More than 2,300 British Columbians responded with their ideas on how the Province can support the Agricultural Land Commission preserve farmland and encourage farming. Their input will help guide the Ministry of Agriculture as it strengthens the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC) and the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR). The consultation took place from Feb. 5 to April 30, 2018, and was led by an independent committee made up of volunteers with diverse agricultural backgrounds and experiences. The committee heard from British Columbians at stakeholder meetings in nine communities, and through written submissions and online consultation. The input the committee received will help frame its recommendations for an ALR that will serve future generations of British Columbians, and will be provided to Agriculture Minister Lana Popham this summer.

People from throughout the province participated in the consultation online, including more than 750 farmers, 115 agriculture specialists and more than 1,400 responses from the general public. There were also 240 responses from people representing an agricultural industry or interest group. South Coast residents completed 900 surveys, while submissions from the Island topped 800, with close to 200 from the Okanagan, and more than 100 from each of the North, Kootenay and Interior regions.

Evan Jamieson, from Dalemead, Alberta, is the 2018 4-H Alberta Premier’s Award recipient. Evan is a member of the Bow Valley Beef and Multi 4-H Club, and was chosen from among the province’s top 4-H members to receive this prestigious award during the annual 4-H Selections program at Olds College. The Premier’s Award was started in 1964 to recognize the accomplishments of youth in rural Alberta. 4-H members and leaders continue to be instrumental in keeping rural communities strong, developing skills in leadership and giving back to their communities through volunteer work and developing their skills and expertise in agriculture and other project areas. Fire bans go mobile The Alberta government has released a mobile fire ban app so people across the province can be aware of the wildfire risk. The new app, available for Android and Apple devices, will give people mobile access to see where there are fire bans, restrictions and advisories to help plan their camping and recreational experiences. Keeping people informed of fire bans will help them plan their summer activities safely, whether in their backyards or in Alberta’s parks and natural areas. “It is vital that Albertans be aware of any bans or restrictions throughout the province if they intend to enjoy our beautiful backcountry. This mobile app gives Albertans another way to help prevent human-caused wildfires and keep our firefighters free to fight other wildfires that may occur,” says Oneil Carlier, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry. Springtime can have a high wildfire danger rating because dry grass and leaves can provide fuel before new growth begins. Fire bans also occur throughout the warmer summer months depending on weather and moisture conditions. It’s always wise to check for Alberta fire bans before you enjoy the outdoors. Since March 1, there have been 274 wildfires in Alberta’s Forest Protection Area. Of those fires, 99 per cent were humancaused and entirely preventable. As of May 15, there were 88 fire bans and fire advisories across the province. If you see a wildfire, report it at 310-FIRE (3473).

Ag Land Commission chair named

The Government of British Columbia has appointed Jennifer Dyson as the chair of the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC). Dyson will use her experience and knowledge in agriculture to revitalize the Agricultural Land Reserve. “Jennifer Dyson’s 10 years of experience as an ALC commissioner, coupled with her work as a farmer, will be invaluable in her role as chair of the ALC,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture. “Her knowledge, passion and diverse experiences in farming give her a broad perspective about agriculture in B.C., and the background to lead the commission and support an active farming community in British Columbia.” Dyson’s experience includes serving as an ALC commissioner from 2008 to 2017. She was also chair of the island panel, and has an ongoing role in operating a familyrun water-buffalo dairy and direct farm market in the Alberni Valley. Dyson has also participated in industry and government committees regarding agriculture and the environment, supporting and promoting sustainable agricultural practices, and workforce policy. “I have a passion for agriculture, and to lead an organization with the mandate of preserving agricultural land, and encouraging farming in B.C., is truly an honour,” said Dyson. “There are challenges in agriculture today. B.C. farmers and ranchers are the unrecognized backbone

of strong local communities and progressive regions. I am committed to working for an ALC that does its part to encourage agriculture for now and generations to come.” Dyson most recently chaired the the nine-member Minister of Agriculture’s advisory committee. The committee led consultations with producers and other British Columbians throughout the province, to hear their ideas on how to revitalize the ALC. The consultation took place from Feb. 5 to April 30, 2018, and heard from more than 2,300 British Columbians at stakeholder meetings in nine communities, through written and online submissions. Dyson stepped down from the advisory committee on May 11, 2018. Committee member Vicki Huntington, former MLA for Delta South, will take on the role of chair for the advisory committee. Dyson succeeds Frank Leonard as ALC chair, who completed his term on May 14, 2018. “On behalf of the B.C. government, I would like to thank Frank Leonard for completing his term,” said Popham. “We are always appreciative of those who step up and dedicate their time in public service.” The ALC is an independent administrative tribunal responsible for administering the province’s Agricultural Land Reserve, and to preserve farmland and encourage farming.

Partnership to evolve Northwest Territories agriculture Agriculture plays an important role in the lives of all Canadians, creating good, middle-class jobs, and feeding Canadians and other countries around the world. Northwest Territories (NWT) agriculture development took a leap forward today with the official launch of the new federalterritorial agreement under the Canadian Agricultural Partnership. The Member of Parliament for the Northwest Territories, Michael McLeod, joined NWT Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment, Wally Schumann, to formalize the federal/territorial agreement at Polar Egg in Hay River — the NWT’s most successful commercial agriculture business. The Canadian Agricultural Partnership is a five-year, $3-billion cost-shared investment by federal, provincial and territorial (FPT) governments in national, regional and local agriculture initiatives. Approximately $5.6 million will be directly invested in the NWT agriculture sector under the Partnership. It will fund initiatives and investments aimed at encouraging the development of a relevant, commercially-viable food production and processing sector; and advancing greater self-sufficiency and food production in the NWT’s remote communities. Aligned with the NWT Agriculture Strategy introduced last year, the Partnership will support emerging food growers and processors encouraging greater participation and entrepreneurial interest in the NWT’s agriculture sector.

