A trend with beef cattle producers in northwestern Alberta is growing annual cocktail blends for forage production, with those blends including cereals, grasses, legumes and brassicas. ‘There’s a lot of interest in the Peace Country about cocktails, and there are a lot of questions,’ explains Buthaina Al-Maqtari, research technician with Peace Country Beef and Forage Association (PCBFA). She notes that cocktail blends could increase forage production, improve water and

soil quality, increase nutrient cycling, moisture conservation and crop productivity. They may provide a broad range of possible ecosystem benefits, including nitrogen provisioning and weed suppression, as well as improving soil carbon stocks. ‘Talking about the ecosystem benefits of cocktails is really important,’ Al-Maqtari adds. ‘There are a lot of producers who care about their soil, and they’re asking a lot of questions about how to improve it. Cocktails are one way to do that.’ In 2019, PCBFA began its 2-year

Corn & Wheat Prices Battle for Top Performance (FarmLead.com, October 23, 2020) With corn prices on the front-month December 2020 contract toying with $4.20 USD/bushel, it’s worth mentioning that whenever we’ve got near these levels in the past, there’s been a lot of producer selling. But as Bob Linneman from Kluis Advisors noted yesterday, “the timing of these prior highs was during the summer rally (and) as long as the bull spreads in corn and soybean markets remain strong, this bull rally will stay intact.”

project, Multispecies Cover Crop Cocktails in Northwestern Alberta: Agronomic Performance, Ecosystem Services and Economic Advantages, at its Fairview Research Farm. Seven cocktail blends consisting of 2 to 8 crop species were tested against 2 cereal monocrops. All of the treatments including monocrop cereals were tested at 3 seeding rates – 100, 125 and 150% of recommended monoculture seeding rates. For the cocktail blends seeding rates, an equal amount method was used to ensure that seeding rates for each species in the blend was proportional to their monocrop rate. The treatments were replicated 4 times, and all legumes in the blends were inoculated with granular nitrogenfixing inoculant at seeding. A seeding depth of three-quarters of an inch was used. Now that the second growing season of the trial is complete, the research team is collecting and analysing the data. ‘We hope with this project that we will be able to provide information and details for producers to determine the best seeding rate to optimize their forage production, along with maintaining the economic and ecosystem benefits that come along with seeding a cocktail,’ Al-Maqtari explains. ‘We want to see how cocktails are effective in improving soil fertility and

Further adding support to corn prices was more export sales of 1.83 MMT reported yesterday, which was well above the trade’s expectations. Considering that China has bought about 12 MMT of corn from the U.S. now, and an estimated 5 MMT from the Ukraine, it’s widely expected that Beijing will raise their quotas for corn imports. And they basically have to, given that the current quota is just for 7.2 MMT, and while companies can import corn as not part of the quota, Chinese government import tariffs of up to 65% can be applies. With nearly 5.4 MMT of U.S. corn exports so far through Week 6, shipments are now more than double what they were a year ago. While corn prices are up more than 10% since the start of October, Chicago wheat prices are far behind, tracking nearly 9% higher over the same time frame. We don’t yet know where Chinese corn demand is going to be capped, and while it feels a bit top-heavy already at this point, I’m still cognizant of a cheap U.S. Dollar and record corn prices in China are suggesting the buying will continue. Comparably, even though SRW wheat prices on the futures board continue to sit at 6-year highs, they may have more upside as speculators are piling onto the La Nina train. In that vein, in their weekly report, the Buenos Aires Grains Exchange dropped its Argentine wheat harvest estimate yet again, this time by 700,000 MT, down to 16.8 MMT. Competing firm, Rosario Grains Exchange is currently sitting at 17 MMT, while the USDA pegged the Argentine wheat harvest at 19 MMT in this month’s October WASDE report. Add in that Ukraine has already shipped about 57% of the quota that the government has suggested to the markets and there are quite few bullish factors we need to stay on top of.

