Organic waste conversion systems for rural communities in BC

Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, announced an investment of nearly $832,000 for Safi Enterprises Inc. under the Research and Innovation Stream of the Agricultural Clean Technology (ACT) Program.

The funding will support research and development of a new generation of small, portable and low-cost conversion systems for organic waste, known as biomass, that can serve rural and rural Indigenous communities.

Safi Enterprises, in partnership with the University of British Columbia, is exploring the feasibility of producing carbon-based fertilizer blends from crop residues that can be used on farms. Communities can convert the residues into fertilizer blends and other carbon-based products, which can provide additional income. The systems also prevent residues from being burned in open air, reducing pollution, greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs), and the risk of wildfires.

While conversion technologies focus mainly on large agricultural processing plants, Safi Enterprises aims to help rural farmers reduce waste across the supply chain, while adopting more sustainable on-farm practices such as reducing chemical fertilizer use. To date, Safi Enterprises has engaged local First Nations communities including Líl̓wat, Esk’etemc,

and Ulkatcho, to host the portable conversion systems on-site.

The Government of Canada continues to invest in research, development and adoption of clean technology to help the agriculture sector support a low-carbon economy, while feeding a growing population.

“Safi Enterprises and its partners are working to provide rural communities in BC with the tools to turn waste into cash. This research supports economic growth and development of the agricultural sector, while aiming to reduce fertilizer and greenhouse gas emissions,” says Francis Drouin, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food

“Through our investments in clean technology, we are propelling climate action to build a healthy future for Canada. The development of technologies such as waste conversion systems can help communities, including Indigenous communities, establish a self-sufficient and carbon-negative bioeconomy,” added Joyce Murray, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, and Member of Parliament for Vancouver Quadra

Safi Enterprises Inc. (also known as Takachar) develops technologies to convert crop residues into carbon-based fertilizer blends. With operations in Canada, the United States and India, it is partnering with the Government of British Columbia, the University of British Columbia (UBC), Indigenous communities, and rural farmers.

The ACT – Research and Innovation Stream supports pre-market innovation including research, development, demonstration and commercialization of agricultural clean technologies.

Through the recently expanded ACT Program, current pollution levels are expected to be reduced by up to 0.8 megaton as a result of fuel switching and decreased fuel consumption.

As part of the Strengthened Climate Plan and the Emissions Reduction Plan the Government of Canada committed over $1.5 billion to accelerate the agricultural sector’s progress on reducing emissions and to remain a global leader in sustainable agriculture. This includes $495.7 million for the Agricultural Clean Technology (ACT) Program.

This is your Wonowon 4-H report

I hope that you all had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

We did our Club Weigh-In on November 12, 2022. The Weigh-In went great, I was surprised on how much our steers weighed. We also had our Club meeting and elections. We have a couple new members in the Wonowon 4-H Club this year and I would like to welcome them.

We haven’t had our District Awards night yet for 2022, but I am really looking forward to it. Getting together, visiting with friends and getting to see people that you haven’t seen for a long time. I am also really looking forward to the dance that we are going to have there. Awards night is a great way to bring all the Clubs together and to visit with each other.

At the end of December Sara and I put halters on our 4-H animals for the first time this year. We had to snare them all because they were all a little bit too nervous for us to just put the halter on. We got things ready the night before so that there wasn’t as much new stuff going on that morning, and so that they wouldn’t be as suspicious when we went to catch them. To our surprise all of the 4-H animals weren’t that hard to catch. We just put a rubber grain tub beside a post or tree, put the rope loop around the trough, did a couple loops around the post or tree with the other end of the rope and when the steer or heifer went to eat, we just slipped the rope around their neck. After we got them closer to the post or tree, we put the rope halter on and tied it to a tube, which was also around post or tree. Then took the rope that was around their neck off. That is how we caught all of our 4-H animals this year.

We often hear questions like “Is this program for beginners? Will it help with trail riding? Is it only for colts?”

The answer is, Glenn’s stages program is for anyone who wants to improve - from beginner to advanced. The program starts at the very basics of mindset, equipment and groundwork and progresses all the way to liberty, bareback riding, bridleless riding and everything in between.

Here’s a small list of achievements we’ve seen our students make in the past 12 months with Glenn’s program:

Used liberty to bring in 5 horses from the pasture who were with 35 other cows (couldn’t use a bucket because of the cows)

Taught a young horse how to easily load on a trailer consistently with minimal stress

Quickly built a strong relationship with a new horse

Kept everything calm and under control when encountering a herd of elk on a

trail ride

Taught a lazy horse to have more try in a few weeks

Did circles at liberty for the first time ever

Developed a strong bond and communication with a rude/ pushy yearling

Taught a spooky horse to trust me and try way more on new (scary) obstacles

Rode bareback for the first time

Cantered confidently

My hard to catch horse is now easy to catch

And much, much more…

If you’re looking to make dramatic improvements in your riding - try Glenn’s program.

We still have a few spots available in this month’s Kickstart.

