“This pilot project was to develop a real, simple and reliable local agricultural system that has the best chance of producing a reliable food system across northern communities. The project proved that our cold climate adaptive technology is feasible. We can develop crops above the permafrost, and our next step is to purchase and install a greenhouse for commercial vegetable production,” said Chief Wilfred McNeely, K’asho Got’ine Community Council, Fort Good Hope.
Today, while speaking at the Sahtu Secretariat Inc. (SSI) and Sahtu Dene Council (SDC) Annual General Meeting in Tulit’a, Michael McLeod, Member of Parliament for Northwest Territories, on behalf of the Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, congratulated K’asho Got’ine Community Council on a recently completed project valued at $50,100 through the Canadian Agricultural Adaptation Program (CAAP). This investment helped the organization lead a community-scale cold-climate agriculture pilot project to assess the local soil and climate conditions required for the production of various types of vegetables, focusing on 20 potato cultivars, and provide solutions for soil quality issues.

innovative approaches and technologies used to solve challenges facing Northerners. We want to empower our communities to keep researching resourceful ways to keep their communities economically sustainable – particularly in regions with unique environmental challenges like Fort Good Hope,” chimed in Michael McLeod, Member of Parliament, Northwest Territories.
Canada’s agriculture and agri-food sector provides good, middle-class jobs across the country, while providing nutritious, high-quality foods for all Canadians. Agriculture also plays a large role in Canada’s north, with over 230 farm operators in the Yukon and Northwest Territories in 2016. As the northern agriculture industry develops, the Government of Canada continues to support our farmers and processors to ensure they have the tools needed to adapt to difficult agricultural conditions.
Team
This project is supported by the Canadian Agricultural Adaptation Program (CAAP), a funding initiative that helps the farming sector to remain competitive by piloting solutions to new and ongoing challenges Canadian Agricultural Adaptation program (CAAP) (2014-2019) is a five-year $50.3 million program. Its objective is to help the agriculture, agri-food, and agri-based products sector seize opportunities, respond to new and/or emerging issues, and find and/or pilot solutions to new and ongoing issues, so it can adapt and remain competitive.
The project concluded that, using a soil-enriching method, there is the potential to build a reliable, sustainable food system in remote northern communities. “Access to affordable, nutritious, safe and locally produced food is essential for a healthy community. Strengthening food security is a priority for the Government of Canada and projects like this will help find solutions to challenges in the north. Northern communities will be able to grow vegetables, while growing their economies and putting healthy food on the community tables,” says Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food. “I’m proud to have announced the completion of this important project. This project is a great example of the Governments support for

Let’s Grow Together To Our Valued Customers and Partners With harvest in full swing, we know this is a busy time of year for all of us in agriculture. At Bayer, this season also brings an historic milestone that will help us achieve even more together as we look toward our collective future. I’d like to take this opportunity to tell you about it. Growth – both on the farm and in our industry – requires a steady stream of new innovation. This can only be driven by ground-breaking R&D aimed at finding new solutions to the challenges you face in your fields every day. We are confident we can help make a difference. Our recent acquisition of Monsanto combines our 150-year history of innovation and service excellence with Monsanto’s portfolio of seeds, traits and data science. To say we are excited about the future would be an understatement. To our Canadian growers: Everything we do, including this acquisition, is built around helping you improve your operation. Your success is our success; it’s that simple. And we will continue to work hard in the months and years ahead to earn – and keep – your business. To our stakeholders across the industry: We won’t be successful unless you are equipped with the knowledge and support you need to keep serving the growers who depend on you in the way they’ve come to expect. You are a critical link in the support system that growers trust, and we are committed to our relationship. These are truly transformational times in our industry, but we are here to listen, answer your questions, and develop a path forward together. This is how Bayer does business. Wheat prices continue to be the worst performer of the group. While down again this morning, Garrett recapped in his regular Grain Markets Today column that, yesterday, wheat futures lost 8 – 12 cents USD / bushel in Chicago, Kansas City, and Minneapolis exchanges. Right now, there seems to be a lot of positioning for next week’s September WASDE from the USDA. We’ll be digging into all the pre-WASDE estimates on Sunday for our GrainCents readers first, but initial gut feelings are for some bearish soybean and neutral corn numbers. There is some optimism for wheat, but US exports have been fairly poor (whereas Canadian wheat exports are tracking about 2% ahead of last year. Ag Disease Abounds

