By Autumn Barnes We’re seeing more green seed in Alberta canola this year. The downgrade factor always prompts a lot of questions. Here are answers to the more common ones. Will green content go down over time in storage? It may drop slightly in storage, but significant movement – enough to improve grade – is not likely. Keep an accurate record of green counts as grain enters the bin so you can compare it to counts when the bin is unloaded. Will green seed go down in the dryer? Drying can shrivel up green immature seeds, which might seem to have a benefit, but it does not reduce the green in mature seed. Why does green increase the storage risk? Research has shown that green canola seeds do increase storage risk, even if canola is dry and cool, but we’re not sure why. It could be that small shrivelled canola seed, which often comes with high green seed, can mean smaller air pockets between seeds in the bin. Smaller particles will increase the resistance to air flow. This makes it even more important to leave the fan on as it will need to work longer to cool the entire bulk. What happens to green seed when canola overwinters in the field? We don’t have research on this, but we assume that green locked in by frost will remain. And by now, most fields will have been hit by heavy frost. In the Canadian Grain Commission’s quality report for canola harvested in spring 2017, there was no statistical difference in chlorophyll content for spring-harvested samples versus samples from canola harvested in the fall. What causes high green? Most green seed issues result when heavy frost hits canola before the seeds mature. This permanently stops the chlorophyll-clearing process and locks in green. Nothing can

be done to reduce this green. In other cases, cutting canola too green or in hot weather that leads to fast dry down can trap green in the seeds. This green can clear if the canola has not experienced a frost and the seeds are re-wetted and warm – which can restart the enzyme process. Why is green seed a problem for processors? Chlorophyll must be removed to produce the light-coloured oil customers expect. Processors use a clay filtration process, adding “Fuller’s earth” or “montmorillonite clay” to the oil. Chlorophyll molecules bond with the clay particles. The clay is then filtered out, taking the chlorophyll with it. Canola oil with higher chlorophyll content will require more clay and possibly more passes with the clay to remove that chlorophyll, adding to the cost required to clarify the oil. What are the grading factors for green seed? No.1 canola may contain up to 2% distinctly green seeds and a maximum of 5% damaged seed (including green). No.2 is 6% distinctly green and 12% total damaged seed. No.3 is 20% distinctly green and 25% total damaged seed. Anything above that is sample. The Canadian Grain Commission’s Official Grain Grading Guide says damaged seed includes canola seeds that are: Distinctly shrunken or shriveled; badly discoloured from mould; completely and densely covered with rime (which is the lining of the pod adhered to the seed); excessively weathered, sprouted, tan coloured, distinctly green, heated, insect damaged or otherwise damaged. Breakfast Brief CANOLA, SOYBEAN PRICES LOOK FOR NOVEMBER DIRECTION (FarmLead.com, November 1, 2019) Grain markets are mixed entering November, a month that’s hopefully going to include a few trade deals with China, which would help canola and soybean prices. Before getting into grain markets, on Wednesday, U.S. Federal Reserve dropped interest rates by 0.25% (or 25 basis points), the third time this calendar year that they’ve made a cut to keep the U.S. economy humming and out of a recession. That said, Fed Chairman Jerome Powell said that no further cuts would be likely as long as the economy expands moderately, voicing some optimism.

10 Reasons to Grow Pulses

Conversely, in Ottawa, the Bank of Canada held interest rates at their current levels, as they’re looking at economic challenges from a different angle than the U.S. Federal Reserve. More specifically, the BoC’s Stephen Poloz is cautious against creating further incentive to borrow when household debt levels in Canada are already amongst the highest in developed economies/nations.

Whether you’ve never grown pulses or haven’t grown them in a while, we’ve got 10 good reasons why you should think about growing pulses.

Weekly U.S. ethanol production numbers released yesterday shows that total volume so far in 2019/20 is tracking nearly 5% behind last year. The corn bears are certainly comparing that to the USDA’s forecast of production bumping up 0.4% from 2018/19. On the soybean side of things, we’re expecting to see the USDA say later this afternoon that all crushers (not just NOPA ones) used 161.8M bushels of soybeans in September (or 4.4 MMT if converting bushels into metric tonnes).