I go way deeper into goal setting, but I also cover mindset, groundwork, in-saddle training, important tack and equipment and a whole lot more.

Premier announces deal with Blueberry River First Nation

On Wednesday, B.C. Premier David Eby and Blueberry River First Nation Chief Judy Desjarlais announced that the governments had reached an agreement regarding the First Nation’s Treaty 8 rights.

On June 29, 2021, a B.C. Supreme Court ruling found that the province had infringed upon the First Nation’s rights under Treaty 8, due to the cumulative impact of decades of industrial development in their traditional territory. The court prohibited the provincial government from authorizing further activities that infringe on the First Nation’s rights in a 3.8-million-hectare area around Fort St. John, and directed the parties to negotiate a collaborative approach to land management and natural resource development.

“Reconciliation is an all-ofgovernment priority,” Eby said. “The path to reconciliation is through negotiation, not through litigation.”

The deal will provide stability and predictability for industry, while allowing Blueberry River First Nations members to exercise their Treaty 8 rights, he said.

The deal sets out 650,000 ha. of “high-value” areas, which will be subject to restrictions on natural resource development.

Timber harvesting will be prohibited in some protected areas, resulting in a 350,000 cubic metre reduction in the annual allowable cut in the Fort St. John Timber Supply Area – about a 15 per cent reduction.

The agreement also sets out a goal of reducing new land disturbance for oil and gas development by 50 per cent below current levels throughout the First Nation’s claim area. The deal sets out a cap of 750 ha. per year of new land disturbance for oil and gas development in the area, with new developments prohibited or heavily restricted in designated high-value areas.

BLOCKS, TUBS OR PELLET: WHAT IS THE BEST OPTION WHEN SUPPLEMENTING PROTEIN

Sales of lick tubs, molasses blocks, and protein supplement continue to be strong. The question to consider is: what Is the appropriate product or combination of products to use? There are many factors to consider along with the type of animal being fed, feed quality, availability, and weather.

Five pieces of information are needed before making a decision

1. Representative feed samples with accurate analysis

2. Animal weights

3. Bale weights

4. Ability to weigh out components in the ration (Total Mixed Ration)

5. How each feed is supplied.

Supplementing protein can be done in many ways. Is there a higher quality forage available? If not, does the product of choice meet animal requirements?

Two options are to feed one pound of a 20% protein supplement ($385 / tonne, or 17.5 cents a pound). Feeding 0.4 pounds of wheat distillers’ grains with solubles (WDG) which contains 48% protein at a cost of $535 / tonne, or 24 cents a pound) supplies the same amount of protein. If protein is the only concern, the WDG is more economical to use. Both options are usually fed with grain or mixed into silage in a controlled feeding program.

Another option is to feed tubs or blocks, free choice. With this option, it is not possible to know how much product individual animals are consuming. The free choice systems have a greater risk of not achieving the intake that is required.

In the above example, a 1,400-pound cow in late pregnancy requires a 9% protein diet (dry basis) or 1,020 grams of protein per day. Adding one pound of a 20% supplement or 0.4 pounds of WDG increases protein content in the ration by 90 grams or 0.5% on a dry matter basis. If the ration contains 8% protein, it would be necessary to double the feeding rates to meet requirements. There are times when label recommendations do not work. Each situation is different. Balancing rations can improve the use of available feeds and evaluate which purchased product(s) best meet the needs of the animals. It has the potential to reduce costs as well.

For additional information on protein supplementation, contact Barry at 403-741-6032 or bjyaremcio@gmail.com.

Four B.C. businesses that are developing solutions to help ensure the province’s food systems remain secure, resilient and sustainable are the first to receive funding through the recently launched B.C. Centre for Agritech Innovation (BCCAI).

“We need to be continuously innovating and working together to improve local food production and access to food for people here in B.C.,” said Pam Alexis, B.C.’s Minister of Agriculture and Food. “Agritech is the future and the work these four companies are doing in partnership with the B.C. Centre for Agritech Innovation is helping ensure B.C.’s food systems are secure, resilient and sustainable.”

The four companies receiving a total investment of $540,000, including $122,500 from BCCAI, are: Aeroroot Systems, Agrotek Industries, Bakerview EcoDairy, and Lucent BioSciences.

Each project is contributing to long-term priorities of agriculture in B.C., such as Indigenous food security and vertical farming, as well as increased and sustainable crop production. It is anticipated these projects will be farm-ready for commercialization in two years, creating more than 30 well-paying jobs.

“The B.C. Centre for Agritech Innovation brings together academia, industry and government to create new opportunities in food production,” said Francis Drouin, Parliamentary Secretary to the federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and Member of Parliament for Glengarry-Prescott-Russell, on behalf of Harjit S. Sajjan, federal Minister of International Development and Minister responsible for Pacific Economic Development Canada. “As we build Canada’s agriculture sector for the future, the Government of Canada will be here to support innovative, inclusive projects like the ones announced today to ensure the sector’s prosperity and competitiveness for years to come.”