All prices are in Canadian dollars per metric tonne Market Comments - Feed wheat, corn, and barley prices were generally steady across the Prairies over the past two weeks with the exception of feed wheat in Alberta, which increased $10-15/T on poor new crop prospects. Corn DDGS pricing increased by $10-20/T throughout the Prairies. The big story was the drastic drop in protein meal prices over the past week based on very bullish USDA projections on the size of the new crop about to be harvested and increased carryover stocks. Soybean meal plummeted $55-60/T and canola meal fell $30-40/T. Feed pea values remained steady, trading for $238/T in Saskatchewan, $243/T in Alberta, and $255/T in Manitoba. * Models have been updated to reflect the latest nutrient compositions of feed ingredients, which is done periodically. Feed Pea / Faba Bean Benchmark - The feed pea/faba bean feed benchmarks are intended to be used as a pricing reference. This benchmark provides a consistent and unbiased estimate of the feeding value of peas and low tannin faba beans in the three regions shown. Feed peas and faba beans will trade at various differentials to the benchmark based on local supply/demand, quality differences and other contract terms.
There have been a lot of negative headlines in the ag industry. There are the obvious ones like glyphosate and neonics trying to be and, in some cases, successfully, banned. Then there are a few others that are causing some concern with supply and demand tables. In China, there have been suggestions of wider pork bans to cull the spread of African swine fever. The UN’s Food & Agriculture Organization is making recommendations to control the deadly virus, which doesn’t harm humans, but can be 100% fatal for pigs. In Iowa, sudden death syndrome has hit the soybean crop, and “rain has taken a toll on even the best nitrogen programs.” In Western Canada, clubroot in canola fields is becoming more commonplace, with a record number of cases likely this year. I don’t think that there’ll be a production shortfall in either of these two crops this year, but it’s obviously something that’s getting more attention, especially when it starts getting press in the mainstream media. Canadian Grain Stocks Report Yesterday, StatsCan released its estimates of how much grain was left on-farm and in commercial storage as of July 31, 2018. The most notable bearish year-over-year changes we saw were in total canola, lentils, and peas inventories, up 78%, 178%, and 117% respectively. Conversely, the most bullish numbers from StatsCan were seen in barley, flax, and rye, down 41%, 47%, and 37% respectively compared to July 2017. Canadian barley exports so far this year are tracking fairly slow, down 55% year-over-year, as per the most recent report from the Canadian Grain Commission. Making Sense of These Grain Markets Yet? With harvest pressures, yield estimates, trade issues, and more all affecting grain markets right now, it can be tough to keep track of it all, especially when you’re busy in the field. This is why we started GrainCents: clear out the noise in the grain markets, so it’s easier to make sense of it all. Each of the 12 crops that we provide detailed coverage on – corn, soybeans, canola, flax, winter wheat, spring wheat, durum, oats, barley, peas, chickpeas, and lentils – goes through what’s impacting that specific market that week, as well as what we’re watching for in the weeks and months to come. Right now, there are varying yield estimates for what’s coming off the fields. That’s why we’re breaking this down and looking at all the estimates in one spot and comparing them to last year and the 5-year average. For example, here’s the range of pea yields in Alberta and Saskatchewan that we’ve seen in the past few weeks. You’ll notice that the September 2018 pea yields estimate for Alberta is missing as that’s coming out later this afternoon in this week’s Alberta crop report.
Feed Pea / Faba Bean Feed Benchmark Calculation - The feed pea/faba bean feed benchmarks are an estimate of the feeding value of dry peas/low tannin faba beans in Western Canada, based on the value of competing feed ingredients in swine rations. Biweekly, tradable prices for the major feed ingredients are collected for the three regions shown above. These prices are then entered into a least cost feed formulation that is typical for grower-finisher swine in Western Canada. A feeding value is then derived for feed peas/ faba beans based on their nutritional characteristics and the prices of the competing feed ingredients. The least cost feed formulation was developed in consultation with the Prairie Swine Centre. In addition to the feed ingredients shown above, the feed formulation also includes canola oil, synthetic lysine, synthetic methionine, synthetic threonine, synthetic tryptophan, mono-dicalcium phosphate, limestone, salt, vitamins and minerals.
At GrainCents, we get into this level of detail, package it all up, and determine if prices are undervalued (which means to wait for a better price) or overvalued (which means it is time to sell). The export and stocks charts and the yield tables that you’ve seen in this morning’s Breakfast Brief are replicated for all crops that we cover. Heading into the weekend, join us for this week’s GrainCents Digest, emailed out every Sunday morning at 8 AM EST. This week’s GrainCents will also include a look at what we’re expecting to see in next Wednesday’s September WASDE report from the USDA. To growth, Brennan Turner, President | CEO FarmLead TF: 1-855-332-7653 contact@FarmLead.com @FarmLead or @GrainCents on Twitter

Organic food and beverage products sold in B.C. must be certified As of Saturday, Sept. 1, 2018, people can buy British Columbia food products and beverages that are marketed as organic with more confidence, knowing that the products have been certified through an accredited provincial or federal program. “People are more engaged then ever with how their food is grown and processed,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture. “Requiring certification for the use of the term ‘organic’ for the sales of B.C. foods and beverages means producers are able to offer British Columbians an increased level of certainty about the farming and processing prac-

warnings.
Under a new provincial regulation, organic food and beverage operators are now required to maintain up-to-date proof of certification. The regulation follows consultation with organic operators in 2015, and a subsequent transition period that included multiple announcements, an awareness campaign targeting growers, outreach at agriculture shows, conferences, agriculture association events and annual general meetings.
Certifying bodies, such as those that are members of the Certified Organic Associations of British Columbia (COABC), will ensure organic standards and requirements are met by producers and processors. The B.C. government will enforce any misuse of the term “organic”.
Uncertified operators marketing their food or beverage products as “organic” face possible penalties, including a $350 fine.
Previously, there were no official requirements for people who were selling or marketing B.C. food prod-

