Child safety this summer

Consider that the biggest risks on the farm for children are machinery, animals and water. With these factors in mind, Peterson suggests starting with a safety audit that involves your children. “Look around your farm for these risks so you can have conversations with your children. Take them with you for a walk. Talk about why chemicals are stored where they are. Talk about where the helmets are kept. Develop rules around the risks you have identified and explain those rules. Determine your non-negotiables and communicate them. Are they allowed to ride the ATV? Are they allowed to ride without a helmet?”

“A good place to start when thinking about child safety on a farm is to consider what children are on the farm and how they interact with the farm,” says Raelyn Peterson, farm safety coordinator with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. “Are they my grandkids, children, friends of my children, farm workers with children, visitors or a combination of these?”

She says to express the rules of your farm to everyone - including neighbours, visitors, and your own children - especially around the most hazardous areas. Working youth “Youth, especially in the tween and early teen years, can be hurt doing work that is not appropriate for their age or ability.” Make rules for youth to follow, such as not working alone. Ensure youth are given the time and attention that they need to properly learn how to complete the task at hand. Children under 4 Supervision is key for this age group, and Peterson says that it needs to be constant to be effective. “Young children are curious and their love to explore can be fatal on a farm. Creating a safe play area around the house or area where you can actively supervise is one system that many parents use on their farms.” Community

“Some fear this topic could turn into a parenting conversation, but it needs to be about safety. Be open to talking with neighbours and friends about farm rules. Working together makes it easier to create a culture of farm safety and how to make safe choices. Children imitate adult behaviour including positive adult behaviour - so be the leader and show them how to be safe on the farm.” Connect with the Alberta Farm Safety Program: Toll free: 310-FARM (3276) Email: farm.safety@gov.ab.ca

Breakfast Brief WILL GRAIN MARKETS SEE A SUMMER WEATHER RALLY? (July 17, 2020, FarmLead.com) Grain markets this morning are mostly green as the complex starts to weigh some weather challenges, especially on wheat prices. While wheat prices fell yesterday on the futures boards after a big jump on Wednesday to a 3-month high, which was the result of some weaker outlooks for the European and Black Sea wheat harvests. On the flipside, China continues to buy U.S. soybeans, but it doesn’t seem like it’s enough to catapult these markets higher, given the Harvest 2020 outlook right now. It’s a pretty similar dynamic when it comes to China buying U.S. corn exports. Nonetheless, traders are said to have been large sellers of corn and soybean contracts this week, but buyers of wheat.

Wheat Prices the Anomaly in Grain Markets?

While US corn exports sales to China have garnered a lot of attention this week, wheat prices have found some strength on production downgrades in Europe, the Black Sea, and Argentina. In Argentina, 87% of the wheat crop has been planted, but it has been into some pretty dry conditions and the lack of moisture doesn’t look like it’s going to let up any time soon. More specifically, a mild La Nina event is expected to hit Argentina between September and December, challenging a wheat crop as it nears the finish line. As mentioned earlier this week, the Argentine wheat harvest was downgraded by the Rosario Grains Exchange by 3 MMT to an 18 – 19 MMT range, while the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange says they’re likely going to cut their acreage estimate. Further, Strategie Grains downgraded their estimate of the European soft wheat harvest yet again, this time by 600,000 MT to 130.9 MMT. If realized, this would be a 11.5% drop in production year-over-year, more than 10% decline that the USDA shared in their July WASDE report. Moreover, Strategie Grains shared in a note this week that “the level of projected stocks on the world remains very precarious.” This aligns well with timestamped call in a Breakfast Brief a month ago that any production downgrades to the 2020/21 wheat harvest in major exporting countries could help catalyze wheat prices higher. One of the countries that I specifically called out in that post was Ukraine, and right now, the USDA is expecting a 9% decline in their wheat harvest, whereas the local USDA office in Kyiv is expecting a 15% decline to 24.7 MMT.

One last pasture shot with the PCBFA

As discussed, it is important to look at the full picture and the reality is that it’s not all bullish in wheat markets as there’s been those aforementioned rains falling recently in Europe. While this has slowed harvest progress, it’s helping replenish soil moisture for the fall planting campaign for the 2021 crop. One of the EU’s top wheat producers, Poland, is expected to harvest 11.7 MMT of wheat (+6% YoY), according to the USDA attaché there. Further, in Germany, the farm co-op there, DRV, raised their estimate of the country’s wheat crop by 300,00) MT to 22.5 MMT. While that’s still about 2.5% below last year’s wheat harvest, grain markets are acknowledging that’s it’s not all that bad.

