Phosphorus 101: The basic BMPs
Breakfast Brief HOW SOON WILL CHINA RECOVER FROM CORONAVIRUS EPIDEMIC? (FarmLead.com, February 14, 2020) Grain markets are mixed as a re-ignition of the coronavirus spreading in China is renewing uncertainties of economic activities. In Canadian grain markets, concerns are mounting over CN’s railways have been virtually shut down due to pipeline protests, despite the large majority of Canadians and indigenous groups in support of said pipelines. With the law not being enforced to clear these blockades, there is undoubtedly an absence of leadership from the Canadian federal government that is negatively affecting more Canadians every day.
By Warren Ward Phosphorus soil tests are fairly low for some fields and unless fertilizer rates are high enough to match crop removal, this will start to affect yield potential. Here are the basic best management practices for phosphorus fertilizer.
Yesterday, headlines around the world talked about the spike in the number of cases of people diagnosed with the coronavirus in China to nearly 60,000 and more than 1,300 who have passed away from it.With Monday being a holiday and grain markets closed (as well as no Breakfast Brief ), trading may be a bit volatile ahead of the three-day weekend. Also, Tuesday’s February WASDE report now seems to be already forgotten by grain markets. What’s not lost on me though is that, despite all the swirling factors, grain trade must continue. That said, while cash grain trade is very much done person-to-person, the business behind each person is a close second element that people consider. In line with that thinking, in our most recent update of Combyne, our next-generation cash grain marketplace, we’ve added a Business page.
Use the right soil test
This is a page that helps showcase the type of business or farm operation you run and your Connections can now see this, in addition to your personal profile. If you put up a Listing on the public marketplace, people that you’re not yet connected with can see what sort of operation you run, what grain you buy or sell, etc. etc. You can easily create your business page my clicking on the My Profile link (top right on the Combyne website where your name is shown, or bottom left icon on the Combyne mobile app).
The Olsen test is effective across a wide range of soils, including the high pH calcareous soils common in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, while the Bray test is effective only in neutral to lower pH, non-calcareous soil as are found in parts of Alberta and Saskatchewan. Kelowna and modified Kelowna tests are also considered effective in the pH range on most of the soils in the Northern Great Plains.
India Buying Less Pulses? The chairman of the India Pulses and Grain Association was quoted recently as saying that India’s imports of pulses in the 2020/21 crop year could drop by 60% from 2019/20 volumes. The reason behind the shift is, once again, government intervention as India’s leaders work on trying to maintain strong domestic prices and boost domestic production. Expectations for the 2019/20 rabi winter crop in India are quite strong, including the chickpeas harvest, which should top last year’s output of 10.13 MMT. Given that yellow peas are often imported as a substitute for chickpeas, it could intuitively put a damper on prices for these pulses a year from now. Of course, at face value, this isn’t especially positive for those thinking about putting in peas, lentils, or chickpeas for the upcoming growing season. As a reminder, Agriculture Canada said in their first forecast of acres for Plant 2020 a few weeks ago that the area planted into pulses will be little changed compared to Plant 2019. Quite literally, AAFC is expecting lentil acres in Canada to be the same as last year at 3.78M, Canadian pea area might increase by 5,000 acres to 4.34M, and chickpeas will fall by 96,000 acres to 297,000 (albeit that’s still 16% above the five-year average).
Think about the right rate Canola takes up 1.25 to 1.5 pounds of phosphate for each bushel, and about one pound per bushel is removed in the seed. Soybeans remove about 0.85 pounds of phosphate per bushel. Peas are 0.68 pounds per bushel, wheat is 0.59 and barley is 0.43. Corn is also fairly low, at 0.44 pounds per bushel of yield, but with its high yields, the actual amount removed is higher than most other crops.
All things being equal, India has no consistent track record when it comes to farm policies, something that Saskatchewan’s agriculture minister, David Marit, called on India to improve at the Pulses Conclave conference in New Dehli this week. The President of the Global Pulses Confederation, Cindy Brown, echoed this sentiment but also mentioned that net-exporters of pulses have found new markets, noting the increase in the buying of pulses by China, Bangladesh, and others.Nonetheless, India remains the largest consumer of pulses in the world with annual demand topping 26 MMT and that’s hard to ignore if you’re a grower, exporter, or importer.
China Dealing with Tough Coronavirus Logistics In yesterday’s USDA grain exports report, we learned that a little more than 69,000 MT, or about one boat load, of U.S. soybeans headed for China. That’s the lowest volume of weekly shipments to China since mid-April 2019 as the slowdown in demand in the People’s Republic is becoming quite evident.Total soybean sales though came in at 651,100 MT, at the bottom end of pre-report expectations.Despite this, soybean prices were the leader of grain markets yesterday, with the March 2020 contract touching the $9 USD/bushel handle before closing just above $8.96. Given the net-short position of money managers, any sign of more soybean exports sales could catalyze a solid rally for soybean prices.
Farmers tend to follow one of these three philosophies when it comes to P fertilizer rates: Sufficiency approach. Apply just enough to meet the bare minimum for yield, with the crop taking up the rest of what it needs from soil reserves. This can maximize net return from fertilizer in the year of application but will drain soil reserves. Once soil reserves are medium to low, as shown in a soil test, this approach will hurt yields and profitability.
Coming back to China though, we know that there are some ships that are being diverted to ports in other parts of Asia instead of their original destinations around China. This is a clear indication of the domino effect of quieter consumer demand in China. More succinctly, with workers and consumer being told to stay home across China, this slows down grocery store and/or restaurant trips, meaning that meat is in less demand. Therein, meat has to stay refrigerated somewhere and that somewhere is the port. Thus, with no additional storage space, the USA Poultry & Egg Export Council says that boats of refrigerated chicken are docking instead at ports in Vietnam, Hong Kong, South Korea, and Taiwan instead. The obvious macro threat we’re looking at is how China will be able to meet its targeted purchase of U.S. agricultural products, as agreed to in the Phase One trade deal signed one month ago. Foreign Policy magazine suggests that China could easily back away from their commitments, especially in energy and agriculture, due to the coronavirus quarantines weakening consumer demand. As a result, cities of millions of people have become de facto ghost towns, as this Getty Images photo of DongsiShitiao crossroad in Beijing from earlier this week suggests! Nonetheless, China is planning to cut existing tariffs on $75 Billion of U.S. goods by half in order to comply with another component of their side of the Phase One deal.
Continued on page 6
Ultimately, the implementation of the Phase One trade deal between China and U.S. was set to take effect 30 days after the signing on January 15th, 2020. Today is that day number 30 and that might be why soybean prices found some strength yesterday as traders get optimistic of increased purchases going forward. However, we also know that China is selling off some of its reserves – including 1.32 MMT of corn yesterday – to feed processing firms to ensure availability of raw grains to mill. The bottom line though is that the ongoing spread of the coronavirus in China will continue to complicate any excitement over the Phase One trade deal, effectively maintaining a murky crystal ball for grain markets for the next couple of weeks.

