Dr. Kendall adds that most cases of lead exposure and poisoning in cattle that have been reported to the Office of the Chief Provincial Veterinarian have occurred in cattle grazing on pasture. “Lead exposure or poisoning, along with other toxins, must be reported to the Office of the Chief Provincial Veterinarian. It is important to reduce the risk of contamination of pasture and farmland with lead and to be diligent about keeping an eye out for any signs of buried batteries or other sources of lead.”

Abandoned and discarded batteries are usually found around abandoned vehicles and farm machinery, old dumps and disposal sites, homesteads, outbuildings and along fence lines.

NEXT ISSUE: FRIDAY, JUNE 26th, 2020

If the batteries have broken open, it is important to do a thorough job cleaning up not only the lead plates but also the soil around the battery.

He says that young calves are particularly attracted to the taste of lead and will actively seek it out. “Cattle that have consumed toxic levels of lead will exhibit seizures and sudden death. They may appear blind and wander aimlessly. Cattle that have consumed smaller amounts of lead will appear normal, but the lead levels in the body will make the meat and milk unsafe for human consumption until the lead has been eliminated. Animals that have died from lead toxicity must be safely buried to prevent lead toxicity in wildlife.”

“Discarded batteries that have gone through several freeze-thaw cycles and no longer have intact cases are the most dangerous,” says Dr. Joe Kendall, veterinary toxicologist with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. “The lead plates are exposed and easily accessible by the animals.”

Peace Region Pest Update Hello Peace Region! My name is Tory Snider and I work for the Peace Region Forage Seed Association. This growing season I will be helping Keith Uloth on the Pest Monitoring project and updating all of you as we go. Are you suspecting that your crops may be suffering from pest (insect, disease, weed) damage? This chart shows the stages in which many species of insects are relevant to the canola growing season. Check it out to get an idea of what your crop may be at risk for throughout the growing season! Our goal this summer for

Canola is to focus on monitoring Flea beetles, Swede Midge (not yet in this region), Bertha Army Worms, Diamond Back Moths, Lygus Bugs just to name a few and how they are affecting crops. WITH help from local producers we have established monitoring sites for these insects at six locations around the Peace Region and will be monitoring them weekly. Each week we will be gathering data to assist producers regarding pest damage and prevention, also to inform researchers of pest populations. In the future, you can expect to hear about a pest

each week that is particularly problematic at a crop stage, and in contrast we will also identify some beneficial insects that help protect your crop. Along with this we have included the link for our BC Peace Agri Weather Network site where you can check out CURRENT weather recordings in live time from various locations (21 sites) in the BC Peace Region (http:// bcpeaceweather.com/). Stay tuned for next weeks Pest Update which will identify the Cutworm, signs of their crop damage, and more!

Time for another Peace Region Pest update

Breakfast Brief VOLATILITY IN U.S. DOLLAR, LOONIE MIXING UP TRADE FLOWS (Farmlead.com, June 5, 2020) Grain markets this morning are almost all green as U.S. grain prices are seeing the benefit from a weaker U.S. Dollar, but that’s also pushing other currencies higher, including the Canadian Loonie and Brazilian Real. Also supporting grain markets are some drying conditions that are forecasted for the Corn Belt and while the initial heat will help stress the crop and get it going, if it persists too long, weather premiums will continue to expand. The tit-for-tat game of trade and travel restrictions continues to between the U.S. and China, with the most recent move coming from the White House of placing additional restrictions for Chinese state media organizations that have America-based operations. This includes the #1 and #2 state-owned media groups, China Central Television (CCTV) and China News Service and would added to the five other Chinese media outlets who had restrictions placed on them back in February when China expelled a few U.S. journalists from Beijing. On a similar note, Japan and the U.S. are already subsidizing companies who are looking to repatriate manufacturing back home, or at least diversify it out of China and into other Asian regions. The impact could be substantial and probably best summarized by a National Interest piece, which quoted the Nikkei’s Katsuji Nakazawa, “If the U.S. and Japan, the world’s biggest and third-biggest economies respectively, move away from China, it will have a huge impact on the world’s second-biggest economy.” Speaking of trade flows, India has temporarily decreased its tariff on lentil exports from Canada from 33% to 11%. As the tariff on U.S. lentil exports has remained at 33%, it obviously opens the door for more lentil exports from Canada to India. However, the tariff decrease is said to be temporary and I remain cognizant of the downside risk in lentil prices, given expanded acreage in Western Canada and good monsoon rains forecasted for India. Accordingly, I’m making more incremental, 10% sales today for both old and new crop lentils.

