The BC Peace Region Bee Club is getting its wings this year. The club has been operating since 2017, with a new website launched earlier this month. A meeting is also scheduled for the first week of April, and club coordinator Claude Paradis is encouraging novice and experienced beekeepers to take part.

Janis KMET • Sales Associate (BC Sales) (Office) 250-782-4888 ext 104 • (Cell) 250-219-0369 jkmet@dcdn.ca

While not much can be said for now on the club’s 2021 plans, Paradis says the public is more than welcome to explore its website for resources and support.

“I am very pleased with how much traction it has been getting in such a short time. I have preloaded the website with tons of content and there is much more planned to be put there in the near future,” Paradis said.

Paradis says the club’s aim is to provide educational content and local context to beekeeping. It’s currently seeking volunteers to serve as archivists to add historical articles to its website. “The intention of the site is to establish an online presence,” Paradis said. “Until now, we have been difficult to find and hard to reach.”

Ag in Motion digital event now available on-demand Farmers attending the first Ag in Motion digital event in 2021 on March 24 received tips on many aspects related to the spring planting theme. “Yesterday’s sessions included a wide assortment of topics from seeding varieties and storage, practical tips for setting up your seeder more efficiently, a current markets update, on-farm smart devices, plus a session on autonomous ag,” says Lynda Tityk, Executive Vice-President of Glacier FarmMedia. Tityk notes that farmers who missed the March 24 digital event launch of Planting Kick Off - Profiting Through Incremental Gains can still register and view the sessions to learn about small changes that can improve their bottom line. The Ag in Motion Planting Kick Off highlights included: · Succeeding with Granular Herbicides with Erin Matlock, Field Development with Gowan, sharing weed management strategies

for using granular soil residual herbicides · Seeds for the Prairies features SeedNet member Greg Stamp talking about the agronomic traits of seven seed varieties, including two new varieties available this fall · Western Canadian Markets Discussion with up-to-date information from Phil FranzWarkentin, Mike Jubinville and Bruce Burnett of MarketsFarm · Information sessions hosted by Bayer and METOS® Canada, plus six on-demand sessions on blackleg in canola, maximizing hybrid corn potential, dry bean agronomy, wheat research and more Farmers register once for Ag in Motion’s Digital Pass and get access to themed digital event days in 2021 on topics around planting, growing, research, livestock, harvest and innovation. Presentations and on-demand content will be available until December 31, 2021. Those who register also get first notification

of exclusive on-demand content and popup events when they occur throughout the year. The Ag in Motion Digital Pass also gives farmers exclusive access to special offers and discounts from the event sponsors. On digital event days, farmers, speakers and industry reps can gather in the new virtual Coffee Shop at small virtual tables to catch up through video chat. Many questions about seed varieties, seeding equipment, markets and more were discussed in yesterday’s Coffee Shop video chats and through the sessions’ live chat discussions. With the challenges of getting together in person in 2021, Tityk says that Ag in Motion organizers wanted to give farmers and industry an alternate way to connect online, while bringing timely information to farmers throughout the year when they are making decisions on the farm. To register, and for more information on the 2021 edition of Ag in Motion, visit the website aginmotion.ca.

Technology, innovation to strengthen B.C.’s food security The Province is investing in programs that will apply technology and innovation to agriculture to strengthen B.C.’s food security and support economic recovery. Building on the Food Security Task Force’s recommendations, the new Agritech Concierge will support food producers and agritech innovators, including recipients of the Agritech Grant program, advance their businesses and address the agricultural challenges being faced by the agriculture industry, in B.C. and around the globe. “Supporting our province’s food producers and agritech innovators is part of building a strong economic recovery for everyone,” said Premier John Horgan. “We’re acting on the valued work and recommendations of our Food Security Task Force. By launching these programs now, our province will reap the benefits of access to homegrown, safe, nutritious and affordable food for generations

of British Columbians to come.” The task force was appointed by Premier Horgan in July 2019 to provide strategic advice and recommendations brought forward in a 2020 Food Security Task Force report. The report outlined how technology and innovation can be developed to strengthen B.C.’s agriculture sector and food security. Through a suite of services, the Agritech Concierge will help businesses grow, diversify, access new markets and attract investment opportunities. The concierge will provide personalized service to businesses to attract investment capital, navigate government programs and connect with other levels of government. After a successful intake of the Agritech Grant program, the B.C. government has increased the program’s funding by an additional $4.5 million, for a total investment of $7.5 million. With this new funding,

