olive oil Roll the dice
Pick the rosemary and thyme into a pestle and mortar, add a good pinch of black pepper, pour in the red wine vinegar and 1 tablespoon of olive oil, then bash to a paste. Rub the paste all over the steaks and leave to marinate for 30 minutes. For the shoestring fries, peel the potatoes and very finely slice into matchsticks using a mandolin (use the guard!), then soak in a bowl of water for 30 minutes to remove the starch. When you’re ready to cook the fries, half-fill a sturdy pan with vegetable oil and heat to 180ºC (or use a deep-fryer). Drain the potatoes and pat dry with kitchen paper, then carefully add to the oil and fry for 2 to 3 minutes, or until golden and cooked through – you may need to work in batches. Remove to kitchen paper to drain, then season with sea salt. Deseed and finely dice the peppers, then dress with extra virgin olive oil and put aside. Quarter the mushrooms, then pick and finely chop the parsley. Place a frying pan on a high heat so it’s screaming hot. Brush the herbs off the steaks, then place
the steaks in the pan, adding a drizzle of olive oil and knob of butter. Cook for 6 minutes in total (completing everything up to the end of step 11 in this time), turning regularly and keeping them moving in the pan, making sure to sear the edges and baste with the juices, as you go. When the butter turns dark golden, and your steak has good colour and character, add the mushrooms and a pinch of salt and pepper – jiggle the pan to keep things moving. Pour in the splash of brandy, tilt the pan to flambé, then when the flames subside, add a swig of red wine and reduce by half. Drizzle in the cream, turning the steaks in the sauce to coat, and keep cooking until the steaks are nicely coated (briefly remove the steaks from the pan at this stage if your sauce is taking a while to reduce to avoid overcooking). Sprinkle over the parsley, add the mustards, then stir through. Slice the steaks in half, place on a warmed plate and drizzle with the sauce, then divide up the fries and scatter over the dressed pepper.

Tip the peppercorns into a blender with 1 tablespoon of salt, strip in the rosemary leaves, then blitz to a fine dust. Sprinkle the flavoured dust over the beef, and pat all over. Place a large roasting tray over a medium-high heat, carefully sear the beef on all sides to seal, then remove the tray from the heat and transfer to the oven. Immediately reduce the temperature to 180ºC/350ºF/gas 4 and roast for 50 minutes – this will give you medium-rare (cook for a little longer, if you prefer), then remove to a board. Cover and leave to rest for 30 minutes. Turn the oven up to 220ºC/425ºF/ gas 7 and adjust the oven shelves to the centre position. Divide the dripping evenly between a 6-well deep Yorkshire pudding tray (8.3g per well, if you want to be super-scientific about it!), then place on the middle shelf of the oven for 5 minutes, or until the fat is smoking hot. For the gravy, place the bones in a large roasting tray. Trim, wash and roughly chop the leeks, and quarter the unpeeled onions, then add to the tray and roast for 45 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove the bones and veg to a large pot, keeping the tray of juices to one side. Top up the pot with 2.5 litres of water, bring to the boil, then reduce to a simmer for at least 2 hours 30 minutes, or until the liquid has reduced by half. Once the stock has reduced by half, place the roasting tray over a medium heat on the hob, add the flour and stir well to pick up any sticky bits from the bottom of the tray. Pour in the wine and port, leave to bubble away for 1 minute, then gradually whisk in a few ladles of the stock, before tipping back into the stock pot. Simmer gently for a further 2 hours, or until you reach your desired consistency. Strain the gravy, skimming off any fat from the surface, then adjust the seasoning, if needed. Keep aside to reheat at the last minute. When you’re ready to prep and cook the beef, remove from the