Specific programming will invest in research, innovation, sustainability, capacity building, trade, processing, public awareness, and youth involvement to ensure the sector continues to evolve. “The Government of Canada is committed to the priorities that are important to Canadians—jobs, growth, and long-term prosperity. In working with the Government of Northwest Territories through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, we will support regionally effective programs to help grow northern agriculture,” opined the Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. “Agriculture is a growing sector of our economy with the potential to provide our territory with good jobs, better food security, and more vibrant communities. This partnership will be crucial to our continued efforts to drive agriculture development in the NWT. I look forward to seeing how far these investments can take our territory down the road towards a profitable commercial agriculture industry, and a more diverse economy for our Northwest Territories,” noted The Honourable Wally Schumann, Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment for the NWT.

The role of the FPCC is to ensure that the supply management system for poultry and eggs as well as the promotion and research activities for beef cattle work in the balanced interest of all stakeholders, from producers to consumers. Council members are appointed to hold office at pleasure, by the Governor in Council upon the recommendation of the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, for terms of varying lengths. At the time of their appointment, at least half of members, not including the Chairperson, must be primary agricultural producers.

All prices are in Canadian dollars per metric tonne Market Comments - Corn, feed wheat and barley prices remained stable across the Prairies and the trade is less worried about the lack of planting progress both in Canada and the US, but now has new concerns regarding widespread lack of moisture in western Canada. Corn DDGS increased by $10-20 in all provinces amid trucking shortages and plant shutdowns due to maintenance. Protein values (soybean and canola meal) decreased by $10-15/T across the Prairies although prices are likely to increase with the latest USDA report on lower than anticipated world soybean carryover stocks. Railcar shortages are causing a delay in the movement of canola and meal, hence depressing canola meal prices. Feed peas and faba beans continued to trade in the 255-260 range in Saskatchewan, 265 in Alberta, and 265-270 in Manitoba. * Models have been updated to reflect the latest nutrient compositions of feed ingredients, which is done periodically. "Feed Pea / Faba Bean Benchmark - The feed pea/faba bean feed benchmarks are intended to be used as a pricing reference. This benchmark provides a consistent and unbiased estimate of the feeding value of peas and low tannin faba beans in the three regions shown. Feed peas and faba beans will trade at various differentials to the benchmark based on local supply/demand, quality differences and other contract terms. "Feed Pea / Faba Bean Feed Benchmark Calculation - The feed pea/faba bean feed benchmarks are an estimate of the feeding value of dry peas/low tannin faba beans in Western Canada, based on the value of competing feed ingredients in swine rations. Biweekly, tradable prices for the major feed ingredients are collected for the three regions shown above. These prices are then entered into a least cost feed formulation that is typical for grower-finisher swine in Western Canada. A feeding value is then derived for feed peas/ faba beans based on their nutritional characteristics and the prices of the competing feed ingredients. The least cost feed formulation was developed in consultation with the Prairie Swine Centre. In addition to the feed ingredients shown above, the feed formulation also includes canola oil, synthetic lysine, synthetic methionine, synthetic threonine, synthetic tryptophan, mono-dicalcium phosphate, limestone, salt, vitamins and minerals.

The case for high legume pastures Should livestock producers add forage legumes to their pastures? Livestock, forage, and beef specialists at Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AF) make the case for a high legume pasture mix. “For the typical Alberta livestock producer, perennial forages are a key part of their summer/ fall feed supply,” says Karin Lindquist, forage/ beef specialist with AF. “So, choosing forage varieties that can handle the variable weather conditions is critical to a good pasture management strategy.” “Everywhere you look in nature, many different types of plants and animals cohabitate in the same area,” adds Andrea Hanson, beef extension specialist with AF. ”In a pasture situation, why would we not try to achieve the same? Having a biodiverse plant community allows for different plant species to thrive in different conditions within the same area so that, throughout the growing season, something is always there for livestock to graze.”

“Once the forage stand is established, the plants need to set seed at least every two to three years,” adds Lastiwka. “Sainfoin has an indeterminate growing pattern, so you may find it flowering while lower down on the plant, there is already developed seed. Adding legumes to the pasture stand diversifies the plant matter above ground and to the roots. Legumes fix nitrogen in the soil which aids in the fertility of the pasture and reduces the need for nitrogen fertilizer. Sainfoin, like alfalfa, also has a deep tap root so that it can continue to grow when rain stops. Applied Research and Extension Associations in Alberta, along with a producer/cooperator for each area have been gaining experiences with high-legume pastures over the last two years. Specifically, they have been including AC Mountainview sainfoin in a high-legume pasture mix. Sainfoin, or Onobrychis viciifolia, is a forage legume that contains tannins. These tannins reduce the rate of protein breakdown in the rumen which, in turn, reduces the risk of bloat in a high legume pasture. Grazing research at Lethbridge and Swift Current has shown a 95 to 98 per cent bloat reduction when 25 per cent of sainfoin is present in an alfalfa/sainfoin stand.

