Hello everyone! We are approaching a time in the growing season where you may start to see issues regarding Wheat Midge in your wheat crops. Wheat Midge (Sitodiplosis mosellana), is an orange Midge that is about half the size of a mosquito. They have four stages in their lifecycle: eggs, larvae, pupa, and adult. The adult midge emerges from the Pupa stage in the soil over a period of 5-6 weeks from mid-June to midJuly and live for a total of about 7 days once fully grown. For identification and scouting purposes, it is best to look for Wheat Midge between the heading and flowering crop stages and after 8:30pm when they are most active. This is when the females come out of the crop canopy to lay their eggs on the newly emerged wheat heads. All conventional wheat varieties are susceptible to wheat damage; however, some are more likely than others. Crop damage occurs during the larval stage, as they feed on the developing wheat kernel after hatching. Symptoms of damage can often be mistaken for frost or drought to someone who has never been exposed to Midge damage before. There are minimal visible changes to the external wheat head, but the
kernel will be shrivelled, cracked, and deformed if there has been wheat midge damage. There are a few natural progressions that can help reduce the chances of a Wheat Midge infestation! Biological control of Wheat Midge includes Parasitoid Wasps that lay their eggs inside of the Wheat Midge larvae, ultimately consuming them as they grow. Seeding dates may also be a prevention method, it has been discovered that early seeding dates can result in less Midge damage as the crop matures before the Midge emerges through the soil. If prevention methods fail however, and the threshold of 1 adult midge per each four or five heads. If threshold is met chemical control may be warranted. Insecticide should be applied in the evening when the female Midge is most active at the top of the canopy. Good luck with your wheat midge scouting and please, feel free to contact us if you have any questions or concerns regarding what you are seeing. Tune in for our next article as we explore the Bertha Armyworm. Phone – 250.719.8322 Email – Pest@bcgrain.com