These four projects, supported by the B.C. Centre for Agritech Innovation, were unveiled at the Pacific Agriculture Show in Abbotsford.

“SFU is grateful for the generous support from the federal and provincial governments to advance the vital work of the B.C. Centre for Agritech Innovation and our partners,” said Dugan O’Neil, vice-president research and international, Simon Fraser University.

“We are pleased to be working with academic, industry and community partners across the sector to improve food security locally and globally, create jobs and position B.C. as a world leader in the agritech space.”

Brenda Bailey, B.C.’s Minister of Jobs, Economic Development and Innovatio said through the B.C. Centre for Agritech Innovation, our province is supporting agritech businesses and entrepreneurs to revolutionize the industry and grow, while helping people get the skills needed to fill jobs in this rapidly expanding sector.

“Agritech is a key pillar of the StrongerBC Economic Plan, helping us tackle climate change while contributing to a sustainable and resilient agriculture industry for all British Columbians.”

Peter Atwal, founder and senior engineer, Aeroroot Systems said with the partnership of B.C. Centre for Agritech Innovation, is testing the future of sustainable crop production in B.C. Vertical farming will play a crucial role in the future of agriculture in B.C.

“And with the support of BCCAI, we are able to develop new technology that requires less space and resources to grow and produce more crops.”

All invited to Cattlemen’s dinner and dance

It’s the first time the North Peace Cattlemen’s Association has been able to host the event since the Covid-19 pandemic, and organizers say planning is going super and tickets selling fast.

“It always was a good time to get out, have some fun, and visit with your neighbours in the winter time,” says association president Renee Ardill. “It’s been going on for years, Covid took all that away from us because we couldn’t go anywhere or see anybody. I think people are ready to get out and do something again.”

Proceeds from the fundraiser go directly back into the association, which hosts information events throughout the year for local cattle producers and is a substantial supporter of North Peace 4-H.

Importantly, the association gives members a voice at the provincial level through the B.C. Cattlemen and the federal level through the Canadian Cattlemen associations.

“The economy is tough right now,” says Ardill. “We got a better price this fall for our calves than we have for quite awhile, which sounds goods, that makes everybody happy. But how much did fuel go up? How much is equipment now?”

Ardill says farm commodities prices have not kept up with the price of production, and though grocery stores, packing plants, and supply chains are making healthy profits from rising prices, farmers and producers aren’t

seeing it in turn.

“If people don’t smarten up and realize this, and government has a role to play in this, they’re going to be in seriously trouble because people can’t keep doing it,” Ardill says. “There’s only so many things you can do to cut back and people have cut back to the point where there isn’t much more cutting back to be done.”

Doors open for the dinner and dance at 6 p.m. at the Pomeroy Hotel, and includes music by Debbie Butler and Brian Collins, as well as Country Horizon Sounds. There will be a live and silent auction, as well as a midnight lunch.

“I hope that we have a good turnout, I hope that people will come and enjoy themselves,” said Ardill. “It doesn’t have to be cattlemen, it’s open to anybody. It’s always been a good event, it usually sells out, and it’s just usually a lot of fun.”

Tickets can be purchased at 8 Seconds Western Wear or by calling Braden Sutherland at 250-261-9166.

to shut down sawmill in Chetwynd

Chetwynd’s Canfor sawmill and pelletmill will be closing.

The anouncement came last week, a few weeks after announcing closure of their pulp mill in Prince George. Canfor is rationalizing its sawmill and pulp mill operations in B.C. to align with a shrinking fibre supply.

“The company will undertake a comprehensive evaluation of the availability of economic fibre and a thorough project financial analysis, supporting a final investment decision by the end of the second quarter of 2023,” Canfor said in a news release.

“Both facilities will be closed following an orderly wind down of operations that is expected to conclude early in the second

quarter of 2023 and will remove approximately 750 million board feet of annual production capacity.”

Canfor CEO Don Kayne said thier goal is to match mill capacity with the economically available fibre for harvest to enhance ability to compete and to operate throughout the market cycles.

2022 Cattle market review

“2022 proved to be challenging,” says Ann Boyda, livestock economist with the Alberta government. “The livestock sector faced high input prices (including farm labour, feed, and fuel) which raised the cost of production. Dry conditions in spring caused concern but fortunately producers saw some relief by fall that helped address feed supply concerns.”

The livestock sector also encountered border and rail disruptions. These contributed to supply chain challenges and exposed vulnerabilities in the cattle market. Despite these challenges, the cattle markets improved in 2022, with prices at their highest since 20142015.

The total Canadian slaughter volume for 2022 was estimated to reach 3.23 million head, up 1% from 2021. However, steer slaughter volume was lower in 2022 by approximately 2.6%, while the rate of beef cows and heifer slaughter was 4% and 5.2% higher, respectively. This would suggest tighter production in 2023.

