Exploring irrigation possibilities

Northern Horizon Team

Rob BROWN • Editor (Office) 250-782-4888 ext 112 • (Cell) 403-501-1492 editor@dcdn.ca

Irrigation has the potential to improve entire landscapes, communities and agricultural operations, bringing muchneeded water to areas that need it. On top of providing crop, livestock and food processing operations with water, it also supplies municipalities, recreational areas, wetlands and wildlife habitats. With that in mind, Agriculture and Forestry, through its Agri-Food Sector Investment and Growth Strategy, the Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB), the Special Areas Board (SAB) and the MD of Acadia, have reached a memorandum of understanding to assess the technical and financial feasibility of developing irrigation in east-central Alberta. For the MD of Acadia and the SAB, this feasibility study is the next step in work that has been underway since the ‘80s. Together, the Special Areas and the MD of Acadia cover over 5 million acres of land between Red Deer and the Saskatchewan border. ‘Alberta has a well-earned reputation for high-quality crops and livestock, much of which is grown in east-central Alberta. This feasibility study will help us determine if expanding irrigation is possible, which could lead to even more production in our province’, says Devin Dreeshen, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry. ‘The Council and staff of the MD of Acadia are excited to be partnering with the Special Areas, Alberta Agriculture, and the Canada Infrastructure Bank to investigate regional irrigation development opportunities. Irrigation would bring major economic benefits to our whole region, and to producers in it and would increase water security while enhancing recreational opportunities,’ says Peter Rafa, Reeve of the MD of Acadia. ‘Securing a reliable supply of water is critical to creating new opportunities in the Special Areas region, from increasing crop and cattle production to mitigating environmental challenges resulting from drought and climate change. This partnership will allow our region to look at how we can develop and expand irrigation in a financially feasible way,’ says Jordon Christianson, chair of the Special Areas Board. The irrigation industry creates thousands of jobs and contributes billions every year to Alberta’s agri-food gross domestic product. Last fall, the Alberta Government, together with the CIB and 8 irrigation districts, announced a historic $815-million investment in irrigation expansion and modernization.

Positive response to new slaughter licence Over 170 On-Farm Slaughter Operation licences issued in Alberta. ‘There is tremendous interest in Alberta’s new On-Farm Slaughter Operation (OFSO) licence providing opportunities for a real farm-to-fork food supply from Alberta livestock producers to Alberta consumers,’ says Wanda Aubee, executive director, food safety branch with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. In July 2020, the Government of Alberta amended the provincial Meat Inspection Regulation to allow for the licensing of this new operation. This licence allows a farmer to sell an animal direct to a consumer, with all the meat from that animal going to the purchaser of that animal for their own household consumption. This meat is uninspected and cannot be distributed or sold in any form, from any venue, including at the farm gate. Agriculture and Forestry issued the first OFSO licence August 26, 2020, and to date there have been 177 licences issued in Alberta for possible on-farm direct to consumer slaughter and processing. As of December 31, 2020, 728 animals were slaughtered under this new slaughter licence. The majority of animals slaughtered were poultry, at 442, followed by beef and pork, each at 79 head. ‘It is anticipated that the uptake of outdoor field slaughter under an OFSO licence will increase with the approach of warmer weather and as producers are better able to predict and build the demand for their animals into their business planning and herd/flock size,’ says Aubee. Find out more about the On-Farm Slaughter Operation licence online, or email questions to af.foodsafety@gov. ab.ca.

be one of the main factors responsible for doubling the number of rat sightings reported last year. Luckily, the increase in sightings does not mean there is an increase in rat presence or infestations.’ Many people know that Alberta is rat free and are eager to report sightings, but with limited exposure to rats in the province many Albertans do not know what rats actually look like. About half of the reported sightings last year turned out to be muskrats. Rats enter the province by overland migration along the Alberta/Saskatchewan border or by stowing away on planes, trains and automobiles. All rat sightings are investigated thoroughly. The Rat Control team is working towards broader use of the live cam in their

Peace Country Seed Grower Direct

will provide long term benefits as the live cam can be moved to places where rats are suspected or known, providing increased flexibility. ‘The live cam allows us to watch, trap and bait areas to see the rodents’ patterns, in terms of movement and what is working well for getting rid of them. If we can use live cams at more sites our understanding of their patterns becomes even greater and we can continue to make improvements to the bait and traps we use.’ The dedicated email and live cams will continue adding value to Alberta’s Rat Control program. As the team collects more data on rats found in Alberta, mapping out where they are found and recording their specific species, it is expected to lead to further advances in rat control for the province.

