Isolation is not isolated By Sarah Weiss Columnist

Something I don’t often talk about is the isolation that comes with living in a rural area. It’s funny because when you think farming community, you think close-knit, strong relationships. Friends that become more like family and warm feelings and shared meals. And there is all that, don’t get me wrong, there is a lot of that. So how can there still be isolation? It’s there because it’s hard to make time for things outside of the farm, the family and the job. It’s even harder when you throw in school, extracurricular activities and driving 45 minutes to town just for groceries! That’s 2 hours out of your day just driving to and from town. Where is the time? Where is the time for a social life? Where is the time for YOURSELF?? There is none, it seems, some days. And yeah. That’s hard. Recently at a social gathering, I ended up spilling my guts to a friend (there may have been wine involved) about how I sometimes feel very isolated here. I was surprised to learn that she felt the same way and the longer I talked with her, the more I realized that my feeling of isolation, was not in fact an isolated incident. By the time the conversation moved on I had discovered 7 women in a couple of minutes that felt the exact same way as I did. So, what do we do about it? It’s so cliché but I think there are a few things we can do. 1.) Stop being afraid to let our friends,

neighbors and peers know how we feel. If yourself out there! It usually pays off! are free to talk openly about things, I think we will be shocked at how many people can 3.) When you’re feeling isolated organize relate. something to do! We all need an outlet. A place to gather, a place to be heard and 2.) Don’t be afraid to reach out first. I seen by someone other than our children, know sometimes I find myself waiting. Wait- husband, or cows. ing for that first text or phone call. Waiting for a call or an invite, but hey we are all If you feel the same way as I do. Let’s get busy and sometimes, you just have to put together. I see you. I hear you. I am you.

What clubroot resistance to choose? By Autumn Barnes Canola growers should use clubrootresistant (CR) canola varieties. Which CR variety should you use? It depends. The long list of CR canola varieties available in Western Canada is posted and updated regularly in the “Control clubroot” section at clubroot.ca. Varieties with asterisks (**) be-side the name have CR resistance different from or in addition to the first generation re-sistance. Varieties with new sources of resistance should be used and rotated in fields where original sources have been used repeatedly on fields with high spore loads or if pathotypes are breaking the original sources of resistance. This is already happening in quite a few places across Alberta, includ-

ing Rocky View County where clubroot re-sistance. That is why keeping spore levwas just con-firmed in 2018. els low should be a top management goal. Growers can do this by following all steps We know that a clubroot infestation will in this clubroot management recipe: contain more than one pathotype and that 1. The shift in pathotype popu- crucial in the stewardship of genetic resislations can happen fairly quickly, especially tance. With a 2-year break between clubunder high spore loads. When growers see root hosts, we see a rapid decline in living evi-dence of this shift (i.e. more clubroot resting spores. even with a CR variety) it is time to grow a 3. Rotation of resistance host crops, all the genetics should stand could also be important to maintain resisup quite well, including original sources of tance efficacy. With repeated use of varieties with the same re-sistant traits under high spore loads, virulent races can multiply and effectiveness of resistant will be seriously compromised. 4. Limit activities that can introduce foreign soil or cause erosion. Minimum tillage and equipment sanitation (as simple as knocking off visible dirt before leaving a field) will greatly reduce the risk of moving infested soil around. Note that wet soil conditions increase the amount of soil that clings to equipment. 5. Control host weeds. Common weeds that can host clubroot include stinkweed, shepherd’s purse, flixweed, all mustards and volunteer canola. They need to be controlled within three weeks of emergence to prevent a new batch of spores be-ing produced. 6. Isolate field entrances and hot spots. Use patch management strategies to re-duce spore loads, such as grassing the affected area, which will also limit soil movement. Patches that are visibly worse than the remainder of your field often have billions more spores per gram of soil than elsewhere and are often the first place where clubroot resistance breaks down. Removing these hot spots from cultivation for a few extra years significantly reduces spread and risk of re-sistance breakdown. As part of this, having separate field entrances and exits could reduce the amount of infested soil leaving the field on machinery. When combined, like ingredients in a recipe, these practices will help growers to limit clubroot damage in canola, allowing for the continued success and profitability of canola production across the Prairies. Compare varieties Twelve CR varieties were included in Canola Performance Trials in 2019. You can find results in the PDF booklet posted at canolaperformancetrials.ca. If CR is the most im-portant trait, which it will be for canola growers in Alberta, growers will want to short-list their varieties for 2020 based on which ones have the CR trait. From that short list they can then pick varieties with yield, days to maturity and any other traits they’re looking for. –Autumn Barnes is an agronomy specialist with the Canola Council of Canada. New methane regulations in force in BC

