PRRD brings back free information sessions and workshops through the Grant Writer Services program
In partnership with Clear Course Consulting, the PRRD is offering four free grant writing opportunities for community groups in the Peace region.
An Introduction to Grant Writing information session is available on Wednesday, April 19 (9am to 10:30am) and Thursday, April 20 (7pm to 8:30pm). In this session, participants will learn about how grants work, understanding types of funders and grants, searching for grants, ensuring projects are grant-ready and about the PRRD’s Grant Writing Services program.
A How to Write a Successful Grant Application workshop is available from 9am to 12pm on Friday, April 21 and Saturday, April 22. In this workshop, participants will receive a high-level overview of how grants work, understanding application guidelines, how to demonstrate a need for funding, knowing which documents to submit with an application and building a budget.
The Grant Writer Services program has connected directly with non-profits in the community through the information sessions and workshops since 2021, and the events have grown in popularity with each year. Residents are encouraged to secure a spot by registering early by visiting prrd.bc.ca/services/grants or by calling 250-784-3200.
Director Kealy set to connect with residents at community meeting in Rose Prairie
The newly elected Director of Electoral Area B has set a community meeting for March 30 at the Rose Prairie Curling Club. The Peace River Regional District last held what is sometimes referred to as a “roundtable” in Area B in 2018, chaired by the former and now alternate, Director Karen Goodings. With COVID-19 restrictions no longer an obstacle, the PRRD is clear to return to more in person events throughout the year.
The community meeting is an opportunity for residents to connect with their local government representative and bring forward their priorities and concerns. The PRRD will provide an update on the Rose Prairie water station, which has been closed since March 2021, and provide refreshers on regional initiatives and services.
Residents can RSVP to the event or pose questions in advance of the meeting on the Rose Prairie Community Meeting event page on Facebook, @prrdofficial. Event inquiries can also be directed to the PRRD at 250-784-3200 or communications@prrd.bc.ca.
Next PRRD Board eetings:

Canada’s farmland values climb
The average value of Canadian farmland increased by 12.8 per cent in 2022, amid strong farm income, elevated input prices and rising interest rates. The demand for farmland remained robust and the supply of farmland available for sale continues to be limited, according to the latest FCC Farmland Values Report.
Farmland values saw the highest increase since 2014 and follow gains of 8.3 per cent in 2021 and 5.4 per cent in 2020.
“Challenging economic conditions could have been expected to slow the demand for farmland and the resulting price buyers paid for land in 2022,” said J.P. Gervais, FCC’s chief economist. “But the underlying fundamental factors in the farmland market tell another story.”
FCC estimates that receipts of grains, oilseeds and pulses in Canada have increased 18.3 per cent in 2022, and are projected to grow 9.4 per cent in 2023.
“Higher farm revenues are driving the demand for farmland, but higher borrowing costs and increased input prices are expected to lead to declines in the number of sales in 2023,” according to Gervais.
The highest average provincial increases in farmland values were observed in Ontario, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick, with increases of 19.4, 18.7 and 17.1 per cent, respectively.
Saskatchewan followed with a 14.2 per cent increase. Five provinces had average increases below the national average at 11.6 per cent in Nova Scotia, 11.2 per cent in Manitoba, 11 per cent in Quebec and 10 per cent in Alberta.
British Columbia is the only province to have recorded a singledigit increase at eight per cent, but it is also a market where land values are the highest on average.
There was an insufficient number of publicly reported sales in Newfoundland and Labrador, Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon to fully assess farmland values in those regions.
“It’s good practice to have and maintain a risk management plan that takes into account possible economic changes,” said Gervais. “When producers ensure their budgets have room to flex if commodity prices, yields or interest rates shift.

How will this research impact Alberta’s agriculture industry?
Alberta has a high prevalence of Johne’s disease (JD), a chronic intestinal infection caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP). This research fits in the desire of the dairy industry to reduce potential food safety risk by eliminating MAP from dairy product food supply.
Vaccination is a logical JD control measure, but the development of a quality vaccine has proven difficult. A live attenuated vaccine against JD is most promising to protect calves against MAP infections.
The advantage of using a vaccine to control JD is that the reduction in infections and consequently shedding of MAP on a farm will go down with every additional animal that is being vaccinated. In other words, vaccination is expected to have a positive cumulative effect on the burden of the disease on a farm.
Why did RDAR invest in this research project?
The proposed research benefits and fits in the desire of the dairy industry to reduce potential food safety risk by eliminating MAP from dairy product food supply. There is continuing concern that
MAP might have public health implications. The associated risks can best be addressed by trying to control and eliminate MAP from the dairy industry. Elimination of infection with MAP will also have important direct economical benefits do the dairy producers as even subclinical MAP infections in dairy cows lead to reduced milk production, reduced carcass weight, reduced fertility and increased culling.
How will research knowledge be transferred and shared with producers?
Knowledge generated from this project will be readily transferred through the members of the research team to the dairy industry, with an emphasis on the producers and their herd veterinarians. This research group has a strong relationship with the dairy industry in Alberta.
Project researchers will strive to ensure that researchers, producers and professionals in the Western Canadian dairy industry are beneficiaries of the novel and up to-date information gathered in this study and the actual vaccine. This team has demonstrated their research outcomes at the Western Canadian Dairy Seminar over the last several years.