Be a host farm or ranch for Alberta Open Farm Days Farmers and ranchers are invited to share stories, educate and expand their markets as hosts for Alberta Open Farm Days, August 18 and 19, 2018. Alberta Open Farm Days is a province-wide, two-day event that showcases agriculture, local food, and ag-tourism by inviting the public to come out and directly experience the farm. “Open Farm Days benefits both host farms and the visitors,” says Colin Gosselin, senior project coordinator with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. “Albertans gain a better understanding of where their food comes from, and host farms make a direct connection to new
customers.” Leaman Exchange participated in Alberta Open Farm Days for the first time in 2017. Madison Sharman found the weekend was well worth the effort for her family’s farm. “We were able to promote ourselves to people who we wouldn’t normally be able to reach out to, so it was fantastic event for that.” “I feel like lots of people want that genuine connection now. To talk with somebody and learn with your hands how to do something, or to actually touch the chicken, see the eggs, see where all that stuff comes from. We wanted to share that and what we love,” she adds.
“We met so many wonderful people in our area and connected with other farms,” says Sharman. “It’s not only bringing people from the city out to the farms, but it’s bringing other farms closer together, too.”
types of farms that have opened their doors to Open Farm Days in the past,” adds Gosselin. “They give a quick overview of participants’ experiences, along with tips for hosting an open house.”
Alberta Open Farm Days Host Farm Registration is open until May 31, 2018.
Humphrey and Terry Banack operate a conventional grain and oilseed farm near Round Hill. The Jungle Farm is an established ag-tourism business. Daniel Chappell of Country Thyme Farm is a local food producer with a Farm Box Program. For more information about Alberta Open Farm Days, contact Colin Gosselin at 780-968-3518.
Alberta Agriculture and Forestry produced three videos to help out farms that may be considering participating in Open Farm Days, but may not know where to start. “These videos are a great resource because they profile some of the different

Online cattle market AgriClear goes dark TMX, which operates the Toronto-based TSX stock exchange among other services, announced on AgriClear’s lone remaining web page that the AgriClear platform and website have been decommissioned, effective Monday (April 16). “As part of the active management of our investments in innovation initiatives, we have decided to discontinue AgriClear’s business operations and focus on other opportunities,” a TMX spokesperson said Tuesday via email. TMX, in partnership with its then-subsidiary, energy trading operation NGX, launched AgriClear in mid-2015, billing it as “North America’s premier online cattle transaction and payment platform,” dealing in physical cattle sales rather
than cattle futures. Buyers and sellers in Canada and the U.S. were meant to use the clearing system to post and view videos of live cattle, negotiate terms, close deals and arrange delivery via their mobile devices, for a charge of $6 per head to the buyer and seller per transaction. “Backed by the financial support and clearing expertise of these two entities, clients are assured of receiving payment for delivered cattle and receiving cattle as negotiated,” TSX and NGX said of AgriClear last year. TMX’s spokesperson said Tuesday no transactions were left unresolved in the wake of AgriClear’s shutdown, and offered “thanks to the members of the AgriClear community for their support over the years.”

Here are five tips for managing parasites in your herd Using the right dosage of the right product at the right time are three of those five key practices By Beef Cattle Research Council Blog Resistance is something we currently hear a lot about in agriculture, including the issue of parasite resistance in beef cattle. This raises questions about parasite management decisions. How can livestock operators effectively manage internal parasites in their herds? What can they do to reduce the risk of parasite resistance? Parasites are a normal part of the gut flora of pastured cattle. Left unmanaged, however, internal parasites can cause insidious production losses including a reduction in weights. Grazing management, proper biosecurity protocols, monitoring parasite loads, and strategic deworming are all tools producers can use to manage for parasites, Dr. John Gilleard, of the University of Calgary’s faculty of veterinary medicine, said during a recent BCRC webinar. He also suggested following the ‘Five C’s’: Correct product: Using two separate classes of parasite control products with two different modes of action (i.e. fenbendazole and ivermectin) is most effective.
Correct animal: Different classes of cattle have different parasite challenges. Work with a veterinarian to identify the unique needs of your cows, grass stocker cattle, weaned calves, or feeder cattle. Correct dosage: Parasite control drugs are administered based on weight. Using the incorrect dosage, particularly underdosing, may put a herd at risk of resistance. If in doubt, round up to ensure the animal receives enough product. However, it is best to weigh each animal and determine each dose accordingly. Correct timing: Fall-only application of a dual internal/external parasite pour-on product may not adequately protect cattle against internal roundworms. Spring and fall application of an internal parasite product (i.e. fenbendazole) may be necessary, but this should be based on a herd risk analysis. Check for efficacy: Conducting fecal egg counts in manure samples following control will help you determine if your strategy is working. Because a herd’s parasite load is not evenly distributed, some animals, particularly those in good condition, may be unaffected by parasites. Producers may opt to leave 10 to 20 per cent of their healthiest cattle untreated to slow the rate of resistance development. The webinar can be found at the Beef Cattle Research Council website by clicking on ‘Managing Internal Parasites.’ (Gilleard’s presentation begins about 13 minutes into the webinar.) AGCanada.com