The estimated average fed steer price in 2022 was 11% higher than the average fed steer price in 2021. Fed steer prices started the year at levels comparable to the 5-year average for 2017 to 2021 but continued a steady increase throughout the year.

The estimated average 550-pound steer price in 2022 was 10% higher than the average feeder steer price in 2021. Light feeder steer

prices started the year at levels comparable to the last year average but diverged in the summer and maintained a strong price for the remainder of the year.

At the close of 2022, feedlots in Alberta and Saskatchewan had plenty of fed cattle supply. Fed cattle basis levels were wide and processors had their requirements well taken care of.

“Any further backlog is expected to be alleviated by February, so Alberta fed cattle prices may remain relatively flat through January,” says Boyda. “Basis levels should start to strengthen in February and bids should be stronger in March and April. Feedlot margins are expected to increase, and, in combination with an improved demand for replacement cattle, feeder cattle prices are expected to strengthen over the summer 2023.”

“The future for the feeder cattle market looks optimistic, but it is important to keep in mind that feed prices are still high and profits difficult to sustain for any extended period,” points out Boyda. “Much still rests on what rainfall levels will be like in the spring as soil conditions are still relative dry in many parts of the province. As of December 21, 2022, snow pack accumulation was reported as normal. Hopefully there will be enough snow to recharge surface water supplies but timely spring rains will still be critical.”

(VJV Dawson Creek, January 12, 2023) VJV Livestock Marketing Group would like to

youth development

The 4-H program provides young people with an opportunity to learn how to become productive, self-assured adults who can make their community and country a good place in which to live. This is fostered through project and program work, experiences with their 4-H club members and leaders and their participation in district, regional and even provincial programs.

The goal of the 4-H program is youth development. The objectives of 4-H clubs are knowledge, leadership, citizenship and personal development.

4-H British Columbia builds awareness of agriculture, inspiring, educating and supporting youth to reach their full potential.

Vision

Empowered and skilled young people committed to making positive change in their communities.

4-H is an organization dedicated to young people. The purpose of the 4-H program is to prepare girls and boys for their future as adult citizens. 4-H stands for head, heart, hands and health. The 4-H pledge describes the significance of the four H’s:

Blue Book hidden gems

Many people who use Alberta Agriculture and Forestry’s Crop Protection manual - the Blue Book – do so for the comprehensive list of pesticide products for use on major field crops.

“But, how many are aware of the vast amounts of additional information available before the products listed,” asks Harry Brook, coeditor of the Blue Book and crop specialist at the Alberta Ag-Info Centre. “These pages contain the hidden gems of information that are valuable to producers.”

The manual give attention to herbicide resistance in weeds, especially wild oats and kochia.

“Every year we hear of resistance showing up in new weeds to an increasing list of herbicidal modes of action,” he says. “How do you know if you are actually rotating herbicide modes of action? You will find on pages 42 to 45 a table with all the herbicides in the Blue Book classified and listed by their modes of action.”

“This table is an excellent resource to use to ensure you are varying the modes of action and, hopefully, delaying the presence of herbicide resistance on your farm. It links to the herbicide group numbers listed in the title bars of every pesticide. Page 41 also lists the current weed species where resistance has been found.”

The Blue Book also contains contact information for most of the companies whose products are listed within the manual and a link on the downloadable version to Health Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency’s search engine.

“There, you can search for the labels of any pesticide product in Canada,” he explains. “It can be useful if you are looking for control of a particular weed. Searching for mention of that weed will pull up all mentions of the weed in all pertinent labels.”

The manual also includes informative illustrations showing how to number leaf stages for grassy, broadleaf and legume plants. Those help clarify when a herbicide should be safely applied to the crop and weed.

The Blue Book contains a primer on calibrating the sprayer, nozzle selection and mixing amounts for small sprayers.

“For those not that familiar,” adds Brook, “there is a section on tank mixes, definition of adjuvants, surfactants and spreaders as well as the mixing order to follow. Each pesticide requires a certain order of mixing depending on product formulation. It also includes sprayer cleanout procedures needed, which vary and depend on the products being sprayed. Oil based

product needs a different clean out process than water soluble or emulsifiable concentrates.”

“The information in the front of the book gives plenty of information on how to properly and safely use pesticides,” he says. It includes a section that looks at environmental issues and what to do if a problem emerges, including cases of spillage, drift or disposal.

The Farmer Pesticide Certificate Program is also explained in the manual.

“It is valuable for those who need access to restricted products to treat grain for stored grain pests and is also required by several producer groups as due diligence in the use of pesticides.”

Pesticide disposal sites are listed across the province to ensure

safe disposal of containers after application. First aid, pollinator protection, grazing and haying restrictions, water quality and nitrate poisoning of livestock are all topics mentioned in the front sections.

“Everyone uses the list of pesticides in the Blue Book as well as the selector charts with pests and crops,” adds Brook. “Get the most out of this publication this winter and spend some time in the unknown country before the product lists. It may surprise you.”

The next Blue Book is expected to be out in early spring 2020.

