There will be a 2021 edition of the Dawson Creek Exhibition and Stampede after all. The DC Exhibition Association (DCEA)announced today on Facebook they would be putting on an “In-person, traditional fair,” August 11 to 15.

Janis KMET • Sales Associate (BC Sales) (Office) 250-782-4888 ext 104 • (Cell) 250-219-0369 jkmet@dcdn.ca

Thanks to the BC PHO announcement June 29, in which it was said capacities will increase for outdoor organized gatherings and venues will be able to have 50% of it’s full capacity, the Association felt they would be able to put on an event this year.

Lisa GIESINGER • Accounting 505 - 4th Ave., Prince George, BC V2L 3H2 (Office) 250-960-2771 • (Fax) 250-960-2761 lsmith@glaciermedia.ca

“With the announcement from the BC Government yesterday in regards to capacity levels for fairs and outdoor events we will be selling advanced tickets online, stay tuned for release dates,” reads the announcement.

THE NORTHERN HORIZON

The announcement said the fair will be scaled back in some ways, but that livestock exhibits will still take place.

Published by Northern Publishing Ltd. 901 - 100th Avenue, Dawson Creek, BC V1G 1W2 (Office) 250-782-4888 • (Fax) 250-782-6300 (Email) horizon@dcdn.ca • (Website) www.dawsoncreekmirror.ca

The DCEA was holding out hope prior to June 29 that the next announcement on restrictions would give them the goahead to begin planning an event, with just six weeks to prepare.

The program supports the planning of farming projects in Indigenous communities. It leads to economic activity, local employment and contributes to the province’s food production and food security. To date, the program has supported

48 communities and entrepreneurs through $297,390 in funding. For example, the program is helping the Tsawwassen First Nations (TFN) with agricultural education and training to grow community involvement in farming and increase food security. Once farming activity increases, the TFN is aiming to establish a sustainable community garden and a community-supported agriculture program, which will allow customers to subscribe to receive fresh produce throughout the growing season. “The Tsawwassen First Nations is working hard to bring more agricultural opportunities to our community,” said Chief Ken Baird, TFN. “The professional guidance provided through the B.C. Indigenous Agriculture Development Program is supporting our goals of increasing agricultural knowledge and farming activity within the Tsawwassen First Nations.” “The Indigenous Agriculture Development Program has helped me to get serious about business planning to ensure my farming will be profitable,” Napoleon said. “I have years of farming experience, but never ran the business side of things. Working with a mentor really helped me to build these skills. I now know that I can farm and make a decent living.” There is 150,000 available for this round of funding: Stream 1 provides funding of up to $19,000 to Indigenous governments, communities, and organizations for feasibility assessments of food and agriculture development options, food security planning and business planning. Stream 2 provides funding up to $8,000 to Indigenous entrepreneurs for specialized planning and coaching services to develop and plan their food and agricultural businesses.

Moberly Lake’s Boreal Centre for Sustainability is continuing their work on local food security. This summer they are crafting plans to add to the centre’s interpretative trail for medicinal and edible plants. The non-profit was founded by local agrologist Reg Whiten in 2000 in order to protect the watershed. “It’s a very relevant time. I think people are going to find it quite valuable to see how they can start their greenhouses early with alternative energy approaches that we’re looking at,” said Whiten, noting the centre has always used recycled materials to achieve that aim. One summer student has been hired so far, helping

with all aspects of their tech-driven projects including irrigation, solar air furnaces, and air to ground heating for green houses. “We’re not looking for fancy designs or fancy constructions - it’s just based on what a family needs. Our target is to make food security accessible to groups or populations that don’t normally get too involved,” he said. He added that outreach remains a notable aspect of the centre, with visits planned at farmer’s markets and local businesses. An AGM is also planned for July 18. Plans are also being crafted to add more signs to Medicine Woman Creek - an interpretative trail educating users on wild edible

and medicinal plants. The plants were named in English, Cree, and Latin, accompanied by identifying pictures. “Ideally, we’d like to pair with recreational users and groups, I think that’s the best fit.” He noted the community orchard is also doing well, with cherries, plums, pears, and haskap berries planted over three years ago. “We’re continuing to work on the community orchard, it’s been well prepared from the work we did last summer – chip mulching and that kind of thing to retain moisture. So that practice has worked quite well,” said Whiten. tsummer@ahnfsj.ca

Can Forage be Interseede hay or pasture stand? By Julie Robinson Can a rancher fill in the bare spots that have developed in their hay and pasture fields? A question we would all like to know the answer to… Big Surprise the answer depends on a number of factors. BCRC has a bullet on their website “Overseeding a legume into an existing stand is a relatively inexpensive rejuvenation technique however, establishment success is highly dependent upon favourable conditions.” Factors affecting success include

like Figure 2. The white golf tees in the image are place at each Birdsfoot trefoil seeding 45 days after seeding. By the following spring in 2020 no trefoil plants could be found in Figure 1 site.

