Crop residue burning for Peace grain, oilseed producers

Northern Horizon

The BC Wildfire Service is working with agriculture producers in the Peace region to accommodate the burning of residual crops to prepare for 2020 seeding. A significant number of grain crops in the Peace were not harvested in the fall of 2019 due to excess field moisture and snow.

Exemptions from open burning prohibitions are only open to Peace region grain and oilseed producers who are producing a food crop for 2020 and who follow the process outlined below: If salvage value exists, combining the crop will be the first option. If salvage potential is low, and equipment and time allow, discing plant fibre into the soil and allowing for the breakdown of residual material can create an appropriate seed bed. The final option is open burning to remove all stubble and allow for an ideal seed bed.

last option for any agriculture producer. If the first two options are not appropriate for a particular farm, the operator can apply for an exemption letter and burn registration number. Both are mandatory before burning can commence. The application process can be sought from the Ministry of Agriculture office in Fort St. John or through the BC Grain Producers Association. Crop residue burning is exempt from the Open Burning Smoke Control Regulation (OBSCR). However, agriculture producers who are burning diseased vegetation should contact ministry staff at OBSCR@ gov.bc.ca. Additional information about diseased vegetation burning is available from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy. Calgary Stampede 2020 cancelled

Breakfast Brief CORN, SOYBEAN EXPORTS AND A (SMALL) BULLISH CASE (April 24, 2020, FarmLead.com) Grain markets are in the red today, extending this week’s losses, despite rumours of more U.S. corn and soybean exports purchases by China. And, I mean, why wouldn’t they? Yesterday on the Chicago futures board, corn prices and soybean prices touched key support levels and new contract lows of $3.01 and $8.10 USD/ bushel respectively!

Calgary – On account of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Chief Medical Officer of Health of Alberta has banned all gatherings of more than 15 people for an indefinite period of time and the City of Calgary has declared a state of local emergency. These steps, as well as our continuing concern for the health and well-being of our community, means we are unable to host the 2020 edition of the Calgary Stampede.

Yesterday’s corn and soybean exports sales report came in at the low end of expectations, but there was 272,000 MT of soybean exports booked by China that was announced. In terms of actual shipments, U.S. soybean exports have noticeably slowed, tracking less than 5% above last year with just under 33.2 MMT sailed through Week 33 of the 2019/20 crop year (or about 1.22 Billion bushels if converting metric tonnes into bushels).

“This is an extremely difficult announcement to share, but it is the right thing to do,” says Dana Peers, Calgary Stampede President & Chairman of Board. ”As a community celebration, the cancellation of our annual event comes with our community and public health and safety front of mind.”

Worth noting on the corn and soybean exports front is the fact that Argentina’s Parana River has seen a historic drop in its water levels. This means that that company’s trying to ship recently harvest crops aren’t able to do so effectively since they can’t load boats to capacity. More Corn, Soybean Exports for China’s Animals?

“This is hard, but we need to make these types of decisions right now in order to stay safe and move forward,” says Tom Sampson, Chief, Calgary Emergency Management Agency. “It’s not what anyone wants to see happen but it’s pretty much mandatory at this time, and we applaud the Stampede for putting the safety of all Calgarians and their guests first.”

Speaking of meat, it’s been estimated by one union that at least 5,000 U.S. meat and foodprocessing workers have been exposed to COVID-19. With roughly 25% of America’s meatprocessing capacity now offline due to COVID-19 shutdowns, retail prices for beef have hit new record levels (this is what happens when demand stays strong but there’s way less packaged meat products to go around!). Conversely, with these plants shut down, there’s obviously nowhere for the animals from livestock producers to go. Quite literally, farm-gate prices for Canadian hogs has fallen about 30% to unprofitable levels, meaning pig farmers have started to cull their herds, unless the Canadian government provides $500M in direct assistance. In the U.S., it’s arguably in a worse situation with more plants shut down, which is leading to the possibly of 200,000 pigs being culled in Minnesota alone! Analysis from Dermot Hayes, an economist at Iowa State University, suggests that the top 40 hog producers in the U.S. will lose at least $18M each. Each! That’s $720M in losses.

