National Film Board short showcases area Nettie Wild is one of Canada’s leading documentary filmmakers. She said it was the people that were the genesis of Round-Up = a new National Film Board short film. Nettie Wild (KONELINE: Our Land Beautiful) has experienced the roundup several times and in 2019 returned to the Peace to capture the event on video. “The people -the Mattsons – brought me into he fold several years ago for the Sunset Prairie Round up. It is an extraordinary horse and cattle performance and production getting 4,000 head of cattle moving – it was a visceral experience being along for the ride that first year,” she says. Her work now results indeed in a visceral film - a cinematic contemplation of cows, humans, landscape and architecture. Roundup is produced by Nicholas Klassen at the NFB’s Digital Studio in Vancouver. She says the film crystallized with the hero shot –a drone shot of the round up from above. “It captures the energy all of those involved – the animals, the people –so much energy moving at once. Still from a drone – magnificent shot.” Wild’s ability to explore new ways of real life storytelling has kept her in the forefront of documentary cinema in both form and content. She works on the projects Go Fish, and Uninterrupted as well. To check out the film – see https://youtu. be/vs19d78Cn5A editor@dcdn.ca

Potatoes are also living, breathing things that just happen to be delicious mashed, baked and fried. A little love goes a long way to keep potatoes in their prime while in storage. Your potatoes prefer a cool climate and successful storage of potatoes comes down to slowing their metabolism.

CHARLES FORNEY

Potatoes stored at the recommended 4 degrees Celsius that are destined for the fryer require some preplanning for maximum enjoyment.

Apples are living, breathing things. Once picked, they need special treatment to stay crisp and sweet. Apples prefer a cool climate: proper storage of apples slows down their metabolism, so they keep their f lavour and texture for longer periods of time. Apples can be successfully stored up to eight months.

Apples prefer a little moisture: A little humidity keeps them crisp and sweet because they are 85 per cent water.

Researcher

Potatoes in cool storage develop Tip! sugars that are not suitable for frying. These sugars cause burnt-looking fries—not so appealing! Bring potatoes out of cool storage two weeks before frying as a solution.

Did you know that Honeycrisp apples are special? While exceptionally crisp, these apples have a thin and delicate skin and they need a little coddling to keep them at their best.

Not all potatoes are equal when it comes to storage Gardeners can make the most of their potato crop by choosing to grow certain potato varieties that can be stored for long periods and still taste great when eaten months after being harvested.

Tip! Chieftain potato varieties because Plant Kennebec, Yukon Gold and

they store well.

Greening warning Potatoes are actually stems that are grown underground. That’s why they turn green when exposed to light. Light also causes glycoalkaloids in potatoes, which make them toxic to humans.

Scissors are your friend when Tip! it comes to Honeycrisps. Removing stems prior to storage ensures that the apples don’t puncture each other.

Tip! If your potatoes are turning green, Find a dark spot to store potatoes.

Perfection vs. progress, prove vs. improve Perfection or Progress? If you had to pick one of these, which one do you think is probably the most beneficial to focus on? Prove or Improve? Which of these would likely be most valuable? Which two of these four words might slow you down or possibly keep you from even beginning a task, competition or learning something new? Which two words might be more fun and seem less difficult or daunting? Which two would be easier to accomplish or more achievable? Which two words could you do or be every day? What does it look like or feel like when we or someone else is trying to prove compared to when we or they are trying to improve? Which person would you rather be around Mr. or Mrs. Perfect or Mr. or Mrs. Progressive. Who is more fun? I believe that when we try to be perfect it’s actually unachievable and puts unrealistic goals for us and our horse. I don’t think it feels good to try to be perfect. Being progressive feels much more achievable with way less stress. Doing something for the purpose of improving rather than proving feels much more relaxing. As we gain knowledge and skills what we might have referred to as perfect in the beginning will absolutely change as our awareness grows. We could spend an unreasonable