Smartphone app for aphid control in cereal crops Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada has released a smartphone app called the Cereal Aphid Manager to help producers control the pest. Producers count both aphids and beneficials that eat them (at a minimum of five locations), and the app predicts what the aphid population will be in seven days and recommends whether to

Everyone has their own specific personality that make up the distinct qualities that identify them as a person. When it comes to working a dog the handlers natural personality can have a definite impact on reactions from the dog depending on the dogs nature and temperament. The character and disposition of the dog will play a large role in determining how he will respond to the handlers requests. For the sake of this article we will assume the dog is a middle of the road type of dog, that is neither real soft or real aggressive towards the livestock and handler, while of a medium skill level in his abilities regarding livestock. When listening to different handlers work and run their dogs it soon becomes apparent that there are vast differences in how handlers and dogs integrate in their daily work together. Some handlers can ask softly and once to get a desired action while other handlers may bellow and holler loudly with no noticeable reaction from the dog. The reason for this is that the dog gets conditioned to the handlers daily habits and adjusts himself accordingly. If the handler consistently works and talks quietly while expecting the dog to listen the dog will have good listening skills as he will always be paying attention to the handlers voice. If the handler works quietly but does not expect the dog to listen the dog will be great at doing exactly as it pleases under the disguise of not understanding or hearing the handler. The other side of the coin is the handler that has a naturally loud and gruff personality. A dog may need a bit of time to realize this person is not reprimanding them but rather it is a normal request from the handler with no negativity attached. As the dog comprehends he is not in trouble he will have less trouble working with the gruffness while still listening and doing a job. The person who shouts or hollers at the dog while getting no noticeable results will often condition and promote the dog not listening. Shouting and noise can cause the dog to feed off the loudness as a form of energy that results in speeding the dog up even more and decreasing his already questionable listening skills. The dogs that listen to a quiet handler have been conditioned to listen for that quietness while the dogs that don’t listen until they are screeched at are conditioned to tune everything out and only respond to loudness when the volume is at max. Working with livestock. Key during breeding, and all times. Many Alberta farms are particularly busy working with livestock at this time of year. Through the stress of calving, lambing, sorting, processing, and relocating: often during inclement weather, farmers and ranchers need to consider their safety and that of others while tending to their animals. “The biggest factor in livestock handling safety is understanding animal behaviour,” says Jennifer Woods, livestock handling specialist based in Blackie, Alberta. “Workers need to be trained in this aspect before they are tasked with handling livestock. It is important to know that animals don’t necessarily react to their environment the way we would expect.” Many times, the cause of injury to handlers is overconfidence in their ability to predict or read animal behaviour. Workers can get too complacent and not pay attention to the situation. “What makes animal behaviour so different from humans is that animals truly live in the moment and react accordingly to the things they hear, smell, see, and feel. People usually do not perceive the same things animals perceive,” says
Woods. In general, calm animals are safer animals, and the best way to keep them calm while handling them is to reduce fear and anxiety. As a prey species, cattle have an inherent fear of unfamiliar objects, situations, smells, sudden movements, and noises. Animals that are singled out of a herd, injured or sick, are also more fearful. Woods points out the indicators when animals tend to be more unpredictable, and handlers must be particularly cautious. They are: During breeding season. During calving/lambing/foaling. When animals are alone. When animals have been harassed by a predator. When animals are injured or sick. When animals are in an unfamiliar environment or around unfamiliar handlers. Other factors that contribute to worker safety are the condition of the handling equipment and facilities, proximity of the handler to the livestock, and the physical size of the worker handling the livestock. Small children, for example, are at a considerable size disadvantage for