1. What are the species in the stand? 2. How old is the stand? 3. Why is there bare soil and if there is bare soil or lots of thatch? Species that research has said interseed well • Red Clover – quick to establish • Birdsfoot trefoil – slower to establish but nonbloating legume • Alfalfa (but not into old alfalfa stands) • Orchardgrass • Perennial Ryegrass • Tall Fescue What seems to work well is filling in overgrazed, missed or abused areas with overseeding. The current project with the Peace River Forage Association of BC has seen Birdsfoot Trefoil successfully fill in bare areas in pasture like sacrifice areas near watering troughs etcetera. Interseeding into a yr one stand to fill in drill misses has worked well, but seeding into old stands that have liter cover and dandelions and quack grass has had much less success. In Figure 1 and 2 you can seed two different seeding site conditions where figure one has more plant competition and figure 2 has more bare soil. As expected, new seeding can establish easier in conditions

Gaschnitz Family Awards 2021 Memorial Ag Knowledge Sponsorship Monica Benoit Two accomplished young ladies were recently named the recipients of the Grant Gaschnitz Memorial Ag Knowledge Sponsorship. Sarah Cairns and Colbi Pratt were the recipients of this year’s award, which was put together in 2019 by the Gaschnitz family in Grant’s memory. They will each receive a $500 sponsorship to be used to further their agriculture knowledge. Grant Gaschnitz was a prominent figure of the Peace Country agriculture community. Grant was passionate about agriculture, beef cattle production in particular, and he had a special interest in supporting young people who were starting out in their farming and ranching careers. Grant always encouraged young producers to work on advancing their knowledge of the industry to help them run more productive and profitable operations. He was a very active member of the Peace Country Beef & Forage Association (PCBFA), being awarded a lifetime membership in 2019. Grant could always be found promoting educational opportunities through PCBFA and other local and provincial organizations. Many admired Grant for always being willing to consider new

ideas and try new things on his own farm. The Gaschnitz Family is very proud to be able to continue Grant’s legacy of promoting life-long learning. The response to this year’s call for applications was overwhelming, with numerous inspiring applications from young producers across the Peace Country. For 2021, the Gaschnitz Family made the decision to award two sponsorships. Both of this year’s recipients stood out for their commitment to contributing back to the agriculture community once their education is complete and for having a passion for the industry. Recipient Sarah Cairns is an ambitious producer from the High Prairie area. She ranches with her family and runs her own small herd of purebred Hereford cattle. She aspires to build this herd and focus on low maintenance cattle that thrive in a forage-based system. Sarah is currently a student at Olds College, enrolled in the Land & Water Resources Program. Upon graduation, Sarah plans to be part of her family farm and is keen to bring her knowledge back to the Peace Country and play an advisory role in the ag industry, helping producers of the region to maximize profits and production.

Recipient Colbi Pratt was born and raised on a mixed family farm operation east of High Prairie. She particularly enjoys the livestock side of the agriculture industry and will use the sponsorship in pursuit of a diploma from Olds College in Agriculture Management. Colbi aspires to bring back the knowledge she will acquire in taking this program back to the family farm as well as back to the ag industry in the Peace Country. The Grant Gaschnitz Memorial Ag Knowledge Sponsorship is awarded each year to one or more Peace Country producers who are in the beginning stages of their farming and ranching careers to assist in gaining further knowledge. The sponsorship is administered and supported by the Peace Country Beef and Forage Association. Watch for next year’s application in late 2021 on the PCBFA website. Donations can be made to the sponsorship fund to support the young farmers and ranchers of the region at any time. Details can be found on the Peace Country Beef & Forage Association website, www.peacecountrybeef. ca under the Scholarship tab.