“The organic sector is grateful to the ministry for introducing the new organic product regulation. This step forward is so important for consumer clarity,” said Carmen Wakeling, president of COABC. “As we transition into the new regulation, we will continue working with the ministry to build a strong organic sector in B.C.”
Certified organic operators will have the BC Certified Organic Checkmark, the Canadian organic logo or both logos on their products, as well as having valid certification at their business. COABC also maintains lists of certified organic companies operating within B.C. under the COABC umbrella. Remote Pasture Water Systems for Livestock
In the past, livestock were turned out to summer pasture and allowed to walk through and drink from any slough, creek, river, or lake available to them. In the winter, livestock either ate snow, or holes were cut in the ice of these natural water sources for them to drink from. When these natural water sources were not available, dugouts were constructed.
Today, allowing livestock direct access to surface water sources is a concern to livestock producers and to other water users. The practice is also a problem for livestock. Livestock producers want to provide a safe, reliable supply of good quality water for their livestock, and they want to increase their management to better utilize their pastures for livestock production. Many producers are using remote water systems and applying the latest technology available for extended livestock grazing and winter feeding of livestock away from the farmyard. Livestock producers, like other water users,
want to do their part to protect both natural and constructed water sources from environmental damage and to address herd health problems. Problems with Direct Watering
Allowing livestock direct access to surface water sources has led to a number of environmental, herd health and pasture utilization problems. Environmental problems Environmental problems with direct watering include the following: damage to banks of streams and dugouts siltation problems in spawning areas for fish loss of riparian habitat and vegetation loss of water storage in dugouts and streams nutrient buildup in both the source and downstream water bodies rapid growth of weeds and algae deterioration in water quality. Note: There is enough dissolved phosphorus in the manure from one cow in one day to cause an algae bloom in 250,000 gallons (over 1 million L) of water. Note: The amount of oxygen needed to decompose the manure from one cow for one day will deplete all dissolved oxygen in 8,000 gallons (over 30,000 L) of water. Herd health problems A number of herd health problems are related to direct watering: increased exposure to water-transmitted diseases, bacteria, viruses and cyst infections blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) toxins foot rot leg injuries stress death by drowning from falling through the ice or being stuck in mud reduced rates of gain. Poor pasture utilization and nutrient transfer problems Other problems with direct watering include two aspects: overgrazing near the water source poor nutrient transfer caused by an accumulation of manure in the area near the water source Pasture Water System Trials

Both poor access to water and poor water quality can affect livestock behaviour and production on pasture. In a pasture trial, however, it is extremely difficult to isolate what, how and when these factors become significant because there are so many variables in the cattle, the pasture grass, the water source and the water quality. Some pasture studies have shown a significant increase in cattle production where water was pumped to them versus direct watering from dugouts. Other studies have shown little or no improvement in cattle production. However, the studies have all shown that cattle prefer to have good quality water be pumped to them instead of direct watering from a dugout. Note: There are many benefits to pumping water to cattle and keeping them out of water sources. Remote Pasture Water Systems Benefits Benefits of a well planned and constructed pasture water system: water source protection and, thus, longer water source life improved herd health increased livestock production, in some situations better pasture utilization riparian protection and, thus, a more environmentally friendly livestock industry an alternative winter water supply and system for livestock away from the farmyard, which reduces manure hauling costs, manure buildup in the calving area and associated animal health problems. Note: Where livestock are allowed direct access for watering, the loss in dugout water storage and additional maintenance costs range from $300 to $600 per year for an average pasture dugout. Pasture Water Systems A variety of livestock watering methods are available to suit any type of pasture and location. The power options to move water to livestock include solar, wind, fuel, stream flow, mainline electricity and gravity flow.

Growing the Canadian hemp sector through investment and cannabis legislation Canada’s hemp sector is growing, with seeded crop area reaching over 138,000 acres in 2017. Hemp is increasingly used across a variety of products, including environmentally friendly clothing and building materials. It is also becoming widely recognized for its high nutritious content, including protein, omega and fibre. A strong and competitive agriculture sector is vital to Canada’s prosperity and our Government is proud to support the hemp industry, which will help grow our economy and create more jobs for our middle class. Speaking today at Manitoba Harvest Hemp Foods, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, Lawrence MacAulay, announced an investment of $330,550 to the Canadian Hemp Trade Alliance (CHTA) under Growing Froward 2, AgriRisk Initiatives. This investment is helping to develop industry grading standards to ensure Canadian hemp products are known globally as being of the highest quality. As part of the new cannabis legislation, the Government of Canada is updating the industrial hemp regulations to allow the industry to harvest the flowering heads, branches and leaves of the crop immediately. These changes will open new revenue source and market opportunities for hemp producers by enabling the sector to research the most efficient and economic ways to capture the full value of the hemp plant. Today’s announcement is part of Minister MacAulay’s “Growing Canadian Agriculture” tour, where he will meet with farmers, processors and industry leaders, and participate in rural agricultural events across the country, to hear ideas on how to capture new growth opportunities for the sector. “Our Government’s investment and recent changes to hemp regulations is providing the Canadian
Hemp industry the tools they need to get more of their world-class crops into Canadian foods and other products. This is helping to capture new and exciting market opportunities ahead, while creating well-paying middle class jobs. - The Honourable Lawrence MacAulay Minister of Agriculture and Agri-food “This investment to the hemp industry, as well as changes to regulations will help the competitiveness of local businesses like Manitoba Harvest Hemp Foods so that they can grow the local economy in northern Winnipeg and create quality, well-paying jobs.” - Kevin Lamoureux, Member of Parliament for Winnipeg North “The Canadian Hemp Trade Alliance was extremely pleased with the support of AAFC’s Agri Risk Initiative under Growing Forward 2. The Food Safety Project, conducted in 2016, was a collaboration between the CHTA and Agri-Neo Inc.
focused on determining safe and cost-effective prevention and mitigation techniques for the control of pathogens in industrial hemp.” Russ Crawford, President, CHTA Canada exported $93 million in hemp food and fibre in 2017. From January 2008 to November 2017, there were 452 products using hemp as an ingredient launched in the world. Over 54.7% of hempcontaining products launched used hemp protein as an ingredient. The CHTA is a national not-forprofit organization that represents over 260 growers across 9 provinces and promotes Canadian hemp and hemp products globally. Established in 2003, the Alliance represents those involved in Canada’s hemp industry. Members include farmers, processors, manufacturers, researchers, entrepreneurs and
marketers. On August 10, 2018, Health Canada made a revision to Section 56 of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) to allow whole plant harvest (including the flowering heads, branches, and leaves) of industrial hemp for the 2018 crop, which was previously not permitted. Farmers can immediately start researching the most efficient and economic ways to capture the full value of the hemp plant, and storing this material until it can be sold under the new Cannabis Act, which comes into force on October 17th, 2018. The Canadian Agricultural Partnership is a five-year, $3 billion investment by federal-provincial and territorial governments (FPT), which will strengthen the agriculture, agri-food and agri-based products sector, ensuring continued innovation, growth and prosperity.