Breakfast Brief JASON & CORINNA HARVEY OPEN THE DOORS ON RIMROCK WILDLIFE REHABILITATION CENTER
CANOLA, SOYBEAN PRICES AND A PENDING PULL-BACK (FarmLead.com, June 26, 2020) Grain markets this morning are quietly mixed after corn and soybean prices pulled back again yesterday on the beneficial rain that most of the Midwest is getting. Yesterday, corn prices fell to their lowest in a month and a half, while soybean prices pulled back for the 4th consecutive day as healthy rains across major U.S. growing regions kept the bulls at bay. On the flipside, wheat prices were able to gain on some short-covering in the market, but obviously, an accelerating harvest across the Northern Hemisphere is continuing to put pressure on the complex. In outside markets, new COVID-19 cases continue to surge around the world, but especially in the U.S. and Brazil, threatening the expectations of a V-shaped recovery in the economy. Evidence is growing that local and state governments, business owners, and even consumers are being more cautious when it comes to returning to “normal”, and that’s obviously going to put a lot of pressure on economies rebounding. The IMF literally said this week that the global economy should contract by at least 5% this year, and could take more than 2 years to get back to where we were in 2019.
Thank China for Soybean Prices Improving…For Now Jason, Corinna, William and Mariah Harvey have opened up their ranch and hearts to begin another journey for the hard-working Dawson Creek family. Not fulfilled by working in the oilfield, ranching, looking after the Peace Country Jr. Cattleman’s Club, and training aspiring area kayakers, the Harvey’s have created a wildlife rehab operation on their farm; initially being licensed for ungulates such as deer, elk and moose. Our congratulations go out to all the Harvey’s and, if you are looking for information on the rehab center, I’m sure Jason would love to hear from you. You can usually find him on the business end of his cell phone at (250)719-9575 or the Rimrock Ranch Facebook site.
COUNTY FAMILY HONOURED FOR OVER A CENTURY OF FARMING (County of Grande Prairie No. 1, June 29, 2020) A BeaverlodgeAlbright area farming family is the recipient of a 100 Years of Farming Pioneer Farming Family Award. Eric and Barb Hodges and family have been recognized by the Agricultural Services Board for the family’s contributions to agriculture and the County’s heritage. The award pays tribute to families that have farmed or ranched in the County of Grande Prairie for 100 years continuously on land they own or have rented. The County will provide a wrought-iron-style sign for their property in recognition of their 100+ years of farming. The Hodges family have farmed in the area since 1915 when Eric’s father, Venn, arrived from England to settle on a homestead at SW 15-72-10 W6M. That property was sold and they continued to live and farm on SE 29-72-10 W6M. Venn helped establish the 4-H Club in Beaverlodge in 1950, the first within the County of Grande Prairie. Eric, one of four sons, was a member at age 12. “Family farms and the agricultural sector continue to be a strong foundation of the County of Grande Prairie,” said Sonja Raven, Agricultural Fieldman. “It’s important to recognize the commitment and investment of these community builders in this key industry and to life in the area. We congratulate the Hodges for their contributions for more than 100 years and extend our best wishes for continued success.” The Hodges farm a total of 2,000 acres and their operation includes grain and cattle. Eric Hodges is proud of the recognition and what it means to his family heritage.
Soybean prices are finding some love from the markets (and thus, the headlines) as continued buying by China has helped futures values appreciated nearly 7% since the lows seen in April. As reported by the Wall Street Journal, in the last month alone, we know that China has bought about 5 MMT of U.S. soybeans, making up about 56% of all soybean exports sales over that timeframe. For perspective, up until this month, China’s purchases of U.S. soybeans had accounted for only 27% of all export sales, basically saying that in June, China’s doubled their pace of buying. While some of this push is political, currency effects have been notable, with the Brazilian Real having gained about 5% in the past month against the U.S. Dollar, while the Greenback has lost about 3%. The result is that U.S. soybeans have been better priced, on a port-purchasing basis, than that from Brazil. Put plainly, it doesn’t take a financial wizard today to know what your cheapest sourcing option is between the U.S. and Brazil. However, a political wizard may be needed to sort through all the games that are being played right now. The latest stunt from China is their demand that all boats of U.S., Brazilian, or Canadian soybeans be guaranteed to be free of COVID-19 and it’s potentially one of the angles to play to not have to meet their Phase One trade deal obligations (of which they have a long way to go).To be clear, Beijing is not demanding that the personnel on the boats ferrying the agricultural goods be COVID-19 free, but the soybeans themselves. As a reminder though, China needs to ensure a stable food supply chain, as the well-documented history of famine within its borders has led to food security being a significant political priority. Simply abandoning the trade deal with the U.S. doesn’t make a lot of sense, as the current White House would more than likely amp up its criticism and likely respond with some sort of belittling trade measures. Nonetheless, even if China buys more soybeans, that demand will be likely offset by a bigger crop, as expected in Tuesday’s acreage report from the USDA (more on this in a bit).
Where Canola & Soybean Prices Go from Here
Just as they did for corn prices last week, the great Ag economists at the University of Illinois went through the statistical paces to look at where soybean prices might go in 2020.At trendline yields of 49.8 bushels per acres, soybean prices are more than likely to pull back below the $8.50 handle that we’re seeing on the futures board (and is usually a break even point for many producers). That said, these estimates of how soybean prices perform is also based on current known acreage data. On Tuesday next week, we’ll get the USDA’s June 30 Stocks and Acreage report, which, based on pre-report polling from Reuters, suggests soybean acreage could climb by about 1.2 million! More specifically, the average pre-report guesstimate pegs soybean acres increasing by 1.244M to 84.75, while corn acreage is expected to decline by about 1.672M to 95.32M total acres. Wheat acres are expected to climb by 364,000 to new area total of all types of just over 45M. For the grain stocks report, average pre-report guesstimates for corn stocks as of June 1 are 4.85B bushels (=14% YoY), soybean inventories of 1.4B (-21% YoY), and wheat supplies of 984M bushels. Before departing, I’d like to quickly touch on another oilseed, in that canola price are performing fairly well. A likely record volume of canola crush, combined with a stronger pace of exports has certainly helped canola prices. On the latter, everyone knows that the EU has started to buy more Canadian canola due to their politicized and environmental-related decrease in rapeseed production there. Further, canola prices – both new and old crop – have been buoyed by some drier weather, albeit recent rains in many areas of the Canadian Prairies likely means the top is close. Of course, if no rains fall for another 3-4 weeks in many areas, it could be pretty catastrophic for production, but the 10-day forecasts suggests this is unlikely to happen in most areas. It pains me to write that though, as my family in Frontier, SK (SW corner of the province) isn’t likely to see any significant moisture events. That said, if precipitation is limited in Western Canada or even the Midwest, but temperature remain high, the bulls could take a quick run and provide one of the best selling opportunities of the year. To growth, Brennan Turner CEO FarmLead TF: 1-855-332-7653 help@combyne.ag @Combyne or @FarmLead on Twitter
“This award is a tribute to my Dad,” he says. It certainly wasn’t easy to homestead this land 100 years ago. I don’t know how they did it. Legacy farming became a way of life in the area. I’ve known the neighbours since we all went to the rural school in Beaverlodge, the only one in the district at the time.” The family farming tradition is now deeply rooted. Eric’s sons Darrell and Keith and grandson, Keiran, carry on the operations, cultivating the same land homesteaded by Venn more than a century ago. Their daughter, Beverley Marshall, also lives in the area.
“It’s a good life and I enjoy every minute of it. It’s pretty special to see our two sons now farming the land that’s been in our family all this time.” R0011782274

