Get the most from a co-packing relationship Registration is now open for “Best Practices for Working with a Co-Packer”, which is taking place January 13, 2021 from 9 to 10:30am. In this webinar, participants will hear from a copacker and an industry panel comprised of speakers who have worked with a co-packer to produce agricultural and food products. The panel will provide perspectives from both sides of the co-packing relationship. Company speakers will discuss what steps they took to be ready. The co-packer will share what is required from a company. All speakers will share some of the challenges and tips for how to get the most from the relationship and work towards a successful outcome.
Following the industry panel presentation and questions, participants will have an opportunity to participate in a break-out session on copacking in Alberta. This session will further explore emerging trends and sharing of best practices and tips that enable companies to expand sales through co-packing. Register for the Best Practices for Working with a Co-Packer webinar. Growing demand for snack food COVID-19 brought radical changes to consumers’ everyday lives and many of the newly adopted behaviours may be here to stay,’ explains Jeewani Fernando, provincial consumer market analyst with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. ‘Many value-added food products, including snack food, have emerged as a response to these changing consumer demands.’ She says snack foods are well-positioned as value-added products with potential to address many of the changing consumer needs and wants. But she says businesses must be increasingly customer-oriented if they want to stay competitive and grow in this area. ‘The value-added food sector offers opportunities for Alberta agri-food processors to innovate and develop new products to meet emerging consumer trends such as more healthy food options with flavour, transparency and safety, sustainability and convenience food options such as meal kits and takeaway food.’ Snack food manufacturing sales, import data and retail sales data provide evidence there is high consumer demand for snack foods. Alberta grocery sales data shows that snack food sales totalled around $750 million in 2018 resulting in about a 4% increase over 2017. Alberta grocery sales data and made-in-Alberta/local food sales data for the snack food category are useful tools to show how each sub-category performs in sales and what percentage of Alberta made/ local represents each sub-category. ‘The bottom line,’ says Fernando, ‘is that emerging consumer demand and sales trend data for the snack food sub-categories suggests considerable value-added potential in the snack food sector for Alberta agri-food producers and processors.’

Northern Lights College agriculture labour marker study underway, consultant selected Victoria-based firm R.A. Malatest & Associates are the successful proponent in a request for proposals issued by Northern Lights College and has started research for an agriculture industry labour market study funded by the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction. The study, titled “State of the Agriculture Labour Trends and Needs in Northeast British Columbia, is developing a broader picture of the issues and challenges facing the agriculture industry in Northeast BC. Under the guidance of the advisory committee, the firm started primary research through interviews with Indigenous and non-Indigenous stakeholders. Among those interviewed included the beef cattle industry, grain producers, specialty crops, and
those in supporting roles in agriculture. At the same time, the firm looked at data from StatsCan and BC Stats to develop a labour market profile for the region, as well as a literature review and four brief background research papers. Malatest presented a progress report to the advisory committee on Dec. 11, 2020. The next steps in the study will see agricultural business owners and employers in the region surveyed and more data collected. The agriculture study will conclude in June 2021 and a report will be produced outlining a labour market strategy to address current and projected labour market needs in Northeast BC. It will make recommendations to help new talent develop world-class skills and encourage the industry to further embrace a culture of innovation.

Year-to-date, western Canada slaughter is 281,636 head, 25% below 2019 and 12.6% lower than the 5-year average,’ says Jason Wood, provincial livestock market analyst with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. ‘Nationally, cow slaughter is 380,775 head to the week ending December 5, down 20% from 2019 and 5.4% below the 5-year average. Good pasture and forage conditions have been beneficial, allowing time to market cows and preventing additional downward price pressure.’ Wood notes total exports of Canadian live cattle to the U.S. are 611,535 head to the week ending November 28, 2020, down 9.2% from 2019 and 8.9% lower than the 5-year average. Feeder cattle exports are 110,686 head this year, down
39% from 2019. Fed (slaughter) steers and heifers, including cow exports, are currently at 452,359 head, up 3.4% from 2019. ‘Higher exports of fed cattle and cows have provided market support this year,’ explains Wood. Wood adds frozen cow meat exports are allowed under Phase 1 of the U.S.-China trade deal. Recent reports indicate that more U.S. frozen cow cuts are being exported to China. ‘This may provide additional support to the cow market as we move into 2021, both in the U.S. and here. ‘Finally,’ says Wood, ‘as we move into the first quarter of 2021 and closer to spring, increased demand for lean ground beef typically supports a seasonal increase in cow prices.’

