Over the years of operation, the need for special equipment for grass and brush fires has grown. We had trucks, but nothing to help the crew get the equipment to where it would do the most good in a brush fire. This year’s project was to purchase a side-by-side with a skid unit, a trailer to carry it and equipment to where it is needed and the proper gear for our fire-fighters when they get to the fire.

Breakfast Brief “Everyone knows the more you chase something the faster it runs and the more you ignore something the faster it comes.” RoshonFegan (American actor)

GRAIN MARKETS IGNORING BATTLE FOR THE WHITE HOUSE

(FarmLead.com, Nov. 6, 2020) Grain markets this morning are mostly in the green as the U.S. Presidential election continues to dominate headlines. I haven’t written a Breakfast Brief this week since (1) I’ve been focused on helping users on our Combyne Agricultural Trading Network – both buyers and sellers – build their trading networks and (2) there’s no point speculating on who’ll win the White House since it’s clearly now going to be a legal issue. Trading notes on all the question marks surrounding Tuesday’s vote, my business partner and FarmLead COO, Alain Goubau, noted to me last night that both sides need to show actual physical evidence that corroborates with their accusations. I trust Alain’s judgement here as, in addition to being a great navigator of our ship here at FarmLead, he is also the owner of a law degree from Harvard University! In other news that makes me pull my hair out, Whole Foods Canada is not allowing its employees to wear poppies, on the basis that, under its recently-updated uniform policy, wearing a poppy is considered to be “supporting a cause”. [1] No kidding Whole Foods; the cause is called freedom and the poppy is a symbol of respect for the millions of soldiers, especially the Fallen, who have sacrificed more than you’ll ever comprehend (and just so that you can sell over-priced groceries too!). I’m not going to lie – I don’t shop at Whole Foods but not being able to wear a poppy at this time of year is, to me, the equivalent of spitting on the tombs of the deceased soldiers. I am honestly disgusted by Whole Foods’ ignorance and you should be too. The poppy is above political affiliation, and at a time where society seems to be so divided, the poppy helps bring people together.

Soybean Prices Top $11

Soybean prices on the futures board in Chicago topped $11 USD/bushel for the first time since July 2016 (nearly 4.5 years ago!) on expectations that the balance sheet is tightening up. Part of the reason for the push up above the psychologically important level is the U.S. Dollar will continue to be weak, relative to other currencies, as long as there’s uncertainty in terms of who’s going to be in the White House for the next 4 years. Keep in mind that this currency uncertainty is applicable to all portions of the grain markets, not just soybean prices. Also supporting soybean prices, though, is that data from the U.S. Census Bureau suggests that U.S. soybean exports to China hit 7.8 MMT in September, which is 1.3 MMT more than what the USDA’s export data is suggesting. This is certainly bullish news on top of bullish news, as soybean exports to China have already set new records for the months of August and September, as reported by Reuters. AgriCensus’ math suggests that U.S. soybean 2020/21 ending stocks could be revised down to 6.5 MMT (or 238.8M bushels if converting metrics tonnes into bushels) which is logical when you consider that, compared to the USDA’s total year forecast for soybean exports in their October WASDE, already 80% of this estimated volume has been contracted. The other factor supporting soybean prices is the delayed planting in Brazil due to dry conditions, which means that China and other major importers would rely on U.S. soybean exports longer than usual. The long range forecast for Southern Brazil is notably concerning as fields there are already suffering from severe moisture shortages. Conversely, we do know that farmers in Mato Grosso, the largest soybean-producing state in Brazil – are running their planters 24/7 to get the crop in. Nonetheless, because of the small amount of soybeans there that carried over from 2019/20 to their 2020/21 crop year, tradable inventories in Brazil are extremely tight and domestic soybean prices (and that of corn) continue to set records in the cash market.