SARDA Ag Research during CoviD-19 By Shelleen Gerbig, P. Ag., Extension Coordinator (June 9, 2020) COVID has brought a lot of uncertainty into the workplace and SARDA Ag Research has not been immune. When the pandemic was declared and the new mandates were brought into play, staff were unsure if they would have a job during the summer of 2020. Even when Agriculture was declared an essential service, it was still unclear if research was included. Over time, staff was assured that research was included under the essential service umbrella. However, being assured that research in agriculture was included in the essential services list did not mean that operations did not have to change and adapt. Staff worked from home as much as possible, necessary meetings were held online, limiting staffs’ chances of contracting COVID. When staff needed to go to the office or the shop, they were still required to observe social distancing and expected to observe sanitation protocols. Office access was restricted to staff only. With the imposed restrictions, the number of projects and the types of projects were reviewed and assessed. Staff evaluated the workload of each project as well as the ability of staff to observe social distancing and follow protocol duties. As a result, all trials are now local, our trial site near DeBolt let go for now. In order to maintain SARDA Ag Research’s renowned quality research, other projects needed to be cancelled or rejected due to the pandemic. The hiring of summer staff was also limited due to the restrictions. While dealing with the changes brought on by the pandemic, SARDA Ag Research was dealing with another huge change: the reduction in staff working for Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. These staff were important sources of information and
7
regular contributors to the SARDA Ag Research extension program through articles and presentations. The SARDA Ag Research extension program is currently identifying new revered unbiased sources. Another positive outcome has been the addition of Calvin Yoder, P.Ag., to staff, SARDA will fill the niche for producers needing reliable information on forage seed production. Behind the scenes, the extension program was already slated for a major overhaul, but the changes in the industry and the changes brought about by COVID have expedited this. Summer field tour events and crop walk events have been cancelled. We are working on the creation of videos and short clips to extend information in place of these events. The trial sites will still be open and if you would like a private tour of the plots, contact us to make arrangements. SARDA Ag Research staff to make arrangements. SARDA Ag Research staff are also looking at revamping the website and newsletter. Communication options have greatly increased over the last ten years and while SARDA has attempted to keep abreast of these changes, and maintain the programs required to do these things, we have determined that it may be more efficient to hire experts who are experienced with the programs and the formatting required. As we identify the people with the expertise we desire, we are working on a communications plan and branding document which will guide our new endeavors. These changes in the extension program will also free up some time for Shelleen Gerbig, P.Ag., to spend more time on agronomy and responding to producers’ questions. Don’t expect to see huge changes in the extension program in the near future, but behind the scenes SARDA Ag Research staff will be looking at designs and formats, planning how to best show content and determining how to best achieve our goals. After staff have vetted the changes, these will have to go to the Board for approval. However, you will notice more online content over the summer. As changes are made, SARDA Ag Research staff would like to have your feedback, good or bad, by contacting us through the website, talking to staff, or phoning the office. COVID-19 has definitely brought some changes into how SARDA Ag Research staff conduct business. I suspect that staff will avail themselves of the option to work from home more often, especially if the weather is inclement. I expect that more meetings will be held online reducing the amount of work related travel. When face to face meetings are required, we will no longer shake hands, instead I expect that we will bump elbows and nod heads instead. Some things will not change. SARDA Ag Research will maintain its reputation for doing quality research that will explore new products, varieties and procedures supporting agriculture in the Peace Region. SARDA Ag Research will endeavor to extend timely and relevant information and be a locally available source of information on programs, agronomy and grants available to producers and the agricultural industry.

Jason and Corinna Harvey, who spend a lot of their time around animals through their work on Rimrock Ranch, realized in 2019 there was no rehab centre for injured wildlife near there home in Dawson Creek. Bears and other carnivores are looked after by the government, but there was nowhere for injured or compromised deer, moose, and other ungulates to go to be rehabilitated back to health. Enter the Rimrock Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre — a place where injured animals across the Peace Region are brought until they are ready to be released back into the wild. The non-profit centre is certified by the provincial government, and the Harvey’s receive calls from conservation officers informing them of certain animals that have either been hit by a car or survived an attack, which are then brought to the centre. Corinna is a veterinarian for the federal government, so this is right and her wheelhouse, and her kid’s, William and Mariah, are having a blast feeding the animals and helping them regain their strength. “The kids enjoy it and are out there every three hours, taking turns with the moose.
We have two people on rotation for feeding, so that the animals don’t get accustomed to certain people, there is no petting them or anything like that,” said Jason. He’s referring to two young moose currently at the centre. They are currently building permanent pens to house and nurse animals, and replace the temporary ones currently in use. When the centre started last year, they rehabilitated two deer — one survived while the other didn’t make it.