The Calgary Stampede has been around for 108 years, through two World Wars, the Great Depression and a devastating flood. But the loss of this year’s Stampede is bigger than our not-for-profit organization. Many local businesses are part of the greater Stampede, from the restaurants, bars and hotels, to the retailers, ride share and taxi drivers who support western culture throughout our city. We know the financial impact this will have on them.

That said, with China’s economy slowing starting to open back up, there are a lot of rumours buzzing that they’re going to be buying more American corn and soybean exports to (A) help reduce the record high domestic prices there and (B) fulfill the obligations signed in their trade deal back in January. For the former point, China is a bit short on feedstuffs after global tradeflows have slowed with ports either closed or operating at smaller capacity.

“The Stampede is a critical part of who we are as Calgarians. It’s almost impossible to imagine a summer without it. But these are extraordinary times, and the Stampede has done what they always do: put the community first,” said Mayor Naheed Nenshi. “For me, riding a horse at the front of the parade is a moment, even with all the people and all the noise, for some introspection on who we are as a community. I’m sad to not be at my tenth parade this year. But we’ll dust ourselves off and come back even better. Together.”

In fact, Reuters is reporting that China is looking to buy more than 30 MMT of crops to protect itself from further supply chain disruptions. This would include about 10 MMT of soybeans and 20 MMT of corn, the latter being the most significant as, right now, it’s estimated that Chinese corn importers are making about $70 USD/MT on imported corn as Chinese corn prices are sitting at 15-year highs. This would intuitively be a positive for U.S corn exports and demand in general, considering weakness from ethanol processors. Quite clearly, through Week 33, U.S. corn exports have started to ramp up, with 21.65 MMT sailed now (or 852.3M bushels if converting metric tonnes to bushels).

With the best interests of the community in mind, the organization’s focus will now shift to fall, winter and spring events at Stampede Park as well as planning for the 2021 Stampede. When it’s appropriate, we will gather together to celebrate. We are also looking for new ways to bring western hospitality to the community as we collectively navigate through this difficult time.

Unfortunately, with cheap corn and soybean exports available from the U.S., China’s barley imports are expected to fall to 6 MMT. This is intuitively a bearish factor for Canadian barley; through Canadian barley exports are tracking 16% behind a year ago with 1.54 MMT sailed through Week 37. With the domestic market for Canadian barley prices remaining strong for now, listing any remaining old crop or even a new crop contract on the Combyne cash grain marketplace is a more common occurrence these days. Looking at the bearish factors, China’s agricultural ministry is expecting the pork supply in the People’s Republic to be under pressure this current calendar quarter, with pork prices likely peaking in September. This new forecast comes as Chinese pork production dropped 29% year-over-year in 1Q2020, the sixth straight calendar quarter of declines as the industry continues to work on eradicating the African Swine Fever in the Chinese herd. Ultimately, the intensity of uncertainty for grain prices – namely unknowns when it comes to demand – translates to being extra diligent to knowing (1) your cost of production and (2) your cash flow needs at different points over the next year. Have a great weekend! To growth, Brennan Turner, CEO, FarmLead TF: 1-855-332-7653 help@combyne.ag @Combyne on Twitter

Farm prices holding steady, other industries suffering Farm prices continue to hold their ground in the new viral reality. Farmers’ biggest concerns still being the weather, confirmed industry this week. “It’s not necessarily related to COVID 19, but what we’re seeing is a leveling off of farm prices, but that was already in the works,” said CLHbid President Roy Carter on Monday. Farm credit numbers continued to see a 5.2 increase across Western Canada for 2019. Carter cautions the number is an average, with prices varying from region to region. Farm incomes peaked in 2016, with a lag that industry has been tracking, says Carter. “The value of farmland in relation to farm

income is as large as it’s ever been,” said Carter, noting there are exceptions, including land sales south of Calgary which exceeded both pre and post COVID-19 prices. Manager Peter Raffan from Dawson Creek’s VJV Auction Markets, says COVID-19 has been a challenge. “We’re limited by buyers. It takes the confidence away from producers and packing plants. Some are closing down or going to one shift,” said Raffan, noting that cattle prices have been impacted, with the situation changing on a daily basis. Cattle prices sit at over $200 a head, for heifers and steers with some variation depending on weight as of April 14. However, agriculture continues to be one of the best economic sectors in both BC and Alberta. Other sectors have suffered some setbacks