munication and advanced technology mean better response times to reported rat sightings and improvements in keeping Alberta rat free,’ says Karen Wickerson, rat and pest program specialist at Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. ‘Along with the Rat Control team we have made some enhancements to Alberta’s rat control program.’ A dedicated email address to report rat sightings and a live cam are two tools the team has added to a program that has been around since 1950. Last year, the Rat Control team introduced rats@gov.ab.ca. ‘With the new email address, specialists are more likely to receive an immediate visual along with location information and the team’s response time is much better. ‘CropChoice$ is a crop planning and risk management decision-making tool that can manage grains, oilseeds, pulses, specialty and forage crops to provide better crop planning decisions,’ explains Manglai, production crops economist with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. The program helps forecast revenues and margins for that crop enterprise by using inputs and then calculating the probabilities of achieving the results. He notes that CropChoice$ helps the user make better management decisions about cropping enterprises because it identifies, measures and manages risk. ‘It also helps the user evaluate various risk management strategies such as changing the crop mix, buying crop insurance and negotiating land rental arrangements.’ The latest edition features current crop insurance options, including updated risk coverage levels from the Alberta Financial Services Corporation (AFSC). It also includes projected crop costs covering up to 40 dryland and irrigated crops depending on location. ‘This 2021 version cannot be used to analyze the option of purchasing the Spring Price Endorsement (SPE), as effective March 15, 2021, AFSC announced the SPE program has been discontinued,’ points out Manglai. ‘CropChoice$ recognizes that future crop yields and prices cannot be known precisely,’ he explains. ‘To reflect this, the user enters worst, best and most likely values for yields and prices. Varying yield and price information based on individual expectations will give a clearer and more accurate forecast than traditional linear budgets.’ He adds that the user’s inputs for expected prices and yields in CropChoice$ helps forecast potential gross margins and profitability expectations for several crop plans. ‘It is a very easy program to set up and use, and the manual itself is an excellent resource. Once it is downloaded, double click on the icon, choose start from the welcome screen and get ready to create and compare crop plans.’ These updates support Alberta Agriculture and Forestry’s commitment of risk management decision tools for the crop industry. Download the free CropChoice$ program. Managing Nitrogen in Spring Yield, Quality, and Nitrogen U By Samuel Peprah Mackenzie Applied Research Association Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is an important grain crop in Canada, which provides nutrition to most of the population, and is well adapted to a wide range of environmental conditions. According to the Alberta Wheat Commission, approximately 9 million tonnes of wheat are produced annually in Alberta. The main goals in wheat production are grain yield and protein content for milling and baking quality. These goals are, however, limited due to available N, moisture, and temperature conditions, as producers choose between yield or quality. This has led to many wheat producers discounting the sale of their produce after harvest as wheat with grain protein below certain limits for CWRS (13.0 - 13.5%), is discounted most times depending on the year. Nitrogen is the most limiting nutrient for wheat production that affects growth, and grain yield, and quality. Currently, the increasing N application has largely contributed to bread wheat yield rise. However, the cost of N fertilizer production and application is increasing and environmental concerns make it necessary to enhance crop nitrogen use efficiency (NUE). Application of N fertilizer before or at the time of planting has the potential for minimizing N deficiency early in the growing season. On the other hand, applying all N in advance may result in N immobilization before plant uptake can take place or results in higher rates of lodging. Mid-season N fertilization enables matching the N supply with the crop’s N requirements and provides vital nutrients at the time when N uptake is at maximum, which facilitates efficient N fertilizer use. What is the Split Nitrogen application? Split applying crop nitrogen needs is a tool that is gaining widespread popularity among Canadian grain farmers. Many grain farmers today are splitting their nitrogen (N) applications ( not apply all of their nitrogen at seeding but withheld a portion of the nitrogen and applied when the crop is ready for it (typically midto-late-June). A split nitrogen application can be beneficial from an agronomic, economic, and environmental perspective. Used in conjunction with a nitrogen stabilizer, it can reduce N loss and improve nitrogen uptake for a healthier, higher-yielding crop. This trial aims to : Evaluate varying rates of N fertilizers on grain yield and quality Evaluate which stage of spring wheat growth is optimal to boost grain yield and protein Evaluate the nitrogen use efficiency of varying rates of N fertilizer Evaluate which wheat cultivar meets the milling and baking qualities Evaluate which wheat cultivar has a better nitrogen use efficiency. The trial was established at the Mackenzie Applied Research Association Research Farm at Fort Vermilion, Alberta (SE-23-10813-W5). The experiment had two levels: varieties (AAC Brandon and AC Stettler) and split nitrogen application (0:0, 70:0, 70:70, 140:0 Ib N ac-1 at boot and anthesis stage of growth). The wheat varieties were seeded at 250 seeds/m2 to a depth of 3.8 cm with a 6-row Fabro plot seeder spaced 20 cm apart on May 21, 2020. Based on the soil test recommendation, 11-52-0 and 0-0-60 were broadcasted also with urea (based on the treatments) at the time of seeding at 60 and 20 Ib ac-1, respectively. Urea-ammonium nitrate (28-0-0) was foliar applied to each variety at the boot and anthesis stage of growth.