LEN’S TREE SERVICE LTD Residential & Commercial Tree Removal

With some of these production woes though, the game of wheat exports musical chairs that I discussed in a Breakfast Brief in the beginning of June is starting to show up. So far, we know that wheat exports out of Ukraine and Russia are tracking behind a year ago, as farmer selling has been weak with the smaller yields coming off there. Put another way, farmers thinking prices will increase, and as result, the usual onslaught of wheat being delivered off the field isn’t happening this year.[10]

• • • • • •

One other major factor to consider is protein availability. So far in the U.S. winter wheat harvest quality assessment, average protein levels are sitting at 11.2%, below last year’s “disappointing” 11.3% average, and the five-year average of 11.7%. That said, it’s expected more U.S. Northern Plains and even Canadian wheat will be making its way to millers around the country, and even abroad. One last point to consider: the combination of smaller U.S. spring wheat acres and expectations for weaker protein in Montana and South Dakota Have a good weekend! Researching pulse performance Enhancing Field Pea, Faba Bean and Lentil Productivity and Resilience through Germplasm Screening is one of the pulse projects underway by the pulse research team at Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AF). “This project screens germplasm from multiple breeding programs to determine the best adapted and high performing lines in different areas of the province,” explains Christy Hoy, pulse crops research agrologist with AF. “Findings from the project are important as the data contribute to the development of new high performing varieties for producers in the province.”

Now in the third year of the 5 year project, field trials are ongoing at 6 locations - Barrhead, Namao, Vegreville, Lacombe, Brooks and Lethbridge. Trials are grown to standard agronomic practices, and data collected include per cent stand, days to flower, plant height, lodging resistance, physiological maturity, seed quality, 1000 seed weight and grain yield. “Genetic diversity between programs is important,” notes Hoy. “One program may have genotypic attributes that another does not, which reduces risk to the entire industry or having an ‘all your eggs in one basket’ situation.” She adds that while this project is not a breeding program per se, with a breeder making a physical cross, Alberta and Western Canadian growers are reaping the benefits. “Those field pea and faba bean varieties that are being selected over those diverse environments are more robust,” she explains. “Breeding programs are developing material with enhanced quality, new market traits, superior disease resistance and resilient agronomic performance. This project provides Alberta data there by ensuring new lines perform well under Alberta’s growing environments.”

This project on field pea, faba bean and lentil adaptation accesses pulse genetics from a large number of pulse breeding programs from Western Canada, France, United Kingdom, Germany and Netherlands. Their performance is evaluated in Alberta so that the genetic diversity of the crop kinds and agronomic characteristics can be easily observed in different agro-ecological areas in the province.

Canadian Grain Commission

Increasing awareness and understanding of agriculture and the food production system starts in the classroom, and what better way to do that than providing first hand experiences to teachers.

STATISTICS & BUSINESS INFORMATION

Inside Education is a not-for-profit education organization supporting perspective environmental and natural resources educational programs in Alberta. A group of Alberta teachers were lucky enough to participate in an agricultural innovations tour across central Alberta before the threat of COVID-19 changed the world. The tour included stops at a feedlot, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry’s Crop Diversification Centre North and Olds College.

“At Inside Education our mandate is supporting teachers and inspiring students,” said agricultural educator Julie Fisher. “By organizing these types of programs, we create the chance to support teachers in their own learning. By giving them hands on experience, they have better tools to take these topics back to the classrooms and bring these ideas to life.” Fisher added that teachers also met industry professionals and gain access to experts to secure as much knowledge on these topics regarding agriculture and natural resources as possible. “We then try to help them develop an activity or learning that they can implement in the classroom via a classroom workshop, which is more focused on the actual teaching side of things.” Matt Chomistek, a teacher from Cochrane who was on the tour, said that he comes from a farming background, but the tour really opened his eyes. “My dad and grandma had a dairy farm, and we calved out around 100 beef cows. I also worked on a feedlot and the farms that provided the feed for the animals. I thought I knew what agriculture in Alberta was like – was I ever mistaken. The Inside Education Professional Development (PD) Day gave me the chance to see the incredible scope of practices and production there is in Alberta agriculture. It was truly incredible to see innovations in traditional agri-businesses and brand new food production techniques.”