continued from page 4: phosphorus BMPs Removal approach. This aims to match application rate to expected crop removal based on yield targets. This will not build soil P amounts but should not reduce them either. Build and Maintenance approach. Apply fertilizer P at rates in excess of crop removal to slowly increase soil P levels to an adequate level. Even for soil with high levels of phosphate, Alberta-based soil fertility expert Ross McKenzie recommends 15 lb./ac. of seed-placed phosphate for the pop-up benefit. However, once soil P levels are very high, he says phosphate fertilizer is not needed. Most phosphate fertilizer products will do the job. Whether monoammonium phosphate (11-52-0/12-51-0) or liquid polyphosphate (10-34-0), the key is to apply enough to match crop removal or, as a short-term alternative, meet the sufficiency requirement. If applying manure… A 40-ton-per-acre application of feedlot manure can provide about 600 lb./ac. of phosphate. Swine and poultry manure will have higher concentrations, and phosphorus and nitrogen can be in almost equal parts. Test manures to avoid over-application of phosphate. Soil with manure applications may not require P fertilizer (or potassium, sulphur and micronutrients) for five years or more depending on application rates and type of manure applied. Seed-placed rates that exceed 15-20 lb./ac. of phosphate can start to reduce plant counts. Dry conditions and light-textured soil increase risk of stand thinning from seed-placed fertilizer. Increased soil moisture lowers the risk to seedling injury. This rate also ensures all seeds are in fairly close proximity to phosphate prills or droplets. Because this rate is not enough to match crop removal, the ideal practice is to split the application and put the rest in a side or mid-row band. Another option is to put higher rates with other crops in the rotation, achieving the crop-removal balance with a whole-farm approach applied over time. These are very difficult to identify with phosphorus. Often severely deficient fields don’t show any major outward symptoms, which is why Jeff Schoenau, professor of soil fertility at the University of Saskatchewan, uses the term “hidden hunger” to describe phosphorus deficiencies. Growth rate and vigour are often stunted, but this only becomes obvious when compared side by side with plants that are not deficient.

the second pass. For this season, it is expected that a single pass with a McFarland harrow will be sufficient to prepare the seed bed for spring planting. Another field with heavier, sod-bound ground required three passes with a roller between passes and each pass made at a 45-degree angle to the other. The 2020 plan for this field is to make a single pass with the McFarland before seeding. O’Dwyer says, “The high-speed disk fits best on my operation to shear the top 1- 1 ½” of residue and soften it up so I can seed into it.” One benefit of the highspeed disk is the ability to travel fast, but on rough ground, this can be a challenge. O’Dwyer also says that most high-speed implements work better the faster you go, but they also, “Need good ground to hook into and some resistance to pull through.” In a single pass, there is a lot more action, so fewer passes are required to achieve the same results as a conventional disk. This also means that they require a lot of horsepower, are heavy and all have packers, meaning that the conditions must be right for the highspeed disk to be used and compaction as well as hard-pan issues can arise in some cases. O’Dwyer also warns that a high-speed disk does not work well following a plow or other tillage equipment. Often, he says, producers will call, wanting to use the high-speed disk after plowing is already done, which is not a good fit for the implement. In light of this, it is important to assess what is really going on in the field, and what you are hoping to accomplish before you start tilling the soil. The shearing action of a high-speed disk can sometimes create a hard pan layer if the conditions are too wet (Guenther, 2016 & O’Dwyer, 2020). In addition, the weight of the disk as well as the packers means that using it in wet conditions will likely result in compaction issues (O’Dwyer, 2020). This spring, it is essential to make sure that conditions are sufficiently dry to allow these implements to work. In the 2019 season, one

For those who have grown fescue in the Peace country, the challenges of taking that crop out of seed production are well-know. Creeping Red, Hard Fescue and Sheep’s Fescue are perhaps some of the most resilient forage crops in the Peace Country, making them very difficult to get rid of once the seed production phase has passed. Vertical tillage or a high-speed disk, most often preceded by herbicide applicationsometimes even applied with a roller sprayer- is one method that many believe works well in the Peace Region, especially for operations using minimal tillage. The high-speed disk and vertical tillage implements do have several important differences, but a quick Google search shows that these terms are often used interchangeably. The true vertical tillage implement has vertically mounted disks as opposed to the high-speed disk’s notched and angled blades. With a vertical tiller, aggressiveness is determined by the depth of the wave in the blade. Blades with bigger wave-height are much more aggressive than those with a shallower wave (O’Dwyer, 2020). With the vertical tiller, “You’re not flipping soil. You’re just slicing it” (Guethner, 2016). On a high-speed disk, the angle of the blades and depth-setting determines the level of soil disturbance. Both implements are quite compact, allowing for a smoother finish, even on ground that is not perfectly flat (O’Dwyer, 2020). High-speed disks, it seems, are a viable option to reduce the number of passes required to prepare a field for seeding after forage seed production. Trevor O’Dwyer from Agroworks, Flaman Rentals, says that the high-speed disk is heavy enough to penetrate older fescue stands, allowing producers to work the ground from shallow to deep as opposed to starting from the opposite end of the spectrum. In 2019, a lighter stand of fescue was worked down, requiring two passes with the high-speed disk. The first pass was set at 2” depth, rolled and then set to 2 ½” depth for