Chickpea Prices vs Faba Bean Prices Relative to years passed, chickpea prices continue to feel somewhat depressed. However, that’s mainly attributed to record supplies in Canada for the 2020/21 crop year, thanks to another relatively large chickpea harvest and the large carryover of supplies from the 2019/20 crop year. The latter bearish factor was largely attributed to smaller volumes of chickpea exports going to traditional customers like India and Pakistan. In the U.S., however, the garbanzo / chickpea harvest was estimated to be about 38% smaller year-over-year at just over 175,000 MT. Combined with decent size for the global chickpeas harvest, I don’t think there’s a lot of room to the upside for chickpea prices right now unless there some sort of major, black swan production or demand event that is impossible for anyone to foresee (i.e. production concerns during India’s winter/rabi crop growing season). That said, with kabuli chickpea bids sitting around 30¢ CAD/lbs on the Combyne agricultural trading network this week, it’s still better than the chickpea prices we saw a year ago. On the flipside, it’s a demand issue that’s weighing on faba bean prices. This is largely because the world’s biggest buyer, Egypt, has got a few extra months’ worth of supplies after the country’s food vendors were on COVID-19 lock down and couldn’t sell anything! As a result, one Egyptian international trader has suggested that Egypt may import 100,000 MT less than they normally would; Canadian farmers grew about 122,000 MT of faba beans this year! However, because of the current weakness in faba bean prices, some substitution effects could start to take place, as faba beans slowly replace the increasingly expensive yellow pea prices (something I mentioned in Monday’s Breakfast Brief). We’re still seeing $8 CAD/bushel fababean bids listed on Combyne, which isn’t a bad price, but likely where we’ll be until some stronger demand returns. One factor that could help was the smaller, poorer quality crop in Europe this year, largely because of a new ban on certain insecticides that farmers have used previously with much success. Thus, human consumption quality faba bean prices may have a little more room to the upside. However, there’s one last factor to consider for faba bean prices: the huge crop from the Land Down Undaa. With a faba bean harvest estimated to be somewhere between 520,000 MT and 600,000 MMT, the latter of which would match the current record set in 2016/17. Nonetheless, at even 520,000 MT, the Aussie faba bean harvest would be about 60% higher than a year ago, and more than double what it was 2 harvests ago! Needless to say, supply should satisfy current demand but there could be some COVID-19-related buying sprees in the coming months so stay diligent, and perhaps set up a Combyne Market Alert (found in the Notifications section of your Combyne Profile). Have a great weekend! To growth,

soil quality along with enhanced forage yields and their quality.’ The research team will also conduct a cost analysis to compare input costs and output revenue and look at how cocktail mixtures can be tailored to meet a producer’s goal and their production system. They will also look at what’s needed to produce an economic mix that retains maximum crop diversity. Al-Maqtari notes that besides all of the benefits for a producer’s soil, growing cover crops could be beneficial to the producer’s bottom line. ‘If a producer wants to seed a cash crop after seeding an annual cocktail, in general, it’s going to improve the soil. There is a benefit besides growing a good quality forage.’ ‘Our hope is that following the data analysis of the results later in the fall, we will be able to determine some significant trends, profitable blends and an optimum seeding rate for livestock production.’ Funding for this project was provided by the Governments of Canada and Alberta through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership under the Environmental Stewardship and Climate Change Program. In Alberta, the Canadian Agricultural Partnership represents a federal-provincial investment of $406 million in strategic programs and initiatives for the agricultural sector.

Fall fertilizer application September and most of October have seen favourable field conditions for fall fertilizer application throughout the province, with most cereal and oilseed producers having competed harvest,’ says Ryan Furtas, market analyst with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. ‘The past few wet years have played havoc with the traditional practices of fall nitrogen fertilization. However, since mid summer Alberta soils have been relatively dry, allowing for a small window of application post harvest.’ He says that advantages of a fall application

includes reducing spring workload and better pricing as fall fertilizer prices can reflect slower demand than in the spring. ‘If a producer is certain of their cropping plans, applying all the required nitrogen can be an option. However, a more modified approach may be needed due to potential over winter losses or prolonged wet spring soil conditions. A producer may then consider applying less than the full rate of nitrogen in the fall and applying additional nitrogen in the spring during seeding.’ Nitrogen is the most common fall applied

and the largest volume applied fertilizer in the province. ‘That makes it the most expensive nutrient for Alberta producers,’ he adds. ‘Phosphorus and potassium are typically placed with the seed, so there is no advantage to applying these fertilizer products in the fall.’ The most common fall method to apply nitrogen is to band either urea (46-0-0) or anhydrous ammonia (NH3) (82-0-0) to cool soils – less than 10°C.

