Hazel Tofteland 1933 ~ 2019

Your

Northern Horizon

With sad hearts we say goodbye to Hazel Tofteland, a lifelong resident of Valhalla Centre, Alberta. Hazel passed away with family by her side on Wednesday, May 22, 2019 in the Beaverlodge Hospital at the age of 86 years.

Team

Hazel Roberta was the first of four children born at Poplar Hill, Alberta to Norwegian immigrant parents, Harold and Ruth Olderskog.

Dan PRZYBYLSKI Sales Manager 250-782-4888 ext 114 (office) 250-784-4319 (cell) horizon@dcdn.ca

In 1956 Hazel married Steve, her husband of 63 years. In 1960 they bought land in the Valhalla area, a half mile from where Steve was raised. This is where they built their lives and raised five children. In the mid 1960s, Double A Stock Farm was established after purchasing their first registered Black Angus and Arabian horses. This was the beginning of what became years of both Horse and Beef 4H, Fairs, cattle shows and bull sales.

Janis KMET BC Sales 250-782-4888 ext 104 (office) 250-219-0369 (cell) jkmet@dcdn.ca

Hazel was involved with every aspect of the farm. A good cook, in which no one went unfed, a big garden for canning and freezing, butchering chickens, washing animals in show preparation, to driving grain truck or tractor when needed. As with most farm wives, hard work didn’t phase her.

Margot OWENS Classifieds & Circulation 250-782-4888 ext 113 classifieds@dcdn.ca circulation@dcdn.ca

Hazel was raised in a very musical family. Even though she never read music it was amazing how she could pick up any instrument and play it just by ear. This love of music found them at many gospel and old time country music festivals throughout the Peace Country.

Lisa GIESINGER Accounting Unit 201, 1777 - 3rd Avenue Prince George, BC V2L 3G7 Ph. 250-960-2771 lsmith@glaciermedia.ca

Hazel had a lot of creative talents. She enjoyed oil painting and she especially loved to sew. Many people have benefited from her love of quilting. Hazel’s biggest love though was that for her family. Their care and well being was her number one priority and her grand and great grandkids were her pride and joy.

U.S. PLANT 2019 OFFICIALLY THE WORST EVER (May 31, FarmLead.com) Grain prices this morning are in the red this morning as traders take month-end profits off the board, despite Plant 2019 for corn and soybeans far from complete. Put simply, all those traders who were once short (read: bearish) corn and soybean prices, have now exited those positions, and those who bought on the way up have also exited this position. Ultimately, this brings us back to a bit of a standstill. Worth noting is that canola prices have seen a nice rally this week on a weaker Canadian Dollar and the emerging drought in Western Canada. Thus, their pullback this morning isn’t as significant as the rest of the complex. On the geopolitical front, President Trump has threatened to put a 5% tariff on all goods coming in from Mexico with incremental increases to that percentage if the flow of illegal immigrants from Mexico into the U.S. doesn’t slow. Although the Mexican President has suggested that they will not retaliate, this potentially opens the door for Mexico to stop buying corn from the U.S. and instead look to other options. The most logical would be Brazil, where a record second-crop/safrinha corn harvest is taking place. In this vein, total U.S. corn exports seem to be slowing down as through Week 37 of the 2018/19 crop year, 37.88 MMT of corn has been shipped out, 6.2% above the pace from last year. Similarly, China is expected to slow its buying of U.S. soybeans until the U.S. slows its tariff escalation. Plant 2019 the Slowest for Corn Ever Scott Irwin from the University of Illinois continues to put out some great insights and visual perspective on the state of Plant 2019 in the U.S. this year. On Wednesday, Mr. Irwin noted that “over the last 40 years, previous worst late planting years were 1993, 1995, & 1996. Plant 2019 progress as of Sunday was 29% behind 1993, 13% behind 1995, and 20% behind 96!!” Further, he goes on to say that to help try to get a handle on where corn prices can rally to, it’s important to ask the question of “what corn planting Mother Nature is going to allow in the next two weeks” for Plant 2019. Given the amount of surplus moisture in the U.S. Corn Belt, this is an unprecedented situation. Literally, we don’t have any data or historical references that compare to what we’re seeing this year in Plant 2019. What we do know is that, with the rains this week, and the moisture in the forecast for next week, planting prospects have worsened in most areas. Accordingly, Mr. Irwin posits that up to one -third (or 31 million acres) of American corn acres will NOT be planted by Sunday, June 2nd. Right now, a Bloomberg survey suggests that traders are currently expecting at least 6 million acres of corn not to get planted, and instead will see Prevent Plant insurance claims made. Given the wet weather, I would have to agree with Mr. Irwin that 6 million acres of corn going into Prevent Plant might be on the low side of things, and echoing what I said this past Wednesday’s FarmLead Breakfast Brief, there is likely more room to the rally in corn prices. On that note, the International Grains Council just cut their outlook for the global 2019/20 corn harvest, due to a worse outlook in the United States. The IGC dropped its estimate for total world production by 7 MMT (or 275.6 million bushels if converting metric tonnes into bushels) to now sit at 1.118 billion metric tonnes. QT Weather notes that the weather over the next week will continue to be wet not only across the Corn Belt to continue to stall Plant 2019, but also the U.S. Southern Plains where they’re just trying to get the winter wheat harvest started. Accordingly, this will likely support wheat prices a bit more, something I mentioned a week ago. Has Plant 2019 Affected Grain Exports? The wet weather across America’s Heartland has also slowed down the ability of grain to move throughout the United States, namely through the river systems. According to the U.S. Wheat Associates, this has helped demand for U.S. hard red winter wheat exports a bit, as sales have been increasing over the last few weeks. The demand is there too, as we know competing countries from the Black Sea are slowing down their shipments. The Agriculture Ministry in Ukraine said this week that total grain exports are tracking nearly 27%, or 10 MMT more than this time a year ago. Comparably, in Russia, there’s seemingly no let-up in their grain exports, especially wheat shipments are only finally slowing down, albeit the second-largest wheat harvest ever is expected to start up soon. SovEcon estimates that winter wheat acres in Russia this year are at a record high of 38.8 million, which would produce an 83.4 MMT crop (the record was set in 2017/18 at 85 MMT), while they think that Ukraine is expected to bring in a record 28.1 MMT wheat harvest. Elsewhere, grain ports in the ultra-important Argentina city of Rosario have shut down, putting grain exports there at a standstill. The country is entering a recession and the nationwide strike by workers at ports, airports, and other locations is in protest of the austerity measures being implemented by President Mauricio Macri. On the other side of the equator, workers at the Port of Vancouver (the Canadian one) have been locked out as part of a labour dispute over technology changes, namely automation potentially killing off jobs. This could potentially grind Canadian grain exports to a halt, and at a time when the opportunity to ship is probably greatest (except for maybe canola!). In fact, Canadian non-durum wheat exports are certainly on track for a new record, as through week 43 of its 2018/19 crop year, 15.24 MMT has been shipped out, 14% above last year’s pace. Ultimately, traders will continue to watch any updated weather maps with a very close eye. At this point, the market is likely to get long on wheat and corn prices, but geopolitical entanglements are slowing the gains in soybean and canola prices. That said, with this extra moisture falling on top of the already-soaked U.S. Midwest, traders are likely to have a bias towards getting long the market.