What happens if there is a positive clubroot case? The farmer/landowner will be notified, along with the rural municipality. Clubroot is a declared pest under the Pest Control Act and that gives rural municipalities the authority to undertake prevention and enforcement measures. Ziesman says RM’s are encouraged to use a farmer-driven approach. “We want producers to be empowered, engaged and actually have a say in how clubroot will be managed on their farm,” Ziesman says. Ziesman envisions having a professional agrologist working with the producer on a clubroot management plan. If the plan meets a minimum set of requirements and is science-based, it will become the formal agreement between the RM pest control officer and the landowner or producer. “What we are looking for right now is a minimum standard,” says Ziesman. “Some of this is going to be fine-tuned as we talk to researchers a little bit more, but we are looking for a minimum of a two-year break between susceptible crops.” Some level of field sanitation to prevent the spread of clubroot would also be included in a management plan. “Clubroot isn’t the end of the world,” says Ziesman. “The key to clubroot management is to keep pathogen levels low.” Bottom line As a declared pest under the Pest Control Act, rural municipalities have the authority to undertake prevention and enforcement measures. Getting ahead Clubroot was confirmed in a limited number of canola fields in Saskatchewan last year in the northwest and north central areas of the province. Provincial plant disease specialist Barb Ziesman says the disease is easier to manage when it is detected early. “It gives us a chance to implement proactive management practices and enable us to continue to grow canola with minimum yield impact,” Ziesman says. The survey will be conducted in higher risk regions, such as areas near the Alberta and Manitoba borders. In all, 1,800 fields will be randomly selected. There will be one field surveyed in each township to gain a better understanding of the distribution and severity of clubroot. The testing will be conducted by Ministry of Agriculture employees. Canola plants will be pulled and soil samples taken at the field entrance since this is where clubroot is most commonly first identified. If there are visible signs of galls on the plant roots, additional samples will be taken at 10 other locations in the field. Soil samples will be tested in a lab to determine if there are low levels of clubroot pathogen in the soil. Making a clubroot map “The plan is to make producers aware of the risk in the different regions,” Ziesman says. “There will be a clubroot map similar to those released in Alberta and Manitoba.” The Ministry of Agriculture will work with researchers and grower groups, such as SaskCanola to ensure the information is released in a meaningful manner.

Weaker prices and trade barriers erected by India, the previous top buyer of Canadian pulses, led to widespread speculation that Canadian dry pea and lentil area would decline significantly in 2018. Instead, in its April seeding intentions report, Statistics Canada predicts lentil area will decline by a relatively modest 8.1 per cent from 2017 to 4.1 million acres, while pea area would fall just 5.5 per cent to 3.9 million acres. Lentils Lentil intentions were down, but not by as much as many industry participants expected. Based on overall market conditions, actual lentil area may still end up lower than the survey projects, as nothing changed on the marketing front. For what is seeded, the bulk of the reduction is expected to be biased to red lentils - and perhaps an increase in greens, as the green lentil market is not as reliant on India demand. While new crop acres will be lower than last year, there will be more than one million tonnes of old crop carried into the start of the 2018-2019 marketing year. That means new crop beginning stocks will look similar to this year. Lentil area remains too high to alter a bearish supply-demand situation for 2018-2019. Interest to plant remains because pulse prices in general have not been low enough for long enough. Lentils are also part of a growerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s core rotation and can still incrementally generate profit margin. A turn higher in the market will come, but unfortunately for red lentils it will take a year, perhaps even two. If you are willing to wait, then store. Otherwise, make the best of a difficult marketing situation. Peas Depending on what happens with price spreads between green and yellow peas, there could still be more shifting of yellow pea acres to greens. But overall acres will probably hold near steady with the StatsCan projection. A recent, slight firming price trend making yellows at $7 per bushel more readily accessible will maintain grower interest. Plus, there is ample news flow surrounding protein-fracking stories for domestic and export use, hopefully making Canada less reliant on India for yellow pea demand. It is also hard to overlook the value of peas as animal feed. Compared to very strong soymeal prices, yellow peas at $7 can look attractive to a feed user.

Indian buyers are still asking about Canadian yellow peas for early fall shipping and it helps add some price support. While premature to be overly enthusiastic, the demand factor for peas looks increasingly promising in the year ahead, despite the India trade hijinks, and I suspect we’ll be surprised in a year’s time how quickly Canadian yellow pea inventory gets used up. Bottom line Canadian farmers will plant

fewer acres to peas and lentils in 2018, but current data, like the fact that China is purchasing more alternative feed protein ingredients like peas, suggests the cut will be less than initial trade projections. Putting the Glide in your ride Put the Glide in your Ride is a catchy slogan for “Shocker Air Ride Hitches.” I happen to own one and my horses sure are happy about it. The air ride system is designed to give the horses in the trailer and the humans in the pickup a smoother ride and they make an amazing difference. I was on one of my many long trips with the horses in the trailer and I was thinking about all the stress they must go through being hauled. I would look in the rear view mirror when those frost heaves, bumps and potholes showed up and see how much it shook the trailer around. If you haven’t ridden in a trailer and hit a frost heave (within the speed limit, of course) you haven’t truly lived. It will give you some real perspective on what a horse goes through on their trips to wherever they are going. There are a few things we can do to help with our horses safety and comfort on long or short trips in the trailer. The Shocker Hitch is one. It not only softens the ride for the horse, there is also a very noticeable difference in the cab. When I bought mine we started down the road and didn’t have time to set the air, so we made the adjustments at a gas station (which means add air with the air hose). Anyway, the difference was surprising. We were on the road for two hours when my traveling companion looked at me and we both realized we hadn’t felt the trailer since we had set the air. There is a recommended tire pressure for your trailer and truck. The more air the stiffer the ride, less air softens the ride but you still must stay within the suggested air pres-