many tasks. In particular, workers need to be aware when they are in the kick zone of cattle. For long-term worker safety, Woods advises handlers to cull dangerous cows. “If there is a risk of them hurting a worker or family member, it is not worth it to keep them around. Even if that cow is a good producer, she will pass her bad behaviour on to her calves, and you don’t want that perpetuating in your herd.”
ed or knocked over. Extra caution needs to be taken with rams, as they can be quite dangerous. She warns that sheep can take a child out in a minute, “Adult supervisors need to make sure children are out of harm’s way during all aspects of livestock handling.”
As for sheep, Woods says that, generally speaking, smaller animals tend to be the ones more likely to get hurt during processing than a worker. However, you still need to pay attention to avoid getting butt-

THE BIG BEND A history of the families that opened up the Blueberry Mountain area
The Davidsons on the way
Labour Day weekend in Sept 1961 was the first time the Davidsons were in the Fourth Creek area, visiting friends the Nooys. In October of that year they filed on a homestead, on the south half o of 19-81-7. They were back by Thanksgiving 1962. Harold and Roselle Davidson had two children, Sandra and Clifford. In the fall of 1962 Sandra was doing correspondence in BC, before starting school in

Blueberry Creek in January 1963 On January 23 they moved a trailer up to Blueberry after Harold bought a Cat . All through ‘63 Harold broke the land they had filed on, and Davidson was on the first board in the area to put electrical power in, and in 1971 the phones were installed. In May of 1976 the Davidsons sold their land, celebrating 25th wedding anniversary in November of 1977. - Darlene Schultz

Engaging with your municipality The Farmers’ Advocate Office (FAO) helps rural Albertans better understand municipal processes relating to development permits, subdivision applications, appeals, property assessments, and petitions. “In response to recent inquiries and client files, the FAO has created a new publication called Engaging With Your Municipality. It is designed to equip and empower rural Albertans in their interactions with their local municipalities,” explains Jeana Schuurman, rural engagement and communications specialist with the FAO.

Engaging With Your Municipality provides a plain language overview of what rural landowners might want to know if they are preparing for an appeal and some of the tips we have learned at the FAO,” explains Schuurman.

Too busy to affect change? Don’t whine about it. I have heard nothing but anger and in some cases outright ignorance over the helmet exemption in Alberta. (http://driving.ca/autonews/news/sikh-motorcyclists-gethelmet-exemption-in-alberta) The problem with the riding community here in Canada is we are comprised largely of people who are too busy to do anything meaningful to affect change so we whine instead and let our resentment and anger grow. No one is passionate about the rights of motorcyclists it seems, at least not in Alberta, BC or Manitoba. OH, People bitch and make stupid racist statements like “them damned Muslims”...only problem Sikhs are not Muslims. Let’s face it, if you like riding lidless, if you are not Sikh, you are jealous and pissed off right now. BE HONEST.
fairly straightforward argument. 2) Riders in BC, Alberta and Manitoba need someone in each province to stand up a credible rights organizations and lobby the government hard. Are you willing to stand up to do the work that needs to happen? Do you have the money to fund this push? If not are you willing to help raise the money? 3) Battles like what needs to happen to repeal a law are expensive and time consuming, the wheels move slowly, but it can be done. What are you willing to do? Provide money or put in some grunt time?
4) If having choice is really important to you and going through the legal fight isn’t worth it to you, then form a religion. It’s expensive to do, it’s time consuming, but it can be done. Either way it’s time riders start learning to work together. If we don’t learn how to protect our rights, we won’t have any. We are after all citizens and taxpayers, we have a right to a vote, to a voice and to lobby...we can also do what we have done for years, sit back, bitch, whine and snivel and get on with the new normal. The choice is yours.
In other news, Canada’s MOST Rider Friendly Community Contest has begun it’s hunt to find the most rider friendly community from last riding season. Over 140 communities to vote for... Who will win? We find out June 7th... www.riderfriendlycontest.ca And visit our sponsors pages please - they make this contest happen!!!! #RiderFriendlyContest
But you aren’t looking at this situation in a thoughtful way, you are looking at it through the lens of emotion; hurt, frustrated, feeling discriminated against emotions. Right? So here are some things to consider: 1) If we had any real riders rights groups in Manitoba, BC & Alberta, any group that had some teeth and drive, this would open the door for helmet exemptions for all, since no requirements for additional medical insurance exist, it would be a

