INDIA, CHINA TOP TRADE TALKS, GRAIN EXPORT OPTIONS (FarmLead.com, September 20, 2019) Grain markets this morning are mixed as India and China jockey for trade status with the U.S. and Harvest 2019 rolls along amidst weather concerns. For the latter, there is some late-season severe weather that’s likely to put some quality and quantity pressure on fields in the Northern Plains through the weekend as the system is expected to “bring abundant moisture”. This comes on top of some heavy rains that hard red spring wheat and durum fields in the area have received the last few weeks, creating some serious quality issues (as per a few Twitter admissions). Accordingly, Minneapolis hard red spring wheat prices are finding some strength this morning on the adverse weather forecast and quality concerns. Who Needs American Corn Exports? The American corn crop is also expected to start receiving some fall weather this weekend, while the long-range forecast is calling for a wetter October. Intuitively, Harvest 2019 will be a challenge this year and the likes of Ukraine are looking to take advantage on the corn exports front. Harvest 2019 in Ukraine is seeing corn yields climb 8% from last year to 95 bushels per acre, suggesting a record crop of more than 36 MMT that the USDA said in their September WASDE report. There is some suggestion that South Korea, Japan, and China could all buy more corn exports from the Black Sea country this year. That said, the Chinese Ag Ministry says they still have about 56 MMT corn in their strategic reserves but will probably import 4 – 4.5 MMT this year. In last the September WASDE report, the USDA said that China will have nearly 200 MMT in corn stocks by the end of the 2019/20 crop year. However, the China’s strategic reserves would not be enough to meet the nationwide mandate of ethanol-blended gasoline in 2020, bringing the whole plan into question (namely supply). Through Week 2 of American corn exports 2019/20 crop year, a little less than 870,000 MT of the coarse grain has been shipped out. That’s down 37% year-over-year and not the start that you’re looking for. However, yesterday’s sales report showed 1.53 MMT of corn purchased, which was at the top end of pre-report trade expectations of 500,000 MT to 1.55 MMT. Also worth mentioning quickly is that soybean export sales last week came in at 1.72 MMT, well above the top end of the range of pre-report estimates. It’s been suggested that with Brazil’s exportable supplies of soybeans starting to dwindle, China is coming back to buy American, something that I mentioned at the end of August that the People’s Republic would probably do. It comes just as Chinese and American officials are gearing up for another big round of trade war negotiations in early October. On a somewhat related note, Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India is coming to the U.S. for some meetings and big rally in Houston that President Trump is expected to speak at. There is buzz that India is willing be America’s trade/manufacturing huckleberry if China doesn’t compromise on some major trade war issues. India Gets Rain as Canadian Pea Exports Soar A report from the USDA’s attaché in China suggests that China will produce 4MMT of pulses this year, down about 10% year-over-year due to less acres harvested and some poor growing conditions. Specific to peas, production is estimated at just 200,000 MT, down about 15% from last year, mainly because of poor returns, thanks to lower-priced imports challenging the market. It’s been estimated that China will need to import 1.7 MMT of peas in 2019/20, a 10% decline from 2018/19, mainly because of bigger stocks being carried over from the last two years. The USDA is reporting that Canada continues to be the major supplier of peas to China, especially since the trade war with the United States started up. Through the first 7 months of 2019, U.S. pea exports to China were half of what they were in 2018, whereas Canada has basically accounted for all Chinese pea imports. That said, through Week 6 of the 2019/20 crop year, Canadian pea exports are tracking nearly three times higher than the same week in 2018/20, with 311,500 MT shipped out. This comes on the heels of 230,000 MT of Canadian peas heading to China in July to end the 2018/19 crop year, as reported by Chuck Penner of LeftField Commodity Research. According to last week’s StatsCan report, Harvest 2019 for Canadian peas is looking larger than first expected. In it, StatsCan said that total 2019 pea production in the Great White North is expected to hit 4.67 MMT, a 20% increase from the 5-year average and 30% jump from last year’s 3.58 MMT harvest. That said, the Canadian peas harvest is close to being wrapped up, albeit sales of the lower quality bushels (i.e. bleached or sprouted) being sold into the market first. Notably, through earlier this week, 79% of the Saskatchewan peas harvest is complete, with the provincial government estimating that 31% will be a #1 grade, 58% a #2 grade, and 10% falling into the #3 category. Elsewhere, the monsoon season in India saw a good recovery of rains in August, and with September precipitation looking plentiful, this would mean India should have above-average moisture for the first time in 6 years. Intuitively, what this translates to for pulses is that the current kharif harvest in India should be okay (albeit planting has been a bit behind last year’s place). Further, the rabi winter crop should be set-up well, pending normal temperatures in India this winter. However, if the weather issues in North America during Harvest 2019 are more of a problem, we might see buyers – be it from India, China, or elsewhere – start to pick up their socks and get a little more aggressive to ensure they have both the quality and quantity. In fact, wrinkles and colour loss is already a bit of an issue for this year’s Canadian lentils crop. That said, like pea exports, Canadian lentil exports have started out strong as through Week 6, nearly 110,000 MT have been shipped out, including 57,100 MT last week, topping even last year’s best week. On that note, there have been some volatile, but spotty storms passing through Western Canada, some of which have included the white combine, which obviously is frustrating this close to using a real combine. For those dealing with some less than ideal options after these types of storms, feel free to reach out to me to talk about best marketing options, and/or if you just need someone to vent to. Regardless, I hope you have a great weekend and make some progress in the field To growth, Brennan Turner, CEO, FarmLead TF: 1-855-332-7653 contact@FarmLead.com @FarmLead on Twitte