Heat stroke is no joke says Dr. Joana With the record highs this summer, heat stoke is something to talk about. Heat stroke is known as over-heating. This occurs when your pets core body temperature rises above normal. Normal body temperature in a dog ranges from 37.5 to 39.2 degrees Celsius. Normal body temperature in a cat 37.8-39.5 Celsius. Humans will normally sweat when hot, but animals compared to humans have fewer sweat glands. The majority of the sweat glands in a dog and cat are located in the paw pads. Sweating through the paw pads is actually a secondary method of self-cooling in dogs. Cats regularly sweat through their paws. Obese, flat-faced breeds, heart disease patients, and senior animals are at higher risk of heat stroke. How do dogs primarily cool down? The main mechanism a dog’s body naturally cools down is by panting. Panting allows for evaporation of heat (in the form of water) from the tongue, mouth, and upper respiratory tract. Panting is a very efficient way of cooling and takes up very little energy thanks to the elasticity of a dog’s lungs and airways. Another way dogs can lower their body temperature is through dilating their vessels (vasodilation) in order to bring blood flow to the surface of their skin. This method of cooling is not as efficient

as panting and can indicate overheating is occurring. What about flat faced breeds? Flat faced breeds, known as Brachycephalic breeds such as pugs, French/English bull dogs, Shih Tzu, Boxers and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels tend to have smaller nares (nose holes), longer soft palates (obstructing airway), and smaller trachea sizes than other breeds. This makes it difficult for them to breathe normally or get adequate oxygen with each breath. With high temperatures outside, it can cause their upper respiratory tract to swell, thereby partially or completely closing the airway blocking their main mechanism of cooling. What about cats? Besides sweating through their paw pads, cats will combine a few techniques to dissipate body heat. Cats will stretch out their bodies, seek out shade, and drink cool water. Cats will lick/groom their coats more frequently in summer to cool down. When their saliva evaporates from their fur, it provides a cooling effect (similar to humans sweating). As a last resort, cats will pant. Excessive panting is not normal and may be a sign your cat is dangerously overheated. Signs of heat stroke in your pets: Dogs: the most telling sign is excessive panting with drooling and thirst. Other signs include, vomiting, fast heart rate, red colour of gums and tongue, bloody diarrhea, mental dullness, staggering or collapse. Cats: Initial signs of heat stroke in cats include heavy panting, drooling and excessive grooming. Further signs include redness of tongue, vomiting and staggering/collapse.

Managing heat stroke If your pet is suffering from heat stroke, call your veterinarian immediately. One thing that we may tell you before getting to us is to have you wet down your dog in cool water. Do not wrap your dog in a wet towel, this actually traps in body heat!! Once at the clinic, treatment is targeted at cooling down your animal, supporting their blood pressure with drugs and fluids, fluid volume necessitation, and monitoring blood changes. Cooling techniques done by your vet can include, cool intravenous (in the vein) fluids to help with dehydration and blood pressure, oxygen therapy, cool or cold-water baths, cold water enemas or even cool water safely injected into the abdomen in severe cases. If an animal’s body temperature is too high for extended periods of time, it can be very detrimental to their blood causing it to break up/destroy the red blood cells ultimately leading to death. Tips on being safe or preventing heat stroke: In dogs, exercise can be done in the early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler, offering lots of water, shade or a pool to play in. Keeping them where there is air conditioning if helpful during the day. Avoiding hot pavement, hot cars and direct sunlight. In cats, it is important to keep their fur brushed to be free of mats and remove excess hair in the warmer months. Making sure there is plenty of water around and a space for them to find a cool, shady spot. Offering wet food or tuna juice to increase water intake, or even offer ice cubes for them to play with. Enjoy the summer and be safe out there!

Is your animal suffering from allergies?

It is not uncommon for dogs, cats and horses to be allergic to environmental substances such as mold, dust, pollen, insect bites, fleas, shampoos and food or supplement ingredients. Allergy symptoms are usually seen in the skin and respiratory system. Possible signs include itching, hives, patchy hair loss, bumps and crusting. Respiratory symptoms can include coughing, sneezing and wheezing. Horses may present symptoms of heaves. Initially, heaves may produce nasal discharge, a mild cough and slight exercise intolerance, but as the condition advances, a horse usually coughs more frequently and deeply, and breathing may be labored even when standing still.

Bareback: To Be or Not to Be Glenn Stewart Some are fans of bareback riding and some are not. As a clinician, I suggest all the time to people to ride bareback. I ride bareback myself on occasion throughout the year. The reason I do, and the reason I suggest others do, is because it accesses muscles and balance that I cannot achieve in the saddle. Ten minutes a day bareback for two weeks improves my riding more than I can in two months in the saddle or in a year. The 10 minutes I spend will be done with enough activity that when I slide off my horse it’s hard to walk. I want my groin muscles to know they did something. I hold myself up slightly with the inside of my thighs so my seat bones are not digging or bouncing on my horses’ back. This also works our muscles more. If I ride actively enough for 10 minutes, my goal is to be sore enough in 5 days that I need 2 days off to recover. Many people will say that’s ridiculous or I don’t want to hurt or some other excuse, but I figure a little on purpose muscle soreness is better than falling off by accident and having a trip to the hospital. I know for a fact it helps my quality of riding in the saddle, which I know my horse appreciates. While riding, I am consciously trying to avoid bouncing or just sitting there like I’m on a couch. The reason for me is to wake up some muscles and balance that have gone dormant.