China Loves Corn, Hates Australia

R0011781679

Grain markets are also recognizing that higher global prices for corn are also supporting that of feed grains like wheat and barley, and in that line of thinking, we continue see healthy contracting activity on the Combyne Agricultural Trading Network for all 3 of these crops. Supporting corn prices this week was an updated report from the USDA attaché in China that they increased their forecast for corn imports by the People’s Republic from 7 MMT to 22 MMT. The Beijing office of the USDA cited a small harvest, smaller carryover form 2019/20 and high domestic prices for the reason. On that last point, you’re rolling in profit if you’re a corn importer in China right now! On the flipside, China continues to put political pressure on Australia, now threatening to ban wheat imports from the Land Down Undaa, adding to Beijing’s existing embargoes on Australian barley, sugar, red wine, timber, coal, lobster, and copper.Further, any cargoes that are already enroute to China from Australia with any of the aforementioned goods will be turned around, due to “commercial reasons”.This all started 7 months ago after Australia officials pushed for an international inquiry into the origins of COVID-19 in China. That said, the Aussie wheat harvest is starting to hit the market, and with an abundant crop this year (after 3 years of drought), domestic wheat prices are now below that of Black Sea wheat of comparably protein. While the USDA will update their estimate of the Australia wheat harvest from their October WASDE estimate of 28.5 MMT, IKON Commodities is estimating that this year’s haul now looks closer to 32 MMT. Thus, as cheaper Aussie wheat gets exported to other Asian markets, this likely opens the door for more U.S. and Canadian wheat exports to fill the void. Have a great weekend! of a house – or even worse – in a pit, the oxygen in that enclosure can be displaced. It only takes a short time for a person in that enclosure to lose consciousness or even die if they breathe in this gas with little oxygen – even less time than if they try to hold their breath.’ ‘If an older pressure tank or cistern is in the basement and is not vented to the outside, gases can collect in the basement,’ he adds. ‘However, modern pressure tanks do not have a relief valve, so this problem does not occur with them.’ Another danger is the presence of a combustible gas, such as methane. A strong enough concentration could result in an explosion. Elgert explains how one well owner experienced this danger first-hand. ‘He was venting the gas out of a pressure tank inside a pump house because he thought the pump was introducing air into the water. He was near the pump when it kicked on, creating a spark, ignited the gas and blew up the pump house while he was still inside. He was fortunate it was such a short burn, and he only sustained minor injuries.’ Elgert adds that overpumping the well can make this problem worse especially when the water level is drawn below the top of the slots or holes in the casing where the water enters the well. ‘Other problems can occur on a high pressure day in winter. Air can go down into the well, freezing the pitless adapter and stop the water from pumping. Gases causing spurting from taps and loss of prime of the pump is another problem.’

Gases can occur naturally in water wells. The gases dissolve in the water while under pressure and are released when pumped out of the well. ‘Sometimes people complain about the smell, but the gases you can’t smell may cause the worst problems,’ says Shawn Elgert, agricultural water engineer with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. ‘Odourless gases include carbon dioxide, methane and nitrogen, and potential dangers may arise from them.’ Elgert offers these suggestions to maintain a safe well system: Wells in pits should only be worked on by someone with confined space entry training. Well drillers use gas meters to determine if there is enough oxygen in the pit before entering. The meters also test for some other gases including combustible ones. Existing wells in pump houses or unsealed wells in basements should be capped properly and vented safely to the outside. Older style pressure tanks in basements that can vent off should be vented to the outside. Overpumping the well can intensify the problem. An assessment of the well can be done to determine a system that would reduce overpumping. Collect a sample with an appropriate method and send it to an accredited laboratory for analysis. He says that water wells that ‘breathe’ have been fatal in Alberta. ‘On a low pressure day, gases can come out of the well head that can contain very little oxygen. If the well head is inside a pump house, in the basement

Talking camps! The camps here at the ranch are always some of the favorite times of the year. We had campfires, 3am sing-alongs, river rides and lots of laughs. I generally try to keep a horse handy of my own while I’m teaching the camps. My horse usually barely moves during the day. I might use him for an example of the exercise now and again. This very minimal approach always causes such a huge change in my horse. Even though we barely did anything. Sprinkling a bit of info into the horse and looking for a small change here and there stacks up to be amazing in such a short amount of time. Whenever I sprinkle every day instead of trying to pour in the info I get more done in less time. Grinding away at something always takes longer and isn’t fun for either horse nor person. Make a small change as soon as you can and move on to something new. You can come back to improve it more if needed later. A bunch of little wins in many areas stockpiles and the results are fabulous. It feels more like having fun than something we are trying to conquer.