Nitrogen use efficiency can also be calculated as nitrogen uptake efficiency (NUpE) x nitrogen utilization efficiency (NUtE) (Moll et al. 1982)

Wheat varieties It was observed that AC Stettler produced higher protein content (16.88 vs. 15.79 %) relative to AAC Brandon. On the other hand, AAC Brandon recorded greater yield (85.70 vs. 75.82 Bu ac-1), test weight (75.84 vs. 70.72 kg hL-1), and relative to AC Stettler. Both wheat varieties produced 15-20% higher grain protein the acceptable grain protein for milling and baking. This confirms that both varieties can be seeded by grain producers in Mackenzie County without discounting sales of grain production. This also

g Wheat to Boost Grain Use Efficiency suggests that grain yield and protein can be influenced by the variety selected and seeded by grain farmers. It was observed that nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) of AC Stettler was 13% higher than AAC Brandon wheat. This suggests that grain farmers seeding AC Stettler have a higher potential to maximize the nitrogen fertilizers applied and less loss via volatilization and denitrification. Nitrogen Application Rates Compared with the no N application (control), N at 70 and 140 Ib N ac-1 increased grain yield and protein by 13 and 16% and 7 and 10%, respectively. This is well illustrated in figure 1. below.

Figure 1. The typical response of grain yield and protein concentration to available N (adapted from Selles et al, 1997) The fact that grain protein was higher (than milling and baking qualities) at no N application suggests that soil N and precipitation play a key role in meeting the protein limits for quality bread. Nitrogen use efficiency was observed to be higher at 70 Ib N ac-1 compared to the 140 Ib N ac-1 applied rates in the study. Previous studies have shown that nitrogen utilization efficiency (NUE), or N uptake per unit N applied, is greatest where the yield response to N is highest. Therefore, NUE is generally

greatest with the lowest levels of applied N and decreases as the amount of N applied increases. The estimated 56.3 % NUE observed at 70 Ib N ac-1 shows that there was minimal loss of N and more N uptake by crops for growth and productivity. Stages of N application The stages of N application (at the boot and anthesis stages of wheat growth) had no significant effect on grain yield, quality, and nitrogen use efficiency. However, N applied at the anthesis stage in all the parameters measured had higher values compared to N applied at the boot stage. Conclusion Split nitrogen application on spring wheat has the potential to boost yield and protein content in the north peace of Alberta. The results from this study also show that varieties with higher NUE values tended to have higher nitrogen response and that breeding for NUE could be a potential method to improve yields and response to nitrogen fertilizers. Improving N response and NUE would have many benefits. The most important would be the economic gains for producers by requiring fewer nitrogen fertilizers to reach maximum yields and more efficient use of applied N. The environment would also benefit from less applied N and more efficient use of fertilizers by reducing the risk of N loss to the environment through leaching or volatilization. This would allow producers to better meet the growing demand for food worldwide while protecting the environment. This research project is partly funded by Alberta Wheat Commission. The industry contributed over $4 billion in government revenue to support health, education and other important social services. Additionally, the study found that between 2009 and 2019, forest industry companies invested about $14 billion in their B.C. operations. The study that measured the economic impact of B.C.’s forest industry across the province was led by Kurt Niquidet, COFI’s Chief Economist and Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Forestry at the University of British Columbia. The data was largely sourced from Statistics Canada. PwC conducted a review of the methodology and confirmed the accuracy of the results. “B.C.’s forest industry is, and will continue to, provide opportunities and benefits for British Columbians for decades to come,” said Katrine Conroy, B.C.’s Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations. “We look forward to continuing to work with First Nations, industry, labour and communities to ensure a healthy, resilient sector.” “Most British Columbians probably associate the Northeast with the oil and gas sector, but forestry is a key contributor to Dawson Creek and the broader region’s economy,” said Mile Zero mayor Dale Bumstead. “The forest sector is critically important to B.C.’s economy, and most importantly to the close to 50,000 British Columbians, including 12,000 USW members, who work directly in the sector proudly producing renewable, lowcarbon wood products for the world,”