Fernando adds that this latest Trends in Retail can help Alberta food manufacturers identify product and market opportunities within the baking needs category. ‘Manufacturers may wish to focus on innovation in sweeteners, dry ingredients such as flour, baking chips, graham wafers and crumbs, cake mixes, pie fillings and yeast. Such innovations may also focus on meeting consumer demand for low trans fats and gluten free products. Doing so ensures that the quality, texture, and taste of these products is considered to be high quality and better than or equivalent to conventional products.’ The report also includes an annual and quarterly analysis of retail and food service sales trends in the province.

‘As elsewhere around the world, COVID-19 has inspired Canadian consumers to cook and bake more while staying at home,’ explains Jeewani Fernando, provincial consumer market analyst at Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. Sales in the baking aisle surged, growing 26% in the year-to-date period ending the first week of April, 2020. She says that retail data for selected sub-categories – flour, sugar, baking chips, canned milk and yeast – showed growth over the previous year, with yeast sales growing 88% over the previous year. ‘Comparatively, yeast sales were trending downward before the outbreak, posting a decline of 6% for the 52 weeks ending January 4, 2019.’

NLC rodeo team rides through the cold You’d be forgiven for thinking that rodeo season is over for the winter. For the Northern Lights College Rodeo Team, their season is still just getting started. For the first time this year, the team has full, weekly use of the facilities at the Moore Ranch for practice. After two months outside, they moved into the Moore’s indoor facility this week with the turn of the weather. Though there’s no heat, there is shelter from the wind, and the team is poised to practice there three days a week, Tuesday to Thursday, through to the Christmas break.

Wednesdays the team works on calf roping, coached by former Canadian rodeo champ Clayton Moore. Specified practices like this are not only rare for these athletes, but also for many in the Canadian Intercollegiate Rodeo Association. “We didn’t have practices like this last year so it’s a big change. This year since we’re down here at the ranch it’s a bit better, we’re by ourselves, we can do whatever we want, and get as much time in as we want,” said Cole Harris, who is in his second year with the team.

Though there have been no college rodeo competitions this fall, the CIRA is hopeful there will be competitions early in the new year and expecting imminent news on the prospect of a January start. “I’m excited for competitions to start, knowing that there are potential ones are coming up and I feel like we’re all going to be ready after all these practices in the winter,” said Tyler Bondaroff, who is also in her second year with the team after being a dualcredit student last year.

On Monday and Friday nights, the team has use of the Lakota Agriplex, giving it a warm practice session to bookend the week.

Cole’s brother Justin Harris joined him from the lower mainland this season, making the move to Dawson Creek.

There’s no denying the athletes will have a cold winter of practices ahead of them, but they aren’t letting that dampen their enthusiasm.

“It’s nice to have all the coaching, this many practice nights, and be hands on with the coaches. It’s a lot better now than being outside,” said Grade 12 student Tucker Esau, who is a member of both High School Rodeo and the NLC team as a dual-credit student.

“I’m really enjoying it. It’s nice to get to practice every week and get a head start on competitions,” Justin said.

“You just have to push through the cold, once you get going it’s not that bad anyway,” said Bondaroff.

Cold riding.

The team has different practices each day.