Red meat industry seeks government action over China situation The cost of the “temporary suspension” of Canadian pork and beef exports to China imposed on June 25 is approaching $100 million and the longer it continues, the greater the risk to Canadian jobs. As we enter the third month of suspension, the pork and beef sectors are calling on the Government to make clear their strategy to reopen the Chinese market and ensure we have more options for export diversification when such issues arise. The suspension of product was triggered by China Customs discovering a shipment of nonCanadian pork exhibiting technical irregularities and fraudulently certified as Canadian with falsified documents. Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has provided China Customs with all the information and analysis requested to demonstrate that the source of the infractions was not Canadian. CFIA has also assured China of the strong mechanisms in place in Canada to ensure compliance with all of China’s technical requirements. Canadian pork and beef farmers and exporters have been patient and supported the Government’s efforts to find a resolution to the issue. However, as CFIA’s representations that Canada is a victim, not a culprit, have failed to resolve the matter, it becomes clear that bigger political issues are the true obstacles that the Canadian government must resolve.

We call on all parties ahead of the upcoming election to articulate how they see this file being resolved. The longer Canadian producers and exporters remain pawns in a political stand-off the more the threat of job losses will be felt. The red meat sector represents 266,000 jobs from farm to fork. We have been patient and respectful with the Government. But we are entering our third month out of China and as Chinese importers establish arrangements with alternate suppliers, it will be increasingly difficult for Canada to regain market share once the suspension is lifted. The financial investments made and commercial relations built to position Canadian meat in China are eroding daily and our global brand will be negatively impacted. The industry also expects to have a meaningful discussion on building export resilience and compensation for the millions of dollars lost by the Canadian farmers and exporters who have been the victims of the suspension. The red meat sector has seen its highs and lows in this market over the years but China remains a key trading partner for Canada. Canada has high quality and safe meat to sell and we know Chinese consumers want and need it.

Usually, it falls on the food retail and food service industries to have the primary responsibility for ensuring the safety of their foods and they are expected to provide a reasonable level of descriptive product information so that consumers can make informed decisions. Warren offers a list of resources. “The most important is the Alberta Public Health Act, and under that, Food Regulation. These regulations govern food manufacturers, distributors, restaurants, caterers, and farmers markets. Municipal and local regulations need to be looked at as well. Farm direct marketing: know the regulations – general legislation; also Business basics for Alberta food processors: a planning guide, are just some of the useful resources found on Alberta.ca.” Not for profit organizations wishing to develop local food accessibility for their community or an at-risk population, can receive support from the federal Local Food Infrastructure Fund.

“The popularity of local food in Alberta is growing, and new business models are developing in many communities,” says Jan Warren, new venture development specialist with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AF). “AF provides information and support for your new developing agriculture related business.” “All the different market channels in the food continuum must know the legalities of business set up - such as regulations and insurance - and have a complete understanding of the food safety issues in the farm to fork continuum,” she says. “Food safety is a shared responsibility all down the food chain, including producers, operators of food premises, food handlers, regulatory agencies, educators and consumers. It is different for every type of business, from foodbank to mini-mart.” She adds that Health Canada has developed standards for safety, quality and nutrition for all food sold in Canada and has given authority to provincial governments to manage food produced and sold within provincial borders. Selling into one market channel - such as a farmers’ market - has completely different permits and packaging requirements than a restaurant, different expectations

LETHAL DRUGS ARE out there

Find out how you can save a life. Every day, people are losing their lives to overdoses in BC. These deaths are preventable. Many illegal drugs, including party drugs, have been found to contain deadly fentanyl. And even more toxic carfentanil is now being detected in BC. Not using drugs is the best defence — using alone is the greatest risk. If you use drugs or know someone who does, help is available. Learn about treatment, and where to find naloxone and overdose prevention sites in your area by calling 8-1-1 or visiting www.gov.bc.ca/overdose. Your knowledge, compassion and action can save a life.

The A to Z of political campaigns Some anarchists may be looking for MP Bob Zimmer. Or someone thinks Bob Zimmer is an anarchist. Or something. The important news is that Zimmer’s campaign signage was tagged throughout Mile Zero over the weekend. Zimmer’s signs at the traffic circle and up the Al-Can Highway saw familiar art. “It is disappointing to see that several of my campaign signs have been defaced. Not only is this kind of vandalism illegal, it’s also undemocratic,” noted the alleged anarchist Zimmer on Monday.