SHIPMENTS

This type of educational tour gives education professionals from all backgrounds the chance to learn about agricultural initiatives in Alberta and in turn, develop course work and content that will educate their students about agriculture in Alberta. While on the tour, teachers asked questions about how to convert the practices of these agricultural businesses into projects for the classrooms and incorporate the learnings into educational material. Teachers from across the province were excited by what Inside Education’s programs could do for their classrooms. Morinville Community High School teacher Neil Korotash said that he could see how this type of professional development changing his school. “We visited a mushroom farm in Nisku, and they offer a discounted rate to schools on their used production equipment and some of the ingredients needed to start your own farm,” says Korotash, excited by the prospect of something new to grow in their school garden. “The fact that the manufacturers can make things available to schools at a discounted rate is incredible. These are very easy projects and we can have the students learning about how the family farm we visited works.” R0011782243

from previous: putting ag back in the classroom

“These types of tours and professional development opportunities should be important to all educators. It’s about making people comfortable about agriculture – teachers being more comfortable teaching topics relating to agriculture and students being more comfortable learning about it,” said Korotash. “Opportunities like this from Inside Education do exactly that. It gets people thinking about ways to address agriculture in the classroom.” Inside Education received funding for

the tour through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership’s Agriculture Literacy program. This funding allowed the Inside Education program to cover all costs from the tour and even a supply teacher subsidy, which allots a portion of finances to offset the cost of having a substitute or supply teacher cover their classrooms. This grant program supports initiatives that build industry communication capacity to increase public and consumers’ awareness and understanding of agriculture and the food production system. The tour was well attended which speaks to the interest and need for increased learning and understanding of agriculture and the need to bring it to the classroom. All 27 in attendance chose to be there and further their education to pass on to their students, which is important for the future of agriculture in Alberta.

On point with poisonous plants on pasture By Dr. Joana Varga During the summer months, cattle are kicked out to pastures. Pastures are blooming and so are many toxic plants. Here are some plants that can be toxic to cattle livestock specifically;

Water Hemlock: Water hemlock is one of the most common plants in Canada. It is frequently found in wet environments and pastures along streams or banks. Small amounts of the toxin in this plant can kill cattle. The amount of toxin present in the seeds and leaves varies but is highest in spring and late summer (autumn to early winter). The toxic agent, cicutoxin causes violent seizures and respiratory paralysis leading to death. The most common findings seen with Water Hemlock is cattle found dead

in pasture, often with evidence of struggling (thrashing/seizing). Unfortunately, there is no treatment for water hemlock toxicity in cattle and prevention is best. Water Hemlock can be confused with water parsnip (not toxic) as they look very similar.

Bluebonnet (Lupines): Bluebonnet’s commonly grow in the foothills and mountain ranges. Normally, cattle will not eat excessive amounts of this unless there is lack of other feed source or if pastures are too mature or dry. The toxic property in Lupines are alkaloids and the plants become more toxic during the late summer. It can cause various signs of poisoning, such as increased salivation/frothing at the mouth, and effects on the brain (depression or excitation). The main issue lupines cause are birth defects seen in calves from heifers/cows that have ingested it during early pregnancy. Common birth defects include cleft palate and leg deformities also known as “Crooked calf syndrome”. There is no known treatment for Lupines except removing cattle from the source or removing plant from pasture.

If a severe toxicity occurs, seizures and death may be noticed. Tall buttercup that is found in hay is not toxic as the toxin decomposes during the drying process of hay making it safe to ingest for cattle. Cows ingesting hay contaminated with buttercup may have a reddish colour of milk giving it an unpleasant taste to their calves. Treatment is attained by removing them from the source. Prevention of tall buttercup is achieved by good pasture management through promoting healthy grass by fertilizing and not overgrazing pastures.

Buttercup: Buttercup is usually found in crops, pastures, and along lakes/rivers. The toxic product in buttercup is activated when ingested by cattle or other grazing livestock causing irritation and blistering of the skin, mouth and throughout the digestive tract. Clinical signs of toxicity are increased salivation or foaming.

Larkspur: Larkspur is found in mountain valleys at high elevation. This plant grows rapidly with increased soil moisture. Tall/short Larkspur is very tasty to cattle making toxicity more common. The toxic substances, various types of alkaloids, are found in all parts of the plant, including the stem, leaves and flower. The clinical signs of cattle with toxicity are muscle paralysis (staggering, stumbling, recumbency) leading to respiratory failure, bloat and eventually death within as little as 15 minutes. Cattle suspected with larkspur should not be worked or stressed as excitement/exercise intensifies signs of poisoning. Sheep are less susceptible to larkspur as their bodies can tolerate higher levels of it. Like many other plants, there is no treatment for larkspur toxicity and prevention is key with avoiding exposure and herbicide treatment.