New regulations on declawing cats by Dr. Zoe Ross Declawing or partial digit amputation in cats has been a controversial topic in veterinary medicine for many years. It is a procedure that some cat owners elected to have done, where the nail and the small bone attached to it would be surgically removed so that the cats could no longer scratch. In May of this year, the College of Veterinarians of British Columbia (CVBC) banned surgical declawing of cats. Scratching is considered normal behaviour in cats, but when cats either scratch people or damage furniture or carpets in the house, it can definitely be a problem. Fortunately there are several options and ways to help manage undesirable scratching. Veterinarians and others who have studied cat behaviour, understand that scratching is normal behaviour in cats. Cats will scratch to leave territorial markers – both the scratch marks and the smell from sweat glands in their paws serve to do this. They also scratch to maintain their claws for hunting purposes and to stretch and tone the muscles in their front legs. It is recognized that surgical declawing is a painful procedure and the CVBC has deemed it ethically unacceptable and no registrant is permitted to perform this as an elective procedure. Cat owners have several things they can do to
allow their cats to engage in the normal behaviour of scratching without damaging furniture. It is recommended that cats be provided with scratching posts or boards. These should be taller than a cat when it stands on its hind legs. Most cats scratch when they first get up after a nap so ideally these posts should be placed near their favorite sleeping areas. If there are multiple cats in a household, there should also be multiple scratching posts available for them. A new product called Feliscratch is available. This is a product that can be applied to the scratching post to encourage a cat to scratch in this area. Nails can be kept trimmed and nail caps can be glued onto the nails to help protect furniture from damage if cats do scratch it. The nail caps do need to be reapplied on a regular basis. Indoor cats can also get bored or stressed out so environmental enrichment can be important (examples of this are toys to play with and a safe quiet area for the cat to get away). There is also a product called Feliway which is a pheromone spray that can help alleviate anxiety and stress. The American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) website (www.catfriendly.com) has great resources for cat owners and there is information on this website on environmental enrichment and more tips on how to stop inap-

September is Dental Awareness Month! Some symptoms of equine dental disease are abnormal eating, slobbering and excess salivation, discharge or foul odor from their mouth, and refusal to eat or selective eating. You may also notice problems with training like head shaking, resisting turns, resisting bridling, mouthing or chewing the bit. Facial or jaw swelling can also be an early indicator of root infections or abnormal dentition. If you have any questions or concerns, book an exam in September and take advantage of our Dental Awareness promotions!

Cardiac care consultations start this week How would you rate cardiac care in Northeast B.C.? It’s something Northern Health wants to know, and officials will be in the region this week for a round of community consultations on prevention services, treatment, and hospital care. “Our board continues to be committed to hearing from residents,” Colleen Nyce, Northern Health board chair, said in a news release. “Heart health affects all of us, and we want to know what works, might work, or we can do better.” Consultations are planned for: Sept. 17 in Fort Nelson, at the Northern Rockies Rec Centre from 7 to 9 p.m.; Sept. 18 in Fort St. John, at the North Peace Cultural Centre from 7
to 9 p.m.; Sept. 19 in Dawson Creek, at the Fixx Urban Grill from 7 to 9 p.m.; and Sept. 20 in Chetwynd, at the Pine Valley Senior’s Rec Centre from 7 to 9 p.m. This is the the eighth community consultation Northern Health has held since 2004 to understand patient wants and needs, and feedback will help to inform planning and decision making. Consultation goals include providing information about heart health and available services, and the priorities of residents and the barriers they face in accessing care. The sessions are free to attend. Refreshments will be served.