210416c0

the number of companies eligible for the Agritech Grant increased from a projected 10 companies to 21. The grants will be awarded to the recipients by March 31, 2021. As part of its inaugural work, the Agritech Concierge will support grant recipient companies to scale up, expand and develop technologies to help increase regenerative and sustainable food production in B.C. It will also facilitate pathways for international and out-of-province companies to locate and expand within B.C. The Agritech Grant program is part of StrongerBC: BC’s Economic Recovery Plan. The plan focuses on recovery that is innovative, sustainable and inclusive. It outlines the latest steps the Government of British Columbia is taking to help people, businesses and communities come out of COVID-19 stronger, without leaving people behind.

$176,483 for ten Peace region agricultural projects Northern Development Initiative Trust announced today that $176,483 has been approved to benefit ten Peace Region agricultural projects through the BC Hydro Peace Agricultural Compensation Fund (PACF). This is the fourth time grants have been awarded from the $20 million bi-annual fund, which was established in 2018. Each project must fall into one of three categories: Events and Educational Initiatives, Farming Infrastructure, or Research and Demonstration Initiatives Golden Eagle Enterprises Ltd. – $4,900

for the Miyho Pimatasowin farm diversification project. This initiative is part of an overall objective to build Indigenous youth training in agriculture for the community and Treaty 8 First Nations. The training will be completed over 20 days in 2021 and will include an introduction to Peace Region farming, farm safety, considerations with Indigenous land management among other skills. Jody Watson – $7,407 for the construction of a commercial kitchen to make preserved and pickled products which are

later sold to local retail stores. Currently, the products are being sold in Fort St. John and Hudson’s Hope with inquiries from Dawson Creek and Chetwynd. This investment will improve business practices and allow the team to meet the high demand for their products with an increase in production and introduction of new products. Gary and Kathy Ackles – $22,553 for the production of shrub berries and root vegetables on Sweetwater Farm to sell within 100 kms of the property. While the berries (Saskatoon and Hascap) will take a few years to start producing, the root vegetables will produce a crop this year. The intention is to begin with a 10-to15-acre parcel in 2021 and expand to additional acres over the next two to three years. Eric Hanna – $28,475 for a fence and greenhouse on Hanna Acres. The fence will enclose an existing two-acre field to protect

it from deer and elk and allow the farm to grow additional produce. Making this space usable for vegetables will allow operations to continue and expand while allowing for healthy crop rotation practices. Secondly, the construction of a cold frame freestanding greenhouse will benefit the existing operation by increasing the space available for seedlings and permanent vegetation. Six other projects were approved for funding through the BC Hydro PACF: $8,006 for Suzan Lapp’s riparian and stream protection project, $9,825 for David Braun’s east pasture rebuild, $13,293 for Rustic Market Garden’s high tunnel cold frame construction, $14,024 for Wollen Sons Ranch Ltd. for cattle handling expansion, $18,000 for Beaton Hills Orchard expansion and $50,000 for Summit Acre Farm to relocate a harvester silo. editor@dcdn.ca

Canadian farmers are looking to reduce waste, and plant-based plastics are an increasingly popular alternative as part of a growing Canadian bioeconomy. Creating exciting new options for Canadian farmers, while supporting them in responsibly managing on-farm plastic waste, is helping to build a healthier economy and environment. The Minister of Agriculture and AgriFood, the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, announced funding of more than $4.5 million for five new projects that will improve plastic waste management and on-farm sustainability, and advance bioplastics research. These green agricultural projects will help Canadian farmers remain leaders in sustainable, climatesmart agriculture. The minister made the announcement alongside Cleanfarms, a national nonprofit industry stewardship organization. Cleanfarms will receive up to $1.1 million through the Canadian Agricultural Strategic Priorities Program to develop a strategy to responsibly manage the estimated 60,000 tonnes of plastic waste generated on Canadian farms every year. Their project will increase farmer access to recycling programs and explore ways to deliver long-term, permanent

programs that will help Canadian farmers continue to improve the sustainability of their operations. The other recipients include EcoEnviro Labs Inc., which will receive up to $1 million through Innovative Solutions Canada to advance testing of a new organic bioplastic mulch made from poultry feathers. This could serve as a lower-waste, fully biodegradable and compostable way to produce mulch needed in Canada’s agriculture sector. Titan Clean Energy Projects Corp., which will receive up to $1 million through Innovative Solutions Canada to test a food-grade quality bioplastic, ideal for fruit or prepared vegetable containers, that biodegrades more quickly and will result in less landfill and more sustainable options for grocery stores and shoppers. TerraVerdae Bioworks Inc., which will receive up to $1 million through the Agricultural Clean Technology Program to develop a new generation of biodegradable bioplastic film and injection molded products that target agriculture applications such as mulch film and seed trays. The project intends to displace conventional petroleum-based agricultural plastics.