sures. The manufacturers of horse trailers have different suspension systems they use and some have a better ride than others. The bedding in a trailer is very important. I prefer shavings and lots of them. It can give the horses a much better cushion to stand on. However, if you go very far, they will have the shaving brushed away where their feet hit the floor and will be standing pretty much on the floor. If you are a really nice person, you can unload a few times and fix the shavings for them. However, the most important part about shavings is that the horse can urinate without getting splashed. Lots of shaving will eliminate the splashing problem, plus you can clean up the mess and keep the trailer smelling better. You might be shaking your head, but a horse will go in the long grass if given a choice rather than on any hard surface. In any pasture you will see long grass areas and short grass areas. The long grass is where they do their business the short grass is where they have been eating. The noise in a trailer is something else to check out. There should not be rattling, whistling and banging. More noise equals more stress and an uncomfortable trailer for the horse. Don’t buy a noisy trailer! If you happen to have one, it is often easy to fix much of the noises with a bit of ingenuity. Another very important thing to look for is all the places a horse might catch a halter or bang a hip. Trailers can be designed inside and out to have smooth finishes that make it almost impossible for horses to hurt themselves. Many times the cost of one vet bill will equal the

money you could have spent for a safer trailer. Check the back door where your horse steps in the trailer. Is there a sharp edge that he could hit his leg on or is there a rubber guard? Are the hinges inside and out, sticking out and waiting for a hip, shoulder or eye socket to be gouged out or are they recessed and smooth? I’m also a big fan of the angle haul trailers with dividers so that horses can see each other. Horses are herd animals and get comfort from being around other horses. Another area to check trailers is under the floor mats. How is the floor holding out? Are the boards rotting? Even aluminum floors will rot through if urine is left on it. Common theories are to make the panels solid so they won’t fight and can’t see each other. However, if the panel is low enough so they can’t kick under it or high enough so they are unable to bite over it, then this would be sufficient for me. The more boxed in the horses feel the more stressed they will be. The horses hopefully should be trailer-ready and trained so there isn’t any fighting. Sometimes a situation has occurred where I have hauled horses that aren’t as ready as they should be. I believe solid panels prolong the problem rather than help. I would like to get where I’m going with my horse learning something along the way. It’s like build-

ing a round pen that the horse can’t see out of so they will pay attention to the trainer and they can’t jump out. If that is needed, then you might think the trainer must not be very interesting and shouldn’t be putting that much pressure on the horse that it feels it needs to jump out. The trailer we use, the round pen and box stall we build all can be built and used for the horses’ comfort and development. We could build solid cages that prolong issues as well as develop new issues but, this is exactly what we should stay away from. So there are many little things we can do to make things safer, more comfortable and even help develop our horses with a bit of thought. The excitement of foaling out your mares can also bring heartbreak By Dr. Mira Kelada Foaling out mares can be both exciting and also heartbreaking. Mares typically foal without human assistance, but when there is a problem, rapid intervention is required to ensure the health and safety of the mare and the foal. Foals are much less likely to survive birthing problems than other species such as calves and lambs, so knowing when to intervene is crucial. The average gestation of a mare is 335 to 340 days, but they can foal anywhere from 320 to 365 days and have a normal full term foal. Be ready to expect a foal anytime during these possible dates. Mares prefer to foal at night and they seem to have some control over when they deliver their foal, thus it can be a challenge to witness the delivery. Mares may foal out in a clean open field or in a stall. The advantage of an open pasture is that there is lots of room for the mare to foal and it is generally cleaner than a stall. If the mare is going to foal in a stall, make sure that the dimensions are a minimum of 14 x 14 feet so that the mare has plenty of room for delivery. A mare’s udder will begin to fill with milk approximately 2-4 weeks prior to foaling. It is common to see some swelling (edema) along the midline of the mare in the month before foaling. Approximately 4-6 days before foaling, the teats become engorged and swollen. A sign of possible impending foaling is ‘waxing’ of the teats, which typically happens 1-4 days prior to delivery. This waxy secretion is colostrum, which is the special ‘milk’ that a foal must drink after it is born. However, not every mare will wax her teats! The mare may appear uncomfortable and

restless in the day or so prior to foaling. Monitor mares closely as they approach their foaling date to see subtle clues about impending labour. Labour consists of three stages. The first stage lasts 1-2 hours and begins with contractions. These contractions move the foal in to the birth canal. When the fetal membranes (‘water bag’ or allantois) become visible in the mare’s vulva and break, stage one ends. The second stage of labour is the delivery of the foal. Mares should deliver their foal within 20-30 minutes following delivery of the water bag. If a mare is actively pushing for at least 10-15 minutes after having delivered her water bag, and there is no sign of a foal and no evidence of any progression of the foaling, you should call your veterinarian immediately. If there seems to be progression, then monitor. You should see two front feet and a nose for a normal delivery. If you do not see any legs, or if you don’t see a nose coming with two legs, or if you see three legs protruding from the vulva, call your veterinarian immediately. If you see a ‘red bag’ protruding from the vulva instead of the white coloured fetal membranes, this is an emergency situation. Call your veterinarian immediately for counsel, but you should be prepared to attempt to deliver the foal on your own. The velvety ‘red bag’ is the chorioallantoic membrane of the placenta and indicates premature separation of the placenta from the uterine wall. In these cases, the foal is not getting oxygen anymore and must be delivered promptly otherwise it will suffocate. If you are unsure if you are seeing a red bag, call your veterinarian immediately and send a photo to them! Mares are much more fragile than cows, so be cautious when

pulling and call your veterinarian if you are not sure how to proceed when assisting the mare to deliver. If a foal is delivered normally, stage three then begins. This is the stage in which the placenta (afterbirth) is passed. The placenta should be passed within 1-3 hours after the foal is delivered. If the placenta has not been passed within three hours, call your veterinarian. A retained placenta in horses is an emergency (unlike cows), and can cause serious problems including severe infection and laminitis. Following a normal birth, monitor the mare and foal from a distance. Allow them to bond and be undisturbed. The foal should make attempts to stand within 30 minutes after birth and foals should nurse colostrum within 2-3 hours of birth. If you do not observe the foal nursing, you may need to ensure that the foal drinks colostrum by bottle feeding it yourself. Colostrum is rich in antibodies and provides foals with immunity to prevent disease. Foals MUST drink colostrum in the first 12 hours of life (preferable within 2-6 hours of birth for optimal absorption). If foals do not drink colostrum during this time frame, they can be immune-compromised and can suffer severe health problems. If you have any questions about foaling mares, or if you are unsure whether a mare needs assistance, err on the side of caution and call your veterinarian immediately. Pic, a “Red Bag” delivery.