DC Festival of Trees is lit again For the third year in a row, the Dawson Creek Festival of Trees ramps up - this year at the Dawson Creek Art Gallery on November 23. “Last year we raised just over $28,000 - bringing our two year totol to nearly $60,000,” says organizer Janine Cumberland. The event is again looking for support and sponsorship in the for of tree, wreath or decoration donations. Trees and wreaths, each usually decked out in a unique theme are auctioned off at a gala event on November 23. “Last year was a family friendly event with time for kids to meet Santa and his elves once again - from noon to 2pm.

ABP celebrates 50 years of working for producers In the late 1960s, Alberta cattle producers believed their messages were not being heard by governments and thought they needed a stronger voice in Edmonton and Ottawa. Producers as a whole needed to be better organized, financed, and coordinated in their efforts to influence policy makers. On September 3, 1969, the first meeting was called to order of the newly established Alberta Cattle Commission – a group of producers working on behalf of producers. “In the 50 years of our existence, the issues our organization has addressed on behalf of cattle and beef producers have varied widely. However, the overall challenges producers face in maintaining sustainable and competitive operations have been relatively constant,” said Rich Smith, ABP Executive Director. “Producers and ABP continue to deal with retaining access to land and water, government policies, improving production efficiency, consumer perceptions of beef, and public pressure related to animal welfare, the environment, and food safety.” The vision for our industry holds true today. ABP’s mandate has not changed and we continue to focus on our four priority areas of advocacy, communications, promotion and production. We as an organization are tasked with

carrying out our mission and we recognize the opportunity we have before us. As the future unfolds, we will continue to pursue these priorities while constantly working to make ABP a more efficient organization that engages producers and provides value for their check-off investments. The outcome of the recent plebiscite, the 2019 plan review and of course this anniversary, have all guided us as an organization to seize the opportunity going forward to revitalize, streamline and modernize.

those producers who have given considerable time and efforts to serving our industry for the past 50 years as ABP delegates, directors and volunteers. Thank you to the families who have stepped up to fill the gaps while they worked on behalf of the producers in our province. You have been and are our greatest strength,” said Christie. “We also thank in advance anyone who steps forward in the future to support your industry. You won’t regret the commitment and the beef industry will be better for it.”

“We’re suggesting little change to what we are mandated to do, but plan to introduce substantive changes in how we do this important work for our industry. At this year’s ABP fall meetings producers will have a chance to look at these proposed changes and have input on how we move forward,” said Charlie Christie, ABP Chair. Communication has and will always be a challenge in our industry, but we will continue to focus on improved ways of getting information to producers and consumers. We need producers to know what we do on their behalf and we need to share our story with the public of our industry’s great record, both environmentally and as a nutritionally rich food choice. We have a unique and engaging story to tell and now more than ever we need to tell it. “ABP without a doubt has been a cornerstone to our industry’s success. We thank all

Northern Health gives a Rotary Lake safety rundown Northern Health officials had concerns about Rotary Lake long before the tragic August 2016 drowning of 12 year-old Beverly Park. Officials were in Mile Zero Monday to discuss Rotary Lake, where it has been, and where it could potentially be going.

GLEN STEWART HORSEMANSHIP

Dr. Jong Kim, public health medical health officer for the northeast, and Ali Moore, Environmental health officer with Northern Health, were on hand at city hall Monday to give a rundown of the facility. Documents dating as far back as 1981 note poor compliance and concerns at - and with the lake, and in 1988 a notice to improve was issued at the facility. In 1994, a five-year-old drowned at the lake, and - perhaps most chilling in 1996 environmental health officials noted the single pipe intake as a concern. After the August 2016 incident saw Beverly Park die after getting her legs trapped in the suction at the lake, in 2017 the medical health office re-

pealed all exemptions granted to the popular tourism spot. It was also noted Monday in 2017 a violation ticket was issued for unapproved work being done at the facility. Mayor Dale Bumstead noted there are aspects related to the project’s improvement beyond the city’s scope, and/or are too expensive to fix. “We need an understanding before any input or investment,” he said. Councillor Charlie Parslow noted Northern Health seemed to be focused on Rotary Lake over other bodies of water in the Peace. Dr. Kim noted it was because of the popularity of Rotary Lake, and the suction at the bottom of it. Kim was clear why the lake was shut down, that the public health and safety concerns were not due to water turbidity - but due to the deaths of children. “The public health act is a blunt hammer used to close facilities for safety issues.” Below - the hole in Rotary Lake that many are not aware of or about. editor@dcdn.ca