Many trees are killed or ruined annually from improper pruning. Pruning like any other skill requires knowledge and should be done by a professional certified arborist who can determine what type of pruning is necessary to maintain or improve the health, appearance, and safety of the trees. Topping or removing an excessive amount of live wood is not recommended on any variety of trees and will weaken the tree’s structure. To help keep Alberta Dutch elm disease (DED) free, the Society to Prevent Dutch Elm Disease (STOPDED) encourages everyone to pay attention to the provincial elm pruning ban between April 1 and September 30, 2021. To help eliminate beetle habitat, it is important to properly prune all dead wood out of elms and dispose of all pruned elm wood and elm firewood by burning, burying or chipping by March 31. Stored elm wood can harbour the elm bark beetles that can carry DED. ‘Elm bark beetles are responsible for spreading the deadly DED fungus. They feed on healthy elms and breed in dead and dying elm trees,’ says Janet Feddes-Calpas, STOPDED executive director. ‘If elm trees are pruned during the pruning ban period, beetles that are active at this time can be attracted to the scent of the fresh wound and possibly infect an

Congratulate the recipient of the PCBFA Agricultural Scholarship - Alexa Fraser of Sexsmith! Alexa is pursuing a BSc. in Ecology & Environmental Biology at Thompson Rivers University. “Environmental ecology is the study of relationships in nature, and how we can manage these relationships in order to maintain healthy ecosystems. The agriculture industry itself is an ecosystem that continues to develop and grow as society does. As the industry flourishes, innovations are required to meet a high demand. As demand for the agriculture industry increases, there will be a greater pressure to reduce emissions and control the industry’s contribution to global warming. New ideas and fresh perspectives can provide insight into how to deal with these issues.” Congratulations Alexa, and best of luck in your future studies!

Spring prep for your performance horse By Dr. Christa Harder It is that time of year again when the days are getting longer the weather is getting warmer and with it brings shedding horses, frisky horses (coming in for wound exams or emergency castrations) and the anticipation of competition/clinics/training with our horses. In this article I am going to go through some “spring cleaning” tips on getting your horses back in good shape for summer work, competition, and general maintenance for good health. 1. Dental care – Dental care is important in young horses going into training and to make sure our equine athletes do not have any dental issues that will affect their performance. We recommend getting your horse’s teeth examined and floated, if needed, in spring before the start of the season. 2. Deworming - We typically recommend deworming horses prior to turn out on summer grass to prevent parasites from being shed onto summer grass. However, deworming protocols have changed over the past few years and we now recommend getting a fecal egg count to determine if your horse is a shedder (some horses will typically harbor and shed a lot more parasites than others). 3. Vaccinations – We typically recommend vaccinating horses in spring. Most of us in the Peace Country are likely travelling/competing with our horses during the summer months therefore vaccines in spring will provide the best protection during this high-risk time. 4. Coggins testing – Some equine facilities or crossing the American border require a negative coggins test. A coggins test is valid for 6 months therefore if you know you will be traveling, plan ahead and get your coggins test done early. 5. Hoof care – Regular hoof care yearround cannot be recommended enough. Horse’s hooves don’t grow as fast in the cold winter months, but growth will accelerate now with the spring weather so make sure to have your farrier out to have your horse’s hooves trimmed or shod (which should be regularly performed every 6-8 weeks). 6. Soundness exam – Lameness is one of the biggest reasons we are not able to compete with our horses or compete at the level we hoped. It is always a good idea