Smoky portobello ‘shroom cheeseburgers

Heat an outdoor grill to medium-high heat (375°F to 425°F). Whisk together the Dijon and mayonnaise in a small bowl and set aside. Brush mushrooms on both sides with the oil, then season with salt and pepper. Place the mushrooms on the grill stem-side down, cover, and grill for 4 minutes. Flip the mushrooms, cover, and grill until mushrooms are tender, about 4 minutes more.

Divided the Gouda among the mushroom caps. Arrange the buns cut-side down on the grill. Cover and cook until the cheese is melted and the cut sides of the rolls are golden-brown, about 1 minute more. Place the bottom halves of the buns cut-side up on plates and spread with half of the Dijonaise. Top each with a mushroom. Top with the peppadews and arugula. Spread the cut side of the bun tops with the remaining Dijonnaise, place on the arugula to close the burgers, and serve. Recipe Notes No-grill option: You can also bake the mushrooms instead of grilling them: Heat the oven to 425°F. Place the oiled and seasoned mushrooms on a rimmed baking sheet stem-side down and roast until just tender, about 15 minutes. Flip them, fill the caps with the Gouda, and continue to bake until the cheese is melted, 2 to 3 minutes. Toast the buns in the oven.

Tomato chickpea salad Serves 4 For the salad: 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 (15-ounce) can garbanzo beans, drained and rinsed Kosher salt 2 teaspoons ground cumin 2 pints cherry tomatoes, halved 1/4 cup chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley leaves For the vinaigrette: 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 tablespoon sherry vinegar 1 teaspoon minced shallot Kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper For the salad: Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until shimmering. Add the beans and spread out into a single layer. Cook without stirring until lightly browned on the bottom, 3 to 4 minutes. Stir, add a big pinch of salt, and spread the beans

out again. Cook for another 2 minutes, then stir and spread out again as needed, until golden-brown and blistered on all sides. From start to finish, this will take about 6 to 7 minutes total. Remove from the heat, add the cumin, and toss to coat. While the chickpeas are cooking, make the vinaigrette. For the vinaigrette: Whisk the oil, vinegar, shallot, a pinch of salt, and a few grinds of black pepper together in a large bowl. Add the chickpeas, tomatoes, and parsley to the vinaigrette. Toss everything to combine. Taste and adjust seasoning, adding more salt and pepper as needed. Recipe Notes Storage: Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Using tongs, transfer the pork to a rimmed baking sheet (lined with aluminum foil if broiling). Remove and discard the bone if needed and any large chunks of fat, then use 2 forks to shred the meat into large chunks. The pork can be served at this point or browned in the broiler.

Place the garlic and chipotles around the pork. Pour the diced tomatoes and their juices and the liquid around the pork. Cover and cook until the pork is fork tender or falling off the bone, about 8 hours on the LOW setting.

For the pickled onions: 1 cup distilled white vinegar 1 cup water 1 tablespoon granulated sugar 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1 medium red onion, halved and thinly sliced For the steak: Cooking spray 1 pound sirloin steak 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper For the sandwiches: 1/3 cup mayonnaise 1/4 cup whole-grain mustard 1 1/2 cups arugula 4 onion rolls, sliced in half lengthwise Make the pickled onions: Place the vinegar, water, sugar, and salt in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally to dissolve the sugar. Place the onion in a heatproof bowl and pour the pickling liquid over it; set aside while you cook the steak. Coat a wire rack with cooking spray and fit over the baking sheet.

Pat the steak dry with a paper towel. Season both sides with the salt and pepper and place on the wire rack. Flip the steak and continue broiling until well-browned and charred at the edges, 4 to 5 minutes more for medium-rare, or 6 to 7 minutes more for medium. Let the steak rest for 10 minutes on the rack. Assemble the sandwiches: Whisk the mayonnaise and mustard together in a small bowl. Drain the onions through a finemesh strainer and discard the liquid. Transfer the steak to a cutting board and thinly slice across the grain. Spread a thick layer of Dijon mayonnaise on the cut sides of the rolls. Divide the steak and arugula between the rolls and close them to form sandwiches. Serve warm or at room temperature. Early signs point to strong Prairie winter termine if winter wheat survived in some parts of Alberta, particularly northern regions where spring gets a later start. But she adds observations so far range from excellent to fair shape. Southern Saskatchewan, however, was one of the driest areas last fall and its recovery remains behind. Early signs, however, show 70 per cent viability in the soils that have been checked already, Paly says. A winter wheat field south of Moose Jaw revealed promising results, Saskatchewan Agriculture crops specialist Cory Jacob says. Seven or eight of the 10 plants dug up showed new growth. “We were surprised to see the plant stand that we saw in Moose Jaw, as that area had record low rainfall,” Jacob says. “Overall, I think we will be surprised as to how well the winter wheat has survived the

non-ideal fall and winter.” Be patient “Winter wheat is quite hardy and we say that it isn’t time to jump the gun yet about winter kill,” says Jacob. Be patient, urges Paly, who encourages growers not to rush into terminating their winter wheat fields. “Ideally you want to look at 20 plants per square foot, but a thin plant stand at 10 to 15 plants per square foot can still produce an adequate crop,” Paly says. She recommends growers apply spring nitrogen as soon as they can to give their plants a kick-start.