BC High School Rodeo Junior championships After two wild months of spring rodeos, the North Region riders were in Barriere this weekend, May 18 to 20, for the 2019 B.C. High School Rodeo Junior Championships. Among those hoping to win a provincial title, and qualify for the Canadian Finals, were Dawson Creek athletes Twiggy Esau and Danny Jones. Esau, Grade 8, was the defending B.C. pole bending champion, and is once again showing she’s one of the best in the province in the event. She leads the North Region with 101 points, four more than Kerri Moat of Farmington, who will also be attending provincials. “I’m very excited to be back at provincials for the third time. I’m going to do good in all my events, try my hardest, and keep moving forward,” said Esau. Esau is also second in the girls all around and is the barrel race leader heading into provincials. However, winning barrels this spring hasn’t been easy, as Esau’s barrel horse Time To Shine passed away in March. “It’s been hard, but thanks to Moat Farms letting me use one of

their horses, I’ve still managed to be in the lead,” Esau said. Jones, Grade 7, had a great first season a year ago, and was named the B.C. Rookie of the Year. This year, he’s progressed at a rate of someone much more experienced. He’s third in the boys all around, but was named the All Around Cowboy on May 5 at the Williams Lake Rodeo. This year, he’s leading the North Region in saddle bronc, and is third in both boys breakaway roping and chute dogging, and has improved as both a roper and steer wrestler this year. “I have way more points this year, and qualified for provincials in all my events but one. I’d really like to win a Provincial All Around buckle, and qualify for the Canadian Finals,” said Jones. Both Esau and Jones are thankful to their family, friends, and the volunteers for helping them be the best they can, on their quest for a provincial rodeo title. Below are the top three North Region riders from the first day of the three day rodeo. For full results and the 2019 Junior Provincial Champions, go to dawsoncreekmirror.ca.

Tummy troubles: bloat and gastric dilatation volvulus in dogs Written by Dr. Zoe Ross

Bloat and Gastric Dilatation Volvulus (GDV) is a very serious emergency in dogs and requires immediate veterinary care. This is a condition where the stomach fills with gas and then rotates on itself. It is most common in large deep chested dogs. Breeds such as Great Danes, Weimaraners, Irish Setter, Gordon Setter, Standard Poodles Basset Hounds and St Bernards are high risk but it can occur in any breed. It most often occurs in older dogs. This condition typically occurs when a dog eats or drinks rapidly and then exercises but can occur at any time. High stress, anxiety and only feeding one large

meal a day can all contribute to the occurrence of this condition. When the stomach fills with gas and then twists, it is an emergency because the blood circulation to the stomach is severely compromised. Also as the stomach continues to fill with gas and fluid, it can press on the diaphragm and large vessels in the abdomen causing shock and collapse. Dogs will typically show signs of discomfort and distress. Their abdomen often appears enlarged or bloated. They will often drool and may show signs of non-productive vomiting or gagging. They will be restless and uncomfortable. Veterinarians will assess the

patient and often radiographs are taken to evaluate the stomach and to confirm the diagnosis. Because the patient is often in a state of shock intravenous fluids are started and if the stomach is very dilated, the gas may have to be relieved as the patient is prepped for surgery. Surgery has to be done to remove the gas from the stomach and untwist it. In severe cases, because the blood supply has been compromised to the stomach wall, part of the stomach may have to be removed. Sometimes the spleen is also severely damaged from the compromised blood supply and has to be removed as well. After the stomach has been manipulated back into its normal position, a procedure called a gastropexy is performed to tack the stomach to the muscles of the abdominal wall so it can’t twist again. Patients require very intensive monitoring during and after the surgery because they can develop cardiac arrhythmias and are usually quite shocky. In some cases, especially in those high risk breeds, veterinarians may recommend a preventative gastropexy be performed at the time a pet is spayed or neutered. This involves tacking the stomach to the muscles of the abdominal wall. This won’t prevent bloat (the filling of the stomach with gas) but most of the time will prevent the stomach from twisting on itself. Feeding several (at least 2) meals a day and not allowing your dog to exercise excessively immediately after eating or drinking will also be beneficial.