tion to the horses’ back. Using a good quality bareback pad is a great way to protect the horses’ back and keep your pants clean. A good pad should also be built to have a real sticky surface to sit on. The ones we have at The Horse Ranch have 100 percent wool for the horses’ back and rough out leather to sit on which is like Velcro. You can also put your saddle pad under the bareback pad to help distribute your weight for added comfort for the horse.

chase them back to camp for 10 miles. I also used to round up my horses every morning bareback - for 100 days straight each year for 15 years bringing them into camp.

I ride mostly with a saddle but I’ve found great benefit riding bareback and definitely feel weak at the start and strong at the end of my 2 weeks or whatever length of time I choose to practice. However, as I mentioned earlier, if you just sit there your sit bones dig into the If you’re going to use bareback rid- horses’ back and can make them very ing as a tool to sharpen your skills as a uncomfortable and maybe sore. Use rider, do enough to make yourself sore, the inside of your thighs to carry you yes sore. In 2 weeks you will be amazed and lift your sit bones. To know what it at the difference in your riding. Always feels like sit on someone’s lap and have try to leave your legs loose and relaxed them sit on yours to feel the sit bones when riding unless you are asking your and how to lift them. Sit bones stabbing horse to do something like turn or go you in the thigh isn’t a good feeling. faster. If walking is all it takes for you to get sore well that tells you how weak Start at whatever speed you can stay your muscles are and they need to be on at and then build to whatever you developed. When the muscles are in can handle as the time goes on and toshape you are able to canter up and wards whatever goal you’ve set. Have down hills, spin, jump, whatever you fun, keep their backs happy, get strong like for 20 minutes and you feel noth- and ride better. ing. Your confidence and ability to stay on vastly improves, therefore you make Cheers your horse happier and yourself safer. Glenn You might hear bareback riding will ruin their backs. I’ve been riding bareback all my life and have horses that were 25 when I rode them and they are still going strong with backs that are strong and healthy. In my experience, I have not ever seen a horse damaged from occasionally riding bareback.

Glenn Stewart has a complete horsemanship program and offering year round educational opportunities at his facility near Fort Saint John, BC. He is available to travel for clinics, demonstrations, events and corporate leadership. He also offers on-line learning and has a complete Horsemanship DVD Educational Series on Some days I’ve had to ride for hours his stages program, a great way to because the horse pulled out and we learn his horsemanship program from Riding bareback without a pad and had to go on foot to find them while home. For more information on Glenn doing it well is a big step, if you are not packing only a halter to catch them. and The Horse Ranch visit www.theriding well it doesn’t give any protec- Then I would jump on bareback and horseranch.com.

Canola price seasonality

BYOB

With independent nutrition consultant BARRY YAREMCIO

“With increasing costs and tighter margins, maintaining a high level of productive efficiency is needed to be profitable. Providing a balanced nutrition program is a big part of the management plan to meet these goals.” Barry Yaremcio

COW FEEDING PROGRAM IMPACTS FETAL DEVELOPMENT DURING LATE PREGNANCY

‘Many factors influence commodity prices,’ says Neil Blue, provincial crops market analyst with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. ‘The main price determining factors for most commodities are supply and demand, and that is true for canola prices.’ Factors affecting the availability of crop or of a competing crop in the largest production areas together with demand for those crops have the greatest influence on a crop’s price. ‘Therefore, from the supply side, prices tend to follow the production cycle of a crop. To help with their pricing decisions, crop marketers should be aware of seasonal price patterns of crops that they produce.’ Seasonal prices are calculated by taking the average price for a certain period, such as a week or month, and comparing it to the average price over a longer period such as a year. Seasonal prices are often plotted on a bar graph, with the annual price average as Index 100. Usually, such a calculation uses data from several years, thus reducing the influence of contra-seasonal price moves that happen in some years.