due to the virus. “Obviously travel and tourism is hurting, it’s a grim perspective right now. But there’s always next year,” said DEW-Line Enterprises owner Don Whiteford, who was the former vice president of the Grande Prairie Regional Tourism Association. Whiteford also noted Travel Alberta has pulled out of their cooperative marketing program, which advocates for local rodeos, fairs, and music events. “They’ve decided any money they’re spending this year is going to be directed to recovery,” said Whiteford, noting that it’s a big question whether anyone can even put on events this summer. Oil and gas has also taken a hit, with Calgarybased energy companies continuing to reduce production, cut spending and trim costs as volatile oil prices remain stubbornly below profitable levels.

14 The Northern Horizon, May 1, 2020

This edition from the DCVC - COVID 19 and animals Written by Dr. Zoe Ross It seems that all the news these days is about COVID 19 and it has created a huge amount of worry and stress for people around the world. There have been many questions about COVID 19 and animals and the purpose of this article, is to answer some of these questions. COVID 19 is caused by a Corona virus, specifically SARSCoV-2. Producers and animal owners may have heard of other diseases in their livestock or pets that can be caused by corona virus (such as diarrhea in new born calves) but these diseases are not similar to COVID 19 and the virus that causes these diseases is not the same as that which causes COVID 19. Can animals get COVID 19? There have been several animals around the world that have tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 (dogs, cats and a tiger). These animals were in close contact with a human infected with the virus. Currently the spread of the virus seems to be primarily between humans and not from humans to animals or vice versa. Obviously this is being closely monitored as ongoing research is being done. The OIE (World Organization for Animal Health) is a really great reference site where more detailed information about surveillance and results of testing of animals. There haven’t been reports at this time of livestock being infected with the virus. Routine testing of animals for this

virus is not currently being recommended. Can animals act as a carrier of the virus? The risk for animals to carry the virus and transmit it to humans is considered low at this point. It doesn’t seem that the virus is replicating in pets and then transferring to people. It is also fairly unlikey for the pet to act as a fomite (an object that the virus sits on that can act as a source of infection). Pet hair is quite porous and research has shown that the virus doesn’t last as long on porous materials (such as cloth and paper) as it does on non porous surfaces (stainless steel and plastic). What should you be doing to protect your pet? We are encouraging clients and animal owners to follow the recommendations on social distancing, hand washing, not touching your face or mouth with your hands as well as covering your face when you cough or sneeze. If you are ill, try to handle your pet less and limit your pet’s contact with others. While at this time, it is not thought that animals can transmit the virus to people, there are other diseases that can be spread from animals to people. These are called zoonoses and it is always important to wash your hands well after touching animals and to regularly clean and disinfect pet food dishes and litter boxes. What happens if my pet or animal requires

veterinary care? Veterinary services are considered essential services at this time as it is important for public health, agri-food safety and animal health and welfare. Most veterinary practices are still open and providing emergency care to animals. At the Dawson Creek Veterinary Clinic, we have implemented measures to comply with social distancing and protect the health and safety of both our staff and our clients. We offer curbside services where clients can call when they arrive at the clinic for their appointment and a staff member will come out and get the patient. We are also providing some telemedicine appointments as well. Farm life continues regardless of COVID 19 and babies are being born (calves, foals, kids, lambs to name a few) and veterinarians are available to help with any emergencies that may arise as well as providing veterinary care to livestock. If you want to read more information about the virus and animals, the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association has information online as well as the OIE as previously mentioned. Our veterinarians are also available to answer any further questions you may have. Dr. Christa Harder and Dr. Joana Varga hard at work saving lives