Slow Simmered thick white bean and ham solo soup Overnight Soak: Rinse and sort the beans. Add 6-8 cups of cold water to 1 pound of dried beans. Let stand overnight or at least 8 hours. Drain and rinse the beans. Side Note: If you don’t have time to do an overnight soak, try the quick soak method: Rinse and sort the beans. Add 6-8 cups of water to 1 pound of dried beans. Bring water to a boil, boil for 2 minutes, remove from heat; cover and let stand for 1 hour. Drain and rinse the beans. Heat the olive oil in a large Dutch oven or pot over medium heat. Add onions, carrots, & celery. Cook for 4-5 minutes. Add garlic and cook for 30-60 seconds before adding stock, drained white beans, ham hock, bay leaf, sea salt and freshly cracked pepper, to taste. Cover and cook over low heat for at least 3 1/2-4 hours, stirring occasionally. Slowly break up the ham from the bone a little every time you stir the soup then remove any fat or bone from the ham hock along the way. Remove the lid from the pan for 30 minutes prior to serving, making sure all fat and bone have been remove from the soup. Taste and re-season with sea salt and freshly cracked pepper, to taste. Remove the bay leaf and ladle into bowls. Serve with salad and bread if desired. Enjoy.

Basic baked macaroni and cheese with variations What You’ll Need 1 1/2 cups uncooked elbow macaroni (6 ounces) 3 tablespoons butter (divided) 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1/4 cup milk 1 cup half-and-half (or light cream) 1/4 teaspoon paprika 1/2 teaspoon pepper (or less, to taste) 2 1/2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese (divided) 1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste) How to Make It Preheat oven to 350 F. Butter a 1 1/2-quart baking dish. Cook the macaroni in boiling salted water following the package directions; drain well and set aside. Meanwhile, melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a medium saucepan over low heat. Blend in flour, stir-
ring constantly, until smooth and bubbly. Continue cooking for 2 minutes, stirring constantly. Gradually add the milk and half-and-half. Continue cooking for about 2 to 3 minutes or until the mixture thickens and begins to bubble, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and add paprika, black pepper, and 2 cups of the cheese; stir until cheese is melted and sauce is smooth. Taste the sauce and adjust the seasonings, adding salt, as needed. Combine the cheese sauce with the macaroni and transfer to the prepared casserole dish. Sprinkle the remaining cheese over the top. Cut the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter into small pieces and sprinkle the pieces over the casserole. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes.
THORSBY STOCKYARDS PACKS THEM IN FOR THEIR ANNUAL CUSTOMER APPRECIATION DAY
Raises over $3,000 selling the first CFCW “Calves for Cancer” calf of the year.
Thorsby, AB (August 27, 2018) A capacity crowd of over 400 area cattle producers stretched the seams at Thorsby Stockyards on Monday, August 27th to take in their regular Monday cattle sale, while also enjoying their annual Customer Appreciation Day and bidding on the first CFCW “Calves for Cancer” animal of the projects 50th year. The staff at Thorsby Stockyards ran almost 1,900 animals through the ring on a very busy sale day, while also showing their appreciation to area cattle producers for their continued support of the auction market. The Customer Appreciation day sale was also the first time the auction market featured two loads of cattle for their LMA online video sale. Serving northern Alberta families since 1968, the CFCW “Calves for Cancer” project started its 50th year of operation looking to find fifty ranchers who would donate a 600 pound calf whose sale profits would go to the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton. The fiftieth calf was donated by St. Paul, Alberta native and Juno award winning recording artist Brett Kissel and the program now sits at sixty calves; now looking to double the original projection by getting to 100 calves by the end of the year. The first “Calves for Cancer” calf of the year sold to Kenneth Green for $1,545.60 who promptly donated it back where Andy Rock won a spirited bidding battle at $1,524.90. Altogether, the bidders allowed Thorsby Stockyards to send a cheque for $3,070.50 to the program. Congratulations to the TSI crew for putting on an excellent event and Thank You to all the bidders during the “Calves for Cancer” auction.

Classic southern pound cake recipe
Ingredients
speed just until blended.
3 cups superfine or granulated sugar 1 1/2 cups unsalted butter, at room temperature 6 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature 4 large eggs, at room temperature 2 large egg yolks, at room temperature 1/4 cup half-and-half 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 3 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon salt How to Make It Step 1 Preheat oven to 300ºF with oven rack in center of oven. Grease and flour a 10-inch (14-cup) Bundt pan. Step 2 Beat sugar, butter, and cream cheese with a heavy-duty electric stand mixer fitted with paddle attachment on medium-high speed until very fluffy and pale in color, 5 to 7 minutes. Add eggs,1 at a time, beating on low speed just until yellow disappears after each addition. Add egg yolks, half-and-half, and vanilla, and beat on low
9905 – 132 Ave., Grande Prairie, AB (across from Keddie’s)
Step 3 Stir together flour and salt in medium bowl; gradually add to butter mixture in 3 batches, beating on low speed just until blended after each addition, stopping to scrape down sides of bowl as needed. Remove bowl from stand, and scrape batter from paddle. Using a spatula, stir batter once by hand, scraping sides and bottom to incorporate any unmixed batter. Spoon batter into prepared pan, and gently tap pan on counter to release any large air bubbles. Step 4 Bake in preheated oven until cake is golden and a long wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean, 1 hour and 20 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes. Cool cake in pan on a wire rack 15 minutes; remove cake from pan, and cool completely on wire rack before slicing and serving, about 2 hours.