Tory Snider

As mentioned in Wednesday’s Breakfast Brief which discussed the downside risk in lentil and flax prices in detail, there are nearly 40 credit-verified lentil buyers on our free Combyne Marketplace, looking for both old and new crop. With Combyne, you are actually promoting the sale you’re looking to make by listing it; this is much more efficient & effective compared to making phone call after phone call. Instead of the latter, listing your deal on Combyne can help inform all your current trading partners (and potentially some new ones), about the deals you’re looking to potentially make.

Greetings everyone, we hope your growing season is starting! For those who have seeded or are beginning to, we should be keeping an eye out for signs of Flea Beetle damage to the crops. In the Peace region we see Flea Beetles in three kinds; Striped, Crucifer, and Hop. As seen in the picture below, the Crucifer is a blue/black, Hops are black and the Striped one explains itself. The reason they are called Flea Beetles is because they jump like a flea when disturbed. The meal of choice for a Flea Beetle is the cotyledon or first true leaf of canola or other cruciferous plants. We are particularly concerned about Flea Beetle damage during the early stages of the growing season when the first true leaves are coming out, there may also be damage on the stem if winds are high. If the crop makes it past that stage without meeting the threshold, the damage caused by Flea Beetles is much less

U.S. Dollar Helps Soybean Prices (Sort Of) Currencies are getting a little more volatility as the U.S. Dollar continues to see a sell-off amongst investors, with yesterday being its 7th straight day of losses against other major currencies. This has helped the Brazilian Real appreciate, which is the main reason behind Chinese grain buyers snapping up more American soybean exports at a time when their Beijing bosses are telling them not to do so. Worth mentioning, though, is that China still bought about 10 boats of Brazilian soybean exports this month. With one calendar quarter (13 weeks) left to go in the U.S. soybeans’ 2019/20 crop year, total shipments are tracking 3% higher than last year, with 35.92 MMT sailed (or 1.32 billion bushels if converting metric tonnes into bushels). Obviously though, as you can tell from the chart below, actual shipments of U.S. soybean exports have slowed down significantly over these last few weeks. Nonetheless, the weaker U.S. Dollar and buying buzz has helped catalyze a nice rally for soybean prices, which have gained 35 cents since Sunday night’s open on the futures board in Chicago, and are now sitting at levels not seen since late March/early April. That said, one People’s Republic think tank, the CNGOIC, said that China’s soybean imports for their 2019/20 crop year (which ends in September) is seen now at 91 MMT. This is a 1 MMT improvement from their previous forecast, and a healthy bump from the 82.5 MMT imported in the 20181/19 crop year. Private consultancy, Shanghai JC Intelligence Co., says that Chinese soybean imports could continue to grow, depending on how quickly the Chinese hog herd recovers. Put simply, with sky-high pork prices in China, more players are either entering the market, or ramping up their production.

The Resiliency of the Canadian Loonie Similar to the Brazilian Real, the U.S. Dollar’s slide has helped the Canadian Loonie appreciate back above 74 cents for the first time since early March. This is an impressive improvement from the low of 68.2¢ U.S. Dollar that the Loonie hit back in mid-March (it fell by nearly 10% in 2 weeks), but with oil prices improving again, this has helped the Canadian currency make up some this lost ground. Obviously, this is detrimental to the international purchasing power of buyers of Canadian agricultural exports, and this is why we’ve seen canola prices pull back over the last few weeks. With investors starting to look past the COVID-19 fears and think about a V-shaped recovery, U.S. stock markets have also performed very well. This is, however, is largely because the U.S. stock market has healthy weighting towards health care and technology, two of the industries that are doing okay in this recession. Conversely, since the Canadian stock market is more closely tied to commodities (i.e. oil), it’s been slow to seen gains, until this week that is. Of course, since the Loonie is looked at as a petro-currency, stronger oil prices will inherently help the Canadian currency.