Jason said he’s noticed their is a huge need and appreciation for this service in the region, and said so far they have received animals from near Chetwynd, Fort St. John, and Dawson Creek. “We have had an overwhelming response of support overall. We’re not activists by any means, we hunt and fish, but I’d rather we release a bull moose back into the wild and he is eventually
harvested rather than left to die from being hit by a car. That’s a success story to me.” The Harvey’s are a busy family. In addition to the rehab centre and their ranch — where they raise cattle, horses, turkey, and chickens — Jason works in the oil industry and Corinna is a vet. Still, the heavy work-load doesn’t keep the family from doing whatever they can to help out the wildlife in the region. If you see an injured animal or for more information, contact Jason Harvey at 250-719-9575. Email reporter Dillon Giancola at sports@ahnfsj.ca.

Once the animals have healed and regained strength, Jason said they do a soft release in the crown land near their ranch. This August, they will let the animals out each day, and they will return at night, until they are ready to be fully released.

At the Horse Ranch Sandy the Horse Ranch operations manager and runs everything in the office and myself spent the last 2 1/2 months putting into place our first Online Lesson Series. We have stage 1 completed and have students enrolled in it since April 20th. We started a private FaceBook group for the online students and students that are active in The Horse Ranch community. To support our learners and connect with student we’ve been doing ½ hr FaceBook live sessions – answering questions on Tuesdays and Saturdays for those that are in the private group. The private FB group and the online lesson series are designed for people that are very keen on moving forward with their horsemanship and I wanted to make it as accessible and easy as I can for students to move faster threw the stages. The online course is set up in 15 to 20 minute-ish separate lessons that you have unlimited access to for 6 months. It is 5 or 6 clinic days of information at a 3 day price. Keeping the lessons short helps prevent feeling overwhelmed and talking with everyone twice a week to answer any questions has proven to be very helpful. The goal is to support at home learning so before or after attending a camp or clinic you can be much further down the road in less time and answer your questions to all those things you thought you would remember but forgot once you got home. You can watch them on your phone in the corral if you want – as many times as you need to get the skills down pat. In the past, I would do a clinic and
then not see the students for 6 months or a year and often no contact. This is a way I can stay in touch with many at once. The FB group allows a safe place to celebrate your successes with others that are or have been working and learning the same things you are. The people in the group can inspire and encourage each other. When you pass a stage the others in the group know just exactly what it meant to achieve each stage. We wanted to get it up and running and work out any glitches we could find. It’s been going fairly smoothly and now are ready to share the opportunities to everyone. If you are interested in the Online Lesson Series Stage 1 is complete with our first course well underway and Stage 2 is about 2 weeks from completion and launching soon thereafter. Send Sandy an email and we will fill you in – and – answer any questions. For the private FB group also contact us if you are not a dabbler! We want those seriously wanting to move forward with their horsemanship. On another note – our annual camps at The Ranch are underway. A number of
very keen students that called me and made sure that the camps were going ahead this year and according to the government we have to play safe and stay under 50 people so we can do that. 50 head of cattle arrived yesterday for the summer so some of us will be doing cow work with the horses, which is always good for the horse, the people and the cattle. I’ve made a few more cross country jumps down in the meadows. August 19-27 we are having our Putting Principles to Purpose 8 Day Horsemanship Camp which will be cattle work, obstacle challenges, river rides, rope handling for beginners followed by a friends and family camp out with barbecues, team games, chili cook offs, man hunter and wagon rides. The Friends and Family Camp Out is August 28-31 – it would be great if you could join us. We have lots of fun and learning is planned and as will be following the provincial health suggestions – and if you’re planning to join us – give Sandy a call at 250 789 3072 or an email so we can keep track of attendance.