continued from previous: vertical tillage, high-speed disk Peace region operation used the high-speed disk to prepare the seed bed where peas had lodged before combining, leaving high levels of residue and unfavorable seeding conditions. In some cases, vertical tillers have been known to bury residue that is later pulled out of the soil by a seed drill. In this instance, the high-speed disk was able to chop the heavy residue and bury it shallow, preparing the seed bed in one pass (O’Dwyer, 2020). Instances such as this highlight the importance of finding the right tool to fit the situation. Tobin Dirks, a BC producer used a Horsch high-speed disk on a fescue stand that had been previously sprayed. After two passes at 2-3” depth, peas were seeded and, it seems, this practice offered a small yield advantage. Dirks believes that the high-speed disk does, “Seem to take down the fescue for the following year.” Dirks also plans to use the implement in the upcoming season to take existing fescue stands out of production. Vertical tillers are made to fit a slightly different situation than the high-speed disks. Blair Hill, a Peace region producer says that one of the main uses for his Salford RTS 2100 vertical tiller is on fescue and timothy stands after combining. He says that the vertical tiller not only chops the straw more thoroughly after the combine, but it also helps push the straw close to the soil surface, allowing it to break down quicker. Hill
says that after baling the straw for several years, the soil on one fescue field began to show adverse effects. He started leaving the residue in the field and running the vertical tiller at approximately 1-1 ½” depth. After doing this, he says excess residue became much less of an issue and soil biology seems to have improved. The vertical tiller has allowed him to deal effectively with the residue while keeping soil disturbance to a minimum. Hill says, “You can’t really tell that it’s been through the field except for the wheel tracks.” He adds that, “If you want soil disturbance, this is not your rig.” In recent years, there has been an interest for forage seed producers to be able to increase seed production or extend production years. In these cases, vertical tillage and high-speed disks have been used, but according to Calvin Yoder, Alberta Agriculture Advisor for the Peace Region, few of these trials have proven overly successful. Despite this, vertical tillage and high-speed disks are becoming increasingly popular in many sectors of modern agriculture. Indeed, there are instances where these implements are useful and are a good fit for those seeking to reduce the number of passes required to till the soil. There is, however, a simultaneous increase in interest about soil biology and how our tillage practices might be affecting the world beneath our feet. Coming from a zero-till back-
ground, it is essential to understand not only what we are hoping to accomplish in the short term, but also how those actions might affect soil health in the long run. Finding a solution for the many situations agriculture presents is difficult. There are no easy or quick answers, it does appear that when we are willing to think creatively about how we have reached our conclusions and why we make decisions as we do, we might surprise even ourselves with the answer and subsequent choices. P.S. For those looking at demo videos or more information regarding vertical tillage, Agroworks, Flaman Rentals has a short clip that has