said Jeff Bromley, Chair, Wood Council Canada, United Steelworkers.

Heart murmurs in your pets Dr. Zoe Ross

You may have observed your veterinarian listening to your pet’s heart and lungs with a stethoscope during their examination. There are many reasons why we do this but one of them is to listen for the presence of a heart murmur. A heart murmur is an abnormal sound that is heard during the beating of the heart and is caused by turbulent blood flow. Instead of a clear “lub dub” sound we may hear a “whooshing” sound. There are many different reasons why a pet may have a heart murmur. We will classify the murmur based on how loud it is and where we can hear it on the patient’s body in relation to the heart and blood vessels around the heart. In some very young patients, the murmur is “innocent or physiologic” and often we recheck these murmurs in a month or two and they will have resolved on their own. This can be common in larger dogs that grow rapidly but can also occur in smaller breed dogs and cats. The murmur will typically resolve by the time the animal is 4 to 6 months of age. In other young animals, there may have been a problem

in the way the heart or the blood vessels around the heart have developed resulting in abnormal blood flow. The vessels may be smaller or larger than normal or there may be a hole between the chambers of the heart or between vessels outside the heart. In some cases, this can be quite serious and can affect how the young animal grows and develops. Usually when we detect murmurs in older patients it is either because the valves in the heart have become thickened over time and no longer close properly or there is an abnormality in the muscles in the wall of the heart. It is called mitral valve disease or mitral insufficiency when the valves become abnormal. This is more common in small breed dogs and can progress to congestive heart failure. The other reason that a heart murmur may develop in an older animal is a condition called dilated cardiomyopathy. This is a disease where the heart muscles stretch out and the heart becomes enlarged with a thin wall. There are some breeds of dogs that are more prone to this condition such as Dobermans, Cocker Spaniels, Boxers, German Shepherds, Great Danes, St. Bernards and Irish Wolfhounds. Cats can develop a disease called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy where the heart muscle becomes abnormally thick and the heart no longer contracts properly. Some breeds of cats are more pre disposed to this such as Maine Coons, Ragdolls and Sphynx. In less common cases the murmur can be caused by other health problems such as severe anemia, low protein levels in the blood or hyperthyroidism. While a veterinarian can detect a murmur by listening to the heart with a stethoscope, it can be more difficult to determine the reason for the murmur and whether treatment or surgery is required. We will consider the age of the patient, the overall health of the patient and the breed of the patient. It is also important to determine if the heart murmur is causing the pet problems. Often if the murmur is severe, it can affect the ability of the heart to pump blood

efficiently and there may be some edema (fluid) in the lungs. Sometimes the animal will have symptoms of problems from the abnormal blood flow such as coughing, exercise intolerance (getting tired easily), panting or breathing harder, syncope (fainting episodes), weight loss or restlessness. We often will recommend radiographs of the chest to evaluate the size and shape of the heart and to look for any changes in the lungs. Ideally we will refer the patient to see a veterinary cardiologist and an echocardiogram will be done (an ultrasound exam of the heart) or other more advanced diagnostics and the cardiologist can tailor a treatment plan specific to the findings of this cardiac evaluation and the patient needs. Often, especially in the cases of mitral valve insufficiency and dilated cardiomyopathy we can’t cure the disease but there are medications that can be quite helpful in making the pet more comfortable and help improve the survival time and quality of life of the pet.