On seizures in dogs Seizures in our pets can be a terrifying thing to experience. Seizures can range from eye twitches and clacking jaws to full body convulsions. Many animals have a ‘preictal’ phase, a period of time before the seizure where they start acting unusually. They may be wandering, staring out to space or even turn aggressive. During the seizure, animals will twitch, shake and paddle their limbs. Their eyes will be unfocused and their bodies will be rigid. All animals have a ‘postictal’ phase, where they can be disorientated, have behavior changes, and stumble. During this phase dogs can be blind as their brain is telling them that they cannot see.

ical and neurological exams. These exams assess the dog as a whole, as well as focusing on the nervous system. The neurological exam assesses the nerves of the head including vision, reflexes and their ability to move their bodies and be aware of where their limbs are. These tests can narrow down the location of a problem. Bloodwork is done to check for diseases outside of the nervous system, including liver and renal disease. Bloodwork on the red blood cells and white blood cells can tell us if there is inflammation and infection within the body. In some cases, advanced imaging such as a CT or MRI may be needed. In cases of suspected infection, fluid collected from the spinal cord can be examined to look for bacteria or inflammation.

Seizures are an emergency, especially when trauma, underlying illness or toxin ingestion is possible. Seizures can damage the brain, so prompt treatment is extremely important to prevent further damage. Any animal that is seizing for more than 5 minutes at a time needs to be seen immediately by a veterinarian. The sooner after a seizure your veterinarian can perform tests, the better the diagnostic quality of those tests.

After the cause is found, your veterinarian can treat what is causing the symptoms. With very young puppies, glucose and fluids are the first line treatment. Toxins can be treated with fluids and supportive care. Infection is treated with antibiotics and pain control. In some cases, such as tumors or degenerative diseases, the goal of treatment is to keep the dog as comfortable as possible for as long as possible.

Dr. Charlotte Corbett

When we think of seizures, we usually jump to thinking of the central nervous system and brain. Infection and inflammation of the brain and meninges (the covering of the brain) can cause seizures. Head trauma, degenerative diseases, congenital abnormalities and epilepsy are all causes. In older patients, neoplasia or tumors are possible. Seizures don’t always mean something is wrong with the brain though. Often, seizures are caused by toxins or a disease in other organs. Very low blood sugar will cause seizures, especially in young puppies. Advanced liver or renal disease can cause seizures. Other causes include low blood calcium, thiamine deficiency from improper diets, and a variety of toxins. One common cause is idiopathic epilepsy, or abnormal electrical activity in the brain that causes an animal to seizure.

In some cases, all of our tests come back normal. Idiopathic epilepsy is a “rule-out” disease, meaning we eliminate all the other possibilities and are left with epilepsy. “Idiopathic” means that science hasn’t yet figured out why the disease happens. Epilepsy is abnormal activity in the brain that triggers seizures. Each dog will have triggers that set off a seizure. We can treat epilepsy but cannot cure it. Phenobarbital is used to control the seizures. This is a medication given every day that will decrease or eliminate the seizures. Potassium bromide is a medication that is used for dogs that do not respond to phenobarbital. Potassium bromide is harder to manage, since too much salt in the diet can over-ride the medication. Dogs must be kept on a strict diet, and even swimming in salt water can trigger a seizure. Epilepsy is treatable and many dogs live a long life wellIn order to determine what is causing the managed on medication. seizure and treat it, you veterinarian will run various tests. Better ways to use antibiotics on calves and cows. Four weeks prior to weaning, calves are administered their weaning vaccines. Hughes weans the calves four weeks later and gives them their booster shots. Instead of the calves remaining in the corrals and the cows sent back out to the pasture, Hughes sends the calves out to pasture so their grazing is not disrupted. After the weaning noise settles, they move the calves to their new location. Hughes said that they have created their own version of fence-line weaning that works in their system. It demonstrates that flexibility and ingenuity can help producers make techniques work in a way that makes sense in their particular circumstances. “Challenge yourself,” was the main takeaway from Hughes for anyone working to rely less on antibiotics. “Not everything that works on our ranch will work on yours, but try things and see how they work for you.”