Does something special have to happen to learn? What does good learning look like? What skills are required to be a good learner? How do you view learning? Does the teacher have responsibilities? Does the student have responsibilities? Is learning always fun? Can learning be challenging? Can learning be frustrating? If you were learning a lot, would or could it feel challenging? Does challenging equal excitement for some and frustration for others? What are some of the responses people have to challenge or difficulties? Do we get to choose our response? Is frustration a choice? What responses empower you and others to learn? What responses would interfere with learning for you and anyone watching? Does a good learner try to prove or improve? If we are struggling, is it someone else’s fault? If two people are given a task and one completes the task while one does not, which person learned the most? Do we all start every learning opportunity with the same skills? Does each student come with the same open mind and skills it takes to learn? Does mental fitness, emotional fitness, physical fitness play any part in learning? I could go on with the questions for a least two pages and after 20 years of teaching and being taught, I’ve heard and seen some responses and patterns that are productive and some that are not productive. Over those years I’ve taken many months of training and seminars each year in and out of the horse corral. Courses on how do we learn, how to facilitate/teach/ present ideas, business courses, speaking courses and horsemanship courses. All because of a deep interest to always be improving and figure out better ways. It didn’t take long for me to realize that the horsemanship I’m always improving on helped with all the other courses I took and the other courses helped with the horsemanship. I try to look at learning as an opportunity to grow. The more challenging or difficult it seems, even if people other than me are getting it easily, I realize that they are at a different place than me and perhaps that is why they are having an easier time. Which I then say “I’ll focus on this course exactly where I am and get the most out of it for me.” Celebrate what we do learn rather than focus on what we don’t know yet. How can I apply myself? I can listen more intently than the people around me, I can practice the exercises more than the people around me, I can watch my instructor more than anyone else, I can be the first one there and the last to leave, I can move to a better spot to see or I can move to a better spot to hear. Even
when we are not being taught I can still be practicing or watching the instructor to pick up anything else and have more chances to see the techniques or skills they use. I like to say I will learn regardless of anything. You can’t stop me from learning. Nothing can happen or not happen that can stop me from learning. I have a goal to practice more than anyone else at the same course. I realize that learning often means my preconceived ideas or things I thought I knew might get challenged and I might have to change - sometimes a lot – sometimes completely. And that’s ok, I didn’t come to here prove anything, I came to improve and would be very disappointed if I went home without changing any of my thoughts or skills. If I thought I was the worst in the class I should be the first to arrive and the last to leave. The opposite way of thinking which could make it very difficult to learn may sound or look something like this. “If this or that doesn’t happen I can’t learn..… .I learn best if….... I can only learn if…… that’s not the way I do it…..I was shown how to do it like this.” Can’t, won’t, ya but, all words that get in the way of learning. What if the instructor is demonstrating something and I’m looking somewhere else? Or if the instructor is talking and I have a conversation at the same time with someone else? What if I ask another student how to do it? If I let myself believe that I already know this? I might even be there to prove rather than improve. Perhaps I’ll put the onus on someone else if I’m having difficulties, not understanding or struggling. Most everything that is to be learned has steps to learn. Step 1 then step 2 then step 3 and so on. So do step 1. At least get that done. Start, if that’s all I get done, oh well, that’s where I’m at and I now I can do step one. Yippie!!! I have to own where I’m at. I was hoping to be able to do all 10 steps like the other people but I guess they started at a different place mentally, emotionally and physically than I did. I better get with it so I can catch up. If I was struggling and I showed up last or late for every session that could be a problem. If something is difficult, try to do it once before quitting, and maybe try again tomorrow. There are many ways to have a very successful learning experience and many ways to have a poor learning experience. No matter how hard a person tries not to learn they will learn something. It really does appear that some people do everything possible not to learn. I’ve done plenty of things at times that I
look back on and realize how difficult I made it on myself. Had I consciously thought about what would be beneficial and what wouldn’t, I sure would of learned more and had a completely different experience; gotten where I wanted to get much faster. As I was writing this article, I was also reading an article from the Harvard Business Review on this same topic. Here are a few key points from the article: How to Learn Faster and Better that support successful learning: 1. Be Present. Pay attention to what is happening in the moment-not what was said 15 minutes ago or what will happen at the next meeting. 2. Be self-aware. What are you seeing, hearing, feeling, doing, saying, considering? 3. Identify a range of behavioural choices. What do you want to do next? What are the possible consequences for each action? What feedback have you gotten that might inform your choices? What are some alternative choices you can make-even if they’re not what you want to do or what you usually do? 4. Intentionally choose behaviours that are believed to be the most productive. What behaviour will generate the best outcome, even if it’s not the behaviour that comes easiest to you? (Source: “How to Move from Self-Awareness to SelfImprovement”. By Jennifer Porter.Harvard Business Review. Winter 2019 pp.37-38) Do you have that friend or friends that if you’re doing something they watch closely and figure out what you’re going to do next and hand you the tool or grab the next piece or do it for you before you can get to it. They just stopped by for a coffee but figured out what was happening and immediately jumped in. All the while they hold a conversation about something completely unrelated. You didn’t say what you were doing or needed or what you were doing next but they knew because they have a skill that many don’t. Have you ever done the same thing 20 times right in front of someone exactly the same simple steps but they didn’t see anything and then say they really want to learn that someday. One of these people have better learning skills. For fun try answering the above questions, than have a friend answer them and compare answers. It makes for some interesting conversation. Worth contemplating and enjoy learning! Glenn Stewart

And now we unravel anxiety in dogs and cats By Dr. Carmen Schneider, DVM As our dogs and cats are considered family members, it is rewarding to bring them with us wherever we go, whether that is by car, RV, plane, or boat. I often get requests for “just something to calm him/her down to travel” but unfortunately it is often not as simple as this. I find it can sometimes be unrewarding or frustrating for clients as the medication options work very differently in different pets. Due to this, it is crucial to plan ahead and start early with prep if you think you may encounter any anxiety issues traveling with your pet. So let’s start at the very beginning, the puppy stage. Socialization is very important in puppies and kittens and this includes getting them used to situations you want them to be comfortable with later on in life. When you get a puppy/kitten, think about the activities you will want to do and expose them to these early on in life in a calm and non-threatening way so they perceive these things as normal and not scary. For example, if you would like to take them boating, train them to a life vest or sweaters. It gets a bit more complicated with car rides in this aspect as puppies and kittens can experience car sickness due to an underdeveloped balance system. If your puppy/ kitten does get car sick you may need to wait for them to outgrow this stage before getting them
used to car rides. However, there are still things you can do for socialization such as letting them hang out in the car at a stand-still. If you will be keeping your pet in crate when traveling (especially with cats) make sure they are crate trained really well so this does not add any anxiety. This part is also crucial for airplane travel as flying is not something we can socialize them to easily but we can make sure that they are not already scared just by putting them in a small kennel or crate. Kennel training cats also has the benefit of making clinic visits less stressful so it is useful whether or not you plan to travel. Make sure you make these happy/relaxed experiences with lots of treats to create good associations and keep practicing as they get older. If you missed the puppy stage, it is never too late to get your pets used to these things but it may just take a little more work and patience. Fast forward to prior to a trip with an anxious pet. Make an appointment to discuss your options with your veterinarian weeks in advance. I like to have lots of time to try out medications ahead of time. I find this especially important with plane rides as you are committed once you are there no matter what state your pet is in. The issue is that one medication can do absolutely nothing in one pet but in another may sedate them too much. With lots of time you can try out different products (from more natural to more
serious pharmaceuticals) at different doses to see what works best. Ideally, they should be exposed to the stress that they will be experiencing as they can over-ride the medication in stressful situation when it may work well in a calm situation. With car-rides this is easy as you just go for a test drive. Of course with flying this is not so easy, but try to find something else that causes your pet at least some level of stress to see if the product will work. Another reason for starting this process long before your trip is that some calming products need weeks of treatment to build up to the desired level in their bodies. There are several different options for calming products out there. Options include pheromone sprays, probiotics to add to food, anti-anxiety medication such as Zylkene or Trazodone, and others. Your veterinarian may recommend one or a combination of medication. Again, make sure you do test trials with the prescribed medication. It is really worthwhile to do this work ahead of time so that both you and your pet can have a more relaxing trip. Ensure you are prepared in other aspects of pet travel as well such as checking your destination for any vaccine and parasite requirements and having more than enough medication on hand to make it through the trip. Enjoy your travels!