1. Pulses reduce your input costs. Pulses fix their own nitrogen, so there’s no need for the added cost of nitrogen for your crop.

In some disappointing news, Chile has decided to walk away from its duties to host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit later this month due to ongoing riots in their country. It’s disappointing because it was expected that this is where U.S. President Trump and Chinese President Xi would sit down and sign “Phase One” of a new trade agreement.

2. Pulses spread your workload. The growing season for pulse crops differs somewhat from that of other crops, in some cases allowing you to seed and harvest earlier or later than other crops.

While we know negotiations will continue over the phone today, President Trump tweeted out on Thursday that Phase One represents “about 60% of a total deal” that he’s looking to make.In the meantime, grain traders are battling through the weaker international business (notably, corn and soybean exports), with Bunge CEO Greg Heckman saying on this past quarter’s earnings call, “I don’t know that we could see a much more difficult environment.”

3. Pulses give you diversified marketing options. You can grow pulses for export or domestic use for the human consumption, animal feed, or fractionation markets.

Where Do Soybean Prices, Exports Go Now? With a trade deal teetering on the table, the market is looking for some sort of assurances in November that something is going to get done. As mentioned in Wednesday’s Farm Lead Breakfast Brief, soybean prices and pork markets are watching each other very closely, with the latter being heavily impacted by very fluid supply and demand factors in China. Further, last Friday, I said that U.S. soybean exports are at a pivotal movement with China and that remains true today.

4. Pulses break disease cycles in your field. A four-year crop rotation that incorporates pulses can reduce incidences of disease in your fields.

With nearly 8 MMT of soybean exports through Week 8, that’s tracking 6% over last year, but last year is when the trade war started. Soybean prices, instead, would like to see soybean exports tracking closer to their five-year average. The next few weeks will be telling in terms of exports to China, and how soybean prices play out as a result. In yesterday’s exports report from the USDA though, China did account for more than half of the 943,600 MT of soybean exports that were contracted last week. That said, front-month soybean prices are technically performing 5% higher than they were a year ago. The better value of soybean prices is less likely to do with slightly stronger soybean exports, and more to do with the lack of crop progress, as mentioned on Monday. The delay of Harvest 2019 means that the Northern Plains are a few weeks behind, and soybean prices could be starting to take note. We already know that basis levels on corn are pretty strong but expectations are that soybean basis could start to follow suit with further weather delays on the horizon.

5. Pulses provide a second-year yield boost. Studies have shown that higher yields and quality of canola (15-96 per cent increase in yield) and cereals (41-52 per cent increase in barley yields, 20-47 per cent increase in wheat yields) can be seen in the year following pulse crops.

Canola prices are pacing alongside soybean prices with the similar dynamic that the market is looking for an increase of Canola exports to China. That said, Canadian and Chinese officials chatted face-to-face this week in Switzerland at the World Trade Organization about Canadian Canola exports. Through week 12, Canadian Canola exports topped 2 MMT, good for about a 2% bump over the same week a year ago. That said, much like soybean prices, Canola prices seem to be range bound, looking for that next major supply or demand headline that’s going to bring the market to a new territory, be it lower or higher. That said, it’s quite possible that a lot of the challenges with this year’s harvest have been factored in to current Canola prices.

6. Pulses grow in a variety of production systems. You have a lot of options when it comes to growing pulses, as they can be seeded with a variety of equipment and grow in both conventional and zero till systems under irrigation or on dry land.

Lentil, Durum Exports Cruising Along Where there is some strength on the export front are lentils and durum. We know that lentil exports started hot out of the gate, which is part of the reason why we’ve seen lentil prices improve a little bit over the course of October. We know that India though is likely the main factor behind the improvement in lentil prices on concerns about their pigeon pea crop. While green lentil prices have climbed up to 24¢ – 25¢ CAD/lbs, further gains are likely limited by geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East and competitive export pressure from Black Sea producers.

7. Pulses are profitable. Prices for pulse crops are very competitive with other crop types, and reduced input costs help contribute to a healthy bottom line. 8. Pulses improve your soil tilth. Pulses make your soil healthier by putting nutrients, including nitrogen, back into the soil.