The Bov-Innovation 1.0 session brought judicious use of antibiotics to the forefront during the fourth annual Canadian Beef Industry Conference that took place in Calgary this past August. Coaldale Veterinary Clinic’s Dr. Steve Hendrick and Stephen Hughes, Chinook Ranch owner and operator, discussed management strategies to reduce dependence on antibiotics. “The way producers access antibiotics for their animals changed on December 1, 2018,” said Lorna Baird, livestock extension specialist at Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. “Attending this session was a good way for me to expand my knowledge about antibiotic use and how Alberta producers are working within this new reality.” Baird is involved in a project that is assessing situations where antibiotic treatment may or may not be necessary. It is also looking at whether alternative therapies may be more effective with certain illnesses in calves. “Is an antibiotic being used for preventive or treatment reasons - is an important question producers should consider,” she added. “Using scours as an example, some producers give antibiotics to calves in hopes of reducing future complications of the illness instead of treating its cause. Producers in consultation with their veterinarian need to evaluate whether this is a viable herd health protocol for their operation.” Dr. Hendrick explained during the session why it was important to reduce antibiotic use, which included: Ensuring their continued effectiveness for humans and animals. The reliance of antibiotic in situations such as prevention, control and treatment. Addressing meat quality and safety for retailers and consumers. Dr. Hendrick added that medically important antibiotics - those that are relevant in human medicine - require thoughtful consideration in livestock. He discussed results from the Antibiotics Use in Canadian Feedlots study that found 85% of the antibiotics used in Alberta feedlots visited for the study were not medically important. He also noted that another survey of cow-calf operations found that un-weaned calves were the main recipients of antibiotics - primarily for treatment reasons. During the presentation, Dr. Hendrick offered these suggestions to reduce antibiotics reliance: Improve immunity. Ensure colostrum delivery since 10 to 30% of calves demonstrate failure of passive immunity transfer. Pay special attention to calves born to heifers, through obstructed labour and twins. Immunize cows, calves and bulls. Ensure adequate nutrition by feed testing and supplementing minerals and vitamins. Stephen Hughes focused his talk on strategies that he and his family use to limit the use of antibiotics in their herd. He offered these suggestions for cattle producers to consider: Lower input management. “Work with the rhythms and nuances of Mother Nature,” he said. “It is expensive and hard when you want to butt heads with her.” Hughes added that he and his three daughters found death and sickness dropped with range calving, and calving in snow to be manageable. They use a year-round grazing system, moving groups of cows often enough to be sure their environment is clean. Cows then have a clean place to calve. In an operation where calving has very few assists, if any, he said they are able to, “Let a cow be a cow. She’s pretty good at it.” Well-vaccinated cows and cows that are adapted to the management system are important to the herd. Incorporate 2-stage weaning to reduce stress

26 The Northern Horizon, September 27, 2019

Dates set for the 2019 Western Canada Conference on soil health and grazing Nora Paulovich, manager of North Peace Applied Research Association (NPARA) and conference chair announced dates for the 2019 Western Canada Conference on Soil Health and Grazing. The combined conference will take place on December 10, 11, and 12, 2019 at the DoubleTree West Edmonton Hotel The Western Canada Conference on Soil Health and the Western Canadian Grazing Conference were combined into a 3-day event in 2017. A number of Alberta applied research and forage associations organize and present these popular events with help from partners in industry and government. The conferences in 2015 and 2017 featured, among other top researchers and soil health practitioners, Gabe Brown of Bismarck, North Dakota. Paulovich said that Brown will return for this event. Other speakers and panelists are being added and the full agenda will be released soon. Registration information is also forthcoming. Farming and ranch-

ing for soil health enhances biodiversity and increases biological activity, both of which are absent in current production technology. In both cases integrating plant diversity, keeping the soil covered, maintaining living roots as long as possible, and minimal soil disturbance leads to reduced crop inputs, greater infiltration and water holding capacity, and a myriad of environmental and social benefits. Soil health is greatly enhanced when practiced in conjunction with animal agriculture. “Gabe Brown is maybe the best at cropping and livestock integration” notes Paulovich. The 2019 venue is larger than the previous location; both the 2015 and 2017 events sold out and turned registrants away. Those interested in the conference can find updated registration information at npara.ca and absoilgrazing.com Contact: : nora@npara.ca

Testing winter feed “Testing feed allows producers to develop a strategy that ensures all cattle in the herd are fed to meet their production goals while avoiding extra costs,” explains Andrea Hanson, livestock extension specialist with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AF). “Using higher quality feed early in the season could mean it is not available later in the winter when the cows really need it,” she adds. “It could get costly for the operation, either by increasing feed costs or reducing cow fertility.” “Livestock feed supplies are going to be tight in some areas of Alberta either because of dry conditions, while in other areas, quality may be an issue due to late cutting,” says Hanson. “As such, testing feeds is important to know what nutrients are available.” “When feed costs are the largest variable expense of overwintering a beef cow, overfeeding is wasting dollars. Conversely, if the animal’s nutrient requirements are not being met, it can result in thin cows which increases feed required to keep warm. That increases costs and can negatively affect their immediate wellbeing.” The formulation of a ration depends on the nutrient composition of the forage. The only way to accurately determine the forage’s nutrient composition is by sampling and testing the feed. “Using last year’s feed tests or using a provincial average for a feed’s nutritional content is not realistic or useful,” she explains. “While physical attributes are part of feed quality, they don’t tell the whole story. A bright green colour does help indicate the feed was put up with little or no rain - and that the mould level is little