Clearwater County’s Agriculture and Community Services Department receives a high number of inquiries about local rental rates. To get accurate information for rental rates, the county is conducting a survey. Once completed, data will be available to the public to allow for a better understanding of the overall situation for producers and landlords in Clearwater County.
The survey is open until May 31, 2023.
Since 2018, the Government of Alberta no longer consistently tracks farmland rental rates. With changes in crops that are grown, increases in both yields and commodity prices, the available figures are no longer current or relevant.
Clearwater County’s Agriculture and Community Services Department receives a high number of inquiries about local rental rates, this data is being collected to assist in information
distribution to County residents.
Once completed, this data will be available to the public to allow for a better understanding on the overall situation for producers and landlords in Clearwater County. Your feedback is greatly appreciated and the results will be available here, on our website, and distributed to our agricultural community.
The complete online survey is available below, paper copies are available at County Administrative buildings (or you can click here to download a paper copy!).
If you have any questions or issues with the survey please contact Agriculture & Community Services at 403-845-4444 or admin@ clearwatercounty.ca.

Canola disease survey recap to inform risk management in 2023
Hindsight is 20/20, and this can be a positive thing. For instance, reviewing canola disease results from the 2022 surveys and recalling management decisions made in 2022 can provide insight on potential risks and optional improvements for the upcoming growing season. This blog summarizes the Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta 2022 canola disease survey results for blackleg, clubroot, sclerotinia, verticillium stripe as well as some resources options to support your disease management practices in the 2023 crop year.
Alberta’s annual canola disease survey is carried out by Alberta Agriculture in collaboration with AAFC, the University of Alberta, Olds College and additional contributors. The Alberta canola disease survey is done in collaboration with the Alberta Association of Agricultural Fieldmen. It aims to evaluate 1% of canola fields in each county/MD in Alberta that has canola growing. The survey achieved 322 fields in 2022.
Key summary notes from Michael Harding’s Field crop disease update for 2022 during Agronomy Update 2022 included that some diseases very responsive to weather, clubroot on canola continues to spread and blackleg levels in canola higher in 2022. More specifically the disease survey revealed:
Clubroot prevalence was 10.8% and estimated disease incidence was 20%. Blackleg prevalence was 99.1%, incidence was 26.5% and average severity was 0.54.
SclerotinIa stem rot prevalence was 44.5% and incidence was 3%.
Symptoms of verticillium stripe were observed in seven fields (2% prevalence), however, laboratory testing failed to confirm the presence of V. longisporium. For the past three years surveys have revealed 2-5 fields with symptoms suspicious for V. longisporum, but none have tested positive thus far.

Participate in Plot2Farm
Plot2Farm is the on-farm research program by Alberta Wheat and Barley Commissions. The goal is simple, bringing agronomic management research to the farm-gate.
Marking its fourth year of trials, Plot2Farm is looking for participants for the 2023 growing season.
Do you have a variety, fertilizer or management practice that you want to try but still on the fence? Plot2Farm will provide the support and guidance to evaluate genetics and agronomy management right on your own farm. It’s a win-win situation: farmers can use Plot2Farm to take their agronomic management to the next level, and the commissions will gain valuable information to share with farmers and agronomists.
Small plot research is vital to advancing on-farm agronomic knowledge and can add further understanding to how particular management practices impact crop quality and yield on each farm. In the 2020 growing season, the Alberta Wheat and Barley
Commissions launched the on-farm research program, Plot2Farm. Plot2Farm aims to bring agronomic management research to the farmgate. Adapted from small plot research, the commissions developed farm-ready research protocols that farmers can implement on-farm with the help of an agronomist.
Through this program, farmers can evaluate agronomic questions using genetics, management and environmental conditions for their farm. Available protocols test a wide variety of agronomic management practices on both wheat and barley including seeding rates, plant growth regulators, enhanced efficiency fertilizers, row spacing, and more. The protocols are developed with the goal of producing results that farmers can use for future management decisions. Plot2Farm is designed for those farmers looking to take their agronomic management to the next level.