If it ever feels like you are going backwards it isn’t so. What has happened is we have reached another stage in our understanding and awareness and now have to bring our skills to a higher level. An example might be if we try to do liberty and it isn’t working we should go back online. That’s not going backwards, we have just reached a new and higher level of awareness of what is needed. That is absolutely a step forward. As we progress thru the stages program the tasks are designed to do exactly that, keep us adding to our skills and understanding. So, if we are feeling stuck or it seems very challenging, know that we are right where we need to be. Being comfortable is ok to visit for a short rest, but you don’t want to live there. Growth and a growth mindset come from learning and doing things we haven’t done before which most often feels uncomfortable, difficult, challenging. Also, I would encourage you to do is video yourself and see if what you thought was happening looks the same on the video. It can be very helpful and eye opening. Of course, I’m always available to give you feedback and suggestions if you choose to send us a video. It can speed your progress incredibly by getting

a few helpful tips. We’ve just come back from Smithers and Terrace Clinics and the next events on the calendar for The Horse Ranch are clinics in Cochrane at Mission Acres and our winter program Horse Development and Front Row Seating. 2021 is shaping up to be busier than ever with three expos, clinics, camps and our annual trip to Costa Rica in January – all subject to the world returning to normal a bit more of course! Front Row Seating starts in November – November 2-13, 16-27 and November 30-December 11 – contact us for details via email or call us at 250.789.3072. Front Row Seating is offered as 10 or 5 day sessions (if the 5 day option it starts Nov 2, 16 or 30) I will be starting colts for clients, working with my top end horses, continuing foundation training on client horses and students can come ride, watch and get a lesson plan each day for them and their horse. Ride in a heated indoor arena for 10 hours a day if you like! Each day starts around 9am, running til 5pm and is chock full of learning as you watch horses learn and develop right before your eyes. You can pull up a chair, pour yourself a cup of coffee and watch a horse or horses that have caught your interest. It is remarkable what can change during the 10 days. We take 5 students maximum in each FR. And we still have spots left. Glenn Stewart

Dental health in dogs What is periodontal disease and how does affect my dog? Periodontal disease is a broader term that indicates the presence of gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) and periodontitis (loss of bone and tissue around the teeth) within a pet’s mouth. The reason dogs (and cats) develop dental disease is the same as us. When your dog eats a meal (kibble or wet food), bacteria along with saliva and food particles form a sticky film called plaque. The salts in saliva then harden the plaque within 24 hours. When plaque sits on the teeth for too long it triggers the immune system to cause inflammation to the surrounding structures like the gums and jaw bone. Inflammation then causes gum infections, bone loss, and ultimately tooth loss. Periodontal disease happens 5X more often in dogs than in people. Why? Because dogs have a more alkaline environment in their mouth than us, which promotes plaque formation. Secondly, dogs do not have their teeth brushed every day giving the bacteria in

the plaque more time to multiply and cause more damage. What are the signs of periodontal disease? One of the first tell-tale signs is something called halitosis meaning bad breath. This is usually passed off as normal “dog breath” and is missed. Dental disease is very painful and animals do well at hiding it. Once disease advances you may see signs including: Excessive drooling Inability to chew kibble or chewing on one side of mouth Pawing at the mouth Change in behaviour Why are small breed dogs more prone to periodontal disease? The simple answer is due to overcrowding of teeth in their tiny mouths. With crowded mouths, plaque is more likely to sit on and in between the teeth causing more plaque burden in the mouth. It is important that extra oral care is taken with small breeds dogs to increase their lifespan!

