Breakfast Brief FARMLEAD’S OUTLOOK FOR 2019 GRAIN MARKETS, PRICES (January 7, 2019) Grain markets are mixed as we start the first full week of the 2019 calendar year of trading with a U.S. government shutdown and trade war discussions ongoing. In a shortened trading week, last week, grain markets were able to rebound after a poor showing over the Christmas-holiday week to end the 2018 calendar year. If you haven’t yet read our 2018 recap of grain prices, check it out! Wheat prices are facing some headwinds as the Argentine harvest wraps up, with 91% of the crop now harvested. It’s estimated that about 14 MMT of the forecasting 18.7 MMT Argentine wheat harvest will be exported, with the Rosario Board of Trade suggesting that already 6 MMT of these exports have been contracted. There were some rains over the holidays that likely had a negative impact on quality so I’m a bit cautious of the competition for higher protein, something I maintain a bullish stance on for wheat prices in 2019. Grain Markets Amidst a Trade War As discussed in that recap of 2018 grain prices, no single factor had a bigger impact on grain markets this past year than the trade war between the U.S. and China. Looking forward, there are less than 60 days left in the truce between Beijing and D.C. for implementing more import tariffs. U.S. President Trump continues to tweet out optimism for a deal being found but the deal likely has to include concessions from China on things like trade imbalances and intellectual property abuse. Will they do it though? As long as there is the distance on the table between the two sides, it’s likely that grain markets will assume that a deal to end the trade war won’t get done. And if that’s the case, then projections for U.S. soybean exports likely have to fall from current levels. Through mid-December (or Week 15 of the 2018/19 crop year), U.S. soybean exports (not sales, but actual shipments) are tracking 40% behind last year’s pace. However, as you can tell from the table below, the decline is completely attributed to China not being a buyer this year. Since China doesn’t buy a lot of soybeans from America in the first half of the calendar year (instead buying from South America), even if the trade war ends, it’s unlikely that the pace of U.S. soybean exports will accelerate to significantly to meet the full-year target from the USDA. In fact, there has been some buzz that China has been buying boats of soybeans from Brazil for May-June delivery as a hedge against trade talks falling apart in Beijing this week. Staying in China, African swine fever continues to spread and there are concerns that Beijing is not in front of the situation (or, at least not sharing information) after a dead pig washed up on a beach in Taiwain. In the past 5 months, about 100 cases of the disease across 23 Chinese provinces have been confirmed. While there is concern of the disease spreading across the country’s most popular meat, the industry is about 700 million animals strong and it has a long ways to go before likely putting too much of a dent in demand. Grain Markets Waiting for Data As a part of the U.S. government shutdown, the USDA has decided that they won’t release their monthly reports that were slated for publication on Friday, January 11th, 2019. This includes the ultra-important January WASDE, quarterly grain stocks, and winter wheat seeding reports. Once the government is again funded, the USDA will give an update timeline as to when grain markets can expect fresh data. Much like soybeans, I’m expecting the USDA to update their forecast for corn exports, albeit to the upside (versus to the downside for soybean exports). Through Week 15 of the 2018/19 U.S. corn crop year, exports are tracking 76% higher year-over-year! Considering that American corn is the cheapest in the world, this is a positive, slightly-bullish table. But the market is also thinking about more corn acres planted in 2019. Currently, we’re expecting the area planted with U.S. corn in 2019 will jump up above 93.5 million acres. On that note, Informa is estimating 2019 U.S. winter wheat seeded area at 31.513 million acres. This would be a 3.1% decline from 2018’s 32.535 million acres. Also coming from Informa was estimates for soybean production in South America. For Brazil, the firm is estimating 122 MMT (matching the USDA’s estimate), while calling for 56.5 MMT of production in Argentina (1 MMT more than the USDA). Of note for Brazil is some dryness carrying over from December into January, especially southern Brazil. Those beans that were planted super early (and, thus, expected to be harvested early) likely will see below-average yields in the combine. Thus, the question is where or not Brazil can top 120 MMT in production. My gut today says they won’t, but the market is pricing this possibility in as well. Watching Cycles of Grain Markets One of the things we should definitely be aware of for 2019 grain markets are the usually cyclical patterns. For example, in 5 of the last 6 years, the highs in corn prices have been found between mid-May and mid-July. The exact moment that high occurs is certainly a condition of Mother Nature’s provision of good or bad growing conditions. If we take the calendar year a bit further, we know that the best corn prices aren’t usually seen during harvest time. More specifically, September and October aren’t usually the best times to be contracting, but rather that’s when you should be trying to deliver on contracts made during the previous months. This isn’t just specific to corn prices. It’s a very similar situation for canola prices and wheat prices, or others that have a futures board where outside speculators have an influence. Ultimately, if you see the market starting to push higher in early-to-mid-May, then you should be selling into that strength! Can Monetary Policy Influence Grain Markets? One of the biggest factors often overlooked in grain markets is the macroeconomic influence of monetary policy. This is the strategy implemented by a central bank – namely the U.S. Federal Reserve – to help maintain stability in markets by “influencing the amount of money and credit in the U.S. economy”. For 2018, this monetary policy in the U.S. and Canada was marked by several interest rate increases. Going forward into 2019, most economists agreed that the Federal Reserve’s – or “the Fed” as they’re commonly known – must avoid a recession by keeping inflation in check while allowing for modest growth. That being said, there are a lot of factors suggesting the U.S. economy is tracking well to start 2019, bond yields and stock markets are suggesting a higher risk of continued to depressed growth. This is especially true as other international economies have slowed. On this note, the Wall Street Journal recently reported the at a major economic conference held in Atlanta, “a widely held view was that a deceleration in growth is inevitable thanks to rising global threats, Washington’s instability, and a fading boost from the tax cuts.” If you start to see economic growth slowing, then it’s very likely that the likes of the Fed and the Bank of Canada won’t continue their trend of increasing interest rates. That being said, if they do ignore some of the bond and stock market indicators, and interest rates continue to rise, the impact on farmers is notable. More specifically, it might be worth looking at changing some of your variable rate financial products to a fixed rate.