“Early weed control is also important as thin stands will be less competitive with weeds,” adds Kirk. The Western Winter Wheat Initiative offers advice on winter wheat assessment and several tips to keep in mind during assessment. Bottom line Winter wheat recovery is good so far, but growers seeing poor results should exercise caution and take steps to ensure their crops have the best chance of survival. Prairie winter wheat seems to have survived periods of extreme cold and low snowfall, preliminary findings indicate. “Across the Prairies, the recovery has been anywhere from excellent to fair,” says Western Winter Wheat Initiative agronomist Janine Paly. Autumn Manitoba, central to northern Alberta and northern Saskatchewan experienced similar conditions last fall, receiving beneficial moisture that helped winter wheat develop into its ideal growing stage, Paly says. “I have also heard good things about survival from some farmers,” adds cereals specialist Anne Kirk of Manitoba Agriculture. Her department’s first crop report of the year states winter cereals are in generally good condition. Paly says it’s still too early to de-

A strengthening global economy and growing world population will support increased demand for red meats. Global beef exports are expected to increase 5% in 2018, while pork exports are forecast to increase 1%. Canada is the world’s sixthlargest beef exporter representing nearly 5% of world beef exports and totaling 480,000 metric tons. Canada is the third-largest pork exporter behind the European Union and the United States, representing 16% of world pork exports and totaling 1,400,000 metric tons. The Canadian and U.S. red meat sectors are highly integrated with roughly 60% of Canada’s red meat exports destined to the U.S. CPTPP provides an opportunity for Canada to diversify its export destinations towards high-value and fast-growing economies in Asia and South America. CPTPP member countries currently account for around 20% of Canada’s total red meat exports. Canada exported over $1.8 billion worth of bovine and swine products to CPTPP countries in 2017. What will help grow our exports The timeline for the reduction in tariffs ranges between two and 15 years for beef and pork products. Tariff reductions will include: Beef Japanese tariffs of 38.5% on fresh/ chilled and frozen beef, as well as tariffs of 50% on certain offal will be reduced to 9% within 15 years; tariffs of up to 50% on processed beef will be eliminated within 15 years. Vietnamese tariffs of up to 31% on fresh/chilled and frozen beef will be eliminated within two years; tariffs of up to 34% on all other beef products will be eliminated within seven years. Pork

Japanese over-gate price tariff of 4.3% on fresh/chilled/frozen pork cuts and pork offal will be eliminated within 10 years. The under-gate price tariff will be reduced within 10 years. Japanese tariffs of up to 20% on pork products not currently subject to the gate price system will be eliminated within ten years. Vietnamese tariffs of up to 27% for fresh/chilled and frozen pork will be eliminated within nine years; tariffs of up to 31% on all other pork products will be eliminated within nine years. Opportunities lead to higher profitability The U.S. is currently exploring bilateral negotiations with Japan, the largest and highest valued market for red meat exports under CPTPP. Canada’s first-mover advantage allows for the establishment of improved relationships with buyers in export markets. Canada’s market share in the Japanese imports of pork increased from 17% in 2013 to 21% in 2017 reflecting the strong demand for Canada’s high-value products. At the same time, U.S exports of pork products to Japan have declined with the U.S. market share of Japanese pork imports declining from 41% to 33%. Tariff reductions in some cases can make the price of further processed products less expensive relative to primary processed meat products. That can lead to changes in the composition of Canadian meat exports. Larger export demand for Canadian meat can result in higher productivity investments and expansion. And stronger demand for Canadian livestock will lead to higher profitability across the entire supply chain.

Late spring doesn’t mean forgetting on the farm safety A late spring doesn’t mean forgetting about on-farm farm safety. By Canadian Agricultural Safety Association It has been a long winter by all accounts. Farmers across the Prairies are anxious to get the seed in the ground. According to the Canadian Agricultural Injury Reporting data, agriculturerelated fatalities happen most often from May to October. Of course, this makes sense, as this is when the majority of farming occurs; however, understanding factors that lead to these farm incidents is the first step in preventing injuries. The greatest part of injury prevention is understanding that small changes and actions can influence major outcomes. For every incident that occurs, there may be as many as 10 to 20 contributing factors. Factors include things like lack of training, fatigue, frustration and poor maintenance. There are steps you can take to lessen the influence of these factors. Planning, preparing and being active in planning tasks and jobs are measures anyone can take before starting or assigning a farming task. Just like in other daily activities, be it washing the dog or making a meal, farm tasks go a lot more smoothly if planning and preparation take place. Do you have the right tools for the job? Fatigued farming leads to bad choices that can lead to a fatal mistake. Follow good sleep hygiene practices There are plenty of resources online with tips on how to achieve a good night’s sleep. Talking about the Women Phantoms! Marilyn Dolen The Phantoms Ladies Hockey team has a relatively short history. It was during the winter of 1979/80 that a handful of brace and determined women first hit the ice. They hit it hard. The first big hurdle was learning how all that hockey equipment went on. This was very important because of the rough body contact association with the sport. The next year with eh a full team and brimming confidence, and with Pat Morrison and sidekick Robert Phoenix on the bench, the ladies entered an outdoor tournaments They experienced the glory of a few goals, a fight, and the agony of defeat. In 1982, Fourth Creek Construction donated uniforms and more equipment, and the ladies chose a name for themselves. The Phantoms was picked, as the ladies never had a ghost of a chance of winning. The team battled against archrivals in Fairview and pesky peewee boys. They hit the road to Chetwynd Hudson Hope and Worsley by 1984By 1987 the attendance and uniform colours began to fade. I never tripped her ref, she ran into me!â&#x20AC;? Top, the 81/82 team and the 82/83 Phantoms.