Similarly, Italy has returned to the Canadian market as they look for quality durum, supporting both Canadian durum exports, and therefore, Canadian durum prices. Accordingly, durum exports are tracking 72% better than a year ago through Week 12 of the Canadian 2019/20 crop year. Understandably, with the increased international demand, as well as quality concerns from this year’s harvest, average durum prices in Western Canada for spot movement are sitting nearly a third higher than where they were a year ago.

9. Pulses promote soil conservation and sustainable farming practices. Crops like pulses that fix nitrogen can help reduce CO2 emissions from agriculture, and because of their water use efficiency and ability to grow in zero till systems, pulses may have a lower environmental footprint than other crop types.

Overall though, harvest isn’t finished yet, and there isn’t a lot of optimism for the crop that’s still left out in the field in Western Canada, be it the quality coming off, or just getting it off at all until spring time. As the market moves its focus away from harvest, trade deals and broader market factors (i.e. exchange rates) will take a bigger spotlight. Have a good weekend and if you’re still out in the field, keep safety a priority! To growth, Brennan Turner CEO FarmLead TF: 1-855-332-7653 contact@FarmLead.com @FarmLead on Twitter

10. Pulses are an up-and-coming crop type that grows every year. Pulse acres in Alberta have hit the 2.4 million mark and continue to grow. With increased acres come increased marketing options, making pulses an up-and-coming crop type with plenty of room to grow. Any way you look at it, pulses are good for your farm.

Here’s the thing, not every day on the farm is easy. There, I said it. Not every day is rewarding or successful and if you think it is, you’re fooling yourself. Some days there are losses, some days there are struggles. It’s a continuous hustle, with no days off. I’ve hardened myself over the years, trained myself to be smarter about overcoming adversity, learning little tricks and tips to make my life easier. I’ve become more proactive, thinking ahead and managing my time to the best of my ability. But some days, you just can’t see coming. A simple task can turn into an all-day excursion thanks to some unseen obstacle that becomes apparent only when I show up to complete the job. Some days, I look up, shake my head and ask myself what I am doing here. Those are the bad days. Most days are good days. Most days are rewarding, and successful. On the good days I can look back and smile with pride, clearly realizing the work put in. When I meet people for the first time and we strike up a conversation, one of the most common questions I get asked is an incredulous, ”Why!?” I simply smile and reply, “Why not?”. As I watch my children interact with animals, or the outdoors at such a young age, I know exactly why. When I am with my family and friends and I feel the strong

A discussion about pain management in pets Dr. Katrina Barth

As stated in the veterinary oath: veterinarians have a commitment to animal welfare and to maintain our society’s high standard of health care for pets. Included in this commitment and as a primary care giver for your furry pals, vets have a responsibility to ensure companion and food producing animals are free from pain and to alleviate/prevent animal suffering. The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association mandates that veterinarians, “must not perform surgical procedures or treat medical conditions without appropriate use of anesthetic and analgesic [pain controlling] drugs. The potential for pain in animals with surgical/ medical conditions must always be considered, and such pain must be prevented/ treated.” So in conjunction with owners, whom also want their pet free of all pain to optimize welfare, vets want to care for your animal in every way and this includes a commitment to pain management whenever possible. When a pain stimulus is recognized by the body, it’s more than a nervous response; in fact, most of the body’s major systems (cardiopulmonary, gastrointestinal, neuroendocrine, and immune systems) are affected by unrelieved/improperly treated pain. Pain causes stress, triggering the sympathetic nervous system (‘fight-or-flight’ response),