to have a thorough veterinary exam at the beginning of the competition/working season to make sure your horse does not have some underlying lameness concern that should be addressed now. If we have a baseline for how your horse is doing we can work with you to create a plan for your horse’s soundness. We use tools such as flexion tests, nerve blocks, radiographs, or ultrasound to diagnose your horse’s lameness and then can treat or maintain them with various joint medications, joint injections, chiropractic adjustments, laser therapy treatment and in some cases work with your farrier to develop a corrective shoeing plan. 7. Reproductive health – Young stallions will start feeling fresh this time of year so make sure to book your castrations in promptly before they are jumping through the fence trying to breed your mare and it becomes an “emergency castration”. Mares will be starting to actively cycling this time of year. If you are planning to breed your mare start tracking your mare’s cycle and contact us early if you are planning to breed your mare at the clinic with fresh or frozen semen. Some performance horse mares also have strong heat cycles that dramatically affects their performance. 8. Check your fences/social order in your horse groups – Horses start feeling energetic and frisky this time of year to run around and play which sometimes results in some nasty wounds. As satisfying it is for us vets to suture up a nasty wound, we don’t want to see your horse out of commission for the summer due to a bad wound from running through a fence. 9. Fitness – Even though our horses are usually outside running around, it is still important to get them into shape well before the start of competition. Start the season with walking and long trotting, progressively increasing in time and distance every week. Trotting up hills will also accelerate their fitness. Making sure your horse is in shape prior to competition will drastically decrease injuries and down time due to injury. We wish you a healthy, safe, and successful competition season with your horses. Please contact us at the clinic for more information on preparation and maintenance of our equine athlete.

Performance horses often require special joint care It’s not uncommon for performance horses to experience inflammation in the joint throughout their lifetime of concussive forces. If left unchecked, inflammatory enzymes can break down fluids in the joints, which leads to a vicious cycle of inflammation, causing pain, stiffness, and damage to the cartilage. Care of your performance horse should include a soundness examination, as well as consideration of supplement's to ensure total joint support. Our clinic often recommends Platinum Performance products. Talk to your veterinarian about soundness, diet and supplementation!

On horse development No force. No fear. Just natural communication and understanding. A good start isn’t something, it’s everything. A language of communication is developed, and the horse learns to trust, understand and accept the rider without force. The horse is handled in such a way that makes sense to him mentally, emotionally and physically, preparing to make the first saddling and riding experiences as positive as possible. Emphasis is placed on reintegrating the horse and owner for a lasting partnership of mutual respect and clear understanding. The broader and stronger the foundation is, the more options available to the owner and more willing and capable of their new partner can be. Glenn rides between 30-60 client horses each year and was awarded the title of Parelli Horse Specialist at the annual Global Instructors conference in Florida, USA. In order to receive this accreditation, the requirement is to have a minimum rating in eleven different areas including Young Horses, Starting Under Saddle, Challenging horses, Foundation Training, Instructing, Horsemanship, Reining and Cow Working. Glenn is also a farrier – having completed the Olds College Farrier Program.

The Horse Ranch is pleased to announce we are extending the Young Horse Development and Foundation Training schedule for our clients from just the winter months to yearround. For dates and locations check our calendar or contact us if you don’t see something in your area – let’s chat and we can look at setting something up. We accept bookings for the following: Foals & Weanlings – Imprinting For horses not yet old enough to start under saddle. A lot can be done with imprinting, ground handling, trailer loading and manners while building the bond between horse and human. Foundation Training This is designed to take a horse from its first rides right up through Stages 1-8 or as high as the client would like to go. Ideal for those who would like more of a foundation put on their horse rather than just the first few rides. Challenging Horses A challenging horse is relevant to the individual handling the horse. To Glenn; a challenging horse has extreme tendencies and difficulty handling situations that otherwise would be basically non-issues to other horses. Let’s start the conversation.

Growing market for dairy milk alternatives ‘Many consumers are foregoing their usual morning coffee runs due to the COVID-19 pandemic,’ explains Stephanie Budynski, coordinating researcher with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. ‘As a result, consumers who are working from home have increased their at-home consumption of both dairy milk and milk alternative products. Recent market research showed the food and beverage product with the greatest sales increase during the pandemic was oat milk.’ Data indicates oat milk experienced a 212% increase in sales in the 31-week period ending October 3, 2020. On the other hand, dairy milk only experienced a sales increase of 9% over the same period. ‘Three major drivers exist in the dairy milk alternative industry that have led to an increase in consumption. These drivers include product availability, diversification of products and the communication of product attributes.’ Consumers may choose to consume dairy milk alternatives for a variety of reasons, including perceived health benefits, desire to try a new product or for allergies or intolerances to lactose, adds Budynski. Consumers may also choose not to consume dairy milk alternatives for various reasons, including product taste, cost or value considerations and to support dairy farmers and agriculture. ‘Nutritional profiles differ across dairy milk and milk alternative products. Understanding these profiles, including calories, protein, sugar and fat, will help consumers choose the product that is right for them,’ explains Budnyski. She adds the market for dairy milk alternatives has been growing and this may provide a unique opportunity for some entrepreneurs. Frozen food sales trends and the pandemic