BYOB with independent nutrition consultant BARRY YAREMCIO GRAZING STUBBLE FIELDS Cows have different supplementation needs when turned out on stubble fields in the fall. Cows will pick and choose what they eat from the straw, chaff, throw over grain, weed seeds in the stubble, slough hay from the low areas and mature hay growing along the fences and headlands. The quality depends on what they eat, the type of crop grown, fertility program and stage of maturity when the crop was cut or harvested. How the combine was set will impact how much light grain and weed seeds were thrown out onto the ground. Straw, chaff and over-mature grass hays are typically low in protein, energy, calcium and magnesium. These feeds are also high in neutral detergent fibre, which can reduce total feed intake, and relatively high in phosphorus. Grains and weed seeds are also high in phosphorus and have higher energy and protein content than the grasses, straw and chaff. Most of these feeds are low in calcium and magnesium. A diet that is low in calcium and higher in phosphorus can reduce phosphorus absorption. This is important because phosphorus is the driver of all metabolic functions. When it is not absorbed, feed intake is reduced. That in turn reduces milk production and weight gain on the calves. Cows can also start to lose weight. A continuous imbalance can impair reproductive performance, with cows taking longer to cycle and conceive a calf next year.

Winter webwork

It is not common this time of year, but a calcium or magnesium deficiency can cause cows to go down, and it generally requires a veterinarian to treat animals in this situation. A mineral supplementation program should contain additional calcium and magnesium, but a 2:1 mineral does not provide enough calcium to remedy the situation. A feedlot mineral with a 3:1 or 4:1 calcium to phosphorus ratio is preferred. If there is a 1:1 mineral is left over from the summer, mix 1 bag of limestone - 38% calcium - with 1 bag of mineral and 1 bag of fortified trace mineral salt with selenium. One hundred cow-calf pairs should consume this mixture, weighing roughly 165 lbs. in 5 to 6 days. If consumption is too low, add 8 to 10 lbs. of dried molasses to the entire mix and adjust the amount of molasses to get the proper intake. If a 2:1 mineral is available, reduce the limestone to 20 pounds per mix. Feeds that are over-mature or crop aftermath are usually low in protein. A lactating cow needs a minimum on a dry basis 11% protein to maintain feed intake and milk production. Dry cows can manage on 8 to 9% protein.

Calving Clinics

Using tubs or block to supplement protein will help solve the problem. Calcium and phosphorus levels are typically low in this type of product. Concerns with a free choice tub or block are over or under consumption and the cost. Other options include feeding 3 to 4 pounds of grain every third day along with a protein supplement or wean the calves and put dry cows onto these fields (this reduces protein requirements).

Practical Calving Local Vets

Using Genetics for Herd Management

Creep feeding the calves with a ration that is between 14 and 16% protein will improve average daily gains. If feeding straight oats, which has 10 to 11% protein on average, the calves will put down fat rather than lean growth. They may not frame out properly, resulting in an animal that may be discounted at auction. A mixture of 1/3 peas and 2/3 oats or barley by weight will provide a creep ration that meets protein and energy requirements. With lower grain prices and high calf prices creep feeding will pay very well in the long run. Creep feeding also reduces the stress on the calves when they are weaned. They know what grain is and they have less problems adjusting to the new ration compared to calves that have not received creep feed.

Moo-ving forward with a business plan

‘Throughout 2020 and these times of COVID-19, we have had periods of uncertainty and adjustment not only personally but also affecting the farm,’ says Pauline Van Biert, research analyst with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AF). ‘For the dairy farmer, demand for milk production has fluctuated as processors made adjustments to meet changes in the marketplace.’ She says that many farmers mention having a business analysis that leads to a written plan for their farm, contributes to their peace of mind. It allows for better coping mechanisms when facing uncertainty and stress. Dairy farmers in Alberta can start this process by having a farm business analysis prepared

through participation in the Dairy Cost Study program. ‘Dairy farming and milk production is becoming more complex, and farmers need to be resilient and flexible,’ she adds. ‘Having current cost of production numbers removes the guesswork and helps farmers look at and think about farm management options. The analysis available through the Dairy Cost Study program, offered at no charge by AF, can help identify strengths and weaknesses and focus on moo-ving forward.’ ‘Do you know what it cost you to produce a kilogram of butterfat? How much does it cost you to feed one cow to get how much milk? Can you afford that new skid steer? Or a trip

to Mexico? Participate in the study to get your report and get answers to your questions.’ Using the business analysis provided from the study, farmers can benchmark themselves with others. ‘Benchmarking is basically grading yourself to others in a similar business,’ explains Van Biert. ‘Are your numbers good, average or poor? Use benchmarking to assess and see what is different from others, recognize areas your farm is performing well and increase knowledge scope. Further your knowledge on the cost of milk production in Alberta by referencing the latest Economics of Milk Production benchmark report.’