Caring for the pregnant mare By Dr. Samantha Deamel Breeding is a large part of our equine industry and yet broodmares are often the ones who are forgotten about once they are kicked out to pasture. They are carrying precious cargo so why don’t they receive the same quality care as their ridden counterparts? Just like every other horse, broodmares should have their feet trimmed and teeth floated regularly as well as routinely vaccinated and dewormed. Providing the top quality care for your broodmare will give her the best chance at carrying a healthy foal to term and will be better prepared for the next breeding season. Dental care is of utmost importance as mares need to maintain a healthy weight during pregnancy. This will set them up to intake the appropriate amount of calories and nutrients they will need to support a growing foal. Horses have hypsodont teeth, meaning their teeth continually erupt throughout their lifetime until the tooth has reached the end of its life. If you have a young broodmare (between the ages of 3 and 5) it is important to check for remaining deciduous teeth, also known as caps. As the mare chews, she can develop sharp points, hooks, ramps, wave mouth, etc. All of these issues and more can interfere with her ability to break down the food and absorb the nutrients it provides. Nutrition and body
condition are crucial aspects to getting a mare pregnant. Mares that have a low body condition score at time of breeding have a reduced chance of getting pregnant. Once the mare is pregnant, her needs will change throughout the pregnancy. Pregnant mares should be placed on a vitamin and mineral supplement along with salt. They should have access to free choice pasture as well as 1.5-2% of their body weight in hay. When she hits 8 months of gestation a concentrated feed should be added in up to ~0.3% of her body weight and can be increased gradually to ~0.5% by 10 months. If the mare is lactating she will need to be supplemented with a concentrated feed early at 1% of her body weight and decreasing when she has weaned the foal. Mares will gain approximately 12-16% of their own body weight by the time they are ready to foal. This equates to approximately 100-250 pounds! If the mare does not have healthy hooves, problems can develop and cause pain. Most horses will carry to term despite being in pain but it can be challenging for them to catch after insemination. In a mare’s body, the mare’s health is the primary concern and getting pregnant is secondary. If the mare is not healthy, and pain free, the probability of getting pregnant is reduced. Horse hooves grow approximately one entirely new hoof capsule in one year. To maintain proper angles, they should be trimmed every 4-6 weeks.
Abortions in horses can occur due to a number of reasons. Equine herpes virus 1 subtype 1 is the most common cause of an infectious cause for abortion. Up to 80% of horses are sub clinical carriers and show no signs of the disease. Vaccination for herpes virus, Pneumobort, is available but efficacy of the vaccine is questionable. The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) still recommends vaccination. It should be given at 5, 7, and 9 months of gestation. The core vaccines recommended by the AAEP include tetanus, eastern and western encephalomyelitis, West Nile virus, and rabies and should be given at 4-6 weeks pre-partum. All of these core vaccines should be performed prior to pregnancy to reduce risk of abortion. If West Nile virus has not been vaccinate prior to breeding, it should only be given to a pregnant mare in high-risk areas. Deworming is another important part of the management of pregnant mares. It is also recommended to deworm your mare with a product that is on label for pregnant mares 4-6 week pre-partum. A dose of an ivermectin product can also be given the day she foals to decrease the risk of Strongyloides weteri in the foal. Overall, brood mares should receive equal, if not better care to increase the chances of getting a happy, healthy foal.

Canada recognizes that innovation drives prosperity, creates jobs, and is key to keeping the agriculture and agri-food sector strong and competitive. That is why, the Government of Canada announced today financing of close to $100 million for the new Merit Functional Foods plant in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The federal financing for Merit Functional Foods includes: $10 million in a repayable contribution from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s AgriInnovate Program; $25 million in debt financing from Farm Credit Canada; $55 million in debt financing from Export Development Canada; and $9.2 million from the Protein Industries Canada supercluster announced earlier to support a project for the commercialization of a new highly soluble, highly functional pea and canola protein isolates. Merit Functional Foods will
construct a commercial-scale protein extraction facility that will produce plant proteins superior in solubility, flavour and purity. Merit Functional Foods will be the first facility in the world with the capability to produce foodgrade canola protein ready and safe for human consumption. Merit Functional Foods plant will source 100 percent of its inputs from Canadian producers, with a projected forecast to utilize 10,000 metric tonnes of yellow peas and 17,000 tonnes of canola seed in its first year. This plant, scheduled to be fully operational in December 2020 will create 80 new jobs and will help to establish the region as a world-leading agriculture and processing hub. Consumer demand for plantbased proteins is growing in both Canada and markets around the world. This innovative technology provides alternatives to animal and dairy derived proteins, adding value to our grain commodities and plant-based proteins.