57445

Silver Valley, AB • (780) 864-7559

The anticipated impact of the new regulations is a reduction in methane emissions by 10.9 megatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent over a 10-year period. Developed with input from environmental groups and industry, the new regulations address the primary sources of methane emissions from B.C.’s upstream oil and gas industry, which are: pneumatic devices; equipment leaks; compressor seals; glycol dehydrators; storage tanks; and surface casing vents.

Troy Penner

UNCLE’S CABIN BUTCHER SHOP

The BC Oil and Gas Commission is reminding industry and other stakeholders of new regulations and guidelines which took effect on Jan. 1, 2020. The commission has introduced new regulations to reduce methane emissions from upstream oil and gas operations to meet or exceed federal and provincial methane emission reduction targets, through amendments to the Drilling and Production Regulation.

2018 a record year for BC food sales

B.C. farmers, ranchers, seafood and processing workers contributed to a recordsetting year in 2018, with annual revenue from businesses in those sectors reaching $15 billion for the first time. “It was an excellent year for agriculture in British Columbia. The hard work of many has led to record results,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture. “The people who make up B.C.’s agriculture industry are hard working and dedicated, and their passion for growing, raising, harvesting and producing fresh great-tasting food and beverages is why the industry is reaching new heights.” The milestone includes increases such as a 4% rise in food processing, 6% in agriculture and 11% in seafood revenues. The number of overall sector employees in B.C. also increased to a 10-year high of 63,400 in 2018, with 2,300 more jobs than the year before. B.C. consumers and companies continue to be the main buyers of B.C. products, with an estimated $6.4 billion of purchases. B.C. also set new record in 2018 with exports of $4.5 billion — about 10% higher than in 2017. B.C. producers sent $3.1 billion worth of farm and food products and $1.4 billion worth of seafood to 149 international markets, with the United States, China and Japan as the top importers. B.C. companies also sold an estimated $4 billion worth of products in other Canadian provinces and territories. The Ministry of Agriculture began a new mandate in 2017 to support B.C. farmers through a three-pronged approach: Grow BC, which creates a network of food hubs supporting entrepreneurs and food processors around the province, and has programs to increase production and support new farmers; Feed BC, which encourages the use of B.C. products in government-operated institutions and facilities; and Buy BC, which is helping more than 200 B.C. companies promote their products in B.C., as well as developing partnerships supporting local foods in retailers. “Congratulations to all my fellow farm-

ers and ranchers for their hard work and innovation that makes British Columbia a great place to live, work and enjoy local products, said Stan Vander Waal, president, BC Agriculture Council. Christina Burridge, executive director, BC Seafood Alliance said 2018 was a great year for B.C. seafood with strong supply, strong demand and strong export prices — and that’s good news for fishing families and communities up and down the coast. “British Columbia has a first-rate reputation for safe, sustainable and healthy products from our ocean, while Buy BC is increasing domestic demand, and the Province’s international trade program is supporting exports.” Doug Cochrane, board chair, Interior Health said through the Feed BC initiative, Interior Health is working more closely with B.C. vendors to increase B.C.-grown and B.C.-processed foods at our hospitals and care facilities. “These fresh, nutritious foods support health and recovery, and this partnership reflects the strong connection between Interior Health and the communities we serve.” James Donaldson, CEO, BC Food & Beverage added the new data really underscores that B.C.’s economy is fuelled by farm, fish and food. “The export growth numbers are also exciting, as an increasing number of people around the world are getting to appreciate the amazing products that come from our province.” Heather O’Hara, executive director, BC Association of Farmers’ Markets also chimed in. “This is a great revenue milestone and affirms the growth in consumer demand and support by British Columbians for farm and food products grown and made locally in B.C. The thousands of farm and food vendors who sell direct to consumers at over 145 B.C. farmers’ markets across the province are proud of their contribution to reach this milestone in the B.C. agriculture sector,” she said.