Equine Cushing’s Disease Dr. Samantha Deamel There are 2 main metabolic diseases in horses; pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction and equine metabolic syndrome. These diseases occur when there is an imbalance of hormones in the body. There are many organs that play a role in hormone production and regulation and when this breaks down, clinical signs start to arise. With treatment and management these hormones can be regulated and the clinical signs can be reduced or even resolved. Today I would like to focus on pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction. Pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction, also known as PPID or equine cushing’s disease, is a neurodegenerative disease leading to dysregulation of the hormones, including ACTH which allows an increase in circulating cortisol levels in the body. The exact mechanism of the disease is not fully understood but there are theories that oxidative stress or a misfolded protein accumulating in the pituitary gland could be factors initiating the disease process. There are many different clinical signs associated with the disease. The most well-known symptom of PPID is abnormal shedding of the hair coat, generally occurring in the spring. The long guard hairs hang on giving an abnormal hair coat. Muscle wasting or muscle loss is another common sign but this can be difficult to differentiate with the process of aging normally. This can be combined with

abnormal fat distribution known as regional adiposity. The sites for fat deposits are usually the neck crest, tail head, behind the shoulder, above the eyeballs or in the sheath/mammary region. The increase of cortisol also suppresses the immune system making horses with this disease more prone to chronic infections as well as predisposes them to laminitis and sometimes chronic foot abscesses. More subtle signs can be present such as infertility or abnormal mammary gland development. Diagnosis is based on the clinical signs and blood work. The test of choice is to measure the levels of ACTH in the blood at rest. There are more in depth tests to stimulate/suppress different hormones but testing the ACTH levels is an accurate and easy test. The levels can be affected by season as well as underlying concurrent disease. For this reason we like to test horses who are overall in good condition and have associated clinical signs

to reduce the risk of having false positives. Treatment and management of PPID will help to control the clinical signs of the disease and improve the overall health of the horse. Regular management including regular of hoof care, routine veterinary exams, parasite control, routine dentistry, and proper nutrition will improve the quality of life and improve comfort. Prascend is the drug of choice when treating PPID. It acts to regulate the hormones to bring them back into balance. Treatment is live long to control the disease. It is also recommended to retest to ensure that the dose of Prascend is appropriate for the horse. The most common side effect of this medication is anorexia. If this occurs it is recommended to stop the medication until they are eating normally again and then start again but at a lower dose and slowly increasing to the desired dose. Often this will allow the horse to receive the benefits of the medication without the side effects. The overall prognosis is good.

Speculators in the futures market – friend or foe? The futures market originated as a means for buyers and sellers of a commodity to be able to set a price in advance of delivery of the physical product. This has advantages to both the buyer and seller in their business planning. ‘Commodity futures are a leveraged instrument,’ explains Blue. ‘That is, relatively little deposit is required to control a much larger value of product. Although the percentage varies by commodity, market volatility and brokerage firm, the deposit needed is typically only 5 to 10% of the value of the physical product to which that futures contract relates. That leverage is of great convenience to buyers and sellers who use the futures market to set a price for a physical product either produced for sale or purchased for some use.’ He adds that leverage is also attractive to speculators who try to profit from market price moves and neither produce nor use the physical product. For a trade to occur, each buyer must have a seller or each seller must have a buyer. Some speculative trading in the futures and options market is a good thing in that their trading activity adds trading volume, which helps hedgers to more easily enter and exit the market. ‘However, over the last 25 years,’ he notes, ‘there has been more speculative money involved in the futures market. It has been estimated that more than one trillion dollars is involved in the commodity futures and options trade.’ Speculative funds tend to follow market trends and their activity may, at least in the short term, seem to ignore supply and demand fundamentals. There are limits on how many contracts that one entity can hold in a futures market. After the financial collapse in 2008, there was an investigation into speculative activity and it was determined then that speculators did not have unacceptable market control. ‘Speculative funds move money in response to market signals,’ says Blue. ‘The majority of speculative money had been short – that is, net sell positions – with the soybean and corn markets since the beginning of the trade dispute between the U.S. and China back in mid-2018. A related factor is the value of the