Yes, Alberta is open for business. roposed changes to labour rules will help get the province’s economy back on track. Alberta would return to previous general holiday pay and banked overtime rules, and restore democracy and balance to workplaces, if the legislation is passed. In addition to the changes proposed in Bill 2, government will introduce a $13/hour minimum wage for students under 18. “Our government ran on a promise to get Albertans, especially young people, back to work. The previous government’s changes to employment rules went too far, too fast. With Bill 2 and the youth minimum wage, we are restoring fairness and balance to the workplace and getting ‘Help Wanted’ signs back in the windows of Alberta businesses,” said Jason Kenney, Premier The proposed Open for Business Act would reduce unfair burdens on businesses and give workers more rights in unionized workplaces. Recent changes to employment rules, such as requiring employers to provide holiday pay even if they are not open that day, created an unfair cost burden on job creators. Proposed changes to union rules would improve balance and enhance freedoms by returning to secret ballots. Government is also taking action to address the youth unemployment crisis. Nearly 11 per cent of Albertans aged 15-24 are unemployed, compared to the provincial rate of 6.9 per cent. Employers have cited the current $15/hour minimum wage as one of the reasons they have reduced opportunities for young workers. The new youth job creation wage of $13 per hour will apply to students aged 13-17. It will take effect June 26, 2019. “We need to encourage employers to create opportunities for all workers. These changes would help Alberta’s businesses to do just that. We’re bringing back balance, cutting red tape and making it more affordable to hire teens for their first jobs. We are also keeping some of the recent changes that make sense, such as those that provided for compassionate leave and enhanced workers’ rights,” added Jason Copping, Minister of Labour “Alberta’s minimum wage increases and new holiday pay requirements added operational costs that were too much, too fast, and came at exactly the wrong time for our industry. These

new rules for holiday pay and banked overtime, as well as the new minimum wage for young workers, will provide much-needed relief for restaurateurs so that they can continue contributing to vibrant communities and providing first-time job opportunities for youth,” piped up Mark von Schellwitz, vice-president, Western Canada, Restaurants Canada

The Northern Horizon, June 7, 2019

21

If passed, changes to holiday pay rules, overtime, and Flexible Averaging Agreements would take effect on Sept. 1, 2019 to give employers time to adjust. If passed, changes affecting unions would take effect when Bill 2 receives royal assent or when regulations are completed.

Travel delays for Hwy. 40 Motorists travelling Highway 40, south of Grande Prairie, can expect travel delays due to highway construction during summer 2019. New passing lanes are being constructed on Highway 40 about 38 kilometres south of Grande Prairie, between Bald Mountain Creek and Hammerhead Road. Construction includes several intersection improvements, shoulder-widening and pavement overlay. Motorists can expect periodic lane closures during paving operations. Speed limits will be reduced

to 80 kilometres per hour in most work zones, and to 50 kilometres per hour in areas where passing lanes and intersection upgrades are being constructed. The Highway 40 construction work and related traffic impacts are expected to continue periodically until fall of 2020.For up-todate road information and traffic delays Call: 511 toll-free Outside Alberta: 1-855-391-9743 Visit: 511.alberta.ca Follow: @511Alberta

SHEPHERD’S DIARY

by Andy Tschetter

Follow along with the Shepherd’s Diary

(Andy Tschetter is in charge of the sheep operation at the Peace View Hutterite Colony and provides a diary account of wintertime experiences with the sheep, as well as highlights from the past years travels in the Peace region.) FEBRUARY 12 Rambouillet sheep reign supreme at Tatton Lake Ranch near 100 Mile House, where Jacob and I stopped to catch up with old friends Klaus and Angelika Blanck, who raise purebred sheep here in the fairly wooded region of the Cariboo where the coffee is splendid and the homecooked food may well be the finest in the district courtesy of Mrs. Blanck! The farm is tucked into the sidehill northeast of town surrounded by magnificent groves of pine and spruce trees, with the lake shimmering below. Literally the ‘Bavaria’ of Canada! The elderly German couple chose to raise the dual purpose breed citing the large and strong boned carcasses of the lambs that give good yield in trimmed meat cuts as well as good wool production. Fetching a premium, the fleeces are less oily that that of Merino, shrinking less. Taking note from previous visits to the farm, of the remarkable strength and resilience of these particular Rambouillet ewes who show relatively strong resistance to internal parasites, the result of over twenty years of careful breeding and selecting for body conformation and size created for the Blancks amazingly deep bodied ewes! Unusual in many respects given the tradi