Represent canola growers in Alberta The Alberta Canola Producers Commission is seeking four canola growers to serve as directors on the board of directors for a three year term. This year, directors are needed in regions 3, 6, 9, and 12. Alberta Canola divides Alberta into 12 regions, with each region electing a producer director to represent the canola growers within that region. Visit albertacanola. com/regions for a map and information on the regions. The board of directors meets quarterly and is guided in decision
making by five committees comprised of board members and staff. The committees are: Research Governance and Finance Grower Relations and Extension Government and Industry Affairs Public Engagement & Promotion For full descriptions and committee roles, visit: albertacanola. com/committees Any producer who has paid a service charge on canola sold since August 1, 2016 can stand for election as
a director. An eligible producer can be an individual, corporation, partnership, or organization and must produce canola within the defined region in order to be nominated. A producer does not have to reside within the region. Directors: Represent the canola farmers in your region on the Board, making informed decisions on issues based in research, finance, policy, extension, and market development. Travel to 4 board meetings per
29
year. You will also have the opportunity to attend a diversity of valuable meetings, courses, conferences, and events. For complete details on becoming a director and to download nomination forms, visit: albertacanola.com/elections Nominations for the position of Director must be filed in writing at the Alberta Canola office on or before 4:00 p.m. on October 31, 2018. For more information contact, Ward Toma, general manager of Alberta Canola, at 780-454-0844.

We are living in a world where knowledge and technology are easily accessed at our fingertips for ease of learning while hands on practical skills are becoming a secondary talent. We still have not progressed to the point where livestock have a chip in them for ease of movability although it may come where one can sit in the easy chair and move them with a computer. However, for the time being we still need to rely on physically rounding up stock and distributing it where needed through sorting and moving. This brings us to the use of working stock dogs Anyone who has moved a number of livestock knows there is a whole lot more involved than getting behind the stock and running it to their destination. Over years of working with stock, people develop the skills to read and understand how stock react to movements. This knowledge is acquired from experience, hard work and sweat, not playing video games while sitting on the couch. It is getting harder and harder to find people who have some hands on experience in the livestock industry. A good alterna-
tive to finding human help is to get a working dog. A working dog possesses a whole wealth of stock knowledge that is not being tapped into. The working dog is born with more stock knowledge than a lot of people will ever acquire in a lifetime of working with stock. It takes time to learn to work and train a dog but it also takes time and work to be able to pay for wages to a person that is mediocre at best. Often a ranch requires help more at random times for short intervals than on a yearly basis. A dog can fill this role as he is available at a moments notice seven days a week, 24 hours a day. The stock dog has a whole tool box full of knowledge that just needs some work and shaping to become indispensable. They are available, eager, handy and have minimal requirements for their upkeep and living arrangements. They are a resource that involves very little output for the advantages they give. Upcoming fall stockdog clinic will be October 13 and 14, 2018. For more info: contact Carol Nelson @250-772-5315 or text message 250263-4223

A mix of the creative word from Gumbo. A gumbo of gumbo. by John Warcup Morrison There’s no word that you can say but you like to have your way. though an infant son on my knee quite a nuisance you can be, but they say you look like me. Of obedience you’ve no trace, won’t let me wash your face you’ve no good points I can see as stubborn as I can be still they say you look like me. You cry more than laugh bellow like a calf more from temper than from glee of good manners you are free and they say you look like me. You are just a back of trouble,
spitting when blowing bubbles. always jumping like a flea, squirming until I spill tea that’s not like me. A hand-hold on my hear, will wreck me if we part wou may ask “how can that be?” thought I know you won’t agree it’s because you look like me.
If we ran with grace and verve And the rules we did observe; No holding on the straight-away, Nor jostling on the curve Then little matter where we place, if we did our best We can hold our heads up high And know we’ve done our best.
The Race
On the court
When life’s long race is nearly run And the sun sinks west Then may we hold our heads high And know we’ve done our best. To run and win is always nice, but in the race it won’t suffice; It’s how the race is run.
My favorite memories involve a young farmer named Wally. After a couple months of me teaching, he started chasing. Guess I’m an easy catch. We’re married. Taught him.

Renovations/ Days We Played I remember renovations at the Savanna School and how good kids were about playing outside during October, November and December. Minus 35 – there were many days we played touch football in the rain or snow.