Will 2019 Grain Markets Flop or Fly? Ultimately, grain markets in 2019 will largely be a function of the usual players: acres planted and Mother Nature. The newest variable though – a trade war and/or protectionist policies – will have more of say, especially to start the new year. Throughout this week, we’ll be digging into the outlooks for various crops in 2019 so stay tuned to the FarmLead Insights page! All prices are in Canadian dollars per metric tonne Market Comments - Major feed grain values have firmed a little across the prairies while the proteins – DDGS, soybean meal, and canola meal have all moved upwards in part due to weakening of the Canadian dollar. Peas have remained at strengthened values – $270-275 – across the prairies as these prices have been supported by elevator bids. In Manitoba, bids have touched as high as $292.* Models have been updated to reflect the latest nutrient compositions of feed ingredients, which is done periodically. “Feed Pea / Faba Bean Benchmark - The feed pea/faba bean feed benchmarks are intended to be used as a pricing reference. This benchmark provides a consistent and unbiased estimate of the feeding value of peas and low tannin faba beans in the three regions shown. Feed peas and faba beans will trade at various differentials to the benchmark based on local supply/ demand, quality differences and other contract terms. “Feed Pea / Faba Bean Feed Benchmark Calculation - The feed pea/ faba bean feed benchmarks are an estimate of the feeding value of dry peas/ low tannin faba beans in Western Canada, based on the value of competing feed ingredients in swine rations. Bi-weekly, tradable prices for the major feed ingredients are collected for the three regions shown above. These prices are then entered into a least cost feed formulation that is typical for growerfinisher swine in Western Canada. A feeding value is then derived for feed peas/faba beans based on their nutritional characteristics and the prices of the competing feed ingredients. The least cost feed formulation was developed in consultation with the Prairie Swine Centre. In addition to the feed ingredients shown above, the feed formulation also includes canola oil, synthetic lysine, synthetic methionine, synthetic threonine, synthetic tryptophan, mono-dicalcium phosphate, limestone, salt, vitamins and minerals.