imperative to the crop’s yield. Research has shown that annual rotation of crop type within a field from year to year can drastically reduce damage susceptibility for canola by Flea Beetles. Damage by Flea Beetles occurs predominantly on the cotyledon but they may also eat the stem and cause the plant to fall. The picture on the left shows what you can look for when watching for typical Flea Beetle damage. As for economic threshold, a producer should become concerned about spraying insecticide when the leaf is about 25% defoliated. Once the defoliation is past 25%, there is a decrease in the ability of the plants recovering from the damage. Be sure to check out our Facebook page: Peace Region Forage Seed Association – Pest Monitoring and the Prairie Pest Network Blog on pest issues throughout the Prairies for more information. That’s all from us this week, we will catch you next time

Whether you’ve never grown pulses or haven’t grown them in a while, we’ve got 10 good reasons why you should think about growing pulses. 1. Pulses reduce your input costs. Pulses fix their own nitrogen, so there’s no need for the added cost of nitrogen for your crop. 2. Pulses spread your workload. The growing season for pulse crops differs somewhat from that of other crops, in some cases allowing you to seed and harvest earlier or later than other crops. 3. Pulses give you diversified marketing options. You can grow pulses for export or domestic use for the human consumption, animal feed, or fractionation markets. 4. Pulses break disease cycles in your field. A four-year crop rotation that incorporates pulses can reduce incidences of disease in your fields. 5. Pulses provide a second-year yield boost. Studies have shown that higher yields and quality of canola (15-96 per cent increase in yield) and cereals (41-52 per cent increase in barley yields, 20-47 per cent increase in wheat yields) can be seen in the year following pulse crops. 6. Pulses grow in a variety of production systems. You have a lot of options when it comes to growing pulses, as they can be seeded with a variety of equipment and grow in both conventional and zero till systems under irrigation or on dry land. 7. Pulses are profitable. Prices for pulse crops are very competitive with other crop types, and reduced input costs help contribute to a healthy bottom line. 8. Pulses improve your soil tilth. Pulses make your soil healthier by putting nutrients, including nitrogen, back into the soil. 9. Pulses promote soil conservation and sustainable farming practices. Crops like pulses that fix nitrogen can help reduce CO2 emissions from agriculture, and because of their water use efficiency and ability to grow in zero till systems, pulses may have a lower environmental footprint than other crop types. 10. Pulses are an up-and-coming crop type that grows every year. Pulse acres in Alberta have hit the 2.4 million mark and continue to grow. With increased acres come increased marketing options, making pulses an up-and-coming crop type with plenty of room to grow. Any way you look at it, pulses are good for your farm.

Ag in Motion Discovery Plus announces Living Labs and puts call out for participants Organizers of the new Ag in Motion Discovery Plus digital event are offering a way for producer groups, researchers and academics to bring their field crop research to farmers through a new online platform. “COVID-19 has hit everyone in agriculture hard, and that is particularly true in the area of canceled summer farm field tours,” says Laura RanceUnger, Vice President of Content at Glacier FarmMedia. “Field tours are such an important way to keep farmers posted on the latest vari-

etal and crop protection research in the field. In the absence of field days, we’re inviting applied and farmer-directed research groups to reach their farmers through Ag in Motion Discovery Plus.” Ag in Motion has been reimagined this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic causing restrictions for gatherings of large groups of farmers. With Ag in Motion Discovery Plus, there’s now a comprehensive online meeting place where Western Canadian farmers can find the lat-

est in agriculture products, important crop and livestock information, equipment comparisons, news and more. The online Living Labs area of Ag in Motion Discovery Plus will include presentations from participating research-based groups to share results from on-the-ground research across the prairies. A schedule of sessions will be posted so producers can log into the online platform and bookmark the particular research they are interested in hear-