and the body then revs up defenses, creating an internal environment facilitating tissue repair and healing. But! This increased stress, or cortisol levels, actually interferes with tissue healing long-term and decreases the immune system’s ability to work. This “stress response” to painful stimuli, causes the body to be in a state of metabolic breakdown and suppresses the immune system long-term, promoting inflammation. Adverse effects from a stress response can include: predisposition to infection, increased blood pressure, decreased gut motility and retention of fluid. This fightor-flight response is an evolutionary adaption in survival after trauma/injury, but persistence is harmful, increasing patient morbidity or prolonging recovery. Hence, pain medication reduces this pain-induced stress response, and enhances patient comfort and recovery. Take home pain medicine to control a pets pain, at times, can be a choice owners can make for their pets (for instance after surgery or trauma, like a bite wound or hit by a car). A very common myth about pain is: it is beneficial in limiting a recovering animal’s activity. This is false— pain produced by tissue injury, inflammation (swellings) or direct damage to the nerves in the area, is never beneficial. Little evidence supports this, and actually, painful animals in distress will be restless, change positions more often, and lick/chew/bite at the painful sites whereas animals with properly controlled pain rest quietly. It is also false to assume breed variations. The best way to treat pain is to prevent it (called pre-emptive analgesia). Most medications (inhalational and injectable) to place animals under general anesthesia only produce unconsciousness and don’t alter pain-firing of neurons or how the body processes the painful stimuli while unconscious. If a procedure is performed with effective surgical technique, minimal trauma occurs, thus limiting the activation and sensitization of these nerve pathways to reduce pain post-surgery. Along with surgical technique, modern day medicine uses an approach called, multimodal analgesic therapy– this describes the use of different classes of pain medications, designed to work at different phases of the pain pathway in the body. Together multiple medications combat pain before it even begins, attacking pain from many angless and interrupts pain at various points in the pain phases. For instance, for a mass removal, we can locally block the area with

lidocaine, in addition to giving opioids during surgery and then sending home NSAIDS (like Meloxicam) postoperatively. This also allows us to lower doses of each medicine and reduce adverse side effects. Non-medicinal methods to control pain also exist. For example, acupuncture, laser therapy, physiotherapy and animal management programs (eg. weight loss or dietary changes) can all be utilized in animal patients. Therefore, pain control can actually facilitate your pet’s quickest return to full health. When the animal is not distressed, it won’t lick its wound, henceforth decreasing the risk of infection/dehiscence at surgical site. It will also eat/drink and sleep normally, consuming much needed calories for the healing process and rest appropriately. At Dawson Creek Veterinary Clinic, pain control is sent home with each surgical patient, and sometimes several days postoperatively depending on the procedure and patient. Many vets will mandate for most soft tissue procedures, such as a spay or neuter, to require 3-5 days of postoperative analgesia, while orthopedic surgery require a week(s) supply. Each patient can vary and owners can be an advocate if they perceive their pet to be in pain beyond the anticipated period and request additional medication. Recognizing pain in animals can be convoluted: animals attempt to hide pain from us. Studies have shown that dogs after a spay surgery, monitored by closed circuit cameras, actually stop their painful behaviors when a human researcher enters the room. We take into account vital parameters and can conclude, if not attributed to another sign, these signs can indicate pain; for example: increased heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, inappetence, aggression, and pupillary enlargement, amongst others. But, because animals can be so stoic, we are less reliant on these pain signs and research in pain management has switched its focus on predicting known painful events (taking the science from human medicine and adapting it to our furry pals). Severe pain is expected in fractures, amputations, while moderate pain is predicted from orthopedic and dental procedures. This allows vets to treat patients without requiring ‘proof’ of pain and make an effective analgesic plan for the expected level of pain tailored to each patient. Overall, diligence in recognizing and understanding pain in our pets is necessary, and a priority for veterinarians, to improve animal welfare.

Livestock mutilation called a slow death On September 21 Kristin Drschiwiski and family found one of their pure bred Charolais bulls dead - missing its penis, testicles, and ear on their farm in the Cecil Lake area. The animal’s ear tattoo was removed with what looks to be a sharp instrument. Drschiwiski said there was a weird shaped puncture hole in the brisket area size of a tooney and not very deep but it was definitely round. The two-year-old bull weighted approximately 1300-1500 lbs was found in the field along with

