Organizers are also offering alternative ways that farms and ranches can participate during the weekend, such as instructional videos and virtual tours. Because of COVID-19, organizers are continuously communicating with government officials, making sure that Open Farm Days is in accordance with provincial regulations. Organizers can also help connect participating farms and ranches interested in culinary events with corresponding AHS staff for their region. Open Farm Days showcases Alberta’s agriculture industry and growing rural tourism sector. Host farms open their gates to share their agricultural experiences with their urban neighbours and to help them understand where their food comes from. In 2019, more than 150 host farms were part of Open Farm Days, and 29 culinary events helped connect urban and rural Albertans. Host farms have included traditional farms, livestock - bison, cattle, alpaca, sheep, llama, goat, poultry - farms and ranches, organic operations, corn mazes, wineries, meaderies, craft breweries, stables, petting zoos, along with honey, fruit, vegetable, grain and u-pick farms.

Delayed weed control? Make it count
Breakfast Brief WHEAT PRICES, & WEATHER QUESTIONED (Farmlead.com, June 19,2020) Grain markets this morning are mostly green, alongside outside markets, as it’s a bit of a risk-off Friday. Canola prices are finding a good bid this morning, as the oilseed broke through some resistance.
By Ian Epp For canola fields that have not been sprayed this year, effective weed control may come down to one herbicide application – so make that application count. Start by assessing the weed and crop stage situation in each field. Answers to the following questions can determine the course of action, including rates, tank mixes and more: How many weeds are present? How big are they? What species are they? What is the crop stage? What is the crop stage relative to the weed stage? If weed population is greater than the crop population and weeds are more advanced or at the same stage as the crop, the highest available rate of herbicide may be required to provide the best weed control. Know the weeds present, and know the herbicide rate required to truly control those weeds. If you have a lot of grassy weeds in a Liberty Link canola field, you will want to tank mix clethodim with the Liberty (glufosinate) at a rate suited to the infestation level. Or, if it’s a Clearfield or Falco crop, you may want to spray grassy weed herbicide
Otherwise, weather, COVID-19, and Chinese trade issues continue top the headlines and attention from traders. For the latter, top U.S. trade negotiator, Robert Lighthizer, told Congress that he’s confident that China will make good on the Phase One trade deal and purchase $36.5 Billion in U.S. agricultural goods (they’re at about $10B right now if we include sales AND what’s already sailed). If China does buy more American, then we should expect soybean prices to improve a bit. Weather could have a say on those soybean prices, though, as the most recent 3-month outlook from the NOAA says conditions are going to be decent. In it, expectations are for above-average temperatures AND precipitation over the next 3 months for most areas of American crop production regions. The NOAA noted below-normal rainfall could be seen in parts of the Northern Plains and Pacific Northwest though. A few weeks after Huawei CFO Meng Wangzhou lost her fight to avoid extradition from Canada to the U.S., the Chinese government has officially charged two Canadians of espionage. Of course, in typical Chinese government form, no details of the espionage were shared, just that “the criminal facts are clear and the evidence is verified and sufficient”. This comes on the heels of China being blamed by industry experts for a recent massive cyber-attack on Australia’s critical infrastructure of government, political organizations, and even hospitals! Between the malfeasance of not sharing with the world that COVID-19 was serious and spreading fast, the latest clash that killed 20 Indian soldiers in the Himalayas, the cyber-attack on Australia, and now the likely lifetime imprisonment and possible execution of two Canadians, China is stoking a lot of fires right now. As the world asks for more accountability from its leaders and government institutions, China’s misdeeds are slipping through the cracks (which is just want they want).
Wheat Prices Continue Downturn
An updated forecast from Australia verified that producers in the Land Down Undaa are putting in a significantly larger amount of wheat in their paddocks this year. ABARES (Australia’s version of the USDA or Agriculture Canada) is expecting 26.7 MMT of wheat to be harvested in the 2020/21 crop year, off 32.1M acres. This is 76% improvement year-over-year in wheat production, but just a 27% improvement in acres, meaning that most of the increase is coming from yields, which are expected to bump up nearly 40% year-over-year to 30.5 bushels per acre. As mentioned in Monday’s Breakfast Brief, the wheat harvest in many areas looks big – Canada, U.S., Russia, Australia – but Europe and Ukraine are the areas to watch for going forward. We should also be cognizant of wet weather negatively impacting the crop that’s about to be harvested in areas of the Black Sea, especially Ukraine which is already expecting a smaller crop than last year. On the flipside, the Agricultural Market Information System (AMIS) is expecting some tough competition for wheat in the feed category, namely from corn.
early and save the partner broadleaf herbicide for a second pass. If cleavers are a problem, a tank mix with quinclorac may be recommended. When using a tank mix, pay attention to the mixing order. It often changes based on the products in the mix. Talk to your retailer or check with the company for the mixing order specific to your tank mix. This is often critically important to avoid clumping and other major issues. And finally, if the crop is moving toward the end of its herbicide spray window, it’s most likely that the crop will be sprayed only once. Under such circumstances, maximize herbicide efficacy by putting together an effective tank mix, choosing the higher herbicide application rate, and spraying under good conditions. For more details on rates, tank mixes and timing for each canola system, please search for the article “Weed control strategies for each HT system” at canolawatch.org. While there, you can sign up to receive the timely Canola Watch email updates throughout the growing season. –Ian Epp is an agronomy specialist with the Canola Council of Canada.
Also keep in mind that hedge funds are still sitting on a large short position in Minneapolis HRS wheat prices, and if the dryness in parts of U.S. Northern Plains and Western Canada persists, we could see some short-covering. Over the past 90 days, parts of central and southern Saskatchewan have received as little as 35% of their usual precipitation. Parts of Manitoba got some heavy rains this week, unfortunately flooding more than a few fields. In southern Alberta, irrigated areas that rely on the Milk River won’t have the same luxury this year after infrastructure failed in Montana that diverts water north to Canada failed. Chicago wheat prices dropped to their lowest values since September 2019 and poised headed for a third straight week of losses due to benign weather and ample exportable supplies heading into the new crop year. Also pressuring the complex is Russia’s wheat exports being quota-free until at least December but quotas will be likely introduced for the second half of the crop year (January to June 2021), according to the Russian Ag Ministry. The restrictions are meant to allow for the domestic market to have enough wheat and not see food prices increase (read: food inflation). What this basically translates to is Russia will oversupply the world with wheat for the next 4-5 months, with the usual destinations being Asian and Middle Eastern markets. Thereafter, Australia will probably help fill a few demand holes, and then we’ll see the seasonal hand-to-mouth buying that Asian millers have reverted to these last few years. We’ll also continue to watch Argentina, who is expected to get some good rains over key wheat-growing areas next week. Despite that, the Buenos Aires Grains Exchange has reduced its estimate of acres planted this year by 300,000 to 16.56M. So far, just under 2/3s of the wheat crop there has been planted. Have a great weekend! To growth Brennan Turner CEO FarmLead TF: 1-855-332-7653 help@combyne.ag @Combyne or @FarmLead on Twitter