New web portal to help Canadians adapt to climate change Climate information—including timely, accurate and trusted weather information—is critical for decisions related to agricultural production. Farmers and ranchers now have access to more decisionmaking tools through a new web portal launched by the Government of Canada in October 2018. These resources will help farmers take full advantage of opportunities and

reduce risks. Aimed at helping Canadians understand and adapt to climate change, the Canadian Centre for Climate Services offers one-stop access to a variety of climate data, information and tools. Features include a climate library, a climate science hub, a data download section and a new climate services

support desk to help users with their climate data questions. The centre also offers training and support for individuals who want to address local climate-related risks. “The climate services website and support desk are good complements to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC)’s agroclimate website pages, like Drought Watch,” explains Patrick Cherneski, manager of AAFC’s National Agroclimate Information Service. “For more than 20 years, AAFC has been providing farmers and decision-makers with agroclimate

data, information and tools. Agroclimate conditions maps, drought assessments, soil-moisture monitoring, impact reporting, risk management, and climate change scenarios all help in making agricultural decisions,” said Cherneski. “The new portal is more broad. It’s an all-government approach that houses a wider variety of sources and sectors, for all Canadians,” he added. To learn more about the new portal and how it aims to help Canadians understand and adapt to climate change, visit the Canadian Centre for Climate Services.

The supple & rounded horse - part two By Glenn Stewart Last month I spoke of what I think supple and rounded is: a horse that is mentally, emotionally and physically balanced. Suppleness comes before roundness in the order of preparation. The suppleness is soft, bendable and maneuverable. The roundness is a way a horse carries itself, a shape and muscling developed over time. Everything we do from day one and everyday on the ground or on their back should be working towards becoming more supple and round, and that there is a multitude of exercises or things to do and look for to help a horse become this way. I’ve have been very fortunate to have ridden and worked with many horses across Canada, United States, Mexico and Brazil. At a quick count, 25 different horse breeds that I can remember. On one occasion I rode 30 stallions the day I arrived at a very fancy breeding and training facility. They kept bringing them, and I kept riding them. I was like a little kid in a candy store. The horses ranged in price from $30,000 to $120,000. They were all rode in English tack and most with a double bridle, two bits and four reins. The horses were all led in to me one at a time, because the horses were doing most of the leading. When I got on to ride the head trainer kept saying, “More contact, more contact!” Now I’m not little, and the horse had two bits in his mouth and as far as I was concerned, I already had way too much contact. It felt like I had both feet in the radiator trying to pull the steering wheel off. The horses had been rode a long time in a way that was trying to pull them into a

frame, super athletic horses with no mental or emotional preparation for the physical look they were aiming for. I tried to sit on one of the stallions with a loose rein and give him a rub. That ended in the horse being so completely lost about the unusual occurrence of a loose rein and a rub that it spun around every which way, tangled its feet and fell over with me on it. It happened in seconds and I found out real quick that I had 30 stallions that needed a lot of help. (I might mention, it was over 40 degrees Celsius and 100 percent humidity. The only English words the locals knew was ‘more contact’ and ‘tranquil’ but neither word seemed to match in any way was going on or needed. The goal of the training facility was trying to develop round and supple horses, but two very big ingredients were being missed. It was a very big adventure. Supple and round starts on the ground, some very easy things to look for is how soft, bendable and maneuverable your horse is. When a person leads their horse, the horse should stay with them not ahead or behind, at a walk, trot or canter on a loose line connected to the handler not the rope, in case one day I have this horse at Liberty with no rope at all. In the meantime I have a snap or clip on the end of my lead line that clips to the halter. When I ask my horse to do something such as lead, circle, side pass, change direction at any gait, my goal would be to have them do the maneuver with the clip hanging straight down and a ‘belly’ or float in the rope. In other words there is no tension on the lead. For example, when I circle a horse the clip hangs straight down

and the horse is bent towards me. Also I would like the horse to circle while I stand still and it travels around me at a walk, trot or canter whatever gait I’ve asked for. If the head is high and away from me, the rope is tight, the clip is pulled parallel to the ground, then it is easy to see there is tension on the rope and in the horse. He is learning to be tight, braced and is not learning how to carry himself and hold a circle. He is not soft and relaxed, would be developing the wrong kind of muscling and a long way from supple and round. A horse that carries himself moves dramatically different and much more beautifully than one that is carried by us and our equipment. Many horses on the ground and in the saddle are asked to change direction and do it with a stiff and braced neck. For example, when the lead line or rein is picked up to ask for a change of direction the feet turn but the head and neck stay stiff and braced. The horse has changed direction but did it without being soft and supple. One of the sayings I like to keep in my mind and use is softness before, during, and after the maneuver. Which then I guess we could say the horse must have been supple for that maneuver. The lead line or rein is connected to the head, which is attached to the neck of the horse so if there is suppleness the head and neck should yield softly bending in the direction of change and then the feet will follow if asked. When leading a horse, again, the lead line should be loose - clip hanging down and the horse matching my pace, fast or slow at either of my shoulders or behind, wherever I have chosen him to be. A horse that comes with you or does these exercises in this manner is in a much better mental and