- “Found wound left of midline in chest.” - “skin at the site of testicles and penis is dried and retracted, could not determine if tissues were cut off.” - “right ear was present.” -“skin around mouth was missing, anus was missing, right eye was missing, penis scrotum/testicles were also missing.” - “Body presented bloated in right lateral recumbency.” - “No large wound or areas that suggest massive hemorrhage.” -“Small amount of red fluid in thorax. Thoracic cavity is nor13 other unharmed bulls. mal, no trauma.” “It looked like a slow death -“pubis of pelvis is fractured.” with no blood surrounding the -“possible septicaemia from carcass” says Drschiwiski. fractured pelvis causing death. “It was very strange.” Tissues are too decomposed to send for culture.” Because of the confusing scene; Drschiwiski first called Previously, FSJ RCMP deterthe FSJ RCMP detachment to remined this bull to have died of port it, who started an investiganatural causes and scavengers tion and directed her to call a vet removed the body parts. to do an autopsy which was completed by Rivers Animal Hospital Drschiwiski questions if this is two days after the bulls death. scavengers. NORTHWAY

Annual Bull and Select Female Sale • 1st Friday in Free bull insurance, wintering and delivery available (conditions apply)

Northway Cattle Co. is situated in the beautiful Peace River region of Alberta. We raise and sell purebred Black Angus cattle for sale as seedstock. We’re Angus enthusiasts, and as the breed has come a long way, we can now hit all our targets within the Black Angus gene pool. We run approximately 1,000 cows and are no strangers to a variety of different breeds of cattle and their respective performances in a commercial setting. We still have a lot of exotic and Angus-crossed cows in our commercial herds, but the type and kind of Angus cattle that we have been breeding are outperforming our exotic and Angus-crossed cattle at contributing more profit to the bottom line. Can we say that all Angus cattle can do that? The answer isn’t simple. With the breed as big and diverse as it is, there’s plenty of versatility today. At Northway Cattle we breed with a balanced approach: we aim for high maternal qualities with top-end performance in growth and feed efficiency. As the cow is responsible for 50% of the genetic makeup of her calf, we challenge our purebred cows to calve in the early summer on pasture by themselves where their maternal mentality, calving ease, udder and teat conformation and a vigorous calf are a huge asset. Fertility is also one of the traits at the top of our list, and select replacement heifers are only bred one cycle—if she don’t “get ‘er

The Northern Horizon, November 8, 2019

When you make a promise keep it Have you ever broken a promise? Do you break promises all the time? When you say you’re going to do something but don’t, is that breaking a promise? Do you rarely make a promise because you know they can be hard to keep? Do you only say you’re going to do something or make a promise then when will you keep it? If you don’t use the word “promise” in the sentence, is it still a promise? What does it feel like when someone makes a promise to you and then breaks it? Do you promise this, that and the other thing because it seems to help in the moment? When you make a promise, do you do everything in your power to make it come true, no matter how difficult the situation might have changed for you?

es: 1) building their confidence; 2) earning their respect; and 3) doing things in a manner they understand. That might sound straightforward but there is so much that goes into keeping those promises. Every time I’m with a horse I ask myself if I’m keeping one or more of those three promises and helping the horse. In order to help, I have to correctly read what is going on with the horse. I have to know why is he doing or not doing something before I can possibly know how to help. If I read the “why” incorrectly then I don’t know whether he needs help with his confidence, respect or understanding. If I guess the “why” correctly, I now have a chance to be able to have the feel, timing and exercises that will help the situation.

I don’t think man nor beast likes to be promised anything unless they are going to get it. Don’t even mention it then if it happens, it can be a nice or not nice surprise. Some promises are easy to keep. I promise to drive you to town. I promise to mow the lawn. I promise to always do the right thing when I’m with my horse. Now the last one is a challenge to say the least. It would be a very noble and amazing feat to keep that promise.

If a horse is hard to catch, I will hear people say they chased him into a round pen using their quad or some other way then round penned him. Then they say he is still hard to catch even in the round pen. Hmmm, I wonder why? What does round penned it mean anyway? I have a round pen but it’s never been used to get a horse want to be caught. Why doesn’t he want to be caught is the question. The answer is he doesn’t like people or maybe, more to the point, it’s just that person he doesn’t like. The cure is to be the person that horses like. Chasing them around doesn’t make them like us. If you would like to have more friends don’t chase them into a round pen with your quad and then chase them some more around the pen.