U.S. dollar, which had fallen since mid-March 2020 on the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. A lower U.S. dollar tends to be supportive to U.S. commodity prices. ‘Then, as the corn and soybean markets began to rally in midAugust on dryness and storm damage in Iowa crops as well as strong export activity, the spec funds began to offset their short positions by buying futures. As buying continued, funds accumulated a net long, or buy, position.’ Figure 1. United States dollar index (daily high-low-close) versus United States November soybean futures (solid line) Each week in the United States, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission gathers and releases information on what groups hold positions in each commodity futures market. ‘The October 6, 2020 report showed that managed money funds were net buyers of 28,000 corn contracts over the previous week,’ he explains. ‘That made them net long over 134,000 contracts compared to a 320,000 net short corn position in midJuly. Even more significant – funds had increased their net long position in soybeans to 238,000 contracts, comprising 19% of total outstanding soybean contracts and approaching the record high spec fund position of 254,000 soybean contracts.’ Blue adds that the implications are at least two-fold. High speculative fund open interest implies that the funds may defend their position with continued buying of the soybean futures. However, should the funds decide for some reason to take profits on their buy positions, they could sell en masse, forcing the futures market quickly lower. What does this means to an Alberta producer? ‘Our crop prices have been supported by U.S .market activity despite the harvest here of what is expected to be near average yields of above average quality,’ he says. ‘For producers concerned with missing out on still higher prices, depending on cash flow needs, it seems prudent to sell some crop into current price strength. Then, use a put option or similar commercial pricing strategy to retain marketing flexibility and yet leave price upside open.’

Keep pruning until March! With the annual ban lifted, it’s time to start taking the dead wood out of your elm trees,’ says Janet Feddes-Calpas, executive director of the Society to Prevent Dutch Elm Disease (STOPDED). ‘To help eliminate elm bark beetle habitat, elm sanitation is essential to an integrated Dutch elm disease (DED) prevention program to keep Alberta DED free.’ She explains that between October 1 and March 31, is the time when the elm bark beetles - responsible for spreading the deadly DED fungus - are not active. Elm bark beetles feed on healthy elms, breed and overwinter in dead and dying elm trees. ‘If elm trees are pruned between April 1 and September 30, beetles will be drawn to the scent of the fresh pruning cuts, potentially infecting an otherwise healthy elm.’ She adds that having elm trees pruned properly is important and that STOPDED recommends that all trees be pruned by a professional arborist such as an ISA Certified Arborist. ‘They will determine what

type of pruning is necessary to maintain or improve the health, appearance and safety of your trees. Improper pruning, topping or removing an excessive amount of live wood is not recommended, as this type of pruning will weaken the tree’s structure and shorten its lifespan. It is essential that all pruned elm wood be properly disposed of by burning, burying or chipping by March 31. And, it’s illegal to store elm firewood since it could be harbouring elm bark beetles.’ In August, 2020, DED was confirmed in 2 elm trees in Lethbridge. They were removed immediately from a public boulevard and disposed by the City of Lethbridge. With the removal of these infected trees, Alberta continues to have noninfested status. Alberta continues to be pressed from its borders with Saskatchewan and Montana, both of which are battling the disease. ‘There is no cure once an elm is infected with DED, and it must be removed and destroyed immediately,’ she says. ‘We must stay vigilant to keep our elms

healthy. DED can be prevented.’ For more information, call the STOPDED hotline at 1-877837-ELMS or go to the Society to Prevent Dutch Elm Disease webpage. To find an ISA Certified Arborist, go to http:// www.isaprairie.com/. DED is a regulated plant pest in Canada under CFIA’s Plant Protection Act.

Board directors gave first two readings of bylaw amendments on Thursday that would allow retailers to operate in service-commercial, serviceindustrial, local commercial, and neighbourhood commercial zones in the region. Stores would be prohibited within 200 metres of a school or daycare, and prohibited within 100 metres of parks, places of worships, medical clinics, rehab centres, and other cannabis businesses.

Alberta and Canada reach caribou conservation deal Both the governments of Canada and Alberta believe entering into a conservation agreement under Section 11 of the federal Species at Risk Act demonstrates meaningful progress that will benefit caribou in Alberta and their survival in the wild. “I am pleased to announce that the governments of Canada and Alberta have signed a conservation agreement under the Species at Risk Act that commits to taking actions required to support woodland caribou recovery in Alberta. The Government of Alberta, along with Indigenous Peoples, industry stakeholders, and many others have taken steps to support caribou recovery and I believe this agreement will help fulfil obligations to future generations of Canadians. The Government of Canada recognizes that at this time this collaborative approach – as opposed to an order under the Species at Risk Act – represents the best path forward for the conservation and recovery of boreal and southern mountain caribou in Alberta,” said Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Together, Alberta and Canada are acting on a shared commitment to address caribou conservation and recovery. The agreement supports Alberta’s ongoing caribou recovery program and sets out clear caribou conservation, management and recovery actions with timelines for achieving naturally self-sustaining caribou populations and habitat recovery. “This agreement with the federal government is consistent with Alberta’s commitment to end decades of uncertainty around caribou recovery and land use. Our negotiated Section 11 agreement puts Alberta’s needs first, instead of having an order imposed on us under the federal Species at Risk Act. Alberta’s government will continue to