amount of time trying to achieve perfection just to find out what we thought was perfection was actually the opposite of what we should have done. For example, we might put great value at getting our horse to backup really fast and he achieves this but his nose is sticking out. What would be more important and valuable is softness. Another example might be putting great value on getting our horse to circle at a canter and he does, but he’s pulling on the rope and looking outside the circle. Again, softness would be much more valuable. Not pulling on the rope and looking in, arched towards the handler would be better. Having a responsive backup and a horse that will circle at the canter are both valuable things to have but our idea of what that should look like can vary greatly. So “perfect”, if there is such a thing ,is very different depending our depth of knowledge and understanding. Anytime I enter into a competition or fly to another country to teach I remind myself that I’m there to improve and be progressive. The horses I handle and the people I teach can feel the difference. I know for myself it makes the event a completely different experience. If I enter a competition with the plan to improve and I win that’s just an added bonus, but I want to put value on the thing that I believe is most important and that is

to improve. If I go somewhere to learn something and I stick to improving rather than ever falling into the trap of trying to prove I will get much more from that learning opportunity. What can a proving way of thinking look like or how might it be disguised? An example of this might be when we won’t enter into a learning opportunity because we are worried about being in front of other people. We don’t want to look stupid, incompetent or be embarrassed in some way. Why? We really can’t be any of those things unless we are trying to prove - prove something that we are not. Being perfectly ok with where we are with our skills and knowledge. Wanting to find out what we don’t know. It doesn’t matter how many people are watching or hear about it. That is generally a person very comfortable with progress and improving. Many years ago I was PERFECT at saying no to things that I wasn’t good at. If it made me uncomfortable, if I hadn’t done that exact thing before, if I was worried about what someone might say. Every time I said no and avoided an opportunity I completely stopped progress and a chance to improve. Now when I say yes to things that make me feel the

same way I’m excited to see how much I can improve. I have to prepare for the event, learn more at the event and then look back at what I did and didn’t do and learn more again after the event. Much to be gained and much to be lost depending on what we choose. Over the years I developed this way of thinking (I’m not exactly sure where it came from) and it has really made a huge difference in what I’ve done and my perspective on opportunities that have come along. I hope you might be able to use or benefit from a thought or two and apply it to your next opportunity. Glenn Stewart Glenn is currently accepting application for his Front Row Seating Program. This is a rare and unique opportunity to observe and learn directly from Glenn Stewart on his Personal Horsemanship Journey as he prepares his Dream Team of Horses and works with other horses all at different levels of development. www.thehorseranch.com.

November is a High Risk time for Impaction Colic in our Horses By Dr. Christa Harder Each November we seem to see a higher caseload of colicing horses come through our doors than compared to other times of the year. One speculation is the dramatic swings in temperature/weather at this time that can cause some of our horses to colic. Colic is one of our most common equine emergencies. It is a fairly broad term that refers to abdominal pain caused by an abnormal condition affecting the stomach, cecum or intestines. Though there are many different types of colic, impaction colics seems to be one of the more common types this time of the year. Impaction colic refers to blockage (complete or partial) of the stomach, cecum or intestine such that feed taken into the mouth cannot pass through the gastrointestinal tract and exit at the rectum. Signs of colic can include not wanting to eat, restlessness, pawing, kicking/looking at their belly, pacing, sweating, lying down frequently and rolling and abdominal bloat. If your horse is showing any of these signs, a call to your veterinarian is recommended since all of these signs may mean a mild colic or a potentially life threatening colic. We usually start our exam by taking a history. Commonly asked questions include: when was the horse last de-wormed, what type of feed is they were on, has there been a feed or environmental change recently, is fresh water available and have they coliced before. Following a history, a thorough exam is performed where parameters like heart rate and gut sounds are assessed. A rectal exam allows us to assess the location of the small and large intestine, and check for impaction or enlargement/distension of the bowel. A nasogastric tube may be passed through the nose to the stomach. Because a horse cannot vomit, passing this nasogastric tube allows any built up fluid (reflux) to be taken off the stomach.