Government of Canada secures market access for all British Columbia fresh cherry varieties to Japan The Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, along with Member of Parliament for Kelowna-Lake Country, Stephen Fuhr, announced today that the Government of Canada has secured market access for British Columbia (B.C.) fresh cherries to Japan. In 2017, Japan imported over $62.7 million (CAD) of fresh cherries from around the world.
Once the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for TransPacific Partnership (CPTPP) enters into force, Canadian agriculture and agri-food exports will benefit from preferential access to key Asian markets, including Japan. Through the CPTPP, Japan’s tariffs of 8.5% on fresh cherries will be eliminated over 5 years from entry into force.
Agri-Food.
Building on Canada’s efforts to deepen its trade relationships and commitment to creating new export opportunities, this market access marks a key deliverable from the Minister’s recent trade mission to Japan in March 2018. This is one of many opportunities that will help Canada to reach the target of $75 billion in annual agri-food exports by 2025.
“The Government of Canada is pleased to announce the new market access for British Columbia fresh cherries to Japan. Our Government is committed to seeking market access opportunities across the globe to strengthen our bilateral trade relationships, put more money in the pockets of Canadian farmers, and grow the middle class in Canada,” said the Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and
“The BC Cherry Association is extremely pleased that efforts from government and industry have secured access to the Japanese market for Canadian cherries. Our growers and industry partners look forward to building long-lasting relationships with Japanese customers and cannot wait to see cherries branded with the maple leaf in stores across Japan,” Sukhpaul Bal, President, BC Cherry Association
“Our Government has worked closely with B.C.’s cherry growers to achieve this significant milestone. Selling fresh, high-quality cherries to Japan will help drive economic growth, while creating more job opportunities in British Columbia,” said Stephen Fuhr, Member of Parliament for Kelowna – Lake Country.

Japan was Canada’s third-largest market for agri-food and seafood with exports of $4.5 billion in 2017. Fresh cherry exports to Japan could be worth up to $8 million annually, according to industry experts. The increased access will advance the competitiveness of, and create new opportunities for, the fresh cherry sector. Once the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for TransPacific Partnership enters into force, it will be one of the largest free trade agreements in the world –11 countries representing nearly 500 million people, with a combined GDP of $13.5 trillion, or 13.5% of global GDP.

Government of Canada invests over $12 million to advance innovation and sustainability in Canada’s canola sector Canada’s canola sector is strong and growing. In 2016, Canadian canola seed and oil exports accounted for almost 15 per cent of total agriculture and food exports, valued at $9.2 billion. Canola has also been the largest crop in Canada in terms of market receipts since 2010, and accounts for more than one-fifth of all Canadian cropland. The Government of Canada knows that research and innovation are vital to ensuring Canadian canola farmers have a sustainable and profitable future. While visiting the Bruce D. Campbell Farm & Food Discovery Centre today, Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, announced up to $12.1 million in funding to the Canola Council of
Canada under the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, AgriScience Clusters. Building on the work of two previous clusters, this research investment includes an additional industry contribution of up to $8.1 million. The cluster will focus on advancing the growth and profitability of the sector through innovative and sustainable approaches to creating new and improved products. Activities will include adapting food processing techniques, exploring uses for canola meal in livestock production, examining practices to optimize yields, protect crops from pests, and share lessons learned with stakeholders. The Government of Canada is

also continuing to support new markets for the canola sector. In 2016, Canada reached an agreement to secure canola trade with China, which allows for exports of canola seeds under existing commercial terms until March, 2020. Exports of canola seed to China continue to increase reaching $2.6 billion in 2017. In addition, in June 2018 the Government introduced legislation to implement the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), which will further help to open markets and increase exports. Today’s announcement is part of Minister MacAulay’s “Growing Canadian Agriculture” tour, where he will meet with farmers, processors and industry leaders, and participate in rural agricultural events across the country, to hear ideas on how to capture new growth opportunities for the sector. “We are committed to continue working closely with the canola industry, so that together we can help reach our government’s goal of $75 billion in exports by 2025. The investment we announced today will help keep the sector on the cutting edge so it continues to grow sustainably while contribut-
ing to our economy and supporting well-paying middle class jobs.,” said Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food “Innovation is critical to the growth of the canola industry and this research will help us to contribute to the government’s goal of $75 billion in exports by 2025. Not only that, it will support our strategic plan to ensure the canola industry’s continued growth, demand, stability and success - achieving 52 bushels per acre to meet global market demand of 26 million metric tonnes by 2025,” seconded Jim Everson, President, Canola Council of Canada Canola has been the largest crop in Canada in terms of market receipts since 2010, now accounting for more than one-fifth of all cropland. The Canadian Agricultural Partnership is a five-year, $3 billion investment by federal, provincial and territorial governments to strengthen the agriculture and agri-food sector.

Airdrie Bikes and Bulls go Rumble on the Highway The last weekend of July I headed for Airdrie and the Airdrie Bikes & Bulls, Rumble on the Runway put on by the Alberta Oilmen’s Association. This was to be my second time attending this event, last year’s was held at the rodeo grounds, this year was to be held at the Airdrie Air Park. The AOA had decided that the old rodeo grounds, while an accommodating venue to work with, just wasn’t the location to help the event really take off the way it should and so they negotiated a deal with the Airdrie Airpark. What a great move! While they had lots of little hiccups, the venue itself, being such an open canvas is amazing and will give this event the chance it needs to truly flourish. Adrian Pruden, the event coordinator realized very quickly that they had made the beer gardens too big with no people mover, and yes, it made it tough on people. However, based on the numbers of people who did attend, the beer gardens
are the right size, they just truly require a people mover! And more seating and garbage cans will be needed next year, but truly, for the first time at this venue, well done! Very well done.
but there were one or two folk that needed to be told not to be so aggressive in the way they handled things. The senior management of the security team were incredible folks to work with.
They got around some of the challenges by having waitresses serving at the rodeo event, it made a lot of people happy that they did not have to loose their seats in order to have an adult beverage.
The campsite was enormous, there were light towers with power hook ups everywhere, lots of port o potties, the biggest single challenge - no people movers but this is being remedied for 2019!
The food vendors were camped out in the middle area of the event so no one had too far to walk. The Perogy truck was one of the favourites along with the Porky’s Catering truck. There were vendors selling jewellery, clothing, makeup and all sorts of gadgets too!
On Friday when I arrived I volunteered along with my friend Marnie Thibodeau to hang banners for sponsors, I am not sure either of us knew what we signed up for but four hours later we were done! When the show opened Friday evening, the cowboys and cowgirls took centre stage and my lord they put on a show.
They had a party bus shuttle service that took people to and from various hotels and other locations in Airdrie, to ensure no one had to drink and drive. I used the service extensively and was so grateful for it. I left my motorcycle in town at a friend’s house. They had fantastic security folks on the gates,
I love the silky voice of rodeo announcer Emery Erickson, the man has been working at his trade for decades and he’s damned good at. The kids riding the mini bucking horses stole the show on Friday night!