Asian giant hornet found in BC Abbotsford-area beekeepers and residents are being asked to report if they see any Asian giant hornets (Vespa mandarinia), following the discovery of one hornet in the 7000 block of Bradner Road on Monday, Nov. 2, 2020. Though Asian giant hornet activity declines rapidly as colder temperatures arrive, people are encouraged to report possible findings. This can be done through calling the Invasive Species Council of BC at 1 888 9333722, via the council’s Report Invasives mobile phone app or at: https://bcinvasives.ca/ report Single hornets were found in White Rock and Langley in 2019, and on 0 Avenue in Langley in 2020. A nest has never been found in the Fraser Valley or Lower Mainland.

focused on surveillance and trap monitoring along 0 Avenue with the support of local beekeepers and other organizations, as well as in Nanaimo, where a nest was located and destroyed in 2019. In October 2020, Washington State Department of Agriculture entomologists eradicated an Asian giant hornet nest following multiple findings of single hornets in the same area of Blaine. A sting from an Asian giant hornet can be very painful and cause localized swelling, redness and itching due to the larger amount of venom injected. However, the hornets are not interested in humans, pets and large animals. Asian giant hornets hunt insects for food and will only attack people when their nest is disturbed.

Wheat price spreads – anomaly or the new normal?

The Minneapolis Grain Exchange (MGE) has traded Hard Red Spring wheat futures for more than a century. The prices from MGE are used as reference for contracting prices of Canadian Hard Red Spring wheat. The Kansas City Board of Trade, purchased by the CME group in 2012, trades Hard Red Winter wheat futures. The Kansas City futures are used as the reference for pricing Canada Prairie Spring wheats and Hard Red Winter wheat. The Chicago wheat futures trades Soft Red Winter wheat futures and used for pricing Canadian soft wheats. ‘Typically, Hard Red Spring wheat is the most valuable because of its superior bread making qualities, including the relatively high protein level,’ explains Blue. ‘Usually, the price of Hard Red Spring wheat futures is highest of the 3, followed by Kansas City Hard

Red Winter wheat and Chicago wheat.’ Blue notes that relationship has reversed during the past several months. ‘During 2019, the Chicago wheat futures moved significantly higher than Kansas City wheat futures and, in the last few months, has moved higher than the Minneapolis wheat futures. The following weekly futures chart shows futures prices for those 3 wheat types and the price anomaly that developed where Chicago wheat is highest priced of the 3.’ Prices are driven by supply and demand factors. Blue says that recent projections vary for the 3 U.S. futures markets when looking at each class of wheat on the comparative end of year stocks and the stocks to use ratio - end of year stocks divided by that year’s total usage. ‘Stocks of Hard Red Spring wheat at

Minneapolis are increasing. Stocks of Hard Red Winter wheat at Kansas City are decreasing, and in Chicago, Soft Red Winter wheat stocks are projected to be similar after last year’s drop. From the U.S. perspective only, one could interpret that the Hard Red Winter wheat price has comparatively the best reason to increase during this crop year relative to the other wheats.’ He says that the weekly Commodity Futures Trading Commission report of October 30, 2020 shows speculators as being long, or net buy positions, 48,000 contracts of Chicago wheat, 41,000 contracts of Kansas City wheat and only 9,000 contracts of Minneapolis wheat. ‘The speculative influence can sometimes keep a market in a relative position longer than the fundamental numbers would suggest,’ he explains. ‘Market analysts will be watching the relative wheat prices as the crop year progresses. Influences include weather on the growing wheat crops across the world, new wheat supply from Australia and Argentina, and wheat demand, currently accelerated by the drive for food security in the face of COVID-19.’