Fertilizer consumption trends
BYOB
Grain farmers recognize that significant amounts of nutrients are removed from the field each year by the growing crop,’ says Ryan Furtas, market analyst with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. ‘Modern day agriculture relies heavily on commercial fertilizer to replenish the soil’s nutrients.’ Furtas says over the past 10 years, the use of nitrogen, phosphate and potash by western Canadian farmers has increased, with a few exceptions. ‘Nitrogen has by far the highest volume growth in western Canada, going from 1,661,000 metric tonnes (mt) in 2010/11 to 2,279,000 mt in 2019/20. The average growth rate for nitrogen in Western Canada has increased by nearly 4% on an annual basis for the past 10 years, amounting to 618,000 mt of additional use up to 2019/20.’ Western Canadian phosphate consumption has increased by 378,000 mt going from 541,000 mt in 2010/11 to 919,000 mt in 2019/20. This amounts to an annual growth rate of 6% over the past 10 years. ‘Potash is the least used of the three primary nutrients in western Canada with 129,000 mt applied in 2010/11 increasing to 227,000 mt in 2019/20. Western Canadian potash use has increased by nearly 7% on an annual basis for the past 10 years.’ Image 1. Western Canadian fertilizer consumption of nitrogen, phosphate and potash (000’s of metric tonnes)
with independent nutrion consultant BARRY YAREMCIO
CATTLE NUTRITION MANAGEMENT To provide a balanced raon, it is necessary to take representave samples of forages, silages, and grains. A water sample is also helpful in some situaons. When the results are obtained from a laboratory, raons are designed to meet the needs of each type of animal for the stage of producon they are in.
Furtas says Western Canada is overwhelmingly the biggest user of nitrogen products at 85% of total use in Canada. Phosphate use is a similar story with western Canadian farmers responsible for 78% of Canadian volume. Potash use in western and eastern Canadian is approximately equal with eastern Canada using slightly more, on average, over the past 10 years. ‘When it comes to fertilizer consumption for agricultural purposes, both western and eastern markets have experienced growth in consumption,’ says Furtas. ‘Taking into consideration the amount of arable land, it’s no surprise that fertilizer use in Western Canada is much larger than in Eastern Canada.’
The test results are entered into the ©CowBytes program and raons are balanced. One of the consideraons taken during this process is to use available feeds in an efficient and cost-effecve manner. Supplying older or lower quality feeds to cows in mid- to late pregnancy when nutrient requirements are lower and using higher quality feeds for calves and lactang cows reduces overall winter feed costs but sll meets animal requirements. Managing feed inventories when developing the overall winter feeding package is crical to prevent the need to purchase addional feed later in the feeding period.

It is possible that a custom mineral may be required to meet mineral, trace mineral, vitamin, and ionophore requirements if used. The resulng formulaon could be in the form of a mineral, premixed, or pelleted supplement. It all depends on what is required and what product is best suited for the feeding pracces on the farm. The custom product is tendered out to feed companies to obtain a compeve price.
Furtas adds growth in fertilizer use in western Canada is increasing at a much higher rate than in eastern Canada. ‘Growth in fertilizer use could be tied to a few different factors, among the most influential are crop prices and yields of the upcoming or previous crop years. Also contributing to increases in fertilizer use is the growth in field crop area in Canada, largely driven by gains in the Prairie Provinces.’ Contact For more information, connect with Ryan Furtas: Hours: 8:15 am to 4:30 pm (open Monday to Friday, closed statutory holidays) Phone: 780-422-7095