and the Director’s Elite Team.
“I was pretty excited about it, I’ve always worked really hard towards all my sports, putting in the practice time, and I’m glad to be recognized for it,” Bondaroff said.
“It was such a cool experience, you’re competing against 46 other girls, it improved my public speaking, and I finished 14th in my horsemanship out of all 46.,” Bondaroff said.
“Winning the athlete of the year award means just as much as winning the academic ones.”
Bondaroff will spend the 2020-21 school year at Northern Lights College taking the General Engineering course, and she plans to be a part of the NLC Rodeo Team. She was a part of the team near the end of last season as well. However, it’s not known exactly what the college rodeo season will look like this year yet due to COVID-19.
She didn’t win the four bursaries by chance, but similarly to all the time she put into her athletics, Bondaroff applied to 26 awards overall, with many of them needing a special application and extra time. Bondaroff has been playing in volleyball and competing in rodeo her entire life. She loves the contrast the two sports provide. “It was really cool to be a part of both. Volleyball is such a team sport where you’re learning about sportsmanship, what it takes to be a team and have everyone come together, and rodeo is an individual sport, it’s all in your heard. There’s nobody else to rely on but yourself ,” said Bondaroff. At provincials this year, the DCSS volleyball team finished third, and Bondaroff was nominated for the tournament’s Top Libero award, a specialized defensive position. “We were a third place team so to be included in that was a huge honour and something I was very proud of.” Bondaroff didn’t win any BC High School Rodeo championships this year, but did have a solid season. She finished third in goat tying, second in team roping for heelers, and fourth in breakaway roping. She added to her collection of awards and bursaries at the BC High School Graduation on June 27, receiving $1,000 from the National High School Rodeo Association, $300 from the President’s Scholarship, $250 from the High School Rodeo Association of BC, as well as $500 from the North Region. She was also named to the Honour Roll
One of her most memorable experiences in rodeo is when she represented BC in the rodeo queen competition at the 2019 National High School Rodeo Finals in Rock Spring, Wyoming.
She didn’t get to compete in the volleyball club season this year, n or the second half of the high school rodeo season, as both were cancelled due to the pandemic. “It was kind of upsetting to me, we worked so hard as a team, and for rodeo I was really improving and to not have a chance to see how that turned out was disappointing. But it’s OK, I can still play in the ladies league here and the college rodeos.” Though the future of college athletics and sports in general is very much up in the air, one thing’s for sure — the hard work that’s carried Bondaroff this far will bring her success for years to come. sports@ahnfsj.ca

Swaffield slays 2019/20 season The 2019-20 Alberta High School Rodeo season was anything but normal, but in the end, she ended a season the way she had two times before — as provincial barrel racing champion. Swaffield won the 2020 Alberta barrel racing title at the Alberta High School Rodeo Finals in Stettler, June 18 to 21. Swaffied previously won the B.C. provincial junior barrel racing title and the B.C. Barrel Racing championship her first year in senior rodeo during the 2017-18 season, before switching to Alberta for her final two high school rodeo years. In addition to her strong race times, Swaffield was also the reserve Alberta reserve pole bending champion, the Alberta Reserve All Around Cowgirl, and finished fourth in goat tying. Not bad at all, considering the rodeo almost didn’t take place.

“It was really fun, and I’m just glad I was able to finish my year off,” Swaffield said. “Everyone had to sign a waver to compete, and they held one event in the morning and one event in the evening for four days. Every time an event finished you had to leave theJohn grounds, and they a pretty Explore Deere combines anddid technology. good job,” said Swaffield. High school rodeo was unable to return in B.C., but the Dawson Creek resident benefited from being a part of the Albertan association. Swaffield is looking to take the momentum from her success this year across the border, when she moves to Levelland, Texas. She will be attending South Plains College on a full-ride rodeo scholarship for the 2020-21 season. Swaffield said she will be allowed to cross the Canadian-American border with her student visa and can bring one guardian with her. She plans to leave August 13. Swaffield is confident there will still be a rodeo season, as Texas has been holding high school and professional rodeos the last month or so, but acknowledges it may be a different season than normal. New Mexico colleges also compete in the same conference as the Texas ones, but have not allowed for rodeos to take place right now, and it remains to be seen how that will affect things at South Plains College. “Competing in college rodeo has
been a dream of mine, going to experience and compete against different people, meet new people, and be in a whole other country. I’m excited to be able to practice every day and have good weather,” Swaffield said. She said she’ll have her trusty horse Smarty with her, and will be competing in barrel racing, goat tying, and breakaway roping. She will be studying business administration, going for her bachelors degree. Due to her strong Alberta finals showing, Swaffield qualified for both the 2020 National High School Finals Rodeo in Guthrie, Oklahoma, and the 2021 Cowboy Channel NFR Jr. in Fort Worth, Texas. The turn around to compete in Oklahoma will be too tight, but Swaffield plans to compete at the NFR Jr., March 2 to 6. “I’m just excited to meet new people, to have a change, and there are new opportunities there for what I’ve been doing my whole life.”