work with our many partners on developing common-sense solutions to protect caribou populations, maintain jobs and grow local economies. Albertans want to ensure that their communities have input on caribou recovery solutions that work,” added Jason Nixon, Minister of Environment and Parks. “ That is why I established three caribou task forces made up of people who have a stake in these important caribou ranges. The agreement also builds on the momentum that Alberta’s government created last year through its Caribou Sub-regional Task Forces and establishes timelines for the work of the task forces, including consideration of social, economic and environmental values when advising on sub-regional plans.” The agreement acknowledges Alberta’s ongoing work to recover caribou and their habitat, and includes: Moving ahead with land use planning that enables a working landscape and supports achieving caribou recovery goals. Mechanisms for approving oil, gas and forestry projects that align with caribou recovery outcomes. Considering socio-economic implications of the conservation and recovery measures needed. Restoring critical caribou habitat by planting trees in historical seismic lines. Managing wildlife population to support caribou recovery. Monitoring caribou population, habitat status and recovery trends. The governments of Canada and Alberta also commit to sharing information and engaging with Indigenous Peoples on progress related to the implementation of measures in the agreement and opportunities for collaboration. The agreement builds on the momentum Alberta’s government created last year through itsCaribou Sub-regional Task Forces,

establishing timelines and milestones for their work, including consideration of social, economic and environmental values when providing advice to government on subregional plans. Engagement with affected Albertans is key to achieving caribou recovery in Alberta while addressing the needs of communities. A diverse group of Albertans, including the forestry and energy industries, Indigenous communities, municipalities, local business and environmental and conservation organizations, provided feedback on the agreement. This feedback helped develop the conservation and recovery measures that will be implemented. The governments of Canada and Alberta have committed to provide funding to support implementing the agreement. This agreement will be key to managing caribou recovery while maintaining jobs, building local economies and supporting strong communities – particularly as Alberta recovers from the economic effects of COVID-19.

34 The Northern Horizon, October 30, 2020

2020 dairy outlook update: cautious optimism toward recovery At the start of the year, we identified four economic trends and issues that were likely to affect profitability in the dairy sector in 2020: Slow production growth Expanded market access to foreign dairy products Robust domestic demand for dairy products Higher milk price and input costs In this outlook, we update our forecasts, examine what has influenced profitability in dairy so far in 2020 and identify trends to monitor for the remainder of the year. Milk revenues on the rise Our mid-year update outlined how COVID-19 shifted consumption patterns and upended profitability. The outlook has since improved with prices trending up as yields for butterfat and proteins are improving after their seasonal low in the summer. Demand for dairy products is also closing on its pre-pandemic level. Our projections for the Western Milk Pool (WMP) are similar to the mid-year update. For the P5 (all Eastern provinces except for Newfoundland and Labrador), the outlook improved because

SOFTWARE N YOUR PCI

ed .

t will cal.

of higher butterfat price than anticipated and increases in the U.S. price for non-fat dry milk. We expect lower average revenues and costs for 2020 than in January (Table 1). The average returns of dairy farms in 2020 will be lower than forecasted in January as costs declined less than revenues. Trends to watch for the remainder of 2020 Our forecasts assume that: 1) the impact of COVID-19 on dairy consumption continues to subside; 2) the immediate impacts of the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Trade Agreement (CUSMA) are gradual and not overly significant on prices for butterfat and proteins. 1. Consumer demand for dairy products There is a risk that dairy consumption declines in the last quarter of 2020 as foodservices are constrained to reduce activities under a second wave of COVID-19 cases. Foodservices are large buyers of cream and cheese. Their closure means a drop in the demand for dairy products and, consequently, farm revenues. 2. Production returning toward its pre-pandemic level, but no quota increases in the East yet