7

ing about. They will also be able to ask questions during the presentation, connect directly with researchers through the platform and share their input during sessions with other participants through session chats. Ag in Motion Discovery Plus organizers are calling on groups such as crop commissions, research farms and producer-led groups enrolled in the Agriculture-Applied Research Management (Agri-ARM) program to participate in this free Living Labs opportunity. Interested parties must apply by Monday, June 22, 2020 by contacting info@ aginmotion.ca for details on how to apply. Spaces are limited, so it’s best to apply early. “We’re really excited to join with researchers and their partners in the field to offer timely information from prairie research projects through our online platform. While we can’t replace the field tour experience, we can play a role in keeping researchers and farmers connected,” says Rance-Unger. “Ag in Motion Discovery Plus is really reimagining what collaboration can look like among farm groups, academics, researchers and industry partners across Western Canada.” Ag in Motion Discovery Plus takes place July 21 – 25, 2020 as a free online event for farmers to get a unique vantage point on current agricultural information. Topics include farmer-led research, virtual crop and livestock tours, results from the Glacier FarmMedia Discovery Farm, farm equipment and technology demonstrations, new product launches and high-profile keynote speakers.

12 The Northern Horizon, June 12, 2020

Glenn Stewart holds the bar and more I wanted to share an experience that I had just lately that I felt extremely privileged to be apart of. You’ve heard the saying “Holding the Bar” or “Hold the Bar High.” It is having a standard or a level that yourself, other people, or things can reach for. You can hold your own bar or someone else can hold the imaginary bar that we are trying to reach for. If the bar is held high it is tougher to reach but when you get there you will have really accomplished something. Often many are trying to pull the bar down to their level to something that’s easier or seems more fun or it’s what we want, but often it is not what we need. I was visiting a good friend of mine that has been training/boxing with a professional boxing coach. He asked if I’d like to go for a lesson and that he would ask a favor to get me in. All the people in the gym are trained or training to be professional boxers with careers in the ring. I said that I would love to. It would give me a chance to burn off the weekend’s events and clean out the carburetor. I was warned that there’s no goofing around and they are serious about what they do. I got 5 minutes of instruction in the front room from my buddy so I’d have an idea what to expect when we got there and I’m getting more excited by the second. I had sparred in my younger days with a golden gloves champion half my size and he would pummel me at will, but I’d land the odd one and always leave exhausted. So I can’t wait to get to the gym, get the gloves on and start swinging. We arrive at the gym. It’s down stairs in an old building. It totally looks like a boxing gym that Rocky trained in. First thing that happened was the trainer hands me a skipping rope and says ok skip. When the bell rings you can rest when the bell goes again start skipping again. You have 3 rounds of skipping. Wow, ok that sounds good I guess, a little warm-up before all the punching. So, I make it through the 3 rounds of skipping, but, it was not pretty, and I was glad nobody was watching but the three of us. So, the trainer says ok time to wrap your hands, YES !!! Now we are talking. We were finally getting serious. My hands got wrapped and he said “get in the ring.” The adrenaline is starting to flow. Then he says “we are going to work on your footwork and balance.” Geez, well this can’t take long I‘ve been walking all my life. Turns out, if I want to box I was going to have to learn to walk all over again

and find my balance because I really didn’t have any. Back and forth I went across the ring trying to stay straight, keep my feet the right distance apart, don’t walk heel toe, slide my feet, and keep them flatter. I was struggling to do this even remotely right. “Now”, he said “get more sideways, you are too big a target and keep your hands by your jaw. Every minute, or less, he was back saying I was standing too square and my hands were too low. He’d say, “I just knocked you out and I could easily push you over”, which he would prove minus the knock out part. So, I was supposed to try to jab, step, jab, step. I know I looked and felt like a robot that hasn’t been oiled in, well never. Then he said, “Slow down your trying to go to fast”. I thought I was moving like a snail already. I was shocked at this point at how much I could practice these things and how ridiculous I must look. The whole time though I’m still secretly wanting to get to the punching and getting punched part. I practiced these techniques for a few rounds listening for the bells to end each round. I was starting to get a clock in my head as to when the round would end without looking at a clock. Learning things I didn’t know I was learning. Sure would be handy for the real thing.

do; he just knew what I needed and what would benefit me much more in the future. He was a professional.