facilities at Alberta Agriculture and Forestry’s Crop Diversification Centre South, including the design and construction of the current state-of-the-art greenhouse research complex. Howard’s greatest impact has been in his training of and influence on generations of farmers, agronomists, students and professionals. Dietrich (Dieter) Kuhlmann has been a leader in growing Alberta’s horticulture industry for more than 50 years. Three generations of family are now actively involved in running Kuhlmann’s - the greenhouse, garden, and market, originally founded by Kuhlmann and his wife Elizabeth in 1962. To this day, they have maintained their focus on outstanding relationships and selling direct to the customer. He has been an ongoing champion for the horticulture industry and the success of other growers, demonstrating that they can all benefit by learning and working together. Kuhlmann is past-president and founding member of the Alberta Greenhouse Growers Association, and he also worked to establish Sunfresh Farms, a grower-owned packing and distribution facility, bringing better revenues to member farms. Since 1951, the Hall of Fame has celebrated the accomplishments of men and women who have dedicated their lives to agriculture and their rural communities. The 135 inductees have been innovators and risk takers in every area of agriculture. Watch videos of the 2018 Ag Hall of Fame inductees and find the nomination forms on the Alberta Agriculture Hall Fame webpage. The deadline for nominations is May 15, 2020.

With the 2020 Agriculture Hall of Fame nomination deadline looming, a look back at the most recent recipients. Alberta’s Agriculture Hall of Fame recognizes up to 3 people every 2 years who have dedicated their lives to agriculture and their rural communities. As the nomination deadline of May 15 approaches, we look back at the 2018 inductees - Garnet Altwasser, Ron Howard and Dietrich (Dieter) Kuhlmann. Garnet Altwasser has been a leader in Canadian agribusiness during his 30-year term as president and chief executive officer of Lakeside Farm Industries. He saw the potential of Alberta’s climate and agronomy to add value to the province’s large ranching base. Altwasser co-founded and grew Lakeside Farm Industries into one the largest single-site feeding operations in Canada. With the establishment of a beef packing plant in Brooks, he also began the process of modernizing and growing Canada’s beef processing industry. He was one of the first commercial adopters of Temple Grandin’s cattle handling designs. Today, Alberta’s cattle feeding and beef processing industry is large-scale and globally competitive, thanks in large part to Altwasser’s long-range vision and leadership Ron Howard has spent more than 4 decades supporting the growth and development of high-value crop industries in Alberta, working with more than 50 different types of crops and plant species as a research, extension and diagnostic plant pathologist. He has developed many groundbreaking protocols, screened hundreds of horticulture, specialty and field crop varieties and breeding lines for disease resistance, and evaluated more than 200 chemical and biological control products for efficacy against pathogens in these crops. Howard was integral to the expansion and development of the research

Fields are needed for pea leaf weevil survey “If you are a producer who is planting peas in 2020 or an agronomist who has clients with pea fields, we would like the opportunity to visit your field,” says Shelley Barkley, insect technologist with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AF). “The timing of the survey coincides with maximum feeding damage and to find the fields in 4 to 6 node stage.” In each Alberta municipality where pea leaf weevil is known to exist, 5 fields are surveyed. In areas outside the known range of the insect, 3 fields per municipality are surveyed. In 2019, staff visited more than 250 pea fields in Alberta - from Warner to Manning and from Pincher Creek to Bonnyville. The survey is done from the field edge, and surveyors don’t enter the field. They count the

feeding notches on each set of nodes on a plant, and they evaluate 50 plants in each field. “This is probably the hardest survey we do because 4 to 6 node pea fields are not as easy to see from a distance as a flowering canola field,” she adds. “A lot of time is spent hunting for the fields. We would really like to streamline our survey in 2020, so we are trying to predetermine fields before we start the survey.” Participating producers will receive results from their field the week the survey is completed. CFA says domestic food supply should be priority in fight against COVID-19 Last week Mary Robinson, President of the Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA), hosted a virtual press conference to address the extraordinary challenges being faced by Canadian farmers due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This press conference was exclusively sponsored by Food and Consumer Products of Canada. Ms. Robinson warned that without immediate assistance from the federal government, the Canadian agriculture sector cannot ensure our domestic food supply will remain secure for the immediate and long-term benefit of all Canadians. On behalf of the CFA’s 200,000 farming families, Ms. Robinson acknowledged government support to date, including the recently announced fund to help offset the significant costs of isolating temporary foreign workers when they arrive in Canada, but she said much more needs to be done. As the unified voice advocating for Canadian farmers at the national level, the CFA highlighted the urgent issues farmers are facing today: Ongoing labour shortage and market predictability and how that is impacting farms and food processing – In addition to alarming uncertainty in their markets, unfortunately this spring many Canadian farmers do not have enough workers to consider planting a 2020 crop. Labour was already a critical issue before the pandemic and has now escalated to the point that both farmers and food processors are worried that even if planting does proceed, harvesting and processing may not be possible without sufficient labour. We face the possibility that crops will rot in the fields, as is now happening in other countries. Unexpected and increasing costs for farmers due to COVID-19 – Canadian farmers are dealing with significantly increased costs associated with purchasing the necessary PPE for their workers. In addition, due to meat processing plant closures, farmers are being forced to keep and feed their livestock for an extended period of time. Canadian farmers are feeling increasingly stressed, with some farmers so worried about the mounting challenges, they are strongly considering stopping their farming operations to stave off financial disaster. The CFA and its members are asking government to create an Emergency Fund or financial backstop so farmers in need can access funds to help them overcome these mounting costs. Canadian farmers need to hear a