Muscle development occurs at two different stages of pregnancy. In mid pregnancy, the initial development of the muscle cells builds the base for further muscle development in late pregnancy. The number of muscle cells cannot be changed. Associated with muscle development is the ability of the animal to marble (develop internal fat). Marbling improves meat quality. When nutrients are limited at this time, the total amount of muscle development and marbling is reduced. The cow develops colostrum in the last five to six weeks of pregnancy. Colostrum is the first milk that provides passive immunity to the calf. All nutrients are required to develop a high quality colostrum. Vitamin E can only be passed on to the calf through the colostrum. It is not transferred to the calf prior to calving. A minimum of 9% protein is required in late pregnancy. If grazing late season on over mature pasture, or fed a poorer quality hay, long term calf performance is impacted. Calves born to cows that did not consume adequate protein were 15 to 25 pounds lighter at weaning and had a 35 to 40 pounds lighter carcass weight when slaughtered. Heifer calves were also impacted by cows consuming a low protein ration in late pregnancy. These calves took longer to start cycling and had a 10 to 13% lower pregnancy rate compared to those receiving a higher protein ration. Observation: Inadequate nutrition can be very subtle. Poor nutrition can impact animal performance, health, and reproduction. A lower average weaning weight, a 2 to 5 percent higher open cow rate, or calves having more health problems at birth or later in life. Many times, it is attributed to “well, it was just the year” and not taken as an indication that there may be problems with the feeding program.

Spending time to sample feeds and balance rations can improve animal performance, reduce veterinary and drug costs and have heavier calves to sell. An investment that can pay big dividends.

‘Canola prices tend to make a low during the September/ October period when there is abundant supply,’ explains Blue. ‘Harvest progress, yield reports and buyer demand all affect timing of harvest price lows. After a harvest low, prices usually rebound as harvest selling pressure subsides and as de-

mand again becomes evident.’ Canola prices tend to level off into year-end, often improve during the December holiday period, trade sideways to lower into mid-February and then improve into spring. Prices tend to peak sometime in May-June and, unless production problems continue to support prices, usually erode from mid-July into a harvest low. Often that price decline into harvest is interrupted by a frost concern in August or early September. ‘Seasonal price patterns are one factor to consider when developing a marketing plan and analyzing a market. Fall delivered prices tend to be the highest at the beginning of the growing season when production uncertainty is the greatest. That is often the best time to forward price some expected production, considering cash flow needs and available storage for the expected new crop.’ However, Blue points out that in a year of reduced crop production in a major Northern hemisphere area, prices can rise during the growing season right into harvest. ‘Because of this possibility and that of an unexpected production shortfall on your farm, it is recommended to only forward contract with buyers up to about 50% of expected production. To price a higher percentage of canola prior to harvest, it is prudent to use the futures or options market to avoid additional physical delivery commitment.’ Seasonal prices should be considered as more of a tendency than a certainty. ‘However, of the many factors that can affect crop prices, the seasonal price pattern is deserving of a crop marketer’s respect,’ says Blue.

The program is designed to help cut input costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This program is open to primary producers operating in Alberta. To find more information about theses programs and to access the application forms visit the programs page on Alberta’s Canadian Agricultural Partnership website. The Canadian Agricultural Partnership is a 5-year, $3 billion federal-provincial-territorial investment in the agriculture, agri-food and agri-based products sector that began in April, 2018. In Alberta, it represents a federal-provincial investment of $406 million in strategic programs and initiatives for the agricultural sector. For more information about the Canadian Agricultural Partnership in Alberta visit cap.alberta.ca.

Market Assurance Alberta’s livestock, crop and apiculture industries are continually tasked by new, domestic or export markets to meet new and emerging risks and control challenges. The program will support plant health, apiculture health, livestock health, biosecurity, traceability, surveillance, and livestock welfare gaps related to market assurance. It also supports value chains with access to technical, compliance and market expertise, and technologies needed to implement assurance requirements and processes that provide confidence in the health, biosecurity, traceability, surveillance and welfare related attributes of Alberta’s livestock, crop and bee products. The program will also serve to reduce risks associated with these assurance related market interruptions. This program is open for industry organizations, agri-processors and primary producers. Alberta spring fertilizer prices since then, urea has climbed higher by $85/mt to the April/May price of $583/ mt.’ Comparing year over year spring prices, in the spring of 2020 urea averaged $525/mt, whereas 2021 spring averaged $583/mt, an increase of $58/mt or 11% year over year. ‘Despite the spring of 2021 having the highest urea price in the past five years, the $583/mt high is not far above 2019 spring values of $566/mt, or 2017 spring prices when urea was priced at $540/mt,’ explains Furtas. Phosphate ‘There is a very similar explanation to higher phosphate prices,’ points out Furtas. ‘Expanding international acreage is driving higher global demand. Raw material prices for phosphate increased, supply chains were disrupted and ocean freight costs increased. An added complication to the phosphate story is U.S. countervailing tariffs on top producers Russia and Morocco, which has meant that global production has been operating below capacity for the past several months.’ Alberta phosphate began its price climb in the fall of 2020. In November, the price of Alberta phosphate averaged $682/mt. Fast forward to May 2021, and phosphate