They’ll drink to that — clean water boosts weight gain Giving cattle access to clean water can improve herd health and increase weight gain and backfat. A 2005 study reported that calves whose dams drank from water troughs gained on average 0.09 pound per day more than those

with access to a dugout. Because water and forage intake are closely related, as cows drink more water they also spend more time eating and therefore produce more milk for their calves. Calves with access to clean pumped water

were on average 18 pounds heavier at weaning time. A 2002 study found calves with dams drinking clean water gained nine per cent more weight than calves with dams with access to the drinking pond. Contaminated water also reduces water consumption and weight gain. The 2005 study found that calves provided with water aerated and pumped to a trough in early summer tended to have greater gains (0.18 and 0.19 pound per day respectively) than ones drinking directly from a dugout. This appears to be related to improved water palatability, with aeration and pumping to a trough improving weight gain nine to 10 per cent over a 90day grazing period in most years.

The same study also found yearling steers had eight to nine per cent higher weight gain when they had access to water that had been coagulated or aerated. Steers gained three per cent more weight with access to untreated pumped dugout water versus direct dugout access. In addition, a water system results in fewer disease problems, provides water source protection, reduces soil erosion, is safer, improves pasture usage, and enhances wildlife habitat. A water systems calculator that estimates the potential economic benefits and costs of alternative watering systems can be found at the Beef Cattle Research Council website.

Post Offices and first routes When the settlement began, Mr. and Mrs. Milldrum’s homestead was the centre of the community. Anyone going to town brought the mail back to Mr. Milldrum and his family sorted it. In 1924 Milldrum was named postmaster of Blueberry Mountain PO and his daughter the assistant. Mail went in and out once a week. The first mail carrier was WH McCullough. The PO was moved to the store in 1946, to McClusky for a

year before going to Jack Bird. Harry Hawrylenko hauled mail twice a week from 1949 to 1961. Mrs. WL Scott has the PO at Whitburn from 1929 to 1967. In May 64 a route was established between Blueberry and Spirit River. Norm Fitzsimmons did the route three times a week. Transport bill delays blasted Delays in passing Bill C-49, the Transportation Modernization Act, means farmers could see another crop year with no mechanisms in place to hold the railways accountable, say the Alberta Wheat Commission and Alberta Barley. Political manoeuvring has stalled the legislation and there’s an increasing risk the bill won’t become law before the House of Commons takes its summer break on June 22.

“That means we’re running the risk of seeing another backlog before we can recover from the millions of tonnes still left in the system from this year’s delays,” said Alberta Wheat chair Kevin Bender. The two commissions note it will take several months before some provisions in the bill can be enacted. “We need to see Bill C-49 passed now,” said Alberta Barley chair Jason Lenz.

Fourth case of equine infectious anemia Another case of equine infectious anemia, the fourth this year, has been confirmed in Alberta by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. The horse in Clearwater County (west of Red Deer) had not been displaying any symptoms, but was sampled by a vet to comply with an organized club’s requirements. The Office of the Chief Pro-

vincial Veterinarian has sent a letter to horse owners in the county, warning them to be on the lookout for signs of the federally reportable disease (which poses no threat to humans). Info on EIA can be found at the CFIA website. Two cases have been found in Sturgeon County and one in Strathcona County (both near Edmonton).

Women, children and seniors that experience abuse are too often turned away from shelters for a lack of space. When that happens, the case workers take that experience home with them and it destroys these helpers as they feel helpless. The Ride for Mom is all about changing the dialogue about domestic abuse and of course raising much needed funds and awareness. It is important that these shelters get more funds, and I think it is essential that the Ride for Mom grows across the country until one day, shelters and this kind of awareness and financial support is no longer needed. Krysta Shields, the ride’s founder, wants to urge people who would like to start a Ride for Mom in their area to reach out. Rob Truscott who is a member of the military and has attended a number of events summed up what everyone else had to say: “This is one of the better rides I have ever been on. Water at every stop, the Sheriffs and regional police departments blocking intersections to ensure everyone gets safely through. What more can a person ask for?” Well how about a blocked off street in Tofield and Sheriffs with a sense of humour? In all this ride is comprised of three stops and at each stop you get a numbered ticket that gets you a chance on one of the big basket giveaways filled with prizes: 1) Reynolds Alberta Museum in Wetaskiwin. 2) Camrose Alberta, this year was at the House of Thunder. 3) The Tofield stop last year was at Town Hall and Library, this year at the Moonshine Cafe and the whole block was cordoned off for us! Everything went smoothly as there were lots of signs guiding us all as to which way to go and in many cases there was also a Sheriff or a police officer to ask. The chase truck and trailer had to pick up one rider with a flat tire, but other than that, it was smooth riding. $20,000 was raised and ALL OF THAT money, thanks to the hard fundraising work by Krysta Shields, will go to the cause directly.