He said, “ok, good start, lets get the gloves on”, and asks my friend to get in the ring. Finally, here we go. He said he wanted me to wear a body protector vest thing, you know like you see in the movies. I figured so my buddy can’t beat me up too bad, he’s been training for 3 years. So, the next thing the coach said was to cover my jaw, move around the ring like he showed me, then stop often, lift my arms in the air and my buddy will hit me 3 times. Then move a bit, stop lift your arms and he will hit you 3 more times. Well, this is not at all the plan I had in my head when I said yes to this fun boxing gig.

Glenn offers year round educational horsemanship programs at his facility near Fort Saint John, BC and is available to travel and conduct clinics. Currently accepting bookings for the Winter Front Row Seating, 2017 summer programs and High and Wild Horsemanship Adventure. For more information on Glenn and The Horse Ranch visit www.thehorseranch.com. If you are looking for quality Natural Horsemanship Equipment go to www.naturalhorsemanshipequipment.com

The hour and a half was a lesson in self-control, going against my instincts, and working on developing skills that will help way beyond the ring. I never hit anybody that lesson but I learned more about boxing than any other time in a gym. I could go to other gyms and spar the day I got there, do exactly what I wanted. Thank goodness I didn’t accidently go to one of those. I will be back to the professional coach whenever I’m in the area and as long as they will let me through the doors. We all have the ability to hold the bar for ourselves and for others. Mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, business owners, employees, coaches, ect. It’s not always easy to hold the bar, it gets heavy at times but I know there are many people that are happy out there that someone is holding the bar. I salute to all of you for Holding the Bar. What’s this got to do with horsemanship? Everything. Glenn Stewart

It turns out I don’t move correctly, my balance is off, I punch wrong, my hands are too low, my elbow goes out, I was hitting through the bag instead of snapping it just at the end of my reach, and I don’t breath right. Long story short, I have a lot to learn if I was to ever be remotely good. Doing what I wanted to do would just ingrain more terrible habits and making myself worse rather than better. I went there thinking it would be fun to do certain things. The coach didn’t care what I wanted to

Weighing in on bovine bloat Dr. Carmen Schneider Bloat or Ruminal Tympany is an abnormal distension of the rumen and reticulum due to excessive fermentation gases. Although all species can get bloated bellies, true ruminal tympany is specifically a ruminant issue including cows, goats, sheep, and camelids. There are two different forms of bloat: frothy bloat and free gas bloat. In both types the issue is inability to clear the air that is naturally created from the process of fermentation but the cause is very different and must be investigated for proper treatment. Frothy bloat is also known as pasture bloat and is due to ingestion of high legume pastures such as alfalfa, red clover, white clover, sweet clover, and winter wheat. Ingestion of these creates a foam mixed in with the rumen content trapping air bubbles in it which does not allow eructation of the air. It is more likely when consuming the more succulent part of the plant. Rainfall and lush growth are also risk factors as well as switching them from poor quality feed to lush feed suddenly. The highest risk time is spring when they are getting turned out from being on hay to lush spring growth. This risk can be offset by giving them access to small parts with portable fencing while also giving access to hay or transitioning them through predominantly grass pasture before going into a high legume pasture. Another option is leaving grass to stockpile in the fall (not grazing it down) so that in spring the pasture is a mix of luscious pasture and older drier pasture. It can also be seen with alfalfa hay or finely chopped feed. There are also feed and water additives such as ionophores (rumnensin etc.) or Alfasure that can help prevent bloat. Frothy bloat in feedlot cattle generally looks a little different. It tends to happen from feed that is too finely chopped, not enough roughage in the ration, high grain level finishing rations, or sudden changes in ration. Generally entire pens are affected and it is relatively easily fixed by assessing the ration. A chronic bloating calf without an underlying cause can sometimes improve on its own over time but they generally don’t gain well. Free gas bloat is an inability to eructate due to a functional issue outside of the rumen which falls into 3 different categories with different underlying causes. There can be a physical obstruction in the esophagus such as a foreign body (apples, potatoes, etc) or a growth causing obstruction. There can also be a functional issue