I don’t think its possible to always do the right thing. You have to know what the right thing is for every horse in every moment then have the skill to get it done. I do, however, believe that we can become much better at doing the right thing and improve ourselves each day. I also believe that with self-discipline, knowledge and skill we can do the right thing most of the time but we are going to make some mistakes once in awhile.

If a horse goes into a trailer, it doesn’t necessarily mean their ready to even have the door closed behind them let alone be hauled anywhere. We need to read what the horse is saying and work towards build I work at keeping three prom- his confidence, respect and unises when I work with my hors- derstanding.

We personally have to have confidence, respect and understanding to be able to help the horse with theirs. If your horse pulls back when tied or when you are handling him, you have to answer the “why” first. Remember, it is the release that teaches the horse. So, do you release for the wrong things at the wrong time making or teaching by accident the very things you don’t want? When you ask your horse forward on a line and his head goes up, or when you get to the trailer and he pulls you across the yard or rears up, do you usually release all pressure from the horse making it comfortable for him to do the wrong thing? Instead, you should make the wrong thing uncomfortable and the right thing comfortable. If I had a dollar for every time I have seen people release the pressure and make the wrong thing easy for the horse, I would have a nice place in Costa Rica on the beach. If I read the situation incorrectly and/or release for the wrong things at the wrong time, and I do it regularly, I’m promising through consistency to my horse, he can keep doing what it is he’s doing, and I will make it comfortable for him to continue doing it. Whatever we do consistently with a horse is our

31

way of promising them everything is okay. They don’t speak English, so our way of doing things becomes our promise to the horse. If we change for a better way, we need to keep the new promise for a while, maybe a long while, before they will trust in the new promise. If we slip back to the old way and release for the wrong thing, or read the situation incorrectly, or trailer them when they are not prepared then we lose what we were gaining. Therefore, we would be causing them to be less confident, respectful and understanding. Make some good promises to your horse. Keep those promises as much as you possibly know how and then be ready to be amazed at the horse that shows up. Getting down the trail. Grazing stubble fields “Cows will pick and choose what they eat from the straw, chaff, weed seeds in the stubble, slough hay from the low areas and mature hay growing along the fences and headlands,” says Barry Yaremcio, beef and forage specialist at the Alberta AgInfo Centre. “Quality of what they eat can be variable depending on the type of crop grown, fertility program and stage of maturity when the crop was cut or harvested. The combine setting - the amount of light grain and weed seeds thrown out onto the ground - will also impact what the cows eat.”

Straw, chaff and over-mature grass hays are typically low in protein, energy, calcium and magnesium, but relatively high in phosphorus. These feeds are also high in neutral detergent fibre, which can reduce total feed intake, and relatively high in phosphorus. Grains and weed seeds are also high in phosphorus and have higher energy and protein content than the grasses, straw and chaff. He notes that cow-calf pairs turned onto stubble fields have different mineral supplementation needs than when they were on a mixed alfalfa-grass pasture. The lack of calcium and

magnesium in the straw and forages can cause two problems. “A diet that is low in calcium and higher in phosphorus can reduce phosphorus absorption,” explains Yaremcio. “Phosphorus is the driver of all metabolic functions. When it is not absorbed, feed intake is reduced. That in turn reduces milk production and weight gain on the calves. Cows can also start to lose weight. A continuous imbalance can impair reproductive performance, with cows taking longer to cycle and conceive a calf next year.” “A calcium or magnesium deficiency can cause cows to go down. Winter tetany and milk fever can also occur. It generally requires a veterinarian to treat animals in this situation,” he adds. A mineral supplementation program should contain additional calcium and magnesium, but Yaremcio says that a 2:1 mineral does not provide enough calcium to remedy the situation. He adds that a feedlot mineral with a 3:1 or 4:1 calcium to phosphorus ratio is preferred. Yaremcio says that supplementing protein on pasture can be troublesome, but protein tubs or blocks will help solve

the problem as long as mineral and vitamin supplementation continues as described. Other options include feeding 3 to 4 lb of grain every third day along with a protein supplement or putting dry cows onto these fields to reduce protein requirements. He adds that when the cow energy and protein requirements are not met, milk production is reduced, cow weight loss is possible and calf gains will decline. “To offset the loss of calf performance, creep feeding the calves with a ration that is between 14 and 16% protein will improve average daily gains. If feeding straight oats, which has 10 to 11% protein on average, the calves will put down fat rather than lean growth. They may not frame out properly, resulting in a calf that could be discounted at auction. A mixture of 1/3 peas and 2/3 oats or barley by weight will provide a creep ration that meets protein and energy requirements. With lower grain prices and high calf prices creep feeding will pay very well in the long run.”