emotional state to be supple. The opposite of this picture is the handler hanging on tightly to the clip and the horse dragging the handler along for the ride or the horse dragging along behind or out to the side going wherever it wants. When I’m out enjoying all the many horses, I keep in mind the exercises and time spent needs to done in a way that is developing understanding and confidence. I have to notice where the clip is; if the head and neck is bent softly in the direction asked, is the horse carrying itself or is it me and my equipment. For me, supple and round starts on the ground and carries into the riding, not one or the other. Straight from the horse’s mouth – equine dentistry Written by Dr. Zoe Ross Most horse owners are aware that horses need regular dental care. Horses have hypsodont teeth which means they continue to erupt throughout the horse’s life. Horses are herbivores and the chewing of grass and hay wear the teeth at the sites where the teeth contact each other. The upper arcade (teeth in the top jaw) sit slightly wider than the lower arcade (teeth in the lower jaw) which means as the teeth wear down, sharp points can form on the outsides of the upper teeth and insides of the lower teeth. These sharp points can irritate the gums and tongue of the animal and this can be quite painful. Sharp points can result in problems with eating as well as performance problems. A procedure called “floating” can be performed where these sharp points are removed to improve the comfort of our equine companions and athletes. There are many other serious problems that can occur in horse’s mouths including but not limited to abnormal eruption of teeth, retained caps (baby teeth), abscessed or broken teeth. Horses can also have soft tissue problems in their mouths such as abscesses where foxtails have become lodged in their gums or perhaps a stick has become wedged between their teeth. How often a horse needs dental care will depend on their age, underlying pathology, feed type and what level of performance is required of them. Young horses may require more frequent dental care as they lose their baby teeth and their adult teeth erupt and come into wear. Equine dentistry can be performed by a doctor of veterinary medicine or by “lay” dentists. It is my opinion that a veterinarian who has an interest in equine dentistry, participates in continuing education on equine dentistry and who has experience in this area, is the most qualified person to be providing this care. There are several reasons for this. The first reason is that veterinarians have had a minimum of 6 years of university and have had very thorough training in all areas of animal health including anatomy, physiology, radiology, surgery, anesthesiology and pharmacology. With this training we understand the body as a whole and how each part of it affects other parts of it. Most mixed animal or equine practitioners offering performance floating are very well

versed in disease conditions that may affect the mouth and often do extra certification training in equine dentistry. Definitely take the time to discuss this with your veterinarian and ask them what training they have received and if they have an interest in the area of equine dentistry. In contrast there is a very wide variety of training programs for equine dentists ranging from programs that are just a few weeks to much more intensive programs. Some of these programs are excellent and others are very basic. If you are using an equine dentist, please take the time to look into the training they have taken. The second reason is that veterinary medicine is a regulated profession. This means that we have to have a license to practice, we have a requirement to participate in continuing education and we are monitored by our regulatory bodies. If veterinarians fail to provide appropriate medical care to a patient there can be a disciplinary hearing and action taken against them. Find out if your equine dentist has to participate in continuing education or if there is a regulatory body that can take away their license to practice if they malpractice. The third reason is that veterinarians also have pharmaceutical and anesthesia training and can legally administer sedation or anesthesia to patients. Depending upon the extent of the abnormalities in your horse’s mouth, dentistry can be an uncomfortable procedure. Sedation combined with pain management, can help make treatment less stressful and less painful for the horse. It can also allow for a safer and a more thorough oral examination and treatment to be performed in those animals that aren’t overly cooperative. In cases where there is gingival inflammation, fractured teeth or tooth abscesses, veterinarians also often administer local nerve blocks and other forms of pain control as needed. Veterinarians use a variety of information when deciding on appropriate sedation or anesthesia for our patients and consider other disease processes, the age of the animal, the temperament of the animal and the degree of dental pathology. Most procedures are complication free done with sedation, sedation is metabolized quickly with each routine dental lasting less than an hour. Combinations of different sedatives or anesthetics can be used to provide a balanced and safe level of pain management and relaxation for the patient. Veterinarians can also take and interpret dental radiographs to evaluate for underlying pathology or abnormalities in a horse’s mouth. Sometimes there may be un- erupted teeth, abscesses around the roots, sinus abnormalities or boney malformations present which contribute to dental problems. There are some excellent equine dentists who have taken extensive training, work closely with veterinarians when sedation, radiographs or advanced procedures are necessary and have lots of experience. However there are some who call themselves “equine dentists” who have none of the above and with inappropriate use of power tools, Committed to friendly, quality care these individuals can cause extensive damage to horse’s mouths which can cause them to be in extreme pain. In many cases this damage can be irreversible. Mixed red meat outlook for 2019