Using BRIX to assess pasture quality By Peace Country Beef & Forage Association Staff Do you have a refractometer in your toolbox in your truck? Maybe you need one! It is a neat tool that we can use to measure the sugar levels in plants and forages. Refractometers have been used for years in the food and processing industry for quality control purposes, and now there are nice, small hand-held models that we can take to the field with us! All we need is the refractometer and a garlic press like what you’d use in your kitchen! The sampling process is quite simple, you simply pick or trim some plants that you would like to test, roll them into a ball in your hands for a few seconds and pop it in the garlic press. These handheld models work by placing some juice from the test plant onto the glass prism at the end of the unit. Once the plastic cover is flipped over the juice and compresses the juices, you can look through the looking glass and measure the sugar content of the forage. In the picture in the middle of the page, we see a sample of a handheld refractometer as well as a sample of the reading that we can obtain from the tool. Each scale on the refractometer relates to one gram of sugar per 100 grams of liquid. So what is a “good” Brix measurement? How can we incorporate it into our grass and feed management? Using Brix measurements in management decisions actually started with beef producers in the States a few years ago. Brix is the measure of the total dissolved solids in a liquid. Most of these dissolved solids extracted from growing plants is carbohydrates in the form of sucrose sugar. The rest is simple sugars such as glucose and fructose, as well as minerals. Typically, Brix levels will be higher in healthy stands on biologically active, healthy soil. For more information on PCBFA’s soil health research, please visit our website peacecountrybeef.ca/trial-reports If you have attended any of our Grass-Fed events with speakers such as Dr. Allen Williams, Dr. Anibal Prodomingo, Nicole Masters, and Gabe Brown, or have done much research into the subject, you would have heard about the importance of sugar content in forages and how it relates to gain. The basic principle is: plant sugars provide energy to grazing cattle. Therefore, the higher the Brix reading, the higher the sugar content, and should therefore indicate a higher nutritional value in the plant. Findings in the US show that Brix levels of alfalfa are typically at an average of 8, with a reading of 22 being considered excellent. In cereals, 18 is considered excellent while 10 is a good average. Regardless of the plant species, the highest energy levels will always be in the lower stems and leaves of the plant. In alfalfa, the absolute highest brix levels come from the juice of the blossoms. Dr Anibal Pordomingo has done some work relating Brix and forage quality in his studies in Argentina. He has found that the best ration for finishing cattle on grass is when soluble carbohydrates —sugars –and crude protein are balanced with protein between 14-18% and sugars being at least 15%. He has also found that