A look inside the cow-calf AgriProfit$ farm report
“With 2020 underway, cattle producers set their sights on targets for the coming year,” says Ann Boyda, livestock economist with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AF). “It is important to assess the ability to pursue those goals, and the AgriProfit$ program can help with that.” Cow-calf producers enrolled in the program receive additional reports after completing their detailed cost and return survey. “They receive a balance sheet that summarizes all the investment assets and financial obligations as of the end of the production year,” she says. Assets and liabilities are organized into current, intermediate and long-term categories, and Boyda says that producers can use this report to provide a picture of both their liquidity and solvency positions. Liquidity is the difference between current assets and current liabilities or working capital. Solvency considers all assets and liabilities. “Liquidity helps producers deal with business risk like uncertain prices, yields and production costs, allowing flexibility. A debt ratio of less than 1 indicates a solvent business. Ratios of up to .5 are considered safe.” Another report they receive is the farm revenue and expenses summarizing the farm’s income and expenses on an accrued adjusted basis. “Accrual based income statements take into account the change in value of all inventories – livestock, crops, purchased inputs,” she explains. “It recognizes the value of production when revenues are earned – whether sold for cash, sold on account, or are ready for sale.” “Similar on the expense side, production costs recognize cash purchases, accounts payable and
changes in supply inventories. With this information, producers can better decide if the level of profitability meets their expectations or whether there is room for improvement.” To help with that, AgriProfit$ provides the producer with enterprise reports, including: The cow-calf enterprise report and physical performance. It includes the unit cost – dollar per cow wintered and dollar per pound weaned of all costs and returns from producing weaned calves. It also incorporates physical performance indicators – length of breeding and calving period, conception and weaning rates, death loss, winter feed use and grazing costs. The backgrounding enterprise report that looks at dry lot and grasser performance on a pen-by-pen or lot-by-lot basis. Feeder performance looks at days on feed, average daily gain and unit production costs. Forage, crop and pasture enterprise reports that present the costs and returns on a field-byfield basis, expressed in total and per acre values. “This most certainly is a lot of information to digest, but fear not,” adds Boyda. “AF has developed guides and videos designed to help with interpreting the results. Armed with this information, cow-calf producers are better equipped to pursue their upcoming year’s goals and put a plan in place to make it happen.” The AgriProfit$ program offers customized business analysis to help Alberta producers maximize profits and lower costs for their farms at no charge. Sign up for AgriProfit$. Producer information is held in strict confidence. Only aggregated, non-identifying information is published.

Ag economics analysis, bite-sized
This series, created by the Economic and Competitiveness Branch at Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AF), covers topics including farm economics and cost of production, economic impacts of crop and livestock diseases, and environmental and trade issues. “Agricultural economic topics can be complex,” says Anne Huennemeyer, research economist with AF. “Explained in Brief unpacks this analysis into 2 pages. It’s an accessible format that makes this information available to a broader readership and to more Albertans.”

Explained in Brief: Uncovering Canola’s Success in Alberta – This analysis looks at why canola expanded into Alberta at a record pace. It also explains why despite high production costs, costs per bushel may be trending downward. It covers the risk that reliance on canola could create. Explained in Brief: Durum Wheat in Alberta – The province grows 20% of Canada’s durum wheat, and Canada is the world’s largest producer and exporter of it. The analysis compares durum wheat yields on irrigated land to dryland production. It explains why minimizing cost of production may be critical to profit from this crop. Explained in Brief: CWRS Wheat in Alberta – Canadian Western Red Spring (CWRS) wheat is the most popular class of hard red wheat in Canada, and Alberta grows one-third of it. The analysis looks at why the cost of production and profitability per bushel is comparable for both irrigated and dryland production systems. It covers how producers can work with tight but positive margins. Beekeepers abuzz for next round of BC funding
Beekeepers around the province will be able to apply for the fifth round of Bee BC funding soon, enabling them to launch creative projects in their communities that support the health of bees in British Columbia. “Bees have always been part of my life, and as I grew up my passion for them only grew stronger,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture. “Its amazing to see the unique and innovative ways communities are getting involved through Bee BC

to help support the province’s bees and find solutions to keep them safe and healthy.” The next application intake begins Monday, Feb. 17, 2020, for regional and community-based organizations, beekeeping associations and beekeepers in B.C. Each project is eligible to receive up to $5,000 to fund projects enhancing bee health. Projects can range from providing education in communities and planting bee-specific forage, to using innovation and technology to help protect and ensure bee health in B.C. The last round of projects included: electronic monitoring of hives to assess hive conditions that studied brood quantification, brood-pattern assessment and examining early signs of disease in Rosedale; the construction of a “bee barn” to improve overwintering and colony survival in the Kootenays; and engaging with youth-led citizen science, monitoring native wildflower lawns and reporting results to the public in the South Coast. Since launching in 2018, Bee BC has contributed almost $178,000 to fund 42 projects through four rounds of funding. The last round allotted close to $55,000 for 13 projects. Bee BC is a four-year, $400,000 provincial program that makes $100,000 of these funds available to projects investing in bee health
each fiscal year. The Bee BC program provides funding to smaller-scale, community-based projects that support the health of B.C.’s bees. The fund provides support to research, explore, field test and share information about best management practices associated with bee health. The Bee BC program is administered by the Investment Agriculture Foundation of BC on behalf of the Ministry of Agriculture. May 29, 2019, was proclaimed Day of the Honey Bee in B.C. B.C. beekeepers were represented at the 46th Apimondia International Apiculture Congress in Montreal in fall 2019, thanks in part to $20,000 in provincial support. Honeybees are an important part of B.C.’s agriculture sector as pollinators of crops, contributing an estimated $560 million to the provincial economy. The 2016 total annual economic contribution of honeybee pollination for major insect-pollinated crops (additional harvest value) was estimated at $2.57 billion. (Source: Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada) In 2018, B.C. beekeepers produced over 1,400 tonnes of honey, valued at $13.7 million in farm cash receipts. This represents an 11% increase over 2017 and 7.6% above the previous five-year average receipts.