Our forecasts are on per hectoliter basis, and they don’t capture the impact on profitability from production cuts. A crucial element of profitability is that dairy farms operate at their most efficient scale. The P5 has not re-issued production quotas since the cuts in the spring and will likely wait for more certainty about the demand before returning quotas to their pre-pandemic levels. In the meantime, the P5 is using incentive days to control production. The P5 issued incentive days for the months between August and November but no news yet for the months beyond November. Starting October 1st, the WMP removed all restrictions on credit days and increased production quota by three percent. The WMP also added incentive days for October and November. Producers have been able to use credit days in the summers such that total milk production in Canada in July exceeded the levels observed in the previous two years. 3. Exports of skim milk powder CUSMA includes provisions for increased access to the Canadian dairy market, modifications to the Canadian dairy pricing system and limits to exports of skim milk powder (SMP) and infant formula. All three can impact profitability, but let’s focus on export limits. Canada agreed to 35,000 MT of SMP and 40,000 MT of infant formula export limits, each implemented on a dairy-year basis (August to July). Exports of infant formula have been historically

PrairieCoast inspec early booking prog offers will be ba October 2020, but can still book you season inspectio

low but will rise after the Feihe International plant in Kingston, Ontario begins production. SMP exports will likely hit the ceiling. Figure 2 shows that in the previous three years, the export limits would have been hit between December and March. We only have data for August of the current year, which indicates that exports have been below those in the previous years. Exports of SMP beyond the limit will be subject to an export charge of $0.54 per kg. This means either that exports of SMP will be taxed or exports will stop, and SMP will be processed domestically, possibly under a lower-value milk class. In any case, the outcome should pressure downward the price paid to dairy producers. 4. Global and Canadian economic recoveries Recent forecasts show a steep decline in GDP in 2020 but less pronounced than initially feared. Most GDP forecasts point toward a mix of V- and U-shape recovery. An increasing number of studies find a K-shape recovery: a situation where some parts of the economy are improving while others worsen. A strong and uniform economic recovery across all income levels will be crucial for strong demand and growth in the dairy industry. GGC disappointed by lack of federal attention for agriculture priorities Following today’s Speech from the Throne, the Grain Growers of Canada (GGC) are disappointed that many of the pressing needs for Canada’s agriculture industry were left unaddressed by the federal government. Earlier this week, GCC launched its own Speech from the Combine, outlining six priority areas for Canada’s agriculture sector that require immediate attention, in the hopes that this messaging would be reflected in the throne speech. These areas included: Business Risk Management programs; agricultural science and innovation; crop health; trade access; carbon tax exemptions; and cellular service and connectivity in rural areas. “Our goal with the Speech from the Combine was to provide the government with clear and specific directives for what our industry needs right now to drive an economic recovery and benefit all Canadians,” Nielsen explained. “We are disappointed that so little attention was paid to addressing the challenges facing our sector.” During the Speech from the Throne, it was stated that, “[the] Government will recognize farmers, foresters, and ranchers, as key partners in fight against climate change, supporting efforts to reduce emissions and build resilience.” GGC is pleased with this statement as we have consistently shared with the government

that farmers wish to be part of the solution. Unfortunately, this sentiment has not been reflected in the recent conversations that we have had with the government. “From consultations on carbon offset protocols to the criteria for the proposed Clean Fuel Standard, we have not felt that our perspective has been acknowledged,” said Nielsen. “We hope that today’s message sets a new tone going forward as we are more than willing to step up and play a role in addressing climate change.” Going forward, GGC will work closely with federal and provincial agriculture ministers to ensure that Canada’s agriculture industry remains top of mind, Nielsen added. “Although we are disappointed today, we will continue to do what we always do – advocate for Canadian farmers.” One bright spot was the indication by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that ‘improving rural connectivity’ will be a priority for this session of parliament. “COVID-19 has highlighted more than ever how critically rural areas need improved cellular wireless, internet connectivity, and broadband access,” Nielsen said. “The cutting-edge tools available in today’s agriculture world, which help us reduce inputs and produce more crops on less land, are only as good as the connection they have.”