young, vegetative plants tend to be too high in protein and too low in energy to provide good gains in a grass finishing program. As plants approach the flowering stage, they are in the peak of their sugar production. So with this information, we can start to make informed management decisions based on the sugar content in our forages. Research by the USDA Agriculture Research Service out of Idaho has found that sugar levels in growing plants are at their peak around 6pm in the evening before sunset, and at their lowest first thing in the morning. This is because the plant has been photosyn-thesizing all day, and has made itself a lot of sugars. Overnight, these sugars will flow down to the roots into the plant’s reserves. So if you are on a grassfed, managed grazing system, this highlights the importance of having cattle out grazing fresh forage later in the day. This can also help time when we cut hay or silage - especially if feed quality is a concern. At Utah State University, researchers experimented with feeding two groups of dairy cows rations of 40% alfalfa hay—one cut early in the morning, and one cut in the early evening. The cows that were on the ration cut later in the day consumed 6 pounds more per day of the ration and produced 7.5 pounds more milk than the group on the morning cut hay. This increase in animal performance can be related back to the increased sugar content in the plants at the time of day the hay was cut. These are exciting results as we can also use Brix readings for not only making pasture rotation decisions, but also harvest decisions! Another observation that we have learned over the years, is that plants with a Brix level of 12 or greater have improved resistance to disease and insect pressure! The higher the sugar content in a plant, the less palatable it is to pests such as grasshoppers. I’m sold! Where do I get my refractometer? At PCBFA, we have a hand-held refractometer in our Fairview Office if you would like to have a look at it or have one of our staff show you how it works. If you are really sold on it, you can find them online. They typically start out at $120 and can be found on Amazon. When purchasing a refractometer, since there are many kinds of models that measure a variety of different dissolved solids, ensure that you are purchasing a Brix refractometer. For testing forages, also ensure that you are getting a refractometer that has a scale that can measure up to 30%. This is a good scale to measure a variety of forages accurately. If you have any questions regarding refractometers or would like to try one out, please give us a call in the Fairview Office at 780-835-6799! Happy Brix-ing!

Canada’s diversity in food
Canadian Grain Commission
The COVID-19 pandemic has generated discussion around the supply source of food. For many agriculture products, Canada produces significantly more than we can eat - and we became a net exporter of food in 2019. But we’re also accustomed to eating fresh fruit and vegetables year-round. As a result, trade is and will continue to be an essential component of the Canadian agri-food supply chain. Building an index to measure reliance on trade A trade dependence ratio measures the Canadian agri-food industry’s dependence on trade using net imports and exports relative to overall consumption.

A value of 0 means Canada is self-reliant, as domestic production equals consumption (Figure 1). Negative values mean Canada is a net importer, while positive values record a net exporting position. For example: A value of -2 means that Canada’s net imports are two times larger than what it produces. Conversely, a value of +2 means that Canada’s net exports are two times larger than what it consumes. As expected, Canada is selfreliant in supply-managed sectors where the ratios are near 0. Strong net exports and a few dominant net imports
A net import position can represent an opportunity. Canada’s lamb and mutton sector have grown cash receipts 32% over the last ten years. The COVID-19 pandemic hit the sector’s profitability hard, but Canada’s overall demographic trends and food preferences are positive long-term trends for the industry. Net importing positions can also highlight difficulties challenging other producing countries’ dominant supplier positions given climate conditions and costs. Net export positions cannot be taken for granted. Trade restrictions are a major risk, especially in current times of uncertainty. Food export restrictions implemented during the 2008-09 global recession or recently by Russia and Argentina can have unintended consequences. It can create significant commodity price spikes and lead import-dependent countries to promote their food systems at the expense of imports. Trade restrictions then have an overall negative impact on large food exporters like us. The Canadian food supply chain is reliant on trade. A key risk to our exports and food affordability, is the potential that trade barriers impede the free flow of goods around the world. A strong global economic rebound should keep the demand for Canadian food vibrant globally. James Bryan Senior Relationship Manager James joined FCC as an Agricultural Economics Analyst in 2011

Canada’s production of fresh strawberries and asparagus does not meet the overall consumption needs with a trade ratio of -7.5 and -3.15, respectively. We have an excess supply of pork, lentils and maple sugar as the ratio is much larger than the zero threshold. Products under supply management have a ratio near zero, which is most often negative as we import products more than we export.