Breeding better barley Alberta is the largest barley producer in Canada. Barley makes up nearly two-thirds of the breeding efforts at Alberta Agriculture and Forestry’s Field Crop Development Centre (FCDC) in Lacombe. “Feed and forage are the core of our work,” explains Flavio Capettini, head of research at the FCDC. “Varieties are the foundation of agriculture. Without improved varieties, there is no genetic progress to contribute to increasing productivity and food security. Farmers and breeders have been continuously breeding barley for more than 10,000 years. Breeding is even more important now that we have a steadily increasing world population, climatic pressures and international market competition.” This year has been productive for the centre. In March, 4 barley varieties were approved for registration. From those, 2 new barley varieties are currently in the licensing process for
commercialization. The FCDC is releasing tworow barley varieties with yields that exceed market-dominant varieties and have significantly improved lodging resistance in most of them. Six-row barley varieties that have improved Nitrogen Use Efficiency (NUE) are also being released. “This can mean lower input costs, more stable yield and less nitrogen lost to the environment,” says Yadeta Kabeta, FCDC research scientist. The centre has changed its forage barley breeding strategy to bring varieties that better meet the needs of the forage industry to market. “This program is focusing on yield, quality and smooth awns, especially in two-row barley,” says Capettini. “The majority of available varieties have rough awns, which can irritate cattle’s mouths. Smooth or hooded awns can avoid that negative effect.”
“Also,” Capettini adds, “the malting varieties are gaining market share and are recognized as having favourable characteristics preferred by the growing craft malting and brewing industry.” The team at the centre continues to investigate, create and research a way to breed different types of Alberta grown malting barley to give beer different flavours. And, it’s not just breweries that rely on these malting barley varieties. “Farmers who grow malting barley varieties every year aim to make the quality needed for malting,” explains Capettini. “But, if the crop does not fit those characteristics they are used for feed. Around 50% of the barley
acres in Alberta are planted with malting varieties although only 20 to 30% of the crops that fit the specifications will be used as malt.” The FCDC has been developing enhanced cereal varieties for feed, malt, food, and bio-industrial uses since 1973. Along with barley, researchers work with triticale. 34 The Northern Horizon, July 10, 2020
A new way to report rat sightings in Alberta 310RATS@gov.ab.ca is the new email address that people can use if they see a rat – dead or alive – in the province. Albertans can also call 310-RATS (7287) to report any sightings. “This one-step approach will help to keep Alberta rat-free,” explains Karen Wickerson, rat and pest program specialist with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. “Using this email allows the person reporting the rodent to snap a picture with their smartphone and send it directly to our rat control program.”
Farming innovation and changes in practices have also helped contribute to the success of the program. Pig and chicken barns are now enclosed and built with cement floors. Farmers don’t store as much grain on the farm. When they do, it’s in steel instead of wooden granaries, built with steel or cement floors. Wickerson adds that the biggest threat of rats entering the province today is via transportation means, such as recreation vehicles and commercial trucks.
The Government of Alberta launched the program 70 years ago to prevent a rat breeding population from taking hold in the province. The first rat infestation was discovered along the Alberta-Saskatchewan border in 1950. Rats were declared a pest and added to The Agricultural Pests Act of Alberta, 1942. Alberta’s geography continues to be an advantage in the fight against this invasive species. A cold north, mountains to the west and southwest, and open and unfriendly prairie to the southeast only allows for the overland migration of rats from the eastern border.

Rare “ghost” magpie spotted in Peace Local bird enthusiast Cara Moore has a lot of birds — more than she can count — feed at her house throughout the week. Lately, however, she’s noticed one that stands out from the rest. Included in the group of magpies that visit her bird feeders is a rare ghost magpie, named as such because of its light-grey and white feathers, instead of the black and blue of most magpies. Moore, who runs a small bird rescue from her house, said most species of birds can have an albino appearance. The rare colouring is the result of leucism, a genetic mutation resulting in a loss of pigmentation in a bird’s feathers.

“I was surprised to spot it. I was very happy to see it,” said Moore. “It’s not something you see every day and it’s always cool to see something different.” A ghost magpie was spotted and reported in Edmonton in 2016. Moore said those interested in spotting the bird may find it around Tot Lot Park near 76 Street and 91 Avenue. Photos by Cara Moore.