Direct marketing: a growing opportunity for Alberta farms Local Food Demand in Alberta 2016 found that food spending at farmers’ markets, farm retail, and restaurants serving local food in Alberta exceeded $1.5 billion in that year. The 2016 Census of Agriculture included a question about farms selling food directly to consumers. It found that about 5 per cent, or 2,062 farms in Alberta, sold food directly to consumers, below the national average of 12.6 per cent. Of those 2,062 Alberta farms selling directly to consumers, 35 per cent were new entrants to direct to consumer market channels. Beef cattle farms represented the highest proportion of new entrants at 21 per cent, followed by apiculture at
12 per cent, and animal combination farming at 11 per cent. More than two-thirds of the new entrants were small farms with annual sales less than $50,000, 18 per cent were medium-sized, and 10 per cent were large with sales in excess of
$250,000. For a more information on opportunities in direct to consumer marketing, visit Explore Local or contact Christine Anderson local foods specialist with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry.

Alberta farms are seeing more opportunities to sell their products directly to consumers, as more people want to know where their food comes from and how it is produced. Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AF) has been tracking local food demand trends in various direct to consumer market channels, including on-farm retail, farmers’ markets, and community supported agriculture (CSA) since 2004. “Local food sales through direct to consumer market channels have more than doubled since 2008,” says Christine Anderson, local foods specialist with AF. “We are expecting sales from this past year to reach $1.2 billion.” The Study of

Sun is shining, cold breeze blowing feels good to be alive today, hope the calves are really growing and nothing in the neighbours hay. Get there, unload, saddle up, then climb aboard my old gray mare. Seee a little coyore pup; he runs awhile then turns to stare. The cows and calves are looking fat, some grazing, some laying in the shade. I pull up, lean back, push up my hat Thinking ‘a rancher’s got it made.” Ride through the herd to make my tally, Brush a horsefly off my knee, then a sick feeling in my belly – I’m missing two our three. Count again, then ride aroundhope they’re sleeping in the hay. Find some bones upon the ground. Below, Peter Dolen and family.

BC and Feds agree to five-year agriculture funding partnership The BC government has announced a five year funding partnership between the provincial and federal governments that will see $115 million put in BC programs supporting farming, ranching and food-processing sectors. “British Columbia is developing programs that will help farmers, ranchers and food processors create new technology and products, expand sales, improve their efficiency and sustainability, and protect themselves from crop losses and income declines,” BC Agriculture Minister Lana Popham said. “We’re also looking at ways to
support new entrants and young farmers, so agriculture in B.C. attracts new businesses, revenues and employees, and reaches new levels of success in the next five years.” Programs for market development, agri-technology and onfarm and processor food safety will be funded. Business-development services and environmental programs are also key to the partnership. This partnership replaces Growing Forward 2, the five-year federal-provincial agreement that ended March 31, 2018.

Cold and snow issues might also delay Alberta farmers’ usual start-up times, which could force them to make some management decisions to ensure timely crop maturation. They might consider growing earlier maturity wheat or switching to an earlier season crop like barley, provincial crops specialist Mark Cutts says. Ideally, southern Alberta producers are seeding toward the end of April, with the majority of acres elsewhere getting planted after May 10. “For central and northern areas, it’s not uncommon to use those last [two or three] weeks of May to get the bulk of the seeding done,” he adds.