Spring has sprung! Time for core equine vaccinations. Core vaccines target against diseases that your horse can contract while never leaving your farm. These include: West Nile Virus (WNV), Eastern and Western Encephalomyelitis (EEE & WEE), Rabies & Tetanus . These core vaccines are not related to travel or horse to horse contact. Tetanus is an organism found in the soil that most commonly enters through a wound or surgical site. West Nile and EEE/WEE are mosquito born diseases. Rabies is transmitted through saliva, and is most commonly carried by bats and small mammals. Your equine partner doesn’t have to leave their residence to be at risk!

WATER QUALITY ON PASTURE (www.beefconsultants.com, April 5, 2020) Winters with above normal snowfall are beneficial to improve water quality in pasture dugouts. With a large spring runoff, dugouts can over fill, allowing for some of the water from last year to be “flushed” out. If the water from last summer had high amounts of total dissolved solids or mineral content; the flush will reduce the concentrations. In 2017, a grazing reserve in north-west Saskatchewan experienced cattle losses, which was directly traced back to water quality. There was very little runoff that spring and the summer was very hot. This increased the amount of water the cows consumed daily. Evaporative losses were high, which resulted in the minerals in the dugout water to become more concentrated. Water test results indicated high levels of minerals, including sulfur. It was determined that the cows died from polio, which is caused by high levels of sulfur in the diet (including water). Approximately 200 head died within 7 days of being turned out into this paddock. Low quality water can reduce animal performance. High levels of total dissolved solids reduce the amount of water animals consume. If they do not drink adequate amounts of water, forage consumption decreases. This reduces milk production and growth rates of calves or backgrounding animals.

Photo credit: Nora Paulovich, Jackknife Creek Land & Cattle Dugouts that are fenced off and the cattle drink from a tank, or nose pump results in higher animal performance. Work done in Lethbridge by Dr. Walter Wilms (1990) reported an improved weight gain of 15.8 lb. (7.2 kg) for lactating cows and an additional 22 lb. (10 kg) for calves at side over a 30 day trial.Steers on pasture had an additional 44 lb. weight gain in 71 days. The differences in weight gains would not be noticeable to the eye and usually are considered to be “just the year” and accepted. In some areas of Alberta, well water and dugouts can have high levels of sodium present. Sodium makes up 39% the weight of salt. If sodium levels are above 300 ppm or mg/l, the amount of free choice salt or mineral containing salt consumed will be reduced. This negatively impacts growth and health of the animals.

Consultants have wrapped up their interviews with agribusinesses and stakeholders for the agricultural labour market study, funded by the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction and led by Northern Lights College. The study, titled “State of the Agriculture Labour Trends and Needs in Northeast British Columbia,” is developing a broader picture of the issues and challenges related to labour availability facing the agriculture industry in Northeast BC. Under the guidance of the advisory committee, R.A. Malatest & Associates Ltd. has completed over 40 interviews with representatives from BC’s northeast region. Surveys with agribusinesses are ongoing and will help develop a broader picture of the current labour force and a better understanding of anticipated changes expected over the next decade. The next steps in the study will be analysis of the data, and reporting findings and recommendations to the advisory committee. The agriculture study concludes in June 2021 and a report produced outlining a labour market strategy to address current and projected labour market needs in Northeast BC. It will make recommendations to help new talent develop worldclass skills and encourage the industry to further embrace a culture of innovation.

Seed production set to grow in regions around B.C. B.C. seed producers may soon be able to access new seed processing equipment in up to a dozen BC Food Hub Network facilities. This equipment will increase production of high-quality vegetable, grain and plant seed and support B.C.’s food system. FarmFolk CityFolk will lead the ministry-funded BC Seed Hub feasibility study to determine the potential of adding in-hub infrastructure or mobile cleaning units at food hubs in different regions of the province. “Many seed producers are smaller, family-run farms that cannot afford their own seed cleaning and packaging equipment, but by expanding the role of our food hubs to include those services, we can help solve that problem,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries. “We’re going to look at how we can increase seed production in different regions and work with B.C. farmers to support and expand seed-sector infrastructure, services and training in B.C.” FarmFolk CityFolk will consult with different food hub operators to determine which facilities are most interested and appropriately located and sized to include seed processing equipment. Adding seed-specific equipment to the hubs would allow many farmers in multiple regions of the province to clean, treat, weigh, package and label their products at their convenience, yearround. “Demand for our first mobile seed cleaner has exceeded all of our expectations with over 100,000 pounds of seeds from over 50 varieties being cleaned since early 2019,” said Anita Georgy, executive director, FarmFolk CityFolk. “This tells us farmers are ready and eager to add seed production to their crop plans. Being able to partner with the food hub network to increase access to seed cleaning equipment will directly increase B.C.’s seed and food security.” The equipment will help small-scale seed growers prepare their products for sale and distribution while limiting their operating and investment costs, as well as creating the opportunity for them to participate in the networking and partnerships that food hubs foster. “COVID-19 has shown us how fragile our seed supply chain is and highlighted the importance of a resilient local seed network,” said Saanich Organics’ Theresa Heinekey. “All seed producers in our area have been struggling to increase our production in order to keep up with increased demand. Access to the mobile seed cleaner has made a huge difference in our ability to process seed efficiently and has increased