COVID-19 and your farm this summer “As Alberta farms go into the summer work season, there is little doubt that practices and procedures have changed to adjust for the ongoing threat of COVID-19,” says Kenda Lubeck, farm safety coordinator with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. “Farms are encouraged to outline an exposure control plan for COVID-19.” This plan should identify the specific health hazards on the farm and outlining responsibilities and risks associated with the operation. Implementing specific controls based on risk assessments will help each farm reduce its risk of COVID-19. Basic controls include: Engineering controls such as barriers and partitions or increased ventilation. Administrative controls that change the way workers, volunteers and family members interact. They should include policies for physical distancing, limiting hours of operations, respiratory etiquette and hand washing procedures Personal protective equipment (PPE) is generally only necessary when hazards related to COVID-19 cannot be completely eliminated by administrative and engineering controls. PPE controls the hazard at the worker, volunteer or family member level. Examples of PPE include gloves, eye protection, face protections and masks.
COVID-19 related PPE In addition to regular PPE required for specific tasks – grain or hay handling, cleaning, applying chemicals – workers can use masks and other face coverings to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
new workers, it’s important to establish an orientation program to address all hazards, including COVID-19. “This will help vulnerable workers, volunteers and family members avoid dangerous mistakes and learn new skills.” Tasks and transporting people
“It is important to note,” Lubeck adds, “that cloth face coverings are not considered an adequate PPE substitution for a respirator. If your farm task requires a respirator or a dust mask, make sure you are using the proper PPE for the situation.”
When it’s impossible to maintain the physical distancing between interconnected roles or close proximity teams – working with animals, equipment maintenance, or riding in vehicles together – farms may consider these options:
Cloth face coverings work to protect other people, not the wearer. These masks should be the last line of defense against coronavirus. However, they can help prevent the spread of COVID-19 when workers are required to do tasks close to each other. Visitors and new workers
Assign people who already comingle as a ‘family group that lives together’ to those interconnected roles or close proximity teams. Outfit interconnected roles or close proximity teams with appropriate PPE whenever possible or reasonable. Recommend individual users place all used PPE items in a pre-
During the pandemic, farm visitors need to be safe from expected hazards like moving machinery, as well as exposure to the coronavirus. Follow the recommendations of Alberta Health Services to keep everyone safe and healthy. Develop and follow a visitor orientation covering all hazards, including COVID-19. Lubeck says that in the case of
planned spot. Avoid unnecessary shaking or tossing of items that could cause COVID-19 droplets to shed, and place the item directly into the trash or washing machine. All potential COVID-19 exposed materials should be washed with hot water and soap that create suds to break down any virus droplets. Follow best practices to create a policy on your farm for transportation. Those who live and work together should travel together, rather than travel with others from another family unit. Limit the number of people travelling in one vehicle. Disinfect surfaces often. Keep as much space between people as possible, cover any coughs or sneezes, and if anyone is feeling unwell they should stay home. Create a transportation plan, train your workers and keep everyone safe. Continued on next page...

LOCATED 3 KM STRAIGHT WEST OF BEAVERLODGE ON TWP RD 720
At present, Alberta has the largest DEDfree American elm stand in the world, and it is important to protect this valuable resource worth well over one billion dollars. The Society to Prevent Dutch Elm Disease (STOPDED) is asking for your assistance to save our beautiful elm trees from this deadly disease. DED is caused by a fungus that clogs the elm tree’s water conducting system, causing the tree to die. The fungus is primarily spread from one elm tree to another by 3 beetle species - the smaller European, the native, and the banded elm bark beetle. The beetles are attracted to weak and dying trees, which serve as their breeding sites. Once the beetles have pupated and turned into adults, they leave the brood gallery and fly to healthy elms to feed and transport the fungus on their bodies from one tree to the next. Monitoring for the beetles is done annually throughout the province by STOPDED. The smaller elm bark beetles have been found throughout the province in low numbers and now the banded elm bark beetle is found in larger numbers throughout the City of Medicine Hat and area. Leaves on a DED-infected elm will wilt or droop, curl and become brown, appearing in mid-June to mid-July. Leaves on trees infected later in the season usually turn yellow and drop prematurely. Leaf symptoms are accompanied by brown staining under the
bark. All DED suspect elms must be tested in a lab, so if you think you see DED symptoms call the hotline. What to do Be aware of the Alberta elm pruning ban between April 1 and September 30. The beetles are most active at this time and can be attracted to the scent of fresh tree cuts, possibly infecting a healthy elm. Remove dead branches and trees as they can provide beetle habitat only between October 1 and March 31. Dispose of all elm wood immediately by burning, burying or chipping. Report all suspect trees to the DED Hotline at 1-877-837-ELMS. A confirmed DED tree must be removed immediately to prevent further spread. What not to do Do not transport or store elm firewood at any time. DED and the beetles are declared pests under The Alberta Agricultural Pests Act. Do not transport elm firewood into Alberta. Firewood is confiscated at all the Alberta-Montana border crossings. Do not prune elms between April 1 and September 30. To report a DED suspect elm tree or for more information call the STOPDED hotline at 1-877-837-ELMS or visit Society to Prevent Dutch Elm Disease.

‘When the time came to sell our ranch, consisting of 32 quarter sections in one block, we wanted to ensure we received fair value for this rare assemblage and so decided to go with CLHbid.com. We especially liked the fact that CLHbid.com was specifically designed for the sale of agricultural land, and offered a unique selling feature in their en bloc system. We feel the en bloc feature increased the value of our land considerably. I would certainly recommend CLHbid.com to anyone looking to sell their farm or ranch.’ Dean Swanberg - Partner, Kleskun Hills Bison Ranch