Canadian Forage Seed Conference Enhancing the Cropping System Resiliency

By Talon Gauthier Peace Region Forage Seed Association On February 25th and 26th, 2020 forage seed growers, researchers, extension staff and agribusinesses will congregate for the first Canadian Forage Seed Conference since 2006! The conference will be hosted at the Fantasyland Hotel which is attached to the West Edmonton Mall in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The goal of this conference is to unite the industry throughout Canada and increase aware-

ness and interest in forage seed production. With the current challenges in Canadian grain markets and weather, we have a great opportunity to increase awareness of the benefits of incorporating forage seed crops into any cropping system. Perennial forage seed crops can offer these growers market diversity and dispersal of timing in terms of workload. Hence the theme of the conference being “Enhancing the Cropping System Resiliency”! For the faithful forage seed grower, it will be an opportunity to hear about new technologies in the industry and

“As 2019 draws to a close, most of the spring-born calves have been weaned,” says Ann Boyda, livestock economist with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. “Now is a good time to analyze the business to see what it costs to produce these weaned calves. The AgriProfit$ program is again helping farmers and ranchers do just that with the newly released AgriProfit$ 20142018 benchmark report.” AgriProfit$ 2014-2018 Economic, Productive and Financial Performance of Alberta Cow/Calf Operations The report provides performance indicators for the value of production, itemized variable costs – feed, veterinary and medicine, trucking, repairs, labour – and capital costs such as rent, taxes, insurance, depreciation and capital interest. It also looks at physical performance indicators relative to breeding and calving length, death losses, feed use, conception rate and calving rates along with pounds weaned per exposed cow and per winter cow. She looks at how the effect of 2018’s erratic weather – late spring, cool temperatures in summer, variation in moisture and generally wet conditions in fall – is reflected in the report. “That weather attributed to higher than the 5-year average feed costs. Calf prices reportedly fluctuated over the year from $187 per cwt early in the year, to over $175.60 per cwt mid-year and finishing around $180.49 per cwt. The 2018 prices were slightly lower than that of 2017 but stronger that the lows of 2016. As a result, margins tighten to 41 cents per lb and net returns at 17 cents per lb.” She adds that changes in feed strategies were evident with winter feed use seeing a drop to 3.5 tonne as fed per cow, 12.5% lower than the 5-year average. “Pasture costs increased to compensate, and further investigation is warranted to determine the nature of the change in practices.” “As well,” she adds, “current ratios – current assets to current liabilities – show a downward trend. It is still healthy but diminishing. The 2018 current ratio of 2.67 was down from 2017 and lower than the 5-year average. This may reflect adjustment of practices to use cash more efficiently as ratios higher than 1.5 indicates that the farm is technically liquid. In addition, a slightly higher debt-to-asset ratio of 0.13 is reported for 2018. Although a ratio of less than .25 is considered strong and solvent, the increase in liabilities is evident in higher capital interest expenses.” “So,” she asks, “what will the 2019 benchmarks show? Many participants are now busily gathering their financial and production records and reflecting on the information. They are also looking to yearover-year comparisons to see if they are on the right track. You too can be included in the next benchmark results by enroling in AgriProfit$.” Sign up for AgriProfits AgriProfit$ provides customized farm business analysis at no charge to Alberta producers. Smaller ranches dominant the South West portion of the province, whereas the larger ranches are located typically in the Northern and Interior regions. The majority of calves raised in BC are marketed in the fall via live auctions to feedlots in Alberta and the US where they will be fed a grain diet and brought up to slaughter weight. Beef and veal exports up in 2019 Exports to Mexico also grew The latest numbers from Agriculture and Agri-Food by seven per cent, reaching Canada and Statistics Cana- 11,915 tonnes this year. da show that beef and veal exports grew significantly Despite China’s four-month in 2019. ban on Canadian pork and beef

As of September 30, Canada had exported a total of 330,757 tonnes of beef and veal, compared to 294,527 in the same period last year, a growth of 12 per cent. The dollar value of those exports is 21 per cent higher than the same period in 2018. Much of that growth has been driven by major trading partners. Canada’s exports to the U.S. hit 239,231 tonnes on September 30, which is eight per cent higher than last year. Exports to Japan saw a 59 per cent increase, from 23,712 tonnes as of September 30, 2018, to 37,652 tonnes this year. Both markets saw significant growth in the dollar value of exports as well.

exports, beef and veal exports were up 103 per cent to the end of the third quarter this year. Canadian exports reached 11,475 tonnes, at a value of $98,412,000 on September 30. Those gains came before the ban was applied in late June. Overall, exports to the EU more than doubled this year. Canada had exported a total of 1,165 tonnes of beef and veal to the EU over the first nine months of 2019, compared to 501 tonnes the previous year. Those 2019 exports were valued at $16,099,000, compared to $8,164,000 the previous year. The U.K. was the biggest importer of Canadian beef and veal, importing 849 tonnes as of September 30, versus 170 over the same period last year.