Government supports new pilot risk mgt. tool for pork producers
Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, announced today the development of a risk management strategy being undertaken by the Manitoba Pork Council for pork producers to recover from the devastation caused by potential outbreaks of diseases, such as porcine epidemic diarrhea. The Manitoba Pork Council will receive an investment of $482,158 towards a 2-year project that aims to create an effective, affordable, and self-sustainable risk management program, that responds to periods of financial instability in the Manitoba hog industry. This could also include measures to assist producers with costs associated with cleaning and disinfection, so the producer is able to recover as quickly as possible. It follows on the success of provincial poultry sectors in Canada

that have established a reciprocal insurance system to guard against the impacts of Avian Influenza and other diseases. While still at the early stages of development, if successful, the risk management strategy could expand to incorporate pork sectors in other provinces, with the understanding that the bigger the pool of participants, the more affordable it would be to individual producers. Canada is a world leader of pork production and the Government stands shoulder-to-shoulder with its pork farmers. The Government is fully engaged in maintaining the stability of our pork farmers, evidenced by the many measures being taken to prevent African swine fever from entering Canada. “Producers need to know that they have the tools and supports available to them if the worst happens. I’m excited by the potential of this project, not just for Manitoba, but for the pork sector across Canada. Our Government is working closely with the sector on many measures that deal with disease outbreaks before, during and after they occur,” said Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food “Manitoba Pork thanks the federal government for their support of this project, so that we can develop some private sector solutions to mitigate the economic impact of diseases
and market fluctuations. We will ensure that the project results will have application to all pork producers in Canada. The poultry sector has lead the way in developing risk management tools for specific diseases that affect their sector. We hope to build upon those initiatives to create insurance products for the pork sector,” added George Matheson, Chair, Manitoba Pork Council The project is funded under the AgriRisk Initiatives (ARI), a fiveyear program under the Canadian Agricultural Partnership that supports the development of new risk management tools. The Research and Development stream prioritizes projects involving new financial tools which allow producers to manage a defined business risk. Manitoba Pork Council’s mission is to foster the sustainability and prosperity of the hog sector for the good of pork producers and all Manitobans. The Canadian Agricultural Partnership is a five-year, $3-billion investment by federal, provincial and territorial governments to strengthen the agriculture and agri-food sector. The Partnership includes programs and activities to enhance the competitiveness of the sector through research, science and innovation.

Farmers’ Advocate Office cautions farmers and ranchers The Farmers’ Advocate Office (FAO) strongly cautions farmers and ranchers not to follow recommendations from a surface rights group in the province that advised they, “safely turn off the power to the well and safely close the valves.” The FAO says that it is very important that rural Albertans understand that following this reckless advice can pose risks to personal and public safety, create environmental hazards and could result in exposure to legal claims for damages and criminal charges. Interfering with any oil and gas infrastructure or that of an electrical distribution utility could create public safety risks including spills of liquids and gases, explosions, fires and electrocution. Many landowners are rightfully frustrated when oil and gas operators fail to live up to their obligations under a surface lease. However, before acting, landowners should seek specific legal advice to understand their rights, respon-
sibilities and risks prior to taking any steps to deal with contractual breaches by operators. Note: A landowner has recourse to obtain compensation for unpaid or reduced annual rentals through the Surface Rights Board (SRB) under Section 36 of the Surface Rights Act (SRA). A company cannot unilaterally decide to reduce the amount of annual compensation provided to a landowner for loss of use and adverse effect. Section 27(6) of the SRA entitles landowners the opportunity to negotiate with industry in good faith. Negotiations must be honest, fair and engage both parties, and recourse to the SRB for a ruling may be had if no agreement can be reached. For more information on the SRA Section 36 Recovery of Rentals process, reach the SRB at 780-4272444, email srblcb@gov.ab.ca or visit the Alberta Surface Rights Board website.

Tbis is the canola call option strategy “Many producers are currently storing canola, waiting for a higher price,” explains Blue. “While waiting for a more attractive price for canola, a strategy that some producers use is to sell call options.” He says that canola remains as the only crop to have a functioning futures and options market trading in Canadian dollars. Access to the futures and options market can be either direct through an account with a futures brokerage firm, or indirect with a grain company that has a futures account. “A grain company may offer futures and options related contracts to producers, and those contracts are usually offered as part of a physical delivery contract.” First, he offers some background. “Call options are tradeable each day that the canola futures market is open. Like futures, there is a seller for every buyer at a common price to have a trade occur. The buyer of a call option pays
ACREAGE AGRICULTURAL INDUSTRIAL
a fee – the premium – to purchase the right to buy canola futures at a certain price – the strike price – anytime during the option life.” “The seller of the call option collects a premium in exchange for providing the option buyer the right to buy futures at that certain price. The risk of the option buyer is just the premium paid plus some commission.” “The risk of the call option seller is that the futures price moves higher than the strike price by more than the premium collected. Each option is specific to a certain futures month and has a predefined expiry date.” “A producer has sold and delivered half of the 2019 produced canola, does not need cash flow in the short term, believes that the canola futures and/or basis levels will improve after February, has a futures account and the balance of the canola will store safely. The July canola futures price is $490 per tonne.” He says that, although any of the options would be considered, the producer sells one or more 20 tonne July 510 call options and collects $6.50 per tonne. “The July canola options expire on June 26. Meanwhile, the producer could remove the call option by buying that 510 call option in the market at any time. However, if the July 510 call option is held until expiry and if, at that time, the July futures price is less than $510 per tonne, that 510 call option will expire worthless and the producer keeps the $6.50 premium, minus broker
commission.” That premium collected adds to the eventual selling price of the canola. “If the futures price at option expiry is above $510 per tonne, then the producer would be assigned a sell futures position at $510 per tonne, and still keep the $6.50 premium collected. The sell futures position that just replaced the call option could then be considered a futures hedge at $516 per tonne, considering the collected premium.” “The newly created futures position would at some point be removed by buying July canola futures. Subject to the basis level, the result would be a much higher price than back in January, and some payment for storing the canola was obtained by collecting the option premium.” “Sometimes this strategy is termed ‘selling a covered call,’ covered in the sense that the physical canola backs up the strategy. An option with a shorter life may have been used instead of the July option.” He adds that in a carrying charge market – for example, higher futures prices in forward months – as the futures carrying charge is eroded away with time passing, the likelihood is greater of the ‘short’ call losing premium or expiring. “In summary, the covered call strategy is a method of being paid to store canola while retaining the right to shop the market for the strongest basis for pricing the physical canola.” Below, not canola.