Slow things down to speed things up! Slow things down to speed things up. I recently took a harmonica course online and it was super helpful but I need to do it again. It takes a lot of repetition to get things to stick and I for sure did not master all the techniques. One of the things the instructor kept saying was to continuously slow everything down. Slow it down and get all the little details correct. Whenever I did what I was told it went smooth and faster than I thought it would. The human in us wants to be very direct line in our approach and go for the gold immediately somehow thinking we can avoid the digging. If there is gold on the surface there will be a lot more to be had if we will put in the effort. Gold is heavy, picking the pieces of the surface has immediate short-term rewards but you will find much more rewards on the end of a shovel with sweat running off your nose digging for the mother lode. Limited gold lays on the surface, most of it requires a lot of digging. If we only take the easy stuff on the surface we miss most of what is available.

There were 99 harmonica lessons; he suggested that a couple lessons a week or 1 a day would get great results. So, I thought I would do at least 3 a day or more because I might miss practise on some days. How many lessons I did a day wasn’t as important as how well I did each lesson. He would play or show me the whole lesson then go back and break the lesson down into step by step pieces to get to the end result. From years of teaching horsemanship to students I know better than to go for the gold right off but would have to try once in awhile struggle a bunch, mess it up then start at the beginning and do what I was told. Which always produced results quicker, easier, more quality and opened the door for much more potential growth. If our foundation is poor we won’t be able to build much of a building. If I see someone doing something that I want to learn and they are getting the results I want to get I’ve found the best

way to get there fast is to do exactly what they show me. If I try to skip a few pieces or go straight to the end result I might get something similar but not with the same quality and I very likely have missed learning the exact skills I needed to learn that I could use in many other areas. Whenever we change, leave out, avoid the things that are difficult our results will not be the same as the person we are learning from. To get a quality end result that does not have a ceiling on it I have found that I need to follow exactly step by step piece by piece the exercise I’ve been given. Loading a horse in the trailer for example. Two people load their horses. Both horses are in the trailer. One horse is physically in the trailer, the other horse is mentally, emotionally and physically in the trailer. A huge difference in the approach, the technique and the way of thinking that would have been used. The human that put the horse physically in the trailer only, has created many other problems for themselves and the horse in the future. Both horses are in the trailer but one horse will have issues the other does not. That is just one example of many things we do with horses and one method has a very limited room for growth. What our horses think about us is very different in each scenario. The students that learn the fastest are the ones that follow

the technique or exercise the closest. Practise the details, the step by steps and therefore get the best results with the least hassle. We can all to easily put the cart ahead of the horse. Put value on things that aren’t near as valuable as we think. Softness before during and after any maneuver is more important by far than the maneuver itself. Backing a horse up with his nose sticking out pushing on the reins is far less important than having them soft and giving to the rein. I’ll worry about the feet moving when I get some softness. Moving a braced up horse all around has a very limited potential. We can see a horse back up but that’s all we see and that becomes the goal. We make backing the most important when softness actually is far more important. If you have found someone you want to learn something from follow their example, slow it down practise the details and skills needed, use the exact techniques they are sharing with you, don’t skip or change some things, don’t get direct line in your thinking or approach, make sure you understand what really is important. Happy learning, Glenn Glenn has a complete horsemanship program and offering year round educational opportunities at his facility near Fort Saint John, BC

Dangers of bluegreen algae

“If you are trying to determine the cause of poisoning, there are other potential toxins on the farm that can also cause damage to cattle such as poisonous plants, such as water hemlock.” Elgert says that first and most important step is to identify the type of growth. Blue-green algae can look like blue-green scum, pea soup or grass clippings suspended in the water. He suggests watching for it when temperatures increase. If blue-green algae is suspected in a dugout, he says it is best to be cautious. “You should contact a water specialist to diagnose the growth to determine if it is potentially a toxic growth. You should also remove your livestock from the water source in the interim and prevent them from accessing it. One rule of thumb is that if you can grab it as a solid mass in your hand, it is not blue-green algae.” If blue-green algae is present, the dugout can be treated using a copper product registered for use in farm dugouts. Once treated, consumption should be restricted for up to a month. “The use of copper will break the cells open and release the toxins if present into the water all at once,” he explains. “It’s important that you stop using the water during this time so the toxins can degrade. You can follow up with aluminum sulfate and/or hydrated lime treatments afterward to remove nutrients from the water to prevent regrowth.” He adds that there are also preventative measures that can be taken to try to avoid the problem. “Temperature is an important factor in the growth of blue-green algae, so a deeper dugout with

Nutrients are required for growth of blue-green algae and information about reducing nutrients from entering the dugout can be found in Quality Farm Dugouts. Nutrients can be reduced by buffer strips and grassed waterways. “Dugouts should not be built in the waterway, as sediments can bring more nutrients into the dugout and depth can be lost quickly,” explains Elgert. “Aeration of the dugout can also help improve the water quality. A dye packet can also be thrown into the dugout to help prevent photosynthesis from occurring, thereby reducing the growth of blue-green algae. However, one action alone may not be enough to prevent growth.”