If there is no net reflux then fluid can be administered through the nasogastric tube. Blood work and an abdominal fluid tap may also give us more information on the severity of the colic and prognosis for the horse. When an impaction is diagnosed, a variety of therapies can be used. Frequent nasogastric tubing with a balanced electrolyte solution is critical for hydrating the impaction and allowing it to pass. We may also choose to put the horse on intravenous fluids to help correct dehydration and maintain hydration. In addition anti-inflammatories are routinely given to reduce the horse’s pain. Most impactions can be treated with medical therapy, as described above, but severe cases may require surgery. Impaction colic can be caused by a number of different. These include stress, dehydration, a feed change or inappropriate feed (i.e. straw), parasite overload, intestinal motility disorder and dental disease. Horse owners can help prevent impaction colic through a variety of management strategies. Providing an abundant, readily available source of fresh water at all time, that is heated in the winter, helps prevent dehydration. In addition, some horses do not like to drink in the winter when it gets really cold. They eat lots of hay because this is how they stay warm, but do not drink very much. This is the perfect scenario for developing an impaction colic. Feeding some loose salt in grain or providing free choice access to loose salt can make your horse thirsty and encourage him to drink more in cold weather. Feeding good quality hay and making feed changes gradually also reduce the risk of impaction colic. Make sure your horse’s teeth have been checked before going into winter especially older horses with potential dental problems. Horses that have more difficulty processing hay with their teeth are at a dramatically higher risk for developing an impaction colic in the winter. Additionally discuss a

deworming program specific to your horse with your veterinarian to minimize risk of a parasite related colic. We wish you a safe a colic free November but if you have any questions about colic or horse health care contact us at the Dawson Creek Veterinary Clinic.

Co-op opens new fertilizer terminal in AB

BYOB

with independent nutrition consultant BARRY YAREMCIO

Standing above the surrounding fields in southern Alberta, a new Co-op Fertilizer Terminal provides key infrastructure to support the needs of Western-Canadian farmers.

THIN COWS

(www.beefconsultant.com, November 18, 2020) Thin cows require a higher energy ration to improve body condition before winter sets in. A cow that has a condition score of two, (200 pounds lighter than optimal) doesn’t have the fat cover that is needed for insulation and they can’t tolerate the colder temperatures. More feed will be needed for a thin animal to keep warm compared to a cow in good shape. One researcher estimated an additional 1,400 pounds of hay is needed over the winter just to keep the animal warm. If hay is valued at six cents a pound, that is an additional cost of $84.

Federated Co-operatives Limited (FCL) invested $42.8 million in a new state-of-theart terminal near Grassy Lake, Alta. The terminal warehouses, blends and distributes a full suite of crop nutrition products including liquid micronutrients and nitrogen stabilizers.

If there are thin cows in the herd, wean the calves now. The nutritional requirements of a dry cow is25% lower than that of a lactating beef cow. If placed on a good quality pasture, weight gain is possible. Supplementing 3 to 4 pounds of grain every second day will also help.

“We made this investment understanding the important role the fertilizer terminal will play in serving local co-ops and helping them meet the needs of their members and customers,” said Ron Healey, FCL’s VicePresident of Ag and Consumer Business.

Split the thin animals from the herd and into a different pen or paddock and feed them grain along with a good quality hay. Older cows, timid cows, and the first calf heifers often can’t compete in a large group and are forced to eat the lower quality feeds that remain after the main herd has moved away from the feeding area. If an extra pen is not available, move the thin animals in with the growing replacement heifers. Thin cows are prone to have more calving problems compared to cows in good condition. The number of difficult calvings may increase because the cow does not have the muscle strength needed to deliver the calf. With limited feed intake right after calving energy intake is usually limited. To make up the energy deficiency, fat is mobilized off the back of the cow. Thin cows can’t mobilize fat, resulting in decreased milk production that in turn negatively impacts calf growth rate.

“Having a fertilizer terminal in Alberta improves Co-op’s ability to efficiently and effectively deliver crop nutrition products to local farmers in a timely matter, which is critical during the growing season.”

It is difficult to have a cow gain weight after calving because of the high nutritional requirement. Thin cows take longer to cycle and may not be ready for the bull when they are turned out. First service conception rates with thin cows is lower than that of cows that are in good condition. Give me a call at 403-741-6032 for additional information.

The new fertilizer terminal in Grassy Lake has a storage capacity of 34,400 metric tonnes. The three Co-op Fertilizer Terminals – facilities in Hanley, Sask., and Brandon, Man., were opened in 2017 – have a combined storage capacity of 106,900 metric tonnes. R0011842930

The Co-operative Retailing System, which includes FCL and more than 160 independent local co-operatives across Western Canada, is unique in its ability to provide producers with everything they need – including fuel, animal feed, crop inputs, grain handling equipment and more — in a single stop.