SEED FOR THOUGHT To plant peas or not to plant peas? A question many farmers are asking this year. Disease and moisture have been an issue, but peas are profitable. We rely on treatment, variety and rotation. Three factors of pulse production we can control. Treat. Take a naked, shivering seed and stick it in cold wet soil – that is just asking for pathogens, fungus and insects to march right up and attack. Seed treated with fungicides and (if needed) insecticides at least has a little bit of defensive armour. 21-28 days of protection at the most vulnerable stage, and support for that little seedling when it needs it most. Pea weevils have been migrating northwards for the last few years, so insecticide is a good addition.

Peas are first in, first off, and usually dry to combine. Add the nitrogen fixation and they are the most profitable commodity on our farm. We choose varieties that stand, harvest and yield better than many. Changing our varieties helps - we think different resistance packages slows down disease progression.

Zero-Tilling and Cover Crops in the Peace Country Charissa Enns Creek Bank Farms Change is inevitable. We all know that, but the unfamiliar is new territory and while that can be exciting, it is also unnerving. For many producers in the agriculture industry, 2019 has been one of the toughest years on record. In some places, as much as 75% of crops remain in the field. While the majority of the Peace region may not be that serious, those with crops in the field are still wondering, what are we going to do with this in 2020? Changing practices seems like a major risk, especially after such a difficult season, but according to Dr. Dwayne Beck (2019) with South Dakota State University’s Dakota Lake Farms, “The light bulb did not result by incrementally making candles better.” Rather than making small, progressive changes to a way of farming to provide a more sustainable future in agriculture, Dr. Beck is an advocate for looking at an entirely new way of farming that requires us to treat our land as an ecosystem (2019). Holding water rather than allowing runoff to occur is just a small part of the picture, but it is an important one. At a time when extreme weather patterns seem to be the norm, it is important to look at ways of building security and increasing stability. Regenerative agriculture, as broad and complex as the topic is, has unlimited potential for what might work in this area, but it will take a great deal of time and effort to understand the whole picture of what is really going on with our soil biology. With more organisms in a single teaspoon of healthy soil than there are people on the planet (James Hutton Institute, n.d.), there is a lot going on… In fact, with that teaspoon being comprised of approximately 75,000 different species of bacteria and 75% of the weight of that soil comprised of fungi, each of which have unique roles and needs (Ingham, 2016), the diversity of life beneath our feet is mind-boggling. The question of how to improve the biology in such an unbelievably complex system is beyond the scope of what we might talk about in this small space, but the starting point many regenerative agriculture proponents suggest is to eliminate soil disturbance as much as possible to protect the soil resource. All tillage tools, according to Dr. Beck, “Destroy soil structure, decrease water infiltration, reduce organic matter and increase weeds” (2019). For many producers in the Peace country, this statement has significant implications as it suggests a dramatic shift in practices in order to better our livelihood. Dr. Beck (2019) goes on to state that if we want to improve the ground we depend upon, leaving residue on the soil at all times allows the soil biology to thrive. Dr. Elaine Ingham (2016) adds, “Mother nature abhors bare soil.” Despite the unusually wet season, it is important to remember that the Peace region is all too familiar with drought conditions. In fact, Environment Canada’s historical weather reports for Fort. St. John indicate that before June 23, 2019, the area had received very little rain. At that time, many farmers in the area were bracing themselves for a drought season. Drought may seem far from our minds right now, but the Peace region climate has proven itself unpredictable over and over again. If choosing different farming practices has the potential to offer more stability in an unstable environment, it is certainly worth taking a closer look. Our operation has been zero-tilling for nearly 15 years and in the last four to five years, the changes are, “Quite dramatic. The only tillage tool that touches the ground are our drills and for the last few years the changes have become very obvious. In the past, the determining factor for the timing of our seeding was if the clay soil would smear, we can now seed into ground that is wet enough a pickup in 2-wheel drive will go nowhere in the field. Now, the determining factor is if the quad-trac tractor