with the esophagus such as a tetanus infection. The third category is a functional issue with the nerves controlling eructation. The most common cause of this is chronic pneumonia causing damage to the nerve. Hardware disease can also cause this syndrome. If they have been down for a while that can also impede their ability to eructate. Signs are usually the same no matter which type of bloat it is. Abdominal distension starts on the left side but if severe enough will also distend the right side. They are often uncomfortable; kicking at their belly or getting up and down frequently. As it progresses they will start to have trouble breathing. They are usually down by the time we find them and sudden death is often the only sign. If found dead, keep in mind that secondary bloat will happen in all dead animals so finding a bloated animal does not mean bloat was the cause

of death. There are signs on post mortem that can indicate if bloat was present before death. Treatment somewhat differs depending on underlying cause and severity. A severe bloat is a medical emergency and needs to be addressed quickly. The first thing to do is tube the cow with a stomach tube. This must be done carefully as damage to the larynx or esophagus can cause additional issues. Tubing also aids in telling the difference between free gas bloat and frothy bloat depending on what comes out of the tube. The tube can also be used to administer anti-foaming agents such as mineral oil or anti-gas emulsion. After administration it is helpful to get the cow moving around. In a pinch dish soap can also be used. With frothy bloat cows should be removed from pasture immediately and roughage offered. In a chronic bloater the underlying cause should be investigated and treated specifically. If the animal is dying and starting to have trouble breathing emergency trocharization may be needed. Use a sterile/clean trochar or a very clean knife and puncture the most distended aspect of the abdomen on the left side. There will be a high chance of infection so a veterinarian should still be contacted. As with many other disease processes, prevention through pasture and herd health management is key with bloat issues.

What’s your herd health plan?

If your fall marketing decision involves retaining calves, keeping heifer replacements, or purchasing calves for feeding, there are simple ways to ensure maximum feedlot health. Excellent cow vaccination programs and cow herd nutritional status are important factors. A good nutritional program is vital to allow calves to consume enough energy during a low consumption period to maintain a healthy immune system. A good vaccination program for the calves is also very important. Our veterinarians work with you to determine an appropriate herd health program to suit your needs. Please give us a call and we will set up a herd health plan with you! Small Animal: 250-782-5616 Large Animal: 250-782-1080 238-116th Avenue, Dawson Creek, BC Across from the Fairgrounds

CCFI launches “It’s Good Canada” campaign The Canadian Centre for Food Integrity (CCFI) has launched their latest campaign “It’s Good Canada” which was created to celebrate the work of everyone involved in Canada’s food system and to show that it is designed to ensure good quality food makes its way to the plates of all Canadians and families around the world. This is a long term, public advocacy campaign for Canadian agriculture. Public and Stakeholder Engagement (PSE) provided beef industry footage for the promotional video and worked with industry representatives Bob Lowe and Sandra Vos to submit their personal stories as Canadian beef producers. In the “Our Partners” section, the public facing Canadian Beef logo has been added. Currently the campaign is running on social media but there are plans to broadcast the promotional video on national tv if enough funds are raised. Learn more at Itsgoodcanada.ca.

Fields needed for fusarium study -

study looks at fusarium head blight in Western Canada The 5-year project - Developing a Risk Model to Improve the Effectiveness of Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) Mitigation in Western Canadian Cereal - was launched last year. Researchers need more fields in Alberta to survey this year. FHB is a fungal disease that affects cereal crops by reducing productivity and producing mycotoxins in grain. However, using farm management decisions for controlling FHB to improve crop production, lower toxin levels and marketability by as little as 1%, can add greater returns for the producer following harvest. Greg Daniels, senior plant pathology technologist at Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, says that the project aims to use local weather data, crop variety resistance levels and seeding date to develop a