Collie Corner By Carol Nelson
Understanding stock When working a dog on livestock the handler is always striving to have balance and harmony between the dog and livestock so the stock have a calm and relaxed manner about them as they are being moved. This attitude is attained by the handler who reads or understands the flight zones of animals and how they respond to pressure being applied by the dog. Handlers who work the same dog will often comment on how the dog responds and listens differently to each handler. This is not because the dog likes one person better than the other or because one fed him the night before. Handler body position and timing are crucial to a dogs response to both handler and stock but more importantly it is the handlers ability to read or understand the dog and how it interacts with the livestock that is going to make the biggest difference. The handler that knows the dogs working habits well will be able to anticipate how the dog will react with each group of livestock. If the handler is observant and reads the stock correctly it will indicate how
the dog should be directed. If the stock is flighty and nervous then the handler who keeps the dog at a distance and has it work slow and careful will have a good chance of keeping everything calm and under control. Another handler may not judge the stock the same and let the dog approach closer and with more forward movement. This can set the stock to running and in the blink of an eye the situation rapidly goes downhill with unwanted results. Two different people can work the same stock with the same dog and the results of how they get the job done can be completely different. One team will look like winners while the other team may fall apart. These differences invariable come back to how the handler understood the livestock and their reactions and behaviors to pressure being applied by the dog. Getting dogs to understand the stock market is tough. That is not what this article is about however.

“Varieties of cereal and oilseed crops for Alberta provides information on cereal and oilseed variety performance within Alberta and northeastern British Columbia,” says Alex Fedko, crop research technologist with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. “Important agronomic characteristics and disease resistance information are provided for varieties of wheat, barley, oat, rye, triticale, flax and canola.” “An important component of the annual feed supply for Alberta’s cattle producers comes in the form of silage, green feed and swath grazing,” he adds. “As evidenced in Silage varieties for Alberta, the selection of varieties that produce the highest forage yield and/or nutritional quality becomes increasingly important.” Contact Connect with the Alberta Ag-Info Centre: Hours: 8 am to 5 pm (open Monday to Friday, closed statutory holidays) Toll free: 310-FARM (3276)

2020 Financial Plan The Peace River Regional District is currently in the process of finalizing the 2020 annual financial plan / operating budget. What is a Financial Plan? The annual Financial Plan is a budget planning process that covers the ongoing work and activities of the PRRD, as well as the execution of strategic priorities and initiatives set by the PRRD Board. Financial plans are the result of a thorough strategic, corporate, and financial planning process that begins in May of the previous year. Service planning drives the financial planning process and looks at the necessary information to evaluate the overall needs of the PRRD, new initiatives, proposed services, and implications for the budget and financial plan. Financial planning is done in four-year cycles, which allows the PRRD to budget for ongoing operational costs and services for residents as well as plan for long-term, capital projects that will support the sustainable development and growth of the region. The Peace River Regional District will continue to advocate Minister Popham to visit the region and work together towards solutions for the Agriculture Industry.
Connectivity Needs Assessment Access to internet (connectivity) benefits rural and remote communities. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) recently set minimum standards for internet speed in rural areas to help make sure rural residents get the same opportunities as other Canadians. The Peace River Regional District (PRRD) has hired Valo Networks and Canadian Fiber Optics Corporation to complete a connectivity needs assessment for the electoral areas of the PRRD. This includes making an inventory of existing networks, mapping locations of existing fiber, and identifying areas where there is no service. The PRRD has supported STARS for over 13 years, with STARS attending a total of 170 calls in the Peace Region since 2007, as well as additional missions in other areas of Northern BC. Thank you STARS for helping keep PRRD residents safe!