clear commitment from government to instill necessary confidence for the 2020 planting season. CFA President Mary Robinson said, “As farmers, we have carefully considered this message today. We do not want to create panic. At the same time, it would be irresponsible not to sound the alarm about the realities Canadian farmers are facing. In times of economic crisis and global uncertainty, Canadians have always been able to depend on farmers to do what we do best – grow food. Today, Canadian farmers need immediate, meaningful help from our federal government to continue fulfilling that responsibility. Agriculture, the foundation of our overall food supply is, at this very moment in time, at a tipping point. If we do not, as a nation, address the rising challenges immediately, Canadian consumers could see a decrease in the amount and variety of food at their local grocery stores as well as higher prices, in the months ahead.”

ON THE

OPEN ROAD No fault insurance in Alberta - what it could mean As BC gets ready for it’s launch of no fault insurance for May 1st, injury lawyers there are saying the system is not going to be fair for those who are injured. I spoke with one lawyer today who has said that between COVID-19 and the new insurance law, he has scaled back his team by 15-20 positions. Here are some of the highlights that I pulled out of a Vancouver Sun from a March 2020 article: “No-fault insurance means people involved in vehicle crashes can no longer sue for damages — except in cases involving court convictions for offences like negligence, street racing, impaired driving, or in cases of faulty manufacturing, botched repairs and the over-service of alcohol by a business. Instead, people will receive benefits, payments for medical treatment and compensation directly from ICBC, using amounts set by the province depending on the type of injury.” “Money for pain and suffering will be eliminated for minor injuries; but for major injuries, cash compensation will be set by categories of benefits with maximum amounts set by ICBC, according to the government. Repairs to vehicles will still be handled by auto adjusters with traditional damage assessments.” “The model virtually eliminates the role of personal injury lawyers, who typically take one-third of the total amount awarded in a settlement and represent a powerful lobby group that continues to fight government reforms. They have argued a no-fault system would leave the most vulnerable victims, with the most catastrophic injuries, alone to face ICBC without legal help. The Trial Lawyers Association of BC said the change puts the rights of injured and vulnerable British Columbians “at grave risk.” “Today, this government is doubling down on its failed policy to take away the legal rights of British Columbians while protecting ICBC management who have gotten us into this mess in the first place,” said John Rice, association presi-

dent.” (https://vancouversun.com/news/localnews/live-b-c-to-switch-to-no-fault-auto-insurance-trim-rates-20-per-cent-in-2021/) Injury lawyers in Alberta are equally skeptical about the situation and are anxiously awaiting the legislation they know is coming. I spoke with one law firm that believes the writing is on the wall and their firm cited the article below as the reason they feel that it is just a matter of time that Albertan’s right to sue will be taken away. In March of 2020 an internal document was leaked according to the Insurance Business Mag: An internal document from Alberta’s treasury board and finance department has recommended that the province implement a no-fault auto insurance system. The document, which was obtained by Toronto Star, was compiled by actuary firm J.S. Cheng & Partners and insurance consulting firm Cameron & Associates Insurance Consultants, in consultation with representatives from the province’s treasury board and finance department. The report was conducted as part of a claims and costs study requested in 2018. The report called for a no-fault auto insurance system, wherein policyholders and their passengers are given compensation by their insurer without proof of fault following an accident. However, a no-fault auto insurance system also means claimants cannot sue for pain and suffering from the auto insurance system. The system effectively replaces the right to seek recovery through the civil justice system for a benefits schedule. According to the study, the root of Alberta’s insurance cost problems is the rising cost of settling injury claims in the province. The report found that individuals who have suffered at least one of the “top four” injuries – namely, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, concussions, temporomandibular joint injuries, and whiplash-associated disorder with chronic pain lasting more than six