will pull the drill. The current norm for us is to seed canola, for instance, at no more than ¼” depth and we are always seeding into good moisture,” says Walter Enns. As Dr. Christine Jones suggests, producers using regenerative agriculture practices in areas that experience significant drought periods have found time and again that a diverse cover crop of ten or more different species of plants with high levels of residue on the soil show no signs of drought while areas directly beside are severely damaged (2018). Extreme weather patterns do seem to become less of an issue for zero-till practices that allow the soil biology to thrive. Zero-till practices may offer producers an advantage in many ways, but Enns warns that, “It’s not the silver bullet that solves every problem.” This year, for instance, Enns believes that, “The high levels of residue decomposing from continuous high-moisture conditions fed the crop more nitrogen than normal, resulting in lodging early in the growing season that delayed plant development and made for a later harvest for us in comparison to our neighbors.” Enns goes on to say, however, that he is very reluctant to till the ground because of the benefits he has seen over the last number of years. Soil health and the regenerative agriculture movement has become increasingly popular in recent years, but it is a multifaceted and highly complex topic that seems impossible to put together a complete picture of what really goes on in the soil biology. While producers such as Gabe Brown, for instance, have achieved incredible results with cover crops and a major change in practices, it goes without saying that what works in North Dakota does not necessarily work in the Peace Country’s short growing season. On our farm, it is hoped that 2020 will offer the chance to learn more about how regenerative agriculture principles can be applied to farmland in the Peace Region. In the coming spring, trials are currently being planned on unharvested grain acres. One plan being considered is to broadcast a cover crop mixture followed by a roller-crimper or coulter bar to break up the straw and boost aerobic activity to feed soil biology. It is hoped that this will cause seeds from previous years to come in contact with the soil and grow until August, when tillage radishes will be seeded to help break up any potential hard-pan layers. There is a great deal to learn in years to come about regenerative agriculture and at this point, it is likely that a large library could be filled with books containing scientific evidence, statistics and information on soil health. For those who are interested in exploring the world of soil health and regenerative agriculture, the volume of information can be daunting to say the least. Several recommended resources to start are shared below, but this list is far from comprehensive. We face very different challenges from other areas, but if we start to think critically about why we operate in our current style while being open to new ideas, the possibilities are endless. Know about the BC Grain Producers Association The purpose of the BC Grain Producers Association (BCGPA) is to improve the viability of the grains and oilseed industry in the BC Peace River Region. The Association and its members maintain sustained liaisons with other agencies to benefit the field crop industry. The BCGPA encourages all farmers to participate within their industry so that their voices may be heard. The BC Grain Producers Association is comprised of grain and oilseed producers, from British Columbia. The Association represents farmers from all over the province, with the

bulk of our members located in the Peace Region, in Northeastern BC. Our members are represented by an elected 8 person board. In addition to representing the interests of BC producers on local, provincial and federal levels, the Association also has a research department where grains and oilseeds are grown on two research farms in Northern BC. This research allows for new crop varieties to be strategically tested in a northern climate to allow for successful adaptation to a short-growing season.

10 Reasons to Grow Pulses Whether you’ve never grown pulses or haven’t grown them in a while, we’ve got 10 good reasons why you should think about growing pulses. 1. Pulses reduce your input costs. Pulses fix their own nitrogen, so there’s no need for the added cost of nitrogen for your crop. 2. Pulses spread your workload. The growing season for pulse crops differs somewhat from that of other crops, in some cases allowing you to seed and harvest earlier or later than other crops. 3. Pulses give you diversified marketing options. You can grow pulses for export or domestic use for the human consumption, animal feed, or fractionation markets. 4. Pulses break disease cycles in your field. A four-year crop rotation that incorporates pulses can reduce incidences of disease in your fields. 5. Pulses provide a second-year yield boost. Studies have shown that higher yields and quality of canola (15-96 per cent increase in yield) and cereals (41-52 per cent increase in barley yields, 20-47 per cent increase in wheat yields) can be seen in the year following pulse crops. 6. Pulses grow in a variety of production systems. You have a lot of options when it comes to growing pulses, as they can be seeded with a variety of equipment and grow in both conventional and zero till systems under irrigation or on dry land.

Need that Go-To Place for Fleet Work? No Wait Times! In and Out Quickly!