‘According to available market research, frozen and shelf-stable foods were prominent in shopping carts during the COVID-19 pandemic,’ explains Jeewani Fernando, provincial consumer market analyst with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. ‘Consumers stocked up on these food items which helped to reduce the number of trips

they needed to make to the grocery store.’ While some consumer purchasing habits, such as buying frozen products, may extend beyond the pandemic, other factors may influence frozen food sales in the future. The impact of the pandemic, and therefore the impact on purchasing power, is not equal among consumer groups. ‘Financially impacted consumer groups may adopt new shopping strategies,’ says Fernando. ‘For instance, some may opt for more frozen foods over fresh foods to reduce costs.’ Apart from the pandemic, frozen food is one of the most convenient ways for consumers to find meal solutions, and Fernando points out there is renewed interest in frozen food among Canadian consumers. In recent years, food manufacturers have given the frozen food category a sharper focus by developing a great number of tasty and more nutritionally-rich products. Alberta retail sales data provides information about overall sales trends, different sub-categories of frozen foods and their sales share. ‘For example, Albertamade dinners and entrees represented only 2% of the total Alberta sales indicating there is an opportunity for Alberta processors to innovate and introduce products under this sub-category,’ says Fernando. ‘Similarly, this information can help Alberta food manufacturers identify potential product and market opportunities within the frozen food category.’

COW CONDITION SCORING (www.beefconsultants.com, March 8, 2021) Body condition scoring is a subjective “hands on” method of determining the amount of fat a cow is carrying over the short ribs (loin area), upper spine, hooks and pins and either side of the tail head. A good explanation can be found at http://www.beefresearch.ca/research/body-condition-scoring.cfm Using your thumb, apply pressure to the short ribs on the right side of the animal (when viewing from the rear). By moving your thumb up and down over the ribs, and also between the ribs, an estimated body condition score can be determined. A thin cow will have very little fat over the ribs and they will feel sharp to the touch. There will be a significant depression between the ribs. A cow in good condition has ribs that are not sharp to the touch and there is a slight depression between the ribs. An overfat cow has more fat over the ribs and it will be difficult to feel the ribs even with significant pressure and there will be no depression between the ribs.

VJV in Dawson Creek as it was time for their March Bred Cow, Bred Heifer, Cow/ Calf Pair and Replacement Heifer sale. Auctioneer Yancy Crosier at the mic.

Cow condition should be evaluated two to three months prior to calving. When administering vaccines or when the animals are in the chute, palpate 10% of the herd to get an overall evaluation. Looking at the animals may provide an estimate, but with the long winter hair coat it is difficult to be accurate.

PRZYBYLSKI

WILLOWVIEW AUCTIONS LTD.

Once the condition of the animals is determined, thin animals should be separated out from the main herd and fed separately to improve their condition prior to calving. A higher grain ration is required for animals to gain weight. Placing the thin animals in with the growing replacement heifers or bred heifers is an option if pen space is limited.

The competition itself is focused on several components that the girls will actively use throughout their reign and well into their future careers and life. The contestants each participate in horsemanship, public speaking, modeling, photogenic, personal interviews and they write an exam.

Did you know that the first Miss Teepee Creek Stampede was crowned in 2009? That is right, Teepee Creek started the queen program 12 years ago by Monica Benoit, who was Miss Grande Prairie Stompede 2007 and ran for Miss Rodeo Canada. Monica and everyone working behind the scenes were the start of a wonderful program. The program was originally started for youth 14-17. The program now runs for ages 15-18 which would open the doors to Teepee Creek Stampede having a Queen run for Miss Rodeo Canada. The current Miss Teepee Creek Stampede is Megan Pettyjohn. The Miss Teepee Creek Stampede Committee holds an annual fundraiser, first known as the “Diamond Dinner”, all proceeds from the fundraiser go towards the Miss Teepee Creek Endowment Fund, helping continue on the legacy of Miss Teepee Creek for years to come. As time has progressed, the MTPC Queen Committee started a $500 scholarship for each Queen. This scholarship is still a great part of the Queen Program today, but now it has grown to $1,000. Our hope is to continue this program for years to come as all of our past Queens have utilized their scholarships to attend post secondary school.