Beef Ration Rules of Thumb This factsheet can both guide producers through a feed test and help them understand the results. With a feed test in front of you, look at the following rules and compare them to the feed test. Remember, these are rules of thumb, which means they hold true most of the time, but variations in management and cow type will affect the end result. These rules of thumb should not be considered a replacement for balancing rations with proven software, but rather an aid to understand the feed and where it fits in the management. Rules of Thumb Dry matter Always refer to the “dry matter” numbers. These numbers have the moisture factored out and allow the comparison of all feeds, from silage to grains. rude protein Protein is a building block. The Beef Cow Rule of Thumb with protein is 7-9-11, which means an average mature beef cow requires a ration with crude protein of 7 per cent in mid pregnancy, 9 per cent in late pregnancy and 11 per cent after calving. The method to monitor protein in terms of cow performance is to look at the manure – high levels of undigested fibre in the manure indicate low protein. Crude protein with feeder calves The Feeder Calf Rule of Thumb is 14-12-10. A feeder calf from 550 to 800 lbs needs a ration of 14 per cent protein, from 800 to 1,050 lbs needs 12 per cent protein and from 1,050 lbs to finish needs 10 per cent protein. An implant program will create variations to this rule, so check with the implant manufacturer. Energy

Energy gives the ability to use the building blocks for growth and other productive purposes. Learn one of the six measures for energy and stick with it. Using Total Digestible Nutrients (TDN) per cent, the Rule of Thumb is 55-6065. This rule says that for a mature beef cow to maintain her body condition score (BCS) through the winter, the ration must have a TDN energy reading of 55 per cent in mid pregnancy, 60 per cent in late pregnancy and 65 per cent after calving. Energy can be monitored in the beef cow by watching BCS; low energy rations result in a loss of BCS. Other energy units of measure include Digestible Energy (DE), Metabolizable Energy (ME), Net Energy for lactation (NEl), Net Energy for maintenance (NEm), and Net Energy for gain (NEg), and producers can develop their own rules for these measures if the need arises. Calcium to phosphorous ratio The calcium to phosphorous ratio (Ca:P) for a mature beef cow should be within the range of 2:1 and 7:1, assuming actual required grams of each are adequate. Using a feed test, the ratio is calculated by dividing the dry matter Ca (%) by the dry matter P (%). Ratios outside this range need to be addressed using feed blends or commercial minerals. Minerals On an average feed analysis sheet, two other related minerals are reported: magnesium (Mg) and potassium (K). These two minerals, in combination with calcium (Ca), make up the tetany ratio, which is K/(Mg + Ca).

South Peace Grain would like to assure all of our customers that we are going to remain open to the best of our ability during the COVID-19 pandemic. In response to the recommendations of government officials we have made the decision to enforce policies to further minimize the exposure between staff and customers in our facility. We are now asking all visitors to our facility to maintain a 2 metre (6 foot) dinstance from all SPG staff and other customers while on South Peace Grain property. You may be asked to stand outside of our office window or stay in the office entryway while we serve you. Hand sanitizer is available for customer use and we are regularly cleaning all contact points on a daily basis We will be providing “curbside, contactless service” should you require it. Please call 250782-7820 for service when you arrive and to arrange orders. We have a variety of payment options available and will do our best to accommodate all situations. At this time we remain open during our usual business hours, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm,

Monday to Friday. We ask that you place all large and custom orders at least 72 hours in advance to help our staff keep on top of the high demand. In addition to calling our main office line (250-782-7820) please also feel free to email any orders (email addressed listed below) or send a Facebook message for feed orders. Additionally, we have made arrangements for some of our staff to work from home on occasion. You may be asked to call these people directly to assist you with any specialized questions. Again, be assured that we will take care of your usual requirements from us, though it will be in a bit of a different manner than you are used to. Thank you all for your understanding during this time. Stay healthy, stay home if you can and remember to wash your hands! Sincerely, Staff, Management and Board of South Peace Grain