a horse’s hooves, by gently lifting their paws back one at a time. Clipping only a few nails each day spreads out the process to avoid overwhelming your dog. • Often, front nails grow longer than hind ones and need trimming more often- in this case, scratch boards are an alternative to trimming front nails by hand in treat- motivated, trainable dogs. Coarse sandpaper glued to a board can be made at home, and you can redirect your dog’s “shake a paw” trick to have them make contact with the sandpaper surface and drag their foot downwards. Some dogs will also tolerate you filing their nails down manually this way rather than clipping. • If neither of these work, ask a veterinary team or groomer that you trust to trim your dog’s nails for you. You can even request that your veterinary team show you how they do it in person, so you may become more comfortable doing it yourself. Some dogs who are very fearful and not accustomed to nail trims may require this route. Regardless of the route you choose, remember that nail trims are an important part of your dog’s overall health and comfort! -
What if my dog’s nails are already very long? I am afraid to cut them too short and make them bleed! Dogs who have had long nails for a long time will always benefit from the elimination of extra strain on their joints. However, cutting them too short too quickly is a concern. Some basic leads from Make it Beef! It’s great to have chef-y type recipes that inspire you to cook, but sometimes we just crave simple foods to give comfort in our hectic day-to-day. We’ve had requests to get back to the basics with beef and we listen! Here’s a collection of the ‘tried and true’ favourites you’ve been asking for: Mighty Meatloaf: As the weather begins to cool, it’s time to turn on the oven to make the kitchen cozy – and who doesn’t like a good meatloaf? As a ‘handy’ alternative, this one has a Mexican twist so you can slice and serve in taco shells for a fun hand-held dinner. Cabbage Rolls Undone: Bet you’re wondering what to do with the big head of cabbage that’s hanging out in your fridge – after all – there is a limit to the amount of coleslaw you can eat! These ‘unrolled’ cabbage rolls will put it to good use.

Reliable Roast Beef: Canadian Living developed this roast beef classic using Canada Beef’s tried and true best ever roasting method. Developed in the lab and tested by home cooks to finesse it, try this roasting technique once and you’ll never look back. Sustainable Soup: This hearty soup is sure to sustain you – and since it’s designed to use leftovers of stale bread and cooked roast or steak, it helps manage food waste and your precious time. And it’s made with a handy pantry ingredient – tomato juice which offers a hearty serving of vegetables. Slow Cooker Stew: Whether made on the stove-top, in the oven or slow cooker, Julia Child nailed it when she popularized this French classic. Simple ingredients, simple prep and amazing results!

Canadian chicken is now easier to choose than ever There are many reasons why chicken is Canada’s number-one choice for dinner. High in protein, easy to prepare and versatile enough to cater to any taste, fresh Canadian chicken is the perfect choice for a healthy lifestyle—and now it’s even easier to identify thanks to our new logo.
is available in a wide variety of cuts to suit a range of tastes and budgets, with many cuts offering convenience for those busy days when you need a quick healthy meal. We also offer consumers many different types of chicken, including traditionally-raised, organic, and free-range.
What also makes Canadian chicken a healthy choice is that it’s grain-fed, free of added hormones and steroids, and raised right here in Canada according to nationally-set, high food safety and animal care standards.
With so many choices in the grocery store, we want to make it easier for you to understand your options. Ask your grocer to carry the “Raised by a Canadian Farmer” label and be certain that you’re giving your family the highest quality ingredients.

Grain researchers help unlock genetic code for 15 wheat varieties Researchers from the Canadian Grain Commission’s Grain Research Laboratory have helped unlock the genetic code for 15 wheat varieties. This landmark discovery will allow scientists and breeders to quickly identify influential genes and improve the yield, disease resistance, nutritional quality and other desirable traits in wheat crops. The project was a major international effort and was led by Dr. Curtis Pozniak at the University of Saskatchewan. Canadian Grain Commission researcher and microbiology program manager, Dr. Sean Walkowiak, is a primary author of the report on the discovery, Multiple Wheat Genomes Reveal Global Variation in Modern Breeding , published in the journal Nature. Dr. Bin Xiao Fu, manager of the Canadian Grain Commission’s Bread wheat and durum research program, also contributed to the project by comparing the wheat cultivars from global breeding pro-

1105 Obituaries Henry Paul Nagel January 18, 1928 - December 26, 2020 It’s with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Henry Paul Nagel, long-time resident of the Briar Ridge area, at the age of 92. Henry was born at home in the Milk River, Alberta area, the first-born son of Henry and Emma Nagel. He had 3 younger siblings. Henry married the love of his life, Patsy Clearwaters, on August 7, 1952, and they raised four daughters on the farm. Henry was a talented mechanic, heavy equipment operator and inventor of helpful machines. He was always willing to help anyone with anything. Over the years, his mixed farm included Hereford cattle, chickens, pigs, geese, horses and even reindeer later on. In his retirement, Henry found some old tractors and enjoyed restoring them to their original condition, and operating them at sod-turning events at local fairs. His grandchildren remember his quiet toughness and the girls say he was one of the best dance partners they ever had. Henry was pre-deceased by his parents Henry & Emma, his brothers Stanley George and Albert John. He leaves to mourn his beloved wife of 68+ years, Patsy, his daughters, Pauline Lea (Gordon), Sally Barkwell (Grant), Chris Haddow (Randy) and Vikki Ross (Kelly), his 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren, his sister Ruth Hunder and many relatives and friends. In keeping with current Covid-19 restrictions, a service to celebrate Henry’s life will be held at a later date. Donations may be made in Henry’s memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Lung Association, or to a charity of one’s choice. Henry’s family would like to thank his long time physician, Dr. Jim Hargreaves, Jerome Lake, Community Paramedic, the Rapid Nursing Team of Home Care, Bayshore Home Health, Reverend Marilyn Carroll, and the many special friends who have offered support. Very Respectfully, Reynars Funeral Home & Crematorium