R0011490554

months – are “more likely to be represented by a lawyer,” and that the percentage of claims from individuals with one or more of the injuries has gradually increased from 16% in 2010 to 30% in 2016. The study also revealed that in 2017, pain and suffering comprised 57% of the money paid for bodily injury claims. “The main cost driver within bodily injury claims is pain and suffering,” the study noted, adding that Albertans are “increasingly retaining legal representation to negotiate their compensation.” “Our recommendation is that the system can be modified to make it easier for a claimant to make a claim without the time consuming and costly legal process. The potential model in Alberta would look like this: Moving to a no-fault system would help alleviate the pressures being put on auto insurance costs in Alberta, and would be a unique model in the Canadian market, according to the head of the province’s brokers. “We feel this will kick some of the costs out of the system and also make the physical damage repairs happen a little quicker and a little more efficiently,” George Hodgson, CEO of the Insurance Brokers Association of Alberta (IBAA). “It means people get repairs and those sorts of things done to their car quicker, because you don’t have to have a fight between two insurance companies. If you get into an accident, whether it’s your fault or not, your insurance company will work at repairing your car.” The Alberta solution calls for policyholders to be able to buy-up for tort. “You have to pay extra to have the right to sue outside of the catastrophic injuries,” Hodgson told Canadian Underwriter. “The idea is that it will reduce claims costs while at the same time giving people the right to sue if they feel they need to.” https://www.canadianunderwriter.ca/brokers/what-a-made-inalberta-no-fault-auto-insurance-regime-wouldlook-like-1004175395/

Unharvested acres – a 5-point action plan Provincial estimates at the onset of winter 2019-20 had unharvested canola acres at 34 per cent in the Peace region and 16 per cent for Alberta overall. AFSC says “Cooler temperatures, early snow falls and precipitation during harvest season resulted in over one million insured acres remaining unharvested at the onset of winter. For Alberta farmers dealing with overwintered canola while also preparing to spray and seed, here are a few pointers: **Subhead** Five things farmers can do right now 1. Determine the quality of unharvested canola. Hand-thresh samples from crop in the field and take them to elevators or processors to get a preview of grade and quality. Based on these discussions with buyers, growers can get a better idea of the value of the crop – and whether the best move is to harvest it or destroy it. The Canadian Oilseed Processors Association (COPA), which represents the canola processors in Western Canada, knows that spring-harvested canola can be lower in weight, lower in oil content, higher in free fatty acid levels, and at increased risk of animal damage. Because of this uncertainty, oilseed processors will assess each sample on a case by case basis. Note that in 2017, the Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) surveyed samples of spring-har-

vested canola. Of the 161 canola samples submitted that spring, 34 per cent were No.1, 26 per cent were No.2, 20 per cent No.3 and 20 per cent sample. 2. Prepare to move it quickly. If overwintered canola is harvested, growers need a plan to store and move the canola. Warmer days will mean the canola could come off dry and conditioning the canola in bins should be easier with natural air, but keep a good eye on it. The same CGC 2017 program indicated that overwintered canola can degrade rapidly in storage. Monitoring bins is going to be another workload issue along with spring harvesting and planting. If growers are looking for marketing options, search for “companies that buy off-grade canola at canolawatch. org. 3. Draw up a calendar of action. Have a detailed work plan to get harvest, bin checks, spraying, and seeding all done in a timely manner. As a first step, check that inventory is on hand to complete (or least get a good start on) seeding, fertilizing and spraying. Then do up a calendar of action, with details on the jobs to do, who does them, and when. 4. Consider risk management options for the 2020 crop. Growers have some techniques at hand that can somewhat reduce the late-harvest risk for their 2020 canola crops. These include higher seeding rates, shallow seeding, and strategic placement and rates of fertilizer that can promote rapid emergence and earlier maturity.