Register for the Farm to Market to Table Conference

“The Farm to Market to Table Conference is a great resource,” says Eileen Kotowich, farmers’ market specialist with the Alberta government. “Producers can learn more about direct market production and connect with their peers and experts.”

The conference includes keynote speakers who focus on both production and marketing. Participants can learn about drip irrigation, planning for livestock emergencies, digital marketing, beneficial insects, and marketing meat, along with assessing land for horticulture production and preparing land for production.

“There are also discussions on the importance of insurance, what to get for your farm direct or agri-tourism operation and other risk management tools. You will hear highlights from several successful growers who have grown their operations beyond farm gate sales into the value-

added realm in a variety of crops and livestock. Attendees will also be able to connect with suppliers and service providers at the conference’s tradeshow.”

In addition to the information sessions, there are a number of special events, including a virtual presentation on crop sciences, a tour of an innovative passive solar greenhouse, an interactive soil health workshop, and an opportunity to network at the banquet and awards ceremony.

Register for the Farm to Market to Table Conference. The early bird registration deadline is January 31.

Despite these challenges, the cattle markets improved in 2022, with prices at their highest since 2014-2015.

Light feeder steer prices started the year at levels comparable to the

last year average but diverged in the summer and maintained a strong price for the remainder of the year.

Winter manure management considerations

“Extreme weather events, full manure storages, delayed harvest or contractor availability may be some of the most common reasons why a farm operator may need to spread manure on frozen and/or snow-covered ground,” says Trevor Wallace, provincial nutrient management specialist with the Alberta government. “However, when the ground is frozen or snow-covered, the risk of losing applied manure and nutrients in runoff is much greater due to limited soil infiltration, reduced vegetative filtering and increased runoff potential. It is important to be aware of the increased risks and to know your options to manage them.”

Adopt strategies to avoid emergency situations and the need to spread manure on frozen or snow-covered ground. Strategies could include regular maintenance and inspection of the equipment and facilities. Consider increasing the frequency of inspections with aging infrastructure. Wellplanned inspections identify wear, damage and maintenance issues before there is a problem. Create a checklist and a schedule to find weak points in the system so that they are not overlooked, and keep those records should a Natural Resources Conservation Board (NRCB) inspector ask to see them.

“If your storage facilities cannot hold the manure produced through the winter, perhaps it’s time to increase your storage capacity,” points out Wallace.

This can be done by constructing additional storage facility capacity to provide a total 12 to 18 months manure production, which will:

Another way to increase capacity for solid manure is to use short-term or temporary manure storage. Under the Agricultural Operation Practices Act (AOPA), manure can be stored in a short-term manure storage for an accumulated total of 7 months over a 3-year period.

“This limitation reduces the risks from storing manure such as nutrient accumulation, runoff and leaching. Site selection can further reduce these impacts and minimize concerns from neighbours and the community.”

If spreading is the only option, the first step to managing risks related to spreading manure on frozen or snow-covered land is to contact the nearest NRCB inspector to discuss the situation. The NRCB may or may not grant permission depending on the reasons for spreading, type of manure and the site-specific circumstances.

Variety selection using the Alberta Seed Guide

The greatly anticipated Alberta Seed Guide will hit producer mailboxes at the end of January, and growers will be scouring the tables to see the latest, greatest options for the next growing season.

Variety selection is a huge part of decision-making on Alberta farms. Each year, farmers decide if they will be ‘upgrading’ to a new variety. After harvest, growers will assess the yield performance, standability, disease tolerance, insect resistance and grain quality of the variety they grew. There are many scenarios where growers are looking for something better. However, it is a challenge for

growers to know what the best variety choice is for their farming operation.

When selecting a new wheat or barley variety for the farm, the seed guide is one important source of third-party, independent data that has been vetted by over 40 industry experts from all ranges of the seed production value chain. To get full value from the Alberta Seed Guide, it is important to understand how the data was generated and how it should be interpreted.

Data for the Alberta Seed Guide

Data for the seed guide comes from the Alberta Regional Variety Trials (RVTs). These are small plot trials, grown at multiple locations (up to 15 sites depending on the crop type) across Alberta, that compare the performance of newly registered wheat, barley, oat, flax and triticale varieties with the performance of well-known check cultivars. These field research plots are conducted by trial cooperators from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Applied

Research Associations, Nutrien, Lakeland College and InnoTech Alberta.

New varieties are tested for three years to understand their performance under different environmental conditions. For example, the growing conditions, disease and insect pressures at Lethbridge are very different than those experienced in Fort Vermilion. To support confident variety selection for Alberta farmers, it is important to understand how varieties perform. The RVTs provide this testing.

Information collected from the Alberta RVTs is used to populate the height, yield, lodging, maturity, and protein data columns of the Seed Guide tables.

The RVT trials are grown using the following agronomic practices:

Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), Potassium (K) and Sulphur (S) fertilizer rates are based on soil test results for 1.25 times the area average yield goal of the past four years, as reported in the Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC) Yield Alberta publication. The objective of these high fertilizer rates is to ensure that fertility is not a yield limiting factor.