He notes that the wind can push the blue-green algae into highly concentrated pockets where the risk of harm is higher. “Since blue-green algae can rise or fall in the water column, inspection of the dugout should include peering into the deeper part of the water. Always be safe around the dugout by going along with another person and have a rope with a flotation device attached.”

“Blue-green algae is actually cyanobacteria, and can produce toxins that can be very dangerous,” says Shawn Elgert, agricultural water engineer with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. “It can cause organ damage or even death if ingested by livestock or pets.”

The CYL Program is a national youth initiative of the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association, which annually pairs participants with a mentor in their specific area of interest in the beef industry and provides networking and travel opportunities tailored for personal and professional growth.

The 24 semi-finalists were selected by a panel of judges from a highly impressive pool of over 50 written applications submitted from young people across Canada ages 18 to 35. The semi-finalists will face the final round of competition during the annual CYL Selections event on August 10, 2020, which is moving to a virtual format this year due to COVID-19. mentorship in their specific area of interest, which in the past has included sustainable grazing practices, nutrition, marketing, industry advocacy and more. In addition, the effects of COVID-19 have drastically impacted the 2019-2020 CYL participants’ ability to take full advantage of travel, networking and mentorship opportunities provided through the program. We are pleased to be extending the 2019 CYL program year, where the 2019 participants who were originally set to graduate this summer, will now be graduating in August 2021. This means there will be two groups of CYLs for the 2020-2021 program year. We look forward to the additional opportunities this will allow CYLs to connect with likeminded young people from across Canada passionate about the success of the beef industry. This year also marks the 10year anniversary of the CYL Program which has seen over 120 graduates since the program was founded in 2010.

Bale handling safety “To increase the safety of baling procedures while ensuring the job gets done, look for hazards related to baler operation, handling, transporting and stacking,” says Kenda Lubeck, farm safety awareness coordinator with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. “Once you identify hazards, make the necessary changes to ensure the safety of all workers.” Hazards include: Handling Ensure no children play near hay balers, carriers and stackers. Properly train workers operating tractors, front-end loaders or forklifts. Tractors with cabs, FOPS (falling object protective structure) or four-poster ROPS (rollover protective structure) used to lift round bales are essential. Two-poster tractor ROPS offer no operator protection from bales falling back off forks or bale-loading frames. Ensure bale-loading attachments on tractors and forklifts are secure and well fitted. Carry bales as low to the ground as possible.

Ensure sufficient counterbalance on tractor or forklift vehicle. Hydraulic control valve should be specific to the front-end loader attachment.

Keeping you rolling through COVID-19

Baler operation Ensure baler is properly connected to the tractor. Make certain adequate safety guards are properly fitted. Never allow anyone to ride on the baler. Prevent others from getting too close to the baler. Watch for and clear any buildup of loose, combustible material in the baler. Ensure an updated fire extinguisher is fitted to the machine. Stop engine, disengage PTO and apply flywheel brake - on square balers - prior to making adjustments or repairs. Extra care and attention should be made when reversing or turning the machine. Work during the day when there is adequate lighting. Stacking

Stack bales on even ground. Stacks should be clear of overhead power lines. Stacked round bales should be adequately chocked and the borders posted. Watch for and replace damaged bales at base of stack. Stack bales tightly and at a stable height. Do not stack bales higher than safe operating height of farm tractor or forklift. Never allow children to play on stacked bales. Do not handle more bales than is safe for the loader. Transporting Carry heavy loads of bales with a sturdy trailer.

Ensure proper restraining frames on the back and front of trailer. Use fitted hooks to secure load with ropes. Watch for overhead power lines on or near roads. Avoid rough terrain that can cause bales to become unstable. Travel at safe speeds at all times. People should never ride on loaded hay trailers. This is highly dangerous. Producers applaud new NAFTA implementation The Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA) applauds today’s entry into force of the new North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and looks forward to the continued growth of the benefits of free trade. CCA thanks all those involved in negotiating the agreement and the stewarding of the agreement through the respective government processes in a time sensitive manner. For three decades, the cattle and beef producers in Mexico, Canada, and the United States (U.S.) have competed and prospered under the trade framework of NAFTA. Under the new NAFTA, Canada’s beef producers will continue to enjoy the benefits of duty-free trade and market-driven demands for beef, live cattle and genetics.