7. Pulses are profitable. Prices for pulse crops are very competitive with other crop types, and reduced input costs help contribute to a healthy bottom line. 8. Pulses improve your soil tilth. Pulses make your soil healthier by putting nutrients, including nitrogen, back into the soil.

• Automotive painting • Frame straightening • Fibreglass repairs

9. Pulses promote soil conservation and sustainable farming practices. Crops like pulses that fix nitrogen can help reduce CO2 emissions from agriculture, and because of their water use efficiency and ability to grow in zero till systems, pulses may have a lower environmental footprint than other crop types.

• Over height vehicles • Boats • Recreational vehicles • and much more

10. Pulses are an up-and-coming crop type that grows every year. Pulse acres in Alberta have hit the 2.4 million mark and continue to grow. With increased acres come increased marketing options, making pulses an up-and-coming crop type with plenty of room to grow. Any way you look at it, pulses are good for your farm.

“Relationships take time and effort to develop,” says Robert Spencer, commercial horticulture specialist at the Alberta Ag-Info Centre. “Relationships are founded on trust, shared experiences, common interests and mutual needs.” “Throughout the growing and harvest season, whether it is 3 weeks or 6 months long, producers spend a significant amount of time building and refining relationships with their customers. It happens with every transaction and every market interaction and contact. Those who sell to wholesalers or other markets may connect less frequently, but those interactions are no less important.” In-season contact might include a face-to-face conversation, social media updates, a phone call between buyer and seller, daily/weekly/monthly emails or newsletter updates on crop status, or any number of other forms of contact. In some – if not many – cases, contact between producers and their customers might only happen once a year, maybe less. “To state the obvious,” he adds, “the longer the time between meaningful contact, the more likely the relationship will erode or be lost, and the less likely it is that the customer will remember the producer. This leads to the question – how

can producers keep their business anchored in the memory of their customers, particularly in situations where contact is extremely limited?” While face-to-face and direct, involved contact may be ideal and preferred, Spencer says that can be fairly challenging to accomplish in the off-season. “Realistically, it does not have to be that deep or involved, but there needs to be some reminder, where appropriate. Too much contact can move you from a preferred producer to stalker quickly, so balance is important.” Off-season contact can include: periodic social media updates pop-up winter markets/farm stands seasonal events regular emails or newsletters with stories about you and your farm future planning calls or emails with an outline of projected production plans for the coming season He adds that a big part of maintaining contact in the offseason will be in those contact networks or mechanisms cultivated during the growing season. “Set things up so you can stay in touch with your customers’ permission, of course.”

part these deaths can be prevented. If a vehicle is moving call the dog and have it lie down until the vehicle is past and the dog can safely move without getting in the way. If the dog is on a flat deck or unrestrained, a portable kennel is easily transferred and tied down. The dog can be contained safely while still being handy and ready to help quickly when needed. We do not go out and buy a horse or bull and put them in harms way, so it should be no different for a dog. They need to be kept in a safe situation both when they are working and while they are loose. A handler who is aware of the dog and his safety will do a much better job at keeping the dog alive than the handler who is unmindful of where and what the dog is doing at all times. A good working dog is a valuable investment in both time and money to say nothing of being difficult to replace and so should be treated with care and attentiveness. It is in the handlers best interest to keep the dog alive, healthy and ready to work.

working dog, especially the border collie, has no sense of self-preservation when it comes to dangerous situations. They are oblivious to surrounding danger and so it becomes the handlers job to prevent them getting into situations that are potentially hazardous to them. This may seem like an imposition to the handler but the border collie does not safeguard himself, so the onus falls to the handler. The most frequent cause of death is any type of moving vehicle such as a truck, tractor, quad, sled and the list goes on. These can endanger the dog in any number of ways: A dog can be moving stock down a road and dart out in front of an oncoming vehicle. They may be running loose around a motorized source of transportation and duck in front while giving the driver no time to get stopped. Dogs may be riding on a platform such as wagons, backs of trucks or tractor floors and for who knows what reason, they suddenly jump off and get run over before the driver sees what happens and comes to a halt. Often the largest toll is to the dogs who are loose and get run over as vehicles enter the yard. When people are driving they often assume the dog will naturally move out of the way. While this is true for a lot of dogs the collies are notoriously dumb in this instance, as they don’t sense the hazard to themselves and are oblivious to the surrounding danger that often results in their death. With a bit of forethought on the handlers