to none - but it does not tell much more than that.” “Protein and energy content of the same hay field can vary greatly depending on when it was cut. Brome cut very early in the year could reach 18% protein while that same forage may only be 5 to 6% protein if cut late.” AF’s beef and forage specialist Barry Yaremcio says that the protein requirements of a cow changes depending on her stage of pregnancy. “A minimum of 7% protein is needed in the second trimester while in the third trimester, 9% protein is needed. She requires 11% protein when lactating.” Hanson adds that the most important information in a feed test includes protein, energy, and fibre. A basic forage analysis will list the moisture content of the feed stuff, energy as total digestible nutrients (TDN), either net energy (NE) or digestible energy (DE), crude protein values as well as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium and sodium. “A basic analysis should cost less than $50, which is much less than the cost of a round bale of feed, let alone the possible savings from using fewer bales of hay mixed with lower quality forages. The more advanced analytical packages will provide more details about the feed depending on what is requested. If an early frost or crop stress has been experienced in the area and there are concerns, a nitrate test may be very beneficial as would a toxin test.” Getting a representative sample of the feed to test is important in feeling confident with the analysis. “If sampling bales, samples need to be taken from a number of bales - at least 15 to 20 - from

different areas in the field and then mixed into one sample. Using a commercial core sampling tool makes the process much easier, and often local agriculture service boards or forage associations have equipment available for loan.” “Use plastic bags to ship the feed so that an accurate moisture level can be determined,” she adds. “If sampling from a silage pit, rub the loose material off the face before taking the sample from packed material from the freshest part of the silage face, and from several locations in a ‘W’ or ‘M’ pattern. Mix the samples and pack tightly into a plastic bag with as little air as possible. If the samples are not going to the lab right away, freeze to prevent any change to the silage characteristics.” “Finally, if you want a sample of the swath grazing feed, take a tub and scissors out to the field and pull various samples from the swath from locations all over the field. As the samples are pulled, cut the feed into 2-inch, 5 cm, lengths and mix in the tub. From the total sample, stuff a large zip-lock bag with a representa-

Collie Corner By Carol Nelson

Listen; this is about maintaining obedience ing. This can be easily seen if the dog has not been working for a length of time and is sent a long distance after stock. He may not listen to the handler until he gets the stock back in the handlers vicinity. The handler can find this annoying as the dog may have been quite proficient at doing the job and listening previously. It pays to realize that the dog might not be deliberately ignoring the handler but rather just so tuned into the stock that he has forgot to listen for the handler. Preventing this scenario is easily solved by checking in with the dog in a couple of places before he gets too far away. This will get him tuned into the handler and keep his ears keen while doing the job. Taking five minutes a day to spend on a structured training session where the focus is solely on the dog and whether he is listening can keep the obedience skills at a higher level than when only using the dog for work and chores. Bottom line is that obedience takes regular practice to keep it in good working condition.

Carol Nelson Keeping the level of obedience up on a dog requires regular routine maintenance and work. Teaching the dog to understand what is being asked for is the first step to a working dog but once he understands and responds to the request from the handler then it takes everyday practice to make the dog proficient at his job. If the dog is being worked every day and the handler uses due diligence to keep the dog correct and listening well then a standard as well as growth will be achieved. One pitfall with daily work is that it’s easy to let the dog get away with incorrect behavior if the job still gets done. If the dog is not corrected when the mistake occurs it will not take long before he believes this is the action the handler is looking for. Dogs are very similar to people in the fact that their skills can become rusty if they are not worked regularly. Focusing intently on livestock while still keeping an ear tuned to listen for instructions from a handler is not always an easy job. Dogs get out of practice for listen-

She says the focus of agriculture is getting broader in scope, there is a growing demand for food, and we must keep up to that demand. In Canada we are producing more beef, but herd numbers are decreasing, this speaks to our efficiency in our animals and how we are constantly advancing genetic selection, feed efficiency and the way cattle are raised and handled,” she says. “We want to gain a more positive public perception of farming and continue to work on making the industry more sustainable and finding new ways to market our products,” she adds. “Some major corporations are great supporters of the industry and it is important that we maintain and continue these partnerships. Liebenberg - High Prairie by way of South Africa, and the Netherlands Born in Durban, South Africa, Louise Liebenberg graduated from university with a Bachelor of Science. She then moved to Europe, where she would spend the next 18 years living in the Netherlands. 11 years ago, Louise emigrated to Canada and has called High Prairie, Alberta her home ever since. It’s in High Prairie that she runs her busy ranch, raising cattle and sheep, and cultivating forage production. Liebenberg, passionate about wildlife and its conservation, is heavily involved on writing and educating others on sustainable ranching without having to kill the wildlife that often lives around it. She speaks at conferences all around the world, about predator management and control. Most recently in Europe, Portugal and the University of Williams Lake. One of her next engagements will be held in the Czech Republic. The message she would like to promote to Ranchers around the world, is “If you can do better, do better.” The sustainable ranching she teaches includes using livestock guardian dogs. If running her own ranch with her children, in particular her daughter at this time, and travelling the world educating others isn’t enough, she also enjoys writing for various publications, and spending her time with children by volunteering for 4-H and working part time as a local school bus driver. When looking at the current agriculture industry, she sees a need for change in the way farming is perceived by the general public. “Advocacy is needed to negate the negativity, often perpetuated by misinformation on social media. People often think