Alberta Beef Producers talk budget Alberta Beef Producers (ABP) attended the introduction of the Alberta Budget 2019 on October 24. Travis Toews, President of Treasury Board and Minister of Finance presented a reasonable budget for the fiscal position facing the Alberta government, strategically allocating expenditures and taking a measured approach to spending reductions. We were disappointed to see a 9.1% reduction in the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry expenses this year, but understand the fiscal constraints under which the government is operating. We hope the Ministry will be able to maintain the effective programs and services that make our industry more competitive. Cattle and beef producers will be pleased to see the commitment to hiring 50 new prosecutors and supporting programs to reduce

Meaningful consultation with producers and industry on research priorities and direction will make research more effective and worthwhile for producers, but we are concerned that savings will be found through reduced investment in research projects and infrastructure. Investments in research and development are critical to enhancing the competitiveness of our industry. Producers and industry are prepared to make

Safe grain storage after a tough harvest It has been a difficult and stuttering harvest this year with short periods of combining between showers and cool temperatures. “You might breathe a sign of relief when harvesting is complete, but it really isn’t done until the grain ends up at the buyer’s and is paid for,” says Harry Brook, crop specialist at the Alberta Ag-Info Centre. “Maintain vigilance when the crop is in the bin. A lot of this year’s crop is not totally dry and will need aeration or drying before selling. “ He says that storing the crop

Cold air outside will cool the grain against the bin sides and moisture will move down the outsides of the bin the come up the middle. “If there is any place for the moisture to accumulate, it will be just below the top and middle of the bin.” Green seed or immature seed in the bin may also contain more moisture and add to the problem. “This is why it is imperative when harvesting immature grain to keep it cool. If moisture does move and centralize in the bin, it starts to heat and that attracts grain beetles.” “Cool, wet harvesting conditions are potential ingredients to cause storage problems,” Brook adds. “You have spent a lot of money and time getting the harvest in the bin. Take the time to monitor the stored grain condition and keep the bins cool. Don’t get an unpleasant surprise when selling the grain with discounts for heated grain or insect problems.”

If you are looking to attend Remembrance Day ceremonies at Unchagah Hall, you can forget it. The facility will not be ready in time from construction and interior improvements. “The day of programming will be at Mercer Hall,” says Day Roberts noting beyond the location, frequent attendees of the long standing tradition should expect to see no changes. Day notes the Unchagah Hall had been a steadfast location after the decision was made to move a bulk of the Nov. 11 ceremony indoors instead of in front of the Dawson Creek cenotaph, now approximately 15 years ago. Mercer Hall is located in the rear of the Encana Events Centre, next to the Borek Pool entrance.

Glenn Stewart has been a Peace region resident his entire life. Born in Fort St. John, growing up on a cattle farm in Baldonnel, BC. Post-harvest nutrient management “Soil testing in the fall, rather than in the spring, gives more time for collecting samples and planning fertilizer programs,” says Mark Cutts, crop specialist at the Alberta Ag-Info Centre. “It also allows producers to take advantage of lower fall fertilizer prices, and reduces spring workload.” Soil sample collection can occur once soil temperatures are below 7 C. “Waiting until soil temperatures are cooler means soil nutrient levels determined in the fall should closely reflect spring nutrient levels,” he adds. Cutts says that it is important to ensure sample collection occurs in a consistent manner from representative areas of the field. “For example, if there are small areas of poorly drained low spots in a field, these areas should not be included in the sample collection. The non-representative areas can be sampled separately to determine their fertility status.” Sampling at the appropriate depths is also important. Recommended sampling depths are 0 to 15 cm, 15 to 30 cm and 30 to 60 cm. “The 0 to 15 cm depth will capture crop available soil phosphorous and potassium. However, for mobile nutrients such as nitrate nitrogen and