tional lankiness and angularity of the breed! We returned numerous times to buy ram lambs from here as breeding stock to bring back to the Peace Country to add size and wool quality to our own flocks. The sheep lamb in March and later retire to summer pasture in early June while the newly weaned lambs stay in the barn to be grain finished on barley and alfalfa hay. In the fall when pastures fade, Klaus lets the sheep out to graze the cutblocks adjacent the ranch. A team of 5 Maremma guard dogs accompany the ewes out and see them home again before nightfall. The posse of canine police is led by ‘Joe’, a huge Anatolian Shepherd-cross who is the ‘King of the Valley’ according to Blanck. FEBRUARY 13 I was always intrigued with the plump Suffolk and Dorset cross ewes at Cool Creek Farm north of the Sweetwater Road. East of Farmington. Tucked into the crest of the hill, with neat sprucelined paddocks on the slope, the ovine populace here a seemingly happy bunch, who, on most visits to the farm appear content and well fed. In summer months the ewes can be seen at pasture with the years late May born lambs running and frolicking in the sun. Or the rain, or autumn cool as my periodic visits to Coal Creek Farm prove both fun and educational. Owners Deryle and Silvia Griffith apply valuable skill sets and experience to raising pasture based sheep. Sheep who literally do nothing but … well … eat grass. I found the operation similar to our own and was eager to learn from the Griffiths who patiently

endure my questions and cross examinations to them on pasture management and rotational grazing over many occasions. The couple well qualified for the State Department by now with Silvia ageing to meet me one rainy August afternoon to preside over a viewing of a pen of ewe lambs on one occasion, dressed in her trademark gray winter coat and armed with a steaming mug of tea, happy to assist. With her keen observational skills sharpened from over twenty years of retaining prolific deep-bodied ewes, she is a shepherdess that “knows her sheep” as husband Deryle, the farm’s grazier, would often put it. A team effort for the couple, who rotate the sheep in summer grazing months on 9, roughly 20acre, paddocks with forages consisting of clover, alfalfa, Timothy and Trefoil. “The sheep simply have improved the pasture over time”, says Deryle. “Are really efficient at converting grass into meat.” For the Griffiths, whose interest is in a low input, pasture-based system for higher profit – grass is their key to success. The lambs grow to market age during the summer and are sold in the fall about the time when pasture begins to give out. Deryle prefers a mixture of grasses, legumes and forbs versus a monoculture of one kind of plant. The diversity providing a more balanced diet for longer periods during the growing season under different weather conditions. “Just like animals, plants need to eat and drink’, he adds. Their food being absorbed through the roots, though a small amount can be absorbed through leaves, requiring nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium. By using managed grazing, controlling the flock’s access time on the farm’s subdivided paddocks means peak performance for the lactating ewes and can be a complex skill that takes time to master, but the payoff is well worth the effort for Deryle, who cites several authors whose written works have benefitted the learning process for him. Among many, a book by Acres USA Magazine’s executive editor and founder Charles Walters shoes; “GRASS – The forgiveness of Nature”, is an important overview of grasses in our environment. Also André Voisin’s “Grass Productivity”, another must read on ecological pasture management can be found in the Griffith’s evergrowing home library, which boasts of a wide ranging assortment of books on agriculture. Alas, with the decided misery of the relentless August rain falling about, the ewe lambs in the pen looked rather good and remained plump. The decision was made and the ewe lambs were sold, Silvia’s cup of tea by now long forgotten, sitting atop the gatepost. FEBRUARY 14 Finally, a tentative break to the winter cold. Only -15°C at the noon hour today. A, moving further afield with the feeding. Unrolling hay upon fresh snow for the ewes who can afford to wander below the field again. Dazzling afternoon sunshine.

BC farmers and researchers tag team climate change adaptation Over the next four years, farmers and researchers across the province will be working together to demonstrate and evaluate technologies and practices that increase the resilience of British Columbia’s (B.C.) farms and ranches as producers adapt to a changing climate. Thanks to funding through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, delivered through the Farm Adaptation Innovator Program (FAIP), 10 new applied research projects will explore solutions to climate change-related challenges facing agricultural commodities across B.C.

Two projects, one led by the BC Forage Council and one led by the Peace River Forage Association of British Columbia, will investigate how innovations in forage management practices and technologies can improve soil health and boost yields while enhancing resilience to drought conditions and extreme rainfall. The projects, taking place in partnership with producers in the Cariboo and Peace regions, will also evaluate how these practices impact the capacity of the soil to store carbon and contribute to the removal of carbon dioxide (a greenhouse gas) from the atmosphere.

The right tool is a game-changer.

The University of British Columbia (UBC) is leading a project – in collaboration with vegetable producers in the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island and the Kootenay & Boundary regions – where on-farm trials will be used to implement, monitor and model soil and water management practices. The project will evaluate which practices are best for long-term soil health, based on regional climate conditions and soil type, to ensure soils are more resilient to the extreme rainfall and drought conditions expected with a changing climate. Changing climate conditions are also resulting in shifting pest populations, and E.S. Cropconsult is leading two projects focusing on pest management. One project will test new pest management solutions with blueberry growers in the Lower Mainland, and one will increase access to pest management resources for small-scale berry and vegetable producers in the Lower Mainland and SquamishLillooet regions. All 10 projects will include field trials, demonstrations and the development of producer-focused informational resources that will allow research results to be shared broadly. The Farm Adaptation Innovator Program is part of the $6-million Climate Change Adaptation Program funded by the federal and provincial governments through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership and is delivered by the BC Agriculture & Food Climate Action Initiative (CAI).