of agriculture as large industry ranches that use less than preferable practices, but they fail to see more often the agriculture we most rely on, are actually the smaller family run farms.” She believes one way to quash the negativity might be for local farmers to hit social media and engage with the general pubic, by actually showing them what happens behind the scenes, where their food really comes from. To show the public the positives. She says when comparing Canadian agriculture to that in Europe, Canadians are still behind in making some of the positive changes needed, but we’re ready to learn. “We can improve and do better. It would be a huge roll for farmers to recognize where the issues are, teach kids to do better, and would be important to make the changes before being forced to by legislation.” There’s no doubt Louise is passionate about ranching and all of the positives and the challenges that may come with it. There isn’t much else she would rather be doing and dependant on her children, she loves the area of High Prairie and doesn’t see moving. She hopes in 10 years she may be able to take a big step back, pass the ranch down to her children and see it stay at least another generation and support her kids while they run the ranch. She sees herself possibly travelling more, writing a couple books, riding horses, possibly babysitting grandkids. When looking back, the only thing she might change, is that she wishes she had moved to Canada sooner so the kids could have been involved in youth showing younger. - with files by Amy Ressler

Donna Rowe - loving farm life after 40 years and a mantra of health is wealth Donna Rowe was born in Fairview, AB in 1957, but considers Worsley to be her hometown. After graduating from Worsley Central School in 1976, she married her husband Jim. The two began farming, with their first venture in the cattle business being a purchase of 5 commercial heifer calves from a local auction market in Fairview. Now, 40 years later, they run a busy ranch with purebred Black Angus, purebred Limousin and a commercial herd of Limo/Angus cross females. When out on the farm, you will often find Rowe filling in wherever is needed, with most aspects of the daily farm life. She also loves

cooking. “I especially enjoy cooking in the fall when you take it out to the field put the end gate down on the truck put a table cloth down and everyone eats together.” A memory passed down from her mother. Rowe loves farm life and the events that come with it, such as the shows and sales. She always likes the atmosphere that the people and livestock create. “You meet a lot of nice and interesting people.” She has worked on rodeo committees, and still is involved with 4H. “I feel 4H is so good for kids. It helps them get started in life, they learn how to work, they learn responsibility, they learn how to

speak to an audience if needed, they learn confidence! It helps so much to prepare them for the future in what ever they choose.” In 1989, she also helped form the Peace Country Limousin bull sale. “When I look at the current industry, I do see challenges. World markets, weather, government, things we have no control over, and we have to be able to manage these situations. To make solid decisions as best we can, and try to not let the decisions whether right or wrong at the time get us down. There is lots of stress out there but cannot let it consume you.” As for opportunities in the future for agriculture, “I guess there are many out there, you have to pick what you feel is right and what you like and do your best at what you try. There is so much science and technology out there, but you have to know how to use it. It’s ever changing. Even the equipment out there you farm with is a challenge, especially if you are an older farmer or rancher. Farming is big business, I feel the family farm as we were used to many years ago is slowly disappearing, but I guess that’s the challenge you face and undertake if you want to succeed.” She loves her position in agriculture and finds it satisfying and loves all the family involvement it includes. “It’s everyone working together to help each other succeed.” “If I could make one thing happen, I would like to make it easier for young people to get involved in farming or ranching where they could afford to make a living that way because the young farmers and ranchers are our future.” When asked if she could prevent one thing from happening, she replied “I wish I could have prevented BSE, that was such a set back for the cattle industry and all of agriculture. It caused lots of hardships for people and it lasted way too long which forced a lot of very productive people out of the business.” 10 years from now Rowe says she “Hopes to be doing what I’m doing now. Being a farm wife, a mom a gramma, still being very active in the cattle industry and enjoying life to its fullest! Remember heatlh is wealth!” - by Amy Ressler

ON THE

OPEN ROAD R0011490554

A formula for success on the road of life I have been sitting back watching how our community has changed and I finally found the parallels that explain some of what I see out there. Do you remember when everyone and his dog was a bike builder. You could throw a stone and hit someone who thought they were going to get rich and famous from building bikes. That was the 2000’s. Then came the big crash of 2007/8 and in a heartbeat we went from 80-100 shops you heard about all the time, to a small handful who are still here to this day. It sure weeded out those who were just in it for the money and truly had no skill and those who were downright dangerous. Tim Lajambe of Trickfactory Customs is still out there, Roger Goldammer is still bashing tin, Fitto is still painting bikes but what has changed is they have all grown and evolved into doing something else, something more than just motorcycles. For them its about doing what they love, what they know, what they are good at and doing other things that feed them. Sometimes, like in the case with Trickfactory, they are lucky to be able to do both, find a side hustle that is soul filling and a daytime job that is also soul filling. They host the West Coast Tattoo & Culture Show, they build hotrods, motorcycles and paint guitars, bikes, rods and anything else interesting. Roger too has shifted his talents to other things that pay well but still bangs away on motorcycles, racing them, competing with them, riding them for enjoyment. Fitto has his own clothing line to augment his living. Eyecandy Customs is still in the game and we have other solid small shops that have hung in there. Out in the east shops like Chopper Rods are still going strong. These are names that have been around a long, long time. They have earned their stripes, they have fought the fight and come out victorious by virtue of still being in business. Only those who are flexible and willing to open their minds to opportunity to stay in the game are still in the game. That’s the evolution of trends. Very few in Canada have had the success that Jeff VanderZalm has had with Konquer Motorcycles, but