Bibeau on Agricultural Exports in 2020 “In an incredible show of strength and resilience, our hardworking farmers and food businesses across Canada are expected to post another record year for agri-food exports, despite all the challenges that COVID-19 has thrown their way. Indications are that Canada is on track to surpass our record last year of $67 billion in agriculture and agri-food exports, and that we are making significant progress towards our Government’s goal of $75 billion by 2025. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, our Government has taken immediate action to keep the supply chain strong. Our prompt actions have paid big dividends. Despite concerns about supply chain disruptions, at the beginning of the pandemic we put in place the necessary safety measures so that essential trade goods could cross our borders. And while there were also
concerns about labour supply, efforts by the federal Government and others to defray the costs of worker quarantine periods helped us welcome around 85 percent of our migrant workforce compared to last year. Right through the pandemic, our international customers turned to Canada more than ever as a trusted, steady supplier of high-quality food to meet their needs. To help our farmers and food businesses take advantage of exciting new market opportunities opening up around the world, our Government has implemented major trade agreements that give Canadian agri-food exporters access to key markets that represent two-thirds of the global economy. Today, about three-quarters of our agri-food trade is covered by one of our trade agreements. While the pandemic has prevented our agri-food exporters from connecting with

international buyers in-market, we have pivoted our programs to support online marketing initiatives. We launched a digital update of our Canada Brand. We also expanded the CanExport program to help businesses with digital marketing initiatives. Launched in 2019, CanExport is providing up to $75,000 to small and medium-sized businesses, including hundreds of small food businesses, for export marketing in international markets where they have little to no sales. Trade diversification is another pillar of our strategy. To expand our customer base and open up new markets for our food products, we are pursuing an aggressive Export Diversification Strategy, backed by investments of over $1.1 billion, to help Canadian businesses explore new export opportunities. That includes a half dozen new agricultural trade commissioners deployed in markets around the world. When our global customers see the Canada Brand, they know they are getting the best-quality goods, grown by farmers who are taking care of their land and animals, and backed by a food safety system that is the envy of the world. We never hesitate to share with our trade partners the sense of pride we feel about Canada’s hard-working producers. Canadian farmers and food businesses play by the rules of international trade, and we continue to support the World Trade Organization in upholding a rules-based trading system and enforcing those rules. Since it was launched in 2018, the “Ottawa Group” has helped Canada lead on the world stage, alongside like-minded nations, to champion a predictable and transparent international trade environment. This is vital to our own COVID-19 recovery, and to global food security. Together, we will continue to help Canadian farmers and food businesses to grow their exports and lead the sustainable relaunch of our economy.” The Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Canada’s Minister of Agriculture and AgriFood

AgriProfit$ crops and forages benchmarks ‘Cost and returns benchmarks provide valuable management information for producers,’ explains Manglai, crops economist with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. ‘These averages are calculated from the individual producer’s data collected for the growing season through the AgriProfit$ program. This helps producers compare their unit costs to real average crop production costs.’ Manglai says this process enables produc-
ers to measure and manage specific areas of their operation with a focus on improved profitability. ‘Managing unit costs of production is one of the most significant strategies producers can employ to ensure profitability and longevity of their business.’ The cost and returns benchmarks for crops and forages are analysed by crop and soil zone. Soil zones include black, brown, dark brown, grey, Peace, irrigated regions and dryland regions. For each crop and soil zone combination,
benchmarks list average costs and returns for the region plus an average of the top performers. ‘The total versus top performers’ comparison is designed to highlight the profit and risk associated with the pursuit of cost reduction, operational improvement or focused management strategies. Benchmarks also contrast costs and returns on owned versus rented land, indicating potential profit opportunities.’