the overall quality of the seed we sell.” The BC Food Hub Network supports the establishment of a network of regional shared food processing and food hubs. The hubs increase value-added processing opportunities for producers and processors, and advance innovation in B.C.’s food and beverage processing sector.

will also produce a record soybean crop.’ Despite a large South American soybean crop and a potentially record large United States soybean crop, soybean demand is expected to remain strong during the next year. Even with the large crops projected, United States soybean carryover, while tight this crop year, is forecast to remain tight next crop year as well. ‘Oilseed markets will continue to be sensitive to weather forecasts, weather events and export announcements throughout the next year,’ explains Blue.

‘Why has the market given so much attention to South American soybean production? Over the last 12 years, Brazil has overtaken the United States as the number one soybean producer. Argentina’s soybean production has also increased,’ explains Neil Blue, provincial crops market analyst with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. ‘The South American soybean crop has encountered weather challenges during the last few months, but harvest is now well underway.’ Blue points out that huge demand for oilseeds and grains by China has been a major market-driving factor. China is the largest volume soybean importer in the world market, importing over 100 million tonnes of soybeans a year and accounting for 60% of world soybean imports. China also produces about 19 million tonnes of soybeans a year. ‘U.S. soybean exports have been very strong at just past the half way mark of this crop year. With high prices stimulating 2021 U.S. soybean acreage, it is quite possible that the U.S.

Intake for carbon tax relief grants open Eligible greenhouse operators can now apply for carbon tax relief grants for the 2020 production year. Commercial producers in B.C. who grow vegetables, ornamental flowers and plants, forest seedlings and nursery plants in greenhouses are eligible to apply for the grant until May 10, 2021, if they: had sales exceeding $20,000 in 2020; used natural gas or propane to heat their greenhouses or produce carbon dioxide; and had a production area greater than 455 square metres. The grant covers 80% of the carbon tax commercial greenhouse growers of eligible crops paid on the natural gas and propane they used for greenhouse heating and carbon dioxide production in 2020. Cannabis is not an eligible crop at any phase of production, including propagation. Greenhouse growers supply communities with fresh vegetables for about 10 months of the year on more than 300 hectares of land, growing tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, eggplants, lettuce and other crops. In addition to vegetable growers, B.C.’s floriculture and nursery industries grow more than 80 million greenhouse flowers and cuttings and produce approximately 50 million potted plants a year. Application information and eligibility criteria are available here: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/industry/agriculture-seafood/programs/greenhouse-carbon-tax-reliefgrant

Alberta Wildfire launches brand new mobile app

Alberta Wildfire launched a brand new application in March for Albertans and those who want to know more about wildfire in the province. The new application has many features, including the ability to search for specific information such as fire bans and advisories across the province. It allows the user to select different map layers that show fire danger ratings or even the location of mountain pine beetles in Alberta. ‘The new app offers so many features and information for the public,’ says Melissa Story, provincial information officer with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. ‘We often get feedback that Albertans want one place to go for all their wild-

fire inquiries. This app captures all of those things.’ The new intuitive application provides wildfire information in real time, in a onestop shop format. By using the GPS function, users can instantly know if a fire ban is in place in their area or if there is an active wildfire nearby. They can also get a provincial look at the current wildfire situation with the home view. Users can subscribe to forest area notifications and stay on top of emerging situations in areas of interest. ‘We’re always looking for ways to improve the user experience and we encourage people to provide feedback on the app so we can continue to make it valuable for Albertans,’ says Story.