even he has expanded what they offer into Konquer Rides and Rods. Over the years I have watched people come and go in this community, lots of them. People who thought “I am going to have the best motorcycle “X”, whatever that X was and in a few years they fail and wonder why. It happens with Bed and Breakfasts, it happens with RV and Campgrounds, it happens everywhere in motorcycling. People who discover the motorcycle community and have a passion for riding think they are going to make their mark the motorcycle business industry. Some do, but truly, very few do. Take for example leather shops. Those who are successful do not rely solely on the motorcycle community because they understand one thing. In Canada, there are just barely 1 million for highway use motorcycles registered. In western Canada that number is roughly a ¼ million. I have been wearing my leather jacket for 20+ years. My jacket is thick, full hide, custom built for me in an era where everywhere you turned there was another gal building custom riding gear. Why were so many women’s riding garments custom made? Stuff in dealerships didn’t fit us. Today, dealerships are selling decent gear, in many cases the gear they make today fits far better than it used to and so, the demand for the craft of leather work has gone down. Today, you are hard pressed to find anyone doing great leatherwork and when you find one, you’d best be prepared to wait as they are in big demand. Here’s the truth folks. Only the truly passionate and relentless survive and thrive. No one thrives doing work they dislike! The motorcycle business community is like any other, they are all fighting for their chunk of real estate and they are not going to go down or give any up without a fight. Be prepared to lose people you thought were your friends. Be prepared to work for hours like a slave for

seemingly no reward. Be prepared to have people tell you that your idea is foolish, talk behind your back and disparage you.. Be prepared to learn, and learn, and learn. Be prepared for people to use you and then crap all over you. Be prepared to have people try to destroy you out of power hungriness or envy. Why endure all of that? The failures, the challenges, why endure them? Why go through all of that? When you find a need this industry/community has and fill it with passion, enthusiasm, temerity, knowledge and talent, you can survive and thrive. If you have those qualities, don’t let anyone try to deter you. REMEMBER that in business as in all things life, your motorcycle has taught you the one life lesson that is the most important - FOCUS - LOOK TO WHERE YOU WANT TO GO. Focus on what you want, the outcome, not where you are today. If you look down at where you are on your motorcycle for any length of time, what is the outcome? You go down. If you focus continually on where you want to go, what happens? You get to your destination. Be open minded. You just never know where the inspiration for opportunity is going to come from. Focus on where you want to go and put your passion and energy on what you want and your chance of success goes up immeasurably. It’s the only thing that works. It’s the only thing that has ever worked. If you really want to succeed in business blogging, travelling, being an influencer, being a photographer, owning a bar, a restaurant, a repair shop, you need to learn how to market, manage and grow your business. by economic factors is a preference measure, or demand index. Figure 1 illustrates beef consumption and demand indexes. Both measures start at the same point (2010). The decline in beef consumption is pronounced after 2012. While consumption declined, the demand for beef remained strong, and even increased from 2014 onward. Retail beef prices rose 13.5% that year, followed by an additional 15% in 2015. That could have triggered a larger decline in consumption if it were not for positive consumer preferences. reporter@dcdn.ca Retail meat price ratios illustrate trends in affordability Retail price ratios offer a direct comparison of beef, pork and chicken affordability for consumers (Figure 2). As prices of beef moderated and the price ratio relative to pork and chicken eased, the downward trend in beef consumption recovered. Domestic retail beef prices remain historically high relative to the average long-term pork and chicken retail prices. Preferences for beef have been strong considering the small increases in consumption noticed in the last few years.

For Kathleen Whymark

Protein has been a hot topic on the dinner plate of Canadians. Plant-based proteins have received a lot of attention lately. But what do we know of the actual demand and preference for animal proteins? We introduce a quarterly demand index to measure consumption preferences for beef and other meats. The barometer reveals the preference for beef remains strong. Beef consumption and preferences don’t always trend together Canadian per capita beef consumption has been on a declining trend over the past several decades. There are multiple reasons, but economics play a role. Beef consumption declined 11.5% from 2013 to 2015, reaching a low of 16.12 kg per person. This coincided with retail beef prices rising 30.7% over the same period. Evaluating prices, income and consumption patterns together reveals possible differences between consumer preferences and actual consumption trends. When incomes grow, beef prices decline or the prices of competing meat rises, consumers should be purchasing more beef. The opposite is also true. So we compare expected changes in beef consumption to actual patterns. The difference which is not explained