continue to build on the success we have all enjoyed as partners under NAFTA. Following implementation, CCA encourages further regulatory cooperation and efforts to advance coordinated supply chains across all three countries. The CCA continues to encourage the Government of Canada to create new opportunities for beef exports. International trade agreements and market access are crucial to the beef processors, ranchers, allied manufacturers and companies in the food supply

chain and will positively impact both the agricultural sector and the broader Canadian economy. The benefit of a strong beef industry is also not only economical in nature, but also environmental. The North American beef industries protect through sustainable use, the at-risk great plains ecosystem. Here in Canada, beef producers protect and sustainably utilize 44.2 million acres of grasslands. The implementation of the original NAFTA led to a significant

growth in jobs and contribution to the Canadian GDP by the beef industry. Canadian beef exports to the U.S. grew 67 per cent in volume and 338 per cent in value from 190,000 tonnes valued at $530 million in 1995 to 317,000 tonnes valued at $2.3 billion in 2019. Similarly, beef exports to Mexico grew 15 times in volume and 32 times in value from 1,000 tonnes valued at $3.7 million in 1995 to 16,500 tonnes valued at $126 million in 2019. Impressive growth attributed to NAFTA was also experienced in the U.S. and Mexico.

“In the face of the economic hardships of COVID-19, it is timely and welcome that the new NAFTA enters into force, providing the continuation of economic stability for our rural communities, food systems, and the broader North American economy,” states Bob Lowe, CCA President. In addition to preserving dutyfree trade in live cattle and beef, CCA is pleased that the existing rules of origin and the vital dispute settlement provisions remain intact, allowing us to

FCC AgExpert partners with 14-year-old innovator

Agriculture is one of the most technologically advanced industries in the world and

14-year-old Luke Silinski is inspiring his peers to be a part of it. The Canadian farm kid’s summer plans include the realization of a dream, the launch of an ag tech learning program he created as part of his company, Ag Tech STEAM. Farm Credit Canada (FCC) AgExpert has joined Ag Tech STEAM as a key partner in the development of the online learning series that teaches rural youth about the exciting science, engineering, art and math fields of agriculture. STEAM is offering the learning modules especially for students who live in rural and remote areas. Luke is passionate about sharing technology with the next generation of farmers. “For kids who can’t get to coding or engineering camps, or hop a bus to their local library, we can bring those skills to them through online programs at agtechsteam. com.” Silinski explains, “I want to help kids access ag tech and STEAM projects wherever they live.” “This partnership supports Ag Tech STEAM by giving families access to educational materials without them having to travel to urban centres, pay for expensive courses or buy costly equipment,” says Fred Wall, marketing vicepresident at FCC. “Agriculture relies heavily on technology and ‘smart farming’ is a key to the future. From bugs, soil, and plants to livestock and equipment, technology, robotics and computers are involved, but we need the people to make it happen.” Ag Tech STEAM calls the learning modules, “content packs,” and the first one will be available this summer focusing on

entomology. With over 50 content packs in the works, students will be able to access tools and projects on a variety of topics including crop and soil sciences. Each will explore activities that fall under the STEAM themes of science, technology, engineering, art and math. They will include both online and hands-on projects and experiments. Students can register for these content packs through agtechsteam.com. To assist Ag Tech STEAM in the creation of content, Silinski is working with Olds College Smart Farm team. “Through our partnership with FCC and Ag Tech STEAM we are providing mentorship and access to our in-house experts,” comments Dr. Joy Agnew, association vicepresident, applied research, at Olds College. Silinski has grown up around farming and his dream is to teach kids about ag tech. “I noticed a lot of my classmates didn’t have access to ag tech, but they loved farming. I want them to know they can learn both agriculture and other fun and challenging areas like coding, robotics and engineering.”

BERNIER: Peace River agriculture will play key role in recovery The COVID-19 pandemic has shown the critical importance of food supply chains. Restaurant customers have stopped ordering. Retail stores have to face new, unpredicted demands like the run on flour for baking. Lots of hard work has gone into adapting to rapidly changing conditions presented by the pandemic. Lucky for each and everyone of us, agriculture is a sector used to dealing with rapid and unpredicted change.