Proper vaccination care and administration by Dr. Mike Ross DVM When we spend valuable time and money on vaccinating our cattle to prevent important diseases, we should ensure that the vaccine is handled and administered correctly. This will ensure the vaccine is effective and safe for your animals as well as protecting your investment. Vaccines come in two types: modified live and killed. They are both vulnerable to destruction by improper handling or stale dating. It is important to read and follow the label very carefully. Make sure your vaccines are not expired – they will have an expiry date on them. It is also a good idea to record the lot number and expiry information in your records in case there are any problems. In veterinary clinics vaccines are stored in large coolers that are monitored daily for correct temperature. Vaccines can be susceptible to changes in temperature and UV exposure. Allowing vaccines to freeze can increase the risk of adverse vaccine reactions. Vaccines should be taken home directly and put into your refrigerator, without warming, freezing or exposure to sunlight. It is always a good idea to make the veterinary clinic your last stop before heading home. On the day of processing (administering the vaccines) try to take only the vaccine that will be used that day out to the site. Store them in a cooler to prevent overheating or freezing and only take out or mix one bottle at time. A thermometer placed in the cooler to monitor temperature of the vaccines is a good idea. While the day is progressing you can monitor the vaccines to make sure they do not get overheated or frozen. Try to keep them between 2 degrees Celsius and 7 degrees Celsius. Keep them out of sunlight whenever possible. Once vaccine is mixed, it is only good for a couple of hours. Do not keep any vaccine that has been mixed but isn’t used. Always use a new needle when removing vaccine from the bottle - if you use a dirty needle it can introduce bacteria or contaminants to the vaccine. Make sure automatic syringes are clean and sterilized before every use. A dirty syringe can not only introduce abscess forming bacteria, but they can cause vaccines to be ineffective.
Take apart syringes after every day of use, remove seals and rubber components, and wash in hot water. Do not use soap or disinfectants as they may leave residues that will destroy the vaccine the next time you use them. A general procedure for cleaning automatic syringes is: 1. Clean syringes in a dust free, clean area. Wash hands and ensure countertop is sanitized. 2. Wash using hot water, distilled if possible, at a temperature of just below boiling (180F, 85C) 3. Wash external parts and surfaces of syringes. 4. Disassemble syringes. 5. Wash syringe parts with clean hot tap water (remember do not wash the parts with soap or disinfectant). 6. Boil all metal or glass syringe parts in boiling de-ionized or distilled water for five minutes. 7. Reassemble while hot. 8. Use a small amount of CLEAN glycerin to lubricate rubbers or seals. 9. After assembly is completed rinse the internal parts three to five times with water greater than 180o F (85C). 10. Allow the syringe to cool for 10 minutes before using. 11. If storing the syringe, place the syringe in a new zip-lock bag and store the syringe in a freezer. 12. Prior to using the syringe after storage, rinse the internal syringe with water greater than 180o F (85C). You can also boil two cups of water in microwave and pull boiled water into syringe three to five times and let syringe cool for five to 10 minutes before using. Consult your veterinarian on the proper gauge and length of the needle to be used for the vaccine. Always, always use a sharp needle. Change needles every 10 to 15 head, and anytime the needle tip appears burred or gets bumped accidentally on the chute. Never straighten a bent needle. Inject everything in the neck, in the triangular part which is above the spine, ahead of the shoulder, and below the crest. This prevents damage to valuable cuts of meat, and allows for better absorption or processing of the product by the smaller, more numerous muscle groups. Try not to
inject through a soiled area of skin. Avoid giving subcutaneous injections behind the shoulder in the heart- girth area. This is where the “fly shaker” muscle is located so you actually are giving an intramuscular injection. By following these recommendations, your vaccines will be effective with the least chance of injection site reactions.