Wheat, barley, oat and triticale seed is treated with Cruiser Maxx Vibrance Quattro to protect the trials from fungal disease and wireworm damage.

had acquired two years of trial data. This rule ensures that there is sufficient performance data and that the performance data will be more accurate. After two years of testing a variety is then published in the Alberta Seed Guide. After a variety has been tested for three years, it is considered fully tested in the Alberta system. Performance data on a variety may change between year’s two and three. This is because additional data from the third year of testing will give a better indication of the variety’s performance over a wide range of environmental conditions. When reviewing the seed guide, the “Overall Station Years of Testing” column will indicate how many site years of data have been included in the “Overall Yield” column. The more site years of data, the more stable the data will be.

It is necessary to remove old varieties to keep the table size manageable. Varieties that have been published for five years, but do not have pedigreed seed production in Alberta, over the past two years may be removed from the tables. Starting in 2023, when a variety drops below one per cent of the commercial acreage of the crop kind in the province, based on AFSC Crop Insurance data, it will also be flagged for removal from the tables.

Seeding rates are adjusted for thousand kernel weight (TKW) and germination to reach target plant populations of 31 wheat plants/sqft, 25 barley plants/sqft, 28 oat plants/sqft, 29 triticale plants/sqft, 75 or 84 flax plants/ sqft for brown and yellow seed coat varieties, respectively.

If the trial is not seeded by May 25th, the trial is not planted.

Disease ratings which are presented in the Seed Guide are compiled from various sources in Alberta and other prairie provinces, with most of this data coming from the breeding registration trials and disease nurseries.

Data Tables in the Seed Guide

If a variety was just entered into the RVTs in the current growing season, it would not show up in the seed guide until the variety

The yield potential of a variety is one critical piece of information. In the Alberta Seed Guide, overall yield is presented along with yield performance in different yield categories (i.e., performance at low and high yielding environments). While there are many ways to present yield data, scientific studies conducted in Western Canada have shown that yield category analysis provides a more reliable indication of yield performance than results organized by geographic region.

Overall yield data is listed as a per cent of the check and reflects data from the overall number of station years of testing.

Changes to AFSC’s insurance products for 2023

Producers can expect several changes to Agriculture Financial Services Corporation’s (AFSC) insurance products for 2023.

The changes include a move to monthly payments for Moisture Deficiency Insurance, an increase in the reseeding benefit compensation rate, the addition of bear predation (hive and bees) to the Wildlife Damage Compensation Program, increased coverage for Straight Hail Insurance and the cancellation of Satellite Yield Insurance.

and beyond make the continuation of this program impossible,” said Kay. “Satellite Yield Insurance was only available in certain locations in the province, and we will be contacting the affected clients to discuss the cancellation of the program and review their insurance options.”

Producers who have taken Satellite Yield Insurance in the past will be able to transition to Moisture Deficiency Insurance seamlessly as Moisture Deficiency Insurance coverage levels are comparable to satellite insurance.

January 29, 2023)

“Agriculture in Alberta is a multi-billion-dollar industry and one of the driving forces of our economy,” said Nate Horner, Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation. “Producers need affordable and effective risk management options to give them peace of mind and support them as our agriculture sector grows and diversifies. These adjustments give producers more flexibility to react and respond to emerging challenges and opportunities.”

“We are making these changes to ensure we continue to meet the needs of Alberta’s hardworking farmers and ranchers,” explained Darryl Kay, AFSC’s Chief Executive Officer. “This year’s enhancements ensure our programs reflect and respond to the risks faced by producers and give them the tools to respond to those risks.”

The shift to monthly Moisture Deficiency Insurance payments will put money into producers’ hands when they need it, allowing them to be proactive during dry periods and buy feed or take other immediate steps. Similarly, the addition of a bear predation (hives and bees) pilot project to the Wildlife Damage Compensation Program will allow beekeepers to recover more quickly after bear damage to their hives. Additionally, updates to the Reseeding Benefit compensation rate will make it more reflective of current reseeding costs.

Cancellation of Satellite Yield Insurance

The other major change this year is the cancellation of Satellite Yield Insurance.

“Technical issues with the acquisition of satellite data for 2023

AFSC offers a broad range of insurance products covering a variety of crops including grains, cattle and fresh vegetables. Last summer’s intense hailstorms affirmed the need to ensure hail coverage meets the needs of all producers, including market garden producers. As such, AFSC is increasing Straight Hail Insurance maximum coverage limits.

AFSC continues to work with market garden operators to ensure this growing sector has access to risk management programs. AFSC is holding two input advisory group meetings in January to gather information from Alberta’s market garden operators about the risks they face and how risk management programs can be improved to better meet these risks.

Quick facts

Moisture Deficiency Insurance is moving to monthly payments. Monthly payments will ensure money gets into producers’ hands when they need it.