AVENGERS OF AGRICULTURE: Learn about Agriculture and Forestry’s export development team Business Link recently hosted the Exporting Agriculture and Agri-Food Products to International Markets webinar with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. This webinar was designed to educate Alberta agribusiness companies of the programs and services offered by the ministry’s export development team. ‘Business Link works with a vast network of entrepreneurs and businesses and by highlighting the work of the ministry, we were able to showcase our collaborative nature and the amazing support systems in place to help clients reach their export goals,’ says Audrey Allotey, team lead, small business strategist with Business Link. The webinar also covered high level agribusiness opportunities and tips for new exporters entering the United States, Mexico and Japan marketplaces. ‘The webinar featuring Alberta Agriculture and Forestry was a great reminder as to the fantastic services they offer agriculture companies,’ says Geovane Beltrao, sales account executive with Canadian Oats Milling Ltd. ‘I have been working with the ministry’s export development team for many years and it is always nice to hear what opportunities are out there for the agriculture sector.’ Watch the webinar: by typing Exporting Agriculture and Agri-Food Products to International Markets in to your browser

PRRD seeking to support aging seniors in rural settings The Peace River Regional District is seeking to support seniors in the Peace. Directors voted in favour of a services bylaw at their March 25 board meeting. The bylaw services function would offer healthy meals, housekeeping, social supports, and yard maintenance. The matter must pass a public referendum before final approval. The referendum will be held on July 17, 2021. A feasibility study was authorized and completed in 2019, at a cost of $100,000, splitting the funds evenly between Area

D and E residents, who the services will be offered to. These areas will be taxed to provide partial funding for the services, to a property tax limit of $1.9 million - or 66 cents per $1,000 for the first year. Area D Director Leonard Hiebert noted requests for proposal would have to be put forward for a contractor to deliver the services, same as the pilot program. “The way the pilot program was set out was that we contracted it – we supplied the money, we had a contractor deliver the

services within that budget,” said Hiebert. The Dawson Creek Society for Community Living handled the pilot program, identifying seniors in need of assistance, preparing and delivering healthy meals to their homes in the rural area. They continue to provide assistance, with an additional $100,000 in funding secured last April through the PRRD. tsummer@ahnfsj.ca

2021 Pea leaf weevil survey ‘Every year a team of surveyors sets out to count, sweep net and soil sample to gather information for insect forecasts and population maps in Alberta,’ says Shelley Barkley, insect survey technologist with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry.

the surveys. Predetermined fields also allows producers to know who is entering their fields.’

‘First up in the survey season is pea leaf weevil. We visit about 250 pea fields from Warner to south of the Peace River looking for and counting the feeding notches of the adult pea leaf weevil.’

Participation in the surveys will help build the 2022 population map. Producers will also receive the results of the fields visited. With approval from producers, information may also be provided to Alberta Agriculture and Forestry’s pathology program if fields are needed for pea disease surveys.

Field visits consist of counting the notches on the nodes of 50 plants in the field. Surveyors wear boot covers, work along the field edge while doing the counts, and park on the approach to the field.

‘So how can you help? Contact me with the legal land description of your pea field and the municipality you are in,’ says Barkley. ‘You can contact me by sending an email, or a direct message on Twitter.’

‘Timing for the survey is important as we want the peas to be in the 4 to 6 node stage, and this is where we can use help in building a list of predetermined fields for our survey locations. This gives us the ability to plan our survey routes and be more efficient when we are out doing