LETHAL DRUGS ARE out there
Find out how you can save a life. Every day, people are losing their lives to overdoses in BC. These deaths are preventable. Many illegal drugs, including party drugs, have been found to contain deadly fentanyl. And even more toxic carfentanil is now being detected in BC. Not using drugs is the best defence — using alone is the greatest risk. If you use drugs or know someone who does, help is available. Learn about treatment, and where to find naloxone and overdose prevention sites in your area by calling 8-1-1 or visiting www.gov.bc.ca/overdose.

Thank you to: Stojan’s for their assistance with the Quad, Servicemaster for donation of the tickets, Sexsmith Chitaqua Days, Grande Prairie Stompede, Wanham Plowing Match, Rio Grande Rodeo, Rycroft Rodeo, Grovedale Fair, and Wembley Mud Bogs; Sexsmith and Grande Prairie Farmers Markets, South Peace Centennial Museum, Seven Generations Energy, Canadian Tire, Peavey Mart, Keddies Tack and Western Wear, Prairie Mall, Town of Sexsmith, Walmart, Northview Friesen Bros., Horizon Co-op, Real Canadian Superstore, Viterra, Silvertech Contracting Ltd., Sexsmith ATB, Sexsmith Elementary School, Cowbellas, La Glace School, goHealth Wellness, Savon, Factory
Hair, and many individuals and committee members too numerous to mention. Winner of the 2018 Outlander Quad was Nick Manning of Grovedale, and Michael Dembicki from Grande Prairie won the second prize of $1,000.00. Many thanks to all who participated in this successful fundraising venture towards the preservation of our Sexsmith skyscraper, the last remaining grain elevator. The support and appreciation of the Community and surrounding area for this preservation project is nothing short of amazing. We heard many wonderful stories about the elevators while folks purchased their tickets. A fun fact… ‘Not only was Sexsmith once the Grain Capital of the British Empire, but Sexsmith was also the largest port in the Commonwealth!’

Forest Practices Board to audit woodlots near Fort St. John B.C.’s Forest Practices Board will audit five woodlots in the Peace Resource District for forest planning and practices starting next week. The audit begins Sept. 17 and will focus on the forestry activities between September 2016 and September 2018, including road and bridge maintenance, silviculture obligations, and fire protection.
The Peace Resource District was selected at random, the board notes in an information bulletin, and the lots are within a one to two-hour drive of Fort St. John in areas known for ranching and oil and gas development. Two of the woodlots were impacted by the 2016 wildfires. The findings will be compiled in a report, and impacted parties will be given a chance to
respond before a final report and recommendations are publicly released. The Forest Practices Board is B.C.’s independent watchdog of sound forest and range practices. It audits forest and range practices on public land, as well as the appropriateness of government enforcement.

Northern B.C. mayors pen letter against Coastal GasLink challenge Mayors in Northeast B.C. say they are disappointed with an 11th hour effort to stall a key liquefied natural gas pipeline from being built to the west coast. Mayors Lori Ackerman, Dale Bumstead, Rob Fraser, Bill Streeper, Merlin Nichols, Don McPherson and Lorraine Michetti have signed their names to a letter to Michael Sawyer and the West Coast Environmental Law Association, which are challenging the province’s jurisdiction over the Coastal GasLink pipeline. TransCanada’s $4.8-billion pipeline will take natural gas from Northeast B.C. to Kitimat, where it will processed and shipped to Asian markets
through Shell’s LNG Canada project. Both projects have secured regulatory approvals, and a final investment decision on LNG Canada is imminent. Sawyer, however, wants the National Energy Board to determine and issue an order that the pipeline is within federal jurisdiction and subject to the board’s regulation rather than the province of B.C., which earlier approved the pipeline. The mayors say they recognize the right to launch the challenge, but say both projects have been reviewed for years with plenty of opportunity for comment and challenge. “We find it disappointing that your challenge
is being raised at this point in time, when the respective project partners are on the verge of making an investment decision on what could be the single largest private investment in our nation’s history; an investment decision that could deliver an abundance of benefits to so many people in our communities, region, province, and across our entire nation,” the mayors write. “We stand united in our support for seeing the development of LNG Canada, and we will continue to voice our support for this project.” The mayors of Burns Lake, Mackenzie, New Hazelton, Terrace, Houston, Vanderhoof, and Kitimat also signed the letter.