This will allow producers to be more agile as they access water, buy feed or take other steps to deal with dry conditions.

Updates to the Reseeding Benefit compensation rate make it more reflective of current reseeding costs.

The addition of a bear predation to hives and bees pilot project to the Wildlife Damage Compensation Program will allow beekeepers to recover more quickly after bear damage to their hives.

Satellite Yield Insurance is being discontinued.

1. Fill a recyclable plastic cup with tap water

2. Add a few drops of blue food dye

3. Put the cup in the freezer for about four hours or until the water is completely frozen

4. In the meantime, fill a large container, like a salad bowl, with warm water

5. Take the plastic cup out of the freezer and remove the ice

6. Place the miniature iceberg in the container of water

7. Watch what happens

EXPLANATION

The iceberg floats because of a phenomenon called buoyancy. When an object is immersed in water, it tends to rise to the surface. Since ice is less dense than water, the iceberg floats

near the surface, while 90 per cent of its volume hides below the waterline. If you want, you can repeat this experiment using another colour for the iceberg.

DID YOU KNOW?

Real icebergs, like those near Newfoundland and Labrador, are over 10,000 years old.

5 surprising facts about the Sun

Without the Sun’s heat and light, life on Earth wouldn’t exist. Here are five amazing facts about this spectacular star.

1. THE SUN ISN’T YELLOW

During space missions, astronauts discovered the Sun is actually white. As you may already know, white is a mixture of every colour. During the day, the Earth’s atmosphere scatters blue light more efficiently than red light. This causes the human eye to perceive the colour of the Sun as yellow.

2. THE SUN’S RAYS TAKE TIME TO GET HERE

Sunlight takes about eight minutes to travel to Earth. If the Sun suddenly went out, you’d have time to play two or three songs before everything went dark.

3. THE SUN IS VERY OLD

The Sun is over 4.5 billion years old. Scientists have established that this star is about halfway through its lifespan.

4. THE SUN MAKES A SOUND

The Sun emits a low buzzing noise that sounds like a fan. The closer you get, the more clearly you can hear it.

5. THE SUN IS TOO FAR TO DRIVE TO IN A LIFETIME

If there was a road that went straight to the Sun, it would take more than 170 years to reach it by car, provided you were travelling at 100 kilometres per hour.

Incredible, isn’t it?

How to give old socks a second l ife

Have you outgrown your old socks? If they’re still in good condition, pass them on to a friend or sibling. If not, you can give them a second life with one of these four easy-tocomplete projects.

1. FLOWERPOT COVER

Cut off the bottom part of the sock, making sure to keep the tube-shaped top section intact. Then, slip it around a small plastic or clay flowerpot. If necessary, ask your parents to help you attach it with hot glue.

2. TOY FISH

Cut an oval from thick cardboard and stretch your old sock around it. Fill the sock with scraps of fabric or cotton balls and close it with a rubber band. Make sure to leave a bit of extra fabric on the end for the fish’s tail.

Glue on buttons or other small round objects for the eyes.

3. POUCH

Do you need somewhere to store your phone, loose change, marbles or other small objects? Cut off the bottom part of your sock, making sure to keep the tube-shaped top section intact. Then, sew or glue one end shut. Depending on what you have on hand, you can close your pouch with elastic, Velcro or a pretty ribbon.

4. HEATING PAD

Fill your old sock with grains of rice and tie the end shut. Make sure there aren’t any holes. Put it in the microwave for a few seconds, and then use it to soothe sore muscles after playing outside.

There are many fun ways to repur pose old socks. Get creative, and find out what other neat things you can make.

One ceremony, four permanent displays

Veterans Memorial Gardens & Interpretive Centre in Grande Prairie Alberta has been building memorials and displays all throughout the pandemic. Because of the restrictions and in many cases the fears that people were experiencing, we held off on commemorating any of these displays.

But 2022 was to be different and so we planned a weekend filled with activities to celebrate the lifting of many restrictions, the resurgence of events and to honour and remember through the act of commemoration.

To ensure that we honoured everyone’s feeling of safety, the commemoration event, the 1940’s Canteen party that followed and the community block party that took place saturday and Sunday were all held out of doors and thankfully, other than for extreme smoke on Sunday afternoon, the weather cooperated.

The afternoon of September 9th, 2022 was warm and sunny and that made it the perfect day for a commemoration ceremony. The passing of Her Majesty Elizabeth II the day before the ceremony left everyone’s hearts feeling a wee bit heavy and subdued. The mood was somewhat pensive.

On this very special day, we remembered the atrocities of the Canadian First World War Internment Camps, honoured our Second World War Ukrainian Killed in Action Soldiers, thanked our Frontline Workers and honoured the Residential School Victims of our region.

Every speaker talked of the resilience of people to overcome the obstacles that have been put in front of them.

re·sil·ient - adjective 1. 1.