“Canadian farmers and ranchers are on the front lines of climate change and are key players in the fight against it. Our Government knows the environment and the economy go hand-in-hand, and we will continue working together with B.C. researchers and producers to find innovative and sustainable solutions that will help farmers across the province to adapt while remaining competitive,” says Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture for British Columbia. “When it comes to climate change, we have to work together to adapt. The Farm Adaptation Innovator Program is about farmers and researchers collaborating on solutions and results that can be shared throughout the province. Farmers work hard to offer British Columbians fresh and local products year round, and these projects

will support our food security in the future,” says Marie-Claude Bibeau, federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food. Serena Black, BC Forage Council agrees. Project: Innovative pasture rejuvenation practices in B.C.’s central and northern interior “The Farm Adaptation Innovator Program enables producers to partner with researchers to trial innovative practices on-farm that address the immediate and longterm impacts of climate change. It also assists industry associations to work proactively with producers to ensure they are resilient and profitable into the future.” Key Facts: $1.4 million has been allocated across 10 FAIP projects to support research and knowledge sharing to help B.C. farmers adapt to climate change. Project and funding partners are providing an additional $500,000 in project funding. Project work will begin in spring 2019 and run for up to four years. Fifteen projects were completed under FAIP between 2014 and 2018. FAIP is funded by the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, a fiveyear, $3 billion investment by the federal-provincial-territorial governments to strengthen the agriculture and agri-food sector. The BC Agriculture & Food Climate Action Initiative (CAI) develops tools and resources that increase the capacity of agriculture to adapt to climate change. Guided by industry, CAI brings together producers, government and researchers to develop a strategic, proactive and pan-agricultural approach to climate adaptation. Agritech making fruit more accessible for BC British Columbia (B.C.) agritech companies are partnering with the federal and provincial governments to find the perfect pairing between food and technology. A number of innovative projects are receiving investments under the Canadian Agricultural Partnership. B.C. pears are a delicacy, though their ripening time makes it difficult for British Columbians to enjoy this fruit consistently. Consolidated Fruit Packers Ltd. (CFP) of Kelowna is eager to change that by bringing innovative new methods to the Canadian pear market. Pears are a unique fruit because they are one of only a few fruit species that do not ripen on the tree. They require time for the sugars to develop off the branch, which can pose a challenge for consumers eager to enjoy a local pear. CFP is studying the process required to create a pre-conditioned pear that consumers will be able to take home and enjoy immediately or soon after purchase. Defining the conditions that create the per-

fect pear will allow CFP to offer a local pear with a more consistent texture and flavour. Approaching this challenge from another angle, CFP is developing the optimal method of packaging to further enhance the sweet and juicy flavour that B.C. pears are known for, to provide consumers with the best eating experience. This project is one of many examples of businesses that are partnering with the federal and provincial governments to help British Columbians access more local fruit and support growers and producers. A project by Vancouver-based Vintality,a subsidiary of Geotronics Consulting Inc., is working with B.C. vineyards and fertilizer companies to boost yields and grape quality while lowering the amount of fertilizer needed to grow grapes. Geotronics Consulting has designed a fertilizer trailer with GPS technology that will automatically dispense precise amounts of liquid fertilizer to targeted areas on the property

thanks to its built-in program. This will reduce the amount of fertilizer and water used in the vineyard while ensuring that the plants are getting the nutrients that they need. The project is designed to increase the competitiveness of B.C.’s grape and wine industries by enhancing the tools growers, producers and processors can access to produce their products for consumers. The CFP and Vintality projects highlight a small sample of the innovative ideas that B.C.based organizations are working on to build a more sustainable future. Projects under the Canada-British Columbia Agri-Innovation Program have received nearly $2.6 million in funding from the Canadian Agricultural Partnership. The partnership is a five-year federalprovincial-territorial agreement that includes $2 billion in cost-shared strategic initiatives delivered by the provinces and territories, and $1 billion for federal programs and services through March 2023.

The spotlight was on the province’s honeybees and other native pollinators at the Parliament Buildings, as May 29, 2019, was proclaimed the official Day of the Honey Bee in British Columbia. Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture, was joined on the steps of the Parliament Buildings by representatives of the BC Honey Producers Association, Capital Region Beekeepers Association and Worker Bee Honey Company. She announced that the Bee BC program will receive up to $100,000 a year over the next three years to support community-based research on bee health. “The beekeeping community in the province plays an important role in the daily lives of every British Columbian in B.C.,” said Popham. “They contribute to our amazing agricultural industry by pollinating crops and produce delicious locally produced honey that British Columbians can trust. Bee health is important to our government, which is why we’re increasing funding to Bee BC to support community-based research projects, to help support future gen-

erations of honeybees and other native pollinators.” The topics of honey bee and pollinator health were discussed. Peter Awram of the Worker Bee Honey Company spoke about his work developing a B.C. honey purity database. The BC Honey Producers Association was onsite with manual extractors and observation hives to help educate visitors about how honeybees work and how honey is harvested from hives. “We appreciate all the help and support from the ministry and the Investment Agriculture Foundation of BC for helping ensure that honey, the only truly natural sweetener, stays pure,” said Awram. “We are going to make sure that B.C. honey stays being the highest quality honey in the world.”] Since 2017, the Province and the Investment Agriculture Foundation have provided $150,000 to Bee BC. The program is delivered by the foundation and supports small-scale regional or community-based projects to research, explore, field test and share information about best management practices associated with

bee health. “The beekeepers of B.C. truly appreciate the support from Minister Popham and the people of B.C. through the Ministry of Agriculture,” said Kerry Clark, president, BC Honey Producers Association. “Our beekeepers’ association will continue to work hard to try to enable our piece of the bee world to improve.” Bee BC funding is helping British Columbians get active and inspired to save the province’s bees and pollinators. To date, 29 projects have been funded through the program. The third round of projects just began, with close to $27,000 allotted to the six projects underway.