Last year, farmers faced real challenges getting their crops off. This year, they have faced flooding that’s kept them off the land and put their many crops at risk. But right now, the weather looks good. Let’s hope that continues so our farming neighbours can get through the rest of the season successfully. When I talk to people down south, many of them think that oil and gas are the only economic activity that happens up here. I make sure to let them know that the resource sector is hugely important for our region and our province, but so is agriculture. After all, the Peace makes up almost one third of the land in the Agricultural Land Reserve. Farming drove the settlement of the Peace Country. The Canadian government started the 20th century encouraging people to move here because of the incredible farming potential of British Columbia’s only prairie region. The sector took off after the railway arrived in 1916, and we haven’t looked back since. Farming helps support so many families and build our communities in the Peace. Our producers are major players in BC agriculture, delivering almost 90 per cent of the grain and 95 per cent of the canola in BC, along with 90 per cent of the dry field pea and 95 per cent of the forage seed crops. These prairie crops are feeding people and feeding livestock. And the hundreds of ranchers with herds across the Peace know this, and how much it helps them play such an important role in our communities and in keeping meat on tables across the province. And it’s not just prairie crops. Our local farmers are growing potatoes, beets, cabbage, rutabagas, carrots, lettuce, peas, tomatoes, and sweet corn. And our beekeepers are producing more honey than any other region -- the famous and soughtafter Peace River honey.

Here in the Peace our farmers know that better than most. After all, farming the northernmost lands suitable for agriculture in Canada comes with built in challenges. Early winter. Late springs. Rain. Insects.

Our agriculture sector is diverse, and the families and communities it supports helps make our economy more diverse. Join me in wishing our farmers the best of times as we move though the long daylight hours of the summer.

FRESH FRIENDLY FUN

42 The Northern Horizon, July 24, 2020

for staying Acreage Auction Sale Steps safe during haying FOR

ALBERT & JUDY DALLAIRE

Few things beat the smell of fresh cut hay on a sunny summer day,” says Raelyn Peterson, farm safety coordinator with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry.

Directions from Peace River: West on Highway 2 to Range Road 224, then 4kms (2.5 miles) South. Directions from Peace River Airport: East on Highway 2 to Range Road 224, then 4kms (2.5 miles) South. Watch for signs. For information: Call 1-780-625-6767

“However, the challenge many farmers face is balancing their own wellbeing with this time of the year - break downs, soggy hay fields, rain showers and the rest of those farm chores that need tending.”

SATURDAY, AUGUST 8, 2020 • 11:00 A.M. PEACE RIVER, ALBERTA

She offers these suggestions: Eat healthy and nutritious meals and snacks

AUCTIONEERS NOTE: The Dallaire’s are relocating and are selling a good portion of items they have collected over the years.

“Proper nutrition will leave you feeling alert and ready to focus on the task at hand.”

She suggests filling a lunch box with healthy and easy to eat snacks such as fruit, cut-up vegetables and nuts. Use refillable containers to prevent fruit from becoming bruised or too soft. “Keep lunches interesting. Choose different types of breads, cheeses, protein and mix it up.” Get adequate sleep “Sounds easy enough, but getting enough sleep can be hard to achieve in the seasonal rush,” says Peterson. “Lack of sleep has detrimental effects on the body and can lead to brain fog and low concentration. That increases the risk of an injury or a safety incidence.” Not enough sleep can also affect judgement, decision making and mood, which can lead to irritability, anxiety and depression. Try to keep to a sleep routine as much as possible, and power naps can also be helpful. “Ask for help when you need it,” she adds. “Your family, friends, neighbours and community need you home safe every night. Know your limits and honour that. Without you, the farm is nothing.” Take a break “Make taking breaks a priority as they will help keep you alert,” notes Peterson. “Include some stretching as well, as sitting in the cab of a tractor or a hay bine for hours a day can take its toll on your body.” She adds that stretching helps keeps muscles flexible and strong which is needed to maintain a range of motion in our joints. “It is easy for muscles to seize up when you are bouncing over the fields and constantly turning your head to see your machine. Neck, shoulder and back pain creates tension and can lead to stress.” She suggests checking out these webpages - 5 simple exercises for truck drivers, farming fit part 1 and farming fit part 2 for ideas. Stay hydrated Drink plenty of water, and she suggests either adding ice cubes to the water jug or freezing half bottles of water and then adding water to fill.

“It is pretty common to see rural Albertans and farmers walking briskly up and down rural roads as they understand the importance of exercise,” she adds. “Use this time to clear your mind, listen to music, your favourite podcast or as an excuse to see how the neighbour’s crops are doing. Sneak in some family time by taking a child along for the walk. They will love the one on one time with you.” Connect with the Alberta Farm Safety Program: Toll free: 310-FARM (3276) Email: farm.safety@gov.ab.ca