2021 Motorcycle Season Insider Safety Tips by Aron Solomon With Spring having finally sprung, for most of the United States, it is once again time for those who love to ride to head out on the open road. To ensure that your 2021 riding season is a lot of fun but also safety first, follow these tips from experienced insiders. 1. Never, ever ride when you’re tired or under the influence of anything stronger than coffee. Part of motorcycle culture is experimentation, which is great when it doesn’t affect your personal safety or that of the people sharing the road with you. Eric Purchase, Senior Partner at the Erie, Pennsylvania law firm, Purchase, George & Murphey, P.C., counsels that you are better safe than sorry. “With more states having legalized cannabis, for example, since last year’s riding season, you need to be very careful about riding under the influence for both legal and safety reasons.” 2. Maintain space between you and other riders when riding in a group. Riding as a tight pack presents a huge problem for people driving cars. Let’s be honest - very few car drivers know how to deal with even a singular motorcycle. A tightlyformed pack presents them an intellectual and practical problem you just don’t need to add to their perceived stress of sharing the road with you. 3. Stay away from trucks. If a truck tire blows and you’re anywhere near it, the best case scenario is that you’ll end up sliding down the road or in a ditch. Tim George, also a Senior Partner at Purchase, George & Murphey, P.C., has seen far too many accidents between trucks and motorcycles. “As a rider, you will lose every single encounter with a truck. The best riders understand that while how they position their bike in relation to trucks may be legally fine, staying further away than is required by law is always a great idea, so please do.” 4. Never skip or skimp on beginning of season maintenance. The problem with motorcycle maintenance is that it can be expensive and time-consuming. But it’s part of the expenditure of time and money required to ride safely. The vast majority of deferred maintenance never gets done - you put it off and decide to wait until next season, then may repeat the same cycle. Safe riders always get their maintenance done before your first ride. 5. Always ride within yourself. This is an especially important rule early in motorcycle season. You may be riding with more skilled and experienced riders or even some people who ride during the winter and haven’t lost any of their skill and motorcycle reflexes. A safe rider is one who deeply understands their own abilities and limitations. If you’re going to push your comfort level in an effort to improve, the beginning of the season is not the time to do it.

6. Check the weather thoroughly for the entire course of your ride. Early rides are among the most exciting of the entire season. Being on the bike feels new again, the sun is out and the day can just unfold before you. But especially as you go from city or suburb to countryside or your ride involves altitude changes, you need to be sure that the road and weather conditions are exactly what you expect them to be. 7. Leave more distance in front of you at the beginning of the season than you usually do. No. More than that. A little more. Yes - that’s better. 8. Train yourself early in the new season to look where you want the bike to go. The most experienced riders often share this tip. It’s our nature to want to stare at the obstacles or hazards on and near the road that you want to avoid. But the many of the most competent riders have trained themselves to avoid this negative fixation on hazardous targets and instead focus on the path they

optimally want the bike to follow. 9. Keep even the smallest “survival kit” with you on every ride. This can be a kit as simple and compact as: ibuprofen, a small Swiss Army knife, a couple of $20 bills, zip ties, duck tape, and a couple of electrolyte packets that you can add to water if you get dehydrated. 10. Be the owl. Another tip that experienced riders share amongst each other is turning your entire head, not just moving your eyes, when you take the bike through a curve. Aside from making each turn infinitely more safe, your body and bike mechanics are far more aligned when you do this, making for improved turns throughout your ride. Aron Solomon is the Head of Digital Strategy for NextLevel.com and an adjunct Professor of Business Management at the Desautels Faculty of Management at McGill University.

Government highlights Canadian Ag Safety Week with up to $1.4 million in farm safety investments

Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, announced an investment of up to $1.4 million over two years to improve farm safety. The announcement helps kick off this year’s Canadian Agriculture Safety Week by providing the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association (CASA) with funding to provide valuable farm safety tools and advice to Canada’s agriculture industry.

This funding through the AgriCompetitiveness program will also facilitate a series of initiatives that promote farm safety for producers, their families, and workers. Activities include awareness raising, community engagement, and the development and maintenance of safety resources and tools to address existing and emerging safety needs at the provincial and national level. In addition to outreach and awareness activities, CASA will continue to provide farm safety learning opportunities to rural emergency responders and firefighters, and provide online health and safety training courses to farm workers.

A FARM, EQUIPMENT, VEHICLE OR ESTATE AUCTION THIS YEAR?

The theme for this year’s Canadian Agricultural Safety Week (CASW) is “Lead an AgSafe Canada”. From March 14 to March 20, 2021, CASA will showcase farm safety initiatives and programs across Canada. In addition to this annual event, CASA will continue to provide essential training and tools to farmers and stakeholders relating to existing and emerging safety concerns at the farm level.

Farm safety is crucial to the overall health and wellbeing of Canada’s farmers. Ensuring farmers have access to tools to protect both their mental and physical health is key to the strength and prosperity of the agriculture sector. “Agricultural producers work in an environment that presents many safety risks. Through various training and resources, including programs designed for children, the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association provides life-saving tools. This new investment from the federal government supports these excellent initiatives that protect our farm families,” said Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food.