Recurring drought is a natural part of the climate in many areas of Canada and creates a challenge when managing grazing and forage resources. Although droughts are often unpredictable, they are inevitable in many regions, so long-term farm and ranch management must include planning for and consideration of how drought will affect the entire system – including plants, livestock and water sources. As much as possible, management should be focused on leaving litter (plant residue) behind to provide shade and insulation to the soil surface, reducing soil temperatures and minimizing moisture loss through evaporation. Find strategies for managing through a drought, as well as preparing for a drought before it happens, at http://www.beefresearch.ca/ research-topic.cfm/drought-management-strategies-96

Make the right flea beetle spray decision: 8 steps

By Autumn Barnes Most fields will not require a foliar spray in addition to seed treatment, but you want to check to make sure. Follow these 8 steps to make the right economic decision. Step 1. Know the spray threshold. The action threshold for flea beetles in canola crops in Canada is an average leaf area loss of 25% or more. Research to re-evaluate these thresholds found that canola with up to 25% leaf area loss will yield the same as canola with no leaf area loss at al. Yield loss starts to show after 25% leaf area loss and becomes economic (yield loss is more than the total cost of the foliar spray operation) at around 50% leaf area loss. The reason for the ‘action threshold’ for flea beetles is that leaf area loss can escalate quickly from 25% to 50% or more in a severe infestation. Step 2. Assess leaf area loss. With thresholds in mind, check plants in a number of areas in the field to get an average damage level. Scout the newest leaves. If cotyle-dons are chewed up but newest leaves show very little feeding, then plants may be out-growing

the threat or seed treatments may be having an effect (or both). On the other hand, if cotyledons are under 50% but first true leaves are not present, flea beetles may be nipping off fresh apical meristem – the growing point for first leaves. If the meristem is lost, these leaves could be considered 100% lost. Mark those plants and return in a day or two to see if true leaves are showing. Step 3. Assess stem damage. This is especially important in foul weather (wind, cool) that drives flea beetles down to leaf undersides and leaf stems. While feeding marks on the stem are likely much more consequential than feeding on a leaf, we don’t currently have a way to include stem feeding in the leaf-area loss thresholds. Plants that die due to stem feeding would have 100% leaf area loss, but seedlings that die in this fashion are hard to find and could also be lost for various other reasons, including cutworms, frost and seedling diseases. Scouting note: Daily scouting needs to happen in areas approaching action threshold. Within two or

three days, flea beetle feeding can escalate way beyond threshold, and actually wipe out whole areas of a field, especially in hot, dry and windy conditions. Step 4. Assess flea beetle feeding activity. Are the insects still present and continu-ing to feed? If it looks like populations are dwindling, a spray may not be necessary. If flea beetles are slow and dopey, it may mean they have ingested seed treatment insec-ticide and are no longer feeding. But check again to make sure. Time of day and weath-er can influence flea beetle activity. On rainy days, for example, flea beetles will usually take cover, so rain will slow or even stop feeding for the time being. Rain can also help the crop more quickly recover. Step 5. Consider the plant stand. This should influence your approach to the thresh-olds. With a thin stand of 4 plants per square foot, for example, growers can’t afford to lose any plants and may want to take action when damage is only 20-25%. But with counts in the high end of the recommend range (of 5 to 8 plants per square

foot), grow-ers can afford to lose a couple of plants without sacrificing harvest yield. Step 6. Check the crop stage. After the 4-leaf stage (4 true leaves), the threat is likely over because the crop usually has enough plant material to feed flea beetles without compromising growth. If the crop is uneven (some plants are at the 4-leaf stage and some are earlier), keep scouting until most of the crop has at least 3 or 4 true leaves. Step 7. Check canola fields frequently. Seed treatment insecticide starts working when the seed imbibes water and it can remain active for about 3-4 weeks after that point. If you have enough moisture for seed to imbibe and germinate, you have enough to solubilize the active ingredient and allow it to move into the plant. Flea beetles need to consume some plant tissue to get a dose of the protectant. High levels of flea beetles can overwhelm seed treatments. And in a slow developing crop, seed treatments can lose their protective capacities before the crop reaches the 4-leaf stage. Scout often dur-ing these first three weeks, and if flea beetle levels are building and are close to thresh-olds, daily checking for a few days may be required. Step 8. If spraying is required, only use pesticides registered for flea beetles in canola. Refer to product labels for proper use instructions. No pre-harvest interval con-cerns exist at this stage, but this could be a deciding factor on which product to use later in the season. Specific products are limited to one application per season and a grower may want to keep these in reserve. Four ABP directors travelled to Ottawa this week for an intensive day of meetings with federal government officials. The Canadian Cattlemen’s Association government relations staff arranged 14 meetings with 13 MPs to discuss topics ranging from the economy and market access to the new Canada’s Food Guide and Front of Package Labelling. Other key issues raised were the workforce labour shortages in agriculture and changes to transportation regulations. ABP directors reiterated the positive outcomes of transportation research conducted by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. This research found 99.95 percent of cattle on long hauls over four hours and 99.98 percent of cattle on short hauls less than four hours reach their destination in good condition. Our main concern is that the new regulations could decrease positive outcomes and increase stress on cattle. The government and industry have partnered on research that is currently underway evaluating the stress caused by unloading and reloading cattle.