Canada’s Ministers of Agriculture advance improvements to business risk

Federal, provincial, and territorial (FPT) Ministers of Agriculture met face-to-face for the second time this year to initiate action on a number of key proposals to improve support to Canadian producers. This meeting follows what has been a difficult year for many producers, mainly related to bad weather, the CN work stoppage, and market access issues. Ministers recognized that the risks facing producers have changed, particularly with respect to climate and international trade, and that current programs may need to evolve to meet their needs. To start to address these changing risks, Ministers made targeted improvements to the AgriStability program. Ministers asked officials to change the treatment of private insurance for the 2020 program year. In addition, understanding that administrative burden is an issue for many, in particular for smaller producers, Ministers agreed to launch a pilot in select jurisdictions to make applying for support easier, by using tax return information to simplify the application process. Ministers’ engagement on key business risk management programs signaled a direct response to the changing risks faced by producers. The business risk management programs aim to provide producers with tools to ensure

the viability of their operations and to manage risks largely beyond their control. Officials are to report back to Ministers in April on an assessment of the business risk management programs to ensure they are aligned with their intended objectives. In addition, officials are to develop options to make the programs more effective, agile, timely, and equitable for producers. In particular, officials are to evaluate the impact of changes to the reference margin limit and changes to eligible expenses under AgriStability. Ministers also took the opportunity to advance other priorities in the agriculture sector. They reviewed FPT-industry work on prevention, preparedness, response and recovery planning to African swine fever (ASF), which is a shared responsibility. Ministers agreed on the importance of strong biosecurity protocols to prevent ASF from entering Canada. Since the Ministers’ last meeting in July, Canada has signed zoning agreements with the U.S. and the EU and continues to engage other trading partners to allow for trade to continue in the event of an outbreak. Ministers agreed to build on the progress made at this meeting and look ahead to their next annual conference in Guelph, Ontario, in July 2020.

With the little blue pill’s Patent About to Expire, a New Sex Pill Takes the Spotlight

A patented pill costing less than $1 a dose stands to help millions of men with failing sex lives; no prescription will be required For Immediate Release TORONTO - A new intimacy pill is set to take the spotlight with the little blue pill’s patent about to expire. But unlike the former, it won’t require a prescription and is priced just under a $1 a dose. Sold under the brand name Vesele, The new pill is part of a new class of performance enhancers for men, which work on the body and mind, supporting increased blood flow throughout the body, including the groin. This leads to some men experiencing harder, firmer erections. Formulated with a special compound known as an “accelerator”, Vesele can transport its active ingredients faster and more efficiently into the blood stream, where it really starts to work. The patented ingredient blend initiates a process known as vasodilation, which causes arteries and vessels through the body to expand. This allows more blood to flow to the entire body, including the penis and genitals and may result in harder erections which last longer. But what makes Vesele so remarkable, and what these other intimacy pills can’t do, is that a small portion of this blood flows to the brain. With less stress of performance and more confidence, this may lead to feelings of intense arousal. In laymen’s terms, users may become incredibly excited and turned on when taken over time.

“Most of the research and treatment methods for men’s sexual failures have focused on physiological factors and have neglected the emotional ones. For the leading sex drugs to work, like Cialis and Viagra, you need visual stimulation” explains Dr. Henry Esber Ph.D, the co-creator of Vesele.

They were also easily turned on. Their moods were more upbeat and positive, too.

This is what makes Vesele so different and effective. It supplies the blood stream with nitric oxide which cause arteries to relax. The patented accelerator speeds up this process even more.

Supporting Canada’s supply-managed sectors

The Government of Canada has committed to full and fair support for supply-managed sectors following the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). $345 million will be paid in the first year, in the form of direct payments under the Dairy Direct Payment Program, and will benefit all dairy producers in proportion to their quota held. The intent is to mandate the Canadian Dairy Commission to make these payments. The

federal government will continue to work with the Dairy Farmers of Canada to determine terms and conditions for future years. The $1.75 billion made available would be in addition to the $250 million Dairy Farm Investment Program that already benefits more than 3,300 dairy producers across the country. This amounts to a total of $2 billion in federal support to dairy producers. The Government of Canada remains

committed to support the supplymanaged sectors. Further details of the up to $3.9 billion allocated in Budget 2019 will be shared in due course. To be eligible, Canadian licensed cow’s milk producers must own a valid dairy license and own milk quota and be registered with a provincial milk marketing board.