Alberta Ag-Info Centre – here to help The Alberta Ag-Info Centre is the first point of contact for producers looking for more information about Alberta Agriculture and Forestry programs and resources. ‘We’re not just 310-FARM. I find we’re 310-everything,’ says Alberta Ag-Info Centre resource agent Brenda McLellan. The resource agents and administrators answer hundreds of phone calls and emails a month that include questions about the Canadian Agricultural Partnership program, Premise ID numbers and the Farmers’ Advocate Office. This past month they even fielded several calls about potential Norway rat sightings that turned out to be muskrats, pocket gophers or other rodents. Resource agents, Marie Glover and Mary Ann Nelson, both enjoy talking to producers and helping them with their questions. ‘It is very satisfying when you are able to help a client be connected to the person or resources that they need,’ says Nelson. ‘Over

the years as a unit, we have had a lot of positive feedback from producers.’ ‘It feels awesome to help all producers that call in but especially the elderly person or couple who doesn’t have a computer or any means to one,’ adds Glover. ‘I help them get their paperwork filled out and sent into the right department. They are always so appreciative for all the help I can give them.’ As the business model for Alberta Agriculture and Forestry has changed, so has the Ag-Info Centre. The agents and administrators refer producers for information about crops, beef and forage, farm management and horticulture and other topics outside of the ministry. Linda Maschio and Faye Baldwin are resource administrators with the Centre. Maschio agrees with her colleagues. ‘I like working with clients and helping people,’ Maschio says. ‘It feels wonderful to connect people to the resources they’re looking for.’

John Ware Reclaimed is a Canadian documentary film, directed by Cheryl Foggo and released in 2020. The film profiles John Ware, an African American man who moved to Alberta in the 1880s and became one of the province’s first significant ranchers. Made for the National Film Board of Canada, the film blends a portrait of her own contemporary investigation into Ware’s history with animation, music and historical reenactments in which Ware is portrayed by actor Fred Whitfield. The film premiered at the Calgary International Film Festival on September 24, 2020, and was subsequently screened at the 2020 Vancouver International Film Festival.

COVID-19 not stopping the honouring of war heroes Covid 19 was not allowed to prevent us from honouring our Indigenous and Metis War heroes and their families on November 8th here in Grande Prairie Alberta. While we were restricted to 15 people, with our ceremony being live streamed by CIA Solutions with multiple cameras to our Facebook Live Stream we,the Canadian Motorcycle Tourism Association were able to have over 700 people engage in the services in real time. We had our first three mini documentaries (Our partner was CIA Solutions to create these mini docs) from the “Soldiers of the Drum” series played to the audience on Facebook while we were getting ready for the in person portion of the event, then we cut into the live ceremony. The music, the speeches, the wreath laying. The RCMP, City of Grande Prairie, County of Grande Prairie, ANAVET Unit 389, Canadian Aboriginal Veterans Association and the Grande Prairie Friendship Centre along with the Grande Prairie Pipe & Drum Band and traditional singer Al Crawford participated in the live ceremony. The Cadets and Elder Darlene Cardinal attended by prerecorded video. Because of our sponsor, Seven Generations Energy and the team from CIA Solutions we have had the most incredible feedback! So

many people have been reached by the mini documentaries and the ceremony, over 2,300 people have watched them! One such bit of feedback was on our documentary on Lance Sgt Joseph St Germaine of Dixonville. This from Chris Fitzpatrick: “My grandfather was in Joseph’s platoon, and he would speak about him frequently with great admiration and respect. He told us that he would not have made it through Italy without Joseph, who saved him from a German sniper in Ortona. In 2008 I had the honour of visiting his grave to give my thanks. Thank you L. Sgt. St Germain, you are not forgotten.” At the going down of the sun, we will remember them. Federal, provincial and territorial ag ministers hope to reach an agreement on AgriStability. The 2020 Federal-Provincial-Territorial Ministers of Agriculture meetings are scheduled to take place virtually on Nov. 20 and 27, according to a Nov. 3 tweet from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC). The ministers will discuss improvements to

business risk management programs, namely AgriStability – an issue many ag groups are eager to have addressed. The meeting was originally slated to take place in Guelph in July, and was initially postponed to Oct. 14-16.