specifically western Canadian model for disease development. It will be used to create a publically available viewer that will help with disease prevention and management. “To build the model, we need to collect data across the FHB affected areas of Alberta in spring wheat, winter wheat, 2-row barley, and durum fields,” he explains. “We currently have enough fields of spring wheat for 2020, but we still need winter wheat and durum producers in general, as well as barley growers for some of the FHB resistance classes.” Researchers are looking for fields in areas where FHB has been found and are located as close as possible to weather stations. Participating producers will be asked to set aside a small area to remain unsprayed with fungicides at anthesis. A student technician,

following stringent biosecurity protocols, will need access the field 3 times to rate the crop for disease and to collect a small harvest sample. Producers will receive an initial summary of results and analysis of the samples from their fields. The project is led by the University of Manitoba, funded by the Western Grains Research Foundation and supported by provincial agriculture ministries, including Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. National High School Rodeo Finals still a go, Canadian Finals to be determined Just because there won’t be any local rodeos this summer doesn’t mean Peace region high school athletes won’t get a chance to compete one last time. The National High School Rodeo Finals, originally set for Lincoln, Nebraska, were postponed on May 29, as the state said it would be unable to play host. However, the finals are back on as of June 5, with the NHSRF now taking place July 17 to 23 in Guthrie, Oklahoma. Travelling during these times may prove difficult, especially in crossing the border, but the High School Rodeo of B.C. Board has gone ahead in choosing its national teams. Usually, the teams would be decided following the B.C. Senior High School Rodeo Finals, but since those didn’t take place, the board has chosen a team, which was voted upon and discussed. The athletes who made the team will be announced when the official decision has been made. A decision has yet to be made on the fate of the Canadian High School Rodeo Finals, scheduled for July 31 to August 2 in Merritt, B.C. The Board of Directors are expected to have a decision by Wednesday, June 17.

The CCA on President’s comments concerning imports The Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA), along with our North American counterparts, is fully committed to continue enhancing the strength of the North American beef industry under the newly negotiated and soon-to-be implemented United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which maintains open and duty-free trade,” notes CCA President, Bob Lowe. “There is no doubt that we have an integral trade relationship with the United States – we are excellent trade partners – in fact, we have the largest two-way beef trade in the world, and it continues to be mutually beneficial.”

Canadian and American beef producers alike depend on reliable trade partners to attain the highest value for their products, whether it is beef or cattle. “For us in the beef industry, we must be able to get each cut of meat to the consumer who is willing to pay top dollar for it,” continued Lowe. “Exporting the cuts of meats that aren’t as valued in Canada as they are in other parts of the world generates an additional $600 CDN/ per animal for our beef producers, that’s the importance of trade.”

New funding opportunity to promote innovation available to cattle producers This week, the Government of Alberta announced $40 million in funding for Emissions Reduction Alberta’s (ERA) Food, Farming, and Forestry Challenge. The goal of this funding is to accelerate innovation and stimulate growth in three vital sectors of Alberta’s economy – agriculture, agri-food and forestry.

In addition, ERA will host an informational webinar on June 29, 2020, where they will provide an overview of the funding opportunity, including scope and eligibility of the call, the submission process, and timelines for decisions. Participants will also have the chance to ask specific questions

to help prepare an application. To register, https:// register.gotowebinar.com/register/1149649765304 829963?source=Newsletter The deadline to submit funding applications is August 27, 2020.

Farmers, ranchers, industry, and innovators can access these funds to support their efforts to ensure sustainable food and fibre supplies and navigate the economic repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic. The ERA will fund up to $5 million per project. Funding is being sourced from the carbon price paid by Large Final Emitters (LFE’s) in Alberta through the Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) fund. Youth Employment and Skills Program helps create new youth positions in ag sector Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the Government of Canada is taking steps to ensure the resilience of the food supply chain and to provide support to keep the agriculture sector strong. The Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, today announced an investment of up to $9.2 million to enhance the Youth Employment and Skills Program (YESP) and fund up to 700 new positions for youth in the agriculture industry. Indigenous applicants and those applicants hiring a youth facing barriers are eligible for funding of up to 80 per cent of their costs. Eligible applicants include producers, agri-businesses, industry associations, provincial and territorial governments, Indigenous organizations and research facilities.