Canadian beef and hog producers benefited from a robust demand for red meats in 2018 in terms of trade, yet prices were quite variable as result of growing supply and trade tensions. Industry experts say the continuation of strong demand – both domestically and abroad – means 2019 might bring profitability. Canadian beef producers should benefit from

continued strong domestic and foreign demand into 2019. In the event of a global economic downturn and continued trade disputes involving the United States, however, the positive outlook could be dampened. Porcine profitability Tyler Fulton, director of risk management with Hams Marketing Services in Winnipeg, says Canadian hog farmers are generally well positioned to have a profitable year, though trade questions create uncertainty. Optimistically, Fulton says, trade issues between the United States, Mexico and China could be resolved. The subsequent opening of Chinese markets to North American pork would allow Canadian producers to fill the supply gap created by African swine fever, a serious porcine disease currently menacing China’s hog sector. J.P. Gervais, vice-president and chief agricultural economist for Farm Credit Canada, says the true impact of African swine fever remains elusive. If China loses even one per cent of its herd, Gervais says, the country will need to import 33 per cent more pork to match the shortfall. This would work in Canada’s favour, though a slowing of China’s economy – or the global economy in general – could reduce its purchasing power. Conversely, the growth in hog exports to other Asian markets under Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, and an expectation for the Canadian dollar to average US$0.75, are good news. As with the hog sector, Brian Perillat, manager and senior analyst with Canfax, says beef producers, and specifically beef producers in Western Canada, are positioned to make good profits in the coming year. This is particularly true given strong, ongoing demand in domestic as well as export markets. Because recent years have seen good prices and relative market stability, though, Perillat says Canada and the United States are entering 2019 with substantial supplies of beef cattle. This makes international trade critical. Record volumes of beef, however, are already being exported – and that’s just within Canada’s usual export markets. Trade deals like the CPTPP have yet to come into effect. “We haven’t really seen the impact. There’s opportunity to grow,” Perillat says. Strong ongoing domestic and international demand for Canadian beef products is good news for the country’s cattle producers for the year ahead. Meanwhile, ongoing global trade issues could give Canadian hog producers the opportunity to fill demand gaps in 2019. Matt McIntosh

Trade deals aim to diversify Canada’s agricultural trade

“Free trade agreements such as CETA, CUSMA and the CPTPP encourage investment, open up massive new markets around the world and help our hard-working farmers and food processors compete globally,” said Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Lawrence MacAulay.

The successful conclusion of the CUSMA negotiations marked many months of hard work by trade negotiators. The new agreement gives Canadian workers, farmers, ranchers and businesses a high-standard trade agreement that will result in freer markets, fairer trade and robust economic growth for Canada. The CPTPP is a major trading bloc, comprising 11 countries that represent close to 500 million people and a combined gross domestic product (GDP) of $13.5 trillion. Once the agreement has entered into force for all parties, producers of more than three-quarters of Canada’s agriculture and agri-food products will benefit from immediate duty-free access to all member

states. These agreements—as well as the Comprehensive and Economic Trade Agreement (CETA)—make Canada the only G7 nation with free trade access to the Americas, Europe and Asia–Pacific. The federal government is also committed to developing strategies to support farmers and processors to help them adjust to impacts resulting from the CUSMA and the CPTPP. Working groups have been created and will help farmers and processors adjust to trade agreements.

R0011652401

Trade deals are a top priority for the Government of Canada, as Canada seeks to open new markets around the world. The Canada– United States–Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) is now complete and the recent ratification of the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) means that Canada was among the first six parties to enjoy the benefits of the agreement when it came into force on December 30, 2018.