‘Even though prices of fertilizers have increased, thankfully supply shortages were not an issue in Alberta,’ says Furtas. ‘There were many indicators throughout the winter that fertilizer prices were headed higher.’ Furtas adds fertilizer analysts expect farm input prices for crop nutrients to remain high throughout 2021. Global demand for agricultural fertilizers are going through a period of growth in response to high commodity prices and resulting acreage expansion. averaged $883/mt (see figure 2). Comparing the year over year spring prices for Alberta phosphate, spring 2020 phosphate averaged $675/mt, whereas 2021 spring averaged $880/mt, an increase of $205/mt or 30% on a year over year basis. ‘Spring phosphate prices averaging $880/mt is certainly the highest in the past five years. The next closest was spring of 2016 when phosphate averaged around $800/mt, and spring of 2019 when phosphate averaged $765/mt.’

‘Nitrogen and phosphate prices have been rising throughout 2021,’ says Ryan Furtas, market analyst with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. ‘Strong demand, rising raw material prices, supply constraints and inflation have combined to increase retail fertilizer prices over recent months.’ Demand for fertilizer has increased in 2021. High agriculture commodity prices have led to an increase in crop input expenditures, primarily driven by a global acreage expansion. Urea Nitrogen Global demand for nitrogen products in 2021 has removed any excess supply from prior years. Meanwhile, production struggled to keep up with expanding acres amid COVID-related supply chain interruptions. The 2021 market rally for energy commodities saw raw materials such as natural gas and coal steepen the nitrogen production cost curve. In addition, nitrogen producers incurred increased costs throughout their supply chain. ‘For Alberta farmers, the cost of nitrogen products required for the 2021 crop began to increase in the last couple months of 2020 (see figure 1). Alberta urea prices were $498/metric tonne (mt) in November of 2020 and,

The Amateur Gardener: the king of zucchini Off the top of my head, it’s hard to find a lot of good things to say about the heatwave. Hot weather in general is always great, but like we all know, nice weather, and weather when you get can’t fall asleep until 2 a.m. because of the heat are two completely different things. The mornings are nice, but erupting in sweat every time you climb into your vehicle is not. Alas, I won’t continue painting these weird images, but I did find the one very great thing to takeaway from the heatwave: your garden will grow like crazy.

of myself. My expectations were so low after the first two weeks, the mere fact that most of my plants are growing and not dying is enough to have me feel like the king of gardening. Or, at least, the king of zucchini — I’m still debating which is the more appealing title. I planted more seeds and plants mid-June and even they are starting to show pleasing results. It feels like there’s nothing to do. But, anytime it feels like things are going too good, I always find a way to throw a wrench, or should I say potatoe beetle, into my plans. I left town for a week and a half right after the heat wave, ensuring that my gardens, after getting a daily dose of water to survive the 40 degree days, will get much less than the desired amount of moisture for a week’s worth of 25 degree days. Vacation waits for no man though, so I left with optimism, and a small prayer, that things would be OK upon my return.

Ending your day in the sweltering heat with a trip to the garden to water your plants, only to realize how much they’ve grown in 24 hours, puts such a big smile on your face you forget that in two hours time you’ll be cursing the heavens for this (seemingly) generational drought. Yes, all is good in the gardening world, though I think I’ll wait until my fourth installment before I start providing gardening tips for all my fellow garden-heads.

By the way, if anyone reading this finds themselves with nothOne worry I have, however, is ing better to do than to stop by that I’m getting a little too ahead the Fort St. John Community

Gardens and water my two beds, they are the ones in the middle row that look like this: Yes, while most people ask their closest friends weeks before going away if they can look after their garden or what have you, I wait until midway through to ask readers in a column. Either way, it would be greatly appreciated, and I would have more people to blame if in fact things do take a turn for the

worse. I hope you all enjoyed the fruits of the heatwave as much as I did, and are starting to harvest and eat some of your favourite vegetables. Thanks for reading and I’ll see you next time. Email sports reporter Dillon Giancola at sports@ahnfsj.ca

Livestock owners urged to prepare for wildfire season through Premises ID As B.C. faces the risk of an extreme wildfire season in 2021, ranchers and livestock operators are urged to register with the Premises Identification (ID) program.

and Fisheries. “Having a Premises ID helped B.C. ranchers protect their animals during the intense wildfires of 2017 and 2018, and it could help you this year too.”