Tracking feeder association cattle

Feeder associations have been part of the agriculture landscape of Alberta since the 1930s. Now, thanks to a pilot project conducted by Picture Butte Feeder Co-operative (PBFC), feeder association producers can use radio frequency identification (RFID) tags to trace their livestock. Agriculture and Forestry Minister Devin Dreeshen recently signed the ministerial order to approve RFID tags as an approved manner to identify cattle pursuant to Section 16(2) (b) of the Feeder Associations Guarantee Regulation (FAGR) after the pilot project concluded at the end of June. This means that RFID tags are an approved manner of identification, along with branding. “When I started with the coop and in our own operation (Schooten and Sons) where we feed quite a few cattle, the only cattle we were mandated to brand were the feeder association cattle,” explains Shane Schooten, chairman of the PBFC. “In

our own operation, where we promote employee safety, animal welfare and cattle comfort, using RFID as the identifier moved us closer to those goals.” Schooten and the PBFC approached Alberta Agriculture and Forestry about conducting a pilot project to look at other options to identify feeder association cattle. “We needed another option without having to physically brand these cattle and yet maintain the integrity of the government’s Feeder Association Loan Guarantee Program and to keep the PBFC’s investment secure,” Schooten says. All cattle are required by law to have a Canadian Cattle Identification Agency (CCIA) approved button tag, which is a low frequency RFID tag. For the first trial of the project, approximately 5,000 head were tracked by both brand and RFID tag, with the brand used as a control or backstop. PBFC

supervisor Broek Murray verified the tag information collected by the feedyard on the animal’s arrival at their facility. That verified information was then submitted to the office by Murray. From there, PBFC administrator Dick Haney’s team drafted the loan documentation using the tag numbers as security. The team conducted a couple more trials after the first was complete. Schooten says that they had a slippage rate on tag read of less than 1% and overall, the verification process was pretty seamless. “Data collection at the feedlot is happening already,” explains Schooten. “Every feedlot over 1,000 head is supposed to be reporting their RFID tags. We figured most feedlots should have the technology and capability to collect these tags already, so we weren’t going to create an issue for them.” “The RFID tag numbers are what we use as collateral to secure our loans,” notes Haney. “We had to satisfy both ourselves and the ministry with this project that we had a system that we were quite confident was reliable and sustainable.” Haney adds that there has

been a major uptake by the coop’s membership due to the pilot project, with approximately 35 to 40% of the cattle being traced using RFID tags instead of branding. Schooten believes that the option of using RFID tags instead of branding will benefit feeder associations. “If branding is no longer a requirement to be part of a feeder co-op, feeder associations will gain business and new clients. In my opinion, it makes record keeping a little easier. We’re moving with the times. We’re using technology versus physical attributes.” Schooten considers both branding and RFID as legitimate identification tools, but he wants other options for producers who are trying to enhance their safety protocols in their operations and their humane management of their cattle. “One of the things we all have to be cognisant of is that the end user of our product is the consumer,” adds Haney. “The consumer is very mindful these days about animal and employee welfare, so the use of RFID as the identifier of cattle is a tremendous opportunity to for feeder associations and the ministry to react and respond to some of those concerns.”

CBBC becomes division of CCA The Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA) is pleased to officially welcome the Canadian Beef Breeds Council (CBBC) as its newest division. This decision was reached by the leadership of both organizations following the work undertaken by an advisory committee to analyze the benefits and costs of the CBBC joining CCA.

pandemic, the Canadian beef industry needs to work together to address challenges as they arise. The biggest challenges may not come from within the agricultural sector, but from outside, and strong organizations with the capacity to deal with any situation is key to building and maintaining resiliency in the Canadian beef industry.

This increased alignment will result in positive impacts on the entire Canadian beef industry through increased collaboration, coordination, and expanded outreach efforts. CCA and CBBC have worked closely together on a number of initiatives, so the integration made sense from both a logistics and a philosophical perspective as both organizations work to grow the industry.

“This is an important time in the Canadian cattle industry and aligning organizations with similar goals will create opportunities that will have longterm benefits for the entire beef industry,” Dave Sibbald, CBBC President.

“Having CBBC as a division of CCA further unites our industry under one roof which will return more value to beef producers for their investment,” noted Bob Lowe, CCA President. As seen with the COVID-19

‘After over 50 years on our Ranch we decided to sell. After looking at various options we elected to go with CLHbid.com. CLHbid.com totally removed the stress that comes with business dealings between neighbours and friends. All bidders had an equal chance to bid in privacy online. We are convinced CLHbid.com got us the highest sale price we could ever have expected for our Ranch. We were not required to pay for an expensive guarantee either. Given their legal background the CLHbid.com team was most helpful in all aspects of the selling process. On sale day, the Ranch sold in just 3 hours to 3 neighbours. We were never informed as to who was bidding or who was second highest bidder and liked it that way. In the end, the Ranch sold on our timeline, for top dollar and we remained friends with all our neighbours.’ Tom & Carole Rycroft, Ranchers – Devon, AB