sulphate, sampling to a depth of 60 cm gives a more reliable measure of the amount present in the soil profile.” Applying fertilizer in the fall is another practice that producers may want to consider. “The most common method for applying fall fertilizer is to band nitrogen either as urea (46-0-0) or anhydrous ammonia (82-0-0),” he says “Since nitrogen makes up the biggest volume of applied fertilizer, a fall application will enhance efficiencies during spring seeding. Fall nitrogen fertilizer applications can be made once soil temperatures are below 7 C.” Applying urea or anhydrous ammonia fertilizer at cooler soil temperatures will help maintain nitrogen in the ammonium (NH4+) form. “The ammonium form of nitrogen is preferred as it is protected from denitrification or leaching losses,” he adds. “However, there is no real advantage to a fall application of seed-placed plant nutrients such as phosphorus and potassium.” “Ultimately, by evaluating soil nutrient levels and applying nitrogen fertilizer in the fall, producers can gain efficiencies in time management and cost of production.”

Prepping your livestock to move An enjoyable and pretty picture to watch is livestock being moved from point A to point B in a serene and relaxed manner with the livestock giving deference to the dog. This tranquil scene does not happen without some prior groundwork that creates equal respect between the livestock and dog. As the dog goes to the stocks

head the stock should change direction and continue to move forward with no fuss. This happens when the livestock have been worked with a dog and taught to give and move away from the dog. A dog needs to be able to have the authority to teach the they please. stock that they need to move away from the Livestock very seldom initially move dog and not continue on in the direction away from the dog when the dog goes to their heads to change the stocks direction. KITCHEN CABINETS • BATHROOM CABINETS • GARDEN CENTRE • The first reaction from the stock is usually to chase the dog or run over top of it and carry on in the direction they choose. This is where a bite is invaluable, as a nip on the nose, soon teaches the stock that the dog is a force to be reckoned with and it is simpler to change direction than challenge the dog. Once the stock changes direction it is important that the dog stop or back off and give the stock room. The stock soon realize that if they turn and go the dog no longer hassles them and life is easy. Taking the time to teach the stock to turn and move away from the dog takes some work and time but the benefits and time it saves down the road make the time spent worthwhile. work.

Make PPE a habit and grab it Just like buckling a seatbelt before driving, reaching for PPE should be an automatic action prior to starting many jobs. “Hazards exist in many different forms on the farm workplace,” says Kenda Lubeck, farm safety coordinator with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. “Sometimes the hazards are obvious, such as a broken ladder or a rotating PTO shaft. But, what farm workers may be less likely to recognize are the hidden hazards, such as exposure to chemicals, dust or noise.” If it is not possible to eliminate a hazard with engineering solutions, or to minimize it with training and modified work practices, then reliance on PPE such as gloves, protective footwear, safety glasses, hearing protection and respirators is needed. Expect, don’t suggest It is up to managers, supervisors and parents to ensure that both new and experienced farm workers are trained in the proper use of PPE and that it is worn every time potential hazards are present. Wearing it should be an expectation of the job. “Decisions about protecting your hearing, eyesight and skin can have lifelong impacts - good or bad,” she says. “Some exposures are cumulative. For example, each exposure to loud noise increases the risk of hearing loss, and nothing can reverse

hearing loss once the damage is done. Other hazards are acute, causing damage immediately, such as chemical splashes to the eyes.” Not only should farm workers be trained when to wear PPE, but they should also be shown how to achieve a proper fit. Respirators, hearing protection, safety goggles, or helmets will not work properly if they do not fit correctly. Role modeling - a powerful motivator When it comes to young farm workers, parents and supervisors play an important role in shaping attitudes about health and safety. “Leading by example and wearing PPE yourself, will greatly influence the likelihood of youth doing the same,” she adds. “For example, when a child or youth sees someone they respect consistently wearing ear protection while mowing the lawn, they view that behavior as a necessary action to take when performing that task. This type of leadership helps build a positive culture of safety within the agriculture community that will hopefully continue for future generations.” Consistently wearing PPE will help protect workers young and old from many health risks associated with working on the farm. Make it a habit and grab it!