@KiskatinawFallFair
Hello all, we’re back this week with another pest update for the BC Peace Region! This week is the Grasshopper. Whether you’re harvesting to sell your crop, or to feed it to your animals, Grasshoppers can become a problem for almost every producer at some point. Like many insects, there are different species of grasshoppers, and surprisingly enough, not all are considered ‘damaging’ to crops. The two damaging species that are most commonly found in the BC Peace are called the Bruners Spurthroated Grasshopper (Melanoplus Bruneri (Scudder)) which are commonly grey/ brown in colour, and the Two Striped Grasshopper (Melanoplus bivittatus) defined by the two stripes on their back as adults. Grasshoppers can be found in stages of instar, their larval stages, or as full-grown adults. Grasshoppers do the most damage when they are in instar stages though and not when they are full grown as one might expect. Crops that suffer from grasshopper damage range from cereals to grasses. I’m sure most of you are familiar with identifying grasshopper damage by now, but if not, the picture on the left identifies the most commonly seen form of damage. Grasshoppers are messy eaters as they tend to cut through leaves in
straight lines. Their damage is not so much due to them eating the plant but with the leaf litter they leave behind as they feed! As for threshold, when there are around 7-12 Grasshoppers per square metre, you may need to consider the use of an insecticide. However, if that number reaches or surpasses 13, spraying is critical. Scouting outside your field should also be considered where density thresholds are higher; more than 25 grasshoppers per square metre in your ditches is considered above threshold. Aside from chemical control, there are other ways to reduce the number of grasshoppers and their damage in your fields. Things such as Trap Strips around the field, weather, and natural enemies (birds, rodents, etc.) can also be useful if numbers aren’t alarmingly high. For more information visit the BC Ministry of agricultures and search Grasshopper Monitoring and Control in British Columbia. Don’t forget to follow our Facebook page (Peace Region Forage Seed Association – Pest Monitoring), and feel free to contact us if you have any questions or if you have seen something unusual regarding your crops and pest damage! In our next article we will be talking about the Wheat Midge and the damage it does, along with some tips on how to reduce that.

Funnel cloud spotted over DC Readers have reported seeing a funnel cloud attempt to touch down in Dawson Creek last week on June . Comprised of condensed water droplets and associated with a twisting column of wind, and extending from the base of a cloud, funnel clouds do not reach the ground or a water surface. “At first I didn’t believe it was a funnel cloud, but as I watched it, I could see the core pulling up water vapour,” said Jaron Willems this afternoon after capturing a photo of the cloud from LP. “You can almost make out the inner and outer sheath (half way up in the zoomed in photo). It only lasted for a few more minutes before dissipating but I was able to catch a couple photos before it was gone. With all the humidity in the air, I’m guessing it was just the right conditions to see a short little vortex like this.” Environment Canada meteorologist Carmen Hartt called it a classic funnel cloud caused by instability in the atmosphere. Though funnel clouds are related to severe weather, the weather wasn’t severe enough today in the region to cause concern, Hartt said. Hartt encourages residents to use the #bcstorm hashtag on Twitter to help meteorologists track storms in the region. “We’re seeing more and more evidence of severe weather, and it’s helping us learn and helping us verify storms,” Hartt said. editor@dcdn.ca

Could wheat prices improve? the wheat market. “Increased flour demand induced by COVID-19 factors did provide some price stability. Although total Canadian wheat exports this crop year are lower than year ago, U.S. wheat export sales are higher than last year and higher than the 5-year average. Reduced competition is expected from Ukraine and Russia next crop year. Speculators are in a net sell position in the U.S. futures market. The implication of that is, with a weather-induced price catalyst, those speculators would cover their positions by buying. That may provide a much sought after pricing opportunity for wheat producers.”

“Many factors affect wheat markets, but supply and demand are the major price drivers,” explains Blue. “From a global perspective, there is currently plenty of wheat, and price has generally been reflecting that.” He adds that during 2013 through 2017, global wheat production greatly exceeded usage. It led to an increasing world wheat inventory “So, despite dryness in Europe reducing prospective wheat production below last year’s levels there, with world inventory near record levels, the market is challenged to convince buyers to increase their forward pricing.” Blue says that there are potentially supportive factors for

Additional funding supports BC farmers, processors to move online
Due to high demand from B.C. farmers and food companies, additional funding has been added to support more of the Buy BC e-commerce applications that were received after the initial funding was committed. In response to the first round of funding being committed in less than one week, the B.C. government is providing an additional $250,000 to support industry-led Buy BC activities focused on e-commerce, for a total of $550,000 under government’s Buy BC Partnership Program. “The response the program received in the first round of funding from farmers, fishers and food and beverage processors was exceptional,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture. “The demand was so great that it was clear we needed to help more businesses