While all three terminals have rail access, the Grassy Lake location was built with a loop track that can accommodate up to 110 railcars. This is an

essential feature that allows Co-op to receive product from domestic and international suppliers, which is particularly important as domestic production of phosphate ended last year. Fast facts Construction of the facility was announced in February 2019 and was completed in June 2020, when it began receiving product. The terminal currently has five full-time employees. Co-op terminals can load a super B trailer in six minutes and dispense up to 400 metric tonnes of straight fertilizer in an hour. The terminal offers warehouse storage for liquid micronutrients and nitrogen stabilizers, this ensures farmers have access to the latest in fertilizer technology Seven product bays allow for an enhanced product offering and additional custom-blending capabilities. More than 146 Coop Agro Centres across Western Canada – including 35 in Alberta – currently provide agricultural producers with important crop supplies, including crop protection products and seed. “Fertilizer is part of a comprehensive offering of products and services that we’re able to deliver to our farm customers across southern Alberta,” said Paul Haynes, CEO of South Country Co-op. “By working with FCL and other local Co-ops like ours, this new terminal helps us to remain competitive, provide timely deliveries and be trusted partners and advisors, working together to support the success of our customers’ operations.” Nearly 700 jobs directly supported the construction of the terminal with 104 people on site during the height of construction in April 2020. There were no lost-time injuries throughout the construction phase.

A Rural Senior Initiative The Dawson Creek Society for Community Living is partnering with the Peace River Regional District to provide services to seniors still residing in their own homes. This project will provide support from January 4, 2021 to April 2, 2021 in the following service areas: Rolla-Doe River, Tate Creek-Tomslake , Farmington-Tower Lake, Devereaux-Upper Cut Bank, and the Progress-Groundbirch-East Pine-Sunset Prairie area. The Rural Senior Initiative will service up to 50 homes this winter in an effort to help seniors remain in their homes longer. This program is made up of three service initiatives: 1. Five homemade, healthy, and freshly frozen meals will be available for pickup weekly by each participant. At that time, participants will also have the option to participate in a social function. COVID-19 precautions will be in place. 2. A bi-weekly housekeeping service. Two pre-approved contractors will provide two hours of cleaning during each visit. 3. Snow removal are available to each home participating in the program and will be completed by approved contractors. More information will be available closer to the start date of the Rural Senior Initiative. Watch for a poster to be included in The Mirror and Northern Horizon newspapers.

Fertilizer makes up approximately one-third of input costs for many crops, and it is usually the largest single component to cereal and oilseed crops. ‘Over the past 4 to 6 months, crop prices for Alberta farmers have been strengthening due to strong global sales demand,’ explains Ryan Furtas, market analyst with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. ‘Meanwhile, corresponding fertilizer prices have been slow to respond, remaining relatively well supplied and low cost.’ One way to analyze fertilizer value is to directly compare the cost of a fertilizer product with current crop prices. Furtas says that a commonly used fertilizer ratio will show the number of tonnes of wheat or canola required to purchase a tonne of urea fertilizer. ‘In this instance, a lower ratio is favourable to producers and means less crop volume is required to purchase a given amount of fertilizer.’ Urea ‘The 5-year comparison shows recent urea versus canola and wheat prices are having a strong downward trend, which is the result of higher crop prices and relatively low fertilizer prices,’ he says. ‘The current canola ratio shows that selling one tonne of canola at current prices will pay for a single tonne of urea. The current ratio is 10% lower than the 5-year average. Approximately two-thirds of the decrease is attributed to a higher canola prices and one-third due to the lower urea price.’ The current wheat ratio shows that it takes approximately 2 tonnes of wheat to pay for a