(of a person or animal) able to withstand or recover quickly from difficult conditions. “babies are generally far more resilient than new parents realize”

The Canadian First World War Internment Camps left a legacy of beauty borne of pain. Our Canadian National Parks system was built by the internees of the First World War Internment Camps.

Courted by the Canadian government to come to Canada and help create a food chain, these Ukrainian immigrants came with the promise of land and in return worked hard to produce the food Canadians needed. Then the First World War started and these people, whose only crime was being born in the Ukraine were stripped of their land and their possessions and put to work at hard labour for 25 cents per day building the national parks system.

The three main speakers for the commemoration of the Canadian First World War Internment Camps display were Reverend Matthew Drury, Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy Of Edmonton, Grande Prairie Parish, and representatives of our sponsors for this permanent display;

Ilya Khineyko of the Ukrainian Pioneers Association of Alberta-ukrainianpioneers. wordpress.com

Joseph F. Patrouch, Professor, Department of History, Classics, and Religion University of Alberta and the Canadian First World War Recognition Fund-www. internmentcanada.ca

Each and everyone of them spoke of the resiliency of the Ukrainian people. They spoke of hope and futures and while touching on it, they did not dwell on the pain.

When we unveiled the Second World War Killed in Action soldier’s display sponsored by the Shevchenko Foundation, both Father Drury and Ilya Khineyko spoke of resilience, determination and the future that was being fought for at the time.

When we unveiled the frontline responders plaque that honoured all of those who worked tirelessly in our communities to keep this province and country moving during the pandemic, the discussion centred around the resiliency and often the creativity of everyone.

Locally, the pandemic saw seniors serenaded by musicians from the street while the seniors either stayed in their rooms with windows open or were brought outside and physically distanced in their wheelchairs and walkers. Joy was found amongst the fear, pain and sorrow.

Last but not least was the Residential School Display and its unveiling and commemoration.

To a person, Grand Chief Noskey, Michelle Knibb from Kapawe’no First Nation, President Ridsdale from the Metis Nation, all voices lifted the word resilient up.

Planning underway for new BC plant and animal health lab

The B.C. government is planning to build a new Plant and Animal Health Centre to provide diagnostic services that support agricultural producers, food safety and the growth of a resilient food system in the province.

The new facility will be based in the Fraser Valley and designed to offer laboratory services to B.C.’s agricultural and veterinary sectors, including disease and virus diagnosis in wild and domestic birds, mammals, fish, reptiles and amphibians, as well as hundreds of plant pests and diseases.

“We know how crucial it is for farmers to have access to prompt plant and animal health diagnosis locally,” said Pam Alexis, Minister of Agriculture and Food. “A new Plant and Animal Health Centre is part of our government’s commitment to help our agriculture sector succeed through challenging times.”

Though it has returned to near full operations and services, the current Plant and Animal Health Centre in Sumas Prairie was severely damaged by the 2021 flooding and is at risk of future flooding. A business plan is being prepared for a new facility that will provide enhanced animal and plant health services to B.C. producers in a more secure setting.

“Healthy plants and animals are critical to B.C.’s agriculture sector and to the farmers and ranchers whose livelihoods depend on them,” said Stan Vander Waal, president, BC Agriculture Council. “The investment made by the Province demonstrates that agriculture is valued in British Columbia and working to ensure our communities’ food security.”

The business plan is expected to be complete in late 2023 and will identify potential locations for the centre, as well as opportunities for additional supporting locations with specialized services in other parts of the province.

The new centre will work to involve partnerships with academic institutions and public health agencies, as well as building on the current operational model, which is regarded as Western Canada’s leading full-service veterinary laboratory.

“The loss of the lab during the 2021 flooding was devastating to the agricultural community. We are excited to hear that a new higher-capacity lab will be located in a safer area of the Fraser Valley,” said Katie Lowe, executive director, BC Egg. “The lab staff have worked tirelessly to support poultry farmers during the avian influenza outbreak and we thank them for their dedication. A new lab will only improve the already excellent work being done there.”

The B.C. Animal Health Centre currently handles more than 6,000 case submissions annually while diagnosing, monitoring and assisting in controlling and preventing diseases such as avian influenza, West Nile virus and bovine spongiform encephalopathy (mad cow disease). It is one of three laboratories in Canada accredited by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD) and one of two with AAVLD and International Organization for Standardization accreditation.

More than 40 scientists work in the Animal Health Centre providing diagnostic services to British Columbians.

The Animal Health Centre offers high-quality fee-for-service tests include pathology, bacteriology, serology, and molecular diagnostics and virology for veterinarians, livestock producers, the general public and other government agencies.

The Animal Health Centre also provides diagnostic services for companion animals, captive and free-ranging wildlife, zoo animals, fish, fur-bearers and bees.

The Plant Health Laboratory provides diagnostic services for plant health problems affecting crops and plants grown in B.C., including infectious diseases and insect pests for commercial crop growers as well as the public.

The Plant Health Laboratory also supports plant-related research of emerging and current plant health threats by developing and validating new tests or methods and supporting projects that address plant health threats.