Why count canola plants? By Autumn Barnes Multiple canola plant counts done about a month after seeding will provide a report card on the seeding operation and help with planning for the rest of 2020. Farmers and agronomists can use multiple counts averaged across a field to calculate emergence percentage and seed survival. Use the “emergence” tool under the Seeding Rate tab at canolacalculator.ca. Farmers and agronomists can also use these counts to determine how much care this field will need all season long. For example, if counts are below the recommended five to eight plants per square foot, all remaining plants may need extra attention to bring them to harvest and preserve the yield potential of the crop.
of plants inside the hoop, and multiply by four to get plants per square metre. To convert to plants per square foot divide the plants per square metre by 10. • Two-square-foot hoop. Use a hoop with an inside diameter of 19 and circumference of 60, which provides an area of two square feet. Count the number of plants inside the hoop and divide by two to get plants per square foot. Counting with this larger hoop (instead of a one-footsquare hoop) will incorporate plants from two seed rows and give a larger sample size, helping to improve the accuracy of counts. • For other sized hoops, determine the area using the formula A=ϖr2 (r= radius, ϖ = 3.14). How to count with a metre stick
• Use a metre stick and count the seedlings per metre of row. Take that number and multiply by 100 then divide by the seed spacing in cm to get plants per square metre. • For example, 25 plants per metre multiplied by 100 then divided by 25 cm (10” row spacing) is 100 plants per square metre (approximately 10 per square foot). Do not include volunteer canola plants in plant density counts or emergence calculations. Look for blue seed coats attached to seedling root systems and avoid counting plants which are growing outside of seed rows. Many factors can cause lowerthan-expected plant counts. These can include weather factors such as wind, rain and

frost, insects such as flea beetles and cutworms, seedling diseases, and seeder issues such as seeding too deep or putting too much fertilizer in the seed row. While doing the counts, some scouting and records-checking can help to identify the key causes. For more details on how to do counts, including videos, and on the common causes for missing plants, please read “Plant counts…and reasons for lower numbers” at canolawatch.org. While there, you can sign up to receive the timely Canola Watch email updates throughout the growing season. –Autumn Barnes is an agronomy specialist with the Canola Council of Canada. A neighbor’s ranch that had been in their family for generations was listed for sale by real estate as one listing of over 40 quarter sections. None of us neighbors wanted or could afford it all and the real estate listing finally expired with no offers. The owners then put the land up for sale with CLHbid.com. This suited us neighbors perfectly and in the end seven of us bought the land we each wanted. I was able to bid on and buy my land from my house. CLHbid gave us all notice of the sale and allowed all neighbors an equal chance.- James Baier, Rancher - Compeer, AB

Here’s how you can take part: To nominate an inactive oil and gas site for closure through the Site Rehabilitation Program, landowners, First Nations and Metis Settlements’ residents can visit Landowner and Indigenous Community Site Nomination. There, follow the online instructions to nominate a site for closure on private, reserve or settlement land. The list of nominated sites will be compiled and verified, and posted online in the near future. Contractors will be able to view the list of sites to negotiate with the oil and gas company responsible for the site – otherwise known as the site licensee – to enter into a contract to close the site through a Site Rehabilitation Program grant. In the end, it will be up to the site licensee if work will be completed, but the vast majority of companies are expected to be eager to have their site qualify for a grant to complete required closure work. All of this is made possible by the Government of Alberta’s recently launched Site Rehabilitation Program, with $1 billion in grant funding to get Albertans back to work doing abandonment and reclamation on inactive oil and gas sites across the province. Starting now, the Site Rehabilitation Program is expected to create approximately 5,300 much-needed direct jobs, and help stimulate opportunities for Alberta’s oil field service companies during these difficult times. Alberta has a strong regulatory system requiring that the thousands of oil and gas structures across the province – including pump jacks, pipelines, and wells – be properly decommissioned and their sites brought back to a land condition similar to the state they were in before the infrastructure was built. This work ensures that the sites are safe for landowners, Indigenous communities and Albertans, and there are no negative impacts to the environment. This initiative is another strong example of Alberta’s commitment to responsible energy development. Connect with the Site Rehabilitation Program: Email: energy.srpsitenomination@gov.ab.ca