single tonne of urea. Furtas adds that historically speaking, 2 tonnes is a financially beneficial ratio for producers. ‘Comparing the milling wheat ratio to the 5-year average shows a decrease of just over 6%. The strengthening price of wheat and the urea price decrease are almost equally responsible for the ratio declining just over 6% when compared to 5-year average.’ Over the next few months, he says that fertilizer inputs could rise or grain prices could drop. ‘Producers not locking in either side of the ratio are sort of speculating that either fertilizer prices will go lower and grain will go higher. Based on the past 5-year trends in grain and fertilizer prices, the ratios show that is unlikely to occur. Both sides - grain and fertilizer - appear solidly priced.’ It is possible that urea prices will experience at least some small appreciation in price going into the winter months. ‘Even though planting season is months away, North American urea is currently priced below global urea prices,’ he notes. ‘Many factors have changed in the past 5 years. Expanded fertilizer production and lower energy prices have been key in recent years, but those factors can shift and fertilizer prices may soon follow.’ ‘Considering the combination of strong grain prices and relatively low fertilizer prices, securing a portion of urea tonnage at this time would be considered prudent risk management on the input side of the scale for Alberta producers,’ he adds.

Alberta Agriculture and Forestry has several publications that may be a perfect fit for the gardener on your list. Weed Seedling Guide ($10 plus GST) Agdex 640-9 – the second edition of this convenient, pocket-size book helps producers and others correctly identify weed seedlings. This coil-bound publication features information on 62 broadleaved weeds and 10 grasses. The weeds are organized by cotyledon (seed-leaf) shape to make identification easier, and the book has seed-leaf shape drawings and full-colour weed seedling images, a table of commonly confused weeds and a glossary of terms. Alberta Yards and Gardens ($15 plus GST) Agdex 200/32-1 – gives a fresh, unbiased look at what grows best in Alberta. The book is packed with information about selecting ornamental trees and shrubs, lawns, small fruits and berries, flowers, vegetables, herbs and even water plants. Homeowners, hobby gardeners, serious horticulturists and landscape artists will find this book invaluable. It also gives tips and techniques for pruning, wintering roses, container gardening and attracting birds and butterflies. Growing Native Plants of Western Canada ($30.00 plus GST) Agdex 580-2 – with over 100 pages of text and photographs, this book takes an in-depth look at 48 species of native plants that have shown promise for ecological repair. This book will help anyone interested in collecting, growing and commercially producing native plants. Users might include private and public land managers, land reclamation engineers, conservation and

reclamation consultants, range ecologists, wildlife and habitat biologists, seed producers, nursery operators, landscapers and gardeners. Pruning in Alberta ($3 plus GST) 270/24-1 – this great stocking-stuffer takes the mystery out of pruning. This book shows how to control and maintain trees and shrubs without distorting their natural form and beauty. Also included are tips for increasing fruit harvest and improving flowering. Weeds of the Prairies ($25 plus GST) Agdex 640-4 – full colour photos and illustrations detailing 112 weeds make this the most complete work of its kind on the Canadian Prairies. Weeds are colour-coded by flower colour for easy reference, and the full index makes it easy to find the species by common, scientific or family name. Charts on life cycle and habitat provide valuable information, and maps show how widespread particular weeds are. This 266 page book will make planning a weed control program easier and more effective. It can also help youngsters learn how to identify weeds. Find a full list on Alberta Agriculture and Forestry’s Publications webpage. Any of these books, DVDs and CD-ROMs can be ordered online or by calling the Publications Office at 780-427-0391. 34 The Northern Horizon, November 27, 2020

Minister of Agriculture responses to the Wheat and Barley Core Breeding agreements Canada’s Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, today released the following statement in response

to the recently signed Barley and Wheat Core Breeding Agreements: “Wheat and barley are important crops for many

Canadian farmers, and have generated, on average, $7.1 billion annually in cash receipts over the past five years. “The Government of Canada has long supported these two important sectors through scientific contributions and joint investments, and has succeeded in developing AAC Brandon wheat and AAC Connect barley, which help Canada remain a world leader in grain production. “The recently signed Core Breeding Agreements between Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and the Canadian Wheat Research Coalition and the Canadian Barley Research Coalition represent a continued commitment to work together. The joint investment, over the next five years, will ensure that Canadian farmers benefit from the best field ready wheat and barley varieties and genetics possible. “Breeding programs require long-term vision to operate

effectively. These investments in wheat and barley will continue to support Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s world-class breeding programs. “The Government of Canada further supports the field crops sector through investments in the barley and wheat science clusters. Funding of $6.3 million and $13.9 million respectively were announced in 2019 to help keep the sector on the cutting edge. Additional support is also provided through a new state-of-the-art Barley Research Building in Brandon and the refurbishment of the Swift Current Research and Development Centre. These are but a few examples of the many ways we are supporting crop research and development in Canada. “Together, these investments will help our farmers continue growing top quality products sustainably, while meeting consumer demands at home and abroad for years to come.”