The program is available at no cost through a user-friendly online registration system. Producers are encouraged to register land where animals are kept, handled, assembled or disposed of.

Ranchers with a Premises ID number are in a better position to respond to emergencies that could impact them. They can be given direct notice of approaching extreme weather events that could threaten their animals and land, “We experienced the hottest tem- and using their Premises ID can make it perature ever recorded in Canada this easier to arrange for access to check on week, the forests are dry and the risk of their animals in areas under an evacuawildfires is very, very real,” said Lana tion order. Popham, Minister of Agriculture, Food

About two-thirds of livestock producers (5,200) and 100% of supply-managed (i.e., dairy cattle and poultry) livestock premises are currently registered in the program.

The program helped about 200 ranchers access their animals in evacuation zones and saved the lives of hundreds of animals during the devastating wildfire season of 2017.

Horizon

2021 will likely be the last year participation in the Premises ID program is voluntary, as a new Premises ID regulation under the B.C. Animal Health Act is anticipated to be in place in 2022.

OPEN ROAD R0011490554

The Elected Officials Challenge I had the privilege of being asked to do a special route with the Mayor of Mayerthorpe, Ms Janet Jabush. When I got to the community Janet had me set up in the Haven Inn. With great Parking and a super clean room I turned up the AC on high and off I went to meet Mayor JJ at local staple Pizza Napoli. This place had the home cooked vibe! From the seating being just like sitting at your kitchen table at home to the comfortable environment and the amazing smells, this place is nothing short of perfection.

from the Deep Creek Market joined us as well. We left Mayerthorpe and rode Hwy 43 west to Whitecourt to have brunch at the RoadHouse Pub and Grill. The food was nothing short of delicious and our waitress was friendly and fast. Fed and watered, we then made our way to Hwy 32 toward Swan Hills, with smooth roads and little traffic, it was a very mellow ride to the Town of Swan Hills. We met up with Councillor Carol Webster who treated us to milkshakes at Sammy’s restaurant, with the day warming up this was a delicious if unexpected treat.

We then Backtracked on Hwy 33 to Hwy 658 toward Blue Ridge, there was a lovely stretch of fresh paved road. We took this Hwy all the way back to Hwy 43 and back into Mayerthorpe, JJ The Geographical Centre took me to and talked with passion about the Memorial of Alberta. A short 3km hike can find of the Fallen 4 RCMP officers that were lost in that comthis point of interest. After a few pictures we munity in March of 2005. So he bought it and learned how to run a restaurant from the original owners and he has not looked back. Mayor JJ joined me for some amazing pizza and we chatted about the route we were going to ride in the morning.

We said our goodbyes to Carol and headed on Hwy 33 to Fort Assiniboine. On the route there we pulled off to a roadside turnout where there was a hidden attraction.

facebook live, JJ had one more stop to end the day, it was the look out of the Rochfort Bridge which is a large trestle bridge that crosses over Hwy 43, truly an amazing view of great ingenuity. We ended the day with Ice cream at the Rochfort Bridge Trading Post, which after the heat from the day was very much warranted. Thanks to Mayor Janet Jabush (JJ), Lynn, Dean, Michelle, Carol for the amazing ride and memories that will not be forgotten! Shiny side up!

Pioneering Alaska Highway historian Marl Brown mourned Fort Nelson is mourning the death of long-time resident and pioneering historian Marl Brown. Brown died June 30, according to a post on social media by the Fort Nelson Public Library and Northern Rockies Region Archives. “Marl Brown came to the north in 1957 to work as a mechanic for one of the Royal Canadian Army maintenance camps, at Mile 245,” they said. “Here, after seeing many artifacts and valuable object being thrown away, he recognized the need for their preservation. This hobby eventually turned into a lifelong passion, and allowed for the formation of the Fort Nelson Historical Society, and the Fort Nelson Heritage Museum. “Our deepest condolences to the Brown family and friends. Marl Brown’s memory will live on through everyone who had the pleasure to have known him, and the many invaluable contributions he provided to this community.” Brown was the curator of the Fort Nelson Heritage Museum. Local artist Dawn Gullackson called Brown a “local legend” and noted he saved and housed many items of the building of the historic Alaska Highway. “I remember real well when he asked me why I wanted to paint 100 paintings in a row and give all of the proceeds to the museum. That conversation at this time will remain mine in my heart and in my mind,” said