Lakeshore 4-H Community club report I’m Liam Koop from the Lakeshore 4-H Community Club and things are definitely gearing up for 4-H activities. On April 27, we had our auction and family dance fundraiser at Cecil Lake Hall where we danced and bought things at the auction. A special thanks to all the businesses who donated items or services for our auction. Usually the end of the month is weigh-in time for swine and sheep. Sheep can be weighed in a variety of ways but we weigh them by lifting them up and hopping on a bathroom scale. We’ll probably keep doing this, at least as long as my brother’s back holds out. Pigs can be weighed by measuring their length and their girth and these measurements can translate to a fairly accurate total weight. Our pigs and lambs are gaining well and we’re hoping to get

ur club judging rally is coming up at the end of this month. At the judging rally we are evaluated on our ability to compare and identify superior qualities in various projects including sheep, beef, swine, as well as some other projects. We also are required to participate in an identification table where we will identify the names and purposes of various agricultural tools. After this rally, 4-H members can go to the district judging rally to compete against other groups. Just a reminder, with summer coming up, try to set aside some time in July to come to the Achievement Days and see how well we’ve done with our projects and support 4-H.

B.C. oil, gas well restoration timelines released At least 10,000 oil and gas wells will be restored by 2036 as part of the BC Oil and Gas Commission’s Dormancy Regulation announced May 31. Minister of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources Michelle Mungall said the Comprehensive Liability Management Plan will ensure 100% of the cost of reclaiming oil and gas sites continues is paid for by industry.

vides the BC Oil and Gas Commission with the tools it needs to better protect our land and water,” Mungall said. The minister stressed the plan puts no direct cost on B.C. residents, protects public safety and safeguards the environment. She said the plan would speed up the rate at which sites are restored to their pre-activity state. The ministry said B.C. has about 10,000 inactive and abandoned wells under the care and control of viable companies.

ON THE

OPEN ROAD R0011490554

Always wear a brain bucket when riding. Always Helmets, the greatest debate in the motorcycle community is the one about whether or not to wear a helmet.

the ear area. There is room for prescription glasses without getting a headache from the pressure.

For me the debate is more along the lines of - what helmet should I wear?

For the size of it, the helmet is very light, and the way it rests on my motorcycle jacket collar in the back makes it feel like you are also wearing a Hanns device in a race car. Your head doesn’t go back as far as it does with a beanie, that’s for sure!

I have been riding either my own or as a passenger for over 40 years. Other than my beanie which fit like a glove and kept the debris and sun off my head, I have only ever had one helmet that was DOT approved that I truly loved and that was the Bell Pit Boss. Notice though that both are open face style helmets. I have tendencies towards being claustrophobic that can make a full face helmet a non - starter for me. Breathing in the stale air inside the helmet, not unlike having your head under the blankets, causes me to panic. I decided to give a modular helmet another try. My reasoning was that if I was in a crash my chin and face would be spared the inevitable road rash. Kristina Gould from Voss fitted me for the 580 Conquest, I chose bright yellow with the thought that looking like a mad wasp might make people notice me. She sent me home with the helmet and the anti fog liner for the lense, all in under $350.00 Canadian. The Anti Fog PinLock Lense installs like a dream, took 3 seconds. Learning how to use the drop down inner sun visor and unlock the jaw another 10 seconds. Learning to take off and put back on the main visor, a little longer, 30 - 40 seconds. The helmet fits perfectly, it’s not too tight in

Surprisingly good field of view too. I did not feel restricted in the vision department at all. The drop down inner visor is fabulous. Unlike some brands out there, this inner lense is not flimsy and does not smack your nose either. The helmet is easy to do up, and the mechanical jaw lifts relatively easily, however the visor locks down pretty hard, causing that uncomfortable in the stomach feeling.

This is truly a beautiful helmet, well constructed, comfortable and I felt very safe in it, but the two caveats for me were the inability to drink a beverage without lifting the jaw up and not being able to breathe comfortably when the visor was down and locked in place. Neither of those two things has anything to do with the helmet. I will be looking at getting myself the Voss 303 Dual Lens Open Face in the near future. I like how the sides of the helmet extend past that of the traditional ¾ helmet and think my face would feel less exposed to road rash. I look forward to hopefully the same kind of fit and comfort that the 580 Conquest has. I’ll let you know when I get it and have had the chance to ride in it. Belt Drive Betty, Editor & Rider.

One other thing, and this is nothing against the helmet but rather it is about the style of helmet. I drink a lot of fluids when I ride, and constantly having to lift the jaw up to have a drink was really distracting. I don’t want to buy or wear a camelback so that means I will be changing helmets. I gave it the good old college try, several times over the 1,200 K I rode on the weekend, but nope, riding with the visor up was way more comfortable for me. The noise inside the helmet wasn’t bad at all. In fact it was much quieter than many of the helmets I have tried in the past, including an older version of the VOSS Modular. The anti fog lense did its job exceedingly well, but I just felt like I couldn’t breath.