Grande Prairie & District Oldtimers’ Assn presents four scholarships to legacy students Grande Prairie & District Oldtimers’ Association (Submitted by Bob Patterson) The Grande Prairie & District Oldtimers’ Association was formed in September of 1928; making us one of the oldest organizations in the whole area. The only one older, we think, is the Grande Prairie & District Agricultural Society formed in 1912 or 1913. We were born from an idea the early pioneers had about having a group of people that came into the South Peace area before the railroad, which came to Grande Prairie on March 5, 1916. Today, we are still made up of descendants of these early pioneers. Parts of the constitution that came from the original meeting stated that its objects are “to collect and preserve in authentic form, a library of books, pamphlets, maps, charts, manuscripts, papers, paintings, photographs, and other material illustrative of the history of the Grande Prairie District.” In 1992, we started donating money to descendants of the pioneers in the form of scholarships; amounts varied over the years as funds were available. This year four students received $1,500 each. These names will be announced at our 92nd annual banquet which will be held at the Jackpot Grill (10904 – 92nd Avenue, Grande Prairie) on Wednesday, March 18th. Doors open at 4:30 p.m., supper will be served at 6:30 p.m. and live old-time music will be on hand. There will be a live auction, door prizes and a guest speaker. Tickets are available at the Golden Age Centre (10222 – 101st Avenue, Grande Prairie) or any board member. For more information, contact Cheryl at 780-831-8558 or Bob at 780-505-1239.
Kaley DORSCHEID
As a member of the Grande Prairie and District Oldtimers’ Association, I would be honoured to be considered for this award as I have deep roots within the Peace Country. My GreatGreat-Great and Great-Great Grandparents pioneered the south shores of Bear Lake. As they were farmers, I carry on that legacy with my family in the Peace region near Valleyview. Together we have achieved many things including the Crocus Hill/Valleyview Agricultural Society Farm Family awards in 2012 and 2013. I was an active member in 4-H for 7 years. I went on to become a Key Member of the Valleyview District where I organized and hosted workshops/events for various members and clubs. With 4-H, I spoke at many Communication Competitions in the Club, District and Regional levels. I have also spoken at the Valleyview Heart Conference for Victims Services which opened my eyes to the ability of a strong community. With this I would be beyond honoured and grateful for the opportunity to speak at the Annual Association Banquet. Thank you for considering my application
Keyana ANDERSON
In the summer of 2017, I started working for the Sexsmith Museum. The history of my town and surrounding areas has become a big part of who I am. The best part of my job is being able to share my knowledge with tourists and keep the history of the town alive. I also really treasure being able to be a part of the museum that my grandparents so passionately donate many hours of their time to. Academically, I am pursuing a degree in Kinesiology with the goal of becoming an Athletic Therapist. If chosen for this award, the money would go towards helping pay for tuition and books. Receiving this award would allow me to continue my schooling and pursue my dreams while relieving some of my financial stress.
Justin MIKHAIL
Regardless of my descent from pioneering generations, I have been an outstanding student in both academics and extracurricular involvement. During my high school career, I consistently placed on the 90’s honour roll through Grades 9 to 12. In my Grade 12 year, I held the highest academic average in my graduating class and was fortunately named the Class of 2019 Valedictorian. As well as excellent grades within school, I have had strong community involvement in my free time through working as a tutor for foreign students in Grande prairie, as well as taking part in various clubs such as the St. Joseph Rotary Interact Club, St. Joseph Student Council, and the St. Joseph Grad Council. Both my job as a tutor and my leadership roles in clubs show my dedication towards others and the community of Grande Prairie. I believe that the work I have put in to become a successful student and citizen makes me a good example for my peers and an excellent candidate for this scholarship. I hope to continue my successful habits through my studies in Engineering. The financial support of this scholarship would allow me to eventually have lower student loans and not to be restrained by my economic situation. Thank you for the review of my application.
Kara NELSON
I never met my Great-Grandfather. I was never able to hear, in his own voice, what it was like to come from Norway to northern Alberta, across the wide prairies and still-wider oceans. That said, I was privileged enough to read parts of the journal he kept about the trails he took, how extensive his travels were, and the homestead he built. Further, I know the legacy he left in the form of his children and the legacy his son (my grandfather) left as well. Having known my grandfather and who he was, I am glad to be attending the school he was involved with (and, incidentally, the school at which my parents met). If my great-grandfather was anything like his children, and from what I know it seems he was (at least to some degree), he was a man whose legacy I am glad to be a part of. The more I think about it, the more respect I gain for the pioneers of the area, and the more my interest in their stories grows. What must the first winter have been like, for example? Though Norway has winters enough of its own, it is quite a different thing to build a new home from scratch that will withstand Alberta winters. I cannot imagine ever doing it myself. All I can do now is do my best to live a life such that, had my great-grandfather, his parents, and his parents’ parents known me, they would be proud to call me their family, as I am proud to call them mine.

Motorcycletourism.com rewards riders, you know
2020 brings polls and surveys for you to take and when you take them, we will have some sort of reward or perk that your name will go in a draw for. It might be an extra ballot for a chance to win one of the Ultimate Motorcycle Vacation Packages that we are giving away, it could be a gas card or a meal, you just never know! These will be short 1 - 3 question polls and surveys to help us target in on various sectors of the travel and tourism industry and how they interact with riders. Our aim will be to take this information, create a training course/seminar, have you good folks help us make sure that we help the travel industry better understand the needs of we riders. We will also have small polls from our presenting sponsor Braithwaite Boyle White Knights Injury Law Team. Ken Braithwaite has been a crash victim. He understands all too well the pain, frustration and chal-
lenges of being injured in a crash. He wants to ensure that he and his team provide you with everything you need in the event of a crash. Again prizes will be on the line! We also have our wonderful call centre - The Rider Hotline presented by Intercon Messaging in Drayton Valley Alberta. Intercon Messaging not only offers you a way to connect to members of the Rider Friendly Support Network, but they can also offer you the NEVER RIDE ALONE PROGRAM. This program is based on the never work alone program and very simply you call the hotline and ask to use the Never Ride Alone Program. They ask for your membership number, the make, model and colour of your bike, and the route you are travelling. They ask about what you know of the road conditions, construction, weather and the line. Then you decide where you are stopping for fuel. When you get
there, you dial the toll-free number and let them know you arrived. If you are continuing on your way, call them back and let them know the next fuel stop. If for any reason (belt, chain, tires, engine issues, wildlife etc.) you don’t arrive at the prescribed time, they will wait a certain amount of time (agreed upon previously) and then they will attempt to call you at the numbers you have left them. If they still can’t raise you, they will contact 911 and someone will be on their way to find you from your last fuel stop. It’s a FREE service offered to CMTA Road Team members and members of the Rider Friendly Support Network. You can use this service every day of your trip if you wish. I know I use it a lot when I am in the mountains and places I know cell service is bad. My husband has MS and can’t take calls at work. It’s nice for him, as he knows I always have an angel for Intercon Messaging, riding with me. Peace of mind for him, and it allows
me to really enjoy my ride. Our community at motorcycletourism.ca is now ready for our members to engage in. It comes complete with groups, personal walls and news streams, and it will be here that we ask for your assistance and support. It is here that we will be announcing our monthly prizes and the locations that the CMTA Road Team membership booth will be at. Want an extra ballot to win the Ultimate Motorcycle Vacation Packages???? Come to one of the 17 events we will be at in 2020 and show us your card for your chance to win an extra ballot! Become a member at www.motorcycletourism.ca where riding is very rewarding!