Because of his participation, his “brothers” stepped up to help this worthy cause and they do so with a great sense of humour and community. Tyler Grant who does the inhouse photography and media collection and dissemination for Blackjacks Roadhouse and does a good job of keeping their social media rocking and he was busting his butt behind his camera. Various groups have decided to make this event a mandatory event for their membership to attend, the Guardians of the Children are one such group and I interviewed Clint AKA Dragon about what this event means to their club and as suspected it’s message and cause dovetails with the help to children in distress that the Guardians offer. The sponsors that came on board this year were incredible: ATB Financial, Klondike Insurance Agencies, Pratts Food Service, Harley-Davidson of Edmonton, CTV, Heritage Harley-Davidson, Reynolds-Alberta Museum, Town of Tofield, Airways Country Inn, Peace Hills Insurance, Battle River Landscape Supply and Design, Wetaskiwin Coop, Alberta Sheriffs,Victim Services Camrose, Alberta Cycle, House of Thunder Camrose, Moonshine Cafe Tofield. I was so honoured to again support this event. On a personal note.... I got pretty emotional when we

We did, sort of finally get me connected but on the phone and the stream went live after we were done - I have discovered how stressful a live event can be when you are at an event and on really tight time frames and no crew to help you when things don’t go right. I am afraid my stress cracks were showing a tad as I almost had to pack up and go do interviews for regular TV and forget about the live event totally. Manon, a Blackjack’s Roadhouse employee (who is also my friend) who was doing everything she could to help me get connected and kept reassuring me it would be OK and thanks to her help, it was. Manon, you are an angel. While the Live TV did not go exactly as planned, it did finally get done and that set the rest of the day up to be a great one. The rider was AMAZING. I got some great ride footage, some incredible interviews and am looking forward to editing the video for “Ride Like a Local” Season 6 on EastLink TV & on YouTube! Voice conditioning; personality goes a long way Everyone has their own specific personality that make up the distinct qualities that identify them as a person. When it comes to working a dog the handlers natural personality can have a definite impact on reactions from the dog depending on the dogs nature and temperament. The character and disposition of the dog will play a large role

in determining how he will respond to the handlers requests. For the sake of this article we will assume the dog is a middle of the road type of dog, that is neither real soft or real aggressive towards the livestock and handler, while of a medium skill level in his abilities regarding livestock. When listening to different han-

dlers work and run their dogs it soon becomes apparent that there are vast differences in how handlers and dogs integrate in their daily work together. Some handlers can ask softly and once to get a desired action while other handlers may bellow and holler loudly with no noticeable reaction from the dog. The reason for this is that the dog gets conditioned to the handlers daily habits and adjusts himself accordingly. If the handler consistently works and talks quietly while expecting the dog to listen the dog will have good listening skills as he will always be paying attention to the handlers voice. If the handler works quietly but does not expect the dog to listen the dog will be great at doing exactly as it pleases under the disguise of not understanding or hearing the handler. The other side of the coin is the handler that has a naturally loud and gruff personality. A dog may need a bit of time to realize this per-

son is not reprimanding them but rather it is a normal request from the handler with no negativity attached. As the dog comprehends he is not in trouble he will have less trouble working with the gruffness while still listening and doing a job. The Canadian cattle herd continued to be steady, but reduced feeder exports in 2017 was supportive to domestic beef production. Strong demand, especially from the global market, kept beef and cattle prices firm despite increased production. While the cattle market continued to be strong at the beginning of 2018, larger on-feed inventories and increasing feed prices could add some caution to the market going forward. Cattle inventories Canadian beef cow inventories stable January 1, 2018 total cattle inventories were up by 0.9 per cent at 11.6 million head but remained 22.1 per cent below the peak levels reported in January 2005. Since 2011, and the start of the consolidation phase, inventories are down 4.4 per cent. Beef cow numbers were up 0.8 per cent to 3.7 million head. This is the second consecutive year of larger beef cow inventories, but the increases over the two years were minor as inventories have only increased by 34,500 head, just under one per cent. Prior to the last two years, Canadian cow numbers had declined for 11 consecutive years. Beef cow numbers peaked at 5.25 million head in 2005, fell 30 per cent to a low of 3.68 million in 2016, and are currently at a similar level to where they were in 1991-92. Since 2011, and the start of the consolidation phase beef cow inventories are down 8.3 per cent. Beef cow numbers were up in all provinces except Alberta. Alberta cow numbers were down 1.3 per cent, or 20,000 head. This was like-

ly related to dry conditions in the south, and could have also been impacted due to the culling as a result of the TB case. The biggest growth was seen in Manitoba and the Atlantic provinces with cow numbers up 5.6 per cent and 5.8 per cent, respectively. Cow numbers were up 2.1 per cent in B.C., 1.6 per cent in Saskatchewan and 0.6 per cent in Ontario. The number of beef heifers held for breeding was down 0.3 per cent to 561,600 head. Breeding heifers were down 0.7 per cent in Western Canada but were up 2.7 per cent in Eastern Canada. Dry conditions in the west may have had an impact on heifer retention in the region. The number of steers rose 2.1 per cent to 1.2 million head and feeder heifer inventories were up 1.1 per cent to 740,000 head. The larger feeder cattle inventories were expected given a stable cow herd, reduced feeder cattle exports, and an increase in feeder cattle imports in 2017. Calf numbers were up by 0.1 per cent to 3.8 million head. Although feeder and calf supplies increased, this was offset by an increase in cattle-on-feed numbers, and overall, the supply of beef feeder cattle and calves outside of feedlots is down 0.1 per cent from last year, and remains eight per cent smaller than the 10-year average. U.S. herd expansion slows U.S. total cattle inventories on January 1, 2018, were reported at 94.4 million head, 0.74 per cent higher than a year ago. Compared to the two to three per cent increase in the last two years, the smaller growth this year shows that the rate of herd expansion in the U.S. has slowed and may be nearing its peak.