The Dusty Trails Ranch near Buick Creek, BC is a unique combination of real Western Heritage, coupled with an infinite real estate and business investment opportunity. In total, there are 16 quarter sections of pristine ranch land in an area as remote as you want it to be and is currently an active bison ranch with 220 cows out on the range. The ranch has abundant water with a picturesque creek seemingly etched from north to south across the entire ranch. The 4 sections contain 900 broke acres with 250 of those seeded to rye and the balance seeded down to grass. The owner has never used pesticides, herbicides or fertilizer on the ranch, opening up the possibility of raising higher margin organic beef and bison products. The northerly portion of the ranch has over 6 miles of new 5 wire fence with a hot centre wire. The entire handling system has been recently re-done. The new cabin with loft is hand made of 8 x 8 timber all chinked with a wraparound deck on 2 sides. The cabin is wired for solar, wind or genset power. The highly fertile soil is in an area known for abundant moisture. Buy low, sell high will undoubtedly ring true for the new owner. There is $17,299 annual SLR revenue.

Dusty Trails Ranch - 16 contiguous quarters for Sale July 30, 2019 | Buick Creek, BC

Bison may be bought as part of the package by private treaty and left on the ranch if high bidder prefers (contact CLHbid.com for bison terms). Starting bid for Dusty Trails Ranch is only $700,000.

Correction Line Bounty for Sale

Highway 2 Unlimited for Sale

Bronco Creek High for Sale

July 25, 2019 | LaGlace, AB

August 7, 2019 | Sexsmith, AB

August 8, 2019 | Dunvegan, AB

Located on the correction line, five and one-half miles north, north-west of LaGlace, Alberta, the parcel is over 128 acres in size. The soil is highly fertile situated on a lower plateau below the Saddle Hills in an area known for generally good precipitation. While the land appreciates in value, a buyer will realise significant annual revenue from both Surface Lease revenue (fixed for five year periods) and Right of Way access revenue (varies year to year) to the massive pond situated close to the correction line. Local farmers will know the quarter based upon the bumper crops it has produced over the years. Starting bid $310,000.

Whether you’re looking to escape to the country or merely looking to expand your agriculture land base, then Highway 2 Unlimited will be of interest to you. The quarter section with 2300 feet of frontage borders Highway 2 North. In total there are 127 acres of prime fertile land. The land is well drained from east to west. The slope of the quarter ensures the two, large 4800 square meter dugouts, located along the frontage, remain replenished. The quarter is located only six kilometers north of the Town of Sexsmith, Alberta which has all the amenities of a much larger centre including doctors, schools and shopping. Starting bid $300,000.

The SE-36-79-5-W6 is made up of over 100 acres of deeded unique recreational land situated high above Bronco Creek on the west, and the majestic Peace River two miles to the north below. If you’re an avid camper or river boater and you’re wanting the privacy of your own land, then this land is a must see. The quarter has a mature dugout with a surface area of over 4,500 square meters that could be used as a source of water for industrial activity or stocked with Rainbow Trout. The quarter comes with power. Access is right off the pavement. further east. The perfect recreational quarter to share with family and friends. Starting bid $140,000.

How productivity gains affect farm income – part 2 Last week, I argued that productivity gains do not necessarily increase farm income. This week, I show how higher productivity can benefit consumers and what producers can do to stay ahead.

Growth in productivity has helped to keep a lid on the rising cost of food. By increasing Canada’s and the rest of the world’s ag output, the per unit cost of the raw materials used in food processing has declined.

Productivity growth in agriculture is why the world has not fallen in the Malthusian trap, a situation in which population growth exceeds food supply, creating global food shortages. Productivity gains have proven as the most effective means of alleviating world hunger.

Figure 1 shows nominal and real food price indices in Canada. The nominal index captures the actual price of food while the real index accounts for overall price inflation. Nominal food prices have steadily increased over the last 40 years. After adjusting for inflation, today’s prices haven’t changed much since 1980. Given that the world has added more than 3 billion people and that agricultural markets are global, it’s amazing that real food prices have stayed constant. Canadian income has grown but food expenditures have flattened. As such, Canadian households are spending a declining share of their income on food, allowing them to spend more on other goods and services.

3 ways farmers can stay ahead

While productivity gains do not always benefit farmers’ income in the long-term, there are a few ways to stay ahead within the changing farm environment.

2. Develop new markets Increasing demand at a large scale requires resources usually exceeding those of a single farm. However, governments and industry stakeholders throughout the supply chain develop new markets by introducing new products (e.g. ethanol in gasoline), boosting demand (e.g. generic advertising) or opening new markets abroad (e.g. trade deals). Gaining access to foreign markets through trade agreements is key to expand the demand for an agricultural commodity. 3. Introduce new products Profit margins for niche agricultural products can exceed that of generic agricultural commodities. Despite smaller markets, niche products can command price premiums. Producers can capture additional profits by adding value directly at the farm. Value-added products and/or services can increase an operation’s profit margins instead of having that value transferred throughout the supply chain (transformation, storage, distribution, etc.). There is no free lunch. The additional revenues from adding value at the farm come with additional costs. by Sébastien Pouliot