Growers might also ask seed retailers about the availability of earlier-maturing hybrids if they want to plan now on spreading out the harvest season. Look for “Tips to help canola mature faster at canolawatch.org. 5. Talk to insurance providers. Communicate with crop insurance to get the latest requirements for fields in a potential claim position. Find out which fields require inspections and how to get them inspected in a timely manner so spring harvest is not delayed when conditions are right. Also note that wildlife damage claims are available. –Gregory Sekulic is an agronomy specialist with the Canola Council of Canada. He covers the Peace River region. Email sekulicg@canolacouncil.org. “CropChoice$ is a crop planning and risk management decision-making tool that can manage grains, oilseeds, pulses, specialty and forage crops to provide better crop planning decisions,” explains Manglai, production crops economist with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AF). The program helps forecast revenues and margins for that crop enterprise by using inputs and then calculating the probabilities of achieving the results. He notes that CropChoice$ helps the user make better management decisions about cropping enterprises because it identifies, measures and manages risk. “It also helps the user evaluate various risk management strategies such as changing the crop mix, buying crop insurance and negotiating land rental arrangements.” The latest edition features current crop insurance options, including updated risk coverage levels and insurance premiums from the Alberta Financial Services Corporation (AFSC). It also includes projected crop costs covering up to 40 dryland and irrigated crops depending on location. “CropChoice$ recognizes that future crop yields and prices cannot be known precisely,” he explains. “To reflect this, the user enters worst, best and most likely values for yields and prices. Varying yield and price information based on individual expectations will give a clearer and more accurate forecast than traditional linear budgets.” He adds that the user’s inputs for expected prices and yields in CropChoice$ helps forecast potential gross margins and profitability expectations for several crop plans. “It is a very easy program to set up and use, and the manual itself is an excellent resource. Once it is downloaded, double click on the icon, choose start from the welcome screen and get ready to create and compare crop plans.” The unprecedented circumstances in 2020 may have a significant impact on margins and revenues. CropChoice$ has been adjusted for current market conditions. These updates support Alberta Agriculture and Forestry’s commitment of risk management decision tools for the crop industry. The Peace Country Beef and Forage Association’s Research Farm is located 2 miles west of Fairview on Highway 64A, and north ¾ of a mile on Range Road 35. The majority of our research is on the south side of the farm, bordering the Fairview Airport. Spring soil tests were completed and fertilizer was applied based on recommendations for an average production result. All crops were seeded at commonly recommended seeding rates. Trials conducted at the Fairview Research Farm are as follows: Regional Silage Variety Trials - Barley, Oats, Triticale, and Pea/Cereal Mixtures This is a provincial variety trial that tests the growth potential and forage yield of various commonly available varieties of barley, oats, triticale, and pea/cereal mixes. Results of these trials are made available in the Alberta Seed Guide Alternative Cereals for Forage Production This trial tests the monocrop forage potential of various alternative cereal varieties commonly used in cocktail cover crops, including millet, annual ryegrass, wheat, and festulolim (a fescue/rye hybrid) Brassica & Broadleaf Crops for Forage Production This trial tests the monocrop forage potential of various forage brassicas and broadleaves commonly used in cocktail cover crops including: phacelia, turnip, radish, chicory, buckwheat, and more Alternative Legumes for Forage Production This trial tests the monocrop forage potential of various alternative legumes commonly used in cocktail cover crops including: annual vetches such as hairy vetch, annual clovers such as crimson clover, and more Intercropping Systems with and Without Nitrogen Fertilizer Application, and the Effects on Colonization of Mycorrhizal Fungi This project is being conducted by Alan Lee, a Master’s student with the U of A. Our very own Dr. Akim Omokanye is a co-supervisor on this project This is the first year of Alan’s two-year project measuring not only yield response to various intercrops and monocrops with top-up nitrogen applications, but also the soil and mycorrhizal fungi response.