Technology, innovation to strengthen BC’s food security

UPDATED MY22 JOHN DEERE 9 SERIES TRACTORS OFFER MORE POWER AND TECHNOLOGY TO HELP FARMERS COVER MORE ACRES IN LESS TIME AND REDUCE OPERATING COSTS

The Province is investing in programs that will apply technology and innovation to agriculture to strengthen B.C.’s food security and support economic recovery. Building on the Food Security Task Force’s recommendations, the new Agritech Concierge will support food producers and agritech innovators, including recipients of the Agritech Grant program, advance their businesses and address the agricultural challenges being faced by the agriculture industry, in B.C. and around the globe.

Olathe, Kan. (March 02, 2021) – The model year 2022 John Deere 9 Series Tractors have been enhanced to help today's farmers start earlier and run later to get their seeding, tillage, and planting work done within their optimal timeframe. The updated 9 Series lineup includes wheel 9R, two-track 9RT and four-track 9RX Tractors that enable farmers to cover more acres in less time with greater accuracy and quality, and reduce their operating costs – all while enjoying a larger, more comfortable cab. John Deere is the only manufacturer to offer all three tractor configurations.

“Supporting our province’s food producers and agritech innovators is part of building a strong economic recovery for everyone,” said Premier John Horgan. “We’re acting on the valued work and recommendations of our Food Security Task Force. By launching these programs now, our province will reap the benefits of access to homegrown, safe, nutritious and affordable food for generations of British Columbians to come.”

"Farmers will appreciate the added low-end torque and lugging ability of the all-new, John Deere PowerTech 13.6 L diesel engine. This engine powers models with 390 to 590 horsepower and runs with 50% less engine noise. It’s also easier to perform routine maintenance on," said Ryan Jardon, product marketing manager for John Deere. "Our largest tractors, the 9R 640 and 9RX 640, are powered by a Cummins 15 L diesel engine." To accommodate the added horsepower and ballast of the articulated 9 Series Tractors, several undercarriage, axle, and front-frame components were strengthened and improved. Strengthening these components has increased the weight of the tractor and the maximum available ballast from 60,000 to 67,000 pounds to put the increased power to the ground. The front-weight support and weights are now factory installed for the 9RX. Rear-axle load ratings on John Deere Scraper Special 9R and 9RX Tractors were increased to 26,500 pounds. Select 9 Series Tractors can be ordered with hydraulic Intelligent Power Management (IPM) that provides up to 50 extra horsepower depending on the gear chosen. This added power can be unlocked via intelligent software monitoring of hydraulic demand and engine power. "It's the perfect performance boost when pulling equipment through tough terrain or over large hills, or with high hydraulic demands, such as air-seeding rigs. Hydraulic IPM is available on the 9RT 570, and 9R/9RX 590 and 640 Tractors," Jardon said.

The task force was appointed by Premier Horgan in July 2019 to provide strategic advice and recommendations brought forward in a 2020 Food Security Task Force report. The report outlined how technology and innovation can be developed to strengthen B.C.’s agriculture sector and food security.

All 9 Series Tractors come equipped from the factory with JDLink connectivity, plus an integrated StarFire 6000 GPS receiver, Generation 4 CommandCenter™ display and AutoTrac guidance. These technologies enable the operator to reduce overlap and maximize inputs all with less stress. JDLink comes with 5 years of service, making it easy for customers to take advantage of the benefits of a connected machine, which includes machine-to-machine communication; streaming machine, field, and crop information to the John Deere Operations Center; Wireless Data Transfer; and John Deere Connected Support.™ These integrated technologies help farmers save time and reduce costs. "The factory-installed Automation 4.0 capabilities drive season-long benefits. For example, AutoTrac Turn Automation and MachineSync™ enable consistent operations on headlands and when multiple machines work together, such as in seeding, when two tractors are working in a field together. Automation 4.0 also enables AutoPath™ for farmers to accurately document and precisely follow each row of crops in fields throughout the season," Jardon said. "Using data collected from the first pass in the field, either strip-till or planting, AutoPath establishes precise guidance lines for all subsequent field passes, no matter the machine type or width of the equipment. This makes it easy to find the right row, reduces overlaps and damage to standing crops, and eliminates the need for guess rows."

Through a suite of services, the Agritech Concierge will help businesses grow, diversify, access new markets and attract investment opportunities. The concierge will provide personalized service to businesses to attract investment capital, navigate government programs and connect with other levels of government.