Gullackson. Preserving the memories and equipment of those who worked on the highway later became his mission, and a goal that was made paramount when he witnessed so much equipment being scrapped after the military operation died down. “I saw so much stuff being destroyed - it was just thrown away,” Brown told the Alaska Highway News in 2014. “Everything. Our vehicles, our history. I saw so much stuff that should have been saved. I thought, Hey, somebody should do something about this. We better start saving it.” His answer was to create a museum in Fort Nelson to preserve the present and past for future generations. That was in the 1970s, and the Fort Nelson Historical Society was founded on March 31, 1977. It would be more than a decade before he could put together the money and resources to make the museum a reality. “We had to raise a hell of a pile of money to build our own building,” he said. “We built it out of logs.” The museum eventually opened in 1987, and later became the home for a lot of the town’s important historical buildings: an Anglican church, the old post office, a Hudson’s Bay house that was taken from the town’s fort, a trapper’s cabin, and a blacksmith’s shop. More than 250,000 people have walked through the museum’s doors since it opened.

Province launches algae watch website The province has launched a new website to help residents recognize and identify algae blooms in B.C. lakes, and contribute to citizen science data gathering. The province says algae are a natural part of aquatic ecosystems, providing food for fish and supplying much of the oxygen we breathe. But prolific growth can cause a dense mass or bloom to form — Charlie Lake for example is notorious for regularlyoccurring blue-green algae, also called cyanobacteria, which can produce potent toxins harmful to humans, animals, and livestock. The Ministry of Environment says the new Algae Watch website will help the province better understand where and when algae blooms occur, and help scientists determine future water-monitoring programs. Residents are encouraged to use the site to learn the difference between algae blooms, and provide information and photos on the location and extent of algae blooms in their area. “The website can help us track changes over time and identify areas of the province that are getting more algae blooms. We can then start investigating what’s causing these changes,” said Mike Sokal, a water quality limnologist for the province. “It’s really encouraging to see people interested in what’s happening at their lake. The Ministry of Agriculture gave an update to the PRRD on Thursday about the growing mulit-million dollar agricultural technology sector in B.C. In B.C., 160 companies utilize some form of agri-tech, generating $500 million in revenue in 2019 and creating 2,200 jobs.

understanding of the unique challenges faced by the agriculture industry in northeast B.C. “From what I heard when I joined the ministry that there were some issues from number of a local governments around province about not enough consultation,” said Bronstein.

Agri-Tech Land Use Secretariat Ron Bronstein says there’s no universally agreed upon definition for agri-tech, and set out to get a better understanding when he started his role last June. “There’s some companies in B.C. that have done some work over the last 10 years now, they’re developing some technologies and some new innovations, and they’re working closely with both the farming, ranching, aquaculture areas,” said Bronstein. “What agri-tech is all about is improving efficiency or output and production.”

Area E Director Dan Rose says that hasn’t changed.

Organic and regenerative farming are two industries utilizing agri-tech, said Bronstein.

Area D Director Leonard Hiebert pointed out that regenerative farming is already well established in the north and asked Bronstein to convince the ministry to spend some time in the region.

“Organic farming for the most part, was about not using any kind of artificial pesticide, biocides, etc., on the farm property,” said Bronstein. “It was around producing products that were guaranteed and didn’t have those chemicals or residues.” Bronstein’s presentation also briefly mentioned the B.C. food task force report, which was savagely critiqued by PRRD directors last year for its lack of

“Recognize that the northeast is by the largest agro-business, not agro-hobby area of the province. There’s millions of millions of dollars that flow through our economy, and through B.C.’s economy, every year, generating inputs,” said Rose. “For you to sit there on the phone and muse about whether we have a college up here or not shows the ignorance of the Ministry of Agriculture and their total lack of interest in our area.”

“Have them actually come past Hope up to take a look at the struggles we have here. It’s really hard to put it to them in just saying it. They actually have to come and see what what we’re dealing with,” said Hiebert. “And maybe the strategies will change a little bit.”

munity participate in the recycling programs offered through various stewardship programs. This is a special new program for farmers and for the agricultural community that addresses ag plastics and we are pleased to partner with Cleanfarms to make it happen,” said PRRD Board Chair Brad Sterling. “We look forward to seeing excellent results from PRRD farmers that will lead to a better understand of how to achieve zero plastic waste in the agricultural sector in years to come.”

“We estimate farmers in the PRRD generate about 70 tonnes of used agricultural baler twine and grain bags annually,” said Barry Friesen, executive director of Cleanfarms, in a release.

Both ag twine and grain bags be dropped off at the designated collection sites free of charge. To recycle the ag twine, farmers must place it loose and free of debris in large collection bags that are available at the collection sites.