ON THE

OPEN ROAD R0011490554

Motorcyclists, viruses in general and risk levels Around the world we watch in horror as governments lock their citizens down and remove their right to purchase items that the government deems non essential. That bra or those shoes might not be essential to you but tell that to the 12 year old out growing everything they own. They remove the right to mourn, to celebrate, to exercise our minds, bodies and souls (read no church, no gym, no “other thoughts” or “free speech”) I have watched in abject despair as friend after friend is put in facebook jail for daring to have an opinion or heaven forbid they share an opinion. I now have friends who are being censored and censured for daring to have shared an opinion 8 months ago, 2 years ago and on and on. My own company was defunded by Google for using the word WAR to describe the Afghanistan War Monument the Canadian Motorcycle Tourism Association has built. It has come to a point where the landscape in front of us is shifting so quickly that it’s hard to know what or who to believe. Many people are confused, overwhelmed and have Coronavirus fatigue. Around the world it appears that governments are taking

advantage of this Covid-19 virus to reset economies and pit neighbour against neighbour. Our own Canadian Prime Minister talks about the opportunity to reset Canada and has gotten the Bank of Canada involved .(https:// www.bankofcanada.ca/wpcontent/uploads/2020/08/ presentation-2020-08-20.pdf). Here in Canada, in the province of Manitoba, their Premier has introduced draconian measures disallowing the sale of what politicians deem “nonessential” items. They are literally forcing businesses to ENFORCE their mask mandate under threat of $5,000 fines. They recently sent 3 public health officers and two police officers to the home of a pastor, Tobias Tissen, in Steinbach Manitoba and gave him two fines for $1296 each for breaching the emergency public health law. One was for attending a protest and one was for going to church. So what does all of the “guidance” from governments and all the fear mongering on TV that we are witnessing have to do with motorcycling? As a motorcyclist you have an idea on what is acceptable to you regarding risk level. You may or may not wear a helmet, boots or a jacket when you ride. Why? You may feel that the feeling

of the wind playing across your skin is worth the risk of not having any skin if you go down. You may feel totally comfortable riding in flip flops and the potential risk of losing your foot to gangrene etc. You might feel that you’d rather have your neck broken than end up in the hospital as Mr. or Mrs. Potato Head with zero quality of life therefore a helmet isn’t for you. You might enjoy the hazards and adrenaline of riding in the city with texters all around you or you might prefer the relative calm of riding in the open country with the odd deer or moose to dart out and make life interesting. There are adventure riders who ride off road, off grid with only their wits to survive by. There are others who have to have every gadget under the sun for protection. For the most part, motorcyclists tend to be the kind of people who Live and Let Live. To most of us, that’s not a cliche. We as citizens get to choose the risk level we are comfortable with but in doing so we have to respect the rights and fears of others. Motorcyclists TEND as a collective to understand this concept. We are never going to stop

this virus, anymore than we can stop any other virus. Viruses are a fact of life and have been with us since the beginning of time. Physical distancing and wearing masks didn’t work in 1918. We don’t know what will end our lives, none of us do. It could be a heart attack, cancer, a car crash, a slip and fall, diabetes, drowning, skiing or a whole host of other things. Unless you choose suicide, you don’t know what will send you over the rainbow bridge. Think about this: Pre COVID-19 did you live in abject fear everyday or did you go to bed thinking about all you would accomplish the next day? Life was not meant to be lived in bubble wrap. We can protect ourselves by washing our hands, taking an appropriate regimen of vitamins and minerals (most people who contract Covid-19 have a vitamin D deficiency), staying physically active and as healthy as possible and tuning out on the mainstream media. The hype is overwhelming and causing unreal fear in people. Be smart, be safe, WASH YOUR HANDS AND BE KIND. Belt Drive Betty