Inside the larger, restyled 9 Series cab is more storage space, more USB ports and better connectivity than in previous models. For an automotive-like experience, an optional 6.5-inch touchscreen satellite radio can be added that's smart-phone ready so operators can use voice commands or integrated controls to get directions, make calls, listen to music, or send and receive messages. All 9 Series Tractors offer industry-leading operator comfort, and visibility with a choice of Select, Premium or Ultimate cab packages to choose from. The Ultimate comfort and convenience package includes footrests, a refrigerator, and a heated, ventilated massaging seat that swivels up to 25 degrees to the left and 40 degrees to the right, for improved operator visibility and comfort. The Ultimate visibility package features 24 work LED and eight convenience LED lights; electric, heated, telescoping mirrors; sunshades; front, right, side and rear wipers; and front and rear integrated cameras. For customers who want the very best of these packages, John Deere has combined them into its Signature Edition. This package also includes the Generation 4 Extended Display, dual hydraulic pumps, Automation 3.0 activation / AutoLoad™ for Scraper Special tractors, and HydraCushion™ front-axle suspension on 9R Tractors.

The concierge will help companies understand and navigate the land opportunities available to grow their businesses and provide advice on how to work with communities to identify opportunities for investment.

All 9 Series Tractors have the power and options to help operators farm more acres in less time. On wheel 9R Tractors, six models are available, ranging from 390 to 640 horsepower and can be equipped with a multitude of tire options. HydraCushion suspension is an industry exclusive option that can be added to reduce tractor bouncing during transport, improve ride quality and reduce the potential for powerhop in the field to put more power to the ground.

Four models of John Deere 9RX four-track tractors are available ranging from 490 to 640 horsepower, the industry's highest horsepower levels offered in a four-track tractor. Multiple track widths and tread spacings are available, enabling these tractors to be used in row-crop and broad-acre applications where more traction and flotation are desired. Four-post cab suspension is standard and dampens pitch and roll, isolating the cab from shocks, while providing maximum comfort and ride quality in the field or on the road. Four-track 9RX Tractors offer the comfort and maneuverability of a wheel tractor with the pulling performance and flotation of a track tractor.

R0011850258

Three two-track 9RT models are available ranging from 470 to 570 horsepower and feature the industry exclusive AirCushion™ walking beam suspension that improves ride quality. Two-track tractors provide a large footprint with less ground pressure and lower slip values compared to wheel tractors, making them ideal for straight-line pulling, and broad-acre tillage.

“The pandemic has reinforced the vital role our province’s agricultural sector plays in ensuring that British Columbians have access to safe, reliable and sustainable food,” said Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Jobs, Economic Recovery and Innovation. “These investments and the concierge will strengthen our province’s food security, catalyze innovation and ensure the agritech.”

Peace Country Soil Health Academy: meet the educators Gabe Brown is one of the pioneers of the current soil health movement which focuses on the regeneration of our resources. Gabe, along with his wife Shelly, and son Paul, own and operate Brown’s Ranch, a diversified 5,000 acre farm and ranch near Bismarck, North Dakota. The ranch consists of several thousand acres of native perennial rangeland along with perennial pastureland and cropland. Their ranch focuses on farming and ranching in nature’s im-

age. The Browns holistically integrate their grazing and no-till cropping systems, which include a wide variety of cash crops, multi-species cover crops along with all natural grass finished beef and lamb. They also raise pastured laying hens, broilers and swine. This diversity and integration has regenerated the natural resources on the ranch without the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and fungicides. The Browns are part own-

ers of a state inspected abattoir which allows them to direct market their products. They believe that healthy soil leads to clean air, clean water, healthy plants, animals, and people. Over 2,000 people visit the Brown’s Ranch annually to see this unique operation. They have had visitors from all fifty states and twentyfour foreign countries. Gabe and Brown’s Ranch have received many forms of recognition for their work, including a Growing Green award from the Natural Resource Defense Council, an Environmental Stewardship Award from the National Cattle-

men’s Beef Association, and a Zero-Till Producer of the Year Award, to name a few. Gabe has also been named one of the twenty-five most influential agricultural leaders in the United States. Gabe recently authored the book, “Dirt to Soil, One Family’s Journey Into Regenerative Agriculture.” He is a partner, along with Ray Archuleta and Dr. Allen Williams, in Understanding Ag LLC. He is also an instructor for Soil Health Academy, which focuses on teaching others the power and importance of healthy functioning ecosystems.
